Welcome to the new Hull Independent Cinema programme for October to December 2017. Our final season of 2017 brings you a great selection of new-release drama, comedy, thrillers and more, from countries including South Korea, Sweden, Hungary and Syria, alongside the best of English-language independent cinema. Alongside our main programme we’ve more pay-what-you-want nights of discovery with Short Film City Hull; the return of our popular screenings of silent film with live music accompaniment; a short series of classic crime films as part of the Hull Noir Festival; and a special programme of short film as part of the Substance Festival. We also continue to bring you the best unreleased films from Leeds International Film Festival, but this time as a mini-season with great value ticket deals. And of course our friends at Cult Cinema Sunday and WeWatchFilms provide their own eclectic mix of cult movies and classics back on the big screen. It all adds up to another great season of films that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Why not join us to Discover Something Different?

BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN The 1925 silent film with live score

Directed by Sergei M. Eisenstein | Soviet Union | 1925 | 75 min Eisenstein’s epic dramatisation of the 1905 mutiny aboard the battleship Potemkin is regularly cited as one of the greatest films of all time. A tense, action-filled drama, this taut 75-minute film is assembled from more than 13,000 individual shots, exemplifying Eisenstein’s view that editing (or montage) is the fundamental essential of film. The famous Odessa Steps sequence has been hugely influential with directors such as Terry Gilliam, Woody Allen and Brian De Palma all paying homage to it in their films.
