Teatro Timanfaya

Fans of the Timanfaya Theatre in Puerto de La Cruz are trying to prevent its closure and are using a catchy slogan to catch people’s imaginations: ‘Que no se apague la luz’ (Don’t switch off the lights).

Since 2011, director Mónica Lorenzo has been fighting to keep the cultural venue open, but she’s about to throw in the towel: by January 1, 2018, it will be all over. “It has been a difficult, though satisfying road. I have given way to despair, apathy and disillusion, but I recovered again, as I believe that everything is surmountable with commitment, perseverance and creativity, and that things are possible if you are capable of awaking interest and illusion. But reality does not always follow this criteria and, despite the fact that I want to believe in a utopian perspective and that I have tried to frighten off defeatism with all the resources available to me, I cannot fight against the reality that prevents the doors of the Timanfaya Theatre remaining open”, she concluded.

Despite economical entrance charges, the 200 seats in the charming theatre have not always been full and lack of funds meant many tasks were carried out by Mónica or left undone. Another factor in the closure are

The gap between the monthly burden of outgoings and real income became a balancing act that was no longer manageable. “I’m told by the Puerto de La Cruz City Council that

they can’t promote the theatre because it’s a private company. I am normally subsidised by the cultural office of the Island Council with €15,000 a year, but I still haven’t received the 2017 subsidy and it’s already November. That’s no way to keep the theatre going”, is Mónica’s honest summary. A statement from the Cultural Affairs Office is still pending.

Of course, when savings are necessary, cultural programmes are often the first to fall victim to the red pencil. However, Mónica also admits that she took over the theatre on her own initiative and did not expect to be supported.

Although she wished she had been, especially as socially marginalised groups use the theatre as a contact point. The Timanfaya is a meeting place for all kinds of people who implement ideas together, such as the Kings Bartlett choir, Atlantic Jazz Lab or Asmipuerto.

The fans mourn the loss. “We are all deeply concerned and I do not want to believe that this platform, which helps people and gives so much, will cease to be”, emphasises one supporter. An attempt at fighting back will take place on December 8 from 6pm onwards in the form of a symbolic festival of lights. Musicians, clowns and artists of all kinds will be performing from 9pm onwards. n The proceeds will go to the theatre.

Playa Shop centre closed

Disco floor cave-in injures 40 The ground collapsed under the feet of partygoers in the Butterfly disco in Adeje during the last weekend in November.

In the middle of a Saturday to Sunday nights’ entertainment, at 2.30am, part of the venue’s floor gave way and fell approximately four metres to the storey below, suddenly disappearing from beneath the attendant guests. One singer who had just displayed her talent was pitched into the big hole as were many visitors of mixed nationalities and ages. Thankfully, no-one was underneath at the time of the collapse due to the premises, formerly a bingo hall, being unused.

The discotheque is located on the second floor of a popular shopping centre in the Costa Adeje tourist zone. The emergency services’ response was immediate and nine fire brigades plus members of the National Police rushed to the scene to secure the area and rescue those involved. Some 22 people with varying degrees of injuries received on-site aid.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are still pending. There are parallels being drawn to the incident of April 14 last year, when a property in Los Cristianos collapsed and seven people lost their lives. Experts later came to the conclusion that reconstruction work in the building

was the cause of that tragedy.

However, not until investigators have had time to conclude their examinations will there be any answers.

At the time of going to press, nine people remained in hospital, none of which “are considered to be in a critical conn dition”.

Drug ring busted

As part of Operation Tridentis, the Guardia Civil were recently able to break up a significant criminal gang dedicated to drug trafficking which was based in La Palma.

Seven members were arrested and ten kilos of cocaine, three kilos of hashish, 21 vehicles, a property and a company were seized. The organisation had been under suspicion since February. The drugs were smuggled from the Spanish Peninsula to the Canary Islands and also between the Islands in lorries with specially made double floors. One of the sophisticated opening systems for the double floor utilised the vehicle's own electronic circuits, such as lighting and window controls, which had to be switched on in the correct sequence to open the floor hatches. The second system consisted of a compartment in the lower part of the chassis which was closed with a metal flap. If this was activated with a special key, the door to the hiding place opened automatically. The organisation also used an inter-

island truck loaded with heavy metal plates. At first glance, the cargo did not look suspicious as the metal plates were compact and properly secured as intended for heavy loads.

