Editorial

DEAR IAKS MEMBERS AND SB READERS, Innovation calls for curiosity, creativity and a passion for the new. In the special case of sport, innovation is strongly affected by contemporary sports trends that manifest themselves in new expectations of the infrastructure of future sports facilities. A new sports complex must therefore have a highly flexible design in order to respond to these new trends. It can then be a lively location in the long term and a positive investment in the future. Yet it is not only the inner heart of the arena with its convertible playing and event area, but also the designed surroundings that have to provide space and development opportunities for a huge diversity of events. The best example of this is the Olympic Park in Munich with its Olympic Hall. Both have such an open infrastructure that the acceptance of this location for public and sports events dating back to 1972 has remained unbroken to the present day. This applies particularly to the many young sports that have repeatedly conquered the magnificent space around and within the sports facilities. This extremely sustainable usage strategy was innovative 40 years ago and is considered a precursor of many subsequent multifunctional sports buildings all over the world. In addition to the designed environment and flexibility, the integration of arenas in the urban context is also an important aspect for the vitality of a facility. This is supplemented in the best case with additional programme elements that communicate with the urban setting. This is not in itself innovative, since even the classical Roman arenas embraced this idea with their integration in the agora and its arcades.

Netherlands have had to get together in sharing the Varkenoord clubhouse. As a result of its positioning along the pitches for football and hockey, both sides of the pitched roof have become stands with ideal orientation. Two facilities have set themselves the task of enriching the fan experience: the Banc of California Stadium has the first system with standing-rail fold-down seats in North America. On safe terraces, fans can stand shoulder to shoulder, which contributes to a thrilling and unified stadium atmosphere. In the sta dium of FK Krasnodar in Russia, a 4,700 m² high-resolution video screen facilitates a new quality of media transmission of football events, from the moment when the players walk into the pitch and the celebration of goals through to the final whistle. Two sports buildings in France have attached special importance to the façades. The metal strips of the façade of the Arena du Pays d’Aix are superimposed like contoured slabs and envelop the two halls in a dynamic large form. For the new building at Paris Longchamp race course, the individual levels have been stacked in a slightly staggered arrangement, with the top level having a 20-metre cantilever on one side. Finally, the rebuilt football stadium in Gunja, Croatia, is a meeting place and memorial in one. The main façade consists of bricks from demolished houses that have been refurbished with a special technology and re-used. As always, sb spans a broad arc. Look forward to exciting projects from Canada to Russia!

LARGE VARIETY OF SPORTS AND LEISURE FACILITIES IN SALZBURG AND INNSBRUCK IAKS SWITZERLAND STUDY TRIP IN JUNE 2018 IAKS Switzerland organised a study trip to Salzburg and Innsbruck from 7 to 10 June 2018. Roger Gut, President of IAKS Switzerland, welcomed 15 participants, including two from Vienna. A successful offer exclusively for members, which elicited a very positive response. Thanks in large part to the active assistance of Wolfgang Becker, Director of the University and Land Sports Centre in Rif near Salzburg and IAKS Executive Board member, this trip was a resounding success. Thanks to his contacts, all doors were opened to the study trip party and he was able to divulge a great deal of information from his own experience owing to his many and varied involvements. Pragmatic solutions The first point of call on the Thursday was the University and Land Sports Centre in Rif. This diverse sports facility is used for training and top-level sport. During a tour and various demonstrations, the study party was able to experience the working methods in today’s elite sport at first hand. In the shooting room, for instance, they were shown the data that are evaluated for biathletes at the rifle. The goal is to improve athletes’ performance, be they residents of the Salzburg region or from elsewhere. The sports facility is also available for courses for the general population. The route to school with exercise stations shows how to solve the problem of the “parent taxi”. The vehicles of parents bringing their children to school used to block the driveway to the sports centre every morning. 6

Children decided to give up the car trip in favour of a route to school comprising play, balancing and climbing stations. The 95 % decline in the use of the “parent taxi” has been scientifically demonstrated. Youth academy and football stadium in Salzburg The second day of the study trip was dominated by Red Bull. First of all, the group toured the Red Bull Youth Academy. The facility is devoted to football and ice hockey and develops talented youths into top-level athletes. Its two ice rinks, indoor football hall, two outdoor football pitches and an accommodation, training and further training building make it a centre of the superlatives. During a tour on site, architect Bernd Ramsauer gave insights into the challenges posed by construction and the planning permission process. Becker guided the study party through the Red Bull Arena, the football stadium of FC Salzburg. He was assisted by former stadium manager Alfred Denk who reported on how the stadium came about. The tour took in the “sacred turf”, the “catacombs” and the spectator stands. The tour was rounded off at the Red Bull Hangar 7, a restaurant at Salzburg Airport. The party members saw sb 5/2018

exhibits from Formula One motor racing and historic aircraft, a passion of the Red Bull patron. The day ended with a classical concert in the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

the neighbouring football stadium, the study party made comparisons with Salzburg stadium as the two stadia have a capacity of 30,000 spectators and were built at the same time for the EUFA EURO 2008 championship.

Impressing winter sports facilities at Innsbruck After a largely touristic third day in Salzburg, the group travelled on to Innsbruck. Here they went high up to Bergisel Ski Jump, which is surfaced in the summer months with brush carpeting. The panoramic restaurant is the work of celebrated architect Zaha Hadid. A former member of the Austrian national ski-jumping team led the tour and reported on his participation in the Four Hills Tournament.

The final port of call was Eduard Wallnöfer Platz, also known as “Landhausplatz”, a very bare concrete space in the urban setting serving as the link between the monument and the “Stadthaus ” administrative building. The square has been designed as an exercise space for skaters.

The Olympic site was impressive with its new ice hall, its events hall, which can also be used for skating, and the speed-skating track located outside. During the tour of

Everyone taking part in the study trip was highly taken by the content of the trip. The diversity of the facilities visited, the combination of sports venues with culture, and the opportunity to make acquaintanceships and for face-to-face meetings were the high points of the study trip. IAKS Switzerland intends to continue this interdisciplinary event for its members.

NEW EVENTS VENUE ON DISUSED INDUSTRIAL SITE UGMK ARENA, YEKATERINBURG, RUSSIA The new multifunctional arena in Yekaterinburg is being built to plans by HPP Architects. The municipality and the client UGMK (UMMC or Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company) have agreed on one of three proposed designs. The UGMK Arena will be the new home of the Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg ice hockey team and the UGMK Yekaterinburg women’s basketball club and meets the standards of international competitions. Designed as a multifunctional arena, it is also intended as a venue for numerous other sports such as volleyball, figure skating and boxing as well as major international events. The grandstands and playing field adapt flexibly to the various uses and thus offer the city new opportunities for sports and event business. New centre The construction site is located in the heart of the city on the revitalised banks of the River Isset. For the development of the currently partially disused area, the TV tower, a 220-metre tall ruin left unfinished since the mid1990s, was demolished. The arena enlivens the quarter through its varied uses and the development of new, 8

urban entertainment spaces. A spacious, raised platform defines the entrance level of the building and integrates the stadium into the urban fabric. The translucent façade cladding of horizontal metal rods and the glazed access level open the arena towards its surroundings. The platform houses all the necessary security facilities, parking spaces and delivery as well as a central entrance for visitors, which can be used at major events. Colour scheme inspired by four elements As one of Russia’s industrial cities built from the beginning of the 18th century by decree of the tsar for the development of the metalworking industry, the history of Yekaterinburg is closely linked to this. As the largest sb 5/2018

producer of copper, zinc, hard coal and precious metals in Russia, the client UGMK is still the most important employer in the region today. The elements of earth, fire, water and air therefore enjoy special prominence in the interior design in defining four different areas of corresponding colour and surface design and thus giving the visitor orientation. In the Water area glass block walls are displayed, while the

