what‘s new Ian Anderson, Dennis Liptrot and Robert Smith, were unusual in that they are all aged between 50 and 80 years, “isn’t that lovely” exclaimed the Bishop. With such a widespread area of responsibility, the Bishop spends a lot of his time travelling, although the Bishop’s Lodge is in Crawley, Sussex. He’s the third Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe since the dioceses were redrawn in 1980.

Carnaval for kids Fuentealta, the Vilaflor bottled water company, is sponsoring El Carnavalito, the first Carnaval event aimed exclusively at children. On March 5th, Fuentealta will be installing bouncy castles in the Plaza del Principe, Santa Cruz. There will be more than 20 monitors on hand to help with the organisation of workshops on various subjects including recycling, using Fuentealta products. Another of these workshops will be based on makeup, with a series of tattoos based on the brand’s mascot. Fuentealta staff will be handing out products and gifts to the children present on this day which promises to be great fun! It all happens between 12.30 and 6.30pm.

Saint Francis Anglican Chaplaincy

Travelling Bishop Bishop Right Reverend Doctor Geoffrey Rowell was in Los Gigantes recently to lead the celebration of the confirmation of four new members of the Anglican Church. Electric car charging points Electric cars are on the way, and those considering purchasing one have probably been wondering where they will be able to recharge its battery, apart from at home. The electricity supply company Endesa is preparing the first recharging points in the Canaries right now, and negotiations for the installation of charging points on public roads are in their final phase with the ayuntamientos of Santa Cruz and Las Palmas. Endesa is also negotiating with various companies. Cepsa has already installed charging points in two petrol stations and negotiations are under way with Disa who are also interested. At the same time, Endesa has signed an agreement with Telefónica to develop a technological solution which would

allow drivers to use public telephone boxes as vehicle charging points. The director general of institutional relations in the Canaries, José Manuel Valle denied that these charging points would put a strain on the electricity supply system and said that they would be powered by renewable energy.

Abama Golf & Spa Resort exhibition The art gallery at the Abama Golf &Spa Resort is hosting a new exhibition by Michel Martinet until March 31st. Entitled Fuegos de Colores, this is the second exhibition of Michel’s work to be displayed in this gallery which is dedicated to work by artists who have been inspired by the Canary Islands. Fuegos de Colores has been exhibited in various countries and received well. The works included are full of energy and vibrant colours, and show how the artist has been influenced by Tenerife, and by cave paintings. Michel Martinet was born in 1955 in Les Eyzies, France. The cave paintings found in this area fascinated him from a young age and have always played an important role in his work. This exhibition is open every day from 8am to 11pm.

Post-OT triumph for Charlie Charlie Karlsen, pictured with his music tutor Alejandra Mereb de Toledo from the Amae music and scenic arts academy in Los Cristianos, recently competed in Operación Triunfo, the TV contest based on a music academy and weekly televised galas. During his stay in the academy he had the opportunity to perform in a gala designed for TV, including working with

a live orchestra, backing singers and dancers on stage with him, a massive audience, not to mention learning to work with TV cameras. His next plans include a concert in Adeje, the date and venue for which is being discussed at the Town Hall. It is likely to take place very soon, possibly within a month. To keep up to date with Charlie, join him on Facebook (Facebook Charlie OT 2011).

Manuel Artiles

Choosing a queen TV personality Manuel Artiles has been chosen to present one of the annual Carnaval highlights, the Gala for the election of the Carnaval Queen, on March 2nd, in the Recinto Ferial at 9.30pm. Manuel Artiles is one of the best known faces on local television and works for Mírame Televisión as well as Televisión Canaria. According to the Gala director, Sergio García, he is a “great professional with whom I have had the honour of

working with on many Carnavals… “His voice is the one to proclaim ‘Santa Cruz now has a queen’”. Artiles was born in Gran Canaria in 1972 and completed third level studies in Education before he entered the world of television and radio. His ease as an interviewer and presenter has seen him become a very popular TV personality in both the Canary Islands and in Madrid.

New British Consul María Leng joined our Consulate team recently as British Consul to the Canary Islands. She joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Consulate service two and a half years ago as Vice Consul in the Balearics area, mainly based in Ibiza, after a very successful start to her career

in industry and service with the Scottish Government. Her warm personality and lilting Scottish accent and charm are bound to bring her many friends and success on the islands and we at Island Connections Media Group wish her a happy time in office here.

