CHUNKFEST COMES TO POOLE THIS SUMMER

There is only a few months to go until Europe’s first hybrid sports and music festival where disabled and able-bodied athletes will compete against each other in strength events. The event is Chunkfest and will be hosted by Ringwood based strength and fitness brand, House of Chunk.

THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like looking after big cats? How about dreaming of getting closer to our lemurs? Perhaps you’ve always fancied trying your hand at wildlife photography?

The good news is, if this is you or somebody you know, we have an experience guaranteed to make dreams come true in our new gift experience range!

Whether there’s a big birthday coming up, you’re looking for a date with a twist or you’re hoping to fulfil a lifelong ambition, there’s something for everyone.

Experiences include feeding our giraffe, or penguins, getting closer to our Amur tiger or snow leopard, going behind the scenes with our birds, primates or tropical house teams and a savannah experience with our serval and mongoose or meerkats.

Each of the experiences has been tailor made to offer incredibly exciting opportunities to get closer to our animals, learn all about them from our keepers and make the kind of memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Due to the nature of these experiences there are age restrictions in place and these are stated, along with the description of what you can expect.

All of our animal experiences also include a full day at the zoo and 10% discount in the gift shop so you can pick up the perfect memento of your day.

Information on each animal experience and how to book can be found at www.marwell. org.uk/support-us/animal-experiences

Chunkfest will take place on Saturday 24th June at Poole Stadium where competitors will compete against each other in strength events with four specifically designed Strongman events alongside smaller challenges and competitions.

The day will also feature MMA and boxing displays and demonstrations of wheelchair rugby and boxing. There will be live DJs throughout the day, a variety of food stalls, and exhibitors from across the country showcasing fitness kit, as well as health and rehabilitation products. The day will also feature special guests from the Strongman World and paralympic athletes.

Find out more and get your tickets at houseofchunk.co.uk/chunkfest.

BARKER LAUNDRY & DRY CLEANING HAS ANNOUNCED ITS SUPPORT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN 2023

Barker Laundry & Dry Cleaning has announced its support for young people in 2023, to mark His Majesty King Charles III Coronation year, and has nominated 3 locally based youth charities with which to partner.

Dorset based Barker are a Royal warrant Holding company and specialists in the care and development of fine fabric products, the largest domestic laundry in the UK and a specialist dry cleaner. They also manufacture and supply gentlemen’s dress wear to retailers around the world.

MD Matthew Barker said, “The three charities that we will be supporting for the remainder of the Coronation year are: Elevate Foundation, Boo Charity and Life Education Wessex & Thames Valley. The Barker staff team will all be getting involved in different fundraising activities throughout 2023. We will also be looking to engage our fabulous clients too.

“There will be a variety of initiatives taking place, including an online auction with the opportunity to bid for an array of products and prizes. We will also be hosting cakes sales, placing collection boxes in all our stores and much more. We are really looking forward to celebrating this momentous Coronation year. All proceeds raised will be shared equally between the nominated charities.”

DORSET GETS MUDDY TO RAISE VITAL FUNDS FOR LOCAL CHARITY HOSPICE

Over 200 people and their pooches joined in Lewis-Manning’s Muddy Dog Dash at Upton Country Park on Sunday 26th March and raised over a whopping £12,000.

Participants took on a 2km or 4km obstacle circuit, which consisted of hurdles for hounds, woofderful weave poles, pawesome ball pits, pooches (water) pools, jumps and humps and a perfectly placed Dog Bar by Nurturing By Nature halfway around the course, for dogs and their owners to take a quick break and well deserved water!

Runners and their furry friends enjoyed a warm-up hosted by the fantastic Sparky from Hot Radio and the station gave out spot prizes donated by Running Free, including Best Dressed and Muddiest Contestant.

LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE CARE

www.lewis-manning.org.uk

Ruth Wright, Area Fundraiser at LewisManning Hospice Care said, “We are absolutely ecstatic that so many people from our community came out on the Sunday to have buckets of fun and laughter, whilst raising vital funds for our hospice.”

“On behalf of all the staff, volunteers and patients I want to say a huge heartfelt well done and thank you to everyone who took part and supported this event. £12,000 is a huge amount to raise and will help so many of our patients, their loved ones and carers receive the care they need and deserve.”

“There have been so many supporters of this event from our incredible sponsors Barratt Homes, as well as Care South, Nurturing By Nature, Hot Radio and The Old Boys Club. Without their help and support the event wouldn’t have been as brilliant as it was.”

MAYFLOWER THEATRE AWARDS £9,000 IN BURSARY MONIES TO ASPIRING PERFORMERS

Three aspiring performers from Hampshire were chosen to receive £9,000 in bursary money to venture into education to fulfil their career aspirations.

Olivia Davies, Petra Joan-Athene and Thomas Kingman were each given £3,000 by Mayflower Theatre, Southampton as part of its Higher Education Bursary Scheme –an initiative to inspire those with an interest in the arts to undertake accredited training courses to build a career in the industry.

The scheme provides up to £50,000 per year to individuals with an interest in acting, dance, music, writing and other arts-related professions. With a maximum amount of £3,000 per awardee, there are also additional ‘special’ awards of up to £9,000 for those who have exceptional potential or unique talent and ideas.

Michael Ockwell, Chief Executive of Mayflower Theatre, said: “It is a privilege to be able to offer initiatives such as our Higher Education Bursary Scheme to aspiring performers and arts lovers in Hampshire. Many previous awardees of our bursary scheme are now enjoying fruitful careers in the performing arts including stage management, actors and musicians. Some of which we are fortunate to see back in our own theatre as they tour the country and come back to Southampton with some of the UK’s most prestigious productions.”

Mayflower Theatre is an independent charity and does not receive any direct external funding. The money it earns from presenting and producing world-class stage productions enables it to provide a variety of schemes intended to engage and inspire young people and the local Southampton and Hampshire communities.

LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE CARE APPEALS FOR EVENT VOLUNTEERS!

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care is making an appeal for ad hoc Fundraising event volunteers to support the hospice in its busy schedule of events planned throughout 2023.

Volunteers Manager, Nicola Garsden said, “Following the King’s Coronation and The Big Help Out volunteer initiative which is encouraging businesses, organisations, and individuals across the country to help out and volunteer in their local communities, we are looking to reach out to anyone who is considering volunteering to come and join our enthusiastic team of fundraisers. We’d love to encourage volunteers to get involved in their local community hospice.

“We have a diverse calendar of community events and campaigns taking place over the coming year and are really keen to grow our team of volunteer helpers for different events.

“Events include our Nightingale Ball, Sand Polo, the Wimborne Folk Festival, Swanage Classic Car Show, Fire Walk, Community Candles Remembrance Events, Christmas Tree Recycling Service, Wreath Making Workshops and the return of the Muddy Dog Dash in 2024.

LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE CARE

www.lewis-manning.org.uk

“It’s brilliant how the hospice is being embraced with so many community events choosing to support us and allowing us to have a presence. Having event volunteers onboard will certainly allow us to ensure that the Lewis-Manning name is getting out there and will make a real difference to us and increase awareness of the services that we offer to patients and their families with life limiting illnesses.

“On Thursday 11th May Lewis-Manning will be hosting a Kings Coronation Tea Party & Open Day. It’s open to all but would be a great opportunity for potential volunteers to come along, meet the team and learn more about what we’re all about. It takes place from 2 – 4pm.”

Nicola concluded, “In line with The Big Help Out message, we urge would be volunteers to ‘do something amazing, join in, lend a hand and make a change!’”

Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering opportunities with LewisManning Hospice Care is urged to email Nicola.garsden@lewis-manning.org.uk

CINDERELLA SISTERS SCOOP PRIZED PANTO AWARD... OH YES THEY DID!

There were twice the tears and double the joy as Lighthouse came away from the star studded 2022/23 Pantomime Awards, hosted by showbiz legend Christopher Biggins at the Trafalgar Theatre in London’s West End, on Tuesday with a top award.

Andrew Pollard and Alim Jadavji won Best Sisters for their hilariously memorable Nadine and Doris in Cinderella, produced by Lighthouse and written and directed by CBeebies star Chris Jarvis. The show was also nominated as Best Panto, losing out to theatre giant Sir Ian McKellen in Mother Goose; while Lauren Azania’s astonishing performance as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother deservedly earned her a nomination for the Carmen Silvera Award for Best Magical Being.

“What a night - the awards were every bit as fab as we hoped and our Ugly Sisters were crowned the best all the land,” said delighted Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain.

“We’re so proud, not only of Andrew and Alim who were absolutely brilliant, but also of Lauren whose Fairy was out of this world. And if our Cinderella is going to miss out on Best Panto, we’re only too happy to lose to Sir Ian McKellen.”

The UK Pantomime Association’s 64 judges attended more than 240 venues to see over 700 performances, far and wide across the United Kingdom.

Cinderella was nominated as Best Panto (500-900 seats), but the title went to Mother Goose at the Duke of York’s Theatre, starring Sir Ian McKellen who was also honoured with a special award in recognition of his ‘passionate advocacy and services to the artform of pantomime’.

Tickets are on sale now for Aladdin, which runs from Thursday 7 to Sunday 31 December at www.lighthousepoole.co.uk.

Why let your property with Rumsey of Sandbanks?

Rumsey’s name has been synonymous with luxury properties in Sandbanks for over 70 years. With its roots in estate agency, the company started offering self-catering holidays on the peninsula in the 1970’s, and since then their guests regularly return year after year, often with their children and grandchildren. This unprecedented guest loyalty is born out of the winning combination of very high standards of accommodation in the best locations in Sandbanks, paired with outstanding customer service and attention to detail.

This same level of service is extended to Rumsey’s property owners and this year that service has been boosted by Rumsey becoming part of the Toad Hall Cottages group of companies. The transition has been an easy one, as independently owned Toad Hall Cottages share Rumsey’s ethos that every owner should receive a hands on, flexible and bespoke service specific to their property.

With self catering holidays in the UK gaining increasing popularity, as a property owner your options are wide. From the day-to-day essentials to the little touches that set them aside from the competition, such as their exclusive concierge service

and flexibility on owner bookings, they are constantly fine tuning what they do to make sure they offer both owners and guests everything they would expect from a local agency, combined with the vision and energy of a 21st century business.

Introducing a heartfelt new local passion project; Harry Houses

Simon Tolson reflects on letting Rumsey Holiday Homes go, his next project and why he will never retire

You’ve made yourself the face of Rumsey for a long time so many people were surprised to hear you had sold the business. What led to that decision? It was a very long and gradual process –when I bought Rumsey in 2017 the business was on its knees so the first few years were a blur of non stop activity changing just about everything.

Just as we were making good progress Covid came along and we were shut down which was terrifying. Ultimately the pandemic gave a huge boost to the

UK holiday sector and many more people wanted to buy second homes in Sandbanks so we ended up growing very rapidly.

