PUBLISHER’S LETTER Goodbye, Summer ...

we literally haven’t seen a lof of you this year. With numerous fires burning in the valley, the surrounding areas and in the Western United States, the Okanagan once again endured another summer blanketed in smoke. The air quality at times was so bad, it led to an air quality index of 10 plus with 10 being the worst it can be. Several events got cancelled and tourists were re-thinking their plans. Visibility issues even caused some flight cancellations at the aiports. It was only towards the end of August when smoke conditions finally eased, but businesses stretching from Kamloops to Osoyoos reported lower numbers of visitors and said tourists were expressing concerns about the fires and smoke. According to Tourism Kelowna, plans to roll-out a strong fall advertising campaign were already underway, trying to strengthen Kelowna’s four-season destination appeal. And as part of the media, we will try our best to promote the beauty of the Okanagan Valley. In all seasons. Here’s to a strong Fall and Winter season!

Olaf Robrecht

Let’s have a quick look at what we have prepared for you in this edition. The Okanagan Technology Sector is growing at records speeds and has a huge impact on our economy in the valley. Kelowna is becoming a Canadian hub for the high-tech industry and Accelerate Okanagan is a leading business accelerator for tech companies in the startup or growing phases. We sat down with Raghwa Gopal, their Chief Executive Officer, to have a look at what we can expect for the future. We also looked into the best apps and found some pretty cool gadgets for you. But don’t worry there is a lot more for our not so tech-interested readers, including fashion, home decor, food .. and a pretty cool automotive special.

BUILDING INNOVATION

RAGHWA GOPAL - THE OKANAGAN’S TECH PIONEER

S

Photographer – Alisha Khan

uccess has taken Accelerate Okanagan boss Raghwa Gopal to 70 countries around the world. When he sold his business in 2001, he could have retired to his native Fiji and sipped mai-tais on the beach for the rest of his life. But the 60-year-old computer engineer and entrepreneur admits that’s not his style. Besides, he said, why would anyone want to leave Kelowna?

“I’ve seen every continent except Antarctica,” said Gopal, Accelerate’s chief executive officer. “I’ve seen a lot of great places — amazing places — I’m telling you. But when I come back home, I say, ‘this

Writer – David Trifunov

is paradise.’” As CEO, Gopal has helped orchestrate Accelerate Okanagan’s growth into one of Canada’s most talked-about tech sectors. As of 2015, the industry employed more than 7,600 people and made an economic impact of $1.3 billion in the valley. Tech has brought in a much-sought after youth movement to the Okanagan, one of Canada’s most “senior” regions. Gopal said an estimated 52 per cent of Okanagan’s 7,600 “tech” workers are 35 or younger. While Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan once watched as two-thirds of its graduates left Kelowna, that figure has flipped, he said. Gopal said now two-thirds of graduates are staying here, lured by more affordable housing (compared to Vancouver), a balanced lifestyle and increasing job options. The Central Okanagan’s high-tech industry is amid a sustained growth stage “beyond the startline,” said Gopal. While five years ago everyone looked to Club Penguin as the industry standard, the Okanagan now has two dozen companies on the verge of that storied level. “There are between 15 and 25 companies like that, that nobody talks about,” he said. “If you take 20 companies at even 50 employees each, that’s a thousand employees, which is a great place to be.” He points to successes such as BananaTag, an email tracking firm that’s grown from two employees to 65 with a second office in Vancouver. Strawhouse Labs, a media capital agency, was ranked No. 1 on Canada’s 2017 Startup list. Data Nerds, Canscribe Career College and Curatio can boast equally impressive accolades. Gopal said he envisions Yeti Farm Creative as

Kelowna’s next superstar. The computer animation firm has 75 animators on staff, recently inked a deal with California company Surprise Bag and could hire as many as 200 more people in the next three years. “Here there are some very genuine

companies that are growing, that started here and continue to grow and are becoming pretty significant.” Accelerate Okanagan takes pride in its role helping these firms advance, and Gopal said it’s companies that Fall 2018

have survived the startup phase where it can help most. When a company matures from a dozen employees to about 50, it needs to get serious about its approach. Accelerate Okanagan can assign one of its nine Entrepreneurs www.iconokanagan.com

in Residence to work with a member company’s CEO or leadership team to ensure it grows in the right fashion. Gopal himself said he enjoys using his nearly 40 years of experience to help companies make good decisions. For companies in this stage, it’s less about technology and more about good business. You can’t just visit everyone’s desk to ensure they’re happy or productive anymore, Gopal said. “The tech part comes in at the early stage when they’re building,” said Gopal. “But once they’ve built something, it’s not about tech anymore. Now it’s about how do they grow the business.” Success is building success, but the Okanagan is still about five years away from remarkable change, he said. The way Gopal describes it, you could think of Kelowna’s tech sector

as a conveyor belt in a factory. Good companies are getting propelled along, but the key is to replace them with 25 more. It’s an assembly line, and Accelerate Okanagan is here to ensure nothing jams the machinery. “We’re not at a point where it’s sustainable yet,” he said. “My guess is, at the rate we’re going, we’ll definitely be there in the next five years, for sure. We still need to attract companies from outside. We still need to attract a lot of talent from outside. We need to continually feed that.” Gopal said he plans to keep his front-row seat on the action. He tried retirement once, and it didn’t work. With his son and daughter just beginning their careers, he doesn’t have any grandchildren to spoil, either.

