PUBLISHER’S LETTER 100, Baby!
There is something magic about this number. One Hundred. It has 3 digits, it looks and it sounds better. And in this case it means our page count. For the first time in 8 years, ICON Okanagan has reached 100 pages. And there is more - this edition is perfect bound, which is something we have been looking forward to for many years. 8 years to be exact. Time to celebrate - and what is better than to celebrate it with a cover with one of our local gold medal winners? Kelsey Serwa from Kelowna and Justin Kripps from Summerland both won a gold medal in PyeongChang, China! Congratulations, guys, we are super proud of you! Both Kelsey and Justin have been in the magazine before, but this is the first time we have both of them in one edition, both of them proudly presenting their highest achievements to date.
Olaf Robrecht
With Ed Kennedy we welcome our new group publisher to the team, while we had to say goodbye to Krista Frasz, who left the Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group after 25 years. Over the years, Krista became more than just the Director of Advertising for the magazine, she will be missed. All the best, Krista, stay in touch! Back to business - and there is a lot of it in this edition. Those of you who love “anything speed” - we have a big automotive and Waterfun special. It’s the time of the year, enjoy the outdoors, and explore our beautiful valley. Our patio guide will help you to find the place with the best vistas, while those of you who have decided to give your home a new look will find great tips and ideas in our big Home & Decor section. It’s interesting - now that we have 100 pages, we actually ran out of space and had to postpone two stories to the next edition. See you next time!

The Gentleman
They should have taught you this in school....
by Dr. Christian Brix
Get your House in Order! “Treat your home as if it was your kingdom, and those that enter will see what you have built!” We won’t bother to start a discussion about whether one should own or rent, because there are two good schools of thought on that for sure. What can’t be debated however, is the fact that at this stage in your life, your home is truly a reflection of who you are. This isn’t your college dorm room anymore, and if you are truly committed to being a gentleman, then it’s time to get your place dialed in. Like this: Getting in The Spirits – It doesn’t necessarily have to be an expensive scotch, but one must always have something “special” on hand for a guest or a celebration. It also wouldn’t hurt to keep on hand all the ingredients to make a perfect old fashioned. Retooling – Nobody expects you to be Bob Vila (are you old enough to know who that is?), but you are expected to be able to fix most minor things around the house. Every dude should have a good power drill, a basic picture hanging set, wrenches, a set of screw drivers, and a solid tape measure. Shelf of Smartness – yes, at this point you should be a reader. If you are only learning about history or the world from the internet or your TV, then I guarantee that you are not interesting. Sure, you might even be more of an e-book kind of person, but a collection of some great books (not the required reading collection you have from high school) is a must. You should also always be able to answer the question “what is your favourite book?”
but a true gentleman takes pride in owning at least one great chef’s knife. Spend the money to get one, and we don’t mean the one that can cut a tin can followed immediately by a soft tomato. Great Rack – Even if you aren’t in wine country, it is important that one has at least a small collection of nice wines to offer a guest or enjoy on the patio. You don’t have to become a master sommelier, but it is always impressive to know enough to share a great bottle with friends. Artsy – I agree that the motivational quote under the waterfall picture in your bathroom can really get you fired up. At this stage though, it is time to be a bit more thoughtful about what goes on the walls. It is fantastic to own one or two pieces of “real” art, and it is something you won’t appreciate until you have done it. Terrible Terry – I would put mildew-smelling towels in the top three most horrible things in your house after a laundry pile and a sink full of dishes. Even if they are clean but still have that smell (from that one time you left them wet overnight in the washer), it is time for new ones. While you’re at it, please grab a matching sheet set, too! It was James Otis who said “A man’s house is his castle.” Sure, he died being struck by lightning standing in the doorway of a house, but the point was still received. Treat your home as if it was your kingdom, and those that enter will see what you have built. Or at the very least, just vacuum a bit more frequently.
Elevating your sleep – If your mattress is still sitting on the floor in your bedroom, then put this magazine down, go look into the closest mirror, and punch yourself in the face. You need a real bed, and maybe even splurge for a headboard! Something to keep alive – The first choice is always a cool dog that you love more than anyone, but at the very least, you have to have some living plants (no fake plants…ever). It shows you are mature enough to care for something other than yourself, and it is a fantastic excuse to stay home when people are dragging you out! “I can’t…my plants need me.” Stay Sharp – Yes you can carve a turkey using that steak knife you got when you moved out of parents’ house,

Once again Kelowna played host to the Canadian Culinary Championships (CCC), the final competition in the celebrated Gold Medal Plates series. Gold-medal winning chefs, from the 11 nation-wide city competitions, came to the city to demonstrate their culinary magic at three events: the Mystery Wine Pairing, the Black Box Competition, and the Grand Finale. Congratulations to Chef Alex Chen, of Vancouver’s Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar, who was crowned 2018’s Canadian Culinary Champion. Taking second place was Chef Éric Gonzalez, from Montreal’s L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, while third place honours went to Chef Barry Mooney, from Gio in Halifax.

STEAM IT! (or how to REMOVE CREASES IN NO TIME...)
C’mon guys – you love your shirts but you hate ironing, correct? There is a solution, and it is fun! A fabric steamer not only removes wrinkles, it also refreshes your clothing and other fabrics. It is a great improvement over the old stand-by, the iron. In fact, in many homes a garment steamer has replaced the common steam iron. And think about it - you can reduce the trips to the dry cleaners – saving money and reducing the use of harmful chemicals that dry cleaners use on your clothing. You can also refresh and remove wrinkles from your curtains and upholstery! How does it work? Steam is a tried and true sanitizer. And unlike some abrasive cleaners, steam is both penetrating and gentle at the same time. It effectively sanitizes because it can reach high temperatures (above the boiling point of water) in pressurized atmospheres. And, by effectively rehydrating and breaking the bonds of muck and dirt, it’s highly effective at spot-cleaning and deodorizing. And irons, of course, use steam to work the wrinkles out of fabrics when dryers don’t cut it. Some facts: Steam kills 99% of bacteria such as e-coli, listeria, and salmonella, as well as dust mites. Steam is environmentally friendly – it only uses water! And it is versatile - steam can be used virtually anywhere for a wide variety of tasks. Which model to chose... Garment Steamer There are many models to chose from, starting as low as $80, but as always you will get what you pay for. We compared several models, ranging from $80 to $300, and although in the end they all did their job, there are big differences. First of all in the quality of construction. The cheaper versions used very stiff plastic hoses which made it very difficult to move the handle they way you wanted. Also, some of the lower-end models were on (nonlockable) rollers and moved all the time while we tried to steam a shirt. Very frustrating. Same with the poles. Some steamers we checked out had only a thin fragile looking pole, others have 2 sturdy poles. The next difference lays in the steam control. Cheaper models

