Wow, what an interesting project this magazine has become. From meeting new people and learning new things every day, to countless sleepless nights and incredible last minute developments, we have definitely been put through our paces during the production of this, the second issue of ICON Okanagan Magazine. Sudden and last minute changes can be disastrous when it comes to the production of a magazine, but we were lucky enough to learn that we can count on the community and the business people of the Okanagan no matter what. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to experience and learn about the Valley from this perspective, from events to businesses we have had the opportunity to meet some really great people and form lasting friendships – all the while doing what we love. Who’s Got The Moves? Which System is the Right One for You?

I

t was actually Nintendo who started a revolution with its Wii motion controllers some years ago, but more recently, Sony, and Microsoft have been catching-up, and running passed. Now, since the end of 2010, both systems have their own motion control system. So the question is – which one is better?

Well, don’t worry, your favourite magazine had the chance to have a closer look at both systems and we will try to shed some light on the situation. First, let’s let the numbers speak...Comparing the figures the Kinect is clearly dominating the market with more sales – and this despite the Playstation’s controller having a full month’s head start. But we should wait another couple of months to find out which system get’s

Microsoft Xbox KINECT

the People’s Choice Awards ;-) Both the Kinect and Sony’s Move are available to customers in the form of a bundle with the console included or just as an accessory if you already own the console (namely the Xbox 360 or the PS3). The biggest difference is that Microsoft’s Kinect uses a camera and microphone to map the players in front of the TV, so there are no controllers involved. You just move or talk with your console, that’s it. Does it really work? Yes, and it is terrific! You say a command and the Xbox travels through menus, loads, and pauses games. The camera (well...actually 3 cameras, a single color camera for image recognition, and two monochrome cameras placed a few inches apart to determine where you are in a three-dimensional space) has a visual recognition function so it can differentiate between players. What sets it apart from Sony’s Move is that your whole body is tracked (so in a soccer game you can kick a ball with your leg). The Pros: Totally hands-free and the voice control is very cool. You also only need Kinect itself for motioncontrolled multiplayer games; it doesn’t require additional controllers for additional players. The Cons: The system needs a lot of space; Microsoft recommends 6 to 8 feet between the Kinect sensor and the user. Also more expensive, but then again you don’t need additional controllers.

12

ICON OKANAGAN

Spring 2011

Sony Playstation Move

The PlayStation Move combines a video camera with a physical controller to map your location and moves. The “wand” (the controller) is tracked in three dimensions, while the glowing ball at the end is used to give the camera a visual reference for handling aiming, cursor movement, and other motions. The Pros: Very accurate motion tracking. You can also play some games sitting down, without having to move furniture out of the way first. Built-in Bluray player. Also plays 3D content. The Cons: Requires a wand, sometimes more, depending on the game, one for each player.

SO - WHICH ONE ? Well, in the end it’s a personal thing. The Playstation Move and Microsoft’s Kinect are two very different approaches to motion control gaming. It’s hands-on vs. hands-free. So the question is – what type of gamer are you? Are you the more serious gamer – then we would recommend Sony’s Move. It’s more mature, the games are more technical, and the skill level is a little higher. The Kinect is more “Arcade-y” and better suited for some family fun gaming. Spring 2011

Whoever said bigger isn’t better? The way things are going nowadays everyone and everything seems to be downsizing and that definitely applies to the automotive industry. Yet for one company in particular this seems to be a point of contention. New for 2011 Mini is offering their largest ever vehicle – the Countryman and Countryman ALL4.

Now, saying the “largest” vehicle can be a little misleading as we are talking about Mini here. The Countryman is the only 4 door car in Minis line up and is most definitely bigger than anything else available from them. At the same time it is comparable to a Volkswagen Golf in width and a Honda Fit in length. Mini has added 6 inches in height, about 16 inches in length, and roughly 5 inches has been added to the wheelbase. One thing is for sure, this new model is definitely different and in our opinion it is hot. The taller ride height combined with more aggressive styling really works here. For the most part Mini has maintained the sporty styling and incredible handling characteristics that we have all come to expect from this manufacturer.

“The taller ride height combined with more

aggressive styling really works here”

Countryman is the availability of the ALL4 all-wheel drive system. Mini considers the vehicle a cross-over and in our experience the Mini Countryman ALL4 Cooper S was more of a soft roader than an off roader but the added all-wheel drive system does offer the driver a little more confidence in winter and less than optimal road conditions. It is a welcome addition in our opinion.

With 4 doors and 4 bucket seats the Mini fits 4 adults very comfortably, with all the amenities and exceedingly more than one has come to expect of a modern vehicle. In the front the Mini’s entertainment system and driver information console is housed in the centrally mounted speedometer. This system is incredibly easy to use with the small console joystick and it integrated seamlessly with our iPhone 4. Not only were all of our tracks, videos, and audio books readily available in a very intuitive display the Mini also makes use of Twitter, Facebook, and RSS feeds. All you have to do is download a free program called Mini Connected and hook up your iPhone using the typical USB cable and you are ready to roll. It is fantastic. This center unit also houses the navigation system as well as a vehicle information hub that tells you your fuel level, the dates for all of your upcoming services, and a whole whack of other information at a glance. Perhaps the most interesting addition to the new Spring 2011

Two pipes - yes, it’s the Cooper S !

