Ricardo did it to give courage to others On the night before October 6, the sportsman Ricardo Miguel García Castro from La Palma hardly slept. No wonder he was so excited because he had big plans for the first Saturday in October. “This is usually the case when I have set myself a big goal and am about to implement it. In addition, there were delays in the final preparation phase that called the challenge into question,” said Ricardo. Then it was time: At 8:28am he left Club Náutico in Santa Cruz de La Palma on water skis to head for the neighbouring island of La Gomera, where he actually arrived at 11:55am in San Sebastián after covering about 75 nautical miles. It had to be this day, because he wanted to bring a
bouquet of red roses to the patron saint of the island for her feast of honour. He had carried it from La Palma and, with tears in his eyes, threw it into the sea in front of Puntallana, a gesture that touched many. Until then the journey was almost without complications. The ocean lay in front of him calm as a lake. Only at Los Órganos did wind and waves appear, which made the crossing a little more complicated. The crossing was an enormous feat of strength, because Ricardo did not wear a towing belt, but only held on to the leash that connected him to his tugboat by his own muscle power. An example for everyone He dedicated this victory to all those who, like him, were thrown off track by an accident. He wanted to show them that much is possible with willpower and improving on yourself and that you can reclaim your life's dream despite adverse circumstances. On August 15, 2015, he repeated this message by travelling from Magaluf in Mallorca to Ibiza. Despite bad weather conditions, he managed to put the 60 nautical miles behind him and reach Ibiza. On August 13, 2016 there was a new destination. He started in Seville on his water skis and headed along the river Guadalquivir to Puerto
de Santa María at the southern tip of Spain near Cádiz. And now, two years later, he wanted to do it again. With this pilgrimage on water skis he wanted to encourage people in critical situations not to give up, to hope and to fight for their recovery. "Take the good that happens to you, learn from the bad and continue. Even if what happens to us seems hard, we must learn from each experience and find the message it contains. The accident took ten per cent of my physical strength from me, but gave me all the more psychological strength," sums up the man who calls on everyone never to give up and sets an example himself. n

My vocation in the public service brought me to politics, but my passion and my work belongs primarily to medicine and research. That’s why I couldn’t be happier”, stated Alarcó after the conference. He also proposed that health be enshrined as a fundamental global right. Medical care is a means to introduce fairness and sustainability and to make world politics more ethical. The costs should be borne jointly by all nations. The proposal met with so much approval that it is now to be presented to the United Nations and the World Health Organisation (WHO). In March last year Alarcó also took part in the open peace process in Colombia. He spoke with several politicians from different parties in the country, plus government representatives and lawyers. In addition, he participated in various meetings in the so-called transitional zone of the n FARC in San José, Bogotá and Medellín.

In his dinghy he was accompanied by rescue crews and, for the first time, by his four-year-old daughter, who proudly encouraged her father to perform at his best. When he arrived in San Sebastián, he was taken ashore by a Red Cross water cycle, as the boats were unable to approach Playa de La Punta in La Gomera's capital due to the swell. On land, friends and family, an enthusiastic audience, and even some tourists who were surprised at the extreme athlete's performance, awaited him. Ricardo has dedicated this success to the patron saint, Virgen de Guadalupe of La Gomera and the islanders. The reason for this is that the islanders were the first to believe in him even

"Life means change... ... and the one who can best adapt to change will survive," said Ricardo after his tragic accident in 2012, because the sun did not always shine on this athlete. Ricardo García has often attracted attention with his
sporting achievements on his water skis. In 2005, he connected all seven islands and covered almost 188 nautical miles on his boards. A year later, he crossed 62 nautical miles of the Atlantic from Punta de Teno in Tenerife to Tazacorte on the west coast of La Palma. In 2007, he circumnavigated his island of La Palma, covering 72 nautical miles, and in 2008, he
conquered 242 nautical miles between Lanzarote and La Palma with a single stopover in Tenerife. In 2012, the Palmero suffered a tragic accident, which almost cost him his life. He was run over and suffered a painful recovery process. He also overcame this in record time and was back on his water skis on October 7, 2013, to sail 56 nautical miles from Ibiza to Jávea near Alicante.

