DIY POT PLANTS & WHAT TO PLANT

HOUSE PROUD EXPLORES CITY HALL

Number 1. Pets are personal trainers. Even now my chocolate Labrador wakes me up at 6am for our "morning jog". This has since become an afternoon stroll. If you are lacking motivation to do your cardio workout, simply give your dog your favourite shoes. Chasing him around the house is always gives me a great cardio workout and he won't let me give up easily. Number 2. Salads! Like many people, I find salads boring and struggle to find a healthy lunch option for work. My solution is a lunchbox salad, with a twist. The twist is to pack your salad in a mason jar. You can make a weeks worth all at once and by putting the liquids at the bottom and greens at the top you avoid the dreaded 'soggy salad'. Number 3. Enter our giveaways! If you're looking to keep that fitness resolution going, then take advantage of the great Healthworks 8 week program giveaway on offer. We also have Face of Australia make-up gift bags and Pavermaker moulds to DIY your garden. Entering is as simple as emailing your details.

How to separate a shared bedroom for peace and tranquility!

Use Vertical Space

When it just isn't possible to give each child their own room, a little creativity can go a long way. Here are some affordable ways to transform a single bedroom into two and give your home some peace and tranqulity.

Physically Divide the Room There are many ways to physically divide a room. A half wall is a great solution if you're willing to spend the time and money to build it. For a less permanent solution, use a curtain or hanging beads suspended from the ceiling to create a 'wall.' Or use privacy screens or hinged room divider panels to create false walls.

Make Creative Use of the Furniture

Unless your children's bedroom is spacious, you may have a challenge finding space for all of their belongings. Add bookcases, install shelving units, and use the walls. Hanging storage organizers can be used to store small toys or other items.

Colour, colour, colour..... Painting the walls is a quick and easy way to separate a room. You can create two sides for each child using their colour of choice then decorate based on that child's interests. You might have pastel pink with Disney princesses on one side and purple with jungle animals on the other side.

Using taller furniture or wall space can be especially helpful when there is a significant age difference between children. You can store items for your 10 year old out of reach of a 4-yearold sibling. Not only will that make the room safer for the younger sibling, but it can help prevent the inevitable conflict that happens when a younger sibling accidentally breaks your older child's favorite possession.

Bookshelves or dressers can be placed across the room to create a virtual division between each child's personal space.

Ikea K ALL $174.9 AX 2

Ikea HELTOKIG curtains $24.99

Ikea KALLAX desk combo $193

Loft beds are the ideal solution for small bedrooms. It allows both children their own personal space to sleep, study and decorate to their liking. As an added bonus most have inbuilt storage. February/March issue 2015 Š houseproudmagazine.com

Make Moving House a Breeze

WHAT YOU NEED: sturdy boxes newspaper packing tape markers

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

bubble wrap scissors

1. Connect & Disconnect

3. Plan ahead for Kids & Pets

4. Make sure you're insured

No matter how much you love your new home, you won't love it quite so much if it's lacking water, gas or electricity! The first thing you should do is notify your suppliers that you are moving to ensure you're connected before you move, and that you're disconnected from your current home. Moving could also be a good time to do some research and find a new provider.

When moving with small children and/ or pets, it's best not to have them underfoot while you're lugging heavy boxes. Ask friends or grandparents to watch them for the day - it will make things much easier for all of you. Don't forget to update your pet's microchip details before you move too.

Move your insurance policy to cover your new address. The first thing to do is make sure your policy covers your move. Even with experienced movers, some damage can occur. Check that your new home is covered for when you move in, and your current home still covered until you leave. It's better to be safe than sorry, after all.

2. Change your address & redirect mail Make sure to do this as early as possible, as you'll no doubt be surprised at the amount of people who need to know your new address. Think schools, doctors, the bank, insurance companies, - the list goes on. Redirecting your mail may seem like common sense, but there's always a few bills and personal letters that wing their way to your old address, never to be seen again. Consider a six-month redirect service via the Post Office to get anything you've missed. PAGE 08

5. Back up your data Before you move back up all of your music, photos, documents and data on an external hardrive. This will protect you in case something happens.

