A First for the Canaries?

By Clio O’Flynn

Like the wives (and to a lesser extent husbands) of world leaders, Michelle Obama has already attracted headlines around the world for her style, her panache, her professional career (she is a lawyer) and even her sibling connections – her brother is Craig Robinson, men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University. On the night of his election, US President Obama called her “my best friend for the last 16 years ... the rock of our family, the love of my life”, and certainly if recently published advice from Cherie Blair and Ana Botella (wives of Tony Blair and José María Aznar) is heeded, she will need to continue to perform that concrete familial role, as her husband’s new job is likely to take its toll on family life.

Photo: Ava Lowery

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama has already more than one ‘first’ to her name – First Lady of the USA, first African American First Lady – will she also be the first First Lady to visit the Canary Islands? We hope so.

Michelle with Malia Ann and Sasha

The new couple in the White House in Washington have charmed the world, and if Juan Verde, the Gran Canarian who co-ordinated the Hispanic vote for Obama, has his way, they will be visiting these shores within a year or two. Geographically the Islands’location lends itself very much to Obama’s stated interest in increasing ties and aid to the African continent, and such a development also fits in well with the moves over recent years to promote the Canaries as a bridge between the USA and Europe and Africa.

All life is here, in miniature!

Landmark natural monuments and historic buildings have been landscaped in small scale (at a ratio of 1:25), giving you a bird’s eye view of the best of the archipelago in spectacular garden surroundings in La Orotava in North Tenerife. And with reproductions of the modern as well as the old, including an operational tram line, this is a great day out for all the family; bring the children and bring out the kid in you.

Around the world on a cruise ship Because the Panama Canal is such an exciting experience for everyone that visits and also because there is so much background information about how it was built I think the best way to approach this is by dividing the article into two. First I will write about the transit of the ship and then in the next article about the history of the canal.

At 0602 Aurora passed through the breakwaters at Cristobal, and embarked the Canal pilot. At 0713 with the linesmen on board, Aurora made her approaches to the Gatun locks and 15 minutes later made fast the first of six mules used to help her through the locks.

Ship’s log

Just to give a little bit of background to this amazing canal it is necessary to examine where it is and how it was built, as this is probably one of the most amazing constructions ever to be built in the 19th century. Panama is a country in Central America with coastlines on both the Caribbean and North Pacific. It is bordered by Colombia to the southeast and Costa Rica to the northwest, and is on the isthmus which

Aurora now approaching the Panama Canal, the ship’s clocks were retarded one hour to GMT -5 and at 0305 Aurora made radio contact with Cristobal Traffic, just after two hours later with all pre-arrival checks completed, the Captain rang ‘stand by below’.

forms the land bridge connecting North and South America. This country now controls one of the most important shipping routes in the world. It links the Atlantic Ocean with the North Pacific Ocean. Cruise ship passengers are often confused when they hear that their port at the Panama Canal’s eastern end will be Colón, and the next time they hear it, it will be Cristóbal. Are there two names for the same place they ask, or are they two different cities? The answer is that they are two different cities but so close to each other that they are often thought of as the same place. Both were named Christopher Columbus (Cristóbal Colón in Spanish). Colón on the Caribbean coast is the capital of Panama’s Colón province and has a population of

200,000 people. It is a major international port and after Hong Kong the world’s second largest Free Trade Zone. It was founded in 1860 when construction of the Panama Railroad began. In 1900 the majority of the inhabitants consisted of Jamaican negros and natives of mixed Spanish, Indian and African descent. Unfortunately nowadays the city has gone into decline and now has an unemployment rate of 40 per cent. At the same time Colón was being developed, the United States government was opening up a neighbouring port at Cristóbal. It lies in the Canal Zone at Limon Bay, at the very entrance to the eastern side of the canal. Cristóbal is not much to look at and offers very little in the way of shopping and sightseeing . One of the highlights of being on a ship going in the canal is to see the system of ‘mules’ which assist the vessel on her way through. These mules are locomotives weighing 55 tons and their 340 horsepower gives a 40,000 kilo towing capacity. They are used to brake, tow and maintain the ship in the chamber, avoiding contact with the walls. Their maximum towing speed is three miles an hour and whilst unloaded, they can travel at nine miles an hour. They are made by Mitsubishi and cost over two million dollars each. These machines are so effective that they can hold a ship of 32.3 metres (the maximum breadth) leaving a margin of 60 centimetres at each side.

