SHAKESPEARE –SUMMER TOUR

LEWIS-MANNING CELEBRATES A MAGICAL EVENING OF 1920’S GLAMOUR AT THEIR NIGHTINGALE BALL

Lewis-Manning Hospice Care hosted their 1920’s inspired Nightingale Ball, by kind permission of Canford School. The extraordinary schoolhouse was the perfect setting for the glamorous fundraising event.

Guests enjoyed cocktails and canapés in ‘The Aviary’, complete with real trees and birdsong being played, before taking their seats in the breath-taking Great Hall, where they enjoyed creative dining provided by local caterers, Molecular Magic. A musical rendition of ‘A Nightingale sings in Berkeley Square’ was performed whilst celebrating the amazing work of Lewis-Manning’s clinical team, in a candlelight parade. The evening finished with dancing to the talented musicians from, ‘The UnSwung Heroes’.

The event was expertly compered by hospice Patron and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Felicity Irwin. Guests and

STUDIO GLOBAL UNDERGOES FULL REBRAND AND NEW LOOK

One of Dorset’s longest established media agencies is sporting a new look and name after undergoing a full rebrand.

Studio Global, formerly Global Brand Communications, is using the tagline ‘Your Story, Beautifully Told’ for its services focusing on brand, digital and motion (animation/filming). Sharon Parker, Managing Director, said: “When we sat down and created Studio Global, we decided to focus on the things we love, what we’re great at and where we’re giving our clients great value.

“We are not the team that you come to just for a marketing strategy, but we will take the time to understand what your business needs and deliver a plan with key assets that looks fantastic and engaging. Your story, beautifully told. That’s us.”

Based in Boscombe, Studio Global serves a diverse mix of sectors all over the UK, including hospitality, financial services, IT, entrepreneurs, luxury brands and local authorities and boasts an impressive client base.

NEXT DOOR, NEXT LEVEL FOR B4B MARKETING AS THEY EXPAND INTO NEW OFFICE

Poole-based digital marketing agency b4b are celebrating as they have taken on another office to meet increasing client demand and growth in staff numbers.

The two storey, 2,200 square foot office is adjacent to their existing office of the same size on the Albany Business Park in Poole and will house the agency’s software and web teams.

The agency, founded by Anthony Tilley in 2008, has gone from strength to strength and now employs over 60 staff across the two offices in Poole and one office in Sosnowiec, Poland.

As well as specialising in software development and website design and build, the agency has a 23 strong marketing team with specialists covering SEO, PPC, content marketing, social media, email marketing, PR, photography, video, animation, design and print – all co-ordinated by a team of experienced account managers.

providing sports clothing and logo design to businesses across Dorset and beyond.

Having the office in Poland is a jewel in the crown for b4b as it means that clients can pay comparatively lower hourly rates but receive expert advice and the latest technological know-how.

The agency, which has a results-focussed approach and prides itself on generating quality leads for clients, has continued to expand its marketing services and now counts some of the region’s leading businesses as clients including Broadview Shading Solutions, W&S Recycling, Town & Country Communications, Cobra RIBs, Prokil, Lester Brunt Wealth Management, Jade Aden, Charles Trent, Trade Price Conservatories and A-One Insurance.

In terms of turnover and staff count, b4b are one of Dorset’s largest agencies – in the last 2 years alone, they have almost doubled their turnover and staff count. As testament to this growth, they won B2B Business of the Year at the Poole Business Awards last year and have also been voted one of the South’s Top 100 companies to work for. STUDIO

The agency also offers branded promotional products and corporate workwear. In fact, this is how the business originally started by

A NEW CAPTAIN AT THE HELM

Mrs Holloway, Head of Talbot Heath speaks on the transition to a new Head; “After thirteen wonderful years as Head of Talbot Heath, I am excited to be handing over the wheel to my successor, Tracy Harris. It has been an absolute privilege and pleasure to have been custodian of such a successful, pioneering and visionary school. As someone who cherishes learning and has spent a career enthusing pupils to foster their intellectual curiosity, creativity and aspirations, it has been hugely rewarding to see Talbot Heath forge forwards with its groundbreaking curriculum and future focused vision for education.

A FLUFFY NEW ARRIVAL SURE TO MELT YOUR HEART

Marwell is thrilled to announce the arrival of a fluffy new addition who has already stolen the hearts of people around the world.

Tashi, an endangered red panda, is settling into his new home at Marwell Zoo after arriving from Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire today.

The tiny cub was affectionately nicknamed Little Red by keepers before being given his official name and news of his “miracle arrival” made international headlines.

MARWELL ZOO

www.marwell.org.uk

“The school has been described as warm, convivial, supportive, innovative and a centre of excellence. We enjoy a national and international profile for our innovation and creativity, as well as our sporting excellence. My aim, as Head, was to build on the foundations laid by my predecessors to ensure that the reputation established by the first headmistress, Mary Broad, in 1886, was maintained. I love the fact that her pupils were written about in the Bournemouth Echo as ‘once again demonstrating all the attributes one would normally associate with boys’, having been seen conducting science experiments on Talbot Heath with butterfly nets. How radical. How daring.

“Talbot Heath had a Sixth Form in 1886, even though girls were not able to sit higher level qualifications or progress to university. Miss Broad took school trips of girls across Europe in the 1800s, with no heed to what people may think.

“She was bold and ambitious for her pupils and was not going to be constrained by societal norms. I have followed gladly in her footsteps, with the determination and commitment to support the next generation of girls, from 3-18, to ‘think big’ and develop their loves and passions.

“I know that Mrs Harris shares this passion and vision and is excited to become the eighth headteacher in the history of Talbot Heath. I will be taking up the helm of a boat and heading out onto the high seas, as she takes over the helm of the school and I wish her every success in her exciting new venture. Talbot Heath is a wonderful school and looks forward to welcoming her most warmly.

LIGHTHOUSE MONEY TALKS PAY OFF FOR ARTISTS, FUNDERS AND FREELANCERS

More than 40 mainly Dorset-based artists, funders and freelancers gathered at Lighthouse Poole in June for Money, Money, Money – How Do We Fund Work and Make a Living? a one-day special conference to discuss arts financing.

Hosted by Lighthouse and Arts Development Company, two morning discussion panels were followed by workshop sessions in the afternoon as working artists, freelance creatives and venue staff met with funders from local authorities and grant-making bodies to consider the financial climate and what can be done to do things better.

Kitchen House

If home is where the heart is, the heart is where the k en is.

Since their founding in 1987, Kitchen House has provided new kitchens ranging from fixed budget kitchens, right through to larger and more complex, designer projects. Being a local business (without the large scale marketing budgets of a national chain) they have always relied on a good reputation within the area to sustain them. Unlike the big chains, they take the time to make sure that you’re completely happy with what they have installed. A high portion of their work has come from prior recommendation.

A bespoke kitchen

Kitchen House fit full kitchens, including all necessary units and kitchen appliances including everything from a custom drinks bar to a hidden access utility room. Still, there’s more to designing a stunning kitchen than just having all the right components. They o er tailored design advice, based on

each individual space. Say your kitchen is only three metres across, they can design bespoke made worktops and units to utilise your space to it’s full potential and with over 30 years in business, they have seen and done it all. You can put your full faith in their hands when it comes to designing a kitchen that you will love.

The price of a new kitchen

Before you even contact them you’ll probably have an idea of how much you want to spend on a new kitchen. It’s a big investment, especially in the modern financial world. There are some companies who will give you a lower quality kitchen, and others that insist you should spend more. The team at Kitchen House will work their hardest to work with your budget, creating

something that works both financially and atheistically for you. They’ll work with you to make sure that the kitchen you get is personal, e icient and suits your home.

