Loro Parque

Starmus competition

Another triumph for the Kiessling family and their hardworking teams as just weeks after Siam Park was declared the best water park in the world, Loro Parque has been awarded with the top European prize. The awards are Traveller’s Choice awards by the social network Tripadvisor

Living in the Canaries with our privileged clear night skies, there are few of us who haven’t at some stage in our lives looked up and formulated a question as to the whys and wherefores of the Universe: Well now you have the chance to put that question to one of the world’s leading lights of contemporary science – Stephen Hawking. The organisers of the Starmus festival, at which Hawking is to be the keynote speaker, have launched the Ask Stephen Hawking competition to give the non-expert public the opportunity to question someone who is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein.

Ask Stephen Hawking!

The Starmus festival, between September 22 and 27, is the most ambitious all-star festival in science where music and the stars come together with the Canary Islands as a unique meeting point for astronomy,

astrophysics and space exploration. You have until August 29 to send in your question, either through your accreditation at the festival, email or through the Starmus Facebook page. The winners of the competition (three festival attendees and one non-attending member of the public) will be announced on September 1. The four winners will have the chance to put their question individually to Stephen Hawking at the festival and will have the opportunity to go on stage and experience a unique personal moment with the renowned scientist. To enter, send your question to the organisers by email at hawking@starmus.com,

Facebook at http://on.fb. me/1rAx2D3, or when registering for your tickets. This second edition of Starmus, titled Beginnings. The Making Of The Modern Cosmos, in addition to Stephen Hawking boasts a stellar panel of speakers such as the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and the Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May and includes a wide range of events to keep everyone interested and entertained: talks, conferences, dinners, meet and greets, visits and a concert with special guest star Rick Wakeman with Brian May (see separate article on page 27). Fewer staff – no services The ‘opening’ of the new North Tenerife A&E Department has underlined recent claims of the down spiral of staff numbers and the lack of real commitment to the facility. For many years now, health union representatives’ claims that staffing levels have fallen considerably in the Canaries have been denied by the authorities. However, the Spanish Ministry of Finance own statistics show that the number of

people employed in the Health Service here has fallen by 775 since 2010. According to the statistics, the islands have one of the poorest ratios of doctors and nurses and lowest number of hospital beds. Into the mix comes the surprise opening of the A&E Department, surprise because after so many promises over so many years, no one really expected it. However the event has already sparked a blazing

political row. The opposition is accusing Canarian president Paulino Rivero of, “seeking a photo opportunity” rather than ensuring proper A&E services. Antonio Alarcón, the Popular Party’s health spokesman and himself a reputed surgeon, said the opening had been rushed to meet the government’s political agenda. “It does not have the equipment it needs such as scanners, X-ray machines or laboratories for tests, so it

cannot do its job properly” said Alarcón, adding that the Icod A&E unit is supposed to alleviate the congestion at the main University Hospital but could end up seeing even more patient time wasted if they are referred anyway. It seems that he is unaware that currently the locals are taken first to a private facility in Puerto and only if they are unable to deal with the emergency are they referred on to the HUC.

‘Tis the season Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy all the unusual traditions which make the islands so special and make them stand out from the rest of the tourist destinations: Whether you are here on holiday or a resident don’t miss some of these outstanding events. On August 16, one of the most well known of Tenerife’s romerías takes place in Garachico. The San Roque romería is officially recognised as being of tourist interest and is a very colourful event indeed with its procession of colourful costumes, ox-drawn decorated carts, dancing, singing, farm animals and bamboo ‘wands’ with multi-coloured ribbons. It starts at 10am in Garachico old town and takes several hours to pass by – take some water, comfortable shoes and sun cream! You’ll be offered drinks, hot potatoes, chunks of marinated pork and made to feel very welcome as part of a popular romería in a historic old town. The following day, August 17, at 11am in the Finca las Cuchillas, Icod el Alto in the borough of Los Realejos there’s a demonstration of how cereals were harvested by hand, exactly as it was done not so very long ago. The reenactment is carried out in an area which is considered an agricultural paradise for the quality of the soil and the products which are planted there. It’s a plateau above the protected area of the Acantilados de Tigaiga y Ruíz with splendid panoramic views over the Atlantic and up to Teide. Don’t miss it! Coming soon, the Tejina hearts fiesta: Watch this space!

It’s a great place to shop – and to work!

The Friends of South Tenerife Forum (FAST) have donated €15,000 to the Spanish Associacion Against Cancer (AECC) from the golf tournament at Golf del Sur in late May. According to FAST together with €14,500 donated last year for the purpose from the same organisation and other donations, the Cancer association will finally be able to buy the 18-seater bus needed to take people from the south to the hospital for their treatment.

Humboldt viewpoint fears

Musical August Southern Gran Canaria is enjoying a very hot August in terms of music. Friday nights at the big Auditorium in Meloneras are taken up throughout the month with interesting gigs, beginning with last week’s opening tribute to legendary band AC/DC. The tribute, by TNT Rocks, included some of the group’s most famous numbers, including Stiff Upper Lip, Back In Black, Hells Bells, Shoot To Thrill, It’s a Long Way, TNT and Let There Be Rock. It is followed on August 8 by a

look back at 50 years of rock and roll, which sees covers of a host of history-making songs made famous by icons such as Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Queen, The Police, U2 and Oasis. The focus narrows to Spain the following week (August 15) with an on-stage tribute to Spanish pop music, before the short season closes with a female touch in the form of a night dedicated to top divas, including Mariah Carey, Celine Dion

Puerto de la Cruz

Finally on tap The dirty tap water problems that have plagued several parts of Puerto de la Cruz should now be over, following the installation of costly new filters in one of the local treatment plants. Thousands of Puerto households have been forced to

use bottled water or water from a tanker lorry for nearly five months due to the inasalubrious state of the local supply, which forced the public health authorities to intervene to ban the use of tap water for drinking. Puerto council and the

island’s top water official formally unveiled the new filters at the water company’s treatment facility and showed their confidence in the new system, which will supply up to 8,000 cubic metres daily, by drinking tap water for the cameras.

What was supposed to be the biggest best viewing spot in the north of the island is fast turning into one of the costliest mistakes ever made, not to mention a potential eyesore for the area. The Humboldt ‘mirador’, named after the famous German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt who spent considerable time conducting scientific research in Tenerife at the turn of the 19th century, is in danger of falling into total neglect just a few years after it was formally inaugurated as a major tourism asset for the La Orotava Valley. Legal problems with the concession contract awarded to a firm to operate the expensive facility, which also has a restaurant with a view to die for, have seen a court-appointed administrator brought in following its closure. According to local reports, the

firm awarded the concession has not paid a single euro in rent and its right to run the mirador has apparently been withdrawn after it emerged that it breached the conditions of

the contract by sub-letting the building. There are now genuine fears that the building will fall victim to vandals if its fate is not decided soon.

