The BodenseeErlebniskarte WINTER Now is the best time to pack your bags again! As the days are growing shorter and the first frost arrives during the night, you have the chance to discover the region around Lake Constance from an entirely new perspective. The BodenseeErlebniskarte WINTER is the smart way to explore the region: From mid-October to the end of March, it offers free admission to more than 60 attractions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. On three separate days of their choice, card holders can experience unforgettable mountain railway journeys, relax in swimming pools, discover museums and enjoy the breathtaking nature surrounding Lake Constance. What’s more, the three experience days can be spread across six months. The BodenseeErlebniskarte WINTER is particularly worthwhile if you combine several offers in a single day: spend the morning in a museum, before taking a ferry trip across the lake then and a journey on a mountain railway to enjoy stunning views over Lake Constance. The winter edition of the BodenseeErlebniskarte is available from 16th October 2017 and ends when the BodenseeErlebniskarte SUMMER comes into effect at the end of March 2018.

Ship experiences Passenger ships

From the beginning of April, the White Fleet will be sailing from Bregenz to Schaffhausen A short break on-board A light breeze that strokes your face. The unmistakable smell of the fresh Lake Constance air. A glass of wine by the ship’s rail as you look out across the great expanse of the lake: A cruise with the White Fleet means taking a time out. Or how about a refined gala dinner, dancing throughout the night, and a firework display? The fleet of the Vereinigten Schifffahrtsunternehmen für den Bodensee und Rhein (VSU) offers numerous opportunities to get away from the daily routine for a while. The VSU is a consortium of Swiss, Austrian and German shipping companies. With a total of 31 motor-powered vessels, they take their passengers to the most attractive locations on Lake Constance. Throughout the entire summer, a comprehensive program of cruises and excursions offers a range of experiences as diverse as the region itself. From any one of the major cities around Lake Constance, the region and its numerous attractions can be explored at will. Naturally, the daily cruises on Lake Constance and along the Rhine offer you the chance to get away from your daily routine on a mere whim. Highlights all year round Every season has its highlight – or several as is the case with the VSU shipping. Outstanding events are organised all year round, some of which boast a long-standing tradition. These include the international “Flottensternfahrt” which opens the season, during which boats from all the participating shipping companies come together at a specific location that changes every year. There, they form a 16 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

star – an impressive manoeuvre that you won’t get to see every day. There is also a varied entertainment programme on the boats themselves and in the harbour. The cruises to the Bregenzer Festspiele are also legendary, with the 2017 edition including performances of the opera “Carmen” by Georges Bizet. With the VUS offers, guests are taken directly to the lake stage on several dates in July and August. An on-board menu is in perfect harmony with the evening. Another crowd-puller is the Seenachtfest in Constance and Kreuzlingen with its colourful firework display. On 12 August 2017, you can once again enjoy this experience at first hand. And the very best views of the magical fireworks is from the boat. Winter season Even when it’s a little colder outside, the boat trips don’t come to a complete standstill. In the period leading up to Christmas, Advent cruises are organised with Santa even making an appearance. And for anyone wanting to give the New Year a special welcome, what could be better than a New Year’s Eve cruise.

Visiting fallow deer, storks and the monkey gang For 40 years, Salem on Lake Constance has been home to Germany’s biggest and most attractive open-air monkey enclosure. More than 200 playful Barbary macaques roam free in a 20-hectare stretch of woodland. The special park concept offers these animals, originally from the mountainous regions in Morocco and Algeria, to enjoy a life in a near-natural environment and, thanks to the very similar climate, the monkeys can stay out all year round. The Barbary macaques share the idyllic site around the pond, populated by numerous water birds and carp, with an impressive, free-flying nesting colony of white storks and a herd of graceful fallow deer. 18 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

