Editorial DEAR IAKS MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF “SB”, The COVID-19 pandemic continues to put us to a severe test. Depending on the situation, some sports and leisure facilities may have to close. I wish to single out swimming pools as an example, as they proved to be safe places during opening hours between the first and second waves. Thanks to their efficient water treatment and ventilation systems with roughly six air changes per hour, they provide good conditions for safe operation. Pool operators make a further contribution to user safety with their hygiene strategies. Our IAKS experts will continue their efforts to keep you up to date with information. On current issues we organise virtual conferences for all interested parties as well as expert groups at the international level on a smaller scale. We share the findings derived there in all of IAKS’s channels. The present “sb” also provides you with plenty of useful information. In the refurbishment of the Olympic Swimming Hall in Munich (Germany), the 1972 Olympic architecture is coming together with state-of-the-art technology. Combining elite sport and research, health management and training, the OYM (On Your Marks) competence centre in Cham (Switzerland) is now on the starting line. Visitors will find bathing fun and welcome relaxation at the swimming pool in Kusel (Germany). Idyllically situated is the modernised bathing chalet at the Völser Weiher pond in Italy. In Fagernes in Norway and Almere in the Netherlands, playgrounds inspire all those who enjoy physical exercise. Our examples from Canada and Australia provide multifunctional offers. The field report “Business inter-

ruption insurance during the pandemic” explains case studies and looks ahead to possible consequences for the future. Turning to the coming year, I am particularly looking forward to the many examples of innovative and sustainable sports facilities from around the world. We have just started working on inviting entries to the IOC IPC IAKS Architecture Awards. Outstanding buildings and complexes that meaningfully combine sustainability and legacy, and that embody highly functional planning and exceptional architectural design – does this sound like your facility? If so, why not compete for the foremost international architecture award for innovative and sustainable sports, leisure and recreational buildings? You will find all the information on our website. In the first half of 2021, international events will still be difficult to organise, but at the national level our IAKS sections are planning attractive events locally. We currently firmly believe that more will be possible in the second half of the year and that the world’s flagship event for the industry, in the shape of the trade fairs FSB and aquanale, will be taking place in Cologne from 26 to 29 October 2021 together with the IAKS Congress. I am already looking forward to finally meeting you there in person again! I now wish you an inspiring read and close with my best wishes for the Christmas season and hopes for a better 2021. IAKS JAPAN TWO ONLINE EVENTS HOSTED In October, IAKS Japan had invited experts to give insights about “Places for health and sports” and the “Walkable City”. The first online event entitled “Places for health and sports” was held on 22 October 2020. Mr. Moriya from the Japan Sports Agency introduced the „Sports Space Borderless Project“ which focuses on the utilization of existing facilities and the opening of private facilities for public use. He was joined by LOSFEE Director Kiyohito Tamotsu who spoke about designing spaces and programmes to improve the use of spaces in difficult climate settings. More than 40 participants took part in this event and learned about optimizing facility usage. The second online event dedicated to the “Walkable City” took place on 26 October. Mr. Tsukamoto from the Ministry of Territory, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism shared the concept of „Walkable Cities“, highlighting the social needs and future possibilities for walking comfortably in urban areas. Next, Mr. Fukubayashi from Tsukuba Wellness Research talked about the „Smart Wellness City“, concentrating on town planning in rural areas to promote public health. Prof. Tsukihashi from Kobe University closed the event by presenting several Walkable City projects in Japan and Australia. More than 40 participants enjoyed the information and learned about the impact of walking and planning for public health.

IAKS AUSTRIA’S ONLINE FORUM SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN TIMES OF COVID On 19 November 2020, IAKS Austria held its virtual congress on the subject of sports development. Originally planned as a two-day in-person event, the discussion took place in a smaller, digital setting due to the deteriorating COVID situation. The organisers wel comed numerous participants from many different fields of sport (local authorities, clubs, operators, designers and manufacturers) to the exchange of experience. Key input was provided by Lisa Gassler (marketing man ager at Venuzle) on the digitisation of municipal sports management, Dr Gerold Sattlecker (business director of the ULSZ Rif) on how to deal with COVID from the point of view of a large sports centre and on specific measures, and Dieter Schimanek (managing director of Vienna climbing hall / “Kletterhalle Wien”) on the changes prompted by COVID in terms of the usage strategy and infrastructure of the climbing hall as an exercise space. The speakers unanimously appealed to the powers that be not to exclude sport as the first step if new COVID-related measures have to be taken. The positive effects on physical and mental health must always be emphasised. Sports opportunities should remain accessible to all for as long as possible, especially since there are many different effective hygiene strategies not only for elite sport (around 3% of all users) but also for mass sports in general. ONLINE CONFERENCE POOL OPERATIONS UNDER COVID-19 CONDITIONS

The IAKS Swimming Pool Expert Circle offered a public online conference on 30 November 2020 to discuss the current situation of pool operations under Covid-19 conditions and to develop ideas for future pool developments. Three pool engineers identified possibilities to optimize air ventilation systems to ensure a safe pool environment for users. Based on the observations by Björn Aas (NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Centre for Sports Facilities and Technology), Tom Devin (Devin Consulting Engineers) and Jürgen Kannewischer (Kannewischer Ingenieurgesellschaft), the conference moderator Dr Stefan Kannewischer (Kannewischer Management) draw the conclusion that the pool water itself is safe due to water treatment and that ventilation systems work efficiently, so no further investment is required. In a second panel discussion, three operators reported from their experiences related to guest registration, admission process, measurements for social distancing, and staff training. Marc Riemann (KölnBäder), Thomas Meier (GMF) and Derek Anderson (Aura Holohan Group) stated that it is possible to operate a pool facility respecting the requirements but at uneconomical conditions. The final round of experts led to design challenges. From the architects‘ perspective, Darryl Condon (HCMA), Gar Holohan (Aura Holohan Group), and Michael Hall (FaulknerBrowns Achitects) discussed how Covid-19 might influence the design of public aquatic facilities in the future. Cooling cities is Kiyo’s lifetime goal. Being a passionate landscape architect, he intends to mitigate urban heat islands and to turn them into places suitable for sport activities. He invented „Comolevi Fractal Shade“, a bio-mimicry product - the technology was inspired by the fractal as an natural object. The design is utilized for public spaces dedicated to sports activities in heated cities. Together with his landscape architecture skills, he shares the technologies with stakeholders to create urban design.
Tobias Maasberg lives and works in Calbe/Saale in Germany, (Saxony-Anhalt). There he is authorised as a consultant engineer to file building applications with the Chamber of Engineers. His office of engineers and experts for the building industry was founded in 1992 and realizes projects in building construction and civil engineering, primarily in the public sector. One of his main areas of expertise is the renovation of sports facilities and the construction of new ones.

