nts e v E t s a P Induction Day by Lui Sing Yi, Kho Nyak Lek, Chan Mei Yen, Yee Chui Chin The months of November and December 2017 mark the official induction of the 8th Council Junior Associates (JAs) into ICMS. Besides presenting the results of their pre-induction tasks, the JAs also had a brief glimpse of ICMS operations during their first official day in the Council. While there were different highlights across the Chapters, all JAs concluded their day with excitement and anticipation for the upcoming rotational tasks that would help them determine which Division is their niche.
MY CHAPTER 11th Nov, 8:30 am MYT, Maybank Tower Kuala Lumpur
The induction day began with opening remarks by Tan Joey, the National Executive Director (NED) of the Malaysia Chapter. Later, the Forever Young team emerged as the champion for the pre-induction task presentations. The MY Chapter’s Induction Day also incorporated Divisional presentations by the respective Directors and a challenging exercise on ICMS Flagship events.
UK CHAPTER 11-12th Nov, 8.30am UKT, Imperial College London With the largest pool of JAs and longest Induction Day, UK Chapter had several stimulation activities with the JAs. One of them was the Integrated Crisis Simulation (ICS), where JAs were split into two large groups. Each group was then assigned to be an Operational Committee (OPCO) of an ICMS flagship event and were required to plan and execute on the event the next day. Crises were introduced near midnight to test that group’s ability to improvise. After the event was conducted, 7th Council Directors gave the JAs feedback on their performance in the simulation.
2018 HK CHAPTER
12th Nov, 1pm HKT, Cheung Lee Commercial Building
The day began with an ice-breaking activity, followed by a welcoming speech and sharing from Ng Zi Wei, the NED of the HK Chapter. The PentaJunior group walked away as the best presenting group for the pre-induction challenge, where they proposed how Associates could learn about creating applications. The HK Chapter ended the day with a reminder for the JAs to hold responsibility together in ICMS.

NA CHAPTER 12th Nov, 1pm EST, Zoom The NA Chapter has been the only unique Chapter which held their Induction Day virtually due to the geographical distribution of the Chapter across the entire North American continent. Despite not meeting in person, the Induction Day was an engaging and enjoyable session for all. Well dressed up JAs sat in front of their computers and spoke confidently on their ICMS Academy proposal. The session ended with a closing speech from Hisyam Takiudin, the NA NED, with a strong message to all JAs - “If you don’t see it, make it happen.”
SG CHAPTER 9th Dec, 9am SGT, Yale-NUS College The Induction Day started with an ice-breaking activity using M&M candies. JAs then presented what they have prepared for their pre-induction task which aims to address ICMS Academy’s plan for next year. Following this, the SG Chapter held a discussion on ICMS marketing strategies in SG, hosted by the External Outreach and Publicity (EOP) Director, Chloe Chan.
AlumNite2.0
by Aw Yee Chen
AlumNite returned with grandeur on the 1st of December at The Tale Bar in Mayfair, London. The event was designed as a networking session to connect Malaysian societies and industry leaders. A staggering number of 90 people in total were at AlumNite, including ICMS Associates, notable and accomplished Alumni, fellows from our Affiliates, 8th Council Junior Associates as well as representatives from UK-based Malaysian Societies. ICMS was honoured with the arrival of Alumni from the 1st and 2nd Council. We were also pleasantly surprised by a visit of our sponsor, EY. The event started off at 6pm with a warm welcome from UK’s National Executive Director, Chua Chong Yao. The next thing
2018
that followed was a powerful speech delivered by the very person who founded ICMS, Louis Chuo. He remarked on how far ICMS had come since it’s conception in 2011 and encouraged the coming Council to continue the march forward.
The attendees then seized the opportunity to mingle and expand their networks. They also garnered insights and valuable knowledge through sharing sessions by guest speakers, all of whom had achieved remarkable milestones in their respective industries.
Throughout the event, The Tale Bar was filled with an atmosphere of camaraderie and spirited conversation, accompanied nonetheless by delicious food. A photo session around 9.30pm marked the end of AlumNite, as attendees parted ways with strengthened ties and shared aspirations for the future.

