SPECTACULAR AUTUMN VEGAN EVENT ANNOUNCED FOR BOURNEMOUTH
Vegan Events UK is pleased to announce details of its latest festival in its series of vegan extravaganzas across the UK for autumn. These festivals are some of the best places you can go to find out more about the vegan lifestyle, try some new food and meet with other vegans. And they include the newly announced Bournemouth Vegan Festival on Saturday 30th September 2023.
NEW NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM GALLERY BRINGS LE MANS INTO FOCUS
A new permanent gallery at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu will showcase rarely seen archive photographs from the museum’s collections. The first exhibition will be a special selection depicting the famous Le Mans 24 hour sports car race to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first race.
The ‘In Focus’ gallery creates a space that will have temporary exhibitions of photographs, artwork, motoring objects and memorabilia – drawing from the museum’s collection of over 1.7 million items.
The Le Mans photographs depict the stages of the famous endurance race, from the start line sprint through to the checkered flag.
BEAULIEU
www.beaulieu.co.uk
Gail Stewart-Bye, Senior Curator Objects and Exhibitions says, “This exhibition offers a rare chance to see a selection from our extensive photographic archive. Some of the photographs selected for this exhibition include images which are fine examples of the work of Maxwell Boyd, the renowned motor sports photographer of the 1950s and 60s.”
Le Mans – The Race of the Century will be in the National Motor Museum ‘In Focus Gallery’ from 3 June until the 10 September.
The Le Mans exhibition will be followed in September by The Magic of the Marque –celebrating 100 years of MG.
These vegan festivals are for everyone, whether you’re flexitarian, vegetarian, vegan, looking to reduce your meat intake or increase the amount of plant-based food you consume. There’s lots to inspire, with talks, recipe ideas and information on going vegan. And admission is free for under 16s.
You’ll be spoilt for choice at these exciting events, with world food caterers or if you prefer something more traditional, there’ll be UK staples like fish and chips, burgers and hotdogs. You’ll also find foods that you won’t see in the shops, making it a totally unique gastronomic experience.
There will also be charities and not-forprofit organisations attending including animal welfare charity Miracle’s Mission.
Bournemouth Vegan Festival features over 60 fantastic stalls, world food caterers and free samples running throughout the day at Citygate Centre from 10.30am to 4pm.

THE DUKE OF KENT VISITS THE BEEHIVE
A Royal visit was enjoyed by everyone at The Beehive, the adult therapy and activity centre run by Diverse Abilities, in celebration of the charity’s Splash Appeal.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent KG visited on Wednesday 7 June for a tour of the centre, and met invited guests, staff, and students at The Beehive.
The Duke of Kent is the Royal patron of The Splash Appeal, the charity’s capital appeal to build a therapy pool especially for adults with profound and life-long disabilities in Dorset. His Royal Highness was given a tour of the centre and viewed newly approved plans for the life-changing pool.
The Duke took the opportunity to engage with the people supported at the centre, hearing about the activities they were taking part in including Father’s Day crafts, baking in the specialist training kitchen, and taking part in physiotherapy sessions.
Find out more about The Splash Appeal and how you can get involved at thesplashappeal. org.uk, or visit diverseabilities.org.uk to find out more about Diverse Abilities and the services it provides.
LIGHTHOUSE ACADEMY EXPANDS LEARNING AND ARTISTIC SUPPORT
Lighthouse is proud to announce the launch this week of Lighthouse Academy, offering unique talent development and high quality training opportunities in the arts to young people and artists.
The new flagship programme for creative engagement at Lighthouse, the Academy aims to be a beacon for artistic progression and development in the south-west, nationally, and internationally, acting as a hub for artists, community members, and young people to explore creative ideas and develop artistic networks.
“Lighthouse Academy is not your classic school; it is a school of thought,” explains Martha Earley, Creative Engagement Manager. “We believe in training and supporting young people and artists to create their own work. We want to develop pathways and open doors for artists and young people. Lighthouse Academy is a beacon, a hub of creative energy - we are just here to facilitate the growth.”
The Academy’s work falls into two broad strands of activity:
Next Generation Lighthouse: opportunities for young people including existing Young Writers and Young Technicians courses as well as forthcoming new courses for Young Producers and Young Performers working towards creating a Next Generation Festival.
Lighthouse Academy will also develop a new Youth Board to advise and inform strategic decision-making and continue the successful Partner Schools initiative.
Artists at Lighthouse: developing relationships with all levels and disciplines of artists, from visual artists to performing artists from all backgrounds. This incorporates the Sanctuary programme of artistic residencies and the expansion of R&D support establishing the Sherling Studio as a creation space for artist development. The Academy also incorporates the Lighthouse Playwriting Network online forum, in-person networking events and an open call playwriting event for 10-minute plays to be recorded at Lighthouse.
These two strands focus on offering training and development to young people and artists who are looking to grow and develop their careers in the creative industries.
“Lighthouse Academy is at the beginning of its journey in establishing its pedagogy. However, it already has a rich history of working in partnership with wonderful arts organisations and applying 360° learning to projects, allowing participants to learn about all elements of the business when training as an actor/writer/technician.”

COLOUR & PATTERN IN YOUR HOME
Choosing the right colour, pattern and wallpaper for interiors can significantly enhance the overall look and feel of a room. Here I talk about some of the key factors that can guide you to make your choice.
Consider the room’s purpose: Different colours and patterns can evoke different emotions and moods. For example, warm colours like red, terracotta, and yellow can create a cosy and inviting atmosphere, while cool colours like blue and green can induce calmness and relaxation. Consider the room’s purpose when choosing the colour and pattern and the amount of time that you tend to spend in that room.
Mix and match patterns: Mixing patterns can create a visually interesting space, but it’s essential to do it carefully. Use patterns with different scales, balance bold patterns with more subtle ones and stick to a limited colour palette to avoid overwhelming the space.
Choose a focal point: A bold wallpaper or a stand out colour can serve as the focal point of a room. Use this as an opportunity to express your personality or style, but make sure it doesn’t take over the whole room.
If you would like some advice on furnishings for your home, why not book a Design Consultation at our studio in Burley.
We will have more helpful tips for you in August’s issue.

Enjoying your garden all year round…
Staying in the shade is in With temperatures set to keep soaring this Summer, and the MET Office suggesting that 2023 will be one of the hottest years on record, finding ways to keep cool – that don’t involve being confined inside with a fan – is becoming a number one priority.
Last year’s heatwave saw thermometers reaching a scorching 40°C in July, giving some Mediterranean holiday destinations a run for their money, and it looks like we’re on track for a repeat scenario this year.
Historically, we Brits don’t claim to be the most experienced when it comes to knowing how to act in the blazing heat –there’s a reason why the phrase ‘only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ rings so true.
For garden inspiration, the friendly and knowledgeable team at Poole-based Broadview Shading Solutions, offer the very best in shading options from pergolas and awnings to glass roof shading and parasols.
Inspired by the Med
Residential Spanish gardens are rarely seen without some form of adaptable shade, with retractable or louvred pergolas featuring in the smallest to the largest outdoor spaces.
OUTDOOR LIVING | BROADVIEW SHADING SOLUTIONS
JULY 23 24
Creating a protective, cool environment, pergolas make it possible to relax outside (even in that infamous midday sun) without dealing directly with the sun’s rays.
Broadview, the leading shading solutions specialist in Dorset, have been providing homes across the UK with innovative ways to keep cool for over 50 years, with an inspiring range of retractable roof pergolas, awnings and glass roof shading.
Creating additional living space outdoors, pergolas have the benefit of being highly adaptable, and with a wide range of different models with different features and functionality, all manufactured by marketing leader Brustor, the options are endless.
When the Summer temperatures cool, pergola roofs can be retracted, or the louvres tilted, to benefit from the evening’s golden hour - perfect for eating meals al-fresco or entertaining friends and family.
BROADVIEW SHADING SOLUTIONS | OUTDOOR LIVING
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 25
The best part is, pergolas from Broadview even make it possible to get more from the garden in Winter – offering protection from rain and with optional integrated heating when the Summer sun fades to a hazy memory, the opportunity to enjoy more time outside still remains.
Laid-back flexibility
Taking a cue from the South of France, one of the best ways to achieve a laidback enjoyment of whatever the weather has in store is to be prepared. There’s a reason French cafes and restaurants on the continent are fitted with stylish retractable awnings – once you’re covered (literally) for any weather, it’s much easier to sit back and relax.
Offering the perfect way to create shade at a touch of a button, residential awnings provide the ideal level of flexibility in summer. Wall mounted to your property, they take up very little space when retracted, but are able to create as much, or as little, shade as you desire. They’re a great choice for both small and large gardens and make it so much more pleasant to enjoy the outdoors.
OUTDOOR LIVING | BROADVIEW SHADING SOLUTIONS
JULY 23 26
Plus, with modern awnings available from Broadview in a range of colours and the option for motor operation, not only are they hardwearing, they are able to withstand windspeeds of close to 50km/h, and you can also have them fitted with integrated lights and heaters so there’s no need to hide away indoors once summer is over either.
Cooler homes
Face the upcoming weather with a new sense of confidence when you opt for a modern and sophisticated shading solution from Broadview.
Our collection of awnings, pergolas and roof shades, manufactured in Europe by Brustor, offer homeowners bespoke shading solutions for getting the most out of their outdoor space - keeping cool in the Summer months yet enjoying the outdoors all year round.
For more information about our versatile shading options for staying cool this Summer and ways to get more enjoyment from your garden throughout the seasons, speak to an adviser from Broadview Shading Solutions.