Pérez gets executive seat under new PSOE leader The leadership change in Spain’s opposition party, the PSOE, brings a new responsibility for Canarian Education Minister José Miguel Pérez. In a surprise move, Pérez has been chosen by the new PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez as his education spokesman, which will require the Canarian politician’s presence in Madrid on a regular basis. However, contrary to initial reports, he will not be leaving his role in the islands to take his seat on the

PSOE executive. If Pérez is certainly on the up, one leading figure who looks to be on the wane is Juan Fernando López Aguilar (once tipped as a future party leader), who was left out of the new executive and will have nowhere near the influence he had under previous leader Alfredo Rubalcaba.

Traffic delays

La Gomera

“Urgent” Dairy produce motorway lane seized Despite being classed years ago as an urgent need, the third lane for the motorway between San Isidro and Playa de Las Américas is no nearer becoming a reality and the business community in the south has once again taken the government to task over the continued delay. First tabled back in 2005 as a priority to reduce the growing congestion on the busy stretch, which carries tens of thousands of vehicles every day and is often gridlocked when an accident occurs, the third lane

has been formally approved but nothing has been done to begin the construction work. “The Government is using the economic crisis as an excuse for everything it has not fulfilled by way of promises on this and other key transport issues,” said a spokesperson for a prominent local business association, which has again challenged the Department of Transport to give a date for the commencement of the motorway widening project.

The crackdown by the Canarian authorities on breaches of food safety regulations has extended to La Gomera, where a large consignment of dairy products has been seized by the Civil Guard. Eagle-eyed officers intervened after spotting that yoghurts and other dairy products for distribution to shops and restaurants on the island were not being kept in proper conditions on a lorry in the capital San Sebastián. The lorry was being used not just to transport the products but also as a makeshift storage

The Council want to share the airport business around

Efforts by the Gran Canaria authorities to modify taxi arrangements at the island’s airport have again been met with fierce opposition from the towns that currently have exclusive rights to pick up passengers. The Cabildo’s Transport Department has been fighting a losing battle to open up the lucrative business to drivers from outside Telde and Ingenio, the two towns with a monopoly on the service. In the latest bid to break the deadlock, the Cabildo proposed that the pair retain 80 per cent of the overall pie, with 20 per cent being allocated to taxis from Las Palmas. However, the idea was immediately rejected, with the mayor of Ingenio particularly vociferous in his attack on those behind the initiative to declare the airport a, “Sensitive” location and therefore not subject to the usual pick-up rules. “They have got it totally wrong with this idea and are now trying to salvage whatever they can. It will not happen,” said Juan José Gil. The taxi wrangle has been raging for some time and was triggered largely by the Cabildo’s desire for more parts of Gran Canaria to benefit from the business generated by the airport.

facility. However, the officers noted that it was not connected to an electrical supply to guarantee refrigeration and they intervened to check the load. A total of 1,300 kilos of yoghurts, cream and prepacked desserts which were being stored at non-cool temperatures were confiscated and disposed of. The owner of the lorry faces prosecution for public health offences. The find came a fortnight after 200 kilos of meat and 350 kilos of vegetables in poor condition were seized by the same Civil Guard unit on the island.

Plans for a light railway between Santa Cruz and the resorts in the south are still proceeding even though the island authorities admit they will be a very long time in materialising. The pet project of the Tenerife Cabildo, which views a fast train - 80 km distance in less than 40 minutes - as the solution to many of the current traffic problems on the TF1 motorway and a vital way of boosting worker mobility, the rail link is considered by many to be unrealistic and certainly not a priority for the Spanish Government, which has been asked to fund the bulk of the expensive infrastructure. Spanish premier Mariano Rajoy’s arrival in office in November 2011 and immediate enforcement of cost-cutting measures throughout the country led the plans to be shelved for the time being, although the Cabildo is still working on the blueprint, “To be ready once the restrictions ease”. Madrid has signed an agreement to provide €1.6 million for studies required for the project between now and the end of the year.

According to its organisers, the Mrs Universe competition was created in 2007, “To celebrate, honour, and uplift the image of today’s women of the universe who are responsible for the home and family and who play important roles not only in the family (as wives or mothers) but also in the society and global community (as career women in different fields)”.

La Palma

Missing man found Missing persons hunts rarely produce happy endings but a La Palma man who disappeared for four days has turned up safe and sound. Pedro Rodríguez, 38, from Barlovento was reported missing by his family and his disappearance sparked an island-wide search, which saw posters put up across La Palma and calls for information on his whereabouts

issued via the media. Search teams backed by a helicopter and dogs and supported by volunteers combed the area where he was last seen but initially to no avail. He was eventually located in the mountains outside El Paso, apparently none the worse for his ordeal although he was taken to hospital as a precaution. The happy ending bucked the trend of unre-

solved disappearances in the Islands in recent times. As reported here, an astrophysics student has still not been found after disappearing over a year ago when he left his La Laguna flat without his mobile phone, wallet or any ID. In Gran Canaria, an elderly couple vanished without trace on their way to a medical appointment in March 2012.

Children chain protest Issues of ‘international’ families were once again in the news here following the headline-making protest by an Italian man who says his children were taken from Tenerife by their Austrian mother without his knowledge. Restaurateur Michele Sari, 45, staged his protest at the door of the courthouse in Arona to pressure the authorities into taking action to help him reclaim his son and daughter, aged 11 and 15, who left the island in late June with his ex-wife. Sari has lived here for five years in La Caleta, Adeje since arriving with his family from New Zealand. Accompanied by his elderly parents, he chained himself to fittings in the courthouse for the day to draw attention to his battle to have his children returned. According to the distraught father, his wife has, “a history of mental problems,”

La Gomera

Better late than never? By Barbara Belt It you investigate flying to La Gomera from abroad, you’re likely to suffer frustration and a sense of wasting time. Half an hour of your precious time will be spent fruitlessly scrolling the online search machines, where all the usual contenders for your money will offer you flights to “San Sebastián, La Gomera”. They don’t exist, which is just as well as there is no airport at capital San Sebastían. There is a port, where a small plane could probably land if it had to, which would certainly add drama and liven up the whole sedate ferry scene. There is, however, a delightful island airport nearby at Alajeró, just above Playa Santiago. Designed and built back when European coffers overflowed, our airport is the sort of jewel you might find gracing an oilrich Arab state. This island has natural beauty, but few architectural wonders, so the airport has a role. With its innovative blend of local tosca, smoked glass, marble floors, fountains, indoor garden, traditional woodwork and a main entrance door replicating the entrance to the historic Asunción church in San Sebastián, this is an airport well worth visiting. Once there, the visitor can enjoy a snack and drink in the bar there, manned, (womaned?), by the charming Amparo, fount of all knowledge. The whole place is incredibly peaceful and is unmolested by bothersome planes. There is a flurry of activity for the morning flight to Tenerife North, with plenty of time to recover before the next burst of activity for the afternoon flight. It doesn’t make any money, so on July 29, 2010, we made history as the first Spanish airport to dispense with air traffic controllers (who needs ‘em?) in favour of the Airborne Flight InformaCompany Details:

