At the end of September, the ninth parrot congress of the Loro Parque Foundation took place in the Congress Hall, Puerto de La Cruz. It is organised every four years by the Foundation and brings together the parrot-loving world with the best luminaries as lecturers, and numerous parrot lovers from across the globe as avid attendees. This year there were over 800 congress participants from 47 different countries, with a delegation of 60 from India alone. It was the most successful parrot congress in the world. Hunger strike against mega port project The cruise market is booming without a doubt and the Canary Islands are benefiting from it. The ports of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are regularly visited by the ocean giants that bring thousands of day tourists to the Islands. To a lesser extent this also happens at the ports of Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera. But how far can the hunt for cruising tourists go? And above all, up to what point does this make sense? These questions arise when looking at Agaete, an idyllic fishing village at the northwest end of Gran Canaria. Puerto de Las Nieves was originally built there with the promise that it would become a fishing and yachting harbour. Today the Fred Olsen ferry arrives several times a day. the sea. The project, estimated at €44.6 million, will receive 85 per cent support from the European Commission's FEDER fund. But neither the Agaete Council nor the local residents want the megaproject. The Agaete Council wanted a citizen survey. However, the Canary Islands Government responded that it was not appropriate to make such a request to the Central Government for a public vote "because the necessary requirements have not been met. That is to say, that the matter has no relevance to the interests of the residents; and that this matter is within the responsibility of the Council itself." Instead, the project was waved through by 24 to 19 votes with five abstentions at the end of

September. Several local platforms such as Salvar Agaete and Bioagaete Cultural Solidario, whose initiator Antonio Hernández, known as Rastatun, went on a hunger strike from September 16 to 27, are fighting against the project with all their might. He lost six and a half kilos and had to give up the strike because of extreme hypertension and acute kidney problems. The activist explained "I stopped for health reasons, but only to regain strength, because our struggle continues. We will do everything we can to stop this construction, which is nothing more than speculation and the sale of our natural beauty. They should invest in agriculture, in renewable energies such as wind, sun and water, but not in a port that nobody needs. Where should cruise tourists go after they disembark in Agaete? To Las Palmas, that makes sense. It’s open to them to explore the city or go on excursions. The project is being sold to us as job creation, which was already the case when the current port was built, and yet the unemployment rate in the region is rising. We need sustainability, because that is the future of

tourism. This is precisely why the Canary Islands Government is pushing for construction to begin this year, because next year only sustainable projects will be supported by the EU, so the Agaete Mega Port would be off the table. That is what we are fighting for, including through submissions to the European Parliament. These millions should be used to promote more sensible projects. Why support something today that is no longer eligible for support tomorrow?" Instead of preserving the fishing idyll of Agaete, millions are literally being dumped in the sea for a project that nobody in the area wants and whose benefits are allegedly more than questionable. "We have the largest port with a connection to West Africa less than 40 kilometres away in Las Palmas. It makes no sense to build an infrastructure on this scale in Agaete. And even more so in front of a biosphere reserve that belongs to the last virgin landscapes of Gran Canaria", with these words even the former president of the port of La Luz in Las Palmas, Luis Ibarra, speaks from his long experience n against the expansion.

Rewarding honour Continued from front page Whilst all this was going on, the Loro Parque Premio Gorila Awards also took place. This year, the award recognises the decades of dedication of the author Rosemary Low, who has published numerous articles and books worldwide that have been translated into many languages. She was the first to write a book on the conservation of parrots. Entitled Endangered Parrots, it appeared in 1984 and was reissued ten years later in a revised version. She is currently working on a book that will give an overview of the conservation of parrots over four decades. She is very involved in conservation projects and has been invited to numerous conferences in Europe, Australia, Brazil and the USA. During the first international congress of the Loro Parque Foundation which took place in 1986, she collected donations for the Imperial Amazon parrot. Since then, she has been on the road again and again to generate funds for species conservation projects. She has owned her own parrots since 1958. She says “We are very privileged to enjoy these sensitive, impressive and intelligent creatures.” Her many years of experience and profound knowledge have made her an icon in the professional world. The Premio Gorila is a recognition for her life’s work. The award ceremony took place this time at the Adán Martín Auditorium in Santa Cruz and was celebrated during a gala dinner for over a thousand invited guests. n