As things returned to normal in 2022 it became apparent that we had outgrown our systems and the business needed to become more disciplined and efficient –this is not my area of expertise!

After a very expensive and painful experience with a new booking and CRM system that ultimately failed it became clear to me that the best way

forward was to become part of a larger organisation bringing economies of scale and expertise whilst retaining the local independent service.

Time to put your feet up and enjoy retirement?

To be honest I cannot imagine anything worse! I might be 60 this year but I’m convinced that my best work is ahead of me – all those years of making mistakes, getting knocked down and getting up again

mean I have bags of experience to put to good use. I did contemplate the path that many people take after an exit – working for a charity, helping young people in business etc but ultimately I know I’d just end up working flat out so I may as well apply that energy to a new business.

So what’s next if you’re not going to tend to your roses and go on a cruise?

I’ve had an idea developing in my mind for years for a new concept in hospitality. Think of a ski lodge without the skiing or a yoga retreat without the yoga. A small guest house accommodating a dozen people or so, rooms rented individually but everyone eats family style dinner together.

The target market is not holidaymakers but people who just need a bit of looking after and support – think of patients discharged from hospital but not quite ready to manage on their own, families visiting the hospice

for the last few weeks of their mum’s life, parent’s with a child in the hospital or someone here for the week to clear out the house after a bereavement.

Over the years we have looked after guests like this at Rumsey but a self catering holiday home, however nice, is not quite the same experience

What is appealing to me is that I really don’t know where the market is. We will evolve to meet demand and build the business accordingly. Creating something from scratch really gets me up in the morning and growing sales is my skill set – managing a steady business and reducing costs is definitely not.

Back to working flat out then?

Not quite, I must confess. For the first time in my life I won’t be doing everything myself and employing staff only when I’m overwhelmed. Harry’s House will have

management and staff in place from day one so I will be concentrating on the marketing although anyone who knows me will be rolling their eyes at the moment in the certain knowledge that I won’t be able to resist interfering from time to time!

So where does the name come from?

Harry is my dad and the idea first came to me 15 years ago when he suffered a serious heart attack. He was transferred to London for a life or death operation and I had to find somewhere for my mum to stay for a fortnight. Now he lives in a nursing home but there have been many times over the years when it would have been great for him to stay somewhere for a week and give my mum a break or the chance to go on a holiday.

HARRY’S HOUSE WILL OPEN MID MAY.

Enjoy your own Race Across The World

Inspired by the new BBC One series? Book one of these holidays to the wild, adventurous & culturally fascinating host country, says Sarah Marshall.

Planes, trains and automobiles have made travel easier, but imagine going back to basics and having to plot a journey over long distances day by day. That’s the premise of Race Across The World, which sees competitors aim to reach a destination with a meagre budget and a lot of help from kind locals.

A new series on BBC One challenges teams to cross Canada from coast to coast – an epic undertaking that will highlight not only skills of ingenuity but also the beautiful backdrop of a country so vast and varied it spans six time zones. If you’re inspired to visit, here a few of the holidays to choose.

A blow-out to see bears

Bears of all shapes, sizes and species roam Canada – from polar bears on ice floes in the frozen north, to grizzlies catching salmon in temperate rainforests. See three of the most famous on this new tour from Luxtripper. Starting in the Arctic, spot polar bears on the shores of Hudson Bay in Manitoba, while also keeping an eye out for beluga whales. Continue to the Great Bear Rainforest and Tweedsmuir Park Lodge, which is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of grizzly bears during autumn.

Finish with a stay at the Spirit Bear Lodge, searching for the rare Kermode, or spirit bear, on foot and by boat. Orcas, humpbacks, sea lions and bald eagles are also possibilities.

HOW: Luxtripper (020 4538 2013) offers a 12-night trip from £34,995 per person, including flights.

Canoes, natural pools and fine food

Fries mixed with cheese curds doesn’t sound like the most appetising dish, but poutine is a guilty pleasure across the French-speaking province of Quebec. Try it at several stands and cafes along the charming, cobbled streets of Quebec City before venturing further into the wilds. Adventure activities are high on the agenda; canoe on Lake Sacacomie and bathe sore muscles in its natural pools. Between May and October, observe whales from Tadoussac, the first French settlement in North America, founded in 1600. Black bears and wolves can be found in the Saguenay Fjord region on a kayaking cruise.

HOW: Trailfinders (020 7084 6500) offers a 14-night trip from £2,278pp (two sharing), including car hire. Excludes flights. ABOVE

Venturing off-track up north

This year, the northern Yukon territory celebrates the 125th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush. Based on a novel written in 1903 and set in this late 19th century period of prosperity, Call Of The Wild, starring Harrison Ford, was shot in the region.

Visit locations featured in the film, such as Dawson and Whitehorse, and try your luck panning for gold. A ‘flightseeing’ trip over the Kluane National Park’s glaciers, the world’s largest nonpolar icefields, gives an insight into an area of the world few people get to see.

HOW: Original Travel (020 3582 4990) offers a 12day Call Of The Wild Yukon trip from £3,100pp, including flights.

A maritime adventure

Only a short seven-hour flight from the UK, the Canadian Atlantic coast is within easy reach. Whale-watching, wine-drinking and hiking are all on offer in the offbeat, quirky Maritime Provinces, which can be explored on a two-week tour.

In Nova Scotia, drive the Cabot Trail, flanked by highlands scenery. New Brunswick’s rivers, pine forests and mountains provide many sanctuaries for wildlife, including the Bay of Fundy, known for its extreme tides and whale-watching opportunities. At the Reversing Falls, its possible to watch rapids flowing backwards at high tide.

Although better suited to bracing strolls than sunbathing, Prince Edward Island’s beautiful red sand beaches are the ideal setting for a seafood supper of lobster and mussels.

HOW: Bon-voyage (0800 316 0194) offers a 14-day Atlantic Canada fly-drive of the Maritime Provinces from £2,595pp, including car hire and flights from London, Manchester or Glasgow.

The Rockies and great lakes

One of the world’s most spectacular train journeys, the Rocky Mountaineer passes through turquoise lakes, steep mountain walls and tumbling waterfalls.

Combine the trip with a few days in Banff and Jasper –the two gateway towns to the Rockies – and drive along the Icefields Parkway, a highway lined with glaciers. Take a boat trip to Spirit Island on the Maligne Lake and ride the Jasper Skytram before boarding the luxury train for two days, overnighting in a hotel.

After reaching Vancouver, take a ferry to Vancouver Island to visit Butchart Gardens in Victoria and join a whale watching tour.

HOW: Newmarket Holidays (0330 160 7700) offers an 11-day Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer escorted tour from £3,699 per person, including flights. Departures in September and October.

Now is the time to buy your Spanish property

With the summer well on its way, Vistacasas has been busier than ever, helping many British nationals find their piece of the Spanish lifestyle, away from the stress of the UK. Brexit has not had a negative impact on the British appetite for Spanish property and Brits remain at the top of the list of foreign nationals purchasing Spanish property. With our currency partners at A Place in the Sun Currency, we can help you make your money go further when purchasing a property with us.

We understand that purchasing a property in a foreign country can feel like a minefield, with many questions, doubts, and horror stories. When you purchase a property with Vistacasas, you can rest assured that you are dealing with a well-established agency of professionals who have many years’ experience in the Spanish real estate sector. We will guide you every step of the way, including introducing you to a highly reputable Spanish lawyer, Sheila García Parra. Sheila is a fully registered lawyer and has helped 1000’s of clients with their property purchases, ensuring all the paperwork is in order, including changing over the utilities, obtaining your NIE numbers, and opening a Spanish bank account. Sheila will make sure your purchase is 100% stress free.

In this month’s edition, we have a special Q&A section with Sheila García, answering the most common questions asked by those seeking to buy in Spain.

* SPECIAL OFFER when purchasing with Vistacasas by mentioning House & Lifestyle magazine – we will pay your legal & conveyancing fees.

Can you tell us a little more about yourself, and your law firm?

I became a lawyer when I was 23 years-old, and I have been practising since then. As I love the English language, I decided I wanted to work with English speaking people, and I moved from my hometown to Orihuela Costa 17 years ago. I absolutely love my job. For me it’s not a job, it’s a way of meeting new people and getting to know them. For me people are not just a client number. Everyone is di erent and needs di erent things, and that’s what we try to do, to find the right solution for each one of them. It has always been more important for us the quality rather than the quantity.

How di icult is it to purchase a property in Spain?

I think the process is very easy, especially if you find the right people to guide you through the process. You only need to find the right property and let lawyers guide you through the process.

What are the additional costs involved when buying in Spain?

Depending on the area, you can pay between 8% stamp duty tax, to 10% stamp duty tax. On top of this amount, you need to take into account the notary fees, land registry fees, bank fees and lawyer fees. I think it would be wise to say that you need to calculate around 14% on top for properties under 100k, and around 13% for properties over this figure.

What can I do to prepare fully before coming to Spain to buy a property?

Basically, all the process can be dealt with from Spain, should you wish to give power of attorney to your lawyer. I think the main thing is to buy the right property through a good agent or at least to have the contact and the appointments booked before coming, and then, get advice from a lawyer. Lawyers in Spain must have a civil liability insurance, which means, if anything goes wrong, you will be covered. It is very easy for a real lawyer to prove it, as we all have a lawyer’s number that nobody else can have, apart from the lawyer’s card and the insurance mentioned above.

How to plan an eco-friendly wedding

There are ways to ensure less wastage on your big day, finds Lauren Taylor.

If you’re getting married in the next couple of years, you probably have a million decisions to make. Band or DJ? Veil or no veil? How many people should you invite?

Sustainability doesn’t often rank high on the priority list, but there are lots of ways brides and grooms can have a fantastic big day, while having a small impact on the planet.

“Being sustainably minded is not only good for the planet, but it can often save money and reduce decision fatigue or overwhelm,” says CEO and founder of socially-conscious caterer Social Pantry, Alex Head, who made her own wedding in October 2022 as ecofriendly as possible.

“It provides you with a workable and meaningful framework for narrowing down your choices,” she explains. “It helps you think about what really matters and what will add value.”

Here are some ways to make your event more sustainable…

Repurpose your wedding dress

While buying a beautiful second-hand dress is definitely an option (try bridalreloved.co.uk), no one will blame you for wanting something new. One option, though, is buying a style that you’d wear again – in a different colour.

“My mini-length couture wedding dress was designed by British bridal designer, Kate Edmondson, who incorporated exuberant puffed sleeves and an oversized bow to match my playful and elegant style,” says Head. “Now the wedding is over, I’ll be dying the dress for an extravagant party outfit.

LIFESTYLE | SUSTAINABLE WEDDING
MAY 23 48

“Alternatively, The Natural Wedding Company stock eco-friendly bridalwear made from ethically sourced and sustainable fabrics by Medusa London, Luna Bride and Sister Organics.