tion Service. AFIS leaves the land-or-not decision to pilots, having provided them with full weather and air traffic information. To date, pilots have made correct decisions, which is a comfort in these recent days of planes dropping like flies. Our airport is thus something of an expensive white elephant, albeit a very lovely one and the reasons for this are fairly obvious. Flights bringing tourists from northern Europe to Tenerife generally arrive at TF South, Reina Sofía airport. It would take doggedly deter-

mined air travellers precision planning, an hour’s drive in the wrong direction and another €70 to finish the journey to La Gomera by air via Los Rodeos, TF North. The result is that few visitors fly to La Gomera. Most come by ferry. According to Spanish airport authority AENA, “The airport of La Gomera, located in Alajeró, 34 kilometres from capital San Sebastián, is the most modern airport in the Canary Islands. Inaugurated in 1999, it has established itself as a vital component of exterior

communication for the island’s inhabitants and tourist development in the island”. Well, this is a laudably positive view, in view of the figures below, which only reflect a small percentage of all visitors to the island. In 2007/8, there were more planes and, obviously, more passengers. When funding dried up, flights were reduced, then stopped altogether. Air passengers need planes. The airport closed for a while although, fortunately, Amparo’s bar stayed open and then in 2012 Canary Fly announced it would begin operating there and intended to increase the number of destinations. There was excitement, but its tenure was short lived,

La Gomera was the last Canary Island to have an airport and before construction started in the mid-nineties, much discussion took place about where to site it. The current Fred Olsen, now 85 years old, whose family business has had interests on the island for nearly a century, had suggested a different site. I interviewed him in 1990, no mean feat given his Norwegian Howard Hughes (great wealth, publicity shy) press handle. He was charming, but fed up. “The site the authorities want to use is ridiculous. It’s on the coast. Noise will disrupt the tourism we’re trying to attract to Playa Santiago”. The Olsen company built the four star Hotel Jardín Tecina Contributors: Katy Kennedy /Manuel De La Flor George Reed /Chris Todd Head Office Tenerife: C. there, followed by a golf course and the recent Pueblo Don Tomás residential area. “The airport should be away from the coast, with easier communications to the rest of the island. I’ve offered land higher up, where a runway adequate for direct international flights could be built. If they build it down there, it’ll be of limited use. Only small planes will use it. La Gomera doesn’t need mass tourism, but it does need a useful airport for islanders and tourists”. Clever chaps, these Norwegians. Twenty-four years later, it’s been officially decreed that the one and a half km runway is indeed too short. “It is impossible to receive charter flights”, reveals Cabildo chief Curbelo, who took part in the original decision-making process, having been on the scene for decades but still at the helm despite his much-publicised adventures in a Madrid ‘sauna’ and various shelved court cases. “An application has been made to modify planning regulations so that the runway can be enlarged, then the island will be able to receive bigger, direct international flights. Discussions are currently taking place with Regional Government about direct flights from London this winter season”. The present runway stretches along a cliff top between two deep barrancos, providing pilots with clear incentives to take off promptly and climb fast on leaving the island. You land hoping details like brake fluid have been attended to, always supposing planes have brake fluid. The feat of civil engineering necessary to extend the runway will be a Great Project indeed and dare I say, will undoubtedly provide ample scope for the back-handers and nest-feathering so vital for the forward progress of island affairs.

ENERGY FEATURE

08/08/2014 - 21/08/2014

Solar power

Are the Canary Islands 40 years behind the times? In 1977 I went on a seven day tour of Israel. The thing that sticks in my mind is that the country was inundated with solar panel water heaters. When I bought a villa in Turkey, it had a solar panel fastened to one side of the peaked roof, with water pipes going through the roof into the loft area to the heat exchanger and hot water tank - a very neat and reliable installation. Given two hours of sun a day, there is sufficient hot water to service the villa and you can expect to recover the cost of the heater in about a year. The price of photovoltaic panels, which generate 220 volt electricity, has dropped precipitously in recent years and usage of these is sky- rocketing worldwide - except in Spain! Bloomberg reports that residential deployment of solar panels in the USA has increased 38

per cent this year to date and 79 per cent year on year. Given Spain’s sunny climate, a single photovoltaic panel would produce much more electricity than the average house would use and the surplus could be transferred to the national grid. The income generated would pay for the installation and help to reduce the pollution generated by the ther-

mal power stations. However, Barclays has recently downgraded all energy company bonds because, “Solar panels may prove highly disruptive to the energy sector,” and that “Photovoltaic + residential scale power storage is liable to disrupt the status quo”. In Spain wind power provides 20 per cent of energy supplies, nuclear 20 per cent and

solar only three per cent. The remainder is generated from pollution-creating oil and coal fired power stations. Spain depends on imports for 99 per cent of its oil and gas needs. One would expect the authorities to welcome solar panels and do everything possible to encourage their use. However, the Spanish Government have introduced a

tax on solar panels which has extended the time it takes for the installation to pay for itself from eight to 25 years. People with solar panels can no longer sell their surplus electricity back to the grid and, if a panel owner fails to declare the use of his panel, huge fines are in prospect! Spain has the highest renewable energy potential in the EU and is the only country in the world charging for the use of the sun! These are clearly measures to protect the energy industry. The Tenerife council disagrees strongly with this tax and its President Carlos Alonso is pressurising the Spanish authorities to treat the Canary Islands as a special case.

Don’t do as we do, do as we say! Although the Government tax

and fine individuals for the use of solar panels or non-declaration of their use, energy companies are exploiting the cheap, pollution- free 220 volt electricity produced by these photovoltaic solar panels. Tenerife has many thousands of these panels covering many tens of acres hidden in the hills. The Canarian Government is also adamantly opposed to this tax and is fighting the Spanish Government on our behalf. So, whilst it’s OK for the energy conglomerates to harness the sun’s rays to produce electricity to be sold at very high prices to the masses, we are discouraged from harnessing the sun’s rays which fall on our own property and thereby saving ourselves money and at the same time reducing the pollution which is slowly destroying our planet! Maybe the next tax will be on the air we breathe?

Zerolo and his senior deputy, Guillermo Nuñez, were convicted by the Supreme Court of flouting the rules in awarding a costly contract for a major building refurbishment to a ‘friendly’ company, against the advice of council officials and knowing that building renovations were not the firm’s line of business. The case dates back to 2003 when the mayor ignored the advice and went ahead with the contract rather than go through the proper procedures for such tenders. When he completed his term as mayor, he persuaded his Canarian Coalition party to designate him as a member of the Spanish Senate in order to escape, or at least

delay as much as possible, his prosecution by the country’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor. According to media reports, the total bill for the refurbishment of the council building ended up being 17 times more than initially

stated and many duplicate bills for the same work were approved and paid. Three years ago Zerolo was in the news after he claimed that his vastly increased wealth was due to a succession of lottery wins.

