Impress your guests

for the holidays

Do you have guests coming in for the holidays and one incredibly messy, unkept guest bedroom for them to sleep in? Guest bedrooms tend to be the less decorated rooms in a house because they're the least lived in. But by doing something as simple as covering the walls or switching the bedspread, you can change the whole atmosphere and create a room any family member or friend would be happy to stay in. Here are a few things you may have forgotten.

Throw pillows & blankets for a comfortable, home like feel!

A POWER BOARD IS ESSENTIAL Spare rooms tend to have less wall outlets.

A BEDSIDE TABLE & LIGHT - you can go for a soft lamp shade or a desk style light for those who like to read.

ADD HOLIDAY FLAIR Your guests are most likely visiting for Christmas or New Year so decorate and get into the spirit.

Rubbish Bin Coat Hangers

ADD SOME ENTERTAINMENT Leave a few books or magazines for your guests to peruse.

AIM FOR A COMFORTABLE SLEEP Give your guests all they will need to help them get a good nights sleep. If not, then you're the one who will have to listen to them complain. New pillows & some fresh sheets should do it.

Scented candles A spare key - in case they want to come & go.

A fan is important during our summer heat.

bathroom must-haves Spare toothpaste & toothbrush

TOWELS & HANGING SPACE Towel ladders are great if you have limited space or rent and can't install hooks.

Make your bathrooms easily navigatable. If your guests are sharing your bathroom then clean & organise so they do not feel as if they are intruding. If they have their own guest bathroom, provide them with all the essentials that they have probably forgotten. Laundry basket So they don't have to store dirty clothes in their suitcase

New Year’s RESOLUTIONS H O M E

Make a HOME improvement The key to a good New Year's Resolution is making it achievable! Don't plan a massive renovation, instead choose one room or one thing to improve upon in your home and make that your goal. The first step is to make yourself a TO DO LIST of all the things that need to be fixed or replaced in the house. Prioritise urgent home fixes - if you want to repaint your bedroom but your roof leaks, you should probably fix the roof first. Here's House Prouds top home improvement to do list for your home.

• Landscape the garden • Change dated door hardware • Fit new light switch covers throughout the house

• Deep clean all windows • Replace old light shades & fan fittings • Sand back and lacker timber floors • Steam clean the carpets • Repair any holes or damage in walls • For a new look use concrete paint to redo the outdoor area.

• Replace worn window dressings with new ones to give a room a fresh look.

• Replace and redo discoloured grouting

If you can't renovate, TIP:

First off, the area should be completely void of grass, flowers, bushes, roots, or trees. Build your garden bed upside down and on a flat, hard surface.

Materials 8 pieces of pine 120cm x 15.5cm 4 pieces of pine Square with height - 31cm 32 screws or nails Fertiliser or compost Garden soil

1. Set a piece of 120cm pine on its thin edge on the ground. Place a square 31cm tall post at one end. Secure square post with 2 x screws. Repeat at other end of wood. Repeat with second 120cm piece of wood. 2. Join your other two 120cm pieces of wood to these and secure with 2 x screws. Now you have a box. 3. Add another layer of 120cm pieces of wood and use 2 x screws to secure them to the square posts already attached to the bottom square. OPTIONAL: You can line the bottom of the box with black plastic or leave it. If you choose to line your box use a heavy duty staple gun or nails to secure it.

Family Fun Day Checklist SLIP, SLOP, SLAP: Sunscreen, hat, protective clothing, sunglasses. Get there early! This is to ensure a close and shady car park, and a shady resting spot for the family inside the park. In case your children wander off, agree on an easy to find meeting point in advance. Snacks! Bring your own water bottles, snacks and take advantage of the free BBQ’s. Most of all - HAVE FUN!

Now this is what I call a thrill ride! Highly recommended for those who are seeking an adrenaline rush! For those who are a little less adventurous, why not go and watch your friends and family’s faces as they hurtle out of the tunnel.......priceless!

4

This would have to be one of the most popular attractions here at the park, who wouldn’t want to experience all the fun of the beach including the waves! Great fun for the whole family!

