How to style Pantone’s 2024 Colour of the Year – Peach Fuzz Cue this chic, coral hue, says Sam Wylie-Harris. A joyous, uplifting shade, even the name is playful… Pantone’s Peach Fuzz is sure to be a big hit in the world of interiors. Cited by the Pantone Colour Institute as ‘a velvety gentle peach tone whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul,’ this pastel hue is described as ‘a colour radiant with warmth and modern elegance’. According to the Pantone pros, it’s ‘a shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless’ – a far cry from jewel tones in past Colours of the Year, such as 2023’s Viva Magenta.

“One thing I love about Peach Fuzz is that, although it’s a calming and connecting shade, it also plays perfectly into having fun with your interiors,” says Lucy Mather, design expert from home furnishings retailer Arighi Bianchi. For me, it’s about using this colour in an unexpected way, and choosing accessories and furniture that make you smile or take a second look.” As Mather points out, accessories in shades of peach that make you smile and express your personality will give your home an individual finishing touch that feels bang up to date. “I’m predicting smaller accessories like clocks, lamps, cushions, candles, artwork, etc, in shades of peach will be everywhere in 2024 – I love the sense of joy and playfulness they bring,” enthuses Mather.

It also harks back to the nostalgic vibe associated with retro pastel colours, suggests Mather, which has made a significant comeback in interior design: “Remember the retro peach bathroom suite anyone? “Thankfully, Peach Fuzz isn’t too alternative,” says Matt Thomas, design director, Apollo Blinds. “It looks fabulous in kitchens, and we predict it will be introduced as a soothing accent in bedrooms. “For me this is the perfect colour to give an instant update to a kitchen, working alongside door cabinets in white or wood finishes,” suggests Thomas. “It will also complement forest green and blue finishes that have been emerging in the past couple of years as the hero colour for the kitchen. “A colour injection at kitchen windows can totally transform a room – so why not with Peach Fuzz!” Furthermore, in terms of aesthetics, he says the softness of peach can instantly add a touch of sophistication and modernity to a bedroom. Think blinds, cushions, throws and rugs to style with soft linens and neutrals. And for an added bonus: “Mid-century style furniture pairs really well with the colour,” highlights Thomas. “Add texture, such as boucle [or velvet] to keep it contemporary.” Words by Sam Wylie-Harris, PA

Hello!

I’m Sally, founder of Rock Paper Scissors Creative Interiors – I write every month for the magazine; this month I thought I would share a bit about me and where my long-term passion for design stems from... Having completed my degree in Textile Design, over 15 years ago, I went on to work for some prestigious interiors brands, based out of Chelsea Harbour. Leaving a full-time job, almost a year ago, I took a leap of faith, to follow my long-term desire to set up my own interior design business; I opened my little shop nestled in the village of Burley, in the New Forest. The shop has become a hive of creativity, with downstairs full of beautiful, hand-picked homewares, many of which have been hand crafted by local trades people and artists. My design studio situated upstairs is by appointment only, so that I can guide you through the collections of fabrics, wallpapers, paints and tiles from an eclectic mix

of brands and some smaller independent makers, who produce equally as stunning designs. The service extends beyond the shop to a local work room, where the magic happens, the fabric gets transformed into curtains, Roman blinds and cushions, all beautifully hand finished and then professionally installed and dressed, into your home. All sizes of jobs are welcome from one room transformations through to ambitious full house renovations, extensions and self builds – Pop in or book an appointment via email hello@rpscreativeinteriors.com

Romantic alternatives to red roses on Valentine’s Day Leaf through some different blooms that spell romance. The overpriced blooms could be upstaged by other romantic flowers, whether it be heaven-scented stocks, lilies and freesias, delicate lisianthus, limonium or multihued alstroemeria, with a sprinkling of the popular snowy white filler, gypsophila. “The world is divided into those that want red flowers and those who don’t give a jot as long as they have beautiful flowers,” says Judith Blacklock, founder of the acclaimed Judith Blacklock Flower School.

Jo Reason, director of brand at Bloom & Wild, says: “People want gifts to be more meaningful than ever, and so are putting in extra thought and care into choosing the right bouquet for the person, rather than sticking to the generic dozen red roses. “Our quickest sell-out last year was hand-tied, pink bouquets that included roses, chrysanthemum and tulips, as well as some more unusual stems like calla lilies, ornithogalum and campanula.” For a completely different wow factor, you may want to go for bulbs instead – you can buy bouquets with the bulbs still attached, which can then be replanted. “The Scottie is a real stand-out, with its ruffly, UK grown, orange double tulips (with their bulbs still on, which can then be replanted) and pops of pink and yellow roses,” says Reason.

