A SPEECH OF CAKE 2.0

6th January On the 6th of January 2018, ICMS organised an event in collaboration with our Partner, EY, that aimed to enhance Associates' public speaking skills. Taking place at Menara Millennium, the event was attended by Associates of the 7th and 8th Councils. The emcee, Samuel Woo, warmed the participants up before inviting the 7th Council Deputy National Executive Director, Matthew Wong to lead with his opening speech. A token of appreciation was also presented to EY.

The event welcomed Mr Lee Kok Choong, the Director of Learning and Learning Development Department of EY, to present a workshop on ‘Creating A High Impact Presentation’. Mr Lee believes that a great speaker is able to ‘reset’ their speeches according to the interests of their audience. He structured his presentation into four parts: Structuring Your Presentation, Visual Design Tips, Public Speaking Skills and Tackling Questions. These parts were accompanied by relevant activities that helped the participants to further comprehend the content of the workshop. As for the main activity, the participants were instructed to present their initiatives to reduce poverty in both East and West Malaysia. There were a number of ideas proposed by the presenters but the importance of education became the common theme that was often discussed in most of the pitches. Overall, the event successfully achieved its objective in providing the participants with an opportunity to think critically to give excellent presentations. On behalf of ICMS, we extend our deepest gratitude to the organising committee and EY for the successful collaboration.

He shared the types of organisation risks and the ways to mitigate risks. Mr. Fad’l Mohamed, deputy CEO of Maybank Investment Bank also delivered his valuable experiences within the investment banking sector for the R (realistic) personality group. Participants were given the opportunity to mingle with the representatives from Maybank during the networking lunch. A case study challenge warmed participants up again, and teams had to compete on a Kahoot quiz to obtain their pitching venue. Prior to the finalists’ presentations, Ms. Fabiola Netto, a Global Maybank Apprentice provided feedback to the teams. She mentioned the necessity to participants to immerse themselves into a situation to get a solid grasp. Two groups, SamBank, representing the banks and MingCoin, representing the fintech side were announced as the finalists. SamBank’s solution ensured minimal process to provide an easy application for users. However, MingCoin proposed to decrease financial illiteracy as it imprisoned the citizens’ financial freedom. ICMS Portal Initiated by the 7th Council Secretarial Division, the ICMS Portal seeks to centralise all ICMS related information, templates, links and guides. The Portal aims to be a third virtual workspace for all Directors and Associates, and a crowd-sourced encyclopaedia within the Council for each Chapter/Division/OPCO. It also stores information on operational matters - to ensure continued support between each other in the Council. Following the useful feedback from the entire Council, our intranet has undergone a meaningful restructuring and redesigning. In an effort to increase Council-wide engagement and utilisation of the Portal, the Portal Guide and Did You Know? Fun Facts have also been introduced. Investment Banking Hub

ICMS Consulting Hub

By Seah Eu Hen

By Seah Eu Hen

Since its inception, the ICMS Consulting Group (ICG) - an initiative spearheaded by Ong Zhuhan, also ICG's founder and Managing Director managed to launch 4 engagements in June 2017 with a variety of clients, including MNCs, startups and social enterprises. The engagements also featured Alumni mentors from McKinsey & Co, Strategy&, EY and many more, who guided the consultants throughout the engagements. The initiative featured the 5th Council Chief Executive Director, Choong Jien Yue, who conducted the induction and the following networking dinner, which was attended by over 20 Associates and 5 Alumni.

In an effort to develop and equip Associates of the Council to take on the challenges of the Investment & Banking sector, the I&B Hub under ICMS Academy led by Husna Nazrei has launched its Investment Research Program over last December. A total of 26 Associates were inducted into the program and they are divided into three groups with a specific focus of Industrials, Consumer Retail, and Services. Designed to provide accelerated learning, the program runs for 2.5 months. The participating Associates will be assigned to groups of 3-4 to analyse a public listed company traded on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) and make a recommendation.

Aspired with the desire to develop ICG further, three new engagements are then introduced: The Case Connect System, Consulting Crash Course and Company Ask Me Anything Series. The Case Connect System connects mentors to aspiring consultants to develop their case interview skills; The Consulting Crash Course is a series of online workshops to expose and teach Associates the skills required for consulting, and The Company Ask Me Anything Series is a virtual workshop series which featured various consulting firms answering questions pertaining to the industry. These newly launched engagements have started since early December 2017 and will continue to run through until the end of 2018.

Mirroring the Investment & Banking industry closely, Associates are given the title of Junior Analyst where they work hand-in-hand with Senior Analysts which features alumni such as Shyue Jer and Zhan Ming who are experienced professionals within the industry.