HouseProud [feature]

OUR TOP TIPS

MAKE A LIST CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER! Use this as an opportunity to shed all those extra possessions that you just don't need. You can donate them or have a garage sale a few weeks before the big move. DOUBLE CHECK Before leaving the old house check multiple times that everything is gone. START EARLY It will always take longer than you think.

Things to remember when using a removalist: * Ask about any additional charges - such as whether there is a call-out rate and how will it be charged. For example, if it will cost more if the move takes longer than expected or if access to the property is difficult. * If you are paying an hourly rate, ask whether this covers the time when the van leaves and returns to the depot. * Check what insurance the removalist offers and what it covers. * Check your goods before and after they are moved. * Always read over the terms and conditions carefully.

PACK AN ESSENTIALS BOX It should be the last box you pack and the first you unpack. When you finish moving and your sitting amongst your castle of boxes and newspaper, your not going to know where anything is. Have a final box that you take in your own car with the last trip. Inside you should have: toilet paper, pens, paper, chargers, power board, small tool kit, kitchen essentials, snacks or non perishable foods, change of clothes, soap, bathroom essentials, towels. HIRE A VAN, TRUCK OR TRAILER Don't try and move your house in your four door sedan - it just won't work. REMOVALISTS DIY moving not your cup of tea? Removalists offer a range of services including packing, unpacking, storage and of course moving.

TOP THINGS damaged WHEN MOVING G L A S S WA R E - To prevent glassware breakage wrap each item separately and ensure no glass is exposed. - Pack all your glassware in smaller boxes. - Label the boxes clearly as FRAGILE or GLASSWARE. tip: ware boxes gla You can buy ss keep your with dividers to te & safe ra breakables sepa

ART Canvases don't look nearly as good with a hole in them. Make sure to wrap them carefully and leave them to be moved last so other boxes and furniture are not stacked on top of them.

P L A N TS We always want to take the plants we have been growing and nurturing but getting them to your new house can be tricky.

Our Top Tip: Stop watering them

a few days before your move so they are lighter.

FURNITURE Bulky, oddly shaped, valuable and full of pointy bits; furniture is often a top victim when moving. If you can't get enough help to move heavy furniture - invest in removalists. They know the best way to navigate doorways, balconies and protect your nice belongings from damage.

BAKED Ingredients:

lemon meringue pie

Lemon filling:

1 1/2 cups plain flour

5 eggs, lightly beaten

1/2 cup icing sugar

1/2 cup caster sugar

125 grams unsalted butter

1 cup thickened cream

2 egg yolks

2 tsp grated lemon rind

1 tbsp iced water

1/2 cup lemon juice

Meringue: 4 egg whites 1 cup of caster sugar

Directions: 1. Process flour, icing sugar and butter until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add yolks and water. Process until dough just comes together. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until just smooth. Shape into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 200 C or180 C fan-forced. Grease a 4cm-deep, 23.5cm (base) round, loose-based fluted flan tin. Roll out pastry between 2 sheets of baking paper until 3mm thick. Line base and side of prepared pan with pastry. Trim edge. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. 3. Place prepared tin on a baking tray. Line pastry case with baking paper. Fill with ceramic pie weights or uncooked rice. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove weights or rice and baking paper. Bake for 10 minutes or until light golden. Cool pastry case. Reduce oven temperature to 180 C/160 C fan-forced. 4. Make lemon filling by whisking eggs, sugar, cream, lemon rind and lemon juice in a bowl. Stand for 5 minutes. Pour mixture into pastry case. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until filling is just set. Cool for 15 minutes. 5. Make meringue using an electric mixer - beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating constantly until sugar dissolves and mixture is thick and glossy. Spoon meringue over filling. Bake for 5 minutes or until meringue is golden. DIY Pallet gardening table

HouseProud [garden]