IF YO U WANT RED… “Tulips and anemones are the obvious alternatives, although a quality anemone is not inexpensive,” Blacklock advises. “Deciduous foliage is too soft to use if it has come back into leaf. Think of evergreens such as Hedera helix (ivy), eucalyptus, Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree) or Photinia ‘Red Robin’. “Twigs bursting into leaf are gorgeous. Salix (pussy willow) always looks good, as does Viburnum opulus (snowball tree) – although the garden shrub Viburnum tinus has lovely black berries at the moment and is a wonderful filler.” If you are adding stems of pussy willow, keep them out of water to stop them dropping, Blacklock advises. Jonathan Thorneycroft, creative strategist at Blooming Haus, recommends the single gilded red rose, an elevated take on the red rose, or a bouquet of hot pink roses. “A more budget-conscious option instead of red roses are carnations,” he suggests. And if you are styling your Valentine’s Day flowers at home, add some jasmine foliage for a romantic edge. ABOVE A gilded rose | Blooming Haus/PA

B U D G E T- C O N SC IO U S HAC KS It may seem more meaningful if you can add foliage and stems which you have grown yourself to any bouquet, says self-taught expert gardener and influencer Anya Lautenbach, known on Instagram as ‘Anya the Garden Fairy’, whose new book The Money-Saving Gardener (DK) is published on February 8. She recommends hellebores, commonly known as winter roses, with their soft nodding flowers. To stop them wilting, make two shallow cuts along the stem before putting them in water, she suggests. “Dogwood stems come in amazing colours of red, which could be a good addition to a display, along with ivy, rose hips and various branches from the garden. You can create spectacular arrangements from things in your garden.”

Why Maldivian paradise could finally be within budget Famously one of the priciest places in the world, new direct flights have made the Maldives more accessible than ever. For well over half a century, the Maldives has been synonymous with a number of things: the bluest of seas, the softest of shores, the heavenliest of honeymoons – and the steepest of price tags, with the average nightly room rate coming in at around 2K. As one of the world’s most exclusive destinations, it has long lured those with extra-deep pockets, but the arrival of a new direct flight from the UK could be about to open it up to a whole new set of travellers.

This is big news for a destination that boasts some of the most expensive places to stay in the world (a night at the Conrad’s underwater villa will set you back up to £39,000). But there’s renewed hope that Virgin Atlantic’s brand-new service from London Heathrow will bring much-needed competition to the route previously monopolised by British Airways – and with competition in the skies comes lower fares. The signs are already looking good, with Sir Richard Branson’s airline announcing that the 10-hour service to capital Male will increase from three times a week to daily next winter, starting in October. Paradise, it seems, has never been so popular. Sprinkled across the Indian Ocean like little sandy jewels to the south-west of Sri Lanka, the Maldives consists of 1,192 low-lying tropical islands in sapphire seascapes that barely seem possible. For first-timers, here’s a helpful introduction… A B OV E & L E F T Sun Siyam Resort in the Maldives | Sun Siyam/PA

