Twenty-one people living in houses on Calle Tegueste in Puerto de La Cruz had only one day’s notice to leave their homes due to safety concerns in mid-September. Local residents and technicians were shocked when a stretch of the road developed a range of dangerous fissures which continued to grow over a period of two days. This part of the city lies directly on the coast and is mainly inhabited by fishermen. The area is regularly exposed to high seas and heavy waves and had already experienced problems. Humpback whale passes Tenerife At the beginning of September a humpback whale (Magaptera novaeangliae), first spotted off the coast fronting the Montaña de Guaza, caused a sensation in south Tenerife. The renowned, professional underwater photographer Sergio Hanquet was one of the privileged individuals who had permission to approach the animal. Hanquet, who went into the water with the permission of the Environmental Protection and Agriculture Agency (MAPAM) to take underwater pictures of the giant of the ocean commented “First we saw the blowing, then a huge dorsal fin. The mother of all whales what an impressive spectacle.” For this great treat he left everything behind at a moment’s notice and immediately went out to sea.

The humpback whale is one of 30 species of whales that can occasionally be observed permanently or in transit in Canary Island waters. The Tahonilla representative added, "Perhaps two or three specimens pass through the archipelago during their migration. They are rarely seen." The humpback whale belongs to the bearded whale family and lives mostly as a loner or in small groups. It populates all the oceans of the world. In the summer, they usually stay in polar seas and in the winter in tropical and sub-

tropical waters. Interestingly, the populations do not cross the equator, so that the populations of the southern and northern hemispheres remain separated. Despite their mass they are very lively animals and fast swimmers. This whale-type prefers flat sea-zones and crosses deeper waters only during its migration. They hardly take food during the migration and this type of whale is used to long fasting periods. As a rule, it eats during the summer period when a tidy fat-pad is put on, from which the animals live during the winter months. They feed on krill and small fish. Humpback whales are known above all for their song which, according to a research-group of the Australian University of Queensland in Brisbane, comprises 622 different sounds. It is mainly the male animals that produce this underwater chant. Their songs are individual and even change during the n lifetime of the whale.

Part of the group’s statement stresses that: "We are repeatedly told that the shortcomings in our district are similar to those in others, and gradually to be repaired. But we also have decisive conditions to add: The Atlantic Ocean, which crashes with full force on our coast, and the salt air, which accelerates the decomposition process." It’s not only that they want the vicinity to be made safe so the fear for their homes is finally a thing of the past. They also hope that the area’s natural charm, with a pretty waterfront promenade, plants, street cafés and colourfully painted facades, will finally be used to n attract tourists.

Trust in an ethical bank The mayor of San Juan de la Rambla, Fidela Velázquez, met with representatives of Fiare Banca Ética in mid-September with the aim of placing the financial management of the borough in the hands of a bank based on ethical principles and with a positive focus on social and environmental concerns. San Juan de la Rambla would thus take on a pioneering role, economically speaking. “The application of a sustainable policy to the Bank’s accounts is not only a clear advantage for local development but also a step towards the modernisation of the community. We have been moving in this direction since the beginning of the legislature, which has made us one of the most transparent local authorities on the island and has gradually adapted our infrastructure to this century”, said the mayor. The bank, which is currently located only in Spain and Italy, grew out of the Fiare Foundation and has been established as Fiare Banca Populare Ética since autumn 2014. It has already attracted large amounts of members and customers who wish to join an institution that acts cooperatively and in accordance with ethical principles at a European level. This means, for instance, that the Bank’s loans are only granted to sustainable, environmentally friendly and social projects, with business ideas based on fair trade. The northern hospital is growing The Tenerife North hospital in Icod de los Vinos, which was a long overdue project to improve the healthcare of the population in the north of the island and to relieve the strain on the university hospital HUC in La Laguna, is being increasingly integrated into the health system and continually better equipped. A laboratory for clinical analyses, a magnetic resonance device and mammography equipment will soon be put into operation. In addition, the early detection of intestinal diseases by endoscopy and for breast cancer is to be improved, so that patients will no longer have to travel to La Laguna in the future. In August, work also began on the construction of a large outpatient surgery department with two operating theatres and an outpatient

