Runway project lands on time Recent closures at Tenerife’s Reina Sofía Airport between 11pm and 6.30am may have unnerved some tourism organisations, but all worries over possible delays to the project are now over, as it was completed right on target. According to airport operator AENA, the works, which started on April 1, were necessary for safety and modernisation reasons. As well as various other tasks, lighting and signalling were renewed, and runways seven to 25 and exits B3, B4 and B5 were resurfaced to improve carrying capacity and surface friction. In agreement with affected airlines, flight schedules were changed to avoid landings between the allotted hours.

No homelessness and culture for all The local council headed by Santa Cruz mayor José Manuel Bermúdez has prevented around a hundred evictions since 2012, as well as finding practical solutions for those who are homeless. The latest case to have been highlighted is of a mother of three named Tamara G. Faced at the end of June with being evicted from her property, council intervention ensured that she and her family were offered temporary accommodation until an apartment sponsored by social welfare can be found. Just one of many cases, over the past few years the council has repeatedly mediated between banks and owners with the aim of preventing or postponing evictions until alternative accommodation can be found. Continued from front page Happily, during the three months of the project, only one plane had to be diverted, to the airport on Gran Canaria, and this was due to its having left its place of origin much later than planned. Nevertheless, Fuerteventura airport had also been kept on alert for if alternatives were needed. Thankfully, with plenty of time for the summer onslaught, normal operations began on July 1 and flights are now landing around the clock once again. Over €4.7 million were invested in the project, which covered an area of 190,000m2. A mind-boggling 30,000 tons of asphalt, 590 signalling beacons, 66,270m of cable and 40,000m2 of paint were used. Roughly speaking, that would correspond to an area equivalent to 26 football pitches, cable lines that would extend from the north to the south airport if rolled out, and enough paint to cover 153 tennis courts. More than 70 construction company employees and various airport staff were involved in the project. The greatest challenge was carrying out the work quickly and in sections, to ensure that each night’s labour was completed in time to allow flights to commence once again at 6.30am each morning. It has to be said that, logistically speaking and in contrary to many schemes in the archipelago, n the precision landing on July 1 is a masterpiece.

Furthermore, the completion of unfinished buildings currently owned by banks, which will then become the property of the city, is also under consideration. Bermúdez also referred to an ongoing agreement with a financial entity for the letting of 60 residential units to
individuals and families receiving rent subsidies from the city adminstration. "We have worked hard on this problem and will continue to do so. We know this predicament doesn’t affect our city only, but nevertheless we want to face up to it and create solutions", the mayor explained. The council currently supports over 800 families via the provision of rented accommodation, affordable social housing or rent subsidies so people can continue living in their own homes. There are also a number of projects which aim to help those who are already homeless to once again have a roof over their heads.

This is why Santa Cruz’s cultural department, headed by José Carlos Acha, launched the ‘Culture for all’ project in cooperation with the IMAS social office, to ensure that those who are socially disadvantaged can also enjoy its benefits. The scheme will be equally applied to council run occasions as well as external productions, such as those offered in the Teatro Guimerá, museums or other venues. Over 200 people have already benefited from the move in 2017 alone. More than half of these were children and young adults from lowincome families. Santa Cruz council is investing in temporary housing, which can be quickly made available in an emergency
As soon as a sailing boat with 1,850 kilograms of cocaine on board had been intercepted off the coast of El Hierro and the three crew members arrested (as reported in our last issue), the next drug consignment fell into the net. This boat was also on a transatlantic voyage and was intercepted by the special GEO task force in cooperation with the Lisbon judicial police, near the Azores. The Navy patrol vessel Atalaya backed up the forces. The sailing boat called Wall Street had loaded 1,500 kilograms of cocaine in specially equipped hiding places. The boat, which flew the Dutch flag, had been under observation since March. After it had been determined that it had set off from South America for the Spanish Peninsula, everything was prepared to intercept it in the Atlantic. In addition to the drugs, €5,000 in cash, satellite-supported computers and a rifle with ten cartridges were seized. The crew, one American and two Croatians, were arrested. This boat crew worked under the same modus operandi as the previously intercepted vessel. It brought large quantities of cocaine either directly to a Spanish port or transferred the drugs to chartered pleasure boats out at sea. The cocaine was taken ashore and hidden in warehouses from where it was n distributed to the black market throughout Europe.

Breast cancer advances The HUC in Tenerife is implementing a treatment that delays breast cancer relapse. Doctors Norberto Batista and Josefina Cruz from the University Hospital of the Canary Islands, explain that the process, based on the use of cyclin inhibitors, doubles the time that elapses between when a patient is operated on and receives treatment until the disease comes back. Therapies based on cyclin inhibitors have been an important step in the treatment of breast cancer patients in recent months. The University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) has incorporated this type of tool through a treatment that, after its pertinent previous research, has shown that it doubles the time that elapses between a patient undergoing surgery and receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy until the disease reappears and needs new cycles. Batista explained that this type of treatment is not indicated
for all patients, but it is indicated for the type of tumours which express hormone receptors- that affects between 60 and 70 per cent of patients. This new treatment is applied post-op and when the patient has received her or his first chemotherapy or radiotherapy session. Once the process is completed, along with the usual medication for each case, this hormone is administered in a complementary manner. Thus, on average, if a patient before could be expected to be about 12 months without the need to repeat aggressive treatments, with this formula repeat sessions could be delayed up to 24 months. The HUC participated in the studies of the two drugs indicated for these cases. Although it isn’t yet confirmed whether this type of therapy could contribute to a higher survival rate, the route continues to be investigated given the good results that have been seen so far.

Investigations In addition, the HUC is participating in two other research projects related to the potential benefits of the use of cyclin inhibitors for breast cancer. Both trials are international
and the University Hospital is the only centre participating in the Canary Islands. Both Batista and Cruz stressed that the treatment that is already being administered and the two trials have already improved the quality of life of breast cancer patients, since, at
least what has been proven, is that they delay the time when the pathology reappears and, therefore, all the consequences of applying more drugs or going through more surgery. All these advances will allow treatments to be more personalised and adapted to each patient.
The HUC is again unique in the Canaries in its inclusion in the programme to use liquid biopsies as a tool to detect certain tumours. Batista explained that it can be used to detect some cancers via blood tests. The test uses specialised equipment and in the HUC it is being used to test for cancer of the lungs, colon and skin. The new protocol is more effective and a lot less invasive than previous tests and freezing the samples allows comparison with previous phases of the illness. A spokesperson for the Foundation Walk for Life told us, “These latest results, and in our own Islands, underline the importance of investigation and are why, in addition to our support projects, a part of the money raised by our Foundation every year goes to research, including that into the use of n liquid biopsies”.