Metal area is characterised by copper-coloured materials, for example. HPP Architects have been commissioned with the Concept and Schematic Design stages for the architecture and interior design of the new arena. Construction work is scheduled to begin at the end of 2018. www.hpp.com

CLOCKWISE PUDONG FOOTBALL STADIUM IN SHANGHAI, CHINA In the Pudong district of Shanghai a football stadium will be built for the staging of World Cup football tournaments, Olympic Games, the Asian Cup and other top-flight sports events. The new Shanghai Pudong Football Stadium is situated in the green district of Pudong, only 13 km from Shanghai’s city centre and only a few minutes’ travel time from the international airport. Proposed by Gerber Architekten, the seemingly hovering and curved form of the 50,000-capacity stadium stands out on the skyline even at long range. The distinctive and striking design – essentially a bowl of asymmetrical height – stands for the future potential of such an important sports facility and of Shanghai’s expanding urban development. With its dynamic shape, the stadium merges highly autonomously into the adjoining landscape park and becomes part of a green corridor extending into Shanghai’s centre and ranking as one of the eight ecologically important greened spaces for the city’s ongoing development.

straightforwardly to the stadium from various traffic hubs. From the road level, visitors arriving from all directions are guided via four spacious ramps arranged clockwise around the stadium to a continuous large-area piazza. The latter offers visitors plenty of space, before and after the game, to meet, stroll or simply hang out. Proceeding from the piazza via a multitude of staircases following the clockwise pattern and uniformly distributed around the stadium, visitors access another level accommodating numerous shops and the access ways to the seats and the exclusive lounge decks. The many different staircases ensure controlled access before each football match and for other events as well.

The building’s asymmetrical structure visible from its exterior gives an indication of the seating arrangement in its interior. The curved bowl of varying height stands on a plinth that accommodates all the stadium’s ancillary functions such as retailing, changing rooms for the players, sanitary facilities and other functions.

An inflatable air cushion construction of translucent PTFE films has been proposed as the protective roof over the stands. In the dark a highly advanced lighting system integrated in the roof structure causes the stadium to shine out as a landmark far across the city.

Controlled access Around the football stadium a differentiated network of paths has been developed that feeds visitors reliably and

OPTIMAL SHARED USAGE FEYENOORD ACADEMY AND SPORTS CLUB FEYENOORD TRAINING COMPLEX IN ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS In August 2018, construction of the new Feyenoord Academy and Sports Club Feyenoord got underway. Both Feyenoord organisations will use the new building. MoederscheimMoonen Architects is responsible for the design of the building for both Feyenoord users, where professional football, leisure and sports experience come together. The new building will become one of Varkenoord Sports Campus’s innovators. In addition to housing the Feyenoord Academy and Sports Club Feyenoord, the building will become an important venue for matches of the U23 and other Feyenoord teams. Hence, the building will be equipped with a covered stand comprising 1,100 seats. The facilities are clearly structured with the changing facilities, medical rooms and sports areas situated on the ground floor. The first floor accommodates offices, study rooms, multifunctional rooms, a large canteen for the Sports Club and a separate restaurant and players’ lounge for the Feyenoord Academy. The two organisations have their own separate entrances; the Feyenoord Academy enters through the centre of the building whereas the Sports Club Feyenoord uses the south side entrance which is connected to the terrace. From the central entrance, the functions on each side are distributed per user, but, in use, rooms will be shared regularly. A powerful gold-coloured roof The image-defining element of the building is the generously designed gold-coloured roof. The roof ensures that the entire gallery is covered and gives the building an allround character through its cantilevers. The floor has also 12

been powerfully designed as a gold-coloured slab. This platform provides exterior circulation around the building, where many people will gather, either on the terrace or the walkway above the stand. The design is further characterised by symmetry and an unambiguous building structure. Between these gold layers, the façade has been designed with steel panels creating verticality in the façade and giving the building depth and texture. Space for sport and games Around the building there are various types of football fields, training zones and sports and play areas, which are also arranged around the entrance square. The composition of the forecourt anticipates the symmetry of the total design; spacious footpaths lead to the entrances and are surrounded by attractive green areas. Regarding sustainability, the building has become 90 % more energy-efficient than required by building regulations. All measures taken for this will ensure that the building will become energy-neutral. The completion of the complex is planned for mid-2019. www.moederscheimmoonen.nl sb 5/2018

FIRST SAFE STANDING WITH RAIL SEATING BANC OF CALIFORNIA STADIUM IN LOS ANGELES

Location Los Angeles, USA Client/operator Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) Architects Gensler 500 South Figueroa Street Los Angeles, US-CA 90071 www.gensler.com Author LAFC Photos LAFC Official opening April 2018 Construction costs USD 350 million (EUR 302 million)

16

Designed by Gensler, Banc of California Stadium is the home of Major League Soccer’s latest expansion team, Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). Set to debut in April 2018, the 22,000-seat development sets the benchmark and redefines the soccer-specific stadium fan and player experience. The new home for the world’s game in Los Angeles lies in the heart of the city in one of the city’s most historic areas. Depending on your point of view, the Banc of California Stadium is the first open-air sta dium built in Los Angeles since 1962. You c an put it this way if you consider that the sta dium of derby rival L.A. Galaxy is located in Carson, technically outside the city. Built on the site of the former L.A. Memorial Sports Arena, the Banc of California Stadium is located in the Exposition Park and sits just meters away from the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. The stadium based on this unique Olympic site – which was home to the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games – will once again be a host venue in 2028.

As a replacement, the stadium had to fit in terms of scale. The field of play was thus sunken 6.7 meters into the ground, which also facilitates crowd circulation as fans enter the lower ring of the stands from street level. The capacity is for 22,000 spectators with an option of temporary expansion by addition of foyer seats. The supporters of the home team are mainly to be found at ‘The North End’. The LAFC supporter’s section offers capacity for 3,252 spectators. By curiosity, this fact has given the name to the Independent Supporters Union for LAFC (‘The 3252’). sb 5/2018

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder Interesting contribution to the fan experience: The supporters’ section is the only safe standing section on the West Coast and the first safe standing-rail seats in North America. Safe standing provides an opportunity for supporters to stand shoulder-to-shoulder, creating an electric and unified stadium atmosphere on match days. The first-of-its-kind rail seating system is designed for comfort and safety and to accommodate sight lines by eliminating obstructions. At 34 degrees, the supporters‘ section is the steepest in Major League Soccer. LAFC has committed to pricing supporters’ section memberships at USD 20 per match: a dedication to all vocal fans. This sum is in high contrast to the investment budget at immense USD 350 million. The stadium was financed entirely privately. Banc of California secured a significant part of the loan. The naming rights deal runs for 15 years. sb 5/2018

