CARING CARD
Santa Cruz social project Before the end of the year, the people who are currently supported by the Santa Cruz City Council Social Welfare Office will receive a card that will give them more independence and dignity. With this card, the Tarjeta Básica, they can for the first time shop independently in the supermarket chain Dinosol. Per family, the card, which is indistinguishable from other customer cards in appearance, will cost around €100 to €140 per month, and depending on the size of the family, may even be used to activate more cards. An island of happy children
Unicef honours Tenerife Tenerife’s Island President Carlos Alonso recently received the Ciudad Amiga de la Infancia seal of approval from Unicef. It’s awarded to local governments that promote the rights of children and young people. The aim of this international initiative is to motivate boroughs, provinces, independent communities and countries to promote holistic development and to create a framework in which all children have equal opportunities. “This award is a great tribute to the work of our government and society, a close cooperation of many agencies, whose common goal is a greater protection for the youngest and a future perspective for all. Education, youth and childhood also play an important role in the long-term planning for 2030. This award is also a responsibility and I promise that we will continue to work to guarantee our children a good present and a better future,” Alonso declared. The Ciudades Amigas de la Infancia programme has been led by Unicef’s Spanish Committee since

2001. It collaborates with the Ministry for Health, Consumers and Social Affairs and the Spanish Association of Cities and Provinces. It aims to improve the living conditions of girls, boys and young people through local support programmes and thus guarantee holis-
tic social development with a focus on the rights of this collective. The award was presented at Oviedo in Asturias, northern Spain. Fuertventura was on the stage alongside Tenerife, and they too were proud to receive this award. “This moment is the fruit of more than
two years of work, during which we have identified the needs and shortcomings of our six communities and worked to improve them,” said Marcial Morales, President of Fuerteventura. Continued on page two

Canary Island children are better off The evaluation of the study of the situation of children and families conducted by the two Canarian universities, headed by the lecturer in Evolutionary Psychology and Education, María José Rodrigo, reveals that the number of children and adolescents in extreme risk has declined in recent years from 2,957 underage girls and boys in 2014 to 2,552 last year. The number of children considered as such is distributed among the islands and varies according to the population: Tenerife (1,081), Gran Canaria (963), Fuerteventura (227), La Palma (165), Lanzarote (87), La Gomera (17) and, in the last place, El Hierro with only twelve minors. To classify minors in a risk situation, the personal and family atmosphere as well as the environment are taken into account. Personal and social development is observed, with

a view to intervening early enough in an emergency so that the child can remain with his or her family. “The decrease we have achieved is due to work in the 78 communities. There, we are at the forefront of local efforts to ensure the good development of all children and their equal opportunities,” said Carmen Morales, Canary Islands Director of Child and Family Protection. Last year, the Canary Islands Government provided more than five million euros for this area. Social workers cooperate with the families concerned to discuss the children’s various needs and possible support needed.
No child without a gift
Nevertheless, there is still much to do - there are another 150,000 children at risk of poverty in the Islands. For disadvantaged families, Christmas can be more a reason for concern than for joy. Parents who cannot afford to buy Christmas presents are more likely to fear Epiphany. Therefore there are campaigns in nearly all the Canarian boroughs, to collect toys for children from families in need, because everyone should have reason to smile at Christmas. In Arona, the Social Welfare Office has launched a new concept this year to give a gift to all children between the ages of two and twelve from socially disadvantaged families, under the motto: “Alone we can do little, but together
we can achieve a lot”. Anyone who wants to contribute to a child receiving a Christmas present can buy a gift voucher for €30 in one of the participating shops. The parents, who know their children and their needs and wishes best, can then redeem this voucher for a gift in the relevant shops. Alternatively, a donation of €30 can be made to the account ES87 2100 1522 1902 0030 4095 La Caixa, marked ‘tarjeta de regalo’. Participating shops in Arona are: Juguetería la Casita Toy, Juguetería Trebol (previosuly Toysur), Juguetería Arvelo, Erilau, Deportes Venezuela, Cachi Sport, Deportes Salud, Sport Center, TDC Sport Las Galletas and Cabo Blanco as n well as Intersport.

Of course, there are limits, it’s not possible to buy alcohol and tobacco with the card for example. However, basic foodstuffs and hygiene articles are available. “We would like to thank the supermarket chain Dinosol, which has a wide coverage in our city and is expanding, because they were the only ones who agreed to participate in the project. The people who benefit from the card can now buy fresh ingredients and hygienic products in a normal way, which preserves their privacy” said Deputy Mayor Zaida González. The councillor for social affairs, Óscar García added “This system will come into force before the end of the year. It’s currently foreseen that it will be valid for two years with the option of renewal. I trust that the families who are entitled to this card will handle it responsibly. This system has come to stay.” So far, the city’s social welfare office has supported spending of €1.4 million in the form of special allowances. The new system gives cardholders more self-determination and a normalisation of their shopping behaviour. They do not have to disclose their needs to a shop assistant. The user of the card must identify him- or herself as the legal owner of the card when making a purchase. Only in the case of people with disabilities can a third person exceptionally be appointed to make the purchase on behalf of the beneficiary. They can then spend 51 to 71 per cent of the monthly allowance. In these cases, the purchase will be delivered n directly to the beneficiary’s home.

Mourning the loss of an orca trainer
Why and how did Amy die? The disappearance of the young Orca trainer Amy Louise Gerard is still a mystery. On the last Thursday of November she celebrated the birthday of a friend at the well known Molly Malone bar in Puerto de La Cruz together with her colleagues from Loro Parque. Shortly after midnight Amy and her companion, who’d had a row that night, left the bar separately. That was the last time that Amy was seen alive. A body later discovered is presumed to be the missing woman. Was it an accident, suicide or was the young woman a victim of relationship violence? In the end, the Judiciary Police unit for specialised and violent delinquency (UDEV) took over the case. Although they came to the conclusion that it was probably not an act of violence,
the final result of the investigation is not yet known. Additionally, the autopsy did not give a cause of death nor a clear identification of the body that was found, so at the time of going to print, friends and family are waiting for the result of a DNA test.
Looking for Amy On Saturday December 1, the National Police in Puerto de La Cruz received a report of a missing person. On the Sunday and Monday, an extensive air and sea search was carried out for the young woman, who would soon have celebrated her 29th birthday. On the morning of December 4 at 11.30am, the body of a young woman was found about 150 metres off the coast of Puerto de La Cruz, and brought ashore. It’s very

likely that this is the missing young woman. Amy's mother Julie, her sister Chloe and her fiancé Mike arrived from England as soon as they were told she was missing. They knew immediately that something must have happened because it was unusual not to hear from
Amy for days. "She loved her work so much" the family confirmed. She herself said about her work "The most important thing for a trainer is that he loves his animals" and she did that with all her heart. Amy was born in Grimsby in Lincolnshire whose port, alongside Immingham, is one of the largest British trading
ports. The sea was her constant companion from birth. She studied animal behaviour at the University of Lincoln and marine mammals were her speciality. After graduating, she worked with dolphins and sea lions in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and France. She started working as a dolphin trainer at Loro Parque in
2016. "You can only protect what you know and the dolphinariums are helping us to learn more about marine mammals" she explained in a video on her Facebook page. She was promoted to Orca trainer in May of this year. She was very proud of this work and really enjoyed working with n the majestic animals.