How to build a folding

1. Start by adding the C screws to the pallet that would sit against the house. (a) Add 1 C screw on each side to the top of the pallet about 5-7cm in from the end. (b) Add 1 C screws on each side to the face of the pallet about 15cm from the top & in the center of the end planks. Once complete, set pallet aside. On the second pallet, add 1 C screw on each side to the face of the pallet (which will be your work surface) about 30 cm from the edge & in the center of the end planks. 2. Once the 6 C shaped screws are in place, then it's time to connect the 2 pallets. Using heavy-duty strap hinges, place 2 at the end planks and the other 2 somewhat evenly spaced in the center. 3. Link the chain onto the C screws, so it fits just right for the bench to be open at 90 degrees. *By this point the garden table is very heavy and may need 2-3 people to move it. 4. It's time to put it in place on the vertical surface. The work bench should be around 90cm high (typical height of a kitchen countertop). Hold it in place and determined where the C screws in the house should be placed. Using 2 C shaped screws, install them into a stud on the side of the house.

CHECKLIST:

5. Once the C hooks are in place, add about 15cm of chain to each side so they hook from the C shaped screws on the house to the C shaped screws on the top of the pallet. 6. Your done. The final detail are all up to you, add some hooks to hang tools etc. When it's not in use, simply push up the horizontal pallet and hook it into place.

Exploring Brisbane’s

CITY HALL

Emma Leckie Features Editor

I was kindly invited to take a tour around the newly renovated Brisbane City Hall. Needless to say, I was very excited to learn a few secrets and history of one of Brisbane's most iconic buildings, including stories of City Halls very own ghost! Beginning in the foyer of City Hall, we were greeted by our tour guide and then we were off to explore the many wonders of the building affectionately known as "the People's Place". The small numbers permitted on the tour allow for a more personal experience, and for you to really get involved in the tour and for all your questions to be answered. Brisbane City Hall has just undergone an impressive threeyear, $215 million dollar restoration due to damage to the original foundations. On the tour, you even have the opportunity to see the last of the original supporting columns. The tour guide explains it was the original poor foundations of the building that lead to its demise and the need for urgent and extensive renovations to bring it back to its former glory. As part of the renovations upgrades, a commercial kitchen has been installed. This has benefited enormously the various functions and events held in City Hall throughout the year. Another feature of City Hall that can only be accessed on the tour is the heritage listed 'signature wall' in the basement. The historical treasure contains various names, signatures and dates from soldiers of different nationalities that were stations in Brisbane in World War II. You may be surprised at the original use of this wall! Next stop on the tour is the impressive Auditorium, a remarkable and stunning space that houses the Willis & Sons Pipe Organ, which reaches a staggering 13 metres in height! This treasure of musical history is one of only two left in the world, with its sister residing in Westminster Abbey, England. It took experts over one month to dismantle and catalogue the Organ so it could be stored during the renovations. PAGE 16

houseproudmagazine.com February/March issue 2015 Š

HouseProud [feature]

If you think this is an arduous task, it took a further year and a half to tune once reassembled! An addition to the auditorium that was not an original feature in the 1920's is the amazing, 8500 L.E.D. lights displaying a light show over the domed ceiling. Our tour guide also revealed some of the interesting past events that have been held in the auditorium. These include the Miss Australia Pageant of 1968, concerts by The Beatles as well as visits by Queen Elizabeth II, Diana Princess of Wales and many more! Now to the ghost I promised - the story goes that during original construction of the foundations back in the 1920's, a construction worker fell down one of the deep holes dug for the support columns and was tragically killed. It is the ghost of this unfortunate worker that some say can be heard wandering the corridors and foyer of City Hall! If you are ever around City Hall on a Tuesday there is a ghost free concert held from 11.30am to 2.00pm.

I would thoroughly recommend ending the tour with a visit to the famous Shingle Inn for some delicious coffee and sweets. Originally opened in 1936 on Edward Street, The Shingle Inn is the oldest cafe in Brisbane. Well known for its excellence in cakes, outstanding service and unique atmosphere. The Shingle Inn is open 7 days a week, 9am till 4pm.

Meeting the

LORD MAYOR!

