FOREWORD
Dear sports friends
U
nited European sports family has succeeded! Europe, living a full sports and Olympic life for many decades, can – thanks to gradual building up of this chance - enjoy since this, historical 2015 its new fruit - the European games. Sports that unites almost everything without exception and creates new values (economic, cultural and social), gets through these continental games a new opportunity and new incentive for its further development. Believing that idea and by trying to help Europe strengthen – through the organization of the first continental games on its very soil - the efforts to make sports a component of creative, modern and highly successful Europe, today we truly happy to succeed in our long-term efforts. From its very beginning, Croatian sports is involved in the promotion of the European Games through encouraging the cooperation among all the member states of the European Sports Association, as well as through mobilizing the national TV house Sportska televizija (Sports television) whose owner and founder is the Croatian Olympic Committee. We wish to congratulate the host of the Games, the city of Baku, which has demonstrated not only a huge potential in the organization, but also an exceptional responsibility and strong hosting motive, for which it is the European Olympic family is very grateful. I wish all the athletes, members of the professional staff, media, volunteers and guests of the first European Games in Baku the best results and to gain the experience that will strengthen the new sports, but also the social characteristic of Europe.

President of the Croatian Olympic Committee and member of the EOC Executive Committee Zlatko MateĹĄa, PhD
FOREWORD
Dear participants of the European Games,
T
he idea of the European Games exists already for a few decades, but, until recently, no one has had enough courage and patience to deal with the organization of the Games because its organization, of course, involves solving a whole range of different types and levels of problems. Six years ago, European Committees, with consent and support of the International Olympic Committee, started working on the realization of the idea of European Games. Therefore, dear readers and participants of the Games, you will have the honor to be the first participants at the European games organized by the city of Baku in Azerbaijan. The host city has made a miracle in each and every way. Sports facilities at the highest level as well as accommodation of the participants of the Games. There is no doubt that Baku will set high standards that future Games’ organizers will have difficulties to achieve. As always, the performance of our athletes is intertwined with optimism, even though the participants in certain sports will not be the best Croatian teams or individuals. However, we expect to win several medals. How many? It is difficult to predict, but what I do know for sure is that they will present the colors of their country in the best possible way. They will be, as always, the best ambassadors and promoters of the Republic of Croatia. I wish all the participants of the Games a pleasant stay in Baku and happy return from the first European Games.

