COMPLETING THREE PEAKS
CHALLENGE IN MEMORY OF COLLEAGUE
After months of gruelling training across the Dorset coast, a team of Spencers colleagues from across their 5 sales o ices have completed the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the British Heart Foundation in memory of colleague and friend, Justin Hannam, who died in September 2022 after his heart failed.
On Friday 8 September, the Spencers team began climbing the three highest mountains in the UK (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon), completing the challenge the next day on Saturday 9 September, a year to the day since Justin’s passing and on what would have been his 53rd birthday. Thanks to the generosity of their donors, Spencers has raised over £27,000, including gift aid, for the British Heart Foundation.
Rob Batten, Director and Co-founder, Spencers, commented: “We lost our much loved colleague and friend so suddenly and so sadly last September. Justin loved life and, with his lovely family, certainly lived it to the full. It has been an honour for our team to contribute positively in his memory by raising much needed funds for the British Heart Foundation.”
“The challenge was an extremely tough one, climbing through the heatwave in temperatures above 25 degrees, but I could not be more proud of this exceptional team. The sheer determination by everyone involved to complete this challenge has been so inspiring. We have smashed through our target to raise £20,000 for the British Heart Foundation and have just broken the £27,000 mark with donations still coming in. A huge thank you to all who have supported us in so many ways.”

Experience superior heating and service
Superior Fires is a gas and electric fire shop located in Christchurch, Dorset — not far from the beach and just a few minutes away from the A338. This shop has been around long enough to see the transition from wood burners to gas stoves, to the newest trend of LED electric fires that have been gaining in popularity and become their best-selling product.
We spoke with James Cooper, Sales Executive of Superior Fires, to get a pulse on the heating industry and see what new products they have for the upcoming heating season.

Continuing to build a strong reputation
Over the last few years British Fires has become a ‘hot item’ in the Superior Fires showroom. The attention to detail in the design and manufacturing of each product is second to none. From their stoves to suites and the original New Forest 1200 each has garnered respect and admiration in home and heating related industries. British Fires continues to develop new products to expand their range and market reach. It is important to point out that much of their success is down to word of mouth which has built a reputation that can be trusted. So, seeing British Fires remaining a staple of the Superior Fires showroom should come as no surprise.
With the continued success of the British Fires products within the showroom they have been consistently updating and adding to the curated Electric section. There have been some exciting new products released this year and are getting ready to make their first deliveries of those electric fires.
James, from the Superior Showroom says, “An electric fire that is sure to be a ‘home run’ is the new Knightwood LED.” It is named after the lone 500+ year old Knightwood Oak tree located in the New Forest. The Knightwood electric fire mimics the oak tree with a prominent, portrait orientation and a viewing port nearly 1160mm tall and 717mm wide. It is perfect for customers who want to make a real statement in any living space. Deluxe Real Logs also come as standard here, so all customers get the authentic fireplace experience. “Installation, as with all our inset products, is simple and only requires a flat wall with enough internal depth or, a false chimney breast can be built to house the unit” exclaims James. “Come see the Knightwood now in our showroom and experience a true centrepiece.”
Another fire that has gone under lots of work behind the scenes and is now in the showroom is the Hinton Cast Iron Stove. It has the look and feel of a genuine wood burning stove but, as they say in Christchurch,
SUPERIOR FIRES | INTERIORS
HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 19
‘You won’t believe it’s electric.’ Currently on display is the Black Cast Iron stove equipped with their bespoke Deluxe Real Logs that genuinely look the part in this setup. The heater is located at the bottom of the stove, so it is safe to operate underneath any artwork or televisions. Other colour options will be available in 2024.
Other items have received minor updates, such as the New Forest 2400 that now has a Deluxe Real Log fuel bed along with improved downlighting across the entire width of the fire. This fire simply looking amazing in the media wall installation. A must see for customers who want to do it big!
The beauty of these fires is not just the looks themselves but, that they can be operated for mere pennies a day with the just the LED flame-effect in operation. Meaning, the heating is a separate operation from the flame and lighting options controlled via the remote handset. You can enjoy the ambiance of award-winning LED flameeffects all year-round.
Utility bill friendly heating
While British Fires remains a focus for the Superior showroom the other options of flueless gas fires and traditional inset fires must not be overlooked. In a time of uncertainty with regards to heating costs the desire to have efficient heating is more important than ever.

WHAT’S ‘FINANCIALLY FAIR’ IN A DIVORCE?
HOW CAN SOMEONE MAKE FAIR FINANCIAL DECISIONS WHEN SEPARATING FROM THEIR PARTNER?
In this article Sara Gilak, solicitor at Bournemouth law firm Dutton Gregory Solicitors, reveals why it’s vital to receive professional advice early on to avoid mistakes, ensure a fair settlement, and submit a Consent Order to make any agreements final and binding.
What are the most common financial issues for a couple seeking a divorce?
In my experience, there are usually three crucial financial questions to consider when a couple is looking to part ways.
1. What will happen to the family home?
It’s worth seeking professional advice to understand the ramifications of any course of action, before deciding to move out of the family home. The sale of a family home can be immediate or delayed until the children are older, but the capital should be divided fairly, with the main consideration being to ensure each party can meet their housing needs.
2. Is there a need for ongoing financial support?
If for example, one party earns significantly more than the other, there needs to be a discussion about whether there should be spousal maintenance payments, and if so, how much and for how long?
3. How will any pensions be divided?
Pensions accrued during the marriage are matrimonial assets, so it’s important to understand what provision each party has and how they could be shared.
What is a fair financial settlement in a divorce?
This varies from couple to couple and depends on their circumstances, which is why it’s best to seek legal advice to help recognise what is a just financial settlement.
After a thorough evaluation of all the couple’s financial resources and gathering relevant evidence to make a financial resolution as smooth as possible, guided negotiations can be effective in keeping relations amicable and minimising the disruption to a family.
Q: How are financial settlements reached when getting a divorce?
A: Wherever possible, couples are encouraged to seek settlement outside of the Court. Court proceedings can entail a higher level of risk, as the verdict is open to a judge’s discretion. They are also costly and time-consuming. Instead, couples can choose to act through their solicitors or try mediation. As a Collaborative Lawyer, I’m also able to hold open-table discussions, to help reach an agreement quickly. No matter the resolution method chosen, it’s best to seek advice from a family law specialist as soon as possible to fully understand the implications of any decisions and avoid complications.
Do you need a solicitor for a “No Fault Divorce?”
While you can apply for No Fault Divorce without the help of a solicitor, there are still important decisions to make regarding childcare, property and finances.
Few people realise that if a Consent Order is not prepared and approved by the Court, then financial claims can remain open even after the divorce is completed. In this situation, an individual could attempt to claim the financial gains of a former spouse in the future.
Once a Consent Order is made, there are only very limited circumstances where it can be changed. For this reason, and to ensure long-term financial security for your family, it’s best to seek legal advice even when applying for a No Fault Divorce.
The sooner you consult a solicitor, the better the chances are of settling your finances fairly and avoiding any complications, and it means that your family can focus on the future.

How to style your home like a professional
From mood boards to triangle formation, a top interior stylist shares her insider tips.
Thinking about giving your home a mini makeover? When it comes to creating your own personal style, there are a few principles which come in super handy when you’re about to embark on a new project… and take your first foray into the world of interior design.
“It’s not rocket science that if you wake up in a home or room you love, which makes you feel happy and calm and brings a smile to your face, then you will start your day with a more positive mindset,” Lucy Gough writes in her new book, The Home Style Handbook.
“And it doesn’t have to cost the earth either. Paint, wallpaper, upcycling, second-hand furniture, along with a new cushion or two, can go a long way in transforming your home,” she suggests.