How not to get ripped off when upgrading your kitchen
Kitchen experts share their top tips for affordable ways to breathe new life into the hub of the home.
By Sam Wylie-Harris.
When it comes to project planning, a new kitchen scheme can be a tale of two halves – style and function.
As Jen Nash, senior design lead at Magnet puts it: “The kitchen can be one of the most complex rooms to redesign in the home, as it demands not only style, but inherent functionality.”
From selecting flooring and appliances to cabinetry and storage, she says the multitude of decisions that come with a kitchen renovation can be overwhelming.

“Many people think they need to undertake a whole new kitchen renovation for all these elements to tie together and transform the space,” says Nash. “But in reality, there are plenty of clever design tricks you can use to avoid the substantial cost of a renovation, whilst still rejuvenating.”
But before you kick-start your kitchen makeover, every project needs a plan. “Whether you’re modifying an existing kitchen, designing a brand new layout or creating an extension, planning is the most important stage in the process,” stresses Ben Burbidge, MD, Kitchen Makers.
“Always tailor your concepts to your budget and leave contingency for unexpected issues,” says Burbridge. “It’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve – and how you can use the space most efficiently.
“Any structural work, such as sky lights, changing entrances, moving pipes and rewiring, will add significant costs to the project,” he adds.
To put you on the front foot, here’s how to spend – not splurge – when planning your scheme…
Revitalise existing cabinetry
‘’With cabinetry being a large focal point of the kitchen, updating it is one of the easiest ways to transform your kitchen,” suggests Nash.
But if your budget doesn’t allow for new cabinetry, she says painting them yourself can be the more affordable alternative, providing the same effect. “Sand down your existing cabinetry, apply a primer and then paint them the colour of your choice. Whether you opt for a dramatic black or pastel green, the change of hue will give the illusion of a completely new kitchen upgrade –without the big spend,” says Nash.
If you want even more of a change, she says you can also replace doors and drawer fronts with new materials and finishes.”

Introduce floating shelves
If you have blank wall space, you don’t necessarily need to buy large pieces of furniture, such as dressers and cupboards, to fill it.
Instead, incorporating floating shelving into the space is an affordable way to not only add more storage to your kitchen, but also add a level of style and airiness to the space, says Nash.
“Providing the perfect opportunity to showcase personal flair and character in your kitchen – displaying pretty glassware, or your favourite mugs and cookbooks, can keep your kitchen feeling cosy.”
She says it’s worth putting some thought into what you will have on display, as these will contribute to the overall look and feel of your space. For example, avoid placing items like appliances or mismatched crockery on display, as this can make your kitchen feel cluttered.
Update your splashback
“Practicalities aside, splashbacks play a crucial role as a focal point in your kitchen design,” says Nash. “Simply updating them, therefore, is an easy way to add a splash of on-trend colour and transform the feel of the room.”
If the rest of your kitchen is fairly neutral, she suggests picking a patterned tile to add some flair. “As well as colour, you can introduce an additional finish or layer into your kitchen with your splashback, such as textured or hexagonal tiles.”
Add under-cabinet lighting
Aside from its practical purposes, lighting in a kitchen is a key design feature that can really determine the overall feeling and mood of the space, notes Nash.
“But you don’t need to invest in extravagant lighting fixtures, or rewire your electricals to achieve your desired finish,” she adds.

From overhead spotlights running across kitchen worktops and dangling over an island, to rattan lamps, safely placed candles and under or in-cabinet LED lighting, Nash says there are lots of small and affordable lighting tricks that can go a long way in creating a warm and ambient atmosphere.
“The key is to dot them around the space to create dark and light zones, that draw you in and illuminate the surrounding features.”
Update hardware
Trade old or outdated hardware in for metallic finishes, such as brass and brushed gold, to give your kitchen a sleek and modern refresh, suggests Nash.
She says small changes and additions like this can go a long way in making your kitchen look and feel more luxurious, without spending over the odds.
“Whatever finish or material you opt for, ensure you keep it coherent throughout the kitchen – with all knobs and handles matching in material and shape,” advises Nash. “This will tie the whole space together with a sleek and contemporary aesthetic.”
Burbidge agrees: “Finishing touches, such as the hardware for your cabinetry, have a significant impact on the look and feel of your kitchen. If you are on a limited budget, changing the handles is a cost-effective way to refresh your kitchen.”
Flooring
Another inexpensive way to refresh your kitchen is through your flooring…
“Hard flooring styles, such as vinyl and laminate, remain popular choices due to their durability and costeffectiveness,” says Sam Way, hard flooring buyer at Carpetright. “Not only are these solutions highly durable, they can also help to transform a space and make a design statement in the kitchen, without a large investment.”
Additionally, he says these styles are particularly easy to maintain, offering a visible level of cleanliness and satisfaction with a light sweep and mop.

The best beaches for sun-soaking and swims in the UK and Ireland
Swap pricey European breaks for a seaside escape closer to home, says Sarah Marshall.
It may not measure up to the Amalfi Coast or the French Riviera when it comes to water temperature and hours of sunshine, but the coastlines around the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands can be just as captivating.
With good weather on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to discover and appreciate the beaches on our doorstep. Here are some of the top sandy spots for lazing, bathing and strolling.

JULY 23 46
SAYE BEACH, ALDERNEY
Who: Nature lovers.
Why: One of the lesser-known Channel Islands, Alderney is still far enough from the beaten track to have crowd-free stretches of sand. A gleaming white horseshoe bay, Saye – on the northeast coast of the island – is one of the most attractive spots. Walk through a campsite and over sand dunes to access the area, where oyster catchers and the occasional grey seal can be found frolicking in the surf.
What to do: Measuring just 2.4 by 5km in size, the island is easy to explore. Hike through nature reserves, take a boat trip to see puffin colonies on neighbouring Burhou, or ride the Channel Islands’ only railway to the Mannez Lighthouse. Visit between August 7-12 to see circus performers and parades at the annual Alderney Week carnival.
Where to stay: The Blonde Hedgehog (blondehedgehog. com) is a collection of 18th century buildings transformed into a boutique Georgian retreat. From £160 per night with breakfast. Book through F&P Travel (fandptravel. com; 01306 264 006).
BREAM COVE, CORNWALL
Who: Families.
Why: The West Country has stacks of sensational swimming and sunbathing spots – but finding an empty space to throw your towel down becomes a challenge during busy summer months. Accessed via a short woodland walk near Mawnan Smith village, this southeast-facing, secluded sand and shingle cove is one of the few remaining secret hideaways – a refreshing relief from the busy Falmouth town beaches. The calm waters are great for snorkelling and paddleboarding, while it’s also one of the few places in the area where dogs are allowed in the summer.
UK & IRELAND | TRAVEL
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 47
What to do: Hire a paddleboard from Little Wolf Adventures (2.5-hour private tours from £60 per adult and £30 per child under 14, including a picnic stop; littlewolfadventures.com). Afterwards, head for a coffee at the Bream Box (horse box cafe at the end of Hotel Meudon) or walk along the South West Coast Path towards Rosemullion Head and the Helford River, an important area of marine conservation.
Where to stay: Set within sprawling sub-tropical gardens, Hotel Meudon has a superb terrace for enjoying afternoon tea or sunset cocktails. Rooms from £129 per night (two sharing), including breakfast. Visit meudon.co.uk.
LLANDUDNO BAY, WALES
Who: Children and fantasy fans.
Why: Masters of great architecture, the Victorians were also a dab hand at constructing promenades. One of the UK’s most impressive coastal walkways can be found in North Wales at Llandudno Bay. Originally 74m long when it opened in 1858, it was later extended and now stands at 700m. Funfair rides, a Ferris wheel and cafes can be found along the front. Or step down to the water for a walk along the pebbly beach.
What to do: Alice Liddell, Lewis Carroll’s real-life inspiration for Alice In Wonderland, spent many summer holidays on Llandudno’s West Shore. Pick up a map from the tourist information office to discover statues and sites connected to the classic tale. Along the Grade II listed promenade, Professor Codman’s Punch and Judy also still takes place. Performed for more than 160 years, it’s one of the longest running shows in the country.
Where to stay: Lewis Carroll supposedly penned part of his famous story at the seafront St George’s Hotel. Napoleon and Sir Winston Churchill are two of the famous faces who have stayed in the 81-room property. From £128 per night (two sharing), including breakfast through Booking.com.

BALLYGALLY BEACH, NORTHERN IRELAND
Who: History buffs and Wim Hof wannabes.
Why: Stretching for 300km, this beach has won awards for its cleanliness, choice of facilities and the quality of its water for bathing. In the distance, Scotland and the Mull of Kintyre are visible on a clear day.
What to do: Aside from swimming and strolling along the seaweed and boulder-strewn sands, there are many attractions in the area. An hour’s drive north, the Giant’s Causeway’s 40,000 interlocking basalt columns have inspired legends of giants straddling the sea. Head inland to The Glens, an area of outstanding natural beauty, or take a walk around Carnfunnock Country Park located between Drains Bay and Ballygally.
Where to stay: Built in 1625, Ballygally Castle overlooks the beach and is one of the largest hotels on the Causeway Coastal Route. A new Sea Dips & Hot Sips overnight package provides guests with everything they need for a bracing swim in the North Channel. From €260/£224 for two people, including breakfast, hire of dry robe, slippers, hot water bottle and thermos flask. Visit ballygallycastlehotel.com.