Easyjet: Steward causes discontent
No in-flight breastfeeding? Kelly Edgson-Payne felt publicly humiliated recently when flying Easyjet from London Gatwick to Fuerteventura with husband Ross and their four children, when she was asked to stop breastfeeding by a male attendant. The mother had fed her one year-old-son, Lex, on takeoff each of the 16 times they had flown with Easyjet over the previous year – without a problem. “It’s just absolutely crazy that I was told that I couldn’t feed him - crazy, and really embarrassing for me”, the mother informed British newspaper The Mirror. Upon landing in Fuerteventura the family complained at the Easyjet desk, where they were assured that women are more than welcome to breastfeed babies on their flights, as long as it is done “discreetly”. As compensation, the family was offered a ₤25 discount voucher. n
Storm over but sea takes fatalities
All threats of Hurricane Leslie battering the Canary Islands were off once it eventually swept up to the Iberian Peninsula as a tropical storm, leaving a trail of damage and hundreds of thousands of people without electricity. Here in the archipelago the tail end of it brought some rain and fast winds, over a weekend which saw two tragedies and various disruptions. On Saturday afternoon, in the south of Gran Canaria at Playa La Lajita, Arguineguín, in the borough of Mogán, three people were caught out by the high waves. A 60-year-old and two minors were in distress and were brought to the safety of shore by private individuals on jet bikes. Unfortunately, it was too late for the elderly gentleman who, as well as suffering a head injury, also went into cardiac arrest before the emergency helicopter could arrive. Resuscitation efforts by the emergency crews were unsuccessful.

Black Saturday with two drowned On the same Saturday afternoon, 25-year-old Luis Rubio Pedrosa lost his life while he was underwater fishing at the Faro de la Entallada near Tuineje in Fuerteventura. When his father had seen nothing of him after 20 minutes, he became worried and went searching for Luis, finding him on the seabed. Though he man-
aged to pull him ashore, the young man had also suffered a cardiac arrest. He was taken by emergency helicopter to hospital but, sadly, could not be resuscitated either. Luis was an experienced apnea diver who had already taken part in Canarian and Spanish free diving competitions. Only three months ago he had bought a
boat in order to fish professionally. Unfortunately, his dream of the future came to a tragic and abrupt end. Amongst other weatherrelated incidents, the Sunday saw seven flights diverted from La Palma because of the conditions and 23 departures and 18 arrivals had to be n cancelled.

ered a criminal gang which is said to be responsible for car-
rying out large-scale robberies in Tenerife using violence and firearms. Via investigations under the heading of Operation Philarguria, Six people between the ages of 25 and 32 have been arrested and accused of belonging to a criminal organisation, committing six cases of armed robbery, stealing a vehicle and several counts of driving without a licence. As part of the enquiry, officials searched eight apartments in Santa Cruz, Adeje, Granadilla de Abona and Tacoronte. Explorations turned up 29 mobile phones, 18 electronic devices, several pieces of jewellery, 16 watches, three vehicles and €8,640 in cash, as well as tools typically used in burglaries, clothing utilised in the raids and small quantities
Biomarine 2018 in Cascais
Laboratory for a Blue Economy Gran Canaria Island Council, represented by Councillor Raúl García Brink, participated in the Biomarine 2018 conference held in Cascais, Portugal, during early October, where the island was presented as a ‘laboratory for a blue economy’. The ‘blue’ refers to markets that are associated with the sea – an area of interest to various fields within biotechnology. The conference was attended by over 300 experts, and much of it focused on marine algae. Industries such as cosmetics, phar-
maceuticals, food supplements and animal and human nutrition were all represented. Councillor Brink took the opportunity to point out Gran Canaria’s advantages and ongoing projects. For instance, Arinaga is currently investing €4.1 million in an experimental area covering 70,000 square metres, including €1.6 million on the world's first high-tech marine incubator. The councillor also spoke about the work of Plocan, the Canary Islands Oceanic Platform, which maintains both onshore and off-
shore installations and experimental laboratories that can be used all year round thanks to the mild climate. Various other initiatives in the fields of blue industry and renewable energies were also discussed. The authorities in Gran Canaria are feeling hopeful. They see sufficient potential in their own resources to become an international reference in the field of blue economies and seem to be setting developments in motion to fully exploit these capabilin ties for the future.

In one of said crimes, the perpetrators attacked a jewellery store in Tacoronte, in broad daylight and armed with guns, and made off with a large amount of jewellery and cash. Several eyewitnesses filmed the incident with their mobile phones, recordings which contributed important clarification of the crimes. The getaway vehicle used in the robbery
turned out to be stolen from San Isidro on May 13, where it was also involved in a case of armed robbery from a private residence. None of the gang members have a driving licence, so also stand accused of violation of road safety. The gang received leads on possible targets from various informers, including people based in the Spanish Peninsula. Information included opening hours,
shop workers’ habits, and other relevant clues. One recommendation is even said to have come from an inmate of the Tenerife II prison, regarding a well-known recreational venue in the south of the island. However, this particular attack did not take place. In addition to the theft in Tacoronte, the gang is associated with various others in La Oron tava and San Isidro.