The stadium provides almost complete cover of all seats. The canopy is lightweight and based on slender longspan cantilevers. In total only 2,300 tons of steel was used in the construction of this stadium, both to support the upper stands and to provide shade. The roof consists of 17,600 m² of ETFE. With no opaque facades and two empty corners, the stadium provides good ventilation and offers some fans a view of the skyline. European style The design of the stadium creates a European-style soc cer experience, providing greater intimacy and a concerted effort to bring fans closer to the action. The closest seat to the field is only 3.7 m away from the touchline. The furthest a fan can sit is 41 meters away, which means everyone has a good and unobstructed view of the field. The Field Suites allow fans to have their feet on the grass. These suites provide access to an exclusive, high-end and 17

unique Field Club giving exclusive access to the field and LAFC players as they enter and exit the field. The raised Sunset Deck is a distinctive, unique place in all of sports equipped with indoor/outdoor lounge furniture and creating an impressive viewing area. Besides the TIAA Bank Field football stadium in Jacksonville, the private boxes at the Banc of California Stadium are the only ones to have a swimming pool attached. Mid-field level suites allow access to the Founder’s Club, the most expansive and wide-open club in the stadium. The club is completely open air with 4.3 m ceilings and views of the pitch. There are a total of 46 loge boxes and a total of five different and separate club spaces in the stadium. 18

LEED silver stadium Over 100 permanent bicycle parking spaces (and 440 on game day) with bike valet contribute to the eco- friendly allocation. Five per cent of the parking spaces have electric vehicle charging stations and 20 per cent are electric vehicle ready infrastructure. Together with these ecologic transport solutions, other main features which underlined the successful application for the ‘LEED silver stadium’ certificate are energy efficiency, rainwater harvesting, and green spaces around. THREE CLUBS UNDER ONE ROOF VARKENOORD CLUBHOUSE IN ROTTERDAM Three sports clubs with different backgrounds and ‘club cultures’ are joining forces on the new Rotterdam sports campus: two soccer clubs (FC IJsselmonde and Overmaas) and Feyenoord Hockey Club are sharing a common facility. NL Architects are positioning the building between the two main soccer fields and the adjoining pitches. The clubhouse attempts to exploit its specific position. Hesitation about sharing new accommodation is understandable. This could mean giving up autonomy and sacrificing influence – but there are also advantages. The new Varkenoord clubhouse pursues these potential synergies. How can the architects create a new combined identity for the cluster but still leave room for the individual clubs to have their own identity? The clubhouse lies in the middle of three soccer pitches, two hockey pitches, and beach volleyball facilities.

Archetypal house acquires a new dimension The layout of the clubhouse is logical. The building exploits its specific location. The two main soccer pitches are placed parallel with space in between. This provides the perfect location for an elongated clubhouse typology. The long sides offer perfect view of the pitches. As a consequence of this position alongside the pitches, the pitched roof became a two- sided grandstand with the best-possible orientation. The grandstand is made of standard- issue concrete elements placed on a light

steel structure. The roof becomes habitable, accessible: a two-sided grandstand becomes an element that fully capitalises on the characteristic orientation of the playing fields. Double height The effects on the interior are also remarkable. The room height feels luxurious. The double height alternates with mezzanines that provide access to multifunctional rooms and to the terraces, open-air skyboxes accessible to all. The large ceiling is clad with wooden panels that are perforated for acoustic reasons. At ground level, a central ‘artery’ provides access to the changing rooms that blend into the pitch. The façades of the changing rooms – unattractive by nature – are hidden behind a slope. This ‘dyke’ is clad with artificial turf to blend it into its surroundings which, like most pitches nowadays, are also covered with artificial grass: the fields ‘curl up’ at the edges. 22

The corridor changes colour, from blue in the north to red in the south – to improve orientation in the long structure. The changing rooms change colour accordingly. Two cross passageways lead to the main soccer fields. Cafeteria on top On top of the green embankment a transparent pavilion is placed with bars and offices and meeting rooms enjoying the panoramic view. The terrace extends to the building’s perimeter and enjoys a superlative view of the playing fields. A large veranda surrounds the clubhouse. The ‘public’ part of the canteen meanders through the building, dividing the space naturally in sections for each club. For sustainability reasons, solar panels are located on the very top of the structure that also houses some technical installations and piping.

MEDIAL PRESENTATION KRASNODAR STADIUM In dialogue with the client, gmp ∙ Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners have developed the building from the urban design aspects through to the last detail, throughout the design and construction period. The result is a high-quality football arena to UEFA guidelines that provides a unique experience to spectators: whereas from the outside there is a reference to the amphitheater of antiquity as the generic type of venue for all modern stadiums, on the inside the world’s first 360 degree screen of its kind offers new opportunities for media display. The stadium of FC Krasnodar, a football club in Russia’s top league, has been designed as a pure football stadium for 33,000 spectators. Besides the venues for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Krasnodar Stadium is one of the newest stadium buildings in Russia. Located to the northeast of this southern Russian city, the stadium stands on a plinth next to the club’s football academy in a generous park landscape that has also been designed by gmp.

Generic type of venue for all modern stadiums With its classical division of the elevation into three parts, the external appearance of the building makes clear reference to the generic style of the original amphitheater of ancient times, featuring fluted pilasters of almost white Roman travertine arranged in a regular pattern. By contrast, the roof over the grandstands has been designed as a lightweight ring cable sb 5/2018

structure. Its two-layer covering membrane consists of PTFE-coated glass-fiber mesh, creating a three-dimensional roof shape that integrates technical services such as floodlighting, and heating for the spectator stands. 4,700 m² high-resolution video screen The area behind the top tier is fully equipped with LED modules all around. Their wave-like curved contour results from the geometry of the stadium, the basic oval shape of which intersects with the grandstands facing the rectangular pitch. This 4,700 m² high-resolution video screen enables a new quality of medial 26

presentation of the football events, from the players’ arrival on the pitch to goal celebrations and the final whistle. In this way, the design combines the rationality of the construction and tectonics in a unique way: the result is an exciting contrast between the lightweight and highly efficient roof structure and the archetypal form of the bowl and façade, creating the charged atmosphere of a football arena with the help of this state-of-the-art media technology. In addition, the venue has created a lively public place that is attractive far beyond the city of Krasnodar. sb 5/2018

GRANDSTAND IN MOTION RACECOURSE IN PARIS LONGCHAMP As the main element of Dominique Perrault’s intervention, the new grandstand was built in place of the demolished existing stands. With a capacity of about 10,000 seats, the building has four levels, a restaurant with a roof terrace on the top floor, five reception rooms, five bars, a brasserie, media rooms and hospitality areas. The first two levels are open to the public, the third floor is reserved for the professionals and owners, and the fourth and fifth floor (with 17 suites and 12 private lounges) for the VIP. In a dynamic movement the grandstand evokes the idea of a galloping horse, and its volume guides the attention down to the track. The levels are slightly offset from one another until the last level, which presents an overhang of about twenty metres. At double slope the levels are tilted forward to the track and to the finishing line. The horizontality of the tribune and its gilded bronze colour contributes to the integration of the building in the surrounding landscape.