pharmacy. Improvements have also been made in the paediatrics department where the professionals are primarily specialised in the care of child emergencies. The statistics show how well the Tenerife North hospital now functions and contributes to relieving the workload of the University Hospital. Last year, 42,673 consultations were carried out in 15 different specialist departments. In the first seven months of this year alone, the number has risen to 25,023. In mid-September, the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET signed an agreement with the Gran Canaria Island Council to install a subtropical meteorological centre recognised by the World Weather Organisation. Innocent accomplice to 11-S Many recently commemorated the 17th anniversary of the horrific attacks on New York‘s World Trade Center (WTC), and for one Canarian it is a particularly poignant date - as he was the person who taught the perpetrators to fly. On September 11, 2001, Mohamed Atta and Marwan al Shehhi each flew a Boeing 767 into the Twin Towers, killing almost 3,000 people and injuring a further 6,000. It was a pivotal event that surpassed all other terrorist attacks in the Western world to date, and is deeply engraved in the memories of the rescue workers, those who lost loved ones, and everyone who witnessed it live or on screen. Like many, Iván Chirivella from Gran Canaria remembers exactly where he was when he saw the news. “I came out of the shower and saw on the TV

He also took a clear stand on various points and called his fellow believers to account. “Many local people are afraid that their societies are changing beyond comprehension and they feel that their nation’s resources are being disproportionately utilised in favour of immigrants. Whilst the term ‘immigrant’ is used, the real issue for most people is ‘Islam’ and the fact that the vast majority of immigrants to Europe are Muslims fleeing from war-torn countries in the Middle East”, he explained. Society should not cast aside innocent people who only want the opportunity to live in peace and who desire to be good citizens and follow the laws of the land in which they live. Instead, we should be there to give a helping hand to those whose lives have been broken, who have been tormented and who are utterly helpless, vulnerable and defenceless. Let us prove our humanity. Let us show our compassion. Let us be there to shoulder the burdens of those who are in n desperate need.”

At the beginning of September, at around 11.30am an emergency call was received from the Northern Hospital in Tenerife. A 27-year-old pregnant woman had gone to the hospital in Icod with her mother after her waters broke. She was in an ambulance with an emergency doctor on the way to Puerto de La Cruz when they had to stop at a service station in San Juan de la Rambla. The little one was in too much of a hurry and was born on the spot. For Doctor Bienvenido Bécqeur this is not uncommon. "In the last few years as an emergency doctor I have helped ten babies into the world and everything always went without complications. Fortunately, mother and child continue in good health," n he said happily.

All for a soft landing Following the updates to the runways at Tenerife’s southern airport, the runways at the Los Rodeos northern airport are also about to be renovated. The work will be carried out between 11pm and 6am when the airport is not in active operation under normal circumstances, and a total of €5.5 million will be invested in the project. In addition to re-asphalting, the illumination of the runway areas will be converted to LED. Other parts of the airport will also undergo a general overhaul. A total construction period of eight months has been budgeted for, with only four months of those for the runways. Work on the new asphalt for an optimal, smooth landing is scheduled to begin as early as the end of September. Runways 12 and 30 are 3,400 metres long and 45 metres wide. Both the contractor and airport staff have pledged to do everything in their power n to minimise any inconvenience to passengers.

Fishermen who go out to sea with their boats and catch their fish in the traditional way are part of El Hierro’s identity and fishing is also an important factor in the island’s economy. That is why the island council has now made €120,000 available as a direct subsidy for the fishermen. Half of this amount will be invested in the purchase or repair of engines, electric fishing lines, radar and sonar equipment, autopilots, communications equipment, ice machines and other useful tackle. Part may also be used to caulk the boats, cover maintenance costs and improve working conditions on deck. The Island Councillor for the rural and marine environment Juan Pedro Sánchez explained “We want our fishermen to have modern and safe boats. This is essential for such an important sector as this, not only because 70 people work in this sector in El Hierro, but also because this work ensures the supply to our bars and restaurants and is therefore of tourist interest.” The remaining €60,000 will be distributed directly to the PescaRestinga cooperative to improve its infrastructure in the fishing port of La Restinga. From there, the freshly caught fish is distributed to restaurants and private households. Around 300 tons of fresh fish are sold at this small port every year. How children can move properly The long summer holidays have come to an end and everyday life is returning to the archipelago’s families. The Canary Islands Association of Physiotherapists have taken the opportunity to remind the public that the human body is designed for movement, and that it’s important for everyone, including school children, to move correctly so as not to damage muscles and tendons. For instance, children should not have to sit for more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Getting up and moving around briefly will relax both body and mind and they will then be more receptive again. If the child is sitting in class or in front of a computer, a correct sitting posture is also important: elbows should be supported on a table, feet kept firmly on the floor and back as straight as possible. The weight of schoolbags should be distributed evenly between the two shoulders and must not exceed ten per cent of the child's body weight.