During our visit we were also invited to meet the Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, very friendly and very tall. He took the time to explain the inner workings of the City Council and even invited us to sit in on a debate in Chambers.

Meet Your Local Council

Member...

House Proud recently attended a charity event at a local school where we met Brisbane Council Member Kim Marx. After chatting with Kim, we thought it would interesting to discover what’s involved in being a local Councillor. Kim was kind enough to let me tag along for a day to get a glimpse into what makes up a typical working day. Kim Marx was elected as Local Council member for Karawatha in 2012. Prior to this she worked as a Personal Assistant to the Director of Children’s Emergency at the Mater Children’s Hospital, so she is certainly no stranger to hard work. The first thing I discovered was that 9-5 does not exist. Her daily schedule can involve anything from meetings in office during the day to charity events and award ceremonies often late at night. In between all of this, Kim likes to make time to visit various schools, retirement and nursing homes in her area.

Kim is never happier than when she can get out and about talking to local residents. It is obvious to anyone that spends time with Kim that she is a dynamo of energy and thrives under pressure.

Something that did surprise me was how much work she actually has to get through in a typical day. In addition to her time spent with local residents helping to solve a whole range of concerns and issues, she also spends many long hours in Council. Kim takes very seriously her promise to residents in her ward that any council issues or concerns will be fully investigated and a resolution sought. It was certainly amazing to discover quite how much time and energy goes in to being a Brisbane City Council member. Kim admits it is a juggling act trying to balance her work and family commitments but also praises her family for their wonderful support and understanding.

Local residents will be excited to learn that plans are afoot to improve the apperance of Compton Rd. Kim has been a driving force behind plans to initiate a much needed face lift. The project is due to be completed by the middle of the year and will involve the replanting of the centre verge of the road. Kim went on to explain the many details and procedures needed to bring a project of this size to fruition. Safety is a big concern for Kim. She explained that due to the roads high speed limit, Police services will be required. A great idea to stay in touch with your community and get involved in what’s up and coming, is to sign up for Councillor Marx’s ENewsletter! PAGE 18

houseproudmagazine.com February/March issue 2015 ©

Kim thoroughly enjoys being able to assist and improve the local community through her work. House Proud would like to wish Kim all the very best for the future and thank her for taking the time out of her busy schedule.

How to Exercise your Human Can't find the motivation to get into shape? Maybe you just need help from your four legged friend instead. Our pets need exercise as much as we do and dogs are usually more than happy to nudge you out of bed for a morning walk.

Dog walkies

Run with your dog

Try some pet yoga

Something as simple as a daily walk can not only help you get fit but also improve your pets health and mood. Dogs are creatures of habit, and they'll help you stick to a training plan. Once they get into the routine of a morning walk, you won't need an alarm clock, that wet nose in your face will work.

Keeping pace with your dog is similar to having your own personal trainer at your side. Dogs have a one-track mind; they'll push the pace and keep a consistent speed the whole time. Plus you're less likely to give up just because you're tired once you see those big puppy dog eyes.

You can also try other activities with certain breeds such as hiking, biking, inline skating, or swimming. A word of caution: If you have a dog that loves chasing birds and you have a dislike of wipeouts--rethink cycling and skating.

Start gently, making sure you both warm up first. For your pooch, this means five minutes of sniff time followed by a five-minute walk. Sustained jogging isn't good for puppies and large breeds due to joint problems so make sure you factor that in.

If you enjoy yoga and own a dog or cat, maybe try incorporating them into your workout. You can integrate your dog or cat into lifts and classic yoga poses, like the triangle. Small dogs and cats act as extra weight, while large dogs can be used as yoga bolsters. Meanwhile, your pet benefits from massage, acupressure and reflexology, and a stronger bond with you.

TIP: Always bring water with you - the longer the runs, the more water your dog will need. Also remember that your dog, just like you, will need a cool down at the end of the run in the form of a five-minute sniff around.

