The Holiday Pass of Lake Constance WINTER Now is the best time to pack your bags again! As the days are growing shorter and the first frost arrives during the night, you have the chance to discover the region around Lake Constance from an entirely new perspective. The Holiday Pass of Lake Constance WINTER is the smart way to explore the region: From mid-October to the Beginning of April, it offers free admission to more than 60 attractions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. On three separate days of their choice, card holders can experience unforgettable mountain railway journeys, relax in swimming pools, discover museums and enjoy the breathtaking nature surrounding Lake Constance. What’s more, the three experience days can be spread across six months. The Holiday Pass of Lake Constance WINTER is particularly worthwhile if you combine several offers in a single day: spend the morning in a museum, before taking a ferry trip across the lake then and a journey on a mountain railway to enjoy stunning views over Lake Constance. The winter edition of the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance is available from 15th October 2018 and ends when the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance SUMMER comes into effect at the end of March 2019.

Ship experiences Passenger ships

Discover Lake Constance on the White Fleet A light breeze that strokes your face. The unmistakable smell of the fresh Lake Constance air. A glass of wine by the ship’s rail as you look out across the great expanse of the lake: A cruise with the White Fleet means taking a time out. Or how about a refined gala dinner, dancing throughout the night, and a firework display? The fleet of the “Vereinigten Schifffahrtsunternehmen für den Bodensee und Rhein” (VSU) offers numerous opportunities to get away from the daily routine for a while.

Culinary and Theme Ships The White Fleet ships offer many different culinary options from drinks and snacks to full gala menus. Regional and seasonal specialties sweeten any sunset cruise. Music theme cruises bring rhythm and dance on the water. Watching fireworks light up the sky is a Lake Constance tradition, like the August 11, 2018 Seenachtfest in Konstanz and Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. The ship’s deck is the best place to watch these world-class pyrotechnic shows.

The White Fleet is a consortium of Swiss, Austrian and German passenger ship companies that bring guests to beautiful locations with regularly scheduled service from Easter through late fall. The White Fleet sails directly to the front door of many attractions including Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen and SEA LIFE Constance from multiple ports-of-call. It’s easy to escape life on land—if only for a few hours with daily departures from the Upper Lake, Lower Lake, Überlinger Lake and Rhine River.

Each year, the Bregenz Music Festival in Austria hosts world-class opera on the lakefront. This year’s Carmen by Georges Bizet runs from July 18 - August 19, 2018. The White Fleet music festival cruises are legendary, bringing guests directly to the floating stage in Bregenz, and include a special opera menu.

The 3-country Panorama Tour is a great way to explore Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in a day. The Lake Constance bike route is directly linked with White Fleet ports-of-call, making the bike-and-boat combination the easiest way to get around the lake.

18 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

Winter cruising Even in winter, the White Fleet sails with a diverse program of nostalgic fun for the whole family. In the period leading up to Christmas, Advent cruises are organised and New Year’s cruises are a special way to celebrate the holiday season.

Travel information Bike transport is not included in the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance. On Mondays, bikes are free on the Obersee and the Überlinger See (except June 25 - September 3, 2018 and holidays). The car ferry connection Friedrichshafen – Romanshorn is included in the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance. Pedestrians ride free, motorists pay the lowest fare (up to 3 meters). The car ferry Constance – Meersburg, Constance – Friedrichshafen catamaran, or the Bodman – Überlingen line are not included in the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance.

Visiting fallow deer, storks and the monkey gang For more than 40 years, Salem on Lake Constance has been home to Germany’s biggest open-air monkey enclosure. More than 200 playful Barbary macaques roam free in a 20-hectar woodland. The free-range concept offers these animals – originally from mountainous regions in Morocco and Algeria – life in a natural environment, similar to their native habitat. Visitors see the animals up close without separating fences or ditches. The monkeys live outside year round and share this site with others including numerous water birds and carp, herds of fallow deer and a large colony of white storks who nest freely atop trees and barn buildings. 20 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

Learn about the monkeys from information provided on display boards, supervised feeding (see below for times) and a film presentation. Outside the enclosure, the cosy tavern and the large adventure play area encourage visitors to stay and enjoy themselves. Trails are suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. We offer disabled-accessible toilets and a large, free parking lot.

Castle and palace experiences Old Castle in Meersburg

1

Burg Meersburg GmbH Schlossplatz 10 88709 Meersburg (D) Phone +49 7532 80000 www.burg-meersburg.de

1,000 Years of History in these Walls Cross the heavy drawbridge and walk through the wooden doors to enter the Middle Ages. Allegedly Germany’s oldest and continuously (inhabited) castle, the original fortress in Meersburg traces its origins back to the 7th century Merovingian Dynasty under King Dagobert I. Perfectly preserved, this thick-walled behemoth was never stormed or destroyed by invaders. Visit 36 furnished rooms on a self-guided tour, including the knights’ hall, the great hall, castle kitchen, well-water chamber and guardsmen walkways along the castle wall. There is an extensive collection of weapons and knights’ armour, as well as the bathhouse and castle bakery. Imagine

how medieval justice was served in the torture chamber at the base of Dagobert’s Tower and deep inside the castle dungeon. The tour also includes furnished rooms where famous German poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived intermittently, drawing inspiration from the lake and castle environs. Her bust figure stands at the main gate and although unknown to most foreigners, she wrote prolifically at Meersburg Castle until her death in 1848. The castle is privately owned and the museum has been open to the public since 1878.

