Dear Members and Friends of IAKS, You now have in front of you the first “sb” of 2016, which is devoted to sports halls and arenas. On the following pages you will encounter the entire gamut of international sports hall architecture. Intricate, extremely versatile and in some cases even romantic sports halls from Australia, Denmark and Germany demonstrate the impressive and effective symbioses that usage strategies and architecture are capable of entering into. This also applies to large arenas like the Derby Arena in England, where the multiuse velodrome has been practically reinvented, and to the Tauron Arena in Krakow, Poland, where the European Handball Championship has just come to an end. The IAKS will be staging a variety of attractive events this year. The season kicks off on 8 March in Zaragoza, where our Spanish section is holding a seminar at the “Tecnodeporte” national sports equipment fair.
Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, but also from Finland, Poland and the Czech Republic. In mid-June, the Section Switzerland is inviting participants to a fact-finding tour of captivating Copenhagen, the unofficial capital of the IOC/IAKS Award. The programme is planning visits to 7(!) prize- winners of recent years – a sensational opportunity! At the beginning of December, finally, the IAKS Polish Section is holding a congress with a trade fair in Warsaw. Take advantage of the various opportunities for training and broadening your horizons! This is also a valuable chance to network and get to know new products and services for your activities and projects. I look forward to meeting you personally when the occasion arises. Sincerely,
The General Meeting of the IAKS Section Switzerland is taking place in Lausanne on 12 April. The programme includes a visit to the Olympic Museum after its recent modernisation, with its interna tionally unique exhibition dedicated to sport, athletes and the scenes of their momentous achievements. IAKS international is staging its Management Conference on Artificial Ice Rinks in Dresden from 10 to 12 May. This is where some 150 experts and participants will be gathering for an exchange of views. For the first time, we are expecting not only managers and operators of artificial ice rinks from Germany, Switzerland, Austria,

Turf innovation and changing room buildings Seminar of the IAKS Section Switzerland At the St. Jakob sports facility in Münchenstein, Roger Gut, Vice President of the IAKS Section Switzerland, welcomed the roughly 65 people attending on 16 November 2015 and hosted the event. In the morning session, talks were held on innovation, investment and the requirements for football changing room buildings. After lunch, attention was turned to alternatives to artificial turf pitches and their care and maintenance. This was followed by the practical demonstration of the replacement of grass turves in the new athletics stadium at the St. Jakob sports facility. In his talk, Eric Hardman, Head of Development at Novoter AG, Basel, outlined ways of heating, cooling and ventilating turf pitches. With pitch heating immediately beneath the turf base course, it is possible to reduce energy costs considerably and shorten the response time. The same system can also be used for producing an artificial ice pad in winter. So that no damage can be done in the installed grid of piping, the required ventilation system is also provided. He concluded by saying that these innovations enable operators to put their existing sports surfaces to various forms of extra use. The talk on the investment cost of new football pitches showed that the figures quoted are regrettably still incomplete and the ancillary expenditure on drainage, irrigation, handrails, boards for advertising, ball stop netting, lighting, equipment, areas for buildings, parking space and general access areas is often neglected. The costs associated with these items were convincingly presented. The speaker also drew attention to the fact that maintenance is dictated by the stratification of the turf pitch itself.
6
Roger Gut of maj Architekten ag, Bern, explained that it was indispensable for a football ground to adapt its service building to the number of pitches. Speaking from his experience, he outlined the points that must always be borne in mind. He propagated the proposition that “function takes priority over design” for such buildings. The afternoon talks started with so-called natural winter turf, a solution on a par with artificial turf. In his second talk, Eric Hardman presented a solution for training and match competition without artificial turf. This alternative offers football players a pitch fully available from autumn through to spring with a special grass m ixture. Between spring and autumn there is then enough time for regeneration. He was followed by Fritz Schweizer, Swiss Green AG, Lohn, who explained pitch maintenance in detail. Proper professional maintenance reduces costs over the pitch’s lifetime and helps to maximise its weekly availability. With reference to a video produced by Basel’s sports department, its Director Peter Howald explained what proper maintenance involves. The big response and turnout of over 65 participants reflected the topicality and importance of the subject of natural turf. The papers and further information can be downloaded at www.iaks.ch.

urban Development Neudorf sports centre
This new sports hall from AZC in Strasbourg is contributing to the city’s urban development. It makes widespread use of wood as a raw maÂterial and places one sports hall on top of another. The Neudorf area of Strasbourg is undergoing a major programme of redevelopment to fill the void that currently separates the city centre from its southern neighbourhoods. The sports centre is one of the major new projects for the neighbourhood. The architectural design was closely linked to decisions about construction, supported by the demands of the brief and the city’s desire to use, in quantity, a renewable and also sustainable material: timber. The project consists of a concrete plinth that accommodates the multi-sports hall, the stands, changing rooms, entrance hall and cafeteria, on top of which sits a box that houses a fencing hall with its own dedicated changing rooms. Above this concrete plinth is a steel-reinforced timber post structure. The structural columns are positioned at 1.6m intervals, defining the architecture of the facades with their regular rhythm and thickness and allowing transparency. The Neudorf sports centre provides facilities for a range of clubs and associations, including fencing, handball, basketball, badminton and gymnastics, serving a varied public of schoolchildren and adults. The main sports hall is sunken 2m into the ground, reducing the volume of the building and placing it favourably in relation to the public space around it. www.zundelcristea.com

