Editorial DEAR IAKS MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF SB, Of course, we are all looking forward to life within our communities returning to some sort of normality. We have been starved of training, participating, and watching the sports we all love. The slow and cautious return of sporting events has been welcome, but things are still a long way short of where we would like them to be.

their communities in a wide range of settings from country park to established, multi-venue complex at the heart of a capital city.

I was pleased to take part in the kick-off meeting of the IAKS Stadia and Arena Expert Circle online sessions last month. We were examining the complexities of bringing fans back to our stadiums, looking at the realities of getting people in, out, and around our v enues safely. We also looked at the constraints that social distancing puts on achievable capacities and the need to reconfigure back of house areas to create levels of separation between groups that have never been considered before. The session gave us the opportunity to share experiences and consider how, across the eight different countries represented, we are looking at next steps, ways to move through our current situation, and how our future venues might need to evolve.

The Modernization of Roland Garros S tadium, France sees a remodel the entire existing Roland-Garros stadium, and the construction of a new central operational and experiential hub.

The whitepaper on „Covid-secure venue planning“ in this issue gives an overview of the most important questions and offers first answers. For now, the projects being completed and delivered today were conceived long before any thoughts could conceive of needing to stay apart from one another. This issue of “sb” includes a wide range of venues, from stadia to arenas, training facil ities to community sports centres. A fascinating array of projects meeting the needs of

Lonza Arena in Visp, Switzerland is a new ice arena within an urban setting. The arena provides 5,000 spectators with prime views of the action on the ice.

The recently completed Rhythmic Gymnastics Palace Moscow at the Olympic Complex, Russia, can host a range of training events and competitions. The main floor has seating for 4,000 spectators on transformable tribunes and VIP boxes. Rod Laver Arena Redevelopment, Australia, sees a significant refurbishment and extension of the existing 30-year-old facility. The centre piece arena is able to host A ustralian Open centre court tennis as well as yearround concert and sporting events Finally, we see Brentford Community Stadium, UK. Built on a tight and awkward site, Brentford’s new 17,500 capacity home becomes the latest stadium to be built in London. Its interesting to see a mix of new build and refurbishment projects featured in these pages. I am sure you will find plenty of fascinating insight into a range of venue types in this magazine. VIRTUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND ELECTIONS

ELECTS ITS EXECUTIVE BOARD FOR 2020-2024

On August 14, IAKS Nordic held this year’s Ordinary General Assembly with 17 members participating. Esben Danielsen continues his presidency. For the next year, the other continuing members are Bjørn Aas, Daniel Glimvert and Marina Högland. Holger Kortbek (treasurer) has been re-elected, as well as Nils-Olof Zethrin, Flemming Overgaard and André Flatner. The IAKS Nordic Executive Board welcomes three new members: Lisa Watson, Monika Ölund and the first permanent board member from Finland, Jarkko Rantamäki.

IAKS Poland held its General Meeting at the head office of the National Olympic Committee in Warsaw on 14 September 2020. The newly elected president is Marcin Herra, who has already been a member of the Executive Board for the last two years. Together with former IAKS Poland President Zbigniew Klonowski (in office for 8 years), Robert Papis is now serving as vice president. Dariusz Maik continues his work on the Executive Board. Newly elected board members are Jacek Czauderna and Bogdan Kulczyński, who are in charge of the Revision Committee.

The new concept of the “Nordic Meetup” turns out to be succesful. More informal and online meetings, where the participants share experiences, current issues, and “network” to improve knowledge sharing and to get the most out of the membership for the welfare of all.

The IAKS Poland Executive Board is pleased to receive continued support from Polish National Olympic Committee President Andrzej Kraśnicki, who founded IAKS Poland 15 years ago and is its honorary president.

The partcipants defined six current and potential topics for future meetings: 1. Sustainability in sports and leisure facilities 2. Power structures in the context of lockdown (e.g. balancing between national legislation and guidelines vs recommendations from international organizations) 3. Future trends (e.g. padel tennis, E-sports, digital technologies/tools, tracking of activites, data analysis, simulations) 4. Sports hall of the future: characteristics. Interesting for the Swedish large scale project and for Träffpunkt Idrott ‘pop-up’ conference in February 2021. 5. Mapping of citizens’ needs – How to detect reliably and efficiently the citizens’ needs for sport activities, arenas and facilities? How to include the needs of minorities and the “silent” voices? 6. COVID-19: What are the long term effects of covid19 on peoples’ activity level and needs? Should we collaborate with researchers to map out any potential long term effects? Are there any researchers that have started already?

www.nordic.iaks.sport 4

Before the elections Zbigniew Klonowski reported on the association’s 2016-2020 activities. Members discussed the challenging situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for large sport arenas. Herra explained the plans for the upcoming term to acquire new members, to involve more companies and institutions, and to support and provide advice on new investments in sport and leisure infrastructure. The organization of the fourth InfraSPORT Congress is being continued.

GETTING READY FOR THE 2023 AFC ASIAN CUP INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL CENTRE IN XI’AN, CHINA The new Xi’an International Football Centre will be a 60,000-seat stadium for national and international matches as well as domestic league games, youth training academies, entertainment performances and cultural events. The centre will be located in Xi’an’s Fengdong New District with its stations on the city’s expanding metro network. With a population of nine million people and two professional football clubs, Xi’an will be a host city of the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in China. Taking its legacy mode of operations as the starting point of the design, the stadium has been designed to provide optimum conditions for football and maximise its use by generations after the 2023 tournament. The stadium’s open façades invite the city into the heart of the building to enjoy its public spaces, recreation and dining facilities throughout the day. Located in a series of shaded south-facing garden terraces with views over the city to Qing Mountain, these amenities will also serve spectators visiting the stadium during football matches, cultural events and performances. The sweeping lines of the façade protect the stadium from northerly winds and match the fluid forms of the roof that shelters the saddle-shaped seating bowl maximising the spectator seating provided at midfield. Solutions for all weather conditions The design employs an ultra-lightweight long span cable-net roof structure, resulting in a minimum load and 10

material footprint that in turn reduces the stadium’s primary structure. Wide perimeter roof overhangs shelter facilities within the building’s envelope while the large, shaded, open-air terraces and public concourses incorporate extensive planting on all levels, providing comfortable conditions in Xi’an’s hot continental summer climate. Supported by the tensioned cable-net structure, a translucent membrane over the seating protects spectators from inclement weather and direct sunlight while also allowing the maximum quantity of natural light to reach the playing surface, promoting the growth of grass on the pitch to provide playing conditions of the highest standard. Digital modelling has defined the geometry of the spectators’ seating bowl in order to optimise proximity and views to the field of play from all 60,000 seats, generating an exciting atmosphere for football and ensuring an outstanding match experience for all players and spectators.

FOOTBALL LABORATORY AND FAN DESTINATION SOUTH KOREA NATIONAL FOOTBALL CENTRE IN SEOUL Commissioned by the Korean Football Association (KFA), the new National Football Centre will not only become home to the Korean national team and its trainers, but also a laboratory for future generations of top league players, helping to foster their careers. For the development of the masterplan, UNStudio teamed up with Amsterdam’s Johan Cruijff ArenA and gathered together an international team of leading football stadium managers, alongside specialists in sports science and digital data collection. At the new National Football Centre (NFC) – located on a 450,427 m² site in Cheonan-shi, Chungnam-do – the women’s team and youth teams share the facilities with the men’s national team. The youth training facilities are designed to cultivate top league players. However, the centre is also intended to become an attractive destination for football fans who can enjoy the story of Korean football and use the facilities in order to fully tap into the energy of the league. Based on the latest findings of sports science and data technology, the NFC will feature two stadiums and over a dozen sports field typologies, natural-grass running tracks and indoor gymnasiums. These facilities will be closely linked to the numerous specialist sports medics and treatment centres. Digital technology has permeated sport, allowing coaches, management and health care services to track the 12

progress and development of sports programmes. Digital technology will be discreetly integrated into the built environment for data collection related to the user’s health, activity, time and schedule allocation, in addition to other biometrics. The focal point of the masterplan will be the central public plaza, located at the heart of the complex. Here, three primary pieces of architecture – the museum, the indoor stadium and the outdoor stadium – will frame a public pedestrian area that houses restaurants, shops and a variety of (semi-)public sports facilities. With its tiered landscape, the large plaza can also host multifunctional events throughout the year.