Hire bridesmaids dresses

Head rented bridesmaid dresses through Hire Street, in a bid to reduce the number of new items entering circulation, but also found “beautiful, fashionable outfits at an affordable price”.

She says: “My bridesmaids were surprised at the range of dresses available to hire, in terms of brands, sizes and availability.

“It was a friction-free experience from choosing, trying, receiving, wearing and returning the dresses, and the overwhelming response was that everyone would do it again. They’ll consider hiring for not only weddings, but any occasion where they need a fresh outfit but want to avoid a new purchase.”

Opt for paper or dried flowers

Flowers are a key part of any wedding day, however, they often have a short shelf life, notes Head. “For my wedding, we worked with floral designers, Pom Pom Factory, who specialise in paper and dried flowers.

SUSTAINABLE WEDDING | LIFESTYLE

HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 49

Everything from my eye-popping bouquet and my husband George’s buttonhole to table-setting flowers were paper or dried flowers.

“My guests couldn’t quite believe they were paper, and the best part is that I can keep mine and my daughter Roxy’s mini bouquet forever. The rest of the paper flowers were repurposed for decoration in the Social Pantry cafes. It’s so nice to see the wedding live on this way.”

Serve a low-waste menu

Look for a low-waste or sustainable caterer. Find out what their plan would be for leftovers, and if they can repurpose any ingredients not used on the day.

Head says: “For dessert, we had salted honey tart with mascarpone ice cream, roasted plum and caramelised lemon rind, which meant that even the lemon rinds were put to good use, whilst the fruits could be juiced for cocktails. On that note, our cocktails were even made from brands who support our ethos – such as Discarded Spirits – for our zero-waste Negroni.”

To be even more sustainable – don’t serve beef, or go one step further and opt for an entirely vegetarian menu, making sure to choose as-local-aspossible ingredients.

Consider the impact of invitations

One way is to forgo traditional paper invites altogether and go digital with a wedding website, such as Bliss & Bone or Joy – where guests can find all the details and your registry, if you’re having one (though asking for monetary donations to you or a charity does avoid the purchase of more new things).

If you do want to send physical invites, there are environmentally-friendly ways to do so.

“Zero-waste doesn’t have to mean going without those material touches that mark an event as a special occasion – such as invites, name cards and thank-you cards,” says Head. “Consider opting for a low-impact eco-stationery service, or using environmentally-friendly materials, such as plantable wildflower seed paper.

“This not only sets the tone for a sustainable event and, depending on the time of sending, can give your guests something to grow in the lead-up to your big day, ensuring the upcoming event is at the front of their mind.”

Make the wedding favours something reusable

“At our wedding, we opted for an extra personal touch by working with Initially London to personalise napkins with the names of our guests,” says Head. “This not only guided guests to their seat at the table, but also provided a meaningful wedding favour to take home.”

Other eco ideas include: seeds to plant at home, homemade preserves in reusable jars, or sponsor trees in the names of your guests.

The Property

Pilgrim is quite simply one of Lymington’s finest houses. Combining convenience, privacy, security, parking and a beautiful south facing walled garden with swimming pool. This rare gem is expansive, inviting and comfortable while also offering beautifully proportioned accommodation that has been carefully restored by the current owners. Behind the elegant yet understated Georgian double frontage lies a blend between traditional and contemporary design throughout. The recent renovation remains true to the property’s early 1700s roots while completely overhauling the house’s infrastructure to modern standards, with careful thought given to insulation, wiring, plumbing and lighting as well as underfloor heating throughout the majority of the ground floor.

The principal reception rooms are designed around the south facing walled garden which offers far more space than one might imagine and extends to approximately half an acre.

On the ground floor, the accommodation begins with a charming, cosy reception hall with painted beams, oak floors and a fireplace fitted with a modern wood burning stove. Leading from this hall is the drawing room with a delightful south facing bay window with garden views and a door opening onto the terrace and garden beyond.

The drawing room also has a wide chimney breast with a wood burning stove and carved pale stone surround. Also on the ground floor is a study /snug, again with a wood burning stove, full height wood panelling and ornate period style radiators.

Moving through to the rear of the house is a charming family room, again with an open fire place and wood burning stove. From here there is an electrically powered trapdoor which provides access to steps leading down to a characterful barrel vaulted cellar ideal for wine tasting parties.

Beyond the family is the exceptional kitchen / dining room. The east wall of this superb room is glazed floor to ceiling providing an abundance of light and views across the York stone terrace to the garden beyond. In summer, four sets of Crittall double glazed doors can be opened to join this room with the beautiful courtyard bringing the outside in. The contemporary, wooden handpainted kitchen integrates a wide selection of top of the range appliances including several dishwashers, refrigeration and a variety of ovens. There is a large island which incorporates drawers and further storage as well as providing an impromptu and informal space for dining. Towards the far end of the room is a superb space for a large dining table for more formal meals. Also off the kitchen is a separate utility room with sink, work surfaces, cupboards and space for appliances.

Stairs lead from the hall to the first floor where a central landing provides access to all bedrooms and the second floor. The master bedroom and en suite bathroom occupies the entire rear portion of the house and is beautifully decorated with built in wardrobes and views over the garden, there is also under floor heating and air conditioning in the master bedroom. The bathroom is expansive with a large walk in shower and free standing bath by Catchpole & Rye complete with Waterworks fittings. There are two further double bedrooms and two bathrooms (one en suite) on this floor.

From the landing, stairs lead to the second floor where there is a landing with a door into the fourth double bedroom which has a separate dressing room with a free standing copper bath as well as a separate en suite shower room.

Accommodation includes a long tandem garage and wine cellar extending in total to over 4,800 sq ft.

Grounds & Gardens

The gardens lie to the rear of the house and face due south allowing for light all day with the easterly aspect of the glazed wall in the kitchen allowing morning light to flood in.

Immediately behind the house and enclosed by the kitchen wing is a York stone terrace which is flanked by mature pleached trees and forms the ideal space for outdoor dining, entertaining and relaxing. To the south of the terrace lie beautifully landscaped walled gardens with manicured paths leading through established flower beds and wisteria walks all carefully managed by an automated irrigation system.

Beyond the wisteria walk the garden opens up with a characterful wrought iron gate in an old brick

wall leading to a spectacular wide, level lawn and cleverly screened swimming area with heated pool and pool house. There is room for a Nordic hot tub as well as a delightful traditional lean-to green house which has hosted many summer parties.

Adjoining the house and accessible from both front and back is a long tandem garage which will comfortably fit an estate car plus one other.

In addition to the immediately adjacent garage, there is a larger secure parking area just around the corner close to M&S where there is significant parking for boats and cars as well as a large double garage with electrically operated up and over door.

There is a beautiful landscaped garden extending to half an acre with a heated swimming pool and pool room as well as further outbuildings. Also included in the sale is a large secure parking area which is a short walk from Pilgrim house for multiple cars with a double garage measuring 6.90m x 5.45m and parking area 24.00m x 13.75m.

The Situation

The house sits in one of the town’s most convenient locations on the south side of Lymington’s thriving High Street and within minutes of the marinas and sailing clubs of our charming market town. The town has a weekly Saturday market and also offers diverse shopping facilities, a charming harbour with a historic quay and is surrounded by the outstanding natural beauty of the New Forest National Park. The Forest lies predominantly to the north and offers endless walks and trails on which to walk, run, ride or cycle. To the south lies the coast with further walks towards Milford on Sea along the Sea Wall and unrivalled sailing facilities.

To the north is the New Forest village of Lyndhurst and Junction 1 of the M27 which links to the M3 for access to London. There is a branch line train link to Brockenhurst Railway Station (approximately 5.5 miles) which provides a half hourly service to London Waterloo with a journey time of approximately 90 minutes.

Delicious and easy to rustle up, these refreshing concoctions are where it’s at, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

If you’re in the mood for a little cocktail theatre, thirsty for some inspiration, or want to switch out old favourites for new spirits, these rums, gins and tequilas hit the sweet spot…

MERMAID SPICED RUM & GINGER

To fully appreciate the bold flavour of Mermaid Spiced Rum (£39.90, 70cl, The Isle of Wight Distillery), it’s best enjoyed as a slow sipper before sharpening your mixology skills.

Here, the sunny Caribbean collides beautifully with fruits and spices foraged from the sandy shores of the Isle of Wight. Instantly enticing, apricot, honey, black salt and vanilla notes make themselves known with a long, lingering, honeyed finish.

Spring cocktails to stir the senses

DUPPY WHITE RUM PINK TING

This versatile and vibrant white rum is a fasttrack to a beach hut, swaying palm trees and reggae music filtering through the air.

A Jamaican jewel, on the nose, The Duppy Share Duppy White Rum (£21, 70cl, The Duppy Share) exhibits bold banana aromas with mango, tropical fruits alongside a smooth caramel sweetness with punchy pimento spice on finish.

Ready, steady, stir…

An A-list agave, if you really want to call the shots, Patrón Reposado Tequila (£44.09, 70cl, Amazon), brings everything to the cocktail arena. Straight up it offers true drinking pleasure with a wonderful balance of fresh agave and oak wood, with citrusy florals, honey and touch of pepper on the lingering finish.

Here’s a classic cooler to put you in a sunny mood with thoughts of heading down Mexico way…

KRAKEN CHERRY TIKI

The Kracken’s latest release, Kraken Black Spiced Rum Black Cherry & Vanilla (£23.50, 70cl, Tesco), is a little cracker – and if you’re partial to a black forest cherry dessert, this is the rum for you. Utterly delicious, think dark spiced rum infused with rich cherries and Madagascan vanilla with a lipsmacking finish.

Rich and flavoursome, it’s the ideal partner for tiki cocktails…

INGREDIENTS

40ml Kraken Cherry Rum, 20ml Cointreau, 30ml pineapple juice, 40ml mango & passion fruit coulis, 15ml lime juice, 10ml grenadine. Garnish: Pineapple leaves and half a passion fruit.

HENDRICK’S WILD GARDEN CUP

A label to love and stylistically beautiful, if you’re not captivated by the butterfly eyes on Hendrick’s Flora Adora Gin (currently £26, was £31, 70cl, Amazon), the bouquet will win you over, big-time. Florals abound with subtle herbal notes, hints of violets and garden flowers, finishing smooth as a silk stocking.

Here’s how to stir things up with a fragrant gin that’s as good as it gets in long drinks and cocktails…

INGREDIENTS

50ml Flora Adora, 25ml lemon juice, 25ml simple syrup, soda water. Garnish: 4 raspberries, 6 mint leaves, 3 cucumber wheels.

METHOD

Fill a glass with ice. Add the gin, juice and syrup, top with soda, stir slowly and garnish with raspberries, mint and cucumber.

Hamilton to play a 6 week season at Mayflower Theatre

Producers Jeffrey Seller and Cameron Mackintosh are delighted to announce that the multi award-winning HAMILTON will play a 6 week season at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from 18 March – 26 April 2025. Tickets on general sale from 5 October 2023.

