PUBLISHER’S LETTER ‘

The Good ol Times! Bringing back the 1950s... Bill Haley and His Comets played ”Rock Around the Clock.” Elvis Presley rose to stardom swiveling his hips and shaking his legs. Hollywood had James Dean and introduced CinemaScope and Cinerama and by 1955, about half of all US households, had television. It was the time of the Chevrolet Bel Air convertible, the Nash Cosmopolitan and the Studebaker. And the time of some hilarious ads, where husbands were mowing lawns, while wives were vacuuming in high heels (we should actually get back to that! Just saying’ ...).

Olaf Robrecht

Today, almost 70 years later, we still celebrate that era. “Retro” is totally in ... from cars to clothing, accessories to furniture. And so we came up with this idea of ‘bringing back the good old times.’ Some fun fashion photo shoots with some pretty cool cars and Airstreams, a shopping spree for the coolest retro gadgets and more. We hope you like it! And while we were working on this edition we actually came up with another cool idea ... but that’s for the next issue. Have a fantastic summer. Enjoy all of what the Okanagan has to offer - it’is the best time of the year! See you around ... and we will be back with our Fall edition in late September!

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOON LANDING - JULY 20, 1969

1969

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke those words as roughly six hundred million people watched on television when he became the first person to set foot on the moon. Apollo-11 launched from Cape Canaveral on July 16, 1969 with Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins onboard, and 4 days later Armstrong and Aldrin spent twenty-one hours and thirty minutes on the moon. The moon landing effectively ended the “Space Race,” which began twelve years earlier when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik-1.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF TIC TAC

First introduced as Refreshing Mints, these tiny candies were renamed Tic Tac the following year. The name comes from the sound of the teeny container being opened and closed. Even now, they’re an essential breath freshener in pockets and purses everywhere.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CAESAR

The Caesar is attributed to barman Walter Chell, who came up with the drink at the Calgary Inn back in 1969. Did you know National Caesar Day falls each year on the Thursday before the May 2-4 long weekend!

1969 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EASY RIDER

In July of 1969, the cinematic landscape would forever be altered with the release of the seminal independent film Easy Rider. The “road picture” – starring legends such as Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson – sparked a new way to produce films that would turn Hollywood on its ear. Set to the sounds of a blistering soundtrack, Fonda (Captain America) and Hopper (Billy) make their way across America on a pair of customized Harley-Davidson motorcycles – hardtail Harley-Davidson Panheads that have become as famous as the movie itself – to look for America, but “couldn’t find it anywhere.”

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOODSTOCK - AUGUST 15-18, 1969

Woodstock was a music festival held between August 15–18, 1969, which attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music”, it was held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm near White Lake in Bethel, New York, 43 miles southwest of Woodstock.

1969 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF SESAME STREET - NOV 10, 1969

The American educational children’s television series premiered on November 10, 1969. Combining live action, sketch comedy, animation and puppetry, producers and writers used, for the first time, educational goals and a curriculum to shape its content. Sesame Street was by then the 15th-highest-rated children’s television show in the United States. A 1996 survey found that 95% of all American preschoolers had watched the show by the time they were three years old. In 2018, it was estimated that 86 million Americans had watched the series as children. As of 2018, Sesame Street has won 189 Emmy Awards and 11 Grammy Awards, more than any other children’s show.

1955 Ford Crown Victoria (Skyliner) Owners: Paul and Joyce Richter

“In the summer of 1992 I took my wife Joyce to see our 55 even though I thought the price was more than we could afford. Then we heard this deep rumble as the owner drove her into the driveway. We fell in love as she sat there glistening in the sun with pipes rumbling. When my wife said: “What are you waiting for?” I knew at that moment that this baby, whom we named “Vicky”, was going to be part of our family, as I gladly went off to the bank to take out a loan. Vicky was assembled in San Jose, California on January 22, 1955, one of 1999 produced with the transparent roof insert as an option. Other factory options included power steering, power windows, power seat and Fordamatic transmission - just to name a few. Vicky has been restored to original and has really done us proud over the years winning many trophies and plaques, especially being chosen for the best glass top category at the Crown Victoria regional meet in Kirkland, Washington in August 2001, and also won the 50’s Stock category at the 2005 Peach City Beach Cruise in Penticton.” Location: Antlers Beach, Peachland. The Photoshoot... Relax if you can, and have fun. That is my formula for a successful photo shoot. Sure, you have to prepare for the unexpected (weather is a thing) but if you have the right team, you are 99% there, no matter what happens. For this edition, the two key components were pin up style clothes and classic cars. From there, my team was built over time. I started out with colleagues and ended up with what felt like, extended family. It was SUCH a great group of people, I had to write something to formally acknowledge them. Kat at Pinned Boutique and Lola from HITZ Boutique were so FABULOUS right out of the gate. They went above and beyond in their commitment to ensuring every model looked their best in their clothing. Lola even came out on the photoshoot day with props and accessories and ended up being my right hand lady. When you try on pin up/vintage clothing, you feel as though you are stepping into a new era (whether you were actually there or not) and it was so much fun to see each model light up when they put their outfits on. The amount of attention they got walking downtown was very heartwarming. It confirmed that I wasn’t the only one thinking a step back in time was a pretty cool thing to see, even for just a moment. The style team was exceptional and my crew of support staff were on point. I am so grateful for each and everyone one of you. And the models? I was so blessed to have the opportunity to work with these girls. Each one so smart, helpful, energetic, talented and of course, incredibly beautiful. So much so, you would never know professional modeling was not their main gig. By the end of the day we were all exhausted but so satisfied and honestly, a little sad that it was over. Don’t be surprised if you see them again in another issue.

Lastly, a HUGE shout out to Jacques Lefebvre, President of Apple Valley Cruisers. He really made my life easy when he committed to being my point man for the classic cars. I can’t imagine this shoot without his assistance and really couldn’t thank him enough. Each car and car owner brought its own personality and it was a real pleasure to get to know each of them. It’s definitely a club I’d love to belong to one day.

Candy Brandy Wine 1949 Mercury Owners: Jim and Dorothy McKelvey (Members of Apple Valley Cruisers)

Jim has had a passion for cars since he was 12 years old. His dad gave him a 1938 Ford when he started driving. He has always had at least two cars at any one time. One to drive and the other to work on as a hobby. They acquired this 1949 Mercury 9 years ago from a friend in Delbourne Alberta, trading in his 1951 Mercury for this one. It took two years to restore. Jim did the fabrication work himself and installed a Ford Photo: Colin Rose

1957 Chev Sedan Delivery Wagon Owner: Jim Way (Member of Apple Valley Cruisers)

Jim has had this vehicle for the last four years. It has a Chevy 350 Motor, a/c, disc brakes and an automatic transmission. Jim has enjoyed putting hundreds of hours into this car, making it his own. The attraction to this model started with what it represented; the appeal of the U.S. surfing culture of the 60’s. The Beach Boys, the hot rods, the girls and the surf boards. For Jim, nothing was better than that.

