Key things to update Cabinets - If you can't upgrade your cabinets, a fresh coat of paint and some new handles will make them seem brand new. For best results try using paints formulated for use on melamine. A new bench top or new flooring can instantly change the feel and style of your kitchen.
Paint the walls - it's like a face-lift for your kitchen and probably the most inexpensive and easiest part of your kitchen to update. New appliances are a great way to update your kitchen - it can be as extravagant as a new oven or as simple as a new coffee machine or microwave. Keep it functional - when space is limited you need every available inch to work for you. Use furniture that has multiple functions. Switch up the traditional table and chairs for a small island or bench with bar stools. It provides a space that can be utilized for both cooking and dining while also providing storage space.
Use as much vertical space as possible. Floor to ceiling cupboards are a great option if you have the ability to do so. You can also increase the functionality of your cabinets by installing drawers. Glass-fronted cabinets can help add dimension and give the illusion of more open space.
A small kitchen can be made to feel even smaller if the appliances are oversized. Choose smaller models that will fit the scale of your kitchen. If fridge space is an issue, consider putting an extra fridge or large freezer in the garage space. Counter lighting is a great way to brighten your bench tops. They're also useful if you don't have a lot of natural light into your kitchen. If the floor plan and structure permits, look at adding a skylight or installing a large window to increase light flow through the space.
Use wall space to hang kitchenware
it saves space & looks stylish Storage space in small kitchens is often limited. Try using a peg board to hang your kitchen utensils on. Open shelving is a popular style choice at the moment. You can easily build some custom shelves for all those big kitchen items that just won't squeeze into your cupboards. To make your kitchen feel as large as possible, choose a colour scheme from cool, pale or pastel palettes.

UNDRESSED 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion Ever wondered what Queen Victoria's undergarments looked like? Emma Leckie Features Editor
Recently I was lucky enough to meet with Bernadette McCormack, Senior Creative Producer at the Queensland Museum. As one of my favourite places to go in Southbank, their various exhibitions are always a draw card, and when I heard about their up-and-coming exhibition I was intrigued to say the least! Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion is set to be a show-stopper, a partnership between the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Queensland Museum is bringing this wonderful exhibition to Brisbane. Highlights include historical and prominent fashionable garments that range from the 16th Century up to the present day. Ever wondered what Queen Victoria's undergarments looked like? Well you have the opportunity to be up close to observe the exquisite detail of not just Queen Victoria's monogramed drawers, but also some extraordinary pieces of fashion history that have helped shaped the way we dress today.
Other garments that feature in the exhibition reveal the remarkable calibre of the collection, with names including Versace, Jean Paul Gautier and Vivienne Westwood revealing that there really is something for everyone at this exhibition. In discussion with Bernadette, I was able to gain intimate knowledge on the exhibition and how it reflects society and its changing sense of dress and culture throughout history. The garments on show at the Queensland Museum represent the changing ideals of body image that society has gone through, right from the Victorian era of the perfect body shape being shaped by our undergarments, to the present day notion of obtaining the "perfect body" through diet and exercise (though good genes do help - thanks mum!). It is interesting to see just how our notions of dress and the "perfect body" (who really knows what that is anyway?!) have changed throughout history. This exhibition will open your mind to really understand just how underwear has impacted and reflected our sense of dress, beauty and gender. This exhibition also gives us the opportunity to glimpse life in another time, and the world events that influenced the ideals of the time which then of course impacted the way we dress. For example, World War l and ll were both world-changing events that changed fashion out of necessity. The changing views of women and the respective changes in women's dress are also represented through the various garments on show at the exhibition. Out of all the amazing exhibitions that Bernadette had seen at the Queensland Museum, she said that todate her favourite had been the Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul. This was her favourite because it highlighted the culture of that part of the world.