Porosity Open from both directions, the new grandstand is composed of open floors, and the circulation arrangement is designed to allow free movement in the various spaces. The building provides a 360-degree view of the track thanks to its transparency and to its orientation: down to the track on one side, and down to the paddock on the other. The sensation of space and the feeling of openness is derived from the large amount of natural light admitted by the generously dimensioned windows. The idea was a building with neither front nor back, where you can circulate freely from one sb 5/2018

side to the other, without obstacles. The new building offers also more flexibility and modularity. The suites for example can be transformed into a direct access to the main lounge. The interior structure consists of concrete and metal, the stands are covered with wood. The golden aluminium façades contribute to the integration of the volume in its environment by playing with the light with the changing seasons. Echoing the former Longchamp stands, the screen-printed glazed balustrades evoke the flower planters of the former racecourse. View of the Eiffel Tower Throughout the building, there is unobstructed access and views of both the racecourse and the wider landscape. The Panorama restaurant, with its terrace and its stands offers a breathtaking view of the racecourse and the distant landscape: the Eiffel Tower, Mont Valérien and Paris-La Défense. The terraces also offer views of the stables and the parade ring, creating a direct relation between the public and the equestrian world. Commemorating heritage With its new grandstand, lower and shorter than the previous one, the new racecourse puts the emphasis on the sb 5/2018

landscaped spaces. The landscape project sublimates the landscape work made in the 19th century by Adolphe Alphand, with a scenography of the walkway of visitors and horses. Thus the horses pass by the stands to access the course and are visible from the terrace of the building. The main lawn area can receive temporary facilities, and the promenade recalls the “planches” of Deauville designed by architect Charles Adda. This pedestrian prom enade of 5,500 metres located at 4.50 metres above the ground organises the flows between the ‘Entrée d’honneur‘ entry, the access to the lawn by the tunnel, the restaurant, the galleries, the paddock stands and the Longchamp garden stands. It also offers space for temporary events. The built environment and the gardens form a coherent whole. The project values the existing heritage represented by trees in finding a spatial development close to the original Longchamp. It restores visual permeability at the west fringe level to reduce the boundary effect between the racecourse and the rest of the Bois de Boulogne forest. 105 new trees were planted (in total 600 on the site) and the large lawn spaces make the space greener and shadier. 29

THREE QUESTIONS TO THE ARCHITECT

DOMINIQUE PERRAULT Owner Dominique Perrault Architecture

Why was the historical background important for the new racecourse to be flexible, innovative, polyvalent? The renewal of the Longchamp racecourse was to ensure that it maintained its place in both the Grand Paris and on the international scene of the world’s major racecourses. This ambitious goal was guided not only by an emblematic architectural project that can be adapted to future needs, but also a landscape project that transfigures the area, highlighting the built legacy, the historical heritage of the racecourse, and especially the green heritage of the Bois de Boulogne forest, which composition was originally designed by Adolphe Alphand in the 19th century. How did you proceed for the restoration and the new buildings? The race for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is the high point in the annual agenda of the racecourse. Therefore, the main challenge of this project was to host this event, which draws up to 60,000 spectators, under exceptional conditions, while also welcoming a much smaller crowd on ordinary racing days. This is why we decided to deconstruct all the stands dating from the 1960s and to replace them with only one stand, which is both more compact and more functional. Buildings housing support services for the horse races, which are currently scattered around the site, were demolished and rebuilt in the form of pavilions. Finally, the historic buildings of the racecourse were renovated. What is the idea behind the architectural concept? The architectural concept is one of transparent “shelves”, with neither front nor back, enabling spectators to go back and forth from a view over the stables to a view over the racecourse. In short, the architectural project creates generous perspectives over the landscape thanks to the significant reduction of the size of the existing constructions on the site. The architectural design is very pared down, simple and elegant, allowing the gaze and light to pass through the buildings. sb 5/2018

LIKE A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES FOOTBALL STADIUM IN GUNJA In 2014 raging floods devastated eastern Croatia. The Croatian Football Association, the World Football Association (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) raised funds for the reconstruction of five football pitches and a new stadium. Designed by GEplus ARHITEKTI, the Gunja stadium is integral to the population’s identity and fundamental to the development of a new generation of athletes. The stadium in Gunja may be small in size, but its construction is of great importance for the local community. The most prominent element of the stadium‘s visual identity is its main façade. Built out of bricks, it gives the stadium a monumental value, as the bricks come from houses that were destroyed by the floods. From a total of 12,000 remaining fragments, the best-preserved pieces were processed using a special technology and then reused for construction.

Meeting point and memorial The architects were aware that this project meant much more than the conventional renovation of a sports facility in a rural setting. From the very beginning, the building was seen as an important meeting place for the local community. At the same time, the interesting story of its creation was to be embedded in the building as a memory. The main inspiration for the architectural concept is the very cause of its construction – a disastrous flood that had sb 5/2018

destroyed the old stadium. By using bricks from the demolished houses, history materialises in the building’s façade. Tight budget This was the first stadium infrastructure realised by the Croatian Football Association itself. The budget allowed only for the most basic functions of the building. Resources for elaborating its visual appearance were few. It required great architectural creativity and technical flexibility to give the building a visual value alongside its sb 5/2018

functional features. Financial constraints deprived it of numerous technical facilities that are standard in modern stadiums. The focus is on the architecture and the added value that the building creates for the local community. The building’s structure was mainly influenced by its rural context and its location in a green environment. Situated in a park-like setting, a distinctive avenue of lime trees has been planted parallel to the borders of the football grounds, surrounding the stadium with natural, green scenery. 33

The building’s visual identity is based on the fundamental requirements of football. The materials for its construction were chosen in the spirit of this rudimentary functionality, hence natural concrete prevails both indoors and outdoors. The element that balances the entire composition of the building, is designed as an L-shaped concrete canopy. It bears an inscription commemorating the floods. 34

Spatial functionality The stadium was built according to national requirements for matches of the Croatian Third Football League. The indoor areas are located along one side of the L-shaped corridor, starting from the club office. The ambulance room can also serve as a doping examination room. There are two locker rooms for players, followed by the locker room for the referees and coaches and a utility room. On the opposite side of the corridor there is a cabinet system for storing sb 5/2018

sports equipment, utilising the empty space under the grandstand. The football grounds are directly accessible from the hallway. In addition to the 337 seats there is a control room in the grandstand, which can be used by the police and other officials during football matches. Direct access to the football pitch is also possible from the outdoor storage facility on the south side and concealed by the embankment. On the north side, as sb 5/2018

part of the main faรงade, there is a kiosk and entrance to the public sanitary facilities. This ensures that the kiosk and sanitary facilities are visible and accessible to the spectators, but simultaneously concealed by the vertical wall with the L-shaped canopy, so as not to disrupt the architecture of the northern faรงade with its inscription. Easy access to the shop and sanitary facilities is an advantage when the car park is being used for festive occasions and other events.

LUMINESCENT LAYERS ARENA DU PAYS D‘AIX, AIX-EN-PROVENCE In the Arena du Pays d‘Aix, opened in September 2017, architects Auer Weber and Christophe Gulizzi have created a building that blends seamlessly into its surrounding topography: The metal-clad rings of the façade are stacked in luminescent layers, embracing the two halls and creating one large dynamic entity. The modular principle of the arena – the “chaudron” – gives it a great versatility: Depending on configuration, the hall can offer 6,000 to 8,500 seats. The arena is located at a motorway junction, south west of Aix-en-Provence. It is the homeground of the local first-division handball club Pays d‘Aix Université Club. At first glance, the arena has no front or back, but seems to be constructed all of a piece. The prominent but simultaneously reticent building blends into its surrounding topography. Layered rings create dynamism The metal-clad rings of the façade are stacked in luminescent layers, embracing the two halls – a large event hall with capacities for 8,500 and a smaller hall for 2,000 spectators – and creating one large dynamic entity. Randomly

offset and almost like separate structures, the bright rings float above a transparent base, giving the whole construction a certain lightness. The façade adapts to the site conditions with geometrical modifications. The rings are arranged with a much stronger shift towards the forecourt than to the other sides, thus forming a distinctive canopy. Above the entrance area it reaches a height of 12 metres, welcoming the visitor with an inviting gesture and offering shelter from the elements. ROGERS PLACE MULTI-PURPOSE ARENA IN EDMONTON From its iconic modern architecture, to its buzz-worthy restaurants and the NHL’s largest true HD scoreboard, Rogers Place delivers a world-class, awe-inspiring entertainment experience. Opened in September 2016, the new home of the Edmonton Oilers, Edmonton Oil Kings and an all-star roster of live entertainment truly has something for everyone. The vision of Rogers Place was born when Daryl Katz purchased the Oilers in 2008. At the time he stated a desire to not only find the Oilers a new home in downtown Edmonton, but to do it in a style that would transform the city and encourage further downtown development. Through his partnership with the City of Edmonton, that vision has already been realized with over USD 2 billion of development underway in Katz’s Ice District development alone in phase one and billions more planned in the future. Rogers Place is an arena built for fans. The arena measures 76,106 m². Among its many significant features are a lower bowl of over