Unsuccessful applicants for jobs as cleaners at Tegueste town hall in north Tenerife are trying to have their selection procedure voided because the exam had nothing to do with their role as cleaners. According to Tenerife daily El Día, a total of eight women have hired a lawyer to have the written test scrapped because they were asked questions about the Spanish constitution, the parliamentary system, the administrative make-up of the council and even the addresses of council offices. “Of the 50 questions in the theory test, only a small number had anything to do with hygiene and cleaning standards. It was designed more with clerical

workers in mind, not cleaning ladies,” said one of the furious women. News of the bizarre recruitment process has prompted comments in

the media that the jobs had already been given out unofficially and the council needed a way to justify not selecting any of the applicants.

Eviction nightmare An elderly couple from Tacoronte looks as if they will, after all, have to leave their home despite obtaining a stay of the enforcement of an eviction order more than a year ago. Antonio Méndez, aged 78, and his wife Berta, 73, have been involved in a bizarre legal wrangle lasting nearly a decade which now looks certain to see them lose their house. The curious battle began when their next door neighbour took them to court for having part of their property on his land. A succession of rulings against the couple and, according to friends

and neighbours, very poor legal advice from their lawyer have seen them obliged to give up their home and only the mass mobilisation by anti-eviction organisations on two previous occasions when the bailiffs were sent in prevented them

from being forced out. Now, however, a judge has set September 19 as the definitive date for the eviction. Friends and supporters are already organising meetings to plan the next campaign to save the couple.

Hi everyone, katykennedy@telefonica.net Tf: 616 110 930

What a strange few months of uncertain weather we are experiencing here in the Canary Islands. Yet it seems that almost everywhere on our planet strange weather is the norm. A study by researchers at NASA and the University of California, Irvine, finds a rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of decline. The study incorporates 40 years of observations that indicate the glaciers in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica, “Have passed the point of no return,” according to glaciologist and lead author Eric Rignot, of UC Irvine and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. These glaciers already contribute significantly to sea level rise, releasing almost as much ice into the ocean annually as the entire Greenland Ice Sheet. They contain enough ice to raise the global sea level by four feet (1.2 metres) and are melting

faster than most scientists had expected. “A conservative estimate is it could take several centuries for all of the ice to flow into the sea,” Said Rignot. However,

if the global weather continues its upward trend of heating the oceans, that estimate could be seriously reduced, with enormous effect upon many low lying countries.

08/08/2014 - 21/08/2014

The experts charted the changes in the glaciers’ flow speeds, how much of each glacier floats on seawater, and the slope of the terrain they are flowing over and its depth below sea level.

The glaciers flow out from land to the ocean, with their leading edges afloat on the seawater. The point on a glacier where it first loses contact with land is called the grounding line. Nearly all glacier melt occurs on the underside of the glacier beyond the grounding line, on the section floating on seawater. A glacier floats over an area where it used to be grounded if it becomes lighter. The glaciers studied by Rignot’s group are now floating above places where they used to sit solidly on land, which means their grounding lines are retreating inland. The team used radar observations captured between 1992 and 2011 by the European Earth Remote Sensing (ERS1 and -2) satellites to map the grounding lines’ retreat. As glaciers flow faster, they stretch out and thin, which reduces their weight and lifts them farther off the bedrock. As the grounding line retreats and more of the glacier becomes waterborne, there’s less resist-

ance underneath, so the flow accelerates. As the glaciers retreat, they cannot escape the reach of the ocean, and warm water melts them even more rapidly. The accelerating flow rates, lack of pinning points and sloping bedrock all point to one conclusion, Rignot said. “The fact that the retreat is happening simultaneously over a large sector suggests it was triggered by a common cause, such as an increase in the amount of ocean heat beneath the floating sections of the glaciers.” Because of the importance of this part of West Antarctica, NASA’s Operation IceBridge will continue to monitor its evolution closely during this year’s Antarctica deployment, which begins in October. Let’s hope we can, as the supposedly leading species on this planet, look after the environment as lovingly as we look after our families. Until next time, take care of yourselves.

Casa Lercaro

The Casa Lercaro shows Tenerife’s history in-depth

Casa Lercaro in Calle San Agustín, La Laguna, was built at the end of the 16th century by a family of merchants from Genoa. Within its walls you will find a fascinating collection concentrating on Tenerife’s economic and social history over the last few centuries, covering issues such as the conquest, religion’s effect on society, trade and professions, and the changes that a growing population brought about even hundreds of years ago. Opening times for the three museums listed so far are Tuesday to Saturday, 9am – 8pm; Sunday, Monday and bank holidays, 10am to 5pm. Children under eight always have free entry and everyone else can get in free on Fridays and Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm, except holiday periods when it’s between 1pm and 5pm. Outside of these times a general adult tickets costs €5; residents €3. Resident students, the retired, those over 65, and groups of more than eight can get in for €2 each, or €3.50

You can also see the famous ‘Tigre’ cannon which was one of the decisive weapons which won the battle against Horacio Nelson when the English attempted to invade Tenerife

There are always plenty of art exhibitions on which also have free entry and many of them are far from the traditional children’s image of stuffy paintings lining the walls in a boring fashion, so why not see if your youngsters fancy a trip to a gallery. each town’s cultural centre is a good place to start: they will often have leaflets advertising events that haven’t yet made it onto their websites.

Deal a good hand Many restaurants and attractions offer special deals over the summer months which include free meals or free entry for children, when accompanied by an adult of course! One such place is Restaurante

Ekade in La Laguna. Every Saturday until September 27 they will give the little ones soup followed by chips and croquettes – all you have to do is buy their drinks. There is also a games zone where they can amuse themselves. Call: 922 631 101.

BUSINESS NEWS

ISLAND CONNECTIONS | EDITION 727

What will you do with your pension pot? Will you buy a Lamborghini car with your pension money… as the Pensions Minister was quoted as saying? Or, will you invest in property? Or, will you seek good clear financial advice as to what is best for you to do with your pension pot?

The detail isn’t set in stone, but this signals a clear Government desire to give savers more control, and responsibility. It could represent pension utopia.

Radical changes proposed in this year’s Budget could herald the biggest shake-up to UK pensions ever and it could happen as soon as April 2015. These proposals would give pension savers more freedom, choice and flexibility than ever before over how they access their pension savings.

For some people however, immediate benefits include • Capped income drawdown - limit up 25 per cent: The maximum yearly income allowed will increase by 25 per cent, from 120 per cent to 150 per cent of the GAD basis amount, for income years starting after 26 March 2014. • Flexible income drawdown – Minimum income requirement cut from £20K to £12k.

