Winter season breakthrough

British Airways’ flight increases Airline British Airways has announced that it will increase its flight capacity between London and Tenerife’s southern airport significantly during the winter season. The number of weekly flights is now set to increase from eight to 13 between October 28 and March 31, on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from London Gatwick. President of the Island Council Carlos Alonso enthused that it was “excellent news, because this announcement also means that the number of places on offer in business class is increasing.” The island’s tourism representative, Alberto Bernabé, hailed it a success that came after intensive discussions. Visitors from Great Britain are Tenerife’s main market. Bernabé flew over to meet representatives of the travel industry in London and Manchester to question why demand had been falling since the end of last year. Among other reasons stated were the return of safer travel to holiday destinations such as Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia, as well as a reduction in flight capacity due to the failure of bankrupt airlines, and also the falling exchange rate of the British pound against the euro, which reduces purchasing power. But the tables seem to be turning again. “In summer we have a lot of competition in the European market, but in winter we expect a good season. Thomas Cook, Norwegian, TUI and Jet2 have already ordered an increase in their flight capacity for this winter. Good prospects for the last trimester of the year”, enthused Bernabé. Tenerife is the island of choice for many British visitors, with almost 43 per cent of them choosing the largest of the Canary Islands. In 2017, a total of 2,064,743 British holidaymakers spent their holidays in Tenerife, an increase of 0.8 per cent on the previous year. Yet, from January to May 2018, the proportion of British guests fell by almost five per cent, to 784,285 holidaymakers, compared to the same period in 2017. Nevertheless, the island has direct connections to 23 British airports for 2018 and this latest news means that airlines n are confident of the coming season.

Sand for the dunes

Gran Canaria Council is to undertake an ambitious and pioneering project to rescue eroded areas of the famous Maspalomas dunes. The ‘Masdunas’ scheme is the first of its kind to be attempted on dry dunes. Up to 60,000 cubic metres of sand will be reclaimed from beneath the sea at Punta de La Bajeta, and deposited at Playa del Inglés so natural wind patterns can replenish the dunes, with the aim of them regaining their former glory of the mid-1990s. Barriers will also be put into place to help stop the erosion. Estimated at €1.1 million, the project will also include the construction of 8km of paths to prevent damage to particularly sensitive ecosystems by pedestrians. In addition, native plants will be rejuvenated and reintroduced into various areas. Work is due to begin on October 1 and will take place at various intervals, most of it at night and times when there are the least holidaymakers in the area. After two years, the effectiveness of the measures will be reviewed and a decision taken on their continuation. The initiative also includes scientific monitoring, such as 16 oblique laser flights to produce in-depth 3D n images, ground measurements and video tracking.

Tech and trends success TLP Tenerife is a technology and new trends festival which is now the most important event of its kind in Spain. Celebrated in Santa Cruz’s Recinto Ferial congress hall between July 17 and 22, the festival brought together over 2,000 specialists in electronic sports, mangas, Korean pop music (K-Pop) and Cosplay, in which the participants slip into the roles of their video game stars – an elaborate hobby that devours a lot of time and money and, above all, requires a lot of creativity. "TLP Tenerife has become a true reference for technology and new trends, not only nationwide, but also on an international level. Like this time, when we celebrated the final of the University Esports Masters, with university teams from eleven different countries", commented Island President Carlos Alonso. The eleven teams in the final round of said ‘League of Legends’ were drawn from over 500 universi-

ties and 30,000 players. The winner was Turkey, who beat Portugal in an exciting final. Third place went to Poland after a victory over Great Britain. The three winners have thus secured their ticket to the Inter-University World Championship, which will be held in China. Winner of the Cosplay in the category Groups

TLP weekend events are also celebrated in communities outside the capital throughout the year. "Thanks to the initiatives of TLP Tenerife and Innova 7, important e-sport events are taking place in Tenerife, such as the League of Professional Video Games, the Orange Superleague or the Clash Royale Nations Club com-

petition, which will be held on July 29 at the Teatro Guimerá", Alonso added. Due to the positive response and success of TLP Tenerife this summer, the Island President announced another event of this size in the south of the island before the end n of this year.

Siam Park Best in the World - again

Water triumph! Simply the Best in the World

In the last week of July, the travel portal TripAdvisor gave Siam Park waterpark in Adeje the Best Waterpark in the

World Award, for the fifth time in a row. The Traveller’s Choice Awards are not decided by a jury, but

are based on the evaluation of visitors, who described it as a “spectacular” water attractions theme park. The Award

marks an unprecedented success which the Park’s management can look forward to receiving shortly before its 10th anniversary. Siam Park is the only park to have won this award so many times in a row, and also the only one to have received it since TripAdvisor inaugurated the waterparks category five years ago. And it’s not their only international recognition; Siam Park has also been honoured by other organisations, such as the leading publication and reference point in the assessment of theme parks Kirmes & Park Revue, which awarded it the European Star Award for best waterpark in Europe for the sixth consecutive year. This reiterated recognition is undoubtedly the result of the constant innovation and reinvestment of the Loro Parque Company in all its projects in its constant search for excel-

lence and on a management team perfecting the balance of that excellence with innovation and quality. Siam Park also adheres to a working philosophy that is totally respectful of the environment, using the latest technological developments in every area. Thus, the water that feeds the Park is part of a closed circuit that begins in the ocean, and the CO2=0 formula is applied, which means that mainly local products are used in the Park’s cafes and restaurants, thus minimising the carbon footprint associated with the transportation of imported products. This

commitment to the environment has earned Siam Park the Biosphere Park certificate from the UNESCOlinked Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR), accrediting its environmental conscientiousness, as well as the ISO 14000, ISO 9000 and EMAS certifications. This year, Siam Park promises surprises to mark its anniversary in the form of brand new attractions that will offer its visitors adrenaline and fun in equal parts, and will attract audiences of all ages, expanding even further a waterpark that its users have distinguished as the Best in the World. n

Triple fraud case

Work contract scam

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Guardia Civil officers recently arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of fraud, after he’d been reported in three separate cases. Apparently posing as an entrepreneur, he is said to have promised several people an employment contract if they would provide him with a high-quality brand mobile phone. As soon as the phone was handed over, however, he no longer answered the calls of the supposedly future employees. Since he used various different phone numbers and false identities, it took a great deal of investigative work to expose the supposed scammer. The man was already known to the police and has been charged with triple fraud. n

