MATCH SPONSOR

WELCOME BILLY WOOD CHAIRMAN / CEO
Welcome to The Continental Pilot Field as we host the board, management, coaches, players and most importantly supporters of Margate FC.

Firstly, it feels like a lifetime ago since I’ve seen you all as I have missed a couple of travelling games coupled with home games being postponed, therefore it’ll be great to see you all today.
I know results haven’t been the best for the team the last couple of games but it’s on us all as a collective to get it right and I have no doubt Gary and Jon have it in hand and know how to turn the corner.
The playoffs are still a realistic aim with the current circumstances, and we will see how we get on over the coming weeks, that all starts with today’s game!
Unfortunately, in Sunday’s Women’s game versus
Fulham, Izzy Burt suffered a snapped patellar tendon and will be out for a significant period, I would like to thank all the players, the volunteers and friends of the club who helped on Sunday, putting the welfare of the player first before anything else … the way it should be.

As Gary has said in his notes it’s been a bit rough on and off the pitch recently and without saying too much that is the case. However, I will do my upmost to push forward and make sure we give our all regardless of the circumstances to be competitive, keep united and keep our identity.

GARY ELPHICK THE GAFFER

Afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Margate FC.
We met them not long ago in the league in December and managed to gain a well-earned victory, but today’s game I feel will be just as hard if not harder with a new management team now in place for them. They seem to have turned a corner.

We ourselves have been going through a rough time on and off the pitch the last couple of weeks. Illness, injuries and some unforeseen circumstances have happened. I feel though hopefully these experiences will only make myself and the management team stronger and also bring the players closer together. We have always prided ourselves on our togetherness and work ethic and I'm hoping today’s match can showcase this.

Onwards and upwards! ...
Gary

Happy Birthday to Joseph Knight for last Wednesday
From all of your football family at Hastings United Football Club ...
Tom’s association with the U’s goes back to October 1979, when he started as a part-time groundsman under the newly appointed manager, Peter Sillett, with the remit of mowing, rolling and marking out the pitch.
His tasks were made more onerous due to poor drainage under the Pilot Field, turning the playing surface into a mudbath by Christmas. Other daily tasks followed, including harrowing the speedway track, picking up litter, sweeping the stands and terraces, cleaning the dressing rooms and many other menial tasks, not to mention acting as Physio on a number of occasions.
This role continued on and off until the late 1990’s when he took on the mantle of matchday PA Announcer until his retirement in 2012. Even to this day, he still looks for the U’s result first every Saturday, and although he’s now mov ed to Eastbourne, he can still be seen at home matches carrying on his support.
GUT FEELING SIMON STODDART’S
My views - not United's - on semi-pro football and occasionally, other topics.
WEATHER PERMITTING
Hmmmm, yes, let's hope we are all here at The Pilot Field for this afternoon's league encounter with Margate - which comes just a few weeks after the away game at Hartsdown Park from which we came away with 3 points after a 2-1 win. Margate have been struggling of late and will have breathed a big sigh of relief after seeing off Wingate & Finchley last weekend. Deadlines mean I knock this column up not knowing how they got on at Kingstonian on Wednesday evening.
referee to decide otherwise. Result - one wasted trip for all concerned, United copping their travel costs and all the overnight graft by Simon Rudkins and his crew - for nothing.
There's only one way to deal with situations like that. It had been sub zero all week - so just bite the bullet and postpone the day before. No football, people brassed off all round, nobody happy - but uncertainty removed and that worst option of opposition travelling for nothingavoided. Enfield's wasn't the only wasted journey. Home clubs picking up the travel tab adds insult to injury!
Of course you can have an improvement in the weather over Friday night. Weather forecasts are more reliable so you could argue for giving it a go. Which United did a fortnight ago - for nothing.
The officials deciding whether to play or not are on a hiding to nothing. Game off brasses off lots of people, game on and players pick up injuries on rock hard areas where the sun didn't reachquestions asked re the decision to play the game.
The weather usually plays a disruptive part in the football season this time of the year. And it has certainly been at it's worst this last few weeks.
A fortnight ago, Enfield Town were here - but not for long. They made their way down from North of the River on the basis of the favourable pitch inspection that morning only for the match