Exclusive Michal Novotny clinic Michal Novotny, who specialises in treating sports injuries, has just opened his first clinic in the Spa at the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque, Costa Adeje. His regular clients include Nadal, Federer, Agassi, Verdasco and Sharapova. Michal’s V.I.T. Plan is based on three basic points for the rehabilitation of lesions. He says, “the treatment of injuries in sporting professionals is one of the most complex aspects within sports medicine”. Michal is regarded as the best physiotherapist of the elite in the world of sport. According to him, “one of the most common errors committed by sports people is that they continue to compete or play without paying attention to their injuries. Those which at first are only small annoyances usually worsen with time, and what was at first a minor injury which would have been easy to treat, ends up turning into a chronic condition which is much more difficult to cure”. Novotny has started using his exclusive V.I.T. Plan (which stands for Very Intensive Treatment) at his new clinic. It is a pioneering system of treatment techniques based on the basic rules of physiotherapy. Novotny says that, “there is a relationship between 12

the evolution time of an injury and the time it takes to recover from it. The longer a person continues to play when he or she is suffering pain, the longer it will take to reach the stage where they can once again play without any discomfort”. The new V.I.T. service brings together the treatment techniques most used in professional sports, and involves an individual intensive programme of complete days, the number of which depends on the type of injury. This treatment could last for anything between three days and three weeks, with sessions of three to six hours daily, according to the injury and the condition of the patient. “I have started to use this system at the Spa in the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque because it has the infrastructure needed to carry out this intensive treatment plan”, said Novotny. Each day of treatment is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, and covers three areas: rehabilitation, nutrition and physical preparation. The rehabilitation consists of four parts: 1. The use of exercise machines and apparatus plus physical therapy (one to three hours a day), using shock waves, biological cellular regeneration, electric currents and thermal therapy march 2011

2. Manual therapy (one to three hours a day). This treatment is based on articular manipulation, movements, massage and facial therapy 3. Therapeutic exercises (one to two hours a day), complementing the first two stages with a programme of exercises in strength, stability and stretching. Depending on the injury, some of these exercises can be carried out in the Spa facilities, for example underwater movements or stretches in the sauna 4. Alternative therapies to ensure the best efficiency, incorporating oriental techniques such as acupuncture Nutrition is one of the basic aspects, combined with rest, needed to attain the objectives of V.I.T. It has been proved that good nutrition accompanied by vitamin supplements, can really help to reduce convalescence time. According to Novotny, “we create a personalised diet, which can be followed in 14

the hotel’s various restaurants during the patient’s stay. Also, the more sleep a patient has, the faster will be the regeneration of tissues or damaged structures”. Apart from the specific rehabilitation treatments, the player must continue exercising to keep in form. Novotny has noted that, “on many occasions, you can see that players who stop competing because of a serious injury eventually return to the game having put on a few kilos of weight. To combat this, we design a parallel physical preparation plan which doesn’t involve the damaged area. For example, if it is an arm injury, there is nothing to stop the player doing abdominal or leg exercises, or activities such as cycling or running. In the case of a knee injury, the player could work in a pool, do rowing or other gymnasium exercises for the upper body. For this, we have the Kinesis room which is equipped by Technogym, the Pilates room and the conventional march 2011

gymnasium, all in the Spa, not forgetting the beach at the hotel”. “Once a player can achieve this almost without pain (80 to 90 per cent), he or she can resume their habitual sport. For this, we create another programme in which that sport must be started at the right time, progressively, and with short sessions, until we are sure that the pain doesn’t reappear”, says Michal Novotny. To conclude, he has recommended a few simple exercises to combat the effects of tired legs or lumbar pain, common in many women and due to lack of exercise. He says, “women often wear high heels, which means the calf muscles have to work harder and the resulting imbalance can lead to Achilles heel”. Prevention is better than cure, and Novotny recommends, for example, walking on your heels. Another option is, while lying on your back on your bed, lift your legs and bring your toes as close to your head as possible, holding this position for as long as you can (also works the quadriceps). Bad posture or lack of exercise can cause lumbago. To avoid this and strengthen the lumbar region, Novotny says that, “all you have to do is a few abdominals every day. With these you can prevent lumbago and will also gain a flat tummy”. According to the physiotherapist, “a good exercise routine should include at least two exercises for the arms, two for the buttocks, one for legs and one for the abdomen. You don’t need to do many repeats, quality and persistence are more important. The ideal situation is to do the exercises daily, only for five minutes, and this could be first thing in the morning after drinking two glasses of water”. Top sports professionals such as Andrea Agassi, Robert Federer and Rafa Nadal can’t be wrong. Find out more about Michal Novotny’s new clinic at www.bahia-duque.com. 15

Los Gigantes

Giant options Tucked away from the Trade Winds and the Cold Canarian Current, the south of the island enjoys a unique land and sea climate and Los Gigantes, a neighbourhood of Santiago del Teide which includes the Los Gigantes marina, is one of the lovely coastal areas which benefit from this privileged location.

