PUBLISHER’S LETTER It’s a Man’s World!
... and now I’m in trouble, right? Really, just kidding! It was Catherine who wanted me to write an intro that ‘kinda’ says that this is a men’s edition. Which was her idea as well. I guess the guys were complaining (I would never do that myself, of course!) and it was from this that the whole “Dudes & Dogs” idea was born. And having Justin and Nacho as our feature story really makes it a little special in this issue. But ladies, fear not! Although we have a lot of very cool stuff for ‘the dudes’ (some cool cars, gadgets, fashion and more) there is more than enough for you in this edition. Flipping through it ... I would say it’s a good balance. So forgive me my title statement. “Wishful thinking” ... I know, I know. Worth a shot ...
Olaf Robrecht
Depending on when you get this edition it is either near Christmastime, and in this case I would say most of us are really looking forward to it and enjoy it, or it is the winter season ... and that’s when opinions tend to differ sharply. Some of us simply love it - snow, skiing, the outdoors, evenings in front of a cozy fireplace with friends and family; others can’t wait for the ‘white stuff’ to disappear, they wan’t the warm sun back, get the convertible out, jump in the lake and have a barbeque with friends on the porch.
On the cover:
Justin Pasutto & Nacho Location: Muse & Merchant, Kelowna Photographer: Nick Schafer
Well, we can’t change the season but we hope that this current edition of ICON Okanagan gives you a little break, let’s you sit down and relax. Enjoy! We also send some of our ICON team members on a little makeover mission. A new outfit, some accessories, and the guys could even pick a new car. Well, that’s for the photo shoot... Anyway - “meet the team!” And as this is the last edition in 2018 - here’s to a fantastic 2019!

NACHO & Justin Pasutto e shouldn’t feel too badly for Justin Pasutto.
Well, he might have just gone from “Jillian’s husband” to “the guy who owns Nacho.”
He’s an accomplished entrepreneur, loving father and devoted husband to-be. He’s working hard to build his career in real-estate development and on television alongside his fiance, former-Bachelorette Jillian Harris.
“It’s been an ongoing joke,” Pasutto said with a laugh. “My friends tease me because Nacho is more famous than I am. I’ve been in the limelight under Jillian and now Nacho is involved. … It’s been pretty entertaining.”
Heck, he’s a former pro snowboarder, for goodness sake. What could we possibly feel sorry for him about?
Harris, of course, is the reality-TV star and designer behind shows such as Jillian and Justin, Love It or List It – Vancouver and many, many others. She was the 2009 star of The Bachelorette after a memorable appearance on The Bachelor.

Winter 2019
Nacho is their four-year-old boxer rescued from the beaches of Mexico. He’s especially good at stealing scenes on TV or drawing attention of magazine photographers.
Nacho’s confused owner warned Matt “this dog is not going to live,” Pasutto related. “Nonetheless, Matt said, ‘Well, we’ll see about that.’”
He’s appeared in magazines like Hello! Canada and Style at Home. “It’s like there’s a human brain going on inside that dog’s head,” Pasutto said.
Matt took the dog to a vet in Mexico to get him healthy enough to travel. Pasutto and his family had been talking about adopting a dog, so they eventually accepted Nacho into their home.
That might explain a whirlwind year that was 2018 for Nacho. Harris posted an Instagram video earlier this year in which Nacho was caught sitting inside son Leo’s car seat. Harris opened her vehicle’s back door only to find Nacho perched inside the carseat with a disdainful look on his face. He wasn’t merely sitting in the carseat, he was “sitting” in it like the human baby he believes he is. It was actually the second time he’s pulled the trick. A few years ago, Pasutto found him in much the same position, but this time draped over the infant carseat. The most recent 15-second clip resonated with dog lovers, parents and beyond. It had been viewed nearly 500,000 times on YouTube. When The Ellen Degeneres Show reposted the video on Instagram, it was “loved” 979,000 times and generated over 48,000 comments. It seemed every entertainment and social media website and TV show featured the clip. It doesn’t get more viral, and that caught someone’s eye at The Body Shop. Nacho then appeared alongside other adorable dogs in an anti-animal testing campaign for the cosmetics’ maker, including a billboard in New York City’s Times Square. But Nacho is more than that. Pasutto’s brother, Matt, stumbled upon Nacho and his littermates while surfing in Mexico. The puppies were in rough shape, and Matt asked the owner if he could have Nacho. “Nacho was more or less the runt and probably a week or two away from dying,” Pasutto said. His eyes were askew, his skin was patchy and he was malnourished.
The three-month-old puppy flourished in Canada. “It took us almost a year to rehabilitate his nutrition and his stomach. He was having issues eating,” Pasutto said. “He’s just been a helluva dog ever since.” And, despite his antics in carseats, Nacho is proud guardian to two-year-old Leo and newborn baby Annie. Pasutto is happily watching it all unfold. Alongside fatherhood and filming, he’s also a development project manager with the Passuto family business, Innocept. The real-estate development company is busy in Kelowna these days building the 54unit St. Paul townhome and condo complex downtown. That’s the “day job.” “It’s insane,” said Pasutto, 30. “We did our own TV show about a year ago now. And every ounce of free time or weekend would go towards filming.” Through that appearance, Pasutto became the “contractor” on Love It or List It – Vancouver. He films once or twice every other week, but has to bring his laptop with him to stay connected to Innocept. Then there’s the fatherhood role, which doubled in demands with Annie’s arrival in late September.

media. The family always proceeds with caution when it comes to their family.
“The bonding level has gone up a million times,” he said. “We can do all these cool things together. I’m thrilled. I love it, and I love being a dad.”
“It’s sensitive,” he said. “We want it to be intimate and have it our thing and our thing only, but at the same time, too, we do want to share it with everybody. “It’s part of what we signed up for, being in that public eye and the spotlight.”
It’s a fascinating chapter for the family. Pasutto said, but not without its challenges. Alongside fame and attention a TV show brings, there’s always blowback on social

admitted. They didn’t announce Annie’s birth until about a week after she was born to have the moment with family and close friends. Of course, it doesn’t always work. Internet trolls, or even average consumers, aren’t afraid to point out their mistakes. Harris sees it more, but Pasutto doesn’t escape it. He said he reminds himself that he can’t please everyone, and that he’s doing what he feels is best for his family. “Most of the time you can delete and block and move on,” he said. “But there is the odd one that stings. You want to do everything in your power to find out who this person is and try and just yell and scream at the top of your lungs. But at the end of the day it gets you nowhere.” About the only member of the family who is universally praised? Of course, Nacho. Pasutto said the “fur ball” has “free hall pass to pets and hugs. “What a life. Who would’ve known? A dog that was on its deathbed in Mexico to cameo appearances and TV shows, and then gets his own billboard and then lands this little Instagram video that goes viral across the world and lands on the Ellen Degeneres Show. “He’s like our child for crying out loud.”

