It is hard to believe, but we are about to hit the one-year mark! ICON will be celebrating its 1 Year Anniversary, November 26, 2011. This time last year we were just uploading the files for our very first issue, not knowing how the Okanagan would accept its very own lifestyle magazine – and here we are now, with our 4th issue and a total of 240,000 copies distributed so far! It seems we found a niche with ICON, showcasing what makes our Okanagan life so special and the area so unique. Never before has a magazine in the Okanagan catered to their readers the way we do, and we are thankful for all the comments, suggestions, and especially the support we get from our readers and businesses near and far. In this issue you will find several smaller changes as we update the look and feel of the magazine. The layout has had its first update, and we hope you enjoy the new fitness and health insights and tips you will find in every issue from now on. Mark your calendars! November 7th is the launch-date for our brand-new website. A new layout, easy navigation, an online library with current and all past issues, a travel blog by our new travel editor and a load of other fun stuff – we hope you like it. Here is the best part– this time we are raffling off a cool set of headphones and an iPod Touch, so make sure you go online and take part in our Anniversary raffle. We hope you enjoy this issue and thanks again for all your support. In the end a magazine is nothing without its readers and supporters.

ICON Okanagan on Tour A Splash of Red

Caetani Cultural Centre, Vernon August 25 Now that was fun! A very well organized “A Splash of Red” had its premiere on August 25th at the Caetani Cultural Centre in Vernon. All 100 tickets sold out several days before the outdoor fundraising event was held, and with temperatures rocketing around the 34 degree mark, a dark blue sky, and an array of fantastic artwork on display, “A Splash of Red” was inevitably an incredible success. In addition to an aperitif reception, some great live music, and a three course Italian family dinner with wine pairings, it was the live art auction featuring 20 spectacular works of art that the attendees were clearly excited for. In the end more than $12,000 was raised for the Caetani Centre and its support for the evolution of Sveva Caetani’s vision of providing a location for an artistic and cultural centre in the North Okanagan. A great success! If you are wondering, yes there will be another one next year. We will keep you posted! www.caetaniculturalcentre.org

Made in the Okanagan Canada’s Electric Car With fuel prices at all time highs and no sign of reprieve in the future, alternative energy sources, hybrid technology, and electric power plants have become all the rage in the automotive industry. When it comes to the environmentally conscious consumer today, it is all about fuel economy and cost of exploitation when deciding on a vehicle. With this in mind, in 2009 brothers Andrew and Christopher Mynheer formed Von Mynheer Automotive Limited taking this reality by the horns and running with it. Armed with an extensive background in the automotive industry including the design, manufacturing, and sale of specialty after-market components for several brands including BMW-Mini, Renault, and Rover they developed

their own unique vision of what a vehicle should be. Having worked with high end automobiles including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, and Lotus, Andrew and Christopher understood the importance of top quality fit and finish as well as reliability and performance. Making use of their knowledge the brothers undertook two major research and development projects including the creation of a gasoline powered, composite and space frame bodied vehicle known as the “Bandit” as well as a complete racing conversion of the body and running gear of the BMW Mini. Next on the docket was a venture into the field of the electric vehicle, by adding excitement, innovation, creativity and high-tech specialization to the mix they have manufactured the absolutely stunning “Chico.” Powered by not only one, but two liquid cooled AC motors with matching controllers, the “Chico” boasts maximum power and performance. Managed by sophisticated electronics, and offering all the creature comforts the customer desires, this vehicle appeals to both the environmentally conscious consumer as well as the practical everyday motorist.

ing and power options while two-way fully adjustable nitrogen filled racing coil-overs offer complete control over your ride quality. Easily tuned, the “Chico” offers a multitude of performance options that cannot be found elsewhere. Depending on which battery pack you select, from the basic 150 ah to the 300 + ah, the vehicle will deliver a range of 50 to 100+ miles, respectively. And get this, the Chico has super-fast charge capabilities that allow you to top up your battery in just minutes depending on your charging facility, and in a typical charging scenario it takes no longer than 2 hours to load up. The brothers have even developed a secondary back up program that can be equated to a reserve tank found in conventional automobiles. With the twist of a knob, the vehicle is capable of a “crawl home” mode which allows the driver to return home on very little battery life. The “Chico’s” sexy curves, modern styling, high quality build and finish have really got us excited. We can’t wait to get our hands on one and take it for a cruise.

The “Chico” is the first in a new global breed of high tech, ultra-light, stylish and entirely electric vehicles designed for road use. The programmable regenerative braking combined with advanced controllers manage motor charg-

Soft-Lift Trends in the Beauty Industry Well, I guess at a certain point in our lives we find out that we are not getting any younger. It is just reality - starting with a wrinkle here and there, some fine lines, or age spots. All of these signs of aging get more and more visible every day. However, it seems that some of us have found the fountain of youth...or the perfect prescription for turning back time on the aging process. During our recent visit to the DermMedica Clinic in Kelowna, Dr. Craig Crippen took some time to tell us about some new treatments, and namely the”Soft-Lift Face Lift”. The 3D’s of the Aging Process • Descent: Droopiness or skin sagging • Deflation: Loss of facial volume • Deterioration: Fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture change By treating the 3 D’s of aging with a complete and holistic approach, you can achieve dramatic facial rejuvenation without losing your own natural look. “I tell patients to think of this as turning back the clock on your skin a number of years gently, doing so without the need for going “under the knife.”” Laser skin therapy, combined with no-downtime injectable treatments are now the most common procedures requested by patients. This trend of non-invasive and non-surgical skin treatments is only growing and has already overtaken those older surgical methods by a large margin. What is a Soft Lift™ treatment? A Soft Lift™ treatment is a personalized facial

rejuvenation treatment that combines the benefits of Juvéderm™ facial filler and a wrinkle smoothing injectable to help you look your best. A Soft Lift™ treatment addresses multiple signs of aging, including fine lines and loss of fullness, for optimal overall results without a facelift or other surgical procedure. Juvéderm™ is the #1 doctor recommended facial filler in Canada and North America. It is a soft replenishing, dermal filler used to smooth away unwanted lines and restore lost volume to the natural contours of your face. The results are visible instantly, look natural, and can last up to a year and a half. Juvéderm™ is made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in your body. It combines with the water in your skin to instantly smooth lines and wrinkles, enhance lips, and restore lost volume to the cheeks and jaw line. Hyaluronic acid facial fillers mimic the hydrating and lifting effects of your skin’s own natural hyaluronic acid. In addition, they can even stimulate collagen production in your skin. The idea behind Soft Lift™ is that by combining the treatments of Juvéderm™ Injectable GelVoluma™ dermal filler with BOTOX® Cosmetic you can get the best result possible with minimal downtime and maximal safety. With a Soft Lift™ treatment, you will look younger and the result will be very natural-looking. Gentle and completely non-surgical, it will instantly refresh your look in a single treatment.

If you’re ready to discuss what a Soft Lift™ can do for you, book your consultation with Dr. Crippen. www.dermmedica.ca Fall 2011

There’s Music in the Air!

OutCast Outdoor Wireless Speaker System I recently had the opportunity to try out the soundcast portable speaker system. Specifically the Soundcast Outcast, ICT 111 Ipod base station, coupled with an ICR 112 Wireless sender.

With a battery life of up to ten hours it will last you all day, and is

With all three of these products I was able to connect my in home stereo to the Ipod base station, which talked to the outcast portable outdoor speaker, filling my entire home inside and out with sound, all controlled through an ipod dock in the kitchen, far away from any other stereo equipment!! The technology is simple using a frequency similar to your portable phone, just jazzed up to avoid any interference that may come up (FHSS Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) After charging the speaker over night, I placed it out on the deck and simply turned it on, it connected with the base station within seconds and the music poured out of it. The Outcast is setup with an 8” downward firing subwoofer, a must for outdoor sound, and 4 speakers on the top half to create a full 360 degrees of resonance.