ISLAND LIFE Despite popular belief, there’s more to the Maldives than infinity pools and sunset cocktails. A nation of great history and heritage, there’s culture to discover for those intrepid enough to seek it. The obvious place to start is Male, the country’s capital and home to the majority of the 520,000 population. A densely populated island of high-rises, ancient banyan trees and beautiful mosques, it offers an eye-opening glimpse into what real life in paradise is really like. But for a truly authentic taste of local life, nothing comes close to one of the many island villages. One such place is Kudafari, a 20-minute boat ride from Siyam World and a whole world away from the gloss and glitz of the resort. Life is slow and simple, filled with impassioned games of football on sandy pitches and the nose-tingling aroma of homecooked curries drifting from kitchens. How to plan your trip Virgin Atlantic Holidays (virginholidays.com; 0344 557 3859) offers a seven-night holiday with four nights at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi (B&B) basis and three nights at Siyam World (all-inclusive) from £3,449 per person, including flights and seaplane transfers. As ever, with a staggering 50 acts across four stages, the festival also features the cream of music talent from the BCP region the always popular party starters Mother Ukers, Americana quartet Sixteen String Jack, formidable Celtic punk band Blackwater County and festival favourites such as folk singer songwriter Gaz Brookfield. Add to that the festival’s famous family-friendly atmosphere - there are free circus shows on Saturday and Sunday as well as daily kids’ entertainers, dinosaur shows and activities - as well as a pocket-friendly pricing structure and once again Poole Harbour Festival delivers all ingredients to kick start a fabulous summer by the sea. “We’re so grateful our amazing regulars keep coming back year after year and they’re joined by more and more music fans attracted by the star names on the bill - it’s the party weekend that Poole is now famous for!” adds Ben. “You can help make the event even better by taking advantage of the much cheaper launch offer tickets – this helps us plan and book the facilities needed.” Poole Harbour Festival opens at 5pm on Friday, noon on Saturday and 11am on Sunday, closing at 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 7pm on Sunday. Weekend tickets from £11 child, £33 adult, £86 family. Tickets available now at www.pooleharbourfestival.com. “Last year’s festival was the best yet in terms of line up and the feedback we received was really positive - we’re definitely putting Poole Harbour Festival on the map,” says festival organiser Ben Dyas. “Last year we had so many last minute ticket buyers we did have some queues, but we’ve learned a lot from that and as well as our best ever line up, this year we’ll have more and bigger bars, many extra toilets, easier entry and more staff and security across the site and with better signage for things like water points and toilets. It’s going to be a brilliant weekend!” In the dance tent, a strong DJ bill is topped by Lisa Lashes with top ten chart regulars Ultrabeat, cutn-paste king Jaguar Skills and Global Underground

Simple ways to change the look of a small room

Remodel your space with a New Year refresh, says Sam Wylie-Harris. If you’re eyeing up your living room, wondering how to give it a new lease of life, and are in the mood for a quick fix, a little imagination can go a long way. “The key to refreshing your decor and switching up your space for the New Year is all in the detail,” says Dara Huang, interior designer and founder of Dara Maison, who has partnered with Samsung to share her top tips on how to transform your living area. “It’s about clever adjustments that can make an area feel brand new.” She says adding new decorative pieces can put a fresh twist on existing colour schemes, along with spaceshifting ‘illusions’, which can breathe new life into a small room, or forgotten corner. Mottisfont in Hampshire displays over 50 humorous illustrations by one of Britain’s best-loved artists, Heath Robinson. Heath Robinson at War (20 January – 14 April) showcases a wide selection of Heath Robinson’s drawings from both World Wars. Popular among civilians and soldiers alike, Heath Robinson’s war cartoons perfectly demonstrate his dry, ironic humour even in the face of national despair. In each World War, Heath Robinson proved his ability to counter, by the application of gentle satire and absurdity, both the pompous German propaganda and the fear and depression gendered by the horrors of war. stream of letters from both troops at the front and the public at home thanking him for bringing a little joy into their lives. As part of the exhibition experience, you’ll be able to hear transcripts of some of these letters – a poignant reminder of the impact humour and creativity has on public morale during difficult times. “You may remember that you very kindly drew a picture for my magazine when I was with the 23rd Div – the Xmas of 1916–17. I am now returning to ask you whether you could possibly find the time to draw me a little picture for a Divisional Xmas Card for the 19th. Div with whom I am now serving. I am most diffident about asking and am only urged to by the knowledge of the very great pleasure a Xmas Card with a drawing by you would give all our men.” - George Hawes, Lt Colonel, 19th Division, France, 28 July 1918

Many of the letters suggested subjects for Heath Robinson’s pen: “In no man’s land there are many small gardens still more or less intact, although the houses are now mere heaps of debris. For some time past the weary waiters in the trenches have been gazing with longing eyes at the strawberry blossoms; when the fruit is ripe we feel that all we need is Mr Heath Robinson to picture Thomas Atkins [slang expression for the British soldier] on his stomach culling the luscious berries at night by the light of a glow-worm.” - Captain Vinen, 1st Gloucestershire Regiment, Flanders, 3 June 1915

William Heath Robinson is an artist whose work is integral to British cultural heritage. His name entered the language as early as 1912 and is still in use to describe the kind of ad hoc contraptions that featured in many of his cartoons - including his war-themed illustrations. Trained at the Royal Academy Schools, Heath Robinson’s ambition was to become a landscape painter. However, to establish himself financially, the artist turned to book illustration. He illustrated works by Poe, Shakespeare, and Kipling, as well as writing and illustrating his own books, which brought his sense of humour to the fore. He became acclaimed for comical drawings for magazines.