1967 Chevy Nova

Owner: Robert Kelly (Member of Apple Valley Cruisers) This 1967 Red Chevy Nova became Robert’s in 1984. It has since won a first place trophy at the Chesaw Washington car show in August of 2014. Robert most enjoys driving it around on a sunny day with all the windows down, and who can blame him.

1964 Chevy C10 Shortbox Stepside A True Story ... In 1993 my house in Rutland burnt down. We were up at Big White skiing, and at the end of our day, we were trying to reach our eldest daughter, but the line just kept ringing busy. After a couple hours we were starting to get concerned, but it was a teenager that we were trying to reach, and spending hours on the landline phone wasn’t unheard of. We then called a neighbor and they told us we needed to get home immediately that our house was engulfed in flames. Thinking about what our security system offers now, we could have been alerted immediately and been down the hill much sooner, because we would have known there was a fire from our interactive alarm system. We could have accessed our camera system and seen what was going on and possibly even prevented some of the damage that occurred. By the way - our daughter was actually not at home and was safe at her friends. The story doesn’t end there! At the time of the fire, there happened to be a ball team practicing in the school yard behind our yard. They noticed

the smoke, called 911 then jumped into action, literally. They jumped the fence and tried to access the back the house because they didn’t know if anyone was home. They went around to the front of the house and kicked in the front door. Noticing there wasn’t anyone responding, they still grabbed an autographed Gordie Howe plate and got out of the house quickly. When they spotted my 1964 Chev Pickup (featured above) in an attached car port, they pushed it out to safety. I never met those awesome people to properly thank them for saving 2 of my favorite non replaceable belongings but mostly for risking their own safety to possibly save what mattered most, my family. Now I am in the business of bringing home security technology to your household, so that you can leave feeling confident that you can still keep a watchful eye on your home from afar. -- Paul Lenz

GPS TRACKING KEY

BUSHNELL NIGHT VISION

Good for monitoring the driving habits and routes of your employees with company vehicles, or teenagers with personal cars, the LandAirSea GPS Tracking Key is easy to use. Just insert the batteries and attach to your vehicle. After you retrieve it, the location data stored on the GPS Tracking Key can be accessed by inserting the device directly into your PC or laptop via a USB port. The information recorded by the GPS Tracking Key can then be viewed as a written activity/text report; displayed over a digital street map; or – the most popular option – displayed over a satellite image on Google Earth.

No telling how you’ll react when faced with what lurks after dark, but with Bushnell Night Vision, time will never again dictate your hours of operation. These optics turn night into day with built-in infrared illuminators and advanced lightgathering technology. The entire lineup is perfect for camping, caving, wildlife observation, surveillance – any time or place you think you’re ready.

The APPLE VALLEY CRUISERS “We started this club in 2005 with a car show in a Church parking lot with 20-30 vehicles. It then grew to closing down Main Street Summerland and so we moved to Memorial Park. When I joined there were 30 members and now we are over 100 members and growing. We support local businesses by having monthly meetings in one of three local restaurants and have our own Endless Summer Show And Shine in Memorial Park in September, where all proceeds go to local charities in the area, we also meet at Summerland DQ every Thursday evening 6-8 for a mini car show from May to September. To join our club all you need is to be a car enthusiast! We have anything from a 1935 Dodge to a 2014 Mercedes Amg/SLS gull wing. FYI A family membership is only $25.00 to join. “ - Jacques Levebvre, President

The Westside Celebration Society presents

Canadian Grand Prix of CycleKarts July 12-14, Westside Daze

CycleKart Grand Prix’s are held around the world and this will be the First Grand Prix held in Canada. Drivers must create their own cars, modeled in a Classic or Antique vehicle style and the owner may only spend a maximum of two thousand dollars in building their vehicle.

Drag Race Exhibition 2:00 - 4:30 pm Exhibition of two CycleKarts running in a straight line for 100 meters on a paved street. Safety gear will be required from participants. Speed will be less that 27KPH

These tiny vehicles are small, lightweight, nimble and made by their drivers for the pursuit of motoring sport. The fun aspect is that the participants don’t take winning seriously however, safety has the highest consideration - they just want to have fun and maintain good sporting performances without jeopardizing the light hearted nature of the machines. In fact, overzealousness is frowned upon and a win at any cost attitude is not encouraged.

Gymkhana Friday 7:00 - 8:30 This is a slow speed Drivers Challenge, designed to showcase the driver and CycleKarts ability to maneuver a pre laid course in paved parking lot. Fun for both drivers and spectators. Speed is less than 10 KPH

Westside Daze, with sponsor support from Westridge Center, are thrilled to provide and host the following events on Saturday July 13: CycleKart Show at 10 am to noon, during the Westside Daze parade, which will feature the registered CycleKarts for the entire family to view with No Cost to attend Canadian Grand Prix Race 12:30 - 2:00 pm Simulation of a 1920’s European Grand Prix where CycleKarts will drive around a course laid out on paved streets. Speeds run less than 30 KPH for this simulation. Drivers will be required to have all safety gear necessary for this event.

Gravity Race Simulation 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm This event will be a simulation of “Soap Box Derby” gravity racing where two CycleKarts will run head to head with their drive Canins removed and no motors running. Speeds will not reach 35KMP and length depends on the hill. For the full schedule of events please go to www.westsidedaze.com

THE

Silver Bullet THE HISTORY OF THE AIRSTREAM TRAILER

The story of the Airstream started with Wally Byam, born in 1896, who grew up living in a wooden wagon on a sheep farm. The wagon was towed by a donkey, and had a stove, food, water and everything he needed, which would later inspire his first trailer. Later, in 1931, he started a small trailer factory in Culver City, California. This was Airstream’s first factory, and the Airstream dream was born. Over the years, the trailers received many new upgrades. In 1954, Airstream introduced the first hot water system ever in a trailer, and by 1958 the Airstream International became the first ever self-contained travel trailer. The history of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International started in 1955 when Wally travelled to Europe in a one of a kind Airstream. This was the inspiration for Wally to form the WBCCI. Today it flourishes

throughout North American, Canada and Europe with thousands of members enjoying each other’s company at rallies throughout 12 regions in North America and more in Europe. After battling cancer, Wally Byam passed away in 1962. Two of the former Airstream presidents took over the company and introduced the first major redesign in over 30 years. With internal as well as exterior facelifts and structural changes, the end result was an Airstream with rounder edges and the distinctive “silver bullet” shape.

made. The profile, structure, and shape were altered and resulted in a larger, more comfortable travel trailer, while still retaining the performance and the classic design. Upon the celebration of the 75th birthday of Airstream in 2006, fully 65% of the Airstreams that had been built were still on the road. In 2018 Airstream started construction on their new plant in Jackson Center, Ohio which will cover 750,000 square feet. --------

Around 1979 Airstream closed its California factory and relocated all production to Jackson Center, Ohio. It was the world’s most modern trailer manufacturing facility, covering 150,000 square feet in total.