maybe even take it with you when you travel? How about a compact, portable unit? Have a look at the Rowenta X-Cel Steam Brush. It delivers unrivalled speed and convenience in wrinkle and crease removal for a wide variety of fabrics. It produced perfectly steamed garments in an easy process that eliminates the need for an ironing board, for greater efficiency. Features such as a start-up time of only 45 seconds, a removable 200ml tank, strong steam output that sanitizes and refreshes as it steams, lock position for continuous steam, on/off indicator, and more are ideal for garment care on a daily basis. Again – we did our homework, looked at many models, including multipurpose handheld steam cleaners, but found many differences. If you are looking for a portable unit, the Rowenta should be on top of your list. A Word of Caution Fabrics or textiles that cannot take heat or moisture should never be steamed. If a garment is labeled dry clean only, steaming could damage or leave moisture spots on the fabric. Use caution when steaming, especially with colors that could run -- it’s always best to test a small area inside a seam first. When in doubt, leave it for the experts at the dry cleaners.
usually only have one setting, while the more professional ones come with variable steam control which make it more versatile. Then the wattage, heat up time, how compact it is for storage. In the end and after a lot of research we found the Rowenta Roll & Press garment steamer. It is the only commercially rated steamer of its kind in Canada. Easy to use and control, a patented collapsible pole and wheel system let you steam anywhere, anytime. Exclusive variable steam function adapts the amount of steam to the fabric, heating up in just 60 seconds and effectivelly removing stubborn wrinkles from even the most difficult fabrics. An exceptional 1550 watts of power allows for more than two hours continuous steaming. It has an on-board accessory storage: includes crease attachment, fabric brush, lint brush, and steam bonnet for delicate fabric and integrated hanger and pant clips. MSRP is $189,99 Compact Garment Steamer So you don’t want or need a bigger stand-up garment steamer, but would still like to freshen up your garments once in a while, and get your shirts wrinkle-free? Experience Genesis “We strive to create the finest automobiles and related products and services for connoisseurs around the globe.” Buying a luxury sedan these days means sifting through a wide selection of enticing options. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar, Lexus, Acura - the list goes on and on. But what about Genesis? Genesis? Well, yes. The Korean brand may be fairly new to the luxury car market, but you cannot get more driving luxury for your money. Period. On March 10 Genesis of Canada announced that the Kot Auto Group would be a distributor of this new and Upcoming Luxury Brand in the Okanagan Valley. “The experience begins at your doorstep,” says Jayson Gazloff, one of the Genesis Experience Managers. “Genesis offers a true concierge service. It’s called “Genesis at Home” and means that you schedule a personal product demonstration right at your home or office. And then, instead of going to a dealership, the customer builds his own car online, on a computer or even the phone, and places the order. The Genesis at Home program is designed to make owning a vehicle as convenient as possible.” The car will get delivered within 10 days, right to the customer’s house. “Genesis at Home” even includes complimentary pickups of your car when it needs a service or maintenance. All you have to do is to contact your Experience Manager and they will come to your location of choice to pick up your vehicle. While your vehicle is serviced, a Genesis courtesy vehicle is left at your disposal.
Speaking of maintenace: It is included, for 5 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. Add free yearly navigation map updates, and a 5-year free 24/7 roadside assistance to it - yes, that’s the Genesis difference. “This is true, human-centered luxury,” says Gazloff. “When you combine all these features and benefits at pricing that undercuts the German luxury marques, you have a smarter, more progressive approach to the luxury car ownership experience that the finest of automobile connoisseurs will want to champion.” Three models are currently available: The brand-new G70, available with a 2.0L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder or a 365hp V6, the G80, and the ultimate luxury flagship model, the G90. Both the G80 and G90 are available with either a twinturbocharged V6, or a V8 engine. All-wheel drive is available for all three models. Genesis also announced a luxury SUV, expected to be available in 2019, and a sportscar, which will follow right after. If you would like to find out more about Genesis, just book an appointment online at www.genesiskelowna.ca and an Experience manager will meet you at either your residence or place of business. And if you decide to buy? Just pull out your phone and get it done. The vehicle and paperwork will get delivered directly to your doorstep. It’s that easy.