Perfect for digital nomads

‘Work & Play’ on Tenerife

More and more people around the world do not have a fixed location for work, and Tenerife authorities have every intention of cashing in on the travelling trend. Thanks to the Internet and tools such as laptops, many employees and entrepreneurs are taking advantage of being able to work from different places around the world. These so-called ‘digital nomads’ are now so prevalent that it is estimated, for example, that in the USA around 43 percent of the active population works in this manner, with only a good connection to a fast digital network being critical. Frank Sellingsloh, Managing Director of the FU International Academy Tenerife in Puerto de La Cruz, confirmed that this is one advantage that Tenerife has over many other parts of the world: the speed of the Internet. In fact, Tenerife is proving to be a great attraction for the new nomads, especially as there is an increasing number of co-working offices offering temporary desks or workstations for visitors. Andreas Fischer, head of the Tenerife Tourist Office, presented the new ‘Work & Play’ campaign at the recent TLP Tenerife 2018 technology event in Santa Cruz. The latest strategy of the ‘Tenerife 100% Life’ project, it aims to spread the word of the island’s attractions in a digital age. n

Starting difficulties may be over

Race track enters the next round When the foundation stone was laid for Tenerife's very own motorsport track, on August 29, 2016, everyone was hopeful that things would move forward quickly, only to be very disappointed. Italian companies Axia SRL and Onda Rossa S.L., represented by Axias CEO Riccardo Feretti, wanted to put the pedal to the metal so that international races could soon be held on the Tenerife circuit, but the plan, born with so much verve, soon came to a grinding halt. Blame has been firmly laid at the Italians’ feet, but the good news is that the Island Government will be sticking to its promise of ensuring the dream becomes a reality. Rebranded as the ‘Parque Internacional del Motor de Tenerife’, the track will benefit from a Government investment of €5 million by the end of this

year. Plans for rebooting the project have been underway since last October, when the Island Government commissioned an engineering office to confirm the plans still comply with current standards, and small adjustments have been made to ensure the future track complies with the regulations of the international automobile and motorcycle associations (FIA and FIM) for the highest level of competition. A first contract, worth almost €900,000, has been awarded to Gestur Tenerife S.A. for surveying and preparation work for, amongst other aspects, the creation of the north and south access roads and the construction of auxiliary buildings. Originally, a construction period of 21 months was planned, but now progress is based on the budget available to the Government. Origi-

Progress may be a little stop-start, but at some point the race will be on

nally, the cost of the project was estimated at €23.6 million. As soon as the track is ready for operation, a concessionaire will be sought on the understanding that the initial investment will be returned. The project will not only be of benefit to motor sports

enthusiasts but will open up a new visitor niche and attract regional, national and international races to the island with the relevant financial boost. In addition, the track is predestined as a perfect location for test series, especially in the n winter months.

Canarian-Saharan friendship

Holidays in peace For yet another year, youngsters from the Tinduf refugee camp on the western Algerian border have come to the Canary Islands to spend the holiday months of July and August here. The 143 boys and girls are being accommodated by

host families who provide for them and usually also buy them clothes or take them on excursions. The children also have access to health care and are vaccinated, examined and treated for any diseases. Children from this region are also taken in on the Spanish

Peninsula. The Vacaciones en Paz (Holidays in Peace) campaign was launched in 1976, based on the Spanish people's close solidarity with the former Spanish-occupied territories of the Western Sahara, which are now occupied by Morocco. Since the mid-1970s, an esti-

mated 116,000 people from the Western Sahara have been living in a refugee camp east of the city of Tinduf. The camp is located in a vast desert plain of the Sahara and is known as 'The Devil's Garden'. In summer temperatures of over 50 degrees Celsius are often reached and sandstorms interrupt everyday life. The holidays in peace campaign was created to take the children, at least in the hottest season, to a more temperate place and to give them an enjoyable break. Numerous aid organisations support the people who live in the camp, most of whom are self-governing. In the Canary Islands, too, there are often charity events during which donations, medicines, glasses, school or sports materials are collected for the Saharan refugees. Of the children who came to the Canary Islands this year, 61 were accepted into families in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote and 88 in Tenerife, La Palma, Fuerteventura and La Gomera. They are welcomed with open arms and pampered a little, at least for the summer. At the same time they practice their command of the Spanish language left over from the Spann ish occupation.

Playa de Las Teresitas is a hotspot for the city and the island

Playa de Las Teresitas

New concession On November 9, 1966, the coastal section now known as Playa de Las Teresitas, was first handed over to the Santa Cruz city council via a ministerial order. This paved the way for the creation of the dream beach, which today is an essential leisure magnet for residents and visitors of the city. The concession is now expiring and must be renewed. An application to this effect has been submitted to the coastal authorities by the city councillor for heritage, Juan José Martínez. It includes the existing areas of the beach, roads for traffic and paths for pedestrians as well as, for the first time, the integration of areas that may be necessary in the future and the responsibility for seasonal services. Martínez emphasised that “The Playa de Las Teresitas has a fundamental key function for the future social and economic development of Santa Cruz and the whole island. It’s not only a visitor attraction but also an important recreation area for the city’s inhabitants.” He also applied for the area of the fishing cooperative to be included in the concession. It’s important to maintain the presence of the fishermen who traditionally live in the San Andrés district. The concession will be in place for the next six decades. n

Fire brigade operations improved

In the event of a blaze in an urban area good equipment is essential

The president of the Tenerife Fire Department, Javier Rodríguez, announced recently that the island’s fire prevention, extinguishing and rescue department has ordered the purchase of three new vehicles for use in urban environments. The new equipment, which includes two pump trucks, is intended to increase the fire-fighting capacity of the fleet, especially during major operations in cities. Acquisition and improvement of equipment is one of the demands that fire fighters made during their last strike in the round of compromises with the Island Council. Rodríguez also announced further improvements to apparatus, an increase in staff and the establishment of a new fire station in the south of the island. n

Santa Cruz tax advantages Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz offers its inhabitants a great quality of life on many levels, and is now being highlighted as having another very special trait: it is the cheapest city in the Canary Islands from a taxation point of view. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and the city's councillor for taxation Juan José Martínez made this clear when they presented the new tax plans for 2019 shortly before the summer break, which included substantial tax cuts. Bermúdez announced that taxes for families and businesses will be reduced by around €2 million. In addition to the benefits which took effect in 2018, this represents savings of approximately €8.8 million. He explained: "We are in favour of a good tax policy without reducing expenditure on public services and investment in infrastructures. On the contrary, they have risen steadily and our own debt burden can be reduced to zero next year. Santa Cruz is turning into the most tax attractive city in the Canary Islands".