Rising wave of migrants
In Haría in the north of Lanzarote these men reached the safety of dry land again
In the first nine months of this year, 30 migrant boats reached the Canarian coasts, 19 more than in the same period of 2017. In the last two weeks of September alone, seven boats, socalled pateras, with 119 people on board, reached the Canary Islands, two boats arrived on the coasts of Gran Canaria and one in Lanzarote with 48 passengers on board. The last quarter of the year began in the same way for the Islands. On October 1, 33 men from
the Maghreb reached northern Lanzarote in two boats. One of them found dry land at the Playa de La Garita in the borough of Haría by the passengers' own efforts. Of the 13 on board, six indicated they were still minors. A little later, the captain of a ferry to the neighbouring island of La Graciosa spotted another boat with 20 people on board, which arrived at Playa de Famara. Another 22 people were rescued by the lifeboat service off the coast of
Gran Canaria. And, on October 8, a boat carrying twelve minors reached Playa del Papelillo beach in the borough of Teguise, Lanzarote.
Increasing numbers According to the Spanish Ministry for the Interior, 659 immigrants had reached the Canary Islands by September 30. This is 522 more than in the same period in 2017 and a massive increase of 381 per cent. By
the end of September, 41,594 refugees had been admitted throughout Spain, 36,674 of whom arrived by sea. Most migrants who chose a route across the ocean arrived in the Balearic Islands or on the coasts of the Spanish Peninsula (35,218), 524 used the enclave of Melilla and 273 the Spanish city of Ceuta, which lie on the Moroccan mainland off the Straits of Gibraltar. Especially in the summer months, when the ocean is calmer, many decide to try their luck over the sea. On the Spanish Peninsula coasts and Balearic Islands, the number of pateras has almost doubled from 728 boats in the first nine months of 2017 to 1,449 this year. By land, 4,920 immigrants reached Spanish territory, storming the barriers between Morocco and Spanish territory in the two Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. The more the Mediterranean routes are closed, the more dangerous the Atlantic routes become. In Spain, migrants from North and West Africa n are the main arrivals.
New notary for Santiago del Teide
Young and just qualified
At 24 years of age, Alba Aula Méndez from Valle Gran Rey in La Gomera is one of the youngest notaries in Spain. She recently graduated with one of the highest grades across the board. In less than two and a half years she has passed all the necessary examinations and now she has opened an office in Avenida Marítimo in Puerto de Santiago. The mayor of Santiago del Teide, Emilio Navarro, and the borough secretary, Argeo Manuel Tosco, supported her decision, explaining “It’s nice that we now also have a notary’s office in our borough, so that our citizens no longer have to travel to other areas for notarial matters”. Alba Aula Méndez deliberately chose the borough in the northwest of the island. “I think that this part of the island n has great potential for the future”, she said.

The Guardia Civil has uncovered a network, based in 17 prisons throughout Spain, whose members used their sentences to recruit IS fighters from amongst their fellow inmates. A total of 25 prisoners have been identified as belonging to the group, among them an inmate of the Las Palmas II prison in Juan Grande on Gran Canaria. contracts of employees who work more than indicated, such as those working full-time on half-day contracts. Cristina Válido, Canary Island Councillor for Labour, Social Policy and Housing explained "We want to ensure that quality jobs are created and maintained. We want to counter the abuse of employees. In the first nine months of this year alone, more than 10,000 workers have benefited from the inspections by adapting their contracts or even getting a contract." Last year, during a similar campaign, 2,719 employees were discovered who didn’t
have a valid employment contract or who were not registered with the social security system. The Territorial Director, Francisco Guindín, stated that 80,000 announcements of a review had been sent across Spain to randomly selected companies. Around 63 per cent responded by admitting irregularities and modifying their employees' employment contracts. Unfortunately, paying incorrect social security contributions is still a common practice, one which has long-term repercussions when it comes n to pensions.

ASCAV shares the experience of HomeAway The Association for Holiday Rentals in the Canary Islands, ASCAV, advises its members and advocates a legally fair regulation on the Islands. At the moment these regulations do not exist. Many landlords are in a grey area. Despite the uncertain legal situation for holiday rentals, in which both owners and rental agents are located in the Canary Islands, the HomeAway organisation sees it positively. In cooperation with the Spanish University of Salamanca, the staff of the Platform for Holiday Rentals produced a statistical report which speaks for the liberation of this niche of the market.
Study balance Over the past two years, holiday rentals have generated sales of around €54 million. It has thus become a sector that has
had a noticeable positive economic impact. The average stay of foreign visitors in the Canary Islands is 11.8 nights and 2.9 persons. With regard to the average stay of Spanish residents in private holiday homes, an average of 4.8 nights and 3.1 persons were registered. The majority of those who stay in holiday homes are couples and families. Among foreigners, it’s 42 per cent couples and 40 per cent families, while among Spaniards the picture is slightly different. Among them, almost 65 per cent of holidaymakers who fall back on the more private framework of the holiday home are couples, while only just under a quarter are families. On average, foreign users of holiday homes spend around €4,179 per stay according to HomeAway. Of this, €1,161 are spent on overnight accom-
modation and the rest on other costs such as hire cars, purchases, restaurant visits or similar. For Spaniards, the figures are somewhat lower due to the shorter length of stay. On average, they pay €419 for the overnight stay and €1,810 for the additional costs. It’s worth noting that almost 35 per cent say they use shops near the holiday property. Almost half of these holidaymakers also repeatedly use the same accommodation. The general satisfaction of these