FULL SPEED! HOW BILL DROSSOS CAME TO LIVE THE MOTOR-SPORT DREAM
28
ICON OKANAGAN
www.iconokanagan.com
Spring 2018
The rubber hit the road early for the president and co-founder of Area 27, Bill Drossos when his parents decorated his room at three years old. The race car wallpaper sealed his fate. “I looked at these things every morning, every day. Back then you wonder what they are,” Drossos said. “TV back then had five channels. Whenever racing came on, the Indy 500 or something, it would be what I watched.” Enthralled by the risk of ‘70s motor-sports heroes, the gears starting turning early in his young mind. “You’re in this car, you’re doing this job and you’re on the limit. You could see the car sliding around. To me it seemed really exciting,” Drossos said. Born and raised in Penticton, Drossos felt at home behind the wheel, even if that first wheel was attached to a go-kart. His eyes still light up as he describes drifting into his first corner and learning the intricacies and artful science of racing. “It just all felt natural to me, something I wanted to do,” Drossos said. With a lack of racing leagues in his hometown of Penticton, he started ski racing to satiate his need for speed. Which worked until he got his driver’s license. After leaving high school and raising enough funds, he headed to racing school in Ontario where he would eventually work as a mechanic in exchange for racing in the school’s series. It was a fateful time in his life where Drossos first shook hands with Canadian racing pros Jacques Villeneuve and Patrick Carpentier. Friendships grew that would end up being crucial for the origins of the Area 27 track. “We were all teenagers racing F2000 cars against each other,” Drossos said. “We all became buddies at the time and our racing careers went in different paths and different directions.” Drossos returned to B.C. to create his own racing team in the GM Motorsport Series, where he met the man who would eventually build the Area 27 track, Trevor Seibert. With all the drivers and enthusiasts he met at racing schools in the middle of farmer’s fields, and coming from a tourist town, something clicked for Drossos and the dream of Area 27 started to ruminate. “If you had a track and a school and something like this in the Okanagan it would be something special. Then it
would be located in a place where people already wanted to go,” Drossos said. “It was in the back of my head ever since I was a teenager.” Much like a Hollywood film, he admitted with a laugh, Drossos started getting the old gang back together knowing he only had one crack at it. “It’s kind of like in the movies when they have to destroy the asteroid and they get this eclectic mix of people that all have their special skill set,” Drossos said. His first call was to Villeneuve attaching one of the biggest legacy names in motorsport to the project. Villeneuve would go on to build the 4.83-kilometre circuit capturing the essence of a classic Grand Prix track blending challenge and reward for drivers of all levels. “He said designing a track is something he’s wanted to do his entire life. Something he’s always wanted to do. At the time he said ‘yeah, I’ll be partners with you and we can do this.’ Partially I think he was just saying that will just get Bill off the phone,” Drossos laughed. “But he liked the idea, I mean, who doesn’t like the idea, but it’s how do you make that happen.” The second call went to Seibert to build the track, who had worked on a track that never came to fruition in Merritt. “He had done a lot of work and probably felt he had some unfinished business,” Drossos said. The next call wen to David King, a fellow Pentictonite that Drossos actually met for the first time in racing school in Ontario. King was brought on for his business experience. “Having someone with extensive business experience, but also in the sports and resort industries, as well as retail and you name it, was key to the whole thing,” Drossos said. “He’s been my task master from day one, telling me what to do and what I need to do next.” Working with Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos Indian Band, Drossos and the team were able to find the perfect location complete with natural sound buffers and ideal ground to lay a three-mile long, 40-foot wide track with all the materials required to build it sourced on site. “It’s absolutely the best location you could have anywhere in all of Canada for a track,” he said. “It’s one of the nicest circuits in North America. Possibly the smoothest one. There’s tracks that cost 10 Spring 2018
times what ours cost and aren’t as smooth and it’s simply due to the ground.” The experience was starting to fill up schedules and get exciting for Drossos as Area 27 started hosting social events around the Okanagan to build up membership and attending events to represent the track in the motorsport world. “It was all kind of a blur, but we made a pretty big splash and a lot of enthusiasts came out,” Drossos said. “People were skeptical, and justifiably so, but we were just too determined to stop.” With the momentum and curiosity building Area 27 has now shifted into selling out memberships and now hosting Academy 27 which is open to the public puts new drivers or those looking to sharpen their skills into an ASN-approved curriculum. The academy has attracted some bigname enthusiasts like renowned guitarist Tosin Abasi, hockey players and more. On top of that, “The Grand Tour,” one of the top TV shows in the world featuring former stars of “Top Gear” filmed at Area 27 last year. The entire world of motorsports and media had their eyes on Area 27 for the global launch of the Chevrolet Camero ZL1 1LE. The international media from almost every major motorsports outlet were on hand too. “For me it all started when I was a kid. I had a Road and Track subscription which I still have to this day,” Drossos laughed. It was a “dream scenario” for his first year, but much like the track, life keeps motoring on. “All those things in our first year, it’s like how do I follow that? I can retire now?” Drossos laughed. “There hasn’t been even much time to reflect. Every day there’s a lot to do and still more to do. Everything is just growing at a crazy pace.” From the day the idea of Area 27 solidified in his head in 2012, Drossos had about 70 contact in his phone. Now he’s almost adding a new number every day. He doesn’t do it alone, and Drossos displays clearly his appreciation of everyone who worked and continues to support his dream. “The fact that there’s so many people that are passionate for this track who are behind it and believe in it ... I’ve never done anything this rewarding,” Drossos said. www.iconokanagan.com

o you are a gearhead, you love cars, and you dream of zipping around a race track at twice the legal speed limit? Your buddies have been to Vegas and are telling you how cool it was to do a few laps in an exotic car? Well, there is something way better, and it will even help you handling your own ride on the road. And you can do it right here, in the Okanagan. The only thing is - you have to go back to school. At Area27, the South Okanagan’s Jacques Villeneuve designed 4.83km worldclass circuit, you need to be a member, or have a good buddy who is one, to be able to experience the thrill of speed. Unless you join Academy27. Academy 27 features one-on-one coaching from some of Canada’s top motorsport professionals and is available to drivers looking to refine their driving skills. Whether you just want an introduction to racing, or to obtain your racing license, or to improve your lap times with a professional coach, they have the right program for you. “We have been approved by ASN Canada FIA (ASN), the Sporting authority delegated by the FIA that oversees all Canadian national motorsport,” Bill Drossos of Area27 explains. “Area 27 is setting a new standard for private track education, and we provide motorsport enthusiasts with performance driving skills on a world-class circuit.” What is even better is that the courses are available to the public. “We have some of the best instructors here at the Academy,” says Drossos. “I believe you have featured our head coach, Kees Nierop in the magazine before? He has won the legendary Sebring 12 Hours of Endurance race, was a Porsche factory driver at the 1987 LeMans 24hr and Daytona, and is the only Canadian to have his name on a Porsche factory race car displayed in the new Porsche Museum in Germany! Kees and his team of six professionals, including Patrick Carpentier, Scott Hargrove, Remo Ruscitti, and Stefan Rzadzinski, will teach you how to safely explore the limits of your vehicle.“ The Academy is a 2.5-day long program, which starts in the classroom. You will learn about seating positions, braking techniques, and how to find the correct line through corners. Track safety is another key point – the meaning of the various flags, proper pit entry and exit procedures. And then you will go on the circuit, where the instructors teach you braking and downshifting techniques, cornering phases and linking turns and establishing correct lines, followed by a full circuit follow-the-leader lapping. Finally, you will do some open lapping sessions, followed by coach critiques, as well as a lapping session with the coach, to improve your consistency and to get a comprehensive performance evaluation. So what are you waiting for? For more information and to register for one of the Academy27 programs, please visit www.area27.ca or email academy@area27.ca