Using the best kitchen appliances and fittings

Kitchens are often in constant use, so it’s always best to invest in the most robust and e icient products. Their extensive range of worktops and ovens are sourced from the leading manufacturers, who use only the most e ective materials. Their appliance suppliers include leading brands like Siemens, Fisher & Paykel and Blaupunkt. With access to these high quality manufacturers your new kitchen can be fitted with stylish and reliable range cookers, ovens, fridges and freezers.

If you have any questions about the service they provide, please feel free to get in touch.

If you’d rather take a look at some of the features that they o er in person, then head down to their showroom. Their friendly team will be more than happy to talk it over with you.

Why cruising

the Med

Lisa Salmon takes a whistlestop cruise on Tui’s newly refitted Marella Voyager.

A whale breaking the surface of a calm blue sea isn’t what you’d normally expect to witness as you eat dinner. But when that meal is during a Mediterranean cruise, maybe it’s not so unexpected.

The whale is just one of the many standout moments during a cruise aboard Tui’s Marella Voyager, the newest member of the Marella Cruises fleet, which carries 1,912 passengers and first set sail under its new name in June this year, after a multi-million pound refit.

We are on a seven-night Mediterranean Secrets cruise, which sails from Palma, Majorca, and calls at Piombino, Italy; Savona, Italy; Calvi, Corsica; Toulon, France; and Palamos, Spain. It’s a whistlestop tour which really provides an enticing taste of what the Med has to offer.

AUGUST 23 36
is the easiest and most affordable way to see

Like many cruises, its all-inclusive – and our Premium package offers most alcoholic drinks, including cocktails, as well as a waistband-expanding amount of food.

Given the fact we are in a huge Executive Suite cabin, with a lounge, double bedroom and spacious balcony, it would be all-too-easy to just lounge on board in a sun-soaked, stuffed-full-of-good-food alcoholic haze for the whole trip. But despite the decadent luxuries –including the Oceans Spa, a swimming pool, whirlpool baths, a gym, cinema, Broadway Show Lounge, nightclub, casino, and even crazy golf on the top deck – there can be little more intoxicating than waking up every morning in a beautiful new port, and having the opportunity to explore a new foreign city right outside your cabin door.

After an initial first day at sea, where we have no option but to laze on board, our first stop is the ancient port of Piombino in beautiful Tuscany, Italy. We choose to take an excursion to Siena. The historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the majority of its charming and well-preserved sandy-red buildings dating from the 12th to the 17th centuries. Since medieval times, the city has been divided into 17 contrade (neighbourhoods), among which there is still a fierce rivalry – even today, most visibly demonstrated in the world-famous Palio horse race, which is held twice a year around the city’s grand Piazza del Campo.

Sadly, we weren’t there for the race (which takes place in early July and mid-August), so we settle for an al fresco pizza in the piazza after a tour around the pretty city’s ancient buildings, including its stunning cathedral.

MED CRUISE | TRAVEL
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 37

After exploring Siena, it’s back to the ship to get ready for dinner in one of Voyager’s 10 restaurants. The dress code is smart casual in the evenings, which is less formal than on many other cruise ships, so even though we dine at the ‘exclusive’ Silver Fork restaurant, there is no real need to dress up during the voyage.

For those who do like a bit of glamour, there’s a Dress to Impress night once every week, where you can go the whole hog, with black tie dinner suits for men and sequins for women, although most – like us – opt for just a suit and tie/cocktail dress, or stay in smart-casual gear.

Silver Fork, which serves ‘British favourites with a contemporary twist’, is one of the restaurants where there’s a supplementary charge (around £40pp), but it’s well worth the extra. We both choose the seven-course tasting menu, with my vegetarian courses including a deconstructed veggie Scotch egg (a softly-poached egg in a tasty bean-packed sauce), and vegetarian Wellington (my husband’s course is beef Wellington).

Each dish is paired with various wines, and our glasses are refilled at the speed of light by our multi-talented and friendly waiter, Jason, who even finds the time to stroll around the restaurant strumming on a guitar and singing beautifully (but quietly!).

This is where we spot the whale – making it truly magical. But there are plenty of other enjoyable dining choices, ranging from Mexican specialities at Abuela’s, to Italian at Nonna’s and Vista, and pan-Asian at Kora La – not to mention the new food hall The Kitchens, which boasts eight different eateries, providing everything from roast dinners to curries and pittas.

After dinner, it’s hard to resist hauling our full tummies to the Broadway Show Lounge for a different musical every night, performed by some great singers and dancers. But if you’re not in the mood, there’s always the option of a drink or two at one of the ship’s 10 bars, including the lively British-style pub, the Squid & Anchor, or the more upmarket Flutes, where we really enjoy listening to a pianist.

The wealth of dining options and entertainment is more than matched by the myriad of sightseeing choices on offer throughout the cruise, and the next day we wake up in Savona, where we choose a trip to the historic

port of Genoa. We wander round its network of narrow lanes, and see the tiny, unprepossessing house of the explorer Christopher Columbus, just outside the city’s 14th-century walls.

All this exploring, although admittedly not on a Columbus-like scale, warrants some serious relaxation – and that’s exactly what we get at our next port of call, Calvi. We head to the beautiful Algajola beach, a long stretch of pale sand and crystal-clear turquoise sea, overlooked by a 16th- century fort (which we don’t visit, because we are too busy having the best time doing absolutely nothing).

Stopping at Toulon in France, we visit St-Tropez on the French Riviera. The jet-set haunt was the setting for Brigitte Bardot film And God Created Woman. It’s great to see the gold-leaf covered bronze statue of Bardot in the square facing the iconic Hotel de Paris – and wise not to buy food in the town, as, not surprisingly, prices in St-Tropez are not cheap!

MED CRUISE | TRAVEL
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 39

So much to see in such a short time is exhausting, and it’s easy to understand why some might choose to stay on the ship in some ports, given there’s so much to do onboard, and all your food and drink is free.

But the last port of call is Palamos, and we can’t resist heading off for a quick tour of Barcelona, shoe-horning in obligatory photos of Gaudi’s unfinished yet-stunning Sagrada Familia Basilica, buying a few trinkets and huge ice-creams from the buzzing Las Ramblas shopping area.

Then, it’s finally back to Palma again, where we disembark Marella Voyager for the last time, having glimpsed what feels like a huge and fascinating chunk of the Mediterranean. If you love travel – not to mention plenty of great food and drink – cruising really is a quick and luxurious way to see the world, that leaves you itching to go back for more.

How to plan your trip

A seven-night all-inclusive Mediterranean Secrets cruise on Marella Voyager starts from £1,217 per person (two sharing), including return flights from London Gatwick. Shore excursions start from around £25 per person and can be booked in advance or onboard. Visit www.tui. co.uk/cruise.

Landlord.

of this to me as a Landlord?

Well aren’t you lucky! If you have great Tenants then you should probably look to keep them. Remember that the relationship between you as a Landlord, your Tenants and your Lettings Agent is a three way one – by all working together, the Landlord/Tenant relationship can be carefully and happily maintained.

Remember that your Letting Agent is there to ensure that you comply with the ever-changing legislation and to work hard to keep a great working relationship with your Tenants – Happy Tenants mean Happy Landlords!

The main benefit to you is, obviously, that your Tenants look after your property well and that they pay their rent on time. There is also the financial benefit to you. By keeping your current Tenants, you will not risk a void period, have the costs of referencing, check in and check out, inventories, Tenancy Agreements etc.

A good Letting Agent will make sure they negotiate a rent increase to keep you in line with market rent. As you are limited in the rental increase by a maximum of the Consumer Price Index – these figures need to be carefully balanced!

At Fleur Lettings we’re very particular when we choose Tenants as we’re conscious that we’re looking to match the right Tenants with the right properties and Landlords.

