ICON Okanagan is driven by a very simple concept; to find and present everything that is HOT in the Okanagan Valley in one exquisite publication. A concept that came to fruition based on the need for a true lifestyle magazine for the Okanagan, something that caters to a large demographic offering something for everyone. Created by Olaf Robrecht and Julian Snarski this magazine began as a collaborative effort; first asking ourselves what we wanted to see in a magazine and what would convince us to pick one up, then moving through our network of friends, family, business owners, and other associates in order to form a comprehensive understanding of what the community really wanted in an upscale lifestyle magazine. In this process ICON was born. Special Thanks! First off we would like to extend our sincerest thanks and audacious gratitude to Mr. Ivan Chew whose assistance and faith in the ICON project has been integral to the successful production of this magazine. One of the most memorable moments in the production of our flagship magazine was on site at Kelowna Flightcraft. With our crew of almost twenty we had a blast doing the photo shoot for X10sion 207. Our photographer Geoff Lang, at the helm of shoot, had the pleasure of working with six incredible models, the great people from X10sion, and our hair and makeup team from CREAM Salons Ltd. We would like to sincerely “apologize” for the “unwelcome” distraction to all those on site. It was a fun filled day marked with an outstanding final product. s we drive up the mountain toward Sparkling Hill Resort, we note how the resort is nestled into its natural surroundings.

We are truly dazzled by the entrance to Sparkling Hill-- a blue crystal atrium, which is what gives it the distinct appearance of a precious gemstone set into the mountain. Welcome to Sparkling Hill Resort, the most remarkable hotel and wellness centre in the Okanagan and indeed Canada, and the only place outside the Swarovski crystal showroom in Austria where the design and technology of Swarovski can be viewed and experienced first hand. Sparkling Hill Resort opened its doors to the public in May 2010. Located on 70 hectares of land (187 acres), the resort is a scenic 25 minute drive north of the Kelowna International Airport, and overlooks both the adjacent Predator Ridge Golf Course and Lake Okanagan with unparalleled views east to the Pinnacles and Monashee Mountains.

patriarch of the famed Austrian crystal family, a visionary himself, immediately liked the concept. And the vision became reality. It took less than two years from when the construction permit was issued, to the June 2010 opening ceremony of the 22,400m2 (240,000 sq.ft.) Sparkling Hill Resort. It’s estimated that 300-400 workers worked on the building site every day for two years, investing a total of more than 300,000 man-hours. In the end, more than 11,000m3 of concrete, 2,900 tons of steel and 135km of copper cable were used to turn a vision into reality.

The Vision

Hans-Peter Mayr, who worked in Austria at a wellness hotel but often vacationed in Western Canada, had a vision. During several visits to the Okanagan, he recognized the unique natural beauty of this valley and wanted to estab-

tained, giving the nervous and circulatory systems a boost. Through this maximum stimulation, a range of biochemical and hormonal processes are triggered. So did we try it? Yes we did. We were informed to keep moving, keep wiggling our fingers and toes, maybe even talk or sing to make the time go by more quickly. Three minutes never felt so long! We exited with a pleasant warm feeling throughout the whole body—a feeling of vitality and well-being; happy, strong, and full of energy. The Cold Sauna is used to assist with the recovery from conditions such as inflammation, arthritis, joint pain and fatigue. Sparkling Hill’s indoor pool has crystals embedded in the ceiling for a starry nightly effect,underwater music and lightning.

Soon to be one of the top wellness spas in North America, Sparkling Hill’s KurSpa spans over 40,000 square feet, offering a full range of over 100 treatments, including several types of massage, Fango mud wraps, 7 signature sauna and steam rooms each with different temperature ranges offering a variety of scents, textures and stimulants. We were looking forward to experiencing the signature treatment facility of the resort—the cold sauna. Popular in Europe, this special sauna involves spending up to three minutes in a room set at -110° C that is a “dry cold”, which makes is comfortable. Leading television manufacturers have taken this into consideration with their latest offerings bringing to market units capable of rendering these incredible visual effects.

Recession in mind, the price point becomes a serious point of contention. New technologies always come at a hefty premium for all us early adopters and that is a sad reality. Samsung being the first to hit stores has offered models ranging from 40-55 inches in the LED edge-lit LCD format starting at $2500.00 and topping out at meager $4000.00, plasma is offered in sizes up to 63 inches. Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp, Sony, and LG will all be competing for market share with comparable models at a similar price point.

As of this fall the consequences for impaired driving have become exponentially more severe. If a driver’s blood alcohol concentration reads 0.05 – 0.08 or is in the WARN range on the roadside screening device and it is their first offence, they will be subject to: an immediate 3-day driving ban, a $200 fine, a possible 3day vehicle impoundment ($150), and a $250 drivers license reinstatement fee. That’s right, and these are just the consequences for your first “warning,” up to $600 in fines and a heck of a time trying to get to work the next few days. Not only that, you may also be looking at criminal charges and legal fees. Meaning, you can either blow below 0.05 or if you’ve metabolized more ethanol, well then, you may blow a fail, and this HAS happened. What is an iPad?

