According to the latest report from the European Platform against Poverty and Social Exclusion, the Canary Islands is the Spanish autonomous region with the highest percentage of people at risk of poverty: a staggering 44.6 per cent of the population. The ‘At Risk of Poverty and Social Exclusion’ (AROPE) study examines income, access to goods and services, benefits levels and various other indicators of quality of life across the whole of Europe. The Canaries score badly in every aspect, and not only compared to the rest of Spain. They occupied sixth place for poverty levels during 2016, below just two regions in Bulgaria and three in Romania.

Risk or fun? A common occurrence for drivers, you’re going along winding country roads and suddenly, around the next bend, you have a cyclist in front of you and have to stomp on the brakes. On an island that is flooded with cars and extremely popular with cyclists, it’s perhaps no surprise there are run-ins between the different road users. To list just a few: In September of last year, 34 year old traffic policeman Fran Santana saved the life of 19 year old Italian cyclist Ricardo Bridelli, who had lost control on a curve on the TF-28 and fallen 35 metres into a ravine. The officer didn’t hesitate for a moment in risking his own safety in order to descend to the injured person until further rescue teams could come to their aid. In February 2017, on the expressway between Santa Cruz and the suburb of San Andrés, a car driver deliberately hit a cyclist. In May, a drunken motorist on the TF-643 almost killed three cyclists

on a Sunday afternoon, and only recently the Yorima tunnel was closed to traffic for hours because a cyclist had collided with a car in an unlit tunnel. Reasons enough to ask how Juan Marrero Gómez, President of the Tenerife Cycling Federation, views the issue of safety.
There are currently around 1,200 cyclists in the province of Tenerife, and there are over 2,000 cyclists in the Canary Islands. “Rarely are there such incidents as that which happened in San Andrés, most of the time we get along well with the four-wheeled road users.
Unfair behaviour exists on both sides, but the majority of injuries with bikes are simply accidents, as happens in sport”. Nevertheless, he made a plea for mutual respect. “Drivers must maintain a safe distance of one and a half metres when overtaking cyclists. They may also cross single white lines for this purpose. Sometimes this isn’t done and can lead to dangerous situations. Conversely, our cyclists do not always behave fairly. It’s allowed to ride two by two, but not three of them and not to have a natter. Especially in rushhour traffic when everyone’s in a hurry, and that’s why we ask our athletes to show consideration to car drivers. In general, however, I find that given the high number of cyclists and cars on our island, there are comparatively few road accidents and that for me indicates mutual respect”, Marrero commented. Last year, the number of sports’ cyclists in Tenerife increased by 20 per cent. The trend is on the up. In addition, there are those individuals who use bikes because it’s often faster and healthier, as well as those who come to the islands as cycling tourists. In the winter season in particular, foreign cyclists fly in to train. Is this a problem for the local association? "Not at all. We are proud of this - most of the time they are preparing for a big competition. Some use the mountain air around Teide and spend the night at the Parador Hotel. Others work at different altitudes. It doesn't bother us at all. On the contrary, we think it’s nice they use and enjoy the diverse orography of the island as much as we do. We live off tourism and these sportsmen and women indirectly advertise us", says Marrero. And he sees even more advantages. "Perhaps African countries near us would have similarly good training conditions. But what is very important for many foreign sportsmen and sportswomen is the good connections to the rest of Europe via our two airports, as well as the two public university hospitals and the additional private clinics on the island. In the event of an accident, athletes can thus be sure they will be treated according to the latest European standards. And Tenerife is a safe island. Cyclists, even if they are prominent, don't need bodyguards to protect them", he added.

We’ve also made a proposal to make the stretch of road between Santa Cruz and San Andrés an urban road rather than an autovia and to reduce the maximum speed from 90 kilometres per hour to 50 kilometres per hour, especially during rush-hour traffic and on weekends. That would make the traffic flow more relaxed”, explains Marrero.

No wonder then that over the last five years the number of people receiving social aid from the IMAS Institute for Social Attention in Santa Cruz has quadrupled. In 2017 so far, over 30,000 people in the capital are in receipt of financial benefits: almost 8,000 more than the whole of last year, when there were 22,637. The number of families receiving some level of support is currently 17,000, a total of 53,000 people, and the amount increases every year. Incredibly, this is 26 per cent of the population of Santa Cruz, all at risk of social exclusion due to poverty. Óscar García, city councillor for social affairs, explained that over half of the people being attended to don’t currently have a problem with social vulnerability, it is simply a question of finance. He underlined the fact that many are long-term unemployed whose benefits are simply insufficient. García also said that the poverty rate in the capital is similar to the average for the Canaries, a scandalous 44 per cent, of which 13 per cent suffer from severe poverty: the highest rate in Spain. For García, it’s clear that the promised increase of over 35 per cent for the social affairs’ budget for 2018 is nothing more than a logical response from the city council, which knows it has an obligation to help those most in need to cover basic necessities. For instance, according to figures from IMAS, the number of people who don’t even have enough food has increased by 8,000 since 2011. Homelessness is also common. This year IMAS has included a new ‘transit’ apartment for people living rough in the city, which can house four people and is financed by the company which manages the shelter. An agreement with the Provivienda and Raice organisations has also provided the city with 10 apartments for the homeless, which are partly financed by IMAS.
Canaries the worst The Canary Islands currently have the worst poverty levels in Spain, and the European statistics paint an even more frightening picture. Some of the variables that are taken into account include having a monthly income of less than €684, being unable to purchase four out of nine basic goods, and living in a home where several members of the family are out of work or are outside the working age range. The figures released in late October reveal there are 735,000 people living in the Canaries who are at risk of poverty, 13 points above the national average and an incredible 35 per cent of the population. This includes 54.1 per cent of retirees (164,000 people) who receive old age pensions below the poverty level. Additionally, 77 per cent of widows’ pensions are also below the range. Regarding employment income, an average wage is €8,702 a year: €2,006 less than national mean figures. And it gets worse. A shocking 10.8 per cent of Canary Islanders are living in severe poverty. In addition, 61.3 per cent of the population does not have enough money to cope with unexpected costs, compared with the national average of 38.7 per cent. Just over 13 per cent cannot afford to eat meat, fish or chicken every two days, and a rather depressing 76.3 per cent of the current population has difficulty paying their monthly dues. In this context it’s perhaps simple to understand why 61,427 foreigners left the Islands between 2012 and 2016. Unfortunately, for those who were born here, it is not so easy to move on. n