As for storage the Countryman offers a fairly impressive 40 cubic feet in the back with the two rear seats folded down and roughly 16 cubic feet with them up but the coolest thing in terms of storage space is Mini’s new rail system. Straight through the center of the vehicle Mini has mounted a customizable rail system that allows for a www.icon-okanagan.com

Miracle or Mirage? Welcome to Mirror Image Auto

We walked in here thinking it was just going to be another typical shop. Boy were we wrong, a little off the beaten path, Mirror Image Auto is a gem hidden in South East Kelowna. The guys here are ready to provide your vehicle with the utmost care and attention. It is like a dream day at the spa for your car. Providing an endless list of services from incredible custom audio/video installations and designs, remote starters, and detailing packages, to the application of an absolutely astonishing product called X-Kote, Mirror Image Auto is ready for anything. Being the exclusive dealer of X-Kote in Kelowna, this is the only place you can see this amazing product in action in the Valley.

So what is this stuff?

“In 2004, after many years of research, development and extensive testing, X-kote Paint Renewal Systems introduced to the world, the very first hand applied Polyurethane clearcoat. Yes, an actual Automotive/Marine clearcoat that is applied by hand. X-kote is similar in nature and chemistry to today’s clearcoats that are sprayed on. The key to this unique technology is not only X-kote’s ability to self level completely flat when applied by hand, but X-kote’s proprietary chemical adhesion process. Typical, clearcoats

that are sprayed on adhere mechanically, meaning they rely on a sanded or scuffed surface to adhere. Without this sanding or scuffing process, the clearcoat will delaminate or peel off. X-kote adhesion however, is a chemical process. This type of adhesion is much stronger, and allows for application without sanding or scuffing. It is also 100% consistent, meaning there are no weak points such as around key cylinders or door handles, as

you would have with a mechanical adhesion.” This seems almost too good to be true, but no, it gets better. They can not only restore your paints lustre and shine and create a thicker clearcoat with UV protection for you, but because most paints used in today’s cars are comprised of two stages; a base coat and a clear coat, 18

Spring 2011

X-Kote restores the look of depth to your vehicles paint as well. If you do not happen to have a two stage paint though, don’t worry X-Kote creates an incredible wet look comparable to none. It is also 100% body shop compatible and can be painted over. This product is not limited to cars either, it can be applied to boats, RV’s and even airplanes, often restoring the paints to better than new condition. “In today’s green conscious world, X-kote is an incredibly efficient and green alternative to re-spraying. As X-kote is hand applied and not sprayed, coverage is maximized and wastage is greatly minimized. An entire panel such as a bumper, can be completely covered with less than an ounce of X-kote. This is a small fraction of the amount of clearcoat you would need to spray that same panel, resulting in far less harmful greenhouse causing V.O.C.’s being emitted into the atmosphere.”

come check out Mirror Image Auto and pamper your car today. Treat your vehicle to the fantastic Spring Breakout Package that offers a full exterior wash, paint polish, exterior trim dressing, wheel and tire dressing, vacuuming and spot clean, window cleaning, Zexx coating, along with a free X-Kote evaluation for a price that just can’t be beaten. After telling us about X-Kote Andy from Mirror Image grabbed what looked to be a spray bottle and sprayed a few times into the air...to our surprise it was an awesome smelling designer cologne. But, in a spray bottle? Well, Andy explained that this is a product called “Zexx” and it is a carnauba wax with a designer cologne smell. A Liaison at Cannery Coffee

It is one of the best things in the world when you find a great place meet and hang out. A place where you are comfortable to go about your business, meet clients, hang out with friends, and enjoy your time in relaxed environment. It is even better when that place comes equipped with a friendly staff and an owner that will call you by name, and even sit down to have a chat. At ICON we’ve been searching for a place like that for quite a while now, and thank god we have finally found it. “That place” is Cannery Coffee. Obviously in our line of work it has been a priority to find a place that serves incredible espresso, coffee, tea, and great food, as nearly all of our meetings take place outside the office, and of course delectable pastries are always a reason to get out. At Cannery Coffee, Shirley Gingras has created an environment that is conducive to productivity and networking while maintaining a very homey and comfortable atmosphere that truly entices one to return. With a wide selection of delicious espresso based gourmet coffee drinks, teas, and coffee everyone can find a 24

drink to match their taste without breaking the bank. Cannery also offers a variety of delicious espresso blends to pick up and take home with you. Finding one that suits your palette is just a taste away. With only the highest quality beans the decision should not be too hard You can also hop in for a quick snack. Shirley has en-

sured that there is a nice variety of in house made wraps, sandwiches, soups, pastries, brownies, and several gluten free options. Our favourite is the “California Panini which is a delicious combination of turkey breast, avocado, tomato, mayonnaise, and Swiss cheese on a multigrain bread, served with your choice of either pita chips or veggies.

The talented barristas at Cannery Coffee really know their craft!

There is always something going on at Cannery Coffee and Shirley has mentioned to us many a time that there is a load of great local talent here in the Valley. Often she will bring in local artists from all walks of life to perform for crowds of excited patrons, and with the state of the art sound system in the space it is easy to enjoy the great entertainment. The next time you are around make sure to stop in and grab a drink or stick around and have a bite, you will see why we enjoy this place so much, and hey, you will most likely run into us too!

ICON Okanagan on Tour MINI Countryman Launch MINI Kelowna, January 18th On Tuesday January 18th the MINI dealership in Kelowna celebrated the arrival of the first-ever MINI with four doors. We already had a chance to check out the Countryman a couple of days from before, but for most guests it was the premiere. The whole building, which usually houses the BMW dealership as well, had been converted to a MINI showroom with the various models, from the regular MINI, to the convertible, Clubman and the new Countryman. The mix between the “classic concept” and a modern “Sports Activity Vehicle,” as MINI calls the Countryman, was an instant hit that night and with “Tarzan Dan” as the MC it was a fun night, too. Wine lovers (so us ...) could sample reds and whites at Quail’s Gate’s wine tasting station and the crew at MINI Kelowna provided the necessary sustenance.