But there were actually cavities inside which were used to smuggle the drugs. The organisation, based in Los Llanos de Aridane, La Palma was on an expansionary course in the other Islands and generated

monthly sales reaching millions of euros.

The investigators boarded a lorry at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife port which was about to be loaded onto the ferry to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. After dismantling the plates on board, the narcotics squad seized seven kilos of cocaine. The driver was immediately arrested as a suspected member of the organisation. Within a few

hours, another six people were arrested in Granadilla de Abona and Arona in Tenerife and in Los Llanos de Aridane in La Palma.

The two leaders, a couple, live in Los Llanos de Aridane, where the woman ran a restaurant in the centre of the town, presumably used for money laundering.

During several searches, ten kilos of cocaine, three kilos of hashish, 21 vehicles, some of which had double floors, and a high

value property were seized. In addition, more than €9,000 in cash, numerous mobile phones, a hydraulic press and chemical additives for manipulating cocaine were confiscated. Many of the organisation's accounts were blocked and a company and the restaurant were sealed.

The organisation consisted of three Colombians, one Moroccan and three Canari-

ans, two men and one woman.

The members are between 36 and 50 years old. Now that a large part of the organisation's property and drug stock has been uncovered and seized, the gang is considered to be dismantled.

However, the investigators are not yet ruling out further arrests. The seven suspects were remanded in custody with no recourse to bail. n

Story telling festival in Los Silos

A river of fine words The International Festival of ‘Cuentacuentos’ (storytelling) in Los Silos, will be celebrated for the 22nd time this year.

Storyteller Ernesto Rodríguez Abad says, "Perhaps this festival is a river of words that stirs us, moves us, makes us feel, think, play and grow. It’s intended to satisfy the Canary Islands' decade-long thirst for culture and poetry. The thirst of human souls for beautiful words and stories is like the Earth's thirst for rainwater." The poet Jorge Manrique comments, "The stories tell of us, of what we were and what we will be.

Our lives are like rivers flowing into the sea to die."

Water is therefore one of the central themes of this festival, with numerous stories revolving around it. This also applies to the play Las Aguadoras, which tells the story of the water saleswomen in a desert who sell water to the tourists who come to their village. The thirst of the visitors is quenched and they are told the stories that the desert sand calima brings with it. They are the water for the souls who are wounded by life.

The play, which is written and directed by Andrés González Novoa, will be performed in Plaza La Luz from December 5 to 7 at 7pm, on December

8 at 7.30pm and on December 9 at 1.30pm. Admission is free of charge.

Also included in the events are the popular breakfast story sessions and the horror stories with a guaranteed scary character, shortly before midnight.

A further highlight, among many others, is Balcones de Poesia, during which stories are recited from each of the balconies around the plaza.

The violinist Eugenia Jaubert de Valcárell will give them an additional touch of mystique.

On the final day, December 9, the Jaster Luis Creaciones Ensemble invites you to a street parade in front of the cultural

centre under the name Sueños de Steampunk. At 12.30pm Claire Muiereann Murphy from Ireland will be telling stories in English - From Mouth to Ear - at the IES Daute school.

A session of stories about an old lighthouse made of crystal, by Cyranas, will take place in the former convent of San Sebastián at 6pm. The special thing about it is that this story will be told in Spanish, in sign language. Seven anglers dead

Killer waves During the course of this year, a total of 16 anglers have suffered seriously for their favourite hobby, some of them losing their lives.

Six were badly injured, one with minor injuries, two were rescued, but tragically seven lost their lives in the ocean.

The last victim was a 36-yearold Romanian who fell into the Atlantic on the second weekend of November at Arucas in

Gran Canaria and was found two days later. A special Guardia Civil diving team recovered his body at 10.15am on the Monday morning from a depth of 33 metres, about 200 metres from the shore.