For the 14th year in a row, the Loro Parque Foundation recently awarded its Premio Gorila (Gorilla Prize), this time to Belgian feed manufacturer Versele-Laga. Said company's success story began in 1932, when it initially only produced cattle feed. However, its operations grew quickly and today it’s one of the world’s leading producers of animal feed and care products, including for pets. Their achievements are based on supplying particularly high quality products, such as the parrot provisions the company provides for Loro Parque. The award recognises exceptional performance, environmental responsibility and active implementation of strategies towards the sustainable use of resources. Dr. Patrick Ghylels accepted the prize on behalf of the corporation, which also makes donations to the Loro Parque Foundation, saying, “We are very proud of receiving this award. It is an acknowledgement of the work that Versele-Laga has done

over generations.” He stressed that the challenge of the 21st century was to protect nature, an opinion also expressed by the president of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling. In his congratulatory speech, he referred to the accusations repeatedly raised by animal rights activists against the zoo, especially with regard to the marine mammals housed there. “Our animals are regularly examined by our own and foreign veterinarians and scientists. With the exception
of the orca Morgan, they are animals that have been born in captivity, living second and even third generations in zoos. They are neither stressed nor suffering, as is often claimed. Animal welfare activists often come from completely different professions and yet they believe they know better than internationally recognised scientists. I think that's questionable”, he stated. Some of the animals are also under severe threat in the wild.

Its body was found to have one of the highest concentrations of toxic pollutants (PCBs) ever recorded in a marine mammal. Lulu was a member of the UK’s last resident pod. The level of PCBs found in her blubber were 950mg/kg, more than 100 times the 9mg/ kg limit where damage to the health of marine mammals is known to occur.
In addition, he believes that cases such as Morgan’s will also become more common place. Her loss of hearing led her to become separated from her family as a youngster. She was found off the Dutch coast in an appalling and undernourished state. Kiessling also went on to say, "More people visit zoos than football stadiums or opera houses. exploded in the last 40 years, and at the same time the habitats of wildlife are diminishing, threatening their very existence in many cases.” There are now only around 25,000 lions living on the entire African continent. Compare that to the number of residents in Puerto de La Cruz which is 30,000 people. Elephants are also extremely threatened by poaching. Every day, about 100 elephants are killed. That means that, in the worst case scenario, they will be exterminated within a decade or two. “In the foreseeable future it may be possible that some animal species can only be seen in zoos”, he warned. While the standards of modern zoos are constantly being improved to ensure the animals experience the best possible conditions, the situation in their native habitat deteriorates just as steadily. The expansion and propagation of mankind is continuously taking place in the wild. Getting this under control is one of the major challenges n of the 21st century.

The Canary Islands Folk Fest returns to grace the streets of Arona in mid-November. The annual event, now in its 9th year, will offer four months of open-air shows and culinary treats, as well as a fortnightlong Christmas market, all in a stunning location next to the Atlantic Ocean. Starting on November 16 there will be weekly performances on the Los Cristianos sea front by some of the borough’s best traditional folk groups. These will include Verodal, Amigos de Punta Rasca, the Arona Municipal

Folk School, and Herederos de Chasna, with two performances from 8.30pm onwards every Thursday. On the same day there will be a food and crafts market, also on the promenade, with over 30 stalls selling traditional and contemporary gastronomic and artistic goodies. This will be open from 4pm to 10pm, right through to March 22. In addition, for the first time ever there will be a Christmas Special Market in the town’s Plaza de la Pescadora between December 21 and January 5 (excluding public holidays). As well as being able to pick from a range of gifts, there will be Christmas carols and an array of activities for visitors. The Canary Islands Folk Fest forms part of Arona’s dedicated programme of events which aim to preserve the customs, traditions and identity of the area, whilst incorporating contemporary ideals n and attractions.

