PANTONE® 2021 Colors of The Year PANTONE Ultimate Gray & Illuminating

PANTONE® has announced two colors as the 2021 Colors of the Year Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. Ultimate Gray provides a neutral foundation for any room with dependable shades of natural elements, while Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow evoking a sense of friendliness and happiness. Together, they provide warmth and strength and encourage feelings of resilience that withstand the test of time. Either color pairs nicely with cobalt blue or aqua; going bold with pops of red and orange really make Illuminating stand out. For even bolder looks, infuse black; it adds punch with the warming yellow shade and intensifies the calming gray. We’re sharing a few paint colors that relate to the 2021 colors of the year. Illuminating would work best as an accent wall or for painting stripes to add pattern to a wall. It could also be fun in the right context for an accent piece of furniture to add a fun pop of color. We highly suggest staying away from painting an entire room in an Illuminating yellow shade. It would definitely be too intense. Ultimate Gray is a beautiful neutral that could be used just about anywhere.

PRO TIP: Always sample the paint in your space before diving in and painting the entire room. Just because it looks fabulous in your friend’s home, doesn’t mean it will look equally as stunning in yours. There are many factors which influence how paint looks in a space.

Follow our “Ultimate Gray and Illuminating" board on Pinterest for more inspiration on using this beautiful color in your home. http://www.pinterest.com/ibbdesign/ultimategrayandilluminating

A DINING ROOM BY WILL SMITH, IBB DESIGNER

will@ibbdesign.com | @willtsmith on Instagram Renderings by Daniel M. Chavez

A big part of our job as designers is to help people come up with solutions for challenging spaces. “I have this room that I’m not sure what to do with.” “There’s a room in my house that is meant to function as X but I’d rather it function as Y; how do we do this?” These are topics I encounter often. The most common space that confounds people is the formal dining room. As we evolve as a culture, the necessity

d e n i g Reima

of this space is becoming more obsolete. So what do we do when the home we love was built with this space? We can turn it into a sitting room, a play space for the kids, or another living room. But to be honest, I personally love the idea of leaning into its intended purpose. The formal dining room has roots in a common practice that has yet to evolve out of fashion: entertaining. Invite your friends over, make a delicious meal, and enjoy this space for what it is meant to be. When I was asked to design a space for this article, the very first room that came to mind was a dining room. I love the glamour you can provide in this space. Growing up, my family made many trips to my grandmother’s home in a little Texas town called Rosebud. With a population of less than 2,000, a downtown strip of old, abandoned retail shops, hardware stores, and antique malls, and acres and acres of central Texas farmland, Rosebud looks like it fell off the side of the Earth and landed in the middle of nowhere. But my grandmother’s house was a respite from the wreckage. She meticulously maintained her gardens and landscaping: the facade was always fresh, with the grass mowed, trees trimmed, and topiaries groomed. Inside the

18 IBB AT HOME

home was a room clad in white, a formal dining/ sitting room with one purpose: to entertain and impress. I drew inspiration from my grandmother’s dining room to design the space you see here. It’s a play on neutrals and textures meant to blend the old with the new with a subtle pop of color in the way we love to do it at IBB. I chose a stunning gold leaf wallpaper to add a soft glow to the ceiling that reflects its warm tone across a palette of neutral textiles and a gentle textured wallpaper to take the “dreaded” white walls up a notch by reflecting light and casting shadows. To blend the old with the new, a modern blownglass chandelier hangs above a traditionally inspired round dining table in a modern gray finish with brass accents to mimic the ceiling. Neutral skirted chairs add softness and more texture on top of the custom cut rug. A pop of color from the Mermaid Blue Silk draperies, part of our IBB Drapery Panel Program, and a beautiful fuchsia orchid arrangement from The Shay Geyer Collection provide a little interest without taking away from the idea of neutral glamour. Another pop of color is drawn from the art above the buffet, and a large mirrored China Cabinet reflects all of these elements from every angle, while hiding

a collection of treasured dishes and flatware inside. In this dining room, I envision a family of hardworking and down-to-earth people taking advantage of their collection of unique serving-ware and recipes, hosting their beloved friends for an evening of laughter while showcasing a little bit of glamour--not unlike the gatherings that took place in the dining room I grew up coveting in my grandmother’s small town Texas country home.

RUG CLEANING AND

MAINTENANCE TIPS BY JUSTIN YECK, FEIZY

VP OF SALES, MARKETING AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT & DESIGN | jyeck@feizy.com | www.feizy.com

We’ve all been there. You invest in a beautiful statement piece for your space and suddenly little Fido has decided to make it his own. Don’t fret! Feizy Rugs is here to help you get that spot out and protect your investment. As someone who has pets and a messy husband, the tips below have been a lifesaver!

FAST FIXES Food and Beverage: Vacuum dry spills thoroughly on machine-made rugs. For wet spills, use 1/4 teaspoon of mild liquid detergent with a cup of water.

First things first: Use caution when cleaning your rug. Always start with an inconspicuous area. If you are uncertain about your ability to effectively clean the rug on your own, we recommend you first consult an expert. IBB can help direct you to a rug cleaning professional near you.

Red Wine: Pouring salt over spills on all dark liquids will absorb the liquid like a sponge.