The death toll among fishermen in 2017 is thus already as high as it was for the whole of 2016, with three fishermen losing their lives in both Gran Canaria and Fuertventura and

one in Lanzarote. A total of 77 people have drowned on the Canary Islands so far.

This includes always finding out beforehand about the sea conditions, never going alone and informing family or friends about the place where you plan to fish. A survival vest and headgear, like a kind of helmet, is recommended. Quintana reminds us that many anglers slip or fall and injure their heads.

Many people lose consciousness and therefore drown. Outside of this, he insists that it should be a condition for issuing a fishing licence that the person can swim. More people in the Canary Islands are still unable to swim than was originally thought. In order to avoid accidents, it is also recommended to wear non-slip footwear, appropriate clothing and adequate sun protection to avoid, for example, any weakness. However, the most important thing in assessing risk is still what seems to be the most uncommon thing of n all - common sense.

Gran Canaria street trading

Toxic jewellery on offer During mid-November, the PAFIF customs and tax investigation service in Vecindario, Gran Canaria, denounced a 64-year-old man for violation of Royal Decree 1801/20013 on product safety, as he was caught selling costume jewellery which had been made with poisonous berries.

On offer in the street were 25 bracelets, four rosaries and several earrings which had been manufactured from paternoster pea berries, as well as earrings with seeds of the genus Ormiosa Cosidea. In addition, 150 seeds were confiscated which are also considered to be toxic, both in terms of ingestion and of contact with an open wound.

The paternoster pea is a climbing plant that originates from the mountains of India and Indochina, but is also found in Africa and America. The red fruits with a dark stain are particularly decorative and are therefore often used for the production of jewellery. Due to their toxicity, for safety reasons they are not allowed in Spain. The suspect cannot claim to be ignorant, as in November 2014 he was reported for selling the same jewellery in the south east of the island and was made aware of the risk. The street n vendor has now appeared in court in Maspalomas.

West Leo drilling rig arrives

Granadilla Port begins operating The long disputed port of Granadilla de Abona, in the southeast of Tenerife, started operations in the penultimate week of November.

The first stop-off was by the West Leo oil rig, owned by multinational company Seadrill. Previously, it had been anchored in Zone II of the Santa Cruz port.

During a seven-hour journey, the Tenerife, Canarias and Muletán tugs towed the working platform from Santa Cruz to the new port. Ricardo Melchior, President of the Santa Cruz Port Authority, explained that: "The inauguration was a big moment. This will be a new dock for the Port of Santa Cruz, which will be responsible for the maintenance and servicing of industrial platforms, an activity that has been in

demand for over 50 years.

Today is a historic moment for our community." Melchior also said that a further six units including platforms and drilling vessels are expected there shortly. In mid-December,

the arrival of a floating dock belonging to the Palumbo shipyard, a 300 metre long and 78 metre wide ocean giant, is expected.

With the opening of the port, the ugly drilling rigs currently

located off the coast of Santa Cruz will perhaps disappear. At the same time, the new port is creating more jobs for the people of Granadilla and surroundings. An investment of €145,584,590.70 was made for the construction, of which the European Cohesion Fund contributed €67 million. At the moment, work is underway on an extension of the second part of the Ribera pier. It consists of a 160-metre long jetty, which is to be completed in seven months. A further €7 million will be invested in this project.

The Ports Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife now manages six ports in the province, which are Santa Cruz, Granadilla de Abona, Los Cristianos, San Sebastián de La Gomera, Santa Cruz de La Palma and n La Estaca in El Hierro.

Children and young people often have many desires.

For some, however, it’s more than just a wish. For them, a wish, a spark of hope, can help them to overcome a difficult situation. Loro Parque has been working with the Make a Wish Spain Foundation for 15 years. It enables seriously ill children to be given something that distracts them from everyday life. When a child is seriously ill, this is a rotten situation not only for the young patients, but also for their families. That's why they try to fulfil wishes. The General Director Oriol Alsina explains, "Thinking of this and the anticipation distract them from therapies, injections and everyday hospital routines. For some there is nothing more wonderful than seeing their favourite animals up close." This definitely applies to 14-year-old Lilou from Barcelona, who has just left behind a serious form of leukaemia and wanted to see her favourite animals, the white tiger and red panda. On November 20 she celebrated

animals, giraffes, parrots, sea lions and tigers. During the last 15 years, 37 boys and girls have come to the famous, award-winning zoo.