OKANAGAN DOG PARKS Did you know that, according to the Regional District of Central Okanagan, there are more than 16,000 licensed dogs in Kelowna? And the Okanagan can be an outdoor-heaven for them - if you follow a few rules! ON-LEASH PARK RULES
OFF-LEASH PARK RULES
The majority of Kelowna’s parks allow dogs on-leash. In parks that permit dogs on-leash, dogs are to be kept on the sidewalk or trails (this is a Regional bylaw). Owners must be in control of their dogs at all times and are expected to pick-up after their pets immediately - if they poop, you must scoop! This helps ensure everyone can enjoy Kelowna’s public spaces.
•
Parks that do not allow dogs on-leash are too small and too close to playgrounds, or in environmentally sensitive areas.
• • • • •
Please always follow these simple rules and responsibilities: •
• • • • • •
Owners/handlers must pick-up after their dog(s). If they poop, you must scoop! Dog waste can remain on the ground for an extended period of time (up to one year, depending on the climate and conditions), and even after it’s “disappeared,” it doesn’t mean it’s gone. The waste contains bacteria, nitrogen and salts that don’t dissolve and have the potential to be harmful.
• • • • • • •
Owners/handlers must pick-up after their dogs. If they poop, you must scoop! Users of the facility do so at their own risk. The City shall not be liable for any injury or damage caused by any dog in the offleash area The off-leash dog area is for dogs, their handlers and those accompanying them. No other use is allowed. Dogs must be under control of their handler and in view of their handler at all times Dogs must be removed from the off-leash dog area at the first sign of aggression All dogs must be legally licensed and shall wear a visible dog license All dogs should be currently vaccinated No animals other than dogs shall be permitted in the area No dogs under four months of age No female dogs in heat Handlers must be 15 years of age or older Children age 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult in the off-leash dog area Dogs must be on a leash when entering and exiting the off-leash dog area
Leashes must not be longer than two m (six ft.) Handlers must have possession of the dog leash at all times Maximum of two dogs per handler Handlers are responsible for any injuries caused by the dog(s) under their control Handlers must ensure their dogs don’t bother other park users Dogs on leash must stay at least 10 m. (30 ft.) away from playgrounds

For 20 years, the Tree of Hope at Landmark Centre has been a bright symbol of inspiration and hope to our community. What started with an idea that Al Stober came up with when he looked at the 160 foot construction crane standing idle next to the completed shell of the Landmark 2 Tower has turned into an iconic symbol and a glowing reminder of the spirit of the Christmas season. The Tree of Hope has been lit every year since 1997. It now stands over 120 feet tall and has approximately 25,000 LED energy efficient bulbs. Most importantly, the Tree of Hope has become a local celebration, fundraising event and symbol of Kelowna as a community known for its kindness to those less fortunate. This year, the lighting by Mayor Colin Basran and family was followed by the annual Craft Culture Market, which will take place Friday and Saturday from 12 to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. From Late November until January, the Tree of Hope is also a visible reminder to the citizens and visitors of Kelowna that the Christmas season is a time of generosity and compassion, bringing joy to friends and family. And more: In partnership with the tenants of Landmark Centre and TD Canada Trust, the Tree of Hope donates funds each year to local charitable organisations. Over $500,000 has been donated to date.

About Face: NEW VOLITE TREATMENT By Dr. Janna Bentley
W
We are all amazing creations, and as a medical doctor I am still fascinated at the beautiful and complex design of the human body. Over time, however, our bodies change – and most notably, our face. For some, ageing brings lovely ‘laugh lines’ and character – both pleasant and natural (and lucky genes). For many, however, ageing appears in the face as signs of sad, angry or tired – negative attributes that we don’t want to convey to others (or see in the mirror).
any discomfort (topical anaesthetic may be applied). It is a 15 to 20 minute treatment (depending on areas treated). Volite is designed for use on the face, neck, décolletage and hands. After treatment, there is typically some redness that goes away within 30 to 90 minutes. Results start to appear immediately, and come fully into effect over the next 10 days. I consider it a very safe treatment, but talk to an expert nurse or doctor for details. Expect to pay around $750 for one facial area with Volite treatment by a certified nurse or doctor, though it varies patient to patient, clinic to clinic.
Just like going to the gym for our body, sometimes our facial skin needs a ‘boot camp workout’ to rejuvenate it. This helps our face to convey our (hopefully) inner content, calm and vitality.
Volite is not a magic bullet, of course. To reverse serious ageing effects we typically use Botox and Juvederm for a foundation, and we recommend Volite as a complement to any good anti-aging regime.
Excitingly, an innovative new option is Volite. It is the first of its kind to combine tone, texture and fine-wrinkle therapy in a long-lasting injectable treatment. Volite uses Vycross technology and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) gel designed to improve our skin’s smoothness (absence of fine lines), hydration and elasticity for up to nine months with just one treatment.
Consider Volite primarily as an effective one treatment per year “freshen up” for dry and tired-looking skin – and definitely a better investment than any hydrating facial, which might feel relaxing but doesn’t have such long-lasting benefits.
A few months ago we received some of the first Volite in Canada. After learning about its design properties, I had one of my experienced injector nurses treat me. I love it. I’ve noticed a real difference in the hydration of my skin, especially in the neck area.
I am really pleased with the healthy and natural looking results in patients and my own Volite treatment. Patients feel their complexion has more of a glow... Maybe it’s your time to Volite!
I strongly feel it is a game changer (and I don’t say that often) but here is why: almost all skin care products don’t get through our skin. It’s an incredible protective barrier – so even great quality skin care like Vivier or SkinMedica have limits. In addition, there is climate: living in the dry Okanagan (winter or summer), people often are challenged to keep their skin hydrated – more so if you’re getting extra sun and wind skiing at Big White. The main option used to be apply more moisturizer. Some patients now say “I used to apply moisturizer halfway through the day again, but since having Volite I don’t need to.” What to expect: An expert uses a very fine needle to injected Volite within the dermis, and most patients barely notice