The iPad is a tablet computer which has been developed for the consumption of media such as movies, books, magazines and music, as well as for general web and email access. The tablet weights around 700 grams and measures 24.3 x 19 x 1.3 cm (9.6x7.5x0.5”). With OS 3.2 and the new iOS4 it runs the same operating system as the Apple’s iPod Touch and iPhone, and is controlled by a multitouch 9.7” 1024x768 display sensitive to fingertip contact (unlike most previous tablet computers using a pressure-triggered stylus)…and it looks pretty cool ...

Since Apple’s new iPad officially hit stores in Canada it has been generating a buzz that many electronics manufacturers could only dream of. But, what is an iPad? What

The buyer can choose between a Wi-Fi and a 3G/Wi-Fi model, both available with either 16, 32, or 64 GB of internal storage capacity. If you plan on using your iPad mainly in your house, or in areas with Wi-Fi access, then the Wi-Fi-only model will be the right choice and the only decision you have left is how much storage you may need. If you require internet connection at all times, then the 3G version which requires an extra monthly contract through a wireless provider, is the way to go. Our model which was one of the first here in the Okanagan is the Wi-Fi 16GB base model ($549). The reason that we went for this model is the fact that we will most likely use it in Wi-Fi areas such as our offices or some of the great coffee shops in town (yes, we work there, too!!). Even if you take it along with you on your travels you will always find public areas or coffee shops with free Wi-Fi service. 16GB are more than enough for our music, books and photos. This being said we don’t suggest that a 3G connection for the iPad is unnecessary. Apple is marketing the touch-screen iPad as a computer for everyone, including people who have little technical know-how or don’t like the idea of having a laptop computer. The 3G connection is therefore a simple, no-fuss way to access the internet for such users.

What will it do for me?

A lot – if you want. And it’s fairly easy to use. If you own an iPod Touch or if you know what it is – the iPad is basically a bigger version of 20

If you are not familiar with it, don’t worry, this is arguably one of the best touch interface out there and it won’t take you long to navigate through the operating system. You can use the iPad for web browsing, storing your photos and videos, managing your contacts in its address book, or using one of the thousand and thousand of “apps” (applications) that you can get at the “App-Store”. There’s an app for anything it seems. Even if you don’t have an iPad yet – just go to apple.com or download iTunes to find out what is available (bring some time – there’s around 200,000 of them!) In general, the iPad is a great device, but it’s not a laptop or netbook killer, nor does it replace your computer. Yes, Apple market it as the computer for everyone...but funny enough, the first thing that happens when you turn the iPad on is that it is asking you to plug it in to a computer to initialize it...

We have to be able to pick up emails, search the internet or connect with people via Skype, Facebook or other services even when not in the office (so most likely at the coffee shop around the corner). We need to have access to our clients contact information and our schedule and have to be able to show our clients the latest layouts. And when on the road it’s nice to be able to play your favourite songs. What? We could do that with any regular laptop or netbook, too? Well, that’s true… but c’mon, the iPad is just such a cool gadget! We love it!

Also - it has no USB port or any other connection to exchange files, so you either have to email them yourself (but then again – you can’t save and organize them on the iPad) or sign up for a webbased service such as Memeo Connect (www.memeo.com) which enables you to upload and store any kind of file to your Google Docs account and have access to it. The iPad is amazing for social networking – it’s great for Twitter and Facebook, web browsing, organizing addresses and appointments, viewing photos and watching videos (as long as they are not Flash based as the iPad does not support Flash!), media consumption such as reading books, comics and magazines, listening to your music (although the built-in loudspeaker is fairly weak, so better use headphones) and playing games. The whole thing will also evolve with new apps and ideas, but in the end, it is just another tool. So...

Do I need one?

It depends. Let’s be real: most people currently don’t “need” an iPad in the way they do “need” a phone or a computer. The iPad is more of a very cool looking entertainment device with tons of downloadable appliNovember 2010