The Sound of Music Beats Solo HD with ControlTalk by Monster Ok, truth be told I shook my head when my fellow publisher recently showed me the new “Beats Solo HD” headphones by Monster at Andre’s Audiotronic in Kelowna. Especially after a quick look at the price-tag I had no doubt I would stick with the good old headphones that came with my iPod for quite a while. Well, that changed when both my buddy and the sales-person encouraged me to give them a try. WOW! That is pretty much all I could say.

metal play/pause/talk/voice control button you are in charge of the volume, skipping, and fast forwarding songs, while an outstanding microphone resides on the other side and makes sure you are provided with high quality hands-free calling.

Mind you, a retail price of $280 (MSRP) for the High-Definition version with ControlTalk is almost twice as much as my iPod nano had cost me, but what an incredible difference they make. It almost gives you the feeling of being in a sound studio. First of all, despite of their size, they are super comfortable. The well shaped over-ear cushions (I am tempted to say pillows) really seal out ambient noises, clearly showing that good passive noise cancellation can be nearly as powerful as battery-powered active noise cancellation (such as the one “Beats Studio” are equipped with) and once you listen to your favourite tune you are treated to a whole new experience. Gone are almost distorted hi and lo notes and no bass, the Solo HD delivers an amazing sound across the entire spectrum with nice clean (not overpowering) bass, strong mids and pristine highs. You just want to close your eyes and imagine you’re right there in the studio with your favourite artist.

The Bottom Line... I guess you’ve already got it – we love these headphones! In most circumstances it prevails that an individual pays more for the name than the product, but in this case I must say you get some very stylish (available in white, black, and even in a special edition in red) headphones, and the sound quality is definitely a cut above the rest.

By the way: The Solo HD comes with the same pivot and tilting mechanism found in the “Studio” which makes them very portable, and no batteries are required.

To be honest...I actually ended up buying the most expensive “Studio” version. Well...I guess the salesman really was good at his job after all! www.beatsbydre.com

The Solo comes with two red cables which include a three-button remote and microphone set – welcome to “ControlTalk for iPod.” With the swirled see page 12

Driving into our beautiful valley is often a surreal experience, beautiful mountains, rolling hills covered in lush vineyards, and beyond them a seemingly endless Okanagan Lake, sparkling as the sun reflects and the water ripples. This is home, and it is hard to believe there could be a more beautiful place to call home all year round. With such a massive lake as the focal point of our valley, it stands that lakeside living is very desirable in the Okanagan. This particular property stands out as exceptional; a gor-

Turning into the private drive way, the building is not immediately visible, tucked away at the end of a long narrow path, as you approach; the residence slowly comes into view. To the left a car port, followed by three single garage stalls side by side, ensuring all of your vehicles are hidden from the elements and securely stored. By opening the overhead door, the dining room becomes connected with the heated outdoor patio area offering expanded entertaining space for those big summer dinner parties. Just beyond the dining room lays the kitchen and eating bar. Incredible panoramic lake and mountain views make this the perfect place to cook up a fabulous gourmet meal while entertaining on a summer’s eve. Finding Solutions Family Mediation Center In his home country of Argentina, Daniel Mandelbaum earned a university degree in Psychology and went on to practice family therapy. This particular type of therapy dealt with families treating them as a correlated system unlike conventional therapy which concentrates on the individual. Daniel’s passion lay in helping people. More specifically, helping people help themselves. Since then, his career underwent several interesting twists and turns, deviating from his particular field of interest. After immigrating to Canada with his family, the conditions of his visa required Daniel to be an entrepreneur in order to create jobs. This, combined with the language barrier, steered Daniel away from his previous occupation. So, as per the conditions of his visa, Daniel and his wife opened their own store… several stores actually as they had mixed success. Having experimented with multiple enterprises, they finally persevered. By successfully running a company focused on importation for several years, Daniel finally became a Canadian citizen. Ultimately, Daniel and his family found financial security in Canada. With his children exploring the paths to their own success, he once again became excited about the pursuit of his passion. He began to think about how he could help people while deriving enjoyment from his work and started looking into family mediation. At first he was unsure, but with the support of his family and friends he became motivated to take courses offered throughout Western Canada which eventually lead him to his work with the Family Mediation Center. The primary focus of the Family Mediation Center is to help couples going through the process of separation to come to an amicable agreement. Their mission is to achieve this in a mutually beneficial manner while minimizing legal costs and preventing the separation from becoming hostile. Ultimately, the Family Mediation Center aims to resolve separation issues such as custody or finances while avoiding costly litigation. The mediators at the Family Mediation Center are 100% neutral and do not favor one side or the other. At the Family Mediation Center, mediation services are provided for family businesses, elderly issues, parenting plans, cohabitation, and much more. If you find yourself going through a divorce or separation, take the time to explore your options, “Helping You the Family Mediation Center Find Closure through may be the perfect choice for you!

ICON Okanagan on Tour Downtown After 5

Delta Grand Okanagan Resort August 31

Would you really call this a business meeting? Well, in the end – yes, because that’s exactly what Downtown After 5 is, a business networking event. Once a month for the past thirteen years the Downtown Kelowna Association has invited business owners to this networking event at a variety of interesting venues. The idea is to bring business owners together creating an opportunity to share ideas and to discuss anything business related in Kelowna in a casual atmosphere. This time we were very fortunate to enjoy Downtown After 5 at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort. Everyone relaxed on their beautiful terrace, with delectable appetizers and wine, beer, and a really tasty (alcohol-free) peach shooter, as temperatures were scratching the 30 degree mark under a deep blue sky the afternoon meet and greet was an incredible success.

1

Should you own a business in Kelowna or if you are interested in what is going on in the city, mark your calendar: Downtown After 5 takes place on the last Wednesday of each month and locations are announced on the Downtown Kelowna Association’s website at www.downtownkelowna.com

THE MOST DANGEROUS THING by Laura Lippmann

Laura Lippman’s newest novel shifts from present to past, telling the story of five childhood friends and the one fateful night that would change their lives forever. Gwen, Mickey, Sean, Tim, the Halloran brothers and Gordon, spend their summers together exploring the woods in the outskirts of Dickeyville, Baltimore. It is one of those the typical adventures young boys experience, but that all changes when tragedy hits the night of a terrible hurricane. The young group is shattered by the unforeseen, and each goes their own way. 32 years pass and the once inseparable friends have grown apart, become adults with their own families and their own lives, and forgotten about what had happened in the past, about the horrendous secret and the lie they all share. Gordon, the youngest and wildest of the five, is dead, either by accident or suicide, and when the friends come together one more time, the revelations start. They all realize that their lives have not been what they expected them to be. So, could the long-ago lie be the reason? Could it be the secret they wanted to forget that causes their troubles today? Is there someone from within their circle who is out to destroy them? We don’t want to spoil the story here, but The Most Dangerous Thing is an extremely fascinating, insight-

ful tale that becomes steadily more compelling as it proceeds to its final and shattering conclusion. By the way Lippman’s most famous character, Baltimore private investigator Tess Monaghan, makes a brief but pointed appearance in the book as well. The Most Dangerous Thing Hardcover: 352 pages Publisher: William Morrow ISBN-10: 0061706515 ISBN-13: 978-0061706516

About the Author Laura Lippman was a reporter for twenty years, including twelve years at the Baltimore Sun. Her Tess Monaghan books have won every major mystery prize including the Edgar, Shamus, Agatha, Anthony, and Nero Wolfe awards, and her novel “In a Strange City” was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She is also the author of five previous stand-alone novels: “To the Power of Three,” “Every Secret Thing,” “What the Dead Know,” “Life Sentences” and “I’d Know You Anywhere”—the last three were New York Times bestsellers. In 2008 Lippman’s award-winning short stories were anthologized for the first time in one volume, along with an original novella, under the title “Hardly Knew Her.” Fall 2008 also marked Lippman’s serialization in the New York Times Magazine with “The Girl in the Green Raincoat”—a continuation of her P.I. character Tess Monaghan. A recipient of the first Mayor’s Prize for Literary Excellence and the 2003 Maryland Author Award, she and her husband, David Simon, divide their time between Baltimore and New Orleans.