10

When Aurora enters the Gatun Locks, a huge aquatic lift raises it in three consecutive steps to Lake Gatun at an altitude of 26 metres above sea level. Following the bed of the Chagres River, the ship sails some 38 kilometres to the entrance of the Gaillard Cut. When the ship is in Gatun Lake it is just so big that you would think that you were still at sea and looking at various islands. Gatun Lake has an area of 164 square miles and holds about 5.2 cubic kilometres of water, which is about the same amount that the Chagres River brings

A Panama Canal tug

down in a year. The Chagres River was dammed to create the lake and in doing so, some of the hilltops became islands. The biggest and best known of them is Barro Colorado Island, home of the world famous Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The lake is also important as a reservoir of water for the operation of the canal locks. Each time a ship transits the canal, 53 million US gallons of water is passed from the lake into the sea, with 14,000 vessels going through, this is a lot of water. The last time I was there, they were looking at ways of creating holding tanks at each of the locks to re-use the water they normally pump out. In the next issue we will follow Aurora as she heads for the Pedro Miguel Locks and towards the Pacific Ocean.

Mi Casa A project to refurbish an ageing Canarian house

Things must be getting desperate. Dinah has to take over tiling the bedroom and bathroom floor! And we still don’t have a bed. We spent four hours looking for the last Telefonica bill and called them with the details. They said they didn’t need them as we did not owe any money after all. They promised to call back and let me know when the phone would be installed. Robert is still digging, Dinah is painting. We are going to paint it white until we have decided on a colour scheme. Our daughter has bad memories of magnolia nightmares and has made us promise to wait until her next visit before making any decisions. We still don’t have any furniture!

30th July: Two days to go and Robert has to dig through the solid floor with a concrete breaker to find the drains.

1st August: Thank heavens we heard about Terry’s sale at the Rastro in Santa Úrsula as we don’t have a lot of cash to spare for furniture. We hope to buy mostly secondhand and replace it later. At the Rastro we bought a king size bed with orthopaedic mattress, as new for 80 euros, two bedside tables for a euro each and a dressing table for 20 euros.

In August, we will get the kitchen started so that we have somewhere to cook and store food. The next essential work will then be the roof. Telefonica never called back, so will we have a phone by the end of August?

MAGAZINE THE

Do you remember this? Well, with information from the neighbours, Robert finally located the drains and just managed to get the plumbing done in time. This will eventually be the ensuite to a guest bedroom, but for now, it is our only bathroom.

13

d r e a m h o m e DI Y The wardrobe is solid wood and cost 99 euros from Boom del Mueble.

2nd August: It’s a bit sparse, but the room is ready! The curtains were 9 euros each from Eurobufon in Icod. The net was 4 euros from El Kilo and the bedspread was 12 euros from the 99 shop in Puerto de la Cruz.

The new Honda Jazz We test drive the latest models

The previous Jazz was such a successful car that creating its successor was always going to be a challenge. First impressions of the new Honda Jazz are that this is a big car inside a small body. It is a compact vehicle, but nonetheless chunky and sturdy in its looks, and at the same time stylish and sophisticated. It is sure to attract a wide range of customers of all ages – from grandparents to younger families with babies, and at a time of financial instability, the range of low emission, high economy petrol engines makes the Jazz an attractive option for the increasing number of motorists wanting to downsize. The new Jazz is stylish and spacious inside