OCTOBER 23 26
Currently living in Sydney, Australia, and head stylist at Home Beautiful magazine, Gough says she feels it’s important as a stylist and freelance creative director to be able to turn your hand to any aesthetic a client asks of you. “Us stylists need to be truly versatile!” enthuses Gough.
Here, she shares her insider tips on how to style your home like it is second nature, which is sure to put you in a positive frame of mind…
Make a mood board
“All wonderful interiors schemes are pulled together in the beginning stages using a mood board,” says Gough.
“Not only are they important in helping pull together all your creative thoughts and ideas,” she continues. “But they are fun to make and a great mindful task for you to play around with at the beginning of the project, to make sure you get it right first time.”
Create continuity of colour
“If you can decide on your colour and texture palette before you embark on picking up a paintbrush, your home will feel cohesive,” notes Gough. “And might trick people into thinking a professional has helped you!”
A thread of colour throughout your home is so important for it to feel like you have considered your ideas before implementing them, she adds.
Tell a story
Not only should you consider your palette but also think about a theme, says Gough. “Now, I’m not talking about a Disney theme here! I mean a thread forming around your love of antiques, family treasures, a dark palette or coastal look for example.
“Something that makes your heart sing when you walk in your home!”
Then add colours you love and bring these together with surface samples and foliage, she writes in The Home Style Handbook. If you decide to go with two or more bold colours, Gough says to add some soft tones in between to give them space to breathe.

Style your space in sections
“I suggest approaching your room as a series of vignettes,” encourages Gough.
“Sometimes, if you’re not a professional it can be overwhelming to think about styling a whole room at a time. Instead, think of each room as a series of smaller spaces.
“Look through your phone screen and break it down into smaller photographable corners and sections,” advises Gough. “For example, style the sofa area first then the TV unit area second, and the corner with the armchair and mirror third.”
And when it comes to the finishing touches, such as styling your succulents, she writes: “Notice how the objects and plants on the cabinet (pictured) are higher in the top left and then go down at an angle to the bottom right.”
Visualise a triangle formation
“When I am styling bookshelves, I like to style using a visual triangle formation,” says Gough. “I never style with symmetry – although there is nothing wrong with doing so.”
She continues: “I prefer the more relaxed look and find creating triangular shapes between items helps aesthetically. And don’t pack things in too tightly,” says Gough. “You should give things room to breathe!”

DARLING LEAVE A LIGHT ON FOR ME
Autumn has arrived - the forest leaves are turning beautiful shades of coppers and golds, colours which are currently mimicked in the shop – yes you can tell, I love Autumn! I really embrace the thought of cosying up, gentle mood lighting, a soft throw and a good book in front of the fire.
With the nights drawing in at 4pm many of us leave home in the dark and arrive home in the dark. Coming home to a warm embracing light is so much nicer than returning to a dark, soulless house and equally looks less tempting to unwanted opportunists from the outside.
So it’s time to set the lights on timers - In this day and age many people have ‘Smart’ devices to control their homes but I am equally happy with a good old fashioned timer, to control my lamps, which work just as well. Add an LED bulb and a cotton or linen shade to compliment your colour pallet and you have beautiful, efficient lighting, to welcome you home.
Individual lamps are a key ingredient in the styling and the character of our homes. We have a large selection of organically shaped and textured lamps in store for you to choose from. Help is at hand if you need advice on colours and textures.

How to make the most of your Halloween pumpkin, so it doesn’t go to waste
Carving it may be fun, but there’s a lot you can make from a pumpkin in the kitchen. Imy Brighty-Potts finds out more.
It’s that time of year again, where kids and grown-ups alike start carving up pumpkins for Halloween. As wonderful as a jack-o’lantern looks, however, it can create an awful lot of waste. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way.
Vidushi Binani is co-founder and owner of Café Volonté, a holistic eatery in London. She explains the health benefits of the seasonal veg: “Pumpkins come into season in autumn, from late September to the end of November. It’s best to eat them when they’re in season, as the produce will be of the best quality and highest nutrition value at the time.
“Pumpkins are full of beta carotene, which our bodies turn into vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for building and boosting immunity, especially in the autumn, when the flu is also in season! Pumpkins contain vitamin C, as well, which will further boost immunity and ability to fight infections. Both of these vitamins also help to keep our skin healthy, which is important in the dry, colder months.”

You may not be aware you can eat every part of the pumpkin. “We traditionally remove the skin and seeds, and throw them away as they’re not particularly pleasant to eat. But if cooked well, the skin is a great source of fibre, antioxidants, and the seeds are also high in magnesium,” says Binani.
Zwilling and Staub chef, Paul Bough, agrees we need to be less wasteful. “Although the pumpkin is first and foremost edible, 22.2 million pumpkins will be uneaten this year as people throw away their spooky carved designs after Halloween. And reducing food waste and saving money is more important than ever.”
So, how can you use yours?
For the flesh
Binani reveals you can use the flesh to make a puree: “Bake the pumpkin until it is soft, and blend just the flesh until smooth in a food processor. The puree can be used in baking sweet and savoury dishes.”
Perhaps add it as a topping to pancakes with cinnamon, add it to a pie, pop it in a crumble, or make a pumpkin seeded loaf with it.
“For those with a sweet tooth, pumpkin bread is the new banana bread! Mixing the puree with warming spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, will produce a bake that is full of flavour – and will be a welcome treat on cold autumn and winter evenings,” says Bough.
“You can also add some vegetable stock, herbs and spices to the puree and cook in a pot to make a hearty pumpkin soup,” suggests Binani. “You can also pickle the flesh of a pumpkin. Pickled fruit and veg can be stored for longer in air-tight jars, and used to add tang and punch to any meal. For example, in a sandwich or topping on a salad.” BELOW

For the skin
Leave the skin on and get cooking.
“Roasted pumpkin is a great way to eat all of it. Chop it up into small or medium chunks, with the skin on, and season with some olive oil, maple syrup, thyme, paprika and salt, and roast in the oven on a high heat for 25-30 minutes. They have a great texture and flavour, and the skin is soft enough to eat. It would go very well added into a salad or eaten as a side with a meal,” says Binani.
Don’t like the skin? “Don’t let the exterior of the pumpkin go to waste – compost it, leave in your garden and enjoy some wildlife visitors,” says Bough.
For the seeds
As far as snacks go, seeds are a great source of protein and are delicious.
“The seeds can be dried and roasted in the oven. Seasoned with some salt and paprika, they make a great crunchy snack or salad topping,” Binani says.

Embracing the future: Interior trends for 2024
A er vis ing suppliers in Germany and Italy over the course of September at the annual House fairs – where brand-new produ s are laun ed and new trends are set in motion – Matthew Morris, Mana ng & Creative Dire or at Studio 30 Interiors ltd, shares w h us upcoming trends set to be popular in 2024.
As we step into 2024, the world of interior design is abuzz with exciting new trends that are already in motion, reshaping the way we view our living spaces. From the revival of pastel colours to the continued dominance of dark and moody tones, and the intriguing blend of metallic finishes with natural colour palettes, the interior landscape promises to be both diverse and captivating. Our recent visit to the International House Fairs in September has shed light on these evolving trends, and we’re here to share the highlights.
The resurgence of pastel colours
One of the most enchanting trends making a comeback in 2024 is the revival of pastel colours. These soft, muted hues are making their way back into our homes, adding a touch of elegance and serenity. Pastels are a perfect choice for those looking to infuse
a sense of tranquillity and sophistication into their living spaces. From soothing blues and gentle pinks to serene greens and muted lavenders, pastels are set to grace our walls, furniture, and decor items.
Contrasting textures: Wood e ect laminates and veneered woods
In the world of materials, the year 2024 will witness a striking interplay of contrasting textures. Wood e ect laminates and veneered woods are emerging as strong contenders in interior design. The juxtaposition of pastel colours with the warmth of wood textures creates a harmonious blend of contemporary and natural elements. This trend adds depth and character to interiors, making them feel inviting and connected to nature.

