Ways to make dark rooms look lighter
Interior experts share clever tips with Lisa Salmon. Summer over, and it’s time to face the prospect of darker days. But although the days are getting shorter, there are ways to make sure as much brightness as possible is getting into your home – not just by flicking a light switch. “Not every room is blessed with masses of natural light, but have no fear – there are some interior design tricks that can be used to exaggerate the available light,” promises James
Greenwood,
interior
expert
at
Graham & Brown. Here Greenwood and other interior experts give their tips on how to make dark rooms seem lighter… RIGHT Photo by Minh Pham on Unsplash

Choose gloss paints for walls “Even if it’s the same shade, more light will bounce off a wall painted with a high gloss paint than a wall painted with matte paint,” says Michael Reading, property expert from Housetastic.co.uk, on behalf of ConservatoryLand. “If you have a particularly dark room in your home that doesn’t get much natural light, gloss paints would be the best option for encouraging the light to flow.” Opt for lighter flooring Choosing lighter-coloured flooring can make a room seem much brighter, explains Vicki Foster, interior stylist at furniture and flooring retailer ScS . “Bright flooring, or a light colour on the walls, can lift a room instantly and give the light something to bounce off,” she says. “If you’re looking to maximise the light – if your budget can stretch – opt for a light laminate that will help project light around the room.” Use light or warm colours Using warm shades from the pink, red, orange and yellow colour families, which reflect light, can help bounce available light around the room, Greenwood suggests. “These colour groups burst with joy and have a wide range of shades, depending on how subtle or how much of a statement you want to make in the room,” he says. Try ‘colour drenching’ Instead of painting ceilings, skirting boards or walls different colours, the current trend of colour drenching – where everything is the same shade – can help lighten rooms, Greenwood says. He says this “tried and tested drenching technique blurs the usual sharp lines of a room, so your eyes aren’t drawn to corners”. A B OV E Photo by Andrea Davis on Unsplash

Make use of mirrors Mirrors are one of the most effective ways to reflect more light into a room and make it appear much bigger, says Reading. “Using mirrors in the right places can help disperse any existing natural light that’s flowing into the room,” he explains. “If you want to increase the amount of natural light in your home, hanging mirrors is highly recommended. Invest in good quality, decorative mirrors that you can place in various areas around the home.” Add reflective or glass tiles Glass tiles in kitchens and bathrooms are the next best thing to installing mirrors, Reading says. “In the right lighting, glass tiles can reflect almost 100% of the light that hits them right back into the room.
“If you’re not a fan of glass tiles, highly glossy

or

can
produce a similar effect. Alternatively, consider installing a metallic splashback in the kitchen – this is not only very effective in reflecting natural light into the room, but it’s also very trendy.” Rejig furniture and remove clutter Having too much furniture in the wrong places can stop light flowing through a room and make it feel darker than it actually is, Foster explains.

Giving Children the Best Christmas For a lot of people, Christmas is about spending time with family, but what happens when children have more than one? If not handled carefully, talk of Christmas can descend into conflict and arguments about where children spend the festive season. Top Tips For Child Arrangements Over Christmas: 1. Plan Ahead. Discussions should be had as soon as possible. That way, if there is disagreement, there is time to resolve it. 2. Child First. A good way for parents to try and reach an agreement, and overcome the desire to spend as much time as possible with their children, is to focus on what the child needs or wants. 3. Compromise. It is always best if parents, who know their children and what is best for them, can find a solution between themselves. 4. No Point-Scoring. Parents shouldn’t try and outdo each other, either in terms of time presents. 5. Keep Records. Arrangements are best confirmed in writing, (an email conversation will suffice) so there is a clear record of what has been agreed.
If you need help If they cannot agree, a lot of parents find benefits in using Mediation. This is where an independent, neutral third party assists in discussing and negotiating through a situation.
Shannon Montgomery Solicitor
The process is voluntary and a Mediator cannot make a binding decision, but if parties can reach a solution a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ can be drawn up to record what parties have agreed to. In certain circumstances this be drawn up in to a Court Order, but only if it is deemed of benefit to the child. There are alternatives to Mediation. Collaborative Law is where parties sit around a table (or in different rooms if they don’t want to meet face-to-face) and engage in negotiations with the support of their solicitors providing legal advice. This too is a voluntary process and any decision is not legally binding. A couple can also choose to undertake Arbitration where the decision of the arbitrator is legally binding on both parties. The parties jointly agree an arbitrator, (a professionally trained and qualified expert who effectively performs the role of the Judge) prepares paper evidence and the arbitrator then hears from each party before making a decision. Arbitration is often a very effective way of resolving a dispute where the issues are limited or narrow, such as arrangements for Christmas. If you want advice about Christmas, or any child contact then contact our experienced family law team on 01202 315005 or contact@duttongregory.co.uk

