Gridlocked motorways
Wild weather The tail end of Storm Emma crossed the archipelago at the end of February, causing some chaos, but it also brought very much longed-for rain. In the southern parts of the two largest islands, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the precious water was a great blessing. However, on the islands of Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria, over 500 storm-related incidents were reported to the 112 emergency line. The strongest gusts of wind, at 152 kilometres per hour, were registered in Vallehermosa on La Gomera and the wind peaked at 135 kilometres per hour in the area of the Izaña observatory post on Tenerife. On La Palma, the maximum speed hit 124 kilometres per hour and, amongst other damage, it was enough to rip up a McDonalds billboard near the port and send it several hundred metres over the main road.

Some of the heaviest waves also hit the coast of Lanzarote
Roads in the Canary Islands are overcrowded, particularly around the metropolitan areas of both Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Tenerife’s La Laguna and Santa Cruz, especially during the rush hours all regular travellers have suffered the consequences. The motorway and access roads to Los Cristianos and Playa de Las
Américas are also regularly congested. This is a stressful situation that drivers, the police, the traffic authorities and the emergency services have to cope with. Those who travel to work from Puerto de La Cruz to Santa Cruz, for example, usually need to allow up to one hour for the journey instead of around 25 minutes
which the mileage would normally require. In Tenerife, there are 776,000 vehicles on the roads for a population of about 1,004,000. Traffic Police Chief Alfonso Gálvez exclaimed “That’s barbaric”. In the south, in the Los Cristianos area alone, the number of vehicles on the roads increased last
year by about 9,000. This is partly due to the end of the crisis and, as a result, more individual families buying more cars, and also to the ongoing tourism boom and the increase in rental car fleets to meet the demand. As a result, the roads are hopelessly congested. Continued on page two

Rush hour traffic accidents are frequent, worsening the gridlocks
gested modifying the Padre Anchieta motorway exit. The proposal includes alternative arrangements for pedestrians and the possible use of traffic lights to regulate the flow. Guardia Civil's traffic police chief Alfonso Gálvez proposes the introduction of a 'Bus Vao', (a lane for high occupation vehicles) based on the model used in Madrid and Barcelona. These are roads that are usually found at the entry and exit to large cities and can be driven on in one direction or the other, depending on the traffic volume. They are usually reserved for buses, taxis, low-emission cars and vehicles in which at least one passenger is travelling with the driver. They can speed up the flow of traffic and are flexible. This variant could provide relief at focal points along the TF-1 and TF-5 and in Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands Minister for Public Works, Pablo Rodríguez, believes that an improvement to the entry and exit lanes for the northern motorway would
bring relief. Island President Carlos Alonso is focusing on the expansion of public transport and its use. He explained, "In the long term, public bus transport is the most sustainable solution and consumes the least energy and space per person."
Wherever you drive, there is a crash The number of road deaths in Spain declined over a 14 year period, but unfortunately the figures have increased again during the last two years. In the Canary Islands, the number of road deaths increased from 38 in 2016 to 44 in 2017 according to Pablo Calvo, Santa Cruz’s Provincial Traffic Direc-

tor, who summarised the main causes of accidents: Number one is a lack of attention on the part of the driver, usually these days in connection with a mobile phone. Instead of looking at the road, drivers look at the screen, and it only takes a few seconds’ inattention for an accident to happen. Other reasons include failing to maintain a safe stopping distance between vehicles, non-observance of the right of way rules at crossroads and access roads, excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. As a countermeasure, this year the police are focusing on more information campaigns, more road checks and traffic monitoring n by means of drones.

According to the TomTomIndex 2016, Las Palmas ranks third in Spain in terms of traffic chaos, behind the leaders Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. On average, driving time on the roads takes 27 per cent longer than with normal traffic flow. At peak times in the morning and in the evening, this figure is as high as 38 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. In Gran Canaria, the highest density is found on the southern and western access roads, as well as in the urban area around the port and Santa Catalina. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is seventh in the ranking, but the differences between them are not that great. On average, road users need a quarter of the journey time more than with normal traffic levels. The peak values in the morning and in the evening coincide with Las Palmas. The highest risk of congestion exists between La Laguna and Santa Cruz. Around 51,433 vehicles were recorded every morning in the area of the Padre Anchieta exit on the TF-5 at La Laguna. The balance sheet for 2017, which has not yet been published, is likely to be even worse. The smallest of accidents leaves the system hopelessly gridlocked. Opinions about which measures are most effective in reducing traffic congestion are multifaceted. A total of two billion euros are to be invested in the Canary Islands' roads over the next four years. Guillermo Díaz Guerra, a member of the Canary Islands Government in Santa Cruz, has sug-

Fortunately, no one was injured. At the port of Tazacorte, waves of up to seven metres high rolled towards the coast and flooded the adjacent area. Flight and ferry cancellations were widespread in the last two days of the month. In La Palma, it hit 210 holidaymakers, mainly from Germany and Great Britain, particularly hard as their flights were cancelled and they spent the night as guests at the military barracks. Unusual hosts, but a warm solution with good food until the following day. All the islands suffered electrical and communications breakdowns, landslides and floods, but fortunately there was only material damage. For the first time in many years, Tenerife was completely isolated as both airports had to close and many ferry services were cancelled. In some places, coastal and mountain roads were closed for safety reasons, and branches, street signs, lanterns and even a statue broke or overturned in many areas. In Barranco Seco in the Teno Mountains, a lost tourist had to be retrieved by fire fighters, and in the port of Santa Cruz, a container ship breaking off a platform sprung a leak, but the fire brigade pumped out the water. The situation in the port of Fuerteventura was even more dangerous. There, heavy seas caused several accidents. Four boats without berths were stranded at the port ramps. One of them was a barge 60 metres long with 40,000 litres of fuel on board. They were able to anchor it to the seabed and thankfully it held tight. Another barge with 50,000 litres of fuel sank within the harbour, but also remained attached safely to the seabed and no oil escaped. The other two were also anchored and the danger of leaking fuel was averted. As soon as the sea calmed down, all fuel was pumped out as a precaution and one sunken barge was refloated. n

In Memoriam
David John Hume A long time resident of Tenerife, Dave sadly passed away on March 2, 2018. He knew so many people and everyone loved his generous nature and wicked sense of humour. Over the last couple of years he had been Mr Quizmaster - an evening enjoyed by everyone. He was a devoted Gunner and a keen golfer. A brilliantly funny and all round lovely guy who will be missed by many, especially his wife Jenny and son Ross. n R.I.P Dave.

American-Spanish police cooperation The National Police have arrested seven people in Spain for owning and sharing pornographic images and videos of children, on the basis of information received from the American Homeland Security Investigations Force. One of the arrests was made in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. The 32-year-old man had previously been convicted for similar offences and had been banned from working with children for five years. He apparently stated that he’d specifically set up an account on social networks for the exchange of child pornographic material, and that he simply could not resist his impulses. In addition, three people were detained in Andalusia, including a 25-year-old from Almería who was caught while he was deleting child pornography files he had stored on his computer. He evidently
explained that he had collected points by downloading photos and videos, which he could have exchanged for cash in the future. In Granada, a man with numerous convictions for robbery, illegal possession of weapons, and child pornography was also among those arrested. In Seville, a 19-yearold was part of the network. He was said to be a busy supplier of new material and had three hidden archives where he collected photos of three minors. As it turned out, two of those depicted were his stepfather's children. Rapid intervention by the police prevented the children of his mother's new partner from becoming possible victims. The suspect apparently admitted to being very sexually attracted to them. In Madrid, a Bolivian was detained who downloaded child pornographic material from various platforms
Some of the detainees stated that they simply could not resist their instincts, while others used the materials to earn money
and then distributed them in relevant circles via video streaming. Also residing in Madrid was a 53-year-old man who had a very large collection of sex videos of minors from abroad. Potential victims are now being located through further international police cooperation. Particularly striking is a 20-yearold from Madrid, who is also one of those in detention. He
had saved hundreds of files in a cloud because his own computers did not have the capacity for the enormous amount of material. Photos and videos of very young children subjected to degrading sexual practices were found on his computer. In recent months, it seems that the young man had been looking for even more extreme material on n the Darknet.