DATE NIGHT!
HouseProud [feature]
Ladies and Gentlemen! How about taking your special someone out for a night out? This exhibition would be the perfect date night opportunity, with two great events that will be accompanying the exhibition:
UNDRESSED - AFTER DARK 5th December 2014 - A one-off event that features a live Art/ Fashion installation project by QUT Fashion Industry Professionals, showcase of local lingerie designers, a live DJ and some delicious cocktails!
UNDRESSED - BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR 21st and 28th November 2014 – An amazing opportunity for a first-ever behind the scenes guided tour of the Queensland Museum's textile collection, focusing on costume, underwear and Queensland fashion. Visitors that attend the Behind the Scenes Tour will receive free entry into the exhibition on the same day with the presentation of their tour ticket. For more information on these events and the exhibition visit the Queensland Museum Website:
Also for more information on the collection visit the Victoria and Albert Museum:
http://www.qm.qld.gov.au/
http://www.vam.ac.uk/
The story behind this exhibition is nothing short of extraordinary, and the treasures that feature in the exhibit are simply remarkable. These precious treasures were hidden to protect the culture from where they came, and seeing them in the exhibition, allow us the opportunity of a glimpse into a different world. Speaking to Bernadette, I gained an insight into the planning and organising that is needed to execute an exhibition of this scale and calibre. The exhibition plan for the Queensland Museum is something like a five to seven year cycle. Included in the planning stage are negotiations between the museum and the place of origin of the items. The exhibitions at the Queensland Museum are built inhouse, with a skilled team of forty to fifty people making it all happen from beginning to end.
WHEN: 12th November 2014 - 1st February 2015 WHERE: The Queensland Museum, Southbank TICKETS: Available for Pre-Purchase
Once the exhibition has finished, it would take approximately another twelve or so months to dismantle and evaluate the exhibition. Just imagine all the multi-tasking that goes on here as there are always multiple exhibitions that are running and in planning at any one time! I was very interested to hear from Bernadette that some of the Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear and Fashion exhibition showcases pieces that are from the Queensland Museum's own collection. She stated that this not only was the opportunity to showcase the Museum's extensive collection, but also gave the opportunity to put Queensland on the map internationally. This is important from a cultural aspect as we are able to show not just the world, but also the next local generation, a little bit of history from our part of the world. I can’t decide whether or not to fit solar power to my house. I think it’s a great idea but will it save me money? - Julia, Sunnybank Hills Any home with solar is immediately more valuable than the house next door that is without solar on the roof, imagine selling or buying a home with free power included in the purchase! A 5 kW system will produce up to 8500 kW per year, put this in to monetary value, depending on your tariff can be up to $2500 every year, what value! Look at it this way, every 10 years is $25,000 off the price of your purchase. This is also a great selling advantage to be able to offer this to a potential purchaser of your property.

Your Questions Answered I am looking to upgrade my fencing. What type of fencing should I get and as someone who works in realestate can you tell me if it will increase my properties value? - Lisa , Stretton
Howard, I was wondering if you could recommend a quick way to clean my BBQ? It’s pretty bad and hasn’t been cleaned since last spring. Help!
Fencing is a very important part of the home but is often overlooked until you either want to sell the home or rent it. I guarantee potential buyers or tenants will instantly pick up on bad fencing around your property. Whether it’s to keep children and pets in or unwanted people and animals out, fencing is important. It isn’t cheap to buy even if you are able to install it yourself. The two most popular forms of fencing are classic timber or steel colorbond. Personal preference and cost are the main reason to choose one or the other. Both will last a long time if looked after although generally a timber fence will require more work if it is stand up to weather and termites. Colorbond, although slightly more expensive, is quick to install and virtually maintenance free for its entire life. Although timber fencing does require more work it can last a surprisingly long time if correctly maintained.
Hi Greg. I just use readily available household ammonia but do wear splash proof goggles and rubber gloves before starting. Pour one cup of undiluted ammonia into a heavy duty garbage or garden waste bag. Carefully place the BBQ grates to be cleaned inside without tearing the bag and seal the bag tightly. It is the fumes from the ammonia that will clean the muck off your grates so best to do this outdoors. Place the bag in the sun and leave it to the following day.
- Greg, Calamvale
Open with care wearing goggles and gloves and remember ammonia is toxic to humans, animals, grass and plants! Watch the fumes, it will be strong. Carefully rinse clean. Scrub any stubborn grime with a stiff brush. Dispose of the waste ammonia down a sink or toilet, not the storm water drain and enjoy your next nice clean BBQ. - Howard