holidaymakers is 4.2 out of a total of five points. In terms of preferences, the two groups of visitors differ considerably: while the national holidaymaker is drawn primarily to the metropolises and central holiday areas, the international holiday home guest prefers accommodation outside of these areas. More than three-quarters of Spaniards prefer to stay in apartments. The same applies to
about 47 per cent of foreign visitors. Immediately following are holiday homes, which are preferred by eleven per cent of Spaniards and 35 per cent of foreigners. Since the majority of them are couples and families, there are rarely any problems with the neighbours. According to HomeAway, 98 per cent of holidaymakers experience living together with their neighbours n as positive.

Opera (e)Studio promotes the professional development of young artists who have just completed their academic careers or are at the beginning of their careers, by bringing them together to form a new group in which, among other things, musical and scenic interpretation, style, corporal expression and naturalness are practiced. Will there be a repetition? “Yes, because it is a project that we have been pursuing for three years and this year there will be performances in the north and south of the island and soon in Santa Cruz. really unique and very complex. Nevertheless, we managed to bring the opera very close to the audience. This was also a unique experience for me. I learned an incredible amount, not only in dealing with the artists with whom I have been working for years, but also with the entire team at the auditorium, which I have learned to appreciate even more.”

A great challenge for a 25-yearold, which he mastered wonderfully and this became a springboard for him. This season he is leading Boheme at San Carlo in Naples, a fact that fills us with great pride. His performance at Opera de Tenerife turned out to be a trampoline for him to draw attention from the opera scene and conquer it. It was exactly the same with the directors Silvia Paoli and Nicola Berlofa, who made their debut here and are now in demand as artists. We reward talent, sacrifice and hard work. Therefore, if we had to give the Ópera de Tenerife project a motto, it would be: study, willingness to make sacrifices and n overcoming oneself.”

Apart from that, what other memories do you associate with the last season? “In this context, I would like to highlight in particular the musical and stage directors from this cycle. We had great conductors like Michelle Mariotti, Jader Bignamini, Alessandro Palumbo and Oliver Díaz. A good example is Alessandro Palumbo, who took the baton

achino Rossini, who was a wonderful composer. Composing operas was like baking bread for him. He always oriented himself on the trends of his time, the beginning of the 19th century. In other words, the operas were directed towards the beautiful voices of the protagonists and the orchestras were secondary to the voices. Rossini put all his humour into this opera La Italiana en Argel. It’s a script full of irony and absurdity that merge into a story that, from an Italian point of view, is even patriotic. In the end, it is a kind of hymn to Italy.” This sixth edition of Opera (e)Studio allows for a small review of what has been achieved so far. Were the expectations that accompanied this initiative fulfilled? “Totally. When the current Island Councillor for Culture and I sat together to reflect on this project, we evaluated the programme that had been offered until then and tried to improve it. After this research we came to the conclusion that it would be a great success if about 10 to 15 per cent of
the singers could be recruited from our own academy. We never believed that we would be able to supply 65 per cent of the ensemble from our own sources, as we do today, and these artists have a continuous career ahead of them. The professional success of the singers of previous Opera (e)Studio projects can be measured by the production El Viaje a Reims (The Journey to Reims), which impressively illustrates the development of these artists. It’s a Rossini opera that was taken up again by the Pesaro Opera Festival conducted by Claudio Abbado. It is one of the most performed operas in Pesaro and is full of

At the beginning of October, on arrival at their smallholding in Fasnia, a young couple got out of their vehicle, leaving their 20-day-old baby in a car seat momentarily. Tragically, the car window was open and the family’s Malinois Belgian

The community of Fasnia proclaimed a day of mourning and set the flags to half mast. "We are very sad and concerned about this news", explained the mayor of the municipality, Damián Pérez Viera. An official investigation has led to it being declared a “tragic accident”. Sadly, there will probably never be an answer to the question of what led a previously calm dog to attack. The Malinois breed is highly intelligent, very willing to learn and work, and is often trained as service and protection dogs. Regularly used by police forces, they are skilled at tracking and detecting items such as fires, explosives, corpses or traces of blood. In the rescue services they are trained to search for buried victims and avalanche casualties. Ultimately, they are dogs which need a task and responsibility. The breed’s nature is described as diverse, from shy to aggressive, but they are known for their reliability. Nevertheless, caution is always needed with any dog when it comes to babies, in particular, as they may not be recognised as having a standing yet when it comes to pack mentality. Though children and dogs can make a great team, with some canines supervising little ones better than a nanny, there should always be an adult around n with small children.