Giggles from the Google world
You can smirk!
Apparently, Canarians are... Argentines with Down’s Syndrome This may sound strange at first, but you'll be amazed at what appears when you ask about the characteristics of the Canarians in a Google search. First of all, Canarian people are supposedly African, Spanish and intelligent, but also, and this is the curiosity, Argentines
with Down's syndrome. This result is due to the fact that many Canarian people apparently 'googled' for this search parameter. There is no specific property for Tinerfeños, Palmeros, Herreños, Gomeros, Majoreros, Canarios, or Conejeros, as the inhabitants of the individual islands are called. Only with the Gomeros still comes the belief that they are
"de mala suerte", that is, they supposedly bring bad luck. In this case, however, we are talking about a plant, a kind of rubber tree, which is also called Gomero. The Blog Strambotic has compiled a map of Spain by these search terms and categorised them by the searches that residents use. According to this, Madrilenians (from Madrid)
are, for example, cats, arrogant and cheeky. The inhabitants of the neighbouring Castilla-La Mancha region are simply lazy. The people of southern Spain, on the other hand, are described as gypsies, good people and the most beautiful, while their neighbours from Murcia are described as bad ones, lovable but stupid. Aragon is home to beautiful people, the biggest and also the most stubborn. The Mallorcans are described as closed, the Valencians as false and the Catalans are in football terms, negative. By the way, if you want to play for fun, the Germans are to blame for everything, and they are the most stupid people. The Bavarians are arrogant, different and really funny, while the Hessians are all criminals and stubborn. The Saxons are considered bright and always present. Londoners are said to be unfriendly, selfish and boring, the Scots are tough and the Irish are supposedly ugly, inaccessible and masculine. Of course, all this can only be seen as a joke, just like that fact that cats in Spain n only have seven lives!

Gran Canaria serial rapist arrested
On the basis of the evidence seized at the suspect’s house, the police are assuming there may be other victims
A 66-year-old man from Telde was recently arrested by the National Police after being accused of rape by a 38-yearold female employee. The pair had met via an internet platform where the
apparent victim had placed an advertisement stating she was looking for work. The accused, from the San Juan neighbourhood, is said to have offered her a job as a domestic helper, with duties including
cleaning, cooking and shopping. In return, she stated that they agreed on a monthly salary of €1,000. However, the complainant says that on the first day of starting work, the man first
showered her with extravagant compliments, then when she did not react, he began to touch her, and eventually raped her. The victim turned to the National Police Unit for Women and Families in Telde for support. A search of the suspect’s apartment was ordered, and evidence of further possible victims was found. The investigation also revealed that the male had a previous criminal record for sexual harassment and abuse of nine women. His hunting pattern appears to have always been the same, luring women with the prospect of a job in the home. The police unit has set up a direct line for anyone who may also have been abused by the man and not reported it to date. The number to call is n 928 704 137.
No ugly duckling
A black swan cygnet The human and animal Loro Parque family were recently celebrating another new birth, this time at the Lago Thai. The parents were a pair of black swans, whose first young hatched out of one of three eggs. Black swans usually breed during the rainy season, which in Tenerife is not so frequent, of course, but which has certainly arrived this year. These swans build their nests in the form of floating islands by artfully creating a nest made from aquatic plants. The nest islands can reach up to two metres in diameter and one metre in height. The fledgling care and rearing, which lasts another nine months after hatching, is carried out by the father and mother alike, on a fairly equal basis. These pretty and elegant animals with shiny black plumage and red beaks, are not migratory, they feed only on plants, and live as do other swans, with just one partner for life. The cygnet is squeaky and happy and n already swims bravely next to his parents.

Hikers stranded A group of hikers will probably never forget the night they spent in a cave at the foot of the Masca Ravine. Despite the bad weather warning, the seven young Germans and a Slovenian had left on the last Sunday in February to hike through the Barranco de Masca. They later stated, they did not know that a bad weather system bringing heavy rain was approaching the archipelago. On their way down to the coast, they were literally caught out, cold and wet, and it got worse. Arriving at the foot of the Barranco, no boat was available to take them to Los Gigantes due to the high waves. They couldn't walk back either due to flooding. A shepherd living in the area expressly warned them of the great danger. He said, "I can't understand why they didn't turn back when it started raining. They didn't know the danger they were in." He made sure that the hikers had at least a roof over their heads in a cave and gave them provisions. They stayed overnight until the weather calmed down the following morning

and they could be taken back to Los Gigantes on an excursion boat. A fireman explained, "They were young people who could cope with a night without sleep. Fortunately nobody
was injured in this case." The rescue operation involved the fire brigade from San Miguel de Abona, the voluntary fire brigade from Santiago del Teide and the Guardia Civil.
The Masca Ravine is impressive, but not always free of risks
All those involved were happy when the rescue operation was successfully completed. The Tenerife Island Council, however, had to decide whether the
hiking group should be fined for imprudence. The hiking group will now be asked to pay for their rescue. They will not have to pay an additional
fine, but the emergency services costs must be covered. The Island security councillor, Javier RodrĂguez Medina explained, "There were a total of ten members of various fire brigades, Guardia Civil officers and Red Cross staff, who were on duty to rescue them and who put their own lives in danger because of the bad meteorological conditions. A rescue was not possible on the Sunday evening. Since nobody was injured and the group could spend an uncomfortable but safe night in a cave, the mission was completed on Monday morning. All in all, this resulted in costs of â‚Ź2,114, which we are now demanding from the victims". Meanwhile, the Island Council announced that it would invest one million euros this year to secure the Barranco. The aim is to defuse the most dangerous points, improve pathways and establish three check points. The improvement work will take about six months. The project will be put out to tender immediately n on completion.

the unemployed and people in difficult situations, with a view to turning them into qualified workers. During a visit to Femete, the island’s president Carlos Alonso explained, "We
are trying to qualify people for professions that cover niches which offer future prospects." Demand in recent years has shown that this industry meets these requirements. The Provincial Association of Ship Repair and Construction Companies (Atiren Connavalte) has doubled its workforce over the last three years. In December 2014 there were 240 people working in the sector, compared with 567 in April 2017. Additionally, the new shipyard at the Santa Cruz port is expected to create around 800 jobs. Many positions cannot yet be filled from within the company, so specialists from outside the organisation will have to be called in. This should change with the training within the Canarian population. The sector offers wellpaid, secure jobs and women are also expressly asked to conquer this normally male domain for themselves. Applicants with prior education in electronic and mechanical professions can shorten the training period. The skills taught include certain welding and painting techniques for work on boats and platforms, safety and prevention of occupational hazards, international certificates and basic English skills, which are essential for n port workers.
Freshwater rays bred at Loro Parque
Eye-catching Leopold Stingrays In a first for Tenerife’s Loro Parque, young Potamotrygon Leopoldi, also called Leopolds or black devil’s rays, have been born. At present, the animals are still in isolation to ensure their optimal growth, though even at this early stage they can choose their favourite food. They are fed with worms, small crustaceans and various fish snacks. After the first weeks of life, a special and varied nutritional programme will be developed for them. The young rays are currently healthy and developing well. Normally they live in the Rio Xingu in Brazil and feed on freshwater snails and crabs which they find in the rocky subsoil. In its natural habitat, this species of ray is threatened by massive human intervention, and the currently stable population could quickly be decimated. Another human threat arises from the sheer beauty of the animal, especially young specimens which are in danger of being caught as ornamental fish for aquariums and sold commercially. Sometimes, they are hunted for fear of the possible injuries they could cause. Thanks to the success of these youngsters at Loro Parque, more information about the lifestyle of their species will be collected. The more that is known, the better the animals can be protected and cared for. Preserving biodiversity in nature is an important scientific starting point to which the Loro Parque Foundation Elegant and colourful river dwellers n the freshwater ray Potamotrygon Leopoldi is committed.