Remoulding the Past, Reshaping the Future, Rebuilding the Environment!
As we bask in the glorious weather we have been experiencing it can sometimes highlight parts of our garden that we would like to improve. During the warmer weather outdoor areas can act as an extension of our living space, so a little investment in quality furniture, or a new fence or decking can ensure you have an idyllic area to kick back and relax in.
At Reformed Plastics we specialise in creating attractive and hard-wearing outdoor furniture, decking, fencing and gate solutions, planters (plus more), all made from 100% recycled HDPE plastic waste, previously destined for UK landfill or the ocean!
Our products are a great investment because they are much more durable and lower maintenance than their wooden counterparts, so will last over 50 years and save any future expense. Being made from recycled plastic the furniture doesn’t absorb moisture like wood does, therefore it doesn’t rot and will last infinitely longer.
Not only will it give your garden the uplift it might need for the summer but will help you be able to enjoy it all year-round. The important factor to consider is whether your surfaces are safe to use in the everchanging weather conditions we face. Our decking is anti-slip, so you can feel safe walking around whatever the weather, plus furniture can be simply wiped down so you can still enjoy a cup of tea in your gardens even after a rain shower!

One of the main benefits of investing in recycled plastic furniture for a business is how easy it is to clean and maintain. It can be regularly hosed or wiped down with disinfectant after each use, giving you and your customers peace of mind. It is also a great investment because unlike wooden furniture, it will not rot, split or splinter, so once purchased it will last forever saving you from the need to replace it a few years down the line.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why are recycled plastic products different?
Plastic lumber is the perfect alternative to anything that has ever needed maintaining.
Plastic lumber can be cut with a regular saw, drilled or screwed into and routed as easily as wood.
Will not rot, split or splinter
• Will not need painting or staining
• Resistant to all weather and salt water
• Resistant to chemicals and vandalism
• Resistant to insects and bacteria

WOOD VS PLASTIC
OUTDOOR LIVING | REFORMED PLASTICS
“Not only was delivery prompt and easy, the Reformed Plastics driver was incredibly helpful. The product is great – 9 years on and it still looks brand new. Better yet, it’s recycled!”
WOOD PLASTIC Stain-resistant NO splinters NO warping NO splitting NO rotting NO need for treating NO need for sanding Child friendly Anti-slip decking NO maintenance Average maintenance cost per year £150 £0 JULY 23 62
How strong is it?
It is extremely solid and strong being able to withstand stress levels of well over 10x that of traditional timber. It is heavy, durable, virtually indestructible and will not need to be replaced. In short, it is worry free!
Does it need to be cleaned?
Our products only need to be cleaned after a spillage. The collection of airborne dirt is inevitable and we would recommend a simple spray-down with a hose or brush over every so often to ensure that your purchase is kept in the best condition.
Is there a colour choice?
Our standard colours are black or brown, however we do produce a range of products in a variety of bright colours including purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, grey and beige! This removes the need for painting and staining. So whatever colour is required... just ask!

The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’: What you need to know about helping your child financially
Are you considering offering your child financial assistance to help them get onto the property ladder? Kathryn Loveland-Blockley at Dutton Gregory Solicitors, reveals how you can provide the financial support your children may need and if it is a good idea.
What are we talking about when we refer to the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’?
We’re referring to the receiving of money from parents or a family member. Increasingly young people, particularly first-time buyers, are turning to loved ones and using family loans when buying a home or putting down a deposit. This can help lower monthly repayments and interest rates. Why are more people turning to family members for financial support?
Rises in house prices and living costs are making it harder for young people to save for their first home. The ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ has never been busier, with a 2021 report by Legal & General estimating more than half of under-35s receive a gift or loan from their parents, around 5½ million parents help younger family members and the amount reaches £9.8 billion. How can you provide financial assistance to a family member?
There are several ways you help a loved one financially. You can gift them the money, loan it to them or set up a joint investment. It’s best to seek professional advice to help decide which is the best option for you.
Gifting the money is the simplest choice, but can come with the greatest risk, as you have no say in how the money is used. If you decide to loan them the money, a solicitor such as myself can help you establish conditions to protect your assets, and offer tax-planning advice. You can also agree on how they will repay the personal loan they borrow.
With expert guidance, a joint investment is easy to set up and is a great way for you to help your child buy a home and invest in your family’s future. If the property is sold, you could use the return to help boost your pension savings.
You may also decide to set up a Trust that uses money from your estate, which may have tax planning advantages.
What will I need to consider before agreeing to provide any money?
First, decide how much money you want to pay them. This will depend on what you can afford, why the money is needed and possibly how many other children you have. I always recommend that you should treat each child fairly.
KATHRYN LOVELAND-BLOCKLEY Associate Executive
If your child is in a relationship, contemplate asking them to sign a Cohabitation or Prenuptial Agreement before they receive the money. This can help ensure it will be spent wisely and is protected in the event of a divorce or separation. You should seek help with tax planning and consider updating your Will to reflect the changes to your assets.
It’s also best to speak with your intended lender beforehand, as some banks may not be comfortable approving a mortgage loan that’s been heavily funded by other family members.
Why seek help from a solicitor?
I can provide bespoke legal advice, explain your options, make you aware of any relevant tax considerations and put protections in place, so you can provide the financial support that your child needs.
In our first meeting, we’ll discuss your situation and outline the next steps to make this process simple and stress-free, helping you to make the best decision for your family.

Jewellery is actually one of the most sustainable industries as all elements of jewellery can be recycled, reused or re purposed. All branches offer jewellery part exchanges and upgrades, and advise customers who want to trade in unwanted jewellery for something they would prefer to wear, or who have family pieces re made or reset for the next generation to love. The workshops and design teams work closely together to produce bespoke items, this can be from inception to completion, or if the customer has something particular in mind.
Additional jewellery services also include insurance and probate valuations and purchasing unwanted broken or unused jewellery for cash or part exchange.

BEST FOR ROSES
MOTTISFONT, NEAR ROMSEY (JUNE TO EARLY JULY)
The walled garden at Mottisfont is filled with fragrance and colour from thousands of roses in June. It’s home to the National Collection of pre-1900 old-fashioned roses. These roses flower just once a year, and their June season is an extraordinary sight.
There are several hundred varieties, including Rosa ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison’ – a sumptuous pale pink bourbon rose inspired by the Empress Josephine’s garden. Ancient varieties include Rosa ‘Gallica Officinalis’, a light crimson, scented shrub brought to England from Persia by the Crusaders.
Borders are packed with rambling roses, elegant climbers cover the high brick walls, and there are lush rose arbours to walk beneath too. Don’t forget to try local ice cream maker Jude’s rose-flavoured ice cream whilst you’re there.
Also look out for…
In July purple hedges of lavender line the garden paths, releasing a heady scent as you brush past. In the kitchen garden newly-planted sweet peas entwine around the pergolas, displaying fragrant pink, purple and white blooms from June to September. This is a great place to sit and relax, taking in beautiful beds of leafy salads and veg, herbs and flowers.

HINTON AMPNER, NR ALRESFORD (JUNE & JULY)
This horticultural delight is heaving with flowers in summer, and one of its stars is the collection of repeat flowering roses, renowned for their intense scent. You’ll find them throughout the gardens – climbing the walls of the kitchen garden (and the house), lining the path to the ornamental pond, and en-masse in huge rose borders just beyond the terrace. Here you’ll find apricot Ghislaine de Feligonde, and the arching branches of soft pink, richly fragrant Great Maiden’s Blush.
Also look out for…
Attractive displays of leafy summer produce and pretty companion planting in the walled kitchen garden. Behind this lies the cut flower border, brimming with assorted blooms, from delphiniums, astrantia and peonies, to roses, sweet peas and alliums.
Rose Celebration, 20 May to 10 July
A new rose guide will take you to Hinton’s rose hot spots this summer. Pick up a copy to enjoy a rose-themed trail, keeping an eye out for the garden’s wooden rose markers.

BEST FOR DAHLIAS
THE VYNE, NEAR BASINGSTOKE (LATE JULY TO OCTOBER)
Another National Trust garden that’s keeping floral traditions alive is The Vyne, where, in the 19th century, head gardener Mr Broomfield grew award-winning blooms. In late summer, you’ll be treated to a spectacular sight in the walled garden. The 30m border is packed with dahlias in incredible colourways and styles. Look out for red and yellow dahlia ‘Pooh’, spiky magenta ‘Nuit d’Ete’, and coral pink dahlia ‘Bacardi’. If you time it right you’ll find freshly cut dahlias to take home, for a small donation.
Also look out for…
Summerhouse borders, sustainably planted with perennials, are filled with vibrant colour, from frothy pink achillea and purple-blue spires of penstemon, to bright pink echinacea, fragrant mauve phlox and the soft yellow daisy heads of leucanthemum. All chosen to appeal to pollinators.