9,000 seats, terrific sightlines, wide concourses, leading food and beverage offerings, and the latest in technology. Rogers Place seats 18,347 for hockey games and 20,000+ for concerts and other events. Whether attending an Oilers game or the biggest of concerts, guests of Rogers Place experience it all in the most dynamic of entertainment environments. As of September 13, 2018, 3.3 million guests have already walked through its doors. Although Rogers Place is just two years old, the history of the Edmonton Oilers and hockey in Edmonton is celebrated throughout the building. Accessing from the public transport station, guests pass by a brightly coloured, circular sculpture titled Skater’s Arch, achieving a dramatic pictorial presence. Its flowing, window-like form becomes a framing device capturing the dynamics of ice-skating. The push of the blade, as it cuts into the ice surface to propel the skater forward, is exemplified through a myriad of cut-out shapes, which evoke the style of Henri Matisse, creating the sculpture’s dynamic form. Central gathering place Ford Hall is the jewel of Rogers Place. It is a stunning combination of architecture, technology, natural light and art that serves as the front door for Rogers Place. The 3,160 m² public space will act as a link between 46

Rogers Place and the Ice District Plaza upon its completion in 2020. Together the two will become a central gathering place in Edmonton’s downtown, hosting a variety of programming from pre-game tailgating to festivals, ceremonies and cultural events. Located in the centre of Ford Hall, Tsa t̨ sa ̨ ke k’e – “Iron Foot Place” by Canadian artist Alex Janvier is a breathtaking 14 m in diameter, circular mosaic set in the floor. The piece represents the natural beauty of the Edmonton area, highlighting the skies, lakes and stories of the region. It illustrates Edmonton’s history and continuing legacy as a meeting place. Future growth and sustainability Attached to Rogers Place is the new Downtown Community Arena, which is operated by the City of Edmonton and was built as part of the Rogers Place project. sb 5/2018

The facility provides a programmable community space for free public skates, ice rentals for minor sports teams and learn-to-skate programs. Beyond the arena, Rogers Place is the anchor of Ice District, a mixed-use district that will help revitalize and invigorate life in Edmonton‘s downtown core. Ice District will feature a hotel, two office towers with the City of Edmonton as the anchor tenant, condominiums and apartments, restaurants and nightlife, a casino, a child-care centre and a diverse range of retail options. At 69-stories in height (66 functional floors), Stantec Tower will be the tallest building west of Toronto in Canada. Conscious construction During construction, 89.3 per cent of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill so it could be sb 5/2018

reused or recycled. Beyond waste reduction, the building is located in a high-density neighbourhood and is connected to downtown through walkways around the facility and transit infrastructure, including several Light Rail Transit stops within a ten-minute walk. The building also features low-flow plumbing fixtures, charging stations for electric cars in the parkade and has incorporated green cleaning and an improved processing of food waste to help cut down the building’s water and waste use. A leader in environmental awareness, Rogers Place received LEED Silver Certification in December 2017, and was the first NHL facility in Canada built to LEED Silver certification requirements. This state-of-the-art facility is a catalyst to the city’s downtown core while also setting the bar for future growth and sustainability.

A DESIGN FOR LEGACY FISHT OLYMPIC STADIUM IN SOCHI Authors and Photos

Damon Lavelle, Principal, POPULOUS (left) Tom Jones, Senior Principal, POPULOUS (right)

Four years on from the Sochi Winter Olympics, Fisht Stadium continues to thrive as a hub of sporting and civic activity in Russia. It owes its name to the 2,867 m mountain in the western Caucasus. Located approximately 1,630 km south of Moscow on a narrow sliver of land nestling between the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea, the Russian city of Sochi is home to one of the country’s most successful sports legacy projects to date, Fisht Stadium. The stadium was originally designed to stage the 2014 Winter Olympics and has evolved to host 2018 FIFA World Cup matches, as well as games for club side PFC Sochi and the Russian national team. The wider Olympic Park area is the setting for a wide variety of cultural festivals throughout the year and encompasses sections of the newly developed Sochi Autodrom race track, which has seen Formula 1 return to Russia for the first time in over 100 years. Scalability From the outset, it was clear that to ensure the long-term success of the project, Fisht’s seating capacity would need to rise and fall to meet the myriad needs of event organizers. The ambition was to accommodate 35,000 spectators for the Winter Olympics and 45,000 for World Cup games, then to scale back down to 20,000 to 25,000 seats for local club football. To achieve this, the architects proposed an innovative open-ended stadium, with permanent stands on the eastern and western sides of the bowl 48

supported by low-level seating at either end with modular temporary seating above. These plans were approved in 2008, and building work commenced in 2010. However, in 2011, half way through construction, the initial designs were revised at the request of event organisers to include a temporary roof that would protect against bad weather for the opening and closing ceremonies. Adapting to a changing brief Late in the project, this posed a significant engineering challenge. The east and west stands had been designed with plenty of latent load bearing capacity, but the north and south ends of the stadium lacked the supporting structures to accommodate such a massive construction. The solution was to build two huge hangars in place of the low-level seating originally planned for these spaces. The hangars would be installed for the duration of the Winter Olympics after which they would be removed, along with the roof. But these modifications proved to be so successful that post-Games a review was undertaken as to whether Fisht Stadium should remain a closed venue. However, after consultation with FIFA it became clear that closed venues were not considered suitable for hosting sb 5/2018

World Cup matches, so the temporary structures were disassembled and construction on the seating bowl was completed. In the run-up to the tournament, the addition of luxury corporate suites further enhanced the stadium’s offer of permanent seating. This means that today, Fisht’s capac ity stands at 36,000 seats. Showcasing Sochi Despite these changes, the original design concept for the development shines through, underpinned by an architectural language that focuses on showcasing the natural beauty of the surrounding area while also speaking to Russia’s cultural heritage. This concept can be seen clearly in the form of the east and west stands, which open elegantly like a Fabergé egg to reveal the seating bowl. The open spaces at either end of the stadium create a striking visual through-line from the sea to the mountains beyond, and an openbacked concourse allows visitors to explore the outer podium with uninhibited panoramic views of the wider region. The permanent canopies over the stands have been constructed from ETFE multi-layered film cushions. With sb 5/2018

excellent light transmission properties, ETFE allows the natural grass playing surface to absorb the ultra-violet light it needs to grow while simultaneously sheltering spectators from the elements. From inside the stadium, these cushions act as a lens, offering a playfully distorted view of the sea and the mountains and casting variegated light patterns across the bowl as the mid-afternoon sun shines through. From the outside, a white tint applied to the outermost layer of film gives the stadium a look evocative of the snowcapped mountain it is named after, and at night LED lights within the cushions themselves illuminate the façade with a vibrant rainbow of colours. A stadium that floats Sochi lies in a seismically active zone, with some areas at risk from magnitude-10.0 earthquakes – the most severe grading. Large earthquakes have the potential to cause a geological phenomenon known as liquefaction, which occurs when the soil loses its form and starts to behave like a liquid, swallowing up buildings like the sea would a sinking ship. In the event of such a disaster, a huge band that runs through the Fisht’s foundation, holding the east and west stands together in tension, will allow it to float above the churning ground, ensuring that the sta dium will remain intact. 49