Slightly more than 32 per cent opted for a holiday home or apartment, a rise of only one per cent. The latest evaluation of tourism statistics by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (Istac) shows that the number of holidaymakers who opted for all-inclusive packages last year remained stable compared to the previous 12-month period, increasing by only one point, to 31 per cent of the total holiday volume. The Germans are the group of holidaymakers who most often make use of this type of offer. Four out of ten tourists from Germany have already paid for their hotel, food, drinks and transfers before the start of their trip. On the other hand, the Spanish holidaymaker is the one who rarely chooses this option, with only about 20 per cent opting for allinclusive packages. This puts the Spaniards in third place behind the Irish and the Swiss when it comes to spending the holiday budget on site.

Vandalism closes Los Realejos park The mayor of Los Realejos, Manuel Domínguez, announced the closure of the area’s San Agustín park in February, citing persistent vandalism as the reason. In recent years, destructive actions have taken place continually, especially at night, causing considerable damage to playground equipment, street lamps, urban furniture and bins, which had to be replaced and/ or repaired repeatedly. In addition, there were remnants of street parties and other nocturnal activities in the park, as well as domestic animal excrement, which is not only unsightly, but also a health risk to children. Domínguez explained, “We have tried to combat the problem For reasons of cleanliness and safety, the by working together park will be closed at night with local residents. Unfortunately, however, these efforts have not yielded the desired results.” Even regular police presence proved no use, so he has been forced to take more drastic measures. The park has been fenced in, damaged parts have been repaired and in the future it will only be open during the day and at fixed times. The opening day and hours are expected to coincide with that of the Rafael Yanes Art Studio Hall which is located in the park. From Monday to Friday, while the hall is open, the park will also be open. Separate opening hours will be announced for weekends. n

found on Fuerteventura, where more than half (53 per cent) of visitors take advantage of the option. This is followed by Lanzarote with 34 per cent and Gran Canaria with 28 per cent. In Tenerife, 24 per cent of guests opt for this type of holiday, and in La Palma only 18 per cent.

Neglected dogs freed
The Guardia Civil environmental protection unit Seprona, recently found and liberated 19 severely neglected dogs from the Juan Grande area in Gran Canaria. The canines were being kept in cages and were in terrible condition. The corpses of five further dogs were also found, their bodies in boxes, a freezer and a bed. Cannibalism among the animals is suspected. Adding to the surrealism of the discovery, some of the dogs were dressed in children’s clothes. Apparently, they were supervised by a mentally handicapped woman, who was subsequently taken to a medical centre with the knowledge of the judge on duty. n

Whether you have just arrived on holiday or live here, it’s a fabulous time of year with celebrations hitting our streets in Los Cristianos from March 1. Last year, our international carnival was all about Las Vegas, but this year batten down the hatches, pirate ships have arrived on the streets of Los
Cristianos because this year it’s all about pirates, yes that’s right you sea-dogs, it’s a pirate theme with an expected 6,000 people watching and participating at scheduled events all over Los Cristianos for the full 12 days, until March 12. This town’s definitely the place to be, with music, vibrant colours, feathers, sequins, glitz, dancing and much more. Once again, Keddy’s Entertainment is proud to be sponsoring one of the biggest carnival groups in the south of Tenerife, under the director
Silvia Ferrera, the children’s group Playeritos consisting of 77 children from three to 16 years old. This carnival group has been dancing together since 1999 and their costume design this year is called Destellos de Estrellas (Shining Stars). Thanks FOR desalination plants
Animal welfare initiative
Saving the shearwater chicks In 1999, the Tenerife Island Council’s Environmental Protection Agency and La Tahonilla wildlife recovery centre launched a programme for the protection of the shearwater, a seabird which only comes ashore to breed. The critical time begins when young birds leave their nest in September or October. Due to the bright lighting in inhabited areas, especially in holiday resorts, they become nervous and disorientated. It is precisely this moment that makes the species vulnerable and which threatens its survival, as the chicks often end up on someone’s terrace or gardens. Last year, over 60 volunteers from various non-profit organisations took part in rescue operations. Also, thanks to information campaigns, residents who have found one of these young birds are now more often reporting their find to the police. The animals are collected and taken to the La Tahonilla wildlife recovery centre, where they can recuperate and be set free. Last year, 1,556 shearwater chicks gained their strength there before they made their second attempt to fly across the ocean, n this time under the supervision of their carers.
Last year, the Tenerife Island Council took over responsibility for the new seawater desalination plant at Fonsalía in Guía de Isora, with the aim of finally being able to provide a much needed further water source for the area. Thanks to its recent opening, as well as to the existing plant in Granadilla, the authorities have proudly pronounced that the water supply in the south of the island can now be guaranteed. The Fonsalía desalination plant will cover 80 per cent of the water needs of the boroughs of Santiago del Teide and Guía de Isora. The use of special pipes and pumping stations will push the supply up to altitudes of 400 metres. Island President Carlos Alonso called on the mayors of the individual boroughs to purchase as much water as possible from the two desalination plants, so the island’s water galleries can be used primarily to meet the needs of

This will be complemented by a two-chamber tank with a capacity of 1,300 cubic metres of water to guarantee supply to hotels and resorts

in the coastal areas of Santiago del Teide. Another tank, with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters, with the same twochamber system, is currently under construction in Alcalá in the borough of Guía de Isora. The Island Council is investing around €1.3 million in this project, which will be commissioned later this year.
Continuing to spend on desalination may be the only way forward for covering the Islands’ water needs in the future. Some areas are already suffering shortages due to the drought conditions we are currently undergoing. For instance, Vilaflor’s nocturnal water supply has been limited n for months.

Plenty of hard work went in to setting up The friendly, multilingual staff will always welcome you
The Los Abrigos Auction Room and Second-hand Store has updated its premises and is now situated in Las Chafiras. Incredibly, it is only two years since pharmacist Esther and hotel manager Anja took over the second-hand business in Los Abrigos, but it has proven so successful that it’s already time to make the move. “After just the first year it was clear that the size of the business did not meet demand and supply", stated Esther. So, the two sisters began looking around for larger rooms, and now the search has come to an end. “We are very lucky to have found these light and airy premises, we couldn't have done better", Anja enthused. But not everything went smoothly. When setting up the new business premises it was obvious they needed that extra touch. For instance, the pair wasn’t
happy with the untreated concrete floors as they didn’t provide a “feeling of well-being, at all”. So, what did that mean? The option of laying tiles turned out to be prohibitively expensive due to the sheer size of the shop, but a friend, painter Franz Fiedler, recommended they try painting the floor. So, it was everything out, grab some materials and off they went… A Feng-Shui expert holidaying on the island advised using curved lines and the colours red and green, so a path now leads through a sea of warm and inviting shades. Offering the possibility of creating beautiful living spaces using high-quality second-hand furniture is very important to Anja and Esther. They always keep their customers’ welfare and needs in mind, so when shopping for stock they choose only the best.
The success of the secondhand business shows that many people in Tenerife believe in sustainable, ecological purchasing when buying their furniture, a topic which is very close to the ladies’ hearts. They