Research shortage in Spain
When knowledge falls by the wayside... Every year the universities in Spain train young students who would like to go on to research, in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and environmental sciences. However, research in Spain has stalled, presaging a dangerous situation. Between 2008 and 2014, the number of patents registered in Spain fell by 60 per cent. No wonder, because there has been an exodus of scientists from the country. Vicente Larraga, Professor of research at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) explained "We know that we lost around 27,000 research contracts between 2011 and 2016. We estimate that about 25,000 scientists are enrolled in companies abroad and about 15,000 are permanently employed in companies abroad. If we are not careful, in six to seven years

we will have no scientists at all in Spain. Young people in particular are leaving because they have better research prospects elsewhere. There will always be a vacuum left by those who will not return." Following a
recent visit to Tenerife's Institute for Tropical Diseases, Larraga continued "In view of the great efforts and hurdles that this institute has to deal with, it has done an astonishingly good job over the last 15 years. It has
developed from a faculty of the university into a good research centre. With a little more support, a breath of fresh air and institutional support, it could become an institute of international renown." Larraga sees the biggest problems in the small budgets and an uncoordinated approach, and explaining the situation he said that "In recent years we have had a government that did not believe in science, but was fully committed to tourism. The development of both sectors is possible in parallel. We do not want to leave research to Germany and Sweden. Science can also contribute to the wellbeing of a society, but we have just put numerous projects on hold." He argues that it is not too late to act, but that action must be taken, and soon, so that Spanish scientists don’t n move abroad.
International recognition
La Orotava, the tranquil town
La Orotava is the first Canarian borough to have recently received an international seal of sustainable tourism quality. It was accepted into the prestigious network Cittaslow at a meeting in Mirande, France, and is now one of ten Spanish boroughs to participate in the network. Only towns and boroughs with less than 50,000 inhabitants are eligible. It’s basically about sustainable tourism and, above all, slowing down. Overcrowded cities with traffic jams, noise and a lot of asphalt make these other locations the perfect backdrop to create an escape from the bustle of modern life. Quality of life, authenticity, providing a combination of history and modernity to future generations, these are the attributes that characterise these boroughs. Living in and with nature and the preservation of unique monuments are further strengths. The network currently includes 236 towns and boroughs from 30 countries around the world, including Australia, France, China, Turkey, South Korea and the USA. Puerto residents‘ recycling lead
The waste balance for Puerto de La Cruz was very positive last year - the local residents separated and dumped their rubbish unusually well compared to the average for the Canary Islands.

Despite an increase to 30,036 inhabitants last year, almost 540 more than in 2016, the city's residents seem to accept the concept of waste separation and recycling well and
incorporate it into their daily lives. This is supported by the above-average figures collected from the 202 containers in the city area. In 2017, a total of 403,359 kilograms of
light packaging waste was collected. Compared to the previous year, this represents growth of more than 17 per cent. On average, each Puerto resident collected and disposed of 13.7 kilograms of light packaging, while the Canary Islands average is 9.4 kilograms per head. Paper and cardboard disposed of reached 470,340 kilograms. This corresponds to 15.9 kilograms per inhabitant and thus almost four kilograms per capita above the average for the Canary Islands last year. The residents have been particularly diligent in disposing of glass. A total of 1,188 tons were collected in the corresponding containers, and that's nine per cent more than in the previous year. This corresponds to almost 40 kilograms per head per year, whilst the regional average is only just over 16 kilograms. Even if the concept is taking time to reach all households, the population seems to be integrating more sustainability into day to day life. This year, the city has also installed brown containers in urban areas with large gardens, where plant remains can be thrown away for composting - another step towards n greater sustainability.

The borough of Arona has handed over a cheque for €57,000 to the Cruz Roja (Spanish Red Cross) through its social services department, to subsidise their mobile emergency social unit. The staff of this non-profit organisation looks after the homeless in the borough. This means their mobile unit visits them at various points, distributing breakfast and a hot dinner to ensure a basic diet for those in need. Their proximity to those affected enables Red Cross staff to detect illnesses early on and take the necessary steps for treatment. In addition, as persons of trust, they act as important liaison officers with the borough’s social services department. This will also further promote the innovative ‘Housing First’ concept, which is a pioneering programme for the Canaries, initially providing accommodation for the homeless and later for their integration into society. The cause of the homelessness of these many individuals are complicated and various and are not only due to the lack of affordable housing. Mental illness, broken families, addictions or integration difficulties after imprisonment are some of the many reasons for people to be left without a roof over their head. n

CEPSA refinery to disappear Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez called it an “historic moment” when he signed a collaboration agreement together with CEPSA oil refinery representative Pedro Miró Roig for the regeneration of the land the Cepsa refinery in the capital currently occupies. The refinery is finally to be removed from the city, a long cherished wish which has finally come true. As part of the Santa Cruz Verde 2030 project, an area of 573,000 square metres will be recovered for the city, 67 per cent of which will be reserved for public use and 33 per cent for commercial use. There has never been such a land reclamation within a city in Europe. Green spaces will occupy 41 per cent of the total and they will become the new green lung of the city and create a connection with the Palmetum Botanical Garden and the Parque Marítimo
and its sea water swimming pool. Access to the sea and a beach or bathing area are to be created. Sports zones, a new artery for driving into the city from the south and an area for integrating a railway station for the southern route are also planned. In addition, there will be promenades, the cycling path along the Añaza coast will be extended, and the project will also include social housing. The site is set to become a model example of sustainable urban development and the use of clean energy. For Mayor Bermúdez, this agreement marks a milestone between the “before and after”. It will promote transparency and openness, so that the residents can contribute interactively with proposals for the redesign of this part of the city. An opening to the sea, a better quality of life, cleaner air and the promotion of the tourist development of

the city are just some of the key words with which Mayor Bermúdez described his joy at the agreement. He estimates that around 3,200 direct and indirect jobs will be created in the capital as a result of this redevelopment.
Threatened by extinction
Giant lizard population dwindling There are only a few of Tenerife’s giant lizards remaining, currently living in two main spots – the Montaña de Guaza and the Teno Massif. Their main enemies are wild cats. In order to guarantee the survival of the lizards, the Environmental Protection Agency is currently collecting samples
of live animals. They are being caught in traps and are released at the place where they were captured after a small genetic sample has been taken. The samples are then examined by the departments of biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology and genetics at the University of La Laguna (ULL). The aim
is to find out how the giant lizards of Tenerife differ from the specimens of other islands and to what extent the remaining populations are related to each other. The aim is to strengthen the existing population in Tenerife and to ensure the survival of the species threatened with n extinction.

refinery.” He announced that CEPSA will “continue to provide energy to the archipelago and meet its obligations to employees, customers and the sole shareholder”. He emphasised that investments will be made in the technologi-
cal park and future concepts with renewable energy sources are being studied. Island president Carlos Alonso said that “Santa Cruz Verde 2030 is a big dream for the city's inhabitants, which makes it possible for the city to become greener, friendlier and more open to the sea. The concept will help to increase technological development and sustainable mobility in the city.” Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo stressed “Santa Cruz is becoming a role model in Spain and internationally. I don't think there is an example in the whole world of the recovery of urban land of this size.” He also announced that both the Canary Islands Government and the Santa Cruz Council will assist in the development and implementation of the plans. The University of La Laguna and its experts will also be an integral part of the reclaman tion of the site.