THE HISTORY OF THE

P

PIN-UP

Pin-up art has its origins in the Golden Age of Illustration which corresponds with the late 1800s and early 1900s, and many artists participated in the genre. It started with paintings, drawings, and illustrations that feature women for both fashion magazines and postcards but the actual term was first used in 1941 for pictures representing glamour girls, models, and actresses in sensual or erotic poses, and referred to the act of “pinning up” the art to the wall. The postcards and magazines became immensely popular with WWI soldiers , who hung the mass-produced images in bunkers or lockers. The images captured the era’s ideals of beauty and sexiness, with hourglass figures in sexy clothing, flared up skirts and behind closed doors scenes. Compared to earlier pin-up art, the pin-up girls of the WWII era were shown more provocatively and their sexuality was more explicit, yet still in the main stream. The most photographed pin-up girls of the 1940s were Rita Hayworth, Hedy Lamarr, Ava Gardner, and Betty Grable, whereas Charles Dana Gibson and Alberto Vargas were representatives of the first generation of pin-up artists. They laid the foundation for what would become a blossoming art-genre in post-war America. Pin-up art continued into the mid to late 1950s but soon the artistically rendered illustrations had to give way to photography and mass-produced posters. The artwork of pin-up art’s most famous artists, including Al Buell, Gil Elvgren, Art Frahm, Earl Moran, and Bill Medcalf, is today a testament to the styles of the era

and an important reflection of the cultural past. Bettie Page The Queen of the Pin-ups, the Dark Angel, and the Queen of Curves, Bettie Page was considered to be “so perfect it is hard to take a bad picture of her.” It

was a police officer in New York, who turned out to be an amateur photographer, who saw her potential and recommended her to a friend who ran a photography club and held classes in photography as part of the YMCA after-school program. Soon a number of professional photographers spotted the girl with the jet black hair, the popular fringe, piercingly blue eyes, and the athletic and voluptuous figure. Bettie Page stood out from other models and before she knew it, she was the centerfold of the Christmas edition of Playboy in 1955. The rest is history ... and still today, she inspires many artists such as Olivia De Berardinis. Betty Boop Betty Boop, the flirtatious, seductive cartoon character of 1930s with her big eyes and long eyelashes, is regarded as one of the first and most famous sex symbols on the animated screen. She originally appeared in many animated short films and was later featured in comic strips and mass merchandising and

became one of the best-known and popular cartoon characters in the world. The last Betty Boop cartoons were released in 1939 but the iconic character never really disappeared. Nose Art The inscription of artwork on military planes dates back to World War I, when paintings were usually extravagant company or unit insignia. As the United States entered World War II, nose art returned as a morale booster, using pin-ups as a dominant theme on the noses of WWII bombers and fighters. Artists often mimicked Vargasstyle “fantasy girl” pinup art on the military aircraft they painted, making WWII the golden age of aircraft artistry. The work was done by both professional civilian artists and talented amateur artists serving in the army; they were in very high demand and were paid well for their services. Even today, the fascination continues, with a number of artists and studios creating reproductions or take-offs on some of the favorite classics of WWII.

BETTY PAGE by OLIVIA Olivia deBerardinis’ paintings and drawings of Bettie Page, new and old, are lovingly presented in this hardcover book by Ozone Productions, Ltd. Iconic pinup queen Bettie Page is painted in Olivia’s ever changing styles, and ever evolving techniques. Foreward by High Hefner, interview with Bettie, and comments by Olivia. 80 pages hardbound, sewn, with dustjacket.

FAKE TAN? GENUINELY BETTER!

By Dr. Janna Bentley

SUN SCREEN & DAMAGE: OKANAGAN SUN

With summer arriving in the sunny Okanagan, the question of tanning – and how much of a tan is safe – often arises. Unfortunately a tan reflects damaged skin cells. The DNA inside of the cells has already mutated by the time a tan appears, and therefore no amount of tan is safe. Getting a base tan is similar to the analogy of closing the gate after the horses are out. It’s too late at that point. Damaged skin cells lead to wrinkles, sun spots, and skin cancer. What should we do then? Tanning beds are not safe – they are at least as dangerous for your skin as the real sun. They are likely more dangerous because people have the misperception that they are somehow safer and use them more carelessly. We’re still stuck then. Most people think that a healthy glow to your skin looks attractive. No one wants to be pasty white all summer. What then? The best option for a tan is from a bottle. There are good quality products on the market now that don’t streak orange or smell. Self-tanning products have been around in some form or other since the invention of cosmetics. In 1960, Coppertone introduced its first sunless tanning product – QT® or Quick Tanning Lotion – but it produced an overall orange effect. Today’s sunless tanning products achieve much better results. Tanning pills, cosmetic bronzers, and sunless-tanning or selftanning lotions and sprays are available to impart a subtle bronze glow or a deep, dark tan. Although sunless tanning products can yield a golden glow, they do not protect the skin from the ultraviolet radiation in the sun’s rays the way melanin in a ‘real’ tan does, so users of sunless tanning products still need to apply sunscreen before venturing out in the sun.

upper layer of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, a color change occurs and lasts a week. Examples: quality tanning products are St. Tropez sunless tanners, which don’t turn your skin orange. TANNING FROM THE INSIDE Tanning Pills: Tanning pills typically contain the pigment canthaxanthin. Although the FDA has approved the use of canthaxanthin as a color additive in food, it has not approved its use as a tanning agent. Canthaxanthin-based tanning pills have been linked to dangerous side effects, including hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and canthaxanthin retinopathy (formation of yellow deposits in the retina of the eye). Tanning Accelerators: Most tanning accelerators are lotions or pills that contain the amino acid tyrosine. Makers of these products believe that the tyrosine stimulates and increases melanin formation, accelerating the natural tanning process.