Mayor demands passion
Mayor Bermúdez demands heart and soul commitment
A course as part of the project called Dynamisation and Tourism Awareness-Raising for Visitors and the Local Population, will be held in Santa Cruz until January next year. The training is designed to teach tourism profession-
als how to meet the growing demand in this sector. During a reception for the students, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez told them that, "Santa Cruz has a future in tourism and I am convinced that there is a future in this profession in
our city." Accompanied by the city's councillor for economic development, Alfonso Cabello, he added, "However, you have to go further than just passing on knowledge. Above all, tourists and visitors need the feeling that we show
them emotions and enthusiasm for living, knowing and loving this city. You are the ambassadors, the sellers of our city, so to speak. That's why we need qualified people who believe in their work and who will fill the visitors with passion, heart and soul." The development of tourism was one of the aims of Mayor Bermúdez when he took office, and he has already been successful. The number of overnight stays is constantly increasing and many tourists visit the capital. Santa Cruz offers a wide range of shopping, cultural and other attractions. A major project of opening the city to the Atlantic Ocean is taking shape with the design of the waterfront promenade and the gradual integration of the port into city life. The mayor emphasised, "You must arouse in the visitors, and also among our own island population, passion and a desire to n return".
Baby massage course
Touching promotes trust
The borough of Breña Baja in La Palma and the Doña Pepita nursery school are offering a course in baby massage for parents and babies under 12 months old. Through gentle massage, touch and body contact, trust between the parents and child is strengthened. Incidentally, the massage also strengthens the child’s physical and emotional development. The course is run by the child massage educator Ana Belén García, who was trained by the Spanish association for children’s massage and who takes care of the children at this centre. Councillor Fran Martín explained, “The key to making our centre a reference on the island is in our human potential, thanks to our qualified staff. They work with us year after year to ensure that parents in our community receive the greatn est possible support in raising their children.”

Brunelli's: where meat is celebrated decoration are just a few of the aspects which make a trip to this restaurant so special. The icing on the cake is that the sea is right at hand, just the other side of a gigantic 9.3m wide and 2.8m high panoramic window. When the weather is fine, it can be lowered completely
into the floor and a fresh sea breeze fills the room. It is one of the highlights of any visit and if there happens to be a romantic sunset at the same time, there couldn’t be a better setting, though Brunelli's is a restaurant to be enjoyed n at any time.
Restaurant with a social side
School bullying The motto of Brunelli's Restaurant, which is located just opposite the Loro Parque entrance in Punta Brava, is simple: "We have the best meat on this side of the Atlantic", they say. Matching the style of the American steak houses, the restaurant offers carnivorous enjoyment par excellence. This is due on the one hand to the high quality of
the meat, which comes from Black Angus cattle, for example, and on the other hand to the special oven, which is unique on the island. The Southbend is a high-performance induction furnace that reaches 800°C. The heat seals the meat’s pores so it remains perfectly juicy inside and always cooked perfectly. Above all, the produce is stored in ideal conditions
Culinary and atmospheric pleasure Brunelli’s T-Bone steak is a real hit. No cut is ordered more often Brunelli’s can not only offer meat - the rest of the menu also features various culinary pleasures

course, plenty of tempting desserts to choose from, such as a cheesecake with raisins, icecream sundae with egg liqueur, or a tasting dessert assortment for two. The offer is complemented by selected Spanish and Canarian wines as well as spirits. Just in time for Easter there is also the new spring/ summer menu with the latest inspirational creations. The two founders of ACNAE (Canarian Association Against School Bullying) Lorena Martín and Roberto García were delighted to find support from an unusual source in their fight against attacks on children and adolescents by their classmates. They work with schools, parents and teachers and are committed to raising awareness of bullying in schools among pupils and adults. It’s important to them that bullying is recognised fast and dealt with correctly. The owner of the restaurant Mil Sabores in Puerto de la Cruz Albert Amat agrees that this work is important. From September last year until the end of January 2018, guests at his restaurant were able to make a donation for the association when they paid for their meals. Tenerife Auditorium
French jewel for opera lovers Don Carlo, as he is called in French, is shaken by his unfulfilled love and political intrigue
The French version of the classic opera Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi with French libretto by François Joseph Méry and Camille du Locle, will be performed at the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín in Santa Cruz. The premiere of this version, based on Friedrich von Schiller’s drama, took place on March 11, 1867 in Le Peletier del Théâtre de l’ Académie Impériale de Musique in París, today’s opera house. The threehour opera, in five acts, will be conducted by musical director Jader Bignamini. The main characters are represented by soprano Yolanda Auyanet in the role of Isabel de Valois and tenor José Bros as Don Carlos. Subtitles will be offered in English and Spanish so that everyone can follow the story.
Verdi rewrote this opera several times until he was satisfied with the result. In 1987, the focus was on jealousy, betrayal, father and son conflicts and an amorous trio. King Felipe II and his son Don Carlos loved the same wife, Isabel de Valois, also known as Elisabetta. The young woman was supposed to marry the heir to the throne Carlos, but then she was forced by political circumstances to marry his father Felipe II in order to secure peace between Spain and France after years of bitter war. At this point in time, however, her love for Carlos was already deep. Therefore, her aria S’ancor si piange in cielo promises a great moment. Many themes are brought to life in this opera: freedom, love and friendship, tyranny, fanaticism, idealism and passion, as well as family
ties between father and son, and also between public and private life, the Church and the State, power and rebellion – all topics that are still valid today. The opera will be performed on March 10, 14 and 17 at 7.30pm. Tickets start at €20.
More than just opera The Adán Martín Auditorium’s repertoire has more to offer than just this first-class opera. Equally interesting is the Orquesta Barroca, which will perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons on March 15 at 7.30pm. This master composer from Venice wrote other classics and operas in addition to this famous work. The Tenerife-born tenor Agustín PrunellFriend, accompanied by the Orquesta Barroca, will perform
some of his arias, creating a special kind of musical enjoyment. On March 22 at 7.30pm, Quantum Ensemble will perform works by Maurice Ravel in the Chamber Hall under the title Evocaciones. The highlight of the programme will be the ensemble Tricicle with twelve of their best sketches in a show called Hits on March 24 and 25. Joan Gràcia Paco Mir and Carles Sans have made spectators all over the world laugh during their 40-year career. With this final tour they will bid farewell to the stage. Banco Popular’s shareholders can reclaim money invested
If you are one of the thousands of consumers who invested in stocks or bonds from Banco Popular, and especially if you are one of the shareholders who invested in the capital increase launched in 2016, you can recover the money invested which was lost following the purchase by Banco Santander. The period for claiming the nullity of the purchase of the shares or bonds, and there-
fore the return of the invested capital, is four years from when the error in the consent that led to its purchase was known. In the worst case, this period will begin on 7 June 2017, the date on which the purchase of Banco Popular by Santander for €1 was announced, following the notification by the European Central Bank of the infeasibility of Popular and the resolution agreement of Banco
Popular Español by the sole Board of Resolution. The first step will be to file a prior claim and although each case must be analysed, you can claim the entire amount invested, less dividends received, if they would have been collected. After the expiry of the twomonth period that the bank has to reply to it, in the event that the answer is no, or if it does not reply, it will be neces-
sary to go to court and file the corresponding lawsuit, requesting the Court to declare null and void the contract of sale of shares or bonds by mistake in the consent of the buyer, who acquired the shares or bonds before the image of economic and patrimonial solvency shown by the entity. We are still waiting for the first judicial decisions that we hope will be favorable to consumers, since we have the precedent of the BANKIA case, which was very similar in terms of the deception in the information provided to consumers about the financial situation of the bank at the time when the public offering of shares was launched, presenting accounts that were not real and showed profits, when the real balances of the bank's balance sheets showed a million euros in losses. If you are one of those affected, we encourage you to contact us without obligation by telephone 922 79 75 00 or email despacho@goyaabogados.com n
Supreme Court ruling
Islands owed €700 million
In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court judges upheld a Canary Islands appeal and confirmed that the Spanish Government owes the Canary Islands some €700 million. This sum is the result of an agreement with the Central Government for road construction projects between 2012 and 2016, which was unilaterally terminated by Mariano Rajoy’s government as part of its cutbacks. The Vice-President of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodriguez, sees the ruling as confirmation of the injustice suffered by the Canary Islands due to the lack of finance. He called for an urgent meeting with the Spanish Minister for Transport, Íñigo de la Serna, in order to find out how the ruling can be implemented and how the payment can be made. A new agreen ment on road construction is also to be negotiated.