2018 WORLD CUP AT MOSCOW’S FOOTBALL TEMPLE HAURATON MODERNISES DRAINAGE SYSTEM AT LUZHNIKI STADIUM Author and Photos

HAURATON GmbH & Co. KG, Werkstraße 13, DE-76437 Rastatt, www.hauraton.com

The FIFA Football World Cup in Russia – a 2018 event of global importance. Kick-off was on 14 June 2018 at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. Now extended to a seating capacity of around 81,000, it is one of Europe‘s largest arenas. A semi-final and the final of the 2018 World Cup were held here. Star appearance for the service channel range For Hauraton the World Cup started on the spot four years ago: The Baden-based drainage technology firm was involved in the full-scale modernisation of the magnificent stadium and has done an excellent job of preparing the drainage systems for the games of the future. The company’s service channel range put in a top-level performance on the pitch in allowing cables and wires to be laid extremely quickly and in various configurations. Lots of glass, space and light Luzhniki Stadium, which, alongside sporting events, has already served as an impressive backdrop for major international concerts by the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson 50

and U2, was declared by Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin to be a “symbol of Russia’s development”. The project to modernise the structure was therefore one with high expectations. For the architect in charge, Murat Achmadiev, the greatest construction challenge was to preserve the monumental 1956 façade, while at the same time creating a modern, luxurious five-star stadium to meet UEFA criteria. He overcame the constraints of the historic structure with a very distinctive and spacious approach, which allows plenty of light to pass through the glass and interiors. The interiors are in timeless black and white. The architect is proud of the new water management and drainage system: “Even if there were tropical rainfall, I can promise you wouldn’t see any puddles here.” sb 5/2018

Hauraton and its local partners complete project in four years The entire reconstruction of the drainage system was overseen by the Baden-based company, from sketches and specifications to the selection of the appropriate Sportfix product range comprising channels, sand traps, soft kerbs, ditches and water jump kits, right through to delivery and expert, timely installation in the various zones of the huge sports complex. In strict compliance with all guidelines and quality requirements, around 400 metres of Sportfix channels, 450 metres of Recyfix Pro 100 and 415 metres of Faserfix Super, among others, were fitted. The service channels offer flexible ways to quickly gain approval for structural changes to sports sb 5/2018

facilities, industrial plants and exhibition halls. Designers are thus using safer systems that can be adapted to new situations in no time. These systems use non-flammable channels made of fibre-reinforced concrete. “By 2011, we were already working with our local partners and the project team on preliminary work and documentation”, recalls Matthias Unser, whose role at Hauraton includes responsibility for the Russian market. “All products were finished by the end of 2016 as planned, with implementation carried out excellently too. The project was completed at the end of 2017 – and the building contractor was more than happy with the result.” The new Luzhniki Stadium was rightly in the public eye at the 2018 World Cup! 51

In top-level competitive sport today, millimetres and milliseconds count. That‘s why it is hard to imagine a time before the methods used for performance diagnostics. An increasing number of amateur athletes appreciate a professional analysis of their personal performance. Sports clubs and training academies which offer such comprehensive performance diagnostics increase their appeal to new members and potential sponsors considerably, especially when performance diagnostics is combined with an attractive sports facility where all of the relevant data can be gathered, even under competitive conditions. Polytan SmarTracks is a precise data acquisition system that provides daily training diagnostics without complex technical structures. SmarTracks offers not only performance diagnostics but precise time measurement, whereby running time, speed, step length, step frequency and step height are all recorded. This makes it an ideal analysis tool for track athletics disciplines, such as short, 52

medium and long-distance running, hurdles and relay running. Another special feature of this technology is that the motion data of multiple athletes can be recorded simultaneously and then compared. Recording and analysing personal motion data The Polytan SmarTracks system is based on the interaction of three components: (1) SmarTracks timing gates invisibly integrated into the running track or playing field. (2) A waist belt with a wearable sensor weighing just 12 g, which does not restrict or hinder the athlete‘s freedom of movement. It can easily be worn as a belt or clip on the body. (3) The tried-andtested SmarTracks diagnostics software from Polytan’s partner Humotion. This company specialises in the collection and analysis of human motion data. sb 5/2018

Combined with the timing gates, all key parameters are recorded via the SmarTracks sensor and clearly displayed and evaluated using the SmarTracks diagnostics software on a laptop.

the running track was designed to meet the particular requirements of a relay training course. This means that the distances between the magnetic elements are 10 m, and in the sensitive exchange zone only 5 m.

Retrofit into existing facilities Polytan SmarTracks system is suitable for all synthetic surfaces for outdoor sport. It can also be easily retrofitted into existing athletics facilities. The timing gate works when two round magnetic elements (600 mm long and 25 mm thick) are completely sunk into the ground at a distance of 1.0 m to 1.30 m. One Tartan track requires two magnetic elements, two tracks require three, three tracks four, and so on. A minimum distance of 5 m between the timing gates in the direction of running is recommended. In Berlin‘s Mommsen Stadium one lane of

Masterly feedback German sprinters Tatjana Pinto and Amelie-Sofie Lederer have both enjoyed good experiences with SmarTracks. Amelie-Sofie Lederer is the Bavarian record holder over 100 m, while Tatjana Pinto recently took bronze at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin for the women‘s German 4 x 100-metre relay. Tatjana Pinto on SmarTracks: “It’s great that SmarTracks is an invisible system and doesn’t bother me while I train. I can easily carry out my training programme and I get quick feedback on my performance.“

WITH LONG GUARANTEE STADIUM ROOF IN ROSTOV, RUSSIA Author Photos

Serge Ferrari SAS, F-38352 La Tour du Pin Cedex, www.sergeferrari.com Serge Ferrari SAS

The football arena in Rostov is one of the 2018 FIFA World Cup stadiums that hosted four matches during the group stage and the exciting match in the last sixteen between Belgium and Japan. The stadium roof consists of 50,000 m² Flexlight Xtrem TX30-IV composite material. The arena is located on the south bank of the river Don and was designed by architectural firm Populous, which has already realized numerous renowned stadiums worldwide and collaborated with Serge Ferrari on various major projects. The membrane roof of the stadium provides perfect conditions for the 45,000 spectators by offering shade from the sun’s rays and protection from the weather. Serge Ferrari’s Flexlight Xtrem TX30 composite material was chosen for the roof over rival products because of its exceptional durability and up to 25-year guarantee, su perior look and outstanding sustainability profile. The roof consists of 46 segments separated by steel arches, which were fitted with Flexlight Xtrem TX30-IV and tensioned with a system of steel cables attached to pillars in the outside wall. The exceptionally tough membrane is ideal for the local climate because it can withstand extreme snow and wind loads. This material also scored top marks for its excellent durability (30 years), 56