The Lady
by Kristine Jones
Be the woman a gentleman adores....
MEN ARE LIKE
EGO WAFFLES! A few years ago, I remember sitting by the pool chatting to my girlfriend… wait a second, I wasn’t chatting, I was bitching about my spouse. Afterwards she said something that literally changed my whole opinion about how men and women interact. She playfully told me that men are like Eggo Waffles and women are like spaghetti. Men can compartmentalize (envision the individual squares on an Eggo) and ladies can tend to let everything weave together, like spaghetti noodles on a fork. Mind blowing. The Eggo Waffle was definitely my spouse. I could no longer bitch. My friend, Kim, put things into such prospective that I realized I was complaining about something that was actually a talent to be celebrated. While I was feeling overwhelmed and out of control, it was my own fault for trying to eat an entire plate of spaghetti in one sitting. This gave me a whole new appreciation for my man – and the realization that I was downright carb binging. Un-structured structure Pass me the pen, if it’s got a date and a time, it belongs on the calendar and it is planned weeks in advance. If I am going out for ladies’ night and want Rob to be the designated driver, he’s finding out about it six weeks in advance. When I tell him the date, that’s also precisely when he laughs at me for asking so far in advance. Listen pal, just humour me, and put it in your phone! I’m the planner, and he’s the guy that keeps things unpredictable. Structure is great, but I am thankful to have someone who challenges me to unstructure our calendar and just enjoy the roller coaster ride. Ordering pizza
Don’t touch the walls When I see a fingerprint on the wall, I’m annoyed. When toys are left on the floor, I’m annoyed. When it’s been a long day and the kids are bickering, I’m annoyed. Quietly in the background, Rob will playfully say to me, “it’s crazy that the kids act like kids hey?” Never condescending about it, but every time he says that, it reminds me to chill out. And how about that time Rob went to Toys R Us to buy mini-sticks to play hockey in the hallway. Sitting on the couch, I was secretly admiring the cheering from my son, who is not normally allowed to play hockey in the house. There are some good whacks on the walls, but I’m grateful for the memories, and glad Rob wasn’t afraid take action. I’ll never change… I’ll still buy kitchen chairs with white seats and stress over food strains, but it is Rob who will laugh and tease me about how silly I was to buy them in the first place. We’re different and don’t always align, but I’ve learned that these differences are what make us good together. He influences our family in meaningful ways that I would never want to change. And let’s get one thing straight, just because I appreciate my spouse, doesn’t mean he doesn’t drive me into a state of pandemonium – it happens! But ladies, next time you feel the urge to call your bestie and bitch, smile and think of all the little ways your partner brings out the best in you. Who would have thought Eggo Waffles and spaghetti could get served up as a balanced meal?! … And when in doubt, just add two glasses of merlot to the mix. Cheers to all of the amazing spouses, dedicated dads, and influential men in our worlds.
When did eating pizza become an art? When I was a kid, we ordered pepperoni and Hawaiian pizza. That was pizza. It didn’t have feta, or prawns, or a name like Margherita. Rob loves pizza, he’ll eat it seven days a week if it’s available, but his definition of it is much sexier than mine. When we met I’d order my basic pizza and he would order something fancy with an egg on top. Then I’d be staring at my boring pizza envying his adventurous order. After years of doing this, I have finally learned to relinquish my boring ways and let the guy order our pizzas. (I have yet to warm up to the idea of a real Christmas tree. I’m just not there yet friends. Let’s talk next year, baby steps.)

A COZY HOME Let’s face it - it’s winter and there’s nothing better than coming home after a long day and settling down into a comfy, cozy living room. Especially if you live in a cold climate. Yes, it is the time of the year when you want to curl up, hide in your home and wait for the weather to pass. Fortunately, creating a cozy living room that’s warm and welcoming is pretty easy. It’s all about warm colours, soft fabrics and surrounding yourself with things that make you happy. But don’t forget: There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to creating a cozy living room. Feel free to have a little fun! Traditional style rooms tend to lend themselves to a sense of coziness. Go to a bookstore and have a look at some books about lake houses and cottages, or do an Google Image search. You will see that curved lines of the furniture, soft fabrics, and traditional architectural details create a sense of familiarity which makes people feel at ease. When it comes down to it, any style of room can be made to feel cozy, but perhaps none so easily as traditional style rooms. When it comes to a colour scheme, nothing is more inherently cozy than warm neutrals. A palette of soft greys and browns can set the stage for a collection of comfortable furniture and easygoing fabrics. The same time, a dark paint colour can actually do the trick as well. There’s something about dark colours that creates a sense of warmth, just make sure there’s adequate light so the space doesn’t feel like a cave.
Something Living Every living room needs to have something that’s alive in it (other than you). And nothing injects a sense of life into a space like a vibrant, natural plant does. They look awesome in any type of décor or style. And if you can, add some fresh flowers, too.

Something Meaningful How about a collection of family photos, or a piece of art. It does not have to be expensive, the idea is that it not be something that anyone can just go to a store and purchase. This is what will define your living room from everyone else’s and make the room unique to your home.