Far from slowing development in the city down, the tax advantages act as a stimulus for the economy, as they make the city even more attractive for companies, while the inhabitants have more purchasing power through good jobs and

Judgement reversed

Jail for Arafo grandfather, or not? In April of this year, an 83-year-old man was sentenced to four years in prison by a court in Santa Cruz but the judgement was recently overruled and a new case ordered, much to the delight of those campaigning for clemency. Jacinto Siverio, from Arafo, was jailed for two years because he shot and killed one of two burglars who entered his house and tortured his wife in March 2015, and the rest of the sentence for illegal possession of a weapon. However, the decision has now been overturned by the Canary Islands Supreme Court as it believes the case leading up to the jury’s verdict lacked due process. The Chief Justice ordered a further trial with a new jury and different presiding judge. The original indictment has aroused outrage amongst many, who consider the shooting to be justified selfdefence, especially as the accomplice of the deceased burglar admitted that not only would he have done the same as the elderly gentleman under the circumstances, but would have actually tried to kill both of the intruders. The would-be thieves evidently entered the house armed with a simulated weapon and a large baton. They repeatedly beat Siverio’s wife and sadistically tortured her by, for instance, holding her hand in a door frame and slamming the door onto it. In desperation, Siverio told the intruders that he would fetch them valuables from another room in the house if they left his wife alone. Instead, he retrieved a gun and fired two shots into the air. The second apparently ricocheted off a wall, hitting one of the burglars in the face and fatally injuring him. The senior lawyer is now calling for his client to be acquitted. A petition to the Ministry of Justice, launched via change.org on Siverio’s behalf, hopes to attract 100,000 signatures. n

Chair of Migration and Citizenship

University think tank

Fernando Clavijo (centre) is committed to cooperation between the Canary Islands Government and the ULL

Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo recently showed the government’s support for a leading initiative on migration which has been instigated by the La Laguna University (ULL).

In a meeting led by dean of the university, Antonio Martinón, Clavijo welcomed the creation of the new Chair for Migration and Citizenship in the Canary Islands, a group which will be headed by Car-

men Ascanio, a lecturer in anthropology and sociology, and Sami Naïr, a French political scientist. The president was particularly interested in the combined approach of using research,

education and social action to address an issue that is of great importance not only to the Canary Islands, but to the whole of Europe: migra-

tion - how to deal with it and how to improve integration. "Experience has shown that the solution is not to build the walls higher, but to promote integration and to cooperate politically across all boards", Clavijo emphasised, fully confident that the university group will analyse the situation “rigorously, seriously and with compassion”. Clavijo also promised financial support for the project, a commitment that was gladly accepted by Dean Martinón. The ULL representatives were also informed that the Canary Islands Government would be interested in developing joint projects, aiming for the archipelago to become one of the top research centres in Europe for managing migration. The ULL has already run various successful projects in the field, such as ‘Barrios por el

empleo’ (Neighbourhoods for employment), for the integration of immigrants into working life, as well as community ventures headed by the lecturer of geography and history, Vicente Zapata. Clavijo underlined that the search for positive solutions is not only interesting for the Canary Islands, highlighting his recent meeting with the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the Deputy Director General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission, Simón Mordue, in Brussels. Clavijo confirmed that there is a new awareness of the issue among the Community institutions and that budgetary resources are available for financing projects in this context. He thus held out the prospect that the ULL scheme could possibly benefit n from European funds.

Three fugitives arrested

The two fugitive Poles were found living in the south of Tenerife

National Police recently arrested three people in Tenerife who were wanted on international arrest warrants. The first case involved two Polish men aged 25 and 30 years old, who were wanted by the Polish authorities for over 300 cases of Internet fraud. Using fake email addresses, they had sold licences for

working with vehicle engines, without undertaking the necessary tests. They are said to have earned over €250,000 between 2013 and 2016. Enquiries by the Polish police force indicated that the two were probably living in the south of Tenerife. After joint investigations, they were finally located and taken into

custody for extradition. In a separate case, a third fugitive was wanted by the Portuguese authorities for drugs offences, on an arrest and extradition warrant issued by a court in Lisbon. The 55-year-old man, from Guinea Bissau, had been living in La Laguna for several years and working as n a framer.

La Orotava tragedy

Man kills wife and children A horrific mass murder and suicide of the apparent perpetrator have sent shockwaves through the community of La Orotava and the island of Tenerife. Events unfolded when the mother of a young woman called Paula Teresa became worried that her daughter's phone had not been answered for a few days. The matriarch lived next door to her offspring in Calle Cruz de los Martillos, and when there wasn’t any response from knocking on

the door either, she decided to call the police. Sadly, when officers arrived they found a gruesome scene in the house: The 32-year-old woman was lying dead in the marital bed and in each arm she held one of her daughters, three and five years old. The family dog was lying in front of the bed, also lifeless, and in the room next door the woman’s 45-year-old husband, Israel, had hanged himself. At first it was not clear whether it was a consensual

extended suicide or a case of domestic violence. According to the earliest reports, there were no signs of violence against the woman or children, and friends from Israel’s hometown Zamora declared that he “idolised his wife and children. He was a wonderful man, protective, peaceful and always smiling." Nevertheless, the autopsy report revealed that his wife at least was suffocated and their two daughters may have been poisoned. Four million views The urban dream beach Playa de Las Canteras makes Las Palmas a striking destination

The capital city of Gran Canaria has drawn attention to itself as a holiday destination with two targeted digital campaigns. The first was aimed at the national market, especially users from Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Galicia and the Balearic Islands, who are connected to Gran Canaria by direct flights. The banner with the slogan ‘Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where life takes place’ was clicked almost four million times and reached a visibility of almost 45 per cent. Photos of the Santa Ana Cathedral and the striking Las Canteras beach certainly arouse the desire for holidays in Gran Canaria’s capital.

The second campaign was aimed at the regional market. Here the festival for theatre, music and dance, ‘TEMUDAS’, took centre stage. This campaign reached about 800,000 Internet users and

obtained a visibility of almost 87 per cent. Las Palmas was especially recommended as a summer destination, combining culture, leisure activities and excellent gastronomy n with an urban flair.