WHY DO TANS FADE?

Skin takes a lot of wear and tear, so it naturally regenerates itself. Every 35-45 days the outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, is completely replaced. Since skin pigment is found in this upper layer, any natural or added pigment will be sloughed away in about one month’s time. This is why natural tans fade and why many self-tanning products recommend you re-apply the product every few days to maintain your tan. Parting advice? As you’ve heard before: “Wear sunscreen.” Forget a real tan – your skin will thank you later.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

TANNING ON THE OUTSIDE Bronzers: Cosmetic bronzers produce immediate effects that can be easily removed with soap and water. Essentially a form of make-up, since the tint only lasts until it is washed off. Tanning Lotions and Sprays: Perhaps the most effective sunless tanning products are lotions and sprays containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the

The Lady

by Kristine Jones

Be the woman a gentleman adores....

THE

GOOD WIFE’S

GUIDE

In celebration of our cool retro themed issue I thought it would be fun to pick out some tips for wives from 1955 and compare them to the life of a wife and mom in 2019. You may have seen this one floating around Facebook, it is called The Good Wife’s Guide from Housekeeping Monthly. While not copied exactly, I’ve chosen a few that got me thinking and made me realize just how much things have changed since back then. Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before. Have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. Does ordering Skip the Dishes count as having a delicious meal ready? Let’s be real, sitting down for a family dinner is desirable; however, not always possible. These days with both spouses working and involved in activities, it’s almost impossible to have a gourmet sit-down meal seven days a week. In fact, just this week I found myself researching meal delivery companies to help keep us on track. It’s not that I don’t want our family to eat healthy home-cooked meals, it’s truly just that once the busy day is done the last thing on my mind is cooking dinner and cleaning up the mess at 8pm. Part of what we need to do is stop feeling guilty about it. As long as there’s a couple of nights a week that everyone sits down to a family meal, we’re doing quite alright friends. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. There’s no time to rest before your spouse comes home. That last fifteeen minutes is spent plowing through lastminute chores, not watching Ellen and sipping green tea. By the time my man walks through the door I smell like Windex and have a sweaty glow from racing around the house picking up dirty socks and wiping fingerprints off of EVERYTHING. In all seriousness, the fifteen minutes is a great idea – but how about we take it together? Be a little more interesting for him. His day may be boring and may need a lift and it is one of your duties to provide it. With work demands and extra-curricular activities, the last thing my guy wants me

to do when he gets home is to engage in deep conversation. If anything the poor guy just wants ten minutes to himself before we settle into asking about each other’s workday. Perhaps it isn’t too far off base to suggest that we put effort into engaging in interesting conversation, but I think it’s a two-way street and the responsibility of both spouses to keep things spicy. One of my most prominent childhood memories is of my mom and dad having tea together after supper. They did it after evert sit-down meal and it was made clear to my brother and I that we were not to interrupt their alone-time. Clear away clutter. Make one last trip through the house just before your husband arrives. That just means clearing the seven pairs of shoes away from the door, right? If there’s no time to make dinner and no time to rest for fifteen minutes, clearly there is no time to tidy up the clutter around the house every day. All that said, if the kids are old enough, there is no harm in asking them to put their stuff away. The kids should play a big role in keeping the family afloat. I’m one of those people that gets a cluttered mind in a cluttered space so my only recommendation for spouses feeling the same way is to sell and donate constantly – it helps! Minimize all noise before the time of his arrival. Encourage the children to be quiet. Being alone with our own thoughts? Yeah, no thanks! In 1955, Siri and Alexa didn’t exist. In 1955, SONOS wasn’t blasting through the house, and you didn’t come home to the sound of your kids playing Fornite online with friends down the road. Not only is life busier, but it’s also louder. I’ve never once had my man come home and not look forward to being greeted by happy kids. If anything, he’s the one wanting to play. When it comes to noise, one thing I’ll do before my guy’s arrival is make sure that the music streaming is a station we both like... the country channel never seems to impress him. (Not sure why?! Love me some Thomas Rhett and Lady A) Don’t greet him with complaints and problems. Out of all of the tips from 1955 this Summer 2019

is the one that I fully agree with and try to follow. It’s nice to take a few minutes together before dropping the challenges from the day on each other. When your spouse is also your best friend, it’s easy to get caught up in sharing what went wrong instead of what went right. Personally, I try to get through three open-ended questions before even dropping the bombs that the dishwasher broke, the property taxes are due and the vehicle needs an oil change. Could this be what mom and dad talked about at tea time?! Hmm… Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice. How does one arrange a pillow? Prop it up? Fluff it up? I’m not too sure what that even means but the pillow is fine and he can take his own shoes off. Also, maybe in a low, soothing voice I’d ask for the garbage to be taken out. I feel like this tip is really not about taking his shoes off or arranging a pillow, it’s about remembering to do random acts of kindness for each other. The good news is that even sending a thoughtful text in the middle of the day can be enough to make the other person feel warm and fuzzy about coming home. Life is just plain busy today. Dads rock out the vacuum, coach sports, and know their way around the grocery store. Moms often work outside of the house, know how to use the BBQ, and squeeze in volunteering at school. Even my girlfriends who choose to be stay-at-home moms are busy outside of the house - it’s the way things are. The way spouses are sharing responsibilities today is admirable. I have to say, wives and husbands of 2019 are pretty damn awesome. Now book a babysitter and go celebrate!

Clients experience dramatically reduced signs of aging, plus dark spots are obliterated by precisely and effectively targeting pigment and breaking it down into minuscule particles.