Since 2003, Kevin Jones has been CEO of Blacktown Venue Management Ltd, a company wholly owned by Blacktown City Council and overseeing all of its sports and aquatics centres, including Sydney 2000 Olympic legacy venue, Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney. During a 36-year career, Kevin has worked in the UK, the Middle East and Australia.
As one of Australia’s leading Field of Play designers, Jarrod works with Engineering firm SPORTENG blending his Civil Engineering profession with his extensive knowledge for the development of sport and recreation facilities.
A member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), Kevin is a great believer in the value, the equity and the pride that sport and recreation can bring to any and all communities.

Jarrod’s experience includes athletics running tracks, hockey fields, football grounds (all codes) and general-purpose facilities. His credentials are based on knowledge of specialist engineering applications and a detailed understanding of athlete and venue owner requirements. This proficiency has seen Jarrod work on most major sport projects throughout Australia in recent years.

FSB 2021: #B-SAFE4BUSINESS KOELNMESSE SHOWS HOW IT WORKS In order to host trade fairs such as FSB 2021 – International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities – as in-person events and to provide a safe trade fair experience for exhibitors and visitors in the coronavirus era, Koelnmesse presented the prototype of a trade fair. The #B-SAFE4business Village, which covered approximately 5,000 square metres in Hall 9 of the trade fair grounds translated the requirements of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia’s Coronavirus Protection Ordinance into the event practice of international trade fairs. The #B-SAFE4business Village was open to Koelnmesse’s customers on invitation throughout the entire month of October, and many FSB exhibitors took advantage of the opportunity to gather plenty of information. Koelnmesse has demonstrated that the trade fair organiser is excellently prepared for events with several thousand participants from all over the world. The entire customer journey was mapped, from paperless ticketing and the newly developed eGuard app for directing the flows of visitors, to a wide variety of stand construction concepts that take the social distancing rules into account even when space is limited. New event formats and digital technologies showed how exhibitors can increase their reach with hybrid exhibition stands. In the field of event services, Koelnmesse presented its catering and hygiene concept,
among other offerings. In addition to several Koelnmesse business divisions, various service providers also participated in the Village. Takashi started his career at a hospital focusing on medical fitness and lifesaving. After graduation, he worked for a hospital to encourage “health-care without medicine”. The first OUTDOOR FITNESS CLUB was established in Hayama town, and more clubs in 25 cities in Japan have followed.
Bernadette Chaix is an architect specialized in the design of large lighting structures, construction of post-tensioned concrete floors and resolution of reinforced concrete pathologies in sports facilities. She serves as Project Coordinator at Chaix Engineering. Bernadette acts as Secretary of the Professional Practice Commission at the Central Society of Architects (SCA) and President of the Media Commission of the Association of Structural Engineers (AIE). The Professor of Reinforced Concrete Structures at the Architecture, Design and Urbanism College (FADU) of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) is co-author of the book “Industrial Concrete Floors: Design, construction and maintenance”.

SYMPATHETIC TO THE CONTEXT NORTHCOTE AQUATIC + RECREATION CENTRE IN DAREBIN (MELBOURNE), AUSTRALIA The City of Darebin has engaged Warren and Mahoney to design a replacement facility. The aquatic components include an enhanced outdoor 50-m pool, indoor lane pool, warm water pool, leisure pool, splash pad and learn-to-swim pool. The fitness and wellness facilities include multi-purpose spaces for group fitness and yoga, a fitness centre and consulting rooms for allied health professionals. Located at the heart of the design, the outdoor 50-m pool is upgraded, but retains the existing landscape character that the community has come to cherish. The landscape design embraces the outdoor public space and the building itself through a carefully scaled berm that wraps around the built form. Materials and systems have been selected to minimise the carbon footprint during construction and reduce energy use during operation. A large solar panel roof array contributes a significant portion of the energy for the building. The timber structure provides sustainability benefits, as well as low maintenance and a welcoming aesthetic. 16
The central challenge was to create a design which is sympathetic to the local, largely residential context, while also framing a new 50-m pool and external space. This challenge was met by using materials that are sympathetic to the context (brick and timber) and breaking down the overall “visual mass” of the project through the careful modulation of façade and roof elements. Additionally, the City of Darebin required the project to meet a 6-Star Green Star sustainability rating – a demanding target for aquatic facilities. BY THE RIVER OUTDOOR POOL IN TELLINGSTEDT, GERMANY The design by Deckert Mester Architects envisages an L-shaped structure. The existing building is to be cleared and the pit of the existing pool is to be re-used. The multifunctional pool is wrapped around a peninsula and creates synergies for the varying interests of pool users. The rounded edges of the building create a gestural roofed entrance. The building is divided into three parts: service/meeting place, changing rooms/sanitary and plant/wellness, which are united under the curved L-shaped roof. The building units guide users and create partly covered, flowing outdoor spaces that ensure access to the various facilities regardless of the weather.

From the entrance, users access the “market place”, which forms the focal point of the complex and extends from the entrance to the peninsula between the pools. The diving tower acts as a campanile, while a “fountain” forms the meeting point. The fountain is enclosed by a bench and opens the river bed, drawing attention to its existence. Arranged around the market

place are all the activity areas: entrance, changing room, kiosk, meeting point, children’s pool, multifunctional room and wellness area. The terrain rises to the west of the bathing area. Seating steps bridge the natural slope. The spacious flight of steps is an invitation to sunbathe, while also serving as a grandstand for the public during competitive events. The building ensemble and the sun-bathing staircase form a U-shape around the bathing area and open towards the sunbathing lawn and camp site.
The multifunctional pool is arranged so as to minimise mutual disturbance between the various user groups. It is wrapped around the peninsula serving as the starting point for such activities as diving and sliding. At the same time, the arrangement creates space for two 50-metre lanes, which are used for competition and training. A wide wave slide serves the non-swimmers’ pool.

A CHAMAELEON BUILDING PARIS 2024 AQUATICS CENTRE, FRANCE For the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Olympic Aquatics Centre will host the diving, water polo and synchronised swimming competitions. For the Paralympic Games, the stadium is hosting boccia. After the Olympic games, it will turn into a public facility with a 50-m pool, a diving pool, a 25-m non-swimmers´pool, multipurpose pool and an aqua-kids area. The centre offers 2,500 fixed seats and 2,500 temporary seats. The design by VenhoevenCS and Ateliers 2/3/4/ proposes multifunctional use – with bouldering, 3x3 basketball, fitness, 5x5 football and a restaurant.