Whilst Tenants do move out of their homes for various reasons, at Fleur Lettings we have a very good Tenant retention record! Over the last 12 months 85% of our Tenants have stayed in their homes. Even those who have grown as a family, ask us if we have another property available, so they can stay with Fleur Lettings.

If you need help with this, or any other area of renting out your property, please contact the friendly and knowledgeable Team at Fleur Lettings on 01202 001080.

HAPPY FAMILIES: ADVENTURES WITH THE AHLBERGS EXHIBITION AND TRAIL

22 July to 5 November

A new family exhibition and outdoor trail at the National Trust’s Mottisfont in Hampshire celebrates the classic children’s books created by illustrator Janet Ahlberg and writer Allan Ahlberg, including The Jolly Postman, Happy Families and Each Peach Pear Plum.

Over 150 original artworks, chosen together with the Ahlberg family, will be on display in an interactive and immersive exhibition with indoor and outdoor gallery spaces, together with an Ahlberg-themed activity trail.

The National Trust show is the biggest ever retrospective of the Ahlbergs’ work and includes never shown before illustrations from It Was a Dark and Stormy Night and Starting School. Janet and Allan worked together for over 20 years, publishing 38 books and winning numerous awards and accolades including two Kate Greenaway medals and the Kurt Maschler Award.

Daughter Jessica Ahlberg was the inspiration for several books including The Baby’s Catalogue, and The Jolly Postman: “I’m so happy and excited about this exhibition. My dad and stepmum visited Mottisfont a few years ago, and said how beautiful it is, and what a wonderful space it is to show artwork. I think this exhibition is going to be a lot of fun for young visitors; the curators have put so much thought into entertaining everyone, from babies to adults. I can’t wait to bring my own children!”

Narrated in Allan’s own words, visitors can explore how the Ahlbergs combined their ideas, words and preliminary sketches to produce stories that enriched the early reading experience for children. Allan’s enchanting wordplay and Janet’s intricate illustrations created books that melded fantasy with realism, producing stories influenced by both classic fairy tales, nursery rhymes and family life.

“…one day Janet said: ‘Could you write me a picture book? I’m getting all these books from publishers about how to make things out of yoghurt pots, I’m sick of them!’ And so I wrote a story, and it was as though someone had turned a key in my back. I was off, and I’ve been writing children’s stories ever since.”

The stories are brought to life through playful and imaginative experiences in five interconnected gallery spaces. Original artworks and text from the books are exhibited in immersive, family-friendly ways. Big, bold wall displays provide photo opportunities with colourful backdrops and favourite characters. And throughout the gallery, there are comfy areas where children can curl up with a book.

Mrs Wobble the Waitress’s cosy café has been recreated, with a table to sit at decorated with crockery featuring tiny versions of Janet’s illustrations. In a room dedicated to Cops and Robbers and Burglar Bill children can feature in their own ‘Wanted’ poster and have their ‘mug shot’ taken in a cops and robbers line up.

The character of Burglar Bill came about through Allan’s work as a primary school teacher and demonstrated his ability to view the world through a child’s eyes: “I had a fair idea children would like it, even before I’d written it. It grew out of a game I used to play with a class of infants.  At the end of the day there would often be five minutes to fill. I got the habit of telling them about Burglar Bill, who walked the local streets looking for houses to burgle. I’d use the names of local streets and the kids’ actual houses. They loved it, wondering whose house would be next.”

A room devoted to The Jolly Postman series includes the original, hand-crafted draft of the first book, including the famous pull-out letters, postcards and games. The writing, design and mechanics of creating this ‘movable’ book took Janet and Allan nearly five years to perfect, resulting in a handmade prototype that they could be sure ‘worked’ for children and be mass produced.

An interactive room for younger visitors is dedicated to baby books such as Peepo and The Baby’s Catalogue –a book inspired by Janet and Allan’s daughter, Jessica and her early fascination with a Mothercare catalogue. A few years later, Allan watched a slightly older Jessica play with a stack of envelopes and this sowed the seeds for The Jolly Postman.

Outside, the Beech Circle in Mottisfont’s gardens will be transformed into an outdoor garden gallery with a reading and discovery area, decorated with images from Each Peach Pear Plum, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year.

They can help the Jolly Postman deliver his letters, enjoy activities inspired by Happy Families characters, discover a cosy space for creating and telling stories, and find things to make along the way.

Visitors can head to the shop to discover Ahlberg books and other merchandise throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Helen Potts, Visitor Experience Manager at Mottisfont: “I grew up reading the Ahlbergs’ books as a child –waiting impatiently for the next book to be released! I was enthralled by the rhythmic storytelling and the detailed, exquisite drawings. It’s been an honour to work with Allan and his daughter Jessica, and to tell

the story of one of the most famous partnerships in children’s literature, through the wonderful worlds they created together.”

The Happy Families: Adventures with the Ahlbergs exhibition runs from Saturday 22 July – Sunday 5 November 2023. The summer activity trail runs from Saturday 22 July – 3 September, £3 per trail.

How – and why – to prioritise mindfulness

It can be hard to find time to actually unwind in the chaotic joy of summer.

With bank holidays, festivals, trips and social commitments in the summer, it can feel difficult to say no, even if you really want to take some time out for yourself.

“Summer can feel like a never-ending list of activities and events, and this might encourage us to overindulge in too many late nights, alcohol, and food, ” says psychologist Dr Alison McClymont.

“Of course, doing this occasionally is not going to hurt, but to do it repeatedly will have a negative effect on your overall wellbeing. Rest and relaxation are the petrol you need to ensure your car keeps running,” she says.

So, what can we do to make that a priority, while not totally abandoning our social lives?

What do you actually want to do?

“It’s important to remember that ‘no’ is a sentence, and your boundaries matter,” says Carly Rowena, wellbeing influencer, who’s been working with Sky Stream.

“Remember to simplify your mind and your decisions, by prioritising what you actually want to do, rather than what you feel you should do. I’d recommend finding out what you want this summer by journaling, stretching, or meditating,” she explains.

Think about how you feel

You may not know who to prioritise.

“We can be mindful of our internal experiences by being aware of the emotions we experience when socialising,” says Chloe Wheeler, assistant psychologist at Cygnet Health Care. “This can support us to recognise who makes us feel safe, uplifted and loved, and who may add to feelings of burnout, stress or anxiety.”

AUGUST 23 60

Be present and slow down

“Mindfulness isn’t sitting quietly and trying to stop your thoughts, it’s allowing yourself to be present and to allow those thoughts to float past you like sticks floating down a river.

“Adding mindfulness into your routine gives you a chance to find out about yourself, slow down, prevent burnout and instead, find gratitude and joy throughout your day,” Rowena explains.

“According to research by Sky Stream, 94% of Brits wish their lives were simpler, with 74% agreeing that life is more complicated now than it was five years ago, which is why it’s more important than ever to focus on finding pockets of stillness and connection,” she says.

Drink less when socialising

Many summer events revolve around drinking.

“Physically, as well as psychologically, alcohol directly affects a person’s ability to focus,” says Dr Henk Swanepoel, lead neuropsychologist at Cygnet Health Care.

“As we know, a key principle of mindfulness is to focus attention on the present moment, by practising mindfulness breathing. However, alcohol can reduce a person’s ability to concentrate and pay attention to this experience.”

Get outdoors

“Get outside as much as you can and ground yourself,” says Rowena.

And for parents, this is important to do with or without your children. “Children are incredible at being present and mindful, and need very little to find this. Give yourself time to make animals out of the clouds, paint an egg box with colours and find things in nature that match the colours, throw sticks and race in the water.”

Your presence and peace is important too.