Pedro Chumillas Zurilla, a member of the foundation said that: "At Loro Parque we respect the importance of avoiding direct contact between humans and animals.

However, we are happy to be able to give these young people something by being able to visit and be close to their favourite animal. We hope Lilou will return home full of energy, hope and health. A serious illness afflicts every member of the family and it makes a child mature faster.

Every year, around 85 Spanish children are able to see their heart's desire come true with the Make a Wish Spain Foundation. And there are young patients from the USA or other parts of Europe where the Foundation is active. For

Lilou, her big dream has come true and even more. The president of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Keissling, personally invited the young teenager to the opening of the Poema del Mar in Las Palmas. Speaking of his own life, he explained, "It’s always important that children experience an animal up close. This is the task of a modern zoo. It's just not like seeing an animal on the screen. My love for the animals awoke when my grandfather once took me with him and I was allowed to touch an n elephant’s trunk."

In addition, we must not forget that one per cent of breast cancer victims are men.

It’s a grand day out, with entertainment at the start whilst people are registering and at the end when the final count-up and the raffle for some truly amazing prizes takes place – a real feelgood occasion for all the family, and for a great cause. Paralympic athlete motivates the world

Gema conquers Mt. Teide After twelve strenuous days, Gema Hassen-Bey, who started an ascent of Mount Teide on October 31, managed to overcome the 3,000 metre barrier on Sunday November 12, making her the first Paralympic athlete in the world to achieve this using only the power of her arms.

Gema covered the last few metres using a small wheeled stretcher that slides along stairs like rails, pulled by her arms. Earlier in the day, she also used a handbike and a wheelchair for climbing.

Born in Madrid in 1967, Gema Hassen-Bey is known for being a Paralympic fencing medallist in sword and foil, and one of the few elite athletes to have participated in five consecutive Paralympic Games: Atlanta, Barcelona, Sydney, Athens and Beijing. Gemma is also a journalist, creator and presenter of the Spanish tve2 programme

El mundo se mueve contigo (the world moves with you), an emotional coach, actress, singer, dancer, and a nature and genetic traveller. Above all, she is a communicator who lives without limits, travelling with her wheelchair around the world. She founded the Bey Proaction project, an artistic

collective with the clear conviction that people with different abilities can contribute a lot to society through artistic and sports disciplines. Her motto for life is "If you move, the world moves with you".

This amazing woman who transmits so much energy, sense of humour and emotion, believes that anything is possible. Gema and her helpers stayed at the Baobab Suites in Costa Adeje for a day before her Mount Teide climb, and also for four days afterwards, and was able to continue her physical preparation at the Activate Sports Club.

Shortly after conquering Teide, and armed with her Paralympic sword, she gave a motivational talk at the Activate Club, the proceeds of which were donated to the Canarian Walk for Life Foundation. The Teide project was an idea which she had when she came out of hospital a year ago. This lady is not only bound to a wheelchair, but she has also had surgery for breast cancer. At that time

This project formed part of the charity project Kilimanjaro via the Canaries, so needless to say, Gema's next big challenge will be Mount Kilimanjaro.

Even though it is higher than Teide, it should be less problematic for her as its surface is smoother with fewer rocks. As always, Gema will be seeking sponsors and donations. The Drag Queen Gala from the International Carnival in Los Cristianos was recently shown in all its splendour in Asturias, northern Spain, within the framework of the XIV Annual Photographic Encounters of Gijón, at the exhibition ‘Live your dreams, share your passions’ by the photojournalist Mercedes Menéndez.

A lover of this carnival gala, Menéndez has tried to condense, in 30 images, three years of a gala that has become one of the most popular events in the south of Tenerife.

The exhibition, which will travel to Tenerife in 2018, was displayed at the Centro Municipal de la Arena de Gijón during November.