The road remained closed to through traffic until evening The tragedy happened behind this façade at number 30

if they were sedated beforehand. Corresponding drugs had been found in the house and it would explain why there were no traces of resistance. However, the toxicological report will not be concluded for several weeks. So, what may have happened? Israel worked as a mechanic in the VI Helicopter Squadron based at Los Rodeos. He had worked in Iraq and Afghanistan and was awarded the Red Cross of Merit in 2009. His comrades also knew him as a good companion and a friendly person and were horrified at the news. In addition, it has been pointed out that Israel had no known post-traumatic disorders that required the supervision of a psychologist after the war missions. There had been nothing uncovered to date that indicates that anything

was wrong. Neighbours stated that, "There have been arguments sometimes, but that's normal in a marriage. Nothing out of the ordinary." Yet, in a suicide note found in the house, Israel mentioned private and financial problems, and that one of the girls was ill. A third child, Paula’s from a previous relationship, was not at home on the tragic day, but with his father on holiday. He may have survived, but now has a heavy burden to bear.

At the town hall in La Orotava, flags were set at halfmast and a minute's silence was observed. Mayor Francisco Linares described the tragedy as "the worst, roughest and brutish incident, which is very difficult to digest". Other institutions around the island also observed a minute's silence and condemned all forms of violence, especially domestic violence against women and n children.

Pedro Sánchez and the Socialist party support workers’ rights

Government youth changes

Labour reform The new Spanish President, socialist Pedro Sánchez, has announced to Congress a programme to combat youth unemployment in the coming months. Some reforms introduced by the previous government are to be reversed before the summer break. Sánchez explained "In our country there is a deep wound that an entire generation has had to face, an invisible wall, the wall of frustration. We have 'lost' hundreds of thousands of young people who have left Spain to take advantage of the professional opportunities abroad. Not only this, but also those who, at The young generation should have a new perspective in Spain

Santiago del Teide equality initiative

Rainbow benches In Santiago del Teide, two benches in front of the La Vigilia social centre in Puerto de Santiago have been painted in rainbow colours on the initiative of Noelia Beatriz González, the councillor for equal opportunities. The activity aims to raise the awareness of society on issues

such as equality of all people in the gay, lesbian, transsexual, bisexual and intersexual collective (LGTBI). The association Chrysallis, which works for transsexual children in the Canary Islands and fights to give them an identity card and a name that corresponds to their character, took part

the moment they entered the labour market, were fobbed off with unworthy salaries or had to accept jobs that had nothing to do with their training." Sánchez wants to counter this problem with targeted measures against youth unemployment. These include abolishing out-of-school internships and promoting training contracts. He also criticised the notoriously low wages in Spain, which are not explained by low productivity but by the poor negotiating position of the workers which was favoured by the previous government. He wants to raise the income level in Spain back to the pre-crisis period. The recent negotiations between employers and trade unions also went in this direction. He made assurances that before the end of July the general plan to fight against professional exploitation will be approved. This will take action against unjustified temporary contracts and exploitative part-time contracts. He also declared war on sham selfemployment fraud, illegal overtime exploitation, discrimination in the workplace on the basis of gender, origin or age and undeclared workers. Admitting that he could not revise the entire labour laws, as he lacks the necessary majority in Parliament to do so, Sánchez announced he wants to attack the most important parts of it, and they include the intended modification of Article 42 of the labour law. As a result, working conditions cannot be ignored if the worker is employed as a subcontractor. The abolition of paragraph 3 of Article 315 of the Criminal Code, which criminalises trade union freedom of association,

in the campaign and created the Trans Bench. The second bench, the LGTBI Bench, was designed by the Algarabía Association, which is generally committed to the equality of all members of this collective and promotes respectful and phobia-free interaction n with one another.

Rainbow-coloured benches for tolerance

is also very important. Under this article, groups or individuals who initiate or continue a strike in consultation with others may be punished by prison sentences of between 21 and 36 months and fines over 18 to 24 months. In the past, the trade union strike pickets in particular were involved in numerous court hearings as a result of this law.

The changes announced to the labour reform will apply to the whole country, including the Canary Islands, and are intended to give workers more freedom and above all better working conditions. Youth employment should be specifically promoted. Some parts of this will be launched before the summer break, others by the n end of the year.

Lively village life

Seasonal traditions At 6.45pm star chef Andrea Bernardi from the restaurant NUB in La Laguna will be demonstrating how to cook delicious potato dishes. The Gran Fiesta de Vinos y Papas starts at 7.30pm and completely new experiences will become possible at 7.30pm when the humble spud merges with the world of cocktails. Lucás Gómez Varela, Director of the Fusion Cocktail Academy in Adeje, will demonstrate how this is done. The ‘trilla’ boards split the wheat from the chaff

Agricultural traditions and customs in the Islands die hard – thank goodness! Potatoes, gofio (toasted ground grain) and the delicious local goat's cheeses are still among the staple foods in every Canarian household and Canarian wine has developed so much over the last two decades that it has gained national and international recognition. Despite technological advances, there are many ethnographic rescue groups which are fighting to keep the old memories alive, whether it is strains of potatoes, grape or grain, breeds of livestock or the methods of cultiva-

tion and breeding. The sometimes ‘offbeat’ methods in the Canaries are a rich treasuretrove of traditions, which are celebrated by a number of events all over the Islands during the year.

Threshing fest One of the oldest ‘rescued’ events is the threshing of the wheat which is held every year in San José de los Llanos. An all day event, which is usually a scorcher, this starts the evening before with an impromptu concert strictly amongst friends and organisers with wine and song, guitars, timples and lutes

providing entertainment until the early hours. The public part of the fun starts on July 28 at 11am in the grounds of the Ecomuseum, El Tanque, and continues for several hours. The loosened wheat sheaves are piled into the era (stone threshing floor) and horses are run across the fresh stems to break them down before a ‘tabla’, a threshing board made from wood set with volcanic stones, is placed over the flattened stalks and stems and drawn over the remains – normally by an ox – to separate the grain from the chaff. Children are often invited to ‘ride the boards’, sometimes holding

a potty under the beast’s tail – just in case... The results are then winnowed in the breeze.