With the resounding success of the initial engagements of ICG, recruitment for the upcoming engagements in 2018 has 20 newly minted consultants working on 3 different engagements which will run through 6-8 weeks. Of them, the induction for Project Leaders, featuring Lim Jian Hong who is the Managing Director of Oxford Strategy Group and covering stakeholder management, work scopes, slide making (among other topics), was concluded on 22th January. It is hoped that the upcoming engagements drive further success for ICG and a continuous learning experience for the consultants.

Associate Features 2nd Runner up KICC COMPETITION

RYNN

Coincidence brought me and my team together as we participated in KICC 2018. What started off as an interest in the competition led me to reach out to Amerr, a friend whom I knew from being teammates in ICAEW RBC last year. Because of each others’ tight schedule, we were only able to finalise our team a week before the submission deadline. It was a diverse team with myself from Economics, Shin Kai from Mechanical Engineering, Pei Shan and Amerr from Finance and Accounting. The first submission was rather straightforward, we had to do a case study and film a video proposing our solutions for it. The topic was centred around Crisis Management for a Dubai Theme Park Hotel. The case was challenging but the time constraint posed to be a bigger issue. We had to finish our analysis and come up with solutions in one night, followed by a filming within two days. Finals arrived and we had to rush our presentation too as it fell right in the middle of our exam season. We managed to do a case practice two days before the Finals but we were still nervous and didn't feel prepared. Day of the competition finally came and we were given a case on improving the business performance of a Dubai hotel group. We had two hours to prepare our solution before presenting it. Time was short but we managed to do it and presented our recommendations. In the end what I thought stood us out from other teams was that we had a comprehensive structure and good storyboarding. Our ideas were conveyed with structure in a way that allowed judges to understand our thought process. We were also able to bring a story to the audience, convincing them that this presentation is relevant to them. These are a few things that I think are important for any presentations. You need to to be able to think structurally and tell a good story. One of the key takeaways is time management. Given how rushed things were always done, I definitely feel that we could have done better in terms of how we allocate time to our tasks. We were lucky that it wasn't a huge issue this time but we may not be as lucky next time. The other key takeaway will have to be perseverance. Many times, we could have given up but we didn't. Despite the time constraint and workloads, we pushed through because we really wanted to do it, so I guess the message is we may not succeed even though we tried our best but if we don't try our best we will definitely fail.

JACCY

A TRIP TO KOREA

After my five-month exchange in Seoul National University (SNU), I would like to share some interesting facts about Korea’s culture and society. Thinking back on my exchange life, it basically revolved around the four golden themes of life, namely Eat, Sleep, Play and Drink. For this article, I will focus on Eat & Drink. Speaking about Korean food, perhaps only a few dishes may come to your mind. Kimchi (fermented cabbage), Tteokbokki (Korean rice cake), Korean BBQ, Korean mixed rice (Bibimbap) . To be frank, there is actually much more variety of Korean food when you try to eat like the locals. Hence I was never bored of Korean food during my entire stay in Korea. As I stayed on campus, I did get bored of the cafeteria food sometimes. More often than not, I would instead opt to order delivery for dinner and supper with my friends. One interesting fact about Korea’s delivery services is that they deliver reusable utensils (bowls, plates) to your place. You may wonder then, how would the customers return the utensils back to the owner? Well, the delivery man will be back to the place a few hours later for utensil collection.

My first attempt on ordering delivery was unforgettable as I did not know what is the Korean name for the common area of my dorm. Thereafter, my friends and I memorised the Korean name of the place and we never again had to ask for help. Sometimes, when we ordered over a certain amount, the owner of the restaurant would generously give us some free food which was often the happiest moment of our dinner. I was so amazed by the owners’ kindness and the convenience of having delivery services even at early midnight. The ‘eating culture’ aside, it is time for the ‘drinking culture’ in Korea. I am confident to conclude that every Koreans’ favourite drink is either coffee or soju/alcohol. After almost every meal, locals will move to a nearby coffee shop for a cup of coffee with most getting Americano. On SNU campus, coffee shops can always be found next to cafeterias. Not to mention, coffee shops are everywhere in Seoul. Also, you will not be surprised seeing students drinking soju on campus. As spring approaches and the weather gets warmer, students will have drinking gatherings on campus. I was shocked when I first saw students drinking on campus and wonder if they would be entering classroom tipsy. Experiencing all the cultural differences in Korea was one of the most wonderful experiences in my life.I believe that everyone should grab the opportunity to go for an exchange programme during your studies.