Christmas mood at Las Canteras The giant nativity scene on Las Palmas’ famous city beach is an attraction that’s eagerly awaited by fans every year, who arrive from far and wide to visit the impressive works of art. This year created by eight artists from Australia, Belgium, France, Canada, Latvia and Russia, the scene is constructed from sand and was finished on November 30, after only nine days of toil. Local and national media were present to celebrate the big moment of the inauguration, and photos placed on social networks by LPA Visit spread around the globe in a flash, reaching over 55,000 users in just one weekend. There was also a great rush to see it live - on the first weekend alone over 15,000 people visited the sculptures. The Nativity scene can be visited on Playa de Las Canteras until January 7, Sunday to Friday from 9am to 10pm and Saturdays until 11pm. Exceptions are December 24 and 31 and January 5, when it is only open until 8pm. All n donations are passed on to community projects.

Island ring road to be completed The project for the completion of the island ring from north to south is to be tackled before the end of the year. The connection between El Tanque and Santiago del Teide and the section between Los Realejos and Buen Paso are still missing. Despite all the critics, Island President Carlos Alonso, in consultation with Canary Island Vice-President Pablo Rodríguez and representatives of the other political parties, has voted for rapid implementation and does not want any extensions to the existing project. Alonso explained, "A modification would mean that we would have to obtain more
environmental assessments and the whole process would start all over again, resulting in a delay of at least four years. However, our roads are already so heavily used that the public needs an answer as quickly as possible. We cannot wait any longer." The project is to be put out to tender before the end of the year, construction will start next year and be completed by 2024. "Then anyone who lives in Tacoronte can get to Adeje faster via the TF-5 northern route than via Santa Cruz," the forecast says. The tunnel will have two lanes in each direction. "The project is estimated at over 320 meuros.

Quite apart from the fact that it will significantly improve the traffic situation in Tenerife, jobs will be created in road construction. It’s therefore important for us to start construction next year and not to
allow any further delays," Rodríguez confirmed. In addition to the major island ring road project, the construction of a VAO bus lane on the TF-5 and work on the motorway near Las n Chafiras are priorities.

Loro Parque donated €10,000 to the victims of the tsunami disaster in Indonesia at the end of the year. With this money the nonprofit organisation is able to improve the living conditions of children and their families. They were already living in dire poverty, which has now been exacerbated by the natural disaster. The Loro Parque donation will mainly be invested in water, medicine and food. It’s an essential contribution that will secure their most important needs and bring back some laughter to many children in Indonesia. Since its opening in 1971, Loro Parque has helped with various social emergencies and regularly cooperates with associations that work to meet the needs of children, elderly and disabled people both here and abroad. n

Collective campaign for children in Gambia
Cisneros school solidarity
The management of the Colegio Cisneros Alter in La Cuesta, La Laguna, attaches great importance to the social values they teach their students, which is why they organise a collection every year for a good cause. As a parallel activity, the students sell hot chocolate and pastries donated by their parents. This year, the proceeds will go to Correcaminos Solidarios Tenerife and will be presented to the President, Lorenzo García Pérez, on December 21 during the closing act of this year’s Christmas Carol Festival in Valle Tabares. He explained in advance to the teachers what the money would be used for. It is destined for a school project in the village of Fass Chamen in Gambia. In September 2015, the non-profit organisation opened a school in this village at which 72 children were registered. Today, three years later, there are five classes (three pre-school classes and two primary classes) in which 190 pupils are taught by six teachers. The distribution between boys and girls is roughly equal. At the school, children from seven different ethnic groups meet to learn together, a mixture which symbolises the cultural diversity of the country. In the future, the school would like to cover the entire primary school education up to the sixth grade. In order to achieve this, the school must be expanded in a next phase to include a third building module to accommodate the fourth and fifth grades. “We want to start construction in 2019 and be ready by the beginning of the school year in September 2020,” explained Lorenzo García Pérez. The income collected by the pupils from the school in La Laguna will be put directly to work in the construction of the school. More information about the project can be found on the website www.correcaminosolidarios.org. n
Stop the advertising brochures! With the beginning of the high season, all the bad things that are connected with the new marketing opportunites start again. Sadly, these include pickpockets who come to the Canaries in the form of organised gangs from the Balearic Islands and the Spanish Peninsula to make their rounds here over the next few months until the Mediterranean season begins again at Easter. Another source of irritation are the numerous brochures and advertising leaflets for excursions that are placed on display on walls in parks, streets or public squares and blown away by the wind. The Association of Hotels and Holiday Resorts in the Province of Tenerife (Ashotel) is calling on the Canary Island Government to put an end to the distribution of brochures in this way, saying it not only damages the image of tourist areas, but also, assuming that
the services are not properly registered, discriminates against the legal and tax-paying providers of services who sell them legally from their offices. "We believe that this request reaches far beyond the local interests of the holiday resort boroughs. We also find these activities undertaken all over the islands. Therefore, we believe that there must be a uniform Canarian regulation. For six years we have been calling for action against these ‘street excursion advertisers’, so far in vain," complains Jorge Marichal, President of Ashotel. It’s not that easy for councils of the main holiday boroughs of Arona and Adeje in Tenerife to fight against this abuse alone. Even if the Local Police impose fines and open a file, it’s usually useless. Most companies that work in this way have their headquarters outside the archi-

pelago and no office within the Canaries. Letters with warnings and fine notices never arrive or are ignored. The collection of fines outside the Spanish borders is costly and is therefore
usually given up on. The association offered its full support to the political authorities in drafting a bill to regulate or finally ban these activities in public n spaces and streets.

Jesus Christ Superstar
The story is based on the New Testament and deals with what happens to Jesus Christ after he arrives in Jerusalem. It’s told from the perspective of the person who eventually betrays him, Judas Iscariot, and features the most important moments of Jesus' last days on Earth, including the expelling of the money changers from the temple, the Last Supper and Judas' betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, all the way up to the trial before Pontius Pilate, and the subsequent crucifixion of Jesus. For almost half a century Jesus Christ Superstar has been a very attractive show for audiences around the world. This is not only due to the thrilling way it deals with a timeless and highly emotional theme, which contains within

Scenes from this entertaining and emotional musical
Visitors to the Pirámide de Arona in Playa de Las Américas will have an exceptional opportunity to see an excellent version of this famous musical in English in January. Today, the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is older than the historical figure Jesus of Nazareth was when he died. But it is still loved by millions of people around the world and the legion of fans is constantly growing. The performance of this rock opera in
Tenerife was preceded by a successful international tour under director Stanislav Moša (Czech Republic) which visited Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Austria and Switzerland. The musical Jesus Christ Superstar is the work of two young men, the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (today's king of the musicals, who was only 23 years old at the time) and libretto author Tim Rice who was three years older.
At the time of its first West End staging in 1971, no-one expected it to have a longer shelf life than that of the ideals of the hippy movement. However, the London production paid off its initial costs of ₤120,000 within just a couple of weeks and it went on to become one of the most performed musicals in the history of the genre. Today it is Webber's most frequently produced show, along with the Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Evita.