In recent months, Healthpoint Laser Clinic has invested in even more of the latest technology available for the new space, adding powerful, game-changing services like UltraShape Power® and PicoWay®. SUMMER IS THE ULTIMATE SEASON for outdoor entertaining – stunning lakeviews, Okanagan sunshine, the wild smell of orchards in our backyards, and of course our neighbourhood access to worldclass wine, farm-to-table organic ingredients, and amazing talent to help us throw epic private parties. I always like to have something intriguing at the front gate, foyer or first place people arrive. Whether you have a fabulously-decorated bar cart with your signature cocktail upon arrival, an entertainer that fits with your theme ushering people inside the party, or simply a gorgeous bouquet of wild flowers and a sign on your foyer mirror that sets the mood – make sure that first impression is a wow-factor. Consider having your party catered – even if it’s an intimate guest list. As hosts – we often get so busy and overwhelmed ensuring everything is perfect in the kitchen that we forget to actually spend time with

our guests; laughing, sharing stories and being fully present, calm and engaged with them. We have so many AMAZING chefs – try asking your favourite restaurant chef if they’d come over for a special event, call a private chef or caterer, or hire a helper to take some of the pressure off of you. Servers and bartenders are another luxury that you can afford (students looking for extra cash are a perfect option) to help not only serve food, but also clear dishes and keep the kitchen area clean throughout the evening. You will thank me for this later, I promise! Whatever you’re serving, be it a glamourous brunch, a 6 course dinner, or just appies and cocktails – put some thought into the presentation of each and every culinary delight on the menu. Not only is this so much fun to do, your guests will be wowed by the extra effort. My favorite go-to for summer parties – edible flowers! Frozen into ice cubes, sprinkled on top of a salad, or delicately placed on top of dessert, they instantly dress up dishes and drinks (begonias, dianthus, lavender, pansies, and roses are my top choices but there are hundreds!). Look for organic design elements to incorporate (ie: forage for free on a Summer evening hike) and stick to a theme. Consider hiring ‘entertainment’ for an added sparkle. For Summer events, I love to hire local henna artists, musicians, sommeliers, photographers, and floral crown makers but the list of Okanaganbased talent is endless so whatever your theme is – you’ll be able to find someone perfect. Some unique party ideas I’ll be trying this Summer at home are a Backyard Movie Night Under the Stars, a Summer Solstice Soiree, an Icecream Sunday party, and a Girls-Only Spa Day Poolside.

Consider having your party catered. We have so many AMAZING chefs! Servers and bartenders are another luxury that you can afford. And hire ‘entertainment’ for an added sparkle!

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PREPARING YOUR BUSINESS FOR SALE

?

You own a business and work it 5-9 most days. First one in, last one out, and the last one to get paid. Sound familiar? Whether you’re considering retirement or looking to pursue something new, there are many factors to consider when selling your business. If your company is generating consistent and/or growing revenues and more importantly cash flow, there is value to be realized. Preparing a business for sale is critical in obtaining the highest selling price possible. First off, put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. As a buyer, what would you be looking for and expect to see in a business if you were planning on purchasing one? DEPENDENCY Many owners take pride in knowing and managing every facet of their company right down to the nitty gritty and most do not consider how that type of management style can affect the dependency of the company to one individual and how that may look in the eyes of a potential buyer. If you are working IN your business most of the time, then a new owner can expect to do the same or alternatively hire someone to take on that role which will reduce value. Empowering employees and having a few key people trained with competencies in place to run the business without your presence is ideal not only while you own and run the company but also when it comes time to sell

SCALABILITY Whether the buyer is already in the industry with plans for ex p a ns i o n via acquisition or an investor wanting to

?

diversify, they will be looking to purchase cash flow and growth potential. In theory, if the business is performing at its peak and at 100% capacity, the purchase price will be high and opportunity for growth may be limited. Depending on the numbers this might be attractive to some buyers however a business performing very well with “room for improvement” may be much more attractive. Explaining why the numbers are high or low is critical for helping the buyer understand how they may be able to drive performance when they take control of the company. PROFESSIONAL BOOKS Nothing is more off-putting than having to interpret or gain clarification on statements not formatted properly with line items categorized incorrectly. When assessing the value of your business, buyers will rely heavily on your financial statements and it is to the benefit of the business as a whole to have professionally prepared statements going back at least 5 years. Once again put yourself back in the buyer’s shoes... what impression would you have on a company whose financial statements could not be relied upon due to conflicting numbers or inconsistent formatting from one year to the next? TIME COMMITMENT NEEDED TO SELL If you plan to take on the sale of your business yourself, it’s critical not to let the process take your attention away from the most important job of maintaining the financial performance and product/service quality of your company. Business owners tend to underestimate the time commitment and energy that is required to properly list, market and sell their company. Many soon discover the hard way that most buyers aren’t serious or financially qualified to purchase a business, and 9/10 tend to occupy your time rather than going through the process of purchasing your business. In most cases, professional business brokers can get a

higher value for your business because of their expertise and training. It can take on average 9-12 months for a business to sell, sometimes longer. Before deciding to take on the sale of your business solo, ensure that you have the time and expertise to do so otherwise it can soon become the driving factor of declining performance.

“So now you want me to smell like my grandfather?” you may think. Nope, we don’t. But hey, if you want to - that’s up to you, of course. But that’s not what we mean when we talk about True Classics. We are talking about those fragrances that have survived all trends and have been with us for ages. Most likely because we don’t really like change and judge fragrances like cars. We want sophistication, but at the same time demand reliability and performance. And the moment we get it, we stick to it.

In Style!

Yes, there are hundreds of great men’s fragrances out there, but truly iconic ones are a sniff out of the ordinary. Among all the amazing scents, there are very few that have survived fads and fashions to earn their place in the hall of fame. And our mission was to find ... the 6 colognes every man should sniff! The Gentleman

They should have taught you this in school....

HOP ON MY BOAT! IT HAS BEEN with great anticipation and financial burden that boating season is once again upon us! With that comes hot days on the lake, music, water sports, sailing, and perhaps even some imbibing. If you aren’t a boat owner (you’re smart) and get invited on to someone else’s, here are some pearls to make sure you get invited back! First of all, remember that boat owners vary from super laid back to extremely anal, so you really have to know who you are dealing with. It is always best to err on the side of extra cautious when you start your day on someone’s boat. The first moment where the relationship will be determined for the rest of eternity is when you arrive on time, or when you arrive late. There is nothing worse than having a boat full of people floating awkwardly waiting for you to choose your favourite ‘Hey Y’all Flavour.’ Be. On. Time. WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING: •

Drinks. The rule is that the captain should never really have to bring anything to drink. Don’t be the guy who shows up with three beers for the day and has nothing extra. Think of it as your admission fee. Snacks. This is a big one because on a long day on the water, everyone will get hungry, and if you show up with a few great choices, you will be a hero. Before packing them though, think about the white vinyl upholstery on the boat and choose accordingly (no blueberries dude). If you are sailing, it is a whole different story, but proper footwear and attire are a must. Ask the captain ahead of time. I’m sorry, but you can’t sail in your new Timberlands. Ice. Please…always bring ice.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT BRING: •

• •

74

Spray-on sunblock. That stuff is terrible on a boat because it sticks to the glass, the upholstery and everyone’s sunglasses. Let’s go old school and apply sunscreen the way our ancestors did…Hawaiian tropic applied by someone of the opposite sex. A tidal wave of water when returning from a swim. When getting out of the water, it is polite to dry off to some extent on the swim platform before getting on board. One-piece bathing suits (just kidding) Expectations that we are going to love your playlist. The

OKANAGAN

www.iconokanagan.com

Summer 2019

Britney mix will probably kill with the group, but make sure the captain has the final word. An arsenal of all your own gear. There is little worse than the guy who arrives with his own board, rope, vest and ergonomic gloves ready to put on a show. We know you can shred, and we are all impressed with the stuff you got for Christmas, but we don’t have room! A board is often welcome for sure, but maybe check ahead. A friend/dog that wasn’t cleared ahead of time. Sometimes a boat can be pretty full, and unexpected guests can be a big problem.

