ICON Okanagan on Tour WAM!

Rotary Centre for the Arts May 1 No, this has nothing to do with the infamous band from the 80’s. “WAM!” (and not “Wham!”) stands for “Wine, Art & Music” and was one of the events at the 2011 Spring Wine Festival. Organized by Lesley Spiegel of Synergy Events and sponsored by Turner Audi, “WAM!” was a true winner. Hosting several wineries from throughout the Okanagan as well as a brewery and live action stations featuring chefs from Okanagan restaurants, this event was a sensory experience. Sensory? Yes, as they combined the tasting experience with art and music. Circus banners, live drawing, painting, and graffiti art were all being created onsite. Circus performances, live music with world class pianist (and Bruce Willis look-a-like) Andrew Johns and singer-songwriter James Avery...there was something for everyone. More than 300 guests attended this first-time event, and we can truly say we can’t wait for next year’s “WAM!” Stay tuned or become a fan on Facebook: www.facebook.com/wineartmusic

This often leads to customers and employee’s alike meeting on the lake, boating together, and truly becoming friends. From personal experience, we have got to say it is an absolute pleasure hanging out and dealing with everyone at Rayburn’s. Our first 10

interaction with the Rayburn’s family was when we were personally invited to a customer appreciation event at the Kelowna facility. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff, provided with a name tag and given introductions all around. Throughout the evening we met many long time customers excited about their boats, and happy to be hanging out with people of similar interests.

The people at Cobalt also go by the saying: “Luxury is Not Made of Plastic” so you can be assured that your boat and all of its components are constructed of only the most superior materials; an aluminum dash panel, a solid fibreglass helm station, stainless steel switches, stainless steel ignition, and waterproof electrical connectors. tion. These high standards are reflected in every single boat that leaves their facility ensuring quality, and dependability. Crownline has married a sexy, sporty look with that of high sophistication, exactly what boaters who desire comfort and convenience are looking for.

With interiors that are conversation and entertainment friendly, designed for beauty as well as luxury you can enjoy the exceptionally smooth and responsive ride provided by Crownline’s deep-V hulls and fast planing times. Larson With a history dating back to 1913, humble beginnings have lead to nearly a century of experience in the boating industry for Larson. Producing an impressive range of family focused boats, from entry level bowriders to the striking Cabrio line this experience is evident. Technology developed specifically to increase the efficiency, and decrease environmental impact and labour costs has also placed Larson in a position of very competitive pricing. The VEC composite moulding process is a computer-managed sealed-mould lamination system resulting in a one-piece hull and stringer. Due to the fact that the resins are injected into a sealed mould, hulls are stronger and lighter than those built with the typical open-mould process and potent chemicals such as styrene are not released into the atmosphere. There’s no wood in a VEC hull, and they all come with a transferrable limited lifetime warranty. Due to the labour cost savings in the production of these boats they are able to equip even the most basic cost effective models with the same finishing trims as the more expensive models. Get your family down to check out one of these beautiful boats. Mastercraft If you and your family are the active type, and the reason you are all out on the water is to get some exercise and show each other up on your wakeboard or skis, then it seems you may be interested in a Mastercraft. Since 1968 Mastercraft has been a consistent presence in the boating industry. With the goal continuing to build the world’s best ski, wakeboard and luxury performance powerboats, year after year you can be assured that there is a boat in their impressively wide range perfect for you. “The style of a MasterCraft is unmistakable. It’s also incomparable. We’ve been as much about breaking tradition as setting the bar, moving forward when most of the industry moves sideways. While the comSummer 2011

petition continues to follow each other, we set trends with bold, new shapes, colors, designs and fine details to give our boats a distinct personality all their own... We weave the threads of style and innovation into our entire fleet, epitomized by our unique ability to blend handlaid fiberglass with intricately-sculpted billet aluminum appointments, using hundreds of individual pieces fashioned by elite cutting and shaping technology. Unified, they form the true iconic MasterCraft — a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.” – Mastercraft Regal:

One of the world’s largest family owned boat manufacturing companies, Regal started production in the late 60’s with incredibly humble beginnings and many hardships associated with economic instability. Having beat all of this adversity Regal stands proud with an impeccable product and lots of it. Their line up of bowriders, cuddies, deck boats, express cruisers, and sporty yachts will make your head spin. With Regal’s proprietary FasTrac® hull design, water is strategically shaped and creates a free, floaty ride -higher, cleaner, running faster and more efficiently than many other boats. Life Long Service - First Mate Marine Management With an investment like this it is always important to know that it is taken care of, hassle free and in a timely manner. This establishment is not only focused on selling you a boat, at Rayburn’s they are dedicated to forming a lifelong friendship and bond with their clientele. marine refurbishing, fibreglass and gelcoat repairs, stereo installations and repairs, and a full array of summerizing and winterizing packages. THE NEXT GENERATION The Aquos Quattron LC-70LE732U So, is big beautiful? Well, judging by Sharp’s new Flagship television, the Aquos Quattron LC-70LE732U it most certainly is. Billed by Sharp as “the largest LCD television on the market” (watch out – the 72inch LG 72LZ9700 is on its way as well!), the newest player in the ultra-big-screen category is equipped with Sharp’s proprietary extra pixel technology, a 120Hz refresh rate, and the requisite Internet services. The guys at HTC (Home Theater Concepts) were kind enough to provide us with a model for a full-weekend – yes, life at ICON is tough! But hey, what don’t we do for our readers?