July 29, 2010 - a hot, sunny day in the Okanagan. Under a big white tent at the edge of the Painted Rock vineyard John Skinner, the proprietor of the winery, is deep in thought. His eyes wandering over the sloping vineyard and the beauty of Skaha Lake. What a year it has been for Painted Rock Estate Winery. Right out of the gate, their first vintage earned them the title of “Best New Winery”

at the 2009 Okanagan Fall Wine Festival, laudations came from respected reviewers across the country, and at the 2010 Okanagan Spring Wine Festival they won another award for “Best of Varietal – Merlot”. And now a vision which began seven years ago, based on faith in his team and the land, would receive it’s crowning achievement - the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excel“I haven’t seen a lence. In 2004, recognizing that the quality of wines in the Okanagan was improving dramatically and driven by both his passion for wine and his desire to create a legacy business for his family, he purchased the land in south Penticton known locally as “The Blackhawk.” It took over a year to contour the 60 acres, sitting high atop the shores of Skaha Lake and once home to the largest orchard in the British Commonweatlh, the Braeside Farms, for ease of farming and promotion of air movement. After even more research and good advice, John purchased two clones of each variety “to ensure a full suite of blending opportunities” would be available to his future winemaker. To ensure the best possible product you need the best talent, not just that, John wanted a team with just the right blend of craft, skill, and passion to make his vision a reality and to deliver the best wine. Barry Green earned his role as vineyard manager through his contributions while working at Painted Gavin Miller, winemaker, John Skinner, Proprietor, Her Honour Gwen Point and The Honourable Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of B.C

The name John selected for his winery, Painted Rock, originates from ancient native pictographs that have been painted in red on the rocks bordering the property. These “Red Icons” became the landmark of the property and the name of its signature Bordeaux blend. In 2004, following careful examination of the soil, site influences, general growing conditions and with advice from well-known local viticulturist Valerie Tait as well as input from other top regional and international wineries about the best clones and varieties available from Bordeaux, a planting strategy was devised. In 2005 Painted Rock planted blocks of the five classic Bordeaux grapes (Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mal-

Rock in the very early days, and Gavin Miller, whose aspirations for quality and teamwork were evident in his work at Poplar Grove, was hired as winemaker. Alain Sutre, of Ertus Consulting in Bordeaux, was engaged to integrate vineyard and winery objectives and to blend the wines. John’s whole family is involved, too. John’s wife Trish handles the back office of this fast growing enterprise with their Senior Sales And Marketing Coordinator Jill Penner; daughter Lauren is leaving to do an MBA in Bordeaux with a focus on luxury brand management, food, and wine; and son Riley is spending the summer working for the winery in Vancouver before he returns to UVIC to complete his degree this fall. Painted Rock Estate Winery 2007 Red Icon, 2007 Syrah, 2007 Merlot, and 2008 Chardonnay are still available for sale. The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, however, touted by Mr. Jukes as “a brilliant wine with pinpoint balance – totally and utterly delicious,” was snapped up quickly by top restaurants throughout British Columbia and is now sold out. The 8th annual ARS LONGA Exhibition & Sale took place on October 22nd-24th. ARS LONGA is a collective of Okanagan artists engaged in the act of creating art. A group of core artists, including Lynden Beesley, Judy Burns, Val Eibner, Kenna Graff and Angelika Jaeger, invite different guest artists each year to join them, providing a varied experience for clients and guests alike. This year the guest artists were David Montpetit, Bruce Taiji, Megan HallBernhard and Deborah Wilson. ICON Okanagan visited the opening reception where we had a chance to chat with the artists (over a glass of wine, of course) and to enjoy the live music by The Denton-Protsack Trio. Donations went to the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan.

ICON Okanagan joined the Terasen Gourmet & Grapes event hosted at Cabana Bar & Grille to enjoy a front row seat at the main event “IRON CHEF OKANAGAN.” Cabana’s own celebrity chef Ned Bell took on Wayne Martin from “Fraiche” in Vancouver. The entire battle was filmed, narrated, and broadcast, throughout the restaurant. Six gourmet food stations and six wine tasting stations run by the Valleys most prominent chefs and winemakers offered a delightful selection to say the least. We had a blast mingling with everyone as they enjoyed the evening! Check out the shots!

Black Cloud Wine 2007 Altostratus Pinot Noir One of the newer varietal-specific wineries to emerge in the Okanagan is a small label by the name of Black Cloud Wine. Started by wine maker and consultant Bradley Cooper and his wife Audra-Lee, Black Cloud focuses on Pinot Noir – and only Pinot Noir. The inaugural ’06 vintage was released last year. Recently, the ‘08 Altostratus saw its debut, a much more refined and elegant example than its predecessor. The Altostratus has an unmistakable unique quality which transcends the anticipated stone and strawberries: this is big, with body – and it’s smooth like silk. Raspberry and earthy tones meet candy-floss and mustard with a touch of wood. There’s a ton of things going on in the glass, and it’s all good stuff. Don’t put this one down to rest – it’s one you’ll want to drink now, and drink often. Unlike many of its newer Okanangan winery companions, this bottle unexpectedly over-delivers for the price. Wine maker Bradley advises that this pinot noir can hold its own against wild coho salmon or Saltspring Island lamb, and he invites drinkers to share their own pairings. 2009 Tinhorn Creek Oldfield 2Bench This is wine maker Sandra Oldfield’s inaugural vintage of the 2Bench Red blend – comprised of the three big reds in Tinhorn’s lineup. It’s 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc, each selected at the time of harvest from the best of the best. This bold beauty spends 18 months in French oak before it’s carefully bottled; then, it’s allowed to rest another 6 months before release to the public. What I like about this is the time Sandra and her team takes with it; yes, the bottle is still a little loud on the taste buds, but it’s got a heck of a backbone to help it go the distance in your cellar. It’s meant to. Wine maker notes on this one include plum, tobacco and cassis. I got that. But what she hasn’t told you about is the dark, inky hue of the wine – colour that steals the light from your glass and leaves you thinking of rubies. And the notes don’t mention the smoky, leather quality that’s teased by a touch of vanilla and butter-rum Lifesavers. Tinhorn’s ’07 2Bench Red is a keeper and a sleeper. Tuck it away for a few years, but not by itself; you’ll want more than one. Retail: $29.99 Availability: Winery or online, limited production 28