Kelowna. While people were impressed by Kelowna, there were few other opportunities in the valley. It made Gopal realize growing the valley would help not only his business interests, but the region as a whole. “I made up my mind at the time that I’m going to get out into the community and I’m going to build a tech community. Having that ecosystem will help every other company and every other individual.” And, remember, there’s no place he’d rather be. “For a small community like this, we have the best of a lot of things.”

Besides, he’s still working on a passion project that started when he arrived in Canada 40 years ago. When he was helping Vadim Software — his first job — in the late 1970s, it was difficult to attract talent to

THE INNOVATION CENTRE Building innovation through community The Innovation Centre is different from your usual office building. There are over fifty companies working in the Innovation Centre; everything from two-person start-ups to large *innovative* firms. The building came out of a desire to support the emerging technology sector in the Okanagan, *though now the focus is* that “tech” is not an isolated sector, but that technology is embedded in every sector in Canada; from marketing, to agriculture, to advanced manufacturing. The variety of companies in the building represents *the* variety of industries. What they have in common is that they are all using technology to find creative solutions to problems. The building is also home to many support services for those innovative companies. There are restaurants, a coffee shop, and a juicery to keep everyone fueled, a law firm that hosts free office hours for start-ups, a yoga studio, and a number of banks and credit unions providing funding opportunities. This is one thing that makes the Innovation Centre a great home to their companies. The next time you’re downtown, pop over to the Innovation Centre, located on the corner of Ellis & Doyle; enjoy a coffee, take in the architecture, ask for a tour, and enjoy the buzz of a community of creative and innovative minds at work.

ARTS IN THE ATRIUM PERFORMANCE SERIES Join the Innovation Centre team in their atrium every other Wednesday for lunchtime performances. ARTS ON THE WALL Every month They also feature a different Okanagan Artist on the walls of the atrium every month.

Born in Kelowna: The ‘Hi Jane’ App Riffing off the high you get from smoking pot and one of the nicknames for marijuana, Kelowna-based Get in the Loop is introducing an app called Hi Jane. “We’re using the same philosophy and technology we use with our Get in the Loop app for Hi Jane,” said Loop CEO Matt Crowell. Get in the Loop is the free app that distributes electronic coupons for everything from restaurants, hotels and activities to wine, spas, salons and attractions. With recreational use of marijuana by adults becoming legal on Oct. 17, Crowell saw an opportunity to link dispensaries and consumers via app. Hi Jane will provide education, list dispensaries by location and offer deals on accessories, and experiences. “Dispensaries can’t discount marijuana, but they can offer deals on papers, bongs and accessories and offer Hi Jane members exclusive experiences like product tastings,” said Crowell. He also sees an opportunity for Get in the Loop and Hi Jane overlap. After buying joints at a dispensary, you might get offers for food from Get in the Loop pop up on your Hi Jane app for when the munchies inevitably hit. Or offers for massage or chiropractic services for those buying pot for pain relief. Crowell isn’t sure yet if Hi Jane will be launched nationwide after pot becomes legal or if it will roll out market by market. Get in the Loop is currently in 50 cities across Canada and is being franchised with the help of adviser Cliff Shillington, previously of ReMax Real Estate. Hi Jane will likely make it to all of the 50 cities Get in the Loop is in, and franchising could be in its future too.

A HECK A LOT OF BRAIN POWER by Steve MacNaull

Minister of International Trade Diversification Jim Carr was blown away by the Okanagan’s smarts during a recent stop in Kelowna. “There is are a lot of intellecutual capacity here,” he said after a meeting with high-tech company CEOs The meeting was held in the boardroom of Bananatag on the fifth floor. The firm is a prime example of a relatively unknown high-tech company in Kelowna doing cutting-edge work, hiring more and more people and exporting. “We develop and sell software that allows companies and individuals around the world to manage and measure their emails,” said Bananatag sales manager Melissa Gordon. Mostly, Bananatag’s software is used internally for businesses to guage, for instance, if employees are opening up the newsletter and how much time they’re spending with it. The software can also be used for email tracking by

challenges. KF has trouble hiring enough staff to keep up.

Earlier in the day, the MP for Winnipeg South Centre toured KF Aerospace (formerly Kelowna Flightcraft).

“KF is already doing all the things we recommend to exporters,” said Carr. “They anticipate change and are adaptable. They retain the people they have; retrain so people can move from one industry to another; work with high schools and colleges to interest students in their industry; and utilize the foreign worker program and express program for highly skilled immigrants.”

“I watched workers put a new door on a 737-400 (jet),” he said. “KF does work for clients worldwide and there’s the potential to grow the business even more.” KF maintains and retrofits aircraft for an international array of airlines, goverments and military, flies cargo and trains pilots. that MOVIE really SPOKE to me! Christine Schreyer - Making make-believe more believable BY DAVID TRIFUNOV

Christine Schreyer’s office is actually a portal between Papua New Guinea and the mythical world of Krypton, Superman’s ancestral home.

wanted everything to look good, but to keep in mind historical accuracy (as best we know), so they contacted Schreyer to help with the language.

As an associate professor of Cultural Anthropology at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, Schreyer’s focus is languages, be they real or “constructed.” For example, she helped the Kala people of Papua New Guinea protect an endangered language by establishing an alphabet and dictionary.

We know nothing of languages spoken 20,000 years ago, so Schreyer had to piece together “Cro-Magnon” using what little evidence we have of prehistoric communication. It was a new way of creating a conlang for Schreyer.