Whytewood Park, Jenny’s Lane, Lytchett Matravers

Redwood, £1,650,000 | Woodhill, £1,600,000 | Cherrytree, £1,500,000

Whytewood Park is a select development of just three individually designed homes with over 3000 sq. ft. of accommodation, enclosed gardens and rural views.

Each property is unique in its design and all benefit from zoned underfloor heating to every room which can be adjusted from a smart phone, fibre internet connection, CCTV installed and electric car charging points. Combined with strong eco-credentials, the property is also complete with solar panels and air-source heat pumps for efficiency.

All properties enjoy private access with a large frontage for parking that leads to an oversized garage. The homes all feature large and fully enclosed gardens with sunny aspects. Redwood and Woodhill benefit from a parcel of the woodland extending from the rear garden.

Viewings are now available where you can see the outstanding finish that can be expected for the properties, including the superior fully integrated kitchen and high-quality bathrooms.

Lytchett Matravers is a Dorset village situated on high ground overlooking the Purbeck Hills with glimpses of Corfe Castle and the waters of Poole Harbour. It is almost six miles equidistant from the Saxon town of Wareham, the Market town of Wimborne and Poole, a thriving Harbour Town. The County town of Dorchester is also within easy reach with its bustling high street and characterful history.

With Cherrytree and Redwood already complete, Woodhill is expected September 2023.

Top tips to create a kitchen herb garden 7

You could soon be adding fragrant herbs to your dishes with expert Jekka McVicar’s 7 top tips.

Want some mint in your mojito, torn basil leaves on your tomato salad or a sprinkling of coriander on your curry?

There are so many versatile herbs which are easy to grow, but can make all the difference to the flavour of your cooking.

Renowned herb specialist, designer and author Jekka McVicar, who runs a herb farm in south Gloucestershire and has helped Riverstone, luxury London retirement residences, curate dedicated herb gardens, says: “There is nothing more enjoyable than being in a herb garden, nurturing your plants, watching them grow and seeing the pollinators they attract.”

She has come up with these top tips on how to create your own kitchen herb garden.

OUTDOOR LIVING | KITCHEN HERB GARDEN
AUGUST 23 68

HANDPICK YOUR PERFECT HERBS

“My top tip is to grow what you will use. You can also consider popular choices such as basil, parsley, thyme, coriander, wild rocket, chives and oregano. These versatile herbs will complement a wide range of dishes and bring an extra touch of freshness to your cooking. They work well planted in a garden, raised bed or in pots on a windowsill.”

NURTURE WITH THE RIGHT CONDITIONS

“Understanding the specific needs of your herbs is a must for their growth. You should always grow herbs replicating the conditions from where they come from.

“Although herbs are from all around the world, most of the culinary herbs we use today come from the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and grow best with full sun, in a sheltered location with light, welldrained, moisture-retentive, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter incorporated.”

ROOT DRAINAGE IS KEY

“If you are growing in pots, to prevent waterlogged soil and root rot, ensure your pots or containers have adequate drainage holes at the bottom. You can add some stones or bits of broken pots to the bottom of the pot to ensure the drainage hole does not become blocked.

“By allowing excess water to escape, you promote healthy root development. I’d also recommend placing your herbs on a tray to stop your worktops getting dirty. For both pots and herb beds, you can also add horticultural grit to your compost to promote drainage.”

KITCHEN HERB GARDEN | OUTDOOR LIVING
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 69

WATER WITH CARE

“The most important point with watering is not to overwater because you can add water, but never take it away. Here at the herb farm we always water in the morning before lunch so that the herbs go to bed dry. This is important when growing herbs inside as excessive moisture will cause ‘damping off’, a fungal infection, and mildew.”

FEED CONSISTENTLY

“While herbs generally don’t require a lot of food they cannot just live off love and water. A little nourishment can go a long way. I recommend using a high-quality potting compost that is peat free and naturally rich in the food your plants need. Fresh compost has about six weeks of food. Therefore, I’d suggest feeding on Fridays during the growing season with an organic liquid seaweed fertiliser.”

PRUNE FOR GROWTH

“Pinch off the tips, from the top, to a growing node (where new leaves are shooting), particularly for herbs from the Lamiaceae family, like basil, mint and oregano. Through prudent pruning, you’ll stimulate your herbs to flourish, bush out and result in a fuller harvest.”

COLLECT YOUR HARVEST

“When enjoying the fruits of your labour, remember to harvest your herbs with care and precision. Similar to pruning, harvest toGrfowio a growing node to promote further growth. Avoid harvesting more than a third of the plant at once, as this can stress the herb. By harvesting properly, you’ll enjoy a continuous supply of fresh, aromatic herbs throughout the growing season.”

QUESTIONS

• How long will my property be empty for before a sale goes through?

• Can I a ord the mortgage whilst the property is empty?

ANSWER

We have been selling tenanted properties from landlords to landlords for over 12 years and it works! You the outgoing landlord is ‘happy’ as you are receiving rent up to the day of completion. The new incoming landlord is ‘happy’ as they are receiving rent from day one and the tenant is also ‘happy’ as they do not need to move out!

We have successfully completed sales, due to the specialist training on how these need to be conducted, which starts with the paperwork being compliant.

At Move On, we are helping landlords sell their tenanted properties to investors. If you would like an informal chat on your options, please email sharon@moveon.biz or ring me 01202711169.

Last issue we spoke about choosing the right colour, pattern and wallpaper for interiors and how they can significantly enhance the overall look and feel of a room. Here we continue to discuss other key factors that can guide you to make your choice.

Evaluate the natural light: The amount and quality of natural light in a room affect the perception of colour. A room with plenty of natural light can handle bolder colours and patterns, while a dimly lit room may benefit from light-coloured walls and subtle patterns.

Consider the furniture: The colour and pattern of the wallpaper and furnishings should complement each other. If you have bold furniture, consider a more subtle wallpaper, and vice versa.

You don’t need to paint every wall in a bold colour to create an impact. Consider using colourful accents, such as pillows, rugs, or artwork, to add pops of colour to a neutral space.

Remember, using colour in your home is a personal choice, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it, it just needs to be a space that you look forward to coming home to. Ultimately, the goal should be to create a space that feels comfortable and reflects your personal style then you will not tire of it.

If you would the help and advice with blending colour and pattern in your home, we are here to advisebook a consultation at our design studio, in Burley.

All springs are 100% recyclable, made by Wade Spring. All cardboard and plastic used are 100% recyclable and they have partnered with suppliers who are working towards sustainable practises to reduce their Carbon footprint.

An effective way to minimise their impact on the environment is to offer a 25 year guarantee on the timber frames. Back cushion fillings are made using 100% recyclable polyester fibre from recycled waste. The average sofa cushion uses the equivalent of 100 plastic bottles.

Where have I seen you before?!

Su ainable interior design is about creating interior environments that focus on people and planet using design principles su as balance and harmony.

At Partners in Design, we aim to partner you on your journey to a delightful home working with you through initial designs to build and project management. We work with you every step of the way to deliver beautiful and practical interiors that reflect how you want to live.

Innovation is at our core and we advocate sustainability from our suppliers. We have a dedicated team of in-house trades and craftspeople that help us in our mission for sustainability.

UPHOLSTERY

We have a brilliant upholsterer based in the South West who lovingly restores your wellloved family heirlooms and makes them look as good as new. By recovering an old armchair, you are saving money and saving good quality furniture from ending up in land fill. You could even have it -recovered in a recycled fabric from fabric makers such as Designers Guild.

FABRICS

Kirkby and Ian Mankin are two fabric makers we stock who have recently released ranges of fabrics which are zero waste and highly sustainable. The new Ian Mankin collection appropriately called “Zero Waste” utilises yarn destined for landfill to create new vibrant limited-edition fabrics. Kirkby have

introduced a gorgeous range of fabrics that are 100% recycled, using PET plastic bottles as well as wool from the fashion industry.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Using natural fibres on your window treatments is another wonderful way of living sustainably. Natural fibres, such as wools and linens, are intrinsically fire retardant which means there is no need to douse them in chemicals. They also thermoregulate themselves which means they keep the heat in throughout the winter and the heat out throughout the summer. At the end of their lifespan, they will simply biodegrade leaving no trace.