BATHE WITH SEAWEED An indigenous Irish therapy, seaweed bathing has been practised for 300 years and sailors would historically use the marine algae to soothe rope burns. It’s also extremely nutritious, great for detoxifying the body, and is a rich source of iodine and vital for the health of your thyroid – the gland responsible for regulating metabolism and energy levels. Lifestyle and spa brand VOYA are experts in the field of seaweed bathing. Company co-founder Mark Walton says: “The seaweed bath is a remedy. It’s like a poultice, it draws out toxins and replaces them with essential vitamins and minerals that the seaweed has taken from the sea. “A hot seaweed bath is better than a wet steam sauna because the sea greens rebalance skin chemistry instead of dehydrating it. The electrolytic magnetic action of our signature product VOYA Lazy Days [featuring Fucus Serratus seaweed hand-harvested from the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Ireland] releases excess body fluids from congested cells and dissolves fatty wastes through the skin, replacing them with depleted minerals, particularly potassium and iodine.” HOW: A 50-minute bath ritual in Strandhill, Sligo, Ireland, costs from €45. EMBRACE HOT/COLD THERAPY The art of ice swimming after a steaming hot sauna has been celebrated in countries like Finland and Lithuania for centuries. Benefits include stress reduction, mental clarity, improved circulation and better sleep. Now it’s possible to sample the benefits of hot/cold contrast therapy at Cornwall’s new Wild Spa, launched at the St Moritz Hotel in collaboration with local Nordic spa experts Water and Stone. Sara Last, St Moritz Hotel and Cowshed Spa director of operations, advises: “The thermal contrasts offer a holistic approach to enhance both physical and mental wellbeing with the warmth serving to dilate blood vessels, increase blood flow and relax tense muscles. This is believed to aid soothing chronic pain, reducing stiffness and promoting overall muscle recovery. “On the flip side, cold spa treatments act as a natural anti-inflammatory, reducing swelling and providing relief to sore muscles. The contrast of hot and cold therapies can create a powerful synergy, accelerating the recovery process after intense physical activity.” HOW: A Wild Spa Elemental package costs from HARNESS THE POWER OF NATURE

improved wellbeing are much easier to access. But even in urban centres, it’s possible to find pockets of calm – step into a pool of sunlight, take a walk through the park, or sit and listen to birds singing. “Don’t underestimate nature’s positive role in your wellbeing,” says Jenny Stewart, co-founder of Isle of Wight-based Balance+Glo, who offer retreats, yoga and fitness workshops, and stand-up paddleboard yoga sessions in natural surroundings. “Getting out and observing nature has significant benefits for our physical, emotional, and mental health. These include increased quality of rest (with a positive impact on our circadian rhythm), improved physical health, a calming effect on a busy mind, reduction of stress and anxiety, a sense of belonging, and alignment with a natural rhythm.” HOW: A two-night Spring Wellness Retreat (April 1214) costs from £725pp, including accommodation in a farmhouse room or glamping and ferry car crossing with Wightlink. Shrek the Musical Joint interview with Joanna Clifton and Antony Lawrence. Get ready to leave your troubles Far Far Away and embark on an unforgettable adventure filled with laughter, love, and ogre-sized fun. Between the 20 - 25 February join Shrek and his trusty sidekick Donkey at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton as they set out on a quest to defeat the fearsome dragon and rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona. With a heartwarming story and a cast of unforgettable characters, this musical extravaganza is a journey you won’t want to miss. The stellar cast is led by theatre legend Antony Lawrence as Shrek, whose ‘powerful voice fills the theatre and makes him instantly lovable’ (Twit Celeb Gossip). Strictly Come Dancing star and leading lady Joanne Clifton is ‘An absolute revelation as Princess Fiona’ (Cheshire Live).