The child must be able to walk upright at all times, and straps should be wide and padded. An additional chest or hip belt is also recommended in order to distribute the weight more accordingly. Open air music fest

On July 14 of this year, residents of the town of La Orotava were shocked to the core when a mother and two daughters were apparently murdered by the youngsters’ father who then went on to hang himself. As reported here in edition 826, 40-year-old Paula M.L. was found on her bed with her daughters, aged five- and three-years-old, in her arms, with the family’s dog also dead on the floor. The father, 45-year-old Afghanistan veteran Israel R.M., was found in a neighbouring room. Initially, it was thought that the man had sedated his wife and children before the murders, but this has now been refuted by the results of the autopsies, during which no residues of drugs, carbon monoxide, narcotics or alcohol were found in the bodies. The results show that the mother was strangled in full consciousness and the children were suffocated, also without having been tranquilised. The victims’ mother and grandmother had called the police because she had been unable to contact her daughter, and neighbours reported that the family had not been seen either. Yet, two days earlier the couple and their children had been present at a family reunion without incident. Nothing suspicious pointed to the impending tragedy, but it was evidently that same evening that the father murdered his entire family, except a teenage son who was born to Paula M.L. during a previous relationship. At the time of the incident the youngster was on holiday with his father. n

A direct connection between Gran Canaria and the Galician city of Vigo, in north western Spain, has been in operation since May and is being actively used by travellers from both locations. It has proved so popular that from October 30, a further connection via the northern

Los Rodeos airport in Tenerife will operate with direct scheduled flights four times a week. This will strengthen the offer for Spanish holidaymakers who account for the second largest market share in Tenerife. Connecting flights to other islands will be offered by Binter free of charge. Alberto Bernabé,

Tenerife's Tourism Councillor announced "With this scheduled flight from Vigo to Tenerife with Binter, a route previously only served by charter flights, we now have another regular option. Galician holidaymakers appreciate the island's climate, gastronomy, outstanding four- and five-star hotels,

which are among the best in Europe, and the wide range of leisure activities on offer." The route will be operated by a CRJ 1,000 aircraft with a capacity for 100 passengers, which joined Binter's fleet in 2017. Tickets cost from €35 for residents to €115 for nonresidents.

A 27-year-old motorsport enthusiast published the above message on social networks at the beginning of September, following an accident. The incident could have ended very badly for her and her 24-year-old companion. At around 1.30am the woman was driving her BMW Series 3 E46 on Calle Poeta José María Millares Sall in Las Palmas when, according to her, she lost control of her vehicle. The car broke through the crash barrier and plunged 50 metres into the Barranco de Los Álamos. The vehicle overturned several times until it stopped at the foot of the ravine. Miraculously, both occupants were able to leave the car under their own steam, suffering only bruising and minor injuries to their backs and heads, and climbed up out of the ravine onto the road. They were taken to the Doctor Negrín hospital in Las Palmas for examination. Local Police disconnected the battery to prevent the risk of fire to the sports car and firemen also cut away the part of the crash barrier that the car had carried with it before a large crane arrived to retrieve it. By that time, the driver was already back at the scene, and beginning to realise what a miracle it was that both she and her companion had come out of the experience with only minor injuries. n

