It was a warm, sunny Okanagan day! Well, to be honest, it was the only day of the week that was overcast and cold ... but our amazing photographer, Nikki Harrison, was more than happy: “The perfect light!” ... only our cover model, Amanda Shatzko, had a skeptical look on her face when Nikki asked her to step into the cold waters of Shannon Lake in West Kelowna. With her easel, fully dressed in a beautiful white gown. Let’s just say, the few people that were out that early in the morning were quite surprised! So were the ducks ... You can see the final result on page 21. The cover picture was taken the same morning with Okanagan Lake in the background. Thank you Nikki for an amazing job! And welcome to the Okanagan! And thank you, Amanda ... we told you it would be fun, right? Plus we could enjoy a glass of Ex Nihilo’s new sparkling wine!

14 THINGS THAT ARE OVER WHEN YOU’RE 30
W
hile the title seems a bit dramatic, the reality is simply that as we get older we are meant to evolve.
Even though there are things or attitudes that need to be deleted from our life as we age, it doesn’t mean we are doomed to suffer through it. Getting older can be a process full of happiness and beauty, or for those who fight it, it can be an ugly and sad endeavor. I am sure we have all seen those “fighters.” It’s time to just go with it, accept it, and adapt! If you’re in your 30s, this stuff should be over and done with: Credit card debt – You’re old enough now to realize that if you can’t afford it, you probably shouldn’t buy it. If you do use credit, maybe try something that isn’t 19.5% interest? Waiting to clean the toilet and tub until it’s pretty much a science experiment – Gentlemen, please take some pride. Seeking approval – By this point in your life, there should be a significant supply of self esteem built up in the reserves. It is time to realize that what people think of you is really all about them. Kraft Dinner – You are at that age now when you actually need to start paying attention to your health! I love Kraft dinner as much as the next guy, but it would be healthier to eat the box Artistic facial hair – Maybe we should just stick to the basics for now. That chinstrap was great when you were in the Backstreet Boys though. Your gym bag as luggage – Unless you are sponsored by Nike, it’s probably time to get a canvas or leather bag that isn’t a portable billboard for. Sentimental porn – Rid yourselves of those favourite
videos you have hidden under your socks from the days when the Internet was too slow. Sleeping-in all weekend – Once in your 30s, you should be at a place where you can appreciate a morning run, a walk, or even getting out for breakfast. Leave sleeping until noon for your 20s and get outside to enjoy the AM portion of your day. Avoiding the Doctor – Things that will become big issues when you’re 60 are probably already small issues. Suck it up, man-up, and get in for your yearly physical. Jewels on your clothing – Unfortunately the days of bedazzling are over, and it’s time to accept the fact that your clothing should no longer reflect light in the nightclub you’re probably wearing it in. The un-made bed – Seriously...make your bed in the morning. Shots of more than liquor – I wouldn’t advocate never doing shots (because it can make for a fun night), but try to evolve to a place where you stick to just one type. Maybe try to avoid bright colours, too. Futons – No futons. Hand signs in pictures – Please stop with the “reverse peace” sign and the “shocker.” You’re too old for that. It has been said that 40 is the new 30. If that’s true, then you may have just bought yourself another decade to get it together. If it isn’t true though, and you still enjoy many of the items above, you may have to get to work! It isn’t a big deal to commit to moving gracefully through the stages of life and simply acknowledging that while it may be a bit more work, a bit less sleep, or breaking a couple habits, it is absolutely worth it. Your toilet, and the guests who use it, will thank you. By Kathryn Helmore A local artist is going to great lengths to create internationally acclaimed paintings; she does it while performing acrobatics in mid-air. “My career shows that you don’t have to take one path, you can think outside the box and make your own path,” said Amanda Shatzko. “I describe my work as Cirque Du Soleil meets painting.” Growing up in Vernon fostered Shatzko’s exceptional career. “Vernon is a very athletic and adventurous place, so it was only natural to practice dance and gymnastics. However, it is also a very artistic community, so painting, alongside dance and gymnastics, was also encouraged,” said Shatzko. photo by Andrew Chin
However, it wasn’t until attending Vancouver’s Emily Carr University of Art and Design that Shatzko was inspired to combine her talents. “Both gymnastics and painting take time, so it was becoming increasingly difficult to divide the two and still excel. I was tired of having to choose so decided to do them together” said Shatzko. Shatzko’s work is also inspired by her travelling. “Having travelled and worked internationally in over 25 countries, I was inspired by the vast landscapes and intriguing people i met along the way,” says Shatzko. “My painting style was formed from my experiences adventuring across oceans, climbing mountains, wandering village streets, touring museums to participating in tribal dances and listening to locals share their heritage stories and art with me.” Shatzko’s performances frequently involve her hanging 50 feet in the air painting on a large suspended canvas while simultaneously performing acrobatics such as flipping upside down or doing the splits. The performance is a dramatic spectacle. The transitional nature of her painting style is an expression of her life. “My transition style paintings are how I express my experience and story,” explains Shatzko. “I continually encounter different people and landscapes that embody greatness. All diverse but they share an essence of movement and change in order to progress and prosper.” “Being commissioned to live paint athletes at the Whistler Olympic and Paralympics Games was certainly a highlight of my career alongside my New York City exhibition which displayed my work on 25-storey-tall billboards,” said Shatzko.
Among these accomplishments, Shatzko has also exhibited with International Gallery Container Art which drew 800,000 visitors, performed live for film and television and designed private collections for numerous international, corporate and celebrity clients. This year, Shatzko is excited to take on the role of ambassador and spokesperson for BC Culture Days, a weekend celebration of culture Sept. 25-27. www.amandashatzko.ca /AmandaShatzko @amandashatzko