After fund raising by the children at the Wingate School and a very generous donation raised by charity events organised by Jackie Ford in memory of Danny Bishop, Wingate is now the proud owner of its own defibrillator. Mrs. Dadswell, the school’s first aid officer, has trained all the staff and will also be teaching the senior students how to use the machine in case of emergencies. Mr. Macrae would like to thank Jackie Ford and all the parents, who are always so supportive of any fund raising events that the school holds. n
Walk for Life Foundation

Following a celebrity launch at the Hotel Villa Cortés in Arona, the Walk for Life 2018 calendar is now available. It’s the first calendar produced by the Canarian Walk for Life Foundation, as the organisation is now called. The name has changed but the proceeds go to the same cause, to help make life easier for breast cancer patients and their families. This year, the calendar focuses on 12 different upbeat visions for life of patients, their families and their carers. The 12 professional photographers who have shared their viewpoints and director Ángel Pérez of the Igualmente Produce Company all provided their services free. The Foundation still needs sponsors for a number of items for this year’s Walk on December 17. Opportunities to get your company logo out there on everything from balloons and champagne flutes to the calendar itself and help a great cause are available from just €150. The calendar will be on sale at the walk, but available beforehand from all Carolina Boix shops and Farmacia Arona from November 4. It costs just €6 and all of that goes to the Foundation. n

How to save lives According to official data, 1,000 people die every day in EU countries as a result of cardio respiratory insufficiency. Only eight per cent of those affected survive an episode of this type naturally, while when CPR is performed with only the hands, the probability of survival rises to 24 per cent (threefold). When AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is used, the survival rates reach 40 per cent.

Motivated by the celebration of the European Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day in late October, the guild of communication professionals and the aquatic sports collectives, including surfers, kite and wind surfers and more, as well as communication professionals, were invited to join a basic course on cardio respiratory reanimation so they would know what to do in the case of a drowning or cardio respiratory insufficiency. It was organised by the Gran Canaria Island Council, the platform for the prevention of accidents in the aquatic environment, Canarias - 1500km of Coast, the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), the Las Palmas Council's department for the sea, and the Canary Islands Surfing Federation. The 90-minute course, which was totally free of charge, forms part of the initiative 'The public save lives' and was held on October 26 in the La Cicer area at Playa de Las Canteras. than traffic accident deaths. The total number of incidents on beaches, coastlines and in pools so far this year is 155. For this reason, it is essential for the public to be aware of the basic manoeuvres needed. As a result of an agreement signed by those responsible for the Canarias - 1500 km of Coast campaign, SEMES, the Canary Islands Surfing Federation and the Cruz Roja (Red
Cross), aquatic sportspeople, who every day become the saviours of bathers who find themselves in situations of risk at sea, learned the protocols for reversing a cardio respiratory arrest, as did the media workers whose work is often carried out at mass events.

The course consisted of an illustrative video showing the CPR process with only the hands. Afterwards, practical classes were given, interacting with different adult and minor mannequins. Finally, there was a demonstration of how to use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the specific actions required when applying it to a person who was drowning. The day concluded with a simulation by Red Cross experts on the beach in the n capital.

Resolving squabbles The borough of Arona has introduced a free mediation service for its residents. Based in the Citizens Participation office (Participación Ciudadana), two professionals will be on hand to help resolve a variety of conflicts,
be they regarding personal matters or disputes with public bodies. People experiencing difficulties such as consumer rights’ infringements, disagreements over land ownership or health and hygiene in public spaces, arguments
between neighbours, or even serious family quarrels can all ask for help in finding an amicable solution to their problems. The aim is to help people avoid the stress of police visits and court cases wherever
possible, using a tried and tested method that has already proven to be hugely successful in other areas. The service is called ‘AronaMedia’ (Arona Mediates), and all you have to do is contact n your local council.
La Sonrisa de María
A tribute album to María F. Couso La Sonrisa de María (María’s Smile) was recorded as a homage to Brian Harrison’s partner, María Fernández Couso (1961-2015). The compositions reflect upon many of the places in Spain that the couple had travelled to, and her role as a radio presenter. Each song was composed by producer Brian Harrison, and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Charly Daicz participated on every track, with collaborations from many guest musicians, vocalists and radio presenters. The album is an eclectic mix of jazz fusion, chill-out and world grooves, complemented with ambient recordings. There is also a distinct international flavour, due to the 19 guest artists originating from 11 countries. Another unique part of this project is that many of the tracks which contain narration or vocals have versions in the Spanish, English and Galician languages. It was recorded between May 2015 and August 2017 in various recording studios in Tenerife, with the ambient recordings from Tenerife, El Hierro, Madrid, León, Tarifa, Almería, Ribadeo, Ribeira de Piquín and the Cíes Islands, in addition to the sound of an antique valve radio set. The final months of the project were occupied with recording Charly’s guitar, banjo, mandolin, charango and vocals, and arranging and editing. Vocalists Anna Rodríguez, Marianne Robiou and Laura Mereb, along with presenters Monica Siddi, Mercedes Lago, Theresa Willson and Ramesh Mahtani laid down their tracks, whilst guest guitarists Darko Mrak, ‘Magnomar’ Mariano, and Fernando Amado recorded their parts, often improvised. Rod Garret played a rare Irish whistle, Sam Pearce the sax and flute, and Fermín Rivero the sax. Matteo worked his fretless bass and Roxy Barreiro played her electric bass for the first time in several years. In August 2017, Brian Harrison made the final finishing touches to the tracks. Over two years of work had brought this unique project to an end, in which over 20 musicians, vocalists and narrators had performed from the heart to honour their friend. La Sonrisa de María, a moving yet uplifting tribute to María, was complete. The album was recorded on the Lemon Jazz Records label, under catalogue number LJR003, and was released on October 17. Abuser arrested
Southern sexual attack News was recently released of an attack on a woman in the Avenida Bruselas de Adeje. Officers from the nearby Southern Commissary of the National Police were alerted of a robbery in progress, but when they got there they found a young woman, a local shop-worker, who claimed to have been sexually assaulted. The victim claimed she was violently grabbed and touched all over her body. Whilst she screamed for help and her attacker tried to force her into a nearby washroom, another man, a mere passerby, intervened and the aggressor took off, trying to fade into the background of the numerous people waiting for the bus. He was quickly located by the officers and identified as A.E, a 21-year-old Moroccan man with previous charges n for sexual assault. He was remanded in custody.