A Drive Less Ordinary

W

ith the brand-new 2012 Passat, Volkswagen is introducing the first car built in their Tennessee assembly plant. They will only produce models for the North American market and a quick look at the European version shows

slightly different styling, including an extra piece of glass between the rear window and rear pillar. ICON Okanagan had the opportunity to drive one of the first 2012 Passats here in the Okanagan, provided by Royal Volkswagen in Vernon.

Fall 2011

The Passat is VW’s mid-size sedan, built through six design generations since 1973. It’s name is derived from a period in history when Volkswagen named it’s vehicles after prominent winds, including the Golf (after the Gulf stream), Jetta (after Jet stream), Scirocco(after Sirocco). Passat is the German word for trade wind. For many years the Passat has essentially been a niche vehicle in Canada and the US, with the Jetta and Golf in the spotlight. Well, let’s just say Volkswagen has some big aspirations for the new Passat, expecting sales from the United States, Canada and Mexico to match the plant’s capacity for 150,000 units per year. So, what did they do to get on the shopping lists of the loyal Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion buyers? First of all they made the car longer than the outgo-

Fall 2011

ing model. By 104 mm, to be exact, with a 91 mm increased wheelbase, resulting in a very spacious and comfortable rear seat area. In fact, it has the longest wheelbase among its core competitors and on top of that has best in-class interior space. But there is more...or actually less - as the 2012 model is cheaper than its 2011 predecessor. A lot cheaper actually, compared to the 2010 model the buyer saves a whopping $3,800 when buying the $23,975 base model with a five-speed manual transmission! Not a bad deal. The question is, is it also a better car? Our first test car had the base 2.5-litre five-cylinder (the two other engine options are a 3.6-litre V-6 and a diesel-fuelled 2.0-litre TDI) with 6-speed automatic transmission. The “Highline” model with “Sport Package” had 18” inch alloy wheels, 8-way power ad-

ICON OKANAGAN

29

The sound-system in the “Highline” is by “Fender” (we had no clue they are in the business of car audio) and the 400W, 9 loud speaker / subwoofer combo system gives you a live-stage sensation. Really – we have never heard a better sound-system in this price range! The touch screen control-unit also includes a navigation system and dualzone climate control. Yes, Bluetooth is standard!

justable front seats, a Fender 400 Watt digital sound package, carbon interior trim, paddle shifters, leather sport seats and keyless entry with start and stop function. Ok, enough of the facts – and onto the road. We must say for a five-cylinder with only 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque the car is still rather peppy. It is not a sports car, but also not underpowered, and should you want the extra kick there’s always the 3.6l V6 engine with 280hp. What we really loved was the interior. It definitely has a

high-class luxurious look and the materials and build quality are top notch. There is plenty of head- and legroom, a number of storage areas, and the leather and suede seats are firm and very comfortable. The dash is well organized and logically laid-out and the chrome-accents work especially well with the dark colouration of our tester.

30

Oh, right, the fuel consumption. Kind of important these days, right? With gas at around $1.30 for Regular Unleaded, it is nearly everyone’s first question. VW says this car has a combined fuel consumption average of 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres. Not too bad – but if you really want to save on gas...then why not have a look at VW’s amazing 2.0l TDI diesel engine? The 2.0l engine may “only” produce 140 hp, but 230 lb.ft. of torque make the family car launch like a sports car with an average fuel consumption of just 5.5 L/100 km! Honestly – if you haven’t experienced Volkswagen’s TDI diesel engines yet, you should call the guys at Royal Volkswagen and book a test drive. They are nothing short of amazing; quiet, clean, powerful, and extremely fuel-efficient.

Bottom line The 2012 Volkswagen Passat is one of the best values in the mid-priced sedan class, and we predict it will do very well, and definitely contribute to Volkswagen’s ongoing success.

The Royal Treatment The Volkswagen Group’s mass-marketing machine is running full steam ahead to achieve their goal of becoming the world’s largest automaker come true. By the looks of it The German car manufacturer which also owns the Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, and Škoda brands is set to reach its goal by 2018, analysts predict, and with the inauguration of the Chattanooga Assembly Plant in Tennessee clearly they see sales in the North American market as a vital part of their growth. “The vehicles Volkswagen just introduced and the ones coming down the pipeline are very impressive,” says Royal Volkswagen’s General Manager J.M. Ledet. “Just look at the all-new Passat that you just test-drove, the new VW Touareg and the new 2012 Beetle.

Volkswagen is the leading manufacturer of diesel engines. Once you have driven a TDI you will know why Volkswagen has not really dabbled in hybrid technology very much. Try to beat the up to 1,200 kilometres that one tank of fuel will get you with the new Jetta TDI.”

They are almost tailored for our North American market and I am very excited about the amazing potential.” You can clearly feel that Ledet, who has worked at a large dealership in Vancouver before he became the General Manager at Royal Volkswagen, is not your typical salesperson but also a car-lover himself.

Royal Volkswagen is located on the south end of the Swan Lake auto mile and they not only offer the mos current Volkswagen models but also an impressive line of pre-owned vehicles, both from the German manufacturer and other brands. So if you are looking for a new or pre-owned car, just drive by or book an appointment to test-drive one of their new models.

“Volkswagen is a great company with the best value for your dollar. Just think about our current fuel prices and then look at the Volkswagen engines. This is what I call fuel efficient, especially the TDI diesel engines. A lot of people don’t know how fantastic these engines are.

Their friendly and knowledgeable staff will make sure you will experience the Royal Treatment.

Taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary! For a while now we had been hearing about a new restaurant downtown called Twisted Tomato Kitchen, and until a few weeks ago, had not had the opportunity to check it out. With numerous recommendations from friends and acquaintances alike, we were really interested in what this place had to offer and what the buzz was really all about. Dropping in on a Saturday evening, the dining room was bustling and alive with laughter and conversation. The sexy dim lighting and chic decor, create an alluring ambience that invites you to sit down, relax, and grab a bottle of red. This is the perfect place to head out on a casual date, dinner with a group of friends, or grab a couple drinks. The Twisted Tomato Kitchen is home of Chef Michael Lyon, a former engineering student turned star of FOOD NETWORKS feature program “Chef off.” He is also a two time back to back Gold Medal Plate winner. Chef Michael offers a wealth of experience and knowledge in the culinary world while adding his signature “French forward with a rocky mountain twist” style and mixing things up a little. Sitting down with owner Jason Troll, a lively and enthusiastic gentleman, he explained to us that the name Twisted Tomato came to him and his wife Michelle after a few too many glasses of wine, in an effort to explain 40

Buy The Sea! Seafood Market & Fish N’ Chip Shop In British Columbia we are blessed with some of the best seafood in the world. We are lucky to have over 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and plants, and let’s be honest; we all love a great seafood dish with a good glass of wine. Obviously, wine is taken care of here in the Okanagan, but where do we go if we really want quality seafood and knowledgeable service? Maybe that is what Mike Stokes thought when he moved to Penticton nearly 5 years ago. Having lived most of his life in Campbell River on Vancouver Island, managing a large marine business that worked closely with commercial and recreational fishermen, he had been playing with the idea of owning his own Seafood Market for quite some time. Fortunately he found a great seafood market with its own fish n’ chips shop in Penticton. It really must have been in the cards as a few days later, Mike was the proud new owner of the store. Sometimes things are just meant to be! That was in 2008, and just recently Mike opened his second store in West Kelowna. With a redesigned logo, his own systems and controls, he can now serve a much larger clientele, reaching from Kelowna to Penticton.