Everyday accidents happen, but that doesn’t mean your rug’s appearance has to suffer. Here are six steps to ensure your rug won’t pay the price of mishaps: 1) ACT FAST 2) BLOT - NEVER RUB 3) CLEAN - EDGE TO CENTER 4) DO NOT SOAK 5) PAT AND FAN DRY 6) BRUSH PILE

Paint, Oil, and Grease: Use nail polish remover. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Pet Messes: Use a vinegar solution, 1 cup white vinegar to 2 cups of water. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

VACUUMING Vacuum Regularly... The number one way to ensure rug integrity is vacuuming. Vacuuming regularly helps prevent dirt on the surface of the rug from filtering down into the pile where it can accumulate and cause increased wear. Vacuum once a week for light traffic, one to three times a week for moderate traffic, and daily for heavy or pet traffic. Occasionally, vacuum the back of the rug to remove the fine grit that may damage the foundation of the rug, and remember to vacuum both sides of reversible rugs to prevent dirt from settling into the fibers.

...But Carefully Many of today’s vacuums are high powered, and standard vacuuming can pull threads through the rug backing. Vacuums equipped with a power brush create a raking effect on the rug and can weaken the knots. Ideally, use a canister vacuum (or the handheld attachment on an upright vacuum) to clean your rug.

20 IBB AT HOME

Photos courtesy of Feizy

Remember, brooms and manual sweepers are just as effective and are often a safer maintenance option.

Beater Bars When using an upright vacuum, disengage the beater bar, as this can pull fibers from the rug and cause premature deterioration. If you are unable to manually turn off the beater bar, set the vacuum to its highest setting and gently set the vacuum on the rug.

Fringe Avoid vacuuming the fringe on your rug. The fibers can be caught and destroyed by the rotating mechanism of the vacuum’s brush. Continuous friction on a fringed or serged edge can deteriorate the fibers over time. Fringed edges are sensitive, and a handheld attachment is ideal for routine cleaning. Should the fringe of your rug become damaged, seek immediate assistance from a reputable rug repair workshop.

designers clearly have the upper hand when it comes to designing spaces that consider our clients’ fur babies. After all, it's our pets that often spend the most time on our furnishings (allowed or not). For our spring issue, we wanted to take a deeper look at some posh pooches for a better insight into the lives of a designer dog. This is Gigi and Zoe Geyer’s story. Since I was a little kid, my family has always had at least one dog in our home. I can’t imagine life without a dog. Gigi and Zoe both turned three in December. Gigi is a Cavachon, and Zoe is a mini Goldendoodle. Jaylie picked out Gigi, and Brooklyn picked out Zoe. They joined our family shortly after our Boxer, Roxy, was diagnosed with cancer. They gave her new life and gave us a full year with her before she passed away. What a blessing it was for them to get training from the best dog ever!

If you’ve followed #teamIBB for a while, then you know we have many animal-obsessed people. We joke that it’s almost a requirement for our staff to have a furry companion. With a team full of animal lovers, our

22 IBB AT HOME

They are definitely posh pooches! As they are our beloved fur babies, they have free reign over our domain. When designing our home, I selected performance and indoor/outdoor fabrics to use on our upholstery, knowing that they would need to hold up to constant puppy snuggles. Gigi loves to lounge on the backs of the sofa and chair cushions. I make sure to fluff the cushions regularly to help keep their shape and extend the life of them. Zoe’s favorite spot is on one of the chaise lounges or in someone’s lap. Many indoor/outdoor fabrics are bleach cleanable, but for those that are not, I keep a bottle of Crypton cleaner handy to tackle messes made from muddy paws and other puppy oopsies. Many people wonder about having wood floors with dogs. Our hardwoods are lightly scraped with the grain. It still offers a very clean look and also helps camouflage everyday wear and tear. Puppy tip: When you’re house training new puppies, roll up your rugs and put them in storage until they’re completely trained. This will hopefully prevent ruining any of them due to accidents from your pooch. Crypton can help get rid of many stains, but always check the fiber content of the material and follow the cleaning directions. “Home is where your dog runs to greet you.”

Calming colors will help us refresh after the wild ride of 2020. Everyone has the urge to conjure up calm in 2021. Lighter walls can help you relax in almost any room you choose. Lighter paint colors often will allow you to apply the same color to the ceiling. Be sure to use a 50% less tint if you wish to have the same color on the ceiling but with a less intense hue to give it some separation.

Predicted color trends suspect the return of a warm, neutral palette embracing gray and beige as well as subtle off-white colors. We can already see that with Pantone’s official 2021 colors of the year with Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. Benjamin Moore’s 2021 color of Benjamin Moore the year, Aegean Teal, is a slighter Aegean Teal grayed-out blue. Marrying 2136-40 Aegean Teal with Benjamin Moore’s Potters Clay is a sure winner should you chose to Benjamin Moore Potters Clay add a punch of color to your 1221 comforting neutral palette.

A bedroom should be designed for rest and relaxation, and choosing the right paint color can help make that happen. For a peaceful and tranquil bedroom, SherwinWilliams’s On The Rocks with muted undertones is a perfect warm gray that Sherwin-Williams changes with the light. It’s soothing and On The Rocks restful but far from boring. You can carry 7671 it over to the primary bathroom for a continuous cohesive, calming look. Sherwin-Williams’s Mindful Gray is also a perfect 2021 color choice. It can be serene and calm or playful and bright depending on the bedding, accessories, and lighting in the room.

