lifestyle HouseProud CHOCOLATE POPCORN CLUSTERS You need: • Any chocolate block, broken into pieces • 1/4 cup popping corn, prepared as per packet directions with no salt Method: 1) Melt the chocolate in a bowl over simmering water. 2) Place the popcorn in a separate bowl. Pour the melted chocolate over the popcorn and combine. 3) Scoop two tablespoons of popcorn mixture into paper cupcake cases. Allow to set in the fridge.

GUESS THE NUMBER OF GUMBALLS GAME PHOTO FRAME KMART $3.50

GLASS JAR KMART $3

Just fill a clear jar with gumballs or whatever treat you want. Try and use non-wrapped lollies and avoid chocolate or anything that melts. Then just get the kids to guess the amount in the jar. The closest guess wins the jar. Be mindful that their parents may not be as excited.

DIY SPRINKLE RIMMED CUPS This is so simple but will impress your kids so much. Just use some basic cupcake icing mixture. Combine icing sugar powder with water to form a sticky paste. Then use that to cover the rim of the glass. Pour your sprinkles onto a plate and then dip each cup in the sprinkles.

MASON JAR CUP KMART $2

MILK BOTTLES FREEDOM FURNITURE $9.95

GET CREATIVE ART EASEL SET KMART $15

Instead of a birthday cake why not make cupcakes and let the kids decorate them. You can ice the cupcakes, then give each child an assortment of toppings to add as they like. These paint palettes are perfect. You can pick them up in the crafts section at most stores for a few dollars.

TOFFEE APPLES with a twist

Salted Caramel Sauce :

Caramel Sauce Method:

2 cups granualted sugar 12 TBSP unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into peices 1 cup thickned cream, at room temperature 1 TBSp sea salt

Oven Baked Churros :

1. Get all your ingredients ready before you start because you have to pay close attention to your sauce. 2. Heat the sugar over medium highheat in a saucepan. When the sugar starts to melt, start whisking. It will continue to melt. When the sugar is melted, stop whisking. You can swirl the pan to move the sugar around. 3. Continue cooking the sugar until it reaches a deep amber colour. Make sure you watch the pan very closely. This is where it is easy to burn it. 4. As soon as the sugar reaches the dark amber color, carefully add the butter. Whisk until butter is melted. If the sugar gets stuck to the whisk, you can switch to a wooden spoon. 5. Remove the pan from the heat and slowly pour in the cream. Whisk until cream is incorporated and caramel is smooth. Whisk in the sea salt.

6. Let the caramel sauce cool for 10 minutes in the pan. Pour the caramel into a large jar and cool to room temperature. This sauce can be stored in the fridge for up to one month. Take your apples and place a wooden stick, skewer, straw or spork into the core of the apple at the stem.

Melted Chocolate Method: Place your chocolate into a glass or metal bowl and set over a pot of simmering water. Stir frequently until melted. You can then coat your apples in either caramel, chocolate or both. Before the sauce sets roll them in toppings of your choice. It can be sprinkles, crushed nuts, cookie crumbs, coconut, icing, smashed lollies - whatever your kids like.

CHURRO BAR Fiesta! Method:

2 TBSP brown sugar

2 large eggs

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup unsalted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup all purpose flour

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 220°c. Cover two baking trays with baking paper; set aside. In a medium saucepan, stir together 1 cup water, brown sugar and salt. Add butter and place over medium-high heat. Heat until butter is melted and mixture starts to boil. Remove from heat and add flour, stirring with a wooden spoon. Mixture will clump and pull away from the sides of the pan. Mix/mash with wooden spoon until combined. 2. In a bowl combine eggs and vanilla. Scramble mixture with a fork and then add to the dough in the saucepan. Stir and mash, breaking up the dough until loosened. Stir well until eggs are incorporated and mixture has the appearance of mashed potatoes. Transfer dough to a piping bag. You could also pipe the dough in a zip-lock bag with the corner snipped, but the churros will be ridge-less (delicious, nonetheless). 3. Pipe dough into long thin lengths on the baking tray. Use a pair of kitchen scissors to cut the end of the dough from the piping tip. Leave about 2-inches of space between the churros.

