Tenerife tops transparency table

Transparency is the key word in 21st century politics, covering a number of issues such as co-determination by citizens, traceable budget management, and greater insight into the work of government bodies. The public wanting to know how their government works and preferring to have a say in decisions is a growing trend. How well governments are adapting to new guidelines is assessed each year and an independently established report known as the Canary Islands Transparency Index (ITCanarias) published. Dramatic housing shortages Researchers who have undertaken a study for the DISA Foundation which examines the Canary Islands’ economy and focuses in particular on the housing market, have issued an urgent warning to politicians. Results suggest that by 2031 there will be a shortage of around 140,000 apartments in the Canary Islands, both at the affordable housing and luxury levels. “The Canary Islands are currently experiencing less construction than ever before. If the situation does not change, the gap between demand and supply could become so wide that it cannot be bridged”, warns José Carlos Francisco, President of Corporación 5, who conducted the study on behalf of DISA. “It is imperative that we boost the construction of housing on the Islands in order to stop the rising purchase

and rental prices of real estate”, he added. It is also believed that the current dispute over holiday

rentals is so fierce only because the demand for apartments already exceeds supply.

Specifically, it opposes the municipal ordinance that was passed in Las Palmas at the end of October, but has not yet entered into force. It stipulates that owners who want to let their apartments to holidaymakers can only do so with apartments that are located on the lower floors and have a separate entrance. The association sees this as a curtailment of owners' rights and calls for protest. On Tenerife in the capital Santa Cruz, a likewise up-todate regulation has been filed. It divides the city into two halves, the first half including the historic old town, the centre of El Toscal and the Barrio de Los Hoteles. There, tourist rentals are permitted on the lower floors of buildings or on floors below which there are no apartments, but rather, for example, business premises or on floors with their own access. The results of last year’s evaluation were announced at the beginning of November, and it’s easy to see that politicians have indeed started to take the issue seriously. For instance, while the average score in 2016 for all governmental organisations, out of a maximum of ten points, was 3.85, it had risen to 6.93 just one year later. Leader among the Canary Islands is Tenerife with 8.43 points. Yet, in 2016, the largest Canary Island, with 5.61 points, ranked below the average of the other Canary Islands. Thanks to the introduction of a monitoring committee based on a transparency catalogue, self-assessments of the individual departments, the introduction of a transparency portal as well as the ‘Participa Tenerife’ platform for citizen participation and the Tenerife TV channel, the island has made the leap to the top. Interestingly, the smallest island, El Hierro, is ranked directly behind the largest, after a huge jump from 0.76 to 8.2 points in just one year. Having almost doubled, to 7.58 points, transparency on Fuerteventura has also increased significantly, ranking the island third in the index. In addition, La Gomera climbed from 2.59 points in 2016 to 6.87 last year. However, Gran Canaria and La Palma are below average with 6.5 and 6.41 points respectively, and have some catching up to do, whilst Lanzarote is far behind everywhere else with just 4.52 points. The president of the island, Pedro San Gines, has to set things in motion rather rapidly in order to catch up. n

Shooting begins for Rambo V As this edition hit the streets, shooting began for the fifth part of the Rambo saga, Rambo V: Last Blood. Now that the scenes which were taken in Bulgaria have been completed, filming now continues in Tenerife. The house of the Mexican villain Hugo Martínez, played by the Spanish actor Sergio Peris-Mencheta, will be located in Santa Úrsula, in the district of El Calvario. Rambo, alias Sylvester Stallone will free the half-sister of investigative journalist Carmen Delgado, played by Paz Vega, from the clutches of the Mexican drug mafia. In another leading role, Óscar Jaenada appears as a pimp. Besides Santa Úrsula, other sequences of the movie will be shot in Puerto de La Cruz and especially in the areas of Cepsa, Ifara, Somosierra, Taco and Barrio Nuevo in Santa Cruz. Rambo will be fighting the mafia in Tenerife until December 4. The script was written by Stallone in collaboration with Matt Cirulnick and the movie is being directed by Adrian Grunberg. n