Sherwin-Williams Mindful Gray 7016

Sherwin-Williams's Naval paint on the Sherwin-Williams cabinets creates a grounding, calm navy complement to the warm gray walls and Naval gold hardware. 6244 Don’t forget to always check your paint colors in the room you plan on using them in since what looks great in one room, may not have the results you expect in another. Happy painting in 2021!

2021 INTERIOR

DESIGN TRENDS BY HUNTINGTON REMODELING

HuntingtonRemodeling.com/Contact Photography Courtesy of Huntington Remodeling 2020 was an unprecedented year marked by uncertainty, change, growth, and innovation. Many of us share a similar sentiment of relief in leaving the chaotic year behind, while embracing the reality that many of the changes sparked by the pandemic outbreak back in March will likely follow us into the New Year. One of the most notable shifts resulting from the pandemic was people spending more time at home. Going into 2021, we expect to see this trend remain strong as people continue to work from home, cook meals at home, and take comfort in the safety and security of their homes. With a growing emphasis on the home and its functionality, many people have questioned the usability of their spaces. After all, studies show that the average person uses only 40% of their livable area at home. As a leader in the home remodeling space, we predict the trends for 2021 will be characterized by the following four categories: the return of warm neutral colors, the desire for purposeful spaces, new and fresh design, and a desire for comfortable living spaces. Continue reading for a more in-depth take on the latest home design trends.

1.

Warm Neutrals & Earthy Tones

Over the last few years, many homes have adopted a modern all white and gray color palette, a combination

26 IBB AT HOME

which can often leave spaces feeling a bit cold. In 2021, we will see the return of warm and earthy tones, breathing new life into starkly white spaces. Gray can continue to be a go-to hue in a sense, with its newest counterpart “greige” serving as a tasteful blend of warm and cool neutrals. Whether used as accents or ma jor colors in a palette, burgundy, earthy greens, cranberry, and natureinspired browns will become very popular. Even our forever-trending blue hues will project a warmer undertone. Additionally, we’ll see the use of neutral colors with vibrant pops of color throughout all areas of the home.

2.

Purposeful Repurposed Spaces

The pandemic has changed the way people work, entertain, and live. Creating dedicated home offices/ workspaces has become a priority with so many people still working from home. Additionally, missing out on theaters, gyms, and restaurants has left people craving these activities from the safety and comfort of their own homes. As a result, many homeowners are enlarging and/or upgrading their kitchens to create more functional

spaces to entertain. Larger family rooms, accessible dining rooms, and outdoor spaces that can be used year-round have become quite desirable. Many homeowners are also considering investing in enclosed patios, indoor-outdoor living spaces, casitas, and pool houses for entertaining as well as for getting some fresh air and spending time in nature.

3.

New & Fresh Design

For 2021 we expect to see a continued growth in livable luxury and sustainable design. Homeowners will want to see more innovative design styles that use technology and have easy-to-clean surfaces and fabrics. Livable luxury will provide beautiful spaces that are both functional and inviting. The use of natural materials such as wood, whicker, rattan, caning, and exotic marbles will be a popular way of creating interest in the home. Patterned and bold wallpaper will end drab walls, and glossy millwork, warm brass, and gold metals will continue to be a popular way to warm up renovated spaces.

4.

Warm & Cozy Spaces

After weeks and months of spending more time at home than ever, people have realized that their homes should be their sanctuaries, where they can relax, restore, and retreat from the chaos of the world outside. With sterile spaces trending out, classical and traditional styles with modern touches will be more sought after. Traditional spaces tend to have symmetry and softness to them and can be very personalized. Even minimalism and modern homes will have more warmth with the use of textures and patterns in furnishings and unique built-in cabinetry. Additionally, we will see textured and/or exotic natural stones in fireplaces and large seating areas that are comfortable, but still luxurious. Feel more at home in your home. Work with Huntington Remodeling to thoughtfully transform your space this New Year. When you work with Huntington, you get the resources and reliability of a large company with the touch of a custom builder. Your dedicated project team will develop custom renovation plans tailored to fit your needs, lifestyle, and design preferences, and then bring your vision to life using the highest quality materials and most advanced construction techniques. Give us a call or visit HuntingtonRemodeling.com to get started today.

Working with a

DESIGNER

through the Build Process SHANNON GIDNEY, IBB DESIGNER & SALES MANAGER shannon@ibbdesign.com @designershannongidneyibb on Instagram