The Perfect
Okanagan Boat By DAVID TRIFUNOV
Brock Elliott loves a challenge. That’s why, when engine maker Volvo-Penta suggested an 18-foot wake-surfing boat might be impossible to build, the crew at Campion Marine in Kelowna produced the newest edition to his company’s Watersports Edition, the WS18.
but don’t have to worry about props), way easier to maneuver (especially at launches) and significantly more flexible (you can ski, board, tube or surf).
“They said, ‘we’re not sure you can do that,’” said Elliott, Campion’s president. “We proved that we could.”
A traditional stern-drive or outboard motor-powered boat isn’t safe for wake surfing, Elliott says, and compete with the wake created by the forward-facing Volvo-Penta motor combined with special features of Campion’s Watersport models.
The Watersports lineup — and the WS18 in particular — has arrived at the crossroads where new technology meets new consumer demands. The WS18 is the smallest wake-surf boat in the world, but more versatile than many of its larger competitors, Elliott says. The smaller size keeps the price down. The VolvoPenta Forward Drive engine and Campion knowhow did the rest.
That’s an important factor for Elliott. He’s seen a huge consumer shift away from wakeboarding to wake surfing.
Campion’s Watersports lineup includes four boats beginning with the WS18 and culminating with the WS25. Elliott doesn’t believe anyone can offer a better boat for B.C. than the 25-foot model. He should know. This August, Campion will celebrate its 45th anniversary in Kelowna. As a result, the WS25 is tailor-made for B.C. It boasts sleeping capabilities, toilet and sink thanks to its hybrid cuddy/bow rider design. It all makes it ideal for longer trips (say Vernon to Penticton) and family adventures. If you encounter rough water, or the weather changes, you’re not going to get swamped like many traditional wakeboard boats you might see on Okanagan Lake today. Want to change from a wet bathing suit? You can duck below and emerge prepared for dry-land outings. “It opens up a whole new way of boating,” Elliott says.
Campion WS18
Volvo’s engine uses forward-facing, counter-rotating props that pull boats through the water. “Think of an airplane instead of a push,” Elliott says. “That has opened up a whole new opportunity for manufacturers like Campion.” They’re safer (riders can surf three feet off the back of a boat,

MARINE FUEL Boat Gas vs Road Gas For BC Families the rising price of fuel has turned a fun day on the water into an expensive outing! Did you know that there are less expensive options to fuel your fun in the sun? Take a look around town. Are there any local fuel marketers that advertise a coloured alternative? This “marked“ equivalent is exactly like its clear counterpart but has been dyed with a small amount of colouring. This system was designed by our provincial government to make the product distinguishable. Why distinguish one type from the other? The answer would be taxation. In British Columbia, clear regular gasoline has 14.5 cents of “road tax” built into the price per litre. When a buyer purchases marked gasoline that 14.5 cents is removed from the base rate, significantly reducing the price of your gasoline. The catch is Marked Products can only be legally used by the general public for off highway applications. But good news! This means it is perfectly legal to run in your boat! It is important to note that the same dye is used all over North America and has been rigorously tested. It meets all warranty approvals and will absolutely not hurt your engine. Millions of litres marked gas and diesel are sold daily to construction, logging, farming and roadworks industries to run all of their offroad equipment. It’s also a great product to use in your lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, generators and ATV’S! In some communities, where options are limited, your best option will be a commercial cardlock. A bulk station like BBFD will generally serve a wider array of industries granting you access to both regular marked and premium marked gasoline.
The Great Ethanol Debate! Marine engines and Ethanol – Can you or can’t you? We might be asking the wrong question. Perhaps we should ask instead, should we or shouldn’t we? After researching, shopping and finally purchasing your boat you want to make sure you are putting the right fuel into it. There has been a great deal of debate surrounding Ethanol and when it was first introduced into the BC market as a mainstream fuel, we as a fuel company received a lot of information.
While Premium fuel remains ethanol free, there are regulations requiring an ethanol content in Regular Grade fuel. Commonly regular fuel is an E10. E10 means there is a ratio of 10% ethanol to 90% gasoline. Originally, marine users were encouraged to avoid ethanol content at all costs and with good reason. Ethanol, by nature is hydrophilic, meaning it holds water, which could lead to issues like clogged filters and in extreme situations damaged engines. However, more research has shown that a chemical process called “phase separation” was in fact, the main problem and something easily avoided. The common practice of leaving your tanks mostly empty can be problematic. This significantly increases the potential for condensation to occur and therefore introduce water into the system. When enough water gets in, the ethanol can separate (“phase separate”) from the gasoline. If phase separation occurs, this highly corrosive ethanol/water mixture will settle to the bottom of the tank, reducing the octane rating of your remaining fuel, and remain there even after new fuel is added. The only solution is to drain the tank and add fresh gasoline. The best way to avoid phase separation (aside from emptying the tank completely) is to leave the tank 95-percent full allowing for expansion. There will be less moist air in the tank, less space left for condensation to collect, and more gasoline to absorb whatever moisture does accumulate. If you are like me and would prefer to hit that easy button, protect your investment and avoid these potential complications, simply use marked premium for your marine engines. At Beecroft Fuels we continue to advocate this option but know many of our clients are running the E10 marked regular just fine. Happy Sailing!

BUY A ? BUSINESS ?
?
LOOKING TO
?
S
o you’ve decided to purchase a business, congratulations! Don’t go on this journey alone. Getting experienced, professional advice is key to setting yourself up for success. In fact, it’s part what we call your due diligence.
The two most common groups of people with whom you will seek advice regarding your new business purchase are your accountant and your lawyer. If you are the seller, then you should start assembling your “team” and plan an “exit strategy.” This includes a good business lawyer, a good accountant, and a good business broker. What you need as a buyer, especially one who is not necessarily a seasoned businessperson, is a lawyer and accountant that are deal makers and not deal breakers. You should also hire a professional business broker to get you the very best deal.
What will your accountant and your lawyer say about this purchase? What could either of these people bring to light that might represent a “RISK” to me?
?
Some examples of what you would hear are: • • • • • • • • •
What happens if key employees quit on you? Certain employees are a liability… too risky! What if the market drops? What about the competition taking over your turf? What if the landlord does ….? Or does not …? Is there a lease in place? The supply chain may not deal with you… The exchange rate could change, then what? There is no guarantee you will achieve the same numbers… • The equipment could become outdated or need replacing… • The cost is quite high or too high for this business! The bottom line is that (some of) these professionals are only looking for any negative sides of the purchase. Are there any actual risks? Yes of course! Any and every business has risk. The only sure way to have no risk in business is not to buy or start a business, period. Want low risk? Buy a Canada Savings Bond and enjoy a 1 to 1.5% return (taxable). Upsides are not addressed in these “discovery meetings.” In most cases a diligent and energetic buyer will see options and potential, and implement changes to improve the operation and the bottom line. You could also engage the services of a professional business broker, such as at Business Finders Canada, who would also review both the pros and cons with you. Does this mean I should not get advice from an accountant or lawyer? We’re not saying that! You should listen to what they have to say. Undoubtedly you will hear some things you may not have considered.