provide more space inside and extremely good visibility. The panoramic sunroof increases the feeling of spaciousness and light inside. The only problem with visibility is that from the driving position, it is virtually impossible to see the end of the bonnet, so parking has to be extremely intuitive. The excellent interior finish of the new Honda Jazz is reflected in those little touches, like the cockpit-style instrument panel, refrigerated glovebox, drinks holders in front of the gear lever, and extra storage spaces. Its design is contemporary with high quality materials and trim. Of particular note is the sporty design of the adjustable steering wheel and gear change lever. The six speaker audio system is of the latest generation with speed-dependent volume adjustment, and can reproduce mp3 and Winamp files. Hands free

loads even easier. Their versatility is equalled by a new Double-Trunk boot feature which can be configured in four ways to accommodate different-sized loads. The total luggage space in 1.4 models (with Double Trunk) is now 399 litres – greater than some MPVs and bettering all in the B-sector. The new Jazz does not have a spare wheel, but a can of emergency puncture repair spray. A number of changes to the suspension have improved comfort while a longer wheelbase and wider front track give greater agility. Honda’s stability

assist, VSA, is now available across the range. Stopping ability is increased with larger brake front callipers, and the brake pedal has a better feel, although the brakes are a little sharp and need careful and gentle handling. Front ventilated discs and rear discs are matched with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist. The overall height of Jazz remains the same (1,525mm) but its length has increased slightly by 55mm (to 3,900mm) and it is also slightly wider, by 20mm (to 1,695mm). Getting in and out of the car is now much easier, with wider-opening rear doors which open in three steps for added convenience in tight parking spots. On the safety side, dual front and side airbags are standard on all models, as are side curtain airbags and three-point seatbelts in all five seating positions. The front passenger airbag can also be deactivated so that a rear facing child seat can be fitted to the front seat and Jazz is now equipped with seatbelt reminders for both the front and rear. The front seats are fitted with active headrests to minimise the potential for whiplash injuries.

An extensive cargo space

The new Jazz is extremely comfortable, for both the driver and passengers. The driver’s seat has an armrest and has a range of adjustments. All seats offer good lumbar support which keeps you in position while back seat passengers also have good lumbar support and plenty of leg and head room. On the road, the new Jazz is a quiet, comfortable and relaxed drive. We drove the 1.4 litre 100hp version. 22

The driving position feels as if you are high up, relative to the road, with an excellent all round view. The steering is direct and progressive, gear changing is extremely smooth, with an indicator for economy changing. Various functions and indicators operate from the steering wheel, so nearly everything you need is within easy reach of your fingers. The Jazz has a dual tripometer which is a welcome feature and one which could come in very useful for logging distances. The headlights have an automatic on/off function and they can be adjusted vertically. The giant door mirrors add to the already good view, and retract with the push of a button. The Jazz feels sturdy, safe and stable on uneven and winding roads and is extremely manoeuvrable with a tiny 9.8 metre turning circle

The trim levels available are Elegance, Elegance Plus, Executive and Luxury. The new Jazz proves that if you are looking for a smaller and more economical car, you don’t need to compromise on equipment or comfort levels. Priced from 15,795 euros, the new Jazz represents excellent value and is now in stock at Aucasa. main courses, including moussaka, stifado, soutsoukia, keftedes, kleftico and souvlaki, or several Greek mese concoctions enabling you to try small portions of several dishes. Fish and seafood, pizzas, lamb, pork, steak, chicken and vegetarian dishes are available, and children have their own menu. For an aperitif, try an Ouzo, and if you really want to go Greek, Retsina or Nemea wine with your meal, or choose from their extensive wine list. In true Greek style, you could follow it with a Metaxa brandy. Unobtrusive live music provides a background to this spacious restaurant where grape vines dangle from the ceilings. The chef, Cristof, also sings for his supper. When we visited, we ordered tsatsiki and taramosalata with pitta bread, and for main course the mountain dish (a lamb speciality) and soutsoukia (Greek meatballs in a spicy sauce), all accompanied by fresh vegetables and rice. We asked for baklava for dessert, but it is so popular they had run out, so we followed the chef’s advice and ordered galaktoboureko, which was an absolutely delicious alternative. Our verdict? The excellent quality and presentation of the food, views across the sea to La Gomera and that typical Greek hospitality will surely make you want to return again and again.