Photography By Audrie Dollins Building a new home or even remodeling an existing home is a complex process with many detailed decisions. Often, many of these decisions must be made upfront, even prior to the construction phase. As designers, effectively selecting well-thought-out, cohesive, and timeless designs is what we deliver in our design process. We are adept at tying our clients’

visions together and delivering an ideal space that is both visually appealing and functional. We embrace every portion of the process, as each step truly affects the final product and can save valuable time and money. There are many advantages in working with an experienced designer, from the beginning of the architectural phase, through the selections process, and finally to the furnishings. Our expanded knowledge of the remodel/building process helps to tie in all of those special details while striving to exceed expectations in the final project. At IBB, we offer a complete “turn-key” design experience by being uniquely equipped with both a dedicated showroom for building/remodeling as well as one dedicated to furnishings and décor. Our design center showcases items such as tile, carpet, countertops, and paints, while our furnishings showroom offers 90,000 square feet of furniture, art, accessories, and rugs galore! So, how does the process work? For starters, getting to know our clients and how they live in the space, as well as the ideas they bring to the table, are crucial to the process. This allows us to make educated decisions, but most important, allows us to take those ideas and translate them to reality. And though not architects, it is important that designers are involved in the finalizing stages of construction documents. We like to review how rooms flow and plan furnishing layouts to confirm ample space, examine door swings, locate floor plugs, as well as review lighting plans. After years of experience implementing furnishings, it is clear that designer involvement early on in the building process is most beneficial for the end result. Once plans are finalized with the architect, it is time to start selecting finishes and fixtures. We begin by customizing a document that outlines a comprehensive list of all needed selections. This document ensures your contractor has all they need

28 IBB AT HOME

to bid out and order the correct products down to the last detail. IBB’s Design Center uniquely offers a wide variety of options in regards to selections. Having these resources all under one roof saves time and energy during the selection process. Now, once the finish-out portion has been submitted, the real fun can begin: the furnishings and window coverings! Having a furniture layout in hand and the base colors of the home selected, we can start to present the furnishing options that will best fit our clients’ lifestyles and budgets. IBB sources from hundreds of vendors and visits furniture markets all across the U.S. to find a unique blend of furnishings that are sure to fit any need. We are a unique “boutique” experience in that IBB sells directly off of the showroom floor, unlike many others that back stock several of the same item. Most all of our items are also customizable, meaning we can special order in endless amounts of fabrics or finishes to make a piece uniquely yours. In addition to furnishings, our in-house drapery workroom allows us super-competitive pricing and the opportunity to expedite projects efficiently. With an endless amount of fabrics on hand, we are sure to find the perfect one. IBB’s drapery program is also turn-key in that we measure, sew, and install your drapery while supplying the fabrics, trims, and hardware. I always say draperies put the finishing

touch on any project. Similarly, rugs and accessories are also plentiful around here! We have hundreds of pillows that we joke multiply overnight and aisles of carefully organized lamps and accessories in our warehouse. We also offer the largest rug sample wall in the Metroplex, showing hundreds of rugs of all price points, from machine-made to custom one-ofa-kind hand knotted options. As you can see, the addition of an IBB Designer to the building or remodel process can be priceless. With all of this added value, the investment of having a designer on your team will pay for itself in cost, time, and avoided stress during this detailed process. All, of course, while having a lot of fun along the way!

DESIGNER TIPS

LAYER UP ! LAYER UP ! LAYER UP! BY MEGHAN SEBREN, IBB VISUAL MERCHANDISER meghan@ibbdesign.com | @meghansebren on Instagram

If you live in Texas, you know how unpredictable our climate can be - 70 degrees one day and 39 the next. That makes it hard to keep your bed linens on the same page as the weather. The easiest way to always be prepared is to layer up those linens! The first layer is the sheets. If you get hot when you sleep, buy sheets that have natural fibers, as they breathe easier. Crisp percale sheets work best. The next layer is a coverlet. They are lightweight and are perfect to use with just your sheets on a hot night. They are also a great way to incorporate pattern and are easily changeable if you want to mix up your bedding. The next is a duvet. These are filled with an insert that is usually down-filled. The inserts come in a wide range of weights – from super thick to lightweight. In warmer months, you can fold up the duvet at the end of the bed. If you have a patterned coverlet, choose a duvet with a more toned-down look. Now on to pillows! I know the last thing we want to do as we are ready to fall into bed is remove tons of accent pillows. You can achieve the same look by choosing pillows that are functional. Euro shams are the larger square

30 IBB AT HOME

pillows in the back that provide support for reading or watching TV. Lumbar or bolster pillows can also provide lower back support. You can layer in your sleeping pillows in front or behind the euro shams. And of course, if you can’t live without a bunch of accent pillows, a storage bench at the end of the bed is a quick and easy way to hide them. Lastly are the blankets and throws. Having one handy at the end of the bed is a great way to add color and texture. And no need to fold; just drape it over the end of the bed. Layering your linens on your bed allows versatility with both function and style. And of course, you always know where to come for all your bedding needs!

SIMPLE STEPS

IN THE HOME INTERIOR DESIGN PROCESS BY PAM HOOD, IBB DESIGNER pam@ibbdesign.com

Designing your new home interiors or refreshing your current home décor can be a daunting task if done on your own. If we have learned anything from 2020, it is that our home has to not only be functional, but also should make us feel happy, especially since we are spending so much more time there. Working with a designer can help navigate the design process using these 10 simple steps.

Select and meet with an interior designer who best suits your personality.

The designer then draws a floorplan for rooms showing furniture placement and size, traffic flow, and highlighted focal walls.

1 3

Your designer will also have options to special order unique items that may not be readily available in the store.