Changes to income drawdown rules from 27 March, 2014

What will you do with your pension pot?

• If the changes go ahead, anyone of pension age would be

able to draw as much (or as little) from their pension

pot as they choose at any time. • 25 per cent would still be tax free. The balance would be taxed as income in the year it’s taken.

Welcome changes to the pension triviality rules from 27 March, 2014 • Triviality limit up to £30k: Individuals over age 60, with total pension savings of £30,000 or less can take it all as a trivial commutation lump sum - the current limit is just £18,000. • Stranded pot rules relaxed: These headlines are just some of the messages from the 2014 UK budget – don’t forget the 2013 changes – Statutory Lifetime allowance and Annual Allowance both being reduced! Sebastian & St James International Financial Advisors: Advice based on integrity, trust and experience.

Madrid intervenes

Town halls to pay bills sooner The Spanish government is to intervene directly to pay bills owed by regional and local authorities who fail to meet the stipulated payment deadlines imposed by Madrid as part of its drive to make life easier for contractors and traders working with town halls and similar bodies. In one of its last pieces of business before the summer break,

the Ministry of Finance granted itself powers to step in directly and pay overdue bills and then deduct the money from local government funding payable to the corporation concerned. Although average payment periods have been cut considerably since legislation passed in 2012 to speed up the process in the notoriously slow corporations, some continue to drag

their feet. Back in 2012, town halls were ordered to provide Madrid with full details of all outstanding bills from their suppliers in order to receive money from a new fund set up to help clear the backlog. The Ministry is to force all local governments to publish their average payment times and will intervene directly in the case of unjustified delays.

Russian holidays In 2013 Russia registered a huge increase in trips to foreign destinations and became Europe’s third biggest foreign travel market, reporting around 32 million trips abroad and even overtaking France. These are the latest findings of the World Travel Monitor, a survey carried out by IPK International. Since the start of the millennium Russia has become

one of the few boom markets in international tourism. After 2000 Russia reported continuous double-digit growth, only marginally trailing other boom countries such as China. From 2010 to 2013 Russia accounted for around one-third of the growth in foreign trips by Europeans. Most of these were undertaken from Moscow and St. Petersburg, large cit-

ies in the western part of the country. Spain received an additional 0.8 million Russian visitors last year. However, according to Dr. Martin Buck, director of Travel & Logistics at Messe Berlin, “The weak rouble, the Crimean crisis and the problems in Ukraine indicate that growth rates in the Russian market are stagnating.”

Cutting edge of time! Swiss technology, precision and design have been famous in the world of watches and clocks for many centuries since the Huguenot refugees brought the manufacture of portable timepieces to Geneva in the second half of the 16th century. At that time, Geneva, the city of Calvin, was a veritable boom town. One of the main driving forces behind the city’s economic prosperity was the city’s goldsmiths, but under Calvinism any display of wealth was frowned upon. Jewellery was banned which forced these craftsmen to find new outlets for their creative talents – and so they discovered watchmaking. Worldwide, wristwatches go back to the 16th century. Robert Dudley gifted an ‘arm watch’ to Elizabeth I of England in 1571. In the beginning wrist watches were almost exclusively for women, men used pocket watches. The First World War and the need for precision timing and syn-

chronised attacks spread the use of wristwatches from the officer class, who had used them in Anglo-Burma and Boer wars, to the soldiers in the trenches. By the end of the war, wristwatches for men were the norm. The first electronic quartz wristwatch was made in Neuchâtel, the mass production of quartz wristwatches took off with the Swatch group of companies and Switzerland continues to be a leader in the production of quality time pieces, from the

multicoloured Swatch and the extraordinarily popular quality Hanowa and Victorinox collections to top of the range collectors’ timepieces. Here in the Canaries, the best, latest designs and most affordable of the watchmakers’ art has been brought to the Islands by Swiss Shop 4 U which specialises in the sale of famous Swiss brands. However they didn’t stop at just watches: They carry a huge stock of classic Swiss products (including a selection

of the ubiquitous Swiss Army Knife which is a standard tool for NASA astronauts). If you are looking for a quality gift for a special person in your life or simply to treat yourself you will find something here to suit all purses, as well as one of the widest choices of top Swiss brands outside Switzerland. In times of job insecurity and crisis-related losses, it’s not only your wallet and the stability of many families that suffers, but the stress and nerves can also have direct effects on physical health. Heart disease, immune system disorders and even diabetes can be the result. “Studies in the United States even establish a direct link between stress and dental health. For example, stress can lead to abuse of alcohol and cigarettes (both have very negative effects on dental health). About 56 percent of people who reported being stressed, have admitted that they neglect their daily dental care in times of crisis,” said dental specialist Dr. Chanut. Particularly tough moments result in an increase of certain hormones which can lead to periodontal disease. “I recommend my patients a balanced diet, exercise for stability and stress reduction and adequate sleep. Regular checkups and your routine daily oral hygiene are also important. Problems are detected early and can be treated. In the long run, anticipation even reduces a patient’s dental care costs over the years,” advises the dental expert. If you wait too long, you often have to dig deeper into your pockets than those who don’t let their mouth regularly ‘wait’. Even (or perhaps especially) in difficult moments, the best prescription is preventative care and to treat yourself to a relaxing break. The result will benefit you from tip to toe, in almost the truest sense of the phrase! Call 922 788 328 to make an appointment at Dr. Chanut’s Los Cristianos practice. UK Pensions – Freedom And Choice By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks

The biggest reforms to UK pensions in almost a century are underway. As more options become available, you need to understand how they affect you and consider what would work best for you in the short and long term. The pension reform was first announced in the March budget. Some initial changes came into effect that month, but the main reforms will start next April. The government launched a consultation on its proposed changes, and on July 21 released its response to the consultation, Freedom and Choice in Pensions. Here is a summary of key decisions reached under the process. The Government believes that individuals should be trusted to make their own decisions with

their pension savings. From April 2015 pension scheme members aged over 55 with defined contribution schemes will be able to access them as they wish – there will be no restrictions on how much you can withdraw. For UK taxpayers, the first 25 per cent will be tax free and the remainder at the individual’s marginal UK tax rate. Expatriates need to consider the tax implications in Spain. Besides Spanish income tax, funds withdrawn from pension schemes will form part of your estate for Spanish succession and UK inheritance tax purposes, so you need to plan for that. It will be a statutory requirement for such transfers to have been advised by a professional financial adviser who is independent of the scheme and authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. Further consultation will be carried out to determine the viability of partial transfers. Transfers defined benefit schemes will not Currently, a 55 per cent death out of unfunded public sector be allowed. benefit tax charge is levied on

pensions that remain invested when the holder dies. The government announced it will cut this charge, with a new rate to be announced in the Autumn Statement. Legislation will be introduced to enable product providers to introduce more flexible annuities. The minimum pension age will increase from 55 to 57 in 2018. Thereafter it will be 10 years below state pension age. This will not apply to certain public sector schemes such as the armed forces, police and firefighters. The government recognises that the changes to the pension tax rules will have implications for the rules relating to Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS). It will consider these implications further to ensure the QROPS rules are appropriate when the new system comes into force. There was no news on the suggested removal of, or change to, the lifetime allowance. These pension reforms are wel-

come, but it is essential that you understand how all the options work for you and weigh up what would be most beneficial for your circumstances and aims. The tax element, both in the UK and here in Spain, plays an important part. Specialist advice is important to make sure you get it right. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. Relaxation massage