New road projects Avenida Archipiélago Canario, Avenida Francisco Afonso and Calle Luis Rodríguez Figueroa in Puerto de La Cruz are to be given a new asphalt surface. With a deadline of November 1, local mayor Lope Afonso has invited tenders for the projects, which he wants to split into three independent contracts. The estimate for the works is €1.1 million and a maximum repair time of 56 days. “Now that we have put the difficult financial times behind us, which were also caused by the heavy debt burden of previous mandates, we can take a deep breath and invest again. This means that we will ensure that Puerto de La Cruz rejoins the top tourist and economic fields of n the Canary Islands”, explained the mayor.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW By Xena Fox Elvis Presley fans will be delighted to know that one of the world’s top tribute artists will be bringing his Las Vegas show to Los Cristianos on November 2. Elvis Presley influenced a generation throughout his career in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and also provided the inspiration for much of today’s contemporary music. From hits including Jailhouse Rock, Suspicious Minds, and Return to Sender, to lesser known numbers such as Blue Moon and Mystery Train, Elvis recorded more than 700 songs across the genres of rock, pop, R&B, country, blues, gospel, and folk. He is still regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century and his music is as popular as ever. Greg Miller has devoted much of his life to impersonating Elvis, and with great success. As well as starring in the Las Vegas show for 14 years, he has travelled the world bringing ‘The king of rock and roll’ to life for endless fans. However, it is not a simple case of paying homage to a great performer: His is a very personal, and unique, tribute. Many will know the story of an unknown teenager who Elvis befriended during his later years. Chatting regularly over the phone, Elvis gave his young protégée tips on per-

Eternally Elvis forming and life in general, and in return is said to have found solace in his friendship with the youngster. Greg Miller is that very teenager. Currently in Sydney, Australia, completing an epic 25-concert tour before heading to Tenerife, he was kind enough to speak to us during a break from his heavy schedule. The first thing we wanted to know was just how that famous relationship came about. Greg explained: “I grew up in Navy towns across the US. As a youngster I lived in San Diego where I used to camp out to get Elvis Presley tickets. Chatting in line in the early morning hours I made friends with some folks who, like me, couldn't sleep, and much later found out they knew Elvis from when the mom of the family had worked at Paramount Studios. They asked me to join them in the front row, which began a series of shows where we were all in the front row together. Elvis saw me with them and wanted to get to know me as he said I reminded him of him!” Thus started the historic phone calls which would continue until two days before Elvis passed away, in August 1977. Elvis gave his young friend plenty of good advice, including “to count to 10 before acting when I was angry, unless I was in danger. He also told me to vocalise every day to
be a good singer. And he said 'don't marry in haste!'”, this last being disclosed with a little chuckle on Greg’s part. Expecting your friends and family to believe that you were having regular conversations with one of the hottest stars of the time might not have been easy, but Greg needn’t have worried as Elvis also took time out to speak to his best buddy as well as his sister and parents. That

when it was time to move on. “I was so proud to go straight into the Vegas showroom so fast, and for so long. It started as a great show, but the power of it diminished greatly, I left at the right time. New owners were cheapening it down and going with recorded backing, etc. Watching that was tough”. Leaving the Vegas show may have been the end of an era but certainly wasn’t the end

After the concert the touring will continue, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love this life, he says, “Travelling is exciting and I owe it all to the man, Elvis. I have a couple of other dates in mainland Spain in November, then it’s back home for the holidays. At present I’m looking at doing a theatre in the Madrid area early in 2019, and
we are already in talks for more shows in Australia and Asia for next year.” With his strong and expressive voice, not to mention an uncanny resemblance to the King himself when he’s singing, there’s no wonder that Greg is so in demand. Illegal construction and letting At the beginning of October, during an inspection for illegal building activity and renting, officers from the special Guardia Civil unit, Seprona, which is responsible for environmental protection, filed a complaint against a 33-yearold man and a 41-year-old woman from Garafía. The two are accused of having built a 40 square metre wooden house with a covered outdoor kitchen and open-air bathroom without permission. Since the house lies in the area of Cueva de Agua located in a rural landscape which is a protected area, permission would not have been granted for its construction. The two developers have thus violated Law 4/2017 of July 13 which protects special natural landscapes. In addition, the two are accused of renting out the cottage to tourists, also without permission. n