First off, thank you so much to everyone who took the time to join in #jorysdesignchallenge! It’s been so fun seeing how many creative and talented followers we have! My favorite part about this challenge was getting to see how a different set of eyes can throw a whole different spin on a space just by playing with colors and patterns. I always preach how important it is to invest in clean, classic stapes, and this drives that

right home, as you can see how the exact same space with the same structures can pull anywhere from nautical chic, to rustic modern, to feminine and eclectic! While this was a genuine struggle, and I sure did have to pick my colleagues’ brains, the winner of this design challenge (by a narrow margin I might add) was @depression.and.art.obsession! Even though I’m pretty sure this amazing artist was just showing off some insane rendering skills, this fully realized palette really spoke to me! I just can’t say no to a moody-toned room, but offsetting dark walls with the bright textiles and case goods and then softening everything up with the mix of floral motifs and pops of blush was just such an interesting juxtaposition that I kept going back! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on which ones you all loved, and I would still love to see other perspectives! Brooklyn’s Room Refresh BY SHAY GEYER, IBB OWNER & DESIGNER shay@ibbdesign.com | @designershay on Instagram Renderings by Daniel M. Chavez

When you’re an interior designer, you should not be surprised when your children ask for a room refresh for Christmas. At least they come by it honestly! I know my mom can attest to the fact that I was constantly wanting to change things up in my room when I was a kid. Maybe this is a sign that my girls might actually want to go into design - This mommy can only hope! So, we’re switching things up a bit, and I’ve let the girls lead the direction of their design decisions.

36 IBB AT HOME

I’d love to give you a sneak peek into Brooklyn’s new room design. We’re not changing it all, but we’ve selected new elements that will give her a fresh new look that fits her style. We decided on a palette of blush, black, and silver. She’s my pink girl, but she wanted a softer more “calming” and “sophisticated” look. We are painting all of her trim and doors white. It was all hot pink before. Her bed wall will be wallpapered in a blush metallic cork-patterned paper, and we painted

the rest of the walls in Sherwin-Williams Innocence. We are keeping her original nightstands and bed but are re-covering her bed in a blush performance fabric. She’s a big fan of my Madame Butterfly fabric, so we are making two pillows out of the blush color way for her bedding. She loves cozy textures, so her center pillow will be a blush faux fur pillow. A new rug under her bed will ground the space and add tonal pattern. We are pairing new pendant lighting and mirrors with her nightstands. Metallic sheer drapery will hang from polished nickel and acrylic hardware. New desk and study area: We moved her turquoise chest into the hallway by her room so that we could put a desk in her room. This will give her a designated workspace of her own as well as an area to create artwork. She loves to draw and paint! We are re-covering her hot pink chair with a black cut velvet fabric in a butterfly pattern. Above her desk will be a neon sign spelling out her name combined with a display of some of her favorite art creations. Bathroom: Brooklyn chose a new marble-patterned wallpaper to cover all of the walls in her bathroom. We also painted her vanity in Sherwin-Williams Innocence. We took down her fabric valance and panels around her bathtub and will be doing a frameless glass shower door. We are keeping her previous vanity chair, but we will be re-covering it in the same blush performance fabric that we are using on her bed. It’s bleach cleanable, so it’s a great choice to use. I cannot wait to see the finished transformation! Brooklyn is so excited about her new look. We’re running into many back orders and delays, but it will all be worth the wait! Stay tuned for the big reveal and exciting giveaways we have planned from several vendors we are using in her room refresh. Follow me on Instagram for more details and to keep up with the progress of her transformation @designershay.

TOP 5 Spring Décor ACCESORIES

BY MICHAEL REESE, IBB DESIGNER

michael@ibbdesign.com | @mr.maison on Instagram

Well, spring is once again upon us. We’ve weathered a lot these past months: the holidays, the dreary winter, and oh yes - a pandemic! I find a nice “pick-me-up” is refreshing my home for spring. Holiday décor fills up space, but when it comes down, the house often feels a bit empty. A great way to make meaningful changes is by accessorizing. Consider starting with a new piece of art or even a series of art pieces. Choose art that introduces a different color than what you may

These are just a few of my favorite ways to initiate a quick and easy but effectual change to refresh your home. You can have fun with this and, if you tire of the changes, you can easily move the items to different places around your home to refresh other areas and then start all over again!

be used to. Once you do this, you can extract any color that exists in the artwork and layer it into your space to make it feel intentional. Great new additions also include a new floral. Orchids and faux flowers look more realistic than ever and are low maintenance and long lasting. Decorative pillows are another way to layer in color, texture, and pattern. They add comfort, in addition to being an important decorative element. Throws are great draped over the back or arm of the sofa or chair. There are so many now to choose

bedroom painted in Illuminating would not be very relaxing. Layering in one or two accents of yellow can add interest while still offering a restful retreat. Varying textures can give depth to your room. In this design, rich texture is brought in with the beautiful black velvet bed and the black faux fur blanket at the foot of the bed. An upholstered mirror can add pattern and texture to the room. Mirrors also open up a space while bouncing light around the room. To achieve a timeless and layered look, mix metals on your furnishings and accessories. Brass and silver design elements can be brought in with lamps, frames, furniture, and other accessories. Surround yourself with memories. Heirloom pieces and treasures from your travels help tell your story. Whether accessories, a piece of furniture, or original artwork, these personal items will bring deeper meaning to your design and give you a look you’ll be proud to come home to.