Pioneer garden waste collection service
Puerto de La Cruz Council is in the process of implementing a specific waste collection service for garden garbage. As part of the pioneer provision in the archipelago, 300 brown containers, which have locks operated by keys, are being installed specifically for depositing loose garden waste in areas where homes with gardens are concentrated. According to councillor Ángel Montañés, the residents will be informed as to how to deposit garden rubbish, which must be chopped into small pieces rather than bagged up. They will also receive a key so they can open and close the containers, to prevent them being used for the deposit of other types of waste. The council expects that 900 tons of rubbish will be collected each year, which will be treated using a system which respects the environment. It is hoped that the system will be more efficient, and will discourage the dumping of garden rubbish in the roads, producing a better image for the town. n

Christ’s sanctuary under repair Restoration work on the Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna (Royal Sanctuary of the Christ of La Laguna) began in July, and in mid October the progress to date was inspected by the authorities. Canarian President Fernando Clavijo, Tenerife President Carlos Alonso, La Laguna Mayor José Alberto Díaz, Bishop Bernardo Álvarez and the head of the brotherhood of the Slaves of Christ, Francisco José Doblas, were all present to check out the evolution of the building and refurbishment work, the first phase of which has been budgeted at just under €400,000, the full cost apparently being borne by the Canarian institutions. The image of Christ which is usually enshrined there is one of the most venerated in the Canaries and arrived on the island in 1520. It has been moved temporarily to the nearby Iglesia del Hospital de Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores for the estimated six months that the restoration will take. Under this phase of the refurbishment project the structure is to be repaired and strengthened, the bell tower restored, the roof made waterproof and

new installations against fire and a new electrical system are being installed. The sanctuary, which was the first Franciscan monastery in Tenerife, was founded by the leader of Tenerife’s conquerors Alonso Fernández de Lugo and finished in 1580. It was rebuilt in 1810 following a fire. It’s part of a trio of noteworthy ecclesiastical constructions and faces the Plaza del Cristo, the largest public square in La Laguna. Since
2014, the sanctuary has also housed an exact replica of the famous Shroud of Turin, considered the most accurate copy of the original. The September fiestas celebrating the image of Christ that is housed in the sanctuary are among the most relevant in the city and the Islands, and during the official visit Clavijo underlined the commitment of all the Canarian institutions to the future of this important piece of hisn torical heritage.

Brexit concerns aired
Tim Hemmings addressed a large crowd of concerned British expats in Adeje
Adeje council recently played host to the Deputy Head of Mission to the British Embassy in Madrid, Mr Tim Hemmings, who held a public meeting regarding the forthcoming ‘Brexit’. To a packed hall of over 80 British nationals resident in the borough and other parts of South Tenerife, Mr Hemmings was able to reassure those pre-
sent that they were not about to be “kicked out of Spain”, and that, in line with recent and ongoing conversations he and his team were having with Government representatives both in the UK and Spain, the rights of British residents continued to be the top priority in the negotiations. Mr Hemmings was in Adeje with Charmaine Arbouin, the
Consul for Southern Spain and the Canary Islands, and Helen Keating, vice-consul in Tenerife. Prior to the meeting the delegation was officially welcomed to the borough by Adeje deputy mayor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera. The councillor stated that “Adeje is a borough where over 120 different nationalities live together in harmony and with no prob-
lems”, and saw no reason why that would not continue to be the case. She also stressed the importance of being on the ‘padrón’, the record of residents, “and making sure you renew your registration when required to”. Mr Hemmings outlined the current state of discussions to the crowd, underlining how many areas of agreement there now are between the British Government and the EU team. Nevertheless, when the floor was opened up to questions, it could be seen that people were concerned about a range of issues, from taxation rights to pensions, passports and the possibility of dual nationality (currently not available), and the likelihood of needing visas to travel to and from Spain in the future. The visit was welcomed by all those who attended, though there is still a level of anxiety amongst British expats which will not be resolved until final agreements have n been reached.