AENA GOES IT ALONE

"You need to come down from heaven to talk to the ordinary mortals", Jorge Marichal, president of the hotel and holiday association Ashotel, sarcastically criticised the airport operator AENA recently. The cause of the displeasure: The hotel and tourism companies and even the Island Council found out about AENA's plans to build a new terminal and parking area in the Tenerife South Airport via Twitter. The planned investment will amount to €62.4 million, while a total investment of €140 million is included in a financial plan which covers 2017 to 2021, but this was announced before the Island Council knew anything about the exact plans. Therefore, the Council convened an emergency meeting in the plenary hall to discuss the plans with island president Carlos Alonso, politicians from the fields of tourism, finance and mobility, business and hotel associations, representatives

SCARE ON THE FAST FERRY

Armas ferry collides with a boat In early November, 129 passengers and 21 crew members of the fast ferry Alborán belonging to the shipping company Naviera Armas experienced a fright. The ferry had just left Las Palmas about an hour earlier and was on its way to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Close to the area known as Bañadores near Arucas, in the north of Gran Canaria, the ferry rammed another boat, the Trames Uno, which was only about 25 metres long, at 52 kilometres per hour. The ferry captain just did not see the boat that was used for diving and was also heading for Santa Cruz. It was carrying two containers, with a pressure chamber and various other diving materials. Luckily, none of the ferry passengers were injured, only two suffered from mild anxiety, and none of the vehicles on board the ferry were damaged by the collision. The divers' boat was secured at sea and guarded by a tugboat crew until the morning when the Trames Uno was towed back into the harbour. n

Against plastic pollution The European Commission, the United Nations Environmental Programme and other international partners have launched the Coalition of Aquariums. This initiative has been joined by Loro Parque in Tenerife and Poema del Mar in Gran Canaria. The aim is to combat the contamination of the Earth with plastic. Aquariums all over the world will therefore organise permanent activities in their facilities and modify their own policies in order to eliminate all disposable plastic items. Quite apart from that, with over 300 glossy photos, it’s a particularly beautiful publication that would adorn any bookshelf. The authors Sergio Pou, David Afonso, Abel López, Sara Cabrera, Pedro Miguel Carmona and Juan Francisco Delgado, in collaboration with more than 40 researchers, technicians and local councils, as well as many of the island’s older population who were interviewed, have put together a collection of beautiful vantage points to be found in the 31 boroughs of Tenerife. Mirador means an official vantage point, and these tend to be well marked and designated as such and are often located in or near nature reserves. Miraderos, on the other hand, are more hidden corners which have a magnificent panoramic view and in some cases are known only to locals. In the past the shepherds or travelling merchants often stopped at these places to enjoy the view. Many of them had already fallen into oblivion and were only rediscovered through conversations with the older Canarian farmers and agricultural workers. The book, written in Spanish, English and German, explains where to find these different vantage points and their peculiarities. Fake grenade causes panic

Early in November, the central Atocha railway station in Madrid was closed and evacuated and several trains were stopped before they were due in. The reason was the suspicion that an assassin might be in the station. A man wearing a belt buckle in the shape of a hand grenade had triggered an alert of the security forces and caused a stir. This is not the first time that fashionable accessories that are supposed to look ‘cool’ have been perceived as a threat and alarmed the police. In May of this year, an exciting incident occurred in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, for the Local Police and a man from Arucas. As he walked through the Las Arenas shopping centre, the handle of what appeared to be a pistol could be seen in the back pocket of his jeans. The officers followed the man inconspicuously to his vehicle and then to his house in Arucas. Only there, away from the public, to his great horror they challenged him. As it quickly turned out, it was just a mobile phone cover which the man carried in his back trouser pocket and which at first sight looked deceptively similar to a weapon. The police called for such accessories to be used with common sense and to be aware of their possible perception by third parties. It would be even better to ask oneself whether one needs something like this at all, as sometimes it can backfire! n

The most important midnight bells of the year sound on New Year's Eve and this year for the Canaries they will be broadcast live from Los Realejos on Spanish television. Mayor Manuel Domínguez and the Director of the national TV station Radio Televisión Española in the Canary Islands, Domíngo Álvarez, have recently signed a contract to this effect. "The enthusiasm with which Los Realejos applied and the assurance of full support convinced us," explained Álvarez. The bells from the parish church of Iglesia Apóstol Santiago will be heard across the archipelago and, thanks to the broadcast, will be heard throughout Spain and internationally via the Internet. In February the local council made

its application with a comprehensive dossier and is now very pleased with the result. The application focused on the historical legacy in the old town and the church, which was the first Christian church in Tenerife. In 1994, Los Realejos hosted the bell ringing at the end of the year. "We are working at full speed on the festive programme for New Year's Eve. Of course there will be a big stage with different musical performances on the Plaza Viera y Clavijo" Carolina Toste, the councillor responsible for the ceremonies, was pleased to announce. A huge open-air party at the end of the year will spread the great atmosphere of Los Realejos all over the country, and the world. n