Seville Declaration
Blue economy for Santa Cruz
Good waste separation and, even better, waste avoidance are the first steps towards a closed waste cycle
At the Santa Cruz Council meeting held at the end of November, it was decided that Tenerife's capital should join the Seville Declaration, a Spanish response to the European goal of shaping the economic cycle in cities for better use of resources via recycling. The concept of a ‘circular economy’ was born at the end of the 20th century with the
aim of creating a system that is beneficial, rather than detrimental, to the environment and human health. In an ideal world, the existing linear practice, based on production, use and disposal, is converted into a recycling sequence in which primary materials are reused as many times as possible. To do so, however, means tackling consumers’ and manufac-
turers’ behaviour and finding new approaches at all levels of society. The Seville Declaration was adopted in March 2017 and provides for new waste and environmental management in cities and boroughs, covering a total of 54 concrete measures which can contribute to the implementation of the sustainability concept.
In Tenerife's capital, the approach is being worked on successively in order to comply with European Union requirements. Last year, for example, containers for separating waste were set up at the major carnival and May festivities in order to reduce the mountains of waste that accrue. Following EU directives, the Seville Declaration stated that: "Until the goal of a circular economic cycle is achieved, it is important to examine the entire life cycle of our products, both in terms of production and consumption, in order to protect resources and initiate necessary changes. In the long run, such efficient use will actually bring net savings to European businesses, public institutions and private households. At the same time, annual emissions will be reduced and thus less greenhouse gases will be emitted". Though there may be a long way to go before the objective is reached, it’s good to hear that Santa Cruz is already takn ing the first steps.
La Orotava Nativity walk
From one scene to another
For the eleventh year so far, La Orotava is celebrating a very special nativity scene walk at Christmas time, in which numerous private households also take part. The nativity scene season opened on December 1 with the inauguration of the classic display in the Town Hall Square. Afterwards, further artful scenes follow and the most beautiful pieces can often be found at house entrances, on patios or in churches. They must be finished by shortly before Christmas at the latest. Never before have so many participated and this year some 35 nativity scenes will be ready for viewing by December 22, and will lure visitors to admire them right up to January 5. Some are classic, others rather modern or with Canarian elements, there are absolutely no limits to the imagination. If you would like to find out where all the scenes are and when they are open for viewing, you can download a multilingual brochure from www.laorotava.es and let it lead you around the town and surrounding villages. Most of the nativity scenes are located in the historic old town, although some can also be found in the districts of La Florida, la Villa de n Arriba, Cañeño, Las Candias and La Perdoma.

Paraglider crash month
As beautiful as gliding over Tenerife is, safety should always be a priority
Never make a jump without first checking with colleagues about special site features
Extreme sports such as apnea diving, paragliding or climbing are popular in Tenerife as, thanks to the mild climate, most sports are possible all year round, but sometimes safety comes second, sadly. The month of November is particularly well known as being
a dangerous month for paragliders, and this year it certainly lived up to its reputation. Accidents left one person dead and four injured in Tenerife and a further serious injury in Lanzarote. In addition, on the first weekend of December, the series continued with a
41-year-old paraglider crashing in La Caleta de Interian near Garachico and injuring himself moderately. The first accident in November occurred on November 10, when a 47-year-old man in the Parque de Las Nieves area of Adeje got caught in
some trees. On the 18th, a paraglider landed in the closed swimming pool of Los Silos and injured his leg. Two days later, a 40-year-old athlete crashed in an inaccessible valley of the Famara massif on Lanzarote. On November 23, another flyer suffered a mod-
erate injury during an involuntary landing on Avenida Las Gaviotas in Adeje, and three days later a 48-year-old German suffered a crash landing near Taucho. The saddest accident occurred on November 28 when a foreign paraglider crashed to death in Barranco de Las Torres. According to the local paraglider associations, most of the victims are holidaymakers. "No matter how much flying experience you have, you should never jump on holiday without talking to locals. Many underestimate the special wind conditions and dangers of the
Barrancos", local experts say. They also criticise the fact that many paragliding flights are booked in advance by holidaymakers. If the conditions at the time of their stay are not optimal, they often jump anyway, because the providers want to avoid reimbursing fees. However, this can be life-threatening. Therefore, the call to all providers and paragliders is for caution and prudence. Rugged and complicated terrain, as is the case on the Canary Islands, can produce unusual wind currents, which can cren ate unseen dangers.

Valerij Petasch Tenerife concerts
Valerij Petasch is a gifted pianist, composer and illustrator
Every year in winter the socalled swallows fly in from various countries in Europe to spend the season on the Canary Islands in a mild climate. One of the most famous winter events that classical music lovers look forward to seeing is a concert by the piano virtuoso, composer and painter Valerij Petasch, who is an honorary member of the International Polonia-Moscow-Chicago Society. The gifted artist comes from Moscow and his parents were a German pianist and musicologist and a Russian teacher. Very early in his life at the age of four years old he composed his first small pieces of music, which were written down and documented by his father. Later, after attending the Gnesnin Academy of Music, he studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, where he graduated with the highest distinction and diploma. Then a lucky coincidence came to his aid. German music experts heard a solo concert by Petasch in Moscow and spontaneously invited him to the Federal Republic of Germany, where

he has now been living for over 20 years. From there he has been on concert tours all over the world. Since 2000, Petasch, who has now become a German citizen, has been a master class lecturer in piano at the University of Ulm. Valerij Petasch is particularly associated with the music of romanticism and impressionism. For "outstanding Chopin interpretation", as the certificate states, Valerij Petasch was awarded honorary membership of the worldwide Polonia Chopin Society. He has already released several CDs, all illustrated with his own drawings, his third great passion. Among others, a live recording of the Schubertiade Luxembourg 2006 was released in the same year and another of a piano concerto for four hands, which he recorded with his pupil Uli Schinkmann in 2010. He has also published a compilation of his own compositions on the CD Eine Reise in die Vergangenheit. So there are good reasons to look forward to the concerts planned for Tenerife between December n and February.
At the southern tip of Gran Canaria on the beach at Mogán, 17 people were arrested at the beginning of December as alleged drug dealers. They were caught in the act of trying to bring 2,875 kilograms of cocaine ashore. They had taken the cargo by sea from a mother ship and then brought it ashore in two rubber dinghies. There, three vans were waiting to be loaded with the white powder, which was tied into tight bundles. As part of the police operation, 17 people were arrested, more than 2.8 tons of cocaine, twelve vehicles, two boats and €5,700 in cash were confiscated. An M-16 assault rifle, a semi-automatic pistol and a compressed air pistol were also seized. n