Gran Canaria is go! Gran Canaria may yet have one of the best water parks in the world, despite a plethora of problems that have held back works. The Loro Parque Company, headed by the Kiessling family, has been trying to expand their hugely successful theme park business to the island for several years. Having purchased land to build a water park in the borough of San Bartolomé de Tirajana half a decade ago, the entrepreneurs became increasingly disillusioned with the project as they were presented with an endless stream of administrative challenges. Not the least of these was a range of objections regarding the channelling of water through the El Veril area to and from the coast. Thankfully, Loro Parque and the local council finally signed an official agreement in mid-October for the installation to go ahead. Environmental budget for Santa Cruz
Uncontrolled sea accesses A study recently carried out by the Santa Cruz Mountains Unit revealed that there are up to 35 uncontrolled sea access points in the Santa Cruz borough. These places are mostly located in Anaga, but there are also some on the coast of Añaza. The locations which do not qualify as bathing areas are nevertheless used by residents on a regular basis. Faced with such a high number, the city's councillor for the environment, Carlos Correa has announced that in 2018 €40,000 will be allocated to placing information panels at all these points detailing the dangers, for example the possibility of a risk of rockfalls or the degree of difficulty in accessing the coast, as some of the very narrow trails pose a considerable degree of danger. Correa said that he did not want to give precise details of the locations of the places, because of their lack of security and added that his department wants to minimise the coastal risks which are due to a lack of adequate information.

Gary Nelson The interesting thing about this lovely island called Tenerife is the variation you have, and when it comes to entertainment this is certainly no exception, which is why our spotlight falls on someone who first came to Tenerife around 12 years ago. He has had a very interesting career, to say the least, and is now the resident compere at St Eugens in San Eugenio, where there is live entertainment on from 8pm every night, starting off with a musician and followed by two acts per night. Yep, that’s right: two acts every single night, plus their new resident compere gracing the stage to hold it all together. So we thought we would share Gary’s adventure with you and read how his journey took him to the King of Bars, St Eugens… Gary Nelson has been involved in the entertainment industry for 33 years now, first gracing the stage singing in a school production at the tender age of five but working professionally since he was 17. An acclaimed club and party DJ in the 1980s, working in the bars and clubs in and around The Midlands, Gary set up his own entertainment business in the 90s based in his hometown of Birmingham.

A versatile singer, Gary has performed in an Elvis show, a Rat Pack show, a Beatles group and a functions band performing popular songs from across the decades. Having established a strong reputation for
delivering quality entertainment solutions, he has enjoyed excellent working relationships with big name clients in the UK, including Tesco, Diageo, Lloyds TSB, Pertemps, Ramada and Marriott Hotels, and various sporting clubs such as Birmingham City football club, Warwickshire County Cricket Club and many private clients both as a performer and an agent, even setting up a consulting business offering advice to bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels focusing on all aspects of entertainment,
hospitality and customer relationship management before moving to Tenerife. The first 100 weeks he was here he flew back to England 67 times, 134 flights backwards and forwards to honour work commitments, but eventually settled here in the sunshine. Since then he has worked in many of the island’s top venues, including Brewers Droop, Highland Paddy, Blaydon Races, Drunk n Duck, Frankies, Wild Geese, Irish Rose, Irish Rover, Jags, Java Bar, Harvey’s, Star Bar,
Pheasant Plucker, Wali Haii, The First and Last, The Theatre Bar and more, initially covering other people’s nights off, but once settled here enjoying very successful periods as resident compere and entertainer in some of the island’s classiest and busiest venues such as Volare, Drop Inn and most recently Bar El Canario. With a huge amount of experience managing entertainment programmes and events and many years spent on stage, Gary has achieved enormous success everywhere he has applied his skills, knowledge and experience and is looking forward to the new and exciting opportunities that present themselves at St Eugen’s. His style is friendly and positive and he has many followers amongst regular holidaymakers who visit the island. A talented and versatile singer, Gary has many amusing stories to tell about his life and experiences with a host of celebrity friends. Many of his very best friends on the island are people who started out as customers who appreciate his caring commitment to them enjoying their holiday experience and who’ve since moved here to Tenerife, and performers who value his professional attitude to his work. Often asked if he misses the UK, the only thing apart from family, who can obviously come and see him here, is cricket. Gary played at county level as a child and then in Birmingham, Staffordshire and Cotswold leagues, winning many trophies. He was always
lucky to be good at sports, participating competitively at football, cricket, rugby, tennis, golf and being actively involved in powerboat racing, a sport in which his father was a successful designer and constructor. In Tenerife his passion away from work is golf, which he plays regularly and gives him a welcome few hours away from the spotlight in the fresh air with friends. Coming from a musical background, with his grandfather playing in orchestras and his family famous for making violin varnish, Gary spent his early years listening to Elvis. Terrified of the sound of the vacuum cleaner, his mother played her old records to drown out the sound of her hoovering. Gary still sings an Elvis song for his Mum every night on stage. A self confessed perfectionist, he has an eye and ear for detail. If something has to be done it has to be done right. An ideas man with strong commercial acumen and an abundance of talent across all facets of the entertainment industry, Gary is considered to be a true and passionate professional and genuinely nice guy. La Orotava
Characteristic old lantern restored Following a complete restoration, the San Francisco lantern has recently been re-installed at the entrance to the old Hospital de la Santisima Trinidad in La Orotava, recovering its characteristic image. The deterioration of its supporting structure leading to the risk of its falling down, and poor general condition led to this lantern being removed and entirely restored. Its historical origin is uncertain, but it is believed that it was originally installed there during the early decades of the 20th century. The giveaway is the design of lines inspired by plants and the geometric composition, covered by monochrome stained glass. The intricate restoration which was undertaken by hand, has taken over six months to complete as the lantern showed considerable deterioration and also had to be adapted to the current regulations, incorporating LED technology. The Hospital on Calle San Francisco just up the hill from Casa de Los Balcones, now takes care of the mentally ill but is a former convent famous for an unusual swivel device in the main doors where unwanted babies were left for the nuns to care for. n