If you are looking for a place to party, enjoy the sun as well as a load of entertainment in the Valley, what better place could there be than on the beach with thousands of people. That is the concept behind the hugely successful Center of Gravity beach festival. This year it ran from July 29 to the 31 and was a massive hit. Selling out weeks in advance, people all over town were scrambling to find tickets to join the party at any cost. Luckily, our media access passes got us through the gates to join the crowd and rock out. This year’s event, held in City Park in downtown Kelowna, offered a very large variety of entertainment options. Between the three concert stages, the Bud Light Lime Pro Beach Volleyball courts, the Castanet Water Zone, Hoop Zone, Urban Zone, the grass volleyball courts, Dirt Zone, and the Moto Zone, you can imagine there was a lot to take in over the three days the festival ran. Huge headlining names including Busta Rhymes, Calvin Harris, Chromeo, Dev and the Cataracs, as well as Bad Boy

Bill were all on the docket to appear. Whether you hit the Flipside Beach Stage, Substenance Bass Stage, or the Sun FM Mainstage– you were sure to find an incredible party going down. Sadly, due to last minute complications and a grounded flight Busta Rhymes was unable to make an appearance, and although he was missed, the party went on as if nothing had happened. If jamming out and hanging by the stages, wasn’t exactly your deal there was plenty more to see. At the heart of the Center of Gravity Hot Sands Beach was the Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament where the finals were televised live on Shaw TV and the competition was on for a massive $11,500.00 prize pool. Watching the competitions while throwing back an ice cold Bud Light Lime was definitely a great way to spend a few hours. If you wanted to get more involved, you could even register to play recreational grass volleyball in mixed 4’s, open mixed 3’s, and open mixed 2’s. Meanwhile in the Water Zone, the wake boarder’s Winch Jam and the Lake Jump were where it was at! Boarder’s Dustin O’Ferrall, Matt Bibby, Drew Kennedy, Joey Norsworthy, and Chris Canue, were busting some crazy slides on the winch jam and just throwing down a great show in general. The Lake Jump looked like a blast too. More of a gear-head? Love the sound of a dirt bike ripping up a ramp while the rider attempts gravity defying tricks? Well at the Motozone professional freestyle motorcross riders; Reagan Sieg, Jeff Fehr, Kris Foster, Kyle Demelo, and Chris Nolan were offering up a mind boggling show. These guys were seemingly fearless performing back flips mid air without a wink of hesitation. Heading over to the Dirt Zone, Kelowna’s very own Steve Romaniuk aka “Romo” along with a load of other talented freestyle mountain bike riders also threw down a pretty wicked show. Finally, at the Urban Zone, a new addition to the festival for 2011, local riders were rocking out demos in BMX and Skateboarding. Hitting rails, quarter pipes, boxes, and even a massive half pipe the boys definitely blew the crowds mind. On top of the extreme sports, the L.U.X Krew Bboys were performing live to beats provided by JayWho Productions. Center of Gravity 2011 was a ridiculous success, we were so happy to be a part of it, enjoying everything the festival had to offer. It was definitely the highlight of our summer here in Kelowna and we cannot wait to head back next year. Make sure you plan early and get your tickets in advance next summer because this is one hot event. Check out www.centerofgravity.ca for more information.

Looking to express yourself in a new and interesting way? Well we have found the perfect thing. While updating our Facebook page, we happened upon a cool promotional video posted by a colleague and looked into it. It turns out there is a fellow by the name of Shane McDonald in Kelowna creating incredible one off custom footwear. We caught up with him and had the opportunity to learn a little more about him and his awesome new product! Here is what he had to say: Icon Okanagan: Shane, you have created a very unique product. Could you please tell us how you got into footwear customization? Social Statement: Like a lot of things cool, Social Statement happened rather organically and was actually born out of some personal tragedy. I went through a pretty major bout of depression over a year ago now. I finally took the time to take care of myself after years of ups and downs and see myself from a different angle now. Honestly, I didn’t like what I saw at all. So I set out to change my life and deal with some of the extremes I was feeling. After spending six months working on getting healthy, I realized I had an ability to connect with people. So I started to advocate and raise awareness for the voiceless when it comes to mental health initiatives in our community. That lead me to becoming a peer mentor for the Canadian Mental Health Association, teaching a course at the BC Schizophrenic Society to help people dealing with mental health diagnosis and speaking in schools and other public arenas on my experience with depression. Why do I say all of this? Well, when I was in the grips of depression, I took out a piece of paper and I wrote down a couple goals. In fact, I carry that piece of paper around in my pocket as a 24 hour reminder. It reads:

46

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

1) Read 2) Write 3) Give a damn about something 4) Do two things for yourself every day 5) Do one thing nice for someone else every day

Fall 2011

During that time I did all five of those things every day. I started to give a damn about the talents I had - the big one being art. The concept for Social Statement was about a year in the making and was originally going to be a website to be ‘socially conscious.’ I wanted to use my social skills and some social networking to make a statement in my community. The mental health system is broken and I wanted to do my part to change that by raising money and awareness. It was an enormous and lofty goal and I just did not have the time, money, or resources to make a reality. Social Statement went from a philanthropic idea and transformed into something else. My creativity and passion was back and I wanted to do something with it, it just turned out that the customization of footwear was it. It was not a conscious decision, it just sort of happened. It became a way for me to allow others to make their personal social statement - tell their stories if you will - through their footwear. So I spent five or six months doing product research, testing different materials, with everyone around me looking at me sideways. Once I was confident in the process, I approached local businesses and a few recognizable public figures to pitch them the idea of Social Statement. The feedback was amazing, it was a ton of fun and my passion for the process and the people translated well. Icon Okanagan: That was incredible story. Thank you for being so candid with us Shane. Could you tell us a little bit about what we can expect when we come to you to create our own Social Statement? Social Statement: First off, we have to select a shoe (leather, canvas or man-made materials), I can help with this or the customer can bring a pair they have already selected. Then the customer will provide me with some ideas, and a specific direction they would like to go with the design; colours, corporate branding, or personal background. After this, I will produce a digital rendering, giving the client a visual representation of the design for the approval process. Changes are made, or not and finally I begin the process of customizing your footwear. Within three weeks your brand new Social Statement shoes are ready to rock! Icon Okanagan: Shane, thank you for taking the time to tell us about yourself and Social Statement, it was a pleasure talking with you.

TEAS & WEAVES

premium loose leaf teas & hand knotted carpets, Penticton Claire Keys passion for tea, the culture surrounding it, the excitement of experiencing and finding new varieties and flavours, as well as her appreciation for the tea ware that comes along with it, in combination with her husband Fritz Hollenbach’s love of handmade textiles and hand knotted carpets created a curious fusion of two passions ultimately leading to the establishment of Teas & Weaves, “a fun and colourful shop in Penticton, B.C.” A native of Zimbabwe Claire worked in the wine industry for many years. As a culinary enthusiast and expert, she is extremely passionate about cooking, fine food, as well as fine wine. Having dedicated years to educating people in the subtleties of wine tasting and appreciation, she recognized the many similarities between wine and tea tasting. Both even share a very similar set of terminologies including, bouquet, body, aroma, astringency, terroir,

Over the past seven years Claire has steadily been sourcing a wide variety of interesting and teas, starting with 70 varieties, today she offers roughly 150! Every Saturday Clair hosts a tea tasting, where a broad spectrum of clientele drop in (men, women, teens, young adults, and the elderly) to check out what Teas & Weaves has to offer, often Claire finds herself sourcing teas for the specific taste of each client. Having grown grapes in the Valley for the past 25 years, Fritz was always eager to leave the Okanagan after the harvest and travel to exotic countries and explore culture. Fritz has a particular interest in purchasing primitive artwork, including textiles and carpets. Over the past 15 years, Fritz has amassed a serious collection of carpets from around the world. “You guys will love our fall and winter collection. It’s inspired by the Old West, the Pioneer days, with lots of flannel and denim. Think long duster coats, worn-out jeans, prairie blouses. And why not combine it with a cool hat and leather gloves? It’s a bit of the Wild West in modern times. Thinking about it – the Okanagan Valley has this almost desert-like look, so there you go! Have fun and go wild! Love, Dean and Dan”

