THINK, ACT, AND WORK SAFE

Think, Act, and

Work Safe Por: RubĂŠn Caraballo Standards and Innovation Manager D.R.

Pink October We Are All Exposed to Breast Cancer desgraciadamente, todos estamos expuestos a ella I would like to join the educational campaign on Breast cancer Awareness Month in order to sensitize about the importance of prevention to win the battle against this silent enemy. Breast cancer is one of the main causes of death in women all over the world. It actually represents 16% of all female cancers. It is estimated that 519,000 women died from breast cancer in 2004 and, although this cancer is considered a disease of the developed world, the majority of deaths (69%) from this cause are registered in developing countries (WHO, Global Burden Morbidity, 2004).

TO KNOW: Each year, more than 462,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the Americas, and nearly 100,000 die from this disease. If current trends continue, by 2030, the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer is projected to increase by 34% in the Americas. In Latin America and the Caribbean, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and is the second one in mortality. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have some of the highest rates of risk of death from breast cancer, which highlights the health inequities in the region. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the highest percentage of deaths from breast cancer occurs in women under 65 years old (56%) compared to the United States and Canada (37%).

15

THINK, ACT, AND WORK SAFE

IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTION BREAST CANCER EARLY DETECTION, ALONG WITH ADVANCES IN TREATMENT, SAVES LIVES. HOWEVER MANY COUNTRIES IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN CONTINUE TO HAVE LIMITED ACCESS TO THESE INTERVENTIONS.

How can we avoid it? We could have an effect of long-term reduction in the incidence of breast cancer by modifying risk factors, as well as effective integrated prevention of noncommunicable diseases that promotes healthy food, physical activity, and the control of alcohol consumption. We can say that these five elements are fundamental:

2.

Reduce sugars in your diet.

1.

Eat a balanced diet high in fiber.

3.

Do some workout, at least 30 minutes daily.

5.

4.

Avoid cigarettes and alcohol.

Maintain an adequate weight.

Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer Together! You can share with the Health and Safety Committee of your hotel the ideas to promote a healthy life, as well as the prevention of breast cancer. We want to hear from you, so share your ideas, experiences, and suggestions at rcaraballo@amresorts.com

GETTING TO KNOW JUAN PABLO PUERTA

Getting to know

JUAN PABLO PUERTA “Gratitude fosters happiness Describe yourself in 3 virtues

Prudence

Intention, action, and consequence, always aiming at the common good).

Generosity

Giving without expecting in return. The more you give, the more you receive.

Gratitude

Gratitude is key to happiness, as well as being thankful for the simplicity of life. 17

GETTING TO KNOW JUAN PABLO PUERTA

The true leader is the one you need when is gone. Could you share with us an experience that marked your personal and professional life? Being a professional cyclist marked my life, and taught me values and virtues such as discipline, effort, gratitude, and conviction leadership, without imposition.

What is your purpose in life? The virtue of prudence, under the concept of intention, action, and consequence, always aiming at the common good. What did you do before arriving at AMResorts? I was financially responsible for a recognized renewable energy brand.

What are you most proud of? The way I’ve learned to enjoy the simple things in life.

What do you think will be your added value for the company? On a professional level, to prepare all AMResorts finances, control, cash management, etc., for its growth in the coming years. On a personal level, create this culture: "information is knowledge and this knowledge must be offered to our people in the organization so that they can improve their jobs every day".

What is your greatest achievement out of your professional career? What is your greatest achievement out of your professional career? What would you be if you wouldn't be an Industrial Engineer or a Mathematician? Cyclist.

18

GETTING TO KNOW JUAN PABLO PUERTA

What are you learning right now? Patience.

How do you see yourself in 5 years? Grateful, healthy, riding a bicycle, standing by my wife, and generating value wherever the path of life takes me

What should a leader not have? Should not be authoritarian, because the team would follow him/her by imposition. A leader must empower and assign tasks.

What virtues make a good leader different? Prudence (intention, action, and consequence, always aiming at the common good. To hear. Free speech to build knowledge together. Make people believe in themselves, not in their leaders. The true leader is the one you need when is gone.

Do you consider yourself a good leader? Let the others say it. What quote would you give us? Big dreams are made by small ones, so my goal is to have day-to-day “little” dreams to reach my biggest dream. Gratitude fosters happiness.

Years of experience: 16 years. Profession: Industrial Engineering and Mathematician. Place of bith: Bogota, Colombia. Favorite sport: Cyclist. Favorite food: Japanese. Passtime: Cycling, reading, and thinking. What you like the most about you: The ability to reinvent me. What you don’t like about you: Inflexibility to improvisation. Favorite destination to go: Cusco, Machu Picchu, Peru. Favorite movie: The Motorcycle Diaries. Idol: Siddharta Gautama (Budha).