Social media scare Parents are warned to be on the lookout for the current ‘test’ that is doing the rounds on social media. Youngsters are being urged to disappear for 48 hours, cutting all communication with their families, and points are awarded by the instigators based on how many messages their nearest and dearest post on social media in an attempt to find them. The initial warning was published in The Independent newspaper, which claims that several cases have already been reported in Ireland. They added that it’s a new version of a similar experiment which was going around Western Europe with a time limit of 72 hours. Only recently a dangerous trial called the Blue Whale Game went viral on social media, with a series of up to 50 different challenges ending in suicide. In July of this year, the creator of that macabre game was arrested and sent to prison for n three years.

Helping Hands Tenerife is a fully registered children’s charity based in the south of the island which was set up in 2009. Their mission is to help
the less fortunate children in Tenerife, hopefully put a smile on their faces and help them to live a full life. On the last Saturday afternoon
in October, they held a fundraiser at the Palms Bar in San Eugenio Alto, in the form of a Halloween Party. It was well attended by people of all
ages, including tiny tots, many of whom had dusted off their Halloween costumes early to become ghouls, ghosts, skeletons and witches for the day. During the afternoon there was entertainment for the children, a children’s costume competition, a raffle, an auction, and of course plenty of fun! With the raffle and the auction, Helping Hands raised a massive €2,700 which will go towards helping a nineyear-old girl who has a rare brain tumour. She needs more treatment, which cannot be offered on the island. Liz Montague at Helping Hands would like to thank her helpers on the day, Janet, Anne, Margaret and Steph, as well as the compere Derek Lynes and of course Kirsty and Mark at the Palms Bar for hosting the event. Thanks also go to everyone who donated money, bought raffle tickets or an item n in the auction.

The contract for the work on the coastal walk between the Mirador de La Paz and the Hotel Semiramis in Puerto de La Cruz has now been assigned to Satocan. The budget is just over €1.3 million. Work should start in early November and is expected to last about 14 months. A couple of technical problems that came up earlier have been overcome, and Carlos Alonso, Tenerife’s President, who also heads up
the Urban Consortium for this matter, and the town’s mayor were both delighted with this move forward which mayor Lope Afonso believes will be a plus for the town and for tourism. Other projects on the drawing board for Puerto at the moment include the renovation of the changing rooms and toilets at Playa Jardín and the repositioning of the hydraulic equipment for the nearby fountain n on the same beach.

These days, the institution of marriage has moved onto the back burner, so that many of today's couples live together without being married. This is a situation that legislature had not fully taken into account previously, but is now extending widow’s rights to cohabiting couples. To begin with, a ‘pareja de hecho’ or ‘domestic partnership’, as defined by doctrine and jurisprudence is considered to be a free, public and stable union of two people, regardless of their sexual orientation, provided that they are in a relationship analogous with marriage. Widow's pension for legal domestic partnerships spouses. A domestic partner is required to conform to two types of regulations; economic regulations and a set of partnership requirements. Economic requirements are case specific. The financial situation of the couple in question is studied and the income of each of the partners at the time of death is taken into account, so in this article we specifically focus on the requirements of domestic partnership, which are listed below: Neither member is prevented from marriage or already married to someone else. There has to be a demonstrable stable cohabitation with the deceased to the date of death of the deceased which has lasted at least five years. The cohabitation or formalisation of the relationship must be in the public records (this
is known as registration as a ‘pareja de hecho’) which must have occurred at least two years before death, and they must be a couple at the time of death. This question is of interest because even though many couples live together they never formalise the partnership in the eyes of the law. At the time of the death of one partner, the remaining member may try to collect the pension, but the claim is rejected because the law says that we need to fulfil not only all of the economic requirements, but a principal and indispensable requirement is that the couple is registered or formalised in public documents (similar to marriage). Dance extravaganza
A little Eastern promise Head to Los Cristianos on November 10 for a dance show with a difference. The Bellylusion Oriental Dance Company will be taking viewers on a journey of movement and music for their Travesía performance. The theatre show fuses Eastern dance with styles from around the world in an exciting amalgamation of sound and vision. From Egypt to India, through the Balkans, Spain, France, Hawaii, and the Far East, the whirlwind performance will have viewers on the edge of their seats. Points-based licence system The Spanish points system gives eight points to drivers who’ve held a licence for less than three years and 12 for those who’ve held it longer. If no traffic offences are committed after three years, three points are added, and a further point every three year period up to a maximum of 15. Drivers can recuperate points by completing a 12 hour re-education course or 24 hours if they’ve lost all points. Once the course is passed, drivers are awarded eight points on their licence.