Alternative transport study
Traffic relief for south motorway chaos? The Tenerife Island Council via Metrotenerife is to study alternative solutions to the regular traffic chaos between San Isidro and Adeje on the TF-1 south motorway. A total of €386,066 from the Ministry of Development's budget has been made available for information, to be gathered in around eight months, on how the permanent congestion of this section of the motorway can be brought under control. It is crucial that the analysis takes into account many different criteria, such as sustainability, efficiency, functionality, demand and investment volume, and considers various approaches to solutions. For example, the introduction of a flexible bus-VAO lane

A total of 25 works were submitted on the theme of ‘The Deep Sea’, and it is now up to the public to choose their favourite from the top 10. Votes can be cast until 9am on September 28, via the website www.carnavaldetenerife.com, and results will be announced on October 4. Each IP address will be registered and can only vote once. Moreover, the election is blind, so that no one can see beforehand which is currently the most popular among voters. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez called on the public to participate. It’s well known that the Canary Islands are home to diverse and extremely characteristic beaches, but it’s remarkable that four have made it into the top slot in a major holiday destination such as Spain. To reach it, however, one has to undertake a descent which takes about two and a half hours from Tasartico, but those brave enough are compensated
for their efforts upon reaching the beach described as being ‘at the end of the world’, with a view of the majestic peak of Mount Teide on the neighbouring island of Tenerife. This fourth island is also the location of the last mentioned beach, Playa Benijo at the foot of the Anaga massif. Calmer summer seas generally see more people daring to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the West or North African coasts, bringing immigration once again to the forefront of discussion, a subject on which Gran Canaria president Antonio Morales Méndez recently made a public statement. In mid-June alone, the Spanish Sea Rescue services picked up 1,290 people from boats in just one weekend, but not all of those making the desperate dash to relative safety are found. Even without the high waves of winter, such crossings are extremely dangerous, especially as the vessels used are small, usually overloaded, and the occupants are generally unable to swim. Many lives are lost, a situation which was recently highlighted when four survivors of a capsized boat in the Alborán Sea were found treading water. The four were taken to the Hospi-

Morales criticises current policy The president of Gran Canaria’s Island Council Antonio Morales Méndez recently spoke out to question the way the situation is being dealt with. "When we, like the Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, speak of ‘human flesh’ that we want to get rid of, we embark on a very dangerous verbal rhetoric", he stated, listing other areas of concern, including “fascist” factions in France, Holland, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Croatia and Germany, as well as the president of the USA, Donald Trump. Morales accused the EU of failing to fulfil its obligations, and declared the latest approach - of setting up closed control areas or refugee centres outside European territory - as “perilous and worrying”. In his fierce public statement, he also stated that many of the difficulties in the southern hemisphere are a consequence of continuous exploitation by multinational corporations and political concerns. Citing the numbers of Spanish and Canarian immigrants who have also fled hunger, danger and politi-
cal upheaval over the years to South America and beyond, he begged for greater compassion for those in need of help today.
Why are people on the move? Here, Morales also left no doubt about one of the main reasons for the current situation. "The latest data show that just one per cent of the population holds half of the world's wealth, while the other 99 per cent have to make do with the other half, a situation which is especially difficult for women and children. The political, financial, economic and military structures behind the present system reinforce the supremacy of a few and create growing inequality and injustice.” According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 1.2 billion people are living in extreme poverty, with less than one dollar a day. Over two billion do not have access to safe drinking water in the home, including 263 million people who have to walk for over 30 minutes a day to collect any type of water. Horrifically, almost one billion are experiencing severe hunger, whilst 4.5 billion lack safely managed sanitation. Basically, over half of the world's population does not have enough food, access to drinking water, health care and/or education. In addition, it is estimated that 400 million children in African, South American and Asian countries are suffering right now due to slavery, war and violence.
Wrong response For Morales, the 28 EU countries are not only not doing enough to counteract the situation, he insists they are violating international agreements on refugees, which they themselves have adopted on various occasions. He considers the current path of exclusion to be particularly dangerous, calling instead for education, integration, social justice, dignity, human rights, political responsibility, solidarity and a common strategy for development work. Amnesty International has also described the present “Us versus Them” approach as contemptuous, an attitude that spreads blame, hatred and fear in a way that has not been seen since the 1930s, dehumanising entire groups of people. Barring no holds, Morales referred to the words of the Bulgarian-French philosopher, historian and sociologist Tzvetan Todorov, who died in 2017: “How we perceive and welcome others who are different from ourselves is a measure of our degree of barbarism or civilization. The barbarians are the ones who think that others, because they do not look like them, are inferior and deserve to be treated with contempt or condescension. To be civilized does not mean to have enjoyed a higher education or to have read many books or to be particularly wise: We all know that certain people who have those characteristics have been able to commit acts of perfect barn barism.”

Siam Park El Veril While Siam Park in Costa Adeje has proven itself a great success since its opening in 2008, work on its promised counterpart on Gran Canaria has stalled once again. Though the stabilisation of the canyon bed in El Veril is almost complete, and objections by environmental group Turcón-Ecologistas en Acción were rejected by the courts in late June, the project is still moving ahead at a snail’s pace. According to the developers, Loro Parque, the difficulties are primarily due to San Bartolomé de Tirajana council, which is constantly creating new stumbling blocks. Although the Loro Parque company has offered the council various guarantees, and both the Gran Canaria Island Council and Canary Islands Government are backing the project, the approval process continues to move slowly. A statement from Loro Parque explains that "The great aquar-

can process the approval. The conditions and laws are the same for all citizens". In contrary to the allegations which have flown the council’s way, the mayor accuses the clients of not cooperating sufficiently and of rejecting requested changes. Pérez also criticised the Loro Parque company’s attempt to bring the dispute to the public, and added that "Anyone can say whatsoever they wish, but we ask that statements be responsible and correct, so as not to create social confusion and to prevent this project, which is of enormous touristic and economic interest to Maspalomas and Gran Canaria, from being politicised. This is not good for the water park". Viewed from the outside, it seems the project is currently stalled due to a certain stubbornness on two fronts. In order to get it moving again, compromise may well be needed on n both sides.