Preparations in full swing Sequences for the next chapter of the heroic saga Rambo V will be shot in Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz over an estimated four weeks. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez recently met with representatives of the production company Nu Boyana Film Studios to discuss the exact locations, shooting times, the filmmakers' wishes and coordination requirements. Filming in Tenerife is expected to begin in mid-November. Extremely pleased, Mayor Bermúdez explained "The fact that the filming of this action movie, which will be screened worldwide, will be hosted by us is excellent news from an economic point of view as well as in terms of external tourist advertising. Since the shooting of Bourne we have demonstrated that we are prepared to host productions of this level." At that time, it’s estimated that the filmmakers’ presence in Santa Cruz had a financial impact of about 10 meuros. Almost a thousand jobs were created, 350 of which were direct jobs. The city's employees, assistants and police will professionally coordinate and cover the filming. At a recent meeting, Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo stressed that the Islands must make every effort to be prepared for the challenge of Brexit and to take timely countermeasures. The most important concern was the need to preserve such an important and loyal market as the UK. "Many meet-

ings have taken place recently under the chairmanship of the Canary Islands, which currently preside over the Conference of the Presidents of the Outermost Regions of Europe. In talks with the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, and his counterpart in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, we underlined the prior-

ity of a good Brexit outcome due to the traditionally strong economic ties between Britain and the Canary Islands", Clavijo reported. "Every year, around five million British holidaymakers come to the Canary Islands. In addition, there are more than 30,000 British people who reside in the archipelago and fly home regularly.

And don't forget the more than 2,700 Canarians who live in the UK and visit their Canary Islands’ families. That's why it's important to analyse the changes that Brexit could bring", he added. For this reason, he was commissioned by the Canary Islands Government to carry out a study to identify possible consequences and

the countermeasures needed to minimise any negative effects. The Island Councillor for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Isaac Castellano, also saw at the Brexit meeting one of the great, imminent challenges for Canarian tourism. He agreed with the President on the importance of minimising any consequences and ensuring that families continue to choose the archipelago as their holiday destination. A very important starting point in this context is flight connections. "Commercial air traffic plays an important role in terms of tourism, trade and the economy in general, as well as for people's prosperity", stressed Javier Gándara, director of EasyJet Spain. The current uncertainty about the conditions that will come with Brexit causes a predicament because airlines plan their routes months in advance. He therefore advocated bilateral agreements with the Canary Islands to ensure continuity of cooperation.

Currently, the EU member states have a liberalisation agreement that allows airlines to operate unrestrictedly between European countries. There are no final decisions regarding Brexit in this respect, however. Ideally, bilateral agreements need to be reached to ensure that air traffic between British cities and the Canary Islands’ airports remains free-moving into the future. The importance of air traffic from the Canary Islands to the European holiday markets and, at the same time, the vulnerability of the Islands to air traffic trends are shown by the slump in British holidaymakers caused by the closure of the British airline Monarch in the summer of 2017. It is agreed that Brexit and its possible consequences need to be assessed as soon as possible and to counteract them with concrete agreements. There is no more time to lose, however, as Britain is set to leave the EU on March 29, 2019. n

Better labour market situation

Unemployment figures fall in Arona Although the number of tourists who have come to the island this year has declined slightly, the borough of Arona has positive figures to report from the labour market. While the quantity of unemployed people rose during August in 20 out of 31 boroughs, the rate in Arona fell by 1.3 per cent. On average, there was a 0.23 per cent rise in Tenerife and 0.13 per cent across the Canary Islands.

However, for the first time in a long while, fewer than 7,000 job seekers are registered in Arona. In the last two years, the rate has fallen from 20.95 to 18.76 per cent. By comparison, the proportion of unemployed people in the archipelago is currently at 20.06 per cent. This puts the southern borough in second place in comparison with others with more than 40,000 inhabitants, directly behind Adeje and even

ahead of the tourist centre of Gran Canaria in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where 19.24 per cent of the population is unemployed. Fresh tuna is one of the fish on offer practically permanently in the Canary Islands and it’s available almost all year round. Legally, the markets have to indicate where and how the fish were caught. Most Canarian fishermen still do this in the traditional way with a fishing rod and bait. Fish caught in this way has no unwanted bycatch and can be enjoyed without a guilty conscience. Raw fish is not everyone’s cup of tea, but those who like sushi should try the following recipe. How it works For two people, buy around half a kilo of fresh tuna in

Congress Culinaria 2018

The Culinaria 2018 Congress from September 25 to 27 at the Centre for Tourist Development (CDTCA) in Adeje will offer around 40 lectures, workshops, cooking demonstrations and the best of the finest Canarian cuisine. Top speakers on the programme include Susi Díaz, the award-winning Erlantz Gorostiza and the brothers Juan Carlos and Jonathan Padrón, whose vision fuses innovation and the roots of Canarian cuisine. Practical knowledge from top gastronomes’ kitchens, the best table service and the high art of the shaken or stirred cocktail specialists can also be observed. Key ingredients such as Canarian cheeses, local black pig meat, avocados, Canarian potato varieties, Atlantic tuna and other specialities will be explained and well prepared by the professionals and presented to the public. Joaquin Felipe and Jaime Palmar, for example, will demonstrate the versatility of tuna in the kitchen. Whether raw or cooked, there are many interesting ways to prepare tuna. How it is cleaned, cut and prepared will be demonstrated by the two chefs on the final day on September 27.