The area is named for the majestic cliffs which reach from Puerto de Santiago to the Punta del Teno, and although the majority of the cliffs fall within the borders of Buenavista del Norte, it is undoubtedly here where the most spectacular views can be enjoyed. At their feet sea depths of up to 30 metres provide a home for an enormous natural variety which provides a wealth of entertainment for lovers of all marine sports. The area was discovered as a possible tourist area one hot day in August 1960 by four people, one of whom was Juan Manuel Capdevielle. On seeing the most marvellous views that he had seen in his life, he immediately thought that the area would have a future as a tourist urbanisation. He formed AGIGANSA with two friends to develop the area and set up a meteorology station to monitor, over three years, the daily temperature of air and sea, cloud levels, the number of sunny days, sea conditions, wind and rain etc. and came to the conclusion that the climate in the area is one of the most benign on the planet. Capdevielle was also the first person to design and distribute a tourist leaflet for the area in four languages. Water based sports abound in Los Gigantes, but there are also hiking excursions which leave from the coast up to the hills, in particular to Masca ravine where a boat meets the walkers on the

beach and brings them back to the marina. There is also a lovely beach which is currently closed to make it safer for users but should be open soon. In the meantime an excellent pool and sunbathing complex, El Laguillo, is open every day from 9.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Sunday at just €3.50 per person, under 8s free. If you travel down from Tamaimo, stop at the Mirador Archipenque where there are spectacular views over the cliffs and down to the marina and Los Gigantes area. There’s also an excellent café and gift shop and a ceramic map on a notice board outside gives good guidance to the positioning of the main hotels and tourist complexes. A couple of curves after the mirador, you come to a small junction where continuing on the road curving to the left you will arrive in Puerto de Santiago and going straight on takes you to Los Gigantes. The signs can be confusing pointing you variably in the direction of Centro Urbano,

Playa los Guíos, Los Gigantes or Puerto Deportivo. But once into the one way system it’s difficult to lose your way if you keep heading down. The area is replete with shops of all varieties and a wide range of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and all pockets, but it is undoubtedly the marina and the activities that surround it that’s the main attraction for the area. It’s a rich coast, recognised as a European site of interest in the European Union’s Natura 2000 listing set up under the Habitats Directive and it’s soon to be declared a whale natural marine park. Of the 26 whale varieties that can be found at various times of the year in Canarian waters, 17 can be seen between this coast and La Gomera. As a result the area is particularly famous for whale and dolphin trips. Many species migrate through here and others such as the short finned pilot whale and bottle nosed dolphins make it their permanent home. Short and long trips are available as well as charter hire of various

types of seagoing craft and kayak trips for eye to eye contact with these fascinating sea creatures. Prices depend on the company, whether food and drink is provided and the length of the trip. Some include a stop off for a swim in a cave or similar. Please note. There are laws governing how close you get to the animals in whichever craft you may be in. Look out for the Blue boat symbol to be sure that your hosts are obeying the rules. If you hire a craft, and ignore those rules, apart from the stress you will put the animals through, it could cost you a lot of money in environmental fines. Remember that if you are out on the water you will need to apply sun cream more frequently and don’t forget your camera! 22

The renault Latitude

A first class travelling experience Renault Latitude is a generously-dimensioned saloon car. Its nicely balanced proportions and elegant lines point to the exceptional comfort and wellbeing occupants can look forward to. This sensation is confirmed by the refinement and high-quality finish of the cabin, as well as by the carefully selected materials and occupant friendly layout. This car also offers plenty of boot volume with easy loading and 60/40 folding rear seats, ample elbow and legroom, as well as numerous storage solutions including a chilled glovebox. Comfort features include triple zone automatic climate control with an unprecedented dualmode air purifying ioniser, a double scent diffuser and a four-mode massage driver’s seat. Renault Latitude’s other high-end features include a comprehensive range of audio systems, including the core-range 3D Sound by Arkamys® system and the high-end Renault Bose® Sound System. There is a choice of integrated navigation systems:

Carminat TomTom® Live and Carminat Bluetooth® DVD, as well as Bluetooth® telephony and Plug & Music digital connectivity. As you would expect from a car of this level, there are adaptive bi-Xenon cornering headlights, hands-free entry and ignition, with automatically locking doors as the card-holder walks away from the vehicle, an electronic parking brake facilitating hill starts and front and rear parking proximity sensors, plus a reversing camera. For safe reversing, the camera provides a view of the area behind the vehicle on the navigation system’s display. On the dashboard screen, meanwhile, a colour-coded image indicates the trajectory to follow to park, while a second image shows the path the car is in the process of taking based on the position of the steering wheel. As the doors open, the instrument panel’s centrally-located TFT (Thin Film Transistor) colour screen gradually lights up to welcome the driver. Then, when the engine is fired up, the LED backlit instruments come to life as the needles sweep across the two gauges and the graduations appear.

The spacious, extensively-equipped cabin is equipped with a specific, luxurious and curvacious dashboard made from quality materials. The controls for the driver aids and comfort features fall readily to hand and are clustered either around the steering wheel or on the console. The same attention has been paid to the quality and finish of the rest of the interior, for which there are choices for different tastes. The cruise control/speed limiter interface is simple and fun to use. In cruise control mode, a green cursor indicates the selected speed on the speedometer, in speed limiter mode the cursor is orange, but becomes red if the driver exceeds the selected speed. Renault Latitude’s big brakes ensure durable stopping power. Thanks to its 296mm or 320mm-diameter ventilated front discs (depending on engine) and 300mm-diameter rear discs, the car comes to a halt in just 39.5 metres after repeated stopping from 100kph. Five tyre sizes are available depending on engine and equipment level: 195/60 R16, 215/55 R16, 225/50 R17, 225/45 R18 and 235/45 R18. For enhanced driving enjoyment along twisty roads, Renault Latitude’s precise, low-ratio power steering comes with a stiffened column. Thanks to a ratio of 16:1 (that is, a 16-degree turn of the steering wheel march 2011

turns the wheels by one degree), manoeuvring is facilitated and the car’s handling is nimbler. The stiffer feel and reduced play allow motorists to benefit from a more direct feel and more precise feedback from the road by reducing the response time between the moment an instruction is given via the steering wheel and the moment the car turns. Versions powered by the V6 dCi 240 engine are equipped with variable-rate hydraulic power steering. The diesel versions of Renault Latitude are powered by one of three benchmark engines. The quiet, efficient 2.0-litre dCi (M9R) comes in a choice of two power outputs: 110kW and 127kW (150hp and 175hp). Linked to a manual gearbox (PK4), they deliver peak torque of 340Nm and 380Nm respectively at 2,000rpm, while the particularly fuel-efficient 150hp version emits less than 140g of CO2/km (combined cycle, with the manual gearbox). Driving through automatic transmission (AJ0), the responsive dCi 175 returns combined cycle fuel consumption of just 6.5 litres/100km and boasts maximum torque of 360Nm at 2,000rpm.

The Renault Latitude range also includes the latest Renault-developed six-cylinder engine, the 3.0 V6 dCi (V9X) which develops 177kW (240hp) at 3,750rpm. Maximum torque (450Nm) is available from 1,500rpm to combine energetic performance (1,000-metre standing start in 28.2 seconds) with contained combined cycle fuel consumption (7.2 litres/100km, equivalent to 188g of CO2/km). The safety features of the Renault Latitude include ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist and automatic activation of hazard warning lights, ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with CSV understeer control, tyre pressure monitoring system, adaptive driver and front passenger airbags, two dual-chamber thorax-groin lateral airbags (combined with twin side-impact sensors) and two curtain airbags, three-point seat belts with pretensioners and load limiter for all occupants, driver/front passenger seat belt reminder and ‘seat belt fastened’ light for the three rear seats, and three-point Isofix anchorage for the outer rear seats. Thanks to its carefully-honed aerodynamics, contained weight for its size (average for the model: 1,550kg) and the availability of two versions which qualify for the Renault eco² signature, Latitude provides evidence of Renault’s ongoing efforts in favour of the environment while at the same time providing a first class travelling experience.