LET´S GET SOCIAL

Let´s get

SOCIAL! Pink Social Media Pink is possibly one of the most relaxing colors in the color palette. The pink color invites us to be kind, loving, and even sweet. It is born from the combination of red and white, two psychologically opposite colors, and from whose combination arises a color that acquires qualities of both with a very positive connotation. As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a terrible disease that is the most common among women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in this segment of the population.

Without a doubt, receiving a breast cancer diagnosis can be devastating. Instagram is a social network in which we can really see the echo of good vibes, positive thoughts, unity, and support for people diagnosed with breast cancer. Here are some hashtags that I suggest you follow, that I am sure will change your perception about this condition:

Did you know That the first pink ribbon was introduced by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation? She gave pink visors to breast cancer survivors who have been running in the Marathon for the Cure since the late 1990s. The pink ribbon is worn not only by diagnosed people but as a symbol of support.

LET´S GET SOCIAL

#PinkRibbon y #CancerSucks With the aim of solidarity, this hashtag promotes breast cancer awareness in a tone that lifts the spirits and morale.

#GoingFlat After having a mastectomy, women usually chose breast reconstruction, but there is a movement in which it is decided to remove both breasts were women proudly show their photos without shame and with pride of being survivors.

#BusyLivingWithMets It is used by women who have been diagnosed for the second time or diagnosed with breast cancer metastases. The goal is to lift the spirits and show support through good days and bad.

I hope you can take the time to look at some of the posts where these hashtags are used, and thus together change the taboo of not talking about breast cancer. Because we have to talk about it to raise awareness among more people because timely detection is important and saves lives.

#YoungAdultCancer It is rare for women under 45-year-old to be diagnosed with breast cancer and it can be very devastating. This hashtag provides a sense of unity and understanding among those diagnosed from the younger age groups.

Together we can!

#BCCWW Women share the feeling of what it feels like to live with a breast cancer diagnosis in the tone “you are not alone”.

HOST CITY

HOST CITY:

Puerto Morelos

A quiet haven between Cancun and Playa del Carmen When it comes to talking about Puerto Morelos, in Quintana Roo, we immediately imagine a haven between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which in addition to having the second largest coral reef in the world, has the magic and mysticism of the Mayan jungle, as well as the route of the cenotes. THE CENOTES It refers to a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. At some point, some of them were caves and after the last glacial period, they were flooded, thus preserving treasures, offerings, and even Mayan archaeological remains. By the way, the Mayan community considered these places sacred because they were the entrance to the underworld or "Xibalbá" (hidden place). In Quintana Roo, we have the largest underwater cavernous maze system in the world, which has been the inspiration for the construction of Deams Spa by Pevonia®, by our Dreams® Natura Resort & Spa.

The name of this millenary system is Sac Actun (white cave), which has currently been studied within its 347 km. It also has registered 248 cenotes with 198 archaeological contexts. If this system is linked with other similar, it would have more than 1,000 km long. Here you have enough reasons why we feel so proud to present Puerto Morelos as our host city, and we hope that all of you have the opportunity to visit it and discover the natural wonders and the geoarchaeological treasure across the territory.

WELLNESS

Wellness BY David Pritchard Health & Performance Coach Apple Leisure Group

ADOPT AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET Foods to avoid if you're trying to tame inflammation include common health offenders like added sugars, refined grains, hydrogenated oils, and processed foods of any kind.

AVOID ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS Chemicals in our food, water, and homes can alter DNA and gene expression to change the way breast cells develop, making tissues susceptible to cancer.

SCIENCE-BACKED THINGS YOU CAN DO TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER This month we decided to share the top science-backed ways to reduce our risk of developing this disease, which will affect one in eight women during their lifetime. The good news is that treatments are becoming more effective and less invasive, and we're understanding more and more every day what we can do to prevent this disease.

GO TO THE DOCTOR If you haven't read Dr. Sheeva Talebian's breast cancer story, now is the time. She's thriving today because of her own vigilant self- breast exams, which led her to go to the doctor early, which likely saved her life.

STOP SMOKIN, AND KEEP ALCOHOL IN TAKE TO A MINIMUM We all know that smoking is bad for our health and increases our risk of virtually every type of cancer and health problem. But when it comes to preventing breast cancer, it's also important to keep alcohol to a minimum.

MANAGE STRESS Getting eight hours of sleep each night is a great defense against stress. A full night of sleep is essential to proper immune function. It also affects your mood, memory and ability to focus, experts say.

DON´T FORGET SCREENING Despite some controversy, studies show that breast cancer screening with mammography saves lives. It doesn’t help prevent cancer, but it can help find cancer early when it’s most treatable.

MOVE YOUR BODY Go on a brisk walk after dinner, join a gym, pick up that tennis racket, take a dance class, or go on a jog with a friend. All of it counts toward your health and against your risk for breast cancer. 39