INSPIRING IDEAS

Bedroom Makeover! BY MAXINE BURT, IBB DESIGNER

If you’re looking to try a fresh new look for a bedroom in your home, these ideas can help jumpstart your design. You might consider using one of Pantone’s 2021 Colors of the Year – Illuminating or Ultimate Gray to inspire your color palette. Adding an accent of yellow can evoke a bright and cheery vibe. To keep the design comfortable and cozy, pair it with a shade of gray or black and white. A simple burst of color can be added in with pillows or an accent chair to keep it from being overwhelming. 1. Consider the function first. • Does it offer the needed privacy? The addition of a solid door(s) or a functional drape to open and close over that door offers a sound barrier and a visual buffer. • Is the lighting effective? Chandeliers and lamps with the new LED lighting can illuminate the space properly to remedy any potential eyestrain and tension. • Does the furniture function for you? Organization of your space according to your work habits makes work more effective and less stressful. An appropriate size and height of desk or work surface with a comfortable chair is essential. Be sure to consider allowing adequate storage for files and supplies for the daily tasks. 2. Aesthetics, though listed second, are really as important as function. Believe it or not, the choices you make when deciding how your home will look have a documented effect on your emotions and perceptions, thus affecting your productivity. • Color is a key element in design that can Photo By Dan Piassick emote feelings like rejuvenation, peace, tension, or anger. REFRESH YOUR DESK With most families working from home or doing virtual learning, desk space has become a necessity. An easy way to refresh your home office is with your desk accessories. A faux shagreen desk blotter or a hair-on-hide paper tray, while a minor change, can bring a level of personalization to the space. A fun pattern or pop color can make an old space feel brand new.

BRING IN SPRING When decorating for springtime, there are different ways to incorporate the feeling of the season into your home. You can incorporate more subtle elements such as adding floral, embroidered throw pillows to a space, or you can take a more literal approach with a faux orchid arrangement to reflect the blossoming nature of the spring.

FRESH TRADITIONAL

44 IBB AT HOME

We were thrilled that Phil and Cathy Blais entrusted our turn-key design services on their new home built by Custom Homes of Texas. We worked with them on every detail, from the architectural phase and finishes down to all of the furnishings, drapery, and accessories. They requested a fresh interpretation of classic traditional design that expresses a happy vibe from the moment you step foot in the door.

FOYER The foyer features a classic black and white marble design with brass inlay around the perimeter. Cathy fell in love with the bold hydrangea print fabric when we presented it, and we thought the settee was the perfect piece to use it. Cerulean blue drapery panels T with a wide trim tape and embroidered pattern showcase the soaring two-story ceiling, and shaker style paneling envelops the walls to add interest in the space. We refinished a piece they bought from us more than fifteen years ago to use as the center hall table in their new home.

GREAT ROOM The spacious great room was planned with two sitting areas. A pair of sofas, swivel chairs, and ottomans provide ample seating for their family. Another pair of swivel chairs arranged with an upholstered ottoman is an ideal spot for morning coffee or for the kids to relax while Dad and Mom are preparing dinner. Bright color in the artwork brings the room to life, and the built-in bookcases display family photos, accessories, and Cathy’s collection of Herend figurines.

GREAT ROOM 48 IBB AT HOME

Blue and white embroidered fabric frames the windows without disrupting the view to the resort-style backyard. Aqua accents in the ottomans, pillows, throws, and accessories add a punch of color to the design.

KITCHEN PREP AREA

The prep area is nestled between two Sub-Zero refrigerators that are paneled to blend in with the cabinetry. Ample counter space and a pull down faucet offer efficiency in their busy kitchen. A vibrant floral pattern was used to dress the window and usher in color.

KITCHEN A twelve-foot island anchors the kitchen, providing loads of storage and work surface for cooking and entertaining. Four brass-base counter stools were upholstered in a bleach cleanable indoor/ outdoor fabric as an optimal solution for young kiddos and guests. The vent hood was painted the same color as the island and designed with brass accents. Lantern style pendants act as jewelry in the space and provide additional lighting. Our Grace orchid arrangement provides a pop of color to the island.

IBB AT HOME 51

52 IBB AT HOME

BREAKFAST NOOK The buffet is another piece the Blais family bought from IBB years ago that we had re-painted to transition to their new home. Bold artwork livens up the space. A concrete table provides family friendly, low maintenance dining. Host chairs in a blue and green patterned fabric head the table, while acrylic ghost chairs offer easy clean-ability for young ones. A custom succulent arrangement in a brass vessel was designed as a centerpiece for the table.

IBB AT HOME 53

WORKING PANTRY We took their spacious working pantry design to the next level! For the flooring, we created a custom pattern using black and white penny round tile. Subway tile covers all of the walls as a nod to classic traditional design. Floating shelves, cabinetry, and baskets give them tons of well-organized storage for all of their pantry staples. A dishwasher, Miele coffee maker, full-sized refrigerator, and other appliances offer maximum convenience for meal prep and baking.

54 IBB AT HOME

LAUNDRY ROOM I always say laundry is way more fun when you have an amazing space to do it in! For the Blais’s laundry room, a patterned tile was selected as our jumping off point. With the room just across the hall from the working pantry, we wanted the finishes to complement each other. Crisp white cabinetry gives a fresh and airy vibe to the space. A fabric valance pulls colors from the tile onto the window, and a polished nickel finish provides a designer touch and an extra source of light.