Dark and moody tones still reign supreme While pastels are making a remarkable return, it’s important to note that dark and moody tones are far from being overshadowed. In fact, these dramatic hues continue to hold a prominent place in the world of luxurious interiors. Particularly in the German and Italian markets, deep, rich colours like charcoal, midnight blue, and forest green remain at the forefront. They infuse spaces with an opulent and intimate ambiance, perfect for creating a sense of luxury and exclusivity.
Metallic and metal lacquered finishes meet natural colour palettes
2024 brings an exciting fusion of the old and the new with the use of metallic and metal lacquered finishes against natural colour palettes. The juxtaposition of shimmering metallics with earthy tones creates a captivating contrast that elevates the overall aesthetic of interiors. Whether it’s brushed gold accents in a rusticthemed room or sleek silver finishes against a backdrop of muted browns and greens, this trend o ers a refreshing take on modern design.
The unifying trend
What unites these diverse trends for 2024 is the emphasis on creating harmonious, balanced spaces. Whether you’re drawn to the soft allure of pastels, the contrasting textures of wood, the drama of dark tones, or the blending of metallic finishes with natural hues, the goal is to craft interiors that resonate with individuality and comfort.
As we move forward into the year 2024, interior design continues to be a dynamic and ever-evolving field. The trends we’ve explored here are not only visually captivating but also o er opportunities for personal expression and creativity. Whether you’re redesigning your home or simply seeking inspiration, these trends provide a glimpse into the exciting possibilities that await in the world of interior design. So, don’t hesitate to embrace the future and make your living spaces a reflection of your unique style and personality.

Unveiling the quirky and luxurious world of Lemur Lodge
W h the continuing growth in the UK’s Airbnb market, we at w h Wendy about her in iration behind creating Lemur Lodge – a unique hotel, quirkly decorated in an animal in ired theme found in the heart of Boscombe.
How did Lemur Lodge come about?
Originally, I had run the building as an HMO for 10 years, due to change of policy the council decided they wanted change of use back to holiday accommodation
Where did the inspiration for the decor of Lemur Lodge come from?
I have always had a interest for interior design and in my travels, I am always taking creative ideas from the interiors of restaurant designs, hotel styling of bedrooms, bathrooms and communal areas.
A pinnacle moment that inspired me whilst travelling was my journey round South Africa. We went on safari and had an amazing time. It was incredibly surreal seeing nature unfold around you like that. My idea whilst creating Lemur Lodge was that I really wanted people to walk in and say ‘WOW’ and make it feel like you are exploring the attention to detail throughout.
Where have found your décor styling and sourced your materials for the hotel?
Myself and my colleagues have been searching for eight months. A lot of the pieces have been found in local antique shops and hand crafted by local businesses to create one-o pieces that reflect our
inspiration for the place. Overall, this was one of the most enjoyable parts of the renovation process. Gathering trinkets and propping up the place was really the icing on the cake.
What experience do you have in the property industry?
I have been in the property industry for over 30 years, and during that time I have run my personal portfolio. My first venture into the Airbnb industry was around four years ago, starting o with individual units in amongst long rental units. From my learning, this mixture of long-term tenants and holiday rentals didn’t gel. Therefore, by turning the whole building into an Airbnb, we have had great success and reviews from guests!
LOCAL PROPERTY | LEMUR LODGE
OCTOBER 23 50
How do you believe that Lemur Lodge is helping the local area?
In the renovation process, we used local signage companies and local contractors to see this idea come into fruition. I have lived in Boscombe for 12 years and it definitely is the hidden gem of Bournemouth. It has great bars and restaurants, as well as some of the best beaches in the UK. The area is on the up with the newly renovated Flamingo and Urban Beach restaurants just a walk away. New and more upmarket places are popping up everywhere in Boscombe and really giving it that ‘facelift’ it needs, and with that – spectacular and unique stays need to be available.
Where do you see the Airbnb market going?
Airbnb has flooded the market for shortterm rentals, with many people becoming accustomed to this ‘home away from home’ feel that Airbnbs are providing. Due
to the e ects of Covid and additionally, the current cost of living crisis in the UK, there is no doubt that people are choosing to holiday within the UK more.
This is definitely something that is boosting the sales of Airbnbs in the UK. Airbnb is definitely a trend setter and I think that we are likely to see other similar companies popping up. In order to stay relevant in the market, I have created a stay that is unique, boutique and niche.
Tell us about your team...
My right-hand woman is one of my best friends of 25 years. Her name is Fiona and she has been working as an Airbnb property manager for another company. When I got started in the Airbnb game, I just had to have her on this journey with me. My fiancé was also a big help in creating my vision. He has a building company and happily stepped in as project manager to oversee the work being done. We also have a great team of cleaners that work to a very high standard, as well as a wonderful team on site that makes the day to day of the project very enjoyable. Overall, we are a close-knit team and I couldn’t have done it without them.
Is there anything new on the horizon for you?
There are plans in the wings to get started on my second project in the Westcli area in Bournemouth. The vision for this one is equally as eccentric, but with a more sensual theme. Lemur Lodge has inspired me and I cannot wait to get started on my next vision!

A sci-fi cabin has landed in West Sussex and it’s a family fantasy come true
Much more comfortable than a typical A-frame, the triangular Hazel Hide cabin makes for an affordable weekend break, says Ben Mitchell.
“Wow”, my daughter Marie and her friend Isabella cry in unison as they run up to the Hazel Hide cabin sitting proudly at the edge of a West Sussex field.
The A-frame cabin – which to me is exactly what a UFO would look like if it had been created in Scandinavia – is a perfect triangular shape with the glass front giving us an immediate view of the stylish inside.
Marie grabs her phone and calls out to her friend: “Quick, let’s do our BeReal photo, I can’t wait to show everyone.”
The cabin, with its striking shape, white-washed wood interior and centrally-positioned log-burner, is eminently photographable and I’m soon taking out my phone to take my own snaps.
Once the photography session is over, we start exploring. The girls race up the wooden staircase to the upstairs bedroom and it soon becomes immediately apparent that there is no chance my partner and I will be sleeping up here tonight.
The mezzanine takes the triangular shape of the cabin a stage further with its triangular window providing a stunning view over the truly traditional English countryside which surrounds us.
TRAVEL | SUSSEX
OCTOBER 23 56
A book explaining how the hosts – primary school teacher Kate and Duncan, who works in IT – created the cabin states the triangular shape was chosen as it is intrinsically strong, meaning it stays stable without the need for heavy structural supports. It goes on to say that this strength means that the building only needed 33 ground screws – each of which can hold six tonnes of weight – to form the foundations. This makes the structure more ecofriendly as it does not require heavy machinery, does not disturb the soil and minimises the carbon footprint of the concrete needed.
The upstairs bedroom, like the cabin as a whole, features a range of lovingly-created and well-thought out features – from the triangular blind to the bedside fans and USB sockets to charge up those phones.
The Hide has been equipped with a whole side of solar panels, meaning it is entirely self-sufficient for all of its electricity. This even includes a Wi-Fi router, so there are no worries about rural signal dropouts to send those social media snaps.
Downstairs is the second, more regularly-shaped bedroom, as well as the modern bathroom – complete with hot water shower – and the small kitchen at the side of the bright, spacious living area. This has an insideoutside feel with its bi-fold doors opening on to the decking – which is triangular shaped, of course.

This closeness to nature has an immediate pull on the girls who cannot resist the excitement of exploring the massive seven-acre field – which is occupied solely by the cabin – with adjoining woodland made up mostly of hazel trees which gave the hide its name.
Having prepared lunch, the girls are still nowhere to be seen and a short walk finds them recreating movie scenes on a small bridge they have discovered in the woods.
After coaxing them back to eat, we discuss plans for the afternoon; a visit to a nearby vineyard appeals to my French partner, while I vote for a walk up to the South Downs which overlook the field, but the girls outnumber us with their bid to go kayaking at a nearby lake.
As we arrive at Southwater Country Park, we all approve of the decision as the woods surrounding the lake provide welcome respite from the sun beating down on us during another glorious June afternoon.
After hiring a kayak for each of the girls, they are soon out on the water, splashing each other with their paddles. Marie calls out hopefully: “Can we jump in?”, to which we reply with a resounding but futile: “No”, as they both ‘accidentally’ capsize within moments of each other, shrieking with delight at the refreshing dip.
When their time is up, they dry off while walloping down an ice cream from the lake-side cafe, keen to get back to our own corner of the countryside at the cabin.