The venue for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – striving to be the most sustainable games in history – is positioned opposite the Stade de France, the largest sports arena in France. A pedestrian overpass creates a new link, a place of everyday life, and a passage.
Sustainability Like a leaf, the roof combines several functions in a single form: shelter, filtering the light, rainwater collection, integration of technical networks and, finally, capturing the energy of the sun.
During the games, the overpass will be the means to access the aquatic sporting competitions from the Stade de France. Synchronised swimming, water polo and diving competitions will take place in the Aquatics Centre, while the large competition pool will be located in the temporary Olympic Swimming Stadium. The entire length and width of the footbridge will be left open to facilitate the large flows of spectators. After the Games, a new path will be proposed thanks to a landscaping project. The sizeable width of this footbridge creates a typology that makes it more like a square than a street.
The necessary volume of the spaces in the Aquatics Centre minimises the energy required for heating and is created with a layer of wooden beams only 50 cm in height and with a span of approximately 80 m, in a thin and spectacular skin. The structure made entirely of wood not only reduces carbon emissions considerably compared to steel and concrete, but also locks up carbon. Inside the Aquatics Centre, in this immense cathedral de dicated to sports, there is no false ceiling or cladding. To accommodate the spectators around the competition sb 6/2020

MARINA NEW INDOOR SWIMMING POOL IN HAREN AN DER EMS, GERMANY Shipping enjoys high priority in the town of Haren situated on the river Ems. At the “Harener Sporthafen” marina, a new focus for sport and public life in the town is being created. KRIEGER Architekten has been awarded the contract for the indoor swimming pool project announced in November 2019. Haren is considered important as a shipping location beyond the immediate region. More than 20 shipping companies and four harbours integrated within the borders of the municipality shape the infrastructure and townscape in equal measure and organise the closely interlinked activities between the water and the land. Life on and with the water is deeply rooted in the economy and society. The design builds on this tradition: the outcome is the strategy for the “Harener Sporthafen” – and hence a new, high-quality meeting place for locals and visitors. The design approach of a synergistic and extendable infrastructure plots the course for the future development of the sports- and leisure-oriented area in the south of Haren. The combination of these sports and leisure uses creates an urban presence and enhances the image of the municipality of Haren in the process. Design modelled on the infrastructure of a harbour The design idea revolves around a central, outwardly oriented traffic area which, like a harbour basin, is a place of arrival and incorporates existing parking spaces. The 22
adjoining “promenade” serves as a transition area to the various buildings of sports and public urban life (yearround swimming pool with sauna, Emsparkstadion (stadium) and other planned public buildings) and is formed by the forecourt. A projecting canopy identifies this outdoor space as a communal area and does away with classical boundaries. The structures arranged under the canopy are the actual destinations of users: the pool deck of the year-round swimming facility, the sports park and the meeting room of the planned municipal hall. The building complex thus wraps itself around the central traffic area, while the canopy accommodates all the functions and enables a harmonious relationship among the buildings. Great importance has been attached to flexibility and openness in order to allow the ensemble to grow: the various building phases in the creation of Haren’s marina as a focal point can be executed independently of one another without appearing disorganised. www.architekt-krieger.de sb 6/2020

The officially ordered business closures have hit many companies hard. Those who had hoped to be able to offset the financial loss with compensation payments from their insurers have probably been disappointed. After all, how could a company insure itself against the consequences of a pandemic whose pathogen was previously unknown? Insurance brokers Lucas Brenken and Matthias Wendt report on their practical experience and outline possible consequences for the future. Business interruption insurance provides cover for companies that pose an increased infection risk to human health. Classical examples are food processing, gastronomy, hospitality, health and care services, as well as leisure centres and swimming pools. Business interruption insurance covers the cost of ongoing operation (e.g. rent and payroll) as well as the lost business profits of the insured business if an insured disease or pathogen is detected at the insured business and the competent authority orders the closure of the business. The same applies if essential workers are prohibited from working due to illness. Business interruption insurance was available from some insurers before the advent of coronavirus. As a plausible example of a loss, insurers envisaged a localised, short-lived contamination with salmonella, legionella, germs or viruses. In this case, the potential cost and probability of loss are fairly quantifiable and therefore insurable. Collective risk equalisation One of the basic principles of the private insurance industry is that a multitude of similar risks are covered in an uncertain but clearly defined loss scenario. A community is thus formed in which each member, to cover the risk, makes a financial contribution: the insurance premium. These funds are then available for compensation payments. Since not all members of the community are normally affected by a loss at the same time, members have to pay insurance premiums lower than what they would have to pay if they incurred an insured loss. This principle is known as collective risk equalisation. 24
However, the system can only work if cover is required for a limited number of cases, because if all policyholders suffer a loss at the same time, there may not be enough capital available to cover all claims. This is why insurers regularly exclude so-called “accumulation risks” or unforeseeable large-scale losses such as “war” or “aviation” from insurance cover. Does business interruption insurance apply to coronavirus? Business interruption insurance was introduced to cover in dividual cases. This is probably due to the fact that a loss scenario such as the one that has now arisen due to the COVID-19 pandemic was previously inconceivable or considered unrealistic. However, the loss has now arisen and insurers are confronted with the claims. Whether a policyholder has a right to compensation is to be checked as always on the basis of the insurance policy, the insurance conditions and – if available – on the basis of individual agreements. For the policyholder to receive a payment, the following basic requirements in particular must be met: • • • •
There is an active insurance contract. There is an active claim for cover (no premium default). The insured event has occurred and no exclusions apply. The policyholder has incurred a demonstrable loss.
While the first two points can be checked quickly and easily, things can become complicated from the third point onwards. sb 6/2020
In the insurance conditions, insurers define the dis eases and pathogens for which insurance cover is to be provided. Depending on the insurer, either a positive list or an open definition with reference to the Infection Protection Act is given – ideally with the clarification that the version valid at the time of the claim applies and the diseases and pathogens listed in it are insured. Since the COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2 pathogen was previously unknown, it naturally could not be included in the positive lists of the insurers concerned. For insurers with positive lists, the rejection of claims was therefore comparatively simple and, in my personal opinion, legally unobjectionable. Preventive business closures Whether or not the insurance cover is effective depends on the type of official order. In all cases the insured business must actually be contaminated with the pathogen / disease and be obliged to (partially) close by individual order. In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, all companies in certain sectors were ordered to close as a preventive measure. The authorities were not interested in the evidence in individual cases. This is known as a “blanket order”. Whether this results in a legally valid reason to reject claims must, in case of doubt, be established by the courts. The courts will probably still have to consider and decide on a large number of cases. Procedure in practice As brokers specialising in swimming pool businesses, we have recently held a large number of discussions on business interruption insurance and have found broad variation in the settlement of claims by German insurers. Three settlement practices are common: 1. Total rejection of claims 2. Partial settlement on the principle of the “Bavarian solution” 3. Complete settlement in conformity with the contract For the reasons mentioned above, some insurers have completely rejected the claims of their policyholders. Whether each of these rejections is justified can in case of doubt only be clarified by the courts. “Bavarian solution“ The legal uncertainty explains the emergence of the “Bavarian solution”. Insurers who could neither fully accept nor reject claims for compensation possibly saw the “Bavarian solution” as a way to avoid expensive and protracted legal disputes and to resolve the situation with comparatively little financial loss. Working with insurers and industry representatives, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs reached an agreement under which policyholders should receive 10 to 15 % of the agreed daily rates after all. sb 6/2020
The outcome of these negotiations and their legality are highly controversial. Recent court rulings have fuelled doubts in the Bavarian solution and in insurers’ settlement practices. As always, however, it depends on the individual case. In cases of doubt, we recommend seeking advice from specialist lawyers. This solution always leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. If the policyholder agrees to the compromise, he waives 85 to 90 % of any insurance benefit. The majority of insurers have exempted themselves from further claims if the policyholder accepts the “Bavarian solution”. Risk of protracted legal clarification Policyholders, who are already under great financial pressure due to the general lockdown and the subsequent continuation of limited business opportunities, are faced with having to choose the lesser of two evils. However, those who are convinced of their entitlement to compensation and want to obtain the full agreed daily rate can expect time-consuming and costly clarification in court. Some companies will be intimidated by this prospect. But there are also positive counter-examples. We are currently aware of three insurers who have fully recognized their policyholders’ claims from the outset and compensated them in accordance with the insurance conditions. Outlook Most insurers have abandoned this segment for the time being. Those insurers that have fully indemnified their policyholders have naturally notched up enormous, unexpected expenses. In this respect, it is only logical that something will have to change for future pandemic events. For example, some insurers have already revised their insurance conditions and are generally excluding the right to compensation in the event of a “blanket order”. In order to reinstate the basic idea of the private insurance principle, the policyholder will in future have to be individually ordered to close by the competent authority. Insurers have also adjusted their premiums. Proposed remedy In my opinion, coverage in the event of a pandemic cannot be provided by the various insurers alone. As has already happened concerning the coverage of terrorist, pharmaceutical or nuclear risks, a broader framework with state involvement, in the form of an insurance pool for example, could be an appropriate solution. As long as there is no state-organised coverage through an insurance pool, each business should check which insurer offers insurance coverage for future pandemic-related business interruption. We advise consulting a specialist with knowledge of the industry. 25