So if you look at my art and hear whispers of an adventure, feel goosebumps across your skin, taste a smile playing across your lips, a smell of sweet memories, a feeling you can’t explain... automotive Acura NSX Finally! Ever since Tony Stark (aka Ironman) introduced the prototype on the big screen we couldn’t wait for the release date. Well, the production version of the highly anticipated mid-engine Acura supercar is here ... and it is a true supercar: With weight-saving construction combined with a hybrid powertrain that has three electric motors, a mid-mounted twin-turbo V-6 (more than 550 hp), a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive we can’t wait for our first test-drive later this year! Cadillac’s electrified luxury coupe, the ELR received many upgrades, including a more than 25 percent boost in power and torque, faster acceleration that improves the sprint to 100 km/h by 1.5 seconds, higher top speed, retuned chassis and steering for better handling, more responsive brakes and a new Performance equipment package.
Cadillac ELR
“The prestige sedan has been reinvented.” The CT6 is Cadillac’s answer to Germany’s large luxury sedans that have dominated the market for years. Available with a 3.0L V6 TwinTurbo engine.
Hyundai Tucson Cadillac CT6
Once more Hyundai’s European design studio has created an appealing vehicle, this time the replacement for the popular Tucson CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle). 1.1-inch wider than its predecessor, and 3.0 inches longer, the 2016 offers greater interior space and cargo volume. The 1.6L turbocharged engine produces 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. The Tucson is expected to arrive at the dealerships in just a few weeks.
Mercedes-Benz GLE The GLE is the renamed M-Class ... and the brand-new Coupe, which isn’t really a coupe, is the stylish competitor to the BMW X6. It comes with a powerful 362-hp biturbo V6 engine and permanent all-wheel drive - and if that is not enough - no problem, the GLE 450 AMG SPORT 4MATIC Coupe is powered by a thrilling 362-hp biturbo V6 engine! Arriving in dealerships later this summer.
You can already test-drive the 2016 Mazda CX3 crossover - a cool mix between a hatchback and a SUV. And enjoy its SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and the available all-wheel-drive. Available in 3 different trims (GX, GS, GT), starting at $20,695

Worth waiting for ... from small to superluxury cars. An Editor’s Pick. It happens at the Chicago, Geneva and New York auto shows, when car manufacturers are pulling the sheets off their all-new and redesigned cars, trucks and SUVs, giving us an even clearer look at the new cars heading our way for the 2016 model year.
Smart ForTwo The new Smart fortwo is slated to arrive in Canada this fall. And it comes with more than just a new look: 5-speed manual or the optional twinamic six-speed dual clutch transmission, a power increase to 88 hp, new tridion safety cell, smartphone integrations, new axle designs, bluetooth technology, 3 assistance systems, JBL® sound system ... and 40 new colour combos!
We can’t make your new car purchase decision for you, but we can show you some of the cars we can’t wait to get our hands on for a test drive. So how about the ...
Ford Raptor
Ford GT
Fiat 500x Trekking
Available in 2016, the Raptor is tougher, smarter, more capable and more efficient than ever. It is powered by an all-new high-output 3.5L EcoBoost engine and utilizes high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy in its body and bed, slashing over 500 lbs. of weight compared to the 2014 Raptor. It has a turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost mid-mounted engine, producing over 600bhp and sending power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle. That’s the brand-new Ford GT, of which Ford will make 250 every single year. The price? “To Be Determined” ...
“Ciao Bella!” The 2016 FIAT 500X Trekking Plus is is the longest model in the 500 family so far and the first Fiat with an (optional) all-wheel drive. In North America, the base engine with front wheel drive is the Fiat 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo (160 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque) with a 6-speed manual transmission. AWD versions have a 2.4-liter four cylinder (180 hp and 175 lb.-ft. of torque).
Tesla Model X Model X combines the space and functionality of a seven seat sport utility vehicle with the uncompromised performance of a Tesla. Equipped with all-wheel drive, powered by two independent, digitally controlled electric motors it will be the Falcon Wing rear doors which fold up and out of the way that will make the X an eye-catcher.
Audi TT
“An icon returns.” Arriving later this summer, the all-new, third-generation Audi TT looks familiar but comes with a sleeker interior including the innovative new Audi virtual cockpit and some new 2.0 liter turbo engines (all the way up to 310 hp). Available as Coupe and Roadster. SUMMER 2015