IBB AT HOME 55

56 IBB AT HOME

DEN & BAR The den was designed to accommodate everyday TV watching as well as casual entertaining with friends and family. A custom sofa with double chaise perfectly fits the room and offers a cozy spot for everyone to sit. An ottoman on casters can easily be pushed in to create additional space to kick your feet up and relax. Exposed brick on the TV wall and walk-in bar brings texture and a pub vibe to the design. Leathered countertops and tufted counter stools add to the other masculine details of the room. LED lighting was added to the tray ceiling to highlight the floating glass shelves in the bar and are the perfect detail for the space.

IBB AT HOME 57

MUD ROOM The bright floral-patterned wallpaper sets the tone for a happy greeting as the family enters their home from the garage. Brick tile pavers were laid in a herringbone pattern for the flooring and provide another classic design element in the home. Built-ins provide tons of storage, as does the bench seating covered in indoor/outdoor fabric.

58 IBB AT HOME

POWDER BATH The patterned grasscloth wallpaper was the springboard for the room’s design. We selected a vanity sink with brass legs and a blue glass and gold-leafed framed mirror for the vanity wall. Vibrant artwork, our Noelle fuchsia orchid, and a custom area rug add color to the space.

IBB AT HOME 59

60 IBB AT HOME

STUDY

A bright navy was selected to paint all of the paneling and built-ins for the study. To keep the room from feeling dark or cavernous, we painted the inset of the coffered ceiling in a crisp white. A leather executive chair allows Phil to easily work from the built-in credenza or the writing desk. A pair of swivel chairs allows for extra seating in the room. Plaid drapery panels bring pattern into the room, and a hide rug adds texture and ties together the casual masculine aesthetic.

IBB AT HOME 61

PRIMARY BEDROOM A serene palette of blue and white was paired with rich wood tones for a comfortable and soothing feel for the bedroom. The vaulted ceiling was highlighted with dark wood beams and an acrylic and brass chandelier. A poster bed upholstered in velvet is flanked by a pair of chest of drawers with fluted details. Baroque style mirrors add a classical element above the chests. An accent of blush was brought in with the velvet bolster pillow. The sitting area was designed with velvet wing chairs, while French blue and white patterned drapery panels hang from a brass rod.

62 IBB AT HOME

IBB AT HOME 63

PRIMARY BATH The primary bath is finished with gorgeous marble with a waterjet designed patterned rug for the flooring and a paneled wall treatment on the walls. A valance recalls the same French blue patterned fabric used in the bedroom. A freestanding tub and beautiful plumbing make a stunning statement in front of the window. The vanities were painted in a soft gray to provide subtle contrast. The mirrors and sconces were accounted for in the paneling design for the walls.

64 IBB AT HOME

VANITY & CLOSET A makeup vanity was placed in close proximity to the natural light flooding the room. A blush performance velvet was used to upholster the vanity’s counter stool. The primary bathroom houses his and her closets. An acrylic and brass orb chandelier hangs over the large island in her closet. Ample storage was designed to give a designated space for Cathy’s clothing and accessories.

IBB AT HOME 65

CHARLOTTE'S ROOM Charlotte requested hot pink and bright turquoise to be part of her room’s palette. Cathy and Charlotte fell in love with the embroidered floral-patterned fabric we found which led us to use it as the room’s inspiration. Performance and indoor/outdoor fabrics were used on the window seat, bed, and ottomans. Monogrammed euro shams and a bolster out of the embroidered floral pattern were used with a white duvet to keep the bedding simple yet personal. Custom nightstands were made in a bright turquoise paint color and provide additional storage. The bubble chandelier highlights the vaulted ceiling. A brass and white lacquer dresser was used with a large round mirror and our Jaylie floral arrangement. Charlotte’s bathroom is a dream for any girl! Mermaid tile covers the vanity wall with a pink vanity and Kate Spade bow sconces. A separate vanity with a dimmable Hollywood mirror and knee space gives her a designated area to primp.

COOPER'S ROOM Classic design elements were selected to allow the design to grow well into the teen years. With blue and green being some of Cooper’s favorite colors, we had an obvious direction for his room’s color scheme. Focusing on navy as a timeless choice, we selected a plaid wallpaper to use on his bed wall. A natural wood-toned bed was chosen to give contrast to the navy plaid. Wire brushed cabinetry in a natural wood tone was used with black and white tiles for the bathroom’s design. Black subway tile with white grout was used around the lower part of the bathroom walls, and white subway tile covers the top portion. Our Slater vanity mirror was paired with black iron sconces over the vanity.

IBB AT HOME 69

GUEST SUITE A cheerful and welcoming guest suite was designed with a crisp palette of white and green. The chinoiserie wallpaper in the bathroom was used as our inspiration to pull the rest of the room and bathroom together. A pagoda style mirror flanked by sconces is a perfect complement to the wallpaper. Glass and polished nickel hardware make a beautiful statement on the vanity cabinet. A gray poster bed is upholstered in a green performance velvet. Trim tape was added to the lampshades to pull green over to the nightstands. Our Brooklyn fabric in green was used on the drapery panels.