14

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

The first impression It’s BIG! We are talking about the box it comes in. If you want to buy this baby, better have your buddy with a pick-up give you a hand, or have it delivered. The TV itself measures 161 x 100 x 36 cm with its stand and weighing in at 45kg don’t even think about mounting it yourself. Once it is in place you will admire its simplicity. The LCD panel is framed with a simple black bezel, no shiny stainless steel cover or fancy “ambient lighting”. It’s all about the panel itself. The Quattron Technolgy Quattron? Yes, Sharp’s proprietary Quad Pixel Technology adds the color Y (yellow) to the 3 colours of R (red), G (green), and B (blue) of the traditional television pixel structure. This technology enables the reproduction of colors that have been impossible to portray using conventional LCD displays, such as the brass color of musical instruments, with enhanced aqua greens, and Caribbean blues. The addition of the yellow sub-pixel also allows more light to pass through to the panel. Sharp’s advanced pixel control technology minimizes light leakage while offering a Summer 2011

wider aperture to let more light through with lower power consumption. The combination of these factors results in brighter, more vibrant images. Sharp’s Quad Pixel Plus technology enables the processing of images with higher resolution and less jags in diagonal lines. Speaking of resolution – the Aquos has full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and an incredible dynamic contrast ratio of 6,000,000:1. The result? Excellent picture quality! The Experience We worked extremely hard that weekend to get you the facts about the image quality and user friendliness of this TV. Which means ... we had to watch hockey games, action flicks, and even had to find out if the remote was still manageable after we had a glass of wine or a beer from one of our fantastic local wineries and breweries. Oh boy ... Ok, let’s cut it short. The picture quality is outstanding. We would have to watch the same movie, same scene, simultaneously on two different TV’s to really find out if the 4th colour makes a difference, but if you have this “wow, can it be any better”-feeling it must be good, right? The only recommendation we have is ...

Summer 2011

subscribe to HD. You really need Hi-Def channels with a screen of this size, otherwise you can count pixels. What else? The LC-70LE732U features connected TV services, including the addition of Vudu™ apps, Netflix streaming video, CinemaNow capability, and Sharp’s online support system, AQUOS Advantagesm Live. Oh, right. The LC-70LE732U has built-in WiFi, too. Dual USB inputs for media players and portable video/ music players are also a nice feature. Not too shabby. It also boasts extremely low power consumption and is ENERGY STAR® qualified, meeting the industry’s highest energy efficiency specifications. So are you disappointed it is not a 3D model? Well, Sharp will extend its line of 70-inch AQUOS Quattron LED LCD TVs this summer with the LC-70LE735U (3D) and LC-70LE734U (240Hz) models. Each will offer full HD 1080p image resolution and employ Quattron Quad Pixel Technology. There you go! The LC-70LE732U is now available for a suggested retail price of $3,999

From Concept to Completion One year ago, Bo Snarski of Vibona Enterprises set in motion a plan to form a conglomerate of businesses with the same goal: to provide their clients with the absolute best products, services, and experience possible. He envisioned a space in which these individuals, each at the top of their field, worked side by side under the umbrella of “The Factory” – A place where projects could move from concept to completion.

easyrider Touring the South Okanagan What a fantastic tour! We definitely picked the right day for our test drive. At 9 am when we picked up the bikes at Bentley Motorrad the sun was already shining and it was nice and warm. Ready to enjoy the fantastic scenery of the South Okanagan we set off, making our way all the way down to the US border. Along the vineyards and orchards, taking side roads whenever possible, exploring our spectacular Okanagan Valley we were able to truly enjoy these beautiful bikes. From Ducati, we had the opportunity to ride their newest and most controversial offering in the cruiser segment - the Diavel Carbon. We were immediately drawn to it’s aggressive and futuristic styling, coupled with exposed internals, the bike looks as if it belongs in a Terminator film, it is beautiful yet technical and rugged. With its power output listed at 162 hp and 94 ft/lbs of torque this machine will stomp any other cruiser on the market straight from the get go, confidently growling with a spine tingling exhaust note perfectly tuned by Ducati. On the sportier side of things we opted for the BMW S1000RR, featuring a standard anti-lock braking system, with an optional electronic traction control, producing 179. 2 hp at the rear wheel with an overall wet weight of just 458 lbs this machine goes just as fast as it looks. Originally designed by BMW Motorrad to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championships, this machine is now a huge hit commercially, topping many reviewers list in the 1000cc sport bike category. If you’re looking for something with a retro look without compromising modern engineering, handling, and comfort then we have 32

