BEN HUR

and Hull Indepednent Cinema present

The 1926 silent film version with live score

Directed by Fred Niblo | USA | 1926 | 2 hours 23 min Judah Ben Hur is a Jewish prince who is betrayed by his boyhood friend, the Roman, Massala. Sent to sea as a galley slave on a Roman ship and separated from his mother and sister, Ben Hur’s life is ruined until, one day, his defiance and integrity impresses a Roman general aboard ship and his fortunes quickly change. The most epic silent film of them all, Ben Hur is a gripping tale of love and revenge. At its premiere in 1926 nothing like it had ever been seen before. The dazzling special effects, thrilling action sequences, glorious technicolour sequences and a cast of thousands helped Ben Hur make MGM’s reputation as the blockbuster studio. The famous chariot race in the Circus Maximus is jaw-dropping even today - captured by forty two cameras, with hundreds of horses and thousands of extras, the sequence was recreated almost shot-by-shot for the 1959 remake with Charlton Heston.

hull independent cinema DISCOVER SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Hull Independent Cinema is a local charity, run by a small team of volunteers, bringing great film to new audiences as we work towards our long-term goal of a new venue for independent, world and art cinema in Hull. 2017 is a really important and exciting year for HIC as we’re the main delivery partner for the British Film Institute’s funding for the UK City of Culture film programme. The BFI is funding ‘Transformative Film Culture For Hull’ as part of its National Lottery-funded BFI Film Audience Network and led by its lead partner BFI Film Hub North. Delivered through Hull 2017 and by Hull Independent Cinema and a unique partnership of film festival, educational and archive partners from across the north, the film programme will bring a packed programme of more than 400 screenings, one-off events and film festivals throughout the year to Hull and the region. The programme reflects the BFI’s activities across the UK to bring film to audiences where there is less opportunity for them to experience and engage in film, and to support local film networks and audience initiatives. There will be much to explore, celebrate and enjoy. By coming to one of our films you’re not just getting a great night of entertainment, you’re also supporting our long-term plans to create a new independent cinema in Hull. We’re always keen to hear what you think - if you have any ideas or questions please let us know. Thank you for your continued support.