The warmth of a fireplace... nothing makes a room feel cozier. There’s something particularly comforting about a traditional wood burning fireplace, but if this is something you can’t have in your house or apartment, a gas or even one of the new electric fireplaces work just as well.
Accessories!
Candles Lots of them! Even if you’re not planning a romantic evening, you can still use candles to make your living room feel more cozy, inviting and relaxing. If you have a mantle you have a great opportunity to display a variety of candles and their holders. Be sure to change them up with the seasons.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR DONATION TO
THE CENTRAL OKANAGAN FOOD BANK For over 30 years, the Kelowna and West Kelowna Community Food Banks have provided nutritious meals for struggling families. Now, the amalgamated Central Okanagan Food Bank (COFB) serves between 3,000 and 4,000 individuals per month. This support is possible through individual donations – and while all donations are appreciated, specific kinds of donations make the biggest impact. Here are just a few ways that you can maximize your donation. Monetary Donations are Most Helpful The best way to support Food Bank users is to donate money. The COFB has access to a network of retail partners that sell to us wholesale. That means every dollar you donate to the Food Bank buys three dollars worth of food for a family in need. Donating Food? Try to Think About Meal Planning If you do decide to donate non- perishable food items, it’s best to try to combine items into planned meals. For instance, donating pasta, tomato sauce, and canned vegetables
together makes it easy for a family in need to create a quick pasta dish. Baby Supplies are Always in Demand Many families who receive Food Bank assistance have young children, which is why donating baby supplies is a great way to support the COFB. JAMES BOND does NOT take
I
- ESSENTIALS FOR THE MODERN DAY MAN -
t’s true! Have you ever seen James Bond taking a selfie? Can you imagine Paul Newman or Steve McQueen using a selfie-stick to capture a pic of themselves with the beautiful sunset? No! The only respectable man who can pull off the selfie is Robert Downey Jr, and that’s because he is fricking Iron Man and therefore he can do whatever he wants. Simply put - a

real guy won’t own or use certain things - and he definitely needs a few accessories that are a ‘must’ to own. So let us show you a few essentials that you should definitely have, items that will not only set you apart but give you conversation pieces for your next meetings, events and parties.
JAMES BOND does NOT take
THE STYLISH RETRO-WATCH
Get rid of your damn smartwatch! Really, we mean it! Instead, get a classic. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a fine Swiss timepiece. Longines was founded in 1832, making it one of the oldest watch brands out there, and the pictured Longines DolceVita can be yours for around $2,000. www.longines.com
SELFIES!
THE CLASSIC BALLPEN
You have enough pens? The ones you took from the last hotel you stayed at, or the ones your insurance agent gave you? C’mon on! Nothing says style better than a classic ballpen. How about the luxury ballpoint pen Meisterstück Classique - a distinctive design icon. www.montblanc.com
A REAL CAMERA
Your cellphone takes great pics? Sure - but have you ever seen James Bond take a selfie? NO! For a reason! So STEP UP YOUR GAME, get yourself a premium retro-style digital camera such as the ultra-cool 24.3 MP Fujifilm X100F and you will get some looks and compliments (and great pictures!) on your next trip. www.fujifilm.com
CUFFLINKS
Cufflinks symbolize power, reputation and wealth. But choose classic ones, don’t go for your favourite cartoon character or car-brand! Also - consider getting a tailored shirt with your monogram.
A UNIQUE WALLET
Do you have one of those super-thick “I have all my paperwork in it” wallets? Even worse - your back pocket? Man, you need help! A stylish wallet such as the pictured ‘Secrid’ from Holland which comes in many different styles and models will set you apart. And more - The aluminium Cardprotector protects your cards from bending, breaking and unwanted RFID and NFC communication, too! www.secrid.com
A BLACKBERRY
Wait - they still make them? Yes, well, in a way. It is a different company that makes the cellphones but they are very cool and use Android now. The pictured KeyTwo is their newest model. Its blend of style, solid performance, a fantastic physical keyboard and a long-lasting battery more than enough to win over one-time BlackBerry devotees and people who hate typing on touchscreens. And believe us - you will stand out among all those iPhone users! www.blackberrymobile.com
A GREAT SCENT
We have our own column for this to give you some ideas - but yes, you need your own scent. Or, better, scents. You need a different scent for the seasons. Something heavier for the colder months, something fresh for spring and summer. You have Old Spice? Or Drakkar Noir? Hey, that’s why we try to help!

DADS
IN THE
INFORMATION
T
ERA
by David Trifunov
The first person who came to mind when I was asked to write about “modern dads” was Jeff Hay. Most of you know him better as DJ Haymaker. My wife and I took our kids to one of Hay’s “Family Dances” at Parkinson Rec Centre. Hay also hosts Daddy-Daughter Dances, which is something I’ll no doubt become intimately acquainted with as the father of three girls under seven years old. Anyone who organizes a daddy-daughter day must know a thing or two about parenting. My hunch was correct. “I could talk for hours about this,” he said during our interview. It’s a fascinating topic, too, and something that appears to be gaining attention given Kelowna’s changing demographics and economy. We all know about the challenges Okanagan families face when it comes to cost of living. At the school our kids attend, you’ll meet parents who have changed their schedules because it’s nearly impossible for one breadwinner to pay for a mortgage, child care and other necessities. It’s meant parents are working from home (or trying to work). Others take night shifts and tag off when dad comes home and mom goes to work. Many of us are sacrificing annual holidays, second cars, cable TV or salon appointments to make ends meet. Our family does all of that and more. Hay says embrace it all, because you’re getting more in return. His career path “allowed a great freedom to go on field trips. To volunteer at the school, especially when the kids were younger.” Other than 110 DJ’ing events a year, he’s also completed a master’s degree in counselling psychology working with clients at Third Space Mind in the Landmark 2 building. Hay’s favourite space, however, might be alongside his kids on school field trips. With a flexible schedule, and a wife who works full-time as a high school teacher, Hay is free to spend more time with his kids than most might. “I see the kids off every morning,” he says. “I’m here most of the time after school for them. … In terms of work-life balance, it’s a different role.” But it’s a role that has increased steadily in Canada for the past 40 years. It’s not just mom who sacrifices her career to raise the children anymore. According to Statistics Canada, stay-at-home fathers accounted for 1 in 70 families in 1976. Today, that number is closer to 1 in 10. Yes, there are