Car manufacturers Seat have shelved all marketing activities for the foreseeable future due to the “current political situation”, according to representatives of the company. Seat operations are based in Martorell, Barcelona, an area of Catalonia that is presently undergoing upheaval due to the region’s campaign for independence. Causing the greatest crisis for Spain since democracy was officially introduced in the early 1980s, Catalonia’s attempts to hold a referendum, and possibly break away from Spanish rule, have lead to endless public demonstrations and even violent intervention from the National Police Force. The situation is still unresolved, with Spain threatening to revoke Catalonia’s autonomous powers. Seat perhaps believes that the unrest will detract from any advertising they undertake. One of the moves the company has delayed is the announcement of the winning name of its new SUV on October 15. The SUV is the first one to be named by public choice, with voting having being finalised on September 25. The name ‘Teide’, after the Islands’ iconic volcano, made it through to the semi-finals, but unfortunately not the final four. These are Alborán, Aranda, Ávila and Tarraco, all areas of Spain. Had Teide won the vote it would have been the second Tenerife title to have been given to a Seat vehicle in a year. Back in July, the company’s latest compact crossover was named the ‘Arona’, after the south Tenerife borough. n

In 2010 they merged with the testicular cancer event Tacheback and in 2012 they were listed as one of the top 100 NGOs in the world. Startlingly on average men die six years earlier than women. The Movember Foundation aims are to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments and ultimately to reduce the number of preventable deaths. Participants, known as Mo-bros, are invited to Move, the start of a
more active life and a healthier lifestyle. This is done by setting a goal at the beginning of the month and walking, running, cycling or swimming towards that goal – raising money along the way for the cause. Then of course those who are able can grow a moustache and have a sponsored shave at the end of the month. The goal of Movember is to, “change the face of men’s health”. In addition to a healthier lifestyle, they encourage men to be aware of possible genetic cancer histories in their families and to have annual check-ups. The Foundation runs a number of events to encourage participation throughout the year. Film your participation in a short video (no more than four minutes) and you could win a Moscar! There are prizes in several categories. Or you could become the International Man of Movember and be the face of the movement for a whole year.

If some of your male acquaintances are looking decidedly more hirsute this month, it may be that they’ve joined the Movember movement. It was a group of young men in Adelaide who coined the term, a mix of the Aussie short form for moustache and the month of November. They raised money for the RSPCA by growing moustaches throughout the month in an exercise they called “Growing whiskers for whiskers”. Then in 2004 an entirely unrelated group of 30 men in Melbourne grew moustaches for 30 days to raise awareness for prostate cancer and male depression. This

Don’t let your dog chase the cat around. Keep them separate for a few days. Animals need time to get to know each other’s smells and their new home before they can deal with getting to know another animal. Cats and dogs are more likely to fight or be unhappy if you force them together suddenly. Don’t let the first encounter with your dog be a bad one. Mixing the animals’ smells by stroking the cat then the dog and vice versa also helps. Let them sniff out where each other has been without the other being present. Wait to introduce them until your cat seems relaxed and ready, and both are calm. Your cat should have a place where it can always get away from your dog, something high usually, even the top of a sofa will do. If your pet hasn’t lived with another animal before, it won’t immediately know how to deal with the situation so they’ll need time. You may find your cat becomes the boss. K9 Genji returns to K9 When Genji was stolen from the refuge in the early hours of September 30, circumstances pointed to this being a targeted attack, perhaps by someone who knew or had seen Genji previously. News of the robbery was quickly shared everywhere – social media, specialist animals lost and found and local police facebook pages, in newspapers and on radio. Yet there were no sight-
ings of handsome and distinctive Genji and, as days went by, everyone started to fear that he wouldn’t be seen again. Then twelve days on, out of the blue, news arrived that he’d been spotted wandering alone on the streets of a Santa Cruz suburb. A member of the public recognised Genji from the facebook appeal, picked him up and took him to the police. They checked his chip and drove him back to the refuge within the hour. He was a little thinner but otherwise in great health and spirits and, after some good food and lots of attention, he seemed none the worse for his ordeal. It’s a huge relief to have this lovely guy back safe and sound. And, great news: Genji has now found his own special forever home and family. Christmas Party This year’s fundraising Christmas Party is on December 9 at Showtime, Adeje (exit 78, TF1). They love sloping land as it has good drainage, so our rugged mountainsides are perfect. They like a slightly acidic, nonlime soil that is generally moist. They prefer cooler locations
but are best in full sun. Here in the Canary Islands they grow abundantly on northern slopes between 600m and 1500m and even higher, though they will tolerate slightly lower altitudes as long as conditions can be reproduced. If you are hoping for nuts, you will need to plant at least two different varieties to encourage cross pollination, unless you live in an area where there are already chestnut trees close by. These can be bought from various garden centres. Space the trees more than eight metres apart, excavating a hole at least twice the width of the root ball. Mulch around the base and keep it well watered, applying a balanced fertiliser at the beginning of the growing season.
The first flowers will appear in spring. The most plentiful will be the male catkins: narrow, vertical yellow strands which grow between 10cm and 25cm long. At the base of these you will find the more subtle female flowers, which, after fertilisation, go on to enclose the chestnuts in their typical spiny burr. It can take up to eight years or even more before your tree starts to produce nuts but it’s one investment that is well worth making. Chestnuts are an incredibly healthy snack or addition to a main meal. They are lower in fat than other tree nuts and, although also slightly lower in protein, it is high quality. They are also jam-packed full of vitamins B and C, as well as many essential minerals. n