2009 La Frenz Vintage Port Style This is a winery that generally makes damn fine wine, whatever the style or varietal. The cool thing about La Frenz is the unusual offerings they produce: like their smoky delicious Tempranillo, the remarkably fresh Alexandria or their Muscat Liqueur – made in the solera process of aging as it goes, so every vintage has some of the original 1999 production. There’s something unique about the 2009 Vintage Port Style, even among these varied offerings. Wine maker Jeff Martin pays homage to Australia wine making in this one, using the traditional Australian method of aging the vintage port in the bottle rather than in older barrels. And he includes a little custom distilled brandy spirits to fortify the ripe syrah grapes (made in the Shiraz style). Ultimately, the product is one smooth customer; nothing less is to be expected from the Martins. The 2009 Vintage Port Style is a heavy hitter, coming in at 18.2% alcohol by volume, but you’d never know it. Dark, rich preserved fruit meets woodsy leathers and tobacco and flint, all smoothly intersecting at yummy. To be enjoyed now or cellared for up to 20 years. At the price, it’s easy to buy several bottles and test such a statement. I’m doing just that. Retail: $25 Availability: Through the winery

2007 Gray Monk Odyssey White Brut Bubble is special – in the way it’s made, presented and celebrated. Although it is one of those wines that’s had ‘special occasion’ trumpeted all around it, there’s no reason we can’t drink bubble whenever we’d like to. I like to drink it on the occasional Tuesday night, for no reason other than it’s the day after Monday. The folks at Gray Monk know how to make bubble. Their 2007 Odyssey White Brut is a blend of Riesling and Chardonnay, made in the Traditional Method of leaving the product on yeast for 16 months before the rest of the bubble magic happens. Part of that magic is a typically beautiful yeasty aroma. Think rising bread. This is a great combination of crisp, acidic citrus and apple flavours with a creamy, smooth finish. It’s the best of both worlds, and it’s destined to get better with a little time. Right now it’s like freshly picked apples on a clear Okanagan fall day – in a few years expect some acidity to fade, allowing a delicate creamy softness to unfold. One of his latest ventures is the award-winning Crystal Head Vodka. Aykroyd, who considers himself a Spiritualist, is interested in various aspects of the paranormal, ghosts, spirits, and other un-worldly presences, has done extensive research regarding mediums and psychics. With “Crystal Head Vodka” and its unique skull-shaped bottle he has combined two of his passions. ICON Okanagan: Dan, in just a short period of time Crystal Head Vodka became so popular you were actually unable to keep up with demand and even had to limit sales to 1 bottle per consumer. Congratulations on this success. How much of this do you attribute to the unique design of the bottle? Dan Aykroyd: The bottle is definitely part of it. It is actually an accurate glass rendering of a human skull designed by a friend, renowned American landscape painter and portrait artist John Alexander. It took more than 2 years to develop with one of the leading glass manufacturers in Europe, Bruni Glass. The concept for Avenue bar stems from a group of individuals led by Tyler Tronnes, all sharing a similar aspiration; to open an establishment that offers an experience that they felt was sorely missing in downtown Kelowna. The establishment’s name was taken directly from the dictionary and stands for; a way of approach or progression towards something. Avenue is a simple bar with a genuine concept; Character. A throwback to the good old days of sharing ideas and thoughtful conversation over a cold drink at a great value, the experience in this classic bar starts with a smile and a handshake. Not a drop is spilled, not a motion is wasted as he quickly rings in the order and returns the change into the patron’s hands with a grin. He loves what he does and it shows as guests are lined up along the bar competing for his attention so that he can make their

next drink. Avenue is NOT a revolutionary take on the bar establishment. Selling booze like everyone else, they offer timely, friendly service like all great establishments but the difference is all in poise and character. Long hours and patience and dedication have taken the place of huge startup capital. Ingenuity has been the team’s greatest resource, and with a staff consisting of many lifelong friends, all share a longing for a successful place to truly call their own. The Secret to a Real Italian Coffee ICON Okanagan spends a night at Bliss Bakery