Booking at this amazing restaurant in the Safari Centre in Playa de las Américas is not recommended, it’s practically essential if you hope to get a seat on the roomy terrace especially on busy weekend nights. We visited on a Friday and by 7.45 pm, there wasn’t a table free outside. With room to spare for each table of diners to enjoy private conversation and patio heaters to ensure a comfortable atmospheric

ambience, the terrace was very popular. Inside, stylish painted glass and mirrors and modern art, made a perfect setting too for the discerning diner. This is a steak house and fish specialist in the best sense of the word with prime cuts of a variety of meats and the best and freshest that the sea can offer, chargrilled and brought to the table in a range of imaginative or standard favourite sauces and accompanied by seasonal vegetables in their prime. quality produce prepared and served by professionals, a win – win situation where both the clients and the restaurant gain. Soups and starters are priced from €3.90 and included favourites such as stuffed mushrooms and grilled Canarian cheeses with coriander sauce as well as carpaccio or mussels and prawns. Salads including the restaurant’s version of Caesar and Waldorf are priced from €5.75. A heaven and haven for meat and fish lovers, both choices start at just €8.85.

Meat choices include various cuts of chicken, pork, veal, sirloin, duck, lamb and fillet steak prepared as you order and served with a variety of sauces depending on your choice. The mouth watering

selection includes Roquefort; mango ginger and shrimp; tomato, onion and herbs; red wine, peppers, garlic and mushroom, demiglace with bacon and smoked salmon flamed with vodka and Béarnaise

with asparagus and prawn. If you like a pepper and chilli mix you can choose to have your meat prepared with white, black, pink or green pepper and specialities include beef stroganoff and steak in béarnaise and port sauce and there is a mixed grill option or for those with a big appetite, the club steak 400-500g of prime beef with mushroom, onions and barbecue sauce. The fish and shellfish selection offers, white fish, tuna, an impressive mixed platter, scampi, sea bass, gilt head bream, Dover sole, salmon, king prawns, scallops and sea devil tail (a kind of large skate). Preparation options depending on your choice include: baked in salt; en papillote; 3

with peppers, garlic and white wine; fresh herbs; lemon cream with asparagus and spinach; mild curry sauce; peppers and pineapple and brandy cream, peppers and asparagus. Meat dishes come served with chef’s potatoes (dauphinoise with a piquant grated cheese during our visit) and vegetables and the seafood is served with rice or Canarian potatoes. Other side orders such as chips, jacket potatoes or vegetable gratin start at just €1.25. If your kids are used to smaller portions you can ask for the children’s menu which offers all their favourites like chicken nuggets, fish fingers, meat balls,

pizza and spaghetti Bolognese at €5.75. There is an ample wine list covering all the major wine producing areas in Spain, Mateus Rosé and French champagne as well as Spanish cava, sangria and champagne sangria, or a house wine at just €11.75. We chose a full bodied Gran Feudo reserva 2005 from Navarre which complemented our selections perfectly. You will automatically be brought a fresh bread roll with butter, garlic mayonnaise and a light, chopped salad with finely diced crab sticks, priced at €1.20, if you don’t require it or would prefer an alternative such as the garlic bread or tomato bread with ham, just tell the waiter. march 2011

The clam chowder (soup) was quite the best we have tried outside New England, thick and creamy with finely minced and whole clams, the garlic bread was thin slices of French bread, crunchy with toasting and served with just enough olive oil and crushed garlic. To cleanse the palate between courses we chose the Ensalada Gran Reserva, the best of the kitchen garden with sliced smoked goat’s cheese and banana.

Starters were: crunchy and tender chanterelle mushrooms with a fine coating of breadcrumbs and no sign of excess oil; mussels Costa Brava with a rich fresh tomato and garlic sauce and our favourite was a tuna fish carpaccio, wafer thin slices of fresh tuna covered with chopped peppers and onion and marinated with pepper, sea salt and fresh lemon juice. The carpaccio was extremely light and left plenty of room for the pleasures yet to come. A mixed kebab of veal, chicken and bacon was served in barbecue sauce with a swirl of pureed carrots and potato and a smaller kebab or roasted al dente vegetables. The palate could distinguish the individual spices and ingredients in the obviously home made exquisite sauce. Our second dining companion chose a fillet steak with Jack Daniels sauce. The fillet was just as he ordered it, pink in the middle and char grilled on the outside and the flavours of the Jamaican allspice and peppers were set off beautifully by the faint hint of Jack Daniels. Third choice and favourite was the sea bass in salt. It was brought to the table on the stainless steel cooking dish and expertly opened and filleted by the waiter at the table. That level of professionalism