E-mail scam

There are currently e-mails in circulation that are sent specifically to companies, among other entities. The company is told that the sender has cracked the recipient’s computer and that this would allow the sender to place obscene photos on the screen, which would show the user naked. In addition the company is told that the sender has information about pornographic web pages which the receiver is allegedly said to have visited. The letter then demands payment of €450 to a numbered account within 24 hours. If this requirement is not met, the sender threatens to send these photos and the website information to all customers, friends, employees and family. These e-mails come from scammers who want to get their hands on fast money by bluffing. Anyone who receives them should report this to the police. The Guardia Civil in La Orotava is already aware of this scam. n

In his laudatory speech, Tenerife's tourism councillor Alberto Bernabé emphasised the excellent work of the Loro Parque Group, whose commitment and role have always provided positive news. The constant innovation with new attractions every year is also a sign of continuous development and commitment. The mayor of Puerto de La Cruz, Lope Afonso joked "Just in time for the inauguration we even have African weather". He also underlined the importance of the Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Foundation for the city and the island. "The two see themselves as an institution, which is a kind of message from the animals, to draw attention to the endangerment of threatened species. Loro Parque is for us a kind of ambassador for Tenerife, because through its activities we are always in the focus of local, national and international media”, he explained. Three drownings

In mid-September, members of the Canary public were shaken as three people died on consecutive days due to drowning. On September 17, a 70-yearold woman drowned in the pool of a holiday resort at Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, and on the following day a 78-year-old woman was already dead when she was pulled out of the water at Playa del Reducto in Arrecife in Lanzarote. Most shocking was the case of the four-yearold Presley S., who drowned during the afternoon of the next day in the pool of the Paradise Park Hotel in Los Cristianos. British red-top media like The Sun shocked readers with headlines like "Tenerife's swimming pools are among the most dangerous in Europe". The hotel management deeply regretted the incident and asserted that it had been a tragic accident. Two lifeguards were on

duty that day and an ambulance crew was on site within a few minutes. Nevertheless, the little boy's parents are demanding clarification. The British expert Wilson Allen, who has been working in an advisory capacity for tour operators for decades, blames defective pools and inattentive lifeguards. He told The Sun "According to eyewitnesses, the lifeguard was talking to

young women when the accident happened. Many times I have seen that lifeguards took their responsibilities lightly and were inattentive. Unfortunately, every year we receive reports of children who have drowned in pools abroad. This year there were six deaths in Spanish pools between July and September." He, too, calls for clarification so that the parents can rest.

Despite the unquestionable tragedy, it must also be pointed out that the presence of lifeguards alone does not release parents from the responsibility of supervising their children. In mid-July a little Polish girl survived a visit to Playa de La Arena in Puerto de Santiago thanks to the efforts of the lifeguards. While the parents of the four-year-old were about 60 metres away having a siesta on their deck chairs, the four-year-old was playing in the water. She was caught by a wave and pulled into the sea. It was only thanks to the attention of the lifeguards that she was pulled out of the Atlantic in good health. Most bathing accidents occur on the beach and not in the pools where the safety standards are higher and are checked regularly. Nevertheless, children in and around the pool must also be supervised by their n adult carers.

Dogs with muzzles taped up

Officers from the Guardia Civilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Seprona Environmental Protection Unit in Gran Canaria recently filed a complaint against a woman suspected of continual animal cruelty. An anonymous report sent to the police by e-mail via the citizensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; portal reported two German Shepherds whose muzzles were regularly taped up to prevent them from barking. The police followed up this complaint and found out that in a warehouse at Ingenio two canines who were actually kept as guard dogs had their muzzles taped up. During the police inspection they found both dogs tied to a chain anchored by a steel cable. One of them had his muzzle taped as reported, but the other had apparently freed himself from it by his own efforts. The person in charge admitted that she regularly used the tape to prevent the neighbours from being disturbed by the barking. The woman was charged with repeated n abuse. The dogs were handed over to their owner.