EXIT STRATEGIES
?
?
by John-Erik Grain
How do you intend to exit your business? Exit Strategies aren’t just for bad dinner parties; they apply to most situations in life, including your business. If you’re not prepared with a comprehensive exit strategy for your business, you will start one after reading this. Let’s prime our discussion with a few simple facts. Out of the nearly 390,000 small businesses in BC (0-50 employees) about 40% of these will either sell or could be forced to close in the next five years! Why? Our aging population. It’s no secret that our baby boomer business builders who have kept the food on the table and put the kids through university are now ready to recast the dream net, buy that motorhome, and head south. The new social conscience culture among our Canadian youth is pulling them in many more directions today requiring a more diversified work life. Hence, fewer businesses are being inherited so more businesses are hitting the open market where the law of demand prevails and buyers are educated investors from around the world. They have strict criteria that must be met to purchase businesses. As a business owner, it would sure make selling more viable if you knew these criteria and could plan your exit around them instead of scrambling to divest after “life” forces you to do it. Implementing a comprehensive exit strategy for you and your business is a compulsory step in the business cycle. This is Business 101. Less than 18% of owners (approximately) have a written exit plan, other than perhaps to sell… at some point. The idea here is you exit on your predetermined terms leaving nothing to chance. Plan your exit, execute the plan, then work with a professional Business Broker to close the deal, exiting gracefully and moving on to your next dream. Let’s jump into your future buyer’s shoes for a minute to get an idea of

what 3 Major Criteria they are looking at. If you just focus on three things, focus on these: 1. Earnings Trending Up What benefits will the buyer receive in exchange for a purchase price and some calculated risk? And are these earnings trending up? This needs to be proven with 3-5 years of audited financials and/or tax returns. You need to show an increased revenue and cost cutting trend year over year. Avoid running “personal expenditures” through the company. 2. Hedged Against Future Risk Market conditions change. A crystal ball would be great; unfortunately we must opt for foresight and informed decision making to hedge against future risk. Perhaps creating employee contracts, early lease renewals, settling lawsuits, securing customer contracts, patenting or trade-marking your intellectual property, or some other tactic will decrease this risk to a buyer making your business more saleable. Start researching and targeting these now. 3. Employee Operated The backbone of your business should be the employees, not the owner. Implement measures to avoid doing the work so you can focus on bolstering earnings. Buyers don’t want to be a slave to their new business. This is a major factor in the buying decision. Set it up for them so they can focus on growth right out of the gates, but are able to take that two vacation and the whole operation still functions like a Swiss watch. Once you have a good handle on these three criteria, assemble an experienced business brokering team that will price your business accurately to maximize your transaction value. Remember, be realistic because only the marketplace determines what your business is worth; not you, your accountant or your best friend. Then expect an exciting

selling process. Don’t gamble away your business and legacy. You must be as prepared as possible to sell your business in today’s competitive economy. Develop an Exit Strategy and start implementing it today.

Luxury Redefined
The eye candy is undeniable at the new August Luxury Motorcars. The double-height glass indoor showroom is stuffed with a Ferrari two-seater convertible front and centre, a Audi R8 convertible here, a Dodge Hellcat there, a couple of Porsches on that side and an AMG Mercedes convertible on this side. Outside on the lot there are neat rows of more Mercedes, Audis and Porsches, along with BMWs, Range Rovers and more exotic, luxury and sports brands. August Luxury Motorcars, located at 884 McCurdy Place, just off Highway 97, is turning the Okanagan car industry on its ear. There are no sales desks in the showroom.. a vehicle’s specs from the control of an iPad. “We’ve also taken the pressure of buying a car away,” said president Matt August. “We give you the best deal right off the bat. We’re also implementing this way of doing business at Kelowna Motors for Mazda” where Matt is general manager. Thus, the dealership’s mantra of ‘redefining experience’, the experience of buying a car, the experience of driving and the experience of having it maintained at the on-site service centre. “No one else in town is doing this,” said August.

“We’re selling amazing mostly pre-owned cars, a small percentage exotic, a larger percentage of luxury cars and a small percentage more affordable with the redefining experience difference.” So go ahead, treat yourself to a $150,000 Ferrari or, if you’re on a budget, that 2010 Mercedes for $20,000.