Simplicity
Bechburg-Oensingen sports centre The multifunctional hall of the small Swiss community of Oensingen, which opened in October 2015, is an expression of, above all, simplicity. Thanks to its location on the existing access route, it fits neatly into the site of the existing school complex, while its reduced selection of materials (fair-face insulating concrete) and uncluttered ground-plan layout strongly influence the building’s outward aspect. The hall was designed by ffbk Architekten in Münchenstein, Bale. The partially sunken building volume permits ground-floor access and, upon entry, offers straightforward orientation and a view right across the playing area. With an alternation of open and closed areas in the building structure and façades, the interior is marked by exciting views from the inside outwards, from the outside inwards and within the building. The large hall with its 200 spectator seats is also suitable for “large-court” floorball, which is popular here, handball and many other sports. With its plain fair-face concrete and large windows, it looks reduced and almost humble; its true volume of 17,500m³ can only be appreciated in the interior, as the hall has been lowered about 5 metres into the ground. www.ffbk.ch

Egg Box
School sports hall in Klaus Like the school building, the new hall by Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten in Bregenz is essentially a timber structure, built to the highest ecological speci fications and to low-energy standard. The activities in the hall can be comfortably viewed from the glass parapet in the entrance area, and better still from the seven variably retractable stands. The hall owes its wonderful glare-free light from the ceiling designed like an oversize egg box consisting of 56 light funnels in four offset variants. When the competition for the construction of the new secondary school for the Austrian communities of Klaus, Weiler and Fraxern was announced, a sports hall was also part of the envisaged complex. The school was built and occupied in 2003, while the sports hall had to wait another eleven years. Since
2014, the school and its sports hall have formed a stylistically uniform unit, with only the poetic greying of the school’s wooden façade standing out as a sign of its ten years of weathering. The entire building envelope has an exterior cladding of silver fir. The façade fully closed towards the road is covered with slender vertical slats and delightfully geometrically structured with aluminium strips. By comparison, a “curtain” of wooden louvres hangs from the north façade. At ground-floor level, a gigantic horizontal shop window has been carved into the entrance façade, while the façade opposite opens at first-floor level with glazed doors. www.dietrich.untertrifaller.com

Close to nature
Sports hall in Karlsruhe This new triple-section sports hall for the Institute of Sports Sciences is located in the woods on the southern campus of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Legal considerations regarding nature conservation were therefore of major importance for the designers at SEHW. The outcome is a compact, energy-optimised building that minimises its impact on the natural environment. The building has been lowered by a metre into the ground in order to reduce its monumentality and do justice to the demand to preserve existing trees. The dark, rhythmic timber cladding of the façade contrasts with the spacious openings resembling clearances in the shady forest. These elements of the hall have been glazed with slightly reflective glass so that the surrounding forest is reflected in the façade. This way the building is camouflaged during the day and glows mysteriously through the trees at night. The interior design, on the other hand, contrasts with bright colour accents in yellow and grey-green to the concrete surfaces. Interesting views have been carefully orchestrated with the aid of voids between the levels, thus connecting the entrance and sports areas with the administrative wing. The interior rooms thus merge into one another and, thanks to large-area glazing, with the building’s surroundings. Powered sunshade systems on the west and south façades protect the hall and lounges in the ancillary wing from sunlight. The strategy permits daylight illumination in summer while preventing overheating during the summer months but makes use of solar warmth in the winter. The system is monitored by a central control unit. www.sehw.de

Calm haven
Sports Centre Micheline Ostermeyer, Paris The municipality of Paris has built a bold and commendable sports centre in an area well off the capital’s usual architectural path. Besides a large sports hall, it also includes a martial arts studio and a dancing centre, a concert hall, educational facilities and a youth centre. All of these new offerings have resulted from the restoration and conversion of industrial buildings from the 1920s. The new 4,060m² sports centre forms part of the ZAC Pajol master plan for a disused railway brownfield site in the 18th arrondissement.
Affordable Pool Programming: Submersible SwimWall
A no-frills approach was taken to designing the form of the building, which is situated between a new urban square and an expansive railway landscape affording far-reaching views. The building is arranged over three levels. The lower ground and upper levels cannot be seen into from outside and sandwich a transparent public area at entry level. The lower ground level accommodates the martial arts and dancing centres. The 48 by 28 metre sports hall is located on the upper level to take advantage of natural daylighting via a series of north-facing sculpted skylights. On the entry level, the building opens onto a large terrace along the eastern façade. The centre minimises its energy use by using natural daylight and ventilation and photovoltaic panels, while many renewable materials have been incorporated into its design. The main sports hall is entirely clad in wood; its acoustical treatment and soft colours provide a calm haven from rundown aspects of the surrounding neighbourhood. A reflective metallic surface enlivens the opaque façade, while the entire ground floor is glazed, inside and out. www.brisacgonzalez.com

Raising up Derby Arena
In 2010 Derby City Council announced an ambitious £50 million leisure strategy, including plans for a substantial upgrade of the city’s leisure facilities. Ultimately, the aim of the initiative was to increase participation in sport and secure Derby the title of “the most active city in England”. A key part of this strategy was to create an indoor sports hub which included an indoor 250m cycle track. This flagship venue would aim to inspire participation in cycling, whilst also providing a wide range of community sport and leisure facilities to meet the needs of local residents.
FaulknerBrowns Architects was chosen to turn this vision into a reality and the plans for Derby Arena were formed. Given the modest size of the budget available for the project (£24 million) and the scale of the facility required to meet the Council’s objectives, providing value for money was a key consideration for the design team. Traditionally, facilities for cycling have been inward facing and the amount of users able to utilise the facility at any one time has been low in relation to the sb 1/2016
size of the building. Dedicated velodromes specifically have tried with varying degrees of success to address this by finding uses for the vast infield space cut adrift by the large, banked cycling track. Where the infield has found other uses, access to and from the space has been an issue, with a complex arrangement of ramps and tunnels. For Derby Arena, FaulknerBrowns adopted an innovative approach, raising the cycle track upwards to first floor level. Not only did this allow unimpeded access to the central infield from ground level, but it vastly improved visibilsb 1/2016
ity of the infield space to visitors and allowed the entire 3,000 m² of space to be utilised without compromising cycling activities. Within the infield, enough space was created to accommodate a sports hall space large enough for 12 badminton courts, or a combination of badminton, netball, volleyball, martial arts and table tennis. In addition, the infield was now suitable to host a diverse range of cultural events for up to 5,000 spectators, utilising the 1,500 seat grandstand and 3,500 standing in the infield. This would open up the facility to an even broader section of the local community and provide a more varied entertainment offering. 17
PROJECTS
The additional revenue streams generated by the sports hall and staged events help in ensuring long term sustainability of the venue. Since the opening of Derby Arena, the infield has accommodated a pantomime production of Alladin, a graduation ceremony for students of Derby University, national boxing and cycling events, National Badminton League (NBL) matches, as well as various musical performances and sport participation events.
Due to the limited site area available for the arena is was important to employ a design philosophy which made best use of all the available space around the cycle track to minimise the building’s footprint. All of the necessary support facilities were tightly shrink-wrapped around the cycle track with the café foyer, fitness suite and function rooms on one side and the grandstand opposite. The 2,000 m² of space below the cycle track was also fully utilised for changing facilities, toilets and storage.