Six tips for protecting and growing your wealth By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks
Today presents many challenges to preserving your wealth and seeing it grow over time. Alongside economic uncertainty surrounding Brexit, we have endured years of ultralow interest rates and an everchanging tax and regulatory landscape. All this makes it harder for investors to achieve returns that are not eroded by inflation and taxation. At times like this, careful planning plays a particularly important role in securing your financial security over the long term. 1. Establish a suitable strategy When it comes to investing, one size definitely does not fit all. What will suit you depends on your specific objectives, time-frame and attitude to risk. Your portfolio should be created and managed to meet your particular set of circumstances and goals.
2. Understand your appetite for risk Before investing, establish the right balance of risk and return for your peace of mind. Different investment assets represent varying levels of risk, from cash and fixed income assets (government and corporate bonds), to equities and ‘real assets’ like property. It is extremely difficult to effectively assess your own tolerance for risk. Instead, speak to an experienced adviser who can ask the right questions and use appropriate tools to create a clear and objective risk profile for you. They can then recommend an appropriate blend of investments to match your profile. 3. Identify your timeline for investing The longer you have to invest, the more risk you can generally afford to take. With time, you can ride out market volatility and benefit from compound returns. Understanding your time horizon is also the key to ensuring your investments offer the right level of ‘liquidity’.

Smooth sounds
North American singer-songwriter Dayna Kurtz will bring her very individual sound to La Laguna on March 11. Her vibrant yet emotional voice and unique blend of jazz, folk, pop and blues ensured Kurtz immediate popularity when she started out. Accordingly, she was named Female Songwriter of the Year in 1997 by the American National Academy of Songwriters. Over two decades and several successful albums later, the accomplished vocalist, composer, musician and producer is still going strong. As well as headlining at various festivals and concerts across the globe, she has also toured as a supporting act with the likes of stars such as Elvis Costello, B.B. King and Chris Whitley. Often compared to eminent female singers such as Nina Simone, Annie Lennox and Marianne Faithfull, Kurtz exudes strength with her lyrics, voice and style. Catch the concert at the Teatro Leal from 7.30pm onwards. Tickets, costing €8, can be bought from the theatre box office, Monday to Saturday, 11am to 1pm and 6pm to 8pm or by visiting www.teatroleal.com. See www. daynakurtz.com for more information on the artist. n
Girl power
Sweet California
Take note, because Sweet California, Spain’s hottest girl band of the moment, will be playing two dates in the Islands during the middle of March. Though only formed in 2013, the trio of female vocalists have already had three successful albums and numerous hit singles. Last year saw the group, made up of members Alba Reig, Sonia Gómez and Tamy Nsue, take their Ladies Tour across the nation, with many concerts sold out within a very short space of time. Lucky residents and visitors to Tenerife will be able to catch them at the Pabellón Santiago Martín in La Laguna on March 17. The band will also hold a concert in Gran Canaria at the Gran Canaria Arena in Las Palmas on March 16. Both shows start at 8.30pm. Tickets cost from €25 and can be purn chased online at www.tomaticket.es.

Tribute to Mina The wonderful Parole, Parole, Parole show pays tribute on March 23 to one of the most successful Italian singers of all time, known simply as Mina. A soprano renowned for her incredible three-octave vocal range, throughout her career Mina had an astonishing 77 albums and 71 singles in the Italian charts. Her earliest television appearances in 1959 were the first for a female rock and roll singer in Italy, and audiences were alternately shocked and excited by her strident singing style, wild gestures and whole-body shakes. Yet, that banshee was just the foremost of Mina’s incarnations, and she went on to reinvent herself constantly over the decades. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Mina’s music veered more towards pop than it had before, with softer, more ballad-like tunes – immediately appealing to a broader audience and dominating the charts for over 15 years.
A regular on all the major variety shows, she continued to experiment, combining traditional Italian melodies and swing music with elements of rhythm and blues, soul,
jazz and more. Though her last public performance was in 1978, she has continued to release almost yearly albums to the present day. Not only one of the greatest

Not rotten rock
Argentinean musician Ariel Rot will rock La Laguna with his inimitable sound on March 17. Ariel Rot brings the poetry and sensitivity that comes with age and experience to his mix of blues and rock music, and is still wowing the crowds after a career which has spanned more than four decades. After relocating to Spain as a young man, he became a member of the well-known 1970s Spanish rock group Tequila, with whom he recorded several hit albums before going solo and releasing collections such as Debajo del puente (Under the bridge) in 1983 and Vértigo (Vertigo) in 1985. In 1990 he joined the group Los Rodríguez, staying six years with them and releasing
six albums, including Buena Suerte (Good Luck) in 1991 and Hasta luego (See you later) in 1996. He then once again took up a solo career, producing a stream of discs such as Hablando solo (Talking to yourself, 1997), Cenizas en el aire (Ash in the air, 2000), Ahora piden tu cabeza (Now they’re asking for your head, 2005) and La Manada (The pack, 2016). Laid back, cheeky and a great guitarist, Ariel Rot is always a delight. See him at the Teatro Leal, kicking off at 8.30pm, for just €15 entrance. Tickets can be purchased from the theatre box office, Monday to Saturday, 11am to 1pm and 6pm to 8pm or by visiting n www.teatroleal.com.

musical talents around, Mina was also a one-woman society changer. With her independent lifestyle, wild behaviour and overt sex appeal, not to mention lyrics which dealt with subjects which were still heavily taboo at the time, such as religion, smoking and sex, she paved the way for many a modern woman. Parole, Parole, Parole will take the audience on a journey through history. Musical delights from Mina’s career are interspersed with anecdotes and stories about her life. The main vocalist for the evening is Jenny Rospo, who will be backed by Fabrizio Previdi on guitar, Daniele Zangrillo playing bass, Paolo Carena on drums, Roberto Rubino on piano, and the delightful Sam Pearce on saxophone. The show is at the Infanta Leonor Auditorium in Los Cristianos, starting 8.30pm. Tickets cost €17 and can be purchased via www.arona.org. n

Cold or flu (and what to do)

medical website WebMd, “If you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck, it’s probably the flu”. Symptoms tend to come on faster and suddenly, whereas cold symptoms are normally less intense and include a runny or stuffy nose and a sore throat. You can also get a sore throat with flu, but you will probably feel tired, have other symptoms as well and it will come at you more quickly. Colds develop more slowly and last up to 10 days, flu symptoms should improve between two to five days, but you may feel fatigued for a week or even up to three weeks if, for example, you are older or have respiratory problems, long-term (chronic) diseases or a weak immune system. You start off feeling tired and achy and it drags on. With a cold the height of it is over in just a few days. If you are running a temperature it’s probably flu, although some people do get a slight
exception). Almost 450 people have been hospitalised so far in the Islands.
Boost your immune system with regular exercise Rhinovirus is the most common cause of colds
Cold vs flu Both these illnesses are caused by a virus, but they are very different in their scope and potential. The rhinovirus is the main cause of the common cold and it proliferates at temperatures between 33 and 35ºC, the normal nasal temperatures. There are three types of flu virus that affect human beings, A, B and C, and all of them can have serious and even deadly complications.