If you have ever holidayed in Greece or the Greek islands, then you are sure to have fond memories of their tavernas and the wonderful food they serve. The Greek Corner, opposite the beach in Playa de las AmĂŠricas, which serves an ample range of traditional Greek and international dishes is bound to revive those memories.

Most people like the instant gratification of plants in the garden or in pots, particularly when it comes to herbs. You can start using them almost immediately if you start with plants, while you will have to wait a while to use herbs grown from seed. We created a bowl using rosemary, oregano, sage, coriander and chives. The more grassy herbs, like parsley, chives,

The items you will need

Herbs are a wonderful addition to almost any meal, and they are easy to grow at home, whether you have a huge garden or a small terrace. You could plant each herb in a separate terra cotta pot or plant a collection in a bowl or a long window box which could even be hung over your terrace wall. Some grow well in hanging baskets. Be sure to use containers which are food safe. Some glossy or brightly coloured pots contain lead or other materials which you don’t want in your food but plastic and most plain terra cotta pots are usually safe. Unsafe containers will usually have a warning label, so it should be easy to find something safe and decorative. Most herbs will do well in small pots or with three or four plants in one

Most herbs like a lot of sun and well-watered soil. If you notice them wilting (basil especially will let you know when it’s unhappy), move them out of direct sunlight for at least part of the day. When you harvest the leaves, dry them by hanging upside down for a few days and then store them in an airtight container. Alternatively, if you use the leaves fresh, you will need at least double the amount quoted in the recipe.

Say it with soap

If you’re looking for a crafty idea for a St. Valentine’s or Mother’s day gift what could be better than a 100 per cent natural hand-made soap by Alex Kirby. Alex came to Tenerife 15 years ago following the sun and stayed because she enjoyed the warmth and friendliness of the local population and she, “felt comfortable” here. She formed a steady relationship with Italian born Enrico and together they have sailed the Atlantic and travelled to the Caribbean and Venezuela, where their daughter was born, but always returned to Tenerife which they regard as their home.

Enrico and Alex are cleaning up with their wonderful hand-made soaps

38

NOVEMBER2009 FEBRUARY 2008

Originally, Enrico came over with a tour operator and then became involved in maritime excursions whilst Alex worked mainly in the island’s markets. Then one day she received some hand-made soaps from her brother in New York and she began to make some herself, experimenting with all the natural ingredients she could find in Masca where they live. “It started as a hobby but turned into a business,” Alex told us and Enrico added smiling, “it’s clean money”. They use pure glycerine as a base and scent and flavour the soaps with locally produced honey, goats’ milk, Canarian saffron, aloe vera extract, thyme,

sweet almond oil, lavender, geranium, fennel, kiwi and passion fruit and imported extracts such as elder flower, olive oil, green and red tea and ylang ylang. Tea tree oil soaps are particularly popular with pimply teens and others with skin problems. Plastic and latex moulds are used to make the various shapes they offer and the whole process takes about 24 hours for each batch. Alex is the designer, blender, head cook and bottle-washer and Enrico concentrates mainly on sales and marketing. All the pieces can be personalised to order with your own message or individual names using imported paints from Italy on palm tree bark and Alex can provide, “any shape, any scent and any colour. You can also include a plastic or metal logo or seasonal designs and advertising in any of the pieces, Alex even makes one which has its own incorporated loofah! They are ideal for beautiful and original corporate giveaways or perfect personalised gifts for baptisms or weddings for example. They look and smell good enough to eat and in fact the odd stray Russian has been known to take a bite out of one of their soap lizards when offered one to sniff!

