WELCOME TO THE FOURTH EDITION OF THE ANNUAL HULL FILM FESTIVAL This year’s festival is bigger than ever, taking place over 14 days in multiple venues in the city. We invite you to join us to discover the very best in new film from around the world, with titles that are award-winning, critically-acclaimed, unashamedly independent, and a little out of left field. We have a jam-packed 30 films, from 10 different countries. The majority are Hull exclusive screenings, including an English Premiere, Yorkshire Premieres and special guests for post-film Q&As. The festival opens with the Yorkshire Premiere of Alone in Berlin, starring Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson. Foreign language drama comes to us from Sweden with comedy A Man Called Ove; Russia, for quirky-drama Zoology; and French titles including The Odyssey and The Midwife. There’s striking British drama in The Levelling and The Ghoul, and real-life drama in housing-crisis documentary Dispossession. We also explore the themes of water, fishing and ferries in three exclusive documentaries, screening in partnership with Sheffield Doc/Fest. Celebrate the best in Short Film with the 2017 BAFTA Shorts, and our first Yorkshire Short Film competition. Enjoy Hitchcock’s silent masterpiece The Lodger, with a spine-tingling live score by Yorkshire Silent Film. And join us at an epic outdoor screening of the film of 2017, La La Land, at Stage @The Dock. Add a counter-culture classic (The Graduate), new family treats (My Life as a Courgette, The Red Turtle), A David Lynch celebration with a new documentary and a screening of Mulholland Drive, as well as much, much more, and we hope you’ll agree that this is the best Hull Film Festival line-up yet. And with great value tickets, discounts for Hull Independent Cinema members, and weekly Passes you can afford to sit back and enjoy it all. We’d like to acknowledge the support this year of our main funders, The British Film Institute and Film Hub North; our hosts Vue Cinema Hull, Hull Truck Theatre, Stage @The Dock and Fruit; and our supporters WeWatchFilms, Cult Cinema Sunday, Yorkshire Silent Film, Sheffield/Doc Fest, St Stephen’s shopping centre and Hull UK City of Culture 2017. We hope you enjoy the films we have to show you this year; it’s a real pleasure to be able to share them with Hull audiences. See you at the festival, Damien Greco Festival Director