The aluminium cladding which wraps the building exterior in a ribbon form is anodised in gold, silver and bronze to represent sporting success. The appearance of the building is ever-changing as it is viewed from different perspectives, providing a sense of movement which echoes the activities being undertaken within. Dramatic eye-lid windows provide light and visibility to the track and fitness suite, providing dynamism and character to the building appearance.
A combination of all these different elements has created a multi-purpose sporting arena which truly serves its community and encourages active involvement from people of all ages, abilities and interests. The innovative design provides a flexible and sustainable venue that will serve Derby for many years to come. Three questions to the
architect
Michael Hall FaulknerBrowns 20
Which theme will dominate sports architecture in the near future? Nations that harbour Olympic ambitions will continue in the pursuit of gold medals and a post-games legacy which encourages increased participation in sport, particularly in younger generations. However, many nations are beginning to consider a more holistic view of the role sport can play in enhancing public wellbeing, with a stronger emphasis on social outputs. This will shift the emphasis to the design of flexible, multiuse sport and leisure facilities, which
are able to achieve a wide range of social objectives whilst still nurturing the next generation of sporting talent.
Which is your favourite sports facility? And why? Research is an important part of sports design, and travel to see other architects’ work is an important part of that process. One of my recent discoveries is the Azkuna Zentroa in Bilbao by Philippe Starck. Previously a 1900’s wine warehouse, the building has been cleverly converted into a roof top aquatics centre, combining sb 1/2016

high-quality swimming facilities with cultural attractions and other leisure provisions, including a cinema, gym and restaurants. The roof top swimming pool is in contrast to more conventional approaches to pool design, however, its tight city centre location makes it a perfect location for tourists, casual users and serious swimmers to all make use of the provisions. Sitting amidst the picturesque roof tops, the leisure waters and the outdoor bathing terrace are the perfect setting for relaxation, whilst the more traditional lane pools make an ideal training location for the competitive swimmer. sb 1/2016
Which is your favourite sport and favourite club? What does this sport mean to you as an architect? I tend to enjoy sports and activities which provide access to amazing outdoor environments, in particular cycling, kayaking, skiing and most recently kite surfing. I have been lucky enough to have worked on a number of projects which have aimed to increase accessibility to these activities including cycling velodromes (most recently Derby Arena), Lee Valley White Water Centre and several indoor snow slopes (most recently Chill
Factore in Manchester). Much of our architectural work aims to provide people from all backgrounds greater access to facilities which promote a healthier, more active lifestyle. Derby Arena is a case in point where indoor cycling takes place alongside a host of easily accessible court sports.

The facility was commissioned in May 2014. TAURON Polska Energia S.A. has been the facility’s naming rights sponsor since February 2015. TAURON Arena Krakow is a complex comprising two halls: a large hall, and a smaller hall referred to as the training hall. The main hall is a huge arena with
an area of 4,500 m²; the entire facility takes up over 61,000 m². It offers three levels for the audience, including seats and standing spaces on the standing floor. The facility can accommodate more than 21,000 people, including 15,000 sitting in the stands. The audience area can be configured as needed. Moreover, the Arena provides convenient b ackstage facilities for athletes and artists and boasts multimedia and stage systems and good acoustics. Thanks to the above, the facility can host all types of events. sb 1/2016
The main arena is complemented by the small hall with a standing area of over 1,700 m² and more than 300 seats. During large-scale events, it can serve as a training hall or a rehearsal venue for performers. It is also a perfect room for holding smaller events. The TAURON Arena Krakow is controlled via modern management systems which ensure the comfort of event participants by maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity levels inside the hall. Thanks to isolation panels and an interchangeable surface, the arena can be transformed within a few hours into a venue for any kind of indoor contest. sb 1/2016
TAURON Arena Krakow is a great venue for hosting sports events. The EURO 2016 European Men’s Handball Championship was held there between 15-31 January. The preliminary, main and final round matches took place here. The arena can also accommodate concerts, exhibitions, congresses and trade fairs. It can also be used as a television filming location, for producing advertisements or for great performances with the participation of thousands of spectators. The entire facility and the area around it are designed for disability access.