GOST fire prevention certification, which has to be provided for large construction projects in Russia, and its superb dirt-resistance capabilities thanks to its crosslink PVDF surface coating. The crosslink formula is a key technological breakthrough for the Serge Ferrari Group because, inspired by cross linked epoxy coatings, it was transferred to flexible ma terials for the first time. Due to its lasting resistance to corrosion and the elements (ultra violet rays, rain, snow), the membrane’s structural strength remains intact and therefore guarantees its good appearance for decades. Despite this special treatment, the membrane makes no compromises on aspects such as a low weight and high degree of flexibility. Further benefits were the membrane’s exceptional translucency with more than 100% of natural light than conventional PVC membranes as well as twice the heat insulation compared with glass- PTFE materials. sb 5/2018

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE AT WESTPAC STADIUM WELLINGTON PANOMERA® MULTIFOCAL SENSOR SYSTEMS FOR THE BIG VIEW Photos

Dallmeier electronic GmbH & Co.KG, Bahnhofstr. 16, DE-93047 Regensburg, www.dallmeier.com

As part of an ongoing CCTV upgrade, Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, was looking to vastly expand the coverage of the CCTV system. The goal was not only to view stands in the stadium, but also to cover the entire field in order to provide situational awareness during major events. After careful evaluation, the decision fell for a solution with multiple Dallmeier Panomera® units. The stadium threat environment is constantly changing. With traditional PTZ camera-based systems (pan / tilt / zoom), the operator has to choose between overview image and detailed view, creating a considerable risk of missing out critical information and limiting analysis options. Large areas and no gaps It was this paradox, highlighted by an incident at Westpac Stadium when the previous CCTV solution failed to record, that drove management’s openness to a surveillance solution that delivers operators situational awareness across an entire angle of view and throughout an entire depth of field. Westpac is now the first stadium in the world to achieve entire field and stand CCTV coverage, and the first in the southern hemisphere to benefit from the surveillance power of Panomera®. Dallmeier’s Panomera® multifocal sensor system was specially developed for the all encompassing video surveillance of expansive areas such as stadiums. With Panomera®, huge widths as well as areas with large distances can be displayed with a completely new resolution quality, in real time and at high frame rates of up to 30 fps. With one system, a huge area can be surveyed from a single location in extraordinary detail. Movements of objects, such as people or vehicles, can be tracked and reconstructed over long distances without any gaps in the recording or camera switching. Not only does Panomera® zoom in well with clarity, but it can also do so in sb 5/2018

playback. Backed by the system’s LGC Forensics certification, it is thus possible to recognise all persons involved, and to later reconstruct any event for use as evidence in court, regardless of where it took place. “Just” 14 cameras As this is the first stadium in the world to cover seating and the field using Panomera®, there are more units than usually installed in order to handle the huge increase in coverage. Still, Westpac Stadium’s 14 Panomera® cameras provide an effective complement of 98 cameras. Coverage is complete, with some overlap, and the addition of a couple of PTZs allows the security team to look for specific details at very high resolutions. A key issue for Westpac Stadium was ensuring the new solution gave coverage of the field area during night concerts – a requirement that could be easily fulfilled with the Nightline Panomera®, which has strong performance in low light. “Due to the ‘Panomera® effect’, huge widths and large distances can be displayed with a completely new quality, beginning where HD and megapixel cameras reach their limits thanks to Panomera®´s completely novel lens and sensor concept”, says Frank Oetjen, Area Manager Australasia & Southern Africa at Dallmeier. “With the innovative technology approach of the Panomera® system, Westpac Stadium has now better coverage with more flexibility while at the same time deploying less cameras and thus reducing cost and complexity within their surveillance system.” 57

SOCCA WORLD CUP IN LISBON

GREEN ICE RINK MADE OF REAL ICE

Lisbon played host to 32 teams from around the world as they battled it out for the biggest title in small-sided football. The venue for the Socca World Cup was the stadium in the Praça do Comércio, which had been built specially for this event. This square marks the centre of the vibrant capital city and is where all the matches in the tournament were held. The games were played on a half-size pitch – and on synthetic turf from Polytan.

An ice rink does not become “green” by not using electricity. For everything in our lives we need and consume electricity. The question facing Ice-World Ice-Business as a provider of emotional rinks for sports, leisure, recreation and health is as follows: how can we influence the genera tion of green energy, and how can we reduce the power consumption of our facilities?

Polytan created the “LigaTurf Socca” playing surface in conjunction with the International Socca Federation (ISF) specifically for this major event. This synthetic turf is custom-made and has smooth and textured filaments like the LigaTurf Cross system, although in this case they are green and blue. And this surface is likewise extremely robust and easy to maintain. Friedemann Söll, Head of Product Management & Marketing at Polytan, comments on “Liga Turf Socca”: “We are proud that our latest technological advances enable us to contribute to an event that brings so much pleasure to people across the world. Events of this kind show that sports events are moving increasingly from out-of-town stadiums into the inner cities and the big squares where they can reach spectators on an emotional level. We provide easy-to-install, temporary systems to cater for this clearly identifiable trend so that professional sport can be practised in such venues as well. And, needless to say, we are also taking the opportunity to demonstrate the numerous attributes of synthetic turf systems in Lisbon in conjunction with our partner ISF.” Christoph Koechy, who manages all the sponsorship activities around the World Cup, believes he is receiving the best possible support from Polytan and the “very best artificial turf you can get anywhere”. Polytan GmbH www.polytan.com 58

In terms of ice rink technology, Ice-World Ice-Business does not rely solely on the efficient aluminium system. All components installed in the rink system, including refrig eration units, supply lines, control units, materials, etc., are constantly being put to the test, improved and optimized. Today, ice rinks from Ice-World Ice-Business can be operated with around 40 per cent less energy than other systems available on the market. Thus Ice-World Ice-Business has significantly reduced energy consumption – and since environmental protection does not stop at the doorstep, Ice-World Ice-Business is investing in the production of green energy and in offsetting CO2 emissions. The current project is the planting of mangroves in the Myanmar Thor Heydahl Climate Park, to completely neutralize the 317 tons of carbon dioxide that all Ice-World ice rinks emitted during operation, material-manufacturing and transportation in the 2016/17 season. So far, 317 mangroves have been planted on behalf of Ice-World Ice-Business. These refor estations are monitored and guaranteed by the Worldview International Foundation. We need energy to live. We can not turn it off. Energy has to flow. And energy has to be clean. That’s green.

A UNIQUE FLOOR

NEW HOT SPOT FOR BASKETBALL

“Court 16” will lead as the most innovative tennis club in the United States. Its unparalleled concept of tailoring tennis to a wide range of age groups has now received an optimal flooring solution: the multifunctional LED flooring system by ASB GlassFloor, which fits perfectly into the training concept of “Court 16”. In 2014 Anthony Evrard opened its first flagship location. Born and raised in Brussels, owner and visionary Anthony Evrard brought an idea from Europe that was entirely new to the US – a tennis club for children in their formative years – ages 3 to 11.