Music, art and the chance to interact between the artists and audience is the cornerstone of this popular festival, which is a window for the enjoyment of all kinds of art, especially music, and a space for learning and the exchange of ideas. La Casona de San Luis was the base where the artistic skills and abilities of the population could be developed, whilst enjoying top level groups and artists. Participants enjoyed a Family Gospel Workshop with Ezequiel Barrios, a funny, wordplay Talk-Concert by Yeray Rodríguez Quintana, a Poetry Slam, a Collaborative Mural, the Sinfony Project Workshop with L’Rollin Clarinet Band, local area orchestras and the SUMA-T Workshop with Bloko. The second Festival de Tenerife takes off this autumn, with an extensive programme of 26 performing arts shows including theatre, dance, opera and circus, as well as street performances. Adeje Council is making every effort to modernise the efficiency of the borough's services and transform itself into an intelligent holiday destination. Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said "We will make every effort to ensure that the profits generated by tourism and the investments made reach the citizens of our borough and improve their quality of life". The 38 or so projects put together in a plan by the council have also convinced

the Spanish government, the European Union and Agenda Digital in Spain. With a score of 8.13, Adeje received the highest number of points among the boroughs in the country. This is why around 60 per cent of the estimated €6 million needed to implement the projects will be covered by European regional funding. In addition to 25 other Spanish communities, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Puerto de la Cruz in the Canary Islands will also benefit from this fund. Adeje's Tour-

ism Councillor Ermitas Moreira explained that they would be developing an “intelligent platform” which would “reorganise the municipal services structure in a more integrated manner, using a method of digitally monitoring public spaces. As a tourism borough we want to reduce our emissions and optimise the resources we use, which is why we are working to create ways of combating the effects of climate change too”, commented the Mayor. Large investments in innovative projects and systems will improve the quality of life for all and take Adeje into the 21st century as a modern, high-standard holin day destination.

Cruising season opens

New gangway for passengers

In mid-September, the passengers of the cruising giant Mein Schiff 1 were the first to cross one of the two new mobile gangways at the cruise terminal in Santa Cruz. The floating holiday hotel had brought 2,879 passengers and 1,109 employees to Tenerife’s capital. The handling was smooth, fast and modern. With this innovation, which was announced as a separate project at the opening of the terminal at the port of Santa Cruz in September 2016, another innovative element in the handling of cruise passengers has been put into operation. With this modern installation, the Santa Cruz port will not only be a stop-off port but also increasingly a cruising base, in other words, a location for passengers’ check-in and check-out. The movable arms can be adapted to the height of different decks or to the tide, so guests can comfortably leave their n ship and start their exploration of Tenerife.

Unique sculptures

Exceptional work with timber Simon Capelen is a sculptor, originally from the Isle of Man, specialising in timber products. He explains “I love the feel of wood, it’s versatility and that every piece is unique”. Now living in Piedra Hincada, he also teaches wood carving, sculpture and traditional hand-cut lettering. Although much of his work is abstract, figurative and pattern-work are also included. His crisp letter-cutting lends itself to house and shop signs. Recently, Simon produced a hand carved cross for a local church. Previous commissions include public and private sculptures, trophies, signage and bespoke furniture with hand-cut inscriptions. The image is of a 1.5 metre tall sculpture he named Star Spiral. It’s made from a single piece of sycamore and designed to be lit from within at night. A 34-year-old man and his 37-year-old wife, both Spaniards, and a 22-year-old Colombian woman were arrested by National Police officers in La Laguna in mid September. She told the police that she had only recently travelled from Colombia to Tenerife and that she had given birth to a baby girl at the University Hospital in La Laguna on September 7. She explained that this baby was the reason for the trip. The young woman had only discovered in the fifth month of her pregnancy that she was expecting, so an abortion had been impossible. She was looking for an adoption and contacted a couple in Tenerife via the Internet. The vessel sank off the coast on January 13 five decades earlier and ten people, seven crew members and three passengers, lost their lives. Most of them came from the district of San Telmo, where the

Monastery didn’t report teacher

Child abuse by monk Marcos J.D., a former teacher and monk of the Order that runs the Colegios La Salle schools, is accused of sexually harassing five of his former students by WhatsApp in 2015. He had apparently sent the young people photos of his genitals, combined with obscene messages, and asked them to do the same. The young monk was then working at the Colegio La Salle Antúnez school in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The parents of the pupils concerned informed the monastic school management of the news. A complaint was not filed by the school’s management, but the monk was transferred to the La Salle school in Toledo. Six months later Marcos left the Order Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas (Order of the Christian Schools) for “personal reasons”. However, the parents did not want to let it rest there. They reported the monk to the public prosecutor’s office in Las Palmas. In April last year the suspect was arrested. In consultation with the public prosecutor, he has now agreed to a two-year prison sentence (four months and 24 days per pupil harassed). The sentence also includes five years on probation, during which Marcos J.D. must join a sexual re-education programme. In addition, for six years he is not allowed to accept any work involving under-age children. The young monk has agreed to the prosecutor’s proposal. Thus the victims are saved having to testify in court during a trial. But Marcos J.D. is not the only case in Spain. In Madrid, the public prosecutor’s office is demanding 155 years imprisonment for Pedro Antonio R.L. for sexual abuse. The former coordinator of the La Salle Nuestra Señora Maravillas primary schools in Madrid is said to have sexually abused 14 minors and four adults several times between 2013 and 2016. He has also produced and distributed child pornography material in seven cases. He used covert cameras and spy equipment and mainly took advantage of summer camps, school trips or journeys to India for his sexual assaults. He is also said to have sexually abused Maravilla’s pupils n several times in the school’s bathrooms.

