ts n e v E p i h s g Fla INDUSTRY INSIGHTS 2017 by June

Ong

The fifth instalment of ICMS’ flagship event, Industry Insights 2017 was held on the 29th and 30th of July at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa, with the aim of bridging the gap of knowledge between different industries in Malaysia and students via insights brought by leaders across various industries. Following last year’s success, the team decided to emulate this achievement by mixing up the workshop structures with a series of case studies and games, accompanied by helpful introductions to the industry by the corporate representatives themselves. The theme this year was "The Challenges

& Opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”. The organising committee hoped that the participants were able to address these questions relating to how businesses are adapting to the changes in their respective industries and its impact on the demands of the workplace. Day One’s highlights included a panel talk hosted by Sunway, an EY session which gave the participants a deeper insight into the different service lines of EY as well as Axiata’s interesting case study challenge. Day Two kept up momentum with a series of interesting sessions

such as Maybank investment pitch, Unilever’s marketing competition, Sapura’s eyeopening case study workshop and finally, an exhilarating design thinking workshop. The event came to a concluding end with a prize-giving ceremony and closing speech. Overall, Industry Insights was a success and the participants left the event, impressed with their learnings and experience. Industry Insights would not have been possible without the hardwork and dedication of the organising committee, led by Project Director Timothy Ethan Teng and his Deputies, Theong Jin Wen (Leone) and Michael Tiew Wee Ping. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the members of the organising committee of Industry Insights. Without all this support, this event could not have turned into a fruitful success.

by Mithran Radha Krishnan & Marissa Ooi for a presentation, followed by a 15 minute Q&A session. The best performing team from each room then proceeded to the Grand Finals. After final presentations and judging, YB Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Malaysian Second Minister of International Trade and Industry joined in for the closing ceremony.

On the 19th and 20th of August 2017, 80 participants gathered at Sunway University for MPPC’s 7th instalment. Themed “Sustainable Development: Core Focus on Economic Inequality”, it exposed participants to the ins and outs of public policy crafting. Day One began with an officiation by Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin, Founding President of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), who also delivered a speech comparing Malaysia against its peers in Asia with regards to inclusive growth. The keynote speech on sustainable development was delivered by Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Michael Yeoh, CEO of the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI). He summarised Malaysia’s progress, noting that although it had exceeded economists’ expectations of economic performance, the nation still has much room for improvement if it aims to be sustainably developed by 2020. What followed was a sequence of workshops and talks which equipped participants with more in-depth knowledge of public policy. A ‘Policy 101’ session by Ng Yeen Seen, Chief Executive Office of the Center for Research, Advisory and Technology (CREATE) dived deep into the key considerations involved in the crafting of public policy. It was emphasised that running a pilot to validate effectiveness and feasibility is a must for any major policy. After lunch, attendees were divided into focus groups by the World Bank Group and Jeffrey Sachs Center, and subsequent talks from EY and the Perdana Fellows Alumni Association. This was followed by a Statistics in Public Policy workshop and a brief mentoring session in preparation for the Residential Challenge. On Day Two, the 20 participating teams were segregated into 5 rooms, each with a panel of 4-5 judges. Each team was allotted 15 minutes

Upon arrival at the resort, the Professional Career Development Hub (PCD) conducted two simulations with an effort to group Associates with people they are least likely to work with according to their test results. It challenged participants to be more open-minded to different perspectives and critiques from others and prepare themselves better in reflecting on their future career prospects. To ensure the participants have a good balance between work and fun, IAP also facilitated a series of interesting group activities where participants enjoyed themselves and bonded with each other. Shoutout to IAP and ICMS Academy for a successful camp!

An audience member asked, “How can Malaysian youths be more involved in contributing to sustainable development?” Dr. Young called for all who strive for a more sustainable future to constantly evaluate their best possible version of society, and use any means available to achieve that vision. The adoption of such a mindset allows for fruitful and creative thinking regardless of sector or interest toward a sustainable future – a future where economic prosperity and sustainability will be addressed from all angles.