Best efforts overnight to get the Enfield Town game on came to nothing.
HIT AND MISS
It is a bit, lately, eh. Aveley are turning into a bogey side for us, two encounters this season both ending 2-1 to them. Ahead for best part of an hour at their place a week ago, Monday - then we conceded two in a couple of minutes.
The goals against column still looks very respectable
with only Bishop's Stortford having conceded less as of a week ago, but we are leaking them of late. Coincidence that it tallies up with no Tom Chalmers up and down that right flank? Whatever, it'll be good to see him back.
Goals for remains an issue with United well down that list. After last weekend's games, just 5 clubs had scored less than the U's. You certainly can't say Gary isn't looking to resolve that problem! Getting difficult keeping up with the comings and goings eh!
And no goals from the encounter a week ago at Haringey Borough where there was to be no U's comeback as we saw at Brightlingsea Regent and indeed, the home encounter a few weeks ago with Borough.

nearly 70 years. I'm sure many of you will recognise John .......

RED CARD MAYHEM
I meant to share this classic earlier this season. Southern Counties Football League division 2where teams often each appoint a lino. Worthing Town were at Bosham, 3-0 up at half time. A Worthing red card was followed by Bosham getting a goal back. Then 3-2 in the 89th minute and it really kicked off as 4 red cards were produced in the 11 minutes that were still to be eventually played. A Bosham player, a Worthing player, the Worthing manager and the creme de la carte rouge creme - the Worthing lino saw red!
Haringey have gone down the digital road with their programme. The link is above and worth noting down so you can read what Jenny Collins has to say in her, er, Bell End article. Remember the bell ringing up in the main stand up to a few years ago? That was her dad who was a U's and Town supporter for
OLD FAVOURITES GOING WELL
Two or three weeks ago saw a couple of our ex Hastings Town lads coming up against each other in the technical areas at The Arctic Stadium where Cray Valley were taking on league leaders Ramsgate.

GUT FEELING SIMON STODDART’S
He had taken on a not promising set up at The Pilot Field as United started from scratch after relegation with change of ownership, team break up and a pitch in appalling condition (after a new drainage system had been installed) thrown in. United had just beaten Corby Town 3-1 to make a decent start but a grim season lay ahead as Lovers did his very best with limited resources. He'd been here as a player in 1994-95, a major signing he was too with his Fooball League and Welsh international back ground. He scored crucial goals as Town worked hard to maintain their Southern Premier status 10 years or so before the formation of what we now know as the National South and North leagues.
Two good blokes who were - and I'm sure, still arewhat semi-pro football is all about. My personal choices for the two promotion spots from Isthmian SE are Ramsgate and Cray Valley. Chatham might have something to say about that - they replaced Ramsgate at the top of Isthmian SE last weekend after drubbing Ashford 4-1 at Homelands. Ramsgate were losing 2-0 at Three Bridges while Cray Valley went down to an 89th minute goal at Littlehampton.
UPDATE ... UPDATE ...
Tommy Osborne now manages Cray Valley who have recovered well after an inconsistent start and he had a good weekend getting the better of Lovers with a big big 2-0 win. Tommy O was a versatile midfielder / defender who slotted in wherever required in his Hastings Town days. Utterly dependable member of the Town squad.
The excellent Kent online site reports that Ramsgate and Steve Lovell have parted company! Lovers was being assisted by his son Mark who played a few games for the U's and St Leonards around the turn of the century. Hmmmm, weird, Ramsgate going well etc etc ....

The SE division looks interesting after Tuesday's games, Chatham lost at Beckenham Town who went 2nd. All 4 promoted sides are doing well in fact.
WARMER CLIMES BECKON
You'll be getting this column from my Philippines office starting with the Folkestone game on Tuesday. And retirement in the next two or three months will see the season out and a substantial part of my time way way away in South East Asia. 11.45 pm kick offs, 3.45 am for evening games .......
Fly out tomorrow for 4 weeks, back to see out 22/23 and finalise retirement. See ya'll in a month or so.