Mercedes Menéndez, who inaugurated the exhibition on November 10, explained a selection of works that delve into, “that magical universe of transformation that always has a double meaning, a hidden moral, a sniff of confidence. An exaggerated femininity and false eyelashes on the exterior hide human beings who mix the masculine with the feminine. In the Drag world, in his back room, everything gets mixed up and confused. From the shadows, the lights come on and the show begins, but in the silence of the dressing room, that fragility appears, that humanity that I have tried to capture with my camera.”

The stars of this exhibition are the main drags from the south of Tenerife and the other islands, such as Aurum, Sethlas, Acrux and Miss Caelum, the latter with a prominent role in Menéndez’s photographic selection, as one of his tattoos gives the display its name. With a visual tour that is divided into sections and that took three years of work, the author has captured the evolution, physical and emotional, that takes place from the transformation to the performance.

The Los Cristianos Carnival’s Drag Queen Gala is not a contest, but an opportunity for consecrated drags and transformers, and also for guests who are beginning their careers, to show their creativity to thousands of people of many nationalities. Last March, it was once again one of the most popular shows and filled the Bulevar Chajofe with over 3,000 people.

The International Carnival of Los Cristianos 2018 will be held from March 1 to 12 and will have as its central theme the world of pirates, corsairs and buccaneers, a fiesta that in the 2017 edition brought together over 30,000 people for the procession alone. Musical premiere in Spanish

Sunset boulevard

Following on from the great successes of the musicals Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, and in agreement with the production company The Really Useful Group Ltd., the Adán Martín Auditorium in Santa Cruz will be raising the curtain for Sunset Boulevard this Christmas.

The show is based on the film of the same name, shot by Billy Wilder in Los Angeles in 1950 and is premiering as a Spanish musical. The director is Jaime Azpilicueta, who has already staged several Carnival Queen Galas in Santa Cruz.

The well known musicals artist and popular singer Paloma San Basilio plays the leading role of the central figure, the forgotten diva Norma Desmond. Norma is a former silent movie star who lives in seclusion in her villa in Los Angeles.

Her devoted servant Max is her only companion until the unemployed screenwriter Joe Gillis is drawn into her fantasy world. The aging diva hunts him down for herself and persuades him to write a script for her. Norma is certain that she’s about to make a big comeback. She manipulates the young artist and the people in her own, and his, environment. The protagonists become more and more entangled in their relationships until Joe Gillis is shot dead by Norma in her swimming pool. When the journalists arrive, she believes that the shooting of her new film Salomé will begin. As part of this delusion she walks down the stairs of her villa and presents herself in her ‘new role’.

Having been the singer with the UK Players in the eighties myself (Ray), I had the pleasure of working with Steve Levine who was Boy George’s record producer as well as mine and ended up meeting and recording with Boy George at Red Bus studios in London.

So as this article is about the Islands’ number one tribute

to the man himself, I thought it would be interesting to find out more about Keith George and his homage to our mutual friend!

His bookings diary is bursting with performance dates including cruises, Pontins, and casinos and clubs all over the world.

Gran Canaria

Where there’s muck...

A pioneering study of converting sewage sludge into compost being carried out in Gran Canaria could become the frame of reference for the whole country.

Results so far have been very positive and they are very much pioneers in the field as there are no published studies on similar experiments on the scale proposed. In mid November, representatives of the island council, Canarian Farmers’ organisations and the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University announced the results of the second phase of this study which began a year ago with financing of €120,000. The funding came from the Gran Canaria Cabildo which was easily persuaded to part with the cash due to the magnificent results of the first phase. If the third and final stage has equally positive results, they will then instigate a study into the industrialisation of the process.

All parties involved are enthusiastic about the experiment as it will produce enormous benefits, both financially and environmentally. The island currently imports 12,000

tons of fertiliser per year at a price of seven million euros, using 450,000 containers, which need port management – more costs. At present the sludge is dumped in

Ecoparks in Gran Canaria and the treatment of that costs four million euros. The study has also shown that it is a better medium for retaining water. With mineral fer-

tiliser 40 per cent of water is lost, with the organic substitute barely three per cent, so there will be a massive saving for the farmers in irrigation costs as well as alleviating the effects of drought in the island. As an example, at the moment it costs €6,600 a year to irrigate one hectare of banana plantation, using the new compost that bill will be reduced to €4,200.