a lot of us dads out there faced with a new reality. When I lost a job, we had serious decisions to make. Then, when our third child arrived, it made more sense for me to stay home with the kids and have my wife work full-time. The change has presented its challenges. I know the two years after my job loss I battled depression. I tried to do everything: cook, clean, raise kids, work… While that’s nothing new to generations of mothers, it’s something new for dads. Friends who find themselves in similar situations happily admit it’s about time men faced those problems. Joe Fries is a Penticton father of two, and said his mom “carried the mail, and everything else” when he was growing up. “The parenting expectations placed on dads are much higher now than they used to be, and rightfully so,” he said. Still, with that added responsibility, how are men maintaining their sense of self? My friend Sanj Juneja is a successful entrepreneur who lives in Atlanta. He suggested you don’t change who you are because you have kids. And, he added with emphasis, don’t listen to people who tell you it’s impossible.
troutwaters.ca bc interior's largest selection
“Do everything that you used to do prior to kids,” he said, through a Facebook message. “If you can incorporate your kids into your daily lives, they truly become a part of one’s self. If you enjoyed traveling to remote destinations, then continue to do so with your kids. You don’t ‘have to go on a Disney cruise’ because that is what society deems a kid-appropriate vacation.” Still, are we as men different after kids? My friend Sean Dawson says that while he notices vast differences between the Sean Dawson before kids, he doesn’t miss him. “I miss the things Sean-before-kids had time to do,” he said. “But, no, he was an inferior version to this rock of a provider you see before you today. I’m more patient than I was. Kids think we dads can do anything, and sometimes we believe it, too, which is nice.” If only there was someplace men could talk about being a 21st-century dad. Wait ... what? There is? But it’s in San Antonio, Texas? Hay urged me to attend Dad 2.0, a three-day conference that talks about all things fatherly. It’s aimed at bloggers, artists, and entrepreneurs – and the brands and businesses eager to reach them. This year it’s in Texas, but it travels across the United States. “It talks about the changing roles of fathers,” Hay said. “Our dad’s dad, to be father of the year back then, you just had to show up, throw a ball once in a while and make sure there was food on the table. Whereas now, that’s the bare minimum. You’ve got to be involved.” Really, it wasn’t that long ago men were roaming the halls outside the delivery room. That’s unheard of today. We’re better for it, Hay said. Eventually, we will drop the gender references attached to parenting altogether. Moms will be free to pursue their careers; dads won’t feel like they’re “not manly enough” because they can braid hair and bake muffins. It’ll just be “parents” raising kids. “For a lot of dads, they do want to be a more central figure,” he said. “It’s not mom stuff anymore.” Winter 2019

ADAM FOOTE THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAIL
Y
You’d think hockey would be all Adam Foote and his boys would talk about around the dinner table. Foote coaches his youngest son, Nolan, on the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets. His oldest son, Cal, is a first-round draft choice of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Foote is a retired pro himself. Really, what else would they talk about? Anything, says Foote. “We’ve only had one (hockey) discussion at home,” Foote said with a laugh. “We asked each other if it was OK to have it about the game. … It’s been great. He’s got to feel like he can get away from it, and everything is normal at home, and I’ve got to feel the same way.” Foote, 47, is a retired National Hockey League player who won two Stanley Cups and an Olympic gold medal. He played 20 professional seasons and was equally feared and respected during the entire time. After retiring in 2011, and taking some behind-the-scenes hockey jobs, he emerged this October as an early-season replacement for fired Rockets coach Jason Smith.

Winter 2019
Looking back, it shouldn’t have been entirely a surprise. The Rockets were struggling, and Foote was around Kelowna watching his sons. And, even though it’s his first head coaching job, Foote seems to be embracing the role. He won his first four games, and eventually five straight at home (as of this article’s deadline).
by David Trifunov
What’s his secret? “What I’m trying to tell the players is, they’re only going to have consequences for what they can control, and they can control their work ethic,” Foote said. “They can control how they take care of themselves. They can control their emotions.” He’s seen enough to feel encouraged about the team’s progress. “We’re probably further ahead now than I thought we would be,” said Foote, who spent most of his career with the Colorado Avalanche. “That shows, I think, we have better leadership in here than I originally thought. That’s a good sign.” Foote was brought in, partly, to help the Rockets improve as they prepare to host next year’s Memorial Cup national championship tournament.
understands that his role as coach is to help these teenagers and young men — the Rockets are between 17 and 20 years old — prepare for their next phase in life, even if it doesn’t include hockey. “If you look at the best players, when you hear that term, ‘the puck always follows them around,’ they’re working back,” Foote said. “They’re working hard. That’s not even structure. That’s probably details.” You hear the word “details” a lot when you talk to Foote about life, family and hockey. It seems to be his mantra. “In junior, you’re hurting the player if you don’t teach him the details. … Also, in junior, we’re building these players for whether they’re going to move on in hockey or in life.”
Kelowna was taking too many penalties, and the team’s owner said they needed a coach with more “bite.”
Foot credits a man named Larry Windover, his minor hockey coach growing up in Whitby, Ont., for making an impression on him all these years later.
Foote certainly had that as a player. In 1,154 games as a professional, he scored 308 points, but also racked up more than 1,500 penalty minutes.
He also says it was his dad, Vernon, who shaped his character. Vernon Foote didn’t play or coach hockey, but he is a retired Toronto police officer.
But that doesn’t mean he’s pushing his players to be angrier or more physical.
“I think the biggest thing he gave me was, take advice from anybody, listen every day and keep learning every day,” Foote said. “He instilled that in me. … I feel like there’s something I can learn every day, which is
Foote said it hasn’t just been “X’s and O’s” of hockey that has made a difference. He

great. And it doesn’t matter if it’s from a 20-year pro or someone hanging around the rink.” It’s something Cal and Nolan have probably heard a few times growing up. But, again, it’s not always about hockey. Along with his wife, Jennifer, Foote has told their sons to view the world outside the hockey rink, too. “I’ve always told them, you have to go do something you have passion for,” Foote said. “It doesn’t matter what you do, there’s a lot of other people that have a passion for it, and their work ethic and desire to be there is huge. … Just go do something you love to do.” Maybe “life coach” can go alongside “hockey coach” for the former NHL stalwart? After 20 years living a pro hockey life, Foote joked that Jennifer really loves the idea of more winters at the rink. But, if he’s serious about the idea of a long, coaching career, it’s not a decision that’s been made already. “The working part is not a problem; the long days and the long hours. I love it; it’s fun. I don’t know how long I’m going to do it. I haven’t even thought about it, to tell you the truth. All I know is, I like it. I’m having fun. I have a lot energy.”