She does similar work with First Nations in Canada. She also invents dialogue for Hollywood blockbusters, be it alien or ancient (or both); those languages are called conlangs, or constructed languages. They are two sides of the same coin for Schreyer. “I actually see them as really interconnected,” Schreyer said. “Conlangs can be a model for language revitalization.” The work that gets more media attention is when she’s connected to a movie script. She got her first Hollywood job after studying how fans of the movie Avatar latched onto and began learning the film’s conlang, Na’vi. “My work has looked at how fan communities, such as Na’vi speakers, can be models for communities attempting to revitalize their Indigenous languages,” she said. “How do community members contribute? How do they make the community welcoming? How do they make learning ‘cool?’” Producers of the 2013 Superman reboot, Man of Steel, read about her work with Na’vi and contacted her to help create Kryptonian. She toured the set, met other crew members, and helped with the film’s viral marketing campaigns. After that it was Power Rangers and, most recently, Alpha (which just hit theatre screens). Her work with Alpha is the most in-depth. All the dialogue in the film is spoken using a conlang (the audience gets subtitles). Alpha tells the story of man’s best friend. More accurately, it’s the story of “first man’s best friend.” Set as the last ice age ended, Alpha is part survival story, part coming of age. When a boy is left for dead after a hunting accident, he befriends an injured wolf as they both struggle to find their packs. The movie is being praised as a surprise hit because of its visual scope, action and authenticity. The film’s producers

When a movie producer calls, she asks for as much information about the story and the director’s vision as she can. For a movie like Man of Steel, there was 80 years of cultural references. But for Alpha, she started from a virtual blank slate. She researched how languages are related (think of the Romance languages) and how they’ve shifted over time. It’s like building a language’s family tree. “We can see how patterns look and use them as a model,” said Schreyer. Then, she can get creative by inventing sounds, words and structures with “what feels good” and “what sounds good.” It’s an estimate for a conlang like Cro-Magnon, but it’s an extremely well-educated guess. Schreyer, a mother of one little boy, came to UBCO about a decade ago. The 39-year-old St. Andrews, Man., native has always known what she wanted to do when she grew up. “I knew I wanted to be an anthropologist when I was 12,” Schreyer said. Once her education began, it became more clear what she was most interested in learning. “The language piece just really spoke to me.” Her success with Hollywood will likely continue, especially when you get to speak for Superman. Kryptonian dictionary, anyone? It would be a best-seller. “I’ll get Superman fans emailing me saying, ‘I wanna get a tattoo, can you translate this for me?’ No, I can’t.” Usually, her work is limited to the dialogue in the script. Creating a language is limited to how much is needed for the movie. She doesn’t create the “entire” language. It only picks up when fans or media during interviews plead for more. During Man of Steel, reporters would often ask her to say something in Krypton. “I do go beyond, but not much beyond,” she said. “For instance, there was no Krypton word for ‘hello’ until after the movie.”

PUPPY LOVE TOD FALL/ WINTER 2018 According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, it is officially the year of the dog, and the fashion industry is running with it. And thanks to the TOD’s Fall 2018 show in Milan, we saw models including Gigi Hadid, Liu Wen and Vittoria Ceretti making their entrance carrying an assortment of live puppies in their arms, from bulldogs to chihuahuas. And there is more than just cuteness to it as the collection itself features little nods to the canine stars, too, emphasizing Tod’s specialty, which is, of course, accessories. Dog-shaped keychains on bags, whether it was a large, sturdy tote or a small box clutch strapped to the hand, and a colour palette that coordinated well with the animals’ natural coloring. The TOD designers also made a strong case for their outerwear with trenches, parkas, shearling blousons, and trendy puffers.

ONCE UPON A TIME, OUR HOME & BUSINESS BURNED TO THE GROUND. In July of 2017—just one year after my husband Dr. Wesley Woychuk and I opened the doors to W180MD, an anti-aging and regenerative medicine oasis—our beloved home and clinic were destroyed by the fast moving wildfire in Lake Country, BC. Thankfully, we were able to get out just in time with our pets, but W180MD as we knew it was no longer standing.

Lauren Woychuk, Director of Operations, W180MD

The original vision for W180MD was modest but distinct. We wanted to offer the community a private, comfortable, boutique clinic where they could work on their inner and outer health. At the time, it made sense for us to build the clinic into the bottom half of our home in Lake Country, with the front doors just steps away from an outdoor poolside space built with our patients in mind.

The months that followed were hard, but thanks to the unbelievable support of our community and our patients, we were determined to rebuild and renew. All of this love has inspired us to bring W180MD back bigger and better, and our minds and hearts have been busy building our team and restoring our

REVERSE HAIR LOSS WITH PRP By Dr. Janna Bentley

T

An effective treatment for hair loss and balding patches is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) – using your own blood! We are very happy with results we see with both men and women. PRP is a Health Canada approved collagen stimulating therapy that uses the patient’s own platelets and plasma extracted from a small sample of their blood. It is increasingly gaining acceptance by hair-loss surgeons also. Causes of Hair Loss As we age, hair loss is related to hormone changes in both males and females. There is a genetic predisposition to balding in any gender. Your grandfather or dad suffer from male pattern hair loss? You probably will as well. Treatment Options The serious solution is hair transplant surgery. Besides down-time and surgical risk, this is a considerable investment. Vancouver expert surgeons, Hasson & Wong, suggest on their website that surgery can be $6000 to $30000 (depends on number of grafts). PRP on the other hand is non-surgical, no down-time and relatively inexpensive, so it is a good option. (But not really an alternative to hair transplant surgery if that is what is needed.) Rogaine (applied topically), or Propecia (a pill), are effective drugs to slow down thinning hair. These are effective combined with PRP – and in fact, shouldn’t be stopped after PRP.

after month two. After the initial treatment regime, a patient should continue with one treatment every year depending on results.