BEST FOR WILDFLOWERS
UPPARK, NEAR PETERSFIELD (JUNE & JULY)
Uppark’s meadow couldn’t be more different to the rest of these landscaped gardens. Grazed by sheep in the spring, and not mown until the end of summer, it is a mass of wildflowers and delicate waving grasses by early summer – chequered snakeshead fritillaries, purple pyramidal orchids and sunny yellow rattle. Take in the sight on Uppark’s short South Meadow Walk or find a peaceful spot in the long grass to watch the butterflies – keep an eye out for flittering meadow browns and small coppers.
Also look out for….
Uppark’s mini scented garden displays fragrant lilies, sweet peas, phlox and heliotrope, known as ‘cherry pie’ because of its delicious scent. In August, a seed mix called ‘medieval tapestry’ develops into a beautiful patchwork of wildflowers in purple, blue and orange.
Summer Lates: Outdoor theatre
‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Dot Productions. In this production, full of fun and laughter, you’ll join Alice as she explores Wonderland and meets fantastical characters, from the White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat, to the Mad Hatter and the dreaded Queen of Hearts. 8 & 9 August, 2-3.30pm, all tickets £11 (single) or £40 (up to 4 people inc one adult), book at https://www. nationaltrust.org.uk/uppark.
THE VYNE, NEAR BASINGSTOKE (JULY)
In July, the appearance of The Vyne’s walled garden changes dramatically, thanks to thousands of wildflowers that pop up. It’s the most amazing sight – a sea of red, white, blue and orange flowers swaying in the breeze. These colours were chosen because they’re particularly attractive to pollinating insects. There are over 50 different varieties here, including poppies and marigolds, rose campion and larkspur. The patchwork display makes a great backdrop for family selfies too.

SANDHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, NEAR NEWBURY (JUNE & JULY)
At the front of this unique chapel, set in the sleepy village of Burghclere, lies a little apple orchard in a meadow setting. Here you’ll find a rich assortment of flowering wildlife - yellow rattle, knapweed, poppies, oxeye daisies and orchids to name a few. It’s a lovely place to picnic – or a bench or on the ground, in the shade of a tree or out in the sun. There’s fragrant Hidcote lavender to enjoy too, fronting the almshouses in high summer, and providing nectar for bees, butterflies and moths.
Also look out for….
The cottage garden-style Garden of Reflection sits nestled behind the chapel – a tranquil place with simple oak benches and soft but vibrant planting.
Foxgloves, ladies’ mantle, alliums, scabious and gerberas bring colour to the raised beds, with sweet peas providing a traditional backdrop.

A ffordable, undiscovered & wonderfully rustic
Claire Spreadbury spends a weekend in Umbria and discovers a rural wonderland she doesn’t want to leave.
I’m stood in the middle of a rustic, old, Italian kitchen, feeling like a total failure. Mara – a nonna who is teaching me how to cook Italian food – is shaking her head and wafting my disc of freshly-made pasta at me, tutting and muttering in her native language. She doesn’t speak a word of English, but Beatrice, who is translating for me, reveals I’ve used too much flour. My pasta is too hard and no longer any use for ravioli – it is only good enough for tagliatelle. The shame is real.

OCTOBER 22 ? JULY 23 94
Thankfully, slurping some delicious red wine and licking the spoon from the-best-tiramisu-I-have-ever-tasted-inmy-life soon takes the edge off.
Mara and her co-chefs, Edoardo and Emma, arrive in our three-bedroom cottage in Borgo Bastia Creti, a small, 14th century resort in Umbria – right in the middle of Italy and close to the Tuscan border.
I listen to the crackle of logs sparking in the ginormous fireplace, as Italian chatter gathers speed and volume in the kitchen. Together, we make ricotta and spinach ravioli in a sage, butter and olive oil sauce, tagliatelle in a buttery tomato sauce (“the butter makes it better,” Emma says), and proper Italian tiramisu, made with six simple ingredients, no cream, and is all about the eggs and lots of whisking – an ingredient often missed out of recipes entirely at home.
After a couple of hours of hard work (making pasta is much more difficult than I thought it would be), we sit down to our feast, supplemented with wine and an additional starter of antipasto, because two courses of pasta and a large, rich dessert apparently isn’t enough. Well, we are in Italy.
Organising activities and things to do on site is something they specialise in at this family-run hamlet. Now owned by 30-something twins, Roberto and Veruschka Wirth, who also own Rome’s five star luxury hotel, Hassler Roma, this used to be the home of their grandma. If pasta making isn’t your thing (€75/£65pp), they can organise dinners (€45/£40pp), yoga €40/£35pp), massage (€90/£78pp), learning Italian (€50/£43pp per hour), wine tasting €50/£43pp), truffle hunting (from €50/£43pp) – pretty much anything you fancy. There are tennis courts, a pool, and boule available, too.
ITALY | TRAVEL
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK ? 95
The resort has a total of 13 bedrooms, so it never feels too busy. Shortly after our visit, the whole hotel is being hired by couples from Oslo, who have booked dinner and wine tasting in the 12th century chapel, complete with a traditional accordion player.
A hour’s drive from the airport, past lush vineyards, pretty shuttered stone buildings and undulating green hills, fields come to life filled with thousands of wild red poppies. This part of Italy feels so authentic – rustic, real and undiscovered, although it’s certainly starting to garner interest.
According to Roberto, Antognolla has one of the most beautiful golf courses in Italy and is just over half an hour away. Costello is a 15-minute drive, known for its historic landmarks and beautiful churches, and swanky hotel brand Six Senses are opening up nearby, too.
Puffs of white cloud hang low in the Umbrian hills as we head into another nearby village, Montone. A 30-minute drive away, it’s a bit of a hidden gem. Only 1,500 people live here, yet it’s a celebrity favourite. Stanley Tucci was given the keys of the city at last year’s film festival, which takes place here every year. And after eating lunch at L’Antica Osteria di Montone, the Australian owner regales tales about Cameron Diaz’s visit last year, as well as Dan Levy and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Rumour has it, Gwyneth Paltrow stays on the Reschio estate, about 30 minutes away, too.

“Italy is full of places that are still undiscovered,” says Roberto, “and people are looking for quieter, more authentic places now.”
Hilly, winding lanes lead us down past sand and limestone buildings, ivy clad walls and curved, weathered terracotta roofs. Pink and red geraniums hang from window boxes and wisteria weaves its way around pretty pergolas. The churches in Montone are insanely beautiful, as is the food.
We tuck into a local speciality of brasato di chianina (braised beef, €17/£15) and a salted caramel semifredo (€6/£5), and there are lots of other picture-postcard eateries here, too. La Locanda del Capitano doesn’t have a Michelin star, but it is included in the guide with a Bib Gourmand recognition. And there are lots of varieties of truffle here – over 40, in fact. The best is apparently white truffle, served in local dishes, and in season from September to December, so autumn is a great time for foodies to visit.
Back at the Borgi, white candles wobble in the silver candelabra as we sit chatting with the expressive Italian staff. The food here is ‘mama style’ – scrambled eggs at breakfast, chickpea and pasta stew at dinner and grilled vegetable salads at lunch. Fine dining it is not, but comforting, fresh and Italian it most certainly is. “We are simple, but authentic,” says site manager, Sonia.
My room is spacious, filled with a huge bed, old wooden furniture and handmade floor tiles, containing swirls from the trowels which made them, plus the odd finger smudge and paw print, laid with a couple of mismatching rugs.
Ancient double wooden doors with giant iron hinges lead into my en-suite where my enormous wardrobe sits looking over double basins and a ceramic bath sunk into a tiled surround, with hand-painted hexagonal tiles depicting fish, trees, birds and people. It’s not remotely fancy, but it’s wonderful.
ITALY | TRAVEL
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 7 97
The lounge area of our cottage continues the theme, with chunky furniture placed around a couple of understated red sofas. Ornate detailing sings from every corner – in the beautiful wooden arms of the chairs that flank the fireplace, in the painted shapes of the lamp bases – each one chipped and worn, and the gold painted plaque above the stone mantlepiece. All the ceilings are beamed wooden slats and in the kitchen sits an enormous wooden table seating up to 12 people. Arched windows look out on to the Umbrian hills like paintings, and worktops and walls are adorned with battered monochrome tiles.
The views here are phenomenal, and the gardens are filled with cypress trees, pomegranates and aromatic bushes. From the panoramic pool, I can see tiny droplets of morning dew on the grass. The light is reflecting in the rippling water and the only sounds I can hear are a chattering magpie, a determined cuckoo, chirping birdsong and the nearby cattle lowing. It feels remarkably peaceful, as I watch the mist rise from the surface, my body shocked and shivering from the early morning temperature.
It’s unseasonably cold and rainy in Italy this May, but no matter. Instead of lounging on a sun bed and soaking up some rays, I’m getting my vitamin D alongside some cold water therapy at the pool today, and I can’t think of anywhere more beautiful to do it. Olive trees stoop over to watch my springtime madness, all old, gnarly and knowing, their leaves shimmying in the morning breeze.
Afterwards, the local church bells chime and it’s time to head home. I attempt to focus my mind on the elegantly tall pines and mountainous hills around me, but the leftover tiramisu is calling my name from the fridge. Maybe there’s time for one last feast before I go.
How to plan your trip

LETTINGS
We
have the opposite happening on the rental side.
Over the last few years, we have seen landlords being hit with the mortgage interest relief being taken away from them and moving to the Airbnb side of lettings, where it is a tax allowable expense. This has reduced the stock available for long term renters. We now have a double whammy of the interest rates having increased for the 13th month in a row, which is resulting in landlords either exiting the market or increasing the rents. Either way, with less stock for the rental market, we are seeing rents climbing to unprecedented levels and will continue whilst stocks remain low.
At Move On, we are helping landlords sell their tenanted properties to investors. If you would like an informal chat on your options, please Email sharon@ moveon.biz or ring me 01202711169.