Women hater threatened neighbours A man was recently arrested in Fuerteventura who threatened his neighbours with knives, persecuted them, observed them and damaged their property. The man’s activities focused on a specific group of women in the immediate vicinity of his apartment in the Durazno district of Antigua. The police began their investigation after several complaints had been received. The man had recently intensified his activities, to such an extent that the women concerned felt threatened and

were severely restricted in their daily lives. He watched the women, knew exactly where they lived and worked. He lurked hidden behind cars or bushes and jumped out when they were alone. He threatened them with a knife, kicked their house or car doors and even threw stones at their windows. No clear motive for the man’s behaviour or hostility could be found, even towards the officers who ultimately arrested him, except a deep hatred for several women in his

At the age of 23, the musician was already a professor in song composition at the Gnessin Music School, where he himself began his training for piano, flute and dance, which

he completed with a distinction on both instruments in 1993. He then studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Professor Elisso Wirssaladse until he graduated with a piano diploma. Initially he worked as an assistant professor, but since 2009

he has been a full professor with his own piano class at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in his home city. Today Jacob Katsnelson is a sought-after teacher who is repeatedly invited to give

national and international master classes. His artistic career is also remarkable. He has won prizes at numerous renowned national and international piano competitions, in which he participated both as a soloist and as

a chamber musician with his Academic Trio. Thanks to his extensive concert activities in Russia as a soloist and soughtafter chamber musician, he has also played at concert halls throughout Europe, the USA, Latin America, as well as in the Near and Far East. He is also a regular guest at national and international festivals and accompanies Russian and European song and opera singers with great enthusiasm. The prickly autumn fruit

The last weekend of this month at the farmers’ market in La Matanza is dedicated to chestnuts. The cultivation of the huge trees with the prickly fruit was probably brought to Tenerife with the post-conquest Spanish and Portuguese settlers, possibly as a replacement for the laurisilva chopped down for shipping needs. The giants rise up to 30 metres high into the sky, growing mainly at the medium altitudes of La Orotava, Santa Úrsula, La Victoria and La Matanza. That’s why they are not to be missed at the farmers’ market, where everything that grows in the fields and on the trees of the local area is sold. On this special weekend, the chestnut will be the centre of attention and their deployment will be demonstrated on various stands. The farmer’s market opens as always from 10am to 3pm. In Canarian cuisine, the chestnut, of which there are many different varieties available here, is very popular. When the arrival of the new wine is celebrated in the autumn, the stands of the ‘chestnut men’ with their roasting ovens which give off an enticing and tempting scent, are usually not far away. n

To make matters worse, the casualty, who was luckily in a dry and protected place, was a heavy man weighing 130 kilograms. Because recovery would be particularly complicated under these circumstances and with dusk falling, the firemen decided to spend the night at the scene with the casualty and hope for better weather conditions on Sunday morning that would allow recovery from the air. In the morning, six GREIM officers, four firefighters each from Icod de los Vinos and San Miguel de Abona, five firefighters from the Santiago del Teide Volunteer Fire Brigade and ten Red Cross workers arrived at the scene of the accident. Among them was a nurse with first aid training who also made her way there. At noon, after two other unsuccessful attempts to carry out an air rescue, this possibility was finally discarded for safety

reasons due to the strong gusting wind. A strenuous evacuation operation began for the rescue team, down the ravine. The injured person was secured on a stretcher and carried towards the coast. The team crossed watercourses, climbed over steep slopes and with the greatest physical effort they eventually made it to Playa de Los

Carrizales where two boats, the fire brigade and the Red Cross were awaiting them. The injured man and his rescuers were taken by boat to Los Gigantes port where an ambulance was waiting to take the casualty to hospital. It was 8pm and after about 30 hours, before the rescue mission was finally brought to a happy conclusion. n