Notwithstanding, you need to see the big picture and you need to make the decision to purchase or not to purchase. Remember it’s your money and your livelihood at stake. Should someone – a lawyer, an accountant, a friend, or other confidant – talk you out of a deal that looked and/or felt right for you, they may have just stolen your future! Not every deal is the right one for you, that is a fact, but if the deal feels right, ask yourself, can I make this work? What does your gut say?
LEGEND
At the end of the day if you can visualize how to make that business work, perform better, and/or make yourself a good living doing what you want, and you understand the risk(s) involved after doing your “due diligence then regardless of the “naysayers,” roll up your sleeves and go for it!

Very rarely do we build, renovate or decorate a personal residence without incorporating a family ‘wall of fame’ photowall. These special collections of photographs always make a house feel like a home (it’s one of the first things we do if a client has moved into a new space and has anxiety about the property not yet feeling comfortable or personalized) and more often than not, we get an overwhelmed-with-emotion reaction when we install these walls for our clients (cue: happy tears!).
words: Sam Shakura photowalls: Rock House Style
We all have photographs from our childhood, our travels, old black and whites passed down from our family, and current photos filling up our smartphones – but it’s hard to know where to begin putting together a medley of images, in one collection, displayed in a creative and beautiful gallery wall. While they often look casual and haphazardly-placed, there is a science to creating a harmonious photowall. The secret is finding the perfect balance between frame styles, photography and spacing. Here’s how!

Step One: Relax… Have fun. It’s just drywall.
how you live today. Your images should include those who matter most to you. Candid, natural and emotive shots are always best, and high quality images will print the clearest.
Step Two: Measure your wall, determine how many frames (approximately) you’d like to display – I typically fill my wall 2/3 covered. Step Three: Begin collecting your frames – this can take several weeks as you hunt your favorite local design stores, thrift shops and galleries for the perfect frames that speak to you. Take pictures of frames as you purchase them, so you can easily reference whether a new frame will be a good fit with the rest of the collection. I always keep my matting the same color (watch out for bright whites vs. off-whites) even if I am varying the frame color or texture. I usually vary the frame sizes and shapes. Designer secret: The best photowalls always have at least one, but not more than three, non-frame items included in the mix. This adds an unexpected visual twist and creates movement. Think about using wall sculpture like big, wooden flowers, Chinese calligraphy, antique sconces, ceramic birds, or metal vintage signs. Get creative and ensure the art objects speak to your home’s décor palette and the vibe you want your wall to emulate (ie: romantic, heritage, lively, whimsical, or edgy) Step Four: Gather, edit and print your photos with the intention of showcasing an entire “picture” of your life from beginning to current – where you came from, what you went through and

A balanced mixture of solo, double and group shots will create the most dynamic collection. I personally prefer using all black and whites (easy to edit on your smartphone prior to printing) as I find it looks the classiest. Designer Secret: Have the images on the outskirts of the photo wall contain people looking ‘into’ the wall so that your eye is drawn into the center of the collection ie: the photo hung on the far right of the wall should be an image of someone (or people) looking right as if glancing towards the rest of the photowall. Don’t get hung up on picking the 100% perfect pictures – we often curate our photographs depending on the time of year, who’s visiting (nothing makes a relative or friend feel more special then seeing themselves included in your treasured photowall), and when our next great photo is taken – we switch it out! Your photowall should evolve, as your life does. Step Five: There is truly no right or wrong way to hang a gallery wall – the most important element is balance and harmony. Start with your largest frames in the center and work your way outwards. Try keeping the same amount of distance between each frame. If you’re hanging a frame directly above or beside another one – use a level and a tape measure as inaccuracy will throw the eye off and look sloppy. Don’t go too close to a baseboard or crown molding. Use chalk or kraft paper if you’re nervous about your layout or simply hire a pro – having a professional create a family ‘wall of fame’ full of precious memories and chic artwork would be the perfect Mother’s or Father’s day present for any home!

A Q&A Session with Kelsey Serwa
Gold Medal, Freestyle Skiing
I
t’s been a while since we last spoke to Kelsey Serwa. It was for our Spring 2014 edition, when Kelsey came back as a silver medal winner from the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Now, four years later, she is a proud gold medal winner - and the cover model of this edition, alongside the brand-new Audi RS 5. Well, this lady loves speed!

What does it feel like to actually BE an OLYMPIAN? How long does that feeling last? It’s an incredible feeling, becoming an Olympian and representing your country at the most historical sporting event in the World. Starting from a young age, it’s an accomplishment many amateur athletes yearn to achieve. So, to actually become an Olympian is a true honour and testament to the hard work and sacrifices made along the way. Once an Olympian, you can forever carry that title in your heart. I expect this feeling to last a lifetime. How do you manage the pressure? Does it feel like the weight of the country is on your shoulders? How do you tune that out so you can focus? I view pressure as a privilege that exists because based on past accomplishments, there is an expectation to win. I feel I have earned to right to see myself as a strong competitor, and the right for others to see me in this light as well. This season, I used the seven World Cup races preceeding the Olympic Games as an opportunity to explore a number of pre-race plans to achieve my ultimate state of focus. Every race this season was geared towards building confidence and skills, so when I was finally standing in the Olympic start gate, all I had to do was execute. What feels better? The first split second you realize you have won gold? Standing on the podium receiving your medal?... or coming home after all is said and done? I think my favorite moment was stepping on the podium, singing our Canadian National Anthem beside my good friend and teammate Britt Phelan, and having my team and family totally visible amongst a sea of people. The reality of winning
KELSEY SERWA the Olympics didn’t fully set in until that gold medal was hung around my neck. As a child and teenager did you have a secondary sport? Growing up, I participated in everything I could. I was on the basketball, volleyball, field hockey, cross-country and track & field school teams. I also competed in karate and highland dance, and had ballet, modern and jazz dance practice on the side. Weekends were dedicated to skiing at Big White, and it wasn’t until I was 15 that my focus centred more around skiing. Are Canadians well respected by other athletes, not for their athletic abilities, but for being Canadian? I feel that athletes have a common respect for one another, regardless of where they come from, simply for understanding the passion, dedication and sacrifices required to compete as one of the best in the world.
After anti-doping, media requirements, and the medal ceremonies were wrapped up, Britt and I went to Canada Olympic House where we had a private room and shared a few bottles of champagne with our family. We had been going hard since 5am and were completely wiped out, so kept celebrations mellow. It was a perfect ending to an exceptional day.
Who came to South Korea to cheer you on? My boyfriend came to Korea to surprise me a few days before the race. When I arrived in the grandstands to watch our ski cross men compete for gold, my teammate’s wife Chelsea pointed out “some guy in a red jersey”. This guy then turned around and I was shocked to see that it was Stan, big goofy smile and all! My parents, Grandpa Cliff and Nana Lois, and friends Matty S and Lauren B also made the trek across the Pacific to cheer me on. To share this entire Olympic experience with them is something I will forever hold dear to my heart.
Now that you are home, do you have some time off? Now that I am home, I’ve shifted my focus back on building the K-Ser Scholarship Fund. I have started planning our third fundraising golf tournament to be held at Gallaghers Canyon on August 24th. The KSER Scholarship Fund offers a helping hand by supporting Grade 12 studentathletes graduating in Kelowna, BC on their pursuit of excellence in athletics and academics. A Q&A Session with Justin Kripps
Gold Medal, Two-Man Bobsleigh
I
t’s not that long ago, a bit over a year actually (see ICON Okanagan Winter 2017), that Summerland’s very own Justin Kripps told us about the moment he decided to become a bobsledder. “F$%& it, I’m gonna be a bobsledder and I’m going to be the best there is.” And he did it, he is! After last year’s two-man silver at the 2017 World Championships with brakeman Jesse Lumsden, Justin just came back home as the reigning Olympic co-champion in two-man bobsleigh following his gold medal win at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with brakeman Alex Kopacz.
A big thank you to Justin for taking the time to sit down with us for this little interview.
What does it feel like to actually BE an OLYMPIAN? How long does that feeling last? Being an Olympian feels pretty special, it’s for life and you become part of the family and also a very exclusive club How do you manage the pressure? Does it feel like the weight of the country is on your shoulders? How do you tune that out so you can focus? The pressure is there and it’s very real, I’ve spent a lot of time preparing for high pressure situations and one of my strategies is to try to create that feeling in training Justin Kripps and Alexander Kopacz