HISTORY
The club was founded in 1896 and joined the Southern Football League in 1933. After a spell in the Kent League after World War II the team returned to the Southern League in 1959 and remained there until 2001 when they gained promotion to the Football Conference, the highest level of English non-league football. Their stay at this level saw the team forced to ground share with other clubs due to drawn-out and problematic redevelopment work at their Hartsdown Park stadium, and during the three years spent away from their own ground they were expelled from the Conference National and subsequently relegated to the Isthmian League.
After the Second World War the Gate continued to play in the Kent League under new manager Charlie Walker, who led the team to two Kent League championships but was then controversially sacked. The team slumped during a succession of rapid managerial changes which only ended in 1950 when Almer Hall was appointed manager, a post he was to hold for the next twenty years. Under Hall the team won a host of local cup honours and reached the rounds proper of the FA Cup on several occasions, but never managed to match this success in league competition.
In 1959–60 Margate returned to the Southern League after the Kent League folded, and in 1962–63 won the Division One championship and with it promotion to the Premier Division. Two years later the club turned full-time professional but this policy proved financially untenable when the team were relegated back to Division One in 1965–66. Nonetheless, they won promotion at the first attempt and returned to the Premier Division in 1967.

During the 1970s Margate endured severe financial

problems and a series of mediocre league seasons but took part in two famous FA Cup ties. In 1971 the Gate lost 11–0 to Bournemouth, with Ted MacDougall scoring a cup record nine goals. Then, a year later, Margate beat Swansea City and Walton & Hersham to set up a third round tie against First Division Tottenham Hotspur, then UEFA Cup holders. A record crowd of over 14,000 packed into Hartsdown Park for a match which Margate lost 6–0.
In 1996, the club's centenary year, the club appointed Chris Kinnear as manager. In 1997–98 he took the team to the first round proper of the FA Cup where they played Fulham in a home tie that drew a crowd of 5,100. Although the Gate took the lead, the Cottagers eventually won 2–1. The following season saw the club finally win promotion to the Southern League Premier Division, albeit only after an appeal was lodged against the league's initial refusal to allow the team promotion due to the club failing to carry out necessary ground improvements in time. The Premier Division championship followed in the 2000–01 season, and with it promotion to the Football Conference.
The 2001–02 season was Gate's first ever season of Conference football and they finished the season in eighth place. In the 2002–03 season the team began ground sharing at Dover Athletics’ Crabble while redevelopment work took place at Hartsdown Park, but various problems stalled the planned redevelopment. On the pitch, Margate enjoyed more success in the FA Cup when, after defeating Leyton Orient in the first round, they were drawn at home to Cardiff City in the second round, but lost 3–0 at Crabble. The following season, despite finishing sixteenth, the Gate were forcibly relegated one division due to the ongoing delays and problems with the redevelopment plans for Hartsdown Park.
Margate spent the 2004–05 season in the Conference South, now ground sharing at Ashford Town. Amidst ongoing issues with the redevelopment work, which at one point made it seem very likely that the club would fold completely, Margate were again relegated to the Isthmian League Premier Division.
After 10 years in the Ryman Premier Division Margate won promotion back to the Vanarama National League South after beating Hendon in the play-off final at the Earlsmead Stadium. Ryan Moss scored the winning goal as Terry Brown’s side celebrated promotion back to second tier of Non-league Football.
Margate’s first season back in the National League South was a rollercoaster ride with survival secured on the final day of the season despite a 2-0 defeat to Bath City. A run of 11 defeats from their final 12 games left Margate needing results elsewhere to keep them in the division and Weston Super-Mare’s 1-1 draw away at Havant & Waterlooville meant Havant were relegated.
Since the 2017-2018 season Margate have been in the Isthmian Premier League, where under new ownership the Club have installed a state of the art 3G Pitch, plans are in place to develop the stadium further and build a hotel on site. The Club narrowly missed out on the play offs in the 2017-18 season and after the departure of manager Steve Watt the Club went through a period of transition and were able to avoid relegation in the 2018-2019 season thanks largely to the presence of

Ground: Hartsdown Park, Margate Capacity: 3,000 (400 Seated)
Jay Saunders as temporary manager. At the start of the 2019-2020 campaign fan favourite Jay became our permanent manager and and is still at the helm for season 2021/22, after season 2020/21 was made null and void.
The 2021/22 saw Margate enjoy their most successful season in a while as they finished 8th in the Isthmian Premier Division, and reached the Velocity Trophy final for the first time in 24 years. The final ended in a 4-0 defeat to Horsham, however the Blues also reached the Quarter-final of the Kent Senior Cup, where they were beaten by eventual winners Dartford FC. At the end of the campaign, Manager Jay Saunders was approached by National League South side Tonbridge Angels, and he decided on a new chapter with them and left Margate in May 2022 to take up the position as Manager at the Longmead Stadium.