La Gomera’s island president Casimiro Curbelo has announced that three meuros are to be invested in the maintenance of the terraces on the Island’s slopes. First and foremost, retaining walls are to be repaired or secured. A total of 25 slopes in six communities are to be reformed as part of the campaign. About 38 per cent of the area of this small Island consists of such steep slopes, which are laid out in the form of terraces. The preservation of the terraces, some of which are located in nature reserves, has several advantages. Above all, it is important to prevent soil erosion during heavy rainfall. The terraced areas which were designed to provide cultivation areas, are equally beautiful when overgrown with wild plants, but are also a tourist attraction. They are part and parcel of the image and landscape of the island, which is popular with many holidaymakers because of its rural idyllic nature. The decision hasn’t come out of the blue however, it’s in preparation for March of next year when the island will be hosting the IV World congress for territories with terraced and sloping areas. n

Officers from the Guardia Civil special unit SEPRONA, which is responsible for nature conservation, search throughout Spain for crimes in the area of international trade in protected wild animals, smuggling and poaching. In August of this year, they noticed an online advertisement offering the complete three and a half metre-long skin of an American crocodile for €4,500. The advert was

traced to a 60-year-old man from Santa Úrsula in Tenerife. The crocodile species Crocodylus acutus is protected by the International Trade Agreement for Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna, CITES. The American crocodile is listed as an endangered species and therefore trading the animals or even the smallest parts of them is strictly prohibited. The owner of the crocodile skin could not

provide the officers with any valid documents regarding the

origin and the legal possession of the crocodile, and the skin was therefore confiscated and the gentleman reported to the police. On an international level, the European Union is targeting illegal game smuggling to protect endangered species. Article 334 of the Penal Code provides for prison sentences of between six months and two years and a ban on the profession of keeping of animals is imposed, as is an explicit ban on fishing or hunting for two to four years. In the case of threatened animal species that are illegally smuggled or traded, the highest penalties are usually applied. n Even the head was still attached

A life full of passion for parrots By Sabine Virgin The International Parrot Congress is organised every four years by the Loro Parque Foundation in Puerto de La Cruz, and this year's gathering illustrated perfectly how it is gaining in importance. "This ninth congress was a particular success, not only because it broke all previous records with around 850 congress participants from 47 nations, but also because it ensured an intensive exchange through the presence of so many experts from different continents and countries. In this way, it was possible to establish connections that serve species conservation", summarised Rafael Zamora PadrĂłn, Scientific Director of the Loro Parque Foundation. Not only was it a great achievement, but never before has the congress been sold out so early. By August, the registration lists had to be closed because the maximum capacity had already been reached. The congress is a place for the exchange of knowledge and experience not only among professionals but also with amateurs whose great passion is parrots. Among other notable guests this year, a group of students from Giessen who had recently visited Loro Parque with a delegation from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine used the congress as a further supplement to their education. "At the same time as its other advantages, the congress is important from a tourism point of view because of the numerous participants from all parts of the world, as well as the fact that some of them came with their families

interesting specialist areas. We cover very many different topics: Nutrition, parrot medicine, research and conservation projects, to name but a few. One interesting topic was the research work that has been carried out on behalf of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen at the Loro Parque Embassy since 2014. Have there been any study results yet? Princess Dr. Auguste of Bavaria is collaborating on the research project with Russian behavioural scientist Dr. Anastasia Krasheninninikova. They investigate the cognitive abilities and intelligence of parrots, in particular working with grey parrots and macaws. They have found, for example, that parrots that are shown different

and visited the most diverse places in Tenerife and even Gran Canaria", added Zamora. This year, a particularly strong delegation came from India. Are there so many parrots in India? In fact, there is an incredibly large number of breeders and parrot lovers in India. There are some indigenous species in the country, but they are not allowed to be kept privately by Indian law. Therefore, there are gigantic breeding facilities with aviaries, in which hundreds of parrots of different species grow up, which are then

handed over into private hands. The breeders are increasingly interested in how they can feed their animals well and keep them healthy. But among the Indian delegation were also veterinarians, and landscape architects for zoos, who gained inspiration for lifelike replicas for the Mumbai Zoo, which is to be modernised and for which Loro Parque serves as a model. There is an incredible amount of passion for parrots in India, which surprised us when we started working together four to five years ago. At that time, our visits were mainly about education and training.