One of the most magical legends of the island of La Gomera, the apparition of the Virgen de Guadalupe about five centuries ago, was brought to life on the first Sunday in October at the Playa de la Cueva in Puntallana. It was the crew of a Spanish ship that was passing La Gomera on its Atlantic crossing to America that first discovered the statue. A watchman saw a strange light shining from the island at night. He called the crew and the captain gave instructions to stop the ship and transfer some sailors ashore to follow the mysterious light. They found that it came from a cave near the coast, where they also discovered a figure of the Virgin Mary with a child in her arms. Filled with awe, they fell to their knees and worshipped her. Although they tried to take the figure with them on the boat, they were not able to move it. So they went into the town of San Sebastian and announced what they had experienced. The news spread quickly and people flocked to Puntallana to worship the little statue and make her an improvised, simple home.
Hundreds of Gomeros witnessed the staging of this tradition on the beach of San Sebastián, and when everyone sang the hymn to the Virgen de Guadalupe together, it was a moment that produced goose bumps. Unforgettable also was the discovery of the golden star in the sand and the dance that seemed to come out of the water. "This was a visual and moving result of months of work. And although there were a lot of people involved, we would like to emphasise the

San Bartolomé de Tirajana is the largest tourist borough in Gran Canaria. As such, the aim is to offer a good quality of life not only to its visitors but also to its residents. This also means that everyone should live together in a civilised manner, with mutual respect. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The local council does not want to accept this any longer and is taking action. In the last six months it has issued 340 fines totalling around €91,000.

doing this to fill the coffers with money. It would be ideal if we did not have to resort to such measures, because that would mean that all residents and holidaymakers respect each other and behave according to the rules of civil coexistence. But as long as this is not the case, we must resort to such drastic fines. This means a consider-
able administrative burden that we could do without." Most of the fines were issued because of the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the street, binge drinking and noise. Illegal beach massages, often offered by Asian women, are also among the top activities. Such activities are not permitted, especially as they
don’t meet any hygienic standards. A total of 88 fines have therefore been imposed on the beaches of Playa del Inglés, Las Melenaras and Maspalomas. The ambulant sale of fake bags, glasses, costume jewellery, watches or even food and drinks in public places or on beach promenades, such as the popular Paseo de La Charca, is also prohibited. For this reason, 68 illegal traders were also fined. Another annoying issue is the intransigent dog owners who do not clear away the mess left by their four-legged friends or do not keep potentially dangerous dogs under the prescribed conditions. That means: permission and registration, insurance, and the compulsory use of a leash and muzzle. Another issue is the illegal trading of animals. A total of 65 offences
have been reported in this area and they are punished with penalties of between €150 and €3,005. Further sanctions were imposed because local residents disposed of garbage and garden waste outside the containers and in large quantities on public roads, for parking motor homes on roads, for disturbing the peace, doing palm readings on the street or because the public road was misused with offers to buy, rent or for other advertising purposes. The law enforcement officers issued fines an incredible 16 times because people were doing their 'big and small business' in public squares and streets, especially in the immediate vicinity of the cultural centre in Maspalomas, in the Avenida Alejandro de Castillo and the n Paseo Costa Canaria.

up, the reptiles are released on steep rock walls that are difficult for humans to access, but which provide sufficient shelter for the lizards. New populations have been established on the Roque Chico de Salmor, in Laderas del Julán and in El Sabinar de la Dehesa. With their pronounced gripping toes, steep
walls are no problem for this native lizard. The giant lizard is an omnivore that feeds on plants, insects and sometimes carrion. The animals grow up to 75 centimetres long and weigh about half a kilo. Animals released from the centre are given a chip so that they n can be traced.

The British Consul for Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, Charmaine Arbouin, was recently welcomed by representatives of the local council at Mazo in La Palma, a town which she was especially interested in visiting during her stay on the island. The mayor of Mazo, José María Pestana, as maximum representative of the council, along with Councillor for Social Services, Julián Delgado, welcomed the diplomatic representative, taking advantage of this meeting to report on the borough’s current situation. In the words of Pestana “this type of meeting that can strengthen and lay the groundwork for a greater institutional link, is always necessary between all administrations”. During the visit, council representatives accompanied the British consul to the town’s cemetery to see the tomb of John Lee, the 22-year-old British soldier whose body appeared on the coast of the borough in 1943, a victim of the battles n fought in the Atlantic during World War II.
In September, 105 specimens of Gallotia simonyi were born at the breeding station for the Lagarto Gigante, the indigenous giant lizard of El Hierro. At this centre the endangered native lizard species is bred. The 16 female animals kept there had each laid six to 15 eggs. Over the course of the month 105 eggs hatched. This was a real success that follows on from the last record of 107 baby lizard hatchings. Héctor Hernández, Island Councillor for the Environment explained "This has proved that we always need to allow the females to rest. This new record shows how successful our breeding programme is, with which we want to save our native lizard species." After rearing, the animals are released into their natural habitat and a new count of the free-living specimens is worked on.