One million dollars for conservation projects
Loro Parque’s commitment to nature list of countries where projects are supported is much longer. This year, initiatives will also be financed in Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Madeira, New Zealand and Polynesia. Some of these projects are trans-national and therefore also benefit ecosystems and endangered species from neighbouring countries. From an ecological point of view, terrestrial species and ecosys-

Other important land-based species and ecosystem conservation projects include the protection of lions in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, the Soldier's Macaw and Yellow-cheeked Amazon Macaw in Ecuador, and the Blue-Throated Macaw in Bolivia - all of which will receive over $60,000 in 2019.
Another important area to which the Loro Parque Foundation is committed is the conservation of marine species and ecosystems, for which grants of $200,000 are planned next year. Almost three-quarters of this will be spent on cetaceans (orcas, dolphins, humpback whales and pilot whales), which will be used for research into their welfare, monitoring and conservation of the population of orcas in the Straits of Gibraltar, and developing systems to prevent the accidental stranding of pilot whales. It is also important to highlight participation in a project on the island of Madeira to conserve the Mediterranean monk seal. This species is considered critically endangered on the UICN Red List, making it the most endangered mammal species in Europe. In addition to the projects aimed at protecting marine mammals, the Foundation will continue in 2019 with conservation projects for other species, such as sea turn tles and sharks.

At the annual meeting of the Loro Parque Foundation held recently, it was decided which projects would benefit from the investment of a million dollars during 2019. Each year, the Foundation makes a hefty sum available for nature conservation projects on the five continents. It was decided that species and ecosystems on the American continent would be supported with almost 60 per cent of the donations ($577,000). European projects will receive just over $203,000 and African projects $126,000. Asia follows with $73,000 and Australia-Oceania with $21,000. A total of 40 species conservation and research projects on five continents are being supported via 34 non-profit organisations and universities around the world. Among the countries, Colombia is the main beneficiary with almost $145,000, followed by the Philippines, Brazil and Bolivia, each of which will receive slightly more than $60,000. But the

Police officers wanted The Canary Island Government Minister for Territorial Policies, Sustainability and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto, recently welcomed the 32 new police officers and four chiefs who have joined the Policia Canaria. The 30 men and two women, plus two inspectors, one subinspector and a commissioner, will be deployed in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The candidates came from other police forces, such as the Local and National Police, as well as
from the Guardia Civil. "Precisely because these new officers come from other security services, they are already aware of the important role they play in public security," she said at their welcoming event. At the same time, she pointed out that another 57 places are currently being advertised. The force is to be gradually expanded so that it is represented on all the islands of the archipelago. This is the first time that a State secu-
rity body has applied an agreement recently adopted by Central Government and lifted the exclusion of applicants who are celiac, diabetic, sufferers of psoriasis or carriers of the HIV virus. This makes this corps the first of the Spanish police forces to oppose the stigmatisation of the chronically ill and give them equal opportunities. For this reason the application deadline, which was originally limited to December 19, was extended

Mr Manley meets mayors and the British public and human relations that the borough and the Islands have with the British people will not be affected by political decisions, although it’s obvious that a mechanism of this kind will have economic effects that are difficult to anticipate". For his part, Simon Manley explained that "the Canary Islands have had a special relationship with the United Kingdom for a long time. “Over the centuries, many Britons, including merchants, art-

The UK Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, was in Arona on November 27 to address a public meeting on Brexit and its effects on British residents. were interested in knowing the impact it could have on tourism, the most important industry in the southern boroughs and the Canary Islands as a whole. During this meeting the Ambassador sought to allay any worries people have about changes in status, pensions, and workers' and business owners' rights here in the Canary Islands. “Register, register, register” was Manley’s repeated call to residents, not just on the ‘padrón’ in local councils, but with the National Police/foreigners office, adding that they were aware that the official numbers of Britons living in Spain didn’t reflect the reality. He told them that if they were registered as residents, they would be covered by the withdrawal treaty, as “what the withdrawal treaty does, once it is ratified by the British Parliament and the European Parliament, is to embody the guarantees set out in that treaty, in international law. There can be no firmer basis for the protection of your rights, enabling you and your families to continue to live here in the manner in which you have lived here hitherto”. The Ambassador was in the Canary Islands for four days, visiting five of the islands. He also met the head of the Canarian Government, and representatives of the Embassy’s social partners. Accompanying the mayor was the Consul for the South of Spain and the Canaries, Charmaine Arbouin, vice consul Helen Keating, and the consular staff who deal with British residents here on n a daily basis.

Mina - The Music Story
Great Italian singer Mina will soon celebrate 60 years in showbiz, so it’s the perfect time to see one of the best tribute shows around, which will be taking place in Los Cristianos on January 20. Mina - The Music Story pays homage not only to a performer who’s remained popular throughout six decades, but also to the woman who’s shaped Italian society, challenging mores from the outset and inspiring generations of fans. Such an icon of Italian culture is no mean act to follow, but singer Jenny Rospo brings Mina alive during the stage show, taking the audience on a marvellous journey through some of the greatest moments in the history of Italian music. Many hit songs such as Tintarella di luna and Parole Parole are included in the evening’s repertoire, and Rospo’s accomplished band of musicians from Italy will be accompanied by Tenerife’s wonderful Sam Pearce on saxophone. Wrapped in and around the music will be a wealth of beautifully presented anecdotes, curiosities and fascinating information about Mina’s life and career, and there are one or two surprises in store for anyone who’s seen the show before, including the appearance of a number of guest performers. Organisers this year are Casa Italy, an Italian socio-cultural association that has the objective of supporting the Italian language and culture in Spain. See Mina – The Music Story at the Infanta Leonor Auditorium on January 20, starting at 4pm. Tickets can be bought from the town’s cultural centre or online at www. arona.org. You can follow Jenny Rospo at Facebook/ JennyRospoSinger or www.jennyrospo.com. n