1) “Tarzan” Dan Freeman 2) Tim, Lana, and Noah 3) Riley and Christina 4) Dave, Cliff, Quincy, Tracy 5) Robb and Lindsay 6) Jen & Rob 7) Claire, Amanda, and Gord

Yep, we had a great time and truly enjoyed the evening. 1 Check out our test drive in this issue and drop by the dealership to find out more about the other models.

With evening slowly setting in and a calm crisp breeze whispering through the trees my decent down the hill and eventual arrival here at 2600 Dubbin is rather awe inspiring. An incredible structure stands here. A foreign combination of metals, concrete, glass, and acrylics, the home is nestled into the side of the hill, overlooking beautiful lake Okanagan, it is a collaboration between nature and architecture that unites with an inexplicable success. This home attempts to fuse its beautiful natural forested surroundings with the interior of the home without ever committing and letting nature in. A curious synthesis of hard edges, and curved surfaces, the structure cannot be any more alien to its surroundings here, yet somehow while accepting the elements around it and welcoming them to become a part of the experience it stands proud and fits in here more comfortably than anyone could ever imagine. As we move towards the building it becomes clear that we are really in for a treat. To our right directly behind a large set of aluminum framed glass doors lay the garage, showered with the late afternoon sun as it drops behind the mountain it seems more of an oasis for its mechanical companions rather than a crude and basic vehicular storage space. 28

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

To our immediate left is a spectacle to be sure, with the wind picking up, the sound of the rushing water as it kicks up against the side of the wharf reminds us that we were entirely enveloped by the Valley’s most beautiful offerings, the forested hillside and the incredible and powerful Okanagan Lake. Moving around the exterior of the home it is apparent that we are about to explore Spring 2011

two distinct living spaces, two structures divided from one another but also connected by a breathtaking water feature that runs between the structures and further integrates the elements into the home. As we turn around, directly in front of us is an infinity edge pool, terminating just as the edge aligns with the lake in front of it creating an intimate connection that truly illustrates the way this home works in synergy with nature. definitely imagine climbing into bed turning on the fireplace and listening to the wave’s crash against the shore as you fall asleep. Behind the dividing wall that separates the bedroom from the ensuite we are met with another large open space saturated in plenty of natural light as the sun slowly moves into hiding. Here with a free standing bath and an exceptionally large two person shower complete with body soakers and the all the expected amenities one can definitely enjoy a spa getaway in their own home.

Through to the great room we find ourselves in a relaxing environment with plenty of space to lounge and enjoy the modern artworks or just lay by the fire while staring out over the lake. Oh my, life is tough. Moving onwards, we are struck by a quick flash from a small screen imbedded in the wall. With typical curiosity and obvious interest we thoroughly inspect the unit uncovering it’s secrets. It turns out this particular unit is not unique and several are placed throughout the home in order to control it.

Omitting the elevator and taking the stairs instead, we are led down to the main level where open and airy is the name of the game. Sharing this floor are the kitchen, dining room, and great room. All spaces, although surrounded by glass and metal, have somehow achieved a level of intimacy that is unmatchable in homes of a much more traditional inspiration and design.

You see, this house is a true smart home. Each panel allows it’s user to check the date, weather, and time – to start – they are also able to check out all of the security cameras throughout the home, turn each and every fireplace on and off, control all the lights in the home, open and close the entry gate, listen to several different music devices, or just turn the waterfall on and off. The home can literally be controlled from one small panel.

The kitchen, fully equipped for top chef culinary competitions, is also bathed in fading sun light from the surrounding windows and even offers a massive 60” fridge to store whatever you desire, and about as much of it as you could ever want. 30

Astonished at the convenience of this panel we quickly moved down to check out the last of the living spaces in the main home. Straight ahead from the bottom of the stairs we are met with a wonderful entertaining Spring 2011

they are two floors away so you won’t even know they are there. Now, in the event that the mother in law and her new boyfriend are coming to stay for a week, or two, this place has got you covered as well. Separated from the main home by a waterfall wall is the guest home structure. This space is fully self sustaining. With a beautiful living room that looks over the lake, a full feature kitchen, and a master suite complete with an elegant ensuite upstairs, your company can stay as long as they want with luxury accommodations and you never even have to worry

about them. Completing our tour, we walk back to the main home through the garden bridge that lays atop the water fall wall. To our surprise there is one last space to check out. A staircase leads underground to an old reclaimed door with a massive iron slide lock. As we pull the lock back and the clinking of metal on metal give way to a creak as the door pushes open, we find ourselves in a beautiful wine cellar, with enough storage for any wine connoisseur and space specifically dedicated for wine tasting, this was quite a final surprise.

Spring 2011

As the last rays of sunlight fade behind the mountains, we complete our tour and reluctantly move back towards our cars. Unfortunately, this is a fantasy that has to end for us, but for some lucky owner this is an everyday reality, a paradise nestled between the forest and the lake surrounded by beauty and effortlessly connected to nature.

When I got the call to check out Sukho Thai Restaurant in West Kelowna I was thrilled. Not only do I live on the Westside, I am also a big fan of Thai cuisine and I needed a good place for a business meeting anyways. Ok, I was pretty hungry, too. The emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong and often spicy aromatic components is right up my alley, and I have already heard a lot of good things about this fairly new restaurant. George Hakim and his wife Lamphaen opened Sukho Thai, which translates to “Dawn of Happiness”, little over a year ago in the Vintage View Mall right across

Thai food is getting more and more popular. For a reason. It is about the fantastic flavour and the typical taste senses, ranging from spicy to sour, sweet and salty. At Sukho Thai they offer a great variety of signature dishes. We finally decided on the Tom Ka Gai (chicken coconut soup) and the Sukho Thai Spring Rolls as

from the Best Western. George is a long-time West Kelowna resident and business owner, and his wife Lamphaen brings years of experience, home-country skills, and more important, all of her family recipes to the kitchen.

appetizers, with the Pad Thai (fried noodles with shrimp, chicken, bean sprouts and roasted peanuts) and the Gang Dang (Bamboo shoots in a fiery red curry sauce with coconut milk) as the main course. With some “extra heat”, of course! Delicious!