Various customer needs have been taken into consideration. There are conference rooms, restaurants, bars and more than 1,300 parking spaces – these are backstage facilities worthy of any prestigious artistic or business event. An exclusive VIP section can accommodate 500 people in separated sectors and comfortable galleries. There is also a restaurant and two conference rooms on the same level. The rooms have all the equipment required for conferences, training sessions and lectures, as well as a catering facility. The largest European media façade screen with more than 5,000 m² LED surface and live video display capability is a truly state-of-the-art solution provided by ColosseoEAS. With a design to provide a flowing

and endless display of pictures, videos and statistics from the events happening inside TAURON Krakow Arena in mind, the biggest technical challenge was how to place such a huge screen on the façade and give it a fluid and esthetically pleasing appearance. ColosseoEAS, a global leader in media control systems, ultralight fully aluminum structured centre-hung video boards, LED façades and advanced biometric security, designed the revolutionary solution that remained faithful to the designers’ original intent. ColosseoEAS suggested replacing the steel cover with an aluminum latticework, saving weight and infrastructure wear and tear while maintaining the dominant circular architectural element and letting light

into the interior windows, which created a brighter feel for the interior. Krakow’s designers were delighted by ColosseoEAS structural and LED solution. In addition, the industry-leading Colosseo Single Media Platform enabled seamless integration of all venue media. The game presentation and media operating director was given synchronous control over content on any medium at any time. The ColosseoEAS media platform redefines industry expectations for the next generation level of fan engagement, interactivity and infotainment. Installation began in February 2014 with more than 80 technicians from ColosseoEAS installing 80 tonnes of aluminum latticework and attaching 5,100 m² of
sb 1/2016
LED screen with 80,000 screws, creating the largest media façade in Europe in the process. ColosseoEAS also increased the LED density above the arena‘s main entrance, creating a 540 m² high resolution screen which is the largest of Poland. Since officially opening in May 2014, the arena has received exceptionally positive fan feedback and hosted many major events like the FIVB Men’s World Championship in Volleyball, FED Cup by BNP Paribas, EHF European Men‘s Handball Championship and concerts with the likes of Elton John, Bryan Adams and Robbie Williams.

Three questions to the
operator Malgorzata Marcinska
Municipal Development Agency President
What are the structural or functional features that make your facility successful? First of all, the venue’s capacity (22,000 people) makes it multifunctional. The TAURON Arena Krakow can accommodate events such as World Championships in 18 different categories (e.g. volleyball, basketball, hockey, handball, tennis, martial arts); concerts, shows and performances; conventions, conferences, trade fairs, exhibitions, business events and meetings; and can also be used as a set for TV, film and advertising productions. Another important feature is its functionality – event organisers can freely configure the auditorium as they wish (there are over 15,000 seats, with one quarter of 1 these being mobile; the arena’s court can accommodate 9,300
people). They also have convenient support facilities at their disposal (training hall, cloakrooms, wardrobes, catering and conference rooms), while huge lorries carrying the equipment needed to prepare events can drive right onto the arena’s court. You do not need to worry about the ice rink as there is a special freezing system under the court. The venue is fully adapted to the needs of people with a disability.
If you had an extra wish, how would you modify or extend your facility? The TAURON Arena Krakow is a new venue (not even two years old). It is the largest in Poland and one of the biggest sports and entertainment venues in Europe. Its technical solutions and systems
are among the best and most modern in the world. We have no need of such a wish at the moment, let’s park it for the future.
What are the challenges facing the operation of sports and leisure facilities in the near future? The function of venues such as the TAURON Arena Krakow is going to change or is changing at the moment. It is not only about organising huge sport events such as European or World Championships or the concerts of mega music stars. Increasingly, music festivals are moving to halls, companies are organising private events and parties and arenas are also taking on the role of trade fair and conference centres. We are also seeing the development

and expansion of fields only tentatively associated with sport, such as online gaming, which can attract several thousand spectators live and millions via streaming. Events are not simply taking place within a venue, but also in the immediate surroundings. Very often, they not only involve the people coming to the particular event, but also local citizens, and are directed towards them. There are no limits to organisers’ imagination when looking for venues that best meet their expectations. Multifunctional arenas with proper, modern infrastructure and technical facilities have an advantage. The TAURON Arena Krakow is such a place.

Three questions to the
architects
Marcin Kulpa Piotr Labowicz Perbo-Projekt
Which theme will dominate sports architecture in the near future? We believe entertainment will dominate, the commercial function with the sport function accompanying it, going hand-inhand with considerable development of the supporting infrastructure (sports hospitality, digital signage, parking and communications). The number of monofunctional facilities will decrease. Which is your favourite sports facility? And why? The Allianz Arena in Munich is our favourite. We like its shape, but above all its great qualities of visibility, communication and security. We also like its pageantry
and atmosphere and believe much, if not most, of its impact comes from the architecture of the building.
Which is your favourite sport and favourite club? What does this sport mean to you as an architect? Our favourite sports are skiing and skateboarding. To us, these represent the essence of sport direct contact with nature and all it has to offer, being in the here and now. Many of our projects are in mountainous regions. And our favourite club is FC Barcelona.

Amongst the trees Abbotsleigh sports hall
Abbotsleigh is a private day and boarding school based in Wahroonga, a suburb 25 kilometres north of Sydney. The senior and junior campuses cater for 1,300 students in total from transition to year 12. Each campus has a rich history as well as state of the art facilities that provide students with the best possible educational opportunities. The Senior Campus incorporates a number of facilities including a 350-seat auditorium, large assembly hall, Senior Studies Centre, Aquatic Centre and two gymnasiums.
In 2010 AJ+C were commissioned to prepare a master plan for Abbotsleigh’s senior school campus. Within this framework sports, cultural, education and boarding precincts were identified and defined. The sports and assembly hall has been designed as a building in the landscape sited amongst the trees. Its location adjacent to the suspended oval sports field and Aquatic Centre consolidates the sporting precinct. An innovative and contemporary design has sb 1/2016
been developed which whilst being visually interesting in terms of its building form is sited sympathetically within the trees, and utilizes the existing topography to minimize the overall scale of the building.
a sporting facility. The apparently simple curved form – a single, large-scale 56 metre long internal space without pillars, with an internal height of eleven metres – provides maximum space and volume for the intended use, a sports facility and meeting space.
The southern façade has a sinuous curved profile expressing a dialogue with the site’s large blue gum tree structures. These curves create a seamless transition into an extended roofline cantilevering beyond the actual building envelope itself providing cover to a grandstand below. The result is a visually interesting profile conveying a sense of energy and movement appropriate to the building’s use of
The building form acknowledges the thermodynamic building modelling used to enhance the environmentally sustainable principles of the design and programme. Internal cladding in spotted gum (a native Australian hardwood timber) provides texture and allows the building’s façades to respond to changing sun and weather conditions, and to capture breezes for cross ventilation.