That no longer applied, as there was little more than a stump, and that like some half-cooked Sunday joint, livid with burn marks. She sat, crooked against the cold stone wall, not able to prop herself up straight with her newly acquired imbalance. Dust covered her torn dress and brown clots of blood encrusted her blouse, bought just a couple of weeks ago for Hanukkah. In the twilight, she could just make out the wide band of lace at its neck, which she had been drawn to in the shop, still elegant, and the strange pattern it left on her skin, spray stencilled a pale red-grey. Beside her, lay the bodies or more precisely the remains of her two young children, blown to pieces in the blast just a few hours ago, unrecognisable now, except to one who had known every pore and fold in their young skin. Embedded in the flesh, were shards of willow-pattern china and scraps of congealed food, what remained of the family dinner, dispersed by the

Already, two rats had wandered in from the street and were sniffing at the banquet, trying to choose which meat to take home to their young – chicken or child. And the woman tried to shout, to shuffle her body enough to startle and scare the rats out of the room, but her legs would not respond to the command, and her voice would not create sound. Picking up a mangled fork, she threw it, left-handed, at one of the rats, which scurried a few feet away, before resuming its forage. This was no time to be scared off by missiles, not with such a feast in the offing. The silence was broken by another feint moan from her husband, buried under masonry in the far corner of the room. She knew he was there, he’d been conscious for an hour or more, back from the dead, though unseen. He might have been crying out for longer, but her hearing had only begun to return since the blast, and anyway, time had stopped for her. The dining table, now no more than splintered firewood, still smouldering, masked her view. Had she the power, she would have crawled across the children’s corpses to reach him, clear his body as best she could and maybe try to talk to him. But she couldn’t move, or talk. And besides, what would she say? “Why did you go to the camp yesterday? Why did you beat those boys and shoot their father? Didn’t you know they’re human beings? Didn’t you see their misery, their desperation?” What would be the point of accounting for this. Just another retribution. An injustice for an injustice. Pain began to drive out her thoughts, seeping, insidious from her torso, up her spine to her neck, through the clouded cortex. Pain jolted her, and forced her to drag herself slowly towards the moaning. Clearing a path with her one good hand, gently placing FEBRUARY 2009

her son’s arm closer to its body, she snaked across the floor and around the table. As she approached him, her husband seemed to hear her, and his one protruding leg moved back and forth in the air like some demented flag waver. Large stones and chunks of the plaster ceiling covered his body, but already she could see a pool of his blood, and knew he wouldn’t have long. The moaning became rhythmic, almost musical, rising and falling with his breathing. Her hearing was now sharper, stimulated by the intensifying pains in her head, and she knew this sound was no longer human, but the suffering of a dying animal. She began to clear rubble from his upper body, and eventually made out

the features of his twisted neck and shoulders. In the failing light, with her remaining strength, she raised a fist-sized rock above her head and brought it down hard on the skull before her, and without another sound, his body slackened. Time passed. Darkness filled the room. The rats did their work, and the woman lay still. The night air was fresh, and a breeze blew through the newly opened wall. Her skin was cold, but she didn’t feel the chill. She was no longer in this hell, but elsewhere. She felt the warmth of the morning sun, as she swept the veranda, while the children played together by her feet. She looked up through the vine leaves and saw bright rays, shafts of light, dappled, and pleasing.

Milou

When Fabi and Oscar decided to open Milou, their pet boutique in Callao Salvaje, they knew that it had to be much more than just a run of the mill pet shop or grooming salon. As dog owners and animal lovers the pair (Fabi is Belgian and Oscar is Argentinean) had initially thought about opening a kennel. However as that idea began to fade they looked at the idea of a boutique. They were quite sure that they didn’t want to sell pets, but did want to offer owners something new, a place that Milou Edif. would help them give their special friends a special treat, and offer a hair cutting/grooming section too. And so Milou’s was born – named after one of their own lovely dogs, and is a real treasure trove for pets. Apart from carrying top pet food brands (Iams, Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Whiskas to name a few) Milou also has one of the best quality ranges of toys on the island, delightful beds, pillows and blankets, essential scratching posts, poo collectors and feeding bowls and dispensers, and clothes and accessories that will make any pooch or purrer proud – the photo shows one very satisfied feline. Fabi has trained extensively in pet grooming and Oscar is also a qualified canine groomer. They also offer Reiki for your pets, and are often busy helping out animals who are being cared for by the voluntary charities in Tenerife. For all your pet’s needs and something extra to remind them of how special they are to you, visit Milou, in Callao Salvaje, Edificio Aquaviva (above Titanic Restaurant). Eclipse – a family bar and so much more They may have only been here for a year and a half, but you couldn’t imagine Callao Salvaje without Rhodri and Tal Jones– the two brothers and their families who took over the Eclipse bar in 2007 and have become an integral part of the local community. As Rhodri says, Eclipse is sometimes as much a community meeting place, with local businesses holding their staff lunches, someone else giving language classes, and another in with their dog for a quick coffee (“we’re definitely dog friendly, biscuits and water on offer”), as a bar/restaurant. And their menu and prices also reflect that Eclipse is for residents as much as for tourists, with a great variety on offer, from breakfasts to sandwiches, freshly made omelettes, baguettes, to full meals – steak, chicken, burgers, and all the trimmings, with kids’ portions on request. Price wise too Eclipse can’t be beaten – special offers include burger, chips and a drink for €5, or sirloin steak, chips and a drink for €7, or a midday glass of wine,