I

is rare these days. The flesh of the fish was soft and delicate and as moist and succulent as could be. Desserts, if you have room after such generous portions, start at €3.70 and included on the night baked apples and pancakes, but we chose crema catalana and flambéed banana. Crema catalana can best be described as a light set custard with a crunchy grilled sugar topping and this was very light indeed, perfect after a large meal. The flambeéd bananas, buttery and redolent of the caramel sauce and the flamed Gran Marnier they had been cooked in were tangy, delicious and moreish. There is a superb selection of liqueur coffees and top brand liqueurs, brandies and whiskies on offer to finish your meal in style and we had such a great time, it took us a while to realise that time has passed, everyone else had gone and the staff were politely and patiently waiting for us to go home. Prime ingredients, preparation, presentation and service cannot be faulted. Many of the clients were obviously regular visitors and joked with their favourite waiters who made no secret of their joy in seeing them return once again to this excellent and very welcoming eatery. 37

Folk concert in Callao Salvaje The Callao Salvaje square was packed for the first Canarian Folklore concert in the village. With singers and musicians from the Municipal Folklore school the free concert was organised through the borough’s department of culture, and was, according to mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, “promoting popular traditions” in the village which reflects, he said, “the cosmopolitian nature of Adeje, and which is an ideal place to demonstrate that the new and the old can exist side by side”. Certainly those who made their way to the square on the evening of February 18th in Callao Salvaje were in delighted agreement, and thoroughly enjoyed the evening of music and song.

La Casa de la Miel La Casa de la Miel, at La Baranda in El Sauzal, celebrated its 15th anniversary in February. An initiative created by the Cabildo of Tenerife on February 10th 1996, its objective has always been to support and develop the island’s honey sector, and to define the quality level required for a honey to be denominated ‘miel del pais’.

Photos: L a Casa de la Miel

Nowadays, if you purchase honey with the ‘Miel de Tenerife’ label, you are buying one which is guaranteed to have been produced on the island and that the characteristics and original properties of the flowers and bees of Tenerife contained in the honey remain intact. La Casa de la Miel also has a visitors centre, situated between La Casa de la Miel and the Casa del Vino, where you can not only taste and purchase some delicious honies, but where activities such as cooking with honey are often organised.

Hotel Rural Finca La Hacienda

Rural restoration At one time many of the island farms in the countryside were run on the medianero system. Similar to the tenant farmer system in other areas, the owner provided the land, often accommodation and sometimes the seed, and the agricultural worker and his family provided the labour. When the crop was harvested the spoils were divided fifty-fifty. One such farm was in the then extraordinarily isolated area of Tierra del Trigo in the hills between Los Silos and El Tanque. However,

this was a large establishment and had not one medianero but seven living there, all earning a living with their families. It specialised mainly in cereals and potatoes initially, later diversifying into wine grapes, tomatoes, strawberries and vegetables. There was no road and no electricity until the 1960s. By the end of the last century most of the land had come into the hands of Teresa and Baudilio, both of whom are grandchildren of former medianeros on the farm. They had long since built themselves a modern property on the estate, but the large rambling farmhouse, some 150

years old or more, that had become the stables and storage rooms for potatoes etc., still stood. Their children had other careers and here, as in other areas, it sadly became uneconomical to farm the land. They decided to turn the picturesque farmhouse into a rural hotel. of bureaucracy, work began in 2004 and finished four years later. Stone walls were stripped and replastered, old wood sanded and made whole, wooden floors and ceilings replenished and restored, the tiles removed from the roof, a new secure roof installed and then the old tiles were carefully 41

replaced on top to maintain the outward aspect of the property. A lot of work, but beautifully and lovingly done, with a great deal of care given to quality and detail and no expense spared. Each of the rooms now bears the name of its previous function and the bar/restaurant is decorated with the fascinating tools that once were used upon the land. The hotel now offers nine separate apartments, from one to three bedrooms and no two are alike although they all have the stunningly lovely wooden ceilings and wooden or tiled floors. Each has heart-stopping views up the mountains or across the sea and there is a sunbathing area