At the congress there were some interesting speakers and for the first time also a workshop afterwards, were there not? Yes, that's right, we introduced the workshop with specific topics due to the great demand. We put together interesting lecturers for each congress, who share exciting new information with the experts. Rosemary Low, whose lifelong commitment we have honoured this year with the Gorilla Prize, contributes time and again to the success of the congress with her lectures. Something else astonishing has also emerged: The parrots Auguste works with have overcome their own eating instincts and have proven that they can evaluate the profitability of a process. When they were offered a delicacy, but knew that there was something better coming if they just waited a little while longer, they deliberately decided to forego the first treat in order to get the better one. So far we have only known about this behaviour in primates. In addition, Auguste of Bavaria is researching special abilities of different species. There are cockatoos which use stickers as aids and parrots which do not only learn words, but can also assign them. For example, by saying "Good morning" in the morning and "Good evening" in the evening.

the species has been reduced from 'critically endangered' to 'endangered' according to the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (UICN), we believe? Yes, that’s correct. The project began in 2006, when biologist Erica Pacífico, on behalf of the Brazilian government, gave us two pairs of the Lear's Macaw, hoping that we could succeed in breeding this parrot species which is in great danger of extinction. The parrots live in the so-called Caatinga, which in the language of the Tupí who live there means 'white forest'. It is an extremely dry and hot region where it does not rain for up to five years. The trees lose all their leaves and the outer ends of the branches turn white. However, the Lear's Macaws do not nest on trees, but in rock caves. That's why we had a replica of such a rock face built into the aviary at Loro Parque. The animals recognised this as a safe breeding place and after only six months there were the first clutches of eggs. In the meantime over 30 specimens have been born, six of which have now been taken back to Brazil. We pay very close attention to a good gene pool when breeding our offspring.

What other interesting projects were presented at the congress? There were, of course, many interesting speakers. One example is scientist Luis OrtizCatedral, Professor of Environmental Sciences and Ecology at the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Massey in Auckland, New Zealand. He succeeded in preserving the Norfolk parakeets, which were on the verge of extinction. His knowledge about the protection of species, especially on islands, will now flow into projects for the protection of lizards and snakes on the Galapagos Islands. Shortly before the congress, six specimens of the Lear's Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari) were transferred to Brazil so they could be released into the wild. It is one of the Foundation's major projects and, thanks to its commitment, the threat to

But this exciting project now goes even further, doesn't it? The six specimens were specially selected, examined for all possible diseases and finally taken to a place for release in the north of the country. There, a so-called soft release, that is to say, a kind of gentle reintroduction, is practised. There are only two Lear's Macaws left in the area, which we believe are same-sex and therefore cannot reproduce. Our Lear's Macaws, three pairs, have now been taken to a huge free flight enclosure, where the animals learn under protected conditions how to feed

themselves in the wild, how to get to the particularly tasty and nutritious marrow of the kernel of a particular date species or which predators they have to be on guard against. They have learned a lot in the meantime and have developed strong flight muscles. The wild specimens have already begun to make contact with 'our' macaws. They approach and communicate with them. Soon the door will be opened in a second phase so that the animals can fly outside at their own request. This project is a good example of a combination of 'in situ' and 'ex situ' measures that ultimately ensured the conservation of the species, isn’t it? Exactly, we started breeding the Lear's Macaw in captiv-

ity in Brazil and in Tenerife. So it was an 'ex situ' measure. At the same time, the local people, often primitive tribes who occasionally even ate the eggs, were educated about the threat to the birds and were made aware of the importance of preserving the species. Parallel to this, funds were created to compensate for damage caused by parrots, for example during maize cultivation. This in turn has led to greater acceptance

in situ, in the natural habitat of the birds. Since its foundation in 1994, the Loro Parque Foundation has supported various projects worldwide with around $18 million. Now $1 million is ready to be distributed again. How many applicants have there been and how will the allocation be decided?