Make sure you have cover for all winter eventualities
Is your home ready for the cold spell? On the occasion of the Christmas period and beyond, maybe you’ve planned to travel to your country to visit family and friends. A home insurance, therefore, is essential during this time of the year, basically because you will leave your home empty and also, in winter, extreme weather conditions are capable of wreaking havoc on your home, even more, if you are far away! In view of this, you should bear in mind some things before you go away for your vacation to keep your home safe and secure. Talking about your home insurance, it is important to make sure you have the cover you need and that it remains valid whilst you are away. You should know that if you are away from home for more than a certain number of days, in the event of a loss, the claim coverage could be rejected if the home
has been vacant for a period longer than stipulated in your policy. Thus, ensuring that your home insurance provider is aware that the property will be vacant for a long period of time and checking the period in your policy, can make all the difference should the worst happen in your absence. On the other hand, there are many insurance companies that don’t cover wind perils. Liberty Seguros does, but even if yours also covers it you should talk to your insurance agent to determine if personal property, such as a swimming pool or your garden furniture, will be covered. With Liberty you can have the peace of mind that your garden furniture will be covered even if it has been damaged by adverse weather conditions. But not all insurers are alike. Other threats to your home arising during the winter season are cold snaps which
can cause pipes to burst. Liberty Seguros, for example, will compensate you for the additional water consumption due to a broken pipe and also they will pay for the repairs of the parts affected in case your pipe bursts due to the cold snaps. However, replacing the entire pipe system can be costly for you, so that it’s always better to prepare for the unexpected! If this worries you, find out which areas of your house are most susceptible to freezing pipe problems and begin taking preventative action. Another wintertime disaster could be that your roof collapses from the results of the heavy rains or blizzard, a standard home insurance policy will usually cover the damage. However, most insurance companies will review the condition of your roof to determine whether or not you were negligent as they determine
the payout. The best thing to do is to keep updated records, including photos, of the condition of your roof and any regular maintenance. By taking the necessary precautions and preparing your house for winter before you leave, you can avoid being tangled up in an insurance claim this winter season. Having your roof regularly shoveled, trimming threatening trees, finding burst water pipes, shutting off your water and cleaning your gutters are all things that can be done before
you go away to help prevent an unwanted disaster. Over 175,000 expat clients already chose Liberty as their insurance provider and this figure grows almost every day because of the excellent service and quality of cover clients get. In order to achieve this and to assist those that prefer a more personalised service and a face to face chat, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents that are dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly, expert
advice. Speaking your own language, these brokers and agents will be pleased to help you as much as possible. Liberty Seguros is considered the expat’s number one choice in Spain. To find out more visit www.libertyexpatriates.es, or simply call 91 342 25 49. n

A Christmas tail
A dog is for life By Nikki and Richard Attree It was Christmas Eve in the puppy farm—not that you’d know it. There were no decorations, no presents, no love—just the usual cruelty and squalor. The cages were crammed with dogs huddled together in the darkness. A man grabbed one of the Boxer pups, tore him away from his siblings and threw him in a cardboard box. He chucked the box in the back of a van and delivered it to the local pet shop. The shopkeeper put the frightened puppy in a display cage in the window. They’d be closing in an hour, but it was Christmas Eve and there was always the chance of a last minute sale. Kev was desperate. All afternoon he’d been looking for a ‘Puppo’. The robot puppy was this year’s ‘must have’ present and Sharon had been nagging him for weeks to get one before they sold out. He shivered and tried not to think about the tantrum their six year old daughter, Tracey, would throw when she realised she was facing a Puppo-less Christmas. The pet shop was Kev’s last chance. The sad little Boxer puppy in the window looked nothing like a Puppo, and a real animal would be a poor substitute for the canine robot, but Kev was desperate. “How much is that puppy in the window?” he asked. “Ah, yes. The one with the waggly tail.” the shopkeeper replied, smirking. Kev wasn’t amused. The shopkeeper shrugged. He glanced at his watch and
then at the puppy ..“Look, it’s Christmas and I can see you’re desperate, so you can ‘ave ‘im for ‘alf price.” “Thanks, mate. I’ll take ‘im” Kev replied, gratefully. Just across the road Ana was waiting in the vet, fighting back the tears. Next to her was Charlie, her fourteen year old Spaniel. She’d been praying they’d have another Christmas together, but he was in so much pain. It was time for Ana to say goodbye to her best friend. The vet called her name and she carried Charlie into the surgery. The nurse was so kind. She put her arm around Ana and told her she was doing the right thing. Ana held Charlie in her arms, stroking his head as the vet gave him the injection. He looked up at Ana, licked her nose for the last time, and drifted away peacefully. Christmas Day, Kev was woken early by an angry shout. He rushed downstairs to find Sharon gazing in disbelief at the chaos in the living room. The presents had been ripped open and the chewed-up contents strewn around the room. Tracey was chasing the puppy, screaming excitedly. “Get that mutt out of ‘ere now!” Sharon yelled. The Boxer pup barked manically. “Why the hell did you buy it without asking me?” Sharon demanded. “Who’s going to look after it? Take it for walks? Take it to the vet?” Kev shrugged—she had a point. Sharon stormed off to the kitchen. The puppy sneaked upstairs to Tracey’s room and hid under her bed. All this excitement had

exhausted him. He needed a snooze, but the little girl wanted more. She grabbed his tail and dragged him out. He squealed in pain and nipped her hand. Tracey ran to the kitchen and tearfully showed her mother the teeth marks. “That’s it. I’ve ‘ad enough!” Sharon screamed. “Either that dog goes, or I do.” Kev scooped up the Boxer and dumped him in the spare room And that’s where he stayed— all day and all night, alone, listening to the family eating, drinking, and arguing. Ana’s Christmas Day began with her usual walk in the park. Resorting to her normal routine, she grabbed Charlie’s lead, as she’d done every morning for the past fourteen years - and shook her head sadly, remembering she didn’t need it. The other dog walkers were sympathetic, of course, but they seemed uncomfortable with her, without Charlie. She understood why. They didn’t need reminding how quickly
a dog’s life passes and they knew that nothing could ease the pain. She got through the day watching movies, eating ice-cream, and looking at old photos of Charlie, avoiding Facebook and all the images of happy people. She had a few glasses of wine and toasted his memory. Then she went to bed and cried herself to sleep. Boxing Day, Kev was woken by a pitiful whining yelp coming from the spare room. He opened the door and tried not to puke at the smell. The puppy had done what any dog would do—relieve himself wherever he could. That did it. Kev grabbed the pup and chucked him back in the cardboard box. Then he looked up the address of the nearest animal refuge and drove straight there. It was closed when he arrived, but that suited him. He wouldn’t have to speak to anyone, justify himself, feel guilty. He left the box outside the gate, with a note. ‘No way
can we keep this dog. It pees and poos in the house and it bit my little girl.’ Later that day Ana also visited the refuge. She’d adopted Charlie from there and taking some dogs for a walk might help her get over his absence. The manager, Marion, greeted her with a cardboard box in her hands. Must be a present, Ana thought, feeling guilty for not bringing a gift with her. “Hi Ana. Happy Christmas.” Ana explained why it hadn’t been so happy for her. Marion hugged her and told her the refuge was full of dogs that had been abandoned over the holiday. “This poor little chap was dumped outside just a few hours ago.” She pointed to the cardboard box. “Look at their pathetic excuse.” She handed Ana the note. Ana read it, frowning in disbelief. She reached into the box, lifted out the puppy and held him up to her face. They gazed at each other ... and something extraordinary happened. A
spark passed between them, a connection, like love at first sight—two strangers look into each others’ eyes and know, immediately, they’re soulmates. Love and loss - two sides of the same coin. “People think dogs are like toys they can throw away when they get bored with them” Marion said, angrily. “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas!” Ana nodded. The puppy licked her nose and the sadness began to melt, like a snowman who’s past his sell-by date. “You’re right” she replied “and this one is going to spend the rest of his life with me”. CANARY ISLANDS’ FESTIVITIES
Turrón, nativity scenes and hot lingerie Admittedly, the mixture cited in the headline may sound a little strange at first, but these are all ingredients for a wonderful Christmas season in the Canary Islands. The magic of the festive season is truly celebrated by the Canarian people. Nowadays, instead of advent wreaths, Christmas trees and their lights start to twinkle during the run up, to get everyone in the mood for the celebrations to come. Christmas Eve also has a different meaning here, and traditionally the Christmas feast and giving of presents is kept within the family circle. Although the birth of Jesus is celebrated from a religious point of view, this does not mean there will be a big gift party that evening or the next morning. In fact, the main day for gifts is Epiphany. However, because of the Christmas holidays, some families have become accustomed to putting at least one present for the children under the tree on Christmas Eve to keep them occupied during their vacation. Globalisation is also making its way here with Santa Clauses and chocolate balls to buy, but typical Spanish Christmas specialities are quite different to the ones visitors are used to.
Turrón, polvorones and more There are no mince pies or Christmas cake on the Span-
ish Christmas menu, but there are nevertheless other delicious goodies to try. The magic word for those with a sweet tooth is ‘turrón’, which is produced in several different flavours, and sold in blocks.