Lago Martiánez opens again In a record time of only 49 days, urgently needed repairs were carried out in May and June at the Lago Martiánez bathing complex in Puerto de La Cruz, originally created by famous Lanzarote artist and architect César Manrique. Much of the work concentrated on pipelines and in the basin area of the artificial lake. The ravages of time had gnawed away at them and
caused clear signs of decay. Initially, the renovation was scheduled to take three to six months, but that would have extended too far into the season. Mayor Lope Afonso was visibly satisfied with the conclusion of the repairs, and stated that "This complex is one of the most important tourist attractions in our city. We are very pleased that the work has progressed so quickly
in view of the beginning of the summer." Parallel to the main efforts, the time was also used to carry out other repairs across the entire site. Basins were repainted, palms trimmed, trees and bushes pruned, and flowers planted. Lago Martiánez was reopened at the end of June, so nothing now stands in the way of bathing pleasure during the n warm weather.

Even whilst protests continue over the conditional release of five men dubbed ‘la Manada’ (the Pack), who gang-raped a young woman two years ago in Pamplona, Spain, a frightening new incident in one of the main tourist centres on Gran Canaria has taken place. Mirroring the previous attack, five men, one of whom a minor,
apparently drugged and raped a 16 year old girl in Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, at the end of June. The accused, aged between 15 and 24, also recorded the brutal act on their mobile phones, calling themselves the ‘new pack’. The youngest of those being investigated has been interned in a youth facility, whilst the
others were released without bail after 48 hours, to await trial. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. Unfortunately, these imitators are not an isolated case. At about the same time, a mass rape is also said to have taken place at the exit of a discotheque in the Molins de Rei district of Barcelona. Six
Supposedly to protect more potential victims, social network users have posted the names and personal accounts of the alleged rapists on Facebook and Instagram, leading to their profiles being showered with hostility, abuse and death threats from other users. More than 3,000 comments were received, leading to at least one of them closing his accounts to avoid the verbal attacks. While understanding the public's anger about the case, such reactions should be avoided as they in turn can lead to further, and often unjustified, attacks. It is hoped that the Spanish judiciary, however, will begin making appropriate judgements n in the cases of rape.

Hammerhead hunting for pleasure? The Guardia Civil in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, recently reported the owner of a leisure yacht in Lanzarote, who had advertised hammerhead shark fishing excursions via social networks. Hammerhead sharks are classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as ‘endangered to severely endangered’, so hunting them is strictly forbidden. A member of the public discovered the announcement posted on the internet by the boat owner and informed the police. As a result, the Guardia Civil searched for the 8.6m long recreational yacht and were able to locate it. A complaint against the owner was filed for violation of the fishing ban on endangered species, in accordance with the applicable laws in the Canary Islands. Fines of between €301 and €60,000 can be imposed. A report was sent to the Canary Islands Government for processing. As hammerhead sharks live in the waters surrounding the archipelago, divers occasionally have encounters with them, as they like to be near the coast. These meetings are mostly harmless as the animals are generally shy and unaggressive towards humans. Conversely, however, the greatest danger for hammerhead sharks comes from man. For instance, in Asia many types of sharks are hunted for their fins for the famous shark fin soup. In other waters they are often killed or seriously injured as by-catches. Fishing with driftnets in particular is endangering their populations. In Spain the hunting of these sharks is forbidden. n

The wettest summer party of the year The fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen is celebrated in the Canary Islands on July 16 and above all in places linked to the sea. Patron Saint to fishermen and sailors, she is said to bring the men and women going out into the Atlantic safely back ashore and the fiesta is celebrated in almost all fishing villages and towns in the Canary Islands in July, although in Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife it takes place in September. As her figure is closely connected to the water, the processions often end in a boat trip around the harbour for the image of the Madonna, as well as a lot of fun in and out of the water for the faithful and festival visitors. Although the fiesta is officially on July 16, the celebrations take place on different days
around this date, depending on the location. The Fiesta del Carmen in Puerto de La Cruz, which has already been celebrated there on July 10 in a humid and cheerful atmosphere, is particularly well known and a magnet for thousands of spectators. The next highlight of the July festival there is the first fashion and handicraft fair, which takes place from July 20 to 22 from 10am to 10pm in Avenida Colón. Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz is also closely connected to the sea. This great event is therefore celebrated as a festival of cohesion and fraternity among seafarers, and also in association with all the city's inhabitants and visitors. On July 16, at 6pm, a mass will will be celebrated, accompanied by the mixed Círculo de Amistad XII de Enero choir, conducted by Salvador Rojas. Their interpretation of the Canto de la Salve may well give you goose bumps. Afterwards, the image of the patron saint will be carried from the church via the Avenida Marítima to the harbour and taken out to sea. The harbour itself is the scene of various sporting competitions on this day. On July 14, a one-kilometre swimming competition will also be held in the open sea. The starting shot will be fired at 10.45am at the pier. The proceeds from this event will go to the Amate charity association, which helps women suffering from breast cancer. This year's 'Chicharro's Fest' on July 21 is a novelty, offering a wide range of leisure activities and gastronomic delights in the vicinity of the Valleseco coastline. In Los Realejos, the festival is also celebrated on July 16. The last Eucharistic celebration followed by a procession takes place at 7pm. On July 20, the Princesa del Mar (Princess of the Sea) will be elected in Los Realejos and on July 28, from 7pm, the festival of wine and potatoes (Gran Fiesta de Vinos y Papas) begins. Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo visited the prototype of a marine wind turbine between Telde and Las Palmas at the end of June. It’s the 23 square kilometre Canary Ocean Platform (PLOCAN) which is a research centre and is scheduled to enter into operation this month. It has a capacity of five megawatts and the floating platform is constructed in such a way that it’s towed into place and then anchored. The big advantage of this system is that the installation is minimally invasive. The prototype was developed in cooperation with the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and the project was partly financed by the European Horizonte 2020 Fund. The companies involved are Esteyco Energía, Siemens Gamesa, Ale HeavyLift and ewi-UL. Clavijo announced “This prototype is a clear example of the Canary Island Government’s commitment to renewable energy”. The Councillor for Economy, Industry, Trade and Knowledge, Pedro Ortega, announced during the tour that work on a second prototype of the floating wind turbine is already underway. For him, this project is a major step towards a clean energy supply. He explained “This will allow the Islands to consolidate themselves as a research and test laboratory which can attract further investments in renewable energies and promote the internationalisan tion of the Canarian economy”.