Three questions to the
architect
Michael Heenan Allen Jack+Cottier 30
Which theme will dominate sports architecture in the near future? As well as the elite and high achieving focus of sports stadiums these days we feel that the dominant element in sport will be participation and appreciation of sports at all levels no matter what the mental or physical capabilities of the participants. This will also be achieved with the help of the growing eSports world. This refocus of facilities on participation and fun means that buildings will have a lighter more exuberant and connected to nature focus.
Which is your favourite sports facility? And why? I like MVRDV’s Amsterdam tennis club because it takes an exuberant and fun approach to using the roof of the facilities as a stadium. This is a modest local club that makes the participation even as a spectator fun. I also like our Milson Island indoor sports stadium. The entire shape of the building is an overt and direct expression of its thermodynamic performance and the participants are totally connected with nature.
Which is your favourite sport and favourite club? What does this sport mean to you as an architect? My favourite sport at the moment is sailing. And my favourite club is the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. I just finished participating in the 2015 Sydney to Hobart yacht race, a 630 mile yacht race in the toughest conditions in the world. Sailing is based on the very highest and latest technology in the very lowest use of energy. By its very definition it relies on the wind for power. When you are out on the course the only important thing is the direction and strength of the next breeze and the shape of the next wave. It focuses the mind on the very elemental nature of the sport. sb 1/2016

The lower parts of the north and south elevations are in parts glazed in louvers to merge and connect the building and its occupants with the landscape. The entire hall is naturally ventilated through automated wind sensor controls. Whilst the building’s functional requirement as a sports centre requires a large volume (netball, basketball, badminton and indoor tennis sports) all façades have been broken down in scale by louvers, louvred screens and timber panelling, to make them “kid size” when viewed from the ground up.
Three questions to the
industry
Colin Beattie Supawood 32
How did you get to working on Abbotsleigh sports hall? Supawood have supplied products to several award winning projects with AJ+C over the years, including Berry Sport Hall and the Milson Island Recreation Centre. Abbotsleigh is conceptually very similar to the solution we created for them on Milson Island, just on a much larger scale, and at a much lower cost per square metre. The global financial crisis budgets have been lower and we expect that to be a permanent change. We’ve really enjoyed collaborating with AJ+C as they produce great designs and aren’t afraid of setting us challenging linings requirements.
The materials and finishes have been selected to harmonise with the surrounding eucalyptus/bushland palette, ensuring a relationship with the ever changing colours of the trunks, branches and leaves. Soffits and ceiling linings under the large roof overhangs are lined in plywood, allowing the building and its materials to extend and merge into the landscape around the tree canopies. The dark grey metal roofs, lightweight fibre cement, spotted gum timber clad walls and louvred screens complement the neighbouring Aquatic Centre.
Which are the main advantages and features about your curved panels regarding Abbotsleigh sports hall? Reverberation control is critical in large spaces, especially where there will be a lot of school children! The panels we supply include a pre-bonded acoustic textile which ensures that the acoustic performance is assured and not reliant on the installation of additional items by the installer. Supawood are able to customise our acoustic panel linings to flow with and enhance the curvaceous linings of the architects design.
How do you ensure that the curved linings are so smooth and without any kinking? The panelling is all prototyped and tested in the factory before production commences to ensure that installation goes smoothly. The secret to a kink-free curve is the location of the fixings and framing. We provide all this knowledge to the installers so that we can ensure the result is exactly what the architect intended. In this case we also put forward a recommended installer who had a lot of experience in our systems and is good on detail, Auzoom Plaster Lining. They were able to install large quantities of panels very fast to meet the tight deadline due to a contracted programme caused by unexpected delays in earthworks. sb 1/2016