or smaller races, then practice getting into my optimal headspace under those conditions. I’m really glad I did that because standing on the line for the final run leading the race by 0.06s is about as high a pressure situation I could have imagined! What feels better? The first split second you realize you have won gold? Standing on the podium receiving your medal?... or coming home after all is said and done? The moment I saw the clock and the number 1 on it is probably the most memorable moment of my life, I was
going about 130km/h when I saw it and within a few seconds we were pulling up to the most insane celebration of Canadian and German athletes, coaches and fans I’ve ever seen As a child and teenager did you have a secondary sport? I did pretty well every sport growing up, I was pretty serious about track and field and the 100m sprint but I also played basketball, tennis, volleyball and snowboarding Are Canadians well respected by other athletes, not for their athletic abilities, but for being Canadian? Absolutely, one of the best things about being on team canada is the instant respect from other athletes and people in general because they know we play fair, are polite and good sports always Who came to South Korea to cheer you on? My mom and uncles were there as well as a host of my high school buddies who I’ve heard won the cheering olympics What did you do to celebrate on the evening of your gold medal win? Actually we finished the race at about 11:30pm and by the time we were done the press conference and live Canadian TV interviews as well as doping control it was about 2:30am so we didn’t get much of a celebration other than the crazy celly right after we crossed the finish line Which do you enjoy more, opening or closing ceremonies? Opening is my favourite, everyone is full of energy and so pumped to be there it’s also the moment I get to see all the athletes from other sports I’ve become friends with over the years

The biggest trend of the season is the slide. The color for spring is blush or nude. Metallics connue to be strong as they go with anything. Embellishments are key: tassels, bows, flowers, and jewels. For heels, it is all about the chunky, stacked, block heel and wedge in all heel heights. • The spring ankle boot is an important look in perforated suede and leather. • The sport-casual “athleisure” shoes with a thick white sole. Tip to keep the white sole white: magic eraser.

Healthpoint Laser Clinic Skin Expert’s
Mission to Empower Okanagan Women Tara Graves, of Healthpoint Laser Clinic, has been working with women for many years and has always made it her mission to empower them through the beauty treatments she offers. As a former makeup artist, model and professional theatrical dancer she understands firsthand the direct connection between looking one’s best and the confidence it builds from within.
The original contest post is still up on The Ultimate Okanagan Makeover’s Facebook page, and you’ll find a long list of comments below it. The comments range from brave women telling stories of challenges they’ve overcome, struggles they’re currently facing, and others cheering on these women writing, “You deserve this! I hope you win.”
Known as Kelowna’s “Skin Magician”, Tara treats skin conditions such as rosacea, fine lines, and acne while also fixing problems with skin pigmentation, visible veins, and scars. There is no shortage of lasers and other tools to use as her magic wands. The results from treatments, such as the clinic’s exclusive 5D Facelift, have been amazing her clients for years as well as taking years off the appearance of their skin. In August, Tara decided to take the mini makeovers she accomplishes every day in her clinic to a whole new level. She handpicked local businesses to collaborate on a unique project she named The Ultimate Okanagan Makeover. As the group came together, the prize package quickly reached a value of over $5,000. The final prize package included:
Laser facelift by Healthpoint Laser Clinic | Makeup, hair, brows, lashes and nails by Xccessorize.Me | Photography by Sarah Beebe Photography | Teeth whitening and dental exam by Landmark Dental | Wardrobe by Mavazi Apparel | Organic Spray Tanning by Boho Glow | Food and drinks for the Live Reveal party provided by Basil & Mint Restaurant | Professional videos and interviews by Leanne Allen, Culture Vulture TV
There was no hesitation by the businesses approached to collaborate on this makeover project, recognizing that Tara was on a mission to give one lucky winner the chance to look, and more importantly, feel her best. The contest was launched on Facebook at the beginning of September and entries rapidly poured in before the October draw date. At the Live Reveal Party held in November, winner Yvette Moore said, “I was over the moon to have won The Ultimate Okanagan Makeover. What a dream come true! My month was filled with pampering and primping. I felt like a princess! Thank you to all the sponsors for making me feel and look like a million!”