Later we set off for a pre-dinner ramble to the White Lion Inn in what should have been the nearby village of Thakeham, except, because I soon become overconfident and distracted by the beautiful views in the early evening sunshine, I forget to check the map and miss a key turning which adds an extra lap of the village to our walk.
When we do eventually arrive, the efficient staff soon bring us ginger beers accompanied by bowls of piping hot triple-cooked chips which my partner declares the best she has ever tasted and none of us disagree. Thankfully, the walk home is more straightforward – and is beautifully lit as the sun begins its long summer descent.
Feeling too lazy to strike up the BBQ located next to the cabin, I opt for cooking pizzas in the gas oven. Meanwhile, the girls plunder a selection of board games left by the owners and challenge us to play. There are also shelves of books in case you do find a spare moment to sit down and just relax.
As the girls lay the table, Marie discovers the switch for the outdoor lighting which casts a magical glow over the cabin, the bright bulbs echoing the stars which are starting to emerge in the cloudless sky above.
The next morning, feeling refreshed from a night’s rest in the absolute peace that you only get from being in the middle of the countryside, I set off with my partner to get supplies from the nearest shop in the village of Ashington – a 25-minute walk along a convenientlylocated bridleway.
On returning to the field, we are greeted by the girls, dressed in their swimming costumes, running wildly round the cabin in the middle of a water balloon fight. Watching and laughing at a safe distance, I am not sure how the winner is judged, but it seems to be the one who gets the wettest.
After a much-appreciated full English breakfast, we start to pack our bags when I get an email from the hosts prompting us to hunt for a clue for the code to open a tiny secret cupboard with a surprise inside – an exciting Enid Blyton-style touch to end our stay.

For a change some good news!
In August 2021, I reported in this column that the government was in consultation to bring all currently rated rental properties of E (F and G had already been banned in 2018) to be changed to a ‘C’ grading. The proposed date was 2025 for new tenancies and remaining tenancies by 2028.
The works involved in upgrading a property to ‘C’, was going to cost thousands to most landlords. Due to the date not being fixed yet in parliament, landlords have been very concerned at looming 2025 date.
In September 2023, Rushi Sunak, the prime minister announced that they are scrapping the proposed plans, which was received with a massive sigh of relief.
LEVELLING UP PAPER – RENTERS REFORM BILL?
The second reading should have taken place by now and in fact, not a lot has been written since the first reading in May 23. In fact, it is highly unlikely to be heard now until
The proposed white paper published in 2019, has seen landlords very concerned of the major impact it could have on their business.
With the EPC rating of ‘C’ and the Renters Reform Bill, increased mortgage rates and Airbnb o ering more attractive returns, we have seen landlords exiting the market, which in turn has reduced the stock in the private sector. With not enough houses being built annually, this will only have a negative impact on renters with rising rents due to the lack of stock.
At Move On, we are helping landlords sell their tenanted properties to investors. If you would like an informal chat on your options, please Email sharon@moveon.biz or ring me 01202711169.

With origins from Edinburgh to Bangkok, these bartender’s drinks will get the party started, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
When it comes to crafting cocktails, it always helps to hear the story and inspiration behind the drink –especially if you’re rustling one up at home and want to add a little bit of theatre to your favourite tipple.
“It’s not often you get to pull back the curtain and understand why your favourite cocktails are made in a certain way,” Ally Martin writes in his new book, The Curious Cocktail Cabinet. “Many of the bartenders I collaborated with have also shared their secret sauces and homemade ingredients that add extra depth and character to the cocktails,” he reveals.
The book promises an eclectic mix of 100 recipes to highlight the versatility of gin – and Hendrick’s Gin in particular. The recipes range from easy peasy to curiously complex creations, perfect for cocktail hounds on the scent for something challenging. Here are three faff-free favourites to get the party started…

BREWBERRY YUM
Created by Philip Stefanescu, of Tropic City, Bangkok, Thailand: “This bar packs a tropical punch. It’s one of the best places to party and enjoy top-notch drinks.”
Difficulty level – exceedingly easy…
“Phillip Stefanescu hails from Sweden and wanted to create a drink that reminded him of those Swedish midsummers. The blueberry jam here works wonderfully when combined with Hendrick’s Gin, mixed with mint and topped with the hoppy bitterness of the local beer. Do this and you’ve got one cool summer serve on your hands.”
INGREDIENTS
45ml gin, 25ml lemon juice, 25ml blueberry jam, 10ml simple syrup, 5 mint leaves, 30ml lager. Blueberries and mint sprig to garnish.
METHOD
Half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all the ingredients (except the lager) and shake. Strain into a highball filled with cubed ice, top up with lager and garnish with a few blueberries and sprig of mint.
MINT 500
Created by Jason Scott, Bramble Bar & Lounge, Edinburgh, Scotland: “An underground Edinburgh institution that operates with military precision to deliver tasty, creative offerings against a backdrop of good tunes.”
Difficulty level – absurdly effortless…
“Created back in 2006, this drink has always been one that’s flown off the shelf and into the glasses of visitors to this hip-hop-filled cocktail haven.
“There are a lot of great flavours in here, which create an incredibly fresh cocktail.”
INGREDIENTS
50ml gin, 12.5ml pressed apple juice, 15ml freshly squeezed lime juice, 2.5ml vanilla syrup, 2.5ml elderflower cordial, 6 mint leaves, 2 basil leaves, 1 dash peach bitters, 1 dash egg white.
METHOD
Pour all ingredients into a shaker and ‘dry’ shake (without ice). Then half-fill the shaker with ice and shake rapidly, finestrain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a basil leaf.

NOTHING COM-PEARS TO YOU
Created by Tim Lefevre, Door 74, Amsterdam, Netherlands: “A charming prohibition-era-themed bar serving up a mix of creative and classic cocktails.”
Difficulty level – absurdly effortless…
“This drink is a twist on an old-school classic called the Tuxedo No.2. In this case, the maraschino is switched up for some delicious pear liqueur, which works perfectly with Hendrick’s Gin.
“The absinthe bumps up all the bright notes found in the gin and the aromatic sweetness of the white vermouth builds on the gorgeous floral character of Hendrick’s. There are no crazy techniques required – what makes this drink is quality ingredients, good ice and nice glassware.”
INGREDIENTS (SERVES 6-8)
270ml gin, 270ml Dolin Blanc, 60ml pear liqueur, 12 dashes of orange bitters, 6 dashes absinthe, 140ml filtered water, lemon zest to garnish.
METHOD
Grab yourself a clean, empty 750ml glass bottle and use a funnel to add all the ingredients. Leave in your fridge to chill for at least three hours. To serve, shake well and pour into a chilled Nick & Nora glass or other stemmed glass, garnish with lemon zest.