SOCIAL CAMPUS FOR THE CITY MULTIPURPOSE ARENA IN JIHLAVA, CZECH REPUBLIC The construction of Jihlava Multipurpose Arena, due to begin in 2021 and end in 2023, will build on the city’s existing hockey stadium, a deteriorating indoor sporting arena built in 1956, and expand it into a four-building multifunctional centre bringing together an adaptable ice rink, a rooftop running track and a gym as well as a sports academy, hospitality establishments and shops. Hosting both regional sporting and cultural events, the completed structure will act as a public platform open to a variety of audiences for a diverse range of activities. The new structure unfolds into four distinct buildings, two of which already exist, connected by open-air walkways and green spaces. While the existing rectangular stadium is undergoing full reconstruction and the sports academy is being maintained as a key element of the site, they are both being refurbished to host new functional ities and better blend into the overall environment and its signature aesthetic. At the heart of the project, the architects are erecting a spacious new arena: a monumental structure, its materials and forms reflect the city’s Baltic origins – a reference likewise mirrored in the triangle-patterned façades of the various refurbished and new buildings in the complex. The oval arena is structurally conceived as a versatile space: the interior space, provided with the necessary complex technical equipment, serves at once as a hockey rink, exhibitions and events hall, and concert venue, complemented by an indoor gym. On its roof is an outdoor track. 14

Placed at an intersection, the elevated pedestrian-friendly structure of the hospitality building invites visitors into the complex by allowing them to view the full environment from the street. Combining a restaurant, hotel, gym and office spaces, it is exclusively dedicated to enriching visitors’ multifaceted experience of the complex and ensures the connection with the neighbouring sports venue. Beyond an events-based site, Jihlava Multipurpose Arena is an everyday space, an urban sporting, cultural and social campus for visitors to the arena, athletes, students of the academy and university, and the general public. As the four buildings’ complementary and interconnected functions contribute to this, they share a distinct red met al grid façade, formed by apposed triangles.

POLISHED GEMSTONE LASK ARENA IN LINZ, AUSTRIA The tradition-steeped Upper Austrian club LASK is delighted with the innovative design and the capacity of the multifunctional arena in the provincial capital of Linz. RAUMKUNST’s timeless, authentic design has created a distinctive arena that impresses with its efficiency, functionality and sustainability while generating added value for the entire public. The repositioning of the arena permits a compact, closed structure with steeply banked tiers close to the pitch, offering space and unrestricted sight lines for around 20,000 spectators. The home stand in the west as a continuous wall of fans with standing room for more than 4,500 acts like a megaphone that defines the atmosphere within the stadium. Nevertheless, the new arena remains a considerate neighbour. The building‘s elegantly tapered body creates sufficient distance to the adjacent residential areas, and its metal shell shields the outside world from the stadium atmosphere. This not only creates a visual reduction in height, but also makes the arena recognisable and gives it an identity with the aid of the slats that break through the surface that recall the LASK stripes. Attractive functional location with added value for all Before and after an exciting evening of football, the fan meeting area with its externally accessible hospitality garden is a welcome relaxation area. On the way to the 16

stands, which is barrier-free throughout, visitors can stop off at numerous theme kiosks, the fan shop or the LASK Museum. Three premium levels, 42 boxes with grandstand seats in front and two event boxes with outdoor terraces and dia gonal views of the arena enhance the quality of the football evening. The ancillary room zones have bars, restaurants and clubs providing an all-round service not only during events but also independently of them. Family-friendly „Club 100“ as an exercise room with sports opportunities for children provides a direct view of the football stars before and after the match due to its location next to the players‘ tunnel, while also being open on matchfree days. A family grandstand is marked by convenient routing and short distances and makes the stadium visit an exciting experience for the whole family.

VENUE READINESS A GLOBAL APPROACH TO COVID-SECURE VENUE PLANNING Author and Photos:

Populous, UK – SW15 2NU London, www.populous.com

The global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have produced one of the greatest challenges to affect the whole of society in a generation. While people from around the world are coming to terms with the health, economic and social ramifications of the virus, many businesses in the sports and entertainment industry are taking unprecedented steps to make their venues Covid-secure and start planning to welcome supporters back once again. From our global experience and round table discussions with regulators, governmental bodies, owners, and operators, this article outlines the key areas and strategies that we have seen within the industry and seeks to shed light on what the future might look like for Covid-secure sports venues around the world. Flexible scenario planning From the beginning of the pandemic, with some areas hit in late 2019, it was immediately clear that any reopening and business solution for venues would require full stakeholder engagement. Even before reaching the specific needs of your own venue, it is essential to take the following into account:

“This is very much an issue of immediate risk assessment,” says Sherri Privitera, Populous Senior Principal and Americas regional board member. “While we are seeing some leagues open to a small number of fans, others have called off the whole season. As designers we can help those who make these really big decisions see their specific situation in the light of their current national health and government guidelines.”

• recommendations from national and international health bodies; • guidelines from local and national government; • future risks, as yet unknown.

As well as differences from town to town, things can also change quickly within a location, according to Populous Senior Principal and EMEA sector lead Mark Craine. “The UK Government is making national and regional decisions based on the data that is changing right in front of them. This means that while we can prepare everything in advance for one scenario, a sudden change will often mean that a full reassessment is required in a short period of time. Having multiple options and advanced scenario planning while also developing time saving strategies and tools has been key supporting venues in this new constantly changing environment.”

Almost every league, federation, or event around the world has adopted an approach to spectator and fan safety in the face of this global pandemic. However, as the virus spreads at different rates around the world, from town to town and continent to continent, so the specific approach will change dependent on location but also over time. 18

sb 5/2020

Venues can implement socially distant queuing lines with stanchions and floor markers. Fans could be notified in-app of their entry time and gate location with an alert when it is their group‘s time to enter. Digital signage would announce which group is currently being welcomed at that gate.

Reinforcing pre-purchase communication in the venue is key. Friendly and approachable signage and wayfinding can help build fans’ confidence and ease their anxiety. Show and tell any efforts taken around sanitization, rules and regulations for fans.

Health & safety While always a key consideration for stadiums around the world, creating a safe and Covid-secure environment is now a vital requirement for every venue, be it large or small, sporting or otherwise. Stadiums are incredibly tactile spaces and considering the specification of materials that limit the potential for viruses to linger on surfaces will be vital in all return to venue plans. This will naturally also be linked to enhanced cleaning and maintenance regimes, that will operate before, during and after matches.

taining all of a stadium’s internal Covid-secure policies and processes. “This is going to be a really important space for every venue,” says Chris Paterson, Populous Senior Principal in the APAC region. “Physical safety and security have long been a priority at stadiums around the world, and a lot of work has gone into making these spaces safe as well as welcoming. Whatever the c apacity of a stadium going forwards, the temporary overlay of these spaces to meet these new immediate needs is going to be crucial in safeguarding all attendees.”