YOUR ? HAVE BUSINESS ? VALUE DOES
Retire to Costa Rica with the proceeds of your business sale. This is the objective for many baby boomer business owners in Canada and can be a reality. As a business broker, I see more expensive hobbies – or passion projects - than businesses. The hope is usually that one day the hobby turns a profit - but let’s be realistic and build on Nelson’s topic from last quarter: Not all businesses have value. Does yours? My definition of a business with value is,“an operating entity that undertakes the regular production and sale of goods and/or services to earn a reasonable profit and acquire wealth by satisfying human wants and needs”. Only 20% of Canadian businesses are sellable in their current condition. Are you one of the few innovative entrepreneurs who thinks outside the box, pushes boundaries, and discovers creative ways to solve pain points for your customers? Statistics say, “probably not” - But you can be. Take a step back from your business and consider these 10 CRITERIAS THAT ADD VALUE TO A BUSINESS: 1. It satisfies needs, desires, or gaps. The business should address what people want, need, or struggle with. Only 53% of businesses actually solve problems. Ask yourself: Does your business materially improve people’s lives? 2. It has 3-5 years of increasing revenues, profits, and cashflow. There should be proven repeatability and a proven market. Buyers and lenders must prove financial sustainability. 3. There is a management team in place. Owners should be able to step away from the
82

business and it still operates efficiently. Not all small businesses are large enough to afford this, but it can dramatically affect value.
4. There is asset value & equity. Buyer Financing success rate is higher if there are more assets to secure. In such cases, lenders will usually provide a higher Loan to Value ratio. 5. It includes Intellectual property. This can provide higher asset & enterprise value. It also carves a market niche and often guarantees future income (design, patent, contracts, etc.). 6. The property is owned by the business owner and leased back to the business. Owners can facilitate buyer financing by reducing the Debt Service Coverage Ratio with escalating lease rates instead of a 5-year fixed rate. Negotiating into the lease a “Right of First Refusal” for the buyer to purchase property will provide additional incentive to complete the purchase for a higher value. 7. It uses Human Resources efficiently. Employment “spreads the cheddar around,” which is great; however, as a business owner, it is advisable to follow “Lean”, “Kaizen”, “Six Sigma” or other operating principles to improve processes and you will often eliminate unnecessary positions through efficiency and technology. 8. It relies on a broad customer base. The fewer the customers, the more they control you instead of the other way around. Having many customers reduces cashflow fluctuation risk. This is especially true in Oil/Gas, Mining, Aerospace, Transportation, Agriculture, Tourism, etc. 9. Its inventory value is as low as possible to maintain an efficient operation. It is rare for inventory to be well leveraged in the financing process. We see 10% - 75% L/V ratio depending on the product (i.e. serial numbered or loose) and it’s usually done with a line of credit instead of a loan. Inventory management is critical especially
when dealing with high value items (i.e. Jewelry, medical devices, high end appliances, etc.) 10. There are few discretionary expenses. These are personal expenses run through the business to reduce taxable income and to receive ownership perks. This reduces the quality of the financial statements affecting enterprise value and buyer skepticism. The biggest issue business owners face today is that they want to retire, but don’t know what their business is worth or how to get out of it successfully. A good Business Broker can provide owners with market data specific to their industry and realistic analyses of their business. Each business is unique and requires an individual approach to maximize the value and develop a strong business case for selling. Your Business Broker will provide advice and direction during the entire process and can help you to get the best value for your business.

The Gentleman
They should have taught you this in school....
by Dr. Christian Brix
Hold Your Own when Dining With Royalty In recent years, I have discovered a love for food. With that new appreciation for exciting flavours, varying textures, and unique combinations of rare ingredients, has come exposure to some of the finer dining establishments around the world. To be clear, I am still “frugal” at best, but more and more lately I have found myself open to the idea of splurging on a particularly artistic meal. The challenge at many restaurants is that one finds one’s self in front of a table setting that looks like a dishwasher’s nightmare. A dozen utensils, multiple plates and 4 glasses?! Below is a list of “classic” dining tips to help one feel more comfortable in a more formal dining setting. This will prepare you to dine with Royalty (almost).
- Elbows on the table is acceptable at all times except when you are actually eating, so you can tell your mom that the queen would be fine with it. - When eating soup, spoon the soup away from you towards the centre of the bowl (this one I cannot get my head around, but it’s the rule). - At a less formal dinner, when serving dishes are being passed, always pass to the right. - When you have finished your meal, you can indicate this by placing your utensils on the plate with the base at 5:00 and the tips at 11:00. Do not leave a soup spoon in the bowl, but rather place it on a small plate or the saucer under the soup bowl. - Bread: if the bread needs to be cut, use the napkin to hold the loaf while you cut a piece. Place the bread and butter on your butter plate, break off a small bite-sized piece of the bread, and put a small amount of butter on it. - Always pass the salt and pepper together. - Packaging from sugar, cream, or cracker packets should be crumpled tightly and placed under the rim of your plate. Be prepared for a server to serve food from your left and drinks from your right. - When a toast is offered to you, do not drink to yourself. Smile politely instead.
- When dealing with all the utensils, the basic rule is to work from “outside to in” as the courses are delivered. The ones you need first will be on the outside. - The napkin goes on your lap (do it yourself unless the person who sat you wants to do it… creepy and fancy at the same time!). The napkin should go on your chair when you are temporarily excusing yourself from the table, and then be placed neatly to the left of your setting on the table when you are completely finished with the meal. - Don’t start eating until all guests have received their food (unless there are more than 8 people at a table in which case those on either side of you should have their food). If there is a host, it is traditional to wait for the host to begin before you do. - Food is to be removed from your mouth the same way it was introduced. So if you put an olive in your mouth with your fingers, then you can remove the pit with your fingers as well. If you used your fork to eat the olive… best of luck extracting the pit with it!