The Club moved quickly to install a new Manager as Andy Drury was appointed on the same day as Saunders departed. A former Ipswich, Luton Town and Stevenage player, Drury posseses extremely good knowledge of the game. He had spent just a handful of games in charge at Whitstable Town, however this is his first full season in Management.
Sadly after just six months in the job, the Blues dismissed Drury and Reece Prestedge and Ben Greenhalgh were installed as interim joint managers on 26th December 2022.
PLAYER PEN PICTURES MARGATE FC
JAMES BESSEY-SALDANHA – Striker
Winger, James Bessey-Saldanha signed for The Gate having played most recently at fellow Kent side, Sevenoaks Town. The 25-year old impressed in behindclosed-doors friendlies, so much so, Jay Saunders was quick to secure his services for the 2021/22 campaign. Bessey-Saldanha was the latest player to renew his stay with the Blues in the summer of 2022 after the appointment of Andy Drury.
LEWIS KNIGHT – Defender
BEN GREENHALGH – Midfielder
Ben Greenhalgh joined the ‘Gate’ in the summer of 2021 to team up with his former Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders. The 29-year-old can play as either a Midfielder or Striker and will provide extra firepower to the Blues. Greenhalgh shot to fame after winning Sky Sports reality show ‘Football’s Next Star’ where he fought off 20,000 other entries to win a six-month professional contract, which was then extended another further year upon its expiry. Despite never playing for Inter, Greenhalgh did impress whilst in Italy scoring eight goals in 12 games for Como. Back in England the 29-year-old played a crucial part in a successful Maidstone United side managed by former Margate Manager Jay Saunders. Other clubs include Concord Rangers, Dartford, Tonbridge Angels and Hemel Hempstead as well as time spent in Scotland playing for Inverness and Stenhousemuir.
DANIEL JINADU – Goalkeeper
Jinadu joined Margate in October 2022 on dual registration from National League side Dartford FC. The 20-year-old shot stopper spent the 2021/22 season with Barnsley where he impressed largely for the U23 side after joining from West Ham. After departing Oakwell, Jinadu linked up with Dartford where he has played back-up to the Darts current number one Joe Young.
28-year-old Lewis Knight joined the club in the summer of 2021 from National League side Billericay Town. The commanding centre-half has enjoyed spells with East Thurrock, St Albans and Maidstone and Billericay before making the switch to Hartsdown Park.
HARRISON HATFULL – Defender
The 20-year-old played for Margate in the 18/19 season before signing for Bearsted. He re-signed for the Gate in October 2021 and is now an important part of Manager Andy Drury’s plans ahead of the 2022/23 season.

TAYLOR FISHER – Defender
Left-back Fisher joined the ‘Gate during the summer of 2022 having won the Players, Players of the Year, Supporters Player of the Year and Manager’s Player of the Year at the club’s end of season awards night for the 2021/22 season. 22-year-old Fisher has previously played for Dartford FC as well as Sittingbourne.
HARRY HUDSON – Defender
21-year-old Hudson started his career in the West Ham Youth set up before signing for Watford U18’s. Hudson went on to make appearances for the Hornets U23’s side. The talented centre-half later signed for Billericay Town, before making the switch to the Tonbridge Angels where he featured 32 times in all competitions during the 2021/22 season. Hudson signed for new Manager Andy Drury in June 2022.
PETER OJEMEN – Defender
The 21-year old Defender can play at Left-Back or in the Centre, and adds further versatility across Andy Drury’s new look back-line. Ojemen featured 23 times last season for Corinthian Casuals in the Isthmian Premier League as they finished 14th in the final standings. Before signing for the Casuals, Ojemen enjoyed stints at Barking FC, Fisher and Welling Town.