The restaurant is outfitted with trendy urban decor and typical Asian influences. The big bamboo-bar, Buddha figurines, water features, along with the unique music will make your visit a memorable one. In the summer you can enjoy the warmth of the sun on the outside patio as well.

Make sure you stop by and enjoy the fresh authentic cuisine, the drive is definitely worth it !

“It’s all about freshness”, explains George when he sat down with me. “We only use the best ingredients, all free of chemicals and MSG and all of our dishes are only prepared when your order them. Even if you order a soup - you can be assured it is not pre-made 34

but is made when the order gets in.”

Hot New Drivers for 2011 NIKE VR PRO

A

A - Nike Golf has taken full advantage of technology in the premium driver category. The new VR Pro driver is the latest addition to the premium VR line. It features a new Variable Compression Channel, which increases speed at impact in more spots on the clubface. The driver has a pearshaped Tour-driven head, which allows for more weight at the optimal center of gravity (CG) locations and delivers a hotter launch with optimal spin for the game’s best players. www.nike.com

B - TAYLORMADE R11 DRIVER

No doubt, this eye-catching new driver will provide a “wow”, but one that, according to the company, also serves a purpose. TaylorMade’s first 3D Driver features Flight Control Technology (FCT), Adjustable Sole Plate Technology(ASP) and Moveable Weight Technology (MWT). Huh? Well, let’s just say all of it gives you the most forgiving and technically advanced driver they have ever produced! It also offers excellent adjustability which contributes to straighter, longer drives.

fore!

[

[

“Fore!” is shouted as a warning during a golf game when it appears possible that a golf ball may hit other players or spectators.

Is it time to try something new off the tee? How about a new driver? If you are an avid golfer, you know that a driver is the most important item in your golf kit. The right driver in your hands can make your game , an accurate drive can make the rest of the hole seem easy.

C - CALLAWAY DIABLO OCTANE DRIVER

No wonder this is one of the hottest new drivers for 2011: It’s been developed in conjunction with Automobili Lamborghini! Wohoo! A new material called Forged Composite is used in this drivers crown, which does not only make it lighter (the clubhead weighs less as 195 grams) but also stronger than its all titanium predecessors. And don’t worry - it retains an extremely high MOI.

C’mon - this is a must pick! www.callawaygolf.com

If you want to be on top of the trends in golf apparel there are a couple of things to look for. First of all it is all about ecofriendly or organic fabrics. Next are patterns. Stripes, checks, polka dots and argyle continue to be important in the golf apparel market but we also see bright colours to be a trend in 2011. Watch for fabrics with a UV-Protection and stylish hats to cope with our hot summers here in the Okanagan.

2011 FORD EXPLORER EXPLORE THE ELEMENTS Wow, now this is what we call a cool new look! For 2011 the Ford Explorer was subject to a complete makeover, and quite frankly, it was time for it. The design team at Ford did their homework and came up with a very fresh and distinctive new look, and in a way we would almost call it Range Rover-esque. I remember the first pictures that we received several months ago so we couldn’t wait to get ourselves behind the steering wheel of one the first cars that arrived at Orchard Ford. The weather was perfect for a test drive, relatively mild for the end of January with enough snow for a quick off-road drive. The first thing that we noticed when we left the lot was the quiet ride. The new Explorer has a uni-body platform, and road and wind noise barely penetrate the cabin at all. Great

finish to more expensive SUVs. No question - this 2011 Ford Explorer is definitely the most desirable model ever and one of the most modern SUVs out there. It rides more like a car, is more efficient, and hey, you can even talk to it!

– this way we could truly enjoy the amazing sound from Ford’s “MyFord Touch” entertainment and communications system, which even follows your verbal instructions to keep your eyes on the road. It will play your music from your iPod, connects to your cell phone via Bluetooth, displays your personal photos and can even connect to the internet to create a Wi-fi hot spot for passengers!

Prices for the Explorer start at $29,999 for the base model with front-wheel drive and our fully loaded “Limited” 4x4 came in at around $56,000.

Our fully loaded “Limited” model also had the two configurable displays in the instrument cluster, the optional technology package with park assist, collision warning and the Blind Spot Information System, the Luxury Seating Package with power folding 3rd row seats (seating for 7 is standard), a DVD Family Entertainment system with 2 screens and 2 wireless headphones, voice-activated Navigation and, last but not least, a dual-panel moonroof.

Angeles, and the Sunday night dinner tables of Oaxaca. Handmade soft corn tortilla shells are the base for the seven varieties of taco on the menu. Roasted vegetables provide a flavourful vegetarian option, while carnivores can go for the grilled steak, roasted pork, or chicken options. Prawn and Cod tacos round out the roster, fried up in a glutenfree batter to keep the menu diet friendly to as many guests as possible. Any of the homemade salsas really round out the taco experience, allowing guests to control the “heat” of their meal, from pico de gallo mild up to habanero hot! After a plate of tacos it is time to move on to a half chicken molé, carne asada dinner, chili relleno or a number of enchiladas and combos. A couple of tasty salads, tortilla soup, and quesadillas round out the menu. Homemade stocks and roasted full cuts of pork and chicken lend huge flavour to the secret recipes Chef Chris managed to pry from his Mexican mentor!