Unilever-ICMS Roundtable
by Aw Yee Chen
On the 1st of December 2017, Unilever-ICMS Roundtable brought upon a refreshing experience to its participants who hailed from all over Malaysia. After a welcoming speech delivered by Tan Joey, the National Executive Director (NED), a token of appreciation was presented to the Unilever Ambassador, Yi Ling. At 9.45am, participants were lulled into worlds on how Unilever Food Solution (UFS) works through a video session. UFS continues to inspire people to cook smart and encourage companies to enhance their values. Carrying the motto “We free chefs to do what they love to do”, UFS is serving around 2 million consumers on daily basis. Frederick, the National Sale Manager of UFS, emphasized the value of UFS which is creativity, and strives to come up with creative products and servings. The event reached its peak at 10.30am, when the UFS Dipping Sauce Challenge began. Participants, in their own groups, were required to create a dipping sauce for carrots, potato chips and biscuits within 30 minutes. In the end, Team 3 and Team Justice League had secured the top spots with their mouth-watering sauces. The judges remarked that each team had indeed done a remarkable job and were impressed by the variety of pitching ideas. At 12.00pm, Yi Ling invited the participants to apply for their Future Leaders League programme, which was targeted to those who are looking out for internship and graduate employment opportunities. The day ended with a photo-taking session and, needless to say, a joyful lunch.

PwC-ICMS Roundtable: Let's Get Personal with PwC by Ang Sea Yen
January 2018 • Issue 20 • Winter The annual PwC – ICMS Roundtable happened on the 9th of December, organised by the Junior Associates of the 8th Council. Around 9.30am, the emcee, our very own Junior Associate, Shelyn Ooi, opened the ceremony by inviting the Executive Director of HR at PwC Malaysia, Ms. Sherriza for a welcoming speech. Following that, Matthew Wong, the Malaysia Chapter DNED presented a brief introduction of ICMS to the participants.
2018
The day started off with an interesting icebreaker where participants were given a sticky note to write down three adjectives describing themselves on one side, and asked a partner to put down an adjective on the other side after the delivery of an elevator pitch. Soon after, Ms. Sherriza started by first defining what ‘personal branding’ is and what is expected of an effective elevator pitch. 6 participants were selected to apply the learnings where she commented that it is important to keep the pitch short, concise and to include adjectives that articulate our personality (e.g: team player). Next, Mr. Kent, the Assistant Manager of HR and Ms. Adeline also shared tips on submitting applications and preparing for interviews. Participants were active in asking questions with the recruiters. Following that, an interactive mock interview section was hosted by Ms. Sherriza for participants to apply STAR techniques in competencies-based interviews scenarios. At around 12.30pm, Let’s Get Personal with PwC ended off with a photo-taking and lunch networking section. To end with, we would like to express our appreciation to the organizing committee and PwC Malaysia for the success.