How PRP Hair Stimulation Treatment Works According to specialists, PRP “…appears to clinically reactivate hair that is not growing, strengthen existing hair and prolong to longevity of thinning hair.”

Downtime & Risk PRP should be performed by a doctor or qualified nurse in an accredited medical facility. In this setting, it is quite safe: a very low risk of any complication. PRP itself is not new – it has been used effectively for years in the treatment of burns, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and physiotherapy to accelerate wound healing. What makes PRP enticing for many is that it doesn’t use anything foreign or artificial – there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction.

Once injected, the platelets naturally activate and release essential growth factors and signaling proteins, which are responsible for the wound-healing process and skin rejuvenation. Our ideal patient has mild to moderate hair loss, and/or specific balding or thinning patches. Expectations should be to restore two or three years’ worth of recent hair loss. PRP Treatment Overview PRP starts with taking a small sample of the patient’s blood with a syringe. Next, the blood sample is spun in a medical centrifuge (about 10 minutes, onsite) to concentrate the platelet rich plasma. Finally, the patient’s own plasma is then injected with a small needle in a pattern in the desired areas of the scalp. PRP takes approximately 25 to 40 minutes to perform.

PRP Conclusion: Hair Restoration in Any Gender When PRP is concentrated with larger volumes it can be effective stimulating hair growth since it stimulates the development of new hair follicles and improves the health of existing ones. BUT PRP is not a cure for baldness. This therapy is best for patients who are not candidates for a surgery or those wanting a nonsurgical approach to hair loss therapy. It has few (if any) side effects and a very short recovery time.

Author: Dr. Janna Bentley is a cosmetic medical doctor and owner/founder of Lakeshore Vein & Aesthetics Clinic

Value & Number of Treatments Patients typically pay $700 to $1000 per treatment, with a treatment regime of three to four treatments recommended on average. For reference, a four treatment package at our clinic is $3,250. Treatments are separated by approximately a month each. As stated, each patient needs a personal consult. Results should start to appear after the third treatment, about

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

DIVORCE SUCKS ... but I sure did learn a lot. Divorce sucks. It can feel like a death in the family. Friendships can get strained, kids can get confused... anger raises its ugly head. Finances get messy and emotions run high. It doesn’t matter how amicably a couple splits, the roller coaster of emotions is still very real. Perhaps it’s easier or quicker for certain people, but generally, a broken marriage, even when it’s the right thing to do, still hurts. The hurt, the loneliness, the guilt and blame… all of these emotions are needed before finally getting to a place of acceptance. And from what I experienced, once I reached acceptance, I had the humbling opportunity of learning from my mistakes. (So in reality, I figured out that I wasn’t perfect. Ugh) I’ll never forget the day I finally told my mom that I loved my husband but wasn’t in love with him. I didn’t see myself growing old with him, and I knew deep down he felt the same way. We were going through the motions of #adulting but missing the very foundation of a long-term relationship. We lacked respect for each other, we lacked commitment, and to put it plainly, we didn’t have a desire to put the other person’s needs and desires ahead of our own. We got married pretty much out of high school. Most people would say that we were kids and it’s no surprise that we got divorced. Who knows who they are at 21 years old anyways? Wrong. I know plenty of high school couples who married young and are still together today. The difference is that they make the choice to be together. They made a choice to grow up together.

we need quality time together. It’s my love language and I need time together to be happy. Have zero shame in directly asking for what you need. Choose to connect. Whether it’s a butt tap or grabbing a forearm in passing... keep touching. Make meaningful eye contact, kiss, and cuddle. Hold hands. “Stop expressing your love for me” – said no one in a happy relationship. Choose the little things. Big gestures aren’t always the cat’s meow. Starting the vehicle in the winter, or regularly making the morning coffee is all that is needed to stay thoughtful of each other. This cannot be one-sided. Actions speak louder than words. Choose to confront. Sigh. Confrontation is not typically comfortable. Hence why it is avoided so often... but it’s not worth it to bottle stuff up - how can someone adjust their actions when they have no clue they’re pissing you off? And no personal attacks, it’s not cool. Choose not to cross the line. One crazy thing about social media is that people from our past sometimes pop up. A harmless conversation is fine, but that line is incredibly easy to cross and is a slippery slope. If crossing that line is tempting, you need to shut it down. That little bit of attention is not worth losing who you love.

We live in a very disposable time. The only vehicle I’ve ever fully owned was the 1989 Honda Accord my parents bought me; and believe me, as soon as I could trade that baby in for a $35,000 bi-weekly payment plan - I did. Oh wait, and then as soon as that one needed new tires, I buried the negative equity into a newer model. God forbid I not have a back-up camera or heated steering wheel.

Choose to be new. Oh how I love nights with a bottle of red, Netflix, and warm pyjamas... but... it’s good to explore new places and faces together. I’m talking about things as simple as moving from the couch to the kitchen table, or playing a game instead of streaming. My fav… getting a coffee and taking a drive together.

Many of us, including myself, have treated a relationship the same way... disposable. Much like a vehicle, there will always be a newer model out there; and that dang self-park feature is pretty cool too. But let’s get real. At the end of the day, I can park my old Ford Edge just fine. I know it’s every curve, odd sound, and blind spots. Sure, it might let me down on the Coquihalla one day, but the chance of that happening is pretty slim if I’m properly maintaining it. I can choose to invest and maintain my “old” vehicle, or I can trade it in for a new one and start the cycle all over again. To put it bluntly, I traded in. HAHA!