If you have an idea for improving the conservation status of endangered animals, the Loro Parque Foundation wants to hear from you before August 15. This international non-profit institution, whose main sponsor is Loro Parque, supports projects that focus primarily on parrots and marine animals, with the particular aim of improving the conservation status of endangered species. In addition, through its activity, it also promotes the preservation of their habitats and of biodiversity in general. Thanks to the fact that the Parque covers all the expenses of the Foundation, 100 per cent of all donations are used for environmental protection. Over the years, more than 150 projects have been carried out with their support. For 2019, they have earmarked a million dollars to distribute among the winning projects to be selected by a committee of independent experts.

Angelsharks: In a plan cofinanced by Loro Parque Foundation, Poema del Mar is collaborating with outreach work in another project in Sardina del Norte, Gran Canaria, to protect this species. Continuous monitoring seeks to contribute to the conservation of the angelsharks. Brazil’s Lear’s Macaw: Four examples were entrusted to the Foundation in Tenerife by the Brazilian government and after just a few months they had reproduced to over thirty specimens. The first nine birds have already been sent to their country of origin to begin the complete recovery of this species in its natural environment.

dation has managed to save a total of nine parrot species from total extinction. The change of threat category in many of these nine species is a worldwide environmental conservation success that makes this non-profit organisation the

In the choreography, great importance is attached to presenting the great hits as faithfully as possible to the original versions. Nine dancers, great voices, actors and the best Michael Jackson double will inspire the fans with a live show. The Spanish fan community, Club de Fans de Michael Jackson en España, considers this show to be the best tribute to the King of Pop. The ensemble will perform at the Juan Ramón Jiménez Theatre in Telde, Gran Canaria, on December 15. There will be two performances at 6.30pm and 9.30pm. Apart from manning their shop in Coral Mar in Costa del Silencio, members have been busy liaising with the Hermanos Franciscanos de Cruz Blanca in Las Chafiras, or White Fathers as they tend to be known in English, about the purchase of a much needed shower bed, used for people who are unable to sit or stand whilst showering. The centre’s old one was rusty and unsafe, but at nearly €2,500 the funds weren’t available for a replacement. Happily, thanks to the intervention of the Lions, they now have a brand new one, which was put to immediate use. The centre looks after about 30 males with mental and physical disabilities who do not have any family to care for them. It’s a beautiful place with lots going on to stimulate the residents, including days out and BBQ’s in the grounds. The staff, some of whom are paid and some volunteers, do an outstanding job in making the lives of the gents a little more enjoyable.

Little boxes of love The Lions’ new Little Boxes of Love project saw them deliver 20 or so shoe boxes to the ‘Soup Kitchen’, as it is known in El Fraile. These are boxes filled with everyday items that most of us take for granted, such as toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, shower gel, combs, hairbrushes, razors,
shaving foam and other toiletries, which are handed out to those that most need them via the Soup Kitchen staff. Everyone can help fill the boxes by adding just a few extra items into their shopping trolley and
dropping them to the collection points in The Clouds Pool Bar at the Heights, and Pablos II in Los Cristianos, or at the Lions shop in Costa del Silencio. Any bar or restaurant owners who would be happy to provide a further collection point can contact the organisation’s president, Ericka, via the details below. First and foremost is the culling of the Fairy Crassula (Crassula multicava), the Lily of the Valley Vine (Salpichroa origanifo-
lia), a member of the sunflower family, (Pluchea ovalis) and Red Valerian (Centranthus ruber). It’s important to stop these uninvited guests, which have mostly come to the island via ornamental gardens, multiplied and spread, in order to preserve the characteristic Canarian flora. Work began in May and will continue until n the end of the year.

Siam Nights have already proved to be a great success in previous years, and now that the warm summer nights have returned, they are back, to the delight of thousands of young people and their enthusiastic families. During the months of July and August, under the moonlight, Siam Park opens its doors on Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm to midnight to make the water rides accessible at night.
There is a magical atmosphere with the mild temperatures and the adrenaline kicks on the daring water slides. Beneath the starlight, the most adventurous can try the spectacular nature of 'Singha', the fastest and most impressive roller coaster ride on the planet. With a water course of more than 240 metres and 14 changes of direction, it’s a pioneering attraction, never before seen at other water parks. You also
won't want to miss the 'Tower of Power', which is 28 metres high and has an almost vertical slope that gives the impression of free-fall. There is also a place for relaxation for all the family at Siam Beach, the most paradisiacal beach in the Canary Islands, which has the largest artificial waves in the world. There, you can be entertained by a DJ and enjoy a buffet on the white sandy beach in the chill-out
area. Alternatively, you could try a trip along the slow tropical Mai Thai River, which crosses the heart of the Park and gently and almost imperceptibly lifts the visitor to a height of eight metres, offering the most beautiful views of its waterfalls, lush gardens and a spectacular aquarium. Football fight ends in stabbing A 50-year-old German man was stabbed by his 58-year-old Spanish friend on the Sunday that Spain lost to the Russians in the last 16 of the World Cup. Both had watched the football match in a bar at Tabaiba in
the borough of El Rosario and had apparently imbibed plenty of alcohol. At around 8pm, it seems that they became embroiled in such a fierce fight that the German smashed a bottle over his friend's skull. The
Spanish man is said to have gone to his apartment and returned a little later armed with two knives, stabbing his longtime friend's throat, arms and legs several times, injuring him severely. Ambulance staff suc-
ceeded in stabilising the man at the scene, after which he was taken to the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz. His ‘friendly’ assailant has now been charged with n assault and battery.
National Police from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria recently arrested two males, aged 24 and 26 years old, for stealing a coffin. A local resident had apparently watched the men remove the coffin as well as a case for the aesthetic presentation of the dead from a hearse which was parked near his apartment. He informed the police and a short time later a patrol was able to locate the residence of the first suspect, who apparently admitted to stealing the items, said to be worth €1,500. As they were hidden in his apartment, the accused voluntarily turned over the coffin and case to the police. These were returned to the funeral employee from whose vehicle they had been stolen, who discovered various types of damage to the items. Meanwhile, the second apparent perpetrator had shown up with a female friend at the house of the resident who had called the police, threatening him with knives and calling him an “informer”. This incident was also reported to the police, who had a lucky break as they were searching for the suspect. A few hours after the threats were made, officers received a report regarding an individual who was indiscriminately smashing up cars in the same part of the city. Rushing to the scene, they discovered the very man they were looking for, said to have been in possession of three knives, with blades of 19, 22 and 23 centimetres long. Both of the men involved in the case are already known n to the police.