S H R E K T H E M U S I C A L | W H AT ’ S O N

The story of Shrek will be familiar to a lot of people seeing the show – how do you ensure the story, and your characters’ romance, feels fresh? AL: The great thing about doing Shrek, because it’s a well known story, is that we already know the characters. There’s the double-edged sword of wanting to make the characters your own and the relationships your own, but at the same time there is an element of audience expectation. It’s finding that balance of wanting to give them what they know, but at the same time we want to find our Shrek and our Fiona and our chemistry between ourselves. That’s what makes doing a live version so fantastic, as you get the best of both worlds. There’s a lot of farting and burping in the show – how do you stop from getting the giggles when faced with such gloriously silly material? AL: Normally as an actor, when you’re on stage, if you feel like you need to burp, you’re fighting that urge. The great thing about playing a character like Shrek, who is very flatulent and farts and burbs all the way through the show, is that if I need to burp, I’ll just burp, at any point, and it’ll be completely natural. JC: But if it comes out at an unexpected time, that’s going set me off, and I am bad for laughing. I don’t know whether it’s the nerves, the adrenaline, whatever, any tiny thing that happens, I will start laughing. So if you burp at an unexpected time, I’m obviously going to laugh.

Did you know each other before being cast? JC: No, not at all! AL: We were performing at an event called Big Night of Musicals in Manchester in February and we had a couple of hours of rehearsal and that’s when we met for the first time. I remember you came in and said, ‘Hello, show husband’. That was the very first thing you said to me. JC: I’m happy that we’re going in the main rehearsal period having already met and done that performance with Brandon Lee Sears. We’ve become friends so it’s really nice going into rehearsals with those relationships in place.

of the hottest interior trends for 2024

Here’s how to dial up your decor in the coming year, says Sam Wylie-Harris. From fashionable furnishings to luxe lighting, if you’re looking for inspiration and thinking about a feel-good fix to up your interiors game, designers are already predicting how your space could take shape. And with so many collections, schemes and tweaks at every turn, we’ve asked the experts at leading home design platform Houzz to narrow it down and share their forecast…

TR AD ITIO NAL WALL TRE ATM ENTS “An interest in traditional materials and crafts has been growing for a while and this looks set to continue, with traditional wall treatments such as limewash paint and tadelakt [a Moroccan style of plaster] becoming more popular,” says Houzz UK editor, Victoria Harrison. These wall treatments create a beautiful suede-like texture, and with recent developments meaning they’re more readily available in different shades, Harrison says they are seen being used much more. Furthermore, Harrison says during the autumn design fairs lighting closely resembled art installations, rather than purely for illumination. “We expect to see this crossing over into homes next year, with statement wall sconces shaping up to be a top trend.”

SQ U I S HY, S U M PTU O U S S E ATIN G Emphasis is firmly on comfort in the home next year with designers embracing curved silhouettes, plushly padded upholstery, and sumptuous textiles you just want to sink into, says Harrison. “We’re seeing less rigid lines, instead they have been replaced with curved angles and plump cushions.” Harrison thinks texture will also be key, with bouclé continuing its reign in mellow tonal hues, but also expects to see more fuzzy Sherpa and sheepskin designs in comforting tones of beige and caramel emerge.

“The Scandi cool tones that dominated for so long have been usurped by warm, earthy neutrals, such as taupe, clay and brown tones,” notes Stephanie Bailey, interior designer, Decorbuddi. “It feels like we’re in our cocoon era. Comfort is king, but so is practicality – we’re seeing a rise in people asking for sumptuous seating, but in a modern way.” Bailey continues. “That might mean soft shapes and finishes combined with clever modular solutions, hidden ottomans or built-in storage, for example. Bouclé still has a place, although we’re seeing it move on from the living room to the bedroom. Sheepskin and shearling are definitely on the rise – there is a reassuring sense of comfort and authenticity in these natural materials.” They also layer well and add texture, when used in combination with warm neutral wall finishes, she adds. What is a lowcarbon garden and how do you achieve it? Chelsea designers explain the importance of low-carbon gardens in the fight against climate change. Looking to reduce your carbon footprint in your outdoor space this year? Low-carbon gardens are going to be among the highlights of this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, but what exactly are they? Well, they favour planting over hard landscaping, creating a softer, more heavily planted space which is usually much more environmentally friendly and “will also pay back with a bounty of wildlife that you can enjoy”, explains Harry Holding, award-winning designer of this year’s RHS No Adults Allowed Chelsea Flower Show garden.