- Tipping: 20% to a server (unless the service is bad), $1 per drink to a bartender, nothing to a maître D’ unless a special accommodation was made, 10% for take-out, and always tip on what the bill would have been before any gift cards or discounts. Poet and Playwright Oscar Wilde said “The world was my oyster but I used the wrong fork.” Certainly your life will likely go on as normal should you forget one of these rules, but there is something classy about doing it properly. Perhaps the best part is the joy you get judging the Neanderthals who don’t even know how to properly angle their utensils at the end of their meal. Embarrassing! (That was sarcasm for all you “I want to speak to the manager” types who might email me.). Bon Appétit.

100 A DAMN! + HEROES WHO DON’T GIVE
I
n November, 100+ Men Who Give A Damn!, a local “non-organization” relaunched and changed their group name to 100+ Heroes Who Give A Damn!. The name-change may sound small, but it is making an invaluable and meaningful impact on our community.
100+ Men Who Give a Damn! originally launched in August of 2015 and was founded by two humble guys by the names of Chris Wills and Brett Millard. Not at all looking to be in the spotlight, the founders along with Darryl Reuter and other founding committee members quietly grew the group membership from zero to hero in just three years. The concept was simple – 100+ Men showed up to a specified venue to donate $100 each, three non-profit charities pitched their story on why their charity deserves the donations raised throughout the evening, and based on majority votes, one charity was awarded the full amount. The men gathered quarterly for three years and injected over $200,000 back into our community. We’ll pause for a moment to let that soak in —— over $200,000 raised and donated by a few men who simply just gave a damn! The 100+ Men Who Give A Damn! planning committee, comprised of ten like-minded men, have worked tirelessly to grow membership and continue to operate with no budget whatsoever. Not even a bank account- hence their reference of being a “non-organization”. The venue, food, marketing and time are all donated. With memberships growing to over 350 men, the guys started to ponder if they could do more? Almost simultaneously, women began to express an interest in the group. So why not get more damn heroes involved?! Seeing an opportunity to make an even greater impact in the

community, the planning team decided that everyone would be welcomed into the group. Dropping the word men, and replacing it with heroes is all it took to take the non-organization to a new level of charitable giving. The concept and simplicity remain the same, and the modest group of planning members has grown to include men and women. An October press release announcing the group’s format change quickly spread across Kelowna and on November 6th, when the 100 Heroes Who Give A Damn! had their first membership gathering, over 200 Superheroes showed up to the Kelowna Yacht Club to donate. The winning charity for the evening was the Child Advocacy Centre of Kelowna. Not yet built, the Child Advocacy Centre is a multi-disciplinary response centre to child abuse. If you’re reading about 100 Heroes Who Give A Damn! and you’re inspired to be an everyday Superhero as well, have no fear, bring your one-hundred dollar donation to the next 100 Heroes meeting on February 20th at the Jaguar & Land Rover dealership on Finns Road, Kelowna. You’ll leave the meeting grinning ear-to-ear knowing that every penny of your donation went to a meaningful, local cause. 100 Heroes Who Give A Damn! Planning Committee: Aaron Dow, Adria Perron, Crissy Rea, Cam McIntyre, David Pfuetzner, David Demers, David Miles, David Jones, Dustin Sargent, Holly Routley, Jason Wills, John Gary Alyward, Luc Laverdiere, Megan Shallow, Raquel Milliken, Ryan Dawes, Scott Millard. Apparently, I was destined to be The Okanagan Weekend’s wine columnist. While I’ve only been penning Fill ‘er Up for Icon’s sister publication for a year-and-a-half, I’ve been drinking, talking and writing about wine since I was 16. That’s right, it may be scandalous, but my parents started allowing me to join them in having a glass of wine with dinner as a teenager. As such, my appreciation for enjoying in moderation and pairing with food began early. Two of my first jobs in journalism were wine-related. While taking radio and television arts at Toronto’s Ryerson University, one of my first assignments at radio station CJCL was to cover the 1984 release of France’s trendy Beaujolais Nouveau at the tony Queen’s Quay liquor store. The next year, as a freelance radio reporter for CHAYFM in Barrie, Ont., I attended the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival. When I came to Kelowna in 1987 to work at SILK-FM (now EZRock), part of my job was covering what would prove to be the birth of the Okanagan’s modern wine industry. There were only about 15 wineries then, now there’s an astounding 300. 1994 saw me come to The Daily Courier as the business reporter. Wine is a business, so I continued to cover the industry in the news stories and columns I wrote over the next 23 years. In 2017, I took over the revamped Wine & Dine page in the The Daily Courier’s sister publication, The Okanagan Weekend. I love wine and I can write, but I don’t pretend to be a wine expert. Fill ‘er Up is, therefore, designed to be a completely unsnobby, weekly round up of personalities from the Okanagan’s wine scene, wine-related news and happenings and some tasting notes featuring wines you’ll, hopefully, want to try. Cheers. Steve MacNaull is the Kelowna Daily Courier’s and The Okanagan Weekend’s business & wine reporter and columnist.

hen Icon catches up with John Kot, he’s fresh off a trip to South Korea. “Hyundai picked its top eight dealers from each Canada, the U.S. and Mexico and we went to Hyundai headquarters in Korea for a North American summit,” said the owner of Kelowna Hyundai. “We discussed business and got a sneak peek at three new 2020 models that will come out later in 2019. It was great.” Those new models are the full-size crossover SUV Palisade, named after the Los Angeles neighbourhood, that can seat up to eight and replaces the Santa Fe XL; the Santa Cruz compact pick-up truck named after the California central coast city; and the small SUV that currently has the working name of QX.