Coastal cleaning action On the first Sunday in July, residents of the borough of Santiago del Teide undertook a major clean-up operation on the coast of Puerto de Santiago. Volunteers on land and hobby and professional divers, in cooperation with the volunteer fire brigade and civil protection, joined together to gather up a huge amount of garbage. From the bottom of the sea they lifted everyday objects such as shoes, goggles, bottles and cans, as well as more unusual items such as truck tyres. Deputy Mayor of the area, Ibrahim Forte, thanked all those involved for their efforts and called on residents and visitors to become more environmentally conscious near the ocean. “Protecting our sea is fundamental to preserving our quality of life and that of future generations”, he said. In appreciation of their efforts, all helpers were invited to a communal lunch. Activities like these take place during the summer months not only in Santiago del Teide, but in many seaside resorts across the Islands. Not only are they effective for obvious reasons, but can be a great opportunity for visitors to beaches to see for themselves how much waste is flooding the ocean, contributing to raising awareness of the problem and, hopefully, encouraging people to n reduce the amount of rubbish they leave behind.

Dolphin Man - reminder of a diving legend
Rolling in the deep To what depth can you dive on only one breath? A fascinating movie tells the story of the extraordinary apnea diver Jacques Mayol. The Frenchman grew up as the son of an architect in Shanghai, where he was born on April 1, 1927. During the summer holidays in Japan he saw a dolphin for the first time and watched the Ama women diving for oysters in apnea mode. As a professional diver in an aquarium in Miami, he learned a lot from the dolphins he dealt with. There, a dolphin called Clown was a special role model for him, of how one could move better under water. He was soon moved by the question of how long a person could stay underwater without breathing. He also thought about how much of the dolphin is still in the genetics of human beings, which developed out of the ocean themselves. For him, apnea diving became his passion, which he refined to perfection, integrating Zen and Yoga techniques into his diving style. On November 23, 1976, he was the first diver to reach a depth of 100 metres without breathing apparatus. Throughout his life he held several world records in apnea diving and inspired Luc Besson to make the film Big Blue. In the 1990s he found a friend in the worldclass apnea diver Umberto Pelizzari. For Pelizzari, Mayol was a great role model who spurred him on to top performances. In 1996, he dived down to 131 metres in 3.32 minutes without a breathing apparatus. The film Dolphin Man takes the audience into his fascinating underwater world and accompanies man into the depths of the ocean. Throughout his life, Mayol advocated greater environmental protection and published his biography, The Dolphin Within Man in the year 2000. Mayol took his own life on December 22, 2001 in Capoliveri on the island of Elba, after a depressive phase. In his memory, a monument was sunk to a depth of 15 metres southeast of Elba, the island where he had lived for 30 years. There the Dolphin Man has symbolically found his final resting place. In the Canary Islands, the film is being shown on different days: July 17 at 8.30pm at the Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas, July 19 at 8.30pm at the Multicines in La Laguna, July 25 at 8.30pm at the Auditorio Insular in Puerto del Rosario, on July 30 at 8pm at the Cine Chico in Santa Cruz de La Palma and on July 31 at 8pm at the Casa de la Cultura in Los Llanos de Aridane. n

Forest fire danger! During the summer and through until the end of November there is an increased risk of forest fires in the Canary Islands, meaning that special care is required in the forests and areas close to them. Don’t carelessly throw away lit cigarette butts, leave bottles in the forest which, in combination with the sun, can become fire-starters, drive on remote forest paths nor use equipment that generates sparks, such as welding machines or similar when working on fincas. It should go without saying that the time when plant waste may be burned in the garden or on the farm is now also over, unless you have the correct authorities present. Despite all the warnings, too often there are serious forest fires every year in the Canary Islands. In most cases they are triggered by carelessness. If this is combined with favourable meteorological conditions, such as high temperatures and violent gusts of wind, the scenario for a disaster is perfect and because of the rough, rugged terrain, the fire-fighting work is usually very difficult. Everyone who is thinking of going into the forest should be aware of the possible dangers. The warnings about the risk of forest fires should be taken seriously. If you have a house near the forest, the best way to protect it is to keep a strip about three metres wide around the house plant-free as a fire-break. In La Gomera, the Island councillor for emergencies and civil protection, Pedro Manuel Morales has announced that at several recreational areas within the National Park, the barbecue areas are closed and

open fires are prohibited. These places are popular with Canarian families for celebrations or to sit together on weekends. Their use itself is not forbidden in the summer, but it may be necessary to rethink your menu choice. Similar measures are being taken on the other islands. In La Palma, some 50 civil protection, fire brigade and
Island Council personnel have recently been prepared for correct response in the event of a forest fire, especially if they are unlucky enough to fall into a trap and become surrounded by the flames. This is a scenario that can happen, as due to the rugged terrain, wind direction can change often in the Canary Islands and has already cost the lives of
several firefighters. The better prepared the employees are, the more automatically protective reactions take place when they are needed. In the theoretical and practical training, the emergency forces were prepared for various emergency situations and given protection options, which they then practiced in La Caldera n National Park.

Falling tourism figures for summer?
Seeking quality and quantity
Constant adjustments with regard to quality and sustainability across all areas can make a small but important difference for holidaymakers
The Canary Islands have undoubtedly enjoyed a boost to tourism during the crises in other classic holiday destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt, though times may be changing. Safety concerns in other areas led to continuous growth rates on the Islands in recent years, culminating in a peak of almost 16 million visitors in 2017. Tenerife alone recorded around 5.7 million tourists during those 12 months. However, now that the three destinations mentioned above have returned to the holiday market, the figures for the Canary Islands seem to be declining. Ashotel, the
hotel and holiday association for the province of Tenerife, announced the forecast for the summer recently, starting with expected numbers for the south of the island being approximately five points below the previous year, at 85 per cent occupancy. In the north, occupancy is expected to be 77 per cent (down eight per cent) and 61 per cent (down two per cent) in the metropolises of La Laguna and Santa Cruz. However, summer is not the only high season on the archipelago, and Canarians also like to visit other islands in summer, often making their holiday decisions at the last minute, so figures can still change.
The downward trend isn’t being observed in La Palma. With an occupancy rate of 85 per cent during 2017, as many as 92 per cent are expected this year. However, this is partly due to the fact that the Sol La Palma hotel, which has around 1,000 beds, is closed for renovations, which increases the occupancy rate of other hotels on the island. In addition, the new 75 per cent discounts for travel between the islands are making a noticeable difference, stimulating tourism figures amongst residents. La Gomera is also benefiting from interisland travel and is expecting an occupancy rate of around 88 per cent (up two per cent)
in summer and as much as 91 per cent in August. El Hierro is anticipating a 71 per cent occupancy rate. However, Carlos DĂez de la Lastra, director of the only Swiss luxury hotel school in Spain, Les Roches Marbella, says that "Although the figures are generally declining slightly, this was to be expected and is therefore no cause for concern", though he considers that there are two major goals still to be achieved in the Canary Islands: modernisation of hotels and training of personnel. "We need to think about defining our position and Canarias tourist brand across all areas. We had some excellent years because we bene-
fited in part from conflicts in competitive countries and now the time has come to decide what role we want to play in the international tourism market in the future", the expert points out. Much has already been done, but there is a long way to go. His motto for mastering the future is not to rest, but to constantly develop further, including in sustainability, high standards, and good service. "The Canary Islands have a great advantage with which they can score well and that is safety, but they also have an Achilles heel and that is the lack of training of the personnel", he warns. This needs to be worked on in order to
provide the best possible service. After all, four out of ten people in the Canary Islands work in tourism. Especially in these times of easy access to the Internet, where comments and opinions are posted continuously, it is important not to give guests any reason for criticism. "The tourist is a customer who makes ever higher demands. A high-quality service provided by professional employees can make the difference in the future. This includes renovated and sustainable facilities. Tourism based on a price war without offering quality at the same time will end up losing out", n he states.