Beds, Shoes & BRAs
... where women spend all of their time! I was blessed to have an amazing Grandmother whose wisdom has always served me well. Her first piece of advice was to always buy “quality” in beds, shoes and bras because this is where we spend the majority of our time! Think about it; a bad night’s sleep or shoes that hurt your feet or bras that feel like a medieval torture device can have a significant negative impact on your day. This practical piece of common sense was always followed up with... Buy the best quality you can afford and take care of it! The challenge has become finding products whose quality is worthy, consistent and authentic - no slick marketing required to spin the product. Quality will stand the test of time. When Mom and I opened Esteem Lingerie, our goal was to find bras, nightwear and foundation wear in quality and fit we could stand behind. Over the last 9 years we have seen companies come and go. However there has always been one manufacturer that has led the industry in quality, fit, beauty and durability consistently: VandeVelde and their brands Prima Donna and Marie Jo. This year Prima Donna is celebrating its 150th anniversary! (FYI Canada is only 148 years old in comparison!) With early beginnings in corsetry and being a leading innovator as lingerie technology changed, Prima Donna has moved through time with a focus on quality. This little family owned company with its roots in Belgium has encompassed the world with its great fits, supportive beauty and comfort for generations. With a range of product that fits so many women, of any shape or size, Prima Donna has always focused on real women feeling great in their own bodies. Beyond being purveyors of fine lingerie, Prima Donna has been a mentor and model for our little business here in West Kelowna. They have worked with us through the tough times and celebrated with us during the great times. Thanks Gran! Your great wisdom has served us well! Congratulations and thank-you to Prima Donna for helping us do more than lift women’s spirits!

More than just a smile ….
That’s what you get when walking into True Dental. So what makes True Dental different? “Great question,” Dr. Don says as he smiles and laughs, “ Well… It’s all in the details really. From our look, our approach to treatment, our level of attention and care, our vibe, our team, to our music … we’re different. It’s more than just your smile and we know that. Your smile is your brand, your business card, your reflection, your health, your smile is you. Your smile radiates confidence, you need to feel good about it and that starts at an early age.” Dr. Don is often called ‘the child whisperer’ by his team. He definitely has a gift with children, the energy and connection Dr. Don makes is like no other. Kids LOVE Dr. Don and they love coming here! “I have children referred to me from Fort St. John to rural Alberta and everywhere in between. Having hospital privileges at Summerland General has definitely benefited those families that: 1) simply cannot afford to see the pediodontist; and, 2) can’t afford to wait.” Since 1991, Dr. Don has been treating children under general anaesthesia with great success. “It’s definitely an added bonus to offer this level of service and this treatment alternative to Mom and Dad when their child has all four corners of their mouth to treat. The procedure is seamless, the kids come in in their PJ’s, we play on the iPad, they have a nap, and wake up with all their dental treatment completed, feeling better, more comfortable, more confident, and able to eat … that right there is what it’s all about. Children are our passion and that is why we’re different than any other dental office … Happy and healthy kids that are able to smile from the inside out.” Contact Dr. Don’s team True Dental today to discuss you and your family’s dental needs, new patients and families are always welcome 778.755.2577 or visit us online at www.truedental.ca Unit 208-525 HWY 97 South, Kelowna

IGNITE YOUR PASSION! Themed River Cruises by Donna Bennett
Award-winning ships, exotic destinations, an intimate, friendly experience, and ever-changing picture postcard sceneries - awaken your spirit!
I
f you have a passion for wine, art, golf, culinary arts, music, beer or history and politics, a themed river cruise is a great way to meet like-minded people who share your interests. Unique themed cruises offered throughout the year include extra activities and tours, which highlight a specific topic.
River cruisers tend to attract well-travelled, interesting people who appreciate great value, impeccable service and immersive experiences. If that describes you, I know you will love a river cruise! Award winning ships offer an intimate, friendly experience, with ever-changing picture postcard scenery and hundreds of exotic destinations such as Europe, Russia, India, and Asia. There are African Safari and Wildlife Cruises too! Staterooms on river cruise ships are similar to rooms in a fine boutique hotel with amenities like pillow-top mattresses, cozy bathrobes and slippers, marble appointed bathrooms, high tech entertainment, Wi-Fi, and lots of storage. There are a variety of staterooms on each ship suitable for everyone’s budget. Avalon Waterways has revolutionized staterooms, by offer-