The Olivier, Tony, Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical opened at the newly re-built and restored Victoria Palace Theatre in London in December 2017 where it continues to play to sell-out houses and is currently booking until 2 March 2024. The production continues to play to record breaking houses on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, throughout North America, in Toronto, Australia and Germany with forthcoming seasons in New Zealand and international tour also planned.

A brand-new company for the UK and Ireland tour is currently being assembled from over 3000 hopeful artists. The cast for the UK and Ireland tour will be announced soon.

HAMILTON is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre — a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education.

Public nature reserve opening in Dorset

A new public nature reserve is opening in Dorset on 07 May to provide an ecological space for dog walkers, bird watchers, anglers, horse riders, cyclists and ramblers, along with multiple natural habitats for local wildlife.

Opening for the first time on the Coronation Weekend, the local community is invited along on Sunday 7 May for the formal opening at 11.30am; and to take part in charity Coronation Coracle races on the lakes between 1pm and 4pm. The small, circular, one-person Coracle row-boats can be traced back thousands of years and were traditionally used for fishing in fast flowing rivers.

Knighton Reserve, which borders Warmwell and Crossways, forms part of the Silverlake estate, a private ecological luxury holiday home estate built around an expanse of lakes, woodlands and heathlands. The 15.5 Hectare Suitable Alternative Natural Green Space (SANG) will open to the public for the first time since the site was a former sand quarry and WW2 air base.

The SANG has been carefully designed to meet the needs of a wide range of wildlife species, including dormice, smooth snake, Great crested newts and the Silver-studded blue butterfly. It is made up of acid grassland, broadleaved woodland, wet woodlands, scrubs, waterbodies, lakeside beeches and reed beds. Integrated into the natural habitats will be walking routes, dog friendly zones, bridal paths and birdwatching lookouts.

DOG WALKERS AND RAMBLERS

Four designated dog-friendly circular walking routes, ranging from one kilometre to four kilometres provide pathways through the reserve that take in the cross section of habitats.

Included in the network is Pooch’s Place route, a one kilometre walk that is set aside as the only area where dogs are allowed off-lead. This area includes a dog splash pond and dog swimming area in an enclosed area of one of the three lakes.

BIRD WATCHERS

Scattered throughout the reserve are allocated bird watching viewing posts, from where an array of species can be seen. The Silverlake Estate becomes home to dozens of local and migrating species throughout the year, including a number of red and amber listed species, such as Woodlarks, Warblers, Nightjars and Scaup.

Gulls: A large number of gulls can be found on the reserve throughout the year, including the Blackheaded Gull; Lesser black-backed Gull; Greater BlackBack Gull; and Herring Gull.

KNIGHTON RESERVE | LOCAL EVENTS
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 71

Geese and Ducks: Watch out for large flocks of Canada Goose and Greylag Goose; Gadwall; Wigeon; Tufted Duck; Shoveler; and Mallard.

Waders: In amongst the lakes can be found Little Ringed Plover, which regularly breed at Silverlake, along with Dunlin, Common Sandpiper; Green Sandpiper; Snipe; Little Egret; and Great White Egret.

Birds of prey: In the skies above the SANG Peregrines, Marsh Harriers; Hobby; Buzzard; Red Kite; and Kestrel can be seen hoovering and soaring looking for prey to swoop on.

Other species: In the summer months Sand martins can be found in the purpose build boxes on Sand martin Bank. Walking around the reserve, keen twitchers will also be able to spot House martin, Swift, Woodlark, Skylark, various Warblers, Whitethroat and Black Cap.

HORSE RIDERS

Running around the edge of the SANG is a bridleway which joins with local riding routes, which also cuts through Silverlake’s scattering of residential villages.

ANGLERS

In the centre of the SANG are two adjoined fishing lakes which will be exclusively for the use of members of the onsite Angler’s Club. Within the lakes, anglers will find a selection of Common and Mirror carp, Perch, Bream, Roach, Hybrids and Rudd.

Knighton Reserve will be open for public access from 7 May 2023. Visitors are asked to respect the fact that they are visitors in the home of natural wildlife and take all litter with them, or use the bins provided, as well as keeping dogs on leads in all areas other than Pooch’s Place.

Will Vicary, Director of Land and Planning for Habitat First Group which owns and manages the Silverlake Estate and Knighton Reserve says: “The primary purpose of our SANG at Silverlake is to provide a space for wildlife to thrive in its natural habitat. We are delighted to be able to open this space up to the local community. Open space is incredibly important for mental health and we hope that people will come and enjoy the space, but ask everyone to understand that we all have a responsibility to protect the animals, insects and plant life that have made the SANG their home.”

Expert reveals how to spring clean your home to properly get rid of those nasty germs

Brace yourself fellow germaphobes, the dirtiest object in the home has been revealed - and no it’s not the toilet, but rather the kitchen sponge.

Yes, you heard it right! That innocentlooking sponge sitting in your sink - that’s supposed to clean your home, may be doing more harm than good. Be honest, when was the last time you cleaned it - or even replaced it?

Spring may be in full swing, but data has revealed that us Brits are slacking when it comes to spring cleaning - with only 37% of people revealing they do their annual spring cleaning in their home.

A further 61% admitted that they are only motivated to tidy up when they have some spare time, and 70% only do so when they know guests are arriving.

To address this issue, and get Brits stimulated to flaunt them yellow rubber gloves once more, leading online bathroom retailer Victorian Plumbing has consulted with microbiologist Dr Manal Mohammed (she / her) to reveal the top dirt hotspots in the home to look out for and how to clean them.

Kitchen dirt hotspots include the kitchen cabinet and appliance handles, control panels, as well as the sink and tap, where germs such as E.coli and Salmonella can be commonly found. And we’ve ALL STOPPED sanitising! Pandemic - who?

But these areas have grown, according to Dr Mohammed, as the kitchen has transformed from a place to cook into a place to eat, a place to play for kids and even the odd work teams call (which most likely could have been an email).

CLEANING TIPS

Disinfect sponges once a week to kill germs by soaking them in vinegar for about 5 minutes, and then rinse them in warm water and replace them monthly (based on use). Have two separate chopping boards: one for raw meat and one for fruits and vegetables to reduce cross-contamination.

INTERIORS | HEALTHY HOME MOT
MAY 23 78

CLEANING TIPS

Put the toilet lid and seat down when flushing to prevent the spread of germs. Place your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible. Wash your bath towels every 3-4 days.

Your knife block might just be more filthy than your kitchen floor, especially if it’s wooden - it can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mould, due to moisture accumulating after wet knives are left inside. It might also be worth considering cleanliness when buying or updating your home. Rather than going for the instaworthy rustic wooden cutting board, pick plastic to keep things clean.

Best thing is, you don’t have to be a Mrs Hinch enthusiast to keep your home germ free - you just need to know where to ‘not forget’ to clean. We’ve got you…

Dr Manal Mohammed (she / her) said: “As a microbiologist, it’s important to help people understand that even the cleanest of homes can have hidden hotspots for germs and bacteria. With such busy schedules, it’s often that us Brits forget to clean the areas that we are using on a daily basis, but to

CLEANING TIP

Clean the knife block with hot soapy water and use a narrow brush to scrub the slots then submerge the block in water containing bleach (with a ratio of one tablespoon of bleach to each gallon of water) then allow the block to air dry upside-down

keep those germs and illnesses at bay, stick to three minutes of cleaning per square metre of the room.

And most importantly, don’t leave the cleaning to five minutes before a guest arrives - start working on the dirty hotspot areas at 10am on the weekend, or as soon as there is enough natural light in the room to see the areas clearly, and make sure to dedicate some real time to it - you’ll thank yourself later.”

And now onto the bathroom. The number one rule for Dr Mohammed is to keep your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible. In fact, toothbrushes stored near toilets can become contaminated with millions of bacteria, including E.coli and Staphylococcus, which may increase the risk of infection, particularly for those with a weakened immune system.

And finally, even though there is a cozzy livs crisis, Dr Mohammed also recommends keeping your place well ventilated, especially your bathroom, as bacteria and mould thrive in moist environments.

Joe Pascoe, chief marketing officer at Victorian Plumbing, said: “At Victorian Plumbing, we are dedicated to helping homeowners boss their bathrooms and understand the importance of hygiene and cleanliness in the home. We hope the list of dirty hotspots and tips will help raise awareness of the importance of regular cleaning and good hygiene practices and provide homeowners with practical tips for keeping their homes clean and healthy, especially now we are all working from home more frequently.”

HARRY'S HOUSE Poole

MIDOPENING MAY

Everyone is welcome at Harry’s House but here are some examples that we had in mind when conceiving the project.

HOSPITAL DISCHARGES

There’s a lot of pressure to clear beds nowadays so many patients are deemed fit to go home but may feel daunted by suddenly coping on their own. A week with us will just provide a bridge to gather some strength and organise support for a return to home.

LONG HOSPITAL VISITS

If your child or loved one is going to be in Hospital for a week or more and you aren’t local the last thing you want to do is sit in a soulless hotel room and eat by yourself in a restaurant where everyone else is celebrating.

HOSPICE VISITORS

Nobody needs looking after more than those spending the last days with a loved one. It’s tempting to stay by the bed 24/7 but the feedback from staff is that you should eat properly and get some rest. We will provide a comforting place to help you through these most difficult of times.

TRIALS & INQUESTS

Attending court every day is exhausting and proceedings are often suspended or delayed. Having a base to come back to will help get you through the experience.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

There are times when you just feel like staying with your mum or your best friend and not worry about anything. We have a quiet lounge if you just want to sit and read or maybe socialising around the dinner table will help you feel better.

Each evening there is family dinner so our guests become a community of people sharing their challenges whilst sharing their food.

An Oasis of calm in central Poole close to the hospital, hospices and Poole Park. www.harry-houses.co.uk
At Harry’s House we welcome guests who just need a bit of looking after at a difficult time. Crisp linen, fluffy towels and the sort of individual service you would normally only get in a high end hotel.

Because there’s more to ower power than posies and bouquets, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

As nature buzzes with life and spring flowers burst onto the scene, filling your space with freshly picked finds is more appealing than ever. From pretty petals to darling buds, here’s our pick of the bunch…

Affordable campsites in the UK and Ireland for happy campers 5

Pitching a tent is the cheapest way to holiday this year, says Sarah Marshall.

For centuries, travellers have sought shelter in yurts, tents and make-shift wooden structures. Thankfully, the options for temporary accommodation have improved since then, but camping remains one of the most thrilling ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

Even better, it’s affordable too – with most tent pitches costing less than £20 per night. And as the weather starts to improve, the idea of sleeping under canvas is also more appealing. Book into one of these sites to find out for yourself.

County Down, Ireland

Wake up in a Game of Thrones fantasyland by staying at this campsite not far from the original set used for Winterfell. Overlooking Strangford Lough in County Down, tents can be pitched in woodland, parkland and landscaped gardens. The site is also within easy reach of many hiking trails. If you don’t fancy setting up a campfire, the pubs and restaurants of Strangford village are only a 15-minute walk away.