Where to see the wildlife heroes of Sir David Attenborough’s Planet Earth III Returning to BBC One, a new edition of the landmark nature series promises to spark our wildlife wanderlust, says Sarah Marshall. Nearly two decades since the first Planet Earth programme was screened, a new series of the landmark nature franchise is set to impress, shock and captivate audiences. A lot has changed in that time: technology has improved but challenges to the environment are much greater. One thing that remains the same, however, is the sheer wonder of nature.
Filming over the course of five years in 43 countries, the BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) has captured rhinos walking through cities, an octopus birthing at the bottom of the ocean and lions finding new hunting techniques to survive in the desert. “The natural world continues to surprise us,” says Sir David Attenborough. “But since Darwin’s time it has changed beyond recognition, being transformed by a powerful force – us.” No doubt likely to spark a desire to see wildlife spectacles in the flesh, these are a few replicable experiences from the upcoming series.

BUT TERFLIES DOWN HOUSE, KENT In the opening sequence to the first episode we see Sir David walking through meadows close to where 18th century scientist Charles Darwin would have been pondering his theories of evolution. It sets the tone for a series looking at how both animals and humans are adapting to cope with a new climate. Series executive producer Mike Gunton describes it as one of his favourite filming moments from the show. “The meadow was alive with bees and insects, grasshoppers were singing out their melodies all around us and there was an abundance of butterflies floating on the warm air,” he recalls. “Both David and I said it was truly magical and it gave me hope that if we can protect and restore and allow nature to work its miracles, then future generations will be able experience that magic for many years to come.” HOW: Down House, the home of Charles Darwin in Kent, is open to day visitors. Walk around the gardens which served as his open-air laboratory and visit the study where many of his groundbreaking works were written. SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALES PENINSULA VALDES, CHUBUT, ARGENTINA To capture southern right whales along the coast of Argentina, the NHU team adopted a novel technique by strapping a camera to one of the whales. They spent almost six months discussing whether it would be possible, speaking to cetacean specialists and trialling different methods to attach and detach a camera. “We had to find the right whale to attach this camera,” explains cameraman Santiago Cabral. “But it paid off and think I think it helped the sequence a lot. A lot of the filming was done just by jumping in the water, spending time with the whales and finding the right animal that would let us share the space with them. They’re amazing animals and they’re super curious and it was a pleasure to be there with them.” HOW: It’s possible to witness mothers and calves along Argentina’s Patagonian coastline between June and December. Swoop Patagonia offer a five-day self-drive trip to Peninsula Valdes from $1,736pp, including B&B accommodation and car hire. swoop-patagonia.com

This is combined with a growing trend in Irish cuisine for more international influences. “There’s this other side now where you have Irish people and chefs who have travelled and bring back techniques and ideas that meld together quite nicely with seasonal Irish produce,” Skehan notes. Back in Howth with his wife Sofie and children Noah, five, and Oliver, three, Skehan can already see the same love of food getting passed down the generations. “I try not to make my boys obnoxious with food, but they went and ordered separately – one had a bowl of cockles and one had a bowl of mussels – literally the day before yesterday,” he laughs in disbelief.

Visit these secret Spanish spots to make your summer last longer These lesser-known destinations make for the perfect escape this shoulder season, says Sarah Marshall. For many parts of Europe, it’s been a long, hot summer – perhaps a bit too hot for some. But, as temperatures begin to cool, the next few weeks are a great time to discover new areas. Spain has always been a favourite destination for British travellers, who flock to its beaches, yet there’s so much more to the country of rolling vineyards, dramatic mountains and historic hilltop towns. According to data from the Spanish Tourist Office, more and more of us are beginning to realise what’s on offer. “We are pleased to see that our latest tourism statistics show an upwards trend towards exploring more areas of Spain, and particularly some of those areas that are lesser-known,” says Manuel Butler, the office’s UK director. “Our data – which illustrates UK arrivals between April and the end of June 2023 – shows 144% growth to La Rioja, 60% growth to Extremadura, 52% growth to Aragon and 19% growth to Cantabria – all compared to the same period in 2022.” Although remote and off the beaten track, many or these locations are accessible from the UK with budget airlines. Several also have Parador accommodation – historic buildings restored by a government body and made available to the public as hotels. RIGHT Aragon in Spain | Spanish Tourist Board/PA