Instead of numerous different animals in a small space, Affenberg Salem has only a few species which enjoy the best possible living conditions. Visitors can see the animals up close without being separated by fences or ditches. Extensive information is provided on numerous display boards, in the interactive monkey review, during supervised feeding (see below for times) and the film presentation. Outside the enclosure, the cosy tavern and the large adventure play area encourage visitors to stay a little longer. Trails suitable for prams and wheel-

chairs, disabled-accessible toilets and the large, free car park complete the offer. Affenberg employees feed the animals at specific times and provide visitors with a lot of interesting facts about their protégés. Castle and palace experiences Old Castle in Meersburg

Burg Meersburg GmbH Schlossplatz 10 88709 Meersburg (D) Phone +49 7532 80000 www.burg-meersburg.de

In search of the past Anyone who crosses the drawbridge and walks through the heavy entrance door to Meersburg castle finds themselves plunged into the fascinating world of bygone times. The castle looks back on more than one thousand years of European history and, according to legend and a tradition dating back to 1548, can trace its origins to the 7th century and the Merovingian Dynasty under King Dagobert I. Like growth rings, walls bear witness to the desire to build of previous owners who turned Meersburg into a fortress that was never stormed or destroyed at all. The castle is privately owned. It has been open to the public as a museum since

1878. During your visit, you will see at least 35 furnished rooms. The clearly explained tour takes you through the dirnitz, the great hall, the castle kitchen the well chamber and along the wall walk. There is also an extensive collection of weapons and knights’ armour as well as a bathhouse and bakery. The torture chamber at the bottom of Dagobert’s Tower and in the deep castle dungeon offer an insight into medieval justice. The tour also includes the rooms in which the famous German poet, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, lived when she visited Lake Constance until her death in May 1848.

The atmospheric castle café with its magnificent panoramic terrace and the romantically situated castle tavern by the Marienbrunnen fountain are ideal spots to enjoy a pleasant break.

TIP On many days, you can enjoy the view over the town of Meersburg and Lake Constance from Dagobert’s Tower. On several weekends throughout the year, the castle bustles with medieval groups. Dates can be found on the homepage.

The legacy of the Cistercians Surrounded by extensive parks and gardens stands the former Cistercians monastery and modern-day Salem palace; It came into the possession of the Margraves of Baden in 1802 and has belonged to the Baden-Württemberg State Administration of Palaces and Gardens since 2009. The origins of the complex date back to the Middle Ages when the village of Salmannsweiler was donated to the Cistercian order in 1134 for the purpose of building a monastery; It quickly became one of the most important abbeys in southern Germany. Salem enjoyed renewed prosperity during the baroque era, as can be seen in

the magnificently decorated monastery buildings which are still to this day the family residence of the Margraves of Baden. Like very few other historical sites, Salem has remained in largely authentic condition since the time of the monastery: the stunning architecture and furnishings testify to the wealth and understanding of art of the Salem monks and take visitors on a journey back through the centuries. The new monastery museum in the prelature together with the branch museum of the Badisches Landesmuseums Karlsruhe presents “Masterpieces of the Imperial Abbey”. The new Salem Fire-Brigade

Museum in the Sennhof presents a unique collection of fire-fighting equipment – including some true rarities: historic hand pumps, steam fire engines and motorised fire engines. An overview of the Salem treasures: Gothic minster with classical alabaster fittings, monastery museum, extensive palace complex with park and adventure playground, fire-brigade museum, historic wine-press, baroque stables, handicraft shops, wine and castle catering. Admission includes all the museums, exhibitions and an audio guide. Guided visits can be booked.