Upon arrival, all visitors are likely to be met with a range of health testing procedures. From “health passports” linked to digital ticketing to digital thermometers, the entrance to a venue will be a vital threshold to protecting and main-

home. Public transport and road restrictions may affect every individual and must be addressed with the relevant authorities prior to any event. Around the world, most stadiums will use a multi-modal transport strategy, with a range of different providers from private individuals to trains and buses, to get fans to the venue. Meanwhile, the technological advancement that we have seen in stadiums over the past decade has made it e asier for them to quickly adapt as venues plan for some fans to return, often at reduced capacities and with stringent health and safety measures in place. Digital wayfinding systems, ticketless entry, and cashless transaction systems have all been put to use as we find ways that grounds around the world can begin to zone their stadiums, to serve all the needs of fans whilst allowing for social distancing and limiting physical touch points during their venue visit. The key priority for all venues, then, must be in keeping people moving and avoiding queues. Techniques to achieve this could include: 20

• using targetted temperature screening at entrances to minimise queues into the stadium; • retaining all toilet fixtures to minimise queues in toilets; • additional options for click and collect or delivery to seat for food and beverages in concourses. Restarting, reopening and adapting One similarity that can be seen around the world as venues plan for the future is the need for bespoke solutions. While approaches can be adopted in common, solutions need to be tailored to fit each and every case – and need to have back-up built in. As Al Baxter, Populous Principal in APAC tells us, every client and venue will need a range of possible solutions. “We have seen so many nuanced requirements come out of the hundreds of meetings that we have had with our contacts as they prepare to reopen into this ‘new normal’,” Baxter says. “While many of these needs can be grouped together, the design solution is anything but homogenous.” And change comes quickly. For example, an extensive and thoroughly evaluated plan on Friday may be made sb 5/2020

By adding temporary partitions and simple drink-rail overlays, this new seating product can be installed with minimal modifications to the venue. Above right: Communication is key to setting expectations with fans and making them more comfortable. Fans want to know what to expect, and what wellness measures are being taken before they decide to purchase tickets. r edundant come game day on Sunday should local circumstances or national guidelines change. “We always knew that people in our business were resilient,” says Scott Capstack, Principal in the Americas region, “but we have seen first-hand some incredibly clever and strategic approaches to ensure that fans and spectators remain safe and secure, from the moment they arrive at a venue until the moment they leave.” Venues within a venue The longer that the pandemic affects all areas of the sporting world, the clearer it seems that venue operators are going to have to be flexible on both their capacities and their strategies for moving people around the internal and external spaces of their buildings. Stadiums are designed for people, whether it is 5,000 or 100,000. There is an experience in being in a stadium, in close proximity to thousands of other fans, that is perhaps unique to sports and entertainment. The atmosphere of this environment is key. But how do you replicate this when the capacity is 30%, 20%, or even lower? The goal of the “venue within a venue” approach is to work with governmental guidelines and tracking and tracing guidelines to create a “stadium” experience whilst limiting contact between fans before, during, and after matches. As Tom Jones, Senior Principal in the EMEA region notes “This sb 5/2020

builds on our current approach of designing a range of spaces and experiences into stadiums, so we have already been able to identify many situations where all of the concessions and hospitality spaces within a stadium can be made accessible to smaller groups through strategic and digital wayfinding and temporary barriers. Conclusion All surveys point to keen demand to return to live sport, however governments are understandably cautious about the public health issues relating to the safety of groups of people meeting in stadiums. Hopefully the feedback and analysis of test events around the world can help to give confidence that stadiums can start to welcome fans back to venues in a safe and controlled way, with suitable protocols and procedures that can give confidence to players, officials and spectators. One key question will be which of the changes that are required to respond to this pandemic are temporary, or whether they will be a marker for more permanent changes in the design and operation of stadiums. Naturally, there will be many more changes before we reach the end of this pandemic, but it will be interesting to see when crowds are welcomed back without restrictions, whether the in-stadium experience will look very different to how it was before? 21

TOP VENUE GETS DRAMATIC NEW IDENTITY ROD LAVER ARENA IN MELBOURNE

Rod Laver Arena, originally designed in 1988 by COX, is one of the top entertainment venues in the world by ticket sales and attendance levels, averaging more than 200 event days annually. 32 years later, for the redevelopment, COX considered important the design of the new public spaces and striking Eastern Annex, working to enhance the arena‘s identity and image, providing new entry points and access to the expanded concourse, retail offerings and amenities. The introduction of a retractable rail system increased seating capacity while allowing greater stage width, flexibility and configuration. The rigging structure is capable of supporting 100 tonnes. The redevelopment applied four key design principles. The first embeds the arena within the precinct, opening connections to the wider ground plane and surrounding parkland and open spaces. The second elevates the back-ofhouse areas in a way that maintains and improves capacity in an ever-evolving major event landscape. The third introduces the idea of new town squares, adding to public engagement and establishing the arena as a true place for the

people. The final principle ensures a contextual echoing of the original design, with curves begetting curves, ensuring that new built elements enhance and uplift existing structures. The project can be understood in two elements, the first an upgrade to existing arena facilities – the “apparatus” of the place, and the second encompassing public realm and new built additions. sb 5/2020

Australian Open 2020 welcomed a record-breaking 812,174 people The seating bowl at the arena’s heart has been improved and enhanced, its capacity maximised and accessibility increased, which also allows greater stage width and flexibility. Increasing the roof rigging load to 100 tonnes by utilising a new permanent truss vastly reduces time, cost and visual impact on sightlines. Extensive back-of-house modifications extended the loading dock to accommodate up to 21 semi-trailers simultaneously, ensuring the arena’s ability to attract the world’s biggest touring acts to Australia. Plug-in pods Designed to float above the pedestrian concourse, the new Eastern Annex delivers a dramatic new identity. A sculpted, human-scaled pod links a new public entry and retail frontages to the perimeter of the existsb 5/2020

ing building. Above, the curved form constructed from steel frame, concrete and glass façade cladding contains new player/patron dining and lounge facilities. Touching the existing structure lightly, its sculpted form is connected by bridges to the arena via a lightfilled atrium space, allowing vertical circulation and natural light. To create a continuous and appropriate architectural language across all built additions and achieve harmony with the original architecture, the idea of contemporary pod additions that “plug“ into the existing structure were incorporated. The design of the pod and pavilion façades is distinctive, incorporating elements representing themes of context, climate and configurability. With a high-performance stretched, clear double-glazed skin, the buildings are conceived as extruded prisms enveloped by a tautly stretched surface. 23

LEED Gold® Certification The certification recognises the design measures taken to support the arena’s commitment to environmental responsibility. These measures included macro site-planning initiatives such as ensuring excellent connectivity to public transport and the incorporation of innovative wastewater technologies, to more technical elements such as the selection of roof materials that reflect heat rather than absorbing and re-radiating it, therefore reducing the urban heat island effect. The team embedded Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles throughout the design of the upgrade 24

from its inception, ensuring that sustainability was prioritised within a context of existing thirty-year-old building fabric, dated services, and a vast internal volume. The venue is also committed to improving guest experience through environmental stewardship using LEED and achieved certification by implementing s pecific initiatives and sustainability metrics. These include 26.9 % total energy cost saving, 17.7 % reduction in gas usage and 20 % reduction in water usage, including an 81.83 % reduction in potable water usage. sb 5/2020

FLUTTERING GYMNASTICS RIBBON IRINA VINER-USMANOVA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS PALACE IN MOSCOW Located inside the Luzhniki complex (Moscow’s central sports area and venue of the 1980 Summer Olympics), the Rhythmic Gymnastics Palace is dedicated to rhythmic gymnastics competitions of different levels and other sports and recreational activities. The design by Creative Production Union PRIDE was inspired by the waving of a gymnastics ribbon. The arena for competitions, both on the national and international level, training halls, medical unit, hostel and spa for athletes, administration offices, amenity spaces – all this is gathered under a single roof in a simple cubic volume. This neat shape has made it possible to locate all the necessary functions on a relatively compact site. In turn, the competition arena can be transformed into a multifunctional hall for all kinds of events. The sports facility has space for 4,000 spectators.