We at Island Connections are sure in the knowledge that one of the best ways to help yourself, and the economy, is to buy locally – even if you are just visiting for a short time. Canarian farmers harvest an extensive range of crops, which can be seen growing in the typical stepped-terrain farms around the Islands. Products range from tropical fruits, such as mangoes, to worldwide staples like lentils, potatoes and onions. According to the agricultural group COAG-Canarias, prices of fresh fruits and vegetables differ greatly between the amount the farmers receive and the sale price in the supermarkets. For instance, towards the end of last year, small marrows, which the farmers were paid just €0.07/kilo for, retailed at €0.84, and leeks sold at €0.36 were passed onto the consumer for around €2.23 a kilo. Many of the prices don’t even seem to cover the cost of
production - and this is when subsidies became necessary to keep farms from disappearing, which, like the hiked prices, also come out of our pockets. Enter the farmers markets, where the grower can sell directly to the customer without an intermediary. They are dotted all over the Islands, with at least one in almost every town. They allow customers to purchase fresher, higher quality produce at cheaper prices, and the farmers receive a fair payment for their efforts. This enables them to maintain or raise the
standard of their crops and uphold productivity levels – it’s a win-win situation. In these markets you will be sure to see a variety of seasonal products, as well as some local home-made delicacies such as preserves, honeys and Canarian goat’s cheese. A selection of meats and fish can also be found among the stalls, along with an assortment of cakes, pastries and biscuits. Buy locally, eat healthily, pay fairly – this is one way we can all help each other. Caring about carbohydrates
By Debbie Gilbey For many, carbohydrates are the dreaded and most feared macro nutrient of them all. Numerous clients, when they first start with me, explain how they completely avoid carbs, as if they were the devil incarnate. Yet out of these people their food diary is littered with fruit. Not just the odd apple or banana as a quick and healthy grab and go snack, but huge quantities of fruit. So it’s worth giving a quick reminder to everyone: fruit and vegetables are also sources of carbohydrates. One client proceeded to tell me that by midday she was not only starving, but felt perma-

You may be surprised to learn that milk is also technically a carbohydrate as it contains lactose and galactose (milk sugars). There are many conflicting articles about good versus bad carbohydrates, high versus low GI, simple versus complex etc. The bottom line is that natural, unprocessed foods created by nature are generally considered the best. Palms A were good value for their runners-up spot last season, but have had a poor start this time around. Ritz-Carlton, Abama tournament The first golf tournament organised by the Ritz-Carlton, Abama which took place on October 21 at Abama Golf in the south west of Tenerife, became the perfect event at which to collect funds for the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). Playing in the Stableford Individual system, 90 players took part. On a sunny day without any wind, the results were great in all
four categories played. The outstanding winners were Susana Fernández de Caleya in the only women's category, with Thomas Baggley, Fabio Borrelo and Francisco Delgado Arrate, the winners in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd sections respectively. There were other prizes for the closest ball and longest drive. The players were able to enjoy tasty gastronomic delights at various holes on the course, and later at the

Draw specialists but great hopes for the future What is very clear is that if CD Tenerife can play for the rest of the season with this quality and intensity they will finish high in the league. At the moment they have become the draw specialists in matches they should have won. delayed the kick off for 40 minutes and at one stage, as fans stood in the pitch black, it looked as if the game would be called off all together. Eventually the lights did come on and the 14,000 spectators present witnessed a gripping spectacle despite the lack of goals. This was incredibly Tenerife´s first home cup game since 2010 and they did not let their fans down against their La Liga opponents from Barcelona. Manager Marti made seven changes from the team that
had played in the league days before, a side with a youthful heart, in fact the whole defence apart from Alvedaño were aged around the 20 years old mark. Carlos Abad got his chance to shine in goal and once again the young keeper, scouted by Tottenham Hotspur, proved to be a commanding figure, we will do well to keep hold of him in the future. The best chance of the game fell to Brian Martin early on in the second half but his one on one chance was saved by Diego
López in the Espanyol goal. Tenerife pressed, chances were being created but all the shots seemed to fall into the hands of the rival keeper. With minutes remaining a fierce drive by Honduran Bryan Acosta almost won the game for Tenerife but López in goal pulled off a worthy save to deny the blanquiazules. The team received a standing ovation as they left the pitch and they knew they were still in the tie with the 2nd leg planned for Wednesday November 29. 29/10/2017 CD Tenerife 0 Osasuna 0 Back to league matters and Tenerife faced the second division leaders Osasuna in the Heliodoro in front of another good crowd of 13,762 supporters. Slowly but surely Tenerife are recuperating their main players back from injury, the frontline especially has been decimated recently but it could take a few games for the likes of Samuele Longo and Villar
to get into their stride. This was a carbon copy of the cup match a few days before. Tenerife were by far the better side but just failed to find the net. This time they were even closer than Thursday night in making the breakthrough with shots blocked off the line and a second half penalty miss by Serbian Malbasic. The week before Juan Carlos had netted from the spot with class, so why swap penalty takers now? Osasuna were never in the game and this was surprising considering they were the league leaders. The team from Pamplona, the running of the bulls town, came for the point and gained it but they were nothing special. The game finished 0-0 which was disappointing but the standard of the Tenerife play is improving all the time. Next up for the blanquiazules is a trip to Sevilla to play Sevilla Atletico on Saturday November 4 before facing Cultural Leonesa at home on Saturday n November 11 at 5pm.