We may live in an era of “disposables”, but lifelong relationships require an investment, so don’t be too quick to dispose of it. Kudos to the people who figure this out early on… clearly, I wasn’t one of them. And as far as my vehicle analogy goes, you get the idea... so feel free to trade your vehicles in, just don’t do what I did and hide one in the garage for two weeks before saying anything to your hubby - bad choice! (oops, still learning) …

Now that I’ve learned the hard way (and expensive way) about the effort that needs to be invested in a relationship, the second time around I am extremely conscious of my choices and value these choices the most:

We often hear that the Okanagan is ‘Canada’s Lake Como or Tuscany”. With rolling vineyards and gorgeous lake scenery – the romantic Italian comparison is palpable. During a quick adventure throughout the Amalfi coast, I couldn’t help but notice several savvy Italian design trends that I am excited to bring back to my Okanagan ‘dreamhome’ clients. Firstly, entertaining is unpretentious, frequent and beautifully organic – a value we hold dear in our BC hearts as well. The Italians sure know how to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, be it a glass of local vino on the terrace, a delicious tomato salad from the garden or a frothy cappuccino in the arms of a lover in the morning. Fresh bread is served on gorgeous rustic slabs of wood, bite-size appetizers presented in seashells, and fresh herbs and edible flowers are on everything! How easy and fun would it be to make a ‘Bruschetta Bar” during your next dinner party? Homemade crostini, fresh basil pesto, roasted peppers in olive oil, sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions, tomato chili relish, and an assortment of organic charcuterie and cheeses? Yum! While entertaining this Fall at home – I will be incorporating these natural, charming elements as often as possible. Very rarely do we design a dreamhome in the Okanagan without including a fabulous wine cellar (or creating a designated wine space) in the plan. Italians are the same! I love incorporating a variety of display styles (some bottles standing up, some laying down in boxes or on rods, etc.) and including decorative wine-related items – like vintage wine crates, gorgeous antique bottle openers, crystals to encourage spectacular aging of cellared bottles, and corks in pretty glass jars are all tempting options. Oversized wine-related photography or artwork, under-shelving ambient lighting, a wine diary outlining when to drink certain bottles in your inventory or documenting your favorite ‘wine moments’ are fun additions. Old barrels, books on wine, and of course ample bottles from your favorite local wine clubs are a must!

Italians are known for their confident flair and bold pattern choices and I can’t wait to bring home some Mediterranean pizzazz (… no not pizza – although I would happily bring some of that back too!) Stunning patterned tiles in foyers, on backsplashes and across island fronts creates an instant-cool factor that exceeds the typical ‘builder beige’ palette. Naples-inspired graffiti on furniture and drapery is a fantastico way to add an urban edge that feels untamed and sexy. La vita è bella! The trendy plant of today is without a doubt the cactus. Not only are these plants architecturally sculptural, they have some of the most unique colorful flowers - and require minimal maintenance- win win win! An indoor boho-chic cactus collection in artisan pottery and planters is all the rage on top of a gorgeous console table or kitchen windowsill. We like to adorn our cactus with beautiful vintage brooches, or place decorative objects inside of our cactus like crystal skulls or insect jewelry. My next go-to favorite is using a collection of orchids to glam up a mantle or island. Orchids (with some TLC) can last for several months and provide feminine, soft beautiful flowers that look exotically expensive and formal, without being fussy. Air plants are another low maintenance- extremely interesting favorite that we can get super creative with (try placing them in broken sculpture, ceiling-hung glass balls, or amethyst votives). The other “living luxury” we often include in our dream homes are potted fruit trees (lemons, limes, grapefruits, oranges etc...). Nothing is more fun than telling your summer BBQ guests to grab their own lime off the tree for their beer, or to cut fresh lemons for homemade lemonade. These trees love the Okanagan sun and look stunning in the backyard, on a patio, or in a kitchen corner window. Did you know that there is such a thing as pink lemons, yes pink lemonade is an authentic rarity. There are several greenhouses in town who will pick up your trees in the Fall and store them for the Winter so they come back even more lush and loaded with ready-toeat fruit. With their size, we most often put these trees in large, plastic pots (so they are lighter to move) but don’t be afraid to paint or decorate your plastic pots. They can look just as dressy as ceramic with a little love (scribble words, hot glue adornments or tie

ribbon around the base and be sure to have some lovely, trailing under-plantings). Bird of Paradise trees, fiddleleaf figs and dracaenas fill living room and bedroom corners brilliantly. We love getting creative with our pots- try using wicker baskets, hand-painted pottery, copper tubs or wine barrels for added interest. Ferns absolutely love humidity so they are the perfect plant to put in your ensuite beside a freestanding tub if you’re seeking some greenery in this often un-floral space. Tall tropicals like palms look amazing all Summer long down the dock. Every home needs a herb garden, whether you keep this inside or outdoors- nothing elevates home cooking like fresh herbs and edible flowers. My absolute must-haves are edible pansies, sweet basil, lemon thyme, rosemary, pineapple mint, sage and lemongrass. Displayed in their own pots (so they don’t cross-contaminate) and labeled clearly is a must-do. We freeze lavender in our ice cubes and cut fresh cilantro for our jalapeño margaritas all Summer long. You will never reach for the dried, powder-ground herbs again. Go beyond your basic cut floral arrangement and try decorating your home with plants, trees and succulents!

HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR DONATION TO

THE CENTRAL OKANAGAN FOOD BANK For over 30 years, the Kelowna and West Kelowna Community Food Banks have provided nutritious meals for struggling families. Now, the amalgamated Central Okanagan Food Bank (COFB) serves between 3,000 and 4,000 individuals per month. This support is possible through individual donations – and while all donations are appreciated, specific kinds of donations make the biggest impact. Here are just a few ways that you can maximize your donation. Monetary Donations are Most Helpful The best way to support Food Bank users is to donate money. The COFB has access to a network of retail partners that sell to us wholesale. That means every dollar you donate to the Food Bank buys three dollars worth of food for a family in need. Donating Food? Try to Think About Meal Planning If you do decide to donate non- perishable food items, it’s best to try to combine items into planned meals. For instance, donating pasta, tomato sauce, and canned vegetables

together makes it easy for a family in need to create a quick pasta dish. Baby Supplies are Always in Demand Many families who receive Food Bank assistance have young children, which is why donating baby supplies is a great way to support the COFB. You can support a family with young children by donating items like baby food, infant formula, diapers, and baby wipes. Plan Your Giving with Legacy Donations Currently, the COFB relies on direct fundraising efforts to fund its programs – but in 2011, we established our own charitable foundation with a longterm plan to sustain the Food Bank budget through foundation grants. With a legacy donation, you can help us to secure the Food Bank’s long-term operations and reduce our reliance on fundraising events. Things We Can’t Use To ensure food safety, we cannot use; alcoholic beverages, items past expiry date, open or partially used items, rusty or unlabeled cans, or severely dented cans. For a list of most needed items, client or volunteer information, please visit: www.cofoodbank.com

THE CHARITY RUN 3RD ANNUAL OKANAGAN DREAM RALLY RAISES $425,000 The 2018 Okanagan Dream Rally was without a doubt the biggest and most exciting year yet with an incredibly generous Launch Party and Live Auction on Saturday, followed by an amazing turn out Downtown Kelowna on Sunday morning. “The August Family Foundation Dream Rally is the charity event of the year! I am fortunate enough to participate in several children’s charity events annually and this Rally is always the highlight of our year! The largest, most successful charity event I know of, and to see the joy of these children is truly priceless!” - Brent Marshall, Driver and Sponsor. The Ronald McDonald House BC/Yukon is a home away from home for the families and loved ones of individuals who need to travel for hospital care. The house serves over 2,000 families each year and over 30% of residents were from the Okanagan in 2017. “We had a goal to raise $500,000.00 for the Ronald McDonald House from 2018-2020 and we are unbelievably excited to be nearly at our goal within the first year.” – Matt August, Founder and President. For the last three years the annual Okanagan Dream Rally has been the primary charitable event of the August Family Foundation. This unique event pairs children in need with a driver of a supercar or luxury vehicle for a special drive and a day they will never forget. Since the inception of the August Family Foundation, in 2014, the foundation has raised a total of 827,000.00 for the Central Okanagan Hospice Association, Autism Okanagan, KidSport, and now the Ronald McDonald House BC/ Yukon.

BUSINESS VALUE WHAT’S YOUR GUESS

?

?

Whether you’re planning to buy an existing business or expect to sell one you currently own, one of the biggest challenges involves deciding on a fair value. As a Buyer, paying too much, risks damaging future profits, by digging too deep of a hole early in your ownership cycle. As a Seller, asking too little, unfairly discounts the investments made to create a successful business. Believe it or not, one of the most common ways people price a business for sale is by guessing: “Well, I paid X dollars ten years ago and made Y dollars a year in profit, so I’ll figure a 10 percent annual increase in value and sell it for Z dollars.” Or, I need “X” to retire so I’ll ask “X”. Good luck convincing an informed buyer that the price you posted is an accurate one. This is neither a profitable nor a sensible exit strategy. Revenue Versus Profit A popular method to price an existing business is looking at the annual revenue and applying acceptable industry multiples to determine value. Every industry has its own “multiple”. For example, a manufacturing company may sell for “2 times revenue”, a service company for “1 times revenue”. While this is a quick and easy guide to price it only reveals part of the story as revenues do not mean profitability and most companies DO NOT SELL for a Multiply of REVENUE. Seller Discretionary Earnings (SDE) A Meaningful Number Calculation of SDE is a much more accurate assessment of a company’s value. Start by comparing historical annual revenues of the last 3-5 year period and forecast future revenue trends. Then subtract the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)

78

OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Fall 2018

?

from revenues to determine Gross Profit. Next subtract stated expenses to get your net profit before tax. Net Profit is a meaningful number for tax purposes, but it does not tell you how much money the owner is actually putting in his or her pocket. Continuing with our calculation. A detailed analysis of all business expenses will determine which expenses are necessary and which expenses are non-necessary/non-essential expenses. For example, assume a business owner pays their personal vehicle expenses of $10,000 per year, through the company. This is a non–necessary/non-essential business expense to the successful operation of the business. Therefore, the $10,000 would be a legitimate add back to the net profit for determining SDE. Also, long term interest on debt service would be added back to net profit, along with any allowable amortization (depreciation allowance) of assets. And finally, if the owners are paying themselves a salary that is stated in the expenses, then a “fair” market rate for the job the owner is doing would be added back as well. For example, if owner is taking a salary of $125,000 but the job could be hired out at $75,000 per year, then the add back would be $75,000. Example of SDE Calculation $50,000 - Net Profit (per accountant prepared financial statements) ADD BACKS $20,000 - Amortization (allowable CRA Deprecation) $10,000 - Long Term Interest Cost $75,000 - Owner’s Salary (fair market rate) $10,000 - Vehicle expense (personal use and non- necessary business expense) $ 5,000 - Travel expense (personal use and non- necessary business expense) ----------$120,000 - Total Add Backs $170,000 - SDE (Seller Discretionary Earnings)

Now we have a meaningful SDE number. You can see, there is a big difference between net profit and SDE. Based on the industry and many other

factors, a proper multiplier of SDE can now be applied to the SDE to get a range of the most probable Selling Price Value for, taking the guessing game out of the equation. Ask an Expert SDE is one of several methods of Valuation. Many other points need to be considered, as well, such as the industry sector outlook, barriers to entry of new competition, management team, etc. Business Brokers, are an excellent source of advice when trying to place a value on a business. Whether you are the buyer or the seller, Business Brokers are engaged in the process to buy and sell companies all day long – and have their fingers on the pulse of business valuation. Don’t hesitate to get them involved.