Bring Autumn into your home
Carly House from Carly House Interiors ves advice on brin ng the new season into our homes.
The Autumn season has o icially arrived, so draw the curtains, light the fire and snuggle up with your favourite film and chunky throw. The colder season is always more manageable snuggled up in soft textures and comforting colours, and that’s not just our wardrobes!
Colour Palette
Colour psychology is a fascinating topic. Here is how I use it for the Autumn season to create a feeling and not just a look.
Autumn colour palette is earthy, deep and rich. Just look at the ground and notice the colours of the leaves that have fallen. Yellows, golds and reds with a hint of black which makes them feel grounded. Use wonderful heritage prints (take inspo from Dutch Hertiage fabric and William Morris designs), velvets, rustic finishes and natural materials.
Adding small with big impact
Re-designing an entire room for one season can be a little bit OTT, so why not focus your attention on sourcing subtle and unique autumn decorations that embody the season. Things like introducing ornamental items, similar to these coloured table glassware that I found at nkuku. Change your bedding or add some extra scatter cushions and throws.
I love using golds and bronze hardware throughout a home anytime of the year, but a simple cutlery swap can make a huge di erence.
A rug is an ideal accessory which can be changed to suit the seasons. When styling an Autumn home, a bold faux fur or shaggy rug would be ideal. Rugs with luxurious flu y fibres help make your home feel warm and cosy as the weather gets cooler.
Wherever you love the chillier season or not this article will show you how you can recreate that cosy, autumnal feel within your home by choosing the right interior décor. Embrace the Autumn hues and cosy feeling by creating sophisticated Autumn interior using soft, warm hues and bold patterns.

Combining faux and real is a great tip when styling your home for autumn. Anything that might wither and die during the season, such as fresh foliage and mini pumpkins can be replaced with artificial versions to keep them looking great throughout October and November. I love fern in the Autumn, the changing of colours really showcase the season. Add it to a console table or centre it on a dining table for the most natural of seasons vibes!

How to create pet-specific stylish spaces
Decor for dogs and cats is becoming increasingly chic, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
If you have a furry friend at home, it’s safe to say they are your best friend – and just as much a part of the family as anyone else.
Indeed, according to home renovation and design platform, Houzz, more than three-in-five pet owners actively consider their pets when making decisions about home renovations, with designers on the platform noting a rise in pet-specific requests during home remodels.
“Whether it’s considering the best materials or layouts for our furry friends, or even integrating bed nooks, builtin dog showers or clever feeding stations, pets are an important consideration when designing a home that works for all the family,” says Katie Greenhalf, director at KG Lifestyle & Interiors. “And as a result, people are keen to integrate items for them within their interior design scheme,” she enthuses.
Bespoke storage is all the rage
“For many people, storage is a key part of designing where they live – and considering your pet within this, is integral to a design that works for everyone in the home.
Greenhalf continues: “We’ve had clients request bespoke cupboards in the kitchen for a pet’s food; easily accessible for pets but also hidden away to keep things clean and tidy, and tucked away from toddlers too; integrated dog showers into the utility room and creating dog beds in the under-stairs area.”

Stylish sleep spaces are trending For proud pet owners, dedicated spaces for pets are no longer hidden away, but are now at the centre of the design. According to Houzz’s survey, a quarter of pet owners have created a built-in nook for their pet’s bed.
“It isn’t as crazy as it might sound, as a dedicated nook can be positioned out of the way, rather than in the middle of the floor like standard pet beds and cushions,” explains Amanda Pollard, senior editor, Houzz.
“It also allows owners to locate their pet’s bed in a kitchen or living space, rather than having them sleep in a separate space away from family life.”
If you’re thinking about commissioning a bespoke piece of furniture for your living room, she suggests including an integrated sleep space for your dog – so it ties into the design of your room.
“For furry friends of the smaller variety, such as cats or petite pooches, you can carve out an area in a sideboard for a little built-in bed,” suggests Pollard.
A-list access is also top of the agenda And it’s not just sleep spaces being incorporated into design plans either – how pets can get in and out of your home is another important factor to consider.
Especially with big swathes of glazing becoming increasingly popular, deciding where the humble old cat flap should go can be a slight hurdle.
Dominic McKenzie, director at Dominic McKenzie Architects came up with an innovative idea to overcome this. “We recently designed a house with wall-to-wall glazing across the rear elevation, but the owners’ cat needed a way to get in and out.
“We devised this special entrance through one of the cupboard doors in the kitchen, which leads onto a cat flap to the outside,” he explains. “We made the cat’s doorway house-shaped to give it a special character –the cat is very happy.”
Homeowners are always very keen to make their pets’ lives better as part of a renovation – as well as everyone else in the family, says McKenzie. “There’s usually a dedicated area devoted to the pet – and often their ways in and out of the property are high on the list of priorities when planning the project!”

ABOVE Dog bed with bespoke feeding area | Hampshire Design Consultancy/Houzz/PA HOUSE-MAG.CO.UK 87
But what if there isn’t any space on the ground floor for a cat flap?
Leah Chisnall, interior design project manager for Absolute Project Management, shares a creative approach for cat access in these instances…
“We’ve had two projects that included rear extensions with beautiful full-length glazing, and no space for a cat flap,” says Chisnall. “As a solution, we created cat flaps on the first floor (in a study and a bathroom) and included bespoke cat staircases from the first floor to the garden, for the family cats to use.”
Feeding stations are increasingly fashionable And for those muddy paws and messy food bowls, innovative spaces for feeding and bathing are also high on the renovation wish list.
According to Houzz’s survey, one in five homeowners have added a built-in pet area for bathing or feeding into their homes – and for Absolute Project Management, it’s a top request from recent clients.
“The dog featured here is the very lovely Biscuit, belonging to one of our previous clients,” discloses Chisnall. “As part of their terrace house renovation, we converted a fairly snug ground-floor WC into a dog shower room.
“We built a short tiled shower wall to enclose the space, fitted a stone (splash-proof) shelf for shampoo bottles and fur brushes, hooks for towels and dog leashes, and made sure the shower waste was large enough (with an adequate catcher) for the excess dog fur!” explains Chisnall.
Cats aren’t missing out on dedicated spaces either, as Leah shares another project where her team created a beautiful cat litter room for a client.
“We carved out a small space in an under-stairs cupboard with a hole in the hallway door for the cat to get in – and beautiful stone flooring for the litter box to go on,” says Chisnall. “It was a very luxe and practical solution to keep it out of sight!”

Dress to impress
There are a myriad of styles to choose from when dressing windows, with possibilities ranging from sheers to blackout curtains to plantation shutters and roman blinds... windows of different sizes and shapes can present difficulties when it comes to deciding on a window treatment. Tall windows, doors that open inwards, bedrooms that need to be dark or large walls of glass in contemporary new builds all present unique challenges.
Window treatments can help to alter a windows dimension, by extending the curtains above and to each side of the window you can create the illusion of a bigger window. In interiors where doors
and window are different shapes and sizes curtains can be used to unify the space and create the illusion of balance and symmetry.
Apart from visual appeal, the style and texture of curtains can change the whole mood of a room. A traditional triple pinch pleat will stand the test of time and, when interlined and lined, provide another layer of insulation. If you prefer a more contemporary, lighter feel a wave headed curtain has cleaner lines and uses less fabric. Whereas neither of these might be appropriate in a low-ceilinged country cottage where the relaxed feel of a flop over ruffle or a cottage pleat may be appropriate.
From bays to roof lights, circles, triangles and gothic arches, there are many windows that can be challenging to dress. There are options including Italian stringing in apex windows or Duette honeycomb blindswhich have the added bonus of helping with acoustics, insulation or strong light. Plantation Shutters are proving to be a very versatile window covering especially for curved windows and come in an extensive range of colours offering good light control. Another option for awkward small round windows might be to make a round fabric covered shutter; a feature which incorporates colour, texture and pattern.
Partners in Design have over 17 years experience in dressing all styles of windows and offer free at home consultations to advise on how to make the best use of light and provide window dressings that will truly enhance your home.