Campus Galli – the Carolingian Monastery Town, Meßkirch You are welcome to visit the construction site! More than 1,200 years ago, monks on Reichenau Island drew up the perfect plan for a monastery. In addition to a large church, the plan also included craftsmen’s houses, stables and gardens to ensure the monastery was self-sufficient. After centuries gathering dust in the archives of the abbey library in St.Gallen, this plan is now being put into practice. It will be several decades until all the buildings shown on the plan for the monastery are finished. In the meantime, visitors have the opportunity to watch the craftsmen at work. 48 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

Terms and conditions Dear visitors, the following translation of the terms of use for the BodenseeErlebniskarte are exclusively provided as part of our service offering and for your better understanding of these terms. Only the German version is legally binding. 1. Position of parties, contractual basis 1.1. The service providers mentioned in the brochure “Bodensee Experience Guide“ provide the cardholder with BodenseeErlebniskarte (BEK) services as described in the Bodensee Experience Guide. The service contract is made between the service provider and the cardholder in particular and through explicit agreement or use of these services. 1.2. The contractual basis for the particular provision of services by the service provider are the terms and conditions and conditions of carriage of the service provider, as far as these become effective contractual content in accordance with legal requirements. 1.3. Solely the service provider is obligated to provide respective services in accordance with the contract that results from a service claim. Internationale Bodensee Tourismus GmbH, hereinafter „IBT“, regional tourist agencies and BEK sales points are neither contractual partners in relation to services, nor contract agents. They do in particular not act as travel agent. 1.4. The right of use lies exclusively with the cardholder or entitled companions, in accordance with the service description. 2. Services 2.1. Service partners are only obligated to service provision in the framework of general conditions of their business operation, in particular in consideration of advertised performance periods, opening hours and general performance prerequisites (e.g. weather conditions). 2.2. The operation hours of some service providers do not cover the complete validity period of BEK, especially due to weather or season-related circumstances. In this respect the service scope is limited to the current, respective and customary business hours of the service provider. 2.3. Tourist agencies, system operators or third parties are not entitled to make commitments, agreements or to provide information that differ from, or are contrary to the advertised services of the service partner. 2.4. As for services that are used via the card outside of the valid service description for the card usage, also in other advertising material (host directories, brochures, catalogues, websites), the cardholder can solely claim the services according to the respective service description for the card usage. This applies in particular, if the service description for the card usage differs from other service descriptions. 3. Service providers’ rights to refuse performance 3.1. The BEK bases a service claim and the conclusion of respective individual contracts with the service providers only in the framework of legal regulations and the general availability of the services.

Mettnau Peninsula 62 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

3.2. The service providers are entitled to general legal service refusal rights. They are particularly entitled to refuse the provision of a service and the conclusion of contracts in individual cases, if objective reasons oppose to the conclusion of a contract or the performance of a service; this particularly accounts if cardholders or other accompanying persons do not comply with necessary requirements for the service provision (e.g. equipment, health conditions, check-in times). 4. Card validity 4.1. The validation period regarding the duration period in which card services can be claimed depends on the type of card chosen and on the seasonal validity after the details provided on the card (summer edition or winter edition). Relevant details for this purpose can be found in the Bodensee Experience Guide. 4.2. The card is only valid for the season it was purchased for and therefore not transferrable to the next season. 4.3. In case of non-utilisation of the card a reimbursement or diminution of the card value is ruled out, unless the non-utilisation is partly or entirely caused by a culpable violation of contractual obligations of IBT. 5. Card holder duties and liabilities 5.1. The BEK is not transferable and is only valid with a valid photo ID. It can only be used by the person mentioned on the card. 5.2. In order to claim services, the cardholder is obliged to show his/her original BEK and to present it to the service provider in electronic form or for visual inspection before the conclusion of an individual contract about a service claim. 5.3. The cardholder is obliged to present a valid photo ID upon request. If he/she is not able to do so, the service provider can refuse the conclusion of a contract about the provision of a particular service, or the provision of a service. 5.4. For age-related services and benefits for the cardholder or his/her entitled dependents, the service provider can request a corresponding proof of age. 5.5. When a BEK is stolen or lost the cardholder is obliged to report this incidence immediately at the number +49 7531 909499, whereby there is no entitlement for a free issuance of a new card. 5.6. The cardholder is liable towards IBT and the service providers for damages from a responsible or concurrently responsible, culpably abusive use of the BEK by himself or by third parties. © These terms of use are protected by copyright; RA Noll, Stuttgart, 2007-2017