An eerie light illuminates the walls, haunting, with ghostlike shadows dancing across the walls, giving the paintings an almost lifelike vivid aura. Cloaked in the light of hundreds of candles, the artwork seems to come alive, with colours steadily changing in the play of the shadows. The rest of the room lies in darkness, and the sweet sound of music wafting through the air, bounces back and forth among the walls. A glass of Night in our hands, we sit and enjoy the spectacle for several minutes. What a different experience this is. We are at Ex Nihilo Vineyards in Lake Country, where the rooms have been transformed into an art gallery. For the second time Jeff and Decoa Harder are hosting the Okanagan Erotic Art Show, this year’s theme: “The edge of Night”, we had just attended the opening night which drew a huge crowd to the winery. Now, just a 52

few days later, we are enjoying a private tour of the facility. Jeff and Decoa welcomed us into their new modern Mediterranean style winery, having launched their first vintage in 2008, Ex Nihilo only just opened its gates to the public in May of 2010. An entrepreneur who had owned several businesses in the past, Jeff shared his wife’s dream of starting their own winery for many years. With their family ties to the Napa Valley wine region, their background in brand development, strategic positioning and winery operations, it was a logical step to combine their talents and to establish their own winery. It was on their first holiday together when a visit to an art gallery in San Francisco would not only lay the foundation for the winery, but also give it its name.

quite some time, especially around Okanagan Center with beautiful vistas of Okanagan Lake and the neighbouring wineries. After making several trips to the area they eventually found what they were looking for. A hand painted sign on the side of the road caught their attention. Someone not only wanted to sell peaches, cherries and plums, but also a 10 acre property. The rest is history – Jeff called the number, and only 10 minutes later they met the

Not only did it mean that it would have to be created from nothing, it also reminded Decoa of how the grape vines suddenly appear out of the ground, producing the fruit which ultimately transforms into wine. Still, it would take several years during which the dynamic duo discussed buying land, planting a vineyard and starting the winery, before they made their final decision. “The land prices were skyrocketing,” Jeff remembers, “so we had to make a decision, and we did.” The Lake Country area had been a favourite of theirs for Fall 2011

his children’s children years from now. The Paulsons are weekend warriors coming out when they can. Jay runs a family cattle business in Alberta and Twila gives up all her holidays in the Insurance business to help pour wine during the spring and fall wine feasts. Jeff and Decoa can’t wait for Paulsons’ permanent arrival, which is planned to happen within the next 12-24 months. We guess that’s because their friends often accuse the Harders of being the busiest people in the world ... and to be honest, having spent a day with them we know this to be true. If you tied a camera to either one of them for a day it would be an exhausting journey. Their morning begins at 6:30am, getting the kids of to school. With an incredible team, Decoa pays very close attention to the details ensuring the visitors experiences are paramount, meanwhile Jeff is in another office on the phone, 60-100 calls a day, to Los Angeles, New York, Napa and wherever else business may be found, often to the wee hours of the morning as Hong Kong and London are on his radar as well. “It was a diamond in the rough” Jeff accounts. “We knew underneath the over grown brush and unkempt fruit trees, the property was asking to unleash its real potential.” It took countless long days, extensive manual labour, sweat and sometimes tears to bring the property to where it is today. During the evenings Jeff would sit for hours on the computer designing the Mediterranean/Italian neuvo villa. focus on the celebrity entertainment business. Together with Barbra Streisand’s long time manager, Martain Erlichman, they partnered with rock royalty, the Rolling Stones, to produce an Icewine from Ex Nihilo and a red wine called Satisfaction from operations in Napa. Rumour has it that Jeff is working on a celebrity whiskey project in the USA as well. Apparently there is also another famous English bloke looking to brand a wine and possible a winery with Jeff! Stay tuned... After getting the kids from school, Decoa shuttles the kids to the soccer field between dinner and homework. Jeff gets to the field just in time for Decoa to hand off the two youngest as she coaches the eldest. Jeff has just returned from a sound check where he delivered wine to friend Bobby Ritchie’s dressing room, aka Kid Rock. They race home to get the kids to bed with stories, Jeff’s youngest daughter picks up an in-house babysitting job, and the Harders whisk back stage to the concert. A glass or two gets poured after the show and Jeff and Bobby sing in the dressing room until 3am. Decoa, unimpressed by his singing (Jeff’s), persuades the duo to end their vocal battle for the evening. Bobby hops on his private jet and Decoa takes her singer ‘wannabe’ back home, where in a few hours they will get up and do it all again. Tomorrow, they are hosting a dinner in the winery for some guys that skate and shoot pucks for a living. Now we understand what Jeff meant when he told us “Work hard, play hard and always put the kids and family first!” Oh, right – we almost forgot to tell you about their amazing wines. But why don’t you just enjoy a truly unique Okanagan Valley wine experience yourself? Visit Ex Nihilo’s 8,000 sq.ft. ratatouille [rat-a-two-ee]: 2 Ways Generally, most Ratatouilles contain eggplant, zucchini, garlic, peppers and tomatoes. We have it all (and more) here in the Okanagan - (and you can use diced squash and carrots as well). Use anything seasonal and fresh and don’t forget the herbs! Fresh oregano and basil are classics - but use mint, chives, thyme - whatever you can find. The smaller you dice or slice, the more elegant the presentation (however, for Thanksgiving I make it extra chunky and top it with mozzarella). You can layer or try cooking each vegetable classically then add them to the final pot. This is an easier and quicker version: Okanagan Ratatouille

Method:

• • • • • • • •

First, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium low heat. Add the onions and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the zucchini, pepper, garlic and cook for about 3 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes and season with fresh herbs, salt, and pepper to taste.

1 red onion finely diced 4 tbsp olive oil 2 zucchini in 1/2” dice 1 red pepper finely diced 4 cloved chopped garlic 1 eggplant in 1/2” dice 4 large tomatoes in 1/2” dice fresh chopped herbs, salt & pepper

Turn the heat down and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature.

Ratatouille Crostini Method Make crostini ahead of time by slicing a baguette into 1/2” rounds. Lay onto a parchment lined cookie sheet, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and bake at 350° until light gold - about 10 min.

Place a tablespoon of Ratatouille on and pile some freshly grated mozzarella cheese on top. Bake until cheese melts about 5 min.

Halibut on Ratatouille Ingredients: • 3-4 oz Halibut per person • 4 tbs. olive oil • salt and fresh ground pepper • 8 oz Ratatouille • fresh basil & chive flowers for garnish 58

Well, Summer has come to a close. Let’s just hope we all enjoyed it to the fullest, even if it was a short(er) one. Before we weep uncontrollably let us look forward to a beautiful fall where dinner starts to drop into the cosier category and where we begin spending the evenings around friends and family indoors. Plenty of wines occupy this comfort zone, and once again we will try to make your decisions a little bit easier. Ok, let’s uncork some great grapey goodness. Enjoy the Fall!