Spring 2011

For some reason none of this seems complete without a beverage to remind you of the allure of Mexico. Cold beer or an icy margarita? Either way the heat being delivered from the kitchen needs a soothing compliment. While you can’t go wrong with one of the Mexican beers available, you really should start out with a margarita...the No. 34 to be exact. An unlikely blend of tequila, avocado and cilantro, the No. 34 is smooth, savoury, and the perfect start to an evening.

60’s movie posters makes for a good time. Come summertime the large sets of front doors will be wide open letting the warm summer air in and allowing the smells and sounds to reach the street. Throw in a Mexican rapper sampling a Bob Dylan song and lunch or dinner is all of the sudden a very memorable experience. 279 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna (778) 478-0330

Hester Creek Estate Winery Mediterranean Oasis in the Golden Mile “Amazing”. This was my first thought upon entering Hester Creek Winery`s new wine shop. A large open room with high ceilings, Mediterranean-influenced colors and materials with big windows providing lots of natural lighting. It immediately gives you a warm and welcome feeling and invites you to taste the wines and browse through the beautiful glassware and accoutrements in the shop. Mark Sheridan, the General Manager, must have read my mind as he welcomed me with a big smile. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Yes, Mark, it is! Hester Creek Estate Winery is situated in the South Okanagan within the heart of vineyard land known as the “Golden Mile”. Just minutes south of Oliver the area is literally covered with vineyards and was given its name because of the location, providing ideal wine growing conditions with temperatures significantly warmer than at the bottom of the valley. Hester Creek is part of the 50

rich history of the area with their first vineyards planted back in 1968. Joe Busnardo, the land owner, had brought dozens of varieties to try, including some from his native Italy. day, unique to Hester Creek in the South Okanagan Valley. A new chapter of Hester Creek was written in 2004 when Curt Garland purchased the winery. New to the wine industry, he quickly assessed the property’s needs and set out to refurbish the vineyards and transform the brand “Hester Creek.” Curt also hired winemaker Rob Summers from Niagara, who brought with him the experience and knowledge he gathered at some of the best known wineries in Ontario. But that wasn’t all. Curt Garland had a vision for the property. The Golden Mile Bench reminded him of articles and stories of the Mediterranean with its dry grasslands, olive trees, orchards and vineyards. The idea for “The Villa” was born, and it didn’t take him long to have a road cut into the mountain side to create a site with a majestic view of the vineyards and the valley. In 2007 “The Villa” with its six luxury guest suites opened its doors at the western edge of the property, offering a world-class guest experience.

We are now in Hester Creek’s “demonstration kitchen” which is part of the guest centre. Here you can experience wine the way it was meant to be enjoyed: With fabulous foods, in the company of your friends, or other wine and food connoisseurs. Regularly, chefs from all over the province visit the winery to lead guests through luscious meals in some very exclusive cooking classes. What a wonderful idea! The gorgeous “Executive Barrel Room and Dining Room” is part of the guest centre as well and the perfect venue for meetings and gatherings. It also offers a private patio with a fireplace and spectacular views of the valley. The Tuscan-inspired “Board Room” rounds off the guest centre and is the ideal place for a small corporate retreat.

“The vision was to offer our guests an all-inclusive experience”, Mark explains while showing me the brand-

“What makes this area so special are the beautiful summers”, Mark daydreams on our way to their newest venture, “and so we decided to have an outdoor amphitheatre to celebrate another form of art - music!”. The theatre is nestled amongst the vineyards and yes, it too offers stunning views of the valley below. “If you do it, do it right!”, Mark smiles. We are now in front of what looks like a new building, but

cuisine while savouring Hester Creek’s wine offerings. And yes, the vine-covered patio offers some amazing views. What a great way to complete the Hester Creek experience!

First is a brand-new and very elegant label. The bottles also have a brand-new back label with easy to read symbols guiding the buyer to the flavour profile and food pairings. Oh, and they even conquered the digital world with the all so popular “ScanLife” coding where you use your SmartPhone to scan a code for additional information. Pretty cool! Three new wines now complete the Hester Creek family of premium wines: The “Character White”, a blend of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Trebbiano – all

The heart of the winery is a new building, buried partially in the hill to take advantage of the natural temperature control of the earth. The cellar room itself is completely underground and the site’s natural vegetation has been restored on the top of the building. We conclude our tour in the tasting room, where Mark introduces me to the new look of Hester Creek Estate Winery. 52

grown on the Golden Mile Bench; the “Character Red”, which includes Merlot, Syrah, Malbec and Petit Verdot, combined to create a unique lively, fruit-driven wine with a strong sense of place, and finally “The Judge”, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with great aromas of spice, berries and herbs.

“I’m not interested in following a recipe; my philosophy is to let the grapes express themselves”. Robert Summers A wonderful visit to an exceptional winery has come to an end – for now. No doubt we will be back for a wine tasting, a concert, or one of their cooking classes! Please visit the Hester Creek website www.hestercreek.com for a calendar of events and activities:

Barbequed Salmon, Warm Goat Cheese Salad, and Lemon Curd Wine Pairing: Hester Creek 2009 Pinot Blanc

Barbequed salmon “Ecki’s Way” My dear friend shared this technique with me, and it always is a hit. Simple and easy. I remember Ecki every time I make it. Method On top of the underside of a large cookie sheet, spread out a large piece of tin foil. Lay the salmon on top and gently roll the edges of the foil up to form sides around the fish. Pour lemon juice and oil over and sprinkle with Ingredients: salt and pepper. In a separate dish, coat the onions with oil. (serves 8) Large salmon fillet, 2½ – 3lbs. Heat grill to medium heat, slide the foil plate of fish onto the barbeque ½ cup fresh lemon juice and grill until the edges of the fish start to caramelize (around 20 mins). ½ cup extra virgin oil Grill the onions a couple of minutes before the fish is done, for about 3 salt & pepper mins. until caramelized. 4 cups baby spinach 2 bunches green onions Slide the fish back onto the cookie sheet and transfer it to a bed of baby 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil spinach. Garnish with grilled onions and sprinkle with fresh dill. 1 bunch fresh dill, chopped Enjoy!