Undulating form The roof of the complex is reminiscent of a gymnastics ribbon. The undulating form starts, at its peak, with a vertical wall in the east and gradually loses amplitude towards the west. The rest of the wave lies right above the heart of the palace, the arena, and subsides above training halls. Although the idea for this dramatic image associated with rapid movement came up right at the beginning of concept development, it took some time to find a shape sb 5/2020

stages of the design phase and an enhancement of the quality of the documentation.

The main challenge was to realise the ambitious idea of a bold, undulating shape, and in a very short time. The most eye-catching part of the building, its roof, became also the most demanding. Besides the ribbon’s ambitious geometry, the materials capable of fulfilling the task also had to be found.

“During the initial stage, we created a preliminary concept rather quickly, consisting of several completely different solutions, such as extraordinary forms, or a more geometric appearance maintaining a clear rhythm of the façade. The customer chose the form of a ribbon fluttering above the ground. We were able to develop the first 3D model in less than a month,” says chief architect of the Pride company, Elena Myznikova.

The versatility of the open BIM approach Right from the concept stage, the project was developed using open BIM in a real application using software solutions from the Nemetschek Group portfolio. Despite the large number of programs used during the project, the open BIM workflow enabled a consistent process, the detection of design errors in the early 28

Most of the concept phase was dedicated to the optimisation of the roof frame and the layout of the decking and eaves cassettes. A variety of cassette shapes and sizes was tested, and in the end, the universal one – the triangle – was chosen. sb 5/2020

ARCHITECTURAL AND VISUAL COHERENCE MODERNISATION OF THE HISTORIC TRIANGLE OF STADE ROLAND GARROS The new stadium has 18 competition courts compared to 20 before and increased its seating capacity by 2,500. The design team at Chaix & Morel et Associés have conceived an airy complex, on a human scale where buildings and infrastructures meet current and future needs. The aim was to provide functional and comfortable spaces, both for the public during the tournament and throughout the year for the teams. The omnipresence of plants was reinforced to give visitors the sensation of a „green walk“ while strolling at the facility. The stadium is home of the legendary international tournament, a sports event with worldwide media coverage that welcomes more than 400,000 visitors during the competition fortnight. The real challenge of the operation was to carry out the work without interrupting the use of the stadium for the French Open. Each year, throughout the duration of the project, the project management and construction teams must have completely closed the site by the end of March: cranes dismantled, the ac-

commodation bungalows evacuated, excavations backfilled. As the tournament is broadcasted all over the world, no trace of the site should disturb the t elevision images. Then, each year, at the end of June, when the tournament is over, the teams resume work where they left off. To provide quality spaces where the proposed contemporary architecture is in keeping with the established image of the tournament, the sb 5/2020

legendary elements of the village and the site are used again – the extensive use of timber at ground level, planted terraces that evoke hanging gardens, large white canopies, dapper furniture, sleek signage. Village square Home to the public relations village, the new administration building is now a key element of the stadium midway between the two centre courts, an assembly of six refined volumes in pairs, offset and located at different heights. This fragmentation projects an impression of pavilions within a park. Like a theatre, the village is organised in three sequences: lounges built in “terraces” like stands, the central space identical to a parterre opens towards the staged site. The whole is planned around an 880 m² “village square”, planted with three magnificent pines. sb 5/2020

Located on two levels, the adjoining spaces form an amphitheatre reminiscent of Italian renaissance thea tre boxes, where people come to see and be seen. The private terraces of each lounge have a direct view of the village square. This approach unites the existing qualities of conviviality, hospitality and functionality (former village) and provides additional commercial and event spaces that enable it to maintain its reputation and international attractiveness, while reinforcing the “Roland Spirit”. Visual and acoustic contact In the south, the village opens onto courts 7 and 9 through a very large 28 m by 8 m high “window” which facilitates visual and auditory contact with the tennis matches from the terraces. The change in level between the stands of the adjoining courts and the 31

village square makes it possible to reconcile VIP privacy and the players’ concentration. The exterior galleries around the atrium are secured by balustrades with a wooden handrail and translucent balustrade infill made of X-TEND by Carl Stahl Architecture. The filigree stainless steel mesh looks lightweight and delicate, and thus fits in perfectly with the architecture of the building. X-TEND provides secure support in spite of its lightweight floating appearance. Trellis structure for green plants The heavily planted pavilion roofs provide an exceptional space accessible to guests. In total, more than 2,320 m² of the village is devoted to outdoor spaces (timber decks and planted spaces), all readi ly accessible. X-TEND by Carl Stahl Architecture is used also as filigree ball netting, which greenery can climb, and also as a trellis structure to help create individual green walls. The stainless steel mesh gives the concrete walls a natural appearance. With a simple design, easy to plan and straightforward to assemble, the lightweight and filigree greenery systems are perfect 32

for different types of façades and plants. As optimal trellis structures, they enable expanses of green in all sizes. A modular system of individual parts coordinated with one another forms the basis of flexible design opportunities and creative ideas – weatherproof, durable and low- maintenance. Architectural language The same architectural language that mixes the sober small pavilion volume, enamelled glass and stainless-steel mesh is used throughout the site and on new structures for architectural and visual coherence (Village, Boulevard d‘Auteuil access, operations post – security control, Fonds des Princes access, Nord principal access, museum, shop). The refurbishment and extension address present-day, social issues including how to r enovate our heritage and improve a site at this scale while respecting the environment in terms of landscape, sustainability, all with c onsideration for its neighbours. The project improves the landscape and public space. sb 5/2020

DESIGNED FOR EVERYONE COMMUNITY STADIUM IN BRENTFORD The new 17,250-capacity Brentford Community Stadium for Brentford FC is located less than a mile from the club’s previous home. AFL Architects retains the intimacy and familiarity of the older venue while future-proofing the club for its potential promotion to the Premier League. The delivered design drives forward a new model for the future – a medium-capacity stadium with almost 2,000 premium seats, joint-tenancy and a sustainable player base. The facilities have been designed for both football and rugby use (London Irish RFC). By providing a joint venue, the stadium is built on a foundation of commercial viability. London Irish RFC will also be able to attract a larger supporter base within its original home catchment area. The challenge of implementing joint branding for both clubs has been met through simple yet highly effective means. Lighting t hroughout the concourses can be changed quickly from red to green. The lounges also retain a neutrality while being unmistakeably unique to Brentford Stadium – a hexagonal motif appears throughout the interiors, both referencing The Bees and the angular venue itself. Seat colouration is not club-specific. Rather, it has been modelled out to produce the illusion of a stadium at full capacity. Originally designed

for the benefit of broadcasted matches, the impact of the pandemic has further supported the use of this technique when reduced numbers of fans return to the stadium under social-distancing regulations. Efficient marketing Hospitality options were modelled out together with the club’s financial, marketing and catering teams to provide a wide range of offers, targeted to precise demographics. This involved creating schedules and models detailing occupation ratios, views from lounges and quality benchmarking to realistic targets. The success of this study has meant that the club targeted sales early and almost sold out their hospitality months before completion. sb 5/2020

Influenced by a uniquely shaped site The tight, triangular nature of the site and its dramatic effect on the stadium footprint is a clear motif throughout the design. Triangular forms are found throughout the hospitality areas, in the shape of the floodlights and roof, and within the massing itself. Externally, the aluminium façade plays with size and tone. The effect is of a less industrial, broken up massing and a varied texsb 5/2020

PERFECT VIEW OF THE ICE LONZA ARENA ICE HOCKEY HALL IN VISP The new Lonza Arena building fills a gap in the urban fabric in the municipality of Visp. With a total area of 5,700 m² and a building height of 15 m, the ice and event hall blends harmoniously into its surroundings. Its east-west orientation parallel to the main road and its recessed façade create outdoor spaces and forecourt zones. Since its official opening in September 2019, the EHC Visp ice hockey club in the canton of Valais has had a new home venue that satisfies the requirements of the Swiss League for the two top divisions while also serving as an event hall. The Lonza Arena can accommodate 5,000 people, 2,000 of them seated. The ice rink is also available for public ice skating. The new building has been erected near the old ice rink. The ground-level, light-flooded circulation area benefits from the transparent shell and gains its space from the raised grandstand above it. The centrally positioned grandstand body forms the building‘s core, and its ice surface is kept at ground level. The spectator area is divided into four sectors; the standing areas are located at the ends, while the seating areas are alongside the ice surface. The ice rink can hold 5,000 spectators. All seats have a perfect view of the ice thanks to the raising of the first tier of stands.