On the 22nd of July 2017, ICMS hosted a parallel session alongside the World Bank during the inaugural Malaysian Students’ Global Alliance (MSGA) Summit. The session aimed to promote Sustainable Economic Development. Dr. Young Eun Kim, the World Bank representative, spoke on quantifying the productivity of a nation; highlighting five different drivers of productivity: Innovation, Education, Efficiency, Infrastructure, and Institutions. Malaysia is above average among global upper middle-income groups for median total factor productivity.

finance industry. For fresh graduates entering the workforce, I&B typically hires from a diverse range of backgrounds as long as you are numerate and the right fit for the job. In his words, junior employees should be prepared to make tradeoffs especially in highintensity business units, and employees looking to make an impact must be willing to learn, possess maturity, and a good attitude. Contrary to popular belief, investment banking does not invest! They are financial intermediaries, connecting buyers/sellers to debt/equity/financial products. They are critically important because of disinformation in the market as they provide market know-how as well as objectivity and credibility. Ultimately, I&B’s clients, including corporations grow the economy and contribute to the economic multiplication process. As a takeaway, Davies said "It is down to you as individuals. A lot of you will begin employment with very strong credentials, but they alone are not enough. Work on your interpersonal skills, your personal confidence, and your ability to engage in broad conversations not limited to your subject. Have a worldview - be a broad-minded, dynamic individual."

Following that, the participants practiced their negotiation and trading skills in an OBOR-inspired trading game, in which they were divided into four fictional countries. The participants found the game educationally interesting. In the afternoon, Ms. Sufiartie Sudyono from Microsoft hosted an interactive workshop on jump starting a tech career in the digital-transforming age. Sharing sessions on personal internship experience with Microsoft and resume writing as well as interview tips were delivered by Ms. Chan Li Shing and Mr. Edwin Seah respectively. On the 27th of August, around 47 ICMS Alumni and Associates showed up at Offside, Bandar Sunway for AlumNite, a social gathering for the ICMS network after the eventful summer. One of its kind, AlumNite serves to give a chance for Associates to mingle with new faces as well as strengthen their bond with familiar ones in a relaxed setting. After dinner came the opening speeches by the Alumni President, Choong Jien Yue and the current Chief Executive Director, Christine Ding to kickstart the night. s e r u t a e F e t a i Assoc SUNWAY SUMMER PROGRAMME 2017 by Matthew Wong Chi Siang

INTERNING AT MAXIS by

Kong

Bin

Xuan

During the summer, I was blessed to have the opportunity to undergo a short internship with Maxis. I felt very welcomed working at Maxis as the working environment was very friendly and conducive. Maxis has an open office concept which makes it easier for us to communicate with other co-workers. The Maxis Internship Programme is very well thought out as it is designed to allow the interns to bond together and blend into the company easily. Various activities and events are also held from time to time for both the workers and interns to allow us to obtain knowledge and experience on subjects including those beyond the scope of our work. I was assigned as an intern at the Information Services division, under the Business Intelligence team. I was in charge of helping my co-workers with their tasks and had the opportunity to put my computing knowledge into practice and perform actual data analysis of the Maxis customer database. My job scope included extracting data from the database, creating reports from the data based on customer requirements, analysing as well as comparing backend and business data. The biggest challenge I had while working in Maxis is that I had to pick up on a lot of skills before I get to start on any work. Most of the skills I learned at my university were not applicable here because Maxis uses different software and programs. Therefore I spent the first week learning how to use their available tools. One of my colleagues offered a piece of valuable advice; that learning technical skills are not necessarily the most important lesson of an internship, picking up on soft skills is. He told me that during my internship I should learn how to communicate and work with other colleagues effectively, improve on my presentation and decision making skills, and expand my network. I found his advice to be extremely useful as soft skills are the skills that I will carry through my entire working career and will be useful despite which field I am in. I might have picked up on a lot of technical skills during my internship but those skills might not be relevant anymore in the near future as technology is growing exponentially. However, soft skills are less likely to fall out of relevance hence they are the most valuable gains throughout my internship in Maxis thus far.

On the 12th and 13th of August, ICMS Associates attended the Sunway Summer Programme 2017. The programme began with an insightful session into different Sunway businesses as well as a walking tour of the Sunway City. Participants were allowed to question and learn from the heads of the respective businesses they were interested in. The day also included the Leadership Camp which educated the participants on the qualities and precise steps to being a leader, where participants were then tasked with organising the Sunway Global Game Changer set for the next day. The event aimed at educating children on the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN. On Sunday morning, participants went through a gruesome workout with trainers from Train for Warrior. Later, it was time for the preparation and execution of the Game Changer. Overall, Sunway Summer Program 2017 tested the participants’ leadership while being educational and fun.