The Parque Marítimo César Manrique in Santa Cruz has just enjoyed its best summer since it was opened. During this year's holiday season from June 22 to September 9, the popular swimming pool and leisure complex achieved record figures. A total of 227,436 visitors, almost 23,000 more than last year, took advantage of the landscaped bathing option in the centre of the city. During this time, July in particular was stronger than ever before. In the seventh month of the year alone, 100,211 people visited the bathing paradise. Compared with July 2017, this represents an increase of 27 per cent. At the same time,

It bears the unmistakable stamp of its Lanzaroteño architect, César Manrique, and was inaugurated in 1995. The striking bathing landscape connects the city with the sea and is characterised by the contrast between black volcanic rock, crystal clear blue water, green palm groves and the luminous white auditorium. It opens daily in the summer from 10am to 7pm, and in the autumn and winter from 10am to 6pm. Animal charities’ round up Calendar launch K9 have announced the launch of our 2019 calendar! This year we decided to pay homage to the lovely animals adopted from K9 throughout the years, which now live happy lives in loving homes. In order to pick which beautiful animals would be featured, we asked our supporters to send in their favourite pictures of their ex-K9 pets. We received loads of submissions and it was amazing for us to be reminded of how many furry friends we have helped throughout the years. We selected a judge to objectively choose 12 lovely animals to be featured in the 12 months of the year. But we couldn’t just include those few, so made a

Acción del Sol A friend of the refuge decided she was in a position to adopt a dog. There are so many gorgeous dogs there and she thought she knew exactly what she was looking for: a small dog that was a bit older. Yet, as she walked around, one dog stood out from all the rest and snuggled up to her hand through the cage. She had been dumped on the streets like a piece of rubbish, had recently had puppies and was very thin. She was a medium-sized pointer - exactly what the visitor wasn’t looking for. But it was love at first sight and the lovely Perdi, as she is now known, has settled into her new home and is thriving. She has already proved her worth by warning her owner that there was a stranger wandering around the complex and barking to scare him off. We have more than 200 dogs at the refuge patiently waiting for a new home. The love from a dog is unconditional until the day they pass. They are very therapeutic for helping us all, as well. The daily cruelty that we see of dogs arriving in extremely bad condition is heart wrenching but with our dedicated team of staff and veterinary care the dogs soon forget their horrendous past and still trust us humans to love and care for them. Please do come and visit us to see if one of them is the one for you. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, heartworm- and flea-free, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife.

Extreme sport

A thousand kilometres across India Solidarity with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation in India is the basis of this extraordinary mission, on which three Canarians set off on the first of October and which will last until the end of the month. They are running a daily marathon, that is 43 kilometres a day, from New Delhi through Vanarasi, Calcutta, Bombay, Manmad, Hyderabad and Anantapur, to the Foundation's main camp and the hospital in Bathalapalli. The sportsman Juan Manuel Viera from Las Palmas got to know the work of the Foun-

dation in 2015 together with the photographer Jaime Ramos from La Laguna. Since then, appreciating what the Foundation (founded in 1969 by Vicente Ferrer in Anantapur)

has been doing, he is trying to support the projects in his own way. Topics covered by the foundation include education, health, the environment, women, the disabled, ecology and fair trade.

These include sponsorships for 200 children and the construction of the village of Sundaraiah, where people currently live in tents under the most basic conditions. They really need houses with electricity and water. He has found that running helps. After three marathon runs, the interest grew and grew. Last year there were already 120 participants from Spain and India at the start. Thanks to the attention the marathons attracted, 629 children's sponsorships were arranged in the last three years and €178,000 was collected, which the foundation can use for various projects. The runup, as it were, to the fourth marathon in January of next year, is intended to establish even more solidarity relationships. Juan Manuel and Faustino have been running since they were young and take part in extreme cross-country and n mountain races.