Use small plants If you plant small plants you’ll cause less disturbance to the soil and have more chance of the plant establishing, says Massey. Alternatively, grow from seed. “Reducing the production of plants, the plastic in the pots, the time it takes to transport, the watering, the storage, all that costs money, energy and carbon.” If you don’t have time to grow from seed, buy bare root plants (when they are dormant in winter), which generally come wrapped in newspaper, not planted in a plastic pot full of compost, and you can plant them straight into the ground, he advises. Harvest rainwater “Disconnect your downpipes and store the rainwater in water butts, which is going to be lower carbon than running mains water, which requires a lot of processing to make it safe to drink,” says Massey. MORGAN’S ELECTRIC FUTU RE Morgan Motor Company is planning its electric future and sharing details of a new development vehicle that will act as the forerunner to all future electric Morgan sports cars. Referred to as ‘XP-1’, the experimental prototype will provide key information to the engineers and designers at Morgan as they embark on creating the company’s first production electric models. Developed over the last 12 months by Morgan’s team of engineers based in Malvern, Worcestershire, XP-1 is based on Super 3’s aluminium platform. The striking prototype is not intended for production and following 12 months of design and build, XP-1 will now embark on a comprehensive testing programme

These wedding trends will be everywhere in 2024 Events specialists reveal their wedding trend predictions, from flowers to fashion. The festive season is a popular time to pop the question, which means a slew of newly betrothed couples will be starting to think about plans for their weddings in the new year. From venues and menus to dresses and decor, there are lots of decisions to make when it comes to planning wedding ceremonies and receptions. So, what themes will we be seeing in the coming seasons? We asked floral, food and fashion experts to predict the wedding trends set to be big in 2024…

G O IN G G REEN According to research from wedding planning app Bridebook, green has been the most popular accent colour for nuptials recently – and that’s set to continue in 2024. “As winter weddings embrace the enchanting allure of rustic vibes and festive green tones, we witness a shift towards cosy celebrations that evoke a sense of intimacy and warmth,” says Bridebook founder and CEO, Hamish Shephard. “Couples are clearly being drawn to the authenticity and intimacy that rustic aesthetics provide, and want to create a wedding atmosphere that feels both timeless and meaningful.” From mint to emerald, green lends itself well to seasonal foliage arrangements. “Many of our couples have been asked for naturally beautiful designs, which look like they have been freshly assembled,” says Marron. “For autumn or winter weddings, this looks like long runners of ivy, pine, eucalyptus and more down the centres of tables, with masses of candlelight, or big foliage-heavy statement backdrops and arches, for that enchanted forest look.”

LES S I S M O RE “We are seeing a shift towards carefully curated minimalism and thought-through designs,” says Amelie Marron, head of weddings at Lavender Green Flowers. As opposed to the rustic aesthetic, when it comes to floral arrangements this means focusing on one key bloom, such as “red anemones, reflexed roses or plum hellebores” in rich hues, she adds. “Some of our absolute favourite winter tablescapes have only had minimal florals, with masses of candlelight for a warm, classic look that suits hotels, barns and unique venues alike,” Marron says. A major catwalk fashion trend in 2023, bows are popular in the world of weddings too and will likely be trending through 2024, she adds: “Velvet bows on each place setting, or a new favourite: satin ribbon tied on to candelabras.”

LIFEST YLE | WEDDINGS

MIN I D RES S ES Inspired by celebrities who don multiple wedding dresses (often gifted by designers who want the publicity, of course), some brides are choosing to go short with their dress – which insider predict we’ll see more of in 2024. “We have seen an increasing interest in bespoke mini dresses, for brides opting for a second look for dancing or the day before the wedding,” says Phillipa Lepley, creative director and founder of Phillipa Lepley. “Often they are strapless, lightly-corseted bodices with flouncy, short, fun tutu skirts or slinky, figure-hugging silhouettes, which is a huge contrast to ball gown-style wedding gowns.” These custom creations may have a sprinkling of sparkle or an element of personalisation, Lepley says: “For example, memorable personal events or dates, deceased loved ones’ names or love notes embroidered in the dress, either secretly or accessibly to show it off.”

WED D IN G LU N C H ES The reception meal might be formally called the wedding breakfast (harking back to a time when ceremonies were held in the morning), but some couples are choosing to tie the knot earlier and have a refined midday feast instead of the classic dinner and a disco.

So what are his tips for slow cooking success? “One of the things that I always say is that I would typically load it the night before and just put the pot in the fridge, or put it in a freezer bag, and then just load the slow cooker in the morning so you don’t have to get up in the morning start chopping onions – it can all be done the night before,” he says. If you’re cooking meat, cut the chunks roughly the same size, so you get a consistent cook. Less may be more when it comes to spice, because cooking low and slow means flavours infuse more intensely than other cooking methods. And always add less liquid or stock than you think you need, ‘It’s difficult to take away extra or to thicken larger quantities of liquid,’ he notes in the book. A B OV E