Almond turrón, which is similar to marzipan, is quite a classic and comes in hard and soft variations. But there are also chocolate creations or coconut flavours among the wide range to seduce purchasers. Polvorones are soft pastries, made of lard, flour, sugar, milk, almonds and nuts, that seem to dissolve in fine powder in the mouth, hence the name, which is based on the Spanish word ‘polvo’ which means powder or dust. There are variations refined with cinnamon, lemon or cocoa, or as butter biscuits which are called mantecado. Other pastry specialities are made from puff pastry (hojaldre) or small

In La Orotava, some of them are even made accessible to the public in the form of a nativity scene tour, and in front of the town hall a nativity scene showing everyday Hebrew life made with life-size figures is created. The nativity scenes at the roundabout in front of the town hall in La Matanza, in the entrance area of the Island Council building in Santa Cruz, or the one in Arona also have a cult character. But of course there are lovingly decorated nativity scenes to be discovered everywhere, just have a look around. In Gran Canaria, the giant nativity scene made from sand on Playa de Las Canteras in the capital Las Palmas is an absolute must to see.

PIT makes children happy The absolute highlight of the Christmas holidays for the young and young at heart is clearly the playground for children and youngsters, called PIT for short, which will be installed at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz from December 21 to January 5. This year, as a super-PIT, it is dedicated to the galaxy and calls for the salvation of pleasure. Included will be lots of games for children of all ages in the virtual and analogue world. The programme also includes sporting activities at various levels of difficulty, from familiar ones such as football and tennis to rarer ones such as archery. In addition there will be fair rides that promise rapid and exciting jaunts. Free use of all attractions is included in the entrance fee of only €9. Information is available at www. pit-tenerife.com. The opening hours are: December 21, 3pm to 8pm, December 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30, 10am to 8pm, December 24 and 31, 10am to 3pm, December 25 and January 1, 3pm to 8pm, January 2 to 4, 10am to 8pm, and January 5, 10am to 3pm.

Sleep well on air- and water beds from Romo Those who wish to welcome the New Year in with a new mattress will appreciate the option of an air mattress from Bettenshop Romo in Las Chafiras. The company is offering an air mattress of a somewhat different kind, which is particularly back-friendly. To sleep on these mattresses is as if you are sleeping on a cloud, primarily due to the PUR air core which is available with one or three chambers. It is flexible, supple and resistant to mechanical and thermal stress. The air core can be inflated by an integrated and quiet compressor to the exact pressure that is comfortable for the sleeping person and, what's more, at the touch of a button, it even remembers the setting. For example, those who like to read in bed and prefer a firmer mattress will want to inflate it a little more. Once the light is switched off just press the
memory button on the mattress, and the pressure programmed for the sleeping position will be automatically restored. Also, the mattress can be adjusted on a day to day basis and is therefore particularly flexible. The cushions are open-pored and breathable. The mattress is available with one continuous air chamber or divided into three chambers. In this way, a different firmness can be achieved for the head, the back and hip and leg areas. It is the perfect comfort solution, especially for people with back pain, and is even recommended by doctors and therapists.

Christmas encounter | From the other side of the hills
Good Crisis Father Christmas About the Author John Reid Young is a very talented writer whose family has been connected with the Canaries for many decades and he draws on personal experience and legendary family stories to tell some marvellous tales which interest, intrigue and entertain.
By John Reid Young “Good morning to you Father Christmas!” said King Baltazar as cheerily as ever at the start of their annual meeting on the roof of the Anglican All Saints Church in Puerto de La Cruz. In fact Father Christmas nearly didn’t make it in time this year. What with the economic crisis and all that, far from having less presents to gather together he found that parents were asking him to bring many more, smaller things for their children instead of large bulky presents. Although this meant less weight for his reindeer, the percentage of parcelling had increased dramatically as parents compensated less spectacular gifts with a greater quantity of Christmas tree fillers. King Baltazar admitted that the Three Wise Kings from the Orient had found a similar pattern emerging but also noticed slightly more optimism regarding the economy at the beginning of December. Nevertheless, they were still finding time for an immense amount of generosity and he was hoping to find one or two hidden bargains at the All Saints car boot sale. “Yes, dear fellow”, said Father Christmas, after settling down his greatness on to the roof. “We still need a few miracles like that dragon tree growing out of the palm!” He was referring to the quaint image of the roots of one species finding shelter and nourishment from another, just outside the church gates. The two old gentlemen always liked to think of that as an example of how
the human race should behave towards one another, sharing and accepting ideological and religious differences wherever possible. “Talking of one culture helping another, Father Christmas, it’s just over nine years now since Vicente Ferrer finally passed away. We stopped off in India last week and met some of the thousands of families in Anantapur which his foundation has helped over the years. Now his is an example of how you in the west can help poorer countries, providing micro-credits and showing communities how to work and how to create their own wealth by their own efforts.” “I entirely agree old chap”, replied Father Christmas raising an eyebrow as he often did when he was about to say something controversial “and I’m afraid I sometimes feel like chucking it all in with some of the requests I receive for gifts, especially from so-called civilised European people. “You would never do that! You and we Three Wise Kings are far too necessary a tradition. If we were to go, as so many other Christian traditions have been allowed to dwindle out of homes, it would be the end of civilisation as we know it.” “Ah yes, but you know me when I get a bee under my bonnet. I can be quite ungenerous when I feel too much fuss is made of things created and given false values by massive promotional campaigns. For example, millions of letters have asked for Odessey and Bohemian Rhapsody CDs this Christmas. Were Take
That and Queen more important than your Vicente Ferrer who spent a lifetime helping others? Was their work more exemplary, for example, than Sylvia Earle’s who received the Princess of Asturias Concord Award this year for her work as the ‘voice of the ocean and nature’?” King Baltazar looked at his old friend with that eastern cunning look of his. “Ah, but you are just a little biased, my friend. A little bird has informed me that you yourself have a preference for The Beatles and that you listen to them on your old fashioned sledge stereo. Am I not correct?” Caught out as he often was by Baltazar, Father Christmas chuckled long and hard, admitted his favouritism but implored the king to understand the logic behind his old fashioned common sense. After all, although everyone has a cultural preference which ought to be accepted if not understood, there are times when an old fellow simply can’t take too much more in the way of frivolity and placid permissiveness of strange or unnatural customs for the sake of peaceful coexistence and human progress. The two friends each sternly defended points of view, as always, in the most amicable and polite manner, but after a long silence agreed to change the subject. “Shall we talk about local politics in Puerto de La Cruz?” enquired Father Christmas, with a mischievous smile, “or will you join me in a brandy up on my sledge?” he added with a twinkle in the eye.
Maintaining traditions and cultural obedience Father Christmas warmed himself with a brandy
while King Baltazar accepted a well sugared camomile tea listening to The Beatles. Just
before sunrise they bade each other farewell until, God willing, n next December.
15.12.2018 – 9.1.2019 Every year during the festive season the number of fires increases, often due to unintentional carelessness which can cause material or even personal damage. Fires most frequently break out in the living room. Therefore, the Tenerife fire brigade asks all islanders and visitors to pay special attention to situations and objects that may cause a fire. These include fireworks, kitchen burners, candles, electrical appliances and lighting elements. According to the Mapfre Foundation, three people died in 2017 in the Canary Islands as a result of fires in their homes. This puts the archipelago in third lowest place among the independent communities, after Asturias and Madrid. A total of 212 people died in this way throughout Spain. Electrical faults were the main cause of the fires in 18 per cent of all cases. Therefore, caution is advised when handling electrical items during the festive season. "Unintentionally starting a fire happens faster than you think. That is why we ask all islanders to be more careful, especially in the living room, where most fires occur," declared Javier Rodríguez Medina, president of the Tenerife fire brigade, at the beginning of the preChristmas period. Minor incidents are mostly provoked by misused or bad products. In addition to burns, other common injuries at this time of year are knife cuts or poisoning due to the consumption of certain foods.
Tips from the experts For example, when using fireworks and firecrackers, above all, care must be taken to ensure that underage children and adolescents do not handle them without supervision. Although it is forbidden to sell them to young people under