“Hyundai has an exciting line up, that’s why we do so well in Kelowna,” said Kot. “Hyundai has

accolade based on customer satisfaction. “And we probably have the best data base and follow up out there,” said Kot. “We’re constantly in touch with our customers asking them how everything is and letting them know the best time to renew their lease or the best time to trade in their vehicle and get a new one.” Such an approach helps Kelowna Hyundai sell about 660 new vehicles and 580 used cars annually, which represents a brisk pace of more than 130 vehicle sales per month. The same mantra means strong sales at Kot’s other dealerships – used-car specialist Buy Direct Truck Centre, Penticton Nissan and Maple Ridge Hyundai. In fact, changes are afoot in Kelowna to accommodate the growth.
that’s close to their heart or employees getting together to pool their money to give a bigger donation to a certain charity.” Talk of the future makes Kot a little nervous. “I teeter on that all the time,” he said. “On the one hand, with all the success we’ve had I think we should be expanding. But, on the other hand, I think we should stay the same and focus on what we have.” The solution, for now, is to concentrate on the upcoming moves and construction of the new dealership buildings and continuing to do what they do best – sell cars to happy customers.
Kelowna Hyundai has outgrown its premises at 3260 Highway 97 North, which is east of Scandia Golf & Games. By 2021, a new, bigger, brighter Hyundai dealership will be built on the five acres Kot owns closer to the city at the corner of Highway 97 and Cary Road, near Leathead Road. That’s where Buy Direct Truck Centre is now. Buy Direct Truck Centre will move to a yet-to-bedetermined location. On the same site as the new Hyundai dealership, a separate Genesis dealership will also pop up. Currently, three sedan models in Hyundai’s luxury Genesis line up (G70, G80 and G90) are sold out of the Hyundai dealership. Genesis’ new, stand alone dealership will come just in time as the brand expands to seven models, including three different SUVs, an electric vehicle and sports car. Kot’s positive attitude, which permeates through all dealerships, departments and employees, is also a huge part of the auto group’s success. “I still have that excitement to walk into the dealership every morning and look forward to the work day,” he said. “I talk to all managers and employees about what’s coming up, all the wins and the challenges. And I call them challenges, not problems, because challenges can always be resolved.” Kelowna Hyundai is very much a family affair. While John’s wife, Trina, isn’t at the dealership daily she’s hard at work behind the scenes and Kot credits her an invaluable advisor. The couples 2nd oldest son, Jordan, 24 has worked his way up to Director of Operations for the Group and Kot calls him his “right-hand man.” Their daughter, Janessa, 22 is Finance Manager at Kelowna Hyundai. Their oldest son, Brandon, 26 also in the car business, is Sales Manager in Vancouver at a Chrysler Dealership. Their youngest, Logan, 9 is still a student so no position as of yet! Of all the philanthropy the Kot Auto Group does, Kot is particularly proud of Pay It Forward. The initiative sees the company give $500 to each of its 130 employees around Christmas to forward to their favourite charity. “It’s wonderful to see people Pay It Forward to a cause Winter 2019

the last word...
What We Love About The Okanagan Edited by Deborah Lampitt-McConnachie.
Insider information is everything! This issue the renown Michael J Ballingall, Senior VP Sales & Marketing for Big White Ski Resort talks us through some of the his favorite things about the resort, and the reasons why.
1
Des Schuman: I first met Des when Manager at Tramps Le Club in the Capri Hotel. This 6’'2 welldressed elderly gentleman walked up the stairs, asked me to turn down the music and bring him a bottle of Dom Perignon. He announced he had just purchased Big White Ski Resort and for the next 4 nights we had wonderful conversations about his family, his resort in Australia and how he was going to take his time and build a world class resort.
26
Snowshoe Sam's: In November of 1985, the famous local restaurant owner, Mr. Jim Nixon, offered me a Manager job at Snowshoe Sam's. The building had been closed for a number of years and he was running Whisky Jacks on the Perfection run and he leased Snowshoe Sam's from Des Schumann. Let the party begin. There's a few people still hanging around Big White who I worked with and/or served that very first year. I met my wife the next year and kissed her for the first time on the 4th step on the back stairs of Snowshoe Sam's.
3
The Australian Connection: I was one of the first Ski Instructors to go to Mount Hotham in Victoria, Australia in May of 1986. Jim Loyd, who is still working for Big White as our Sales Director, examined me for my Level 1 certificate which allowed me to get a Visa and travel to Australia. Mr. Schumann had started an exchange and to this day, we employ hundreds of Australians on working holiday visa’s.
4
5
Big Reds at Big White: This will be the 14th year of celebrating the Valley’’s best wine on one of the first weekends in December. But I have to tell you, the new Slopestyle event, hosted by our very own Tom Van Steenbergen, was pretty cool last July. We’’re going to add a music festival to it this July and at my age you’’re in awe of what the athletes are doing on the course, but more importantly, you’’re outside in the mountains; shorts, t-shirts, brews and burgers -– does it get any better?
7
Gun Barrel Coffee: After dinner it’s up the Gondola for a world famous Gun Barrel Coffee at Snowshoe Sam's. There's been many people film the Gun Barrel Coffee, which I helped invent in 1982 at the Gunbarrel Saloon at Apex Resort.
8
Blue Ribbon Run: I'm what you call a lazy skier. I like a carving ski so I can hold my speed and my favorite run by far is Blue Ribbon over on the Gem Lake, but it's got to be groomed to perfection and it's got to be a sunny day. As of this year, we will stop after the second run and have a BeaverTail at the West Ridge Warming Hut. That makes for a great few runs.
9
Clock Tower Coffee Co: located in Village Centre Mall, the coffee is unbelievable. It's managed by Wayne Bertrand, our former Patrol leader and Guest Service Manager. He has a great coffee shop in Vancouver called the Laughing Bean which he operates in the summer.
Kettle Valley Steakhouse: We do a lot of entertaining… - I mean A LOT of entertaining. When we’'re out to impress, it's always the Seafood Tower at the Kettle Valley Steakhouse, followed by the Tomahawk Steak shared amongst the guests.
The Woods Restaurant: My favorite thing apres ski is always the cheese fondue at The Woods with friends and plenty of Schnapps. You see, the cheese makes the atmosphere, the Schnapps in your ski boots gets you up dancing and if you really get crazy, you'll still be there when the lights turn on –- that's a good afternoon out.
10
South Facing Slopes: The one magic thing that people don't understand about Big White, is it's one of the only resorts in the world that has a South facing aspect. What that means is when you're skiing or riding your snowboard, the sun is always in your face. The snow is never icy and you're always looking at the views of the Rocky Mountains. Super Natural British Columbia never looked so good from 7,600ft. The best view? It’s obviously the top of the Cliff looking East to the Monashee Mountains.