The underrated treatment By Elena Herz atmosphere can be particularly Through my long experience as a physical therapist and work in spas, I have experienced how effective relaxing massages can be. Everyday problems and stress can be greatly relieved via a relaxing massage, something that is really important in our busy lives because tension and diseases are frequently linked and debilitating conditions can often be the result of ongoing anxiety and pressure. The effectiveness of stress relief by regular relaxing massages is often underrated, yet a head-to-toe massage with warm oil, to a background of soothing music, in a pleasant

makes little sense to try to slot one into a busy day as the best possible efficacy cannot be achieved if one has to rush to the next appointment. That applies not only to relaxation massages but to any healing therapy. I have often seen this to be the case; in fact, the patients I have treated during their holidays have gained much greater benefits than a stressed patient who takes no resting time. And do not put off booking your massage for too long. “I wish I had started earlier” or “I’m going to indulge more often now” are statements which I often hear. When it comes to choosing

A simple relaxation massage can relieve pain, promote improved circulation, and be intensely detoxifying. Toxins are removed more effectively thanks to the stimulation of the lymphatic system, musculature is relaxed and certain medical conditions can be greatly improved. To get the best out of a relaxing massage you should make sure that you leave plenty of time. It is best to book one after your day’s work is over or on one of your days off: It

Mental health matters

Develop better hearing Over the last few decades a wealth of literature advocating the benefits of positive thinking and speech has appeared, but what about positive hearing? Various studies have now shown that a positive attitude can have a beneficial effect not just on mental health, but on the state of our physical bodies as well. Conversely, the opposite is also true – when we are stressed we often become run down and prone to catching infections such as the common cold more regularly, as chronic stress depresses the immune system, amongst its many other debilitating effects. So, many have begun trying to alter their thought patterns, look for the best in situations, hope for the finest outcomes, have a good self-image and all the other steps that are recommended. However, in amongst all the advice, one of our most

important senses is often overlooked – hearing. Apart from the fact that the majority of us could do with improving our listening skills,

what we do actually hear can have a profound impact on our lives. Who doesn’t still have memories of comments, well meant or not, that friends, fam-

ily or even complete strangers have made about us and which have stuck in our minds for years, if not decades? Unfortunately, the greater

number of these memories will be focused on the negative words we have heard. You can undoubtedly recall perfectly the one time someone said you looked awful, or too fat, too thin, too tired, or any number of comments which made you feel less than good. However, in comparison, how many of the times someone said something complimentary do those words stick in your mind with the same force that the apparently not-so-nice moments do? Unfortunately, this imbalance is caused by our own experiences and biases. Every time we hear (or see) something, that new information is filtered through our prejudices and preconceived ideas. If we have already decided that we are not pretty , clever, appreciated, or whatever, then often, no matter how many times someone

tells us otherwise, we simply do not ‘hear’ what they are saying. The words are going in, but we are changing their significance along the way. “Oh, they don’t mean that,’ we will say to ourselves, or “They are only saying that to be nice, or because they want something or…” What we really need to do is actually hear what people are saying. Yes, there will be occasions when someone has an ulterior motive but the majority of the time people are genuinely trying to give us a compliment, but it often falls on deaf ears. So next time someone says something nice about you accept their kind words gracefully, acknowledge to yourself that they have appreciated something about you and try to consciously add those compliments to your memories.

Dear Dr. De La Flor,

How can I confirm that my stomach cramps and gas are due to lactose intolerance? Do I need testing? Cheers, Gina Dear Gina, Lactose is the main sugar in milk and most other dairy products. Your small intestine manufactures the enzyme lactase to help you digest that precious sugar. When you’re lactose intolerant, you don’t make enough lactase to digest it in a healthful manner. You can’t cure it, but if you modify what and how you eat, you may diminish or even get rid of your troublesome symptoms (bloating, cramps, diarrhoea, painful gas, nausea). Milk and dairy products are the best-known lactose foods, but there are myriad of other ones. Some non-dairy products have a protein called casein, which can have traces of lactose.

Dear Dr. De La Flor,

How do I know if my impotence problem is related to my thing or to my head? Thanks, Anonymous. Dear ‘Anonymous’, Erectile Dysfunction (ED) troubles can be due to ‘thingrelated’ (aka Organic) or headrelated (aka Psychogenic) issues. ED can be defined as the inability to obtain and/or maintain sufficient rigidity of the penis to allow satisfactory and reasonable sexual performance. As a rule of thumb, organic problems are more common, especially after 60. It normally has a gradual onset. There’s a consistent failure of erections, including a loss of the early morning ones, but we observe

When shopping or cooking, read food labels cautiously, looking for the following milkrelated ingredients (curds, dry milk solids/powder, milk by products, whey). To make a diagnosis, your GPs will simply look at your symptoms and whether avoiding dairy products for two weeks relieves them. In order to confirm the diagnosis, a consultant may pursue other tests (Hydrogen Breath Test and/or the Lactose Tolerance Test). Talk with your GP to assist you in planning a wholesome nutritional strategy. Believe or not, many people don’t need to radically stop eating all dairy products. Best wishes. “Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap.” Robert Fulghum, author of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. a normal libido. Psychogenic ones are the opposite: they have a sudden onset, there’s an inconsistent response to erections, early morning erections are present, relationship issues are customary, and it normally occurs before 60. Sadly, there’s up to 80 per cent of men embarrassed to seek help. That figure could only be understood if we lived in France in the 1500s. Why? Because at that time, a woman could charge her husband with impotence. The embarrassed husband will be obliged to become erect and show it in a courtroom… Anyway, please ask your GP for a thorough assessment. Major culprits could include medications, chronic illnesses, poor blood flow to the penis, drinking too much alcohol, and several other modifiable causes. Best wishes.

Eating balanced, wholesome meals helps you obtain all the vitamins and minerals you need from nutrients. However, that may not be enough for those with anaemia or osteoporosis. travelling in the same railway compartment as an elderly man. The student noticed that the man was praying the Rosary. The young man dared to confront him: “Instead of praying the Rosary, why don’t you take the time to learn and educate yourself a little more? I can send you an instructive book.” The old man humbly and sincerely replied: “Please send me the book at this address” and he handed the young man his card. The card read: Louis Pasteur, Paris Institute of Science. Can you imagine the student’s expression? After all, Mr. Pasteur was already in life a bigger-than-life character; a world-renowned scientist for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, pasteurization… His findings saved countless lives. His modesty, his unassuming character and the control of his emotions was also mind-blowing.