1972 OLYMPIC ARCHITECTURE MEETS MODERN ENGINEERING MODERNISATION OF THE MUNICH OLYMPIC SWIMMING HALL The venue of the 20th Summer Olympics has undergone extensive refurbishment. With the participation of the originator architects, the architects of planplus have brought the architecture and design of 1972 back to life. The entire technical infrastructure has been upgraded along with the pool water treatment and fire protection systems. The swimming pools with their new moving floor technology have been designed in stainless steel and are now suitable for national competitions. The completely new children’s paddling area extends the facility’s range of attractions. The Olympic Swimming Hall is located in the centre of a popular city park. Originally, a maximum service life of 25 years had been assumed for the Olympic sports facilities. The Olympic Park enjoys great popularity among locals and visitors alike and still ranks as one of the sports facilities operated successfully and sustainably with a wide range of events. However, the almost 50 years of post-Olympic use by professional and recreational athletes and events have also left their mark on the swimming hall.
The reason for the complete refurbishment was an urgently needed upgrade of the fire protection system with improved escape and rescue routes from all levels, which extend for the most part under the Olympic Park grounds. Many areas of the building are out of bounds for bathers but are necessary for the operation of the swimming hall and the fitness centre renovated ten years ago. The entire technical infrastructure has been replaced so that the swimming facility can once again be operated to the highest sb 6/2020
standards of hygiene, and to create new sports and leisure attractions. Air bubbles for new training conditions At the same time, the pool area and the sauna refurbished in 2018 have been given barrier-free access. The swimming pools with their new moving floor equipment have been designed in durable stainless steel and the pool water treatment system has been gradually modernised. For diving training, a bubbler system creating a kind of cushion of air bubbles to minimise the risk of injury when imsb 6/2020
pacting the water surface has been installed in the diving pool for the German Swimming Association’s (DSV) junior diving training centre. Spanning the water surface between two 1 m diving boards, a 20 m long slackline enables safe balancing above the diving pool. New paddling area appeals to families with small children The new children’s paddling area takes up the formal language of the 1972 Olympic architecture with its basic forms of the circle and arc. The vibrant bathing landscape 27
with its white icebergs and the bright colours of the mosaics and play elements is lively and varied. The children’s paddling area features two pools with different water depths. Children are encouraged to play by a boat channel with a harbour, a slide with a water tunnel, a water-spraying crab and frog, and “jumping worms”. Alpine sauna with a new steam bath and SnowRoom The SnowRoom is an absolute innovation and a key trend-setting feature for public pools. Here you can cool off after your sauna session with real, finely crystalline snow and thus boost the body’s defences. The view of the breath-taking panorama of the Schneeferner mountain gives the impression of being outdoors. A glacier relief 28
with crystals transfers the scene spatially into the SnowRoom. The facilities in the swimming hall are rounded off by a new café. Situated on the grandstand with a fine view of the large pools, it serves light snacks and drinks to external visitors and bathers. Iconic overall design The main design idea behind the modernisation of the Olympic Swimming Hall during the various necessary alterations was to restore the architecture and design to the original state of the 1972 Olympics, while taking account of today’s technical and functional requirements. In close coordination with the monument protection sb 6/2020
a uthorities and with the participation of the originator architects, this concept has been consistently implemented. Visitors can now experience the look of the 20th Summer Olympics once again. The typical Olympic hues have restored the bright colourfulness of the so-called “Rainbow Games” to the hall and are particularly evident in the refurbished changing rooms and circular shower rooms. At the same time, the lighting equipment has been replaced at great expense and the various areas have been made more welcoming with energy-saving, daylight-controlled LED lighting. Access ways to the service areas are highlighted with large, backlit im ages. For example, visitors leaving the grandstand and entering the pool level are greeted by a picture of a swimmer sb 6/2020
illustrating immersion in the element of water. A further, atmospheric image of diver illustrates high diving. The renovation work was carried out during ongoing operation so that students of the Technical University of Munich and swimming enthusiasts could continue to use the pool. The concurrent restoration of the façade has given the building envelope an energy upgrade and revitalised the concept of visual permeability between the surrounding landscape and the pool interior. On Coubertinplatz in front of the swimming hall, a new pavilion has been built around an existing escape staircase and provides information on the unique architecture and organisation of the games on site. 29
OFF TO NEW SHORES LAKE-SIDE CHALET CHANGING ROOMS AND KIOSK IN VÖLS It was the famous leap into cold water. The modernisation of the bathing chalet on the shore of the idyllic Völser Weiher called for a good deal of sensitivity. With a new, modern approach, noa* has taken up a cherished tradition and brought the architecture into har monious accord with nature.
Amid magnificent mountain scenery and surrounded by bright-green larches, lies the Völ ser Weiher, a lake about one hectare in area at an altitude of just over 1,000 metres above sea level. In the nature conservation area, a new, small, elegant bathing chalet with adjacent public changing rooms and sanitary facilities has been built. The original kiosk had become somewhat antiquated – too small, no longer in line
with present needs and, above all, not at all barrier-free. Open loggia and terrace To keep the scale in this special environment unobtrusive and modest, the architects designed two small structures with a restrained cubature, connected along a transverse axis. One building, the new restaurant with a classic gabled roof,