MOTORING NEWS
Mark Slack tells us the latest news on all things motoring.
ROAD TEST: ORA
FUNKY CAT FIRST EDITION - ENGAGING AND STYLISH
As a motoring writer I’m lucky to receive invitations to drive new cars on their launch, and later to have such cars for extended periods. Driving a car for a few hours on a launch, and then sampling it for a week, can confirm your initial thoughts, or sometimes highlight issues over the time of longer loan.
When I first drove the ORA CAT last year I came away impressed, and having spent a week and several hundred miles behind the wheel my view has remained largely unchanged. The CAT isn’t possessed of the usual aggressive looks, pencil thin lights and sharp angles. Style is always subjective but those who saw the ORA all thought it a pleasant change from the more usual brutalist styling stance of many new cars.
Prices start at £31,995, so this isn’t some bargain basement entry-level model but it comes as standard with smart cruise, auto dimming rear view mirror, electric front
seats, wireless phone charging, built-in sat nav’, high beam assist, auto lights and keyless entry and start. Heated seats would have been welcome on colder mornings, but these aren’t even available as an option.
You can specify a number of colour schemes that match exterior with interior and while maybe not for everyone’s they add a bit of life to the usually rather dull automotive palette on offer from many car makers. The build quality of the ORA appears good, although cheaper, hard plastics lurk at lower levels in the cabin. In general it’s a nice place to be and certainly doesn’t lack comfort for longer journeys.
Unfortunately, it does lack the range of some competitors, the 193 miles official figure would in reality be more like 160 miles in my view. The main issues though are the ridiculously over sensitive safety features, such lane keep and autonomous emergency braking. No matter the road lane keep kept activating and the emergency braking decided to apply itself when an oncoming car was waiting in a filter lane. The car behind me was not happy!
To be fair to the ORA there are still updates to be done so these tweaks will hopefully improve matters, and add the long overdue Apple Car Play and Android Auto. It’s an engaging car but at its price these niggles should have been dealt with long before the car came to market. Although only minor issues, when added together they make a potentially good car rather irritating.

A MOTORING MUSEUM WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY DRIVE THE EXHIBITS
If you look at most modern cars you’ll notice that they could almost be the same car irrespective of the badge on the bonnet. In years gone by you didn’t need to see the badge to know what make of car was coming towards you. Classic cars were never the automotive white goods that many new cars seem to have become as manufacturers increasingly share parts and merge plants. Irrespective of whether they’re veteran, vintage, classic or modern classic they invariably raise a smile and engender a patience rarely seen on our roads nowadays.
In those bygone motoring days, the British motor industry was a powerhouse even though latterly the conglomerate that was British Leyland lacked the ability to compete with foreign car makers. At the time British cars were looked down upon as poor quality, with dubious reliability and a lack of features. Now the very cars we were so disparaging about have been all but lost in the roads of time.
There’s a motoring attraction in Derbyshire though that aims to change all that and bring together motoring memories of your old cars, maybe your parent’s cars, and has over 100 British cars housed in a museum with a difference.
The difference is that you can actually drive the cars! The Great British Car Journey is based in the village of Ambergate about 30 minutes north of Derby in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
Inside the museum there is a wealth of cars and each one has a QR code that you can scan with the hand-held PDA that guides you round the displays. It’s not a vast space but so interesting you’ll not find it difficult to lose several hours.

OCTOBER 23 100
I recently had the chance to sample a few of their cars and naturally went for models from my younger days, a Triumph TR7 softtop - I bought myself one as a 21st birthday present - an Austin 1300GT that was even in the same colour as my Dad’s, a Ford Granada MK1 that was a model featured in the 1970s police programme The Sweeney and finally a 1938 Wolseley 14 that was one of the cars used by actors Honeysuckle Weeks and Michael Kitchen in Foyle’s War. I had a smaller Wolseley 10 before I lost garage space so it bought back memories of vintage outings.
Stepping back into modern classics such as the TR7 and 1300GT, although great fun, makes you realise that even if modern cars are a tad bland, they are so much more comfortable and useable. The classics are much more fun and both the TR7 and Austin 1300GT were surprisingly nippy
and you had to drive them, as opposed to more modern fare that almost drives itself. As daily classics both would be useable and practical in terms of space. You also find visibility is much improved in older cars because the level of safety features in modern cars wasn’t there and modern designs are sleeker with less glass area and rely on sensors and cameras.
The real vintage cars can also be useable on a more local level and the Wolseley I drove had no problems in terms of being difficult to drive, had hydraulic brakes and would cruise happily at 50 mph. You still need to have your wits about you in terms of looking much further ahead than you would in a modern car, and the lack of power steering makes itself known at lowspeed manoeuvres.
The Great British Car Journey and Drive Dad’s Car are unusual in that they will appeal to both car enthusiasts and non-car enthusiasts alike.

ROAD TEST: HONDA’S LATEST SUV ARRIVAL – THE ZR-V
Honda’s latest SUV arrival, the ZR-V, slots neatly between the HR-V and CR-V and is a stylish and much less aggressively drawn SUV. The softer look goes against the styling of many SUVs and with that reduced bulk is a more compact interior, despite not feeling in any way cramped. As ever with Honda the build quality is superb, and a particularly neat addition is the honeycomb air vent that straddles the fascia. It’s also a sensible and welcome change to see a new car with actual buttons, the climate control can be operated without the need for multiple presses of a touchscreen.
There are three levels of trim and all have the same power system, a 2.0-litre petrol unit with hybrid assistance using two electric motors and a battery pack that makes for a seamless transition between electric and petrol power. The set-up develops a healthy 181 bhp with the benchmark 62 mph arriving in 7.8 seconds and a maximum speed of 107 mph.
The single speed automatic transmission is a smooth affair but accelerate firmly and things become a little vocal, opt for a more relaxed drive and things are almost whisper quiet. This isn’t down to Honda it’s just a characteristic of this kind of CVT transmission, and that apart it’s a clever and efficient arrangement.
All models are well equipped with front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, navigation, keyless entry and start, heated front seats, adaptive cruise, auto wipers and lights, powered, heated and reverse tilt door mirrors plus Apple Car Play and Android
Auto. It’s an enviable list but even with a range starting price of £39,495 the Honda offers a better standard specification than many competitors at its price.
On the road the ZR-V is a relaxing and effortless drive providing you keep your heavy acceleration under control. It handles twisting routes with more than a degree of aplomb and has decently responsive steering too. From an economy perspective the ZR-V returns late forties mpg and although there’s no all-wheeldrive capability, few SUVs have that nowadays, the Honda has a ‘snow-drive’ button that provides a useful aid to traction in mildly difficult conditions.
Premium badges are all well and good but look beyond the badge and the quality, usability and style of Honda’s latest models are all too often overlooked. Although they may not build adrenaline fuelled cars –Civic Type R excepted – the ZR-V is a Honda well worth driving.

ROAD TEST: MAZDA MX-5 – THE VERY DEFINITION OF A SPORTS CAR
How many true, affordable sports cars are on sale at the moment? If your definition of a sports car is a two seater with folding roof, affordable is a debateable point given prices at the moment, then your choice is quite limited. One of the most recognisable and unarguable examples of a sports car is Mazda’s MX-5. Launched over 30 years ago a continuous series of updates and upgrades have not dimmed the MX-5s ability to produce a fun drive despite not being an outright performance machine.
Two options are on offer, the full convertible with fabric roof or the RF which is a fully electric retractable hard top and looks more like a targa top once the magic of the powered roof has been completed.
Prices start from £25,825 for the full convertible, £27,725 for the RF, and there are 1.5 and 2.0 litre petrol engines with either 6-speed manual or automatic gears.
Standard fare on the lead-in Prime-Line RF model includes Apple Car Play and Android Auto, heated seats, powered and heated door mirrors, LED headlights, air conditioning, push-button start, navigation, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill launch assist and cruise control. All Mazda MX-5 models are a snug fit in the cabin, but the finish and build quality is excellent.
In top line Homura trim the 184 hp, 2.0-litre engine produces a 6.8 second sprint to the benchmark 62 mph and on to a maximum
of 137 mph (racetrack only of course). Mated to Mazda’s slick 6-speed manual gearbox, limited slip differential and rear wheel drive, it makes for entertaining motoring on twisting cross country roads. The sports suspension is a tad on the firm side over some of our rougher roads but generally draws a nice line between comfort and performance.
Additions to the standard equipment include Nappa leather trim, adaptive LED headlights, climate control, reversing camera and sensors, auto lights and wipers, auto dimming rear view mirror and 17” alloys. Priced at £34,510 this isn’t a cheap sports car but it’s a very grown up sports car and one which answers those who want a more refined open aired solution to fun motoring.
Depending on your interpretation the market for true sports cars is pretty small, many that are billed as such are more sports coupes, so if you are in the market for some sports car fun then Mazda’s MX-5 RF might just be one of the only ways to find it.