Acción del Sol Titsa, our bus company here in Tenerife, is helping us spread the word that dogs should not be abandoned and that it’s much better to adopt a dog than buy one. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, heartworm- and flea-free, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife.

Tennis Tournament We have teamed up with the Miraverde Tennis Club in Playa de Las Américas for a tournament that will take place on October 6 between 2pm and 6pm. The Acción del Sol refuge has once again been inundated with abandoned Podencos as the hunting season is in full swing. They often arrive at the refuge in awful condition and horribly emaciated, but with lots of TLC, veterinary care and good food they soon flourish: just look at this beauty! This latest addition to the popular Extreme competition has been made possible thanks to the Montaña para Todos (Mountains for Everyone) collective, whose members organise trips for people with disabilities to ordinarily inaccessible areas such as the summit of El Teide or the Ramblas del Castro nature reserve. Santa Cruz’s

Councillor for Sports, Carlos Correa, proudly spoke about the programme: "With this initiative, we wish to make sport possible for everyone and have taken the opportunity to include this modality in the Santa Cruz Extreme in order to make the wish of many people become a reality. With the adapted Joëlette chairs, we want to make this event a national reference point for disabled sports and its possibilities." A maximum of 20 teams can take part in the race. Three distances are offered to non-disabled athletes: A 13.5km beginners' race, a halfmarathon of 25.8km, and a full marathon of 49.2km. Points from the latter will count towards the Canary Islands Mountain Races Cup (Copa de Canarias de Carreras por Montaña). For all the runs, which take competitors through the rugged Anaga mountains, enormous differences in altitude have to be overcome. For the full marathon there are 3,860m to run uphill, with a total altitude change of 7,750m including the descents: A real challenge that pushes even trained athletes to their limits. Those on the half marathon will cover 1,608 metres of altitude difference and on the beginners’ course it is 670 metres, still quite a hike. The number of participants is limited to 1,000 places. The borough of Los Realejos is on the verge of renovating their section of one of the most outstanding hiking paths in the country as a tourist and sporting attraction. The route leads from the Playa del Socorro beach via Tigaiga, to the Mirador El Lance in Icod el Alto and from there to The Fortaleza, which is located in Teide’s National Park, followed by the last climb via Montaña Blanca to the summit and of course back again. The ascent

covers 27 kilometres, includes a climb to an altitude of 3,718 metres and the descent follows the same route for the return. These 54 kilometres form the highest consecutive gradient hiking path in Spain. The route can be completed in one day and is one of the most attractive in the country. At the same time it’s an extraordinary sporting challenge on which some athletes have already set their personal best times. In 2014, elite athlete David Lutzardo

in signposting this old but long forgotten path and making it safe. In October, the route is expected to be categorised as the one with the highest altitude difference in n Spain.

Swimming

La Gomera to La Palma For ten years, Jonathan García has been working on connecting the seven Canary Islands by swimming and he has already managed most of them. However, the crossing between La Gomera and La Palma was still missing. On September 25, the swimmer will be much closer to his goal. Together with the La Palma sports councillor Raico Arrocha, the head of security Manuel Asensio and the emergencies technician Miguel Hernández, he has been preparing for this great moment since February of this year. He wants to swim from San Sebastián de La Gomera to the beach of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Around 100 kilometres of open sea lie between the two. In addition, strong currents in this part of the Atlantic will make the sporting challenge much more difficult. The swimmer will be accompanied by a security escort, because what is certain is that Jonathan’s safety will take precedence above all. Nevertheless, everyone is eagerly awaiting the great moment and hopes that he will succeed in fulfilling his dream. The attention will be focused on La Palma on that day. n