contains the half-open, half-closed kitchen with a food counter and a bar where drinks are served. Next to this, the structure continues as an open loggia and terrace, permitting a sweeping view of the lake and the newly designed bathing area. The axis at right angles to this is defined by a niche that can be fully opened with a

folding wooden element. This contains a second count er where bathers as well as pedestrians and cyclists can collect light refreshments, ice cream and food from the outside, just like at a kiosk. This intelligent partitioning makes it possible to keep the loggia and terrace area pleasantly quiet, while at the same time ensuring rapid self-service.

Barrier-free welcome The second structure – a separate cube, not free-stand ing, but connected to that of the restaurant, creating a both architecturally and functionally close-knit ensemble – is dedicated to the mobile public. Here there are freely accessible sanitary facilities, which are also fully disabledfriendly, as well as changing facilities for enthusiastic recreational athletes such as swimmers and ice skaters. On its central axis, where there is also a small atrium with visitor lockers and changing rooms specially built by local 32
craftsmen, the cube remains permeable and open. The view of the natural surroundings thus remains unobstructed and warmly welcomes swimmers, ice sports enthusiasts and hikers. For these generally accessible facilities, a hard-wear ing resin putty has been selected that can withstand the stresses and strains from skates, for example, while at the same time offering a sure foothold on the ground in wet conditions. The design of the interior spaces speaks the language of the natural sb 6/2020
s urroundings. Thus, green was chosen as the b asic colour, which can be found on the floor, walls and ceiling. Seamless transition to nature A traditional South Tyrolean lace pattern has been worked into the floor’s resin putty. The motifs were pressed briefly into the moist compound and quickly removed again. With its irregularity, the three-dimensional effect, which varies in its intensity, adds an unusual touch and a hint of pleasant spontaneity to the sb 6/2020
room. The various shades of green also create a seamless transition to nature. While the restaurant building has roughly adopted the volume of the previous building and has a characteristic presence, the changing and sanitary is visually unobtrusive. The building volume along the transverse axis is formed by a timber frame structure, which also functions as a trellis for climbing plants. The greenery is intended to make the cubature “vanish” when viewed from the lake. A fast-growing jasmine clads the changing rooms in its natural green foliage. 33

BRIGHT AND SUMMERY MODERNISATION OF THE VITALBAD BATHING AND LEISURE PARK IN KUSEL At the Vitalbad bathing and leisure park in Kusel, a mix of bright colours dominates the interior after refurbishment and gives the pool facility its own identity and a cheerful atmosphere to create a summer mood even on dull winter days. Colours play a key role in the design scheme; this pool by 4a Architekten is again notable for its atmospheric interiors. The rehabilitation of the bathing and leisure park in Kusel focuses on enhancing the attractiveness of the indoor and outdoor pools and bringing the bathing complex up to the latest technical standards. In order to exploit synergies to maximum effect, the previously separate usage units have been merged to form a combined pool for cost-effective swimming operations. For this, the existing indoor pool had to be dismantled down to the bathing deck and rebuilt. It has only been possible to retain the slide tower and individual parts of the building of the existing structure. The starting point for the orientation and design of the new indoor pool was the existing basement. Pools for swimmers and non-swimmers have been kept in the existing building,
but have been re-tiled and the diving board has been replaced. The aim is to make the building as compact as possible and to optimise functional processes. For example, the cash desk and the restaurant are located directly adjacent to each other so that both areas can be served by a single employee during off-peak hours. Gaining extra space The ceiling heights have also been adapted to use. In the ancillary rooms, such as the changing rooms and showers, the room height is lower than that of the bathing hall, while in the diving area the roof folds upward. In the course of modernisation, the façade has been s hifted outwards so that the columns for the steel load-bearing structure are now located inside the building. inefficiency associated with the penetration of the outer skin and creates additional space. The new load-bearing structure is a steel frame construction of welded T-beams that span the entire width of the building. A suspended ceiling of lightweight woodwool panels provides good interior acoustics. The entrance to the indoor and outdoor pool is located in the south of the building. Along the glazed entrance façade, a roof projecting towards the outdoor pool provides a protected exterior space. Pool users enter the bathing hall from the transparently designed foyer via the changing rooms and sanitary facilities. 36

Colours create atmosphere Architecturally, the ancillary rooms form three cubes with rounded corners, and between them there are passages oriented visually towards the bathing hall. The eye-catching suspended ceiling, designed in bright, summery hues, not only ensures good acoustics, but also gives the Vitalbad its own identity and cheerful atmosphere. In contrast, the wall and floor surfaces have been designed in subdued colours. Green iridescent mosaic tiles on the walls and pools take up the colours of the surroundings, give the interior a peaceful aura and link the architecture with the countryside. The additional bathing opportunity – a new heated whirlpool – and the extended sunbathsb 6/2020
ing areas also enhance the recreational quality of the indoor pool. Modification of the outdoor pool offering The spacious outdoor pool area with its s unbathing lawns adjoins the building to the south. For efficient bathing operations, the water surface area outdoors has been reduced in the course of modernisation: A non-swimmers’ pool is no longer required and the new stainless steel swimming pool with four lanes is smaller than in the old bathing park. The leisure pool has been retained after the upgrade of the end of the pool and the surrounds. sb 6/2020
For younger pool users, an additional extra children’s pool and a mud pit have been created. The kiosk between the swimming pool and the flume structure will continue to be used without modernisation, as will the old changing room building, which will serve from now on as a storage room. The changing rooms and showers are located in a newly erected cold building, which is linked to the outdoor staircase with seating and reclining areas in the outdoor area. With these measures it has been possible, even with a tight budget, to design the indoor and outdoor pool in Kusel as a single unit in terms of design and function and to give the new bathing park its own identity with a striking aura. 37