Strolling with your cat Don't think that just because you have a cat, a walk is out of the question. You can go out for short walks together - just as long as your kitty is happy to wear a harness. Make sure to test this at home for a few days before you go outside together. Obviously this isn't for all cats so if they appear distressed don't take them out. PAGE 20

houseproudmagazine.com February/March issue 2015 Š

Stair climbing If your cat needs motivating to get off the armchair, you may like this stairclimbing game that will give you both a cardiovascular workout. Place toys at the top and bottom of the stairs, and follow as your cat moves up and down them. You can even put your cat's dinner at the top if they need a little extra incentive. So when you consider that an energiser doggy can help you get fit, lose weight, and have fun in the process, a chewed-up pair of shoes becomes a worthy sacrifice.

Riddle "Dad, where have you been?" asked Paul. "I have been in the attic son," replied Dad. "And do you know what I saw there? There was a big web with 11 spiders and flies on it." "How many spiders were there?" asked the little boy. "Well, there were a total of 76 legs on the web," answered Dad with a smile. "Now you can find out how many spiders were there by yourself. Can't you?" Can you help the little boy find out how many spiders were on the web in the attic?

USE NAIL POLISH TO COLOUR COORDINATE YOUR KEYS

MOVING TIP! Pack heavy items like books in a suitcase it will make them so much easier to move.

Use a large rubber band to stop excess paint dripping & give you somewhere to rest your brush!

To keep a door from closing use a rubber band over the two handles. This is great if you are moving into a new home and carrying heavy boxes or furniture inside.

PUT CHARCOAL PIECES IN YOUR TOOL BOX It will absorb any moisture and stop your tools from rusting!

TIP

Attach bull dog clips to the edge of your desk, or bed side table - then thread your various power cables through the clip handles and viola! No more loose, runaway chargers.

diy Pringles Containers!

Use a bread clip to hold your place on a roll of tape.

Use an empty /clean pringles container to store your spaghetti pasta! If you’re feeling fancy you can even decorate them. Finally an excuse to buy chips!

Use a straw to d-stem a strawberry

My bathroom basin upstairs drains really slowly. Do I need a plumber?

- Sarah, Eight Mile Plains

Your Questions Answered I want to buy a rental property. What's involved in being my own landlord?

This is a problem I would suggest tackling yourself before spending money on a plumber. Begin by using bleach or preferably a solution of Caustic Soda from the local hardware store tipped down the waste. Wear goggles for eye safety. Leave it to soak for an hour or two. If this doesn't improve the situation then unscrew the U bend under the basin. These can often become blocked with gooey black yucky stuff and cleaning should cure the problem. If this doesn't help then you will need a plumber with a special camera to check your drains. Always ask for a quote first as plumbers can charge anywhere between $150 and $250 to check your drain with a camera and this will not include the cost of fixing any problems they may find.

- Luke G, Sunnybank

I have a friend who is a real estate agent on the Gold Coast. He has offered to sell my house in Underwood. Is this a good idea? - M. Kizwick, Underwood

I will admit to a certain bias being the Principal of my own agency with a large rent roll to manage. Even so my advice is genuine when I say don't do it. Your investment success begins with choosing the right type of property in a popular area. Pay a fair price then appoint a really good property management team to look after it. This way you will sleep at night, delay the onset of grey hairs and stand a very good chance of making money with a great long term investment to look forward too. There is so much more to correctly managing a rental property than just collecting the rent and doing a few repairs. Lack of space stops me from giving more detailed advice but do please feel free to contact me if you would like more specific advice on any of the items I have discussed in this issue.

- Howard

I can see why this could be a tempting offer but I would advise caution. Selling your home is a big decision. There is a lot of your money at stake and you need to have the best possible help and advice. It can be hard to complain to a friend if you are not happy with their service. I have no idea if your friend is a good agent or not but I feel reasonably confident in saying an agent on the Gold Coast is highly unlikely to have a database of buyers looking for properties in Underwood! A good local agent spends all day and everyday selling properties in your area. They know local prices and they will already have a list of interested buyers. My advice is to choose an experienced local agent that you feel comfortable with. Good luck with the sale.