the perfect bike for you, along with us on our ride was the Triumph Bonneville SE. This old school ride is always eager to please but never puts you in a situation that might endanger or surprise you. With an 856cc engine putting out a respectable 67 hp and 51 ft lbs, you won’t be doing any wheelies or spinning your rear tire, but you are sure to have a lot of fun. The Italian Connection Yes, we love cars here in the Okanagan. From classic cars to exotics, our valley turns into one big showroom every summer. For the connoisseur of high-end sports cars there is nothing like an Italian-made automobile. It is the passion that those cars are built with that sets them apart from the rest. You can see it in the shape of the car, smell it in the interior, and hear it on the road. For those fortunate enough to make their dream come true Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver, the only factory authorized Ferrari and Maserati dealer in BC, will do their utmost to find you the right car, new or used. We recently visited their state-of-the-art facility and were impressed with what we experienced. No doubt, their sales staff and the factory trained technicians in

the service department share the same passion! Our favourite car was the beautiful Maserati GranTourismo Convertible, an exceptional and exclusive four-seat cabriolet. It`s the first ever soft-top convertible to be developed and built at the company’s Modena factory, and the only drop-top in its class to seat four adults in full comfort. Master coach builder Pininfarina, famous for their Ferrari creations, has once more outdone themselves with this car. We took it out for a spin ... and immediately fell in love with the sound. “La bella macchina” indeed! All for a price even lower than many other European luxury cars. It’s in your SMILE! A Dental Practice That Fits Your Lifestyle

Okanagan Smiles is a dental practice owned and operated by Dr. Jonathan Visscher and his wife Dr. Debra Matson, who, having earned their Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from Loma Linda University School of Denistry in Southern California, have practiced in California and the U.S. territory of Guam. During their extensive travels throughout the Americas and Asia, they became licensed and practiced in 3 different countries. Due to their passion to provide dental care to under serviced areas, Drs.Visscher and Matson have also travelled with the non profit organization New Reality International to provide oral and dental care internationally. Naturally, as a native of the Okanagan Valley, Dr. Visscher was eventually drawn here and the couple decided to make Kelowna their new home where Okanagan Smiles was born. I don’t know about you, but in the past as my dental appointment has inched closer, a certain anxious shiver has always run down my spine. This isn’t to say my recent

experiences have been terrible or traumatizing, however, instantly I am reminded of the nauseating smell, the high pitch screech of the drills around me, and pain...always pain. That is why I was so surprised when I walked into the waiting room at Okanagan Smiles. Trembling, I poked my head around the corner and astonishingly I was not met with that familiar fear inducing odour, but rather a warm inviting aroma. I sat down and was greeted by the receptionist, offered a beverage and for the first time in a dentist’s office, I was at ease. Soon enough it was time for my appointment and as we moved through the reception into the examination room, I was happy to see state of the art equipment, comfortable chairs and televisions to keep me distracted. Shortly I was greeted at my chair by Dr. Debra Matson, the clean and relaxed environment keeping me at ease. As this was my first visit, I was subject to a full complement of low impact digital x-rays and photographic images of my teeth in order to gain a complete understanding of my current oral health, set a baseline, and record everything of importance. I was asked about any and all concerns I had and we went over my scans in order to locate any areas that required attention before they became an issue for me. Then we scheduled in the procedures I required to bring me to where I needed to be. With all the tension behind, it is easy to see that a den-

5 Ways to guarantee a Healthy Smile! Snack Less Did you know that acid-producing bacteria cause decay and gingivitis? The bacteria have a 2-hr window of activity after you feed them. Snacking or sipping coffee throughout the day will keep them active longer, causing more cavities than in someone who doesn’t snack as often. Regular Check-Ups! Dental exams are important not only to check up on how you’re brushing, but to catch decay before it spreads to the nerve and starts to hurt. Oral cancer is on the rise, and can be detected by looking and feeling your oral tissues. Also, many cancers metastasize to the jawbone first, and that can be caught with x-rays of the bone surrounding the teeth. Right now, the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population is those under 45 who do not smoke! Avoid Sticky/Sugary snacks Sticky foods stay on your teeth longer thereby increasing the amount of time the bacteria are feeding. The longer they are fed the more acid they produce and the weaker Summer 2011

your enamel becomes. Brush Your Tongue! Bad-breath-causing bacteria reside in the forest of taste buds on the top of your tongue. Stay kissable by brushing here too! Baby Bottle Decay Nothing makes us sadder than seeing kids who have been put to bed with a bottle in their mouths. Bathing the baby teeth in milk or juice softens their enamel causing decay on their front teeth which spreads to other teeth and adult teeth when they come in. Let’s keep our kids healthy and send them to bed with freshly-brushed teeth!