We LOVE Pantone’s colors of the year: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. The mix of a calming natural hue with a pop of color is the whole concept behind this home’s design. We added bursts of golden yellow to light wood tones and stone-colored grays throughout the open concept. The two-toned cabinet layout adds a modern look to the sunny kitchen with lower cabinets in a warm blonde wood and uppers in pure white, while the light gray Silestone countertop adds another soft layer of dimension.

Dining Room

The dining room features floor length windows with a view of the backyard and patio and a cozy window seat. Our design first draws the eye to the strong modern straight lines of the wooden table edged in silver metal and then moves to the softer layers and textures of the drapes. We surrounded the table with creamy upholstered chairs and bright yellow pillows in the window seat. The woven shades in the window seat are another opportunity to introduce more texture and dimension in the space.

The clear wow factor in our comfy family room is the Chesterfield sofa in lush gold velvet. It is set on soft rug of creams and grays with a playful zebra pattern to let it shine as the focal point. We added just a touch more of pattern to the fireplace surround to add to the room’s personality. The surrounding natural elements and textures of the furniture and accessories help to ground and soften the room.

Primary Bedroom and Bath The Primary Bedroom was designed to evoke feelings of ease and relaxation. NEAT GOALS! BY LYNDSEY MORGAN, NEAT METHOD FRISCO

lyndsey.morgan@neatmethod.com | neatmethod.com | @neatmethod on Instagram

Do you ever find yourself putting off your "getting organized" goals because you feel like you just don’t have the time to commit to getting the job done? You are not alone – Organizing always seems like a daunting task. With our homes now also doubling as offices or schools, it is more important than ever to make those organizing resolutions a reality. Springtime is upon us which can only mean one thing...cleaning! So put on your working pants and bust out that broom. It's time for three goals to clear that clutter! Goal #1: Start Small Getting started is half the battle. When you look at an organizing project as a whole, it can seem overwhelming. If de-cluttering your kitchen is much needed, start with the pantry and tell yourself that just purging expired items is enough of an accomplishment for one day. We promise just this small step will feel so good that it will be the catalyst to the large-scale change(s) you are looking for. Before you know it, organizing your drawers, cabinets, and counters will get checked off the list!

Goal #2: Purge Before You Purchase One of the most common mistakes we see is purchasing a bunch of storage solutions before evaluating what you really need to hang on to. Take time to purge the clothes you are no longer wearing, files you no longer need, and/or medicines that are expired before you buy any containers. Also, make sure you take careful measurements before you purchase so that you don’t find yourself with organizing solutions that don’t really fit your space. Goal #3: Baskets & Bins Can ALWAYS Be Repurposed Even if you aren’t hiring a professional, organizing does require an initial investment. However, you will never regret purchasing neutral baskets and clear bins. These items will be easily transferable from one home to another and will even make getting packed up a breeze. The key is making sure they are neutral so that if they currently store your child's trucks but need to be used in the closet someday, a quick change of the label is all they need.

5. Once the dough has been refrigerated for at least 30 minutes, remove and roll out to a large circle that’s larger than the 9-inch pie pan and about 1/4-inch thick or thinner. Transfer the dough to the pie pan; then trim and flute the edges. 6. Layer the spinach, all but 1/4 cup of the crumbled bacon, tomatoes, and cheese in the crust. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the ingredients in the crust. Sprinkle with the reserved 1/4 cup crumbled bacon. Set the quiche on a rimmed baking sheet and place in the preheated oven. Bake for about 45 minutes or until quiche is set and crust is golden brown. Let set for at least 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

WHOLE WHEAT BLUEBERRY LEMON RICOTTA PANCAKES PREP TIME: 10 MIN. | COOK TIME: 20 MIN. | MAKES 14

INGREDIENTS: PANCAKES: • 1–1/2 cups whole wheat flour • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 3 large eggs • 1 cup skim milk • 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese • Zest & juice of 1 large lemon (or 2 small lemons) • 1–1/2 cups fresh blueberries SYRUP: • 1 cup fresh blueberries • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup, divided • Zest & juice of half a large lemon

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs. Whisk in the milk, ricotta, lemon zest, and lemon juice. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. 3. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in 1-1/2 cups fresh blueberries. 4. In a small skillet, add 1 cup blueberries, 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, and the zest and juice of half a lemon. Let simmer over low heat while you cook the pancakes. The blueberries will start to turn bright and rich in color, and some will pop open a bit. 5. Heat a griddle over medium-low heat. Spray with non-stick cooking spray. Using an ice cream scoop or large cookie scoop, scoop about 1/4 cup batter onto the heated skillet. Let cook until batter just starts to bubble on top. Flip pancakes and continue to cook until pancakes are set in the middle and golden on the outside, about 2-3 minutes per side. 6. Transfer cooked pancakes to a platter or pan that you can keep in a warming oven while you cook the remaining pancakes. Clean off griddle with a wet paper towel and respray with non-stick cooking spray before the next batch. Continue to cook pancakes until all of the batter has been used. 7. Stir remaining 1/4 cup maple syrup into the thickened blueberry syrup and then transfer the syrup to a serving dish. 8. Serve warm syrup over pancakes. Enjoy!