Take a delicious break in the Castle Café. Enjoy a glass of Meersburg wine on the terrace overlooking Lake Constance, or in the romantic Castle Tavern at the Maria Fountain.

TIP Special theme tours are free from April early November. Medieval culture comes to life in the “Animated Castle” series on weekends from April - October. Dates available on request.

Opening times March - October Mon - Sun 9 am - 6 pm November - February Mon - Sun 10 am - 6 pm Recommended time 1.5 hours Entrance Adults 12.80 Euro Free entrance with the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance for Landlubbers and Sea dogs. Salem Monastery and Palace 2

Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg Kloster und Schloss Salem Schlossverwaltung 88682 Salem (D) Phone +49 7553 9165336 www.salem.de

The legacy of the Cistercians The former Cistercian monastery and modern-day Salem Palace are surrounded by extensive parks and manicured gardens once belonging to the Margraves of Baden. Today, the Baden-Württemberg State Administration of Palaces and Gardens owns and operates the abbey complex. The abbey dates to the Middle Ages when the village of Salmannsweiler was donated to the Cistercian order in 1134 for a monastery. It became one of the most important abbeys in southern Germany, enjoying renewed prosperity in the Baroque era as you will see in the ornate monastery buildings, part of which is where the Margraves of Baden still reside. Like few other historical sites,

Salem has remained in authentic condition since its monastic beginnings. The architecture and furnishings take visitors on a journey back through the centuries, and testify to the wealth and artistic abilities of the Salem monks. The new Monastery Museum in the prelature together with the branch museum of the Badisches Landesmuseums Karlsruhe presents “Masterpieces of the Imperial Abbey.” The new Salem Fire-Brigade Museum in the Sennhof presents a unique collection of fire-fighting equipment – including true rarities like historic hand pumps, steam fire engines and motorized fire engines.

Salem treasures: Gothic minster with classical alabaster fittings, monastery museum, extensive palace complex with park and adventure playground, fire-brigade museum, historic wine-press, baroque stables, handicraft shops, wine and castle catering. Admission includes all the museums, exhibitions and an audio guide. Guided visits can be booked.

Museums and culture experiences Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen

1

Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen Seestr. 22 88045 Friedrichshafen (D) Phone +49 7541 38010 www.zeppelin-museum.de

Aviation History and the Hindenburg How did he build an airship four times larger than an Airbus, but light as air? Among many other remarkable feats in the Zeppelin Museum, you'll learn how Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin flew his first rigid airship LZ 1 over Lake Constance near Friedrichshafen in 1900. The collection's highlight is an exact scale replica of the infamous Hindenburg's passenger and panoramic cabin that caught fire in Lakehurst, New Jersey in1937. Just like passengers of yesteryear, you too can cross the gangway and step aboard the airship exactly as you would have 81 years ago. Based on historic blueprints, you can see a section of LZ

129 including the dining salon, smoking lounge and passenger cabins, as well as the memorabilia associated with life on board this ill-fated luxury airliner. Every year, up to 250,000 international visitors come to learn and feel inspired by the visionary pioneers. Interactive stations clearly explain the physics of the “lighter than air” exhibit. The continued success of the Zeppelin Group clearly demonstrates how technical innovation has evolved and how people still honour the Zeppelin legacy a century later. The Zeppelin Museum was built during the 1950s, in a Bauhaus inspired archi-

tectural style. Within this former harbour railway station, you can explore a significant collection of artwork, ranging from southern German masters from the Middle Ages to internationally renowned contemporary artists. There is a focus on artists who retreated to Lake Constance during the 3rd Reich, in a movement known as “Inner Emigration” including Otto Dix, Max Ackermann and Willi Baumeister. The museum's collection hosts over 400 works by Dix and the most extensive collection of Ackermann works in public ownership.

Sunken Stone Age Village Revealed Travel back in time a few thousand years to the Stone and Bronze Ages at Germany’s largest archaeological open air museum! Ancient farmers and fishermen on Lake Constance thrived along this lakeshore 5,000 years ago. You will see how alpine cultures lived in small communities like this one. Surely they could start fires with flint, but these ingenious people also felled trees, drilled them into the lake bed, traded colourful beads, crafted tools and mysterious artwork. You will dive into Lake Constance (virtually) and take underwater tour with the “ARCHAEORAMA” multimedia show. Afterwards, a professional guide shares 22 | Bodensee Experience Guide SUMMER

this fascinating history on a 35-minute walking tour across the “floating” walkways to a cluster of reconstructed thatch-roofed dwellings, complete with household implements along with a few unanswered mysteries. In the oxygen-deprived layers under Lake Constance, archaeologists found preserved wall paintings, textiles and even bread! Due to these unique preservation conditions, UNESCO declared “Stilt Houses around the Alps” an important cultural legacy for future generations. After the guided tour, there’s more to discover on your own in the Stone Age Course. Test your skills by trying out ancient

building techniques and seeing the archaeological experiments. Don’t miss the special indoor exhibit “Legacy of the Pile Builders” with its 1,000 original artefacts. The museum is suitable for all ages, handicap-accessible, family friendly and easily navigable with baby strollers. TIP There are informative, fun events hosted during summer holidays in the Stone Age Course. Our “ARCHAE-X” Days feature special group performances in historic costume that entertain and take visitors into a lost, submerged world.