If you’re not sure where to start, here are some of Spain’s secret locations to be explored. Bielsa, Aragon In the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees, close to Ordesa Natural Park and Spain’s third-highest peak, Monte Perdido, this is a spot for nature lovers and photography fans. The golden eagle and bearded vulture are regularly spotted in a landscape of deep valleys and steep cliffs. Where to stay: At the foot of Monte Perdido, the Parador de Vielsa is a modern building, resembling a large mountain shelter with stone and wood making up its exterior. Guests can opt for a 4×4 excursion to the lookout points of Ordesa, which includes a picnic with artisanal products and free entrance to a local nature museum. From £75 per night B&B. Visit paradores.es/en/paradorde-bielsa. How to get there: Ryanair flies from London Stansted to Zaragoza from £43 one way. Visit ryanair.com.
Calahorra, La Rioja The capital city of the Rioja Baja region in northern Spain has a rich history dating back to the Roman times, notable in its Romanesque and Gothic architecture – including a grand 15th century cathedral. Located along the fertile plains of the Ebro River, it’s the gateway to 500 wineries. If you’re planning ahead for next year, the area is especially known for its Calagurritana Easter week celebrations and Roman Mercaforum – an event featuring birds of prey, roman minting workshops, and recreations of roman military camps flood the streets. Where to stay: Parador de Calahorra, with its Roman pantiles and décor, is built upon the original birthplace of famous writer and speaker Marco Fabio Quintiliano, whose statue is at the entrance to the hotel. Take a tour of the monastery to see numerous illuminated manuscripts and works of art. Extremaduran cuisine, including the iconic Iberian pork, seasoned with paprika, is also an attraction. The Full Monty This brand-new production is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, laughs and heartbreak.
A new production of award-winning smash hit play, The Full Monty, starring TV favourites Danny Hatchard (EastEnders), Jake Quickenden (X Factor, I’m A Celebrity…) and Bill Ward (Emmerdale, Coronation Street) is heading on a UK Tour, coming to Mayflower Theatre from 7 – 11 November. We caught up with the cast to chat about bringing the production across the country and why this heartwarming comedy is still relevant to audiences today. 25 years since the movie, The Full Monty is having a resurgence, with the Disney+ spin-off series and this new touring production. Why do you think the story has stood the test of time? Danny Hatchard: Is there a more iconic working-class comedy than The Full Monty? I’d argue not. Especially one that covers so many incredibly important topics that are still very relevant today… Fathers’ rights, depression, suicide, impotence, homosexuality, unemployment, body image. Tackling important subjects like these whilst adding a sprinkle of nostalgia and a dash of humour takes the audience on a 2-hour emotional rollercoaster filled with tears and belly laughter. This show is not only a cocktail of excellence, but also hugely relatable to both men and women. Jake Quickenden: It’s a story for everyone and it has everything – love, humour, sensitive subjects, the lot. So many people can relate to the characters, they draw on relationships that affect everyone, ex-wife, ex-wife’s new husband, kid that lives with mum, lads being skint, the list goes on and on. It means that’s everyone who watches it can feel like its speaking to them, and then of course, there is the brilliant humour, the dancing and everything that goes with it!

“A play with jokes”, is how he described it. It is of course very funny indeed, but the comedy actually comes from the very real tragedy that all these characters are facing in their lives… different circumstances, different starting points, but real grief and tragedy nevertheless. What are you most looking forward to about touring with this production? DH: Bigger audiences. When you know you’ve got something good you want to share it with the world. So, the bigger the audience the better. JQ: It sounds obvious but literally being somewhere different every week or so keeps the energy alive, we know that all the audiences are seeing it for the first time, and it helps the electric keep buzzing onstage. Plus, we get a chance to potter about during the day and see all these different places and hang out with cast members. It’s also pretty cool that friends and family from all over the UK can try and get to a show as there is usually one heading to a theatre near them. BW: There’s an awful lot of heart, warmth, and joy in this production, and it’s a huge amount of fun to do. Sharing a bit of that with the good people of the UK in these

seeing this production of The Full Monty? DH: Pure unadulterated happiness. JQ: The main thing is – be yourself, never give up, never listen to what anyone thinks and just do you! The story is sad at times, but every character overcomes their worries in some way and ends with success! It’s a feelgood show which keeps people laughing even when they are crying. BW: This is a very beautiful, heartwarming and at times very moving story. It’s also very, very funny indeed and an absolute riot at the end. A properly banging night out at the theatre. Book now to relive the music of the 90’s and have a great night out in the company of our group of lads as they work to put on the show of their lives. www.mayflower.org.uk Photos by Ellie Kurttz