Blasted Church 2010 Chardonnay Musque No, we did not pick this wine because of the label, but we must admit we love it. And we are not alone, as the Blasted Church labels were recently featured in a show at the San Francisco MOMA! Back to their wine, boy oh boy do we love their 2010 Chardonnay Musque. This is a very special Chardonnay. The fellows at Blasted Church produce their unoaked Chardonnay Musqué from a very rare Chardonnay clone with intense Muscat-like aromas, making it a perfect match for when it gets a bit cooler outside. It is a heavier white with quite a contrast between the sweet and floral nose and the crisp flavours - this really is nothing that you would expect from an unoaked Chardonnay. Please remember: You do not really have to put a heavy chill on a chardonnay. The cooler it gets, the less flavour it will have. We recommend 12°, so a little “warmer” than a regular Chardonnay. Thornhaven Estate 2010 Gewürztraminer Yes, many say it is a summer wine, but hey, we are different anyway, aren’t we? No, really, if there is a solution to matching a white wine with Fall, it is the Gewürztraminer. Too hard to pronounce? C’mon, just try it out: “Guh-WURZ-trah-meener.” There you go! Now that you have mastered this you should take the time to try this hard-to-cultivate but fullerbodied and easy-to-love wine. As a fellow wine connoisseur once said ... “your autumns may never be the same again!” Year after year the Gewürztraminer at Thornhaven Estate Winery proves to be a real winner, and so is the 2010. Cellar Master John Fraser and his wine making consultant Christine Leroux use grapes from six vineyards located around Giant’s Head Mountain in Summerland. They describe the 2010 Gewürztraminer as “spicy with floral characteristics and tropical flavours of citrus, peach, and honey balanced by zingy acidity” and recommend it with spicy foods or teriyaki stir-fry. Cassini Cellars 2009 Malbec Don’t cry for it, Argentina – it’s Tango-time in the Okanagan! Yes, Malbec is typically a grape found in Argentina or in the South of France (it originally hails from Bordeaux), but the winemaker at Cassini Cellars decided that the climate of the Okanagan is ideal for this variety. And yes, he was right! Even a cooler than typical season with a harvest in late October from their vineyards at the Golden Mile Bench allows for the development of a full structure and a fruity bouquet, showcasing flavours and aromas of blackberry, blueberry, dark cherries, and vanilla oak. Nice, soft round tannins with the typical but subtle hints of tobacco and vanilla with a nice mineral finish round this black-ruby coloured wine off. This Malbec was aged for 14 months in new and 2 year old barrels, 70% French, and 30 % American. We would recommend it with a pot roast, grilled rib-eye steak, or lamb. BUT – hurry up! Only a total of 85 (!) cases were produced with very few remaining (and if your local liquor store does not carry it just order it online from the Cassini website. The winemaker at Cassini says it will continue to improve with careful cellaring for 5 to 8 years Retail: $29.00 Alc./Vol.: 13.8%

The View Winery 2010 Riesling No, Barbara Walters is not the proprietor, but the red shoe on the label definitely has its own little story. Let’s just say there was a lot of dancing, and somehow the heel of one of her red pumps ended up stuffed into an empty bottle ... The rest we will leave to your imagination! The View Winery in Kelowna is a boutique winery that started in 2006. Today President Jennifer Turton-Molgat, winemaker Bernhard Schirrmeister, and their team bottle around 1,500 cases a year. Our pick, the 2010 Riesling, just made it to the finals of the 2011 Okanagan Spring Winefest. The Riesling wine originated in Germany (try it: “Reeeees-ling”) and is quite popular in the wine world. The good thing lies in its food pairing versatility. From appetizers to desserts, the diversity of Riesling styles can handle it all (we had it with a seafood ravioli – fantastic!). Hmm – it is German, so why not have a pork hock with it? We have to remember it the next time we go to the Oktoberfest. Anyway - The View’s 2010 Riesling has a very intense nose with lots of fruit aromas, mainly apple, and peach, whereas the undertones have a subtle almost spicy edge. Crisp and refreshing ... delicious! We also asked the The View winemakers for the perfect pairing ... and got a “Sitting shoes…the ones that you cannot walk in ” as an answer. Hmm ... The Perfect Match Basic Principles of Successful Food-Wine Pairing

by Melissa Brown www.wineandlaughter.com

Pairing wine with food can be a tricky and complicated subject. Here are a few basic things to think about when pairing a wine with your dinner: Match the weight of the food with the “weight” or body of the wine. If you forsake all others this is the one to remember. When having a light meal then pick a wine that isn’t too heavy and vice versa. Match the flavour intensity of the food and the flavour intensity of the wine. If you are having flavour-rich bbq ribs for dinner, you probably want to pair them with a full-flavoured red wine like a Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, or one of my favourites, an Old Vine Zinfandel. Match acidic foods with equally acidic wine. If you are having pasta with a tomato sauce, which is quite acidic, pick a wine that is equally acidic or else the wine will taste very lifeless and flat. Match sweet foods with sweet wines. If you drink a glass of wine that isn’t as sweet as the food you are eating it will seem quite tart or sour. Can you imagine having a Sauvignon Blanc with a piece of apple pie? Having a nice glass of Gewürztraminer with that same apple pie would be great though. Avoid combining oily or very salty foods with high-tannin red wines. This is hard to remember but you can impress your friends with this one. Drinking a high tannin wine like a

62

ICON OKANAGAN

www.icon-okanagan.com

Cabernet or Shiraz with oily food, a common example being fish, can leave a unpleasant metallic taste in your mouth. Also, high tannin reds can taste quite bitter when combined with salty foods. In these cases most people just think that the wine isn’t very good, but really it is a result of the pairing. There are lots of other nuanced factors to consider when pairing wines with food, but these are the basics. One of my favourite pairing tricks is drinking a sweeter wine like a Gewürztraminer or Riesling with spicy foods. Red wines with higher tannins actually make spicy food seem spicier. Another trick is if you are going to have a regional food like Italian, try it with an Italian wine. In most cases it will work out great. I urge you to go out and try a wine that maybe you wouldn’t normally try. Paired with the right food, you may be shocked at how much you enjoy it. Wine terminology broken down: Tannins: Tannins are only found in red wines and come from the grape skins. The amount of tannin depends on how long the skins were in contact with the juice in the winemaking process. Thicker skin grapes like those used for Cabernets and Syrahs have more tannin than thinner skinned varieties like Pinot Noir. You can feel the presence of tannins by the drying sensation on your gums. Acidity: Acidity in wine causes your mouth to water. It is present to some degree in all wines and makes a wine taste refreshing. High acidity wines include Sauvignon Blancs and Rieslings. It can be detected by a tingling on the sides of your tongue. Body: Body is a word used to describe the feel of the wine in terms of the weight and richness. This term can be used for white or red wines. Fall 2011

Here is a great Autumn soup with a Rustic Bruschetta that will pair with both red and white wine..... Wine recommendations: Ex Nihilo Vineyards 2008 Night or Ex Nihilo Vineyards 2010 Riesling

Autumn Squash Soup Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large pot Add 1 large onion finely chopped and 4 minced garlic cloves. Saute until tender (about 10 min). Add 1.3 liters (or 3 x 14.5 ounce cans) of low salt chicken broth, 4 cups of 1 inch pieces of peeled butternut squash (about 1.5lbs) 4 cups of 1 inch pieces of peeled acorn squash (so 8 cups in total of squash). Add 1.5tsp of minced fresh thyme Add 1.5tsp minced fresh sage. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until squash is tender. Working in batches, puree soup in blender and return to pot. Stir in 1/4 cup whipping cream and 2tsp sugar (can use white but I prefer brown). Bring to a simmer and season with salt and pepper. *Just a note, please use real cream and butter. It is what give the soup that rich taste….butter and cream is what makes French food so good! This soup is great to make ahead of time.