Before you reach for an OTC remedy or get the chicken soup on, be sure of what you’re dealing with. Prescription antiviral meds for flu can cut the time you’re ill by one or two days if you start them within 48 hours of the first symptoms. OTC drugs for headaches, congestion or a cough can make you more comfortable. Many cough and cold medicines have the same ingredients, so read the labels well or ask your chemist to make sure you’re not overdosing. Some symptoms are common to both illnesses: coughs, headaches and earaches for example, and some people also sneeze with both and get a stuffy nose. However, flu symptoms are more painful and have a more rapid onset. In the words of the popular Therapies, Spiritual hypnosis, Past life regression

In a year that has seen a flu reach epidemic proportions in the Islands and over 20 deaths, more than 450 nationally, we take a look at how to deal with these seasonal illnesses and ways of boosting the immune system to try and prevent them. Different illnesses have individual levels of ‘epidemic’, the intensity measures for flu aren’t the same as the level for meningitis for example. However, this year, at its peak there were over 230 cases of flu for every 100,000 habitants in the Canaries. Due to our climate, we tend to get hit later than the Peninsula and northern Europe (last year was a rare
fever with colds. Children’s fevers tend to be higher and they are more likely to get a temperature with a cold. Long term earache may mean an infection and needs attention from a doctor. Similarly, if you have a fever that is very high or lasts for too long despite medication, or a persistent cough, you need to see your GP. Both colds and flu can also lead to a sinus infection which, apart from the rather foul, gunky, green discharge, can cause headaches and pain in your nasal bridge, cheeks and forehead. As children, many of us were taught to cover our mouths with our hands to stop spreading the disease to others, but then of course we use keyboards, a computer mouse, door handles, lift buttons, light switches etc. and pass it on anyway. These days it’s recommended that you sneeze into your elbow and wash your hands frequently
and thoroughly with soap and warm water, especially after using a tissue for example. Alcohol based sanitizers are also effective, and mini-bottles are available from the local chemist to pop in a pocket or your handbag. A frequent excuse for not getting the annual recommended vaccination is that the virus
changes, which is true. It’s made from proteins found on versions of last year’s flu, but it does help your body get ready to recognise the virus and fight when you’re exposed to the real thing. Of the deaths this year in the Islands, over 80 per cent of the victims hadn’t bothered to get the vaccine.

Animal charities’ round up Acción del Sol Help at the refuge comes to us in many ways. Recently, Mrs Canary Islands, aka Karolina Loceryte from Lithuania, has been visiting the refuge with her two sons to raise awareness of the dire situation here in Tenerife. Our refuge, along with others, is full of dogs, through no fault of their own, all desperately looking for a loving home. We can never stress enough the importance of sterilising or castrating your dog to avoid unwanted puppies. Advertising is the most important thing we can do to help re-home the dogs, which Karolina is helping to do. The constant support of our dedicated volunteers, who bring so much fun and love to the dogs, all helps to give the best life we can to the over 220 dogs in our care. How you can help Many times we are asked how people can help. We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic, eg. hydrogen peroxide, betadine (iodine), alcohol, towels, blankets and sheets, cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, collars, tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, beds, and dog jackets for when our dogs fly to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. In addition, we are desperately looking for people who are travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to be a flight sponsor to a dog. All that’s needed is a little time at the airport, all the necessary paperwork and handling of the dogs is done

K9 Ways to help If you wish to support the K9 animal refuge and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats in Tenerife, we would be very appreciative. There are several ways to help: you can buy our merchandise (T-shirts, vests, key rings, wristbands and more) at K9, you can sponsor one of our wonderful sponsor dogs via our website,
for flights to Munich or Stuttgart. If you are able to accompany our dogs during their flights, please contact us as soon as you can. Shop till you drop Visit our shop at Alcalá Plaza, every day from 10am to 2pm. Donations of quality household goods, clothes, books, shoes or other items are very welcome. Call 646 561 035 to arrange collection of larger items from all local areas. Proceeds from our shop are essential to ensuring our K9 dogs have everything they need to make their time at the refuge as comfortable as possible. Win a pet portrait Help a refuge dog at the Tierra Blanca animal refuge and you could win a beautiful portrait of your pet. There are thousands of abandoned dogs in Tenerife. Five hundred of them live at Tierra Blanca, waiting to be adopted. Can you spare a couple of hours to play with the puppies? Or take a dog for a walk? If you do, then you could win a beautiful acrylic painting of your dog by Nikki Attree. The one pictured here is a portrait of one of the abandoned dogs at the Tierra Blanca refuge, located near Fasnia, and can be viewed there. To be in with a chance to win, just post a photo of your pet on Nikki’s Facebook page: ‘Gizmospokesmutt’ and mention which day you visited the refuge. The dogs really appreciate a change of scenery and it’s crucial that they socialise with humans as it increases their chances to be adopted. You might even fall in love with a pooch and end up taking them home with you! The closing date for the competition is April 10. Telephone 606 500 171 or visit www.cpatierrablanca. Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere to recuperate. We provide all the essentials: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc, and all veterinary
bills are covered. We also find them homes, so you don’t need to do this. Adoptions Please consider adopting from us. All of our cats go on a week’s trial in your home. If you adopt two kittens together then kitten injection, micro chip and neutering is free for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten or two and both kittens receive the above treatments for free. Cute Ella
The lovely Ella is around three or four years old and is a wolfhound cross. She’s an incredibly lovable dog who was abandoned with her two young pups just over a year ago, and although the pups were soon homed, Ella is still living at K9. She really deserves a loving, safe home with a big garden. She’s not too good with other dogs so will be better suited to a onedog home. If you would like to offer her a second chance, please contact K9 by calling 667 638 468 or emailing info@k9tenerife.com. n

Spring Festival at the flea market
The Spring Festival will be celebrated all day long. From midday on, the carousel will start to turn and the fun will begin. From around 6pm, there will be live music entertainment which continues
The best entertainment for the whole family is promised by the first Spring Festival, which will take place from March 15 to 18 on the Rastro site at Guaza in the district of Arona. Following the example of the Munich or Stuttgart Spring Festivals, the organisers want to celebrate the beginning of the season in Tenerife. Even if it is the island of eternal spring, it doesn't matter. Spring fever, blossoms, moving life outdoors and romance - these are all attributes associated with spring which can be celebrated in Tenerife. The festival will become really Bavarian with a beer tent, wheat beer, fried chicken, sausages with sauerkraut and liver loaf roll, a hearty toast and a rustic celebration. If you prefer it less hearty, you could have a glass or tipple at the wine or champagne bar. Of course, the approximately 60 flea market stalls will also be open from 8.30am. They offer a colourful range of products that is as multicultural as the stand operators, who come from Spain, Austria, Germany, Italy, Venezuela, Colombia, Morocco, Senegal and beyond.
until midnight. In between there will be rides and stalls where the whole family can enjoy themselves, and there will also be surprises with karaoke interludes and a fashion show. This spring festival is to be the prelude to others of its kind, as well as October festivals, which will make the Guaza Rastro known
far beyond its own community borders. The musician and main organiser Alexander Vespremi said: "This festival will be a pleasure for the whole family, the little sister of the Oktoberfest, which will follow in autumn." To make it work, let's make sure there are as many guests as possible, in other words: Let's go! n

Palms take Division Two There has been a real title battle all season in Division Two of the Direct Telecom Pool League. At one stage or another six teams have led or been genuine contenders. There really is not much between most of the teams it seems. However at the tape, the cream rose to the top and Palms Rebels were crowned champions after another emphatic win. It’s well deserved as they have been excellent since Christmas.