Use could be extended to both private and public gardens, nurseries and forest areas and for recuperation of areas of eroded soil. The results so far have shown that the final plants and produce obtained are as big as or bigger than those attained with mineral fertilisers, with the additional benefit that there are lower levels of both nitrite and nitrate contamination.

The Director of the project Doctor Irene Dupuis said this is a textbook example of circular economy, since to obtain

the compost the sludge has to be mixed with plant debris to provide the necessary carbon. This would mean a use for the excess dried vegetation that fills the forest areas of industrialised countries and minimise the fire hazard where it’s reused. Tests are also being made in the use of recycled cardboard in the mixture.

Compost usually doesn’t give positive results in seed beds, however this stuff has in all the tests so far except tomatoes. In all the species so far tested in plantlets the produce has been as large as or larger than before and the same applies to the nursery plants so far included in the research.

The next phase will focus on the wine-growing areas and thus hopefully on to industrialisation and commercialisation.

The project falls within the framework of the Gran Canaria Cabildo's policy to advance towards a green, friendly and n sustainable ecoisla.

Your rights as a European resident in Spain - Part 2

Where is my residence?

By Dr. Rainer Fuchs Your legal residence affects your rights and obligations in the area of health and pensions, but is also important in questions of tax law and inheritance. It doesn’t matter whether you have registered residence status. Formal residence is one of many criteria used to determine where you live your life.

Under the European Regulation 883/2004, your rights and obligations as an EU citizen are defined in the fields of pensions, health and nursing care in Spain. They make a distinction between the ‘place of residence’ i.e. your habitual residence and ‘residence’ as a temporary place to stay. These terms are rather confusing. In the various double taxation agreements with Spain, tax law speaks a little more clearly of the place where the interests of your life are centred. In social law, international inheritance law and tax law, it’s not the place where you’re registered that matters, but the place of residence in which you have the centre of your life's interests - your very own personal focus of life.

A distinction must be made between this and the question of where you are registered and

The norm is that the main focus of your life is where you spend more than half of the year - more than 183 days each year.

what obligations under reporting law you have in your country of origin and in Spain. By registering or deregistering in the two countries, you are basically not saying anything about your place of residence, but only about where you have a home that you can use in its entirety or temporarily.

Grey area: a home in both countries According to the case-law of the European Court of Justice, it is necessary to deter-

mine where the centre of your life lies, taking into account: the family situation, the reasons for the move, the duration of the residence and other circumstances (Case C-90/97).

Most residents will live in their home country, at least temporarily. In particular, when there is a dwelling there as well as in Spain, there is a grey area in which it is not always possible to determine clearly where the centre of life lies, because the question of where a person has the centre

of his or her life’s interests is a very individual matter. This uncertainty is often more or less tolerated by the authorities of both states. Therefore, you can influence the decision within certain limits.

If you want absolute clarity in cases of doubt, this can only be achieved by an agreement with the competent authorities of both countries, i.e. in particular with the health services or social security and with the tax office. These bodies will then clarify matters with their Spanish partners.

Otherwise, there are only indications for the decision as to where the centre of life lies. Here are the most important clues: The duration and continuity of your stay in Spain. Here, the rule from the double taxation agreement with Spain applies: After this period, it is usually during a stay in Spain of more than 183 days which decides the centre of life. That's just a rule, so theoretically, you can try claiming the opposite. However, the evidence to the contrary will be difficult.

If Spain is your tax domicile, this also applies to all other areas, especially social security.

Family relations and personal ties to Spain and the Spanish people are of great importance.

Regular trips to your home country to help someone ill or

care for someone in need, near relatives etc. could give you a claim for your residence being in your home country, even if you live more than 183 days a year in Spain.

Regular volunteer work and commitment in one or the other country with frequent trips there could also be decisive in a claim for you having your roots there.

The housing situation: If you hold property in Spain it’s more probable that you have your centre of life there, a long-term lease also counts. On the contrary, a current rental contract or a home ownership/house in your country of origin will give you a claim for having your centre of life there.