We have received a total of over 60 enquiries. We primarily support projects that are concerned with parrots or the oceans. Then we pay attention to how well thought out the projects are and who is behind them. Only then will we decide via a committee of eleven members, including the President of the Foundation,

Christoph Kiessling, President of the Loro Parque Group, Wolfgang Kiessling, the Director of the Foundation, Dr. Javier Almunia, myself and invited members. Some projects will receive follow-up support and others will be added. How we will distribute the million dollars will be decided before the end of the year. n

At the beginning of November, a student who regularly uses the bus service in Tenerife recorded a video with her mobile phone of another passenger who was masturbating in his seat. Neither the presence of the other passengers nor the young woman sitting on the row of

seats next to him deterred the man, who was of foreign appearance. The author preferred to remain anonymous but the video was published on the Sol del Sur Tenerife website, though later removed due to its graphic content. However, a photo of the offender could still be seen. n

Every year from the end of October to around mid-November, the Environmental Protection Agency in Tenerife activates its campaign to rescue shearwater birds. The Pardella Cenicienta, as it’s called in Spain, is not currently threatened with extinction, but it’s still important to ensure that as many of the chicks as possible reach their natural habitat, the ocean. Though they nest on land, shearwaters spend most of their time living at sea. As soon as they are big enough, the recently hatched young will leave their nests and fly towards the sea, orienting themselves with the help of the moon. However, despite strict laws to reduce light pollution at night, many of the chicks become disorientated due to billboards and other bright lights, especially in tourist areas and on nights with a new moon. They become lost and usually fall to the ground, ending up in gardens, public parks and other areas. Last year a total of 1,617 specimens were rescued by volunteers. More than 450 were collected in each of the Adeje and Arona boroughs alone. In cooperation with the island’s government-run wildlife sanctuary, the animals are nursed, fed, given medical care if necessary, and later released on the coast and encouraged in the direction of the Atlantic Ocean. Anyone who finds such a bird should immediately contact the La Tahonilla wildlife sanctuary (tel: 922 445 777), the Island Council Citizens’ Office on 901 501 901, or call the 112 emergency number. Do not give the birds water, food or medicine, please leave it to the experts and volunteers who can handle them. n

Canarian cine success A Canarian film called Isleños, una raíz de América (Islanders, a root of America), received the title of Best feature-length documentary at the recent World Film Fair held in New York. For the event, chosen films were not only screened in the 'Big Apple', but also in cinemas around the globe during the last week of October. Over 452 films from 87 countries took part in the competition. Director Eduardo Cubillo learned about the award for his documentary shortly before the start of the fair. He was pleased to say "We are very proud, not only

of the team from La Gaveta Producciones, who made the film together with Spanish TV station Televisión Española, but also of the fact that Canarians in the USA and the history of the Canary Islands became the focus of attention." The film is about Canarian emigrants who went to Louisiana at the end of the 18th century to defend the part of the country occupied by Spaniards against British attacks. They settled in the unique landscape there, yet maintained their Canarian roots and traditions over the centuries. However, despite the theme of the film and its numerous other awards in Russia, India and Latin America, the film was not granted any honours at similar, smaller scale festivals in Spain or the Canary Islands. Beautiful and creepy Under the motto Happy Streets, the borough of Adeje offers plenty of good entertainment at this time of year. On Halloween it was less about ‘happy things’ than about ‘scary things’, or maybe it was both! This was at least the impression gained by those who dared to attend the Halloween party at the Baobab Activate Sports Club. On the last day of October, they had a really sizzling, scary party, and they had a

delightfully devilish time! Whether it was the classic Dracula who exuded his vampire-like charisma or the creepy robber bride, a crazy clown, a bloody ghost, the walking dead, a bloodthirsty bride in suspenders or the one-armed ghoul who attacked the two-armed one with his sword, there was plenty to see, laugh at and enjoy. Of course, the many cocktails with creepy names also contributed to the scary atmos-

phere. The party promised to be a long and very entertaining night and this promise was fulfilled in spades. Scary friends of all ages and nationalities celebrated a ‘terribly beautiful’ party until dawn. Dangerous currents on the Taganana coast where a 20-year-old Swiss man died recently are frequent

The Canary Islands registered 45 drownings in the first ten months of the year, including one person who disappeared on

the Taganana coast at the end of October and whose lifeless body was recovered in early November.