Brownsea Island, Dorset

Early scouts and girl guides honed their outdoor skills on this wildlife-filled island off the Dorset coast. Visitors usually come for a day trip, but once the last boat has departed, there’s an opportunity to sleep overnight in this campsite overlooking the Purbeck Hills.

Wake up early to watch red squirrels scurrying through the treetops or catch a glimpse of Sika deer slinking through the woodland. Spend days exploring the lagoon, lakes and reedbeds – rich in birdlife – or simply laze on the beach.

Although it’s a bit of a trek to reach the site – located on the south side of the island – a basic campsite shop and cooking facilities will help lighten your load.

Knepp Estate, near Horsham, West Sussex

If an African safari feels too far from economic reach, a weekend at one of Europe’s largest rewilding habitats is a great alternative. Wild ponies, cattle and deer roam the 3,500-acre Knepp Estate, where accommodation includes shepherd’s huts, bell tents with views of ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. For a greater level of comfort, there’s also a treehouse made from sustainably sourced oak, chestnut and Douglas fir, built around a mature oak tree in a secluded part of the forest.

Join a guided safari to learn about the rewilding project, searching for beavers, bats, foxes and owls, or try wild swimming in a pond accessed by a deck of stairs.

Camping facilities include a shop, breakfast baskets, cafe, glamping kitchen, giant pizza ovens, showers and a drying room.

Woodhill Park, East Runton, Norfolk

Norfolk recently played a starring role in Sir David Attenborough’s Wild Isles series, showcasing the variety of wildlife the area has to offer. This cliff-top campsite is ideally located to experience great sightings.

A CoastHopper bus service offers trips to Blakeney to see seals, while plenty of butterflies and birds flutter through the site’s grounds. The Norfolk Coastal Path, stretching 84 miles Hunstanton and Hopton-on-Sea, is also close by.

Grange Farm, Brighstone, Isle of Wight

When a campsite scores points with locals too, you know it must be good. Set on a cliff-top overlooking the English Channel, this family-run set-up has everything: tent pitches, electric hook ups, static caravans and cottages. Part of a farm, it’s also populated by Kunekune pigs, goats, micro pigs, rare breed sheep, horses, water buffalo and donkeys.

It’s an easy stroll to a sandy Brighstone beach, part of a coastline where dinosaur fossils have been found, where conditions are also suitable for surfing. Considered an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Brightone Bay also has plenty of scenic walking trails – while a lack of light pollution means stars shine brightly at night.

My late mother used to make the best beef stew ever, my favourite takeaway would be Chicken Tortillas. I used to get these babes from Piecha’s in Bournemouth! Yum!

RUNNING! In peak Covid-19 Lockdown I took up running 5k around my hometown of Wimborne for the benefits it has to mental health. Ended up being kind of good at it and soon started running competitively for a team mostly sticking between 5-10k races and then finally took on the London Marathon for a local charity Mosaic supporting bereaved children.

What is your favourite music genre?

I like pretty much all genres to be honest. I’m the last person to be a music snob but if I had to pick a favourite genre it would be either Pop or Indie. Big fan of a small Canadian artist called Renforshort. She’s probably a mix of Indie Rock.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what would it be called and why?

“The Life of Tom the Trucker in Dorset”, got a reputation for getting shoutouts all over radio as that title and its stuck around with friends.

If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you buy and why?

I’d buy a student house in Winton and let my 3 closest friends live there rent free. Not just so I could live with them but also make life easier in any way I could for them. Probably buy them a car each too and pay the insurance off for the first 5 years.

Sculpture at Beaulieu returns this summer

With award-winning sculptors and special evening viewings.

Beaulieu’s Palace House will once again be home to more than 300 sculptures this summer, with a new exhibition showcasing the work of over 57 international and national sculptors, throughout the grounds and gardens and inside the Montagu family home.

Sculpture at Beaulieu from June 17th to September 24th will bring together an astonishing variety of eyecatching and thought-provoking works by highly acclaimed sculptors, all taking their places in the atmospheric historic setting.

Building on the success of the previous exhibitions in 2019 and 2021, the sculptures on show will encompass a diverse range of materials and methods, ranging from little to large, stone to steel, glass to mixed media and more. Every piece on show will be for sale, with something to suit all tastes and budgets.

In the Abbey Cloister, award-winning RHS Chelsea exhibitor, sculptor Nicolas Moreton will display an exhibition of work featuring a selection of his figurative stone sculptures. Nicolas will also be at Beaulieu for a number of Sculpture Evenings throughout July and August.

Other featured sculptors include Ireland’s Sandra Bell with her striking cast bronze sculptures, Harmony Altissimo and Emergence Maya 11. Jill Berelowitz and Jonty Hurwitz, both South African, will also be exhibiting. Jill, whose high-profile commissions have been exhibited at Sotheby’s, Heathrow, and RHS Chelsea, is known for her bronze, steel and optical resin works, and amongst her sculptures will be Moving Forward, a collection of three human-form bronze sculptures over two metres high.

Jonty is internationally recognised for his pioneering work in which he creates scientifically-inspired artworks and anamorphic sculptures, including the painted copper and stainless steel Rosso Horse on display in the exhibition.

A collection of ten sculptures by Cheshire-born Joanne Risley will be displayed throughout the gardens, representing forms derived from botany and biology, fabricated using geometric shapes in cor-teen steel.

Local sculptor Michael Turner, who every year creates a trail of handmade poppies around the New Forest in aid of the Royal British Legion, will be contributing other breathtaking stainless steel works to the exhibition.

Another local sculptor, based just a stone’s throw away from Beaulieu, is Gary Boulton, whose eye-catching contemporary sculptures are inspired by nature, yet beautifully crafted from steel.

With a line-up of more than 38 sculptors new to Beaulieu for 2023, along with returning artists showcasing new pieces, Sculpture at Beaulieu curators David Waghorne and Kate McGovern have chosen sculptors for their internationally-acclaimed work and diversity in materials and styles.

Curator David Waghorne said: “We are delighted to be back for a third year at Beaulieu. Once again, every piece has been carefully selected to complement its setting. There will be an eclectic mix of work to be seen, from figurative sculptures and abstract pieces to key signature pieces.

“With its own special atmosphere, the cloister of Beaulieu Abbey is a particularly sensitive area to curate and we think visitors will enjoy Nicolas Moreton’s exhibition within this space.”

Beaulieu’s Head of Marketing Rachael Goldstraw said: “The previous two exhibitions have been very well received by our day visitors as well as sculpture enthusiasts, so we are very much looking forward to the extended run this year.”

There will be five Thursday evenings throughout July and August when a sculpture-only ticket will provide access to the whole exhibition, between 5pm and 8pm.

Rachael added: “These were lovely occasions in 2021, providing the opportunity to explore the sculptures in the warm evening sun with a glass of something cold.”

A catalogue of all the exhibition sculptures will be available to purchase on arrival at Beaulieu’s Visitor Reception, or for a preview of the sculptures on display, visit www.beaulieu.co.uk/events/sculpture-at-beaulieu.

Sculpture at Beaulieu is included in an admission ticket to Beaulieu, which also includes entry to the National Motor Museum, Little Beaulieu, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, the ancestral Montagu home Palace House, Secret Army exhibition, 13th century Beaulieu Abbey and the stunning grounds and gardens.

FLEXITARIAN; OR JUST A NORMAL DIET?

Flexitarian is a word which has only recently appeared in our day-to-day vocabulary but one which seems to be trending in the ever-developing world of people’s dietary needs…

But what does it really mean?

The Oxford dictionary definition is “A person who has a primarily vegetarian diet but occasionally eats meat and fish”. I don’t know about you but this to me appears to be describing what we would call a good old fashioned “balanced diet”, but we have somehow warranted the need to coin a title for it. Why so?

In a market where the extreme is becoming more popular, and restaurants are becoming more and more niche in their menus, it’s hard to keep up with what, how much and how far operators should be going to cater for all everyone’s requirements. It’s a veritable minefield of can and can’t eat, and the worry is that too little or too much might alienate or offend certain foodie types. Which of course no restauranteur wants to do.

I like the idea of this Flexitarian creature, a casual vegetarian who looks for the benefits of a sustainable yet well rounded diet where nothing it off limits but everything is viewed in moderation. It feels inclusive and surely a win win for all those involved?

Why not look to become inclusive all year round, and this Flexitarian ethos is what we’re going to focus on in 2022. Living life in balance sounds like a mantra that we could happily stick to.

LANDLORD LATEST NEWS

Michael Gove, the secretary of state for levelling up, is looking to bring to parliament the Renters Reform Act after the Kings coronation this month!

This is intended to give another shake up within the industry, including the much talked about banning of the Section 21 notice. The Section 8 notice will be amended to include new ways of gaining access to your property if the landlord is looking to gain possession of a property to either move back in or sell the property, as well as the current form where the tenant is in breach of their tenancy.

This will be an interesting legislation and could drive more landlords to exit the market, where rents are already at an all time high due to the lack of stock around.

Other news, the EPC grading of bringing all new and renewing tenancies to a ‘C’ from it’s current ‘E’ was due to come into force in 2025, with all remaining properties being a ‘C’ by 2028. This is looking to be amended to all properties being a ‘C’ by 2028.

And lastly, shockingly, Suella Braveman is planning a crackdown on odious landlords who ask for sexual favours in exchange for rent! Dan Wilson Craw, Deputy Director of Generation Rent, recently has said “…….. Research conducted by Generation Rent and Mumsnet estimates that over 200,000 women could be victims of ‘Sex for Rent’ in the United Kingdom.’ A new law is being looked at being created to stop predatory landlords exploiting tenants for discounted rent.

Let me help you have a more stress free 2023 by managing your properties. Email me for an informal chat on sharon@moveon.biz

Timeless kitchen trends to inspire your next makeover

From posh pantries to energy-efficient appliances, this is what’s on our kitchen wish-list right now.

It’s the hardest working room in the house –and most often the space which requires the biggest outlay to bring it bang up-to-date.

So if you are redoing your kitchen, you’ll want the design, layout and aesthetic to be the best it can be (within budget, of course).

A great kitchen balances function with flair – especially as it’s a room that’s usually working overtime these days, for dining, working and socialising.

According to a kitchen trends survey by home design platform Houzz, 79% of homeowners had last renovated their kitchen more than 10 years ago. And a quarter of those upgrading their kitchen said they were doing it because they could no longer stand the old one.

Looking to renovate or remodel your kitchen? These are some of the top new kitchen trends right now…

A white backdrop

“White will never go out of style, thanks to its calming properties and ability to pair with any design scheme,” says Amit Malhotra, co-founder of Aflux Designs. “We find offwhites and light greys are always popular with our clients.”

backdrop

He says kitchen cabinetry is often where homeowners like to be more adventurous with their colour scheme and showcase their personality, so most prefer a more understated backdrop for their walls, worktop or splashback to allow the cabinets to be the focal point of the space.