The sepa rate fan access for sports events can be regulated here via the eastern entrance zone. Nine changing rooms are available, the largest belonging to EHC Visp‘s first team with sanitary facilities and massage and fitness rooms. Food can be served at seven outlets in the stadium; the catering facilities also include a fondue parlour. The roof of the hall is equipped with a photovoltaic system. The outer concrete columns merge the two volumes into one. The perforation of the aluminium shell in front of the building admits light to the functional rooms behind it, creating reciprocal relations between inside and outside. SMOOTH RUNNING THANKS TO STRONG CONTRASTS POLYTAN REKORTAN SYNTHETIC SURFACE FOR ILVESHEIM CASTLE SCHOOL Author Photos

Tobias Müller, Polytan GmbH, DE - 86666 Burgheim, www.polytan.de Andreas Keller Fotografie

It is usually referred to only as the „blind school“. The correct designation is: Castle School Ilvesheim – State special educational and consulting centre with boarding school, with a focus on vision. Here, some of the sports facilities were renovated in autumn 2019 and an outdoor racetrack was installed using a Rekortan M sports surface from Polytan. It offers excellent acceleration performance and tread elasticity, and is the perfect choice for school sports facilities. It is particularly significant in Ilvesheim because of the colours. Bright blue on both sides, and bright yellow in the middle. For this reason, the surface is also lovingly called the „Ikea track“ by the pupils – in reference to the Swedish furniture company‘s logo. However, the choice of colour is no coincidence. It is due to the fact that the combination of blue and yellow forms the strongest contrast perceptible to the human eye, more so even than black and white, and is therefore still perceptible to people with significantly impaired vision. If they can see „Ikea“ in Ilvesheim, they are on the right track. Even totally blind people use the track „Of course, this requires some practice,“ explains Jessica Bahr, teacher at the SBBZ, who accompanies the runners and literally keeps them on a short leash. As their experience grows, runners successfully get round the track unaided, because it has a slight incline on the inside and 38

outside. This means that the runner immediately notices when he deviates from the centre lane and can adjust to get back on track. It is important that the track is completely level, with a smooth transition to the adjacent pitch, and that there are no tripping hazards, such as holes, grass growth or moss. This is precisely why the previous track had to be replaced – it had already been closed for a long time for safety reasons. This was a great disappointment to the pupils, because the SBBZ is a school with a distinct sports profile that primarily wants to convey the joy of movement to children and young people. This is not necessarily a matter of course for blind and visually impaired people, who are more cautious about movement due to the constant danger of colliding with obstacles and injuring themselves. In Ilvesheim, targeted support starts early with appropriate sb 5/2020

movement exercises to strengthen the back and neck muscles, develop stability and generally promote the enjoyment of movement. The newly laid round oval gives pupils the opportunity to run longer distances without problems. Training track for national players In addition to school sports, SBBZ also offers a branch of competitive sports – with considerable success: Goal ball is the most popular ball sport for visually impaired people and the school boasts a few national players. Their aim is to participate in the next Paralympics. They use the round oval for fitness and endurance training. Rekortan M‘s high load-bearing capacity also allows school wheelchair users to race laps on the newly laid track without causing damage. During planning, the dispersal of surface water presented a particular challenge, as Rekortan M is waterproof. In the sb 5/2020

absence of any standards, a bespoke solution had to be found for this. The result: A channel was installed directly under the centre of the track, through which water can drain, however it has been completely covered so that it does not pose a trip hazard for the runners. The previous surface was equipped with hollow compartments so that the runners could hear whether they were still in the lane or had already deviated from it unintentionally. However, this acoustic guide was unsuccessful. The surface was also water-permeable and there were cracks along the hollow compartments. The track‘s ruggedness and its colour scheme convinced the planners in Ilvesheim to also renew the long jump system with the same sports surface – naturally also in the blue-yellow colour combination.

MORE THAN JUST A SPORTS VENUE NEW FLOODLIGHTS AT “LA BOMBONERA” AND AT OPEL ARENA Author Photos

Thorn Brand Management Thorn Lighting, www.thornlighting.com

Sports affect us emotionally, captivate us and significantly contribute to that passion and excitement. Light in this matter, not only provides visibility and clarity. It also enhances the entertainment factor, stimulates enthusiasm and emotions for players, officials and, of course, the fans – those present at the venue, as well as those watching on TV at home. So naturally light is an integral part of today’s sports venues. From the field of play to dynamic facades and dramatic light shows – good colour rendition, flicker free -broadcasting and proper uniformity are key enablers for successful sporting events. Most football stadiums are far more than sports venues. That is certainly true of Estadio Alberto J. Armando, the home ground of the Argentinian football club Boca Ju niors. In 2019, the stadium affectionately called “La Bombonera” or “The Chocolate Box” for its distinctive shape was in need of a new floodlight system. The club also wanted to invest in a solution that would enable dynamic and static lighting scenarios for various events as well as provide television viewers and fans with clear super slow-motion images for a second opinion of crucial plays. 248 Altis floodlights from Thorn were selected for the task. Equipped with three tiltable modules, the high-powered 5700K LED luminaires provide top-quality illumination with uniform distribution in a variety of lighting design optimisations. Their colour rendering of CRI > 80 and

flicker free operation more than fulfils the parameters required for HDTV broadcasting. 248 remotely installed LED gearboxes were used to fully integrate all the floodlights with an RDM-based DMX lighting control system. It en ables static as well as dynamic lighting effects in real time, also customisable, pre-programmed scenarios – all with a simple tablet. High-powered floodlights for 1. FSV Mainz 05 From one future-proof solution to the next – in late spring of 2019, Thorn was tasked with the installation of a new LED floodlight system and main stand lighting addition at the Opel Arena, home of the 1. FSV Mainz 05 football club. The progressive lighting upgrade, which was implemented as a turnkey solution, fulfils the raised requirements for the German Football League (DFL) as well as UEFA Elite Level A. Following the contract signing in June 2019, Thorn experts got right to work in designing a high quality, future-proof lighting installation. Forming the backbone are 220 high- powered Thorn Altis floodlights, all of which together easi ly exceed the new illuminance level requirements of the German Football League for the 2019/2020 season. The brilliant colour rendering (CRI 86, TLCI > 80), uniform light distribution and flicker free operation make the 5700K LEDs ideal for HDTV broadcasting. They also support super slow-motion camera images. In addition, 163 Aquaforce Pro moisture and dust-resistant luminaires were installed to provide additional brightness to the stand lighting system. CLIMATE-FRIENDLY AND SUSTAINABLE ARTIFICIAL TURF POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS TAKING THE EXAMPLE OF THE OLYMPIA SPORTS COMPLEX IN ROTTERDAM Author Images