Oasis in The City Greenroom Restaurant, Kelowna

Need something to get excited about? Well we’ve got just what you need. Fresh, new, inspiring, delicious! Only moments away from our downtown office, we were surprised to discover the gem that is Greenroom Restaurant. Located in the heart of Kelowna’s cultural district and only a half a block away from our exquisite Waterfront, this boutique bistro is a culinary delight, an oasis hidden in plain sight – a perfect stop while enjoying a brisk walk along the lake.

Chef Scott Nystrom and owner Kevin O’Brien

Originally associated with the Kelowna Actor’s studio the Greenroom Restaurant was focused on providing a catering service for the shows taking place at the studio. New owner Kevin O’Brien, who recently relocated to the valley from eastern Canada, offers a new menu and has created a fresh a new look and feel. The beautiful and natural earth tones that surround you in the newly arranged dining room lend to a fabulous dining experience. With such a modern, casual space the Greenroom is inviting and comfortable, licensed for up to 50 indoors. Not to mention the fantastic patio capable of seating 40 very comfortably amid the shrubbery and unique rock planters. The experience is reminiscent of a bustling European patio. Now, onto the food, with globally inspired dishes indicative of the ethnic melting pot of New York City the all new menu offers locally sourced foods and wines with accompanying gluten-free and vegetarian options. We had the pleasure of sampling several exquisitely prepared dishes. Starting with the Italian Pesto Chicken Panino filled with succulent chicken breast, basil pesto, roma tomatos, and spinach grilled on a fragrant herb flatbread. Next, a vibrantly colourful Strawberry Feta Salad layered with fresh sweet strawberries, feta cheese, red onion, avocado and some fabulous maple candied pecans on a bed of baby spinach with garlic vinaigrette. 40

Finally the Ponzu Pineapple Salad with shrimp consisting of aThai slaw of carrots, sprouts, red peppers, and aromatic mint atop a nest of cucumber curls and garden greens, dressed impeccably with citrus ponzu vinaigrette. Well, the restaurant is also a great place to experience the Singing Servers, who will occasionally throw down a tune or two for their patrons.

A sunbaked oasis in the city

Timeless Estate On a fabulous sun kissed afternoon in Kelowna, with the top down on my car I headed into town to check out Jane Hoffman’s most recent offering, excited about the prospect of viewing a home on prestigious Hobson Road, I could not wait to see what I was in for. As I approached the estate and drove through the beautiful splitting entry gate, I was surprised at how secluded and private the home was. Located in the lower mission and only moments from the city center, this is truly a paradise in the city. Architecturally designed by Richard Hewitt and built by Neil Miller of Miller Homes the residence is surrounded by a stunning arrangement of perfectly manicured gardens and nestled in at the far end of the lot encapsulated by mature trees and shrubbery. The timeless style of the home, with its fine rock work and warm colours, is inviting. As you enter through the dramatic handcrafted front door you are met with a grand two story foyer flooded with natural light. Herzlich Willkommen!

Gasthaus on the Lake, Peachland The “Gasthaus on the Lake” in Peachland attracts people from all over the Okanagan and even the Lower Mainland with its authentic Bavarian look, great food and events such as the “Medieval Feast.” Owners Werner Fischer, Joerg Hoerath and Devin Smith take great pride in their pub and the fine dining restaurant, which opened its doors in 1991 and received it’s final expansion in 2000. Although the enormous wood-burning fireplace guarantees a cozy atmosphere in the winter, it is the summer months that make the Gasthaus a “must visit” here in the Okanagan. Located on Beach Avenue right across from the beach the huge “Beer garden” patio offers some of the best views in the Valley and invites people to stop by for lunch, coffee and cake, or dinner. You almost have the feel of a Mediterranean garden with all the flowers and plants around you, and should the unforeseen occur there are heated sheltered areas and gazebos to avoid a rare summer rain. We visited the Gasthaus on the first weekend of June with temperatures (finally) reaching the high 20s. At around 3pm it was too early for a hearty dinner, so we went through the extensive pub menu and finally decided on some “Schnitzel Fingers,” the must-have Bratwurst and Sauerkraut and a fresh mixed greens salad. Oh, right, not to forget our “Hefeweizen” a Bavarian specialty wheat beer which is served in a traditional half

litre glass. Delicious! The sunshine and the beer garden atmosphere were the icing on the cake. Oh, right, cake! When the waitress revealed the “cake platter,” a display of the available cakes and pie, to the neighbouring table, we quickly had to cancel our dinner appointments for that evening. There was no way we could deny ourselves one of the delectable homemade specialities. So even if you are just looking for a great spot for a gourmet coffee, cappuccino, or espresso make sure you visit the Gasthaus. The drive is more than worth it, and with Peachland’s new waterfront boardwalk you may want to plan in some extra time.