PAINT

‘Re:mix’ by Little Greene is a collection of left-over unwanted paints, reformulated into a beautiful, matt finish for interior walls and ceilings. The upcycling of these waste paints prevents as much as 60,000

litres of high-quality mineral and organic raw materials from going to waste each year. What’s or its substantially cheaper than standard paint. Partners in Design are stockists of Little Greene paint.

LIGHTING

Energy e icient lighting costs more in initial outlay but lasts longer and costs less in energy usage. Examples of this is Tala Lighting, their bulbs can last up to 30,000 hours! They are working hard to ensure that all their packaging is 100% recyclable, and they pass Zero waste to landfill.

CABINETRY

We collaborate with a talented team of carpenters, who use high quality materials to create the most beautiful bespoke cabinetry. Where possible, these materials are locally sourced, which minimises their carbon footprint. Sustainable interior design is about creating interior environments that focus on people and planet using design principles such as balance and harmony.

Embracing the great outdoors: The advantages of an outdoor kitchen

In recent years, the concept of outdoor living has gained immense popularity, and one of its most cherished aspects is the outdoor kitchen. Gone are the days when cooking and entertaining were confined to the four walls of a traditional kitchen. Today, homeowners are discovering the numerous advantages of incorporating an outdoor kitchen into their living spaces. With Interiors by Haroys and their remarkable König Outdoor range, taking the culinary experience outside has never been easier or more enticing.

First and foremost, an outdoor kitchen allows for a seamless integration of nature into our daily lives. Imagine savouring the scent of freshly grilled delicacies while basking in the warm embrace of sunlight or gazing at the stars during a cosy dinner party. The outdoor environment not only enhances the overall ambiance of any gathering but also creates unforgettable moments that are difficult to replicate indoors. When preparing meals outdoors, you become an active participant in your own gathering, engaging with guests and creating lasting memories. The relaxed atmosphere and freedom of movement provide an ideal setting for conversations, laughter, and genuine connections.

Another advantage of having an outdoor kitchen is the alleviation of indoor cooking odours and heat. During the scorching summer months, the last thing you want

is a stifling kitchen that makes the whole house feel uncomfortable. By moving your cooking activities outside, you can enjoy the cool breeze while keeping the interior of your home fresh and free from lingering food smells.

Moreover, an outdoor kitchen promotes healthier cooking. Grilling vegetables, lean meats, and seafood not only infuses them with delicious flavours but also retains their nutritional value. With the right equipment from Interiors by Haroys, such as their innovative grill systems and accessories, you can effortlessly create wholesome

and delectable meals. From built in grills to weather resistant counter tops and storage solutions, their range offers unparalleled versatility and durability. Whether you’re hosting a casual family barbecue or a sophisticated soirée, their high quality products ensure that your outdoor kitchen remains functional and stylish for years to come.

The advantages of having an outdoor kitchen are undeniable. From embracing nature’s beauty to expanding living spaces, from healthier cooking to fostering social interactions, it adds a new dimension to our culinary experiences. Interiors by Haroys’ König Outdoor range ensures that your outdoor kitchen is equipped with the finest products that combine functionality, style, and durability.

So why limit yourself to the confines of an indoor kitchen? Step outside, immerse yourself in the pleasures of outdoor living, and let the magic unfold.

Discover more by visiting our outdoor kitchen showroom display. Feel free to stop by and take a look.

How to make a small garden feel bigger

Mirrors, creating zones and carefully chosen furniture can all help, as experts tell Hannah Stephenson.

Those of us with urban gardens are used to small spaces – but how can we make our outdoor areas seem bigger?

If you want a sense of space, you may have to clear out your clutter, use vertical planting and be more mindful of the furniture you choose, say experts.

Here are some tips…

Keep it simple

“To create the illusion of space in a small garden, it’s important to see your garden through a minimalist lens,” advises Furniturebox product developer, Laura Rich.

“Often we want to pack lots of features into our gardens – be that large shrubs and bushes or bulky pergola structures – but this will overcrowd a small garden. Keep it simple by incorporating a few purposeful elements and following a zoning plan,” she adds.

“Divide your small garden into two sections: a paved or light gravelled patio and a lush green lawn framed by elevated planters.”

Use vertical planting

“Further separate these areas by placing a divider between them to gradually reveal the garden and conceal its true size. Vertical planting is a great technique for this,” Rich suggests. “Fast-growing climbers or potted plants can be added to sturdy wooden divider frames, to naturally obscure the lawn from the patio.”

Leigh Barnes of Jacksons Fencing adds: “When evaluating your outdoor space, whether it’s a garden or balcony, any vertical space is often disregarded. The façade of your home, garden walls, garages, balconies, and fence panels can all be used to curate and extend exterior spaces.

“Living garden walls are a great way to fill bare, unused areas. This contemporary and vertical look helps create a greater sense of space and adds an element of ‘wow’ factor to a garden or balcony.”

Make way for climbers

Barnes says: “Consider investing in climbing plants. Supporting these plants with trellis, a wooden pallet or fence panels will do wonders for their growth and development.

“Choosing a semi-solid fence panel will encourage plants to grow up in between the pales. Trellis or Venetian fence panels work particularly well since the spaces allow vines to gradually intertwine and climb up between the slats to form a green screen.”

Add mirrors

Use accessories such as mirrors on your vertical space on your balcony to make it seem bigger through reflection, suggests gardening author and podcaster Ellen Mary, founder of People Plants Wellbeing and cohost of The Plant Based Podcast.

Choose garden furniture carefully

“People often worry about garden furniture looking bulky or taking up too much space in a small garden, but clever outdoor furniture arrangements can actually make your garden space feel larger and provide multipurpose outdoor hosting opportunities,” says Rich.

“Compact rattan furniture is my go-to for a light and breezy sense of summer. Specifically, open-weaved tub chairs paired with a small round bistro vibe table. These types of furniture are stylish and functional, fitting neatly on a patio without overcrowding your outdoor space,” Rich adds.

“A rattan egg chair placed on the lawn – ideally under a suntrap – is an effective individual alternative for a bulky pergola. The cacoon structure surrounds the chair, making for a cosy reading nook to be placed on the lawn throughout summer.”

Change levels

“Adding levels can help to give the impression of more space,” Barnes advises. He says installing a raised decking area not only provides a useable surface for entertaining year-round but it also allows for useful garden storage to be built in.

“Dividing a garden into sections and creating hidden areas or cosy hideaways will also make a limited area feel bigger. Decorate each segment with varied plants and garden furniture to differentiate each area.”

Make it lighter

Opting for plants, shrubs, flowers and garden furniture that are brightly coloured will ensure the garden appears lighter and bigger.

“Natural light will ensure the garden feels more spacious and open. Paint the garden walls white or cream to reflect light in all directions and immediately brighten up the space,” says Barnes.

Try to let in as much sunlight as you can, he adds. If the space is edged by trees, try pruning and thinning them (safely, of course) to let more light in. Or use fencing which allows sunlight in, such as Venetian fencing, whose horizontal pales let sunlight and air through, creating a modern aesthetic.

Look at the lines

The lines within your garden can impact the illusion of space, Barnes observes. Paying attention to the direction of the paving slabs or decking and the lines within the fence panel or the decking can impact the size.

“Installing these in a certain direction or shape can trick the eye by drawing it along the length of the garden no matter how short, giving the illusion of a larger garden.”

MOTORING NEWS

Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.