reat names of Croatian sports, including 878 athletes-participants at the Olympics, gave a huge contribution to the development and reputation of Croatian sports. During the critical moments of international recognition of Croatia in 1992, the ambassadorial role of Croatian athlete represented a priceless and valuable promotion for the acquisition of Croatian independence. At that time, hardly anyone could believe that Croatian athletes would very quickly win Olympic medals in basic sports such as athletics, gymnastics, and swimming and that they would become the superpower in skiing without a ski center. They are not just Olympians, gold, silver or bronze medalists or nonmedalists, they are our and world value, the driving force, inspiration and social capital.
CROATIAN ATHLETES TODAY AND THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY
Croatian medalists In the period from 1992 to 2014, Croatian athletes have won 34 medals at the Olympics - 23 at the Summer Olympics and 11 at the Winter Olympics. Among them, there are 10 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze medals. Of 10 gold medals, there are seven individual and three team medals. The first Croatian gold medal was won in the individual competition, being - at the same time - the first medal in the history of Croatian skiing. This medal was hanging around the neck of the most successful Croatian Olympian of all time, Janica Kostelić, who has won a total of six Olympic medals - four (three gold and one silver) at the Winter Olympics in Lake City in 2002 as well as gold and silver in Turin in 2006. Gold of the athlete Sandra Perković, current Olympic champion from London 2012, and World and European Champion in discus throw, is the first and so far the only Olympic gold in Croatian athletics. Weightlifter Nikolay Pešalov has won gold in Sydney in 2000, while Giovanni Cernogoraz is the last winner of Olympic gold for Croatia (London 2012 in shooting, discipline trap). In team competition, the first Olympic gold medal was the one won by the Croatian national handball team in Atlanta in 1996. Thanks to them, the Croatian national anthem was played for the first time at the Olympics. The team included Patrik Ćavar, Valner Franković, Slavko Goluža (Olympian with two gold medals and long-time head coach of the Croatian Patrik Ćavar
national handball team), Bruno Gudelj, Vladimir Jelčić, Božidar Jović, Nenad Kljaić, Venio Losert, Valter Matošević (double gold medalist)¸ Zoran Mikulić, Alvaro Načinović, Goran Perkovac, Iztok Puc, Zlatko Saračević, Irfan Smajlagić and Vladimir Šujster. The gold medal was also won by the generation of handball players at the Olympics in Athens in 2004. The team included: Ivano Balić (winner of gold and bronze medals, three times declared the IHF World Player of the Year), Davor Dominiković, Mirza Džomba, Slavko Goluža, Nikša Kaleb, Blaženko Lacković, Venio Losert, Valter Matošević, Petar Metličić, Vlado Šola, Denis Špoljarić, Goran Šprem, Igor Vori, Drago Vuković and Vedran Zrnić. Besides these two handball gold medals, the brightest Olympic medal was won by the generation of water polo players from the Olympics in London in 2012 - Josip Pavić, Damir Burić, Miho Bošković, Nikša Dobud, Maro Joković, Petar Muslim, Ivan Buljubašić, Andro Bušlje, Sandro Sukno, Samir Barač, Igor Hinić, Paulo Obradović and Frano Vićan. From 13 silver Olympic medals (of which two in team competition - water polo and basketball), four were won by one of the best Croatian athletes of all time and the world's most comprehensive skier Ivica Kostelić. At the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006, Ivica has won – in men’s competition - the first-ever Croatian winter sports medal. Afterwards he has won the second and third silver medal in Vancouver in 2010, and the last, fourth, in Sochi in 2014. His sister Janica Kostelić is the winner of two silver medals - the first

one in Salt Lake City in 2002 and the second one in Turin in 2006. The winners of one silver medal are the athletes Blanka Vlašić (Beijing Olympics 2008), double World Champion in high jump, gymnast Filip Ude (Beijing Olympics 2008), the first Croatian gymnast with Olympic medal and the swimmer Duje Draganja (Athens 2004), multiple World Champion and holder of record in free style. The rowers have also won two Olympic silvers. The “older” one is from Athens 2004 (brothers Siniša and Nikša Skelin), won by the most successful Croatian coxless pairs who have also won a bronze medal as members of the coxed eight in Sydney in 2000. While the last silver medal was won by the current World Champions, members of the quadruple sculls, David Šain, Martin Sinković, Damir Martian and Valent Sinković (London 2012). In team competition, holders of silver Olympic medals are the members of the historical "Croatian Dream Team" from Barcelona in 1992, all of them basketball players Vladan Alanović, Franjo Arapović, Danko Cvjetičanin (all three of them Olympians with two silver medals), Alan Gregov, Arijan Komazec, Toni Kukoč (two Olympic silver medals, also the most successful Croatian basketball player who ever played in the professional NBA league), Aramis Naglić, Velimir Perasović, Dražen Petrović (triple holder of Olympic medals, two silver and one bronze; the greatest basketball player Europe has ever had, also NBA league player Dražen Petrović
who was tragically killed in a car accident in 1993, with permanent memorial monument erected in the park of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne), Dino Rađa (winner of two Olympic silver medals and numerous European titles, NBA league player), Žan Tabak (NBA league) and winner of two Olympic silver, along with European titles, Stojko Vranković. Silver was also won by the water polo players at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 - Maro Balić, Perica Bukić (with a total of three medals, two gold and one silver), Damir Glavan, Igor Hinić with gold and silver, Vjekoslav Kobešćak, Joško Kreković, Ognjen Kržić, Dubravko Šimenc (one of the world's best water polo players of all time, winner of gold and silver medal), Siniša Skolneković, Ratko Štritof, Tino Vegar, Renato Vrbičić and Zdeslav Vrdoljak. Among 11 bronze medals (the only team medal is the one won by the handball team), the bronze medal won by the tennis players Goran Ivanišević in Barcelona in 1992 was the first individual Olympic medal in the history of Croatian sports since the Croatian independence. Ivanišević, great Olympian and winner of Wimbledon 2001, one of the most successful Croatian tennis players of all time and athletes in general, has won a second bronze medal at the same Olympics in Men’s Doubles with Goran Prpić. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona, he was also the first Croatian flag-bearer. The holders of bronze are also the members of men's rowing eight in Sydney in 2000 - Igor Boraska (Olympian who has also performed at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in