bread and olives, alioli and mojo sauce for just €2.50. Recent changes to the menu have also brought a more traditional Canarian flavour to the restaurant, reflecting their hugely international clientele and they promise you the best Barraquito on the islands. Between them the boys are fluent in English, Spanish and French. They have also integrated wholly into their new home, and are actively involved in the local football league and recently took part in the International Masters 7s tournament.

February is good for reflection, research and developing your inner resources. Private matters occupy much of your time and around the 9th there could be work or health routine changes. More exercise and healthy eating will make you feel more balanced and healthy. This is the time to generate business income and build your dreams. Friends or members of a group take up much time and your social life will be lively. Romantic relationships need attention from the 9th, as your business life has encroached on your leisure activities. Your main priority will be career and professional matters although you will want to retreat from the hustle and bustle. Domestic matters will need attention around the 9th, maybe home repairs or family dramas. Focus on striking a balance between work and home life. You feel restless and know that there is more to life than everyday routine. You want to discover new territory, both intellectual and physical, but time may not allow this. Communications, education, transport or children will need your attention around the 9th. This is a strategic month when you need to stand back, observe and research your options. Tax returns could be preoccupying, but your personal life is certainly hotting up. From the 9th, the cosmos will encourage you to make some financial changes in your life. Put your own projects on the backburner this month and do what you can to improve personal relationships. Your heart is on your sleeve. A Lunar eclipse in Leo on the 9th will encourage you to find a balance between dependence and independence. You are a workaholic and are definitely ticking off items on your ‘things to do’ list. Aches and pains, and little things going wrong may give you an overwhelming need for rest and spiritual renewal. Too much work and routine, it’s time to slow down. A fun month when you should be discovering all the things that bring joy to your life. Entertaining, romance, children, and hobbies are all more appealing than ever. A friend may need your help around the 9th when responsibilities to others become clear. Home and family activities occupy much of your time. Events around the 9th will encourage you to deal with professional issues, and to review or change your career goals. On a moment’s notice, you are required to perform. Keep cool and just do your best. There will be great conversations, happy news, and much to learn, with the possibility of information overload. You have spent too much time on mundane affairs recently, so you’re due for some fun. You want to take a leap of faith, especially around the 9th. Financial matters are in focus as you build your resources and figure out how to earn more. Around the 9th, a financial drama may occur when you must settle some of your debts, monetary or otherwise. Balance your comfort and security with the needs of others. A great month for personal interests, energy, charm, even for changing an aspect of your personal style. The past may come back to haunt you around the 5th, try to compromise and negotiate. A partner or relationship matter will need attention around the 9th.

Just like Sudoku you must fit digits into a grid of squares so that no digit is repeated within a row or column, but unlike Sudoku the 3x3 squares are replaced with greater-than and less-than symbols. The numbers 1 to 5 must fit into the 5x5 grid so that no number is repeated in a row or column, and so that the inequality (greater-than and less-than) signs are obeyed.