Acro Flyers pioneers of the air Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo recently welcomed the Acro Flyers team from San Miguel de Abona, a sports club unique on the island and dedicated to gymnastic acrobatics. Jorge Gutiérrez, the Santa Cruz Local Police shooting instructor, has achieved good results in various competitions in recent weeks and is currently ninth in the Spanish rankings. This position would give him a good chance of representing Spain at the forthcoming European Championships to be held in Belgrade in September 2019. Among other things, Gutiérrez took part in a qualifying competition in Huesca, in north-eastern Spain involving the best marksmen in Spain, the majority of whom were members of the armed forces. Among almost 240 participants and after a tough twelve-hour shooting competition, he secured eighth place. At the I Open Internacional de Gran Canaria at the second level he was proclaimed overall champion in the open shooting category. A total of 58 marksmen took part in the championship at Punta Camello. After participating in a competition in Madrid and wanting to participate in national shooting competitions in the U.S., Jorge wants to gain more experience at an international level. His aim is to get to the European Championship n in Belgrade next year representing his country.

John Elrick Malcolm and his wife Sandra Shaw live at Caleta de Fuste in Fuerteventura and are supported by the community of Antigua in their sporting ambitions. And rightly so, because the couple is celebrating great international success and thus carrying the name of the Island and its excellent golfing conditions around the globe. Just recently they reached sixth place in Japan in the classification for the World Championship in Italy and will be at the starting line when the World Championship in Golf for the Blind is held at the Parco de’ Medici Golf Club in Rome from the end of September until the first week of October. This is not a standard golf tournament, but features the best sight-impaired golfers. That is why it is so important for Malcolm that his wife Sandra is a partner at his side. She gives him important information, how far is the distance to the hole, where is the ball, how strong is the wind and from which direction is it blowing? But the team is only complete with Lola, a guide dog for the blind, who leads her master calmly and safely across the course. At the World Cup in Italy, 80 players from the International Blind Golf Association from countries around the globe will take part. They include Australia, Canada, the USA, Korea, England and the hosting country Italy. The couple from Fuerteventura will use their equipment, T-shirts and caps to promote their Island and its excellent golf courses, such as the Salinas Gold and the excellent facilities of the Meeting Point Hotels. New boss Oltra leads Tenerife to first win By Chris Todd 29/09/2018 CD Tenerife 1: 0 Cádiz The Blanquiazules recorded their first victory of the season after a 1-0 victory over Cádiz. It certainly wasn’t pretty but after the team’s slow start to the campaign it was all about winning the three points. Returning to the club after a gap of eight years was manager Jose Luis Oltra, he was a legend in these parts after winning a glorious promotion with Tenerife back in 2009 and hopes are high that he can repeat that soon. Oltra had taken the place of Etxeberria who was sacked a couple of weeks before, some say harshly. The story goes that CD Tenerife was not entirely happy with Etxeberria at the tail end of last season and they approached Oltra to take charge. The problem was that Oltra was waiting on a job in the top flight as manager of newly promoted Huesca. That fell through at the last hour but Tenerife had already committed to another year with Etxeberria as the summer was progressing. Needless to say the board did not wait too long to react to the first run of bad results and as Oltra was still available the change was made quickly.

Nano celebrates his first goal back at the club against Cádiz

Against Cádiz the day started on a festive note as supporters of Cádiz and CD Tenerife joined in a celebration to mark the great friendship between the two clubs. As kick-off approached expectations were high as over 10.000 supporters made their way to the Heliodoro Stadium. The first half started well for Tenerife and it was clear to see that the players were keen to impress their new boss. The problem so far this season has been

the two main strikers Nano and Naranjo being a yard behind the pace and lacking confidence. However there are signs that the dynamic may be changing as last week Naranjo scored a cracking freekick against Cordoba, and this week against Cádiz it was Nano who found the net for Tenerife after 32 minutes. At the break Tenerife deservedly held the lead on the balance of play but the second half saw a more ambitious Cádiz side seek an equal-

iser. It was a frustrating half for the faithful. Cádiz ran the show and Tenerife failed to keep hold of the ball, it was a case of holding on to the slim lead. However despite all the pressure Cádiz failed to create any clear cut chances and the blanquiazules held on for the important victory. Next up for CD Tenerife is a trip to Mallorca for the clash on October 6 at 3pm. A week later they are back at home to face Lugo on October 14 with n a midday kick-off.