The Wave Pool

Check out the ALL NEW Wet’n’Wild Junior Park!! Happy Birthday Wet’n’Wild! The water park celebrates its 30th year and marks the occasion by opening the new Wet ‘n’ Wild Junior park. A kid-friendly zone that will keep the little ones entertained for hours! Perfect for the younger adventure seekers with scaled down versions of some of the most popular larger rides throughout the park. Miniature versions include rides older thrill seekers may recognise like the Tornado and the Aqua Racers. A major draw-card that was very popular on our visit was the multilevel interactive play structure. With lots to do that will keep your kids entertained plus the peace of mind knowing that lifeguards patrol the area. With slides, water fountains and a giant tipping bucket as well as the ever popular wading pool, this area is equipped with everything that the kids could ever dream of in a water park. Parents and grandparents can even join in the fun on selected rides if given permission by their children. December/January issue 2014/2015 © houseproudmagazine.com

TIPS TO KEEP THEM COOL 1

Frozen food & treats

FROZEN F R U I T C U B E S These are super fast and simple treats your pets are sure to enjoy. Use icecube trays for small dogs & cats. For the larger dogs who require a bit more of a challenge try ice-cream containers.

2

Use a plastic pool

Not all pets love water, but it's worth a try to see if yours does! Kid pools are cheap and can be filled and kept in the shade. No place for a pool? Throw down a wet towel in the shade so your pet can rest on to cool off.

YOU CAN ADD

• blueberries • strawberries • watermelon • carrot pieces • banana slices • peanut butter • cooked chicken pieces Fill trays with water, chicken stock mixture or plain yoghurt. Place in freezer until frozen solid.

3

BANANA Peanut Butter ICE CREAM INGREDIENTS

• •

3 ripe bananas 1 tbsp peanut butter

DIRECTIONS Peel banana and freeze for 2 hrs or overnight. Blend bananas in a blender or food processor. Add peanut butter and blend again. Serve to your pooch immediately or place in sealed container in the freezer. PAGE 20

houseproudmagazine.com December/January issue 2014/2015 ©

Keep your pet inside when possible, or provide plenty of shade outside. FACT: pets can get sunburnt.

4 5

Keep your pet hydrated TIP: add ice cubes to their water bowls.

Tie a wet bandanna around your pets neck

6

Time your walks

Even though you might not feel like it, your dog still needs exercise in the heat of the summer. Try to walk or run your pooch in the early morning or late afternoon when it's cooled down a bit and overheating is less of a threat. Swimming is a great form of exercise for dogs. If you can get to a dog friendly beach or pool it will not only tire them out but keep you both cool.

7

Grooming is important

If you have a cat or dog with long hair or a dense undercoat, a trip to the groomer can work wonders!

Surviving the Christmas Spirit Indulged a little too much? Don’t worry, we have you covered. Here are some tried and tested (!!) hangover cures that are sure to get you back to your festive best.

PREVENTION is better than a cure so remember to...

OOPS . . . HA D A LIT T LE TO O M UC H ?

Drink lots of water and............ blah blah blah! (don’t forget to have fun)

SLEEP

If you have to work the following day then just use the age old I’ve got food poisoning” excuse to your boss.

How about the traditional ‘FRY-UP’ BREAKFAST? Load up your plate with eggs, bacon, toast, hashbrowns, sausages baked beans and any other greasy food you enjoy. Not for those with high cholesterol.

BEFORE sleeping. I don’t know why but this works for me!

The traditional A U S S I E cure Vegemite on toast OR ... see hair of the dog!

COLD PIZZA Who knows why but it seems to work!

My personal favourite.... Take some H E A DA C H E TA B L E TS

Known as the PRAIRIE OYSTER this cure is not for the faint of heart. Crack a raw egg in a glass, throw in 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and a dash of Tabasco sauce. Just close your eyes and take it like a shot.........

R E - HY D R AT E Before going to bed drink a big glass of water before passing out OR ...... see hair of the dog!

If all else fails, just start drinking again. The age-old method, “THE HAIR OF THE DOG” is only for the very brave!