Joe Buds Coffee, Kelowna “It all started when we realized that the neighbourhood was really missing a coffee shop. A place to meet, read the newspaper or surf the internet” Chris McAnerney laughs. Chris and her husband John, own Green & Bear It! in the Sunshine Market plaza at 4600 Lakeshore Road and when a space came available in the plaza, they quickly decided to change this, creating the “Joe Bud’s Coffee” brand. The name is an homage to Chris’ dad Joe Bud, who simply loved good coffee and the opportunity to befriend a stranger. They opened the store in September 2010. “We wanted to get it right”, Chris explains. “We bought the best Espresso machine we could get our hands on and worked with local designer Christine Pinette to give the shop a very cozy and comfortable atmosphere with warm colours and paintings by local artists. We definitely did our homework in order to find fresh, local products. Twice a week fresh beans arrive. “We are open all week long and offer great breakfast wraps and delicious baked goods. It’s a true family business as our daughter Katie is the store manager, how great is that?” And now the neighbourhood has it’s own coffee house again. Next time you are in the area, make sure to stop by and try their incredibly delicious cinnamon knots with a caramel macchiato or their signature frappuccino, the mojo 360°.

Steve Berry - THE JEFFERSON KEY The 7th and latest instalment of the Cotton Malone series begins as a plot to assassinate the President of the United States has been discovered, our hero is unintentionally lured to the scene of the crime and races to intervene. Along the way, he uncovers evidence linking all four Presidential murders; Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy to a group known as The Commonwealth, a secret brotherhood of pirates first assembled during the American Revolution. See Ya Later! A Visit to See Ya Later Ranch at Hawthorne Mountain Vineyards, Okanagan Falls

Located high above the Okanagan Valley and just outside the town of Okanagan Falls, “See Ya Later Ranch” is settled in an atmosphere of old world timelessness with a rich historical background. The wineries’ roots date back to the early 1900s, when the site was first established as a working ranch by the Hawthorne Brothers. In the 1920’s the brothers and their families sold the ranch to Major Hugh Fraser, who up until then had only visited the Okanagan Valley. He found the freedom, open skies, and the beautiful scenery of the Okanagan to be the ideal frontier for his outgoing personality. Quickly determining that he wanted to make it his permanent home, he purchased the Hawthorne Ranch.

We believe the Major would definitely approve of SYL Ranch and its wines! Dave Carson, Senior Winemaker The following 45 years that the Major called the ranch his home are a fascinating mixture of myth and reality, but what is known for sure is that he became a true local celebrity and a favourite among residents of the area.

in a doggy cemetery on his property which still exists to this day. He would even give them headstones with their names and dates engraved. Hugh Fraser was also the first president of the Penticton branch of the SPCA.

Those who met Hugh Fraser will describe him as a man with a kind nature, who celebrated life to the fullest, enjoyed gatherings with his friends - and loved dogs. He would let them run free on the ranch and loved the little flea bags so much that he would lay them to rest

Major Hugh Fraser passed away in 1970 when he was 85 years old. The Winery Although the original vineyard planting started in 1960 a winery was only established in 1986 (LeComte Estate Winery). From 1995 on, “Hawthorne Mountain Vineyards” started to create a series of wines in 2003 under the “See Ya Later Ranch” name to salute both the site’s quirky history and also the man who first planted grapes in the beautiful mountain setting.

Major Hugh Fraser was a prolific letter-writer, ending each letter with the signature phrase, “see ya later,” which was shortened to the letters S.Y.L. and led to the naming of the property – SYL Ranch. In a slow transition Hawthorne Mountain Vineyards became “See Ya Later Ranch” in 2005. See Ya Later Ranch’s beautiful tasting room and wine shop are in the Major’s original old home. The house, built with hand-split stone, is a historic gem and dates back to the 1900s. Unfortunately most of his possessions and treasures did not remain with the ranch, but there are historic photographs and some other trinkets for you to admire. Major Hugh Fraser with one of his dogs (1958) Summer 2011