It will be interesting to see how they will do in the top flight next season. There is still a good scrap for second and third place. Yate’s Bar are in the pole position but they do still have two tricky games to play. Bluebell A and Bluebell B also have a tasty derby match to come which will decide where they will end up. In Division One, Pool Centre will take the silver honours after a fine comeback win at James Hammers C. They trailed 4:1 and with Palms Elite winning at Phoenix they needed to win in La Caleta. Staring down the barrel, they managed to get things going and remarkably they reeled off all the remaining frames to clinch the win and the runnersup trophy. Palms Elite will take
third if they can beat Exiles A and Dreamers will be ready to overtake them if they fail to do so. At the tail end there are still three teams who can finish bottom. Terrace Subs came from 3:0 down to chin Treehouse A and give themselves a real chance of avoiding the wooden spoon. This pushed Terrace Originals to the foot of the table. They need to get a draw at champions Gaffers A to move above the Subs. Then it gets really interesting as Phoenix Potters would then finish last if they failed to win four frames against Tenerife Hammers A! It’s that tight after n another superb season. Sailing the three seas
Archive picture of a sailing regatta off Playa San Juan
An Erasmus+Sport programme is bringing together likeminded children and young people aged between six and 16 years in Guía de Isora from here, Bulgaria and Greece to sail together. This is the first time that a Canarian community has participated in this sports exchange programme. The young sailors in the Laser and Optimist categories from Greece and Bulgaria
are guests of the borough of Guía de Isora for a week until March 10, with Playa San Juan being the base for their sport. They will be able to experience the Canary Islands from the water and on land. In addition to the sporting exchange and different marine customs, the initiative focuses on meeting other nationalities and cultures and practicing the English language. Sports coun-
cillor José Rivero explained that, "We want our young people to compete and have new experiences, just as they will have when they travel to Bulgaria and Greece to sail there. This will allow our young sailors to find out what it feels like to sail in the Aegean and Black Seas." The sailing school in Playa San Juan was one of the first nautical schools on the island and it is one of the few public schools. The next meetings will take place in Greece in May and October and in Bulgaria in July and November. The young Canarians are already looking forward to it. At the moment it is primarily about giving their young Greek and Bulgarian guests a good impression of Tenerife. On land, excursions have been organised, festivals will be held and selected documentaries from the MiradasDoc Festival video library will be shown. They should return home with many memories and hopefully a good lasting n impression.
Indoor athletics
Gold and silver for Tenerife team Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo recently congratulated the two medallists from the Tenerife CajaCanarias team on two gold medals they won at the Spanish indoor track and field championships. Heptathlon Jonay Jordán not only won a gold medal, but also set a new Canary Islands record with 5,709 points. In addition, he surpassed his own best results in the 60-metre and hurdles as well as in shot put. His colleague Simón Siverio from Tegueste, with a super leap of over 2.18 metres, also stood out from all the others and secured a gold medal in the high jump.
During the reception Clavijo also pointed out the excellent result from Samuel García from La Palma who won the silver medal in the 400-metre race. He wished all three of them just as much success at this year’s European Champi-
onships. He told them, “You embody the greatest values of youth and serve as a role model for other young athletes. You are an incentive to make an effort despite all the difficulties on the way to n reaching the top.”

LPA NightRun The San Roque Hospitals’ LPA NightRun, a five-kilometre or ten-kilometre urban race in Las Palmas, kicks off for the sixth time on October 27 at 8.30pm. A main objective is to keep this race growing in importance on the national scene and the promotional activity has already begun. This golden event on the Gran Canaria European Sports Island campaign was presented in Andalusia with a stand at the sports fair in Seville. The Zurich Marathon
in Seville has already been a big advertiser among athletes. Sports councillor Aridany Romero summarised, saying that, “The response at the fair was very positive and international. Athletes from Italy, Sweden, Russia and South Africa were interested in us.” Hundreds of curious people visited the stand to find out about the race. Together with the main sponsor Hospitales San Roque, the island promotional team will also be present at the marathons

Their spectacular success even surprised the girls and their coach
It looks very easy when the rhythmic gymnasts dance across the floor with their ribbons, balls, hoops or without props, however, there is a lot of hard training behind so much elegance. For the students of Club Adoney in Granadilla de
Abona, the year began spectacularly at the local Championships when they did extremely well at their home stadium. A total of 75 gymnasts from twelve Tenerife teams competed against each other, and the young Granadilla team came first in all age
groups in which they participated, winning six gold medals. Their coach Laura García said, “This is the first competition of the season and we still can’t believe how well we’ve done”. The Canarian and Spanish championships are their n next challenges.

Nomads F.C.
Your football club needs you! Although the season is in full swing and the Nomads F.C. teams are battling hard at all levels, we need to expand our squad for the Under-14s. Our fun training sessions for this squad are held every Wednesday and Friday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at our own training facilities opposite the Villa Mandi in Las Américas. Weekly matches are usually held on Saturdays or Sundays. If your son or daughter wants to learn some new football skills, make new friends and help the Under-14s compete in the league, bring them down to a session to see what it’s all about, or call us on 654 200 470. We welcome all abilities and nationalities - hence the club name! Can you believe it? Most of our young players at Nomads F.C. speak two or more languages, which will already give them a head start when they enter the job market in years to come. However, Simon Mignolet is top of the league when it comes to language abilities. The Liverpool keeper speaks five - Flemish, English, French, Dutch and German. Oh, and he has a degree in Political Science. Not a bad C.V. for a footballer! How to contact us Further details on the local football can be found at: www. nomadsfc.com. Top form as dreams return 26/02/2018 CD Tenerife 3:1 CD Lugo Orange weather alerts for rain and high winds due to Storm Emma led to a rare postponed home fixture for CD Tenerife, the first ever for a weather related reason, but CD Lugo agreed to prolong their stay so the game could be played the following evening. The blanquiazules thoroughly deserved their win against a side that’d spent many weeks at the higher end of the table. The visitors took a shock early lead after just 14 minutes as Fede Vico sneaked in at the far post to prod the ball into the net. But this Tenerife side under new boss Etxeberria have a confident look about them and they were soon level through a Samuele Longo penalty, and only another two minutes passed before Juan Villa fired Tenerife into a 2-1 lead. After the break, Tenerife kept up the “intensity”, a word Etxeberria is keen to impress on his players. Alberto has been given a new lease of life under the new boss and he has taken his chance with open arms, he was outstanding. Another player to have made a name for him-
self recently is new signing Alex Mula, one of the quickest players ever seen in a Tenerife shirt and it’s exciting to see him attack down the left,
Tenerife’s away form has been poor this season. Winning at home and drawing away would just about suffice to make the 63 points needed for the
erife outfit is a different animal than the tepid, timid version we have seen in previous away matches. They fought back and were soon level thanks to Juan Villar taking a fine goal from the edge of the box, and then took the lead on the hour mark. Alvedaño almost made it a third before the break when
play-offs but that leaves little ground for home slip ups. The trip to Tarragona was delayed due to stormy conditions, but the team were confident and it was great at last to have all the key players returned from injury. Once again however Tenerife fell behind early on when Tete Morente volleyed home from close range. But this Ten-
his header struck the bar. In the second half, the home side tried to equalise but failed to create any decent chances. Tenerife could have made it three when Longo struck the post and Malbasic had a great effort saved but it mattered little. An excellent 1-2 away win for Tenerife, and can we dare n to dream?
A happy changing room after Tenerife’s latest victory
an area lacking this season. And on the hour mark it was Mula who made the score 3-1 after a good run by Honduran Bryan Acosta. A fine win and one that kept Tenerife’s hopes alive for a late run into the play-offs. 04/03/2018 Nastic de Tarragona 1: 2 CD Tenerife