Shrek The Musical
Q&A with Joanne Clifton (Princess Fiona), by Jo Caird.
Based on the Oscar winning DreamWorks film, the Broadway and West End smash hit Shrek the Musical is a fun filled and hilarious musical comedy with a cast of vibrant characters and a ‘shrektackular’ score, coming to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from the 20th - 25th February 2024.
Featuring fabulous songs including the smash hit I’m a Believer. Shrek the Musical is a ‘musical extravaganza for big kids and little kids alike’. Come join the adventure as Shrek and Donkey endeavour to complete their quest, finding unexpected friendships and surprising romance along the way.
Strictly Come Dancing and leading lady
Joanne Clifton (Strictly Come Dancing, The Addams Family) will be part of the cast as the beloved Princess Fiona, and gives us her insights into taking on this role.
Were you a fan of the original Shrek movie?
I just loved it! And then I went to see the musical on one of the previous tours and loved that.
What was the audition like?
I wanted it so much that I went into the audition and I didn’t let anybody speak! There was the director who I already had worked with before, Nick Winston, there was the casting director, the musical director and the producer. Now I hadn’t met these other people but I didn’t let them speak! I sat at the table and said, ‘Right, this is why I need this job: 1) Sutton Foster played Princess Fiona on Broadway and she’s my idol; 2) I have auditioned for it before and didn’t get it and I’m a very competitive
person; and 3) if ever there was a princess in any film or fable, the one I would relate to most is Princess Fiona’. I said, ‘Without sounding too full of myself, I am a world champion ballroom dancer, meaning long dresses with feathers, looking all elegant like a princess. But here’s the thing: I’m from Grimsby, I find trumping really funny. This is why I relate to Princess Fiona.’
Where were you when you found out you’d got the part?
I have my own segment on BBC Two, It Takes Two, which is a spin-off of Strictly. I was there and I was getting my makeup done and the email came through, and I was like, ‘Wow!’ And then I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone because it was all under wraps.
How have you researched the role of Princess Fiona?
I’ve watched the film and have been listening to Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona on the soundtrack and watching clips of different actors doing the role on stage. But I’m stopping doing that now so I’m able to create my own take on it.
How are you feeling about being transformed into an ogre in the show?
I had my fitting for Fiona’s ogre body and hands and I’ve had to cut my nails short because my long ones won’t work for the quick change into my ogre suit.
People who know you from Strictly may not realise that you’re also an accomplished musical theatre actor –how do the two disciplines compare?
I have a really strong work ethic from my time in ballroom dancing. I absolutely hate having a night off sick – I have to be on death’s door to go off sick.
What I love about the musical theatre world, which is different from my dancing world, is that nobody is bigger than the show. Coming away from the stress and the pressure of competing in the ballroom world is so refreshing for me. It’s teamwork in a musical: we’ve all got our separate roles and of course we want the lead ones, but even if you’re not a lead, you’re just as important because the show is the main goal. And it just makes me happy! I love that we have to go on and do the show to an audience of however many people and if anything goes wrong, we have to carry on. I love the adrenaline of that.
It is a perfect night out for the young, and the young at heart, the award-winning Shrek the Musical is guaranteed fun for all ages and will have you dancing and laughing all the way home.

Colour me creative
Decorating is not a look, it’s a point of view…
Look back at the avocado green of the ‘70s and you can see that colour trends come and go just like fashion – and can have a serious impact on home décor! The colours we choose to paint our walls are just as important as the surrounding furniture. Thanks to the stream of stunning interiors on social media and in glossy magazines there’s no shortage of inspiration. One item within your home can be the deciding factor of a decorating scheme; whether it be a cushion, a piece of artwork or a floor tile, it can give you a starting point for your décor.
Colour can visually alter the proportions of a room and, costly extensions and architects aside, it can also be used to alter the shape of a room. When planning your colour scheme remember that a darker wall colour will bring the wall towards you, whereas a lighter colour creates the illusion that it’s further away. You can also prevent narrow hallways from appearing ‘tunnellike’ by painting the end wall a darker shade than the side wall. The same principle works within a rectangular room that you’d like to make appear more square.
A few tips from Partners in Design can help make the decision making easier! A marvellous way to create light and space is to use the lightest colour on the largest surface area, such as the walls, and a darker tone on woodwork. Or there is great historic precedent for using one colour on both walls and woodwork and it is also popular in contemporary settings as it creates a strong, clean look. It generates a sense of calm in a room, as well as exaggerating it’s size, as there are no contrasts to draw the eye. Low
ceiling? Using the same colour on the walls and ceiling will increase the illusion of height as the eye is drawn away from where the wall stops and the ceiling starts.
Neutrals are the perfect backdrop for decorating a room. Many people feel comfortable when surrounded by carefully balanced colours that create an understated environment, they don’t compete with each other thus making it easier on the eye. Choosing your perfect group of neutrals can really reflect you, your personality and your style and create a calm and tranquil atmosphere.
The team at Partners in Design work hand in hand with our clients offering colour consultations that bring out the very best of your home. We offer fresh perspectives and exciting interior design. Stockists of The Little Greene paint company, an ecofriendly, family-run business cataloguing 300 years of paint and wallpaper, we are certain we can create the perfect colour scheme to make your house a home.
There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to decorating. We all tend to gravitate towards different styles but there are a few pointers to bear in mind which will help: (1) the architectural elements of the room; (2) the light; and (3) your style.

How to make your home summer ready
These expert styling tips and summery homewares paint a pretty picture, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
With sunshine and blue skies around, there couldn’t be a better time to refresh your interiors.
And Alysha Alli, who heads up the interior design team for Redrow, recommends “balancing the warm outside with fresh décor inside”.
From tones and textures to ornaments and aesthetics, she says finding a style that complements your unique personality is essential to perfecting your interiors this summer.
“Our homes have an undeniable impact on our wellbeing, so it’s important interior design incorporates elements of nature during the summer to help boost our energy,” suggests Alli.

Here, she shares some key elements to help you get the right vibe…
Go luxe-boho
Layer patterned and textured throws with tassels and washed-out prints in natural fabrics like linen and 100% natural cottons, says Alli.
“Aesthetics that embrace imperfections are entirely on trend, so observe your space and see where you can incorporate sustainable pieces such as hand-crafted ceramics too, then fill these with tall pampas and tactile bunny tail grasses for a gentle texture and aesthetic.”
Make indoor plants a centrepiece
Plants can complement natural materials such as real woods, ceramics and natural stones, Alli highlights.
“Go for a cluster of different heights – ensuring the tallest is at the back of an arrangement, placed directly in the corner of your room on the opposing side of entry.
“This will make your space appear more spacious and airier, perfect for cooling down the temperature.”
She says cacti also look perfect catching the light on a bright en suite or main bathroom windowsill. If this space doesn’t get a lot of natural light, try aloe vera which thrives in humid conditions.

Bring the outdoors in Alli says incorporating feature wallpapers in matcha colours and forest hues to more subdued olive greens will introduce a flow of serenity across your interiors.
“Tones of green are also known to boost positivity and promote calmness throughout the home,” she adds. Depending on your budget, she suggests placing a khaki rug under a rich walnut coffee table for a warm aesthetic.
“Exploring these deep earth tones and mixing with botanical greens really brings the beauty of nature into your space.”
Switch to vivacious colours
Think peachy tones and luminous apricot paint finishes – refreshing hues which Alli says awake the senses.
“While it may not be the obvious choice for everyone, when paired with the right grounding pieces of furniture such as a bouclé or rattan accent armchair, it makes your interior feel contemporary and alive.”
Take this a step further by complementing your design with an irregularly shaped mirror. “Balancing the straight lines of contemporary furniture with the rounded nature of accent pieces will draw attention to their detailed design and create contrast,” adds Alli.

Add pops of colour around the home
When creating more social and entertaining spaces, bursts of colour help bring rooms to life.
With blooms flourishing in warmer weather, think about adding fresh flowers into an earthy rotund vase, suggests Alli.
When arranging flowers, she likes to create a greenery base using foliage such as ivy, moss, eucalyptus or fern, then adds focal flowers and filler flowers into the gaps –aiming for a dome shape.
Another way to boost your wellbeing – and colour code – is with funky photograph frames mounted with summer holiday snaps.
If you’re looking to do something larger and more impressive, Alli suggests creating a cosy reading nook; or transforming your office space with Seventiesinspired furniture shaping.

