Welcome to the Hull Independent Cinema programme for April - June 2018. For your viewing pleasure we’re delighted to present another fantastic selection of new-release drama, animation, documentary and more, from countries including Russia, Chile and Japan, alongside the best of English-language independent cinema from Britain and the US. Alongside our main programme we welcome back to Hull the fantastic Doc’n Roll Film Festival, five days of incredible documentaries and live music in early May, including our first-ever screening at the legendary New Adelphi Club. Also in May we have another visit from the ever-popular Yorkshire Silent Film Festival, this time for three great film programmes in two days, all featuring the brilliant improvised musical accompaniment of Jonathan Best and friends. And on top of all that, our friends at Cult Cinema Sunday and WeWatchFilms bring us their usual cult movies and classics back on the big screen. It’s going to be another great season of films that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Why not join us to Discover Something Different?

SOUTH - SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON’S GLORIOUS EPIC OF THE ANTARCTIC Directed by Frank Hurley UK | 1919 | 80 min

Fri 25 May, 7.00pm South is the film record of Sir Ernest Shackleton's heroic but ill-starred attempt to cross Antarctica in 1914-16. It is both a unique historical document, and a tribute to the indomitable courage of a small party of men who set out on a voyage of discovery that turned into an epic struggle for survival. At the film’s centre is the astonishing sight of the ship, Endurance, trapped in the ice. Photographer Frank Hurley captured his most dramatic shots in the blackness of the polar night by surrounding the ship with twelve magnesium flares. These ghostly images of Endurance in its final hours are among the most unforgettable images in early cinema.

HAROLD LLOYD IN SPEEDY Directed by Ted Wilde USA | 1928 | 100 min

Sat 26 May, 3.30pm Hosted by Yorkshire’s own Professor Vanessa, join us for an afternoon of spectacular and remarkable entertainments celebrating the 250th anniversary of Circus. Featuring early films of dancing pigs, circus performers, balancing wonders and other amazing sights, this extravagant musical showcase of late-Victorian and Edwardian performance is a unique chance to see some of the most unusual and fascinating early films from archives around the world. Special thanks to Library of Congress, Lobster Films and the National Fairground and Circus Archive.

Sat 26 May, 7.00pm Harold Lloyd saves the last horse-drawn trolley car from extinction in Speedy, his last silent comedy – and one of his best. An engaging caper shot on location in New York, Speedy shows off the city as it was in 1928, including a beautiful sequence at Coney Island’s Luna Park and a breathtaking finale chase through the streets of Manhattan. Speedy is showing with a surprise Laurel and Hardy short film and the whole show will be accompanied by live piano and percussion.