Never leave burning candles unattended, especially when tables or other objects are decorated with candles and when they are in the immediate vicinity of where many activities take place. They should preferably be moved to a safe place. Candles that are accidentally knocked over can start a fire or cause burns. Smokers should never smoke in bed or on the sofa. Recently extinguished cigarette butts should be soaked with water before being disposed of in the rubbish bin. In the kitchen,
special attention should be paid to the oven and open grills to avoid minor fires. Potholders or gloves should always be ready to hand so that cooking pots can be quickly removed from the oven if necessary. Care should be taken with very hot pots and pans. How to claim the cash back for a mortgage floor clause
By María González Sauret As we have already mentioned in previous articles, practically all mortgages signed in Spain in recent decades contain one or more clauses which have later been deemed abusive, so court claims are numerous. Unfortunately, most banks don’t want to reach an out-ofcourt settlement to benefit the client, so it’s necessary to go to the Courts designated for this type of procedure. Some Spanish courts are collapsed by claims over abusive mortgages clauses. However, this does not mean that we are going to lose the claim, as
in the vast majority of cases, practically all of them, the client beats the bank and in addition interest is generated in the client’s favour for each day that passes. The judicial procedure for abusive mortgage clauses takes place in Courts which are specialised in this area. It begins with a lawsuit, presented and signed by a lawyer and a solicitor, which must be accompanied by the mortgage deed, the extrajudicial claim made to the bank, the bank's response, if any, and the invoices of the mortgage costs if we have it. After a few months, when the Court begins to process the claim, they will
ask for your confirmation that your legal representatives have your permission to act on your behalf. This confirmation can be done free at any Court, or if you can’t be there in person, you can take out a Power of Attorney via a Notary, which will have a cost attached. After accrediting the aforementioned representation, the Court will request the bank to answer your claim. The bank will either argue against the request or accept it. A date will be then be set for a hearing before the parties' judge, which the clients do not need to attend. At that hearing, the petitions will be repeated and the evidence
each party intends to use will be confirmed and if no other evidence is necessary, the hearing will end at that point. A few weeks later the sentence condemning the bank to pay will be dictated. If the bank voluntarily pays everything, the procedure is finished and if not, an execution of a judicial order will be carried out and the bank will finally have to pay. If you still have any questions about a claim related to your mortgage, you can contact us by phone at 922 797 500 or by our email english@gylegal.es. Animal charities’ round up Julia and Laura made two dogs at the Acción del Sol refuge very happy when they took them out for a walk
Acción del Sol The two lovely girls pictured here, Julia and Laura, recently made two dogs at the refuge very happy by taking them out for a walk and giving them lots of love and affection which, besides obvious needs such as food, water and veterinary care, is all the dogs here want. The dogs love going out for a walk so please do come and take one out if you have time, they will really appreciate it. Once again it’s been a very busy time at the refuge with many dogs arriving, in various states of health. Small ones, big ones, some microchipped but mostly not, making it impossible for us to find their owners. All have come from the streets, some even with collars on. Please do ensure that your pet has its microchip with correct, up-to-date information to ensure your pet can be returned to you should they become lost. We also have again a large number of puppies and we urge you all to please adopt not buy, and please castrate or sterilise your dog to help reduce the evergrowing number of abandoned dogs on the island. With Christmas not too far away we would love people to donate a shoe box of goodies (such as dog treats, tinned food for our
older dogs, puppy milk, collars, doggie snacks, toys and chews) for the dogs. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge on December 20 between 2pm and 5pm. We are completely full up and reaching crisis point, with over 230 gorgeous dogs of all shapes and sizes looking for new loving homes. From Yorkshire terriers to Dalmatians we have every type imaginable ready for adoption. We don’t charge for adoptions but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every one of the dogs has a full clean bill of health and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, heartworm- and flea-free, has a passport and is sterilised, the last one being compulsory to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters here on Tenerife.

How you can help We need many things for the animals and refuge, such as products for our clinic and cleaning products and utensils, building materials, dog toys, leads, etc., tinned food for our elderly dogs, puppy milk, and dog jackets for when our dogs travel by flight to Germany, as well as materials to help with our educational programme (pens, paper, glue, play-doh and crayons). Every donation is greatly appreciated. In addition, we are desperately looking for people who are travelling to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Berlin or Frankfurt who would be prepared to escort a dog. All that’s needed is a little time at the airport: all necessary paperwork and handling of the dogs is done by AccionTier staff. Please do call us on 664 321

Canarian derby looms with both teams struggling By Chris Todd Local bragging rights are up for grabs soon, as fans eagerly await the Canarian Derby between arch rivals CD Tenerife and UD Las Palmas. The match will be played on December 16, at 5pm at the Siete Palmas Stadium in Gran Canaria. The home side are clear favourites but that has not deterred the blanquiazul faithful from snapping up all their 1,700 tickets allocation for the hop over to Gran Canaria. The last time that Tenerife won an away match was on April 1, but the supporters will hope and pray that on derby day anything can happen. But both teams go into the big match on poor to average form. In the last eleven weeks UD Las Palmas have only managed to win 11 out of 33 points whilst Tenerife fare only slightly better with 14 out of 33 points. Prestigious Football magazine World Soccer ranked the Canar-