Compared with the previous year when 74 people were killed, this represents a decrease of around 34

per cent. The most dramatic months were January and October, when eight people drowned in the Islands. This was followed by March and July with six deaths each, August and September with five drownings each and February, April, May and June with two fatal accidents each. Most of the deaths (18) were in Tenerife, followed by Gran Canaria (15), Fuerteventura (6), Lanzarote (6) and La Gomera and El Hierro with one death each. La Palma is the only island which has not recorded any fatal accidents in the water to date this year. According to estimations by the platform Canarias 1,500 km

de Costa, a further 143 people experienced an incident in the water and fortunately survived. Only recently in the first week of November, a 35-yearold woman who was pulled out of the water at the Playa de Los Patos in La Orotava by other bathers, was luckily revived. She was flown to the University Hospital in La Laguna in a critical condition. The platform sees the decline as being mainly due to the large-scale campaigns that have been carried out in the Canary Islands for the last four years. It’s the only independent community in Spain where preventive spots are broadcast on television or posted on social

networks during the summer months. This campaign, which refers to the most frequent bathing accidents, is also shown in hotels and translated into six other languages. It’s not only in the Canary Islands where this precautionary measure is appreciated. The spots currently run in around 50 hotels in five countries. As part of an agreement with the borough of Bahía de Banderas in Mexico and soon the University of Atlántida in Argentina, the Canary Islands' campaign is finding its way to international audiences in other countries. It’s the first initiative of its kind in Spain and within the European Union. n

Campaign for local fish consumption At the beginning of November, the Tenerife Island Council launched a campaign which will last for one month, to promote the consumption of legally caught Canarian fish. Among other aspects, it will use publicity on the back of buses, as well as radio and cinema commercials to get the message across. The Agriculture, Farming and Fisheries Department, headed by Jesús Morales, is promoting the brand that was founded two years ago and that identifies Canarian fish in supermarkets, restaurants and hotels. Morales said "It proves that the fish were caught in traditional, legal ways by local fishermen in Canarian waters, and that the minimum sizes were observed and endangered species were spared. There are currently ten fishing cooperatives in Tenerife, consisting of around 500 professional fishermen and 340 boats. Fishing accounts for 0.3 per cent of the gross domestic product of the island. Approximately nine million kilograms of fish are caught annually. On the other hand, there is fish poaching, which threatens legal fishing, marine ecosystems and food safety. Illegally caught fish cannot be traced in case of doubt and do not carry any alimentary safety guarantees. In the Canary Islands, coastal and oceanic pelagic fish such as tuna and sardines or demersal fish, such as bream and perch, as well as shrimps and squid are caught. n

For the first time ever in its history, awards for the best sea salt were granted at this year’s Agrocanarias trade fair. There used to be 60 salt flats in the Canary Islands, the salt from which was known for its good quality. However, today only five of them are still active, though it is hoped that the industry can be revived. In a blind tasting during the fair at the Castillo de San José in Arrecife, Lanzarote, a jury of

15 experts judged 15 different salts. Twelve of them came from Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and La Palma, and the remaining three from Andalusia and Murcia. Eight belong to the Flor de Sal category and seven are classified as Virgin Sea Salt. The Flor de Sal are salt crusts made up of crystallised salt which is formed on the surface of the water by the action of the salt and wind alone. The salt crust, also called salt bloom,

Help for food banks

The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, together with City Councillor for Social Affairs, Óscar García, recently announced financial support for the borough’s non-profit food banks. A total of 44 non-profit food distribution entities are involved in the ongoing and increasing project of ensuring that residents across the five districts of the capital have enough to eat, under the umbrella services of Banco de Alimentos de Tenerife and the Red Cross. Incredibly, between eight and ten thousand families in the city benefit from the free distribution of basic foodstuffs. In order to facilitate the organisation of the valuable help, Bermúdez has assured a complete or partial assumption of the running costs of the institutions, such as rent, electricity and water, from 2019 onwards. In addition, the associations raised other challenges, such as the difficulty of recruiting new volunteers and having to utilise old vehicles for transporting goods. In the latter case, the mayor also promised to mediate with the Island Council in order to find a satisfactory solution. n