O

Oh Sleepy Peachland. Hey, no offence - it is 2am! I’m on my way to work. No kidding! Boy, what was I thinking when I agreed to this editorial? It started with a great idea – a peak into businesses in the Okanagan, a couple of hours of hands-on training to provide some insight. We were sitting in a coffee shop (as usual...) when we discussed this and we quickly decided a bakery was perfect for ICON’s first issue. Cool - coffee, muffins, cakes, sandwiches – perfect. At least that’s what I thought. Little did I know I would have to show up in the earlier than the earliest morning hours for my hands-on experience. Anyway – here I am, right on Beach Avenue, in front of Bliss Bakery. Darci and Barry Yeo opened Owner Darci Yeo preparing one of Bliss’ the doors of signature gourmet coffees their beautiful establishment in 2005 selecting the then brand new gateway building on the shores of Okanagan Lake. Tired of their stereotypical life in Vancouver and their jobs in the technology sector, the couple had decided to make

one of their favourite vacation destinations their new home and the birthplace of a new business venture. Sharing a passion for great food, the couple decided to open

a bakery. Not a franchise, no mass produced, homogenized food, but a unique and fresh alternative crafted from scratch by hand using traditional slow food principles. “We only use the finest ingredients,” Barry tells

me while preparing the dough for one of their artisan breads, “you won’t find any chemicals, preservatives

or hydrogenated oils. Real butter whole eggs, natural vanilla, no shortcuts allowed”. No doubt – you can definitely taste the difference. More than 30 varieties of bread are on the list, although not all of them are baked each day. Add pastries, tarts and cupcakes, all hand-made with no mixes or shortcuts. It is fascinating to watch Barry work. He is very organized, prepares the dough, mixes ingredients, keeps an eye on several industrial ovens and even finds the time to chat about his life and explain every single step to me. While I was there not only did I see the production of numerous loafs of bread, cinnamon buns (my favorite part of that night), muffins and a variety of croissants, I also got a step by step instruction by baker Kyla on how to make lemon meringue tarts. Fascinating, to say the least. The bakery opens at 7.30am, 7 days a week, and just minutes later the first early birds arrive to get their organic coffee, roasted specifically for Bliss, along with some pastry or one of the freshly prepared gourmet sandwiches. “We can tell you everything on or about our sandwiches,” Darci explains, “because we make

every bit of it.” They roast their beef and pork, along with their chicken and turkey, slice all their own cheeses, and even wash and slice the vegetables. Nothing at Bliss Bakery comes prewashed or prepared. “How could we insult our bread that way?” Barry laughs. Well, this was definitely an interesting and enlightening morning. Make sure you stop by next time you drive

Ingredients (serves 4-6) 2 tsp olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 butternut squash, peeled and chopped into 1 inch cubes 2 apples, peeled, cored and chopped 2 tbsp curry powder 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth salt and pepper plain yogurt for garnish

Curried Squash, Apple and Onion Soup What’s more comforting than blending Okanagan squash, apples and carmelized onions into a velvety soup? Weekend elegant or weekday casual – just add a crunchy green salad, some wonderful bread and your favorite winter wine!

Method In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat, add onions and stir about 10 mins until golden brown. Add squash and apples, cook for 5 mins, stirring well. Add curry and raise heat to high, add broth, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer, covered, about 20 mins or until squash is fork tender. Let cool slightly and blend, using an immersion blender, until smooth. Place in serving bowls and top with yogurt or your favorite garnish. (soup can be made a day or two ahead of time and refrigerated, or frozen for up to 3 months).

Icon at the table Ingredients 4 tart apples, peeled and diced 4 celery sticks, thinly sliced 1 cup seedless grapes, halved 1 cup walnuts, toasted then chopped baby spinach leaves (optional)

Okanagan Waldorf Salad Dressing 1 cup plain yogurt 2 tbs fresh lemon juice 1 tsp lemon zest salt and pepper

Method So simple, crunchy and classic! Just toss the salad in dressing and serve alone or on beds of spinach. That’s it!

Apple Cake with Butterscotch Glaze This cake is a never-fail showstopper! Beautiful to look at and wonderful the next morning with coffee ... Method In a large bowl combine flour, spice and soda. In a separate bowl, combine eggs, oil, sugars, and vanilla. Stir wet ingrediants into dry ingrediants until just combined. Fold in apples and nuts – don’t worry, this will be a very thick batter. Spoon into a greased Bundt pan and bake at 350° F (175° C) 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into middle comes out clean. Cool in pan and unmold onto plate. To make the glaze ... melt butter and sugar over medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves (about 5 mins). Add the cream, stirring, and bring to a boil. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Cool slightly and glaze cooled cake in stages. Serve with whipped cream if desired, but it’s great on its own.