Another local favourite in the area is the demonstration of the old-fashioned mowing

slopes still has to be mown by hand and, depending on the areas, sickles or scythes are the ‘weapons’ of choice. The weekend of August 11 and 12 will see the celebration of the Fiesta del trigo (wheat festival) in Icod el Alto. On Saturday, there is a youth competition of Canarian wrestling, a gofio preparation competition, talks, tasting etc. and on Sunday from 11am, the wonderful recreation of how the wheat was mown by hand, collected into sheaves and tied onto a beast of burden. Not to forget the scrummy picnic in the freshly-mown field afterwards. To watch this unique event, take the hill road between Los

process. Machines have been introduced in some places to carry out part of this work, but many a terrace on steep

Realejos and La Guancha and then the turn up the hill on the Carretera La Cabezada in n Icod el Alto.

Grain harvesting

Mowing grain crops as it used to be done

Educational, fun, wine and local food tastings, exhibitions and crafts - a great day out for one and all.

Talking potatoes The same evening, a local potato, the Papa Bonita will be honoured in Los Realejos. According to tradition, the first potatoes came to Tenerife in the year 1622 with Juan Bautista de Castro from Peru. They were sown in Icod el Alto and to this day the typical wrinkled potatoes are an integral part of Canarian cuisine. That is why they will be the focus of attention on this day. At 4pm there is a workshop for children on cooking potatoes, at 5pm a selection of desserts made with potatoes and at 6pm the tasting tables will open.

Lions roaring ahead

Arrest and 13,000 items seized

Brand counterfeiting

In an operation carried out jointly by the tax authority and the Guardia Civil, one person has been arrested in Santa Cruz for industrial property infringement. In a warehouse in San Miguel de Abona and in a shop in La Laguna, a total of 13,000 counterfeit branded goods were seized. These were primarily shirts, caps, shoes, bags, rucksacks and products for children, all of well-known brands that had been copied. A container was discovered during a routine inspection at the port. Suspicious containers from third world countries are regularly spot-checked at the port of Santa Cruz for intoxicants and counterfeit branded goods. To catch the wholesale receiver, the goods were allowed through customs and then traced.

A total of 13,000 counterfeited articles were confiscated

Residents of the Hermanos Franciscanos de Cruz Blanca care home being met at the entrance by Lions’ Vice President Julie Kempson as they were treated to a day out at Loro Parque

Last month, the Arona Las Galletas Costa del Silencio Lions Club continued to strengthen their ties with the Hermanos Franciscanos de Cruz Blanca, or White Fathers as they are more commonly known, in Las Chafiras. They did this not only by supporting them with a monthly purchase of much needed toiletries but also by contributing towards their bus fund. The centre looks after about 30 males with mental and physical disabilities who do not have any family to care for them, and they desperately need an adapted bus to be able to trans-

port their full time boarders to various hospital appointments and to pick up and drop off those that use the centre for day care. They are still quite a bit short of their target, so the Lions’ cheque for €2500 was gratefully received. To help cheer everyone up, the Lions also treated them to a day out at Loro Parque. In addition, the Lions’ monthly food contribution to the Asociación Comedor Social la Buena Estrella, a homeless shelter in El Fraile, was very gratefully received as always, and they are continuing to collect for the ‘Lions’ Little Boxes

of Love’ which are distributed amongst those that use the shelter. These are boxes filled with everyday items that most of us take for granted, such as toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, shower gel, combs, hairbrushes, razors, shaving foam and other toiletries. They have a couple of collection points in Los Cristianos for anyone who would like to help: The Clouds Pool Bar at the Heights and Pablos II. Any donations towards the boxes can also be taken to their shop in Coral Mar, Costa del Silencio, where they will be having a one week sale starting July

23. Everything will cost just €1 for one week, so go along and grab yourself a bargain. Shop hours are Monday to Friday from 10am until 2pm. The Lions’ next main event is Presidents Night, to be held at Westhaven Bay on September 22. There’ll be further details soon, but just pop that date in your diary! Any kind businesses out there that would like to donate a raffle prize can contact the Club’s president, Ericka, on 922 798 137. From flip-flops to school satchels - almost everything with a brand name is faked

For years, investigators have noticed an increase in imports of counterfeit branded goods from third world countries into the Canary Islands. Brand piracy has developed into a flourishing business with mafia structures. The wholesalers import the imitations via a European port. Preference is given to ports at which many containers are handled in order to minimise the risk of them being inspected. Once the goods have arrived in Europe, they circulate freely and uncontrolled within the European Union and are also shipped to Tenerife. In order to stop this, inter-agency cooperation is important. In this case, a Chinese man livn ing in Tenerife was arrested as the mastermind.

Administrative plight

Ownerless landmark In Arona, the local council is currently working to legalise one of the borough’s most striking landmarks, the Trampa del Viento (wind trap) on the coastline of Playa de Las Américas. The work of the artist Juan López Salvador is located in Avenida Francisco Andrade Fumero and was built in 2002. Today it is regarded as a characteristic element of the resort. But at the time the sculpture was erected, it was done without going to public tender and without installation permission. It was also never given to the Arona Council as property and catalogued as such. This situation is particularly problematic because the necessary repair measures cannot be carried out by the council because it does not own the sculpture. According to the current socialist council, this circumstance is a relic from the previous Coalición Canarialed administration period and is not an isolated case. Postevent legalisation approval is currently being worked on. At the very least the sculpture should become the property n of the council so that it can be restored.

Perfect performing arts

MAPAS makes it By Barbara Belt The Canaries’ traditional role as Africa and Old/New World bridge was revamped between July 11 and 15, when the second edition of the South Atlantic Performing Arts Market (MAPAS) morphed Santa Cruz into an international cultural showcase of some clout. Long may it last! Think stateof-the-art performing arts and music trade fair, add networking, training and information exchange, and you’ve got it. Although performances were public, free and popular, the fifty-six acts from sixteen countries were there to impress some hundred and fifty programmers and agents, who’d come from forty countries to shop for festival and event acts. Musicians had thirty minute slots to strut their stuff, while dance, theatre and circus groups’ performance lengths varied. Artistic, technical and organisational qualities were keynotes throughout. Evening audiences loved the outside auditorium venues. Cava bubbling in the evening sun, waves splashing below, we were delighted by performers like Lornoar (Cameroon), as a quick survey to make sure it wasn’t just the cava revealed: “Wonderful! We’re so lucky to be here!”, from Dácil, 22, Tenerife. “I’m amazed. It’s like a really upmarket festival”, says Liam, 27, from the UK. “All these marvellous performers here from all over the world! Incredible!”, enthused Carmen-Lola, 79, from Tenerife. And so on.