Bronze medalists are also the weightlifter Nikolaj Pešalov (Sydney 2002) and tennis pair Mario Ančić and Ivan Ljubičić (Athens 2004), which are also most responsible for the Croatian winning of the Davis Cup in 2005. Snježana Pejčić is the holder of bronze medal won at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 in one of the oldest organized sports in Croatia, shooting. Her bronze medal from Summer Olympics was the first Olympic medal won by the Croatian female athlete since the Croatian independence in 1992. Olympic bronze medals won by Martina Zubčić and Sandra Šarić at the Beijing Olympics 2008 are the first medals in Croatian taekwondo. The third Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo was won by Lucija Zaninović at the London Olympics 2012. There is also a bronze medal won by biathlete Jakov Fak at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010, the first and so far the only Croatian Olympic medal in Nordic discipline. The one and only team's Olympic bronze wan won by the handball team at the London Olympics 2012 - Mirko Alilović, Venio Losert (triple Olympian with two gold and one bronze medal), Manuel Štrlek, Ivan Ninčević, Ivan Čupić, Zlatko Horvat, Igor Vori, Jakov Gojun, Drago Vuković, Blaženko Lacković, Domagoj Krešimir Ćosić
Duvnjak, Ivano Balić Marko Kopljar, Denis Buntić and Damir Bičanić.
Olympic foundations and their builders throughout the history The international sports achievements of Croatian basketball, especially at the end of the last century, were strongly influenced by the triple Olympian Kresimir Ćosić, multiple World and European Champion, basketball star of all time, holder of the gold medal in Moscow in 1980 and two silver (Mexico 1968 and Montreal 1976). Among the names highly appreciated by the basketball and sports world is certainly the name of the triple Olympian Andro Knego with gold, silver and bronze. Silver Olympians Žana Lelas, Kornelija Kvesić and Danira Nakić Bilić, as well as bronze duo Mira Bjedov Nikolić and Sanja Ožegović have certainly made a mark on basketball as well. Great female Olympians of Croatian sports are the handball medalists: Biserka Višnjić and Mirjana Ognjenović (most decorated Croatian handball players with gold and silver medal) as well as Katica Ileš and Ana Titlić with a silver medal – a quartet whose achievements are even today a role model to many generations of handball players. Canoeist Matija Ljubek with even four Olympic medals (two gold, one silver and one bronze) is one of the most awarded Croatian athletes at all. Ljubek was a multiple World Champion and - after the active career - he continued working as sports official who has Mate Parlov
woven canoeing into the Croatian and international Olympic family. A strong contribution to the international reputation of Croatian sports was certainly given by the boxer Mate Parlov, winner of Olympic gold in Light Heavyweight (Munich 1972) and holder of the title of World Amateur Champion, followed by Damir Škaro (holder of bronze medal in Seoul in 1988) and Željko Mavrović, European champion in professional boxing and challenger for the World Heavyweight title. The only Olympic medal in Croatian table tennis, the silver one, was brought from Seoul in 1988 by Zoran Primorac, while the legend of Croatian sports is certainly Dragutin Šurbek, Croatian table tennis player with the highest number of European and world trophies. Tamara Boroš is one of the best Croatian female athletes, multiple medalist at European and World Championships in predominantly Asian competition. On the list of swimming notables there are, above all, Đurdica Bjedov, gold and silver Olympian (Mexico 1968) and Gordan Kožulj, holder of world record in backstroke. In Croatian football that achieved its greatest success in 1998 by winning the third place at the World Cup in France, a special place belongs to the top goal scorer from that tournament, Davor Šuker, today’s President of the Croatian Football Federation and FIFA Executive Committee member.
by the gold Olympian Sandra Perković, the World and European Champion and one of the world’s best female athlete for many years, includes also the names of the golden European champion and holder of the world bronze in parallel bars, gymnast Mario Možnik, holder of European bronze medal in high jump Ana Šimić, followed by the junior champion in super heavyweight Filip Hrgović who, after the break in London in 2012, brings back the Croatian boxing at the Olympics, the current World Champions in coxless pairs, brothers Martin and Valent Sinković, as well as many other top athletes.
Croatian sports of tomorrow Croatian sports will soon be able to count on bright young hopes, such as tennis players Borna Ćorić and Ana Konjuh, athlete Martin Marković, swimmer Nikola Obrovac, taekwondo Ivana Babić (current World Junior Champion in the category up to 55 kg), judoka sisters Barbara and Brigita Matić or, for example, national junior basketball team (U18) - Roko Badžim, Borna Kapusta, Josip Jukić, Goran Filipović, Luka Božić, Lovro Mazalin, Nik Slavica, Marko Arapović, Dragan Bender and Ante Toni Žižić. One should not forget the very talented coxless four rowing crew (Bernard Samardžić, Filip Pedić, Josip Banović and Toni Čavka) or even younger athletes, such as skiers Leona Popović or Ida Štimac and many other exceptional talents who are just starting their journey towards great sports successes.