Campus Galli – the Carolingian Monastery Town, Meßkirch Visit the construction site! More than 1,200 years ago, monks on Reichenau Island drew up the perfect plan for a monastery. In addition to a large church, the plan also included craftsmen’s houses, stables and gardens to ensure the monastery was self-sufficient. After centuries gathering dust in the archives of the abbey library in St.Gallen, this plan is now being put into practice. It will be several decades until all the buildings shown on the plan for the monastery are finished. In the meantime, visitors have the opportunity to watch the craftsmen at work.

Terms and conditions Dear visitors, the following translation of the terms of use for the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance are exclusively provided as part of our service offering and for your better understanding of these terms. Only the German version is legally binding. 1. Position of parties, contractual basis 1.1. The service providers mentioned in the brochure “Bodensee Experience Guide“ provide the cardholder with BodenseeErlebniskarte (BEK) services as described in the Bodensee Experience Guide. The service contract is made between the service provider and the cardholder in particular and through explicit agreement or use of these services. 1.2. The contractual basis for the particular provision of services by the service provider are the terms and conditions and conditions of carriage of the service provider, as far as these become effective contractual content in accordance with legal requirements. 1.3. Solely the service provider is obligated to provide respective services in accordance with the contract that results from a service claim. Internationale Bodensee Tourismus GmbH, hereinafter „IBT“, regional tourist agencies and BEK sales points are neither contractual partners in relation to services, nor contract agents. They do in particular not act as travel agent. 1.4. The right of use lies exclusively with the cardholder or entitled companions, in accordance with the service description. 2. Services 2.1. Service partners are only obligated to service provision in the framework of general conditions of their business operation, in particular in consideration of advertised performance periods, opening hours and general performance prerequisites (e.g. weather conditions). 2.2. The operation hours of some service providers do not cover the complete validity period of BEK, especially due to weather or season-related circumstances. In this respect the service scope is limited to the current, respective and customary business hours of the service provider. 2.3. Tourist agencies, system operators or third parties are not entitled to make commitments, agreements or to provide information that differ from, or are contrary to the advertised services of the service partner. 2.4. As for services that are used via the card outside of the valid service description for the card usage, also in other advertising material (host directories, brochures, catalogues, websites), the cardholder can solely claim the services according to the respective service description for the card usage. This applies in particular, if the service description for the card usage differs from other service descriptions.

Eplaner 2018.indd 5

3. Service providers’ rights to refuse performance 3.1. The BEK bases a service claim and the conclusion of respective individual contracts with the service providers only in the framework of legal regulations and the general availability of the services.

3.2. The service providers are entitled to general legal service refusal rights. They are particularly entitled to refuse the provision of a service and the conclusion of contracts in individual cases, if objective reasons oppose to the conclusion of a contract or the performance of a service; this particularly accounts if cardholders or other accompanying persons do not comply with necessary requirements for the service provision (e.g. equipment, health conditions, check-in times). 4. Card validity 4.1. The validation period regarding the duration period in which card services can be claimed depends on the type of card chosen and on the seasonal validity after the details provided on the card (summer edition or winter edition). Relevant details for this purpose can be found in the Bodensee Experience Guide. 4.2. The card is only valid for the season it was purchased for and therefore not transferrable to the next season. 4.3. In case of non-utilisation of the card a reimbursement or diminution of the card value is ruled out, unless the non-utilisation is partly or entirely caused by a culpable violation of contractual obligations of IBT. 5. Card holder duties and liabilities 5.1. The BEK is not transferable and is only valid with a valid photo ID. It can only be used by the person mentioned on the card. 5.2. In order to claim services, the cardholder is obliged to show his/her original BEK and to present it to the service provider in electronic form or for visual inspection before the conclusion of an individual contract about a service claim. 5.3. The cardholder is obliged to present a valid photo ID upon request. If he/she is not able to do so, the service provider can refuse the conclusion of a contract about the provision of a particular service, or the provision of a service. 5.4. For age-related services and benefits for the cardholder or his/her entitled dependents, the service provider can request a corresponding proof of age. 5.5. When a BEK is stolen or lost the cardholder is obliged to report this incidence immediately at the number +49 7531 909499, whereby there is no entitlement for a free issuance of a new card. 5.6. The cardholder is liable towards IBT and the service providers for damages from a responsible or concurrently responsible, culpably abusive use of the BEK by himself or by third parties. © These terms of use are protected by copyright; RA Noll, Stuttgart, 2007-2017 New rules apply for the purchase of the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance (BodenseeErlebniskarte) as of July 1, 2018. Information at bodensee.eu and every outlet that sells the Holiday Pass of Lake Constance.