Critical to realizing the aquatic centre for the community was emphasizing the creation of a truly accessible facility. Carscadden worked with district staff and stakeholders to design a modern facility comprising a 25-m competition lap pool, leisure pool, lazy river, and hot pool – making the spaces feel as large and generous as possible. Collecting the disparate building programming under a single, expansive roof – first wood, and ultimately a more cost-effective series of acoustical fins – makes the community pool feel like a regional pool, connected to the exterior and community. Northern British Columbia is uniquely endowed with a wide array of year-round outdoor activ ities. The rugged terrain lends itself to challenging hikes, mountain-biking, skiing, and swimming in one of thousands of remote lakes and rivers. But with a harsh climate and jagged landscape, recreation is not always easily accessible to those with reduced physical abilities, particularly during the long winters. With the goal of providing year-round wellness opportunities for all its members, the District of Vanderhoof aspired for decades to bring an aquatic centre to the rural community for its 4,500 residents and the 10,000 others in surrounding hamlets. But aquatic centres are big ticket items that can be a tough sell in smaller remote communities, particularly in the Canadian north where funds to build these types of facilities are limited and construction can be costly. Such projects need broad community support, and they need to strive for balance to of-
fer aquatic, sport, and recreation opportunities to the largest constituency of residents possible. It is not only that such projects need to garner broad community support by offering aquatics, sport, and recreation to the largest constituency of residents possible but they also need to strive for a fine balance between practical investment and community-mandated social goals. Have it all, under a single roof The facility is a testament to the will of the community in Vanderhoof to share and provide for everyone from the very young to the very old, both as a community hub for fitness and physi cal therapy, but also for entertainment and community engagement and cohesion. The Vanderhoof Community Centre features a full leisure, lap, and hot pool program in an efficient footprint. All pools are fully accessible and feature ramp access to allow those with limited mobility, including those requiring mobility sb 6/2020
Âdevices and/or those bound to wheelchairs, to gain easy access to the water, including the lap pool. Floating access Ramp access into the pools allows those in wheelchairs or assistive devices to be submerged in water deep enough to allow them to float into the swimming area. Because user safety is a paramount concern, the depth of the water at the bottom of the ramps has been calibrated to prevent accidental immersion in the water and in this way people are offered the choice to float at their own comfort level. Similarly, the leisure and hot pools have been outfitted with training, play, and therapeutic features, such as jets, bubblers, and a lazy river, diversifying the opportunities for sb 6/2020
pool visitors. This allows for a potentially extensive hydrotherapy program that can grant those with all levels of abilities access to low- or high-impact exercise in a safe environment. Change room with lift The change rooms are fully accessible for all genders and levels of abilities to accommodate interested participants. Accessibility is not limited to the universal change room – both of the gendered change facilities feature accessible showers, lockers, and toilets. But key to the goal of diversification is to provide enhanced accessibility opportunities where possible including a dedicated change room with lift and a room for reclining wheelchairs for people with significant disabilities. 39
The Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre has been designed and sized where all enclosed spaces are used to their full potential, and clear lines of sight from the main entrance into the natatorium, and from the natatorium to the lush surrounding environment, are taken advantage of. While modest in size, the building offers a generosity of space that feels good to be in and looks just as good. There is little wasted space and the water that has been included has been sized to be essential to the current and future needs of the community, attracting new and existing residents, as well as allowing for training and the de40
velopment of athletic talents locally, and hosting province-wide competitions. The Vanderhoof Aquatic Centre provides an important supplement to the recreation program mix in its locality. By providing a facility that can cater to a wide spectrum of ages, genders, and abilities, the local government has made an explicit statement in the benefit of recreation and sport as fundamental to the overall physical and mental well being of the population, while making decisive strides in reducing barriers to access. sb 6/2020

ON YOUR MARKS OYM COMPETENCE CENTRE FOR ELITE SPORT AND RESEARCH IN CHAM In the heart of Switzerland, a new facility, unrivalled at home and abroad for its combination of an ice rink, athletics hall and sprint track, opened in May 2020. This is where top athletes are coached and research is carried out at the highest level. The building designed by axess Architekten and Lüscher Architekten also houses a college for the training of talented athletes and an auditorium that can be hired for events by private individuals and companies. The name On Your Marks has been chosen with good reason. The competence centre wants nothing less than to make talented sportspersons the best in the world in the long term. At OYM, sports visionary Hans-Peter Strebel collaborating with muscle physiologist Marco Toigo has created a location where athletes can individually and comprehensively maximise their full potential on the basis of the latest scientific findings. His vision is to combine athletic training, health management, nutrition and research.
Layering of the room programme The dimensions of the building (100 × 50 × 40 m) made it necessary to place the ice hockey, sports and athletics halls one on top of the other. Like with Rubik’s Cube, the designers have optimised the layering of the room programme until the perfect solution was found. The load-bearing structure is a frame system of steel girders spanned by precast concrete slabs in a composite arrangement. Stabilisation is contributed by the building carcase and staircases as concrete cores. sb 6/2020

Balance of harmony and tension In its external and internal appearance, OYM is limited to a few selected materials. The envelope of galvanised sheet steel makes a somewhat rough and unpolished impression, but it will acquire patina with age and become more expressive.
Other elements, such as the luminaires for basic lighting, can also be found in the entire building. While a harmonious, uniform look was aspired to for the circulation zones, the distinctive appearance of the various OYM areas creates tension and gives the rooms with their own character a special aura.
In the interior, the intention was to give the numerous differently used rooms architectural coherence by deliberately limiting the variety of materials and colours. All of the permanently installed parts of the building have therefore been consistently designed on this principle. A