and gardens lined with old fruit trees that lean and droop burdened branches over old stone walls. Every corner is a photo opportunity as old wooden fodder troughs have been turned into seats, wheels into chair backs and two exquisitely kept old threshing floors are used as dance floors for in-house parties. You can choose to cook for yourself in the wellequipped kitchen in your apartment, eat at the hotel’s excellent restaurant, book the barbecue for an outdoor feast or choose one of the hamlet’s two very cheap restaurants, both within easy walking distance. For those who want an active break, the hotel is only a short drive from Buenavista golf club, there’s a choice of two municipal pools, various beaches and some great scuba diving sites around as well as a shooting range and the famous and beautiful Cuevas Negras hiking area is only minutes away. They offer horse riding and dog kennel and stable accommodation for those who wish to enjoy a holiday with their pet. Cosy with heaters and open fires in Winter it is a rural retreat indeed in the Summer too with only the sound of the birds and the frogs to disturb the night as you sleep safely with your window open and the gentle breeze cooling the room – far from the sweat-soaked nights or artificial chill of air conditioners in other areas. Reservations can be made by calling 610694326 or 699034424 or by emailing info@fincalahacienda.es. More information on their website at www. fincalahacienda.es.

European 112 day

Saving lives If you love a man in a uniform then Adeje was the place to be on February 11th. The town was the central point for European celebrations on 112 day, the 20th anniversary of the introduction of an international emergency phone number which works in most countries in the continent. In the UK and Ireland, for instance, while most people would dial 999 if there’s been an accident or a fire, they could also call 112 and reach the emergency services with the same speed. Obviously for visitors to those countries this is a plus as it’s

48

the number they’re used to dialling. Here in Spain it’s the number most people know to ring, and according to Gregory Rohde, Executive Director of the E911 institute in Washington DC, it’s also never too early to start teaching your children to use the number. As he told us, “teach your children how to dial 112 – the life you might be saving could be your own”. On February 11th every branch of the emergency services had converged on Adeje, and were there for kids and adults alike to answer questions, explain how their particular branch of the services operates, and were happy to allow the public take a

look inside the ambulances, fire trucks, helicopters, as well as hoot horns, blow klaxons and set off sirens to their hearts‘ content. Adeje mayor JosĂŠ Miguel Rodriguez Fraga was honoured that Adeje had been chosen, and said that underlining the importance of the international aspect of 112 was an excellent way to transmit a valid sense of security to tourists as well as residents, which was a very important part of any tourist destination. Also present at the official event was JosĂŠ Miguel Ruano, regional minister for justice and security, and Carla Anderson, also from the E911 institute in the USA.

Forever King of Pop This fabulous musical based on Michael Jackson’s musical career is coming to the Canary Islands at the end of March. Fran Jackson, recognised by Sony Music Entertainment as Michael’s official double since 1996, and now by Michaels’ family, will perform songs and dance routines from the latter part of his career such as the moonwalk, while the most nostalgic parts will be interpreted by Mampuele. The soul, the magic and the voice of Michael will be on stage, supported by amazing special effects, and of course the energy and the intensity of a great tribute to the King of Pop which will take you back to the days of the Jackson Five.

50

Also taking part will be Yurena Molina, Canarian freestyle hip-hop champion and second finalist in the TV contest Fama, A Bailar! The aim of this show is to create an environment in which the audience can relive a great concert. With 40 artists on stage including a gospel choir, live musicians, singers and dancers, it is a very carefully worked production. There will also be two narrators who will take the audience through a fascinating history which runs through the greatest, universally known hits of Michael Jackson. This is not a pretentious show at all, and never refers to the artist’s personal life, only reflecting his love for music and his vision of the world. It will be a two and a half hour extravaganza which aims to bring all Michael

Jackson fans together, many of whom saw him on his tours. For lots of us here in Tenerife, we will be reminded of the night when we saw Michael’s concert in the port of Santa Cruz late in September 1993. It’s a must see for music lovers of all ages. The show, produced by Carlos López, premiered in Madrid’s Lope de Vega theatre in March 2010 and since then has visited the most important capitals

in Spain. 300,000 people have already seen it and now it’s our turn. Performances will take place at the Pabellon Santiago Martín in La Laguna from March 31st to April 3rd, with performance times to suit everyone, and at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Las Palmas from 6th to 8th April. Tickets are on sale now at €24 to €45 from www.generaltickets. com.