ROAD TEST: CUPRA BORN – STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

Originally the sporting model within the SEAT line-up Cupra has become a brand in its own right and proving very popular with the Formentor but also the company’s first electric vehicle, the Born. Although it takes much from VW Group’s ID models the Born is very much its own car and stands well enough alone to be something rather different and rather good actually.

Prices start from £36,475 and there are two battery sizes – 58kwh and 77kwh – with the smaller battery having a predicted maximum range is 262 miles. As ever the range is dependent on many factors including the type of driving, whether it’s summer or winter and such things as wheel size. The 58kwh model has a mileage range worse scenario of probably just sub-200 miles, best scenario 225-230 miles. The higher power model has a predicted maximum range of 341 miles.

Standard equipment across all Born models includes LED lights, navigation, smartphone integration, rear view camera and adaptive cruise control. Inside there are terrifically comfortable, sporting and good looking front seats. As with all Cupra models the Born features copper highlights and has a rather low and sporting stance with a particularly good side profile.

On the road it’s not a fast car compared to some but is an enjoyable drive with even the lower powered model reaching the benchmark 62 mph in just 7.3 seconds. You can specify an optional e-Boost that lops over

half a second off that time. Whilst the Born is a firmer ride it’s far from uncomfortable and has sharp enough handling to make driving more twisting roads a bit more fun. It soaks up the bumps relatively well too.

There’s little whine from the Born’s electrics and only when at motorway speed do you notice some road and wind noise, but it’s far from intrusive. The quality of the Born is excellent and it feels classy and has a nice mix of materials which add to that feeling. The main central display is nice and clear and although the driver display is small it has excellent clarity.

The one thing that lets everything down in an otherwise super interior is a lack of proper buttons. Touchscreen mania is at its height in VAG products and some of the touch sensitive controls on the steering wheel of the Born seem ultra-easy to catch and inadvertently activate.

A GLIMPSE OF BENTLEY’S FUTURE DESIGN

The Batur is more than just a glimpse of Bentley’s future design. It will be a significant step towards the way future Bentleys will be made, using the planet-friendly materials and techniques needed for a more sustainable vision of luxury car manufacture.

For Mulliner customers, the ability to specify bespoke colours, materials and finishes is of the highest priority and the Batur demonstrates even further Bentley’s ability to use unique combinations of colour and materiality.

Carbon fibre is known for its incredible balance of strength with low weight – but it is not a sustainable material. New, natural alternatives to carbon fibre are now possible using high-performance composites made from flax - a sustainable ‘super-fibre’. Immensely strong and incredibly light, this material has proved suitable for use

throughout the Batur, from the exterior body kit to the internal hard surfaces.

Where leather is used, it will be sustainably sourced, thanks to a production process that uses less water and aldehyde than traditional tanning. There will also be the option to select traceable, low-CO2 leather – something that is only possible today in the low volumes involved in coachbuilding. Sustainable, leather-like textiles made from by-products of the coffee roasting process can even be selected, as can carpets made from recycled yarn.

A wealth of innovative new finishes are available for the Batur. From hallmarked 18-karat yellow gold crafted using additive manufacturing, to aerospace-inspired titanium, and the composites and textiles detailed above, choices like these only add to the immense range of leathers, woods and other options.

W.O. Bentley built the first car to bear his name in 1919. Immediately, his creations were in high demand – but he was an engineer, first and foremost. He made engines. He would affix them to a chassis, with wheels and a transmission system. The resulting machines were certainly cars – but to turn them into luxurious recreational vehicles, streamlined racing cars, or both, the services of a coachbuilder were required.

From the Roaring Twenties onwards, Mulliner built bespoke bodies and cabins for some of the world’s most iconic Bentleys, including the famous R-Type Continental of 1952. Today, Mulliner operates as Bentley’s personal commissioning division, delivering everything from bespoke modifications to coachbuilt cars.

ROAD TEST: SKODA KAMIQ - IT’S MADE STYLE AFFORDABLE

Naming your car after a word meaning ‘Something that fits perfectly’ (in the language of the Inuit people) is quite a bold move, but not one Skoda needed to fear with their Kamiq. The Kamiq feels classier than its equivalent VAG stablemates. There’s little in the way of cheaper finishes inside or out and its smoother more streamlined design makes it a stand out compared to other compact SUVs.

Four trim levels from a low price starting block of just £22,780 see all models having LED lights, cruise control, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth, air conditioning and powered and heated door mirrors. There are two engine options of 1.0-Litre and 1.5-litre with three power outputs and both manual and automatic gears. Nice, typically Skoda, features include hidden rubber strips that automatically pop out as you open the doors to protect their edges, an umbrella in the door and an ice scraper in the fuel filler cap. Most versions even have a removable, rechargeable torch that lives in the boot.

My particular test model was the top-ofthe-range Monte Carlo with 1.5-litre, 150PS engine and 6-speed manual gearbox. The finishing touch was the rather vibrant Phoenix Orange metallic paintwork which in itself was actually quite suited to the Kamiq, it did clash somewhat with the red flashes on the seats though! Colour clashes apart the Kamiq drew lots of admiring glances, which is quite a feat nowadays when so many modern cars are only different because of the badges they wear.

Standard fare on the Monte Carlo includes everything from navigation and gesture control to a full panoramic glass roof and the most stylish and comfortable sports seats you’re ever likely to find. Priced at £26,805 my car’s option list bumped the price to £28,370 but that did include over £1k for a detachable tow bar and a similar figure for the vibrant paint finish.

On the road the Monte Carlo’s 1.5-litre TSi power plant is a spirited performer with the benchmark 62 mph passing by in whisker over 8 seconds. It smooths bumps with aplomb and the handling is sharp enough to prove entertaining, possibly helped by the fact it isn’t the highest riding SUV. That said it’s not meant to be a Land Rover substitute, it’s much more of an all-rounder.

Skoda have really hit on a styling success with their new models and it’s a look that’s as sharp as it is subtle. With Kamiq it’s made style affordable.

ROAD TEST: TOYOTA COROLLA TOURING SPORTS - THE PERFECT CHOICE?

For many people, especially of a certain age, mention estate cars and Volvo comes to mind, estates that were favoured by antique dealers everywhere. Look for a large estate now and to be honest you’ll struggle. We’ve moved to ‘lifestyle’ estates which are colloquially known as Tourers, smaller load capacity but arguably more stylish and better handling than the estate barges of old.

One of the sleekest and most affordable estates, sorry tourers, is Toyota’s Corolla Touring Sports. Carrying their very wellproven hybrid technology, still a much more all-round and useable proposition than an EV, the Corolla may not be the

most exciting means of transport, but as a package it pretty much does everything you could want of a car. Lots of equipment, affordable running costs and very well bolted together. It feels like a car that will still be running and looking good in 20 years-time.

Prices start from £31,560 with four trim levels and two engine options – 1.8 or 2.0-litre petrol hybrid. Standard fare on the entry level model provides everything from front and rear parking sensors and auto lights to smart phone connectivity and dual zone air conditioning.

My test model was the Design trim, second up in the range, which adds keyless entry and start, power tailgate, privacy glass, power fold door mirrors and auto dimming rear view mirrors to its standard equipment.

One of the first things to say about the car is its apparent low stance, it’s looks very low yet isn’t compared to other cars of a similar type. So Toyota’s stylists obviously know a thing or two about sleek design!

Inside it looks and feels well assembled and the quality puts some rivals of similar price in the shade. You still get the bolt-oniPad look of so many cars but that apart there’s a pleasing normality with a standard automatic gear shift lever, buttons (hurrah!) and decent functionality to the touch screen.

As with anything Toyota the Corolla is a smooth and refined drive, push the throttle too enthusiastically though and as is usual with a CVT transmission it hangs onto high engine revs meaning it’s rather vocal. Progressive rather than sudden acceleration is the order of the day.