The lizards of El Hierro have lived there since ancient times. Up to the 70s they were even considered extinct, until a small population of this reptile was discovered on the Roques Salmor. Gran Canaria Island Council has donated €50,000 to the non-profit organisation Cruz Roja (the Red Cross) to help the victims of tropical storm Alberto in the areas of Pinar del Río, La Habana, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Cienfuegos, Camagüey and Ciego Ávila in Cuba. There is currently an urgent need for bed sheets for hospitals and medical centres. A total of 10,000 sheets are to be handed over to 28 Cuban
institutions in cooperation with the Cuban Ministry for Health. Alberto was raging at the end of May this year with storms and heavy rainfall. More than 6,000 people had to be evacuated and 115 communities were isolated. Almost 10,000 homes have been destroyed, and roads and fields damaged. Many people had not yet recovered from Hurricane Irma, which swept over Cuba at the end of 2017.
The Spanish Red Cross coordinates aid to Cuban provinces
With this aid package, the Red Cross in Gran Canaria is covering around a quarter of current needs. The Spanish Red Cross has long maintained an intensive relationship with the Cuban Red Cross and the Red Crescent. Cooperation has taken place,
for example, in connection with hurricanes Irma (2017), Sandy (2012), Iker and Gustav (2008) and Noel (2007). During the recent Alberto storm, almost 4,800 Cuban Red Cross volunteers participated in rescue operations in n nine provinces.

The hotel group GF-Hoteles recently announced in a press release that disposable plastic bottles will be banned from the chain's premises. By 2020, the plastic bottles used by guests and staff will be replaced by aluminium bottles. In addition, plastic kitchen utensils are to be replaced by those made of plant material before the end of this year and the conversion of hotel lighting to LED will be accelerated. The chain wants to reduce its carbon dioxide footprint by around ten per cent and above all, make a contribution to sustainable tourism. With this initiative, the hotel chain is joining the United Nations campaign 'Yo soy Viajero Responsable' (I am a responsible traveller). Loro Parque in Puerto de La Cruz is on the same wavelength. The abolition of disposable plastic bottles was also announced there. Plastic consumption is to be reduced by at least 80 per cent. Instead, degradable and compostable

Brown the fish on the grill on both sides and finish cooking for a few minutes in the oven, together with the cooked sweet potato peel. Property purchase contracts
Final sales terms are set out in the purchase contract
By Inés Vera Goya Abogados This type of contract is called a deposit contract, which is a commitment or compliance guarantee. This contract is as important as the deed of sale because it is where all the conditions of the purchase are going to be fixed: the identification of the buyer and the seller, the state of the property, the encumbrances or occupation that the property has, etc.
It’s a contract designed to ensure that the parties will formalise the sale before a notary in the near future, but the importance of this document cannot be underestimated because the conditions that are written in it will be the only ones that can be demanded at the time of final purchase. I reiterate this idea because in the vast majority of cases these contracts are made with models downloaded from the Internet and without having a lawyer, who is the only qualified pro-
fessional to advise the person signing on the consequences of what he is signing, especially the only one able to warn the person signing if aspects of the contract are missing that may be essential for the client and then will not be claimable from the other party. In most cases these contracts are made because, although there is an agreement between the seller and the buyer, the buyer needs some time to arrange a mortgage loan with the bank, and therefore leaves
money as a deposit collateral. In this sense, the law says that it will be the parties who decide how long they are given to go to the notary to formalise the deed of sale and how much money is put up as collateral. And if they so wish, the deposit can be left in the hands of a third party, be it the notary, the lawyer or the real estate agency in case there is a breach on the part of the seller to ensure that the buyer can recover the money almost immediately.
To understand how the deposit guarantee works, let's take an example: the parties agree today that within exactly 60 days they will sign the deed of sale and, as a guarantee of this promise, the buyer gives the seller €10,000. If the date is reached, the buyer does not go to the appointment or is not ready to buy, he will lose the €10,000. If it’s the seller who does not sell, he will have to return the money he received plus an equal amount of compensation, i.e. he will
be obliged to pay €20,000. In short, the signing of a purchase contract involves risking a significant amount of money, as well as possibly compromising the future purchase and sale, therefore, I can only advise you to take this step having been well informed by an independent lawyer. Animal charities’ round up Acción del Sol We have more than 200 dogs at the refuge patiently waiting for a new home. Please do come and visit us to see if one of them is the one for you. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, heartworm- and flea-free, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife. How you can help We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs travel by flight to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. In addition, we are desperately looking for people who are travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. K9 Today’s wonder dog is Hans! Hans has unfortunately been at the refuge for nearly four years now, and it was estimated on his arrival that he was around three years old. Although he is a large dog, he is a gentle
giant and a very low-energy and cuddly dog. Hans has not yet found a loving home mainly because he is very shy. No one has given him the chance to come out of his shell and feel comfortable enough to fall in love with him. However, all of the volunteers and staff who know him well cannot even begin to understand how someone could not fall in love with this beauty! Also, Hans does not cope well with the feeding schedule at the refuge and it is difficult for him to put on
Calendar launch K9 have announced the launch of our 2019 calendar, paying homage to the lovely animals adopted from K9 throughout the years. In order to pick which beautiful animals would be featured, we asked our supporters to send in their favourite pictures of their ex-K9 pets. We selected a judge to objectively choose 12 lovely animals to be featured in the 12 months of the year. Bulldog Gym massage therapist chosen European Boxing champion Anthony ‘Can You Dig It’ Yigit, received the news late in September that he has been entered into the World Boxing Super Series to fight Ivan Baranchyk in New Orleans. The winner of the World Title will receive US$10 million and for Anthony, at just 26 years old, this would be a life changing amount of money. Anthony said "If I win the World Title I plan to return to live in Tenerife permanently, I just love the wonderful energy around the island and I miss my true friends I made here". Anthony has been training in Moldova, Las Palmas, Las Vegas, Russia, Malaga, Sweden and Tenerife since last September, in preparation for this fight, but of all these places Tenerife remains his favourite. Anthony trained at the Bulldog Gym in Las Chafiras over three years ago and fell in love with
the island during his training time there. On a recent trip back to the Island he was reunited with his old friend, Bulldog Gym’s massage therapist and healer, Elaine Whillock. He surprised Elaine with the incredible news that she had been chosen as massage therapist for Team Digit throughout The World Boxing Super Series. Up to 700 elderly people from all parts of Gran Canaria will take part in various sporting activities as part of the Pasos por la Vida initiative on October 20.
The highlight of the event is a race in the Juan Pablo II City Park in Las Palmas. Last year, the event was well received by senior citizens and
their families, and this time, too, demand is expected to be brisk. "Some of the starters have never taken part in a race before in their lives. It shows