ing Panorama Suites where their unique open-air balcony is moved inside. Your bed is turned to face these huge wall-towall, floor-to-ceiling sliding windows so you can sip a glass of wine on your bed, and watch the castles drift by. How romantic! River cruises are all-inclusive holidays and include a selection of specially crafted shore excursions, unforgettable cuisine, unlimited alcohol, entertainment on board, and often gratuities. Travel insurance, flights, transfers, and pre and post- cruise hotel options are also available. Every detail will be arranged for you, so you can have a wonderful stress-free vacation! The distance between ports is quite short, which means you have a lot of time to explore each destination. Innovative excursions are offered with a variety of fitness levels, so you can have a gentle walking tour or hop on a complementary bike to explore Cologne’s Old Town and Cathedral along the enchanting Rhine River. You will have expert certified local guides at your destinations, and VIP access into places of local importance, so you can make the most out of your vacation time.
Chefs carefully prepare cuisine on board using fine locally sourced ingredients, and the culinary experience is second to none. Local performers are brought in from the ports to provide authentic cultural experiences, and you can attend educational talks about your destinations. If all of this sounds amazing to you, that’s because it is! Imagine enjoying your 10 Day Tulip and Windmills Cruise, where the pace is laid-back and leisurely as your spectacular Viking ship gently meanders down the river. The water is so calm, you forget you are actually moving. You breathe in the sweet smell of flowers as your eyes feast on the landscape carpets of bright tulips and fabulous windmills. AMA Waterways offers a 10 day Christmastime Cruise (Beer Themed). You start off with 2 amazing nights in Prague, and then visit multiple Christmas Markets while sailing from Nuremberg to Budapest. On this themed cruise you can also learn about how beer is made, and participate in authentic beer tastings on and off the ship. You will enjoy presentations from distinguished journalist Don Russell who will be your Beer Cruise host. All the river cruise companies offer an enticing selection of wine themed cruises. AMA Waterways has a brand new Taste of Bordeaux (wine themed) cruise for 2016. Additional shore excursions include visits to vineyards, a special wine tasting at a cave in Saint-Emilion and viniculture seminars. Local vintages are brought on board and carefully paired with regional cuisine by your chef. Avalon Waterways offers golf themed cruises from Vienna to Munich where you can attend golf outings and lectures, then hit the greens on select courses as tee times will be arranged for you by a local specialist. There will be castles, historical museums, great beer, and then more golf! Art lovers - the 8 day Paris round trip Art and Impressionist
themed cruise by Avalon is the one for you! Visit famous sites of romantic Paris like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and stroll down the Champs-Elysees. You can visit the charming home of Claude Monet where he lived for 43 years, and see the water gardens and flowers that inspired him to create his paintings. You will also have the opportunity to see a collection of Monet’s Japanese prints. Then, visit Vincent Van Gogh’s quaint little town on a guided excursion to Auvers-sur-Oise. This commune was home to other artists including Paul Cézanne, Charles-François Daubigny, Camille Pissarro and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. You will also get to explore The Musée d’Orsay, which is a must-see for art lovers, as it houses an extraordinary collection of French impressionist and post-impressionist works. Art experts will come on board to lecture about impressionism and you may even be treated to an on-board painting class! Whether you want to try a special themed river cruise or sail down the Romantic Rhine, Enchanting Danube, or experience the Riches of the Mekong, there are many excellent River cruise companies that I would recommend. Avalon, Viking, AMA Waterways, Scenic, Uniworld, Tauck and Abercrombie and Kent all have solid reputations and are highly rated. These cruises book up early, so to get the best value, date, itineraries, and staterooms, plan your vacation 8 – 10 months ahead of time. Awaken your spirit! River cruising is an unparalleled travel experience, and a fantastic way to meet new people. I would love to help you plan the perfect river cruise to ignite your passion! NHL Young Stars Classic Wildly Popular - For A Reason! By DAVID CROMPTON
Dean Clarke views the NHL Young Stars Classic as the “pinnacle” of a growing list of high-profile annual events hosted by Penticton at the impressive South Okanagan Events Centre facility. “Events that work for our community, seeded with our expertise, that have potential to call the building and the city home, that’s our mandate,” said Clarke, regional vice-president for Spectra Venue Management (formerly known as Global Spectrum), that manages the SOEC and Penticton Trade and Convention Centre. The wildly popular Young Stars – which sees the top prospects from the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets play a round-robin tournament in Penticton (this year Sept. 11-14) – is going into its fifth year at the SOEC. Clarke said the host Canucks, the City and Spectra have worked to establish

the SOEC as the permanent home for the Young Stars. The Young Stars Classic, championed by Penticton Mayor and hockey enthusiast Andrew Jakubeit, carries a particularly high profile. Clarke said each team brings an entourage of around 75 players and officials. He conservatively estimates the economic spinoff to be around $2 million a year. “Sustainable, modest growth is what we strive for,” said Clarke. “It’s really a win-win as the event exposes our area to an extremely high level of hockey, while for the Canucks and the NHL, it exposes their brand outside their primary market.” Clarke said the Canucks, as well as the other teams, profess a love for Penticton. “You add in the other tourism amenities, the wine region, the beaches … the

players and the teams all love it. Teams bring a lot of their staff along just as a way to give something back to them.” “The Canucks love the Okanagan and they know we are a professional organization with a great building, two great ice surfaces and quality dressing room facilities,” said Clarke. “We also have a long history of people who love hockey and have enjoyed success in the sport in this city.” Tickets for the tournament will go on sale on July 10 at 10 a.m. Tickets are available online at www.valleyfirsttix.com, by phone at 1-877-7632849, in person at the Valley First Box Office at the SOEC or Wine Country Visitor Centre.