Cue the damson decor trend to snug up your space This sumptuous shade makes a plummy choice, says Sam Wylie-Harris.
If you’re in the mood for an autumn refresh and switching out your soft pastels for something more punchy, the dark tones of damson are where it’s at. Bridging the gap between burgundy and rich, blue-black berry tones, damson is an ode to comfort with its velvety aesthetic – and creates an appealing aspect wherever you style these dark violet hues. Indeed, John Lewis & Partners cite damson as the ‘colour to cocoon’ you – and it’s been unveiled as the shade of the season for autumn/winter 2023 by the John Lewis Colour Council.

“Damson is the perfect shade for autumn, both a bold and harmonious colour that can be incorporated effortlessly into the home,” says Melanie Archer, John Lewis colour expert. Opt for cushions or a throw in the autumnal hue for a pop of colour in a living room or bedroom, she suggests, “while open shelving units are a brilliant way to showcase coloured glassware.” Beyond

wallpaper and paint designers have also incorporated swish rich purples into their collections. “Deep and rich colours such as damson or plum purple are a go-to for this season as they reflect the warm tones found in nature at this time, and create a cocooning effect in the home,” says James Greenwood, interiors expert at Graham & Brown.
For a cosy effect in a bedroom, he suggests plum wallpaper teamed with a similar paint shade for a consistent colour scheme. If these dark colours seem overwhelming, but you’re looking to dip your toe into the damson trend, Greenwood says something a little bit lighter still provides those warming hues, while not overwhelming the space. Architect George Clarke: Sustainability and style can go hand-in-hand in the home The TV presenter and architect tells Lisa Salmon how homeowners can make sustainability a priority. TV architect George Clarke is known for creating Amazing Spaces – but they can only be truly amazing if they’re kind to the planet, he says. The genial presenter of shows including George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Old House, New Home is a master at making all sorts of homes look great, but is keen to highlight that style and sustainability can – and should – go handin-hand in the home. “Designers and product designers who care about the environment absolutely care about what something looks like – a million per cent,” he says. “Someone who’s passionate enough about the product to make it green is not going to design something that looks ugly – they’re going to make it look really stylish at the same time.” It’s key for homeowners to ask questions about where products, fixtures and fittings have come from and what they’re made of, he says. “My parents’ generation didn’t ask where things came from. But my kids now will say, why are we buying that, it’s come halfway around the world? Why aren’t we buying local?” He points out that while in the past British products may have been more expensive than some items made abroad, “It’s changed enormously over the last 10 years – now you can buy British, you can buy green, and you can buy it affordably.”

in such a way that you use less water without compromising on the efficiency. I think that’s the most important thing.” Clarke has helped create the Gaia sofa range for British sofa company Sofology, designed using sustainable fabrics and easily dismantled so each individual part can be easily recycled or repurposed. He says such pieces of furniture should be part of the circular economy – where components, objects and appliances can be fully recycled repeatedly. “I’ve been banging on about the circular economy for 15 years,” he says. “Certain objects and appliances in the home don’t get reused and repurposed, they get taken to the tip. We shouldn’t have the amount of landfill that we’ve got in this country – it’s ridiculous. “We’ve still got a long way to go when it comes to items in the home designed in a circular economy way. Yes, they can be Clarke, 49, says that “back in the day” –

Solar Savings: Reducing Your Energy Bills One of the most compelling reasons to go solar is the significant cost savings it offers. With innovative financing options and government incentives, the upfront costs are becoming increasingly manageable. So, not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, but you’re also reducing the strain on your wallet. Storing Sunshine: The Magic of Battery Storage Solar panels capture sunlight, but what happens when the sun goes down? That’s where battery storage comes into play. Imagine harnessing the daytime energy and storing it for use at night or during cloudy days. Battery storage systems are the magic behind uninterrupted power supply from solar. These systems are more