One of Gran Canaria’s popular roller skating rinks is currently enjoying a complete overhaul. San Bartolomé de Tirajana council is investing €285,500 in updating the rink which is located next to the municipal swimming pool. Time, wind and weather had badly affected the facility, but soon not only its aesthetics will be renewed, but it will also have greater safety measures installed. The renovation is scheduled to take about eight weeks, from which time roller skaters will once again be able to take a spin, and athletes from other disciplines will also be able to enjoy the new sports arena for further activities in the future. n

Huelva - La Gomera regatta Winning captain Jorge Flethes, who was the first participant in this year’s Huelva - La Gomera regatta to arrive at the San Sebastián harbour on September 5 at 7.46am said “This regatta is really something special because it crosses the ocean. “If you have a problem out there, you’re far away from the land and you know you have to solve it yourself.” With a time of 90 hours and 46 minutes he was not able to break last year’s record of 69.5 hours, but he was still satisfied to be the fastest this year. Captain Flethes summed up “We didn’t break anything, nobody was injured and we had a lot of fun. If the grades are still good, everything went perfectly.” He was in command of the Cádiz navybased Sirius VI. There were seven military personnel and five civilian crew members on board. The most difficult thing was to forecast where to catch the best winds in order to be able to sail with full sails whenever possible. The crew alternated every four hours, so there were four hours of duty and four hours of rest. He added “The rest is relative. The boat is hollowed out and simple, so when you rest below deck, every wave or jump sounds like a cannon shot.” About 750 nautical miles lie between the starting point at Playa de La Canaleta in Punta Umbría near Huelva and the Port of San Sebastián in La Gomera, an exciting journey over the ocean waves. In second place the Adrián hotel chain boat sailed in after 111 hours and 40 minutes. It was a clear distance from the winner, but a relatively small distance to the third-placed with Captain Pedro Gonzalo in the boat Gálbula, which reached the finish after 112 hours and 39 minutes. Pillaban followed with 122 hours and one minute, Pantalán Zero with 125 hours and 11 minutes and Matador with 141 hours and four minutes. A total of twelve boats and their crews took part in the regatta. n A small sample, but an immense task.

And another one bites the dust By Chris Todd If the first two performances of the season, two away draws, can be described as reasonable with the following home match against Deportivo as pleasing, the latest set of results can be at best defined as frustrating and the result is that the manager is on his way. It’s far too early to talk of a crisis but manager Etxeberría was certainly feeling the pressure from the media and fans alike. This time, with no drawn-out, “the manager has our complete confidence” (the week before the big elbow), Etxeberría, second chair Jorge Pérez and physical prep specialist Roberto Cabellud are on their way with the club’s sincere thanks ringing hollowly in their ears. Last season the club waited too long to change their manager and when the new boss took control it was too late to make a serious challenge on promotion. This time the club has acted sooner and hopefully the victories will come along soon enough. The team is lacking punch in the final third, the risk taken in signing two strikers in Nano and Naranjo who hardly played last season, has so far backfired. Both young strikers have enjoyed good seasons in the past but are just off the pace and neither has scored yet. I was in Málaga for the match on September 8 and stayed at the same city centre hotel as the players. Without making

excuses I can affirm that it was noisy in the early hours, with party goers and sirens being heard at all hours. Surely this cannot be ideal for the players’ rest before the match? Perhaps an out of town location should be used, coupled with easier travel plans as trips can often involve two flights and a long coach journey. This was always going to be the toughest away day of the season for the blanquiazules. Malaga reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League only a few years ago but here they are plying their trade in the Spanish Second division. They enjoy the biggest budget in the league by far at 27 meuros, in comparison to the CD Tenerife budget this season which has been set at just eight meuros. The Malaguistas are odds on for a quick return to the top flight but Tenerife made them work hard for all three points. The opening minutes were cagey, a fierce thunderstorm before the match made playing conditions tricky and neither side looked comfortable. However, as is often the case with Ten-

erife away games, the team compete well for the first half an hour, then concede around the 30th minute mark and are always trying to catch up for the rest of the game. Málaga duly broke the deadlock on 35 minutes and went into the break with a thin lead. The second half was a repeat of the first in many ways, Tenerife pushed for the equaliser and the home team was happy to play on the counter break cheered on by over 15,000 fans. When Suso hit the post for Tenerife on 80 minutes you just knew that it was not going to be our day. The final score of 1-0 to Malaga was slightly unfair as Tenerife probably deserved a point but how many times have we n said that in the past?