OTHER TIPS: • •

• •

Take off your shoes when you arrive at the boat. For the love of God…take off your shoes! (This one might be a bit personal). Keep in mind when you board that when there are a lot of people on the boat with all their stuff, it can get a bit crowded and messy. Pack light, and when you get on, find a place to stow your stuff so the boat doesn’t look like a yard sale. If you are being pulled behind the boat, be conscious of the time you are spending. “One more time” gets pretty old when you are trying to land your new move for an hour while 6 other people are waiting for their turn. At the end of the day, offer to help tidy up the boat and cover it up if necessary. Empties, wet towels, crumbs are annoying to deal with, and it is nice to have some help. On a sailboat if you are asked by the captain to do something... hop to it! It may be a command that keeps you from falling overboard or getting a concussion. If you are out on a power boat for the day, it is always polite to offer to pay for gas. Gas for a full day can be anywhere from $100 to $600 depending on the boat. This is especially important if you are being pulled around behind the boat for a long time. Don’t be that guy!

Hopefully we’ll see you on the lake!

CONTINUATION A TRIBUTE TO THE GREATEST MOVIE CAR IN HISTORY

The iconic Aston Martin DB5 is back, thanks to a unique collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond films. Following the successful DB4 G.T. continuation project, a series of 25 Goldfinger DB5 continuation editions*, will be created for customers by Aston Martin Works and EON Productions. The Goldfinger DB5 continuation will be based on James Bond’s legendary car from 1964 and built by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell – the original home of the DB5. They will be authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen on screen, with some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability.

Its got just about everything from the 1964 Goldfinger film, except for the ejection seat. The gadgets were all developed by Aston Martin’s engineers and Chris Corbould, a Bond movie effects specialist.

This authenticity will extend to include functioning gadgets such as revolving number plates and more, which were made famous in Goldfinger. The gadgets will be co-developed with Oscar®-winner Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor from the James Bond films. Officially sanctioned by Aston Martin and EON Productions, all the Goldfinger edition cars will be produced to one specification - Silver Birch paint just like the original. The most instantly recognisable car of all-time, the DB5 made its first appearance in the third James Bond movie, Goldfinger, alongside Sean Connery as James Bond. Laden with gadgets and armaments installed by Q Branch, the secret agent’s Aston Martin became an instant hit with moviegoers.

Since its seminal appearance in Goldfinger the DB5 has featured in a further six James Bond movies: Thunderball (1965), again with Connery; GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) with Pierce Brosnan and three appearances alongside Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015). James Bond and his DB5 have become two icons of popular culture and one of the most successful and enduring movie partnerships of alltime. Each Goldfinger DB5 continuation car will be priced at £2.75m (appr. US $3.6 million) plus taxes. First deliveries of the not road legal cars to customers will commence in 2020.

Comfort Food Comfortable Place by Steve MacNaull

Little Hobo: 44 years and counting! The eatery remained in that hole-in-the-wall location until three years ago, when husband-and-wife new owners Stephen MacDonald and Crystal Dougan moved Little Hobo three blocks to a more recent vintage brick building at the corner of Leon Avenue and Bertram Street.

T

here’s a certain 1970s vibe these days at Little Hobo Soup & Sandwich Shop in Kelowna. Not that anyone is wearing bellbottoms or mood rings or sporting bushy sideburns. Love Will Keep Us Together and Rhinestone Cowboy are not playing over the sound system. But there is a huge, circa-1975, black-white-andred hand painted sign on the south wall declaring: Little Hobo, Your Variety Sandwich Shop. It’s the original sign that graced the historic downtown brick building at the corner of Lawrence Avenue and Pandosy Street where the Little Hobo first opened in 1975.

Summer 2019

“We’re still feeling retro,” says Crystal with a laugh. “I was born in 1974, so 1975 to me is definitely a long time ago. We’re in another building and we have a new menu, but nostalgia is in everything we do.” True that. “Little Hobo has always been, and will always be, about made-from-scratch comfort food in a comfortable place at a comfortable price,” says Crystal. “We’re all about the happy vibe here. And everyone is welcome from the homeless to executives. My goal is simply to feed people and make them feel cared for.” Stephen and Crystal are a pair of social workers who eight years ago decided to do a 180 and completely change careers. There had been pillow talk of them getting a little place of their own to serve food and treat people like family.

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE

But it didn’t become reality until Crystal was impulsive one day eight years at The Hobo Eatery while picking up her weekly egg salad sandwich. “I asked (then owner) Ron (Taylor) if he wanted to sell,” remembers Crystal. “He said absolutely not. But then he decided he wanted to move back to Whistler and gave me an outrageous price for a tiny, little place basically run with hot plate and a single sink.” Crystal took the bad bargain and shook Ron’s hand. “I went home and told Steve: I think I just bought us a restaurant,” says Crystal. “We both left our jobs and became partners, not just in life, but in business. We doubled sales in eight months.” The change in ownership also solidified Little Hobo’s future as a true mom-and-pop shop. The white back-lit sign currently on the facade at 596 Leon Ave. reads: Little Hobo Soup & Sandwich Shop, established 1975. But posted prominently inside, like a trip down memory lane, there’s the aforementioned original sign, The Wee Little Hobo sign of the 1980s, The Hobo Eatery sign from the 2000s and even an electric-blue neon sign Stephen and Crystal tried out a few years ago. Fun, or not-so-fun, fact: The Wee Little Hobo sign was a heavy two-sided affair that fell down, ripping part of the building facade with it. In the early days, Little Hobo got on a franchising kick and at its peak there were seven Little Hobo restos – three in Kelowna and one each in Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton and Castlegar. Today there’s only the downtown Kelowna location to carry on the good-eats-in-homey-atmosphere tradition. In some ways, Little Hobo is an oasis of kitsch in a modern world. Video game maker Hyper Hippo is next door and a bank and office building is across the street. “Oh ya, we get a lot of the techie crowd,” says Crystal. “And