If you’re looking for a car that’s got more practicality than a hatchback, but still handles as capably, looks good and is superbly well built, then the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Touring might just be the perfect choice.

You can buy any of the FUC leggings and a FUC T-shirt for £25 (this is a bargain as normally the clothing would be £55 on its own). Once purchased this enables you to book 12 sessions within 30 days. These sessions include all of the lady classes we run per week; Wednesday at 6pm, Friday at 5:30pm and Sunday at 10am.

It also includes access to Wednesday and Friday Mixed Thai Boxing classes at 9:30am and our Wednesday morning Bootcamp at 6:30am and Saturday at 12pm (which is an hour and a half class – both mixed).

At Wassmuffin we are lucky enough to be running three ladies classes a week which are incredibly popular with our members. Two are run by the incredible Isa who joined us six years ago to ‘become fitter’ but has since not only become part of our fight team but is also a knowledgeable and invaluable coach. Her classes are energetic and technical but also basic enough for beginners to join, even if you don’t have any previous experience in Thai boxing. Then we have Alex and Gemma teaching our bootcamp classes. Alex with a wealth of experience and Gemma, having joined us

six years ago mainly wanting to lose some baby weight, is now teaching for us. Both are invaluable members of our team.

You will have me, Lottie, for the Sunday ladies class and the two morning mixed classes. I have been teaching for over 10 years and love it. The classes are high energy fun with basics but also technical too, so a real mixed bag!

You will have 30 days to pick which classes suit your lifestyle. So that’s 28 sessions per month that we run for you to pick your 12 sessions from. We are flexible so you can be!

The feed back at Wassmuffin’s is always incredible and we have amazing members and clients who are supportive and fun. The main comment we hear is; “we are like one big family”, and one you will love being part of. Make the move today – you won’t regret it! And you’ll even have some new gym kit to start your sessions in. FUC is a 5 star clothing brand with a big story behind it. It’s a win win situation.

Pinch of Nom: Healthy eating doesn’t have to cost the earth

Kate and Kay Allinson talk clashing personalities, food inflation and listening to their audience

Despite holding the record for the secondfastest-selling non-fiction book in the UK since records began, Kate and Kay Allinson – the brains behind Pinch of Nom – are relatively private people.

They don’t do many interviews and you won’t see them whipping up a storm on daytime cooking shows, yet the duo seem remarkably comfortable fielding questions about their latest cookbook, Pinch Of Nom: Budget.

Kate, 52, is the softer-spoken of the two –she’s a trained chef – while Kay, 37, is more outgoing and talkative. The two have been together for 18 years and married for two.

Their clashing personalities might come as a surprise, but they make it work – for example, by having two freezers.

“One is my freezer, one is Kate’s – there’s a big difference between the two of them,” Kay says matter-of-factly.

“I’ve got ADHD, so she has to put up with a lot. Kate’s the tidy, organised one – if I put it this way, if I’m putting the food shopping away, she’s like, ‘You’re not putting the food shopping away, I’m putting it away, because it’ll go away in some sort of order’.”

Kay works with “lots of noise, lots of mess, lots of creativity, disorganisation”, she admits. “And Kate is the polar opposite –

everything has to be quiet, everything has to be neat and tidy. I think it works because we complement each other in different ways.

“You [she says to Kate] make sure I actually get through the day without harming myself, and I give you the ideas – so it works.”

The two have made an empire with their healthy cookbooks. The first Pinch Of Nom cookbook came out in 2019 and sold 210,506 copies in the first week – the only non-fiction title to outstrip that is Spare by the Duke of

Sussex. Their fanbase is loyal, and they have 1.2 million followers on Instagram – but don’t call them diet books (Kay doesn’t use the d-word, saying: “I hate it”.)

Now, the duo are releasing their first book specifically geared towards walletfriendly recipes – which felt like a natural progression. “Most of the recipes we’ve ever come up with, one of the main goals –apart from it being actual food you want to eat, because that always helps when you’re making a recipe book – is they’re easy to make, but also that they don’t break the bank,” Kay says.

Kate adds to that thought: “Given our audience from day one, our audience has always been very family orientated.”

“And running a family is expensive enough, especially at the minute – thank you Brexit,” Kay sighs. “Food inflation is not fun for anyone at the minute – it’s ridiculous out there, it’s crazy. The amount of people that rely on food banks – food poverty is a really big issue.”

While there are no price guarantees with their recipes, most dishes come to under £2 to make and many cost even less –busting the misconception that healthy eating is expensive. “Whatever it is, you can make it expensive – there’s ways and means to do things,” Kay says.

Pinch of Nom: Budget by Kate and Kay Allinson (Bluebird, £17.99) | Bluebird/PA

“If you want to do healthy food organically, it’s not going to come cheap. If you want to go to Daylesford Organic for your food, that’s fine. But most real people that live on a day-to-day basis will shop at one of the big four supermarkets or the big two discounters. We all know who they are. And we want people to be able to buy all the recipes and the ingredients in one place and not have to traipse around everywhere.

“We want to make it as easy as possible –people are time-poor. Maintaining a family and making sure everyone is fed and looked after is hard enough – the last thing you need is to traipse around the big posh supermarket trying to find weird ingredients.”

This could be the couple’s secret to success – they’re refreshingly normal, and even talk about their own “bumpy journey” with healthy eating. “We said last week, we’re going to meal plan all week – what didn’t we do? We didn’t get round to cooking the meals, because we’re busy doing other stuff – because that always happens,” Kay says – but all wasn’t lost, because they used their number one tip for keeping healthy and saving money: the freezer.

“It’s always handy to have something in the freezer or in the fridge that on that day when you come home from work and you cannot be arsed – everyone has that day or that week. To be fair, it’s usually a couple of days,” says Kay.

“Getting something out of the freezer that you know is going to taste good, you only have to heat it up – you don’t have to make it. Just having that reassurance that you can fall back on it.”

Kate and Kay estimate there are around 3,000 Pinch of Nom recipes, created by themselves and their team. With such a vast number, do they ever get writer’s block?

“We do get stuck for inspiration, quite often,” Kate admits – and in those scenarios, their first port of call is going to the Facebook group “and look to see what people want”.

Kay jumps in: “We’ll ask them what they want to see. I used to post every week in the Facebook group without fail, ‘OK, tell us what dishes you want. What do you want a Nom version of?’

“Don’t get me wrong, there were some ridiculous requests – there is no way the chocolate cake from Matilda was ever going to be Nommable, that is just not going to

happen. As much as I would love to be a magician and I would love for that to be real.”

Other suggestions are a bit more feasible – and they’ve seen a big rise in demand for veggie recipes. “A lot of people – we’re the same, it’s not that we don’t like meat, but we’ve made a conscious choice to eat less meat, mainly because of cost. Meat costs a fortune, and if you can get your protein from plants, then yay – it’s a good thing,” Kay says.

“So we’ve had an awful lot of veggies recently, or people just wanting to cut down on meat – and I’m assuming it’s because it’s friggin’ expensive.”

Another trend that will never go away?

“We still get loads of fakeaway requests,” Kay says. “Fakeaways are never going to disappear, ever.”

Kay adds: “We like to give people a decent amount of stuff that isn’t quite as calorific as it would ordinarily be, but enough so you have something to look forward to in the week. Everyone needs a bit of a treat, because it’s no fun – when people think of diets, they think of lettuce. I do, and I’m like – it’s a bit boring. Sod that.”

4. Pour the mixture into the silicone muffin tin, dividing it evenly between the twelve holes. Add half a raspberry to the top of each brownie. Sprinkle over the biscuit and chocolate pieces.