Photos & recipe courtesy of www.studiodiy.com & www.designindulgences.com

PAGE 18

houseproudmagazine.com June/July issue 2015 ©

4. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until slightly puffed. Turn oven to grill setting and watch carefully as churros toast and turn deep golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Transfer to a wire cooling rack. If you’re baking the churros one pan at a time, be sure to return the oven setting to 220°c before putting in the next pan. Combine sugar and cinnamon and pour onto a long dish. Roll churros in mixture. Serve. Use the caramel sauce and melted chocolate methods from the above recipe as your dipping sauces. Place your churros, sauces and various toppings into small bowls and let the kids

Timber Bed Head

The Nordic look

You will need: Some kind of timber wood lining (You can get this from Bunnings, Masters or any timber supplier. They also come in a variety of shades and wood types.) Bed Frame - this DIY is based of the IKEA MALM bed frame. Queen size $269. Saw to cut wood Measuring tape

Method: 1. Depending on the width and length of the bed head you choose, you will measure the individual pieces to be the same width as the headboard for each row and mark with a pen on the back of the piece of wood. In the DIY above, the headboard alternated between pieces of timber that are the full length and some that are cut into sections. You can alternate the placement of the small piece so every row will be slightly different.

Heavy duty double sided tape OR Wood glue Sand paper (optional) Clear, matte polyurethane

2. Measure and cut your pieces of wood to the size you want and then sand the edges so they are nice and smooth. To attach your timber pieces to the headboard you have two options. You can use wood glue or heavy duty double sided tape. Both are effective, it just comes down to personal preference. 3. Once the entire headboard is covered, spray the polyurethane over the entire surface and let dry. This will keep the colour of the wood from rubbing off onto pillows, and then you are all set! Secrets from a professional stylist

WE ASKED JACKIE FOLAN-MURPHY FROM FEATHER MY NEST PROPERTY STYLING IF SHE COULD SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE ART OF PREPARING YOUR PROPERTY FOR SALE.

You want your home to feel inviting, so open up all those blinds, windows and curtains. "Presentation is a critical part of the selling process as it directly contributes to how buyers feel about your home. Styled properties sell

Globe West $1200

While some people have a natural flair for home styling, others find themselves un-inspired and relying on the advice of a professional to help transform their home. With this is mind, we met with Jackie, a Property Stylist here in Brisbane and asked what her top advice to sellers would be.

If you're looking to sell your property the first thing you need to do is clear the house and begin from scratch. Jackie's top tip is "keep it simple". Key pieces of furniture, rugs and lighting can stay but all knick-knacks and clutter should go.

30-50% faster and 7-17% higher price, than non- styled properties in a similar market" said Jackie. Jackie has styled over 60 properties in the last two years and says that her main styling inspiration comes from magazines and Pinterest. "If I want a new idea for styling a dining table, for example, I will hop onto Pinterest. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of images that I can get inspiration from, it really is a one stop shop".

Real Estate surveys show that sales agents believe styling is most useful when a property is empty or cluttered but less useful for in-expensive homes.

Top 5 property styling tips: 1. DE-CLUTTER Create more space! It's really important to clean your cupboards, draws, tables and bench tops. You also need to remove all family photographs, posters, sporting memorabilia and religious icons. This allows the buyer to focus on the space, not the stuff and picture themselves living there. 2. FIX IT Make sure everything is in good working order. Fix those dripping taps, peeling paint, ripped fly screens and blown light bulbs. 83% of buyers will pay more for a property if it requires little to no work.

5. PRESENTATION Presentation is the key to a successful sales result. You want to create a space that feels warm and inviting. Your buyers need to feel won over by your property and become head over heels in love with the idea of living there.

4. STREET APPEAL It's your 24/7 billboard! Many potential buyers will drive by your home before even deciding if they want to see inside, so make sure it looks its best.

3. CLEAN IT This is so important. Your house needs to be spotless, immaculate, spick and span and sparkling inside and out. Ensure your carpets are fresh, your oven shines, the bathroom glistens and your windows spotless.

PET PROOF YOUR HOME

with style

Pet proofing your home doesn't mean giving up on the home style you love. We have compiled for you a few tried and tested tips on how to style your home around your pet... with style. The first step is to embrace the need to keep your house clean. Most dogs will chew anything you leave on the ground and while this is frustrating, it also forces you to keep the house de-cluttered. Use decorative storage baskets and boxes to hide everything you don't want destroyed. Another tip is to colour match. If you have a pet with white fur - just accept you can't have dark coloured home furnishings.