1987 Lamborghini LM002

N

o, it is neither a Jeep nor a Hummer. The green monster you see here is a Lamborghini! A Mad Max Lamborghini, a Rambo Lambo: the LM002. It was the first real off-road vehicle to be unveiled by Automobili Lamborghini at the Geneva Auto Show in 1982. This 6,780 pound machine carries the same 5.2-liter four-cam, 48-valve V-12 as the Countach, producing 444 horsepower. The one exception is that this one ingests its fuel through six dual-throat Weber carburetors hidden inside a massive, cast-aluminum airbox.

It could climb a 120% gradient and reached a top speed of 210 km/h, with an acceleration of 0 to 100 in 7.8 seconds. You couldn’t enjoy this performance for long, though. Even with its huge 290L/ 76 gal fuel tank a fuel consumption of up to 50 l on 100 km (that’s 5 mpg!) would barely get you from Kelowna to Vancouver. The body is aluminum and fiberglass, and the tyres were specially developed by Pirelli with a view to provide top grip performance on both soft and uneven terrains. Around 330 LM002s were made between 1986 and 1993. This Kelowna-based example is one of only two painted in “Verde”, and was originally delivered to Japan, before it came to the US and was fully restored by Driven Exotics in California.

Built strictly for racing and powered by Ferrari’s Tipo 168/62 V12 engine, the 250 GTO dominated its classes during its short but history making run from 1962 to 1964. Although only 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs were manufactured between 1962 and 1964, the production relating to 250 GTO models consisted of: Two1961 Prototypes, 32 1962–63 SI 250 GTOs, three 1962–

63 330 GTO with a larger 4 litre engine, one 1963 250 GTO with LM Berlinetta style body and three 1964 SII 250 GTO (outright new cars - not including the 4 S1 cars which were re-bodied). All of the cars still exist today apart from one of the prototypes which was dismantled in period. When new, the GTO cost $18,000 in the United States (, with buyers personally approved by Enzo Ferrari and his dealer for North America, Luigi Chinetti), and it was only in 1986, when the first 250 GTO (chassis number 3589GT) was sold for US$ 1 million. The very same car sold for US4.2 million just two years later. Prices have gone up steadily ever since.

MOST EXPENSIVE CAR SOLD AT AUCTION Another Ferrari 250 GTO set a record at the RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey, California. The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis number “3413 GT,” is the third among all 36 units of the 250 GTO and was used as a test car by Ferrari before embarking on a racing career that began at the 1962 Targa Florio. It is also one of only four Ferrari 250 GTOs that were upgraded in period by Scaglietti with series II GTO/64 coachwork. As expected, it beat its own expectation: The winning bid ended at $44 million with fees bringing up the total to $48.405 million. The sale not only beat the previous auction record for a Ferrari 250 GTO — #3851 was sold by Bonhams for $38,115,000in 2014 — it also became the most expensive car ever sold at an auction.

The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

by Dr. Christian Brix

The Evolution of “Brave” In every article I read regarding bravery and courage, each writer begins by describing how the dictionary defines those words. I will spare you and the printers those spaces on this page because I think we know those most basic definitions. Of more interest to me is how these concepts have evolved over time. For some reason I have always been fascinated by our earliest human predecessors. I am going back, I mean way back, to our most primitive ancestors almost 2 million years ago. I wonder what “brave” would have been defined as for a culture that had extremely limited language, resources, conveniences, or tools. What stands out about those first humans to me is literally how simple their lives must have been. I imagine the day would consist primarily of: get food, eat food, make/care for babies, don’t die. If there was a word (or a grunt I suppose) to describe bravery, I think it would likely be used in describing the human who, with perhaps only a very primitive weapon, could stalk and kill a very dangerous or large animal. Driven only by hunger and the desire to perpetuate his/her life, this early human would risk it all to feed a family or a small community. Of course in those times, a small wound or injury could certainly be fatal, so going out for a hunt would have been extremely dangerous. Quite brave if you ask me! Fast forward to last week when I saw an Instagram post of someone who put up a photo of herself without any makeup or filters on. The positive and congratulatory comments were from people who were “inspired” and “proud”. Many literally used the words brave and courageous to describe her post. My eye muscles were sore from rolling so much, but then I took time to really think about it. So how do we connect the different “types” of brave? Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela were Brave because they stood up for what they believed in, paid dearly for it, but are seen as heroes for their respective causes. Steve Jobs and Elon Musk took massive risks financially to become the innovators who have changed the world in countless ways. But do you have to change lives to be brave? What about the girl who finally puts her hand up to answer a question in class when speaking in front of people is literally her biggest fear? What about the child who made a mistake and with punishment in his future, decides to confess to his parents regardless? What about the mother who was