Accessible
Musholm in Denmark Musholm’s Recreational Centre is owned by The Danish Foundation for Muscular Dystrophy, and a major part of the customers using the facility for vacations etc. are people with various physical disabilities and their relatives. Musholm is located on the Danish coastline and pushes the potential of accessible architecture. In fact, it is recognized as one of the world‘s most accessible sports and holiday resorts for people with a disability. In order to provide more activity offers for these guests and to engage deeper in conference venues, the foundation decided to invest in a large indoor multifunctional space. The new multi-purpose
sports hall designed by the architectural offices AART and Keingart in collaboration with D&N engineers and BSAA landscape architects was appointed winner of an architectural competition. The expansion of Musholm is divided into two sections in the form of a new multi-purpose sports hall and a number of new holiday flats. The multi-purpose sports hall is located at the heart of the resort, while the flats are located in its periphery. The multi-purpose sports hall includes an activity ramp which provides visitors, whether they are disabled or not, the opportunity to challenge themselves sb 1/2016
physically, offering a wide range of platforms and activity spots, including a climbing wall for wheelchair users. Based on close dialogue with current and future users, the ramp winds its way around the hall, offering a wealth of activity zones and culminating in a viewing room from where Musholm’s location overlooking the sea and scenic landscape is revealed. Keingart has had a special focus on designing space and devices for atypical activities on the ramp and in the connected areas. The ramp itself offers two competitors a possibility of a 100-metre wheelchair race either uphill or downhill. A number of curtain rails are laid across the ceiling over the ramp, and suspended lightweight poles can be drawn out, transforming the ramp into a slalom track. sb 1/2016
Starting from the bottom of the ramp, the first level gives access to a removable stage. From here two steep ramps enable wheelchair users to experience fast acceleration down to the sports floor where they have lots of space to decelerate slowly. The next level services is the so-called transformation space. This room can be opened completely to the hall, functioning as a spectator balcony. When closed off, it can be transformed into a gaming centre, a cinema, a discotheque and an obstacle labyrinth. Numerous cranes in the ceiling make it possible to hoist down i.e. soft objects that can be obstacles in a tag game for wheelchair users. On the following level a three-dimensional playing zone for smaller kids is established. It is a combination of nets in three levels that children can 35
PROJECTS
crawl in, and they can slide down a fireman´s pole into a pool of soft balls. The fourth level is a balcony from where the more daring people can let themselves drop into a very thick and soft mattress placed on the sports floor 3 metres below. The fifth level is the starting platform for the aerial cableway that runs across the hall ending on the third level. By using different types of strap suspensions and canvasses it is possible for almost everybody to find support for a thrilling experience. The various activities triggered by gravity that are connected to the ramp, are supplemented by the vertical climbing wall in the sports hall. Climbers can choose climbing routes of increasing levels of diffi36
culty here and a special manlift enables people with physical disabilities to climb although possessing very little muscular power. Designed as circular buildings, the sports hall as well as the holiday homes adapt to the landscape and existing buildings and at the same time, the circular gesture provides shelter in the open landscape and accentuates a sense of community. The interaction with the scenic surroundings is underlined by the consistent use of wood. For instance, the façades on the hall and holiday homes are covered with larch wood, while the floors, walls and ceiling in the hall are covered with ash wood. sb 1/2016
In this project the architects tried to push the limits for the kind of activities people with various handicaps can engage in. The opportunity to design the whole building with disabled people as the central user group has turned the situation upside down. This is a building for the disabled but it works just as well for the average citizen. Together the two groups can engage in activities parallel to each other and have a common experience of competing and overcoming challenges. Based on the sports hall’s many activities, the expansion fortifies Musholm as a place that sets new standards for accessible architecture and invites people with a disability to play, participate sb 1/2016
and create new friendships. In this way, the expansion not only carries on the resort’s architectural quality and atmosphere. It also raises the bar for accessible architecture by providing all visitors the opportunity to enjoy an active and physically challenging holiday. Thus, the expansion sets new standards for how accessible design can be implemented into architecture and how architecture can be infused with a distinctive sensuality in order to create a comfortable and engaging environment.

Three questions to the
operator Henrik Ib Jørgensen
Director Muskelsvindfonden
What are the structural or functional features that make your facility successful? Our facility’s most important feature is without doubt the multipurpose arena because it can be used for all kinds of parasports but also boasts a beautiful interior and acoustic design, making it a fantastic conference and music venue.
If you had an extra wish, how would you modify or extend your facility? Actually, I do not have any regrets. I would not want to change a single brick or strip of wood in the entire building. It is simply fantastic!
What are the challenges facing the operation of sports and leisure facilities in the near future? I can primarily speak for facilities aimed at people with disabilities and I think we have some special challenges. First of all, parasport athletes do not have sponsors or financial support at a high level. Holiday guests with disabilities do not generally have the same income as the average population. And as conference customers, disability organisations cannot compare with the likes of the private business community, for example. Secondly, our operational and maintenance costs are a bit higher than in the standard hotel and leisure business because
the equipment we need in dressing rooms and bathrooms is much more expensive and technologically advanced. Our biggest challenge in the near future is to prove that we can succeed with our business model under these conditions and at the same time fulfil our mission of making a significant difference to the lives of people with disabilities. That is social enterprise in its purest form.

Three questions to the
architect
Flemming Anders Overgaard
Which theme will dominate sports architecture in the near future? We will have to create more inviting facilities that inspire people to experience the joy of movement almost without thinking about it. The principles of active living should become as important an ingredient in the design of new facilities and cityscapes as the principles of accessibility have become over the last years. The Musholm facility shows that there is not necessarily a contradiction between the accessible path and the challenging path.
Which is your favourite sports facility? And why? One of my favourite sports facil ities is the athletic track outside of Olot in Catalonia, Spain designed by RCR Architects. It is placed in the middle of a forest and offers a perfect sensation of being immersed in nature and at the same time being able to take advantage of the classical track-and-field facility.
Which is your favourite sport and favourite club? What does this sport mean to you as an architect? Apart from mountain biking, that personally gives me some of the best motoric thrills, I really like football. My favourite Âinternational club is FC Barcelona. Football is a simple and intriguing game that can be played everywhere very spontaneously. As an architect it reminds me that it is not the size or complexity of a facility that matters, but if it inspires people to get engaged or not.

As a wooden corpus with a polygonal shape, the hall blends harmoniously into the existing building complex and, together with the adjacently created school garden, forms the final element in the overall ensemble of the school site on the edge of Grunewald. The building stands a little set back from the edge of a roughly 5m deep hollow in the terrain in the middle of the school site. Making use of the existing topography of the slope dotted with trees, the hall in the north
The roof and façade merge to create a wooden sculpture that arches over the playing area like a protective hood. The proportion of glazing in the façade increases towards the south and thus makes an inviting gesture to the school yard. The many and varied structural and technical elements in this hood are united on the inside by the uniform green colour scheme. Beneath the hood, the hall level extends as a wooden “trough” that carry the athletes or, during cultural events, sb 1/2016
the visitors and musicians. Between the trough and the hood extends the concrete gallery. From this gallery, there are diverse and surprising views of the hall and, via the spacious glazing, of the surrounding school grounds and the barbecue area. The two levels of the building are accessed at ground level, but at different heights. At hall level is the main entrance with the access to the foyer and changing rooms. At road level, spectators access the gallery enclosing the playing area on three sides. While the hall’s polygonal volume grows out of the terrain, the changing and ancillary rooms burrow into the slope. sb 1/2016
The large interior only becomes fully visible to the observer on entering the building. The warm wood surfaces and harmonious colours generate a pleasant atmosphere. This is where school concerts, choir performances and lectures take place as well as games lessons and sporting competition. The school community also uses the hall for large gatherings at the beginning and end of the school year with up to 1,100 spectators for whom a wooden stand can be withdrawn from the gallery level. With its orientation towards the surrounding grounds, the hall is also ideally suited for social gatherings in the summer. Protected by the projecting roof, the forecourt with its dynamic climbing wall can also be used as a stage. 41