A beautiful and sunny day. Driving along the shores of the lake, through orchards, and vineyards...the scent of fruits and trees in the air. artwork that graces its walls. Excited by this simple yet powerful introduction to the home, we peer out of the room to our left at the grand hallway that we are about to enter. Immediately we are overcome by the towering ceilings, the hall, dominated by alcoves that house an array of chests adorned with vases and artwork is appointed with several colossal chandeliers that beg you to continue your journey through the residence.

Entering into the first guest suite we are met with a

tempting bed shrouded in the in the softest linens imaginable, by its sheer appearance any visitor would be blessed to enjoy an evening in this room. The adjoining en suite almost insists use as its soothing ambiance would lure the most reluctant of the room’s occupants. Eager to move on we are again met with the incredible great hall as we move towards the next suite. Ahead we find an enormous luxurious bed fit for royalty. The room offers an incredible en suite and walk in closet space. A paradise for visitors seeking a relaxing escape. As we move on we are shocked by how little we have

seen, and enticed by what is to come. As we turn the corner an incredible round sofa sits in the center of the room, soft and inviting, and facing a massive fireplace. This space implores those who approach to nestle in with a flute of Bordeaux and contemplate while they are surrounded by the beauty of Lake Okanagan as it peers in through the windows that encircle its occupants. Only then do we come to realize the modernity of the next area, spanning between the last oasis and the kitchen area lays the media room. Nestled between the dinNovember 2010

ing room and the great room, the massive flat screen television and welcoming couches beg everyone to join in the entertainment. State of the art audio and video equipment overcome those who desire it without isolating them from the rest of the home as traditional media rooms often do. One can enjoy the scents of a meal being prepared while they check out the game or a film. From the media room we are led to the dining room. Here and incredible fir table that brings to mind the feasting area of a medieval castle dominates the room. Surrounded by many stunning comfortable chairs this table is capable of hosting a feast fit for a king, while everyone enjoys a soothing view of the pool and outside entertaining areas with the lake and mountains in the distance. The kitchen, fit for a Michelin star awarded master chef can cater to a crowd of hundreds. With its massive retro styled red stove and incredible state of the art appliances one can imagine an entire restaurant staff scurrying between the main kitchen and its adjoining butler’s kitchen or walk in freezer to prepare a meal for the most discerning guests. Catching our eyes beyond the doors that open from the kitchen to the exterior is a massive crater like aberration. Eager, we move through the doors to find an incredibly appointed outdoor kitchen area, complete with a gorgeous built in grill and prep area with an adjoining dining area. Commanding our attention however is the pool. Designed with an incredibly natural feel, this area seems to turn back time and brings us to a volcanic hot spring shrouded with modern sun beds and an outdoor media space that rivals the best indoor entertainment areas. A large television with surround sound and comfortable seating for many allows an incredible outdoor movie experience for those warm summer evenings. Completely blown away we move on towards the master suite. Here we find the largest most luscious and welcoming bed we have ever seen in our lives. Before it, dominating the room is a massive stone fireplace that one can only imagine imparts a sensual atmosphere to a romantic evening. Beyond this chamber surrounded by incredible views of the bordering vineyards and lake sits a beautiful soaker tub, here, unwinding becomes an entirely different experience. Beyond the bath however stand two incredible showers appointed with the most modern soaking technologies ensuring that not one 44

part of the body goes unmassaged, washed, rubbed, or soaked. If that wasn’t enough, just passed the showers lays the most exquisite, enormous master walk in closet known to man. Here we have drawers and cupboards dedicated for every single type of clothing and apparel that exists. We were surprised to discover that there was still more to this veritable palace of a home. We were now being led to the “dog house.” To get there we were escorted through the “laundry room” of the villa, a space which

was reminiscent of a luxury parlour rather than a place where dirty attire is to be amassed. This extravagant space marked the entrance to the “dog house” a staircase leading up to a man’s oasis. Here we were met with a beautiful pool table, entertaining area, as well as another guest suite. We could have retired here for a game of pool and a drink but there was still more to see. As we descended the stairs we became extremely curious what lay ahead. At the base of the stairs and to the left stood one final door, as we were led through it we realized

this was the “garage.” A fully finished area capable of housing several vehicles as well as motorcycles, the garage was appointed with and incredible workspace capable of housing even a professional mechanics equipment. And so, exhilarated, our tour had come to an end. We could not help but admire the secluded private atmosphere that San Marc’s Tuscan Villa offered. Walking away in awe of the structures alluring presence, highlighted by its exterior lighting, I could not help but imagine pulling in with my Ferrari 458 throwing the keys on the counter and hopping into bed before a magnificent fire...hey...we can all dream right?

