It is worthwhile to acknowledge the enormous work that hotels have done to achieve a significant reduction in energy consumption per guest. The Maintenance teams of each hotel set out to save energy 3% at the beginning of last year, but thanks to their joint effort, they have managed to save more than 5% by applying effective energy savings techniques and plans tailor-made for each hotel. “With this effort, we have preserve the emission of approximately 12,000 tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the work than more than 200,000 trees do”. Stated Miguel Galeana, Corporate Director of Engineering.

Rod Gahr orporate Director of Entertainment at AMResorts for 14 years. He is responsible for having implemented an ambitious and creative entertainment program throughout the Company that revolutionized the hotel entertainment industry. Pioneer in AMResorts, he was GM of three hotels of the Sunscape brand. His passport has more stamps than anyone in AMResorts.

C

Could you tell us briefly about your career? RG: I started working as a waiter in a luxury golf resort when I was in high school and was mentored by one of the CEO’s of VRI International which allowed me full hands on training in the area of F & B, after High School, I was promoted and transferred to Breckenridge ski resort where I worked my way up to F & B Director of the exclusive Manor Vail Lodge. There I was recruited by Pacific Islands Club to join their team on the tiny island nation of Micronesia in the South Pacific. While working as F&B Director of PIC Guam a 900 room luxury resort, I met the owners of Allegro Resorts and joined Allegro on their new property in Ko Phi Phi Thailand, and then became part of their Corporate Opening team working in 9 different countries in various positions over the next 8 years around the world. Finally in 2001 I had the chance meeting with Alex Zozaya, while working as General Manager of the Allegro Nuevo Vallarta, to become part of a new resort company he was starting, and the rest, well the rest in an 18 year ride on a rocketship!!!! What do you think has been the most satisfying aspects of your current job? RG: Absolutely far and above! Working with my team, watching them grow, mature, and create magical experiences that break the mold of the industry, I’m so proud to have been a part of an amazing family of colleagues and as I always say #PROUDBOSS Tell us about the most challenging moment in your life and how you pulled, or are pulling, yourself out of it? RG: In 1990 I experienced a catastrophic accident while hiking outside of Seattle which required months of hospitalization and 2 years of learning how to walk again and recover, it was an extremely difficult 2 years involving 9 surgeries and proving every Doctor wrong when they told me I’d never walk again!

What's the hardest decision you've made so far? RG: Ask me again in a year….. You have been part of AMResorts since the beginning. How do you envision the future of our company?

RG:Continuing to become Worldwide global leaders and continuing to break the rules and set the bar higher daily!!! You are a person who is appreciated and respected in our company. What are the qualities that a good leader should have?

RG: First and foremost, appreciation and recognition of the team members! I have always believed that how you treat your people sets the tone in how they will treat their teams as we all grow & mature and most importantly I believe that honesty is probably the most important aspect of being a good leader. When you are honest with the people whom you work with, there is never room for error or misunderstanding. You might not always like what you’re being told or telling somebody, but at least everyone knows exactly where you and they stand.

Personal Finances

in vest!

In this article, we are goning talk about personal finance. We will speak specifically of certain criteria that usually escapes us in our planning, or those things we do not do, simply because we don't know how much they can help us.

Several authors recommend that an emergency fund should be equal to 3 months of your expenses. Others suggest 4 months, and some even more conservative authors recommend 6 months. You can decide which scenario feels more suitable and safe for you. •Avoid higher-interest loans. As a reference point, the following are the interest rates in the Dominican Republic:ana: 1. Interest rate on credit cards: 60% per year.

2. Interest rate on personal loans: 15-20% per year.

3. Interest rate on a mortgage loan: 9-13% per year.

4. Interest rate through informal lenders: 240% per year.

Here are some tips to keep control and improve our finances. •Establish a budget: how do we know how much we can spend if we don´t know the total income we have? One of the first steps in controlling our finances is to do an exercise to become aware of what we have, what we want, and what we can afford. •Do not forget annual expenses: annual expenses such as renewal of vehicle insurance, tuition fees, etc. These are examples of disbursements that we make annually, mid-year or quarterly. It Is common to not notice what expenses of this nature are left out of a budget, and how this could lead us to debt. •Check your credit history regularly: Here you can detect if you have a record of a debt that does not belong to you, and if so, you can rectify the situation. •Establish an emergency fund: extremely important! The reality is that there are situations that we can not predict or plan in our budgets, such as medical emergencies, the loss of a job, etc. These type of events can at some point affect us in life. This is why it is necessary to establish an emergency fund.

•INVEST! To invest we do not have to count on a giant sum of money. For example, once we have established an emergency fund, we can choose to place it in an investment fund, take out a financial certificate, approach a broker and see the different products they offer. One thing is clear, having the money in a bank account, or kept under the mattress of the bed, does not generate interest in our favor. With this, we can conclude that financing through credit cards as well as through informal lenders, is a terrible decision. Something important to note is that the credit cards apply the interest to the amount used, not the amount owed, for example, if we had expenses in the month for $ 5,000 and pay $ 3,000, only subtracting to pay $ 2,000, the 60% interest is applied on the $ 5,000 not on the amount of $ 2,000. I hope these tips will bring forth more personal finance experts and of course large investment ones as well.