Rudolf Steiner Schule Managing Director sb 1/2016
What are the structural or functional features that make your facility successful? The sloping topography, which is unusual for Berlin, enabled us to push a large part of the building’s volume into the ground. The building corpus thus blends discreetly into the terrain and screens off the school garden behind it from the busy Clayallee. At the same time, the tall glass south façade forms the northern perimeter of a large garden courtyard. onto the playing surface. This is a wonderful solution as it overcomes the demarcation between the playing surface and gallery and because we can have banked seating right down to the area for the school orchestra.
If you had an extra wish, how would you modify or extend your facility? We had to compromise with the acoustics because games lessons need sound absorption and music-making benefits from more reverberation. To get around this compromise, I would have liked to have an adjustable ceiling lin-
ing that shows its absorbent side during games and its reflective side during music. Admittedly, this is a pretty extravagant wish.
What are the challenges facing the operation of sports and leisure facilities in the near future? Standards and usage directives (e.g. for games and music) are an increasing challenge for multifunctional facilities.

Minka Kersten Andreas Kopp Kersten + Kopp Architekten
sb 1/2016
Which theme will dominate sports architecture in the near future? Current forward-looking themes include the development of temporary structures for major sports events which are subsequently put to sustainable long-term use or removed entirely. Another exciting task is the development of sports landscapes that integrate other leisure amenities in innercity areas. Multifunctional facilities are becoming more and more important in this connection. Our youth centre in Hamburg (Haus der Jugend, sb 1/2011) was a step in this direction where the building offering sports opportunities indoors and outdoors has been developed into an item of sports equipment. The Rudolf Steiner School in Berlin also adopts this logic with its parallel and serial usage.
11 13 3 5 5
Which is your favourite sports facility? And why? We would like to mention several: a few Olympic buildings in Barcelona like the archery range by Enric Miralles in the Val d’Hebron or the magnificent swimming pool on Montjuic with the whole city spread out beneath it. Also worth mentioning is the little Basket Bar by NL Architects in Utrecht that places a basketball court on top of a bar to save space. And naturally the still unique Olympic Park in Munich by Gßnter Behnisch, the prototype of a sports landscape par excellence.
Which is your favourite sport and favourite club? What does this sport mean to you as an architect? We like running, free-style. Our sports facilities are changing landscapes: Grunewald, Ostprignitz, Cape Arkona on RĂźgen. For competitive running, these are joined by urban landscapes: the inner cities of Berlin, Stockholm or, for example, the Avenida de Boavista and the Atlantic coast in Porto, etc. Fantastic. You can gather unforgettable impressions of rural and urban panoramas as well as countless details that you would never have discovered otherwise.

The new sports hall of Gymnasium Cotta (secondary school) is Dresden’s largest school sports hall. It contains a partitionable triple-section hall with a 45 x 27 m playing surface and 7 m headroom plus a separate gymnastics hall with a 15 x 27 m playing surface and 5.5 m headroom. The hall is part of the building complex listed as a monument. The dominant design element of the new building is its corpus into whose plain block the sports surfaces have been inserted. Its sole extension is located on the east side. Along its long side, the triple-section hall opens flush-level onto the school yard. Parts have been glazed to enable visual relations between the sports hall and school yard. The façade of the hall corpus stresses the strategy of the placid, reduced, large form, with its upper section being faced with horizontally articulated panel cladding (fibrous cement panels in graded colours). ing plinth zone consists alternately of glass and vertically structured rendered surfaces. For functional reasons and to improve the load-bearing structure, the glazing near the impact-resistant wall has been kept to a minimum and grouped in combination with the emergency exit doors. Straightforward layouts with clearly defined room assignments keep walking distances to a minimum and provide good orientation in the building’s interior. The decision in favour of a hipped roof gently pitched to all four sides supports the clarity of the building corpus evident from the ground plan. By organising drainage on the outside and omitting an attic, the building has the same reduced height on all sides. The load-bearing structure is made of reinforced concrete, partly cast-in-place and partly semi-precast. The roof is carried support-free by 32 m long glued-laminated trusses traversing the hall. The roof supporting shell consists of box-shaped cross laminated timber elements (make: Lignotrend). sb 1/2016
The materials of the large sports hall consist of the wooden impact wall and the fair-face concrete surfaces of the walls above. Between them lies the sports flooring, whose colour effect has been achieved with a uniform PU coating without marbling. The sports hall’s interior is dominated by the white-stained gluedlaminated trusses and the spacious strips of skylights whose special glazing provides virtually glare-free and uniform illumination of the room. The knot-free wood surface of the cross laminated timber ceiling matches the colours of the impact walls. The plain knotless silver fir finish of the large format roof elements (up to 2.5 m x 18 m) is already created in production. This accelerated the completion of the hall interior as subsequent work on suspended ceilings was rendered superfluous.
mented by the acoustic effect of the solid timber elements achieved with integrated wood fibre absorbers. The latter are indispensable for reducing reverberation in the voluminous hall and to reduce the noise level arising during use. Without absorbers, peak values of 80 dB and more would be reached during school games – values for which ear protection has to be made available under health & safety law. Both the glued-laminated timber elements and acoustic absorbers meet high green building standards. Their natureplus certificate verifies their compliance with guidelines far exceeding the current provisions of the law.
Used as the hall roof, the LIGNO Acoustic Q3 classic elements perform several tasks in one. Their load-bearing function as slabs and stiffening panels is supplesb 1/2016