Improve Your Chin and Re-Define Your Jawline
S
Submental fullness, aka a double chin, can make you look older and heavier. It is simply excess fat under the chin – sometimes made worse by ageing and lax facial skin (eg cheeks / jowls). According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly as many adults are bothered by their double chin (67%) as by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (69%). It can be very difficult to get rid of on your own, because submental fullness can be influenced by multiple factors – such as genetics, weight gain and aging – sometimes, no matter how much you diet the fat in this area may not go away. Unfortunately, there is no home remedies, creams or exercise regimes to lose the fat under your chin. Non-surgical treatment options (that Health Canada and the FDA approve) are available that target and eliminate fat under the chin are Belkyra™ and CoolSculpting®.
CoolSculpting is another option, especially for larger fat deposits. CoolSculpting is an interesting technology that involves no needles or scalpels – it freezes the fat away. Seriously cool. Using a device that targets just the fat cells, CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to crystallize them. These fat cells gradually die off, then are naturally eliminated from the body over the next several weeks. CoolSculpting Mini treatments start around $700, and a typical patient may require two treatments. There is little-to-no discomfort or down-time, and treatment takes about an hour. With either, long lasting effects are normal. Procedures are customized to each patient to achieve their treatment goals, and once they are achieved, re‐ treatment is not expected.
“Unfortunately, there is no home remedies, creams or exercise regimes to lose the fat under your chin.” Non-surgical treatment options are Belkyra™ and CoolSculpting®.”
Belkyra (aka Kybella in the USA) is made by Allergan, the producers of BOTOX and Juvederm HA fillers. This is a quick and easy injectable treatment that can be completed in the clinic in 15 to 20 minutes. The treatment’s main ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule identical to the ones produced in the gallbladder that aid in the digestion and absorption of fat. With targeted injections into the submental fat, the fat cells break open. Then, the body does its normal and continual cycle of getting rid of old and damaged cells. Once destroyed and flushed out, the cells can no longer accumulate fat. Belkyra treatment starts at around $1,400, depending on dosage. Most patients will need two to four treatments. Side effects include swelling, bruising, pain and numbness, all which typically subside within days; results then start to appear after several weeks.
There is real interest among male patients, who frankly may not care as much about weathered skin or wrinkles – but who are annoyed or even embarrassed by a double chin. Treating the double chin was largely ignored until recently because we simply didn’t have many good choices. Now with CoolSculpting Mini technology and Belkyra we have some great options for re-defining the jawline.
If you are one of many who are bothered by a double chin, there are now at least two non-surgical options that might be right for you. Consult with a physician and cosmetic medical expert for the options that are right for you to put your best chin forward.

The Lady
by Kristine Jones
Be the woman a gentleman adores....
The Secret to Awesome Krafty Dinner Kids don’t always want mom’s advice, nor do they always “listen” to the words of wisdom that come from Mom. I put “listen” into quotations because I think kids really do listen to what parents have to say, they just don’t always choose to acknowledge that it’s been soaked up by their ever impressionable minds. My mom has given me the some of the most amazing advice. She has also given me the most whacked advice, for example: make sure I am always wearing clean undies, just in case I’m ever in an accident. Or to always travel with blankets just in case we swerve off the road. So now I have an abundance of clean underwear and travel with a king-size duvet. My mom is amazing, the most selfless woman I will ever know. Not only did she raise me, but the day she found out I was pregnant also ended up being her last day of work. Ever. Sorry dad. These days I find myself being the one giving my own daughter the whacked advice and hopefully some good advice sneaks in there too. Who knows if it’s perfect, but here’s what I tell Savannah… Blame Mom Getting pressured from friends to hang out but you just feel like snuggling up with mom and watching Pitch Perfect 3 with a bag of Lays? Call mom, ask the question, pause for a moment... then start to argue with mom – act upset. Eventually I’ll catch on and read between the lines… it’s an easy out that is okay to use here and there. Hold a beer Find yourself in a situation with alcohol and you don’t want to be razzed for drinking water all night? Or you don’t want to get out of control, but you’re making the choice to participate? Try this: No hard alcohol. Grab one beer and hold the beer all evening. At a party, no one will even notice if you randomly ditch your beer and grab a fresh one just to appear like you’re drinking. I still do this. Except for that one time... Hugs and handshakes Never feel like you have to hug someone. Not everyone needs to be a hugger; but do learn a solid and confident handshake. Whether you’re meeting someone for the first time or getting written up at your first job, a handshake is courteous and respectful. There’s obviously nothing wrong with hugs, I do it all the time, but I do regret telling my kids to hug people when I thought they should. Genuine eye contact can be just as meaningful as a hug, don’t be afraid to connect using your eyes.
PG posting Some may think it’s too invasive, but I know my daughter’s password for her iPod and randomly check her messages. It’s an openness we share, she is well-aware of it. Savannah also knows that I’m going to offer up advice on how or why something she said via text could be perceived differently than what she means. Other times I explain why some conversations are best face to face. I always say to Savannah... “Never share what you would be ashamed of if mom and grandma see it and read it.” Kraft Dinner Always know how to make awesome Kraft Dinner. That means… add milk AND butter. You can’t go wrong when you make it that way. Only buy it on sale; it always goes on sale. Respect courage When it comes to boys, don’t lead them on and don’t give false hope - it’s not fair. Respect a boy for the courage it takes to approach a girl, but never play games or embarrass the boy who has genuinely expressed interest in you. It takes a lot of courage to be a gentleman and only one mean girl to knock a gentleman down. Use eye contact and say thank you when a man opens a door for you – chivalry is not dead. Take a compliment There is absolutely nothing wrong with grinning ear to ear and saying THANK YOU when given a compliment. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable being on the receiving end of a compliment, and that’s okay… but chin up, appreciate that someone took the time to appreciate you, and wait for the best time to pay it forward to someone else. Every parent has their own opinions, every parent is entitled to their own ways of raising their kids. These are just a few of the words of advice that stay consistent within my inconsistent parenting… and I’m sure the only part of this article that we can all agree on is that KD tastes better with milk and butter;) Until next time… Kristine Kristine Jones ~ From a Thirties Girl Twitter @whitedaisies14 Facebook: Kristine Jones One day I’ll learn that Snap Chat thing. But that can be my 2018 resolution…

EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY
by Steve MacNaull
BEST IN THE WORLD
ProWein
An Okanagan Chardonnay has once again beat the French at their own game. The Chardonnay du Monde competition is held annually in France’s Burgundy region, which also happens to be the birthplace of Chardonnay and traditionally where the best bottles of the world’s most popular varietal are made.
Ten Okanagan wineries showcased vintages at the ProWein 2018 international trade fair in Dusseldorf, Germany.
However, this year, the 2016 Reserve Chardonnay ($42) from Liquidity Winery in Okanagan Falls was ranked No. 1 in the world of the 679 entered in the contest from 39 countries. Liquidity is ecstatic with the wine’s win. The winery knew the 2016 vintage was exceptional, that’s why it entered the competition. But to come away with the ultimate prize is an astonishing dream come true. The champion chard was crafted by Liquidity winemaker Alison Moyes from estate grown grapes off 26-year-old vines. The ferment saw 25 per cent aging in new barrels for concentrated and elegant, but not overwhelming, aromas and flavours influenced by oak. The fruit and treatment results in a complex wine with aromas of toasted almond, pear, peach and liquorice and flavours of lemon curd, pineapple and hazelnuts with a creamy mouthfeel and bright acidity.
ProWein is the world’s largest gathering of viticulture, winery, supplier, restaurant and wine media professionals with about 58,000 of them annually descending on Dusseldorf. Canada had its largest presence ever at this year’s ProWein with a pavilion pouring samples of more than 100 wines from 29 wineries British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia wineries. The 10 Okanagan wineries are: 50th Parallel, Bench 1775, Gold Hill, Jackson-Triggs, Mission Hill, Okanagan Crush Pad, Painted Rock, Poplar Grove, Quails’ Gate and Wild Goose. Besides the tastings, Canadian representatives also put on educational sessions showcasing our cool-climate sparkling wines, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The overall theme was: Canada may be a small producer by global standards, but what it produces is world-class.
It’s a shame more people won’t get a chance to drink the world’s finest. A limited amount of this chard was made and it will be offered first to members of Liquidity’s wine club. Any what’s left over will go on sale in July only at the winery’s shop. The No. 2 wine at this year’s Chardonnay de Monde is also from the Okanagan. The 2016 Chardonnay Icewine ($80 for a 375 ml bottle) from Kalala Organic marks the fourth time a sweet dessert wine from the West Kelowna wine has placed in the top 10. It offers up aromas and flavours of honeysuckle, lemon meringue, candied orange peel, apricot and pear. In 2016, Kalala’s Chardonnay Icewine also shocked the wine world when it was ranked No. 1. Five other Okanagan wines medalled at Chardonnay de Monde this year. The top 10 list, which was actually 13 wines due to some ties, also consisted of seven chards from France and one each from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Argentina and Brazil. Nk’Mip Winery in Oliver picked up gold for its 2016 Qwam Qwmt Chardonnay ($25), a butterscotch on the nose and citrus and pear on the tongue interpretation of the varietal. Silver medals went to Oliver’s Tinhorn Creek 2016 Chardonnary ($19.50), the 2016 Chardonnay ($23) from Quails’ Gate in West Kelowna, Oliver’s Inniskillin Dark Horse Vineyard 2016 Chardonnay ($35) and the C.C. Jentsch Small Lots Series 2016 Chardonnay ($36) in Oliver.

CHEF BETH ROSS “ I believe that if you’re happy, your food will be happy, too,” By DAVID TRIFUNOV
A FRESH APPROACH Kelowna chef Beth Ross needed a fresh approach to her career. After 3 ½ years as an executive sous chef at one of Kelowna’s finest hotels, Ross decided it was time to pursue something she’s always dreamed of doing. It’s why, in March of this year, Ross launched her own Appetite Catering in the Central Okanagan. “I’m ready for it now,” said Ross, 32. Catering comes with a greater connection to her customers. When she meets them, she gets a better understanding of what they want and what they need. She can tailor her menu accordingly. “I really enjoy that style of cooking and that part of the industry,” she said. “This is a different kind of pace. … I want to get to know the client and customize their menu toward what they want.” Ross doesn’t want to say she’s “happier” now—because she’s always enjoyed her job—but she will admit to having an energy that’s bound to produce memorable results. “I believe that if you’re happy, your food will be happy, too,” she says with a
laugh. “Does that make sense? I don’t ever want to cook angrily.” After all, it’s the connection between food and people that got Ross started. She had planned to enter social work after graduating high school in Abbotsford. Before taking that path, however, she decided to work overseas as a nanny for a short period of time. It was there she would cook for her host family to much praise and applause. It reminded her of cooking at home with her mom. She loved coming home after school and preparing dinner for her family, too. “When I cook for myself, it’s not as much fun,” she said. “It’s exciting to develop a meal and have people enjoy that experience with you. It makes me happy to cook for people.”

What We Love About The Okanagan
Insider information is everything! This issue we speak to Lenetta Parry, Executive Director for the Central Okanagan Food Bank, about some of her favourite things to do in the Okanagan.
1
Kasugai Gardens: This is my favourite place to take visitors; it is one of the most unique parks around, featuring Japanese inspired trees, stone paths, waterfalls and a pond stocked with koi. My guests always leave impressed and relaxed!
2
Earthly Creations: I love to shop at Earthly Creations on Pandosy. Marie has a magical store full of unique, handmade gifts, local art, and she makes the most amazing floral arrangements!
Edited by Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie.
3
19 Okanagan Grill + Bar: Located at Two Eagles Golf Course in West Kelowna, this is one of my favourite places to eat. Whether it is for lunch, dinner or a drink on their patio, 19 Okanagan Grill + Bar never disappoints. They have great food, a great wine list and great service.
4
Summer Favourites: I love anything that has to do with water – swimming, boating, a beach day at the Gellatly Nut Farm and looking for Ogopogo!
56
Westside Daze: This is a free, family festival that includes such things as a parade, kids’ fair, fireworks and live evening concerts. Westside Daze is held annually on the weekend closest to Canada Day with most events taking place at the Johnson Bentley Pool Memorial Park in West Kelowna. It’s my favourite Okanagan festival.
Whiski-Jack’s Pub: Whether you are looking to eat, drink, listen to live music, meet new people or give back to the community through one of their many fund-raisers, this is the pub to be at!
8
Blenz Coffee in Westbank: Now here’s the funny thing, I don’t actually drink coffee but I do have a favourite coffee shop! It’s cozy, friendly and they make a delicious chai tea latte!

Coleman Style Hair: Coleman Patterson is the only one that cuts and styles my hair. Hair is his passion. He always makes his customers smile and feel beautiful!
9
Drive to Osoyoos: Me and my hubby love driving south to Osoyoos, visiting the Blind Angler in Peachland, fruit stands, wineries and of course, Tickleberry’s, along the way. While in Osoyoos we never miss the opportunity to visit the Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad. It is a world class miniature wonderland and a MUST see!
Shannon Lake Regional Park: I love being here with my family. This park has a great little walking trail, picnic tables, a dock to fish from, plus lots of turtles, birds and natural beauty!
Smack Dab: This is my favourite patio because it is located beside the water and has the most amazing view of Okanagan Lake.