There has never been more choice for what Britons can do with their pension. Whilst this freedom is generally welcome, British police revealed £43 million was lost to pension scams between 2014 and 2017. Scammers look for opportunities to access pension funds, most commonly through transfers. ‘Defined Benefit’ or ‘Final Salary’ UK pensions are particularly lucrative, as today’s unusually high transfer values can represent hundreds of thousands of pounds. Transfers to Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) are also targeted. For many British expatriates, a QROPS is a suitable way to unlock tax, estate planning and currency benefits. There can genuinely be significant advantages in transferring UK pensions, but you should take extreme care to do what is right for you while avoiding scams. It’s crucial to explore

Connoisseurs are recommending sea aged wine
The research prompted them to design and manufacture large land-based tanks that are filled with purified Atlantic sea water and programmed to identically simulate the temperature and motion experienced in the open ocean. This process is possibly more controlled and reliable than the alternative and allows for the wine to be perfectly sea-aged at a fraction of the price. The process has gone down especially well in America because The Federal Government has banned sea aged wine unless it is aged in the patented tanks, due to health risks associated with sea water seepage caused
when seals are damaged by water pressure. So, what did the experts say? What was the Sommeliers’ verdict when they tasted the wine that had been sea aged in a tank? Thamar Kolsteren was happy to take on the challenge. Thamar is certified by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust and works for Casa del Vino in Alicante, Spain. The following is her report. “The difference in flavour and aroma between the non-sea aged wine and the sea aged wine are tremendous. Without even swirling the glasses, the aromas that come from the sea aged wine are quite intense and
remind me of leather, tobacco and mature red fruits. When I started swirling the wine glasses to provoke the tertiary aromas (those coming from the time the wine spends in oak barrels) to express themselves faster, the difference was even bigger. The sea aged wine has a very pleasant and intense bouquet; red berries, spices like black pepper, vanilla… The flavour when I tasted it was also different. I found it more intense, with a longer finish and round and soft tannins. The non-sea aged wine did not have the same intensity and flavour. I was pleasantly surprised, as was the whole Casa del Vino team”. The Loro Parque Company has received the gratifying news that their Brunelli’s Steakhouse in Puerto de La Cruz has been voted the best meat restaurant in Tenerife according to TripAdvisor contributors. Brunelli’s Steakhouse, which is coming up to its third anniversary (next September), is celebrating. Thanks to its passion for the best quality meat, the restaurant has managed to establish itself as the best meat restaurant in Tenerife on the prestigious travel website TripAdvisor, and has received a magnificent review in the gastronomy section of Metrópoli, a supplement of the newspaper El Mundo, which affirms that the steakhouse is “the benchmark for great meat in the Canary Islands”. TripAdvisor’s own customers and users have given it this privileged position at the top of the list of the 10 best meat restaurants in Tenerife, with reviews that applaud “spectacular attention and meat”, “exquisite food, excellent meat and the perfect spot” or “the best views one can imagine”, thanks to the huge window, which can be raised to turn the dining area into an open-air terrace. Non-meat eaters are, of course, also catered for, but this award confirms Brunelli’s Steakhouse’s position as the meat lovers’ favourite restaurant, serving the best cuts and offering their star dish - premium Galician beef, matured for 45 days. Unique starters and side dishes, and the best wines and desserts, put the finishing touches to a gourmet proposal that carries, without a doubt, the quality seal that the Loro Parque Company is famous for. The gastronomy review in Metrópoli also recently praised Brunelli’s, describing it as a “beautiful place on the seafront, or rather on the sea, thanks to the operating action of an amazing window” in which “large pieces of meat from Spain and the world are cut directly from whole carcasses that they dry-mature in their own chamber and then cook in the roaring American Southbend oven, capable of reaching 800ºC to achieve immediate sealing of the pieces in just a few seconds and maintain their insides juicy”. In 2010, the discovery of 168 Champagne bottles aboard a 19th century shipwreck rekindled interest in the process. It’s believed that the oceanic factors of consistent temperature, lack of light, relative lack of oxygen and movement from tides have a hugely positive impact on the finished product. One truly innovative company considered all of these factors, including the expenditure of sinking the wine into the sea and the resulting cost to the consumer. They wanted all the benefits of the sea aged wines’ bouquet and taste without the end cost.

Acción del Sol We have so many Canarian podencos in the refuge, around 80 in fact, many arriving in awful conditions, many just abandoned when they are of no use to their owners. They make lovely pets with their gentle nature. We would like to remind you all that it is obligatory to have your dog micro-chipped and registered at your local town hall. It makes our job much harder to contact the owner of a dog if it arrives at our refuge without a chip and it can cause your dog a lot of unnecessary stress. With more than 230 dogs looking for new loving homes please do come and visit us to see if maybe one is for you. We do not charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, microchipped, heartworm and flea free, passported and sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife. How you can help We are often asked how people can help. We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs travel by flight to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated.