5. Place in the oven and bake for eight to 10 minutes until slightly risen and set.

6. Leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack. Serve.

INGREDIENTS

Low-calorie cooking spray

2 onions, peeled and finely diced

2 carrots, peeled and diced

500g 5%-fat minced beef

4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

2tsp mild chilli powder

1tsp ground cumin

1tsp dried oregano

2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes

2 peppers, any colour, deseeded and diced

2tbsp tomato puree

2tbsp Henderson’s Relish

600ml beef stock (2 beef stock cubes dissolved in 600ml boiling water)

300g dried macaroni

1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed

180g reduced-fat mature Cheddar, grated

Small handful of fresh coriander, chopped (optional)

1. Spray a large saucepan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onions and carrots and sauté for five minutes until softened.

2. Add the mince and cook for a further five minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up any lumps, until the mince is no longer pink.

3. Add the garlic, chilli powder, cumin and oregano and stir in for one minute until the spices become fragrant. Add the chopped tomatoes, peppers, tomato puree, Henderson’s Relish and stock, and bring to the boil.

4. Turn down the heat to medium-low, cover with a tight-fitting lid and simmer for 20 minutes, until the carrots are soft.

5. Add the macaroni to the pan, stir well and replace the lid. Allow to cook for a further 10–12 minutes, until the pasta is just cooked.

6. Stir in the beans and cheese, reserving a little cheese to garnish if you wish, allowing two minutes for the beans to heat through and the cheese to melt.

7. Stir in the coriander, if using, and serve!

4 garlic cloves, peeled

30g Parmesan cheese, finely grated Juice of 1 lemon

Pesto green bean spaghetti

1. Add the spaghetti and new potatoes to a large saucepan of boiling water. Cook for eight minutes until the potatoes and spaghetti are nearly done. Add the green beans and cook for another four minutes.

2. While the spaghetti is cooking, add the basil, garlic, Parmesan cheese and lemon juice to a food processor. Blitz until smooth.

3. Once the spaghetti, potatoes and green beans are cooked, drain (reserving a little of the cooking water).

4. Add the spaghetti, potato and green beans back to the pan and pour over the pesto mixture. Add one tablespoon of the reserved pasta water, stir and add a few extra tablespoons of water as needed (we added three tablespoons of the reserved pasta water to coat our pasta, but it depends on how thick your pesto is. Start with one tablespoon and go from there). The pesto should coat each spaghetti strand. Serve.

Support your local independent restaurants; They need you!

In bygone years, the restaurant scene in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole flourished with an array of diverse, independent eateries. These local gems contribute to the vibrant culinary landscape of the region, providing unique flavours and dining experiences. However, in the face of challenging times, these independent restaurants are disappearing and they need your support more than ever. As the owner of the Fired Up Collective and the campaign group The Wonky Table, I’m passionate about raising awareness about the importance of supporting local businesses - they are the lifeblood of the local economy.

Independent restaurants offer something a chain can’t – soul, they showcase creativity and passion and welcome you with open arms – not just begrudgingly serve you. From authentic Thai cuisine to Pan-african, our establishments create flavours that cannot be replicated elsewhere – and especially not in a chain restaurant! They contribute significantly to the local economy by providing employment opportunities and supporting other local suppliers. By supporting them, you are helping maintain a community – and these businesses need you more than ever.

So next time you eat out, think, make it a point of visiting your favourite independent restaurant. Share your dining experiences on social media, leave positive reviews,

and recommend these establishments to friends and family. Word-of-mouth is a powerful tool that can attract new customers and ensure the longevity of local restaurants. Many independent restaurants organise special events, such as wine tastings, themed dinners, or live music nights. By participating in these events, you not only have a great time but also support the restaurant’s efforts to engage the community. Collaborate and build partnerships with these local restaurants as they are the ones that offer up charity prizes for School raffles, help support local charities and employ you’re 16 year old in their first job.

The local independent restaurants in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole are the heart and soul of our communities. By supporting them, we not only savour exceptional flavours and experiences but also contribute to the economic and cultural fabric of our towns. Each visit, recommendation, or social media post can make a real difference in ensuring their survival.

Let’s join hands and rally behind these cherished establishments, showing them that we value and appreciate their presence. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the local dining scene and preserve what at the end of the day is something you will really miss when they are gone.

So next time you eat, eat local and eat independent! It’s not as easy as you would think… look into the place you’re eating at before you go, I bet you’ll find one of your favourite ‘local venues’ is actually in fact a well-hidden chain.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Interview with Gareth Snook, cast in the role of Willy Wonka.

The much-anticipated UK and Ireland tour of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical will open its gates at Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from 16 August - 3 September.

Leading the cast in the extraordinary role of Willy Wonka will be West End star Gareth Snook. Featuring memorable songs from the iconic 1970s film including ‘The Candy Man’ and ‘Pure Imagination’ as well as a host of new numbers, this sensational musical is choc-full of fantastical treats to indulge the senses, bringing audiences to a world of pure imagination.

We sat down with Gareth to find out more about his new musical adventure and how Roald Dahl’s famed character is being brought to life on stage.

Alongside brilliant songs from the film, the musical features a score by the multi award-winning composer and lyricist of Hairspray and Mary Poppins Returns, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. How would you describe the soundtrack?

There’s so many nods to different musical genres from pop to heartfelt ballads and big dancing theatrical numbers. Wonka also has a brilliant patter song at the top of Act 2. It really has got something for everyone.

WHAT’S ON | MAYFLOWER THEATRE
AUGUST 23 122

The story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was first published in 1964. Why do you think the magic of the factory and this fantastical journey had stood the test of time?

All of the characters, from Wonka to Charlie and all the children, have been written so vividly that they’re enticing. They all come from such different backgrounds so kids can relate to them and their families. Although they are all in some ways spoilt and excessive, and are allowed to be by their parents, kids can relate to this and find the enjoyment in it, especially when they get their just desserts. The story really has got everything… and who doesn’t like chocolate!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has seen numerous film and stage adaptations. Were you a fan of the story growing up?

Bizarrely enough I came to Roald Dahl’s work later in life having not grown up with it. As an adult I can appreciate the intricacies of his work but wish I had come to his world of imagination much earlier – it really is fabulous!

Many people will have their own interpretation of Willy Wonka, from having read the books to seeing Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp on screen. How have you approached the character and put your own spin on him?

I watched the films when they came out, and I’ve revisited them again for research purposes, but I approached my interpretation with an open mind. Wonka is a mercurial character. He’s everything you want him to be, which is great fun to play, despite his cynicism and how sinister he is at times. You might say he’s as layered as a gobstopper!

What character were you most like when you were younger?

Wonka, of course. You only have to talk to our director James Brining, who said, ‘I don’t know where Wonka starts and you end.’ I do have a strange affinity with the character. I don’t know whether that’s a good or bad thing! He’s a complex character, but I do understand his frustrations and disappointments.

You’ve had an impressive stage career from The Phantom of the Opera to Les Miserables and Made in Dagenham. What are you most looking forward to about touring the UK and Ireland with this production?

I’ve spent so much time in London working, so I’m looking forward to revisiting the cities and towns across the countries. I haven’t toured for 20-years. The last time I toured was when I played Harold in The Full Monty, which was a blast.

What do you hope audiences take away from this new production?

I hope audiences leave with a tear in the eye and a big smile on their face. I think the production is very moving, especially towards the end, and it is also great fun. I’d love to sit out and watch it myself!

Is there a piece of advice you’ve received or that you would pass on to anyone hoping to go into the creative industry?

You’ve got to put in the hard work, because it is hard work. You’ve got to be prepared to commit yourself 100% because the industry is notoriously difficult for actors or any other person working in theatre. If someone loves acting and they feel they can’t do anything else and that’s all they want to do, then they’re already halfway there.