Plant fragrant shrubs, perennials and annuals near your garden seating area, says Hannah Stephenson.
Now that many of us have given our barbecues an airing and are enjoying the longer evenings, it’s wonderful to take in the variety of scents which pervade in the garden when the sun goes down.
Many plants actually increase their perfume production at night to attract moths to pollinate them.
Choose your plants carefully, and you can have a wonderfully scented garden for much of the summer.
There are many shrubs – mock orange (Philadelphus), shrub roses and lavender – which are all easy to obtain, along with fragrant annuals, which make great additions to patio pots and raised beds.

of the best scented plants to enhance your summer evenings

JULY 23 124
PA Photo
Even if you only grow some traditional sweet peas to cut and place in a vase on your outside table, guests will be able to enjoy a whiff of their heady scent.
Here are some of the best fragrant plants for enjoying as the sun sets…
NIGHT-SCENTED STOCKS (MATTHIOLA)
These pretty, old-fashioned annuals reach their fragrant peak at twilight, where they become moth magnets. Reaching up to 60cm in height, they produce small, fourpetalled flowers in shades of white, lilac or pink and are ideal at the front of an informal scheme or added to container displays. They like full sun in a sheltered position and moist, well-drained soil.
EVENING PRIMROSE (OENOTHERA)
If you’re a wildflower fan, these fragrant bowl-shaped yellow flowering beauties are excellent for pollinators, and also produce their optimum scent in the evening.
Depending on the variety you choose, they can grow to up to 1m, ideal for the middle of a border, or to just 30cm, better for a container. Grow them in full sun or semi-shade. They don’t require much attention apart from watering during prolonged dry periods, and should flower from June to September

NICOTIANA (TOBACCO PLANT)
Hanging their flowers sleepily during the day, especially in really bright sunlight, the old-fashioned varieties of these annuals come to life in the evening when their blooms open to emit a sweet scent – so make sure you place them in containers near where you are sitting.
Some, such as Nicotiana langsdorffii, will grow to 1.5m so may be better in the border or secured to a garden trellis, while others, such as the beautiful ‘Lime Green’, grow to around 60cm and are ideal for a pot. If you want flowers which open up during the day, go for the newer strains, but the old-fashioned ones will give you more perfume.
MOCK ORANGE (PHILADELPHUS)
This is among the most fragrant of flowering shrubs, ideally given plenty of space to spread out, where its white blooms can emit their delicious scent reminiscent of orange blossom – which will pervade the whole garden on balmy summer evenings.
Single-flowered varieties are great for bees and butterflies and you can also get types which are suitable for large containers, such as ‘Manteau d’Hermine’, ideally placed near a window or door on the patio. They are easy to grow, withstanding poor soil and wind, but generally not shade.
OUTDOOR LIVING | ADVICE SCENT

JULY 23 126
LEFT Philadelphus (mock orange) | PA Photo
LILIES
These are guaranteed to give you fragrance from mid-summer onwards, whether you want a dazzling splash of colour on your patio with showstopping varieties like the pink oriental ‘Stargazer’, which likes full sun and will need staking. Or more subtle hues which pack a fragrant punch, such as Lilium longiflorum, with its long, white, trumpershaped flowers.
This one is best grown in large pots (it grows to 1m) as it is not totally hardy. Or try Lilium regale, a trumpet lily growing to 1m, which lights up a summer border.
Where to place them
Perfume is most apparent in calm conditions, as wind will carry the scent away in the air, so it’s best to plant fragrant climbers in a sheltered spot or on a partially enclosed patio.
Consider combinations
If you want fragrant perennials in your borders, go for combinations of those with scented flowers and those with fragrant foliage to complement each other.
Some scented plants are not spectacular but will bring out the best in a border when planted with colourful non-perfumed plants. Try growing lemon-scented verbena and pineapple sage (Salvia elegans, whose foliage releases a pineapple-like scent when you brush past it) in the border amid
unscented blooms, and you will have the best of both worlds.
Locate leafy scents
Plants with scented foliage include scented leaved pelargoniums, Achillea filipendulina, catmint (nepeta), Monarda didyma and the lemon balm Melissa officinalis `All Gold’, while those with perfumed flowers include Iris unguicularis, Phlox paniculata, Hosta `Honeybells’ and many varieties of dianthus.
Of course, plants with heavier scents may dominate, so keep richly fragrant roses, lilies, lavender and other strongly aromatic plants separate from those with more subtle perfumes.

MOTORING NEWS
Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
With the imminent demise of Ford’s Fiesta the choice of small hatchbacks continues to diminish in favour of an SUV style. Thankfully there are still manufacturers with tempting offers in the sector and Hyundai is one of them. The diminutive i10 might conceivably be a little small for some, but the larger i20 slots in nicely size-wise for those wanting maximum space in compact form.
A smart looking car, if comments on my test model are anything to judge, the i20 range starts at £19,725 and encompasses the entry level through to the luxury and sporty and finally the very sporting i20N. My Ultimate model sits at the top of the normal tree with a £24,475 price tag and 7-speed automatic transmission.
Standard fare across the line-up is very good with alloy wheels, air conditioning, high beam assist, powered and heated door mirrors, cruise control, rear parking
sensors and camera, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. My Ultimate added climate control, heated seats, privacy glass, rain sensing wipers, wireless charging, navigation, keyless entry and start, power fold door mirrors and a Bose sound system.
The range uses a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol developing 100PS, or 120PS for the N-Line version. The i20N goes much further with a 1.6-litre, 206PS power plant. Manual cars have 6-speeds and automatics a 7-speed double clutch type of automatic. It’s a very effective power delivery aided by a 48v battery to make a mild hybrid that benefits emissions, power and economy.
It’s a practical car too with even the lead-in version having a 60/40 split folding rear seat and good rear legroom when the rear seats are in position. Certainly not a performance model though when 62 mph takes 11.4 seconds, but in normal use the i20 doesn’t feel pedestrian. The manually geared versions fare better being a second quicker to that benchmark speed and arguably allow you a bit more control. That said the automatic isn’t bad and provides a more refined change than many pseudo automatics.
Most i20s will spend their life pottering around towns and cities with the occasional long run. Which is a shame as it handles rather well on cross country roads and especially with the nicely slick manual gearbox that would be my recommendation on the gearbox choice. Overall the i20 is refined, comfortable and very well equipped. It offers rather a lot of car for not a lot of money

ROAD TEST: AUDI E-TRON GT QUATTRO – SIMPLY STUNNING!
It seems that manufacturers think EVs need to look quirky and left field, you expect combustion engine cars redesigned for all electric power to look essentially the same but all new EVs seem to be distinctly avantgarde. However some have taken a different route with their EVs. Take a bow Audi!
The e-tron GT is a stunning head turner that attracted nothing but positive comments and admiration from all who saw my car. It’s not surprising given the swooping lines, purposefully wide stance and sleek profile. Although styling is very subjective I think few would disagree that it’s a darned good looking car from every angle.
There are just two models, the GT quattro and RS GT with five trim levels and prices starting from a not inconsiderable £85,185, with the higher performance RS version from £116,185. As with any EV it’s all about range and the GT has an official maximum of 487km/303 miles on a single charge with a 50kw charger taking 1 hour 30 minutes
from 10 to 80% or just 23 minutes if you can locate a 150kw charger.
In reality, depending upon your driving style and how much of the considerable performance you use, the real world range is somewhere in the order of 270 miles. Ranges have improved, and will doubtless continue to improve, but then they need to get better with the lamentable public charging network. One can’t help sympathising with car makers!
As with all Audis there’s a feeling of solidity and quality with an interior is pleasingly free from much of the touchscreen mania that seems to afflict many interiors these days.
There’s an enviable standard equipment list too, but the optional extras can raise the list price to lofty heights.
It also feels special from its sweeping curves to its Alcantara clad interior. However those sweeping lines do have the effect of making the interior feel somewhat compact given the e-tron’s exterior dimensions. You do slide rather climb into the car.
On the road the e-tron doesn’t disappoint with blistering acceleration, 4.1 seconds to the benchmark 62 mph, and handling to match. There’s synthesised sound that offers a suitably aural background for such sporting looks and despite its considerable size the GT is remarkably nimble and enjoyable on cross country drives. It’s also a distinguished cruiser on A roads and motorways.
If you’re looking for style and class in EV form, and you have the financial wherewithal, then the e-tron GT is definitely your kind of car.

MG’S NEW SPORTS CAR, THE CYBERSTER
A pre-production design model of MG’s new sports car, the Cyberster, has made a first appearance at a special preview event held at the MG’s UK headquarters in Marylebone, London. Advanced design director Carl Gotham and his Marylebone team – who played a key role in creating the Cyberster – revealed the model for the first time.
Removing the covers, Gotham commented: “It is a special moment for all of us who have played a part in designing this unique car. The Cyberster will offer MG customers a striking, allelectric roadster which will be as exciting as MG sports cars of the past. The focus was to create a design that was respectful of the brand’s illustrious past and to bring back that sporting bloodline, while also being absolutely clear that it should be modern and forward-facing like the MG of today, completely in-tune with the rapid transition to electric vehicles.”
To celebrate the upcoming arrival of the Cyberster, MG is releasing a new film focusing on the design story. Presented by Carl Gotham, it reveals how his team have created a sports car that is set to be the first all-electric roadster on the market.
The Cyberster’s styling was envisioned by Gotham and his design colleagues at MG’s design studio in Marylebone to draw inspiration from MGs heritage. Signature design highlights include a distinctive long bonnet, low nose and curvaceous surfaces. It will also introduce some striking new features, including scissor doors and a Kammback rear design.
The two-seater Cyberster marks a keenly anticipated return to sports car production by the MG marque, with the car bringing the story right up to date with a high performance all-electric powertrain and modern cabin featuring an array of advanced technology.
Scheduled to arrive in the UK and Europe in the summer of 2024 MG will shortly announce further details of the Cyberster’s first public appearance later this year.