A new centre for streetballers in Germany has sprung up in the Berlin Prenzlauer Berg district: the basketball courts in the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn sports park have been opened. The highlight of the facility is the covered main court under an outdoor hall by SMC2, which can be used all-season. All in all, three full-sized basketball courts with six modern, height-adjustable baskets and high-quality rubber flooring have been created. The covered main court is equipped with grandstands and floodlights. (Photo: © ALBA BERLIN 2018)

“Court 16’s” new Queens location will be the first tennis facility in the world to feature a glass floor tennis surfacing with proprietary LED lines. The customized surface by German manufacturer ASB GlassFloor provides the most cushioned surface to activate Court 16’s innovative tennis programme. The flooring helps reduce the risk of injury, providing the safest surface for children’s fast-growing joints and creating the ideal platform for players of all ages to play. ASB GlassFloor offers a patented solution with a glass flooring system for sports facilities in which integrated LEDs make an individual layout of the court possible for both adults and children. The company offers two different options. With ASB LumiFlex, the entire floor turns into a multi-media monitor, opening up completely new possibilities for sports venues, such as additional advertising opportunities and revenue. On the other hand, ASB Multi-Sports, the floor installed at “Court 16” Long Island City, uses LED game lines which allow you to switch between marking lines for different sports. In addition, these LED lights can change tennis court marking lines within seconds using a touch screen, and special markings have been integrated for individual exercises – the perfect solution for the requirements of the new Court 16 location. ASB GlassFloor www.asbglassfloor.com

Berlin’s senator for sports, Andreas Geisel, opened the facility on June 21, highlighting the cooperation with the youth department of ALBA BERLIN, which will be the key user in the future. The courts are now an additional training opportunity for sports clubs. However, they also provide a new opportunity for supervised and non-supervised basketball for residents and basketball players from all over Berlin.

sb 5/2018

The idea behind the project is to offer a freely accessible sports facility that can be used all-season and under all weather conditions, thus offering great potential for use. The outdoor hall above the main court fulfills exactly this objective: the glulam structure is covered with a textile membrane and protects the court from rain and snow. At the same time, the textile membrane is translucent, so no artificial lighting is needed during the day and players can play in consistent, natural light. In addition, the membrane offers a high level of thermal and acoustic comfort and thus guarantees an optimal playing experience. Finally, the outdoor hall made of wood and membrane is perfectly integrated in the environment, making the new facility in Prenzlauer Berg an attractive hot spot for basketball players. MELOS STONE – MY WAY!

BÜRGERPARK RECREATIONAL AREA

Floorcoverings are now available for clubs and real fans, perfectly shaped in colour and function. And even with logos, for those who want them.

Ever since the 1990s, an outdoor skatepark has been a steady component of the historic Bürgerpark recreation area on the harbour island of Saarbrücken. The small park was initially built from modular, precast concrete components. It is now being replaced by a 740 square metre skatepark with a state-of-the-art design at a different location within the Bürgerpark. The goal is to create an attractive space for kids, adolescents and adults, which also helps to revitalise the Bürgerpark. Initially, the historic Bürgerpark was built on the ruins of Saarbrücken’s destroyed coal harbour. It was planned as part of an ecologically-driven urban renewal scheme by Peter Latz from 1985 to 1989 and realized together with students and residents from the surrounding areas. In 1989, the 9-hectare area of the Bürgerpark was awarded the annual prize for landscape architecture by the German Landscape Architects Association (BDLA).

For clubs: You can give your stadium grounds, offices and museums a unique upgrade with a Melos Stone floorcovering. Those who’d like to be welcomed by their own club logo can also make this a reality with us. We can produce any motifs, signs, names and numbers by using the water. These motifs fit perfectly into the floorcovering. For fans: With Melos Stone, you can bring home your very own football club design. Melos Stone can be easily installed outside on terraces, in entrance areas or on connecting paths. The floor sets bright and visible colour accents, documenting long-term membership and loyalty to your club and team. Actually, all colour combinations including monochrome stone grey are possible. However, Melos Stone flooring isn’t as hard as the name would suggest: The granulate compound consists of elastic rubber that is almost as strong as non-slip as stone, thanks to its high material hardness (experts call it “90 Shore A”). On site, the loose granulates are mixed with an adhesive, applied to the floor and smoothed. For all those interested in technology: Melos Stone flooring consists of approx. 10 kg material per square metre and is non-slip, barrier-free, weatherproof, lightfast and even water-permeable! Melos Stone flooring is a true allrounder, and certainly a real eye-catcher for fans and clubs.

Melos GmbH www.melos-gmbh.com 60

Much like in the 1980s, the new skatepark project was marked by a high level of involvement of residents and future users. The skatepark planning agency LNDSKT (Landskate) from Cologne worked in close collaboration with architects Latz + Partner, the City of Saarbrücken, the Saar Skateboarding Association and park users on the development of the park design. The skateboard facility was embedded in an open plot of the existing recreation park, elegantly hugging the topography. Spectators and skateboarders taking a break can view the entire action in the skatepark from a raised part of the lawn. On hot days, pine trees and wild cherry trees provide shade. The street skateboarding park offers a broad range of elements that are closely modelled on urban architecture and street situations while matching the materials and colour scheme of the surrounding Bürgerpark. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

100TH WM MAMMOTH

Talent is not everything. Performance needs to be repeatedly confirmed and improved with consistent, intensive training. For this purpose, Bundesliga club Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV) has set up a youth development centre right next to the Volksparkstadion, the home of its professionals. Covering 4,600 m², the centre has sufficient space to include a school with boarding and day-care facilities, a canteen and cafeteria, offices, a conference area, and fitness and seminar rooms. Placing the centre right next to the well-known Volksparkstadion is a deliberate attempt to bring youth teams and professional footballers closer together.

In October 2015, WM ice technics, manufacturer of top-quality ice resurfacing machinery, presented their latest breakthrough: The WM Mammoth, a fully-electric ice resurfacing machine for standard ice rinks. And now, just three years on, the 100th WM Mammoth is leaving the production site of the South Tyrolean company. A success story beyond our wildest dreams. The WM Mammoth has won over clients in every corner of the world through, first and foremost, its efficiency and user-friendliness, along with its integrated edger, tilt-access engine compartment, quick-change system for rapid blade replacement and its fully-automated mode. The ice resurfacer features countless details that make work operations comfortable and safe. This has been confirmed not only by positive customer feedback, but also by type-testing carried out by Suva, Switzerland’s independent certification association. In creating the WM Mammoth, WM ice technics have achieved a new milestone in innovative design. In November 2017, when we presented the first fully-automated WM Mammoth Auto Drive, the company took a step into the future: Through its positioning system, the Mammoth Auto Drive can fully resurface an ice rink, even without a driver.

In order to transform youth payers into high-performance, skilful professionals, a range of training areas, besides football pitches, are needed to develop physical strength and fitness. One such area is the campus’s own fitness studio for targeted strength and endurance training. The floor required for this facility is everroll impact+, the elastic fitness flooring from the manufacturers BSW Berleburger Schaumstoffwerk GmbH. A total of 475 m² was laid in HSV’s development centre. The 400 m² training area and the 40-metre sprint track are visually distinguished by the colour of their respective wear layers. For casual outdoor training, a small pitch was installed on the roof of the development centre. Regupol kombi play was chosen for the playing surface here. This is an elastic, synthetic sports flooring consisting of two layers, for which installation and marking are carried out on site. Its high elasticity reduces the risk of injury from falls, while its compacted wear layer makes it an ideal surface for all ball games, in which the fun factor takes precedence over performance. WM ice technics is a market leader with resurfacing machinery. The company was founded in 1986 by machinist Willy Mulser and, despite its growth, it has remained a family company. Development, production and assembly all take place under one roof. WM ice technics are masters of innovation and, with their unceasing avant-garde developments, never fail to attract attention. The production range currently features four ice-resurfacing machines: The WM evo2 for ice ovals, the WM Mammoth and WM Mammoth Auto Drive for standard ice rinks, the WM Compact for small ice rinks and the WM Pinguino for mobile ice rinks.