TROY HOWARD – Midfielder
20 year-old Howard impressed during the 2021/22 season at Deal Town, and Manager Andy Drury moved quickly to bring the pacey winger to Hartsdown Park this summer. Howard is returning to familiar surroundings having been a product of Margate’s Academy, before signing for Deal Town.
CAMERON BRODIE – Midfielder
The Midfielder joined Andy Drury’s side on loan from National League South side Dartford FC in August 2022. The defensive midfielderhas progressed through the Dartford FC Academy, and signed a contract with the Darts in the summer of 2022 under new Manager Alan Dowson. The midfielder spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Cray Wanderers where he won the Supporters Player of the Year.
ADEYINKA COLE – Midfielder
The box-to-box Midfielder became Manager Andy Drury’s eighth signing of the summer. Cole featured last season for Isthmian Premier side Haringey Borough. The 27-year old has vast experience in the non-league game, with former clubs including Leiston Grays Athletic, Dulwich Hamlet, Enfield, Hemel Hempstead, Billericay and Braintree Town.
SAM BLACKMAN – Midfielder
Midfielder Sam Blackman returned to Hartsdown Park in the summer of 2021 having previously played for the Blues during the 2017/18 season. The combative midfielder will provide manager Andy Drury additional experience in the middle of the park. Blackman started his career at Leatherhead before moving to Hartsdown Park in 2017. After leaving the ‘Gate, Blackman moved to Concord Rangers for the first of his two spells at the Aspect arena, where he featured as a Concord Rangers player in his second spell in the delayed 2019/20 season FA Trophy at Wembley Stadium. Other clubs include Dartford and Hythe Town.

Burly Kevin was a prodigious goalscorer at school, but it was his explosive pace which troubled the Yeovil defenders in his Southern League debut for the U’s on 21 October 1967. In that abject 1967/68 season, only 16 points were won. Relegation was inevitable. For the 1968/69 season, he became a centre-back. However, he reverted to a striking role in the following year when he scored twenty-two Southern League goals and thirty in all competitions. He netted twenty-one times in 1970/71, too, bringing about his transfer to Chelsea in July 1971 for £2,000, worth around £2m today.
Alas, after playing a handful of reserve games he returned to Southern League football with Margate in November 1971, after the Kent club paid a ‘substantial’ fee for him. He scored 34 goals in 91 Southern League appearances before being enticed back to Hastings in September 1973 for a four-figure fee. He scored ten goals for the U’s in 1973/74. But it was as a centre-back that he captained Hastings to promotion to the Premier Division at the end of the 1976/77 season, under Bobby Drake.
Tragically, Kevin died in 2011 after losing a brave battle against cancer.

HASTINGS UNITED ANNOUNCE THE LOAN SIGNING OF LOUIS COLLINS
Striker Louis Collins is back in the Pitching In Isthmian League after agreeing a loan deal with Hastings United.
The Tonbridge Angels striker returns to our ranks after previous spells with Sevenoaks Town and Margate. He signed for Angels in the summer, after making seven appearances for Gate at the end of last season. prior to his time at Hartsdow n Park he was turning out a step higher for one of Gate's local rivals, Dover Athletic. He had two spells with Sevenoaks Town, and prior to that was with Scunthorpe United, and also played youth football with Millwall, Ebbsfleet United and Bromley. He scored 47 goals in 23 games with United's Under 15's, and was also top scorer as an Under 16 with Bromley, winning the Kent Youth League Golden Boot two seasons in succession before heading to Scunthorpe.
DAJON GOLDING MAKES A SCORING DEBUT FOR CRAY WANDERERS

The Cray Wanderers faithful may not have had any points to celebrate after a five goal thriller against Bishop's Stortford, but they could celebrate the debut goal of new signing Dajon Golding, who put Wands ahead on sixty eight minutes before a Blue comeback.
Dajon has most recently been in National League South with Tonbridge Angels - his second Step Two club this season as he started the campaign with our Play-off winners from last season, Cheshunt. Of course he left a promotion-winning club to join the Ambers, as he was a big part of Worthing's title win last season, making forty-nine appearances for the Mackerel Men and scoring ten goals. Prior to his time with Worthing he was a Rook, playing twentytwo times for Lewes during the 2018-19 campaign and another thirty-five - with eleven goals - the following season, prior to his departure for Woodside Road.
He has also played for Phoenix Sports and Hastings United, after coming through Dartford’s Academy.
BILLY KNOTT SIGNS ON AT MARGATE
Midfielder Billy, from Canvey Island originally, is widely travelled, having had a youth career that spanned Concord Rangers, West Ham United and Chelsea. He then moved to the North East of England, where he signed for Sunderland, and whilst with the Black Cats had loan time at AFC Wimbledon, Wycombe Wanderers and Woking, before ruining the alliter ation by trying Port Vale.
It didn't work out for him at the Stadium of Light, so he moved a little further south to Bradford City, and after leaving Valley Parade played for Gillingham, Rochdale and Lincoln City.
He returned to his roots with Concord Rangers in 2018, and has also played for Chelmsford City and Bowers & Pitsea, before making two appearances for Canvey at the start of last season. He also turned out for Great Wakering Rovers last season, and this season has been back with Bowers, making six appearances.
MARGATE DEBUT FOR NATHAN WOOD
Margate gave a debut to forward/attacking midfielder Nathan Wood in their defeat at Horsham on January 14, after he made a move to Hartsdown Park from Tonbridge Angels.
Nathan has recently been playing Isthmian football for Ramsgate on loan from Angels, making five appearances for the South East leaders. He played Academy football for Southampton and youth football for Wimbledon - and played eighteen times for Leatherhead during the 201718 campaign, where he came on as a substitute in the televised FA Cup First Round win at Billericay Town.
He went on to play for Walton Casuals, Herne Bay and Molesey, and then made twenty-five appearances for Bedfont Sports during the 2019-20 campaign, scoring five goals in the process. He then headed to Woking, and also spent time on dual-registration with Farnborough.
After leaving the Cards he started this season with Faversham Town, scoring four goals in thirteen games before his move to Longmead.