86

strong and happy for her kids and protected them from the reality of her losing battle with cancer? I would argue that what we define as brave has changed as we have evolved. Some would argue it has devolved! To be more specific, it could be described as a movement away from simple and more primitive opportunities to be tested to a society that is the exact opposite. As society becomes more complicated, as we become more intertwined and connected, and as we move forward culturally and technologically, we find that new demands for courage present. Every year or generation that goes by produces more “things” that we have to fear or overcome. As we complicate our lives, we create new ways to be challenged and tested. And it is these challenges that allow for us to take our bravery for a test spin. I may not be risking my life jumping on the back of a wooly mammoth or saving someone from a burning building, but when I risk my job to speak up or go to the doctor to address a symptom I have been pretending isn’t there, I am being brave. A scene in Game of Thrones captured it so well: “Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he is afraid?’ ‘That is the only time a man can be brave’ his father told him. As we have evolved, we have created countless fears, insecurities and “consequences” to our decisions, and we have exponentially increased the number of decisions we need to make in a given day. The more choices we face, the more we are taking risks. What is common between us and the first hunter-gatherers however- and all that actually matters when deciding what bravery really is- is that when one stands up in the face of a fear, he/she is being brave. We cannot compare or judge what might be an act of courage, because there are as many acts as there are fears in the world. Going to war for your country and facing your insecurities by not wearing make-up in a photo may seem diametrically different, but they are both real people facing that which scares them. Be brave gentlemen!

Mercedes-Benz EQC It was at the 2016 Paris Motor Show that Mercedes-Benz first presented its new product and technology brand for electromobility. In mid-2019 the time has come: the EQC is the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to be launched under the EQ brand. With its seamless, clear design and colour highlights typical of the brand, it is a pioneer for an avant-garde electric look while representing the design idiom of Progressive Luxury. With respect to quality, safety and comfort the EQC is the Mercedes-Benz among electric vehicles. These are accompanied by dynamic performance, thanks to two electric motors at the front and rear axles with a combined output of 300 kW. Dynamic performance meets efficiency. The EQC features an all-new drive system development with compact electric drivetrains at each axle. These give the EQC the driving characteristics of an all-wheel drive. To reduce power consumption and increase dynamism, the electric drivetrains are configured differently: the front electric motor is optimised for best possible efficiency in the low to medium load range, while the rear one determines dynamism. Together, they generate an output of 300 kW and a maximum torque of 765 Nm. The lithium-ion battery, which has an energy content of 80 kWh supplies the vehicle with power.

EQC supports its driver. The power consumption and range of electric vehicles depend very much on the driving style. The EQC supports its driver with five driving programmes, each with different characteristics. In the more economical driving modes, the haptic accelerator pedal that prompts the driver to conserve power plays an important role. The ECO Assist system gives the driver comprehensive support when driving predictively: by prompting the driver when it is appropriate to come off the accelerator, and by functions such as coasting and specific control of recuperation. For this purpose, navigation data, traffic sign recognition and information from the intelligent safety assistants (radar and stereo camera) are linked and processed. Charging: flexible and fast. The EQC is equipped with a water-cooled onboard charger (OBC) with a capacity of 7.4 kW, making it suitable for AC charging at home or at public charging stations. Depending on the SoC (status of charge), the EQC can be charged with a maximum output of up to 110 kW at an appropriate charging station. In around 40 minutes, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent SoC (provisional data). No word (yet) on pricing and a Canadian market launch date.

PROTECT YOUR EYES How Blue Light From Your Screen and Phone May Be Hurting Your Eyes It starts in the morning: Still in bed, you check your email and social feeds on your phone. Then you head off to work, where you’ll stare at a computer for the next eight hours. Later that night, you sink into the couch and chill with a few episodes of your latest Netflix obsession. How do your eyes feel? Despite more than 40 years in the optical business, even Dan Harder must admit he didn’t take care of his eyes in the best way. Harder is owner of Eyecraft Optical on Main Street, and said he has a cataract forming in one eye. It started because he didn’t wear sunglasses as youth growing up in the 1960s, during the days when sun worshipping was just part of life. “And now I’m paying for it,” he admits. Harder sees something similar happening with today’s youth, but instead of soaking up rays without sunglasses outside, they’re staring at computer screens indoors. Constant exposure to blue light -- more prevalent today as we rely more on L.E.D. lighting and computer screens -- is likely going to cause macular degeneration as younger generations age. “You’re being bombarded by blue light,” Harder said. “If you don’t protect yourself now, you’re going to pay for it later in life.” But there is a solution: Eyecraft Optical stocks a range of lenses coated with blue-light blocking technology. The lenses are now being coated with special films to filter out blue light. According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, blue light exposure

can lead to cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, eye strain and sleep issues.

tailored for distance vision. Those who read or sew could get their glasses for close-up tasks.

Once upon a time, blue-light filtering glasses looked like something for construction workers. They were large and distinctively orange. Today, the technology has advanced enough that it’s nearly impossible to detect bluelight blocking lenses.

It’s cutting-edge technology, literally. Harder says he’s started offering the service within that last year.

It’s just one way technology has impacted the business for the better, Harder said. For baby boomers -- those who might have been sun worshippers like him who are now using progressive lenses -- digital lens grinding is having the biggest impact. Computerized technology allows manufacturers to grind your glasses along the entire curve of the lens. “We can customize it better to your lifestyle,” Harder said. That means if you love golf or you drive a lot, the lens could be

Older lenses would be measured from 15 millimetres from the eye, but by the time the lens reached the edge, your glasses might be 40 to 50 millimetres away. Automatically, you will get peripheral vision. “Now, they recalculate every millimetre as they grind it across the lens,” Harder said. Eyecraft Optical is located at 2415 Main St. in West Kelowna.