“White worktops are especially popular due to their versatility, pairing beautifully with both traditional shaker-style and modern kitchens,” says Malhotra.

Whether it’s a fresh coat of paint for walls or upgrading the worktops and splashback, Houzz editor Victoria Harrison says white is the most popular colour choice according to their kitchen trends survey: “And it’s the perfect backdrop to let other elements of the kitchen shine.”

Durable materials

When designing a kitchen that will last, durability should be a key consideration.

“From cooking to entertaining, your kitchen is often at the centre of the action, so knocks and spills are likely,” says Harrison. “Durable materials will last longer, maintain their aesthetic appeal, and provide a safer and healthier environment for cooking.

“It’s certainly a priority for homeowners according to the survey. Quartz was the most popular material for worktops and vinyl came out on top for flooring, both chosen for their durable properties.”

Diane Berry, founder of Diane Berry Kitchens, agrees: “Quartz for kitchen worktops is tried and tested, and definitely the most popular choice among our customers, with ceramic brands like Dekton and Neolith coming a close second.”

“The various brands of quartz are making some amazing, veined products that really add a wow factor and character to any kitchen – and they will stand the test of time,” she adds.

Sustainability first

“The environmental impact of our homes has become a real focus in recent years, with the vast majority of homeowners incorporating sustainable features during their kitchen renovation,” says Harrison.

With energy bills and the cost of living rising, she says long-term cost-effectiveness is also a driving factor for these choices. While there are always upfront costs to consider, of course Harrison notes: “Sustainable design can help to reduce water and energy consumption, which will save money in the long run.”

Mark Barratt, director at CATO Creative, says the brand’s seeing a big step change away from gas to induction hobs, for example, which can be a more energyefficient choice.

“Hot water taps are also very popular, as they’re far more efficient than kettles for both energy and water,” says Barratt. “Investing in classic, durable fixtures and fittings is a really smart way to be sustainable.”

Zoe Willis, founder of Zoe Willis Design, says: “Particularly in the last 12 months, many clients have expressed the desire to waste less in their kitchen refits, for both cost and environmental reasons.

“We’ve always presented sustainable workarounds to our design and builds, such as reusing cabinet carcasses, or sourcing reclaimed materials that have sustainability in mind while adding character to the spaces we create,” she adds.

At a recent project, she says they mixed new cabinetry with old and sourced reclaimed wood in the form of school doors and science lab counters to make beautiful worktops and shelving.

INTERIORS | KITCHEN TRENDS
OCTOBER 22 ? MAY 23 118

Meanwhile, Emma Merry, founder of Emma Merry Styling, says creating a kitchen that won’t need regular style updates is also a sustainable effort.

“We look for non-trend-led pieces, as these will not date and cause the owners to want to replace and update with a new item in a couple of years’ time,” says Merry. “Opting for contemporary touches with a classic undertone helps us to avoid trend-led waste.”

Pleasing pantries

Harrison says when it comes to built-in features, a pantry is now top of the musthave list, beating a kitchen island, which came in second place.

“It’s not hard to understand why, as these storage workhorses are a practical way to store lots of items, while also making it easy to take stock of supplies,” suggests Harrison.

“With the trend for incorporating a breakfast station into pantry cupboards, small appliances like toasters and kettles are off the counters, helping to keep worksurfaces uncluttered, too.”

Malhotra points out: “Getting organised has gained huge popularity on social media, which we think is certainly a contributing factor to homeowners wanting beautifully designed and organised pantries.

“Not only do they look fantastic when designed with matching jars, boxes and storage containers, they are incredibly practical too, allowing you to manage your food and kitchen items with ease.”

Whether you have a small or large kitchen, Malhotra says a pantry can be introduced into any space and to suit a range of budgets, by amending the quality and specifications to the homeowner’s needs.

Layered lighting

Lighting is another big consideration when designing a kitchen. Designers right now are favouring a layered lighting scheme, to ensure the room can be adapted to different needs throughout the day, says Harrison. “By combining task, accent and ambient lighting via a mixture of under-cabinet lights, ceiling spotlights, low-level LEDs and pendants, your lighting will be able to answer a wide range of needs,” she explains.

Barratt agrees: “Lighting is very important in all of our kitchen designs. We aim to include lots of task lighting, as well as accent and ambient lighting.”

He says they use spotlights to provide task lighting over work surfaces and appliances, to ensure no areas are underlit. “Breaking up the lighting using different circuits and different types of lighting allows us to transform a kitchen from a working area for food preparation, to a subtle dining room or relaxing snug,” he adds.

And while different types of lighting provide different moods, Barratt says he’s often asked if they’ve specified too much kitchen lighting. “But it’s important to remember each of these layers of lighting will have different uses,” he notes, “and help provide a scheme that can be adapted to your needs.”

Grow your own salad bar on your windowsill

You don’t need outdoor space to be able to nurture fresh ingredients, says Hannah Stephenson.

Want to grow summer salads, but don’t have a garden?

Don’t despair! Tomatoes, peppers, leaves and herbs could still be added to your homegrown menu this summer, and they can perk up your windowsill, too…

Garden centre chain Dobbies has introduced a ‘Pick-NJoy’ range of mature plants for those who want to be able to pick tomatoes off the vine and peppers off a plant (available in-store only) – perfect for windowsills.

It’s also easy to grow typical salad herbs, including parsley and basil on your windowsill. You can buy a pot from the supermarket, then split the plant into smaller pots when you get home, to give the overcrowded roots space to grow.

So, what are the best salad ingredients to grow on your windowsill?

Cut-and-come-again leaves

Salad crops, including rocket, loose-leaf lettuce and baby spinach, can be sown thinly on a sunny, indoor windowsill in moist, well-drained compost, suggests garden writer Felicity Hart, author of My Tiny Window Garden (Summersdale, £8.99, out on Apr 13).

For the best results, sow a small amount of seeds every two weeks. If you can’t put the pots outside in summer, try to move them into a partially shaded spot when it’s hot, or the plants will bolt (run to seed) and taste bitter, she advises.

Tomatoes

According to new research from Dobbies and Censuswide, tomatoes are set to be the most popular crop this year.

For those with plenty of time, you could sow a micro ‘house’ variety, which will grow in a 15cm pot on a sunny indoor windowsill. Varieties including ‘Micro Tom’, ‘Heartbreaker Vita F1’ and ‘Vilma’ will all grow on sunny windowsills in small spaces.

Those with limited time for growing and nurturing may choose to buy a plant that has been started off, and is already producing fruits. Dobbies has a range of ‘PickN-Joy’ indoor plants, including tomatoes and peppers, which are already fruiting.

The garden chain’s senior houseplant buyer, Claire Bishop, advises: “Simply water a few times a week as needed, and if you have an outdoor area or balcony, you can place outside during the summer months –although this isn’t necessary as these plants are selfpollinating.” If your windowsill gets enough light and warmth, they’ll continue to grow well into autumn, she predicts.

Microgreens

These little shoots, which have high levels of antioxidants, are among the easiest to grow and are ready in just a week or two for snipping.

“Grow microgreens on a sunny windowsill, either in a seed tray or shallow repurposed food container,” Hart advises.

“Fill the container with peat-free compost and sow the seeds thickly and evenly.”

Water them regularly with a fine spray bottle to keep the compost damp, as microgreens will wilt if underwatered, and harvest when they are 3-5cm tall, she advises. If you want fresh shoots throughout the year, you’ll need to sow at weekly intervals.

Sweet peppers and chillies

You can grow mini peppers and chillies on your windowsill, as long as you have plenty of light and sun. Look for types with small fruits, as well as those that are shorter and narrower.

Chillies may be more suitable, as the plants – and fruits – tend to be smaller.

Check when buying seeds or plug plants that the pepper has ‘dwarf’ or ‘patio’ in the name, as some smaller plants are designed for indoor growing – if you’re not sure, ask at your local garden centre.

Grow them in a good quality compost and give them plenty of water, feeding with diluted tomato fertiliser, once the fruits are set.

MOTORING NEWS

Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.

HYUNDAI I10 –GROWN UP CITY CAR

If you’ve always thought a small, nippy city car would be useful but ruled one out on the grounds that utilitarianism isn’t your thing, then it’s time to think again. Hyundai’s very diminutive i10 has been around for a long time but consistent updates on both style and tech have provided it with a rather smart look and chic style.

Despite its compact proportions it looks and feels a properly grown-up car, and in Premium trim is an incredibly well-equipped machine with features that would put some larger and more expensive cars to shame. The range starts at £14,995 and the mid-range Premium models at £16,295 with the option of 1.0-litre three cylinder normally aspirated and turbo petrol engines or a 1.2-litre fourcylinder unit. Manual and automated manual transmissions are available.

The Premium model comes as standard with climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, privacy glass, keyless entry and start, cruise control, high beam

assist, front fog lights, Bluetooth, powered and heated door mirrors plus a rear parking camera of a most impressive resolution. The optional Tech Pack on my car added navigation, wireless Android Auto and Car Play, wireless charging pad and DAB along with an 8” touchscreen, again of impressive resolution.

The 1.2-litre engine isn’t fast but more than capable and returns good economy with a smooth ride and easy 5-speed manual

gearbox. The drive feels very grown up from the start thanks to the smoothness of the engine and the insulation from the outside world. Now if this hasn’t got you thinking a city runabout might be just the thing then I don’t know what will, because they don’t come much better than the i10.

However, there had to be a but in there somewhere and its price. At £18,095 (including that optional Tech Pack at £1,000) the i10’s economic fuel consumption isn’t entirely matched by its price. True, many of the established models like Corsa and Fiesta do cost more, but look at Kia’s Picanto, Suzuki’s Swift, Citroen’s C3 and Toyota’s Aygo X. Even a lead-in super trendy Fiat 500 can be had for under £17,000.

It’s a tad expensive then, compared to some rivals, but the price tag is offset by the big car equipment, refined drive, perky and long-legged 1.2-litre engine, grownup feel for a small car and an interior that’s surprisingly spacious. I really did think about pretending to be out when they came to collect it back!

ROAD TEST: POLESTAR 2 - COOL, TRENDY AND EMINENTLY CAPABLE EV

Mention electric cars to even the least car aware person and it’s highly likely they’ll talk Tesla. It’s been the EV brand of choice and remained relatively unchallenged.

However, there’s a similarly cool, trendy and eminently capable rival in the form of the Polestar 2. While not carrying the sleek and smooth exterior of the Tesla the Polestar, part of the Volvo stable, has a determined and muscular stance. Inside there’s a definite Scandinavian vibe with a range of stylish treatments from light wood and fabrics to Nappa leather and black ash veneers. It’s a very nice place to be seated.