This clause prevents the interest you have to pay from falling below a minimum rate, even though the reference rates are very low. The fundamental consequence of this is that you pay extra interest for a clause that you didn’t know existed in your mortgage. You must remember that in order for the ‘floor clause’ to be eliminated from your mortgage and the overpaid amounts returned, before

going to court, it’s necessary to present a claim to the bank. This can be done using a standard form provided by the bank itself, or through a formal out-of-court injunction prepared by a professional. In the event of such a claim, or even once the claim has been filed in court, one of the possibilities is that the bank may offer to come to an agreement with you. But what should you do about that offer? Without a doubt, the best option is to consult a professional. You shouldn’t fail to seek advice simply because the bank tells you it’s unnecessary. In terms of the bank's offer, on the one hand, it’s not advisable to accept an agreement

in which they simply remove the floor clause but do not return any cash, since it’s quite unlikely that if you have a floor clause, it has not been put into effect. On the other hand, if as part of the deal you are offered an amount of money, it’s advisable to always ask for the mortgage’s amortisation table, and go to a professional to get it checked out. Some banks choose to pay in full what was overcharged by the floor clause, but don’t pay the interest that has been accrued in full. In such cases, it’s advisable to calculate the difference between what they offer and what they should pay you, and once you know the difference to weigh up whether

We are extremely committed to this as we feel it is vital to educate children to improve the welfare of our four-legged friends in Tenerife. The III Travesia a Nado Muralles del Infierno swimming competition was recently held for the third time in Santiago del Teide and once again,

despite the beautiful weather, it lived up to its name '- Walls of Hell'. Anyone who jumped into the water at Punta de Teno

to swim to Los Gigantes was competing in a 12 kilometre long, exhausting competition. Under the massive steep walls of the Los Gigantes cliffs,

up to 600 metres high, the swimmers look like dots in the ocean fighting against the currents, waves and their own exhaustion. Those who made it should be proud of themselves. Because this competition is so special, it attracts participants from other islands, from the Spanish Peninsula and even from abroad. This year the Briton James Secoy won first place on the podium, having mastered the mammoth course with a time of 3:55:00 hours. Behind him followed Antonio Santana (3:56:02 hours) and Rubén Rodríguez (4:03:10 hours). The best time for a local hero was for Jonay García who reached the Playa de los Guíos after 5:23:43 hours and the local female swimmer Aruma Sosa dominated this sporting challenge with a time of 5:42:50 hours.

Points winners for the Canarian Cup on the 6.5 km route

If this distance was too much to conquer, swimmers could opt to cover the shorter six and a half kilometre distance from Masca Bay. This discipline won points for the Canarian Cup in open-sea swimming competition (Copa Canarias de Aguas Abiertas). In the shorter race, Erika Rivero came in first for the women (1:27:43 hours), ahead of Ainhoa Santana (1:27:57 hours) and Fátima Moriana (1:49:38 hours). In the men's category, the first three places were taken by José Víctor García (1:18:29 hours), Nicolás De Smaele (1:18:29 hours) and Michael

Ledda (1:18:59 hours). For the local heroes their times weren’t good enough to reach the podium, but they still scored valuable points towards the Canarian Cup. One last discipline included a short distance of one and a half kilometres. Javier Pena (17:52 minutes) won, followed by Leopold García (18:18 minutes) and David Cáceres (18:34 minutes). In the women's category, Jacqueline Piñana (22:32 minutes) crossed the finish line first, followed by Maitane Aldasoro (22:34 minutes) and Sara Ballesteros (22:50 minutes). n

TRANSATLANTIC SAILING RALLY

The renowned ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) has been held for 33 years. It starts in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and runs across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Due to the constantly increasing demand, three variants were offered for the first time this year, some of which go via Cape Verde and the newly acquired Caribbean island of San Vicente. A total of 300 sailing boats and 1,500 par-

ticipants, including around 50 children, from over 30 countries will be at the start. Due to the introduction of three regatta courses, there will also be three starting shots. The first one already took place on November 11 for the ARC Plus from the Gran Canaria capital via Mindelo in the Cape Verde Islands to Santa Lucía. A total of 73 sailing boats and their crews are on this route. On November 15, a small group of ARC San

Vicente-bound ships will follow, heading for the Caribbean island of San Vicente from the same starting point. The main rally, which is routed from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Santa Lucía, will be sailed by 200 boats and their crews. The starting shot will be fired on November 25 at 12.30pm at the main marina. Just the sight of the multi-sized ships setting sail for the Caribbean is a sublime moment. n

Tanausú was one of the twelve rulers of the indigenous people of La Palma, before the Spanish conquest in the 15th century.

Legend has it that his visage guards the entrance to the Caldera de Taburiente nature reserve and protects it.