Autumn décor ideas for a seasonal refresh Time to get cosy and prep the home with some nifty touches, says Sam Wylie-Harris.a
With a nip in the air and change in seasons comes a new dawn – and a natural desire to create a comfy, snug space ahead of the cooler months. Alongside sumptuous textures, polishing up warm woods and ambient lighting, now’s also the time for seasonal candles. Here, experts share their top tips for an autumnal aesthetic… Forage for farmers’ market-style floral displays “As we prepare for colder, darker months, it’s all about getting cosy and adding some extra touches that will make you feel cocooned and comforted,” says Charlotte Reddington, one half of styling and organising duo, Style Sisters. She says one of her favourite things things about autumn is the rich variety of textures and tones, from in parks and gardens.

crunchy leaves to the abundance of changing colours
“Be inspired inside your home and think about how you can weave these elements into rooms,” suggests Reddington. “This can be through the addition of a statement autumnal floral display, including a rich array of crimson reds, dark greens and burnt orange.” And with pumpkin season in full swing, don’t forget this colourful squash can be styled with foliage, berries and autumn wreaths.

Embrace cosier fabrics “Shorter daylight hours mean only one thing – cups of guilt-free hot chocolate and plenty of movie marathons,” says Dani Burroughs, head of product for Snug. “To get into the autumnal spirit, start by swapping out summer fabrics for cosier ones, like soft velvets or fuzzy boucle,” enthuses Burroughs. “Bring in warm, inviting colours – think rich browns, deep reds and rustic oranges. Not only will they help transition from summer to autumn, they’ll also create a relaxing and warm feeling that’s perfect for those lazy evenings on the sofa.” Introduce ambient lighting Clever lighting can totally transform a room and the overall atmosphere, highlights Reddington. “A harsh overhead light isn’t always the cosiest for an autumn evening at home on the sofa! Think about placing a large floor lamp or table lamps for some mood lighting, which will create a calming ambience.” She continues: “And with darker evenings as the clocks go back, it’s an important factor to consider for maximum home comfort.”

Embrace the biophilic trend “Bring some new life into your home ahead of the colder months by incorporating air-purifying houseplants into décor,” says Rikki Fothergill, bathroom expert at Big Bathroom Shop. Especially in bathrooms and kitchens, which she says is hugely beneficial for improving the quality of indoor air, regulating humidity levels and reducing the risk of more serious problems, like damp or even mould. “Look to include species like ivy and fern as these are known to be great for maintaining air quality”, suggests Fothergill. “Spider plants are perfect too, and make for a great addition to any bathroom touching on the biophilic trend.” Scent the season One of the very first things you notice (sometimes unknowingly) when you enter a room isn’t just how it looks, but how it smells, notes Reddington. “Scent can evoke memories, elevate an atmosphere, and help to change your mood – from energising and lifting, to relaxing and even aiding sleep… we really think it’s one of the most important aspects of a home.”

WITH GR ACE’S ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND In the quaint store on Ringwood High Street, With Grace’s team eagerly awaited the festive season, radiating warmth and excitement. Their meticulous preparations promised an enchanting experience this year. Plush reindeer and snowmen beckoned to children. Shelves held handcrafted ornaments evoking a winter wonderland, and a towering Christmas tree stood adorned with ornaments. The store has became a symphony of colour and light, exuding the spirit of giving and happiness. Aromas of Christmas candles filled the air. The grand unveiling drew gasps of delight and eyes filled with wonder. People, young and old, explored every nook, and the team’s dedication shone brighter than any star. As Christmas draws near, With Grace has became a sanctuary of joy, a haven of love, and a reminder of the beauty in simple moments. ROAD TEST: SSANGYONG KOR ANDO – A MORE THAN WORTHY SUV CONTENDER You could be forgiven for thinking that it’s an SUV from a mainstream European manufacturer. It has a somewhat old school premium look and although a little ‘heavy’ on the rear styling is obviously no automotive bargain basement in the quality department. There are downsides such as thinly spread dealerships, potentially larger than average depreciation and euro rivals that offer more power and a better economy. National Trust Island Garden open for free to City’s residents and visitors Unique ‘island’ in the heart of Winchester given planting makeover to help it withstand pressures of climate change. The unique micro-climate of a small ‘island’ in the middle of Winchester’s River Itchen has helped to give it a new lease of life in the face of increasing climate change pressure. The hidden garden space, which sits in the middle of the famous rushing River Itchen chalk stream behind the National Trust’s Winchester City Mill has been transformed with tropical planting. The new scheme will allow the garden to tolerate better a range of climatic conditions including prolonged periods of hot dry weather and heavy rainfall. Designed in partnership with horticulture students from nearby Sparsholt Agricultural College, the island garden can be enjoyed for free by visitors as an extension of the Mill’s indoor café, giving people a peaceful space in which to enjoy homemade dishes or a cup of coffee. The garden was given this much needed re-vamp after years of limited planting and with unstable trees in its centre and a grassy area which made accessing the far end of the garden difficult. A new network of paths gives visitors access to the planting as well as allowing them to sit and relax as the river rushes by on either side of the garden’s flint walls, Planting this garden with beautiful tropical plants such as dahlias and banana plants and laying a new terrace for seating also fulfils one of the original aims of National Trust founder Octavia Hill; “We all want quiet. We all want beauty…we all need space”.