The 2018/19 academic year at the Universidad Europea de Canarias was opened this year by Felipe Reyes, captain of the Real Madrid basketball club. There are more and more career prospects in this field”, Reyes advised the students. Lugo almost won the game against the run of play late on but thankfully the chance was wasted. The closing minutes saw something of a rally by CD Tenerife but they failed to create any clear-cut chances. The game finished as it started with a 0-0 draw. The point actually lifted the blanquiazules out of the relegation area, it was the only plus on an afternoon to forget. Next up for the blanquazules is a difficult trip to Real Zaragoza on October 21 at 7pm before facing Alcorcon on October 27 with a 7.30pm kick off. n

A majestic sight when so many fishing boats off the coast try their luck
Around 50 boats and 200 anglers took part in the latest deep sea fishing tournament in El Castillo, Fuerteventura, during the second weekend of October. The sports fishing competition saw the winner receive €3,800 in the form of cash and vouchers, including hotel, petrol, shopping and restaurant vouchers, travel or gift baskets. Prizes worth a total of €7,000 were awarded across the categories. The winning title went to the crew of the boat Mavacy from Lanzarote. Places two and three went to Jonil and Lidya, both local heroes from Fuerteventura. Not only the big anglers had their fun, but also the little ones could try the sport for themselves. On one of the days, about two dozen boys and girls were allowed to sail along the coast of La Caleta de Fuste on board the Albakora and learn how to cast a fishing rod, attach bait to it, haul it in when something bit, and how to release the catch again. An exciting experience that the little anglers will never forget. n

Well, there never seems to be a dull moment at CD Tenerife. Even when the action may be considered to be fairly lacklustre on the pitch there is always something going on off the pitch. With one managerial change already this season it now seems more than likely that Sporting Director Alfonso Serrano will leave the club in the not too distant future. A raft of unconvincing signings have sealed his fate and the fans and media will be pleased to see him go. Whether he stays on until the January window (where it is rumoured that he already has sealed the signing of an Argentinina striker), or not remains to be seen. Changes are needed quickly at CD Tenerife from the top to the bottom and President Miguel Concepción received his largest ever stadium protest during the recent draw with CD Lugo. The hankies were out and the chants are not repeatable in a family newspaper but for now he is not budging. However, in a post match interview he told waiting reporters that “if a group of serious investors were interested in taking control of the club I would listen to them” but it is widely thought that he will stay and ‘reinvent’ himself at the club with widespread changes. It is too early in my opinion to talk of a crisis but come mid-October the league does not lie and hovering just above relegation is not good enough for a club