Cheap suits, upsell and engine lights… not the RB way
When you are looking for a new car, one of the first things to do is jump onto one of the nations top car search providers. There you have lists and lists of every type of car for sale, before filtering it to suit what it is that you fancy next.
Then you are shown several potential choices for your next new car. So, now it’s just a case of working out where they are, who is selling them and, of course, the price.

An hour goes by while you tick boxes to say that you don’t want key cover, but you will take the £70 GAP protection product that they charge £399 for, along with the alloy wheel cover, but skip the tyre cover because the suit is watching you, calculating in his head how much extra he just earned.
time you get home, then it’s covered by the amazing warranty that should cover most things; more likely the gearbox and engine only if it failed on a certain day, time and the moon was approaching it’s final quarter.

You narrow it down even further to match your requirements and there it is! The perfect car. They do finance too and a promise of driveaway insurance, a warranty and the pictures are presented as if Michealangelo himself had caressed those lines and perfect colours. It’s exciting! You start the engine and the dash illuminates. Only one light doesn’t go out and it’s the engine management light. You are told it’s probably just a sensor. So, a tablet gets plugged in, turns it off and you are assured that if it comes back on by the

Emily Scott on the joy of simplicity and cooking for President Joe Biden
The Cornwall-based chef is all about seasonal ingredients and fuss-free food, she tells Katie Wright.
Emily Scott has called the UK’s southernmost county home for 25 years, but the chef’s roots in the region go back even further.
“I spent a lot of time in Cornwall as a child, because my grandparents had a house down here,” says Scott, 48, on a video call from her home near Newquay.
“And also in France, because my grandfather was half-French and they lived out in Provence.”
Born in Sussex, she moved to the picturesque village of Port Isaac aged 23 and married her first husband, a fisherman, and the couple had three children, Oscar, 21, Finn, 20, and Evie, 18.
“Sadly, I divorced the fisherman – or not sadly, I’m not sure – but actually, it’s all very amicable. But I chose to stay in Cornwall… and my career has just grown and got better and better.”
Scott’s first foray into food was the seaside Harbour Restaurant in Port Isaac, followed by eight years running the much-loved St Tudy Inn gastropub and rooms.
Now, she’s creative director (“I’m not apronon as much as I used to be”) at Emily Scott Food, the restaurant that sits on the sea wall at Watergate Bay.
What unites all these culinary outposts?
“I’ve been banging the simplicity drum for a long time – my food’s all about seasonality, but also not too much faffing around.”
That ethos is evident in her second cookbook, Time & Tide, which includes plenty of one-pot main dishes, simple suppers and satisfying bakes.
“It’s about times of day,” says Scott, who lives with her partner Mark Hellyar, a winemaker, and her children.
“There’s a lovely chapter called ‘morning cafe’ with lots of nods to my French roots, because that’s just a very natural thing for me. We’ve got ‘rise and shine’, meaning breakfast time, we’ve got ‘seaside soirees’.”
The recipes reflect Scott’s trademark Cornish-French fusion with seafood –scallops, mussels, mackerel, crab – taking centre stage alongside French culinary classics like beurre blanc, bouillabaisse, ratatouille and creme brulee, while Cornish sea salt and clotted cream appear on many an ingredients list.
The book cover features a quote from American actor and foodie Stanley Tucci, who has become a friend.
“It’s just been a very natural coming together through food,” says Scott. “You know, when you see him on television in his Italy series, he genuinely is that person. He genuinely loves food and wine, and that’s what connects everyone in my view.”
The chef and author didn’t always have such a favourable view of feasting. She had anorexia in her teens and was forced to drop out of school.
After going in and out of treatment, she was offered the opportunity to go and work in a hotel restaurant in France.

Emily Scott | Kristin Perers/PA
“It’s quite a normal thing for people with eating disorders to end up in food, I think, because, I mean, you can’t give up food,” Scott says.
“I just ended up – kind of through choice – just recovering, and turning my rather unhealthy relationship with food around, and finding the joy of cooking for people.”
In 2021, the restauranteur got the chance to cook for some very important people when she was asked by the Cabinet Office to cater a dinner for world leaders at the G7 summit in Cornwall’s Carbis Bay.
“They were looking for something slightly different – they didn’t want the very formal, old school, white gloves [style],” Scott says.
“I submitted my menu and told them I’d be giving them tea towels as napkins, and we’d have French Duralex glasses, mismatched cutlery, that kind of thing, and they loved it.”
On the menu was melon gazpacho, turbot with miso beurre blanc sauce, and strawberry and elderflower pavlova, followed by “little mini ice creams for the petit fours and Cornish fudge we made. So it was all quite nostalgic nods to the seaside”.
What was it like emerging from the kitchen at the end of the meal to greet diners including then UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel?
“It was literally like, you know when you go to a friend’s house for dinner, but you’re really late and you turn up and everyone’s had a drink? I was suddenly surrounded,” Scott recalls.
“President Biden had his arm around me, I had Macron and his wife signing my book, because my book had come out the day before, then I had Angela Merkel saying,
‘We must get a photograph now, come on’. It was quite a moment really.”
Even better, the proud mum got to share the experience with her kids: “Oscar, my eldest, and my partner’s daughter served the world leaders, and my son Finn was in the kitchen cooking as part of my team. I thought, as a parent, I’m done!”
Plus, the feedback on the food from the VIPs was top notch.
“They loved it. And what was so nice is I said to [the organisers], ‘I want them to be relaxed. I want them to stay longer’,” Scott says.
“The secret service were like, ‘They ran over time, they were so relaxed’. We did our job.”

INGREDIENTS
1 whole properly free-range chicken (about 1.5kg/ 3lb 5 oz)
50–100g (2–3½oz) unsalted butter, softened
6 rashers of unsmoked streaky bacon
2 lemons, halved
8 rosemary sprigs
12 garlic cloves, left whole and unpeeled
2 tablespoons olive oil
300g (10 ½oz) chorizo, thickly sliced
500g (1lb 2oz) small new potatoes, left whole
Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
BY EMILY SCOTT | FOOD & DRINK
INGREDIENTS
50g (2oz) unsalted butter
300g (10 1⁄2 oz/1 1⁄2 cups) clotted cream
150ml (5fl oz/scant 2⁄3 cup) creme fraiche or Rodda’s double (heavy) cream
1 whole nutmeg, for grating
1.2kg (2lb 10oz) waxy potatoes, peeled (Desirée potatoes work well)
900ml (30fl oz/3 1⁄2 cups) full-fat milk
2 bay leaves
1 garlic clove, halved lengthways
200g (7oz) baby spinach, washed and stalks removed (wild garlic is a perfect alternative when in season)
Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Roast chicken with chorizo, garlic & rosemary
SERVES 4
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan/400°F/Gas 6). Place the chicken in an ovento-table roasting dish. Rub the breasts and legs with the butter, season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, then place the streaky bacon over the breasts of the chicken (this protects the breast meat for the first part of the cooking, keeping the meat moist and adding delicious flavour. The crispy bacon becomes the cook’s perk).
2. Place the lemon halves and most of the rosemary in the cavity. Arrange the garlic cloves around the chicken in the oven dish, then drizzle the whole chicken with the olive oil. Roast in the oven for 15–20 minutes until the bacon is crispy.
3. Remove the dish from the oven, remove the bacon and set aside. Baste the chicken with the buttery and lemony juices, then arrange the slices of chorizo and small potatoes around the chicken with the remaining rosemary sprigs. Return to the oven to roast for 45 minutes–1 hour until the chicken is golden brown and the juices run clear (test by inserting a skewer into a leg).
4. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Carve and serve with the buttery, golden juices, with the roasted potatoes and chorizo, accompanied by greens or a salad.
Dauphinoise potatoes with spinach & clotted cream
SERVES 8
1. Preheat the oven to 160°C (140°C fan/320°F/Gas 2). Grease the sides and bottom of an oven-to-table dish with a little of the butter and set the rest aside to use later.
2. Place the clotted cream and creme fraîche in a bowl and stir together, then add a pinch of sea salt, some black pepper and a grating of nutmeg.
3. Cut the potatoes into 2.5mm ( 1⁄8 in) slices. Place them in a heavy-based pan and cover with the milk, then add a good pinch of sea salt, another grating of nutmeg, the bay leaves and garlic. Bring to the boil and cook for 10 minutes (be careful – the bottom of the pan can catch). Drain, discarding the milk, garlic and bay leaves.
4. Carefully layer the potatoes in the buttered dish alternating them with layers of spinach, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper. Make sure the top and bottom layers are just potato. Pour over the clotted cream mixture, making sure the top layer is just covered. Finish the top off with some more grated nutmeg and a few knobs of the remaining butter.
5. Bake in the middle of the oven for 1 hour, or until golden brown and a table knife passes through with ease. Allow to rest.