keeps the hungry come back time and time again. The only item from 1975 that’s still on the menu is Hobo soup, a retro hamburger-cabbage-and-broth concoction. “In the 1970s it was considered the diet soup, I imagine because it had cabbage in it,” says Crystal. “I’ve made it even healthier, and tastier, by using leaner beef, organic stock and more vegetables. And it’s still only $5.50.” Sandwiches are still Little Hobo’s stock-in-trade, from a classic Rueben, clubhouse and cheese steak to grilled cheese, egg salad and submarine. Every Thursday yearround is holiday turkey sandwich special day, featuring freshly roasted turkey and all the fixings between two slices of bread. Open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays means Little Hobo is also big into breakfast. It’s all on offer from eggs any style, including Benedict and pancakes to French toast and brekky sandwiches. Other lunch items run the comfort-food gamut from meatloaf, perogies, mac and chesse and shepherd’s pie to beef dip, eight different burgers, hand-cut fries and poutine. And if you’re on a real health kick, you can order a salad. This being 2019, there are also vegetarian, vegan, glutenfree and keto options.

a lot of other people that work downtown. But we’re also a destination for those loyal customers who have been coming here for years and like it that we call them by name.” Besides the sign museum, the interior of Little Hobo is an eclectic mix of concrete floor, exposed-duct-work ceiling, mismatched tables and chairs, plastic floral and gingham tablecloths and open kitchen. And it’s in that kitchen where the magic happens. Because, after all, history and interesting decor may help define Little Hobo, but its the exceptional comfort food that

While only open six hours a day, five days a week, Little Hobo is much more than a full-time job for Stephen and Crystal. Their alarm goes off at 3:30 a.m. every weekend so they can get to the restaurant to do prep. After closing at 2 p.m. there’s clean up, food shopping and more prep. Sundays also tend to be gobbled up by food shopping and additional prep. That leaves Saturdays off to spend with their three grown up daughters and new grandchild. “This schedule is enjoyable and manageable because we’re doing what we love,” says Crystal. “But I would like to get a little better organized, learn to delegate and take the odd half-day off here and there.”

Twist & Shout!

Gina Harfman - Proprietor & Winemaker, Oliver Twist Estate Winery A visit to the Black Sage Bench can double as a trip down memory lane at Oliver Twist Estate Winery, just south of Oliver. You’ll be awed by a breathtaking west-facing view across the valley to the Golden Mile Bench watched over by a 1938 Chevy truck blooming with pink petunias. A retro, pinstriped Coldspot fridge decorates the entry to the tasting room, along with old farmhouse window frames and an antique Woodcrest stove. “I got most of the vintage pieces in the tasting room from my Nana,” says Gina Fernandes Harfman, 40, sole proprietor, winemaker and leader of the uniquely all-female team at Oliver Twist Estate Winery. She’s the fourth generation from her family to sink her hands into South Okanagan soil. Her paternal great-grandfather was a vineyard owner in Croatia before he made the journey to Osoyoos and started cattle ranching. On her maternal side, her grandfather Joe Fernandes came to Osoyoos in 1959 from Madeira. He was the first Portuguese immigrant to purchase orchard land, paying $7,000 for seven acres that is still in the Fernandes family today. The Oliver Twist Estate is a 17-acre property, 14 of which are planted to Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Kerner, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Viognier. This season Harfman is introducing Malbec and Cabernet Franc to the estate vineyards to increase her independence for sourcing grapes for all of her red blends. Harfman crafts fruit-forward, luscious whites and full, juicy reds, in addition to sparkling,

late harvest and port-style wines. Denice and Bruce Hagerman of Grand Prairie, AB, tore out an apple orchard and established Oliver Twist Estate Winery and vineyard in 2006 as a retirement project. At that time, Gina Harfman was 27 and had tried Fine Art school in Kelowna, airbrush courses in Las Vegas and was working airbrushing and pinstriping hot rods and

motorcycles. When she was preparing for her wedding in 2009, she made her first wines with grapes from her father Ken Harfman’s vineyard. “It was Gewurtztraminer and Merlot, and I custom pinstriped the labels for the August wedding with 350 guests,” says Harfman. “I had to make a lot of wine, knowing my family. And I loved doing it, so that September I enrolled in Okanagan College to learn more about winemaking.” She worked at Cassini Cellars as his assistant winemaker and began helping Denice Hagerman with crush at Oliver Twist as well. In 2012, while on the bottling line with the Hagermans, Denice said to Harfman “why don’t you buy the winery from us?” Harfman was shocked, as she was 32 at the time and just had her first child, Jaxson. “I could do that?!” she replied, once her jaw came off the cellar floor.

Vida, Portuguese for “life” and Cidalia after Harfman’s mom, her own strong, hardworking role model.

“Why not?” asked Denice. And they worked together to make it happen.

It was a very trying time for the entire family, and it fell right through harvest and crush. Hagerman was able to step in and make the white wine, but no red wines were made in the 2015 vintage. It was all worth it when Harfman came home for Christmas with a strong, if tiny, baby girl.

When Harfman took over, she wanted to bring something of her own to the winery. She created the Nostalgia series of wines, with the labels featuring pin-up girl characters and classic cars by Southern Californian artist Ralph Burch. The first release was Cherry Baby, a fortified wine with a cherry base, each destemmed by hand, blended with Merlot with firecracker Bobbi Jo gracing the label. Rockabilly Red came next in the 2013 vintage, a voluptuous blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a splash of Syrah, Malbec and Cabernet Franc to add spice and mystery, just like pin-up character Ruby Sue on the label. Boogie Woogie White and Ellie Mae, Pink Cadillac rosé with Billy Jean, and Chantilly Lace sparkling with Cindy Lou’s pretty face followed. All five of the characters come together on the 2019 summer release of a red, white and rosé called “The Girls,” which will be sold at Save-On-Foods. “The Nostalgia series is where I can experiment with blends and have some fun with the labels,” says Harfman. She likes to keep the Oliver Twist Estate wines more focused on varietal offerings, like the winery’s best selling Kerner, an aromatic white variety of German origin that is a crossing of Riesling and Trollinger. “I came up with Nostalgia mostly because of my dad -- he has so many stories about the good ol’ days, like racing his buddies up Anarchist mountain in his ‘69 Camaro,” Harfman says. “When people come into the tasting room and see the labels or the antiques we have on display, they always share stories with us. It makes for a really warm and friendly atmosphere.” Denice Hagerman has continued to be involved in the winemaking process over the years, which was especially helpful when Harfman was airlifted to hospital in August of 2015 when she went in to labour after 23 weeks. Her daughter, a micro-preemie, was born after 25 weeks and they were in various hospitals together until December. She knew the baby would need everything possible to survive a 15-week premature birth, so she named her Vida Cidalia --

annual Show, Shine ‘n’ Wine the second weekend of July, this year it is Saturday, July 13th from noon to 5pm. It’s an official Collector Car Appreciation Day event.