Warm Goat cheese salad with maple Balsamic

Okanagan Waldorf Salad Method So simple, crunchy and classic! Just toss the salad in dressing and serve alone or on beds of spinach. That’s it!

Method To make vinegrette, mix all together except for oil until well blended. Add the oil in a steady stream until smooth. Mix the breadcrumbs, salt and pepper in a bowl. Put the egg mixture in another small bowl. Slice the goat cheese into 8 portions and shape them into “patties”. Dip them into the egg and coat with the breadcrumbs. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. (You can do this early in the day) Heat the vegetable oil over medium heat in a sautépan. Add the goat cheese and brown on both sides (you can do this in batches). Toss the dressing with the greens and fruit and divide them onto 8 plates. Place cheese on each and sprinkle nuts on top.

My mother’s lemon Curd Method In a small pot over medium low heat, melt butter and sugar, whisk in juice, zest, and eggs and whisk until thickened (about 10 mins). Cool and pour into a jar. Stores well for about 1 week in the fridge. Lovely in prebaked mini tart shells, garnished with seasonal fruit. There are so many ways to enjoy this - just experiment! A Visit to Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan How can you not love the Okanagan? We have the best of both worlds right at our doorstep. From beautiful beaches, wineries, and orchards to ski resorts, great restaurants, fine arts, and shopping, it’s all just a short drive away. One of our most recent and most beautiful trips was to Carmelis Goat Cheese on Timberline Road at the far end of Lakeshore Road. Wait – there is a goat cheese maker in the Okanagan? Yes, there is! Ofri and Ofer Barmor left their home country of Israel for a safer life for themselves and their two daughters in early 2003. Here in Kelowna they made their dream of owning a farm in the Okanagan come true. Even when, just a few months later, the Okanagan Mountain Fire burned down their new farm, their determination and great spirit allowed them to survive the setback and rebuild the barns, aging cellar, and visitor’s center. Finally! Carmelis Goat Cheese, the Okanagan’s first artisan cheese-making operation, was born. The Barmors were not strangers to the business, back in Israel they had a herd of 600 goats, a dairy plant, cheese shop and a restaurant, and so naturally it came that they would make goat cheese here in the valley. It is wine country after all, and what goes better with wine than cheese? “Carmelis”, which combines the names of their daughters Carmel and Lior, is now home to 25 goats and two very happy “billies”. “We have 3 differ-

ent breeds here”, Ofri explains, “the French Alpine, the Toggenburg, and La Mancha, all of them have been selected because the milk does not have an overly “goaty” sent or taste.” When we visited the farm in mid February the baby goats were just 3 weeks old and Ofer, the master craftsman at Carmelis, had just started the production of this year’s cheese. All of their cheeses, he tells us, are made from 100% goat milk produced on their farm as well as from milk they buy from an organic goat farmer in Westbridge. Ofer learned his skills in Europe, mainly in France, and is now a master himself, knowing all about the history and techniques behind his craft. As far as history is concerned, we learn that humankind has been making cheese for thousands of years and the production of goat cheese was likely one of the first processes developed by nomadic cultures in order to preserve food and milk without refrigeration. Even today, very little has changed in goat cheese production, and Ofer makes only minimal use of machinery. But don’t worry – we are not going to get too detailed here. Ofri and Ofer will gladly explain and show you the whole process

Spring 2011

when you visit them on their beautiful farm, in a nutshell we can tell you that all different kinds of goat cheese require different processes and bacteria. Wait – different kinds of goat cheese? There’s more than one type of “goat cheese”? Yes! In fact, most of the cheeses that are usually made with cow’s milk can actually be made with goat’s milk as well. You can have Carmel-Cheddar, Goat-Gruyere, or try their great “Goatgonzola”! At Carmelis you can get more than 20 different kinds of goat cheese! There is even more! How about Gelato? Yes, at Carmelis you can get, not ice cream – but gelato. Rich and smooth with an intense flavour (they have 24 flavours!!), Carmelis Gelato is of course made

Spring 2011

with goat’s milk. The big difference is that they use whole milk and not cream, also there are no eggs used in the process and it is free of preservatives. You really have to taste it to believe it! So – what are you waiting for? Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan is open 7 days a week from March 1st to October 31st, and it is a beautiful and scenic drive along the lake, orchards, and wineries to get there. You can also book tours which include a look into the dairy plant, a visit to the ageing cellar, the milking station, and a cheese tasting – and yes, you’ll also meet the goats. When Dreams become Reality

They started as the largest productions of their kind in Canada and have now become a great fundraiser and a wonderful way for kids and their parents to give back to their community. Two times a year the Wentworth Music Education Centre, with locations in Kelowna and Vernon, takes old fashioned music recital and turns it right on it’s end. Don’t expect the small auditorium and church recitals everyone has grown up with – think big, really big! Envision a full blown rock production in front of a sold-out concert hall with more than 800 screaming people at a real rock venue complete with all the fixings. 64

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

Just recently, on February 19th, we joined the students of the Wentworth Music School, their proud families and friends, many supportive members of the community and music fans for “We Weren’t Born To Follow- A Tribute to Bon Jovi” at the Kelowna Community Theatre. Besides the fact that it was almost impossible to find a parking spot anywhere around the Community Theatre (so we ended up with a ticket – hey, we give back to the Community as well!) this was above and beyond what we had expected. This concert followed the previous sold out performances such as Wentworth’s tribute to Guitar Hero and the Rolling Stones, so we had seen pictures and heard about the shows, but how different to join a crowd of 853. A total of 19 songs from the nearly thirty year long career of Bon Jovi, were presented by the students ages 5 and up, and boy did they rock the hall! A professional stage, complete with special lighting and a high-end set-up served as the backdrop for the 150 students who Spring 2011

participated in the concert. From “It’s my Life” to “Livin’ on a Prayer” and a great rendition of “Bed of Roses”, the kids truly owned the stage and received standing ovations.

from the shows going to charity. Between February 2008 and June 2011 the Wentworth Music Education Centre will have raised over $50,000 for our local Hospital’s children’s ward!