ROAD TEST: JEEP RENEGADE – ONE OF THE MOST CAPABLE, CHARACTERFUL AND LIKEABLE OFF-ROADERS
Everyone knows that Land Rover has a fine, and well deserved, reputation for off-road ability. It seems that every other 4×4 takes second place to the Solihull masters of all terrain.
However, there’s another brand that has an equally fine reputation that precedes, indeed inspired, the genius of Maurice Wilks who founded Land Rover. Jeeps are synonymous with WWII and it was their ability to traverse seemingly any kind of landscape that led to some of the best offroad vehicles ever produced.
Jeep still produce chunky Tonka-toy like off roaders, and my test model was the Renegade 4xe in plug-in hybrid form.
The petrol part of the power equation is a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged unit, the electrical assistance is provided by an 11.4 kwh battery.
The Renegade line-up is priced from £30,050 with the Renegade 4xe offered in Limited, or as with my test model, topspec Trailhawk trim. All the usual charging options are available including a standard domestic socket. Being a hybrid, smaller battery, on a domestic socket the charge time is as little as 4 hours.
just 7.1 seconds, and a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox along with that allwheel-drive ability.
That offers simple dial technology for the kind of surface you’re dealing with and even the ability to lock the system into low range for real mud-plugging. In hybrid mode the transition between electric and petrol is smooth and as long as the battery isn’t extremely low e-save mode and maximum regeneration means you can see the battery charge climb.
For that you have a commuting range of around 26 miles, maybe more depending upon your driving style, and modes for hybrid, electric and e-save (which helps charge the battery along with maximum braking regeneration).
On the road the Renegade is probably one of the most practical hybrids I have driven, with a decent turn of speed, 62 mph in
Standard fare is good with all the usual motoring accoutrements even on the lead-in version with my £38,100 Trailhawk model especially well appointed. The Jeep feels durable and is nicely appointed, but it battles against the fact that at this price it’s in Discovery Sport territory, albeit mild hybrid form rather than plug-in.
The Discovery will be seen as a more premium choice and I’m not sure the plug-in versus mild hybrid systems will make much difference. It makes the Renegade’s job somewhat harder, which is a shame as the Jeep is one of the most capable, characterful and likeable off roaders you can buy.

ROAD TEST: LEXUS ES300H TAKUMI – DRIVING LUXURY
It takes a lot of time, money and hard work to build a new brand, and many automotive giants have tried and failed over the years. One manufacturer who succeeded is Toyota, with their luxury brand Lexus. Launched in the UK back in 1990 with the LS400, early second hand models with large mileages still fetch surprisingly good money. It was a car that was never going to set your driving senses alight but used the best quality materials and engineering and was supremely refined.
Although style is very subjective Lexus models have become less conventional in their looks but continue to major on quality and reliability. The ES300 follows that theme with a drive train that’s smooth, refined and economical, but not one to thrash across a twisting cross country road.
Priced from €45,561/£40,000 the ES sits just below the largest Lexus offering, the LS, and has just one engine option of a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol/ electric hybrid ,mated to a CVT automatic gear box. It’s a happier engineering union than a lot of CVT and double clutch transmissions. Changes are smooth and can be encouraged via flappy paddles. There’s a more noticeable rise in
engine revs compared to a conventional automatic and under hard acceleration they remain high until the speed catches up. However, being a Lexus, everything remains pretty refined and quiet.
The ES is at its best as a comfortable cruiser and definitely for drivers who value quality and comfort above a sporting drive. It’s a car that doesn’t particularly entertain, but isn’t designed to in fairness. The comfort levels are superb and the interior has a feeling of quality wherever you look. The front seats have heating and cooling along with a substantial array of individual controls even in the rear where the seats are heated and recline. Other standard fare in the Takumi models includes, in a very long list, a fantastic 17-speaker audio system, an
electric rear sunblind, large multi-media screen, head-up display, powered tilt and slide sunroof, LED lights with cornering headlights and a veritable plethora of other comfort, convenience and safety features. The interior as a whole is a very nice and impressive place.
At €64,202/£56,365 the ES Takumi isn’t cheap but it offers a size and level of equipment that puts others to shame. If you like your automotive luxury, and want to be wafted along, then the ES should be on your shopping list.

The House & Lifestyle magazine team were offered the chance to come and try the new Chickaros on Holdenhurst road, a unique concept established in 2019, taking the UK food industry by storm offering a selection of handmade gourmet burgers, parmesan, steaks, and grilled range with additional artisan desserts and their renowned milkshakes – we jumped at the chance.
of flavour, served on top of a bed of fries and a side of coleslaw - this one is not to be missed!
The Chicken and Waffles were delightful. The chicken was cooked to perfection with a crispy coating sitting on top of a sweet waffle, the contrasting sweet and savoury goes well together and make the perfect combination.
Finally we had the Bellybuster Burger… where do we start! If any meat lovers out there want their belly busted this is the one to go for, an absolute mammoth of a burger with ham, sausage, turkey, chicken and beef stuffed into a beautiful bun. This definitely does what it says on the menu!
We washed these down with a selection of cocktails including a strawberry daiquiri mocktail – fruity and refreshing – it’s perfect
to drink in the sun with friends. The blue lagoon looks a little intimidating in colour but tastes like heaven, sweet and fruity, served with a dash of mint and slices of lemon and lime with a sugary coating around the rim to get those taste buds firing!
We eased ourselves in with the Biscoff milkshake while we looked over the menu. It could quite possibly be the best milkshake we ever had (and we have sampled plenty of these in our time). This one took the title and luckily wasn’t too filling, considering what was to come…
First up the lamb chops, cooked medium rare and smothered with a good helping of marinated spice to give an explosion

of the best new BBQ cookbooks to try this summer
Fire up the grill, because BBQ season is upon us, says Prudence Wade.
Few things are more satisfying than cooking up a storm on the BBQ.
Whether you’re catering for a crowd or firing up for a quick midweek dinner – as the weather starts to warm up, so do our grills.
BBQing used to have a somewhat basic reputation for chucking unseasoned steaks on the grill and calling it a day. However, there are worlds of possibilities when it comes to cooking over fire – for example, did you know you could even whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies outside?
New BBQ cookbooks released in preparation for summer take us all over the world with their recipes, and could even convince to you to build your own grill from scratch…

DJ BBQ’S BACKYARD BAKING
50 Awesome Recipes For Baking Over Live Fire by David Wright, Chris Taylor and Christian Stevenson
Think BBQs are just for hunks of meat? Think again. DJ BBQ’s Backyard Baking proves baking doesn’t have to be an indoor, rainy day pursuit – and can be just as delicious and as much fun over the open fire outside.
This book is a collaboration from three foodies – Christian Stevenson (better known as DJ BBQ), his regular co-author Chris Taylor and baker David Wright.
The trio argue both cooking over fire and baking are often seen as overly complicated pursuits that are easy to get wrong – but in this book, they set out to prove this misconception wrong.
The book starts with the basics – the equipment and set-ups you’ll need, with a baking focus – and then launches into a host of technicolour recipes.
Dishes range from simple crowd pleasers, such as campfire bread and chocolate chip cookies (which yes, you can bake on a BBQ, you’ll discover) to the more adventurous, including lamb kofta sausage rolls and a full Moroccan-inspired chicken dinner.
There’s even a recipe for charcoal ice cream – which isn’t black like you might see on Instagram, but is full of those beautiful, smokey flavours. With DJ BBQ’s signature brand of wit and irreverence, this book will open up the worlds of possibilities within outdoor cooking.

THE DIY BBQ COOKBOOK How To Build Your Own BBQ And Cook Up A Feast by
James Whetlor
This is one for the DIY enthusiasts – anyone who really wants to their hands dirty when BBQing, from start to finish. While it’s all very well and good to use a regular, shopbought BBQ, food writer James Whetlor is a huge proponent for making your own.
Why? Because shop-bought versions are often expensive, and near-impossible to cart with you on a jaunt to the beach or a day in the park. But Whetlor predominantly highlights how fun it is to make your own BBQ. You don’t have to be a DIY wizard or a building maestro to do so – some of the simplest set-ups will be hugely effective.
You’ll need a few basic bits of kit for a DIY BBQ – including breeze blocks, pots, planks and chains – all of which Whetlor says is available at your local DIY store.
He also urges safety – wearing work gloves and goggles when building.
Whetlor gives a comprehensive guide on building your own BBQ – covering all the different options, from small versions to one that can smoke a whole pig – and there’s even an ingenious step-by-step guide for building your own tandoor oven out of a flowerpot.
If you’re tentative about building your own BBQ, Whetlor’s guide is so comprehensive he’ll put any nerves at rest – and then he follows up with the best bit: what to cook on your new creation.
Dishes range from vibrant veggie options – mushroom tacos and miso-marinated aubergine steaks – to meaty dishes (coconut hot wings, tandoori quail, spicy pork ribs and more).

RECIPES BY JAMES WHETLOR & TIM HAYWARD | FOOD & DRINK
INGREDIENTS
100ml coconut milk
2-4 fresh bird’s eye chillies (or another fresh chilli as you prefer)
6 garlic cloves, peeled
2tsp light brown sugar
2tsp smoked paprika
3tbsp olive oil
2 limes, 1 juiced and 1 cut into wedges
1kg chicken wings
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
INGREDIENTS
4 large globe artichokes
1 lemon, cut into 4 wedges
4 garlic cloves, left whole, but given a whack to slightly crush
1 large egg yolk
Juice of 1 lemon
200g/generous 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Olive oil, for brushing
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
James Whetlor’s coconut chicken wings
SERVES 4
1. In a blender, whizz the coconut milk, chilli, garlic, sugar, paprika, olive oil and lime juice to a smooth sauce, adding a generous amount of salt and black pepper to taste.
2. Pat the chicken dry with paper towel and arrange in a bowl. Season lightly with salt and coat in half the marinade, then cover and refrigerate for at least two hours, preferably overnight if possible.
3. When ready to cook, preheat the BBQ to a medium heat.
4. Lay the chicken pieces on the grill over the heat in a single layer and bake for about 30 minutes or until the skin has turned crispy and the meat is cooked through. While cooking, baste the chicken with the reserved marinade two or three times.
5. Serve with lime wedges on the side.
Tim Hayward’s grilled artichokes with hollandaise
SERVES 4-8
1. Wrap the artichokes individually in a double layer of foil, each with two tablespoons of water, a lemon wedge, a garlic clove and a big pinch of salt.
2. Using the indirect set-up, place the wrapped artichokes on the stainless steel grid and leave them to steam for about 45-60 minutes with the dome closed until tender.
3. Meanwhile, for the hollandaise, put the egg yolk and four teaspoons of lemon juice into a heatproof bowl with one teaspoon of water and whisk together for two to three minutes until thick. Very gradually, whisk in the melted butter (leaving the white milky solids behind) in a thin stream until thick and creamy. Season with salt, pepper and more lemon juice to taste.
4. Keep the hollandaise sauce warm over a pan of boiling water off the heat, stirring occasionally.
5. Unwrap and halve the artichokes, top to bottom/vertically, then paint the cut side with olive oil. Using the direct set-up, grid cut-side down on the bars golden brown. Sprinkle with salt to taste just before serving.