The Santa Cruz Auditorium provided an impressive backdrop to many of the performances

ker, a populist jazz-rock band. With two Glastonbury appearances at West Holts behind them and a third rumoured for next year, the extraordinary Troker’s storming set, complete with tequila, closed Friday night on a high. MAPAS’ local economic effect topped €5.3 million, hopefully safeguarding both this fledgling event and its philosophy n into the future. The atmosphere was incredible

As well as performances, artists’ groups from the Canaries and 29 countries in Africa, Latin America and Southern Europe met international cultural agents and programmers in pitch and networking sessions, workshops, round tables and conferences. At the inaugural conference, Miami University’s Prof. George Yúdice said: “Nowadays, performing arts have to compete

with increasing competition from the digital world. It’s vital not only to promote good artist/venue matching, but also to help performing artists thrive in these conditions”. Performers and programmers alike agreed that MAPAS was “A great new initiative”, said Katja Somrak, a programmer from Slovenia. “It’s been marvellous”, stated Ana Rodríguez, minder for Tro-

Chocolate cream without palm oil

Pancakes with Pepa-Crem and fruits. The chocolate cream remains soft to the touch even in the refrigerator

Chocolate cream spread on bread for breakfast has been a favourite for many locals from childhood. The original, Nutella, comes from Italy and has been copied in many ways in different countries. A Spanish couple, Alicia Casas and Carlos Lapetra from Seville, recently set out to develop their own chocolate cream variant. Their main focus was on environmental considerations, as Pepa-Crem is produced without palm oil,

using sunflower oil instead. The manufacturers claim that "This chocolate cream contains 50 per cent less saturated fatty acids and more natural and healthier ingredients". Both are dessert professionals and have been selling frozen cakes since 2003. They developed this alternative because as parents they wanted their seductive sweet sensation not to affect the orangutans, whose habitat is strongly threatened by the clearing of the jungle in

their homelands of Indonesia, Borneo and Sumatra. The forests are being cleared to make way for palm oil plantations. In five to ten years, the apes, whose genetic material is 97 per cent identical to that of humans, could be extinct. At present, they are considered highly endangered. At first, the pair from Andalusia were laughed at. They started offering their chocolate cream for sale two months ago via Amazon. On the first day

two pots were ordered, shortly thereafter more than 100 a day were sold. On Amazon, PepaCrem is now the number one seller, ahead of classics such as Cola Cao and Nescafé. The company now produces 20,000 pots of chocolate cream a day and also sells it on the Spanish Peninsula via Aldi supermarkets, where the cream has met with a very positive response from consumers. The next step for the company is to conquer the European and North African market. The idea of abandoning palm oil (the cheapest option) has also been taken up by other chocolate cream manufacturers in Spain. Those who pay attention to this kind of detail will also find alternatives on the supermarket shelves in the Canary Islands that are palm oil-free. The inventors of PepaCrem, Carlos Lapetra and Alicia Casas explained "We have made a start and are sure that other manufacturers will follow suit, because people are paying more and more attention to sustainability and healthy alternatives in their diet. Besides Aldi, other supermarket chains are also interested in our product. We are also currently negotiating with supermarkets in the Canary Islands." National newspapers, radio and TV programmes, bloggers and so-called online influencers have enthusiastically reported about the healthier chocolate cream. They describe it not only as healthier, but also as "particularly good in taste". In the last two weeks alone, demand has risen by over 500 n per cent.

During July, Canarian wine producers celebrated several events: a master class given in Tenerife by the world guru of volcanic wines, John Szavo MS, the nomination of John Szavo as the first ambassador of Canarian Wine, and the first vendimia (grape harvest) in the Canaries this year. The Master Sommelier John Szabo is considered the best in his field in Canada and is also a world reference in wines produced on volcanic soils. Szabo has developed an innovative educational and promotional movement based on wines made from vines planted in volcanic terrain around the globe, which aims to be the catalyst that brings together the wines produced in some of the most extreme winemaking conditions in the world, in one single category, and of course Canarian wine shines among them. In early July, he imparted a master class on his subject and ran a volcanic wine tasting at the headquarters of the Regulating Council of Denomination of Protected Origin Islas Canarias and Ycoden y Daute in La Guancha in an initiative led by the European Erasmus+ Eurovitisos project at the local secondary school. BUSINESS

Goya Lawyers

What is a floor clause? By Ainhoa Almazán Goyaabogados.com A floor clause is a limit on the interest rate banks put on mortgages, which means that even if the Euribor (or applicable interest rate) falls below that limit, you always pay that minimum. The floor clause, which sets a certain limit, says that you will never pay less than ‘X’ per cent even though the Euribor is lower. This limit on the interest rate is not in itself illegal, what

the Supreme Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union have declared illegal is the way in which banks have included it in virtually all mortgages, without explaining to the client how it works and how much money its application may cost them. Absolutely all consumers and clients, who have not applied for a mortgage in a professional capacity, can claim back the extra money paid due to the floor clause from their bank. A legally formu-

lapses. In law, that a thing is null and void means that it has never existed and if it has never existed, it cannot

be given a time limit, so we can claim it at any time. It’s important to note that we should not sign any documents without the assistance of a lawyer, as banks take advantage of the personal relationship that their employees have with customers to make them sign waivers of their right to claim and sometimes even take advantage of this understanding to change the interest rate of the mortgage to a much higher one. In most cases these agreements can be cancelled. Banks use technical language to include the floor clause in the mortgage document and this makes it very difficult in most cases to check whether the mortgage has a floor clause or not. Therefore, if you want to know if your mortgage has a floor clause or other unfair terms reclaimable by law, do not hesitate to contact us, we will review your mortgage and take care of all the necessary procedures until you recover all your money. We review your mortgage for free and only charge when you collect. To contact us, call 922 797 500 or email despacho@ n goyaabogados.com.

Discount up to 75 per cent

Cheaper travel to Spanish peninsula The long discussed increase in residents’ discount on air and sea travel to the Spanish Peninsula was finally approved in mid-July. With effect from July 16, the residents’ discount was increased from 50 per cent to 75 per cent on inter-island services, for all residents of the

Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo said that “This success has shown that if we speak with one voice, we can achieve much that is of great interest to our citizens”. Clavijo, together with the President of

the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, had insisted on a rapid introduction of the right to better access to the Spanish Peninsula. Capacity between the Canary Islands and the Peninsula currently stands at 4.8 million places, around 12.5 per cent more n than last year.