Since Vida’s homecoming, Harfman began hosting a pancake breakfast the Sunday morning after the Half Corked Marathon in May. The breakfast raises money for JoeAnna’s House, Kelowna General Hospital’s home-awayfrom-home for families who need to be close to loved ones receiving treatment. “It’s a small way I can give back, as I fully understand what families go through with long hospital stays. It’s hard enough without having to worry about where you’re going to sleep.”

“The Car Show is so much fun,” says Harfman. “This year we have live blues with the James Hay Trio, a pin-up girl competition, swing dance lessons, fun trophies for the classic cars, food trucks, Jackson’s Brewhouse, door prizes from our many generous sponsors and wine of course!”

Harfman’s marriage ended during the challenges of 2015, and she moved forward as sole proprietor, winemaker and single Mom of two. Today, keep an eye out at the winery for Jaxson, seven, practicing his moonwalk across the parking lot, and Vida, three, climbing pallets of wine in the crush pad in her SuperGirl costume. What you won’t see anymore is the 1950 Mercury or the 1934 Ford, as Harfman lost them in the divorce. “Everyone loved the Merc and would always tell me their stories about what happened to them and the trouble they found in their old cars!” she laughs. “I’m keeping my eye out for another classic to have at the winery!” Following her love of hot rods, Oliver Twist is host to an

Admission is by donation to the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation, and a local rider will be at the event to encourage and collect the donations. “We told him he has to dress as a pin-up girl and ride around the event!” Every fall a Crush Party helps to celebrate the harvest, and this year it is Saturday, September 28th. “We try to make the Crush Party fun for the family. There’s a Lucille Ball look-alike competition and we do a grape stomp, but always liven it up with more obstacles. Last year kids had to hula hoop while stomping grapes, or they blasted the adults with silly string,” Harfman grins. Family is at the heart of Oliver Twist Estate Winery, and Harfman hopes that is not only nostalgic -- she wants to stay a family business for the future of the winery, too. www.olivertwistwinery.com

What We Love About The Okanagan

This issue we speak to Gina Harfman, owner of Oliver Twist Estate Winery and 4th Generation Osoyoos gal, about some of her favourite things in the Okanagan.

1

Local Fruit Markets and Farmers’ Markets: I grew up in a fruit orchard and around ground crops; an apple bin was my playpen! My family has owned Fernandes Fruit Market in Osoyoos since the 60’s. There’s nothing more tasty than eating a fresh juicy peach.

Edited by Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie.

2

3

Tickleberry’s: This is a ‘must stop’ in Okanagan Falls. There are countless flavours of good old fashioned ice cream, plus a gift shop, local crafts, wind chimes, toys, jewelry, art and collectables.

Kenyon Park in Okanagan Falls: I’m a single mom of a three and seven year old and I take my kids to this little beach on Skaha Lake. It’s great for a fun-filled family day. The two acre family park includes a spray park, shallow sandy beach, swings, merry-gorounds, zip line, slides, and is only minutes away from Tickleberry’s and stores. It’s a little hidden gem.

4

Rattlesnake Canyon: Located in Osoyoos, this is another family fun afternoon, featuring amusements for the kids - an arcade, bumper boats, go carts and rides, scooped ice cream, gift shop and mini golf.

5

Half Corked Marathon Weekend: This year there were 1500 participants dressed in costumes, and 17 wineries along the route. It’s not just a marathon - it’s a full weekend. Oliver Twist hosts the Primavera Dinner on Friday, as well as a charity pancake breakfast. On Saturday, there’s Party at the Finish Line (26 wineries) and Dinner in the Park - a family style barbeque hosted by local wineries. I actually participated this year; my legs are still sore!

6

11 7

8

Osoyoos Cherry Fiesta:This (71st) Annual July 1st Canada Day Celebration is chock full of activities. The Osoyoos fire departments always put on a show soaking down the people on the streets, and the famous Cherry Pit Spitting competition is hilarious. Its fireworks have been voted the Best in BC.

10

Haynes Point Provincial Park: This is a peninsula on Osoyoos Lake. You can walk along the sandbar (my dad used to use it to walk home from school) and has camping, beaches, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and waterskiing, and it’s safe for the kids to bike ride.

Doug’s Homestead: This artisan meat shop was from Hedley and they just recently moved to Kaleden. They have the best beef jerky, pepperoni, sausages and fresh meats. And, if you can guess the weight of your pepperoni stick purchase they will give it to you for free.

Show & Shines: These happen from Osoyoos all the way up the valley, including Peach City Beach Cruise, Peachland’s World of Wheels, and Boyd’s in Kelowna. Cactus Jalopies is a major one in Osoyoos in June; Oliver Twist has our annual Show, Shine ’n’ Wine every July (this year July 13).

9

Oliver Winery Culinary Experiences: There are so many great ones! Terrafina by RauDZ at Hester Creek is Tuscan style, nestled amongst the vines. VinAmite has the best charcuterie boards and patio overlooking their vineyard. Masala Bistro at Kismet features fresh Indian cuisine. Miradoro at Tinhorn Creek has panoramic views of the valley, locally sourced ingredients and a Mediterranean flare.

Oliver Eats Ltd.: This full delicatessen features local cheese, meats, bakery, eggs, pastas and just opened last year. There’s a seating area, with crafted espresso drinks, baked goods, hearty soups, salads and sandwiches, and they also offer catering and culinary workshops. Co-owner, Derek Uhlemann, is a major supporter of local producers.

1 2 13

Wineries: We are surrounded by them. I can count nine just looking out of my window. All the different wine routes, Osoyoos, Oliver’s Black Sage Bench or Golden Mile, Ok Falls Wine Route, Similkameen Valley, Bottleneck Drive, Naramata Bench, and so on; they are so close by and all have different wines to offer, different terroir, flavours, wine styles, landscapes, and culinary experiences. I can’t pick just one! Anarchist Mountain Lookout: A ten minute drive east of Osoyoos, it has the most breathtaking panoramic views from Oliver to Oroville.