mountains, an ideal destination for those seeking for the union with whispering of the woods, gurgling whisper of mountain streams and springs, as well as for those who wish to experience the natural and cultural attractions along with pleasure and benefits of Nordic walking. Croatia is a place of diversity. It is the place where two climates rule, while their mix creates a beneficial weather effect throughout the year. Moreover, maybe Croatia’s climate and configuration differences or its history are exactly that what makes this country a place of contrasts, colors and scents. It is a land of heritage, historical cities and buildings – the historical core of Dubrovnik or Diocletian's Palace and the medieval Split, the Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik, historical core in Trogir and early Christian complex of the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč. As well as the plain of Stari Grad, the largest fertile plain on Adriatic islands, situated on the island of Hvar - the place where the ancient Greek division of land, system of roads and terraced plots are preserved up to the present day. It is the best-preserved ancient cadaster in the Mediterranean, which, like all the aforementioned sites, as well as the National Park Plitvice Lakes, are included on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Croatia is also a country of national parks, nature parks and many protected nature reserves where rare plants and animal species are protected from extinction, protecting thus also the

natural values of ecosystems in these areas. However, Croatia is also a country of rich intangible heritage, seductive scents, colorful city markets, modern buildings and rural households. It is a country full of flavors of not only Mediterranean but also of continental cuisine, which is based on the tradition of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, the flavors created by the influence of sun, sea, wind, fertile plains and spicy, fragrant plants whose harmony pleases - in superb way - the taste buds and palates of each guest. Croatia is a hospitable, seductive combination of modern and traditional, urban city rhythms and pristine natural beauty, modern life and traditional heritage. Because of all that, rare will be the guest to leave Croatia empty-handed. Homes around the world will echo, for a long time, with the sounds of the “a Capella” singing or “bećarac” songs, full of scents of Mediterranean herbs and delicacies of the Croatian cuisine, adorned by Pag, Hvar and Lepoglava lace, traditional wooden toy or “licitar” from the Croatian Zagorje – pieces of the recognizable Croatian identity. For a long, long time, the photo albums will remind you of irresistible places in the Mediterranean. The places whose streets, metaphorically speaking, lead you into the interior of a rich millennial history, as Croatian cities are a treasury of museums, galleries, churches, historic buildings and cultural heritage monuments, that reveal their visitors the secrets of the past, bygone times, battles, events and people.

Frankovka Feričanci While in a small Slavonian village of Feričanci the grape Frankovka ripens, at the same time, in a nearby forest Slavonian oak grows. Both absorb sunshine and nutrients from the same soil, waiting to meet and become one. After fermentation, Frankovka ages in Slavonian oak barrels and develops into an excellent red wine.