If you have both, other clues are needed. According to these criteria, the authorities decide whether you have transferred your residence to Spain in the legal sense, i.e. whether you are resident in Spain and have your place of residence there.

First of all, it’s important to remember that maintenance is defined as the amount needed to include all that is essential for a person's sustenance, housing, clothing, medical care and education and instruction.

With regard to the obligation, amount and method of payment of maintenance, it can be mutually agreed by the spouses under their separation agreement, or imposed by the sentence that is issued in the legal procedures of separation or contentious divorce.

There is a widespread belief, with respect to the offspring of divorced or separated parents that when the children come of age, the obligation to pay maintenance automatically ends and consequently, the non-custodial parent is no longer required to pay, simply because the son or daughter is

eighteen years of age, but this is not the case.

In this respect, and always taking into account the circumstances of each particular case, if the children, even though they have reached the age of majority, are still in training/ education and have no income enabling them to lead an independent life, they will be entitled to a maintenance pension.

On the other hand, if it’s shown that they are old enough to have completed their studies and have not done so due to laziness or lack of application, and that they don’t intend to enter the labour market either, then the maintenance can be stopped. Think, for example, of the typical case of a 26 or 27 year old son who hasn’t finished his studies, or has abandoned them, and who neither works nor has the intention of doing so.

In these cases, given that the circumstances which were taken into account in order to set the maintenance have changed, what we must do is to put ourselves in the hands of a lawyer to initiate a procedure for amendment measures, and thus the judge will review what is laid down in the separation or divorce judgment. Only in this way can we request that the payment be cancelled, or if that is denied, have a time limit set during which the responsibility to pay maintenance will continue but, once that period of time expires, the obligation will end.

How will UK inheritance tax affect your family?

Liability to UK inheritance tax is based on domicile, not residence.

If you are a UK domicile, or are deemed domiciled under HM Revenue & Customs rules, your worldwide estate above the thresholds is liable to tax at 40 per cent. Assets in the UK are liable regardless of domicile.

You can live in the Canary Islands for many years and remain a UK domicile. It is however possible to adopt a domicile of choice in Spain or elsewhere if you cut ties to the UK. The rules are complex so you need specialist advice if you wish to protect your heirs from this tax.

There are now two allowances for inheritance tax: Standard nil-rate band – The tax-free threshold is currently £325,000. It should rise each year in line with inflation, but it has been frozen for a number

of years. When this allowance is not used, or only partly used, you can transfer the balance to your spouse/civil partner.

Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB) – This new ‘family home allowance’ came into effect in April 2017. It’s being introduced gradually, so that it is £100,000 this tax year, rising by £25,000 each year until £175,000 in 2020/21 (after which it will rise in line with inflation). This allowance is also transferable, so this makes a total potential threshold for a couple of £1 million by 2020.

You can claim the family home allowance on a property outside the UK, provided it is your main home. Local inheritance tax may still apply.

Note, however, that there are limitations on the Residential Nil Rate Band: • It only applies to property (a family home) • You need to have lived in it at some stage • The property must be inherited by descendants

The TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes in Santa Cruz holds a range of exhibitions all year round, with free entrance for all members of the public.

As well as a number of permanent collections, there is always a thrilling array of visiting shows, including the current La ciudad sumergida (The sunken city) by Aube Elléouët-Breton.

The French artist, born in Paris in 1935, is the daughter of poet and writer André Breton, best known as being ‘the founder of Surrealism’. A talented jeweller amongst other aspects, Elléouët-Breton’s diverse range of artistic styles and techniques has ensured her a dedicated following throughout her life.

The exhibition at the TEA is a collection of more than 500 of her collages, each of them individual and showing a huge imagination and impressive appreciation of form and juxtaposition.

It’s just over 80 years since her famous father and artist mother Jaqueline Lamba last appeared on the island, after spending four visits here between 1932 and 1936.

Fabulous Christmas fairs Two wonderful events to get you into the festive mood will take place at the start of December in Adeje.