When Nikki’s two sons both had important birthday’s, she decided to have a surprise party, but one of the guests also had surprises coming. Ben was 21 and Jack about to be 16 and her friend Gina had just enjoyed her ** birthday, so Nikki (who really does not look old enough to have a 21 year old) threw a party for her boys and generously invited a bunch of Gina’s friends along as a special surprise. A lovely evening at the Treehouse in Chayofa, Arona, was had by all and congratulations to Paul, Nikki and the staff on the organisation, decorations and a great buffet which included this delicious roast pig! formances in the Express Bar Deliveries Cup and Plate, League and Individual Statistics competitions that have run throughout what has been yet another successful season. The league has again gone from strength to strength this year; it consists of two divisions with promotion/demotion dependent on league position at the end of the season. Many notable performances were seen throughout, with the usual smattering of controversy, shock defeats and glorious victories. At the end of the day the league is a marathon and not a sprint and the teams finishing in the top slots quite rightly take the glory for their consistent high standards. The league is truly multi-national, with teams and players from the wider Tenerife South Community, not just the British expats. Presentations of the trophies

to the winners were carried out by representatives from the League Sponsors, Express Bar Deliveries, who have kindly supported us throughout our second season; we thank them for their continued backing. A lively evening was enjoyed by players and supporters from most of the teams. It was heartening to see representatives from so many teams present, showing the real strength of support throughout the league for the activities organised by the hardworking committee. Players of all standards are welcome in the league. If you would like to play pool for a side, please contact the league secretary via either Facebook or by logging on to our web site at www. tenerifepoolleague.com and leaving a message. The new season began on August 5, so by the time this is being read the first matches

will have been played. Will last years’ teams reach the same dizzy heights? Will the new teams in the league make a startling impact? Will some of the old stagers raise themselves to glory? All these questions will be answered as the season progresses. We look forward to a new season and all the excitement and heartbreak it brings. ‘Happy Cueing’. Boxing By George Reed

Hopkins just keeps rolling along They have been asking the same question for the past 10 years, and that is; “How long can Bernard Hopkins keep defying age?” They were asking the question three years ago when, at the ripe old age of 46, the fighter who had set a record for middleweight title defences moved up to light heavyweight and took on the much younger Jean Pascal for the W.B.C. world title belt. He not only gave the former world champion a boxing lesson, but had the cheek to drop to the canvas before the start of the 7th round and do a set of press-ups. Having become the oldest fighter to win a world title, his goal then was to defend a world title successfully when older than the ‘Old mongoose’, Archie Moore, who was 48 when he beat Giulio Rinaldi to retain his light heavyweight world title, which was his last defence. A few years ago Hopkins reached his goal when he entered the ring in Washington D.C. to defend his I.B.F. world title and challenge Kazakhstan’s, Beibut Shumenov for his W.B.A. and I.B.A. world titles. The 49 year old Bernard Hopkins, who has always been nicknamed ‘The executioner’, entered the ring wearing an ‘alien’ mask befitting his updated nickname. We thought this time the old man would run out of puff, but as usual he didn’t, he just did enough to win most of the rounds with his hard righthand punches, while his crafty moves had Shumenov wondering what was coming next. In the early part of his career Hopkins was well known for using rough house tactics against his opponents, one of the dirtiest fighters in the fight game, not shy about using his shoulders and elbows in the clinches, or punching below the belt when he thought the referee wasn’t looking, but over the years he’s found that he didn’t need to use dirty tricks to beat even some of the greatest fighters in the business. Hopkins obviously has vast experience after 27 years as a professional fighter, but his success after all those years owes just as much to the fact that the man is the last of a dying breed who lives the life of a boxer 365 days of the year. That may sound morbid to many people but it’s certainly paid off for Hopkins who, like ‘old father time’, just keeps rolling along. He has certainly had a remarkable boxing career and life. He grew up in Philadelphia and went to prison for five years for armed robbery at the age of 17. He came out of the toughest penitentiary in Pennsylvania at 22 with nine years of strict parole ahead of him. Most in the prison figured he’d be back in six months, tops. But he fooled them all. Most of his friends were drug dealers, hustlers and gamblers so he had to stay focused. Throughout his boxing career he’s probably been the most underrated fighter when it came to defence, when it came to offence, and when it came to his heart. But in the end he fooled everyone time and time again and they all had to eat humble pie. Hopkins has engaged in 31 world title bouts in three decades, which is second all time to the great Mexican fighter Julio Cesar Chavez who had 37 championship fights. So what does the future have in store for B-Hop? Well no one can fight father time, and with his 50th birthday coming up next, surely he doesn’t have more than a fight or two left, but then we’ve all thought that for the past decade!

Canarias basketball side taking shape Tenerife’s only top flight basketball side is taking shape for the coming season and it will have a very familiar look about it. As August got under way, CB Canarias coach Alejandro Martínez had nine members of his 12-man squad finalised and of these only two were new faces and one was a returning one. Martínez pulled off a major coup by bringing star player Blagota Sekulic back from Turkey after his disappointing stint at Fenerbahce, for whom he departed in February, triggering fears that the team would struggle to avoid relegation from the ACB league. However, not only did the La Laguna club survive comfortably and finish a healthy 11th out of 18 but Sekulic’s transfer brought in a welcome injection of cash. The Montenegran, who

Tenerife is to host a major sporting event again in the autumn and this time it is very much a case of holding your breath for it to happen. The European Apnea Championships are to be staged in Santa Cruz from October 1319 and are certain to attract some of the top names in the little-known but popular sport, in which the athletes hold their breath while undertaking a range of disciplines below the surface of the water. Held under the auspices of the World Underwater Federation, the event will see various pool facilities in the capital used for the competition. Canarias will have a very formidable forward line this year now that Fotios Lampropoulos is fit after missing all last season through injury and experienced fellow-Greek Michalis Tsairelis has been signed from PAOK. Staying on for another season, in addition to Sikma, are Nico Richotti, Levi Rost, Ricardo Uriz and Saul Blanco. Uriz will share the playmaking role with the only other new signing to date, Rodrigo San Miguel.

Fans hope Lampropoulos will be back to his best after a season out injured.

Windsurfing

World championships From Gran Canaria (July 14 - 20) to Fuerteventura (July 25 - August 2), the Professional Windsurfing Championships moves to Tenerife from August 4 – 10. Gran Canaria’s leg of the competition was held at Pozo Izquierdo. Sotavento is the host in Fuerteventura, and in Tenerife the venue once again is El Médano. Siam Park is one of the sponsors and they will be organising parallel events in their fabulous wave pool too. The organisers expect a field of 32 men and 16 women for the spectacular competition that is to be staged in Tenerife, and many of the top seeds are already familiar with the waters as they are Canary Island residents. The perfect conditions here for this sport have drawn many windsurfers over the years, quite apart from some excellent home-grown talent.