Very impressive and well done! We can’t wait to see the next show! “ What a great success”, an obviously proud Noel Wentworth summed up after the show, “would you call this a recital?

Make sure you catch the next show to support our community and kids. For more information please visit the official website of the Wentworth Music Education Centre at www.wmec.ca photography: Dunsmoor Photographic

This is a serious production, this is where dreams come true. These shows not only benefit the students with the sense of accomplishment for taking their skills to the next level. They also benefit from higher self esteem, self confidence, pride, as well as the positive high that a musician can get from a performance of this size. This is a win-win!” And that it really is – with all proceeds Spring 2011

SIZE does Matter! The Monumental Art of Michelle Loughery “My murals are about people having an effect on their cities, taking responsibility for their visual and physical environment, leaving records of their lives and concerns, and in the process transforming neighbourhoods, making inspiring artists out of the youth and our communities.” Michelle Loughery photography: Triboda Printing Company Ltd.

“Gigantic...” That is what most people will probably think when they see one of Michelle Loughery’s artworks. And there is something else to it. Unlike most other masters’ art you do not have to dress up and visit a gallery or a vernissage to admire them – Michelle’s work is literally just around the corner. All you have to do is – spend some time in Vernon. The North Okanagan’s largest city is Michelle Loughery’s 68

outdoor gallery, where she turned numerous building facades into huge pieces of art, a legacy and a project that will change the future for a lot of youths. What to most of us is a nice diversion when driving through the streets of Vernon, began as a four month program with just a few brushes, some donated paints and a huge vision that eventually turned into a 6 year project. In the end, and with close to two million dollars of funding from the Government of Canada and the City of Vernon along with thousands of dollars in donations from the community, the Downtown Vernon Mural Project has completed 26 large scale heritage murals on downtown buildings. The artwork shows pioneers who played a significant role in shaping the Vernon that we all Spring 2011

know today. And let’s be honest – most of us have never really spent all that much time in front of these amazing artworks, or looked into the story and the artist behind them. Correct? Well, don’t worry – let us introduce you to Michelle Loughery. ICON Okanagan: Michelle, first and foremost – how did you get into painting murals? Fine art on canvas, yes, illustrations on board, sure, sculptures made out of clay and even metal , not a problem – but painting gigantic murals on walls? Michelle: Why not? I actually started at the age of 13 when I painted my bedroom’s wall – without my mother’s permission ;-) I got hooked when I was watching a senior class doing a huge face mural. It was only 10 by 20 but I can still remember all the details. It’s not about the size of the canvas, really, it doesn’t matter to me. Your arm is the brush, you have fun and if you mess up you can always paint over it. ICON Okanagan: That’s true, I guess. What was your first large mural? Michelle: That was back in my hometown of Michel-Natel, BC. I convinced the local Arts Council, the town, the wall owner...and painted a 100 foot long and 40 foot high mural for free. A group of high school summer students jumped in and the rest is history. When I saw local seniors in tears and the community rally around it I discovered the experience of Community Art. ICON Okanagan: We will get back to the Community factor in a minute, but first please give us a quick idea on how you paint these enormous works of art.

Spring 2011

Michelle: What most people can’t believe is that I paint the murals freehand. A lot of artists would use a projector, or a grid to transfer a sketch to the wall, but not me. I am one of the few muralists in the world who approach the wall like a canvas, start with one eye and then it grows. I am a selftaught artist and learned about techniques and materials by trail and error, which may have taken a little bit longer, but it also gave me the chance to understand how the different materials interact with each other. A typical mural will take me two weeks up to a month, depending on the sun, or rain, or snow, or the wind ... and all the chats I usually have with onlookers. ICON Okanagan: What is the biggest mural you have painted (so far)? Michelle: That’s the Tim McGraw mural in Merritt. It’s 300 x 50 feet ;-) The largest one with the most detail is the war mural in Vernon at 320 x 22 feet. ICON Okanagan: Now, your work is not just bound to the Okanagan area, correct?

Michelle: Oh, no. I have worked in many other communities across Canada and the US. and have projects in Australia, Japan and Scotland. ICON Okanagan: Wow, very impressive. Ok, now let’s get back to the community factor. You say the murals bring a community closer together? Michelle: The Murals are the barn raiser, the sense of place. A place where everyone is equal. On the streets a politician, homeless person, business owner, youth, senior or child. The stories that are told in murals are usually ones of triumph or challenges overcome. Heritage and Culture tells where we come from, who we are. It is not my perspective or opinion, it is where we all come from. ICON Okanagan: And here’s your chance to let prospect clients know about a dream project ..