Rustic Italian Bruschetta Combine

2 cups assorted and chopped cherry, grape and teardrop tomatoes 1/2 finely chopped small red onion 3tbsp of your best quality olive oil 3tbsp chopped fresh basil 1.5tbsp balsamic vinegar in a medium bowl. Cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 2 hours, tossing occasionally. For the bread you can either use focaccia that you cut in half horizontally. Or for a lighter snack, use a fresh baguette sliced into 1.5″ rounds. Preheat the broiler, brush bread with olive oil and toast bread until golden brown. Watch bread carefully, it browns quickly! Remove bread from oven and immediately rub cut side of bread with a half a clove of garlic. Top toasted bread with tomato mixture and serve. *As an option, you can sprinkle a little cheese of your liking on the bread before you broil and omit the garlic. Sometimes I like to add roasted red peppers and chopped green olives to the tomato mix for a variation. Fall 2011

The Art of John Delaney Did you know that we have an Emmy Award winning Storyboard Artist, Director, Designer, Animator and Comic Book Artist living here in the Okanagan? Someone whose client list reads like the who-is-who of the industry? From MGM, Universal, 20th Century Fox, to Warner Bros., Hanna-Barbera to The Walt Disney Company? Someone who was and is heavily involved in the world of comics, penciling characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Justice League, Futurama, and The Simpsons? No? Welcome to the club – as we had no clue ourselves. It was a phone call from Kelowna’s very own RCMP spokesman Const. Steve Holmes who put us in the know. At first we thought that one of our publishers had yet again left a company car in a no-parking zone, but to our surprise Steve just wanted to inform us that one of the best comic artists in the industry had recently moved to Kelowna. His name? John Delaney. If you are not a fan of comics and have never heard his name – well, that is about to change! We met John in a typical relaxed Okanagan setting, over a beer and some very hot wings, to discuss his career and shed light on why he decided to make the move to the Okanagan. ICON Okanagan: John...I guess the question we all now have is – “How, where and why Const. Steve Holmes?” Did you get pinched for something at some point? John Delaney: Hahaha, nope, not yet! Steve and his wife met me and my wife in Playa Del Carmen in Mexico in 2004. We were all vacationing there and his wife struck up a conversation with us. They are both such sweet and personable people we immediately made a connection and stayed in touch over the years. Back then we still lived in Vancouver, and when we moved to Kelowna two years ago we reunited. Go figure. ICON Okanagan: Yep, small world! Well, the next question most of us will have is... “How does a Canadian end up working as an artist and designer in 2D & 3D for some of North America’s top studios and not only that but what is he doing up here in the Okanagan?” John Delaney: Ok, that’s a couple of questions in one. Let’s see.

I grew up in a home that really celebrated art. My mother was a great influence on us. She had great drawing and painting talent and drawFall 2011

ing was very encouraged in our home. My whole family have artistic leanings from painting to cartooning to sewing and design to music, so I think it came with no surprise that I wanted to become an artist. BUT - I actually originally wanted to be a successful musician! I played and sang in bands in the bar scene and university dances for years. I wrote and recorded a lot of music and was very determined to have a career as a professional musician. ICON Okanagan: But you did study art? John Delaney: Yes. I graduaed with a Commercial Art certificate from Sturgeon Creek Vocational in Winnipeg Manitoba, and immediately began picking up freelance drawing gigs such as restaurant posters and signage. Because I had a strong work ethic and was creative I found I got a lot of repeat customers. I had to work retail jobs to supplement the income but it kept me working as an artist. However all the while I continued to work on my drawing and every six months I sent in a submission package of comic book pages to DC Comics and Marvel Comics. I figured that I could gauge my artistic growth by giving myself a deadline every ½ year to do up four full pages and see what would happen. ICON Okanagan: And Animation?

John Delaney: That actually came into the picture when my brother graduated from Sheridan College’s animation program. He set up “Delaney and Friends Cartoon Productions” in Vancouver and when I was 19 I moved to work there and my brother and his partners taught me animation and helped me refine and develop my drawing skills more. ICON Okanagan: Perfect – now we are already in Vancouver. We are getting closer! By the way – I guess it was never a problem with your parents then that you decided to try your luck in art? Most parents would mostly likely have a heart attack and try to convince their child to become a lawyer or doctor? John Delaney: Hahaha, yes, true, but no, coming from a home that encouraged art I never felt any pressure to do anything other than what I wanted to do. My parents were realistic but very encouraging. My brother the painter became a lawyer, though! ICON Okanagan: Say, most if not all of the big companies involved in comics and animation are in the US. So did you at any time have to move to the US to do the job? John Delaney: I’ve had to go to both New York and California on several occasions for meetings at both DC Comics and Bongo Comics but I’ve never had to move there because

by the time I began working in the comic book industry they were already using out of town freelancers and FedEx. That was 19 years ago now. Man does time fly. ICON Okanagan: Tell me about it! Now, drum roll...why the Okanagan? John Delaney: After working in Animation for the past 26 years my reputation and work history has allowed me the ability to work from pretty much anywhere with internet connectivity. My wife had been coming to Kelowna for years to visit family and she had long wanted to move out here, so we did. And we love it! See, I love to sit in a coffee house or a pub and do some work there. You will find me with tons of papers around me, pencils, and my cell phone. Let’s call it my mobile office. ICON Okanagan: Not too bad I would say! But does this

mean that in this digital world you still draw by hand, with pencils? Or will we also see you in a pub with a big-screen laptop and digitizer? John Delaney: Well, I rarely take a laptop with me but yes, most of my animation work is done on a Wacom Cintiq, a digital tablet on which you draw directly on the screen. Most everything I do in animation is done digitally but Bongo Comics still like me to send in penciled drawings on board. As well I still rough a lot of my work in a smaller “thumbnail” penciled version which I then blow up to full size on the computer to clean it up. So I often go to a coffee shop or pub to sketch out the roughs before I scan them into the computer to “clean them up” for sending in. And before you ask: McCullough Station pub is a particular favourite place because it has a very big bar that I can draw on and the people there are great about it. ICON Okanagan: Cool. So - do you personally prefer digital over conventional drawing methods? John Delaney: Really depends on the job. If it’s a full color design job working digitally just makes sense. If I’m directing a show like “Voltron Force” everything is done digitally from initial design to final delivery. Even the scripts are sent in digitally. In comics there’s just something so traditional and organic to drawing in pencil that I’m not in any hurry to give that up. ICON Okanagan: You have penciled the most famous characters in the comic world, but who is your favourite character and why? John Delaney: Superman! While I love drawing the humour of The Simpsons and Futurama because it is so in sync with

my own humorous sensibilities I have always loved the iconic design of Superman. I love the idea that a being capable of almost everything chooses to help others for no other reason than it is the right thing to do. ICON Okanagan: Here’s an interesting one: Some people may say “Comics? That’s stuff for kids.”. Your response... John Delaney: ... is, that those people haven’t read comics. Comic books are a unique art form that transcends one type of audience. Certainly there are comic books aimed at and created for younger audiences and there always should be. But comics today are so varied in content that there is something published that will appeal to all age groups, all interests and all subject matter. ICON Okanagan: Let’s chat a little bit about the job itself. Do you get a simple phone call from one of those companies? John Delaney: For comics its usually a call to see if I’m available. If I am, then I am sent the script. Once I read it over I’ll ask the editor for any reference material he might have. Once I get that I get started on the “thumbnail roughs. These are typically about 1/3 the size of a completed penciled page. Once I’ve roughed out all the pages I scan them and send them to the editor for approval. He’ll make a few small changes that usually have to do with positioning for speech balloons then those are sent back and I’m given the go ahead. The editors usually give us 6 weeks to pencil a book but after this many years I’m pretty fast and organized so I do them in about 4 weeks…usually ;) Fall 2011