Nikki Harrison Nikki Harrison is a Master Portrait photographer, and has recently moved to the Okanagan from Vancouver where she she ran a successful portrait business. Nikki specializes in a unique style of portraiture that is not seen any where else; that’s what sets her apart.
We asked her if she was concerned with the saturated market for photographers in the area, and she replied, “I am not a wedding photographer, I am a Master Portrait Photographer, specializing in unique portraits of children, women and bridal portraits. We are all talented in our own genre, so I am not worried about infringing on anyone else’s talent, nor theirs mine. There is a high demand for my work outside of the Okanagan, that keeps me busy as well.”
Nikki moved back to the Okanagan with her husband, Brad, because they love the area and the weather, the arts culture and most of all, to be closer to her mother. Website: www.elegantportraits.ca Instagram: nikkiphotographer Phone: 604-754-5591

introducing PEOPLE who MAKE a DIFFERENCE
(Mayor of Kelowna)
BASRAN
What is your present state of mind?
by Rick Maddison
What do you do when you’re not working, to get your mind off of work?
Oh, okay. My present state of mind? Pretty darn good. Really happy with where I’m at family-wise, work-wise. It’s been a good balance. The transition has gone well. So, state of mind is great.
Family would be the number one. My daughter, for example, just started kick and run soccer, she’s four-years-old. My
What has surprised you about the Mayor’s office?
“
Just the sheer volume of communication at every medium possible. Snail mail, e-mail, telephone calls, social media. Because I am more accessible, especially with social media, no offence to previous people who have held the job, but I would say the sheer volume of communication I receive in a single day is probably a big surprise.
What’s the number? You know what? Honestly, I’ve never counted.
What’s your guess? A couple hundred.
What has been the coolest thing about being Mayor so far, other than being interviewed for ICON magazine? Good point. How I always likened it is being captain of a team. And so, having played a lot of sports, being captain of this team is an honour. So, to be the captain of the team where I was born and raised is something I still have a hard time putting into words.
What has been the most challenging? My answer for this hasn’t changed, even as a councillor. The hardest part of my job is knowing that I am going to make decisions that are going to upset people, including people that have supported me in the past or present and knowing that you can’t please everyone. Sometimes you have to say ‘no’ or sometimes you have to make decisions that you know are going to upset people, but you have to just do what you believe is for the community... and that’s the hard part – is knowing you’re going to upset people.
The hardest part of my job is knowing that I am going to make decisions that are going to upset people …
“ two-year-old son loves hockey, so road hockey with him in the driveway. If there is a moment for me, as you know, playing hockey and I’ve also just recently started playing basketball again and formed a new co-ed basketball league. So, playing some co-ed basketball with a great group of people who let me be me. They don’t care that I’m the Mayor; that doesn’t even come into the equation.
I want to confirm a rumour that you attended council meetings for one year before running for council, is that true or false? It’s false, because I don’t think it was an entire year. Let’s say it was about twothirds of a year.
And you did that why?
my own knowledge, when it came time to campaign, that I at least had a leg up on some of those I was going to be running up against. But, also so I would be knowledgeable about the issues that were going to be discussed during the campaign.
What would you say is the top contentious issue facing Kelowna and in the future? Well, there are a couple of issues and I’m trying to think; analytically, we just did a citizen survey and so the top issues in the citizen survey would have been - and I may have to get back to you on this - but traffic was the number one – and housing, no access to housing, clean water. I would say those are the top three, but the one I still believe is right up there with those is proper planning. Because we were the fifth fastestgrowing metropolitan area in Canada in 2014 and I don’t see that changing, so it’s making sure that we grow in a responsible manner, in order to protect the Okanagan lifestyle that we all value and move here for.
Last question is what has been the most outrageous thing that you got to do in the Mayor’s office since taking office? That’s easy. Clearly the wrestling match that I got to be part of in the Kelowna Invasion. So, Kelowna Invasion is a series of wrestling events to raise money for various children’s charities in Kelowna. I got to take part in one of the matches, trash-talk the villain wrestler and may have gotten to throw my weight around a little bit as well, which anyone who clearly knows me knows that I’m not the most physically intimidating person ever. So, I’d have to say that was probably the most outrageous at this point.
Do you get to spin in the chair or anything?
Because I wanted to have a handle on the issues before I ran for council. I just think that’s an important part of the job, is having a grasp of the issues and I don’t think you can make change in your community without knowing what those issues are. So I just wanted for
No, no. That’s probably the most outrageous thing.

Delta has its dream team, and it is really cooking already. A yearlong process to assemble one of Canada’s preeminent culinary trios is now complete at the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort and Conference Centre in Kelowna. Executive Chef Iain Rennie, a 2004 gold-medal winner at the World Culinary Olympics, has hand-selected the two men to help him establish innovative culinary concepts at the hotel. “Delta Grand Okanagan is preparing for a significant renovation of our lobby, and with that comes a brand new destination kitchen and wine bar,” says Daniel Bibby, General Manager of Delta Grand Okanagan. “We are confident that we have hired one of the top chefs in Canada.” The Delta’s Culinary Dream Team (left to right): Arthur Chen, Iain Rennie, James Ng
James Ng is Executive Sous Chef. He arrived in May after three years at Vancouver’s Marriott Pinnacle. Prior to that, Ng spent almost three years at the Vancouver Convention Centre, where he oversaw $22 million in food sales. Arthur Chen is the Executive Pastry Chef, a man as decorated as his delectable desserts. Chen helped Team Canada win silver at the 2013 World Hospitality Championships in Dubai. While continuing to rely on the farm-to-table ethos, Executive Chef Rennie and his team are planning to elevate stunning and delicious dishes for guests.