European Handball Championship 2016
Enthusiastic private swimming fans
With the sporting year barely into its stride, this is THE sensation: The German national handball team delivers an outstanding performance to become the European Champion! As the official partner of the European Handball Championship 2016, Gerflor, in a manner of speaking, laid the ground for the title. Like many other major sporting events, this tournament was held entirely on Taraflex® Sport M Evolution, the world’s leading indoor sports flooring from Gerflor.
The longstanding Austrian company Berndorf Bäderbau has once again lived up to its role as a pioneer. In the private pool sector, it is now exploring new avenues – avenues that are already familiar to many clients in the automotive industry. “By introducing our ‘classic line’ pools, we wish to boost our business with private customers all over Europe. We have already received our initial positive response, and the first classic pools have been sold,” says a proud Roland Tatzreiter, head of the Private Pools Business Unit. Berndorf Bäderbau’s success rests on several different business activities. Private Pools is one of them and is achieving great results thanks to their high quality.
Taraflex Sport M Evolution has special properties designed for outstanding performance, comfort and safety, making it the ideal solution for medallists and professional athletes as well as for school and leisure sport. With optimised point elasticity, this sophisticated sports floor is a safe option particularly for children. Its shock absorption fulfills all EN and DIN requirements. It also features easy cleaning and ultra-low maintenance thanks to Protecsol® surface treatment. Protecsol® significantly reduces the risk of friction burns. Every day six million people enjoy the benefits of Taraflex® sports flooring. Over 40 million square metres have been installed in more than 70,000 sports halls around the world.
The new ‘classic line’ features excellent value for money and is the entry level product for the exclusive world of stainless steel swimming pools. In this respect, Berndorf Bäderbau appeals to a large customer segment. With this sophisticated and modular design line, customers can enjoy a daily summer holiday at home before the swimming season gets underway. The company’s expertise and rapid construction will enable you to enjoy a special swimming experience before the coming summer is out. In addition, you boost the value of your property in the long term and enjoy an exclusive life-style. “With our classic pools, the customer has a choice between two fixed sizes, 6 x 3 m and 8 x 4 m, with the HARMONIA model as the skimmer pool and KORNOS as the overflow channel pool. As in the automotive industry, there are various lines of standard and optional equipment that the customer can combine to suit his taste,” says Tatzreiter explaining the principle behind the classic pools. With minor modifications, the classic pools are also very suitable for upgrading hotel spa facilities. The fascinating variety of combinable pool features leave nothing to be desired for hotel guests.

Bethel Children and Youth Hospice
Polytan will be in on the action when the world‘s top athletes pit their strengths against each other at international level this summer. The turf used for the hockey matches in Rio comes from Polytan, as was the case in London and Beijing too. Blue and green versions of the new Poligras Platinum CoolPlus synthetic turf system are being installed. The very same hockey pitch has also been available to the British hockey squads at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre since last October. The professional athletes are thus ideally equipped to prepare for the Summer Games.
Melos GmbH can look back on a positive business year and has not forgotten its social responsibility. This year, the company is supporting the Bethel Children and Youth Hospice. Since 2012, the Bethel Children and Youth Hospice has been offering rooms for ten children suffering from terminal illnesses. However, it is more than just a place of dying or saying final goodbyes. The motto of the hospice is “assisted dying means assisted living”, meaning it is rather a place for dying where children can spend time with their families. On their most difficult paths, many children and young adults come to the hospice several times.
The pitch comes in an eye-catching colour combination: a blue playing field with a light green border. A higher stitch density and special texturing technology mean that even more accurate moves are possible when playing on Poligras Platinum CoolPlus.
The Children and Youth Hospice enables children to learn how to deal with their situation in their own way: by making advisory services available, for example. The families can stay in Bethel together and can gain relief from the home care situation. The Christmas holidays enable families to spend special moments together at the hospice. During these days, the hospice becomes a meeting place for sick children and their parents. In this community, the Christmas season is spent together so that they can provide one another with good cheer and support. They take this opportunity to remember those who are no longer with them.
Kevin Burton, Head of National Centres, Sport England, explains: ”In order to ensure our Great British hockey players had the best possible chance of success in future sports competitions, Sport England took the decision to replace the hockey surface at Bisham Abbey with the exact same surface that will be installed for the international sports competition in summer 2016. The process from our first contact with Polytan, working through the delivery of the project, to the handover was incredibly efficient and caused minimal disruption to ongoing operations. It helped enormously only having to deal with one company, as Polytan not only manufacture the carpet, but undertook the installation as well. The feedback from our hockey players and travelling international camps has been overwhelming. We are delighted with the surface as well as Polytan’s first-class service.“
Polytan GmbH www.polytan.de sb 1/2016
Beginning with the initial idea for the construction of the institution, Melos GmbH has been supporting the children’s hospice right from the initial idea to establish the institution. As a sponsor of the charity event “Klosterpforten Cup”, Melos assisted from 2009 to 2011 during the institution’s first years. “In the Bethel Children and Youth Hospice, we know that our donation is in good hands,” explains Sven Prause, among other things responsible for Corporate Social Responsibility at Melos GmbH. Therefore Melos has again decided to forego a Christmas or New Year’s campaign and instead to donate €2,500. The feedback from business partners was very positive.