Kicking the fun off is the Las Torres Christmas Fair that is programmed for December 1 to 3. A range of stalls will offer plenty of opportunities to purchase perfect gifts for friends and family as well as all you need for the coming season, and there will also be entertainment for all ages, with gastronomic delights, children’s activities, musical performances and much more.

The fair will be held in the car park of the Adeje School of Music, Las Torres, between 5pm and 10pm on December 1, and 10am and 10pm on the other two days. Visitors are also invited to enjoy a free tasting of chocolate and Christmas treats

After many years on the scene, Tenerife band Sinharley is currently promoting their debut full album called Curvas Peligrosas (Dangerous curves). The 10 songs, all in Spanish, are the culmination of work since the group’s formation in 2011.

Ever rising in popularity, one of the band’s latest successes is reaching the finals of this year’s Hard Rock Rising competition, being the group that received the most internet votes.

Animal charities’ round up K9 Good news for Morgan Morgan arrived at the kennels in a terrible state a few months ago.

She had a severe flea allergy, leaving her partially bald, her skin was covered in the results of the irritation, with painful lesions and she was heartworm positive.

Once her treatments started to take effect we really saw a change in her behaviour.

She came out of her shell and quickly stole everyone’s hearts, and eventually made a full recovery.

After spending time in a foster home, K9 recently found a forever home for her in Holland with the help of PodencoWorld.

At 12 years of age, although she is an old dear, she deserves to live out her days in a loving home. We are so happy for her.

The lovely kitten Ruby was found with her brother only a few hours old, very cold and hungry and needing a lot of intensive care and love.

Canarian farmers harvest an extensive range of crops, which can be seen growing in the typical stepped-terrain farms around the Islands. Products range from tropical fruits, such as mangoes, to worldwide staples like lentils, potatoes and onions.

According to the agricultural group COAG-Canarias, prices of fresh fruits and vegetables differ greatly between the amount the farmers receive and the sale

price in the supermarkets. For instance, towards the end of last year, small marrows, which the farmers were paid just €0.07/kilo for, retailed at €0.84, and leeks sold at €0.36 were passed onto the consumer for around €2.23 a kilo. Many of the prices don’t even seem to cover the cost of production - and this is when subsidies became necessary to keep farms from disappearing, which, like the hiked prices, also come out of our pockets.

Enter the farmers markets, where the grower can sell directly to the customer without an intermediary. They are dotted all over the Islands,

with at least one in almost every town. They allow customers to purchase fresher, higher quality produce at cheaper prices, and the farmers receive a fair payment for their efforts. This enables them to maintain or raise the standard of their crops and uphold productivity levels – it’s a win-win situation.

In these markets you will be sure to see a variety of seasonal products, as well as some local home-made delicacies such as preserves, honeys and Canarian goat’s cheese. A selection of meats and fish can also be found among the stalls, along with an assortment of cakes, pastries and biscuits.

Buy locally, eat healthily, pay fairly – this is one way we can all help each other.

The absolute star guest and idol of many of the young dancers was the prima ballerina Yulia Makhalina.

World class wheelchair tennis in the Canaries Guía de Isora is to host the first Autonomy Tenerife Open, attracting top wheelchair tennis athletes from all over the world.

The champions will be decided on Saturday December 9 and Sunday December 10 on the tennis courts at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama near Playa San Juan.

From Thursday December 7 to Sunday December 10, the very first international wheelchair tennis tournament in the history of the Canary Islands will be held in Guía de Isora.

Athletes of more than 10 nationalities will compete for the €5,000 prize money and important points in the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour. With over a thousand athletes in the world ranking, wheelchair tennis is one of the best developed adapted sports of these days. This fast and dynamic sport follows the same rules as able bodied tennis except the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces before they must hit the ball.

This is mainly down to the style of play and the constant tinkering with the formation rather than results. The team currently sits in 10th position in the league table and are only three points from the play-off zone, so hardly a disaster from that point of view. In fact, the blanquiazules have exactly the same record as this time last season after 16 matches, won five, drawn seven and lost four. From there on in they hit top form and finished the season in 4th position. One difference this time is that Tenerife have scored more goals and that is largely down to Italian striker Samuele Longo who has been a