The Mission Tap House The Tap House is ‘your house’ offering a relaxing atmosphere for you to unwind, unplug, and connect with great friends. As the name would suggest, it wouldn’t be a real Tap House without a great selection of local craft beers on tap – 20 to be exact. Alongside their diverse beer menu, they offer great food selection consisting of dependable and comfortable favorites, like sandwiches, salads and shareables. Come for the beer, stay for the great food – you won’t be disappointed! Black Bear Bar & Grill New this year, Black Bear Bar and Grill offers a unique Kelowna dining experience. Best known for their fresh out of the water seafood and fish plates, they’ve also included some non-seafood items for those who can’t swim. To complement a delightful meal, they continue the local trend carrying Okanagan wines, house-made creative cocktails, and craft beer from BC breweries. Their natural and charming décor combine for a great, casual ambiance where individuals can socialize and enjoy great food that is simple and refined. The Train Station Pub Since 1926, The Train Station has welcomed newcomers to Kelowna and seen friends and families reunited. Nothing’s changed. This is a place where food and drink is the excuse to come and enjoy great community. Reconnect over a glass of Okanagan wine, a local craft beer or classic pub favourites, some with a twist! In the heart of downtown Kelowna, the Yale Town vibe makes it a destination for both tourists and locals alike.

WINGS
Kelowna The WINGS Story: Our Idea of creating an atmosphere of “Fun Dining” rather than “Fine Dining” has proven to be a hit and we know you’ll enjoy the food, the warm inviting atmosphere and the friendly staff – everything you need to ensure your WINGS Kelowna experience is one you’ll want to repeat again and again. When WINGS was founded, we wanted to create a place where individuals and families could go and enjoy the latest sporting event, a casual meal or just each other’s company regardless of age and dining expectations. After careful thought and consideration the WINGS concept was born. In the past you would need to go to a sports bar to enjoy your favourite sporting events. This, of course, excludes children, young adults and families from enjoying the fun. So we created the concept whereby the whole family can spend time together, watching the game in a community atmosphere. The WINGS menu features home-made and fresh items, where the majority of sauces and side dishes are made in-house, and many of the entrees are made from scratch. The “Bobby Wing from the House of Pain”, is a guest favourite. This Wing is so hot it’s served with a waiver to ensure guests know what they’re getting themselves into! 210 Lawrence Avenue, Kelowna Call 250.860.1038 www.greatwings.ca
We created the Fiji Blond Lager with a local microbrewery, working closely with the brewmaster to create the perfect taste profile to complement WINGS signature menu items. Fiji Blond as gone on to garner “Best Beer” awards for some of the WINGS locations in local brewery competitions. All the hard work and attention to detail has certainly paid off. WINGS has been voted “Best Wings” numerous times for our fresh, never frozen multi-award winning wings! WINGS has also been the recipient of the coveted Golden Plate awards multiple times... we’ve placed first five years in a row! It’s your guarantee of top notch, delicious food. the tasting note
EXPLORING THE WINES OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY
“You want the perfect wine for a hot summer day? Look no further, we got you covered!”
THE VIBRANT VINE 2014 WOOPS? It all started with the 2012 Oops, which was awarded “Best Wine in the World” at the 2013 World Wine Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. That alone is quite amazing ... and you would not believe how it happened. But we don’t have enough room here so you will have to visit the winery and ask! It’s quite a story! The 2014 Woops? is a blend of all the white varietals Vibrant Vine produces on their estate: Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc. The result? An explosion of taste including apricot, white peach and citrus is followed by an off-dry palate which is mouth filling and pleasing. A true winner. And a “must” for the summer! Retail: $23.00
Alc./Vol.: 12%
www.thevibrantvine.com
EX NIHILO VINEYARDS sX TOUS v.2014 TOUS~Fr.~ “meaning all and everything, we toast Tous!” Right in time for the summer: Ex Nihilo’s contribution to this Tasting Note is also their first bubbly - a wonderful Prosecco-style Pinot Noir. “Tous” was produced in the delicate process of the Saignée Method. While harvesting the fruit that was destined for this sparkling, the grapes were handled as gently as possible in order to minimize the extraction of coarse phenolic compounds from the skin. Only the free run “bleeding” of their Pinot Noir was used in making this exultant wine. The result is a crisp and refreshing wine, with ripe aromas of strawberries, cherries, white peach, and a hint of honey. Retail: $25
Alc./Vol.: 14%
www.exnihilovineyards.com
THE HATCH BRUT ROSE This is too good to edit: “The hatch ‘brut Rose’ is a very sentimental wine, due to it being estranged from us for some time in a location almost as obscure and isolated as Elba. The octopus is floating in Champagne while throwing wine barrels with Napoleon stranded on his head. The piece could not capture our feelings about this bottle any better… So don’t just waste it on ‘celebrations’, ok? This is a bubble for every day. Did you wake up, go to work and get yourself safely back home? If you answered yes, or no, to that question, this bubble is right for you. It’s dry (brut), it’s bubbly and it’s tasty; what more do you need? Pair this wine with being alive, or bring to a funeral, cause those things can be a big a drag.” Retail: $27.99
Alc./Vol.: 12.7%
www.thehatchwines.com
EX NIHILO VINEYARDS Pinot Noir v.2013 VQA And another award-winning wine! ExNihilo just recently received the prestigious BC Lieutenant Governor’s Award for their 2013 Pinot Noir! Congratulations, it’s well deserved and proof the 2013 growing season, with above average temperatures in July and August - and a sunny, late summer in September - led to optimal ripeness and a higher yield than previous vintages. The result: Lovely ripe cherry aromas that are sprinkled with strawberry, violets and coffee. The stain palate is well balanced with dark spice on the finish. The winemaker’s recommendation: Drink now through 2018! Retail: $32