I would say that I am seeing it clean up a lot. Less and less embellishments, dressier footwear, button down long sleeve shirts and dark denim that’s a little tighter. The Story of X10sion 207 Over 16 years ago Rod Reinbold and his wife Lori saw an opportunity to assist the ailing retail environment in the downtown core of Kelowna. They started with swim and fitness apparel. Both swim and fitness were an important part of their lives as well as being part of the fashion world. From there they grew. The space next door to their little surf/fitness shop became available so they moved on it. Soon they began selling affordable denim and popular brand names catering to the 14 to 35 year old demographic. Rod and his wife began to realize that they were competing with too many similar retailers, they needed an angle. At that time another space became available beside them so they knocked out a wall and started what is today, Kelowna’s Premium Brand Name Denim Boutique. X10sion 207. The name comes from when they first expanded, it was an extension of their swim store and the address was 207, so they changed it up a bit X10sion 207 was born. Rod: “We currently have 3 stores in Kelowna, X10sion 207 Clothing Company, Surf Culture Clothing (formerly Original Beach & Body Company) and X10sion 207 Premium Outlet. We cover almost every price point on quality merchandise. The merchandise is all up to date with shopping streets around North America, such as Robson in Vancouver, Robertson in LA, Las Vegas Boulevard in Vegas, to St. Catherines in Montreal and your favourite shopping street wherever you travel. Now, the reason behind this is to accommodate Kelowna’s #1 industry, Tourism! My philosophy is as follows, and I don’t mean to offend anyone, I use all of them myself in one way or the other. Boutique shoppers, people that want to dress in a unique way. They definitely want to stand out from the crowd and be noticed, they wear their statement. When I go buying I have to keep in mind who my customer really is and where I am. We probably hit 6-7 trade shows a year while travelling to view lines all around, it sounds glamorous and is but it is also a lot of work. Whatever your fashion, remember, “do what you love and live what you do!!” 54

THE OKANAGAN-THOMPSON INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE SYMPOSIUM OF 2002 THE IDEA Twelve years ago international sculptor Jock Hildebrand worked as ‘artist in residence’ at the Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver and viewed their legacy of sculptures from the Vancouver International Sculpture Symposium of 1975. As a result he became interested in the concept of symposiums as a means to creating public art. With a life-long passion for art, Hildebrand had studied sculpture at the Emily Carr School of Art and Design in Vancouver, and his original intention was to pursue the idea of another symposium with the Van Dusen Gardens. sided for many years. The idea of a symposium came back to the valley with him, and so began a mega-event in the making. Sculpture symposiums are intended to give artists as much freedom as possible to work with materials they may otherwise have limited access to, explore working in a different cultural context and learn from each other. In addition, the public benefits by being able to take part in and observe the creative process and municipalities are able to acquire public art for their citizens to enjoy.

THE PROJECT Upon his return to the Okanagan, Hildebrand set up his studio and gallery in a historic apple packing plant 56

multi-venue event, including participant selection, funding, marketing, materials, site selections and community involvement. Through monetary commitments from all three levels of government and sponsorships from major contributors, enough money was available to solicit proposals from top international sculptors. A committee of 7 adjudicators, including professors from various universities as far away as New York and the head of the Chicago Public Arts Committee, narrowed the finalists of commissioned artists down from a call that solicited over 90 proposals from 26 different countries. in Westbank, built a foundry on his family property, and became active as president of what was then the Kelowna and District Arts Council (KADAC). The concept of an Okanagan-Thompson wide symposium soon prompted the creation of a not-for-profit society entitled the Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium Society (OTISS). The organization worked for over three years on the logistics of this

Opening and closing ceremonies, again open to the public, framed this cultural event. The Vibrant Art of Robyn Lake & Ken Gillespie

The Okanagan Valley is a paradise for artists. Only here you find breathtaking sceneries including Canada’s only desert, numerous vineyards and the most beautiful panoramic views. Many artists come here to visit, and once they see the beauty of it, the spectacular light and open skies, it often captures their heart and they decide to stay.

Robyn Lake and Ken Gillespie both fell in love with the Okanagan and call it their home for many years now. The energetic couple shares a very similar palette and had many solo and group exhibitions throughout the valley. Their vibrant Okanagan landscapes are always a favorite with gallery and art show visitors and are in collections around the globe, bringing the beauty of our area to the world. ICON Okanagan met Robyn Lake and Ken Gillespie at their studio in Peachland. ICON Okanagan: Robyn, you are originally from Australia and came to Canada in 1976. It was here that you studied Fine Arts. What made you to come to Canada to pursue a career in art? Robyn: Oh, no, it was actually not the art that brought me to Canada. I originally came here after meeting some Canadians when I was travelling around New Zealand,

and never went back home ;-) My interest in art began in the late 1980’s when I took a watercolour class and I started painting full time in 2001.

Robyn Lake Robyn Lake was born in Cairns, Australia and came to Canada in 1976. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria and studied the Fine Arts Programme at Frasier Valley University College in Abbotsford, B.C. Robyn’s vibrant oil and acrylic paintings have been in numerous solo and group exhibitions and are in collections around the globe. She has lived in the Okanagan since 1991.