Congratulations to Balti Balti on winning the Soccer Experience league cup in a classic game. Atlantic Horizons took an early lead within four minutes but were pegged back and soon found themselves 31 down. However, Atlantic were awarded a penalty for a foul on Craig by Jay, and Sam made no mistake from the spot. Within five minutes Atlantic were level when a midfield tussle broke their way, and for once Radek couldn’t keep them out. Atlantic were the stronger team in the later stages of the second half, pushing forward in search of the winner, but it was Balti Balti who took the lead with about 10 minutes to go when a Balti Balti corner managed to hit John on the foot, bounce up and strike Big Irish Craig on his back and into the net. by the local Spanish league providers of youth football in Tenerife, affiliated to the Spanish F.A., to ask Soccer Experience to enter teams into the league to play against Spanish and other teams from all over the Southern area of the Island. We would like to find out from our ex-pat community in Southern Tenerife whether their kids would be interested in joining our new teams? At this stage we are looking at starting two new youth teams and also a Men’s social team. We will provide mid week training sessions at our Los Cristanos facility and the games will be played every weekend at the local full size football facilities. Initially we are looking to start a sevens and under team from our group of Soccer Tots that play every Wednesday at 6pm so if you have not been at the soccer tot class yet and your child is in that age group please come along to the Wednesday class to enjoy the fun and discuss the team options further. Also we are looking to start an elevens and under team (called

Alevin in Spanish). These kids are part of our Friday at 6.30pm pickup games we have for these kids. Also some kids who have had unpleasant experiences at local Spanish teams would rather play in an English speaking based group, as has been highlighted to us about some youth players in Southern Tenerife. Through our existing Men’s league’s every night we have a number of qualified coaches who can and will help with the teams and encourage the kids to have some fun through football and also enjoy some sporting interaction through exercise. So if your child has not signed up with a local Spanish team for next year and is interested in joining our new Soccer Experience teams please send an email or call us to discuss further.

Weekly sixes’ in South Tenerife We would like to invite you to our friendly, well supervised grounds for a game of football. Whether you want to play reg-

ularly each week or just fancy a game whilst on holiday - our Los Cristianos pitch is ideal for any individuals or sixes’ teams wishing to experience some local football action. Contact Us For those who want to play football while in Tenerife or are interested in our annual Veterans International sevens’ tournament please contact us by email: info@soccerexperience.com; or call / text: +(34) 654200470. Or see: www. socexp.com.

The blanquiazules continued their pre-season with victories over Tenisca 3-0, UD Las Zocas 2-1 and UD Ibarra 5-0. In the Ibarra rout, striker Aridane scored four goals in the first twenty minutes as the local team fell apart. When Cristo Martin added a fifth on 25 minutes it looked as if a double-figure score was on the cards but CD Tenerife, so as to not embarrass their hosts it seems, brought on various youth players at half-time. It has been a busy time off the pitch with the league fixtures announced, the cup draw made and six new signings made. The big story is the early date set for the big Canarian derby which will played on the weekend of September 27. Tenerife start their campaign away to Ponferradina on August 24 and are at home a week later against Albacete on August 30 with a 10pm kick-off! The cup draw (to go with the TV driven kick-off times) is also nothing short of scandalous. Incredibly, the away draw at Girona is the blanquiazules’ sixth straight away draw in the Spanish Cup. The two other Canarian teams in the

and Las Palmas were also (surprise, surprise) drawn away from home. In fact, of the last 19 ‘pure draws’ involving Canarian teams, 18 have been away. Warm balls anyone? Rumours abound that the mainland teams do not want to travel all the way to the Canaries on a weekday and the Spanish FA bow to their pressure. As if to soften the blow, CD Tenerife were drawn against Girona on September 10, the very same team they play four days earlier in the league! The pre-season continues with stiffer tests on the way for the blanquiazules. A twolegged tie against rivals Las Palmas for the Mahou Cup awaits, as well as the annual Teide Trophy on August 9 at 8pm in Orotava against RCD Espanyol. A week later on August 17 the official presentation of the team will take place at the Heliodoro Stadium in Santa Cruz against Primera side Elche. Finally, six new signings have been made, the latest being left-sided midfielder Uruguyan Maximiliano Perez and young Basque player Iker Guarrotxena (let’s just call him Iker from now on), both loan deals.

ISLAND CONNECTIONS | EDITION 727

YANCS

Gathering of the greatest On an absolutely glorious summer’s day we found ourselves in Bridlington, on the UK’s east coast, for a gathering of American rod and custom cars. Hosted by the Yorkshire American Car Club, known pertinently as ‘YANCS’, the oneday show attracts exhibitors from across the country. From upsized 4x4s, through beautifully restored American clas-

sics to an itsy-bitsy Isle of Man Peel: the range, quality and beauty of the cars were impressive – not to mention the dedication of their owners. Founding members of the club, Phil and Jackie Walker, have been running the show for the last 21 years. It’s a big job: the majority of the exhibitors spend the whole weekend camping on the site, and the

evening’s cruise through the town attracted over 90 cars, not to mention large crowds lining the streets. YANCS also host two annual get-togethers at Fort Paul, Yorkshire, with one coming up in September. See them on facebook at: yancsyorkshire or email: yancs1@ yahoo.co.uk.

ISLAND CONNECTIONS | EDITION 727

Save the oceans Legendary songwriter and keyboard player Rick Wakeman will give a one-off concert on September 26 as part of the Starmus Festival. Wakeman first became well known as a member of progressive rock band Yes back in the early 1970s and has also had a long and successful career as a session musician, working with stars such as Marc Bolan, Black Sabbath, Lou Reed, Elton John and David Bowie. Born in England in 1949, he started playing piano at the age of five and purchased his first electronic keyboard at 12 years old. He later studied clarinet, piano, modern music and orchestration at the Royal College of Music for a year. During 1970 and 1971, Wakeman was in Folk Rock group the Strawbs, with whom he recorded three albums, before joining Yes. Though initially

only with Yes for around four years, he has often rejoined them in sister projects and reunion tours. He has also had a long and productive solo career and in total has sold more than 50 million copies of his diverse works. He has appeared on several British TV shows, including Countdown, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You and Top Gear, as well as being the host of Gastank, a Channel 4 show featuring interviews and performances with 1970s musicians, as well as the ITV comedy show Live at Jongleurs. His interest in the great unknown that is space is well documented, so the Starmus festival is the perfect setting for him. See: www.starmus.com or email: info@starmus.com for concert information.

Arona Until August 24 The Son Atlántico festival offers a variety of activities on a conservation theme, including talks and a closing concert. See: www. sonatlanticofestival.com.