There nothing like tasting a great wine served in this historical atmosphere! Make sure to spend some time on the SYL Ranch patio, too, the view over the vineyards all the way to Skaha Lake is spectacular and you can enjoy your glass of wine with a nice cheese platter or a light lunch. The patio is open for lunch from 11.30am to 4.30pm. The Winemaker Dave Carson, the senior winemaker at SYL, has worked in vineyards since age 11 so it came with no surprise that he picked a career in the wine industry. In 1980, Carson helped build the vineyard at Sumac Ridge Estate Winery, and worked there until his move to Sumac Ridge’s sister winery Hawthorne Mountain Vineyards. Mason Spink joined SYL Ranch in 2007 and has been their winemaker since 2009. Both Dave and Mason are very excited about the future possibilities at the winery. “There are plenty of opportunities here,” they say. “There have been some outstanding wines produced here and we are doing our best to carry on that tradition.” www.icon-okanagan.com

The Wines The winery produces premium varietals that include Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer (Hawthorne Mountain Vineyard has the largest planting of Gewürztraminer in North America, where 65 acres are planted with this aromatic, cool climate varietal.), Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Meritage, Semillon, Icewine, and a classical method Brut. The 2008 See Ya Later “Ping”, a blend of 71% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc, just won the “Best of Class” at the “International Wine & Spirits Awards” in London, England. “A true winner”, Mason raves, “...but for our Okanagan summer months I would recommend the Pinot Noir or our SYL Ranch

Rover, a blend of 96.5% Shiraz co-fermented with 3.5% Viognier. You can’t beat a Pulled Pork Sandwich with a glass of Rover, believe me!” We took the chance to sample some of the See Ya Later Ranch wines, and our favourites are the 2009 See Ya Later Ranch Riesling, a fresh and vibrant Riesling and the 2007 See Ya Later Ranch Pinot Noir. At the right temperature (little more than 16 degrees) this is a fabulous wine with aromas of strawberry and black cherry. Oh, right, and the 2008 See Ya Later Ranch Non Vintage Brut. We visited See Ya Later Ranch on one of the first warm and sunny summer days, so what better than a chilled sparkling wine with a reminiscent orchard fruit bouquet? What can we say – we truly enjoyed our visit to See Ya Later Winery. It was a beautiful drive along both Okanagan and Skaha Lake, and we will definitely be back this summer for a wine tasting and a relaxing lunch on the patio. See ya later! The wine shop and tasting room are open year-round, and tours of the winery are offered May to October.

The Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery

“The philosophy… is to embrace the privilege and the opportunity to showcase many of the local producers with their array of local organic produce, fresh, seasonal fruits and artisan breads and cheeses.” The South Okanagan is well known for its beauty and the numerous wineries and orchards. A desirable summer destination for tourists, it offers some great accommodations and an outstanding culinary experience. The Sonora Room Restaurant at Burrowing Owl Winery just south of Oliver is often described as the perfect marriage of food, wine, and ambience. Upon your arrival at the picturesque winery, situated in 140 acres of vineyard, you will be impressed with the beautiful setting overlooking the vineyards.

“Produce does not get much more local than our own backyard,” Chef Van Hooydonk explains. “Many members of our passionate culinary team have gardens at home and truly practice the “field to table” philosophy. You may find yourself enjoying some of the items direct from their gardens!”

The Restaurant is named after its location in the northernmost tip of the Sonora Desert, one of the most highly rated grape-growing locations in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, and for that matter Canada. The res-

Visual Complexity The Art of Angelika “aj” Jaeger Angelika Jaeger, better known as ‘aj’ by her friends and fellow artists, started her art career in her chosen home in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Originally from Germany, the long time Vernon resident has been painting since 1995 and began her studies with internationally known artists through the Federation of Canadian Artists workshops. Ten years later, aj enrolled in Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan and is now in the process of working towards her BFA. aj has had solo exhibits in both Germany and British Columbia, her work can be found in private collections in both Europe and Canada. As part of her commitment to the local arts community, aj has served for several years as the President of the Vernon Public Art Gallery and as Chairperson for the North Okanagan Chapter of

Federation of Canadian Artists. aj has been involved in organizing several regional art shows and conducts workshops regularly in her medium of mixed media/collage out of her studio, as well as various local art centers in Vernon.

‘Complex’, mixed media, 48x66,2010

ICON Okanagan: When did you first realize that art would or could become an important part of your life? aj: That is an interesting question. I remember that as a ‘Swirling’,mixed media, 48x36, 2010 58

child I always wanted to be able to draw or paint. My brothers would tease me about my first attempts and I think that motivated me to show them what I could do if I put my mind to it. trian centre, raising a family, managing a restaurant, and supporting my husband in his business. Come to think of it, I was always quite busy and never found the time to dedicate to art at that point in my life. ICON Okanagan: Sounds like your life has presented you with lots of different opportunities. Back to your art - was there a certain technique you were attracted to? Oils or maybe acrylics?