ICON Okanagan: So when did the two of you meet then? Robyn: That was a little bit later, 9 years ago at an art gallery opening in Penticton, through mutual artist friends. We married 4 years ago.

ICON Okanagan: The Okanagan is a very special place and we have a lively art community here. What made you to come and stay? Robyn: That’s easy: The hot summers, the close vicinity of outdoor recreation and the easy accesibility to fly to and from. Ken: I had been coming to the Okanagan since I was a small child, my uncle owned the November 2010

Ken Gillespie Ken was born in Vancouver in 1948 and spent most of his life in Calgary until moving to the Okanagan in 2000. He has been a full time professional artist for many years and is a senior signature member (S.F.C.A) of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Ken has done many solo shows (including sell-outs) in top Canadian Galleries. His works are collected world wide in private and public collections. Ken’s artwork has been in several Publications including ‘International Artists’ magazine in their ‘Master Painters of the World’ section. Sunny Beach Motel on Skaha Lake in the 50’s and we spent a lot of our summers there. The Okanagan was also where we came to holiday with my daughters. In 2000 after living in Calgary for 40 years I needed a change and this seemed like the logical place, and as it turned out a very good choice. ICON Okanagan: No doubt, eh?! Ken, you actually left a successful career in the geophysical sector to pursue your interest in art. Quite a step and a lot of people would say very risky ... ? Ken: When I left, I was president of a good sized seismic data processing firm. It was one of those years where the oil business was tanking, and we had just done a substantial corporate downsizing. I would have to say it did shock a few people when I added my name to the cut list. My friend Hugh Stanfield who owned the company at the time still talks about his disbelief when I dropped that one on him.

At the time I had been painting for a few years and never sold a single piece, but I had a feeling in my gut that I could do it. Oddly enough I never questioned the decision when “Greata Vines”, 36 x 60 inches, acrylic I did it or since, I was ready for a change and painting was what called to me. That was 18 years ago and so far so good. ICON Okanagan: Amazing. And why landscapes? Ken: The Canadian landscape is the one I know most intimately and I love to paint it. I still do a lot of Alberta scenes as well as the Mountain Parks where I spent a lot of years hiking and backpacking. These days I am doing more and more Okanagan scenes, the landscape here is very diverse

and interesting. In a couple of hours you can go from lush lake country to mountains, vineyards and desert. Having said that, right now I’m thinking about getting into the material I have from the time I spent trekking in the Himalayas in Nepal. ICON Okanagan: The Okanagan has a population of more than 350,000 and has become a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. So do you sell most of your artwork local, here in the Valley? Robyn: For me, the Okanagan has definitely been my bread and butter, although most of the people who buy my work here are from somewhere else. Ken: The bulk of my work is sold outside of the Okanagan. I had established my career across Western Canada before I moved here and still make most of my sales in Calgary. However the Okanagan market for me is one that is growing very well, especially as I do more local material. “Blasted Church”, 24 x 48 inches, acrylic

ICON Okanagan: Could you feel the impact of the recent economic crisis? Robyn: Definitely over the quieter months, but less so over the summer. Ken: Yes, in this business you are always vulnerable to market

forces and cycles, you have to prepare and react when they happen. ICON Okanagan: Do you paint from memory, or do you use photographic reference, or do you actually paint on location? Robyn: All of the above – I prefer to paint on location or from life in the studio. We both use photographs as reference. Ken: I use all of the above mentioned means of reference. I have always been a bit more of a studio painter. If I do use a photographic reference I tend to highly alter it, and a good portion of my landscapes come totally out of my head. ICON Okanagan: It is very interesting that you share a very similar palette. Do you actually share a studio and has there ever been a collaboration? Robyn: We paint 6 feet apart in the studio, Ken on the right, me 68

on the left, which works out well because I’m left-handed and Ken is right. I’m an early morning painter and will be alone in the studio for hours before Ken comes in. He’s a night owl and will often paint late at night when I’ve put my brushes away. When we are in there together, we go off into our own world and rarely talk. Sometimes we paint in silence, other times we play anything from jazz to rock. Yes, we have done one collaboration so far. I still have the painting. My very first outdoor landscape, I painted my daughter on the beach and Ken did the background - mountains across the lake, ICON Okanagan: The Okanagan is a vibrant and artistic community. We have several galleries, art exhibitions and art projects here. How does it compare to other communities where you have lived? Ken: When you look at the Valley as a whole, it has most of what is in the bigger cities, although on a smaller scale. However, there is probably a higher per capita number of good artist’s living here, because when you do what we do, you can work where you like regardless of where you do business. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to live here. I would say from the standpoint of people having an interest in doing art, it is the same here or more than in the larger centers. As far as people being interested in buying original art, that is another story. I don’t think the buying demographic is as strong here, although that may be slowly changing. ICON Okanagan: Thank you very much for taking the time for this interview. All the best!