DAVID SMITH MAKES HIS THIRD PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN PREMIER LOAN MOVE OF THE SEASON, HEADING TO HASTINGS
Striker David Smith was magnificent for Folkestone Invicta last season, managing thirty five goals- form which saw him snapped up by National League Bromley in the summer. But David is now back in the Pitching In Isthmian Premier for the third time this season, having been announced as a loan signing for Hastings Unitedshortly after being recalled by Bromley from a spell with Margate.
David made four appearances for Gate- following the eight he played for Hornchurch earlier this season.
David signed for Invicta in the summer of 2020. He was picked up by the stripes after a scintillating season with Ashford United, twenty three goals in forty one appearances- including a four goal haul in one match at Three Bridges.
He moved to the Nuts and Bolts from Dover Athletic, where he didn't really get much of a chance to shine. He moved to the National League side after breaking through at Sittingbourne, and did spent a second spell with the Brickies on loan from Athletic. He came through the Academy at Maidstone United.
His spell with Hastings is scheduled to continue to the end of the season.
RODARI REJOINS REBELS
Crawley Town striker Davide Rodari has joined Worthing on loan until the end of the season.
It will be the 23-year-old’s second spell at Worthing after a short loan at the club in February last year. He netted four times in as many starts in his short period with the Reds last season, including a brace at home against Enfield Town to set up a 3-0 win.

Rodari was recalled early from his loan on the South Coast by his parent club before being sent to Dorking Wanderers where he finished the season, making eight appearances, including four starts, scoring a single goal.

The striker spent the first half of this season on loan at fellow National League South side Dartford where he featured on 19 occasions, netting three times.
Born in Switzerland, Rodari is of Dutch and Italian descent but grew up in Novara, Italy. He moved to England in 2016 and played youth football for Eastbourne Borough before signing for Hastings in 2017.
He caught the eye during a four-year spell at the Pilot Field and famously scored eight times for the U’s in a League Cup hammering of East Grinstead Town in November 2019.
As well as his short time at Worthing last season, boss Adam Hinshelwood worked with Rodari during his time as manager of Hastings United.

ON THIS DAY FEBRUARY 4

1948
Transfer fees were going mad with a new record transfer fee being set on 4th February 1948 when Len Shackleton made the short move from Newcastle to Sunderland. At £50 more than the previous record the £20,050 fee was as newsworthy as the £50m fee is nowadays. His debut for Newcastle in 1946 was probably the perfect one - he scored 6 goals for the Magpies in their 13-0 defeat of Newport County. Later in his autobiography one of the chapters was entitled 'What the average director knows about football' - it was blank!
2017
The trouble with a manager getting a touchline ban is usually means that they end up sitting with the plebs...that us us supporters! And that can be an uncomfortable experience as Arsène Wenger found out when sitting with the paying spectators at Stamford Bridge during a fourmatch touchline ban received at the start of 2017 for abusing a fourth official. The Arsenal manager sat next to an Arsenal fan who was his gardener - but the Frenchman had no idea who he was! “But I do have a big garden..." was Wenger's get-out clause!