Associate Features Industry Insights 2017 - From the Eyes of Aidiel Akbar Hussein by Tan Yenn Yi On the 29th and 30th of July 2017, ICMS’ Junior Associate Aidiel Akbar Hussein and his team were crowned overall champion of Industry Insights 2017 after winning four out of the six challenges crafted by Sunway, EY, Maybank and Unilever. This victory was beyond his team’s expectations. Aidiel gave credit to his teammates and mentioned that it would not have been possible if it were not for the joint effort of his ‘dream team’. Despite coming from different backgrounds, this group of like-minded individuals still managed to drive one another towards victory. They were driven and motivated to work towards the same goal. Through the experiences of various challenges, Aidiel managed to develop different skills sets. During the Sunway challenge, Aidiel gained insights on how to further instill the Fourth Industrial Revolution and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals elements into the property industry. He also had the opportunity to simulate as a consultant for a giant retailer who was encountering difficulties with their operations due to inefficiencies in an outsourced supplier for the EY challenge. In Aidiel’s opinion, the task given by Axiata group was the most challenging of all. His team was required to brainstorm on a new, detailed mobile plan targeted towards a specific customer group. The plan should promise new and unique experiences for these customers. Furthermore, the plan has to provide highest return with the lowest possible cost incurred. During the Maybank task, Aidiel was involved in a trading game which require them to trade with other teams. Later, Aidiel’s team managed to catch the attention of the Unilever’s representative with their ideas of upgrading the popular Magnum ice cream when they were required to improvise on an existing product. Last but not least, Aidiel’s team also challenged themselves to come up with a game-changing initiative for the energy industry during the session with Sapura Energy. Through this event, Aidiel had the opportunity to showcase his talent to the industry leaders and also enhance his capabilities in critical thinking, managerial and decision-making skills. For this opportunity, he felt extremely grateful as these skills are crucial in allowing him to stay relevant and competent in the competitive current industry.
2018 “Investing my whole 2 days for Industry Insights 2017 was undoubtedly the best decision I have made over the summer,” said Aidiel. The opportunities and skill sets that Aidiel were exposed to during these events will definitely bring him to greater heights!

Youth Leadership Academy - Project Pedal by Vicky Fan
Earlier this summer, I was honoured to be part of McKinsey & Company's Youth Leadership Academy, where my team and I successfully executed Project Pedal, a social enterprise driven by a single goal: to provide accessible healthcare to the needy. Our mission was to raise awareness on rural areas with very little or no access to healthcare and to create social impact by cycling to those in the rural communities to provide essential healthcare while exposing them to modern medical knowledge. The 2 beneficiaries from our pilot project were the cyclists and the Orang Asli, and was proudly sponsored by Pharmaniaga Berhad, PwC and The Seekers. The Project Pedal team managed to gather a team of 20 cyclists who delivered 40 medical kits to 25 families in the Orang Asli village, a significant 30% of the population. The 11km cycling journey allowed the cyclists to acquire a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the villagers in accessing healthcare services while providing them with a creative alternative to maintain fitness and health. On the other hand, each Orang Asli family received a medical kit that contains basic medicine and first aid essentials with infographics explaining the usage and dosage of each item. The medical kit serves as a ‘rainy day kit’ at times of emergency to the villagers (the nearest clinic is a 30 minute motorbike ride away and the nearest hospital is an hour away). The medical kit also exposed the villagers to the usage of modern medicine (some of them have never seen the most basic items in the kit such as paracetamol pills and plasters).
2018 All in all, it was a very rewarding experience. The whole planning process has taught me so much about project management (especially important when time was not in our favour) and team management. As cliché as it may sound, teamwork was the main contributing factor that allowed our 6 men team to pull through a social themed cyclathon.
Through Project Pedal, we believe that basic healthcare should not be a privilege, it is a right. I also have truly understood what creating social impact entails. It’s not just about coming up with creative ideas to solve social issues or jumping onto every volunteering opportunity; it’s about exerting life-changing impact on an individual. On the day of the pilot project, I did not only hand out medical kits to the villagers, I have taught someone who has never seen nor heard of a plaster, how to use one.

The second iteration of the ICMS Venture Challenge (IVEC) will focus on the complexities of building your own business and the realities of sustaining a startup in this age. Participants will be interacting in teams to dissect problems faced by entrepreneurs, such as technology management or investor relations. The creation of new ideas that will fill up

government initiatives such as MaGIC, a global accelerator programme which trains startups to be investment ready in
4 months, IVEC intends to support participants in learning skills required to succeed in the market. Moving forward, the next generation of jobs could be created by these entrepreneurs. Through IVEC, participants would enhance their
knowledge in entrepreneurial problems and their public speaking skills in a world that requires soft skills alongside technical skills to succeed.

Besides that, Zhao Wang talks about playing the long game by engaging thought leaders on LinkedIn to build your presence. The workshop can be accessed here courtesy of the Secretarial Division (SD).