Cats Welfare All of our cats go on a week’s trial in your home so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together then kitten injection, micro chip and neutering is free for the second one. Adopt a black kitten or two and both will receive the above treatments for free.
The lovely Nyssa, pictured here, was dumped in our fenced area over the road last week, despite there being a warning sign saying the area contains aggressive dogs. Thankfully, the other dogs didn’t harm her, but the poor thing was terrified. It took several attempts all morning to gain her trust so that we could move her from the corner of the fenced area into a comfortable kennel over the road. Once we saw her more closely, she was clearly used for breeding as her nipples are very large and deformed. She was absolutely covered in fleas so we made the immediate decision to bath her with anti-parasite shampoo in an attempt to make her more comfortable. The water ran red from the amount of flea dust on her skin. In addition to this, she had developed several lesions on her legs and back end, from constantly sitting and lying on a hard surface. She was also starving and practically skin and bones.
Summer heat
Keep your dogs safe Summer seems to have finally arrived, along with all its dangers for pets. Surfaces such as pavements, asphalt and sand get incredibly hot and can easily burn paws, so try to walk your dog in the morning or evenings to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Even more importantly, please remember to never leave a dog in a parked car. Temperatures in a vehicle can reach over 66°C in a very short time, resulting in heat stroke or death very quickly. Leaving a window partly open will not reduce the rise in heat anywhere near enough to save lives or reduce stress to your beloved pet. One of the first signs of heat stroke is rapid panting, shortly followed by twitching muscles, hot skin and /or a dazed look. Veterinary assistance must be sought immediately, but you can first help cool them down by applying chilled (not cold) water, ice packs or cool towels to the dog’s chest, neck and head areas (not anywhere else). You can also give them sips of cool water or a few licks of ice cubes. Never be afraid to Never let your dog suffer in a call the police if you see a parked car over summer – it can n lead to heatstroke and even death dog in a car suffering.
It was clear that she had been used and abused and then thrown out like rubbish. Nevertheless, she is now in good hands, and once we alleviated her of the pesky fleas and dirt, we could already see a difference in her behaviour. It has only been a short time since she arrived and she is already very different. Slowly but surely she is gaining confidence and now even wags her tail every now and then. Edu swims to the World Championships Step by step, competition by competition, athlete Edu Blasco Álvarez from Fuerteventura is swimming to the top of the world. With one victory after another, he leaves no doubt that he wants to compete for medals at the World Rescue Championships in Australia which will be held in Adelaide in November. He took another step in this direction at
the end of June at the Orange Cup in Eindhoven, Netherlands, where he took gold in the 50 metres towing, with a time of under 29.95 seconds in a three metre deep basin, a result that only a few have achieved so far. On top of that, he won the silver medal in the 100 metres combination with a time of 1:03.41 minutes. He came in behind Francesco Ippolito from Italy
who achieved a time of 1:02.14 minutes, only a fraction of a second ahead of Edu. With these victory times, Edu Blasco left no doubt that he is one of the five best lifeguards in the world. Summer is here and in July alone, the Majorero will be taking part in other championships to prove his class. On the agenda are the Spanish fin rescue championships

Acro Flyers recently took part in the Spanish championships which were held at Vigo in Galicia, northern Spain in mid-June and they have every reason to celebrate because their Mixed Cadete Base pair Juan Jesús Alonso and Yaiza Hernández were proclaimed Spanish champions in their category and awarded the coveted gold medal. This is in addition to last year’s successes when the team competed in the Madrid Open and also brought several
medals home with them. Their ambition is to continue representing the Canaries in the national championships. They intend to take part again next year, however the only financial support they currently have comes from the members’ parents. Ideally they need spon-

Goalkeeping training with Noelia Ramos In early July, young goalkeepers between the ages of 10 and 18 years old had the opportunity to train with the top in women’s football, with the winner of the golden glove as the best goalkeeper at the Sub 17 World Cup which took place in Jordan. For four days Noelia Ramos from Tenerife trained with the young talents at Agulo in La Gomera. She gave tips,
practiced special techniques and told them about her experiences with the Spanish national team. Above all, however, she emphasised the importance of sportsmanship and fun in the game. Since she started playing football at the age of seven, she has not let go of this sport. She started out as a striker, but then discovered that being a goalie was her real strength.
The Lanzarote Island president, Pedro San Ginés, accompanied by the councillor for sports, Patricia Pérez, recently met with the physically challenged swimmer Andrés Martín. The amazing Lanzarote swimmer has already won three Spanish championships in his sporting career. Recently he won the gold medal for the 200 metre backstroke at the Spanish Club Championships in Lloret de Mar, where he also won a silver medal for the 100 metre backstroke. In addition, he won the silver in the 50-metre relay race at the Integral Swimming Championship in Andalusia where the young Canarian studies sports science. In March, the 24-year-old won two gold medals at the Spanish Championships over distances of 100 and 200 metres. Pedro Gines congratulated the swimmer saying “Andrés is an example of how each and every person can reach their objectives, as much in sport as in life in general, with constancy, mental strength and the willingness to make sacrifices”. n

She made her debut aged 16 in the first division with the Granadilla team. In her first year she took part in the Copa de la Reina. Appointed to the national team, she was soon able to celebrate success. She was European Champion with the team in Iceland in 2015, together with her sister, who is also a footballer. Spanish Triathlon Championships The Canarian selection of triathletes who participated in the Spanish championships in the cadets’ category (15 to 16 years old) came exclusively from clubs in Lanzarote. Harry William Holdaway, Jorge Carlos Wilkes and Marco Antonio Night from Club Bayliss Multisport in Costa Teguise and Saúl Hernández Hernández from the CD Nonadamos in Arrecife were selected. Tiffany Eva Cabrera Robson of Bayliss Multisport is also part of the Canary Island team selection. The Lanzarote councillor for sports, Patricia Pérez, wished the young Lanzarote athletes much success. She explained “This participation in the Spanish Triathlon Championships reflects the high level of school and youth sports on the island and how deeply rooted the triathlon is in Lanzarote”. This strong connection with the triathlon tradition is because of the well-established Ironman Lanzarote championship, the 27th edition of which took place this year. This race is considered by athletes as the toughest triathlon in Europe and is also one of the most difficult races worldwide. The next competition will be held on May 25, 2019. Pre-season try-outs With the players now back at pre-season training, several friendlies have been arranged. The annual Mahou Cup game against UD Las Palmas will be held at Maspalomas in Gran Canaria this year on Saturday July 21. It’s a game that both managers wished did not take place as the words ‘friendly’ and ‘derby’ rarely mix well. With local rivalry at full pace recent pre-season games have ended up as a kicking match with players injured and the referee being forced on more than one occasion to suspend proceedings. Another stiff test for the blanquiazules will be in the Teide Trophy Final against Bundesliga opponents Mainz 05 on Saturday, August 11, in La Orotava. Meanwhile CD Tenerife Manager Etxeberria has stated publicly the importance of unity and a down to earth attitude in what will be a long, tough season. The good news for fans who travel to the Peninsula following the team is the new 75 per cent travel discount on flights. However, the negative part comes thanks to the Spanish league. Although last season saw a slight improvement match days and times are not confirmed until a few weeks before. Take your pick from Friday night, Saturday, Sunday or even the odd Monday night match may be possible and it means away trips can be difficult to plan and expensive. The newly formed CD Tenerife Fan Club for supporters living on the Peninsula will be running coaches from Madrid and Barcelona to several away games with everyone welcome to join them. Armada Sur, the fan club from the south of the island, are planning many away days this season, including Málaga, Las Palmas and La Coruña. n