ICON Okanagan: Most artists that I know who work in the comic or fantasy field really live this life...meaning their studios look like a giant comic book store with books, sculptures, figurines, props, artwork, a Playstation and a big screen TV...yours? John Delaney: You’ve been to my house? Haha...no, actually I don’t have a Playstation...anymore. It sucks up too much productivity. My studio shelves are lined with action figures and comics, DVDs, posters etc. and I love movies! ICON Okanagan: Superhero movies are “in:” The Dark Knight, SpiderMan, Iron Man, X-Men, and the upcoming “The Avengers” and “Superman” to name but a few. Why do you actually think they have become so popular? John Delaney: Superheroes are our modern myths. Just like the stories of Paul Bunyan or the Greek Gods of Olympus there have always been stories of beings with incredible www.icon-okanagan.com

powers. Tarzan and John Carter of Mars were published long before the arrival of Superman so it is easy to see how each generation embraces the fantastic. For the past 70+ years since the arrival of Clark Kent, it has been superheroes. The serials of the forties featured Superman, Batman, and Captain America. The fifties, sixties, and seventies had heroes depicted in new ways on television with the George Reeves Superman, Adam West’s Batman, and Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman. When Superman the Movie came out in 1978 it was the pinnacle of what could be done with special effects and was very costly. Batman in 1989 showed that the characters could be depicted in a somewhat more serious tone and with the way special effects have leapt forward characters like Green Lantern, Iron Man, and Thor can be properly depicted on the big screen. ICON Okanagan: Which one is your favorite superhero movie? Which

well. Worst? I’d have to say the Fantastic Four movies kinda let me down. They were just so trite and lacking any emotional depth which is at the heart of the Fantastic Four comic book. And the Green Lantern movie has way too much story to try to cram into one movie. It should have been done as a planned trilogy and given more room to breathe and really tell the epic story it should have been. ICON Okanagan: Which super hero movie are you anticipating the most? John Delaney: I would love to see a big screen Wonder Woman movie. They only need to look to DC’s Wonder Woman animated movie on DVD to see how that could be done right. ICON Okanagan: What are you currently working on? John Delaney: Currently I am working on Futurama the comic book, The Simpsons, and I’m storyboarding on Transformers Rescue Bots. The series I just finished directing “Voltron Force” is running on Nicktoons as we speak. Canadians can log onto www.nicktoons.com and click on the Voltron icon to see new episodes online. ICON Okanagan: We will definitely do that! John, thank you so much for taking the time for this interview!

would you consider the worst? John Delaney: My favorite is definitely The Dark Knight. I have a great fondness for Richard Donner’s Superman the Movie as 68

Fall 2011

According to our “most beloved” online encyclopedia, “A ceramic knife is a knife made out of very hard and tough ceramic, often zirconium dioxide (ZrO2; also known as zirconium). These knives are usually produced by dry pressing zirconium powder and firing them through solid-state sintering. The resultant blade is sharpened by grinding the edges with a diamond-dust-coated grinding wheel. Zirconium ranks 8.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, compared to 6 to 6.5 for hardened steel, and 10 for diamond. This very hard edge (wikipedia.org) rarely needs sharpening.” Ceramic blades have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traditional steel knife manufacturers jumping on the band wagon launching ceramic knife lines. But let’s be honest...what do we actually know about ceramic knives, other than that they are usually pretty colourful. With a large variety of “wannabe” regular knives showing up at the bigger retail stores and warehouses, trying to resemble the look of ceramic blades, it is easy to get confused? Where are the differences between a ceramic knife and a metal knife? Ok, that is a fairly simple answer. In the end the only difference is the material. The material the blade is made out of to be exact. Ceramic knives are made of zirconium and retain their razor-sharpness 10-15 times longer than steel (even high-carbon steel) knives. They are also harder than any other cutting tool (except diamond), and lighter than steel – so light that the moment you pick up a ceramic knife you will feel an almost unparalleled balance. And

did you know that unlike metal, advanced ceramic won’t transfer bacteria, odours, or metal ions (it is corrosion free) that can brown foods? Only when you actually begin using the knife the main advantage becomes clear. The Ceramic blade has a smoother surface than steel, enabling it to slice through any type of food effortlessly. Yes, it is an “experience like no other.” You have to try it to believe it. As with all good things there are most likely some cons, and a ceramic knife is no exception. A ceramic blade is brittle. Wait, didn’t we just say harder than steel? Yes, but that does not mean it is not breakable. So don’t cut hard or frozen food. In the end a ceramic knife is no real replacement for your ordinary cutlery, it is more of a complementary addition. And yes, it is more expensive than a regular knife (although there is no real difference compared to high end chef’s knives made out of steel). Even though it is often said that ceramic blades need no sharpening at all, it is not entirely true. A ceramic blade will perform well for quite some time but will (later rather than sooner) need some sharpening which should only be done by a specialist (as diamond wheels are required to sharpen ceramic knives). Kyocera even has a free lifetime blade sharpening service (you only have to pay for shipping.) So is it worth the investment? As with all tools...if you use them a lot you definitely want to invest in the best (hey, that rhymes!) If you are a passionate cook, you will love the advantages of a ceramic blade for certain jobs in the kitchen – but you will also want to make sure you have invested equally in some great steel knives for the rest. The Revolution Series Kyocera, based in Kyoto, Japan, is the premier manufacturer of ceramic cutlery and cooking tools with 50+ years of experience in ceramic materials. The Revolution series which we show here is their most popular line, available in black or white with ergonomic plastic handles for precise control. This line is ideal for slicing fruits, vegetables, and boneless meats. Available in 8 sizes www.kyoceracutlery.com

If you are confused, bored, unmotivated, or stuck in a rut here is something for you, The Ultimate Health & Fitness 101 on exercise & nutrition for results! If your workout program (or lack of a workout program) is not delivering the results that you want, what you need to do is shake things up! Because when nothing changes, nothing changes!!! Doing new things is exciting for both the body and the mind. Want to get healthier, leaner and more fit? Not sure where to start? Since results are at least 80% diet let’s start there. Here are my top 10 nutrition tips and changes to make to achieve better health and a lower body fat: 1. Stop counting calories! It’s about quality, not quantity. Cut the crap and eat healthier foods. 2. Eat breakfast! It’s not just an old saying, it really is the most important meal of the day.

7. Know the difference between whole grain and multi grain. Whole grain products actually use the whole grain. A multi grain on the other hand isn’t whole, it is merely a product that uses a variety of grains.

3. Reduce sugar intake to less than 15 grams per day and never more than 9 grams during one sitting (your body can only effectively manage 9 grams at once). An all natural replacement for sugar that is also zero calories and has no effect on blood sugar is called stevia. Check out your local health food store to try it.

8. Make sure you are getting 3-5 servings of lean protein every day. This can come from eggs, fish, seafood, poultry, lean beef, legumes, nuts and nut butters to name a few. Proteins are the building blocks of life - your body needs protein to maintain and repair itself - it is a major part of your skin, muscles, organs and glands.

4. Avoid all things white. White bread, white pasta, white rice, also 99% of all cereals all have the same effect on your blood sugar as eating white table sugar. Choose fibre and nutrient dense complex carbohydrates like oatmeal, brown rice, brown rice pastas, whole breads, and yams.

9. Eat lots of water rich foods. We all know that you should drink lots of water to stay hydrated and maintain proper digestive health but did you know that eating produce counts towards your water intake?

5. Read food labels. If you have a hard time pronouncing the ingredients... It is not a healthy choice. 6. Eat more vegetables. Simple and effective! They are a great source of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, phyto-nutrients, water and fibre.

10. Keep it real - 3 words that sum up healthy eating quite simply. Avoid processed and packaged items and stick to foods that were picked, pulled, grown, raised, chased, or hunted.

ICON Okanagan on Tour Okanagan Erotic Art Show

Ex Nihilo Vineyards, Lake Country September 1 “The Edge of Night” was the theme of the fourth Okanagan Erotic Art Show. For the second time now, the show was held at Ex Nihilo Vineyards in Lake Country which once again has proven to be the perfect location for the event. A total of 70 works of art were on display, ranging from canvas pieces, to sculptures, photography, and even holograms. “When deciding on a theme for this year’s show, we wanted a connection between the winery and the art. The Edge of Night is a melding of the concept of making of a wine, in this case Ex Nihilo’s “Night” and the art produced by artists,” organizer Julia Trops explains. “The night is a special time that brings an element of sensual being and there is always a story or two that goes along with that,” Jeff Harder of Ex Nihilo Vineyards adds. More than 300 people attended the opening night on September 1st with most of the artists in attendance. The proceeds from admission have been donated to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of Breast Cancer Research. Next year’s show will be open to all artists, internationally.