Michelle: I would like to paint a series of Human Right Murals. Or a series of world issue murals, where we take young people around the world to communities and do random drive by paintings on huge canvases. To help spread the word of how art can heal and teach. I would also like to paint the residential school story. I feel such a tie to the First nation Community and Artists. To bring a bunch of Artists and survivors together and help create that wall...would be so powerful and humbling. www.muralist.ca

started in 1998 when the Downtown Vernon Association (DVA) partnered up with Michelle Loughery to develop a multi-faceted program to employ and provide employment and life skills training to at-risk youth in a community art/ tourism/economic development initiative. With the Wayfinder-Project Michelle Loughery is the only muralist in the world to have created a community based Youth Mural Program that hires and teaches local aboriginal youth and youth at risk. The program provides youth with firsthand experience and training not available through traditional educational resources.

Since its launch in 1998 the Vernon Youth Employment Program has worked with over 220 at risk youth, offering a full-circle program of life skills training/workshops and employability training/workshops. “My vision is that within the next five to ten years the rural communities of British Columbia that have suffered the effects of rural decline will have been revitalized, moving forward to a new-age version of its previous state of economic, cultural, and ecological sustainability. Well, spring is here, and we thought it fitting to find some wines to make the switch from the heavier and richer tastes of winter to the lighter and brighter flavors of spring. Enjoy!

Pentâge 2007 Pinot Noir A red wine for spring? Heck yeah! And you know what? Even better - We highly recommend pairing it with salmon. Yes, as in FISH! Once upon a time, the rule was “white wine with fish.” Scratch that! If salmon has a place on your table this spring, and if you want to emphasize its meaty richness, then pair it with this wine! You won’t regret it! This medium weight Pinot Noir has some wonderful fruit aromas, from sweet cherries to plums, nicely balanced with the typical earthy root flavours. I was tempted to say “leather” and savoury spice. It won the Silver Medal in the Northwest Wine Summit Competition 2009 for a reason, so make sure to add some bottles to your wine cellar. Remember: A Pinot Noir is generally a drink-young wine so do not expect it to improve past about five years. Ok, bottom line - tempt your taste buds and pair this wine with grilled salmon and a baby arugula salad. Sensational! Btw: Pinot Noir is also used in the production of Champagne. As Champagne is a white sparkling wine, it is labelled Blanc de Noir (“White of Black”) when it is made from 100% Pinot Noir. Retail: $22 Alc./Vol.: 13.5%

2009 8th Generation Pinot Gris Pinot Gris is thought to be a clone of the Pinot Noir grape. It can be so light that it’s uninteresting, but the better wine has a rich, fruit-laden and floral bouquet flavour that’s just right for spring. The best of the Pinot Gris wines are beautifully aromatic, with scents of white fruits and highlights of flower and spice. The 2009 Pinot Gris turned out to be a real winner for the folks at 8th Generation Vineyard in Summerland. Just recently it won the Bronze medal at the 2010 International Wine Competition in Kelowna. Partly barrel fermented and 1/3 barrel aged to add complexity, it has a rich, fruit-laden and almost lychee fruit-like flavour which jostles images of a bloom-filled spring. Perfect for the first picnic (screw-cap topper) and great with spicy Asian cuisine. Btw: Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are in fact the exact same grape variety. It originated in France as Pinot Gris, whereas across the border in Italy it is known as Pinot Grigio. And yes, although subtle, there is a distinction in the different wines made from this grape. The Italian style Pinot Grigio wines are typically lighter-bodied, crisp and fresh, with a touch of spice. Retail: $19.99 Alc./Vol.: 13.8% 72

2008 Inniskillin Zinfandel “The 2008 Discovery Series Zinfandel exhibits vivid aromas of pomegranate, raspberries, and licorice, finishing with cinnamon, black pepper and ripe red fruit.” This according to the online tasting note on the Inniskillin website. Sounds almost festive, doesn’t it? So why did we pick it for the Spring? Well, granted, a Zinfandel is not the typical Spring wine, but it’s fervent, spirited flavor and the cornucopia of berries makes it luscious and a perfect wine for anything barbecued with a rich sticky sauce. And hey ... whats better than barbecuing with friends on a sunny Spring day? The Zinfandel grape is actually almost unexplored in the Okanagan Valley and was first planted here in 1999/ 2000. The desert-like climate of the South Okanagan has been very hospitable to the grape, which is now part of the ‘Discovery Series’, where Inniskillin try grapes that are not typical for the region. The grapes for the 2008 Zinfandel were hand harvested from the Bear Cub Vineyard near sun-drenched Osoyoos on October 16, 2008 and fermented for 12 days on the skins and aged in 50% French and 50% American oak barrels. A wine with berry flavours on the entry, and almost coffee-esque flavours on the finish. It’s barbecue season baby! Retail: $19.99 Alc./Vol.: 14.5% www.inniskillin.com

Road 13 Viognier Riesling Sauvignon “The name has changed, the region is honoured.” It is actually not that long ago that the owners of “Golden Mile Cellars” along with winemaker Michael Bartier decided that this name belonged to all the wineries in this unique area along Highway 97, and so they changed the name to “Road 13 Vineyards” and gave it a new, fresh and more contemporary look. That was in 2008, Back to our wine, and what a delicious wine it is. The Road 13 Viognier Riesling Sauvignon, a blend of 61% Viognier (so expect a luscious feel in your mouth!), 30% Riesling and 9% Sauvignon Blanc replaces the very successful 2008 Viognier-Roussanne-Marsanne and we have no doubt it is equally high in demand. This very fresh blend with its compelling aromas of grapefruit, apricot and pear adds colour to every spring day. There’s a hint of exotic spice, very lovely and fragrant. We recommend it with smoked salmon or tuna, some fruity-fresh salad ... and especially with spicy Indian or Asian dishes. Now go out and grab a few bottles and stock them. What can we say ... “It’s all about the dirt” ;-) Retail: $22.99 Alc./Vol.: 13.9% www.road13vineyards.com