RUGS & ROPE

UPHOLSTERY

Small patterns and dark colours will hide stains and fur. Try and find outdoor rugs that you like. They will be a lot more stain resistant and durable compared to indoor rugs. Don't get fluffy high pile rugs! While they may be soft and cosy they will tempt your pets to claw and pull at them. Low pile, flatter weave or wool rugs are your best options.

If you're like many people and can't resist letting your pet up on the couch for a cuddle then here is some advice for upholstery. LEATHER or PLEATHER - It is highly resistant to pet hair and stains BUT be warned it does scratch easily. VELVET - This is the perfect fabric to use in the war against cat scratching. The non-looped thread structure makes it less likely for cats to pull at. Win for the humans! Provide an alternative and give your pet their own comfy bed in the living and bedroom. Alternatively you can simply cover your couches with a few decorative throw blankets. They can be replaced easily and washed regularly.

Rope is your friend! If you have a cat and they insist on scratching, get them a scratching post as an alternative to your nice couch. You can either buy one or DIY it yourself. All you need is an object like a piece of wood or even an old tire or traffic cone. Hot glue the rope all around the object and boom, instant pet scratching post. Your Questions Answered

I have an electric screw driver and drill but the rechargeable battery is getting really bad. I don’t use it very often but a replacement battery will cost nearly as much as the drill. I have heard that batteries can sometimes be rescued, how is this done?

Hi Howard, this may be a silly question but I am thinking about getting a robot vacuum cleaner. I have a dog that shed's enough hair to build a new dog every week. Would a robot cleaner make a difference and would it pick up dog hairs?

Sharon, Upper Mt Gravatt

Rebecca, Kuraby

I am guessing the battery will be a NiCad and the fact that you use the drill only occasionally is the reason the battery is losing its ability to hold a charge. Eventually the battery will die completely and will need replacing. These batteries have to be used frequently to stay healthy.

I have to admit I love them. I bought an iRobot vacuum cleaner two years ago. I have just recently bought the latest iRobot Roomba 880 model for the office. Although not as powerful as a regular vacuum cleaner, I programme mine to operate every night so constant cleaning does the job. Most of the top brands are designed to cope with pet hairs with no problems. I would caution against buying the cheapie copies. The good ones are quite expensive but this is because they work. You do have to remember to empty the dust container every two or three days, but its easy and simple. What I did find very useful was to do some online homework. So many people have written really helpful reviews on their experiences with different makes. It will just depend on what you are looking for and how much you wish to spend, but I really do think it's a case of you get what you pay for when buying a robot vacuum cleaner. Check out Ebay for some great deals. - Howard

There may be hope for you yet if the battery isn't completely goosed. The method I have successfully used quite a few times is to first fully charge the battery. Then use sticky tape or similar to hold the trigger so that the drill stays switched on. This saves standing there for 20 minutes holding the trigger with your finger! Let the drill completely drain the battery. Recharge the battery and then completely drain it again. Repeat this process maybe four or five times. With luck this will restore your battery to its former glory. Happy DIY! - Howard

I own a rental property and the outgoing tenants have left a number of smallish holes in the plasterboard walls. What is the cheapest and easiest way to repair damage like this? Mark, Annerley I do have a simple and cheap solution for you. For small holes in plasterboard I take leftover plasterboard and cut a rectangular piece that is twice the length of the width of the hole and just wide enough to fit through the hole. Then screw in a normal wood screw one third in from one end. Holding the screw this allows you to push the repair piece into the hole one way and then slide the opposite end with the screw into place inside the hole. Once you know it fits, remove it, put a generous dab of normal wall filler on either end and position it back into the hole. Use the screw to gently pull the repair piece firmly into place. To speed up the repair substitute the filler with Builders Bog. This will dry in minutes and provide a very strong bond, otherwise cut a slot in square of stiff cardboard larger than the hole and put the card behind the screw using the slot. This will hold the new piece of plaster board in place until the filler or Bog sets. Then simply remove the screw and gently fill the hole with filler and sand to finish in the normal way. A hair drier used gently will speed up the drying process. - Howard