Rolf Haas, info@sportsystemehaas.de MET, FieldTurf Tarkett SAS, www.fieldturf.com

The Olympia sports complex is a pilot project for climate-friendly and sustainable artificial turf. FieldTurf has already installed six large pitches and three small pitches there, and an 800 m² small pitch will follow in October 2020. In the design of this pilot project, account has been taken of tomorrow’s recycling. Humans are affecting the climate through their use of fossil fuels, the deforestation of rainforests, and intensive livestock farming and other forms of agriculture. This increases the output of greenhouse gases enormously and thus spurs global warming. The main sources are CO2 (63%), followed by methane (19%) and nitrous oxide (6%). The Mauna Loa reference station in Hawaii measured a CO2 concentration of 405 ppm in 2017. This is the highest CO2 concentration in over 800,000 years. The critical threshold of global warming is an increase of 2° Celsius over the average temperature in pre-industrial times. In 2016, the global air temperature was already 0.94°C higher than the average in the 20th century.1 Climate protection is intended to mitigate and, if possible, prevent global warming. The focus is on reducing anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Circular economy and sustainability The circular economy entails production in closed cycles. It demands the development of products that can be reused. After use, the raw materials should not be lost 42

to landfill or incineration, but returned to the economic cycle. „We must not consume the future. What we need is a sustainable policy that safeguards the basis of life and life chances for future generations“.² Fibre material from petroleum, renewable resources or plastic waste? Today, polyethylene (PE) is the standard material for artificial turf fibres. It is obtained from fossil raw m aterials such as petroleum and natural gas. Its low cost is offset by the consumption of fossil resources and the high burden of CO2 on the environment. PE can also be obtained from renewable raw materials such as sugar cane, palm oil and wood waste. This bioethanol is more climate-friendly; however, in Asia and South America, rainforests are felled in some cases in order to create land for agricultural cultivation. A sustainable solution could be chemical recycling. A pyrolysis process is used to obtain pyrolysis oil from plastic waste. ---------------------------------------------------------------1 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2 Sustainability study of the German Federal Government (11/2014, page 5) sb 5/2020

Worn turf is rolled up.

ProMax HydroFlex is used as granulate on the new artificial turf pitch.

Polymers from recycled turf are mixed with our new high-grade polymers.

The plastic waste is heated in the absence of oxygen. The resultant pyrolysis oil is of the same quality as PE from fossil fuels. A major advantage is a significantly lower CO2 output from the production and disposal of the artificial turf: • Conventional artificial turf fibre made from petroleum with a latex coating: 25.82 kg/m² • Fibres from renewable resources with a latex coating: 2.7 kg/m² • Fibres from chemically recycled plastic waste with a polymer coating: 0.2 kg/m² Another benefit is the conservation of fossil resources. Chemical recycling is also an important contribution to the recycling of plastic waste. Olympia sports complex in Rotterdam The newly planned sports complex in Rotterdam will be used for new housing and recreation and sports areas. FieldTurf has now installed six large pitches and three small pitches there. In October 2020, FieldTurf will install another small pitch of around 800 m² as a pilot project on the subject of „climate-friendly and sustainable artificial turf“. The Rotterdam pilot project makes use of the revolutionary CORE artificial turf fibre technology. The CORE fibre consists of a highly elastic core for optimal fibre recovery and a sheath with very high abrasion resistance and low skin friction for a pleasant feel on the skin and high durability. sb 5/2020

Artificial turf carpet is separated from sand and granulate.

Worn turf is recycled at our plant in Germany.

With its high durability – over 500,000 load cycles in the Lisport test – the CORE fibre contributes significantly to sustainability. The CORE fibre in the pilot project consists essentially of a mixture of virgin PE and 30 % of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics. The CORE sheath is made of 100 % recycled plastic waste derived from pyrolysis oil. The design of the artificial turf already takes account of tomorrow’s recycling. No materials are used here that would render subsequent recycling difficult or impossible. The infill material for the small pitch is made of recycled polyethylene, the same raw material as for the artificial turf fibres. Used for this are production waste from fibre production and EOL artificial turf granules. Summary On the subject of waste, there is only one mission: to create a future where none of the products used will ever end up in a landfill. Getting there is not just a journey; it is also an aspiration. This is why, for example, the Rotterdam pilot project is focusing its research and development efforts on how to cope with the complexity of recycling old artificial turf systems. Core materials from old artificial turf systems are being sensibly reused in the production of advanced and innovative components of future artificial turf systems, thus transforming waste into useful and sustainable new products with new value. 43

REGUPOL SETS THE BENCHMARK IN SPORTS FLOOR CONSTRUCTION NEW INSTALLATION TECHNOLOGY OFFERS ADVANTAGES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF RUNNING TRACKS Author Photos

Lena Grosch REGUPOL BSW GmbH, DE – 57319 Bad Berleburg, www.regupol.de

The sports floor manufacturer REGUPOL presents a completely new and innovative laying technology for running tracks. By eliminating an entire work step, the customer saves installation time and material. REGUPOL calls this innovation “4.0 technology”. With the application of the new 4.0 technology, REGUPOL achieves the cost-saving elimination of a complete work step in the installation of its hybrid sandwich running track systems. This track system consists of a prefabricated REGUPOL base mat, on which a high-quality wearing layer of poly urethane and broadcast EPDM granules is applied on site. The special feature of this construction: The optimally adjusted sports-physical properties of the track are guaranteed at every spot of the track due to the factory fabrication of the base mat. Until now, indispensable during the construction of sandwich track systems of all types and all manufacturers: 44

The sealing of the base layer in order to prevent the pen etration of the self-levelling PUR wear layer during installation. Thanks to REGUPOL’s 4.0 technology, this step is no longer necessary. After bonding the REGUPOL base mat to the subbase, the liquid PUR wear layer is poured directly onto the base mat. Thanks to the special new installation technology, every gram of polyurethane remains on the surface and does not penetrate the base mat. All sport-functional properties of the base mat, which are always identical due to the fabrication in our REGUPOL plants, remain unchanged. Peter Breuer, Head of Sales for Sport Floors International at REGUPOL, summarizes the advantages of the 4.0 techsb 5/2020

nology as follows: “For our customers all over the world, this installation technology represents a saving of three essential aspects: Material, installation time and costs. Installation and durability risks due to adverse weather conditions are also reduced significantly.

Picture above

With its novel 4.0 technology, the REGUPOL base mat can be coated directly with polyurethane without a pore sealant. This saves time, material and money.

For more than five decades, REGUPOL has been building running tracks and other sports floors for all areas of use and sports levels. REGUPOL was one of the first companies in the world to build running tracks from Germany all over the world and still does today. With the innovative installation technology 4.0 REGUPOL once again sets standards in the quality and function of sports floors. sb 5/2020

TRAINING CENTRE ACQUIRES LATEST- GENERATION ARTIFICIAL TURF UWE SEELER FOOTBALL PARK IN BAD MALENTE Author Photos

Sebastian Schult Hans-Joachim Weitzel GmbH & Co. KG, www.hjweitzel.de

The Uwe Seeler Football Park is one of the central educational establishments of the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association for coaches and referees. It is located in Bad Malente in the middle of Holstein Switzerland, between Lübeck and Kiel. Successful football players and coaches have been trained here since 1952. The long-established facility in the beautiful town of Bad Malente hosted the German national team in its preparations for the World Cup in 1974 and 1990. For this special sports facility, the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association was looking for a partner that had already successfully implemented future-proof and sustainable sports surfacing projects on the market and could provide good references. After brief consultation, the contract was promptly awarded to WEITZEL Sportstättenbau, a company with an over 60-year successful track record. The existing recommendations and its attractive offer spoke volumes. This is because its artificial turf installed in 2010 had exceeded its service life and posed a high risk in terms of microplastic. The operator wanted an advanced and environmentally friendly solution, so it was necessary to fully remove the existing surface. Spot-on A very tight schedule between contract award and completion of the new playing surface left WEITZEL Sportstättenbau no room for delays. The contract was awarded in 46

the last week of June 2020, and completion was deadlined for 24 July. This high-speed process was a real challenge for the team. The old artificial turf had to be removed and recycled, and any repairs to the existing elastic base layer (e.g. stabilising it in areas that had been intensively used) were performed immediately. The production of the artificial turf and delivery of the mineral infill together with the natural cork infill, along with the coordination of all trades, had to work smoothly and within the tight schedule. Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of all parties involved and favourable weather conditions, the deadline was met. The first game on the new artificial turf, scheduled for the following day, took place as planned. Thanks to the coronavirus-related reduction in VAT and punctual completion, the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association was able to save some of the tax. sb 5/2020