What We Love About The Okanagan
Insider information is everything! This issue longstanding Okanagan restaurateur Steve Stinson shares what he thinks makes the Okanagan so special.
1
Downtown Kelowna. We have all been working very hard to create a brand identity for downtown Kelowna as a centre for shopping, going out, etc. There are lots of new restaurants, lots of choice now. There are a ton of things to discover in the downtown area that people haven’t checked out yet.
2 3
Okanagan Mountain. I love to hike there with my Golden Retriever ‘Chewy’. He needs lots of exercise, and no one minds if he runs around there. He doesn’t chew things, by the way, he’s named after Chewbacca from Star Wars, because talks just like him and he’s hairy. Paddleboarding on Okanagan Lake in the early morning. It’s great being out on the lake when it is completely calm. I’m still trying to learn to stand up.
4
Big White. I go snowshoeing at Big White. It is one of the most serene places you can be. The sound of the snow shoes on the snow, it’s beautiful. I’m a fair-weather skier these days, but I like the flexibility of the whole mountain, and how some runs suit certain types of days better.
5
Concerts. I love concerts. I go to them everywhere Prospera Place, Kelowna Community Theatre. I love retro bands, and the last one I went to was April Wine, who are still great - I felt really young in the crowd! I’ve seen Bob Dylan, the Moody Blues, Neil Young - the best concert ever. It’s also a great experience to walk around in the summer and listen to the buskers. Festivals Kelowna do a great job of setting acts up.
6
The Fixx Cafe and Pasta Bar. I lreally love The Fixx in the Mission, they do a great job. I always order the same thing - Pasta Puttanesca and a glass of red wine.
7
Exploring The Wine Trail. I love picking an area, like the Golden Mile, or Naramata, and going to 7 or 8 wineries, staying over, having dinner... making a day of it.
13
14
UBCO and Okanagan College. The local colleges and universities have grown so much, which is great to see. There are business programs, culinary programs... this is where we get lots of our staff.
15
The Kelowna Rockets Hockey Team. I’m a huge Rockets’ fan. We’ve sponsored the team for years, and they come in and eat with us a lot. They’re a really good team and it was great they went as far as they did this year. Bai Tong. Right now I’m really into Thai food - I find it lighter, healthier and so flavourful. Bai Tong in downtown Kelowna is one of my favourites.
12
Golf. I’m not a great golfer but it’s just fun, and great to be out in nature. I like to play at the Okanagan Golf Club. My favourite course is The Bear, designed by and named after the great Jack Niclaus. Kelowna Airport. YLW makes it easy to get those short away breaks - shopping in San Francisco, the weekend in Vegas.
Quails’ Gate Winery. My favourite winery is Quail’s Gate. They have great wines, a great location, and a great restaurant.
8 9 10
11
The Local Craft Beer Scene. I’m a big fan of craft brewing. All my restuarants really promote this. I love going into the Mission Tap House and trying whatever’s new on tap that day. I love the process of sampling and trying new things. The area is great for that.
Location, Location, Location. All businesses in the Okanagan are tied into our geographical location and its natural beauty. We have beautiful countryside, wines, great produce. The local food industry is booming, and they are marketing it well. Collectively it’s all these little things put together. We have great infrastructure, and the area is big enough that you can always discover new things.
Steve Stinson has been a restaurateur in Kelowna for 28 years. He is the man behind the Black Bear Bar & Grill, the Mission Tap House and the Train Station Pub in Kelowna, and has been a board member of Tourism Kelowna and the Downtown Kelowna Association.