115g softened butter
115g granulated sugar
50g soft light brown sugar
1 egg
1tsp vanilla extract
120g plain flour, sifted
¼tsp salt
½tsp bicarbonate of soda
100g chocolate chips
The most important instruction for this recipe is: do not eat all the cookie dough before cooking them.
DJ BBQ’s chocolate chip cookies
MAKES 8-10
1. Try to make sure all the ingredients are roughly the same temperature, as this will give you a smoother mix. Cream together the butter and sugars until light, pale and fluffy. Then mix in the egg and vanilla, followed by the dry ingredients. Lastly, stir through the chocolate chips. Now refrigerate the cookie dough in the bowl overnight. That’s right, you just made cookie dough and now you have to wait until TOMORROW before you can eat the cookies. I can only apologise. Forgive me. Tomorrow you’ll love me.
2. The next day, get your outdoor cooker going.
3. Roll the cookie dough into balls around 75-100g, depending on how big you like your sweet chocolate-studded frisbees. Next, cut some circles out of baking parchment –double the number of dough balls you have – ensuring they’re slightly bigger than the final size you want your cookies to be. Evenly squish each dough ball between two discs of baking parchment to create a cookie shape.
4. Place the paper-covered cookies directly on the plancha. Cook for five to 10 minutes on each side, flipping with a fish slice. If you like a chewier or crispier cookie, then cook for the shorter time, for crispy cookies cook for longer.
5. Let them cool slightly before peeling off the paper and serving with an ice-cold glass of milk and an episode of Justice League (other cartoons are available, but they’re not as cool).

Against All Odds Life changed forever by illegal adoption in Ireland
We spoke to local author Theresa Tinggal about a book she has written and recently published on Amazon. ‘Against All Odds’ is the true story of how at the age of 48 she discovered that her parents were not her biological parents, unknowingly living a life that was essentially a lie. It took her 16 years to unravel the truth, astonishingly discovering that there were thousands of people like herself illegally registered as the children of somebody else.
Brought up in Ireland, Theresa moved to Bournemouth when she was 19. Subsequently marrying, she had two children and settled into a normal happy life. This all changed however, when in 2002 she discovered she was not the person she thought she was. Theresa was on a mission to establish the truth and has campaigned relentlessly in Ireland over the past 20 years for an investigation into illegal adoptions/registrations. This all came to fruition however, when in March 2022, the Irish government published a report into illegal registrations, opening the door for adoptees, both legal and illegal, to access their birth files.
Her motto, if no one speaks up, nothing changes’, has carried her through, against all the odds over the last 20 years, culminating in the discovery of her biological family in Tipperary, Ireland, in 2017 through the miracle of DNA.
The corruption, greed and disregard for women and children are still evident today in the new legislation passed on 23rd October 2022 and lack of redress for everyone, and in the reluctance to entertain legal action from those affected.
Once again, the Catholic church and State have got away with it.
Against All Odds is written by Theresa Hiney Tinggal and available to buy from Amazon in paperback, £12.99

These sessions include all of the lady classes we run per week; Wednesday at 6pm, Friday at 5:30pm and Sunday at 10am.
It also includes access to Wednesday and Friday Mixed Thai Boxing classes at 9:30am and our Wednesday morning Bootcamp at 6:30am and Saturday at 12pm (which is an hour and a half class – both mixed).
At Wassmuffin we are lucky enough to be running three ladies classes a week which are incredibly popular with our members. Two are run by the incredible Isa who joined us six years ago to ‘become fitter’ but has since not only become part of our fight team but is also a knowledgeable and invaluable coach. Her classes are energetic and technical but also basic enough for beginners to join, even if you don’t have any previous experience in Thai boxing. Then we have Alex and Gemma teaching our bootcamp classes. Alex with a wealth of experience and Gemma, having joined us
six years ago mainly wanting to lose some baby weight, is now teaching for us. Both are invaluable members of our team.
You will have me, Lottie, for the Sunday ladies class and the two morning mixed classes. I have been teaching for over 10 years and love it. The classes are high energy fun with basics but also technical too, so a real mixed bag!
You will have 30 days to pick which classes suit your lifestyle. So that’s 28 sessions per month that we run for you to pick your 12 sessions from. We are flexible so you can be!
The feed back at Wassmuffin’s is always incredible and we have amazing members and clients who are supportive and fun. The main comment we hear is; “we are like one big family”, and one you will love being part of. Make the move today – you won’t regret it! And you’ll even have some new gym kit to start your sessions in. FUC is a 5 star clothing brand with a big story behind it. It’s a win win situation.

Hoosiers, Seeds and Cheeky Girls bound for Poole Harbour
Chart topping bands The Hoosiers and Lightning Seeds are joined by legendary pop sensations The Cheeky Girls at this year’s Poole Harbour Festival from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 July.
With more than 50 acts over four stages, Poole and Bournemouth’s biggest and best family live music weekend is back with a bang this summer, boasting the starriest line up in its seven-year history with the late addition of indie favourites The Lottery Winners whose latest album Anxiety Replacement Therapy went straight to number one within days of its release last month.
“This is the party Poole has been crying out for this year,” says festival organiser Ben Dyas.
“We’ve all been feeling the pinch so we’ve done our best to keep prices sensible but still fill the bill with household names, great entertainers, the best tributes and local acts as well as great food and drink and loads of fun stuff for the kids.”
A number of special ticket deals are still available including weekend family tickets for just £55 and threeday adult tickets from just £30.
Best known for mid-00s hits like ‘Worried About Ray’ and ‘Choice’, The Hoosiers scored a number one in 2021 with the football charity single ‘Route 66’; while fellow headliners The Lightning Seeds, who have already played Liverpool’s Eurovision party as well as Glastonbury this year, will feature indie classics ‘Pure’, ‘The Life of Riley’ and ‘Lucky You’ alongside their classic football anthem ‘Three Lions’. The band’s latest album, See You in the Stars, was released last year to widespread acclaim.

Transylvanian twins The Cheeky Girls need no introduction to pop fans having caused a sensation with their number two debut single ‘Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)’ in 2002 and its top three follow ups ‘Take Your Shoes Off’ and ‘It’s A Cheeky Holiday’ securing their current status as TikTok comeback queens.
Also billed are 1990s hitmakers Space revisiting their best-known hits ‘Neighbourhood’, ‘Female of the Species’ and ‘Begin Again’; and back by popular demand come Bristolian dance fusionists Dr Meaker who were blown away by their reception at last year’s Poole Harbour Festival.
As ever, there’s a strong line up of crowd-pleasing tributes to the likes of Queen, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Prodigy, Guns N’ Roses, REM and Coldplay, as well as a DJ bill topped by cut-n-paste king Jaguar Skills, remixer extraordinaire Tall Paul, original Junglist Nicky Blackmarket and the one and only Brandon Block, with Bournemouth’s own Freeze joining dance scene movers and shakers including The Manor Reunion with Jon Langford and Paul Moss.
Leading local live music merchants including the ferocious Millie Manders and the Shut Up, Filta, Saints of Sin and everyone’s favourite four string slingers Mother Ukers ensure there’s no let up in quality from beginning to end.
Away from the music, there’s free children’s entertainment all weekend with the return of the amazing dinosaur shows, alongside Mad 4 Animals, Mr Merlin, Krazy Kev and Jules the Entertainer as well as street performers and the popular circus skills workshops.
Over the years, Poole Harbour Festival has earned a deserved reputation for its quality food and drink offer and revellers can be sure of a great selection of delicious street food and a wide choice of local ales and ciders at the bars.
Poole Harbour Festival opens at 5pm on Friday, noon on Saturday and 11am on Sunday, closing at 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 7pm on Sunday.
Tickets available now at pooleharbourfestival.com.

The world’s most-beloved tale of love at first sight. Set in a sultry Italian summer, hot-blooded passion pulses and tempers fray as young lovers hastily tread their dangerous path through the bitter feud of two warring families. The short ferry journey from Poole Harbour really sets up the evening, and sailing back to shore at night under the stars is memorable. Patrons often go to the island using their ticket from 5pm and explore the island or picnic. The ticket is fully inclusive.

THE VERDICT
18 - 22 JULY
The powerful bestselling courtroom thriller that inspired a multi Academy Award-Nominated film starring Paul Newman.
Frank Galvin is a washed up veteran lawyer and an alcoholic. He is presented with one last chance to redeem himself when he is given an open-and-shut medical malpractice case that no one thinks he can win. Up against the unforgiving medical establishment, he courageously refuses an out of court settlement, believing it is negligence that has condemned a young mother. Smelling a cover up, he instead takes the case and the entire legal system to court...
This phenomenal and gripping courtroom thriller has been a huge success at theatres across the UK and Ireland.