Blevins Franks

The Spanish budget for 2018 is finally approved By Paul Montague, Partner, Blevins Franks

The Spanish budget for 2018 was meant to have been approved in September 2017, but due to political instability in Spain and the lack of sufficient support in the Congress to pass the budget, it had to be postponed. With no 2018 budget confirmed at the start of the year, the 2017 budget was automatically extended until the new one could be approved. The Spanish Congress finally approved the 2018 budget on May 23, 2018 after weeks of hard negotiations. It has now also been approved by the Senate and was published in the Spanish Official Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado – BOE) on July 4, 2018. The 2018 budget did not include any major tax changes and will have minimal impact on UK nationals in the Canary Islands. Wealthier residents may be affected by the extension of wealth tax for at least

one more year, although this was expected. Here is a summary of the measures which may affect residents of Spain, depending on your circumstances. • The Spanish income tax return threshold has been increased from €12,000 to €14,000 gross per annum. So, if your annual 2018 income is less than €14,000, you do not need to submit an income tax return. The rest of the tax rates and income bands remain the same as 2017. • Wealth tax (‘temporarily’ re-introduced in 2011) has been extended for yet The 2018 budget did not include any major tax changes and will another year and is applicable for tax year 2018. have minimal impact on UK nationals in the Canary Isles • The minimum widow and state pensions have been invest in new companies, of per cent. ADOPT, DON’T BUY

Animal charities’ round up K9 New Puppies! As well as the four puppies featured in the adoption section this edition, our K9 staff also found a box full of pups outside the refuge a few days later. However, those four little girls were only two weeks old and will remain in a foster home until they are old enough to be adopted. In addition we also have some lovely three-month old pups which are looking for homes: three brothers called Snap, Crackle and Pop. We also have many other dogs waiting for their forever homes. You can see them on our website at www. k9tenerife.com. Or visit the Refuge on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas, any day between 10am and 2pm. Alternatively, call us on 667 638 468 or email info@k9tenerife.com. You will also find stories of our dogs’ antics on our Facebook page at Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker or K9 Tenerife. Also, to see daily photos of the walks that take place at K9, like the facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9. Shop till you drop Visit our shop in Alcalá Plaza, every day from 10am to 2pm. Donations of quality household goods, clothes, books, shoes or other items are very welcome as well. Call 646 561 035 to arrange collection of larger items from all local areas. Proceeds from our shop are essential to ensuring our K9 dogs have everything they need to make their time at the refuge as comfortable as possible. There are always

lots of bargains to be had and our volunteers will make you very welcome.

Cats Welfare All of our cats go on a week’s trial in your home so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together then kitten injection, micro chip and neutering is free for the second one. Adopt a black kitten or two and both will receive the above treatments for free. Contact us via our website at www.cats-welfare-tenerife.com or ring/whatsapp Maria (English) on 646 629 129, seven days a week, 9am to 6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 671 282 773.

Alternatively, message us on Facebook. Our shop Find it on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino), open seven days a week, 10am until 6pm. If you don’t have transport or have large bulky items to donate you can ring Mark on 636 590 557 to arrange collection. Or maybe you would you like to help in the shop?

Acción del Sol Summer has again seen a large rise in abandoned dogs with owners preferring to let their dogs loose on the streets rather than pay for kennels, making our job much harder. Also, with the weather starting to warm up

please remember to take extra care with your dogs, ensuring they are not left unsupervised in cars even for a short time, as the temperature can rise extremely quickly, causing unnecessary stress, illness, and even death. We also advise to walk your dogs early in the morning and later on in the evenings to avoid the heat of the day and the high temperature of the pavements that can burn your pet’s paws. In addition, please ensure that your dog has lots of access to shade and plenty of cool water. We would like to remind you all that it is obligatory to have your dog micro-chipped and registered at your local town hall. It is much harder to contact the owner of a dog if it arrives at our refuge without a chip and it can cause your dog a lot of unnecessary stress. With more than 230 dogs looking for new loving homes please do come and visit us to see if maybe one is for you. We do not charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, heartworm and flea free, passported and sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife. How you can help We are often asked how people can help. We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly

ADOPTION

A sad and happy tail When K9 staff arrived at their refuge one morning, they found two sealed potato sacks outside which were moving! Upon opening them, staff found six puppies, which were obviously from two different litters. The two smallest ones, which they called Lina and Leo, were quickly adopted and went to lovely homes. But this left four: Leila, Lucy, Luke and Lola, who are still waiting at the refuge. They were a little shy at first but are getting better every day. The four pups will be medium to large in size when fully grown. If you would like to know more about these youngsters, call K9 on 667 638 468 or email info@k9tenerife.com. Alternatively, visit the Refuge on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras n and Las Zocas, any day between 10am and 2pm.

dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs travel by flight to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. In addition, we are desperately looking for people who are travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. All that’s needed is a little time at the airport: all necessary paperwork and handling of the dogs is done by AccionTier staff.

Please do call 922 778 630 if you can help in any way, or visit us on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 2pm to 5pm, and Saturdays 1pm to 4pm. We’re situated directly under the wind turbines, from exit 52 on the TF1 north bound, just after the El Médano junction. Head for the windmills on the coast and we’re located in the buildings on the right hand side. Alternatively, email us on teneriffa@aktiontier.org or visit our Facebook page at Action n tier Acción del Sol.

Of course, the latest swimwear is also included in the fun! This can be either seductive or cheerful, however, all models have one thing in common: their high-tech materials are colourfast, so that the Canarian sun and the sea cannot harm the tones, they retain their shape for a long time and are particularly quick drying. Motor 7 Islas InfinityXtreme

Extreme sport Motor 7 Islas InfinityXtreme hit its 10th anniversary this year in Puerto de La Cruz. A total of 850 participants registered to undertake the challenge. It was a five- and ten-kilometre-long course with obstacles, mud pools and other adversities that had to be overcome. In the first fivekilometre run, 550 athletes competed. When the starting shot was fired at 4pm, the sun burned mercilessly from the sky and gave the extreme athletes additional problems. Tanausú Hernández González from Club Nutriforma Trail was the first to cross the finish line after only 26:52 minutes. Juan Antonio Rodríguez González from Esportiu Som Moratalla de Valencia came second only 23 seconds later and Eloy Ramos Hernández from MAP Trail Espaciosalud finished third with a time of 27:28 minutes. Only eight and a half minutes after the first male winner, the first woman, Irati Cuñado Ares, crossed the finish line. At 5.30pm the starting shot was fired for the second set of runners, who had planned to master the course twice, and that was a real mammoth task. All the more astonishing were the excellent

times that the best achieved. The winner and champion of the year 2018 was the military pentathlete Aday López Abellán of Club 3 Comsquad. After only 52:16 minutes of sheer effort