4. Spread the mixture out over a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10–15 minutes until golden. Allow to cool.

WELCOME TO THIRTEEN
A stylish fine dining restaurant showcasing contemporary British cuisine.
Presenting Dorset’s newest fine dining restaurant, Thirteen. Head Chef Alex Naik (Dorset Chef of the Year 2018, pictured above), together with parents Hem & Elisabeth Naik and their daughter Frances, have realised a long-held dream of owning a fine dining restaurant.
The concept behind Thirteen is an evening tasting menu – 13 carefully created individual courses, using locally sourced and foraged seasonal produce. In addition, a shorter a la carte menu is offered at lunchtime. Thirteen is unique: menus are designed daily, and wine pairing works to match the flavours of the day.
Each course is delivered straight from Thirteen’s open kitchen right to your table and described by a chef before you embark on the next flavours. Since recently opening on Wednesday 13th September 2023, Chef’s table is proving to be a popular choice. Here guests dine right in the thick of the action, watching the chefs work, and are able to converse with the chefs as they run the kitchen and prepare your food.
Located on Ashley Road in Parkstone, Thirteen sits on the main route between Bournemouth and Poole, making it an easy to find destination restaurant. It is an intimate restaurant and reservations are required. Open Tuesday to Saturday, Thirteen’s 13 courses await!

THE GOODS YARD; RE-IMAGINED
How do you refurb a pub, without changing the essence of what it was? By not re-inventing the wheel, just polishing it…
Reopening Broadstone’s iconic Goods Yard Pub was a journey into the heart of tradition with a fresh perspective. This beloved establishment, steeped in history, is set to make a triumphant return, and it’s all about embracing the past while stepping into the future.
The Goods Yard’s revival began with a careful restoration of its physical space. It preserves the cosy, familiar atmosphere whilst introducing subtle touches that have enhanced comfort and aesthetics, it feels more upmarket, but it’s still the traditional pub. The cherished fireplaces, a symbol of warmth and community, remain focal points, ensuring that the pub’s soul remains intact.
The culinary experience at the Goods Yard has also been reinvented, under the watchful eye of Executive Chef Jon Newing, a rising star Chef Ethan Platen-Mills. A revitalized menu, featuring classic pub fare alongside innovative dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, promises to delight discerning palates. The bar will offer a diverse selection of craft beers, ales, and cocktails to cater to modern tastes while paying homage to its timeless offerings.

2:22 A Ghost Story
The new stage phenomenon that has taken the West End by storm now comes to Mayflower Theatre
2:22 A Ghost Story comes fresh from record-breaking seasons at five West End theatres with a host of acclaimed star performances. It’s a brilliantly funny and adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear… What do you believe? And do you dare discover the truth?
We talk with Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist to find out more about him and his inspiration for writing 2:22.
Can you tell us a bit about 2:22 A Ghost Story?
It’s definitely best going into 2:22 knowing as little as possible about the production, but I can say that the story revolves around a married couple, Jenny and Sam who are redecorating their new home, and Jenny is convinced they’re visited by a supernatural presence every day at 2:22 am.
The play takes place across one evening and seeks to fundamentally answer the question of whether ghosts exist. It’s a jump-out-of-your-seat, spine-tingling psychological thriller, but also a really great night out. Audiences yell, scream, laugh and cry - it’s a good way to get to know your neighbour as well as you’ll probably need an arm to grab hold of for support!
What were your inspirations for writing 2:22?
It was inspired by a friend of mine actually who said she’d seen a ghost. It really blew me away, because she’s not the type of person I’d expect to have that kind of
experience. I was immediately fascinated by the idea that different people would react to her in very different ways. Some people might believe her and some people might laugh at her, others would be annoyed by her - this whole range of possible opinions became the foundations of 2:22.
I then thought, what if you distill that range of opinions into a couple, where one person believes there is a ghost in the house and the other person adamantly disagrees.

What then happens to their relationship?
On a more practical note, there are some uncanny parallels between my life and the setup of the play. I, too, was redecorating an old Victorian house with my partner that was once owned by an elderly woman, so you can see some mirroring there. Sadly, we weren’t haunted by the supernatural!
Can you tell us about your writing process?
It’s been a totally obsessive labour of love. I poured over every single word of this play for about five years. It was actually the research for 2:22 A Ghost Story, that lead me to creating my podcasts Battersea Poltergeist and Uncanny. I speak to people who’ve had interactions with ghosts regularly so I took some inspiration from there too.
I was also inspired by the world we live in now. War in Europe, climate change, and Covid-19 is forcing us to consider our mortality. This inevitably makes you think about the big questions, with the biggest of all being, what happens to us after we die? That’s the main basis for every religion, but where others found God, I found ghosts!
How involved have you been with the production? What’s the working relationship like, between you as writer and all the creatives who bring the script to life?
I’ve been very closely involved in the production since its move from my laptop screen to a rehearsal room. As we’re on our fifth iteration in the West End, and as we head out on tour, my involvement does become less necessary, but it’s a project that has been life-changing for me, so it’s always a joy to come back to. I work with every new cohort of actors at rehearsals and am still a regular in the audience. People often tell me that they’ve gone to see it for a second time and had a totally different, yet equally enjoyable experience.
What I find the most interesting is how a different cast changes the dynamics between characters immediately, and changes how the audience perceives each character. For example, the impact of Jenny not being believed is felt differently for a Jenny who doesn’t have an RP accent or a Jenny who is from the global majority.
This adds an additional nuance to her husband’s inability to take her seriously or believe her.
Do you believe in ghosts? Have you had any supernatural experiences?
I always call myself a skeptic who wants to believe, but I’m not quite there yet. I’ve never had a supernatural experience, but I have a lifelong desire to have one, I still live in hope!
It’s quite a comforting idea to me that they exist, and I think someone should be able to say they’ve seen a ghost, and not be laughed at, or have their sanity questioned. I was brought up in an atheist household, but I craved some form of belief and I think I found that in ghosts.
What will audiences love most about the show?
It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, it’ll make you jump out of your seat - this is a really immersive night out. Sometimes theatre can feel a little stuffy, audiences are asked to sit quietly and still, but this play gives you the license to gasp, scream, and yelp - it’s almost interactive in that way!
After years of being separated from each other by Covid, I really can’t think of anything better than being terrified in a big group of people.
2:22 is an adrenaline-fuelled experience that is both entertaining and thoughtprovoking. I’m sure that all families, couples, and friends who see the show will spend the rest of their evenings haunted with the possibilities of the supernatural!
2:22 A Ghost Story is playing at Mayflower theatre from 17 - 21 October, tickets can be booked at www.mayflower.org.uk