ically for OYM: an ice rink whose dimensions can be adapted from the European to North American specifications within about three hours. Engo developed and patented the new QuickAdapt system to the specifications of engineers Frey & Partner GmbH. There is no uniform, correct size specification for an ice hockey rink. It depends on where it is located. In Europe, the ice pad measures 60 x 30 metres; in North America, the National Hockey League (NHL) rinks are 4 metres narrower. In addition, most ice stadiums host not only ice hockey, but also ice sports such as speed skating or figure skating, which in turn require the 60 x 30 m ice surface. The QuickAdapt system makes it possible for athletes to train on ice rinks of different sizes. The size of the ice rink is changed by automatically moving the dasher boards with the aid of 16 hydraulic cylinders. The entire process takes about three hours and requires only five people. Because of the high injury risk in ice hockey, the OYM opted for engo’s flexible FlexBoard PPS (Player Protection System) dasher board. The board absorbs some of the player’s momentum on impact and thus helps to re44
duce the risk of injury. Engo is the only manufacturer to date to supply a dasher board whose flexibility has been tested and confirmed in a pendulum impact test with both fully tempered safety glass and acrylic glass. Optimal training conditions In the “skill zone”, players have a surface of synthetic ice at their disposal. There are eight shooting ranges for ice hockey shooting training. Additionally installed in one of them is a skatemill, a treadmill for ice hockey players. The skatemill enables players to optimise their coordination and shooting technique. There is also a small area with real ice devoted to goalkeeper training. In the sports hall, too, the client rejected conventional fixtures and fittings – thanks to a glass floor with LED markings, the sport applicable to matches or training can be selectively displayed at any time. Each training session is assessed OYM’s centrepiece is the athletics hall and sprint track crowning the other two halls. They provide top athletes with versatile infrastructure: some 300 items of t raining equipment and free weights, a sprint and stair ramp, a sprint track with four 80-metre-lanes and a “turf” area permit the targeted design of training sessions in the sb 6/2020
v arious dimensions of the determinant performance parameters. Here the athletes are coached and supervised not only physically, but also scientifically and therapeutically. Each training session is recorded and evaluated. To ensure performance comparability, room temperature and humidity in the athletics area are 20° Celsius and 50 % respectively throughout the year – with a maxi mum variation of plus/minus one degree or five percentage points. An artificially created cooling lake up to a height of 2.5 m makes it possible to comply with these strict targets. The combination of four core competences makes OYM unique At OYM, athletes can train at the highest level with the best possible support. But the uniqueness of the centre lies in the data-supported combination of the four core competences of athletic training, athlete health management, nutrition and research & development. For athlete health management there are several treatment zones and rooms as well as hydrotherapy, while the scientists have access to various dry and wet laboratories with measuring and analysis technologies. The nutrition is also based on the latest findings and is adaptsb 6/2020
ed to the personal needs as well as to the athletes’ training and competition performance. In addition to the kitchen, the catering facilities include a restaurant, the SMS (Sport Meets Sport) bar and the sports lounge. OYM also has recreational facilities comprising special relaxation boxes for a short power nap as well as 25 guest rooms and a foyer for athletes training at OYM for longer periods. A college for talent development Since OYM is committed to the holistic development of its athletes, it is not surprising that it also takes care of their education. It therefore has its own college providing a variety of training courses and is consistently focused on the needs of individuals with talents in sport and other fields. Rooms with state-of-the-art equipment and zones for concentrated learning, group work and frontal instruction support the innovative teaching approach. A room for the public Last but not least, the client has integrated into the new building a beautiful auditorium that meets the highest architectural, acoustic and technological standards and includes not only a large stage but also interpreter booths. Suitable for lectures and conferences as well as concerts and other events, it can also be hired by private individuals and companies. 45

At Pridham Hall, Snøhetta together with local partners JPE Design Studio and Jam Factory, has delivered a new comprehensive sporting hub to encourage students’ well-being and physical health, while simultaneously providing an on-campus venue for graduations, events and student interaction. The multi-purpose sports facilities include a hall with multi-use courts, a 25-m pool and gym facilities with the ability to curate social sports activities in the lobby spaces. Accessible external public amphitheatres fold to the ground plane to the north and west, flanked by floating green gardens. Main features of the building are the hall, a pool, sports facilities and function spaces as well as integrated green spaces. By allowing public access to both interior and exterior spaces, the building aims to create a sense of public ownership and engagement. The interaction between the landscape and the building offers passers-by a snapshot of life inside Pridham Hall and creates a welcoming fa çade for the campus which enhances activity both inside and outside the building.
Green wings On the north-eastern and western sides of the building, the roof extends down to street level to create two green terraced recreation spaces which function as large external public amphitheatres. These flanked “green wings” are designed to produce an exceptional display of textures and colours, showcasing the plant species of South Australia with emphasis on those from the Adelaide region. Creating a dedicated social space, the western amphithea tre is integrated with the adjacent buildings, sb 6/2020
with opportunities for outdoor cinema and events. The north-western corner of the building is raised, highlighting the main entrance and Pridham Hall’s connections with the urban realm. Sport activities, events and ceremonies in the main hall The heart of the building is the hall, located on the ground floor. Differing from traditional academic main halls, this multifunctional space houses sport activities, events and ceremonies. Designed with distinct red el ements in the draping and patterns on the timber walls, the aesthetics of the hall contrasts with the surrounding lobby area, creating an energetic and vibrant space. The 1,600 m² hall includes a climbing wall and a student lounge mezzanine on the second level. In addition, the building can also be transformed from a sports hub into a capacious event space with the a bility to host anything from banquets to annual graduation ceremonies for up to 2,000 people. UniSA Sport is situated on the basement level and offers a gymnasium, dance studio and a unique 25-m sb 6/2020
swimming pool. Vertical connection between these spaces and the ground floor is created by the use of glazed voids between the street and the lobby where views and daylight are able to penetrate with maximum effect. Energy-reducing strategies In alignment with the university’s target of a 15 % reduction in campus-wide carbon emissions by 2021, the project embeds several energy-reducing strategies into the design that are both high- and low-tech. The design of Pridham Hall enables natural light to penetrate deep into the building, from the basement level through to level 1, reducing the need for artificial lighting and heating by using efficient passive design features. The ground floor lobby space’s permeable glazed façades opens up to permit natural ventilation, creating an indoor-outdoor space and flexible use. The northern and western lobbies are considered a single internal plaza space, with strong visual and physical connection to the outside, allowing full enjoyment of the warm Adelaide climate. 47