The local hero Javier Rodríguez de León took second place 24 seconds behind him and Xerach Silvera Cabrera was third on the podium at just after five minutes behind the leader. Fun and games

Cyclists sleep well at the Botánico

The shepherd’s leap is particularly good fun in a country summer camp

Within the ‘No Olvides lo Nuestro’ (don’t forget our heritage) programme, Fuerteventura in particular is cultivating traditional Canarian sports. These include, for example, the shepherd’s leap, stick fighting or Bola Canaria, a kind of Pétanque or boules. During the school term these sports are integrated into the curriculum so that the children and young people can try them out. Lessons in coordination, skill and fairness within the

sports are combined with the appreciation of old customs. The teaching of the traditional sports continues in the summer where they are promoted in plazas, on the beach or during summer camps. At a summer camp at the Tefía hostel, for example, 55 girls and boys between the ages of eight and 13 years old were initiated in these sports. It was twice as much fun for them because they were right out n in the countryside.

Loro Parque is well known as a sponsor of local cycling clubs and they have now prepared their five star deluxe Hotel Botánico for this special group of guests. The facility has been adapted so that the hotel is now considered ‘bicycle friendly’. It guarantees perfect accommodation conditions for cyclists, geared to their needs. The main attraction is a fully equipped workshop to repair, fine tune or overhaul their bikes, and at the same time it offers a massage service for post-training relaxation. The Oriental Spa Garden is the top spa in Europe and the Mediterranean, according to Condé Nast Johansens, and thanks to its professional team, it offers their clients the experience of

the best treatments and the latest generation in health programmes. Thanks to this innovation, in this case to meet the needs of cyclists visiting or living in the Canary Islands, the hotel further strengthens its commitment to its guests, who can always count on the best quality service and whose wishes and suggestions are happily taken into account. In addition to the amenities and comfort of the hotel, it’s also a perfect geographical starting point for cyclists, located as it is in the north of Tenerife, in a paradisiacal garden in Puerto de La Cruz. From there, numerous cycling tours of various degrees of difficulty or even a complete tour around n the island are possible.

CN Martiánez Spanish Champion

The 30th celebration of the Spanish summer championships for children and young people in lifesaving were held in July. In the Galician city of Concello de Laxe near A Coruña, children and young people aged between 13 and 16 years old, competed in the infant and cadet age groups. A total of 136 teams from 43 swimming clubs from all over Spain were represented. There were 454 young lifeguards at the start on the Costa da Morte. The high presence of female athletes was striking, accounting for 58 per cent of all participants. For the Canary Islands 17 swimmers from CN Martiánez in Puerto de La Cruz were present. They more than worthily represented the archipelago and in the end even stood on the podium as Spanish Champions in the cadet category for girls, boys and as a team. In the age group of 13- and 14-year-olds the club’s team reached a remarkable twelfth place. The 15- to 16-year-old cadets won the championship mainly due to great individual performances. The Gold went to: María Rodríguez de la Sierra (swimming, surfing and rescue with the board), Carlos Acosta Reyes (swimming and surfing), Diego Molina Cabo (speed swimming), the quartet Carlos Acosta, Diego Molina, Pablo Castaneda and Pablo León (rescue squadron with the hose), María Rodríguez, Victoria Sosa, Daniela Alonso and Sara Rodríguez (rescue with the hose), Carlos Acosta and Diego Molina (rescue with the board). Daniela Alonso Melián and Diego Molina also won bronze medals for swimming and surfing, and María Rodríguez and Victoria Sosa Cabo women’s titles for saving using a board. Alba Pérez Delgado won the silver medal in n swimming and surfing in the 13/14 year age group.

Mahou Cup triumph boosts CD Tenerife The lucky team from CD Tenerife

the bar. The second half proved to be a stop-start affair with the referee blowing up for petty fouls that halted the flow of the game, which by now was being played in a better spirit. The home team picked up their game in front of their 5,000 yellow clad followers but rarely threatened Dani in the Tenerife goal. The match finished 0-0 and went directly to penalties where

Tenerife won 3-5, it was well deserved on the run of play. The Mahou Cup was presented to captain Suso, scorer of the winning penalty, and there were smiles all round from the team. Of course, what matters is when the season starts on August 17 not winning pre-season shootouts, but any sort of victory against Las Palmas is celebrated n in the these parts.

Lucky fan presented with a new shirt

By Chris Todd especially in the first half when back. His two goals sealed the ture as injuries have blighted a Malbasic goal (possibly his last with Tenerife) was the only difference between the two teams. New signing Joao Rodriguez, on loan from Chelsea FC, looked quick and has a few tricks up his sleeve - it was his turn of pace that made the first goal. After the break, CD Tenerife changed most of their starting eleven and eventually the class of Bryan Acosta stifled any Marino hopes of a come-

game, but this match was more about finding rhythm after the summer break and in the process raised some much needed funds for the local club. A few days later a stiffer test awaited CD Tenerife in the annual Mahou Cup against fierce rivals UD Las Palmas in Maspalomas in the South of Gran Canaria. Managers of both sides would rather not play this passionate annual fix-

encounters in the past but a five-year deal with beer company Mahou will have to be completed. The first minutes of the game were intense with tackles flying in from all angles. The referee booked a few players and had words with both captains. No-one likes losing to the old enemy! With the pre-season in full swing and the transfer rumour mill in overdrive the blanquiazules have enjoyed two wins from their first two friendly encounters. The first run out was a routine 0-3 victory against CD Marino in Playa de Las Américas in front of a crowd of around 1,000 spectators. Despite the final score local team CD Marino put on a good show,

When young fan Patricia Aznar Esquivel turned up at the stadium to renovate her season ticket she came away happier than she may have expected. Taking into account that it was her 10th consecutive year of dedicated support, ex-player Toño and General director Pedro Zaragoza presented the fortunate fan with the new CD Tenerife home shirt for the season 2018/2019. It was the first look at one of the three new shirts expected and supporters were on the whole very pleased with what they saw. Rumours suggest that the new second shirt will be sky blue this time with the third shirt remaining black and pink, keeping the connection with the AECC Charity. CD Tenerife hope to sell in excess of 10,000 season tickets this time. n