Jennifer Harbrow, National Trust Senior Gardener: “We wanted to make more of this unique garden setting and create something that was really welcoming to our visitors whilst at the same time more tolerant of our more extreme weather conditions. “The aim was to use the natural placement of the garden - a microclimate because of its unusual situation on the River Itchen - to craft a foliage focused space. Some of my favourite plants are the musa sikkimensis or ‘Bengal Tiger’ and the dark olive leaves of colocasia because of their unique sculptural qualities”. This project has only been made possible by generous donors, local supporter groups and donations from the general public. Autumn food is fresh and prepared on-site daily, with cookies, cakes and scones baked in the Mill’s kitchen. Seasonal specials include cheese and ale scones and mill-wheel shortbread. Visitors can also read about the intriguing history that makes up this 1,000-year-old site, browse the cosy second-hand bookshop and spot recent otter sightings via the ottercam - part of the Mill’s Otterwatch programme that monitors wildlife visiting the mill race beneath Mill. 6tbsp cornflour
1.
Mix the cornflour with a very generous amount of salt and pepper in a mixing bowl, add the strips of lamb and really work the cornflour into the lamb for a minute or so. Set aside.
350g lamb leg steaks, cut into 1cm-wide strips Vegetable oil, for frying 1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced into half moons
2. Heat a large frying pan over a medium-high heat, pour in about 2.5cm vegetable oil and bring to frying temperature (add a little bit of a lamb strip: if it sizzles immediately, the oil is hot enough). Line a plate with a double layer of kitchen paper.
1 red pepper, cored, deseeded and cut into very thin strips 5 spring onions, thinly sliced from root to tip, reserve some for garnish
3. While the oil is heating up, place a small saucepan over a medium heat, add all the sauce ingredients and whisk together until no lumps of cornflour remain and the mixture is smooth. Heat the sauce through, but do not let it bubble or burn, then remove from the heat.
Maldon sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper Steamed white rice, to serve For the sauce:
4. Fry the lamb strips in batches in the hot oil for about two to three minutes, or until very crisp on the outside. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to the paper-lined plate to drain. 5. Heat another large frying pan over a high heat, add a drizzle of vegetable oil and stir-fry

the onion and red pepper until browned a little. Add the lamb strips followed by the

sauce and toss together until evenly coated with the sauce, then add the spring onions
3tbsp rice vinegar
and combine well.
2tbsp light soy sauce 2tbsp cornflour
6. Serve immediately scattered with the reserved spring onions and alongside steamed white rice. This needs no accompaniment.

Oishii Bournemouth’s brand new authentic Asian dining experience. Nestled at the heart of 1812 in Bournemouth you will discover Oishii, an Asian inspired tapas and grill restaurant. As you make your way into Oishii you are immediately struck by the beautiful decor, surrounded by dark wood, cherry blossom and ambient lighting it creates a classy and intimate atmosphere. Head chef Cheryl Tio warmly welcomed us into the restaurant and told us a little about her background with over 20 years experience

We decided to really put them to the test, taking with us a vegetarian and someone who, as a rule, doesn’t tend to like fish! The question is, can they cater for everyone? Spoiler alert, they not only delivered but surpassed expectation! We settled down to peruse the menu and were in awe of the choice on offer to us. Our vegetarian pointed out that they often find options limited, the decision is almost made for them when eating out – with little choice on most menus. At Oishii however they struggled to choose because there