ICON Okanagan: Well, sometimes you need some, hmmm, encouragement to make things happen. So did you already pursue art on a professional level back in Germany? aj: As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t start until my boys left home for college and university at which point we already lived in the Okanagan Valley.

aj: Not really. I started with drawing and water colours, simply because the opportunity presented itself to me. At the gym, I met a local artist, who encouraged me to take a drawing course. I was told that ‘If you know how to write your name you can learn how to draw!’ So I went on my way.

aj: When I first started dipping into art, I wanted to do something independent from what I had done up until that stage of my life. I wanted flexibility since we traveled a fair bit. After a few years of attending workshops from established artists (mainly through the Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver), I felt that I was searching for more. On an art trip to Sedona with some of my local friends, we stopped in Pullman, Washington to visit a colleague of one of my friends. Wandering through the art school at Washington State University made me realize that this is what I have been looking for. The rest is history, and I am still wandering the art school halls at UBC-Okanagan. ICON Okanagan: So do you see art as your new career now and are you planning to be a full time artist or is it just a hobby? ‘No more, but Forever’, watermedia collage, 16x16,2007

ICON Okanagan: Ok, you are kind of a late bloomer deciding to study fine arts. Why did you decide that studying art would be the way to go? Most people would maybe take some courses or follow the “self taught” way. It also seems, according to your impressive list of exhibitions that you have been pretty successful even without the studies?

aj: Well, I am spending many hours of my day in and on art. Does being a full time artist mean to support myself through my art? Then I might never get there. I am very lucky to have the greatest sponsor in my husband, and his support provides me with the possibility to do what I am doing right now. I am very appreciative of this opportunity and I’m loving it! ICON Okanagan: Yes, we know you are very passionate about your art. You have even become quite a spokesperson for art and artists in the Okanagan, especially for students and younger artists, and it seems you are involved with many shows and events. aj: I have always enjoyed volunteering and getting involved in my community. I am able to present my own work, while helping my young colleagues learning ‘the ropes’ and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their own work. ICON Okanagan: How are you influenced by your younger colleagues? Does their creativity provide you with new perspectives?” ‘Promising a Change’, Encaustic, 12x12, 2006

ICON Okanagan: We almost got used to a certain “aj style”. Colorful mixed-media art with integrated hearts have been a clear signature of yours for quite some time. Then all of a sudden it started to change, and we saw collages in more natural colors, some even in a more illustrative style. In addition, we are now seeing sculptures. Is this because of your curriculum at university? aj: Yes, this has been strongly influenced by my BFA-curriculum. the right mentor to teach me how to try my hands on metal. Thanks to my professor, Byron Johnston, I have been able to do a lot of self-directed studies. As a result, my copper-wired nests have been appearing in several places, and I have a strong feeling that sculptures will be a big part of my last year at UBC-Okanagan. During the upcoming summer I am planning to do more work with my metal artist mentor and friend, Doug Alcock. Doug has been very generous in sharing his knowledge and workshop with me for my ‘Pagamus’ project. ICON Okanagan: aj, what do you think about our art/cultural scene here in the Okanagan? Is it young and thriving or is it something you would say we all should work on? If so, what changes would you like to see?

aj: As I mentioned before, you’ll probably see more sculptural work. I am fascinated by these materials and would like to explore this type of art further. I could see myself working on bigger metal items. When I do art, I am not as analytical as I am in my day-to-day life. I like to give coincidence a chance, so I do not know what is awaiting me, respectively you. ICON Okanagan: Thank you very much for the interview For more information please contact aj49@gmail.com

Goatgonzola, Pear and caramelized Onion Flatbread Ok, keep it simple and wow your company. Great grilled on the BBQ or baked. We used our local “Goatgonzola” from Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisian (Kelowna), but you can use Italian Gorgonzola as well. Make the Caramelized Onions and store for days in your fridge, or at room temperature that day. Method Heat oil in a medium heavy skillet over medium heat and cook onions, salt & pepper until golden (15-20 mins and don’t stop stirring!) Remove from heat and finish with the vinegar. On an upside down cookie sheet, lay flatbread. Spread caramelized onions evenly over flatbread. Arrange pear slices as prettily as possible, sprinkle evenly with cheese and nuts. Slide onto a medium grill and cover. Grill until cheese melts, about 4 minutes. Slide back onto cookie sheet, cut and garnish with herbs. Wine pairing: 2009 See Ya Later Ranch Chardonnay

Flatten the lamb into a long patty, hold one part of the lamb around the cube, enclosing it completely, and shape it into a patty. Repeat with the rest. Season with salt and pepper. Make the Salsa. For the yogurt sauce simply use finely chopped fresh dill and mix it into 1 cup of plain yogurt. Salt and pepper. It’s summertime and the cooking is easy! Picnics, outdoor parties...just get out that BBQ or pack the picnic basket and have a great time. Don’t panic - pairing a wine with grilled food is relatively easy. Since nothing beats a chilled glass of wine on a hot summer day our palates usually turn to white wine. For lighter foods pick a lighter wine, for heartier ones a more robust wine. The same rules apply for red wines, especially with a great steak, as both red and white wines can be light, medium, or full-bodied. To make it even simpler...here are our favourite picks for the summer...