Extremadura Enric Gallego who has scored 14 goals. And it was Naranjo who should have put the blanquiazules in front but instead of hitting the ball first time he decided to take a touch and his effort was blocked. To add further misery to his cause Naranjo was booked for a silly foul soon after and therefore will miss the Canarian derby at the weekend. The second half saw much of the same, the blanquiazules were giving it their all but lacked that cutting edge in front of goal. The introduction of Nano to the game livened up proceedings somewhat and he almost scored when his cute flick struck the post. However the
Youth Tournament main talking point of the evening was yet to happen. Tenerife substitute Joao Rodriguez was blatantly pushed over in the box but the referee waved play on. It was the clearest penalty you are ever likely to see. The striker, on loan from Chelsea FC, was incensed as were the 10,000 fans present in the stadium. Shocking decision! Tenerife pushed on for the win but the visitors looked dangerous on the break. The final minutes had a good flow but it just was not our day and the match finished with a frustrating 0-0 scoreline. These ‘unlucky/hard done by’ sort of matches will not win us any points come the end of the season so we need to put a good run together soon. President Miguel Concepción has thrown his last roll of the dice and appointed a new Director of Football. Victor Moreno will join the club this week after enjoying a fine spell at Alavés, a club that has risen from the 2nd B only a few years ago to currently enjoying a fifth place position in La Liga. So the next two matches before the short Christmas break are massive for Tenerife. First up of course is the big derby. That’s followed by a home game against league leaders Granada CF on Decemn ber 21 at 6pm.
Get your festive football fix at the annual youth tournament this Christmas. The event will be staged at the CD Marino stadium in Las Américas and entrance is free to all. Some of Europe’s top clubs will fight for the trophy with favourites being FC Barcelona. Last year the two main Canarian clubs, UD Las Palmas and CD Tenerife, were invited for the first time but played in a secondary competition. But due to their tremendous performances (especially Tenerife who reached the Final) they are both involved in the main tournament this time around. Matches to be played between December 27 and 29. See you there! n

Playa de Mazo
Walk for Life
Open sea crossing The second time the Travesía Playa de Mazo competition will take place, off the coast of Villa de Mazo in La Palma, will be on April 6, 2019. It’s limited to 150 participants and three different categories will be offered. The starting shot for the first race, which covers 5.5 kilometres, will be given at Playa de La Bajita. Those who decide to cover a distance of 3.5 kilometres will start at Playa de El Pocito. The short distance of only one kilometre, which starts at Punta Cangrejera, is also open to young people aged 13 years and over, provided they have the consent of their parents. At the finish line in Playa de Salamera, there will also be a mini swimming competition for the smallest water babies. It’s hoped that this swimming competition in front of one of the most beautiful coastal sections of La Palma will be established as a permanent feature in the archipelago’s sporting offer. “There are many sportsmen and women in the Canary Islands who particularly appreciate swimming in the open sea” explained local Mayor José María Pestana. He hopes that all participants will enjoy the competition. The swimming competition is also a solidarity initiative and proceeds will go to the Vicente Ferrer Foundation, which cares for people in the poorest areas of n India.
The XIV edition of Carrera por la Vida, Walk for Life, a walk or run for the benefit of women suffering from breast cancer and their families, takes place on December 16. Last year more than 4,500 people joined this event and over €20,000 were collected to help with the fight against cancer. This year too, a lively participation is expected when the starting signal is given on December 16 at 11am on the Golden Mile in Playa de Las Américas. The four kilometre route ends at the Plaza Salytien in Costa Adeje. Don't worry, you don't have to be a great athlete to take part in the race as most people complete it walking, though others prefer to run. If you can't be there, you can also support the initiative by buying the 2018 calendars or one of the accessories such as a bracelet or T-shirt. The proceeds will go to the Walk for Life Foundation represented by President Brigitte Gypen. The organisation supports the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC) and the Asociación Ámate de Mujeres con Cáncer de Mama
Pedro Alegre Alonso
(the association for breast cancer in Tenerife). Among other things, women suffering from breast cancer and their families are helped, for example, by financing special bras after breast surgery. "These special bras are very expensive and not every family can afford to buy them," explained Gypen. At the presentation of this year's race, the sponsor of the event also had his say. This year it's Agoney, an artist from Adeje who is now internationally known. "It is a great honour for me to be the sponsor of the event. I have already supported the initiative in previous editions, for example by singing. This time the two great singers Ainhoa and María will perform. We have wonderful talents here on the island, which we sometimes ignore. Come and listen to these voices, they are simply wonderful," challenged the
The presentation of this year’s Walk for Life - Carrera por la Vida. The mascot is still looking for a name Artiste Agoney contributed very personal memories as patron of the event
young singer, who became famous for his participation last year in the TV talent show Operación Triunfo, and later for his single Quizás. What is new this year is that the pink balloons that were a symbol of the race are being replaced by pink flags for the sake of the environment. There will also be a flashmob choreography at the finish and a new mascot in the shape of a butterfly will be presented, for which a name is still being sought. Agoney also had an emotional story to tell about the butterfly figure. "The butterfly has become a symbol for me. Because a few months ago my mother died and when I
stood on stage for the first time again, that was in Portugal, I experienced a very emotional moment. Suddenly I saw a monarch butterfly on the stage floor, I bent down and the butterfly sat on my hand. I finished the song with him," he said, deeply touched. The two mayors of the tourist metropolises, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga (Adeje) and José Julián Mena (Arona), promised during the presentation of the race that they would continue to fight for the expansion of the Southern Hospital and the establishment of a cancer department there so that those affected would no longer have to travel to the capital for therapy, as they have done so far. n

The Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, recently received a delegation from the Batistana Club at the Santa Cruz Town Hall, which this month won the Spanish championship in rhythmic gymnastics in Murcía. Aisha, Nieves, Ico and Daniela gave their all and secured the title. Valeria Díaz won the gold medal in the Infantile category and Anna Ordoñez the bronze
medal in the Juvenil category. Mayor Bermúdez congratulated the successful athletes and described the victory as a reward for their hard training and constant commitment. For coach Jackeline Batista, too, the success is a crowning achievement. For four days, 3,332 rhythmic gymnasts competed against each other in the Murcía Sports Palace in front of around n 5,000 spectators.

There has rarely been a better time for you to stabilise your purpose and steel your resolve. Cancer 22.06 - 22.07 It’s an old issue that has been waiting for your attention, and this requires sitting down to untangle all the threads that have created a knot, which hinders progress. The solstice initiates a rebirth in your life in all areas if you have patience. Leo 23.07 - 23.08 Mars brings tough love to your astrological House of Sexy Emotions. Libra 24.09 - 23.10 You now have the insight to correct past mistakes; your sex drive is not as pure and strong as it could be, but will become so if you will just get clearer about what really turns you on. Look to the Celtic Elder Moon, the New Moon on December 22 for inspiration.