A large central screen, which still doesn’t cut it over buttons in my view, is reasonably intuitive with exceptionally clear graphics. Although the interior is definitely minimalist there’s no loss of premium feel. As with the exterior of the car it’s the archetypal less is more effect that has been executed so well by Polestar.

Standard features across all Polestar 2 models includes automatic lights and wipers, heated powered seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, high beam assist, adaptive LED rear lights, navigation, climate, keyless entry and start, auto lights and wipers, wireless charging, electric steering with three modes and Apple Car Play and Google built-in and one of the best standard in-car audio systems. Four extra cost option packs are offered depending on model.

On the power front you can specify a standard single motor, a long-range version and then a long-range dual motor. The range varies with the configuration, but 321 to 395 miles is the variance. In real world terms think of decreasing these figures by about 10 per cent and you probably would be about at your real-world range. In my experience the Polestar comes close to meeting its mileage expectations. As with combustion powered cars range depends on how you drive. These range figures aren’t quite up to Tesla standard but they’re still very useable and, considering the weight and style of the Polestar, most impressive.

On the road the Polestar has a certain something which makes it special. Power delivery is smooth and effortless with admirable insulation from road and wind noise. Unlike so many cars the safety tech, such as lane keep, is more progressive and less interventionist when activated.

With prices starting from £44,950 for the single motor version it’s an EV that merits much praise and one which is an increasingly frequent presence on the road.

MINI CLUBMAN BOWS OUT WITH FINAL EDITION

In 1969, the first Mini Clubman rewrote the rule book. It was an instant hit in the 1970’s automotive market with its long wheelbase, extended shooting-brake body, and characteristic split doors at the rear.

Reimagined by BMW in 2007, the first modern MINI Clubman delivered a contemporary interpretation; rear passenger seats were accessed through a rear hinged door, and unfortunately for the UK on the right hand side of the car. With the third generation in 2015, the Clubman increased in length offering more space and two full-size rear doors.

Today, the MINI Clubman Final Edition is a globally limited run of 1,969 units - paying homage to the launch year of the original vehicle - with just 100 models for the UK.

Powered by a Cooper S engine that delivers 178 hp the Final Edition has a single specification with a choice of three exterior paint colours. Shimmer Copper details can be found on the surrounds and upper third of the radiator grille crossbar, side scuttles and Cooper ‘S’ blade on the rear.

The 18” Final Edition two-tone alloy wheels are finished in a tinted clear lacquer to give a copper hue, while exclusive ‘Final Edition’ lettering on the rear and “1 of 1969” badge on the C-pillar side completes the exterior.

The interior features door sill trims embellished with “Final Edition” lettering which are also found on the lower spoke of the Nappa leather steering wheel. Leather sports seats – finished exclusively in Dark Maroon Leather – offer sewnin edition-specific badging, seat heating and adjustable thigh support. Anthracite-coloured Piquet fabric inserts, and blue contrast stitching further complement the seat design. There’s also a Panoramic Glass Sunroof and rear privacy glass.

The MINI Clubman Final Edition will be produced in a limited run of just 1,969 units globally, with 100 destined for the UK. Available to order from retailers now it is priced at £37,000. My guess is they won’t have a problem selling each and every one of them.

ARE COACHBUILT CARS MAKING A RETURN?

From the earliest days of motoring, cars were built on a rolling chassis to which a body could be added by a coachbuilder. Some of the best known proponents of this art were, and are starting to be again, Rolls-Royce.

Names such as Mulliners, Hooper, Park Ward and Thrupp and Maberly produced bodies that adorned the likes of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Alvis and Daimler. In the 1960s Vanden Plas featured on models such as the Vanden Plas Princess R powered by a Rolls-Royce engine. More ignominiously it also appeared on much later BL models such as the Allegro! Another coachbuilder was Swallow, based in Blackpool, which started life as Swallow Sidecars and ultimately became Jaguar.

Coachbuilt cars were still not uncommon in the early 1960s, but as monocoque construction took hold it reduced production costs and time while retaining the integral strength of the body. It pretty

much sounded the death knell for the coachbuilding industry and if names survived they were reduced to little more than a badge on a posh version of a mass produced model.

A couple of years ago Rolls-Royce produced three coachbuilt Boat Tail models that at the time were rumoured to be the most expensive cars in the world at around £23 million each. They have now begun what they call the next chapter following on from those initial boat tail models. Many luxury car makers use a spaceframe substructure which allows for more design and manufacturing freedom. However the costs of such cars will always be beyond normal motoring folk.

Inadvertently though we may have already witnessed the birth of a new generation of effectively coachbuilt cars. Many car makers have amalgamated, for example Stellantis owns Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep, Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel, Vauxhall plus a slew of other brands. Volkswagen Audi Group is another example with the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda brands amongst their particular garage.

Even where there hasn’t been a merger or amalgamation, automotive coalescences have taken place. The reportedly less than harmonious Renault-Nissan alliance has survived for over two decades, and Toyota has a small interest in Suzuki. All these couplings allow manufacturers to share underpinnings of body and mechanical components. Toyota’s Supra and BMW’s Z4 share the same underpinnings despite one being a roadster and the other a coupe. Skoda’s Octavia, SEAT’s Leon and Audi’s A3 all share the same platform under their bodies.

So even those of us that drive more humble vehicles may have inadvertently become the owners of a new generation of coachbuilt cars.

ROAD TEST: SUZUKI S-CROSS HYBRID – REFINED CAPABILITY

There seems to be more and more SUVs on the road, whether this is entirely personal choice on behalf of the buyers, or clever marketing, is a very debateable point. SUVs do get a bad press and it’s unfair as not all SUVs fall into that category of overly large gas guzzlers. There are many smaller versions, and even the larger ones now come with self-charging or plug-in hybrid as part of the power deal.

Suzuki has a long and well-deserved reputation for making very capable offroaders but have of recent years moved into SUVs with two wheel drive. Whether you’re looking at the Ignis, Vitara or S-Cross they all have the option of 2 or 4-wheel-drive. The S-Cross has just been relaunched in new mild or full hybrid form.

Priced from £26,099 even the lead-in model is bestowed with a particularly generous level of standard equipment. The list includes adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors with rear view

camera, led lights, powered, heated and folding door mirrors along with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Two trim levels and the option of 2 or 4-wheel-drive, manual or automatic gears and mild or full hybrid.

My test model was the top-line Ultra model in full hybrid form which means a 1.5-litre normally aspirated engine and automatic gears. The standard equipment list is even more generous than the lead-in model, as it should be with a £32,649 price tag, and includes a super, full length sliding panoramic glass roof. There is a distinctly

more upmarket feel, the Vitara is well built but uses a lot of not very tactile plastics on the interior, to new Suzuki models and the S-Cross is no exception. There’s a clean layout and everything from the auto gear shift lever to the touchscreen works crisply.

On the road it’s smooth, refined and quiet, unless you floor the accelerator when the automated manual gearbox does become vocal. This is a characteristic of this kind of gearbox but the S-Cross is far from being the most vocal in my experience. It’s a different style of driving that’s soon second nature. Performance from the 1.5-litre engine isn’t sparkling (go for the manual 1.4-litre boosterjet which is much quicker) but that said it feels anything but pedestrian.

Suzuki produce some very underrated cars in my view and the S-Cross, despite the cost at the flagship end of the range meaning it’s up against stiff competition, is certainly one of them.

POOLE AUDI IS THE UK’S AUDI CENTRE OF THE YEAR

We are delighted to have been recognised as ‘Audi Centre of the Year 2022’ by Audi UK. This award is presented annually to the Audi Centre which has achieved a consistently high performance across both the sales and aftersales departments.

I want a specific make of car even though I know it may not be the right move?

We will advise a client if we believe that a particular deal or choice is not the right one for them going forward. This does have potential to lose us a deal, but I’d rather that than be the one to contribute to an unnecessary or high-risk choice for the client. Of course, the choice is entirely theirs but I’d prefer they were provided with good, critical advice to make an informed decision.

So how do I get the best deal?

The team work with each client to understand their individual needs, this means we can tailor deals to suit their budgets, contract lengths, car requirements and annual mileage needs. This is crucial because a deal can look better due to lower monthly payments, generated entirely by using an annual mileage that is way too low, for example. But this just causes negative equity when it comes to change and can potentially incur heavy costs that could easily have been avoided.

What’s best for me – a new or used car?

New and used cars are available through RB Prestige. We don’t add profit on profit, instead we negotiate the best price for the

client and present them with a deal with no hidden fees or anything else to pay…there are certainly no admin fees to RB Prestige. We don’t offer any incentives to partners either, purely because we believe this detracts from the client getting “the best deal”.

Do you deliver?

We personally deliver every vehicle to our clients, when possible, across the entire UK. When needed, we can arrange a transporter for the vehicle too. But, when we can, we like to bring, present and hand over the vehicle to the client ourselves to continue the trusted relationship.

Do you provide an after-care service?

Where possible, we will always utilise our relationships with manufacturers to supply a car that has a full-service history, complete mileage checks and a comprehensive warranty that offers full peace of mind to the client. Our used cars will have a minimum sixmonth warranty, extending where necessary and at the request of the client. Of course, we remain the point of contact, handling anything from chipped windscreens, to servicing, we’re even on hand 24-hours a day to assist with anything out of the ordinary, from punctures to car park dents, and more.

I want my car customised – can you do this?

We provide a full range of customisation options through our trusted network of suppliers which includes vehicle wraps, window tints, alloy wheel refurbishments and more. Just tell us how you want the car to look like and we can do the rest!

In addition to our showroom and sourcing facility, we have valued contacts at the likes of Mercedes, VW, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche and most other marques across the board, whereby we can source the best products and packages possible for everyone from their first car to their dream car.

We really are only interested in getting clients off to the right start with their car purchasing by managing their expectations and requirements throughout, and not leaving them in any precarious financial situation as they enjoy and progress through their car buying adventure.

There are some cars that operate under the radar, you can forget they’re out there and this is arguably the case with Honda’s CRV. It isn’t exciting, it’s not head turning and it’s certainly not going to set your motoring senses aflame. What it does though is provide ultra-reliable, comfortable and well equipped family transport. The build quality is superb, in fact it puts some premium models to shame, and even the lead-in model comes extremely well equipped.

You get leather upholstery, heated front seats, windscreen wiper de-icer, auto wipers, auto LED lights, powered, heated, reverse tilting, folding door mirrors, parking sensors front and rear, cornering lights, auto high beam headlights, auto dimming rear view mirror, adaptive cruise control, dual zone climate control, navigation with Car Play and Android Auto and a plethora of safety kit that’s not overly intrusive, unlike so many modern cars.

The Honda comes with a 2.0-litre, fourcylinder petrol unit that’s mated to a twin

However the costs of such cars will always be beyond normal motoring folk.

electric motor hybrid system that recharges on the move. The system automatically uses the most efficient drive whether electric, hybrid or engine. It’s a perfect compromise for those who see having to plug-in your hybrid or electric car as a bit of a faff. Inside it’s remarkably spacious and there’s plenty of room for the family to stretch out, not to mention stow all their luggage.