Semi-infill artificial turf system The artificial turf system newly developed by W EITZEL Sportstättenbau was installed by the company Edel Grass. It ensures optimal functional characteristics even after many years of sports use and is an effective compromise between advanced turf (infill-free system) and the previous cork-sand infill systems. This new generation of artificial turf is low-maintenance. Depending on use, the pitch should be drag-brushed no more than once a week. A suitable maintenance device was also purchased in connection with the installation of the new artificial turf. The right maintenance is essential for the sports surface’s longevity. Owners, users and sports clubs cooperate closely with WEITZEL. After acsb 5/2020

ceptance of the sports facility, the experts will be avail able to the management of the Uwe Seeler Football Park for advice and coaching on a partnership basis. Maintenance seminars on artificial turf pitches are planned for early 2021. Preparations are already underway for appropriate training courses by the experts in Bad Malente – and also on site at the desired sports facility at the customer’s request. The Uwe Seeler Football Park is the venue for national and association league matches as well as for third division and various cup final fixtures. Interested parties are invited to inspect the latest generation of artificial turf and consult WEITZEL on their sports facility projects without obligation. 47

FLEXIBLE STANDING AREA FOR SPECTATORS EL SADAR STADIUM IS FIRST SPANISH FOOTBALL VENUE USING FANSIT SEATS Author Photos

Inmaculada Caballano Aguilar Insitual, ES – 14005 Córdoba, www.insitual.com/en

Football clubs provide different zones for their fans because there are many ways to experience sport and enjoy football: standing areas, preferential areas, VIP areas, business areas, etc. Club Atlético Osasuna in Pamplona is the first Spanish Premier League club offering a complete standing area with rail seats. Most commonly, each area of the stadium has its own type of seating. The seat models depend not only on the steepness of the grandstand – an essential factor to bear in mind – but they also have to be adapted to different styles of living and enjoying football matches in the stadium. Club Atlético Osasuna has a clear goal. Its modernisation project goes beyond the refurbishment of a sports venue and aims to create a football mecca in which every match is enjoyed to the maximum. The club also wants to extend this experience to the rest of the venue and to fans, press staff, players, technical staff and management staff. Fansit and Avatar seats offer bigger diversity of seating options to the fans In the stands this philosophy is reflected in the diversity of stadium seating models that have been installed, from the Fansit model installed in the south stand to the Avatar seats in the general grandstands. The latter are unrivalled in having a standing rail and an ergonomic folding seat, which also has armrests and cushioning in its premium version. All the stadium places are numbered, and standing capacity is determined by the number of places available. Most importantly, there is no risk of forward surges because the rows are separated from each other by the safety bars. These characteristics meet the safety requirements and there are many clubs in European leagues that are already installing safe standing areas. 48

Safety standards and more flexibility The Fansit model complies with the current safe standing standards, as familiar in Britain. Fans in the standing areas, usually located at the south or north ends of the stadiums, enjoy football matches on their feet, while the security measures implemented in the early 1990s are always respected. Rail seats meet this need, being the solution that makes standing capacity more flexible, with all the safety measures upheld with the aid of handrails throughout the rows. The Fansit stadium seat for standing areas is made of metal. It has a master key to enable the club to close or open the seat – in European competitions it is still required that all fans remain seated – and it is designed with an upper bar that is anchored to the stands, forming a strong safety barrier and a stable configuration with the entire row of seats. At El Sadar Stadium, 1,272 Fansit units have been installed. Another type of seat installed at El Sadar Stadium is Avatar seating, which provides other benefits for fans who prefer to be seated during football matches. There are 21,145 Avatar Basic seats as well as 1,389 Avatar Premium seats. The Avatar seating range offers comfort and design. In addition, the minimum space that Avatar occupies in its folded state optimises the space between rows and provides sufficient space for fans to celebrate goals and cheer their teams standing up. sb 5/2020

TECHNOLOGY THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER VIMACC “SAFETY IN SPORTS“ ENABLES SAFE AND FLEXIBLE VISITOR CHECKS Author Photos

Laura Simmes, Accellence Technologies GmbH, DE – 30419 Hannover, www.accellence.de Danilo_Vuletic / Shutterstock and Dahua Technologies

Accellence Technologies has developed a technical solution that enables fast and flexible visitor checks in relation to COVID-19. With the aid of their sensors, mobile terminals can spot within seconds spectators not wearing face masks and with an elevated body temperature. COVID-19-related rules have already become part of everyday life, and they are visible wherever you go. Face masks and hand sanitising are the most familiar measures we are confronted with when entering a shop, for example. To improve safety still further, body temperature is also increasingly being measured. But not every facility is capable of readily implementing the associated checks. In the sports industry, clubs are being pushed beyond their limits. Smaller clubs do not have the staff or finance to implement a comprehensive hygiene plan. Since larger clubs and sports facilities have to scale up their checking processes to large numbers of people, the controls must be not only reliable but also quick. Reliable checks on admission to spectator sports In collaboration with technology partners, Accellence Technologies has developed a technical solution that enables fast and flexible visitor screening. The outcome is the new vimacc “Safety in Sports” edition, consisting of one or more mobile terminals equipped with appropriate sensors and video management. sb 5/2020

With the aid of their sensors, the mobile terminals can check whether visitors are wearing face masks or have an elevated body temperature. This process takes only a few seconds. Visitors detected not wearing face marks are kindly advised to wear one. Their current body temperature is measured at the same time. If this is found to be too high, the visitor can be diverted to a safety zone for the potentially infected. The intelligent video security system from Accellence enhances safety. By using vimacc “Safety in Sports”, security staff are notified of the potentially infected person within a few moments and can take further steps. This data-protec tion-certified and universally adaptable solution, coupled with functions for compliance with the applicable data protection regulations, provides the ideal tools for safeguarding match operations and protecting health. Accellence’s goal is to fill the stands again in order to bring more people together at a time of pronounced social distancing. The terminals can be adapted to a huge range of requirements, so clubs and sports managers can adapt to the ever- changing COVID-19 measures with just a single solution. 49

OPEN-AIR HALL AS OUTDOOR GYM

LAYKOLD® INSTALLED AT TC MELLE

The modular design of the McArena outdoor arena is now being expanded with an innovative tool: outdoor fitness equipment from PLAYPARC. The installation of permanently installed fitness equipment outside and in the roofed front area of the open-air hall creates a compact sports centre. With this extension, ball sports, fitness courses and other facilities are combined under a single roof.

In Melle you can now play on a tennis court surface of the highest quality. In July, a Laykold® reference surface was installed at TC Melle and is now ready for play. This is the first Laykold® reference in the company’s immediate vicinity. For Melos, the court is an excellent opportunity to show our customers the Laykold® product under real conditions on site here in Melle. In addition, it is our aim to support TC Melle and thus sport in the town with the construction of the new area.