The former playground has been transformed into a tailor-made environment, a so-called Skills Garden which is all about stimulating, challenging and having fun when exercising. The playscape is part of living, working and leisure activities, where people can meet and be together. The Skills Garden is a social infrastructure that attracts people and promotes social interaction. A place for young and old, where activities are offered throughout the week and around the clock. The attention to design of this structure ensures a pleasant environment for relaxing and socialising. Almere Haven is the oldest part of the city of Almere, where the first houses were built in the mid-1970s. The city’s population has now far exceeded 200,000 and is upgrading a number of areas. One of the projects has been the replacement of its sports hall. It was one of the oldest buildings in Almere and needed renovation after 40 years of trusty service. The sports hall was rotated through 180 degrees, and as a result the entrance now faces the park.
This rotation had consequences for the facil ities around it: the old Haven playing area, an asphalt surface suitable for football and basketball, also had to be included in the new design. The idea arose to create a Skills Garden here instead of a “standard pitch”. A project group was formed to involve everyone in the process, i.e. the municipality of Almere, the Athletic Skills Model group (ASM), and the locals with their ideas, wishes and preconditions. sb 6/2020
For all target groups With the implementation of the Skills Garden, the munici pality of Almere has made it possible for local residents, sports clubs, schools and health institutions to offer opportunities for a healthy and vital lifestyle in a sustainable way. Seniors can gather to train their balancing skills, for example, or play with children, and schools can offer gym classes here. Generally speaking, the Skills Garden is suit able for all target groups: people with and without disabilities, children, adolescents, adults and seniors who engage in organised or free-style exercise: the Skills Garden is open to all. The Skills Garden tries with its colours, shapes, furnishings and various surfaces to be challenging and attractive for every user. The secondary school grounds redesigned in 2019 not only enhance the quality of breaks between lessons, but also serve as a place for lessons outdoors. Outside school hours, the low-threshold exercise programme is available to all community members and visitors and aims to appeal to all age groups. Interactive elements are designed to encourage young people to exercise outdoors, while seating welcomes less lively and older citizens to take a break. The only town in Nord-Aurdal, Fagernes is the central hub for the entire Valdres region. It attracts many visitors every year with its numerous festivals. Nord-Aurdal Ungdomsskole (NAUS) is a secondary school located in the centre of Fagernes. Within walking distance are the preschool, primary school, a sports park and the outdoor and park area by the Strandefjord, so the grounds of the secondary school are frequented by up to 700 children daily. This recreation area features a running track, parkour and climbing frame, climbing wall, interactive activities, table tennis, volleyball and basketball. The trampolines, swing and enclosed ball area are especially popular with users. The combination of different elements and ample seating offer opportunities both to those seeking exercise as well as to those preferring to sit and relax. The planted area was completed in autumn 2020 with more than 1,500 bushes and trees.
The grounds as a teaching space According to the 2017 parliamentary decision, pupils in grades 1 to 10 have an hour of physi cal activity per day on their timetables. New and innovative methods are required to make the lessons more engaging. The municipality of Fagernes is implementing this decision with the new attractive outdoor area, which makes it possible and easier to teach outdoors, in all subjects. Using the outdoor area for lessons also increases the number of hours of use considerably. Interactive elements combine the play and learning areas. The designers of the Nord-Aurdal Municipality and UNIQA were eager to combine traditional play elements together with innovative electronic play and learning products. UNIQA is a Scandinavian company based in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and specializes in creating indoor and outdoor spaces for learning, play, movement and social interaction. sb 6/2020
The running track with its scoreboard can be used for various tasks and activities that call for timekeeping. To teach a new language, for example, the teacher can say a letter out loud, and the pupil goes to the letter and presses the signal lamp. The teaching system can also be used for spelling, pressing light columns or simply for balancing on the plastic elements. There was a strong focus on looking at the area as a whole. Traditional play elements are combined with in novative electronic play, learning products and green structure. A wide-ranging citizens’ survey identified attractiveness and user-friendliness as essential needs. Pupils, teachers, the school management, various offices of the municipality, the landscape architect and the contractor met for an exchange of ideas. The focus was on sustainable solutions that allow for the diverse and intensive use of the facility while taking account of changing climatic conditions. Contribution outside school hours The community plan gives top priority to creating good conditions for children and adolescents to grow up in. Møteplassen 0-100 makes a significant contribution to sb 6/2020
the achievement of this goal. In 2018, part of a new municipal plan for pre-school and school was adopted, with the emphasis on a good school environment that facili tates learning and development along with well-being and life skills. In the fight against child poverty and to promote participation, the schoolyard is available to children and adolescents outside school hours. In an equipment room on the playground, they can borrow equipment such as balls, sled mats, skittles, tennis, badminton and table tennis rackets and also bicycles, skis and skates. Interactive elements with electronic functions (e.g. stopwatch, sound system) encourage adolescents to organise their own activities in the evenings and at weekends. Meeting place Møteplassen is a schoolyard with a welcoming character, a fully accessible activity arena and a meeting place for educational institutions, sports clubs and local residents. The activity zone offers a coordinated and varied range of activities during the day and in the evening, and encourages self-directed activities all year round. The facility aims to be an attractive and freely accessible meeting place for the entire population – for ages 0 to 100. 51

When architects design indoor and outdoor pools, very special demands are placed on the building materials: they must harmonize with architectural expression, but at the same time meet several practical requirements. Good acoustics, natural resistance to moisture, a flexible design - and plus points in the sustainability report. There are a number of good reasons to install Troldtekt acoustic panels made of lightweight wooden wool panels in indoor pools and facilities in outdoor pools. The open structure of Troldtekt‘s acoustic panels absorbs the sound very effectively. This shortens the reverberation time and reduces disturbing noise in the indoor pool and in the facilities that follow. Troldtekt wood wool lightweight panels are made of the natural material wood as well as cement, which is made of Danish natural lime. NEW TENNIS COURTS FOR SV RHEYDT

After 50 years, the members of SV Rheydt tennis club decided to renovate their tennis courts and switch to a modern, low-maintenance clay court system. The end of August signalled the beginning of the first phase of the work at SV Rheydt in Mönchengladbach.
Sports facility construction is a complex task. Systematic solutions with high design quality are a proven means of accomplishing it. The latest example of this is the brand-new AREA PRO series from the architectural ceramics specialist Agrob Buchtal. The collection satisfies the basic requirement of slip resistance for floor coverings with seven different slip resistance classes, which not only cover wet barefoot a reas, such as pool surrounds, saunas, changing rooms, showers, but also “dry areas” frequented with footwear. This means that restaurants, foyers, sanitary rooms, staircases and much more can also be effectively surfaced.
The new surface is the PORPLASTIC RedClay pro tennis system, which has been the official tennis court at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix tournaments in Stuttgart since 2017. Since being used in Stuttgart this has become an internationally recognised tennis court system. Tell Bau GmbH based in Norden, a long-standing partner of Porplastic, having installed a variety of sports surfaces over the years, was appointed to carry out the installation work in Rheydt. The second phase of the work began in October 2020, when the PORPLASTIC RedClay pro was installed on three further tennis courts and additionally two courts of these courts were also combined with a temporary air dome. An advantage of having this tennis clay court surface outdoors is that it can be played on all year round and very little maintenance is required. Taking climate change into account and thanks to the design of the outdoor courts, they can be used in the winter months when the weather is fine. The PORPLASTIC RedClay pro tennis system conforms to the ITF court pace 1 classification and is also water-permeable, so it can be played on straight after it has rained. The fixed lines on the court enhance safety underfoot and the impact absorption of this durable system is kind to players’ joints and particularly to their knees.