THINK, ACT AND WORK SAFE

Rubén Caraballo Gerente de Estándares e Innovación R.D.

ELECTRICITY RISKS AND SIGNS By the end of the 19th century, Nicolas Tesla succeeded in convincing the multi-millionaire investor George Westinghouse, of the effectiveness of alternating current as an invention that would later transform the world. In his career while striving towards success, Tesla had to compete with one of the world's greatest inventors, Thomas Alva Edison. Edison used the "deadly force" theory of alternating current to attempt discrediting the invention of his opponent, who was once his employee. This led Tesla to implement security measures to make electricity less deadly when arriving in American homes. Among these measures, we find the Transformer. The Transformer considerably lowers the voltage before reaching any houses. This is a very interesting story that I invite you to read and learn. Today, I want to share about the dangers related to electricity in our hotels. We will get to know how electricity works, as well as some associated risks and dangers.

It is extremely important to know the risks to which we could be exposed. For instance, in order to give you an idea; your hotel most likely uses high voltage (12,470V), medium voltage (7,200V) and low voltage (110-220V) or 480 volts. For potential risks, there are security standards such as NFPA-70 and NFPA-70E, as well as specific sign posting. I want you to help us verify that they are being properly used in your hotel. I take this opportunity to remind you that all rooms and electrical panels must be properly closed and with proper sign posting. Now, as a practice, I invite you to observe the following three signs below. Do you think they apply the same for all cases? Do you dare to identify them in your hotel?

Some of the risks related to electricity are linked to: Fire. They are usually caused by high temperatures reached on electrical components at a certain time. This can happen for several of the following reasons: short circuit, overload, loose connection elements, poor condition of components, among other reasons. Electric shock. It is an injury produced by the effect of electric current on a human or an animal. It occurs when making contact with electricity, causing serious injuries and even death. Electric arc. It is the passage of energy through ionized air. It can cause serious injury and instant death. The most common causes of electric arc are dust or impurities in the circuits, unsafe approach, falling tools, over-voltage, failure in equipment maintenance, or exposure to energized parts.

We appreciate your ideas, experiences and suggestions, please share them at the following email address: rcaraballo@amresorts.com.

UERTO

LATA Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata was founded in 1502 by Nicolรกs de Ovando. In 1974 Puerto Plata was chosen as a tourist landmark by presidential decree, for its exquisite coastal wonders. In the city's downtown, you can find the largest English Victorian Style collection of buildings since 1857. Their homes are characterized by their artistic design and their pastel colors.

Puerto Plata is a destination with strong multicultural roots, it is still one of the favorite destinations for visitors, where they will find the perfect combination of history, mountains, green valleys, rivers and a wide diversity of beaches and adventures.

The 27 Puddles of the Damajagua

The most precious adventure treasure of Puerto Plata, is the waterfalls of the 27 puddle of Damajagua. They offer a full day of hiking through thick forests, crossing bridges and discovering the Dominican flora.

Also known as Cayo Paraíso, this sandbar is located in the middle of the bright blue ocean, with fine white sand and shallow waters that are full of tropical fish. It is an ideal location for snorkelers of any level.

San Felipe Fort

San Felipe Port was built by the Spanish in the sixteenth century to defend the country’s north coast from the English, Dutch, and French pirates in search of abundant gold and silver in the area. It was completed in 1577 and is considered one of the most important colonial military structures in the Caribbean.

Puerto Plata Malecon

The residents of Puerto Plata proudly declare that theirs is the most beautiful beachfront boulevard in the Dominican Republic. You will understand why, when you see the multiple white sand beaches that line the main avenue of the city.

BEAUTY

TIPS

Teresa Torres,

Director of SpasRegional Mexico Caribe.

Make your own Spa treatments at home Natural anti-wrinkle: To keep the skin of the neck smooth and prevent the appearance of wrinkles, I recommend that you apply a layer of honey with a cloth on the area. Let it rest for fifteen minutes, then remove and rinse with plenty of cold water. This treatment can be repeated every 20 days. Tired eyelids: Bags, swollen eyelids, and dark circles are the product of a sleepless night. To soften the look and reduce inflammation of the area, apply cotton disks embedded in herbal tea on the eyelids, then let them rest for 10 minutes and remove. Homemade Aloe Vera mask. This mask provides vitamins, minerals, enzymes, hydrates your skin, reaffirms it and is anti-inflammatory. Cut a leaf from an Aloe plant, slice it in half and rub the containing aloe pulp on your face or other desired skin surface. Let it rest for 15 minutes and clean your face/skin with plenty of cold water.