In its evolution, sport is subject to a variety of challenges and changes. Our values relating to and expectations of sport and sports facilities have changed just as much as schools and school sports. Hovering above everything is demographic change and now the coronavirus pandemic. To respond to these trends, our sports facilities have to change radically. Small, neighborhood-based sports parks with the widest possible range of offers for all age groups are the future, meeting the desire for health and individuality. Trends like Calisthenics and bodyweight exercises will be brought outside. High-quality sports facilities are becoming increasingly important, ideally roofed, but in any case in the fresh air. Open-air halls are popular with sports clubs, schools, kindergartens and informal groups. Adding a fitness trail to this offer also has the greatest synergistic potential: while the children play soccer in the hall, the parents can work on their fitness. This combination is also very promising from a safety point of view: these small sports parks are fenced in, illuminated and usually also supervised.

PLAYPARC Allwetter-Freizeitanlagenbau GmbH www.playparc.de sb 5/2020

This year, the US Open was equipped for the first time with Laykold® as the official court surface. The US Open thus replaced its courts for the first time in 42 years. The change continues the ongoing modernization of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the facility where the Grand Slam tournament has been played. Previous major renovations have included the installation of a movable roof over the Center Court, the construction of a new show court and the new construction of the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The Laykold® acrylic system is an all-weather hard court coating that is both hard-wearing and durable. It can be easily adapted to meet a whole host of criteria in the areas of performance, playability and appearance. For instance, a specially made rubber cushion can be integrated into the system to improve the cushioning effect and, in turn, the comfort of play. The wide choice of colours allows you to add a creative splash to your asphalt or concrete surfaces whether old or new. Thanks to the minimal maintenance requirements and low installation costs, you can reinvigorate existing concrete and asphalt surfaces, and extend the life of existing courts. The main application areas are tennis courts and multi-sports surfaces (for basketball, volleyball, football). Laykold® is also a popular solution for roller sports and schools. NEW CONICA TRACK AT THE STADE LOUIS II

NEW SEATS FOR TRONDHEIM STADIUM

The Stade Louis II is not only home to the Monegasque football club AS Monaco. It is also the venue of the IAAF Diamond League Herculis Meeting. For the tenth anniversary in 2020, the running tracks were to be brought up to date. The architectural office Arch Monaco chose Conipur Vmax from Conica AG. Conica has been developing and producing innovative jointless flooring solutions based on polyurethane and epoxy resins for sports, games, leisure and other areas for over 40 years.

Trondheim Multi-Purpose Stadium, Europe’s largest indoor stadium, was one of the most successful projects completed by Avant Sports in 2019. Avant Sports supplied more than 8,960 Hilo seats to this stadium, 5,098 of which are telescopic and 3,862 fixed.

Dr. Steffen Willwacher from the Institute of Biomechanics and Orthopaedics at the German Sports University of Cologne tested the Vmax and came up with the following assessment: “Following our applied material tests as well as bio(mechanical) tests, which we carried out with a top athlete, we have found that the Vmax athletic track creates the conditions for running fast – especially in the acceleration phase. Runners can better apply horizontal forces on Vmax, increase their pace faster and ultimately achieve higher speeds.” Vmax has passed all the necessary technical tests and certifications: World Athletics Certification, EN 14877, DIN 18035, ASTM 2157 as well as biomechanical tests at the Sports University of Cologne (certification reference project Class I, II). Just how fast the new system is was demonstrated shortly after the opening of the Diamond League meeting. Joshua Cheptegei from Uganda smashed the world record for the distance of 5000 m, which has been held for 16 years, with a time of 12:35.36 minutes. But that is not all, since the re opening of the race track, further top results and records have been achieved: 11 world records, 9 national records, 3 regional records, 2 Diamond League records and 3 Herculis Monaco records. Conica AG www.conica.com 52

With black seating as the background colour, red, green, blue, and yellow seats have been randomly distributed in designated areas in the stadium. The four different colours help to highlight the stadium’s modularity and their brightness boosts the atmosphere of excitement in the stadium. Trondheim Multi-Purpose Stadium makes full use of the telescopic system’s unique and superior performance: ultra-high rows, perfect cut-angle design and fully automatic stand design, with flexible first rows making it perfectly adaptable to different types of activities. The seating provided for Trondheim Multi-Purpose Stadium belong to the Hilo series, which was independently designed by Avant Sports. It features an automatic folding system, PP moulding, and a seat design satisfying both ergonomic and aesthetic considerations, making it simple but stylish. The series products conform to the stadium’s overall style, creating a strong visual impact for the audience. Hilo series seating was especially developed for stadiums of this scale. Avant sports is innovative in its development work and aims to become a leading brand in sports facilities and equipment worldwide.

S-CONNECTION MAT SYSTEM

SUSTAINABLE FLAGSHIP TURF

Vorarlberg in Austria has another special attraction, a new bouldering arena in Dornbirn with a total of 1,200 square meters of bouldering space with various training and climbing options for beginners and professionals. Bänfer Sportmanufaktur was also involved in this special project and installed the popular Exclusive Type 2 boulding mats with a patented S-Connection System and a special carpet system with needlefelt in the climbing areas. The entire floor was equipped with these protection mats with a base consisting of a combination core with a solid surface. The combination core is made of composite foam that is glued to a softer PU foam and equipped with a unique S-Connection System, with which the cores are “interlocked” and almost seamlessly connected together to reduce indentation and gap slippage. The surface is a very smooth and thick PVC tarpaulin fabric, which is also strong, durable, lightfast and UV-stable.

SV Niedergailbach is one of the first football clubs for which Polytan has laid its LigaTurf Cross GTzero turf, the world’s first CO2-neutral synthetic turf for football. The decision in favour of our carbon-neutral synthetic turf with a sand and cork filling was predominantly influenced by the sports planning committee of Germany’s Interior Ministry, which now only approves grants for eco-friendly solutions. In early 2020, therefore, our specialists first removed the old synthetic turf – doing this within one day – and then cleaned the substrate and checked it for damage. The elastic layer of the previous turf, dating back to 2004, was reused in the process, which highlights the sustainability of the whole project. The elastic layer consists of recycling material anyway, in this case environmentally tested end-of-life rubber granules that are expected to last for the next 30 years.

The bouldering area edges are equipped with a special needlefelt system, that is only available at Bänfer Sportmanufaktur, in which the profiled needlefelt is laminated onto a PVC tarpaulin. This system combines the advantages of both materials – the carpet does not stretch and wear out, remains dimensionally stable and also offers a pleasant surface. The needlefelt sheets are 1m and 2m wide and are attached to the top of the mat and connected to each other with Velcro tape, so that individual elements can be quickly replaced if necessary. To improve the foothold on the mat, the entry areas and some wall areas are additionally provided with a fixed reinforced foam. All components of the mat construction were custom made and adapted on site to the wall construction, which enables a clean and precisely fitting that is almost seamless. Bänfer GmbH www.baenfer.de sb 5/2020

The manufacturing process for the LigaTurf Cross GTzero is 100% carbon-neutral and has no negative impact on the playing properties. That is because of the interaction of vari ous measures, including a new manufacturing process as well as the use of a bio-based plastic derived from sustain able agriculture. The unique combination of smooth and textured filaments in a synthetic turf system ensures natural playing properties, a heavily reduced infill requirement and easier maintenance. The CO2-neutral eco-balance of the LigaTurf Cross GTzero significantly improves the attractiveness of this synthetic turf for clubs and local authorities, of which Niedergailbach is an early example. Alongside from the high environmental standard, though, it also offers enhanced player comfort while being extremely hard-wearing and easy to maintain – in Niedergailbach it will in future be used by SG Bliesgau, which has no less than four men’s teams.