Le Vieux Pin 2009 Petit Blanc Light and fun is the best way to describe the 2009 Petit Blanc from Le Vieux Pin. The winery’s introductory white combines some rather unlikely suspects: Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Rousanne, resulting in some beautiful tropical notes. Mango, peach, citrus, and melon everywhere! This blend really works and makes a crisp and dry white which plays off many types of summer dishes. We would recommend pairing it with salads (try a Greek salad!!) and fish, but it will also do wonders with deep fried appetizers. Le Vieux Pin produced only 600 cases of this wine and as they are dedicated to making their wines in the old French tradition and completely hands on, it is rather rare. Your best bet is to visit them or to order it through the winery. Btw: The name “Le Vieux Pin” originates from the majestic old pine tree found on the vineyard site in Oliver BC. So, next time you are in the area make sure to stop by at the winery for a good wine tasting. Retail: $22.00 Alc./Vol.: 13.2% www.levieuxpin.ca

Stags Hollow 2010 Syrah Rosé Think pink! And get ready for the perfect summer wine! The Stags Hollow Syrah Rosé is actually a blend (94% Syrah, 5% Viognier, 1% Muscat) and a true winner for our grill-friendly wine list! Some people even consider a Rosé the best all-purpose- barbecue wine for summer. Sipping a crisp rosé is hard to beat. Open the bottle, pour it into the glass, and get excited! The scent of sweet berries with a hint of orange awaits you, bringing back memories of grandma’s strawberry jam, followed by a hint of minerality. This Rosé is truly a must-have wine for late afternoons and warm summer nights. What would we pair it with? Oh boy, the list is endless ... Did you know...Many Rosé wines are produced by a technique known as Saignée (“bleeding the vats”) which involves bleeding off the juice after limited contact with the skins. However, this 2010 Syrah Rosé has been produced from fruit that was specifically grown to create a true Rosé wine! Winning! Retail: $18.99 Alc./Vol.: 13.1% 72

St. Hubertus 2010 Rosé Frizzante VQA
Rosé St. Hubertus 2010 Rosé Frizzante VQA
Rosé wines have become more and more popular, in particular because they are considered to be the perfect summer wine. Especially the dry Rosé which is not too sweet but rather offers a crisp palate of ripe fruits with a hint of black pepper. The St. Hubertus 2010 Rosé Frizzante is made mostly from the Gamay Noir grape, blended with some Pinot Noir. It offers a wonderful crisp palate and a nose of cranberries, strawberries, cherry, and citrus. So good and with a special “frizzante” (lightly sparkling) aspect that makes it so refreshing. Enjoy this wine while it is young. So - picture yourself...sitting on the dock, or the beach, with your favourite book, sipping this fresh young Rosé. Delicious with most salads, sashimi, grilled salmon...and outstanding with a juicy Cheeseburger! Yep, we tried it! Did you know...That the vineyards of St Hubertus and Oak Bay are some of the oldest in the Okanagan Valley? The St Hubertus & Oak Bay Vineyards were originally planted in 1928 by J.W. Hughes. In 1984 they were purchased by Leo Gebert who was then joined by his brother Andy. Today the winery produces on average 14,000 cases of wine annually. Retail: $15.75 Alc./Vol.: 11.1%

Moon Curser 2010 Viognier Wait – Moon Curser? Yes...may we present...the most recent name change among Okanagan wineries: Twisted Tree Vineyards & Winery has become Moon Curser. Harry Potter fans will love the somehow eerie labels and the new logo. The name itself is a tip of the hat towards the gold smuggling history of Osoyoos, when smugglers were called moon cursers. The original name was inspired by a gnarled old fruit tree...which unfortunately had to be removed in 2006. The family owned boutique winery is located on the east bench above Lake Osoyoos and produces small quantities of hand crafted, premium varietals rather uncommon to the Okanagan. For our hot and sunny Okanagan summers we picked their 2010 Viognier as a true favourite with only 122 cases made. A very complex and fruity wine, the 2010 Viognier is an unoaked white and shows flavours of peach, papaya, and other tropical fruit. Well balanced and with the crisp acidity that makes it a great summer wine. We think this wine is a perfect compliment to anything with Asian flavours, but it’s also great with cheeses and seafood. Retail: $27.90 Alc./Vol.: 14.1% www.mooncurser.com