The range starts from £36,580 and there are three trim levels with two or four-wheeldrive and just one 2.0-litre engine. As with most electric and hybrid vehicles the

Inadvertently though we may have already witnessed the birth of a new generation of effectively coachbuilt cars. Many car makers have amalgamated, for Stellantis owns Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep, Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel, Vauxhall plus a slew of other brands. Volkswagen Audi Group is another example with the Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda brands amongst their particular garage.

transmission system is automatic, however the Honda uses a single fixed-gear ratio creating a direct connection between moving components. Otherwise known as e-CVT.

While very smooth, under hard acceleration it is noisy, this is in direct contrast to lower speed city driving and cruising when the CR-V is impressively quiet and refined. The transmission and drive modes – EV, Econ and Sport – are all switch operated and make for a compact and easy to use driving environment.

On the road it’s a genuinely nice drive and surprisingly nimble, the ergonomics are first class with a touch screen and instruments of excellent clarity. The 2WD version reaches 62 mph in 8.6 seconds, so impressive for a low powered large car. It may be discreet and sensible, as opposed to so many models that are overtly bold and-in-your-face, but that’s the secret of its success. It’s a touch of class, and class doesn’t have to announce its presence.

Tess Daly: I don’t want to encourage my daughters to count calories

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter talks about the healing powers of food – and her secret beauty ingredient

Tess Daly says she’ll never pay attention to calories – because of the negative impact it could have on her teenagers. “What’s the point? Are you going to maintain that forever? I don’t count calories, I don’t want to encourage my daughters to do it,” she says. “Really, we can all tell when we feel full, or if we overeat.”

The Strictly Come Dancing host (Daly has presented the BBC show for 19 years) has two daughters with husband Vernon Kay –Phoebe, 18, and Amber, 13.

Instead, the 53-year-old wants to teach them not to “judge themselves too harshly”. She knows first-hand how problematic weight pressures on young women can be. Before her primetime TV career, Daly was a model traveling the globe from age 18.

“I was an awkward and gangly teenager, I’d run down to the beach holding the lilo in front of me, because I felt embarrassed in a swimsuit,” she says. “Then I entered a world where people were not eating food because they were being told their weight might be an issue.

“I’d be around people who were battling whether or not to eat certain things. I was told by agents, ‘You should put weight on’, ‘You should lose weight’ – something different from week to week. And as far as I was concerned, nothing had changed.

“So I just realised quite early that people tend to have different opinions, and you couldn’t keep everybody happy all the time. So I might as well just keep myself happy.”

After 11 years posing for the camera, she realised it was time to pursue something else: “You get to a stage where you don’t want it to just be about your appearance, you want it to be about the content of your character – that’s when I thought it’s time to move on.”

That healthy relationship with food (“one of life’s great pleasures”) stuck – and now Daly has released her first health and cookery book, 4 Steps To A Happier, Healthier You. In it, she shares the affordable and accessible hacks that help her feel good, from nutrition and exercise, to breathing and sleeping.

“Looking after our health and wellbeing is no longer a luxury, I think it is a necessity. I’m as guilty as the next person of putting everyone else in my life first, and putting the to-do list before myself,” she reflects.

“Every single woman I know is wearing an invisible superhero cape, she is juggling everything. Women are life’s fixers, we are nurturers, we are caregivers, we have so many roles. Every woman I know is trying so hard to stay on top of everything for everybody.”

Daly is the main cook in her famous household, although Vernon makes a mean roast (“His roasties are amazing”) – and she’s all about healthy comfort food.

“You’re not sacrificing on satisfaction, but it’s quite nice to know that what you’re cooking for those you love [has] a lot of nutritional properties.

“I love food, I love cooking, I love feeding my family healthy dishes. But it’s a constant challenge because I’ve got teenagers and their tastes change from week to week.”

4 Steps to a happier healthier you, by Tess Daly (Bantam Press, £18.99) | Bantam Press/PA

Hailing from Stockport, white potatoes featured heavily in her childhood, she says. “I love white potatoes, it’s soul food for me. I grew up on them – seven days a week. I’ve got Northern and Irish blood, so it’s what we eat. But they don’t always like me. I eat them because I love them, but they tend to make me a little bit bloated.”

She’s been focussing on her gut health for years. “I’m fascinated by the power of food to be medicine or poison. It can either heal you, or food can cause illness.

“If you’ve got an unhappy gut – and you’ve got more sort of bad bacteria than good bacteria – then it’s going to affect your digestion, it’s going to affect your sleep, it’s going to affect your mood, it’s going to affect the production of serotonin, your happy hormones, and obviously hormones totally govern the way we feel.”

Her book brings in experts in different areas to really dig into this stuff. You can expect to find immune-supporting recipes

like pumpkin and ginger soup, and gutfriendly crunchy superfood salad, or gently fermented coleslaw. Meanwhile, comforting, family-friendly dishes include a crowd-pleaser turkey shepherd’s pie (much easier on your digestive system than red meat) and golden chicken nuggets with sweet potato mash (with a gut-friendly yoghurt marinade).

“It feels wonderful when if you can eat food that you really enjoy, that is doing wonderful things for your body at the same time,” Daly says.

Breakfast is important for her, particular during Strictly filming. “It’s 15-hour days and you have to pace yourself, often you are barely sitting down at all. So I always make sure I have a good breakfast,” she says. “I’ll take some Greek yoghurt, some berries, seeds, maybe banana and some honey, and just chop all that out. At least I know I’ve had something substantial, and then I’ll graze throughout the day.”

And all those vitamins and nutrients probably have something to do with her TV-perfect hair and glowing skin. “They’re all interlinked,” Daly stresses. “For me, if I

sleep well, my mood is boosted, and my skin looks better, I can see it in my skin. I’m at an age now where everything shows in your skin – you can’t get away with a late night because it shows.”

So she eats healthily but never deprives herself (“that’s just misery to me”) and makes sure she stays hydrated. One of her secret beauty ingredients is ginger.

“I eat lots of fresh ginger. I’ll make ginger tea, I use ginger in pretty much most of my meals. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and [it] helps get rid of puffiness.”

Skipping, she says, helps her lymphatic system, and she’s a fan of practising nasal breathing to boost her skin too. “Whenever I breathe through my mouth, for example, if your nose is blocked, the next day you wake up and your skin feels dry – it feels dehydrated, it looks dehydrated, it just doesn’t look as glowy and fresh and well-slept.”

For Daly, the best beauty secrets are free, too. “It doesn’t cost you anything to sleep, it doesn’t cost you anything to breathe.”

Potato pesto pasta

INGREDIENTS

300g pasta

300g salad or new potatoes, sliced

1 leek, sliced into 5mm rounds

150g asparagus tips, sliced on the diagonal or 1 courgette, thinly sliced Salt

A squeeze of lemon juice

Freshly grated Parmesan

For the pesto:

50g basil leaves

½ garlic clove

25g pine nuts

25g Parmesan or vegetarian alternative

A pinch of salt

50ml olive oil

INGREDIENTS

2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced

1 red pepper, diced

1 green pepper (or another red pepper), diced

2 red onions, cut into wedges

1 courgette, diced

2tbsp olive oil

15g butter

1 red chilli, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

½tsp ground turmeric

A few sprigs of soft herbs (basil, coriander, mint, tarragon, anything you like), shredded

75g frozen peas, defrosted

6 eggs, well beaten

200g feta, cubed

Salt and black pepper

SERVES 4

1. First, make the pesto. Put the basil leaves, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan in a food processor with a pinch of salt.

2. Pulse, pushing down regularly, until the basil starts to break down, then drizzle in the oil until you have a bright green, slightly textured paste.

3. Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and add a heaped teaspoon of salt.

4. Add the pasta and potatoes and cook for around eight minutes, then add the leek.

5. Continue to cook until the pasta and potatoes are just al dente, then add the asparagus or courgette and cook just for another minute.

6. Drain the pasta and vegetables, and return to the saucepan.

7. Stir in the pesto, then taste. Add a squeeze of lemon, if you like, then serve with more Parmesan sprinkled over.

Fill-me-up frittata

1. Preheat oven to 200°C/gas 6.

SERVES 4

2. Put the sweet potato, peppers, onion and courgette in a roasting tin and drizzle over half the oil. Season with salt and pepper, then cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.

3. Remove the foil and check the vegetables are tender, then continue to cook, uncovered, for a further 10 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan or wellseasoned skillet. Add the chilli and garlic and sauté for two to three minutes, just to take away the harsh raw flavour from the garlic. Stir in the turmeric.

5. Add the roast vegetables, the herbs and the peas, and stir to coat in the oil. Season the eggs with salt and pepper, then pour this around the vegetables. Top with the cheese.

6. Preheat your grill to medium-high. Cook the frittata over a high heat until you can see the underside has set and browned, then transfer to the grill and continue to cook until the eggs are set and have puffed up slightly. The cheese will be soft and creamy.

7. Leave to stand for a few minutes, then carefully cut into wedges. Good hot or cold.

INGREDIENTS

2tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, very finely chopped

4 garlic cloves, crushed

500g turkey mince

50g frozen sweetcorn, defrosted

50g frozen peas, defrosted

A few sprigs of coriander, very finely chopped

50g breadcrumbs (preferably wholemeal)

25g thick live yogurt

1 egg

Salt and black pepper

To assemble:

50g Cheddar cheese or similar, grated (optional)

1 large avocado, peeled and sliced

Juice of 1 lime

4 burger buns or large lettuce leaves

2tbsp pickled jalapeños

A few salad leaves

1 large tomato, thinly sliced

Turkey burger SERVES

4

1. First, make the burgers. Heat half the oil in a frying pan and add the onion. Sauté on a medium-low heat until the onion is soft and translucent, then add the garlic. Stir for another minute or two, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.

2. Put the turkey mince in a bowl with the onion and garlic mixture, and all the remaining burger ingredients. Season well and mix thoroughly. The easiest way to do this is with your hands. The mixture will feel very soft to start with – keep turning it over in your hands and lightly kneading it until it starts to feel firmer.

3. Divide the mixture into four and shape into large patties. Chill in the fridge for an hour, if possible – this will make them easier to handle when you cook them.

4. When you’re ready to cook the burgers, remove them from the fridge. Heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan and add the burgers, well-spaced out. Fry for several minutes on each side – you will know when they are ready to flip as they will look cooked up the sides and will come away cleanly from the pan. Make sure they are completely cooked through. If you have a probe thermometer, they should read 72°C, or if you insert the tip of a knife, it should be almost too hot to press between your fingers for longer than a second.

5. If adding the cheese, arrange over the burgers and cover with a lid to help it melt.

6. To assemble, toss the avocado with the lime juice. Place a burger on the bottom half of a bun, then top with the avocado, jalapeños, salad leaves and tomato. Serve with any other condiments you like.