Take stock to see how much you have learned and how far you have come. You will soon be out of the woods. Cancer 22.06 - 22.07 Your partner (or if not a romantic partner, a business collaborator), has been a thorn in your side since early in the year. Whatever happens, it may not be entirely your fault, so don’t beat yourself up. You are growing in maturity by leaps and bounds. Leo 23.07 - 23.08 March holds all the promise of being a banner month for you! Romance will be on the cards, with a favourite day being March 17 when all your dreams will get a boost. You’ll have three glorious weeks to take advantage of all the golden vibrations due. Don’t waste a single precious moment! You have all the best possible aspects - use them or lose them! Libra 24.09 - 23.10 The new moon on the 17th will be positive for you and there are good vibes coming from inspirational, romantic Neptune too! If your friends have promised to fix you up with one or two blind dates, but keep forgetting, this is the month to remind them. Scorpio 24.10 - 22.11 You like it when things begin to pop, and that’s why you will enjoy March. You were highly intuitive at this month’s full moon; did you listen to your hunch? A secret may come out and change your view of a certain situation. Expect happiness and growth. Sagittarius 23.11 - 21.12 This will be a fantastic epoch, filled with so much good news that at times you’ll tingle down to your toes. Capricorn 22.12 - 20.01 Travel may brighten this period for you, and give you the change of scene you may need to refresh and renew yourself. Look to creative projects, old friends and romantic relationships. In love, you may have to revisit an old issue with your sweetheart. Aquarius 21.01 - 20.02 The launching period of your new cycle will start soon. Others may try to second-guess your hopes and plans, but you mustn’t let them. If you engage in gossip, you might dilute your vision - and that might make you waver in your resolve. Keep your counsel. Pisces 21.02 - 20.03 From March 10 onward, your professional efforts will get a huge push forward. Romantically, you have a lot to look forward to as well! came to Tenerife to take up a temporary position. Offered a post with a prominent local developer, he spent 15 years gaining insight into the fields of construction and property before opening his own estate agency, in 1994: the first in Los Gigantes. We’ve spoken about the high quality of life that’s available in Tenerife in general. What is it about Los Gigantes that made you stay in this area in particular? Los Gigantes has been developed in a different way to other major tourist resorts in the south. Thanks to its natural topography, including the magnificent cliffs the town takes its name from, a lot more thought has had to be applied to construction, avoiding the unsightly sprawl that can unfortunately be seen in some other areas. Subsequently, the town has always maintained a relaxed atmosphere to it, a feeling of community that can be lost in larger urbanisations. A community you have supported in various ways… Well, I firmly believe that everyone can make a contribution. I’ve been involved with the Lions International and María García Estrada charities for many years, helping to raise funds for underprivileged families and cancer research. Supporting causes such as these is important to me, so it’s very satisfying. Not only a successful business man, but also one with a conscience. And next edition, readers can find out what Paul Ruane does for fun… n

Changes in Los Gigantes Over 40 years ago you would not have been able to find a property for sale in Los Gigantes on the westerly tip of Tenerife, but since then it has been developed from an area of barren land to a bustling holiday resort and is now a firm favourite amongst many visitors to the island. Today, properties for sale come in all shapes, sizes and prices, but all are in keeping with the village ambience, many being low-level so as not to ruin the look and feel of the resort, which is based in the borough of Santiago del Teide. With the average temperature of 21.5°C, this part of Tenerife has the best climate in the Canary Islands. Additionally, as a result of proximity to the tropic of cancer, the position of the sun means there is an average of 10.5 hours sunlight in December and up to 14 hours during the summer. These facts together with a low humidity level make the Los Gigantes area probably the most idyllic spot in Europe. Los Gigantes was declared a place of National Touristic Importance in the mid 1960s and since then has been developed in a tasteful and charming
In a region that is already well established as one of the most popular areas of the island to live in or visit, Los Gigantes is to be completed with 5-star developments and will soon boast two brand new luxury complexes. The 5-star Cristal and Aqua Suites developments will perfectly complement existing accommodation options, adding a touch of 5-star comfort to this corner of paradise. The first of these excellent developments will be wholly residential, whilst the second will have touristic licences. They offer fantastic investment opportunities for those who are considering rentals as well as others seeking the residential option.

way. Just walking through the resort and taking in the fantastic array of trees and tropical flowers makes a stay there so much more colourful and pleasant. Los Gigantes and Tenerife can offer you everything that you would want as your holiday home destination. Locally, there is a varied selection of restaurants, bars and shopping venues, and only 30 minutes away is the still growing resort of Playa de Las Américas. Los Gigantes is home to one of the few Michelin-starred restaurants on the island, namely, El Rincón de Juan Carlos.
Aqua suites Aqua suites is a development of 20 units, consisting of 10 two-bedroom duplexes and 10 two-bedroom triplexes. Due to start construction in
July/August of this year, they will provide modern living in elegant, superior quality homes, which benefit from the same fabulous views as Cristal. Each house has a ground floor which is made up of a large living area, dining room-kitchen, toilet, laundry and an internal staircase leading to the upper storey. Two en suite bedrooms, each boasting a sleeping area, dressing room and bathroom with bath and shower, are located on the top floor of each house. Private infinity swimming pools occupy the entire front of the terraces. These are elevated so the water level seems to melt into the ocean,

Cristal
Going far with 5-star
When looking at the plans for the Cristal development it can be hard to imagine the sheer scale of each property, until you realise that only 19 units will occupy the same land space as the adjacent construction of 60 apartments. Even the smallest property in Cristal will have a frontage of over 16 metres: All the better to enjoy the incredible 180° views of the Atlantic Ocean, island of La Gomera, majestic Los Gigantes cliffs and endless coastline. Luxurious and well appointed, each one will be completely furnished to the smallest detail. The fixtures, fittings and general quality will be of the highest standards, with a contemporary, open-plan design that emphasises the use of glass, allowing natural light to flood all interiors. In addition, each will have its own swimming pool and garage and there is a 24-hour reception on site. This development presents a harmonious balance between indoor and out-
Mark Akkerman, Director of the Royal Sun Resort, is enthusiastic about the latest additions to the area. “We at the Royal Sun Resort welcome all new high quality projects that are happening in 2018 in Los Gigantes, and I do believe the area will benefit from new, fresh and modern thinking that will make it even more attractive for residents and tourists. “Around one year ago we opened our Aqua restaurant, run by famous Canarian chef Lucas Maes. I had a good feeling about this project from the beginning, as there is certainly a market for something a little different in Los Gigantes, restaurants with only the best service, views and, of course, menu. Aqua is one of the best in town, maintaining this position with the same high level of reviews and feedback from customers as at the beginning. It is a clear example that there’s a place for 5-star quality and service in Los Gigantes.”
